Sucheta Menon read the following report regarding 'Global Warming'. She was shocked to discover that thiscould be the result of human activities, notably the release into the atmosphere of greenhouse gases — probably carbon dioxide — which let in sunlight and trap its heat like the glass-walls of a greenhouse. Write a letter to the Editor of a newspaper, in 120 words on 'Global Warming‘. You can refer to your M.C.B. unit "Environment"

Subject: Global Warming

Sir,

I was quite perturbed after reading an article on 'Global Warming‘ in the Sunday edition (March 6) of your esteemed paper. The report clearly held human activities responsible for this new threat to the existence of human beings on earth. The frequency of El Ninos on earthrise stronger, according to the writer, and Earth is near its warmest point in a million years. And all because of the release of greenhouses in the atmosphere. It is shocking to learn that human activities like burning of fossil fuel and deforestation, have caused the concentration of greenhouse gases. We have been warned that there will be a further rise in temperature in the 21st century which will lead to rise in sea levels, and expansion of sub-tropical deserts. There will be frequent and intense extreme weather conditions, extinction of species and changes in agricultural yields. It is encouraging to note that on November 2009, 187 states signed and ratified an agreement to reduce global warming. Strong warning was given to reduce emissions, adaptation to the effects of global warming and use of geo-engineering to remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. I sincerely hope, your paper will take a leading part in informing the public of their role in reducing global warming.

Yours faithfully,

SuchetaMenon

You witnessed a quarrel among a group of boys outside school yesterday. Write a diary entry in about 100-120 words giving an account of the quarrel and your reactions.

Answer»

25th July 2015

10:00 PM

Friday

How violent and annoying group rivalries can become! I watched a group of boys rushing towards the main gate. They were shouting loudly and waving sticks. They surrounded the students of the other group and began to hit them mercilessly. I went near them to pacify them but to no avail. On inquiring I found that the fight was on a very trivial matter. It pained to realise that how little tolerant we are. Some of us just don‘t see reasons and get violent for nothing, in the process harm others. Meanwhile a teacher passing by intervened and put a stop to the quarrel. I was thankful that it all got over.

Once upon a time there lived three friends. Their names were Punit, Samarth and Pawan. They were exemplary neighbours. Difficult days gripped them. They left their town in search of livelihood. They reached a dense forest and by that they were dog-tired. When they were settling to retire they found a purse full of gold coins. Their happiness knew no bounds. They decided to divide it into three equal parts.

Being hungry they decided to satisfy their hunger first. Punit and Samarth sent Pawan to fetch food from the roadside eatery that was on the outskirts of the forest.A terrible idea flashed in the mind of Pawan. He said to himself, ‖Why to share the booty. If I poison the food , they will die and I will be sole master of the treasure.‖ Accordingly he mixed poison in the food meant for Punit and Samarth. Punit and Samarth also thought to kill Pawan and divide the treasure between them on the fifty-fifty norm. When Pawan came back they killed him. Before dividing the booty they settled down to have food. Eating the poisonous food they fell down dead. Thus purse of gold coins stared at them and grinned loudly.

(a) The bluish colour predominates in clear sky. (b) Violet colour is seen at the bottom of the spectrum when white light is dispersed by a prism. State reason to explain these observations.

Answer»

(a) The intensity of scattered light varies inversely as fourth power of wavelength (i. e., I∝ 1/λ4). In visible light blue colour has minimum wavelength, so it is scattered most, that is why bluish colour predominates in a clear sky.

(b) While light consists of infinite wavelengths starting from 400nm (violet) to 750nm (red). The refractive index of proton is maximum for violet and minimum for red; so prism separates constituent colours of white light and causes maximum deviation for violet colour. That is why violet colour is seen at the bottom of spectrum when white light is dispersed through a prism

Explain any two advantages and two disadvantages of franchising to franchisee.

Answer»

Advantages:

a. Product acceptance : The franchisee usually enters into a business that has an accepted name, product or service. The franchisee does not have to spend resources trying to establish the credibility of the business. That credibility already exists based on the years the franchise has existed.

2. Management expertise: Another important advantage to the franchisee is the managerial assistance provided by the franchisor. Each new franchisee is often required to take a training program on all aspects of operating the franchise. This training could include classes in accounting, personnel management marketing and production.

3. Capital requirements: Starting a new venture can be costly in terms of both time and money. The franchise offers an opportunity to start a new venture with up-front support that could save the entrepreneur's significant time and possibly capital.

4. Knowledge of the market: Any established franchise business offers the entrepreneur years of experience offered to the franchisee that details the profile of the target customer and the strategies that should be implemented once the operation has begun. This is particularly important because of regional and local differences in markets.

5. Operating and structural controls: Two problems that many entrepreneurs have in starting a new venture are maintaining quality control of products and services and establishing effective managerial controls. And this can be overcome with the help of franchising.

Disadvantages:

1. Right and the only way of doing things: Entering into a franchise contract limits the degree of freedom for the franchise. As such, one gets an over-guided and overinfluenced degree of control exerted by the franchisor. This results in losing the freedom to innovate to some extent.

2. Continuing cost implication: Over and above the original franchise fee and royalties, a percentage of revenue gets shared perpetually with the franchisor. The franchisor may also charge additional amounts towards sharing the cost for services provided such as advertising and training.

3. Risk of franchisor getting bought: The franchisee faces serious problems and difficulties when the franchisor either fails or gets bought out by another company.

4. Inability to provide services: The disadvantages to the franchisee usually centre around the inability of the franchisor to provide services advertising and location. When promises made in the franchise agreement are not kept, the franchisee may be left without any support in important areas.
