Question :What are assisted reproductive technologies (ART) ? Give its importance and which methods come under it? |
Answer» Solution : Certain special techniques commonly known as Assisted Reproductive Technologies. (ART) through that couple can have children. (i) IVF - In Vitro Fertilization : (IVF) Fertilization outside the body followed by embryo transfer (ET) is one of such methods. In this method is popularly known as test tube baby programme. In this, ova from the wife / donor (female) and sperms from the husband / donor (male) are collected and are induced to form zygote under simulated conditions in the laboratory The zygote or early embryos (with upto 8 blastomeres) could then be transferred into the fallopian tube. This is also called ZIFT - Zygote Intra Fallopian Transfer Embryos with more than 8 blastomeres is tranferred into the uterus (IUT - Intra Uterine Transfer) to complete its further development. Embryos formed by in-vivo fertilization (FUSION of gametes within the female) also could be used for such transfer to assist those females who cannot conceive. (ii) GIFT : Transfer of an ovum collected from a donor into the fallopian tube (GIFT. Gamet Intra Fallopian Transfer) of another female who cannot produce one but can provide suitable environment for fertilization and further development is another method attempted. In this method, ovum is TAKEN from donor and transferred into fallopian tube of a female. (iii) Al : Another specialized procedure to form an embryo in the laboratory is called intra cytoplasmic sperm injection in which a sperm is directly injected into the ovum. Infertility CASES either due to inability of the male partner to inseminate the female or due to very low sperm counts in the ejaculates could be corrected by artificial Insemination. In this technique the semen is collected either from the husband or a healthy donor is artificially introduced either into the vagina or into the uterus (IUI. Intra uterine insemination) of the female. All these techniques require extremely high precision handing by specialized professionals. Legal adoption is one of the best methods for couples looking for parenthood. |

Question : What are adaptations ? Discess any four adaptations found in plants and animals. |
Answer» Solution :Any attribute of the organism (morphological ,physiological or behavioral) that enables the organism to survive and reproduce in its habitat is called adaptation. Many adaptations have evolved over a long evolutionary time and are genetically controlled its survival. Some of the examples of adaptations are given below: (a) In the absence of external water, the kangraoo rat in North Amercian desserts is capable of MEETING all its water requirements through its internal fat oxidation ,in which water is a by product. Also it can concentrate its urine to minimal volume . (b) Mammals living in colder climates have shortes ears and limbs to minimize of heatloss .This is called Allen 's Rule . heat. (c) Aquatic mammals like seals living in polar seas have a thick layer of fat (Blubber ) below their skin that ACTS as an insulator and reduces loss of body heat.(d) Fishes thriving in Antartic waters where the temperature us below zero degrees ,have an array of biochemical adaptations to such extreme environments. (e) Dessert plants POSSES the following adaptations:1 Thick cuticule on their leaf surface. 2 Posses sunken stomata. 3 They have a special photosynthesis pathway i.e ., CAM pathway that enables their stonata to remain closed during day time . 4 In opuntita, the leaves are reudced to spines and the photosynthetic function are taken over by the flatted stems, (f) Archaebacteria have adapations to survive at temperatures more than 100@C. (g) When human beings go from plants to high altitudes (>350m) [e.g : Rohtang pass] they experience altitude sickness, due to the LOW atmoshpheric pressure and reduced oxygen availability. They develop symptoms like fatigue, nausea and heart palpitations . But graudually the body gets adjusted by increasing red BLOOD cell production, decrasing bind capacity of haemoglobin and increasing the breathing rate. |

Question : We sometimes find the existence of following structures in human beings : (i)occurrence of short tail in some babies (ii)presence of additional mammae in two rows down the front of the body of some persons (iii)power of moving pinna, (iv)presence of very long and dense hair on the body Why does this happen in such persons? Also , name the phenomenon involved |
Answer» Solution :The appearance of above characters in some PERSONS can be eplained on the assumption that there is a tendency among the ANIMALS INCLUDING human beings to develop structures that were present in their remote ancestors . The phenomenon involved in called atavism (i.e., the reappearance of CERTAIN ANCESTRAL, not parental, structure(s) which has/have either completely disappeared or greatly reduced ) |

Question : We heard of the slogans ''we two have two'' and ''one family one tree''. Give the importance of these slogans according to your views. |
Answer» Solution :.We two have two.. In 1947, at the time of partition, the population of India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka was 53 crore. At present, the population of India alone is 105 crore. If the present growth continues, in the very near future man will face the scarcity for food, housing, DRINKING water and other BASIC necessities. So we must follow the GOVERNMENT policy .we two have two.. China has passed a strict law that there will be one child from one couple. Anybody having second child pays tax to the government for 18 years. Is it not possible that this law is to be passed in India also? One family one tree The TARGET for 2007 is atleast 100 million trees. The ultimate aim is to create awareness and DEVELOP public knowledge and involvement. So 100 million trees are planted every year. |

Question : We are told that evolution is a continuing phenomenon for all living things. Are humans also evolving? Justify your answer. |
Answer» Solution :Yes, human is also evolving. Fossils GIVE the evidences that evolution is a continuous phenomenon. Our ancestors like Ramapithecus, Australopithecus, Homo HABILIS, Homo erectus, Neanderthal man and Cro-magnon man continuously evolving and modem man (Homo sapiens sapiens) arises from certain modifications. About 15mya Dryopithecus and Ramapithecus were existing. They were hairy and walked like gorillas and chimpanzees. Ramapithecus was more man-like while Dryopithecus was more ape like. 2mya Australopithecines probably lived East African grasslands, they ate fruits. They have ape like characters like-small stature, large incisors, supraorbital ridges and chinless. They have man like characters like-erctposture, bipedal, lumbar curve etc. Homo habilis is the first human -like being the Hominid. The brain capacity of him were between 650- 800cc. They probably did not eat meat. They showed Bipedal, erect POSTURE. They are first tool maker(Handy man). Fossils discoveredin Java in 1891 revealed next stage Le Homo erectus about 1.5mya. They had large brain and 900 cc. They probably ate meat. They first used fire. They were chinless. Neanderthal man is with brain capacity 1400cc. They lived near east and central Asia between 1,00,000-40,000 years back. They used hides to protect. their body and buried their dead. They were cave dwellers. Homo sapiens arose 75,000-10,000 years ago during ice age. Pe-historic cave art developed about 18,000 years ago. They have flat forhead, chin is present,no supra-orbital ridge erect posture. So we can say that evolution is continuing phenomenon EVEN in man. |
