Question : Neena is having blood group A-ve while her husband’s blood group is O +ve. Their first child is having blood gp. A +ve. Her second child was born with severe anemia and jaundice. What could be the reason ? How this situation could have been avoided ? |
|
Answer» Solution :During her first PREGNANCY after exposure with blood of her first Rh +ve child, her body prepared ANTIBODIES against Rh antigen in her blood. In second pregnancy these Rh antibodies from mother leaked into the blood of foetus (Rh +ve) and destroyed foetus RBCs. It could cause of severe anemia and Jaundice could be FETAL to the foetus. This situation could have been AVOIDED if she had got herself administered anti, Rh antibodies IMMEDIATELY after first delivery to kill Rh antibodies entered in mother’s blood from foetus. |

Question : Natural selection is directing evolution in the beetle population. Explain in detail. |
Answer» Solution :A group of red beetles LIVE in some bushes with green leaves. Their population will grow by sexual reproduction. Crows are natural predator for beetles. Colour variation arises during reproduction. ONE BEETLE with green colour is formed in the population of red beetles. This beetle passes the changed colour on to its progeny, making progeny beetles green. Crows cannot see green COLOURED beetles on the leaves of the bushes. Thus progeny of green beetles is not eaten, while the progeny of red beetles continues to fall prey. As a result, more green beetles survive than red ones in the beetle population. A rare variation became common characteristic in the population. Because it gave a survival advantage. i.e., it was naturally selected. The natural selection is EXERTED by the crows. The more crows there are, the more red beetles would be eaten and the more the proportion of green beetles would be in the population. Thus, natural selection is directing evolution in the beetle population. It results in adaptations in the beetle population to fit their environment better. |

Question : Natural selection is a driving force for evolution-How ? |
|
Answer» SOLUTION :DARWIN published his observation under the name ..origin of species... It elaborates on the theory of natural selectron for evolutionary transformation. The principles of Darwinism tells that NATURE selectrion is a driving force for evolution. 1. Overproduction : Living beings have the ability to reproduce and have the capacity to multiply in a goemetrical manner. 2. Struggle for existence : Due to overproduction a geometric ratio of increase in population occurs . The space to live and food available for organisms remain the same. This creastes a competition among the organisms, for food and space, leading to struggle. (a) The competition may be among the individuals of the same species (Intraspecific struggle) (b) Competition between the organisms of different species living together (Interspecific struggle). (c ) Natural conditions like extreme heat or cold droght and floods can affect the existence of organisms (Environmental struggle). 3. Variations : Small variations are important for evolution. According to Darwin, Favourable variations are useful to the organisms and unfavourable variations are harmful or useless to the organisms. 4. Survival of the fittest or Natural selection : During the struggle for existence, the organisms which can overcome the challenging situation, survive and adapt to the SURROUNDING environment. Organisms, which are unable to face the challenges, are unfit to survive and disappear. The process of selection of organisms with favourable variation is called as Natural selection. 5. Origin of species : According to Darwin, new species originates by the gradual accumulation of favourable variations for number of generations. |
