Biography of the Ganga

The story of the origin of the Ganga has appeared in the Ramayana. King Sagar of Ayodhya, an ancestor of Lord Ram, performed Ashwamedh Yagya for 99 times. Indra, the chief of gods, became jealous of the successes of Sagar. When Sagar sent the Yagya horse around the world for the hundredth time, Indra abducted it and hid it in the hermitage of Kapila Muni. Sixty thousand princes attacked the Muni’s hermitage thinking that Kapila Muni had caught the horse and confined it challenging the authority of Sagar.

Kapila Muni burnt the princes to ashes out of anger. King Bhagirath of the same clan came to know about the plight of his father and uncles. He went to Kapila and prayed to him to suggest a solution of the problem. Kapila told him that the waters from the Ganga could bring them back to life. Bhagirath left his kingdom to meditate and do penance for salvation of his ancestors. He did penance to Brahma for 1000 years requesting the Ganga to come down to the earth. Brahma granted his wish. He advised Bhagirath to pray to Shiva to sustain the weight of the Ganga’s descent as only he could do so. Shiva held out his matted hair while it descended. The Ganga washed away the ashes of Bhagirath’s ancestors bringing them back to life.

गंगा की जीवनी

गंगा की उत्पत्ति की कथा रामायण में आयी है। अयोध्या के राजा सगर, जो भगवान राम के पूर्वज थे, ने 99 बार अश्वमेध यज्ञ का आयोजन किया था। इन्द्र, जो देवताओं का मुखिया था, सगर की सफलताओं से चिढ़ गया। जब सगर ने यज्ञ के अश्व को दुनिया का चक्कर लगाने हेतु सौवीं बार भेजा तो इन्द्र ने इसका अपहरण कर लिया तथा इसे कपिल मुनि के आश्रम में छिपा दिया। 60 हजार राजकुमारों ने कपिल मुनि के आश्रम पर आक्रमण कर दिया। वे सोचते थे कि अश्व को कपिल मुनि ने ही पकड़ा था तथा इसे कैद किया था तथा इस तरह सगर की सत्ता को चुनौती दी थी। कपिल मुनि ने इन राजकुमारों को क्रोध से भस्म कर दिया। इसी वंश के राजा भगीरथ को उसके पिता तथा चाचाओं की इस दुर्दशा का पता चला।

वह कपिल के पास गए तथा उनसे इस समस्या के समाधान हेतु सलाह देने की प्रार्थना की। कपिल ने उन्हें बताया कि गंगा नदी का जल उन्हें पुनर्जीवित कर सकता है। भगीरथ ने राज्य का त्याग कर दिया और उनके पूर्वजों के उद्धार के लिए तपस्या एवं प्रायश्चित करने चले गए। उन्होंने 1000 वर्ष तक ब्रह्मा की उपासना (प्रायश्चित) की तथा गंगा से पृथ्वी पर आने की प्रार्थना की। ब्रह्मा ने उनकी कामना को स्वीकार कर लिया। उन्होंने भगीरथ को शिव की भक्ति करने को कहा क्योंकि शिव ही गंगा के नीचे उतरने के बोझ को संभाल सकते थे। शिव ने अपने उलझे हुए बालों को फैला दिया और गंगा नीचे आने लगी गंगा ने भगीरथ के पूर्वजों। की राख को धो दिया और उन्हें पुन:जीवित कर दिया।
