Write the structures of all isomers having molecular fromula, C_(7)H_(7)Cl and containing a benzene ring. Which isomeric compounds contain a much weaker C-Cl bond and why?

Answer»

Solution :
In structrues,I , II and III, Cl atoms are attached with benzene ring. HENCE the LONE pairs of electrons of a Cl-atoms are in conjugation with `pi`- ELECTORN clouds of benzene ring. Thus, C-Cl bonds of I,II and III get partially double bond CHARCATER. But, in structure IV, Cl atom is attached with side chain C atom for which its lone pairs of electrons cannot take part in conjugation with `pi`-electron clouds of benzene ring. Hence, C-Cl bond of IV has weaker C-Cl bond.
