Question : Thermal pollution is harmful for aquatic animals. |
| Answer» SOLUTION :Warm WATER holds less dissolved oxygen than COLD water. The fishes and other organisms are killed because of abrupt change in temperalule. It is called as THERMAL shock. It also increases metabulic rate due to increased enzymatic rate. Increased temperature can cause anaerobic CONDITIONS in deep waters which increases bacterial population. | |

Question : There was an article published in a -newspaper on DNA fingerprinting revealing procedure and its applications. Following terms were mentioned in this article : (i) Minisatellite (ii) Microsatellite Briefly mention about these terms. |
| Answer» Solution :(i) Minisatellites have sequences of approximately 15 to 50 base PAIRS and repeated tandemly upto thousands of times. There are about 30,000 minisatellites loci in the human genome. (ii) Microsatellites have base pairs of less than 10 and repeated usually 10 to 100 times. In himan genome, there are about 2,00,000 such satellite loci. These simple tandem REPEATS of short sequences are called VNTRS (variable NUMBER Tandem repeats). | |

Question : There is shift in the policy of animal collection in the zoo from unlimited animals and limited facilities' to 'limited animals and adequate facilities'. Give reason. |
| Answer» Solution :Zoos were considered as picnic spots in the PAST. Now, they are managed as conservation and education centres where captive breeding of RARE and endangered animals is undertaken and more and more information on wildlife conservation and management is GENERATED through scientific research. ACCORDINGLY, there is a shift in the policy of animal collection in the ZOO from .unlimited animals and limited facilities. to .limited animals and adequate facilities.. | |

Question : There is only one possible sequence of amino acids when deduced from a given nucleotides. But multiple nucleotides sequence can be deduced from a single amino acid sequence. Explain this phenomena. |
|
Answer» Solution :Some amino acids are CODED by more than one codon (KNOWN as degeneracy of codons), hence on deducing a nucleotide sequence from an amino acid sequence, multiple nucleotide sequence will be obtained. For EXAMPLE, lie has three codons : AUU, AUC AUA hence a depeptide. Met-lle can have the following nucleotide sequence: (i) AUG-AUU (ii) AUG-AUC (iii) AUG-AUA - And if, we deduce amino acid sequence the above nucleotide sequences, all the three will code for Met-lle |

Question : There is only one possible sequence of amino acids when deduced from a given nucleotides. But multiple nucleotide sequences can be deduced from a single amino acid sequence. Explain this phenomenon. |
|
Answer» Solution : Some AMINO acids are CODED by more than one codon (known as degeneracy of codons), hence on deducing a NUCLEOTIDE sequence from an amino acid sequence, multiple nucleotide sequence will be obtained. For e.g., Ile has three codons: AUU, AUC AUA hence a DIPEPTIDE Met-Ile can have the following nucleotide sequence : (i) AUG - AUU (ii) AUG - AUC (III) AUG - AUA If we deduce amino acid sequence for the above nucleotide sequences, all the three will code forMet-Iie |

Question : There is greater biodiversity in tropical /subtropical regions than in temperate region. Explain. |
|
Answer» Solution :Speciation is generally a function of TIME, UNLIKE temperate regions subjected to frequent glaciations in the past, tropical latitudes have remained relatively undisturbed for millions of years and thus, had a long EVOLUTIONARY time for species diversification. Tropical environments, unlike temperate ONES are less seasonal, relatively more constant and predictable. Such constant environments PROMOTE niche specialisation and lead to a greater species diversity. There is more solar energy available in the tropics, which contributes to higher productivity, this in turn might contribute indirectly to greater diversity. |

Question : There is a sharp decline in dissolved oxygen downstream from the point of sewage discharge. Why? What are its adverse effects ? |
| Answer» Solution :FOLLOWING discharge of sewage into river, microorganisms involved in biodegradation of organic matter PRESENT in sewage consume more oxygen. This CAUSE mortality of fish and other AQUATIC creatures. | |
| 4119. |
Question : There is greater biodiversity in the tropical regions of the world. |
|
Answer» Solution :The REASONS for GREATER biodiversity in the tropical regions of the world is because UNLIKE temperate regions which have been subjected to frequent glaciation in the park, tropical latitudes have remained relatively undistributed for millions of years and THUS had long evolutionary time for species diversification. Tropical environments, unlike temperate ones are less SEASONAL, relatively more constant and predictable such constant environment promote niche specialization and lead to a greater species diversity. There is more solar energy available in the tropical region, which induces higher productivity and thus greater diversity. |

Question : 'There is a paternity dispute for a child'. Which technique can solve the problem. Discuss the principle involved. |
|
Answer» Solution :DNA finger printing is used to solve the paternity dispute. DNA fingerprinting involves identifying differences in some specific REGIONS sequence called as repetitive DNA, because in these sequences, a small stretch of DNA is repeated many times. These repetitive DNA are separated from bulk genomic DNA as different peaks during density gradient centrifugation. The bulk DNA forms a major peak and the other small peaks are referred to as satellite DNA. Depending on base composition (A : T rich or G :C rich), length of segment, and number of repetitive units, the satellite DNA is classified into many categories, such as MICRO- satellites, mini-satellites etc. These sequences normally do not code for any proteins, but they form a large portion of human genome. These sequence show high degree of polymorphism and form the basis of DNA fingerprinting. Since DNA from every tissue (such as blood, hair- follicle, skin, bone, saliva, sperm etc.), from an individual show the same degree of polymorphism, they become very useful identification tool in forensic applications. Further, as the polymorphisms are inheritable from parents to children, DNA fingerprinting is the basis of paternity testing, in case of disputes. The technique of DNA fingerprinting was initially developed by Alec Jeffreys. Lalji Singh is called father of Indian DNA fingerprinting or DNA profiling or DNA typing. He used a satellite DNA as probe that shows very high degree of polymorphism. It was called as Variable Number of Tandem Repeats (VNTR). The technique, as used earlier, involved Southern BLOT hybridisation using radiolabelled VNTR as a probe. It included (i) Isolation of DNA, (ii) Digestion of DNA by 8 restriction endonucleases, (iii) Separation of DNA fragments by ELECTROPHORESIS, (iv) Transferring (blotting) of separated DNA fragments to synthetic membranes, such as nitrocellulose or nylon, (v) Hybridisation using labelled VNTR probe, and (vi) Detectionof hybridised DNA fragments by autoradiography. |
