"Three factors are crucial in deciding the outcome of politics of social divisions." Elaborate upon the statement.

Answer»

(a) First of all, the outcome depends on how people perceive their identities. If people see their identities in singular and exclusive terms, it becomes very difficult to accommodate.

(b) Second, it depends on how political leaders raise the demands of any community. It is easier to accommodate demands that are within the constitutional framework and are not at the cost of another community.

(c) Third, it depends on how the government reacts to demands of different groups. If the rulers are willing to share power and accommodate the reasonable demands of minority community, social divisions become less threatening for the country.

6555.

What are overlapping and cross-cutting social differences? or Explain the cross-cutting differences with suitable examples. or Compare overlapping and cross-cutting of social differences with one example each. or How do overlapping and cross-cutting of differences create social divisions? Explain. or Make differences between overlapping and cross cutting differences.

Answer»

Social divisions of one kind or the other exist in most parts of the world. A social difference means the difference in a group of people due to their race, religion, language or culture.

Overlapping Differences:

(i) Under this, one social difference overlaps with another.

(ii) Under this, people start feeling that they belong to different communities.

(iii) Overlapping social differences create possibilities of deep social divisions and tensions.

In our country, Dalits tend to be poor and landless. They often face discrimination and injustice. Situations of this kind produce social division.

Cross Cutting Differences :

(i) Under this, a social difference cross cuts another difference.

(ii) Under this, the group can share a common interest on one issue but are likely to be on different sides on different issues.

(iii) These are easier to accommodate.

For example, people in the Netherlands are predominantly Christian, but divided between Catholics and Protestants. Here class and religion cross-cut each other. Catholics and Protestants are about equally likely to be poor or rich and they do not have conflict between them.

6556.

What is meant by overlapping of social differences? Explain with the help of examples.

Answer»

If social differences overlap each other it may lead to social division and if one social difference is given preference then people would begin to think that they belong to different community. It always leads to social division and disintegration of the country.

Example: USA: The blacks are discriminated by the whites due to their poverty.

In our country, Dalits tend to be poor and landless as they often free injustice and discrimination.

How is the issue of sustainability important for development? Explain with examples.

Answer»

Importance of Sustainable Development –

(i) Sustainable development aims at fulfilling the needs of today without compromising the needs of the future generation.

(ii) Sustainability is the capability to use the resources judiciously and maintain the ecological balance.

(iii) It lays emphasis on environmental protection and check environmental degradation.

(iv) To stop over exploitation and over use of resources.

Any three points to be explained with relevant examples like petroleum, coal, ground water, etc.

Detailed Answer on Importance of Sustainable Development :

Sustainable development means that a development should meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs –

(i) It is felt that the economic growth and industrialization have led to reckless exploitation of natural resources. Sustainability promotes a rational use of natural resources.

(ii) Groundwater is an example of renewable resource. But if we use more than what is replenished by nature, then we would be overusing this resource.

(iii) Once the non-renewable resources would be exhausted we won’t be able to use them in future. So, using the resources judiciously will help in maintaining the sustainability of development of our ecosystem.

The issue of sustainability is important for development because development must be in tandem with the future. If natural resources are not sustained, then development will stagnate after a point of time. Exploiting resources unethically will ultimately undo the development that a country may have achieved. This is because, in the future, those resources will not be available for further progress.

Meeting the basic needs of all that requires the distribution of resources is our moral responsibility. It becomes a moral obligation to hand over the earth to the future generation in good order. But, it is realised that if the resources (non-renewable) are utilized fully then these will deplete so fast that it will not meet the production capacity of the future generation. The economic development achieved today in such a manner cannot be sustained for a long time as the production capacity of the future generations in the absence of productive resources reduces. Therefore, sustainable development is the process of economic development that aims at meeting the needs of the present generation without comprising the needs of future generations. Sustainable development maximizes the welfare of both present and future generations. In other words, it is the process of economic growth that is sustained over a long period of time without causing any fall in the quality of life of future generations.

While globalisation has benefited well-off consumers and also producers with skill, education and wealth, many small producers and workers have suffered as a result of the rising competition. Removal of trade barriers and liberalization policies of the governments to facilitate globalization have hit the local producers and manufacturers hard. Globalisation and the pressure of competition have substantially changed the lives of workers. Faced with growing competition, most employers these days prefer to employ workers ‘flexibly’. This means that workers’ jobs are no longer secure.

Explain briefly any four factors that affect the working capital requirement of a company.

Answer»

Following are the factors affecting working capital of a company:

(i) Length of operating cycle/Production cycle: Operating cycle refers to the length of the manufacturing cycle, i.e. the periods taken to convert raw materials into finished products. Longer period means more working capital is required and vice-versa.

(ii) Credit policy/Credit allowed: If liberal credit terms are given and a liberal policy is followed, then the, company would require more working capital as there is less cash inflow and vice-versa.

(iii) Nature of business: Manufacturing firm requires high amount of working capital as compared to a trading organisation, to convert raw materials into finished goods.

(iv) Scale of operations: Large amount of working capital is required by firm operating on a large scale of operations in terms of debt, inventory, etc. as compared to small scale firms.

(v) Seasonal factor: Higher amount of working capital is required by the organisation during its peak season as the level of activities is higher as compared to lean season.

(vi) Business cycle: During boom period, when sales are high, higher amount of working capital is required as compared to depression period.

(vii) Credit availed: If it is difficult to avail credit by the firm (on its purchases) from suppliers then, higher amount of working capital is required.

(viii) Availability of raw material: Higher lead time (i.e. time lag between the placement of order and actual receipt of the materials and interrupted availability of raw material will raise the requirements of working capital.

(ix) Operating efficiency: Less requirement of working capital will be there in a firm in the presence of best sales effort, ideal debtors turnover ratio and higher inventory turnover ratio.

(x) Level of competition: Working capital requirement will be more if level of competition is high.

(xi) Inflation: At a higher rate of inflation, working capital requirement will also higher.

(xii) Growth prospects: If an organisation has planned for higher growth prospects then its requirement for working capital will be higher.

Describe briefly the relationship between controlling and planning.

Answer»

Planning and controlling are mutually inter-related and inter-dependent activities because:

(i) Controlling is based on planning: Planning provides standards used in controlling to compare with actual performance.

(ii) Planning without controlling is meaningless: Controlling ensures that commitments under the plans are fulfilled and events confirm the plans.

(iii) Planning is prescriptive and controlling is evaluative: Planning prescribes the most appropriate course of action for achieving objectives while controlling evaluates whether decision have been translated into desired actions.

(iv) Both are forward looking: Planning is looking ahead as it is based on forecast about future and prepared for future only. Controlling aims also to improve future performance, if found any deviations.

(v) Both are looking back: Controlling is looking back as it measures and compares actual performance with standards fixed in the past. Planning is also a backward looking function as plans are guided by the past experiences.

(iii) Lack of confidence of superior on his subordinates: Communication process is hampered when superior do not have faith or confidence on the competence of their subordinates. In such cases, superior may not seek advice or opinion of the subordinates.

(iv) Fear of challenge to authority: A superior always aims to maintain a higher position and prestige in the organisation. If he fears that a particular communication may adversely affect his authority, then he may with hold such communication.

6596.

‘Planning and controlling are mutually interrelated and interdependent activities.’ How?

Answer»

Planning and controlling are interdependent and interrelated activities. Without planning, there is no basis for controlling activities and without effective controlling, planned activities cannot be properly implemented and there cannot be improvement in future plans. In the absence of plans, it is not possible to measure and assess performance. Whether performance is good, bad or reasonable it cannot be determined without specified standards. Likewise, in the absence of controlling, no purpose can be served by planning. Predetermined goals can be achieved only through the process of control which involves noting deviations from standards and taking corrective decisions, besides revising plans. Controlling also ensures realizing planned goals efficiently. Planning and controlling are thus, closely interrelated and infact reinforce each other. Planning, based on facts, makes controlling easier. Effective controlling improves future planning. It is often stated that planning is looking ahead and controlling is looking back. Controlling seeks to compel events conform to plans. It tries to compare actual performance with the standards set in advance. As actual performance related to the past, it may be said that controlling is looking back. However, this is not true, Like planning, control is also forward looking. Controlling helps in the adoption of new and revision of existing plans on the basis of actual performance against standards. Controlling provides valuable information derived from past experience for future planning. It ensures better utilization of resources in future by rectifying past features.
