एक बार महारानी विक्टोरिया के पति राजकुमार एलबर्ट ने अपने महल, विंडसर कैसल में कैण्डीज, फल और छोटे तोहफों से एक बहुत बड़े क्रिसमस ट्री को सजाया था तब से यह परंपरा चल पड़ी।

क्रिसमस के अवसर पर गिरजाघर में गाये जाने वाले गीतों को कैरल्स कहते हैं।

In the whole world, India is the only country, where the festivals are celebrated all over the year. The religious festivals have a great importance for Indians. There are some festivals like Makar Sankranthi, Baisaakhi, Ugadi, Vishu, Onam, Christmas, Ramzan etc. The introduction of few festivals has been given in this lesson.

Makar Sankranthi – It is celebrated in month of January throughout India, specially in south India. It is also known as harvesting festival of crops. This festival is celebrated signifying happiness and prosperity. For many centuries it is believed that on this day the Uttarayanas auspicious time begins. Sun enters “Makar” zodioc. There is a belief that a person who dies on this day is free from rebirth cycle. Bheesha Pitamaha of Mahabharata in the battlefield on Kurukshetra was injured very badly and waiting for same day. No sooner the sun entered into Makar Zodiac, he took his last breath and died.

Baisakhi: this festival is celebrated in Punjab. The people of Punjab consider this day as a new year day. This festival is also considered as new crop festival. On the occasion, agricultural land appears green and Rabi crop is ready to harvest. Due to this village farmers are happy and enthusiastic, therefore is celebrated as festival. On this day, they do Bhangra and giddha dance. They wear Traditional dresses. They eat rotimade up of fresh wheat flour, pure ghee, along with jageery. They make festival fire and dance in group.

Visbu:- In Kerala beginning of new year is celebrated as Vishu. Seeing ritual of auspicious scene at first of this new year is considered as very important. Akshath, new clothes, betle leaves. areca nuts, mirror flowers, coins etc are considered as symbols of prosperity and they are kept in bronze utensil which is known as kani. The eldest lady of family arranges all this. The people of kerala have belief that whoever looks at this for first then their year will be auspicious.

Christmas:- Christmas is celebrated all over world by christian community Christians participate mass worship in church. The songs sing on these occasions are known as christmas carols. Even in cold winter, christmas tree is well decorated. Once husband of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert decorated a large Christmas tree with candles (windsor castle), Frits and small gifts. Since then this tradition is going on.

Ramzan:- Ramzan is sacred festival of Muslims. Muslims fast for 30 days named Roja. Roja means to eat before and after sunset Muslims donot eat during day time. By this way fasting for 30 Jays Ramzan is celebrated with great honour. All muslims go to mosque for prayer and distribute sweets and embrace with each other. This festival signifies brotherhood and fraternity
These all festivals are celebrated in India with great ecstasy and happiness. All these festivals can be called our cultural heritage.

1. ‘रक्षाबंधन’ त्योहार सावन की पूर्णिमा के शुभ समाचार अवसर पर मनाया जाता है ।

2. ‘रक्षाबंधन’ त्योहार के लिए साल भर सारी बहनें प्रतीक्षा करती रहती है ।

रमजान मुसलमानों का पवित्र त्योहार है। इस अवसर पर मुसलमान तीस दिन का ‘रोजा’ रखते हैं। ‘रोजा’ का मतलब है कि सूर्योदय के पहले और सूर्यास्त के बाद ही खाना खाया जाता है। यही रोजा रखने का तरीका है। ___ 30 दिनों के बाद रमजान त्योहार बड़ी धूमधाम से मनाया जाता है।
