Read the following passage carefully. A ChorusOver the surging tides and the mountain kingdoms, Over the pastoral valleys and the meadows, Over the cities with their factory darkness, Over the lands where peace is still a power, Over all these and all this planet carries A power broods, invisible monarch, a stranger To some, but by many trusted. Man’s a believer until corrupted. This huge trusted power Is spirit. He moves in the muscle of the world, In continual creation. He burns the tides, he shines From the matchless skies. He is the day’s surrender. Recognize him in the eye of the angry tiger, In the sign of a child stepping at last into sleep, In whatever touches, graces and confesses, In hopes fulfilled or forgotten, in promises Kept, in the resignation of old men This spirit, this power, this holder together of space Is about, is aware, is working in your breathing. But most he is the need that shows in hunger And in the tears shed in the lonely fastness. And in sorrow after anger.—By Elizabeth JenningsI. Read the following passage carefully.1. What would we do without humor? How would we enjoy talks with others if we did not use humor to invite a smile or a laugh? And how would we manage the times when we feel sad and alone? 2. With humor we lighten up each day, and we find common ground with others. We build healthy relationships with others by knowing what to say and to do that helps, and what hinders, a conversation. Humor often takes us to the edge of uncertainty when we exaggerate, or tease others to make our point. When humor is successful, we build trust and cooperation. We discover that we are not alone, we learn to accept our mistakes, and we look for the good in others and in our selves. Most importantly, we create common ground. However, when we lose our sense of humor, we often get critical or defensive, and, we often get critical of ourselves for what was said, and how it was said. . 3. Humor is an essential skill needed to communicate well with others. A few well chosen words get the attention of others and make a serious point without their getting defensive. Whether we prefer to be the centre of attention or shy and quiet, humor can be adjusted to suit our personality. 4. The challenge for everyone is to become more aware of how to add humor, and when to avoid it. Too much humor, like too much spice often annoys others. Humor that is perceived as insensitive often leads others to shut down, or become argumentative. But when we each maintain our sense of humor, we look for the good in others and in ourselves. To ensure that our humor is welcomed by others, we need to combine our humor with speaking clearly and listening effectively. 5. Have you ever noticed that successful individuals often use self-deprecating humor to humble themselves, without putting themselves down? These individuals understand that every person has strengths and weaknesses and that selfdeprecating humor invites others to feel more confident and equal. Having humor helps us keep our perspective, stay responsive to others, and resolve differences. Do you already have some things that you say to diffuse tension? Words like “At times like this, my uncle used to say…” can help the conversation to become less confrontational. 6. If you can’t think of a humorous comment that will be helpful, you can try looking for clarification by mirroring back their words and clarifying their point. Assume that there is always something that you can find to appreciate when you are looking for common ground. Focus on preventing an argument. Remember, humor is often not the best choice to handle conflict. 7. Opportunities to add a touch of humor happen all of the time. In December when I visited my friend Tim in the hospital, I came wearing antlers from the Dollar Store. And when I was accepted into the graduate program at University of Waterloo, I wrote my acceptance letter as a poem. In each situation my small change from the everyday stirred others to smile, and expect positive conversations in the future. 8. Much of our humor comes from reconnecting to our playful inner child. For many of us, it only takes a playful voice tone, wearing a funny hat, or holding a stuffed toy to get started. Take a risk. Add a bit more humor, and do it in the way that is right for you. (By Leslie Rose Seminars)I. Answer the following questions as briefly as possible.(a) What is the challenge for everyone regarding humor? (b) How can one ensure that humor is welcomed by others? (a) Why do we not encounter diffraction effects of light in everyday observations? (b) In the observed diffraction pattern due to a single slit, how will the width of central maximum be affected if (i) the width of the slit is doubled; (ii) the wavelength of the light used is increased? Justify your answer in each case. |
Answer» (a) We do not encounter diffraction effects of light in everyday observations. To observe diffraction, size of obstacle/aperture must be comparable with wavelength of light but in daily observations size of obstacle/aperture is much larger than the wavelength of light. Angular width of central fringe βθ = 2λ/a (b) (i) If the width of slit is doubled, the (angular) width of central fringe(∝(1/a)) is halved. (ii) When wavelength of light used is increased (βθ ∝ λ), the width of central fringes increases |

Read the passage given below : It's Beginning to Bite In these trying times, when buying ordinary foodstuff can burn a hole in our pockets, comes the news that can actually help us save some hard cash when we go to shop the next time. According to Stanford University study, a first of its kind in the world, there is no evidence to suggest that there are more nutritional benefits from expensive organic food than those grown by conventional methods. The researchers add that there is no difference in protein and fat content between organic and conventional milk and the vitamin count is similar in both types. The only benefit is that organic foods are not contaminated with pesticides but then, before you chew on that plate of organic okra with roti made from organic wheat, they are not 100% pesticide free either. In India, organic food has been growing at 20-22% and the export market is valued at Rs.1,000 crore. Obviously, the study is not good news for that sector and for people who are big on organic food. In India, eating organic food is more of a style statement than due to health worries because the stuff is expensive. But people who can, do indulge in not only organic vegetables but even organic eggs laid by 'happy hens', who are allowed to roam around freely whereas 'unhappy hens' are kept in coops. Then there are companies that have installed music channels in their cowsheds and the milk from those sheds is sold at a marked-up price since it has more nutritional value because the animals are happy thanks to listening 24 x 7 music. We don't know yet of any farmer using music to improve his crop quality, but then you never know that plants are known to respond to music. Why such pickiness about food ? These days, a huge number of TV shows and articles that we see and read on food provide bread and butter for the specialists. But instead of decoding food, its sources and what has gone into growing it, isn't it much better to enjoy what's on the plate?On the basis of your reading of the above passage answer the following questions briefly: (a) According to Stanford University study, organic food in relation to conventional food is ........ . (b) The study will not be welcomed by .............. (c) We can save some hard cash by ................ (d) Music channels are installed in the cowsheds because the ................ Solve the following pair of linear equations by substitution method :3x + 2y - 7 = 04x + y - 6 = 0 |
Answer» 3x + 2y - 7 = 0 .......(i) 4x + y - 6 = 0 ..........(ii) From eqn (ii) 4x + y - 6 = 0 y = 6 - 4x Value of y put in eqn. (i) 3x + 2y - 7= 0 3x + 2(6- 4x) - 7 = 0 3x + 12 - 8x - 7 = 0 5 - 5x = 0 5x = 5 x = 1 Substitute the value of x in eq (ii) to get value of y, 4x + y - 6 = 0 4(1) + y - 6 = 0 4 + y - 6 = 0 y - 2 = 0 y = 2 Hence, values of x and y are 1 and 2 respectively. |

If x + y + z = 1, xy + yz + zx = – 1 and xyz = -1, then find the value of x3 + y3 + z3 |
Answer» We know that x3 + y3 + z3 – 3 xyz = (x + y + z) (x2 + y2 + z2 – xy – yz – zx) => x3 + y3 + z3 – 3xyz => (x + y + z) (x2 + y2 + z2 + 2xy + 2yz + 2zx – 3xy – 3yz – 3zx) (Subtracting and adding 2xy + 2yz + 2zx) => x3 + y3 + z3 – 3xyz = (x + y + z) {(x + y + z)2 – 3(xy + yz + zx)} => x3 + y3 + z3 – 3 x (-1) = 1 x {(1) 2 – 3 x (-1)} [Putting x + y + z = 1; xy + yz + zx = -1; xyz = -1] => x3 + y3 + z3 + 3 = 4 => x3 + y3 + z3 = 4 – 3 x3 + y3 + z3 = 1 |
