Question : Sketch and label T.S of Spinal cord. |
|
Answer» Solution :(1) The spinal CORD is covered EXTERNALLY by three meninges viz. Dura mater, ARACHNOID membrane and pia mater. (2) Dorsoventrally there are two fissures, the shallow dorsal or posterior fissure and the deeper ventral or anterior fissure. (3) From dorsal fissure a dorsal septum extends inside. (4) Neurocoel or central canal is situated in the centre of spinal cord. (5) The central canal is filled with cerebrospinal fluid and is lined by cuboidal epithelial cells called layer of ependyma. (6) There is inner grey and outer white matter in the spinal cord. This grey matter is in the shape of 'H' with two dorsolateral horns and two ventrolateral horns. (7) Dorsal horns form dorsal roots and ventral horns form ventral roots. (8) White matter is divided into three columns, viz., the dorsal funiculi, ventral funiculi and lateral funiculi on either SIDE. (9) Ascending and descending tracts of nerve fibres ARISE from dorsal and ventral roots of the spinal cord. Ascending tracts are sensory while descending tracts are motor in nature. |

Question :With the help of neat labelled diagram explain Stanley Miller's experiment in support. |
|
Answer» Solution :Urey-Miller Experiment Harold Urey & Stanley Miller conducted an experiment to prove theory of CHEMICAL evolution. They created a condition SIMILAR to that of primitive earth (i.e. high temperature, volcanic STORMS, reducing atmosphere devoid of oxygen but containing compounds of carbon, hydrogen, NITROGEN and water. They made electric discharge in a closedflask containing `CH_4, NH_3, H_2` and water VAPOUR at `800^@ C`. As a result, some amino acids were formed. In similar experiments, others observed formation of sugars, nitrogen bases, pigments and fats.

Question : Sketch and label internal view of heart. |
Answer» Solution : The heart shows four chambers with two atria and two ventricles. I. Atria : I. Right atrium : (1) Interatrial septum separatestwo atria which are thin walled receiving chambers on the UPPER side. (2) The right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from upper part of body through superior vena CAVA and from the lower part of the body by inferior vena cava. In the right atrium opens the coronary sinus which brings blood from the heart muscles. (3) Eustachian valve guards the opening of inferior vena cava while opening of coronary sinus is guarded by Theebesian valve. (4) On the right of interatrial septum is seen an oval depression called the fossa ovalis. 2. Left atrium : The oxygenated blood from the lungs is brought into left atrium through four openings of PULMONARY veins. II. Ventricles : (1) Two thick walled ventricles are separated from each other by interventricular septum. They are distributing chambers. (2) The inner surface of the ventricle is thrown into a series of folds called columnae carnae or trabeculae carnae. (3) Each atrium opens into the ventricle of its side through atrioventricular aperture. The right atrioventricular is guarded bytricuspid vlve. While the left atrioventricular valve by biscuspid valve or mitral valve. (4)Bicuspid and tricuspid valves are attached to PAPILLARY muscles of ventricles by chordae tendinae. The chordae tendinae prevent the valves from turning back into the atria during the contraction of ventricles. (5) From the right ventriclearises pulmonary trunk which carries deoxygenated blood to lungs for oxygenation. From the left ventricle arise systemic aorta which distributes oxygenated blood to all parts of the body. (6) Pulmonary aorta and systemic aorta have threesemilunarvalves at the base which prevent backward flow of blood during ventricular diastole. |

Question : Sita is a owner of confectionary. She got an order from one of her customers to prepare 150 loaves of bread for a birthday party. On her making process of bread, though there is a time constrain, she prepared the dough and kept it aside undisturbed for few hours. Later she made the required number of breads and delivered to customer on time. A day after the party, customer appreciated Sita for the soft and good quality of bread that she supplied to party. (a) Why Sita kept aside the dough undisturbed? (b) Name the living organism involved in the process. (c) What are the products of the process? (d) How this process enhances the quality of food? |
|
Answer» Solution :(a) SITA kept the dough undisturbed for the fermentation process to occur. (b) Yeast, SACCHAROMYCES erevisiae (fungus). (c) Ethyl alcohol, carbon-dioxide are the PRODUCTS of fermentation of glucose in dough. (d) During fermentation, glucose is broken down into ethanol and `CO_2` which is responsible for LEAVENING of dough. When leavened dough is baked, both the ethanol and `CO_2` gets evaporated making the bread porous and soft. |
