How does the make-up and costume enhances the value of the performance of the actors in a play on stage?

Answer»

Make-up, though regarded as necessary, its vast possibilities for effectiveness is generally underestimated, and thus not much heed or importance is given to make-up by directors and even actors.

Directors and actors should also know how stage lighting, with different colours, can affect the make-up. However, it is not always the most complicated make-up which is the most effective but it is the appropriate make-up that brings out the desired effectiveness. It is also important to know that make-up can be learned only by practice and experience and not by reading books.

The costume design helps in establishing the changes in a character, its development and the process of transformation within the play. It will indicate relationships between characters and help in changing the appearance of an actor for a role in a play. It should also help him/her to feel the character, making it possible for him to get under the skin of that role. Besides all this, costumes have to be aesthetically pleasing, functional and comfortable for an actor to perform during the play.

Give three reasons why modulation of a message signal is necessary for long distance transmission.

Answer»

For a long distance transmission of the message signal, we need modulation because of the following reasons.

(i) Low energy: The message signals when converted to e.m. waves, do not have the sufficient energy to travel up to the long distance, because of their low frequency. Hence these message signals are modulated with high-frequency carrier signals before sending because carrier signals have high energy for long distance transmission.

(ii) Size of Antenna: For the effective Transmission by an antenna, the size of the antenna should be at least of the size λ/4 where λ is the wavelength of the signal to be sent. Thus for an em wave of the audio signal of frequency is 20 kHz, we need an antenna of size λ/4  i.e. nearly 3.75 km high, which is practically impossible. Hence, these low-frequency signals first modulated to high-frequency signals before transmission to get the proper size of the antenna.

(iii) Mixing of signals:- When a number of signals are transmitted simultaneously, all these signals will get mixed up and at the end, we get a mixed signal, which is very difficult to separate. Therefore to remove this limitation, transmission is done at high frequency and a band of frequency is allotted to each user at the end, as done for radio and TV channels.

11057.

Give three reasons why modulation of a message signal is necessary for long distance transmission.

Answer»

 Stating the three reasons

The required three reasons are :

(i) A reasonable length of the transmission antenna.

(ii) Increase in effective power radiated by the antenna.

(iii) Reduction in the possibility of a 'mix-up' of different signals

Detailed Answer :

For a long distance Transmission of message signal we need modulation because of following reasons.

(i) Low energy: The message signals when converted to e.m. waves, do not have the sufficient energy to travel up to long distance ,because of their low frequency. Hence these message signals are modulated with high frequency carrier signals before being send because carrier signals have high energy for long distance transmission.

(ii) Size of Antenna: For the effective Transmission by an antenna ,the size of antenna should be at least of the size , λ/4 where l is the wavelength of signal to be send. Thus for an em wave of audio signal of frequency is 20 kHz, we need an antenna of size 4λ/4 i.e. nearly 3.75 km high, which is practically impossible. Hence, these low frequency signals first modulated to high frequency signals before transmission to get the proper size of antenna.

(iii) Mixing of signals :- When number of signals are transmitted simultaneously, all these signals will get mixed up and at the end we get mixed signal, which is very difficult to separate. Therefore to remove this limitation, transmission is done at high frequency and a band of frequency is allotted to each user at the end , as done for radio and TV channels.

Sub: Rising road rage in Delhi

Dear sir

Recently as I was driving from Noida to my office in Rajeev Chowk I witnessed a horrifying incident of road rage. An angry driver chased a car being driven by a lady driver and blocked her. The nervous driver and the enraged one had an altercation for twenty minutes before they were pacified by the drivers of other vehicles who were stuck in the jam thus created.

Most of the road rage incidents occur as a result of misunderstanding or ignorance. Thousands of road accidents are a result of simple mistakes on the road. However, not all road rage incidents result in accident but involve aggressive acts.

The main cause of the most road rage is based on stress. Most aggressive drivers lose their patience and temper as a result of frustration. At other times drivers are in rush for money or other personal issues. There is an urgent need to create awareness about road rage and the triggers that unleash it.

You are requested to give some space to this issue in your esteemed daily as it is taking dangerous proportions.

Sub: Rising cases of eve-teasing in Delhi

Sir,

Recently while travelling in a local bus I witnessed a case of eve-teasing which pained me a lot.

Eve-teasing has posed a serious threat to the women of our society. There is hardly any girl or woman who has never been the target of eve-teasers.

Bus stops, autorickshaw stands are the favourite haunts of the eve-teasers who seem to have no other business than passing lewd remarks on women who happen to pass by them. Eve-teasing is a crime. Women themselves must take the initiative to put an end to it. But women generally ignore the eve-teasers as they fear the evil consequences which might befall them in future.

It is this fear of the women-folk which gives the eve-teasers the courage to pass objectionable comments on them.

Women are human beings and have equal rights to move freely in society like their male counterparts. Women should shed their fear and confront the eve-teasers boldly. This is the only way to teach a lesson to such culprits.

Yours truly

Janvi

Read the following extract and rewrite it from the point of view of the friend of the narrator :You may begin with : My friend was scheduled to die on May 1945.]“Don’t call me Herman anymore,” I said to my brother. “Call me 94983”. I was put to work in the camp’s crematorium, loading the dead into a hand-cranked elevator. I, too, felt dead. Hardened, I had become a number. Soon my brothers and I were sent to Schlieben, one of Buchenwald’s sub-camps near Berlin. One morning I thought I heard my mother’s voice. “Son,” she said softly but clearly, “I am going to send you an angel.” Then I woke up. Just a dream. A beautiful dream. But in this place there could be no angels. There was only work. And hunger. And fear.A couple of days later, I was walking around the camp, around the barracks, near the barbed-wire fence where the guards could not easily see. I was alone. On the other side of the fence, I spotted someone : a little girl with light, almost luminous curls. She was half hidden behind a birch tree.I glanced around to make sure no one saw me. I called to her softly in German. “Do you have something to eat?” She didn’t understand.I inched closer to the fence and repeated the question in Polish. She stepped forward. I was thin and gaunt, with rags wrapped around my feet, but the girl looked unafraid. In her eyes, I saw life. She pulled an apple from her woollen jacket and threw it over the fence.I grabbed the fruit and, as I started to run away, I heard her say faintly, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

Answer»

My friend Herman was scheduled to die in the gas Chamber on May 10, 1945 at 10 : 000 A.M. Herman and his brothers were transported in a cattle car to Germany. They arrived at the Buchenwald concentration camp one night and were led into a crowded barrack. The next day they were issued uniforms and identification numbers.

Herman said to his brother not to call him by his name but “call him 94983”. Herman was put to work in crematorium, loading the dead into a hand-cranked elevator. He felt dead, because now he had become a number. Soon he and his brothers were sent to Schlieben, one of Buchenwalds’ sub-camps near Berlin. One morning Herman heard his mother’s voice saying softly but clearly ‘Son, I am going to send you an angel !’. When he woke up, he realized it was a beautiful dream. But in that place there were no angels. There was only work, hunger and fear.

He was thin and gaunt, with rags wrapped around his feet, but the girl looked unafraid. He saw life in her eyes.

She pulled an apple from her woollen jacket and threw it over the fence. Herman grabbed the fruit and as he started to run away, he heard her say faintly that she would see him the next day.

Describe Ms. Sullivan's teaching methods.

Answer»

Miss Anne Sullivan can rightly be called Anne's guide, mentor and teacher. She brought about a sweeping change in Helen's life and made her feel that there was an immeasurably contrast between her two lives - before and after the arrival of Miss Sullivan. She made her transcend her physical barriers. She taught her to communicate by spellings the words on her hands with her fingers. Her angelic touch, meticulous planning, deep commitment worked wonders for Helen. She started understanding the world in a better way and developed an optimistic approach towards life. Learning was made playful by the instructional and innovative ideas of Miss Sullivan. All the subjects whether it was History or Geography or Zoology or Botany were made easier by Anne Sullivan's teaching in play - way manner. Helen never felt that she was being educated. Rather she believed that she was a little mass of possibilities which were unfolded and developed. Miss Helen felt that before her education, she was like a ship without compass or sounding line and had no way of knowing how near the harbor was but Anne Sullivan's advent in her life took away all the bitterness from her life and brought a fresh breeze of joy and love in the life of Helen.

Miss Sullivan had a peculiar sympathy with her pleasures and desires. She quickly went over uninteresting details and never nagged Helen with question to see if she remembered the day before yesterdays lesson. She introduced the dry technicalities of science little by little and made every subject so real that Helen could not help remembering what she taught.

What are Helen's opinions about examinations?

Answer»

Helen had high hopes from college life, but was left completely disillusioned. She found that there was too much stress on learning and no time for self-analysis or introspection, The pupils were trained in cramming the lessons and the process of understanding and relating with the lesson was completely missing. The predominant thought in the minds of the pupils was written tests and the exams. There was too much of choice with too little use of it. She found the pattern to be completely disorganized and non-synchronized. Helen felt that she was a bull in a China shop. Here China shop refers to the examination system. According to Helen, before an examination she had to go through many different aspects of study due to which her mind became overburdened with heterogeneous matter which would almost disappear while attempting an exam. She tried to remember the points and jot down to put them into order but unfortunately she could not make head and tail out of it. It seemed as if the answers had been buried deep in the pool of thoughts of mind and searching for them equated looking for a bit of silk in a rag bag.

She felt examinations to be the 'chief bugbears of my college life'. She always found her courage oozing out at her finger's ends. During exams, the days are spent in cramming one's mind with mystic formulae, indigestibie dates which she considered as unpalatable diets. The dreaded hour i.e., the examination hour is the most perplexing as one's memory and the sense of discrimination takes wings and fly away. That's why she never liked examinations.

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:1. Cricket is a global passion, played everywhere from Test match arenas to village greens, tropical beaches and dusty back lots. Cricket is the world’s second most popular spectator sport after football. 2. The origin of cricket is somewhere in the Dark Ages. All research concedes that the game derived from a very old, widespread and uncomplicated pastime by which one player served up an object, be it a small piece of wood or a ball, and another hit it with a suitably fashioned club. Cricket was first recorded in- 16th century England, and it was played in grammar schools, farm communities and everywhere in between. But things really took off when 18th century nobles realized it was a great sport. 3. The oldest surviving set of cricket laws date from 1744 - printed on a handkerchief, naturally. It’s now in the MCC Museum at Lord’s in London. The oldest permanent fixture is the annual Eton v Harrow match, played since 1805. A young Lord Byron turned out for Harrow in the first match, though history doesn’t record how poetic - or “mad, bad and dangerous” - his bowling was. 4. The first international match was in 1877 when Australia beat England in Melbourne. The match was dubbed a “Test”, since the gruelling nature of playing over five days was deemed the ultimate “test” for any side. But it was Australia’s first win on English soil - in 1882 at The Oval in London - that led to matches between the two nations being christened the Ashes. Following the defeat, newspapers published an obituary mourning “the death of English cricket”, adding that “the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia”. 5. A One Day International (ODI) is a form of limited overs cricket, played between two teams with international status, in which each team faces a fixed number of overs, usually 50. The Cricket World Cup is played in this format. The international one-day game is a late twentieth-century development. The first ODI was played on 5 January 1971 between Australia and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The following questions on the basis of the passage you have read : (a) According to the passage, how did the game of Cricket originate? (b) Where can we find the oldest sets of Cricket laws? (c) Which match did Lord Byron play? (d) When was the first international match played? (e) Which countries played that match? (f) Why were the matches between Australia and England titled “The Ashes”? (g) In which format is the Cricket world cup played ? (h) When did the ODIs begin? (i) Which word in paragraph no.4 means the same as ‘exhausting’?

Indecision and insincerity are big obstacles on the path to success. One should have the capability, capacity and resources to turn one's dreams into reality. Mere desire cannot bring; you success. The desire should be neighed against factors like capability and resources. This is the basic requirement of success. The next important thing is the eagerness, seriousness and the urge to be successful. It is the driving force which decides the success. It is the first step on the ladder of success. One needs to pursue one's goals with sincerity and passion. One should always be in high spirit. Lack of such spirit leads to an inferiority complex which is a big obstruction on the path of success. Time is also a deciding factor. Only the punctual and committed have succeeded in life. Lives of great men are examples of this. They had all these qualities in plenty which helped them rise to the peak of success. Hard labour is one of the basic requirements of success. There is no substitute for hard labour. It alone can take one to the peak of success. Every success was a ratio of five percent inspiration and ninety-five percent perspiration. It is the patience, persistence and perseverance which play a decisive role in achieving success. Failures are the pillars of success as they are our stepping-stones and we must get up and start again and be motivated. On the basis of your reading of the passage, answer the following questions in 30-40 words each:(a) To whom does success come certainly? (b) What are the basic things in life we need to achieve success ? (c) What did great men have in plenty to rise to the peak of success ? Read the passage carefully.I was born in the small but beautiful mountain village of Nakuri near Uttarkashi in Garhwal, with the gurgling, playful Bhagirathi river, flowing nearby. My parents were a hard-working and extremely self-contained couple. Even though our family was poor, barely managing the essentials, my father taught us how to live and maintain dignity and self-respect-the most treasured family value till today. At the same time my parents also practised the creed, “Kindness is the essence of all religion.” They were large-hearted, inviting village folk passing by to have tea at our home, and gave grain to the sadhus and pandits who came to the house. This characteristic has been ingrained in me so deeply that I am able to reach out to others and make a difference in their lives — whether it is in my home, in society or at the work place. I was the third child in the family-girl, boy, girl, girl and boy in that order-and quite a rebel. I developed a tendency to ask questions and was not satisfied with the customary way of life for a girl-child. When I found my elder brother, Bachchan, encouraging our youngest brother, Raju, to take up mountaineering I thought, why not me ? I found that my brothers were always getting preferential treatment and all opportunities and options were open to them. This made me even more determined to not only do what the boys were doing, but to do it better. The general thinking of mountain people was that mountaineering as a sport was not for them. They considered themselves to be born mountaineers as they had to go up and down mountain slopes for their daily livelihood and even for routine work. On the other hand, as a student, I would look curiously at foreign backpackers passing by my village and wonder where they were going. I would even invite them to my house and talk to them to learn more about their travels. The full significance of this came to me later when I started working. The foreigners took the trouble to come all the way to the Himalayas in order to educate themselves on social, cultural and scientific aspects of mountaineering, as well as to seek peace in nature’s gigantic scheme of things.Answer the following questions : (a) What does the author tell us about the financial condition of her parents ? (b) What is the most treasured value of the author’s family ? (c) Give an example to show that the author’s parents were very hospitable. (d) What kind of girl was the author ? (e) How do you know that the author’s parents discriminated between sons and daughters ? (f) Why do the mountain people consider themselves to be born mountaineers ? (g) Why would the author invite foreign mountaineers to her house ? (h) Why were foreigners drawn to the Himalayas ?

Answer»

(b) The most treasured value of the author’s family is to maintain dignity and self-respect.

(c) The author’s parents were hospitable. They invited village folk passing by to have tea and gave grain to the sadhus and pandits who came to the house.

(d) The author was the third child in the family. She was a rebel who was not satisfied with the customary ways of life for a girl-child.

(e) The author’s brothers always got preferential treatment and all opportunities and options were open to them.

(f) The mountain people consider themselves to be born mountaineers because they have to go up and down the mountain slopes for their livelihood and routine work.

(g) The author would invite foreign mountaineers to her house to learn more about their travels,

(h) The foreigners were drawn to the Himalayas to educate themselves social, cultural and scientific aspects of mountaineering and to seek place in nature’s gigantic scheme of things.

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow : Orangutans require less food than humans. When they eat, orangutans nibble mostly on ripe fruit, along with smaller portions of leaves and seeds. Even in captivity, this diet doesn't diminish an orangutan's get-up and go attitude. They wake up early, after a long night sleep. Then they spend the day socializing, exploring their indoor and outdoor enclosures. They also regularly engage in games with the researchers. These activities of the orangutans, taken together add up to the same level of exercise performed by humans in physically demanding agricultural lifestyles. In the wild, orangutans live in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra where food availability is highly variable and unpredictable. Like fresh fruit from the garden, the pickings are often feast or famine. But the trade-off is, that low energy means, less energy is available to do things like growing and reproducing. So orangutans grow slowly and reproduce slowly, which is evolutionarily risky because an orangutan might die before it passes on its genes. Human mothers can have a child every two to four years, but orangutans in the wild only reproduce every seven to eight years. Orangutans are among the most intelligent primates; they use a variety of sophisticated tools and construct elaborate sleeping nests each night from branches and foliage. These apes have been extensively studied for their learning abilities. There may even be distinctive cultures within populations. Both orangutan species are considered to be endangered, with the Sumatran orang-utan being critically endangered. Human activities have caused severe decline in the populations and ranges of both species. Threats to wild orangutan populations include poaching, habitat destruction and the illegal pet trade. Several conservation and rehabilitation organisations are dedicated to the survival of orangutans in the wild.We will lose much information about our closest relatives and our own evolutionary history if we let them get extinct.(a) According to Pontzer Orangutans mostly eat .........(b) It is seen that Orangutans and humans do almost the same ........(c) Orangutans grow and reproduce slowly as they ........... (d) We do not want the Orangutans to become extinct as .........(e) The word 'Unpredictable' means to be ......... (f) Orangutans are among ........... primates. (g) ...............are the critically endangered species. (h) There is a severe decline in the population of Orangutans because of ............... (i) Several conservation organisations are dedicated to ................

Read the passage given below :India is on the path of greatness. But where will this greatness come from ? Is it only the government of a country that can lead it to greatness ? Is it only the political leaders that can shape the future of a nation ? No. The true greatness of any nation lies in its people. There is capability for greatness in every citizen of the land. For, the true owners of our nation are its citizens. The government is only the guardian of the nation and is ready to serve the people of the country. This is what a true democracy should be like. However, for a true democracy to succeed, the citizens have to play a larger role and fulfill their duties towards the nation. The most famous line from the US President John F Kennedy’s inaugural address is, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”. What is this but a call for citizens to rise to the occasion and do their duty ? In a true democracy, people get the leaders they deserve. If we simply sit in our drawing rooms and debate the quality of leadership this country has, we will achieve nothing. We have to play an active role in creating a new type of leadership because it is we, the people, who own the nation. We can achieve this kind of leadership firstly by educating the youth of the country which is of supreme importance. Second, parents need to teach their children the importance of obeying laws. Children need to learn and be encouraged to express their talents and skills and consider themselves as the real strength of their nation. We need to encourage new ideas and creativity. Whether you start a small business, write an article, teach a child, shop at local stores, not pollute your environment, participate in cleanliness drives, create a work of art, volunteer for some social cause or another similar effort, you are performing your duty as a citizen. You are contributing to the consciousness of the community development and this will begin the process of change. Considering that most young people spend most of their time at school or at work, it is also important for teachers and employers to inculcate a sense of duty in the hearts and minds of young people.Answer the following questions briefly :(a) Where does the true greatness of any nation lie ? (b) What is the role of the government? (c) What did the US President say in his inaugural address ? (d) How can a true democracy develop ? (e) How can we achieve good leadership ? (f) How can children consider themselves as the real strength of their nation ? (g) When do you perform your duty as a citizen ? Write any one activity, (h) Who should inculcate a sense of duty in the children?

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow :1. Man always sees tigers as the symbols of pride, our deepest fears, desires and aspirations. The tiger is typically sighted as the most fearsome predator which is admired for its lithe muscles, courage and beauty. The tiger’s body has a hundred different uses, such as the fat is believed to be the tonic for rheumatism and the flesh offers considerable strength to those who eat it. 2. Tigers are powerful animals that are capable of taking on their prey single-handedly and subduing large prey. They have forelimbs and broad shoulders, with the help of which tigers grapple their prey while holding onto it with the retractable, long claws of the broad forepaws. 3. Tigers have muscular bodies bearing strong and powerful forelimbs and large heads. The colour of the coat varies, depending entirely on the subspecies. These big cats also display prominent black stripes that run across their body. No tiger has stripes that resemble other counterparts i.e. each one has its own unique stripes. The black stripes of tigers serve as a natural camouflage for hiding themselves amongst the dappled shadows and the long grasses of their surroundings. 4. The tigers once inhabited all of Asia ranging from Eastern Turkey to the Caspian Sea, including the southern Tibetan plateau and the Sea of Okhotsk. Sadly speaking, the tiger’s range has been limited to a few major habitats. Currently, tigers have become extinct in Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, and the Indus Valley of Pakistan. They were once widespread throughout India including the foothills of the Himalayas, through Bhutan, Nepal, Sikkim, Myanmar, and Assam, but the population has dramatically reduced in the Indian Subcontinent. Unfortunately, extreme hunting together with poaching makes tigers an endangered species. 5. It is sad to contemplate the extinction of an animal species due to the inexorable forces of nature, but it is infinitely more depressing when the extinction is caused by supposedly responsible human beings. (a) What does man perceive the tiger as ? (b) What is the tiger admired for ? (c) Which part of the tiger’s body cures rheumatism ? (d) How do tigers take down their prey ? (e) What is unique about the tiger’s stripes ? (f) How do the black stripes help tigers ?(g) Which are the countries where tigers have become extinct ? (h) How are humans responsible for making them an endangered species ?

He lived most of his childhood in Marceline, Missouri, where he began drawing, painting and selling pictures to neighbours and family friends. Disney attended McKinley High School in Chicago, where he took drawing and photography classes and was a contributing cartoonist for the school paper. At night, he took courses at the Chicago Art Institute. When Disney was 16, he dropped out of school to join the army but was rejected for being underage. Instead, he joined the Red Cross and was sent to France for a year to drive an ambulance. When Disney returned from France in 1919, he moved back to Kansas City to pursue a career as a newspaper artist. His brother Roy got him a job at the Pesmen-Rubin Art Studio, where he met cartoonist Ubbee Ert Iwwerks, better known as Ub Iwerks. From there, Disney worked at the Kansas City Film Ad Company, where he made commercials based on cutout animation. Around this time, Disney began experimenting with a camera, doing hand-drawn cel animation and decided to open his own animation business. The cartoons were hugely popular, and Disney was able to acquire his own studio, upon which he bestowed the same name. Laugh-O-Gram hired a number of employees, including Harman’s brother Hugh and Iwerks. They did a series of seven minute fairy tales that combined both live action and animation, which they called Alice in Cartoonland. By 1923, however, the studio had become burdened with debt, and Disney was forced to declare bankruptcy.Disney and his brother, Roy, soon pooled their money and moved to Hollywood. Iwerks also relocated to California, and there the three began the Disney Brother’s Studio. Their first deal was with New York distributor Margaret Winkler, to distribute their Alice cartoons. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow :1. A sparrow is a small bird which is found throughout the world. There are many different species of sparrows. Sparrows are only about four to six inches in length. Many people appreciate their beautiful song. Sparrows prefer to build their nests in low places-usually on the ground, clumps of grass, low trees and low bushes. In cities they build their nests in building nooks or holes. They rarely build their nests in high places. They build their nests out of twigs, grasses and plant fibres. Their nests are usually small and well-built structures.2. Female sparrows lay four to six eggs at a time. The eggs are white with reddish brown spots. They hatch within eleven to fourteen days. Both the male and female parents care for the young. Insects are fed to the young after hatching. The large feet of the sparrows are used for scratching seeds. Adult sparrows mainly eat seeds. Sparrows can be found almost everywhere, where there are humans. Many people throughout the world enjoy these delightful birds.3. The sparrows are some of the few birds that engage in dust bathing. Sparrows will first scratch a hole in the ground with their feet, then lie in it and fling dirt or sand over their bodies with flicks of their wings. They will also bathe in water, or in dry or melting snow. Water bathing is similar to dust bathing, with the sparrow standing in shallow water and flicking water over its back with its wings, also ducking its head under the water. Both activities are social, with upto a hundred birds participating at once, and are followed by preening and sometimes group singing.4. Due to their small size, sparrows are prey to numerous predators within their native environments all around the world. Today, there is little concern over the sparrow populations, although it is possible that populations will be affected by the ever changing weather conditions as a result of global warming and therefore, drastic climate change.(a) The chief food for the adult sparrow is __________. (b) Sparrows live wherever__________. (c) The word, ‘species’ means__________. (d) Sparrows __________in high places. (e) __________ take care of the young sparrows. (f) Sparrows take bath in ________. (g) Bathing for the sparrows is a _________. (h) Find a word in Para 4 which means the same as ‘killers’.

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow :Perhaps the environmental crisis at hand has not yet touched your life, but the time is shortly to come. Recent NASA reports of a 60% loss of ozone over the Arctic provide an explanation for increased severity in the world’s weather patterns which has only begun to affect us whether directly or indirectly. The social, political and economic implications are difficult to imagine as our ozone layer continues to thin, forests disappear and desertification is occurring at an alarming rate.Today, almost 1 million acres of forest disappear each week. This alarming rate of deforestation is forcing many world economies to rethink their business and manufacturing practices. A seventy-feet tree cut for its lumber takes 65 years to replace. A seventy-feet bamboo cut for the market can be replaced in less than 3 months and bamboo is officially recognized as the world’s fastest growing plant. Some species can grow 3 feet per day!Driven by the constantly growing consumer demand for environmentally friendly products, bamboo is gaining momentum as a reliable source of high quality and durable green building material over traditional non-sustainable products. Bamboo is known to produce 30% more oxygen than a hardwood forest of comparable size, while preventing erosion, restoring soil, providing sweet edible shoots and removing toxins from contaminated soil. Ecologists tout bamboo as a logical, renewable source of building material. Many promote bamboo planting for erosion prevention, and to reverse the effects of global warming. Being a grass, bamboo regenerates without replanting after harvesting.Traditional hardwood lumber trees such as oak, maple, and birch take 40-50 years to regenerate. In the meantime, there is less oxygen produced, less carbon dioxide consumed and more soil runoff in the spot where those trees were harvested- all producing negative environmental effects. Our planet is suffering from resource depletion, habitat loss, species extinction, and ecosystem pollution. The choice of bamboo as a building material will greatly help reverse those negative trends.(a) According to NASA reports, there has been a loss of _________ ozone over the Arctic. (b) Use of bamboo is gaining momentum because __________. (c) The greatest advantage of bamboo is that it_______. (d) Traditional hardwood lumber trees __________. (e) ‘More soil run off in the spot’ means __________. (f) The antonym for the word ‘reliable’ is __________. (g) The problems troubling the earth are__________. (h) The author is promoting the use of _________as a building material.

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow :Popcorn, also known as popping corn, is a special variety of corn. Each kernel contains a tiny drop of water. When it is heated, the water expands causing the kernel to explode and flip inside out. Most US popcorn is grown in Nebraska and Indiana, and increasingly in Texas.Native Americans first discovered popcorn thousands of years ago in Guatemala or Mexico. It was popped in China during the Song Dynasty (960-279), as well as, in Sumatra and India long before Columbus reached the Americans. In 1519 when he invaded Mexico, Spanish Conquistador Hernando Cortes first saw popcorn when he met the Aztecs. Popcorn was important to the Aztecs as food, as decoration for ceremonial headdresses and necklaces, and as ornaments on statues of their gods. Around 1612, French explorers around the Great Lakes met Iroquois, who used heated sand in a pottery vessel to make popcorn. There is an unproven theory that an Indian named Quadequina brought a deerskin bag of popped corn for the first Thanksgiving feast. In 1948 and 1950, anthropologist Herbert **** and botanist Earle Smith discovered ears of popcorn in the Bat Cave of west central New Mexico. The ears measured from smaller than a penny to about 2 inches. They were determined to be about 5,600 years old.Colonial housewives served popcorn with sugar and cream for breakfast. Some colonists used a cylinder of thin sheet-iron that revolved on an axle in front of the fireplace to make popped corn.In 1885, Charles Cretors of Chicago, Illinois, invented the first popcorn machine. Street vendors were soon pushing steam or gas-powered poppers through fairs, parks and public exhibitions.Today much of the popcorn you buy at movies and fairs is popped in machines manufactured by the Cretors family.Americans eat more than 17 billion quarts of popcorn a year, an average of 60 quarts per person per year. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:"something is coming uphill", said Mother Wolf, twitching one ear. "Get ready." The bushes rustled a little in the thicket ind Father Wolf dropped on his haunches under him, ready for his leap. Then, if you had been watching, you would have seen the most wonderful thing in the world - the wolf checked in mid-spring. He made his leap before he saw what he was jumping at, and then he tried to stop himself. The result was that he had shot up straight into the air for four or five feet, landing almost where he had left the ground. "Man!" he snapped. "A man's cub' Look !" Directly in front of him, holding on a low branch, stood a naked brown baby who could just walk - as soft and as dimpled a little atom as ever came to a wolf's cave at night. He looked up into Father Wolf's face and laughed. "Is that a man's cub?" said Mother Wolf. "I have never seen one. Bring it here. How little! How naked! How bold!" she said softly. The baby was pushing his way between the cubs to get close to the warm hide. "Aha! He is taking his meal with the others. And so this is a man's cub. Now, was there ever a wolf that could boast of a man's cub among her children?" "I have heard now and again of such a thing, but never in our pack or in my time," said Father Wolf' "He is altogether without hair, and I could kill him with a touch of my foot. But see, he looks up and is not afraid." The moonlight was blocked out of the mouth of the cave, for Shere Khan's great square head and shoulders were thrust into the entrance. Tabaqui, behind him, was squeaking: "My lord, my lord, it went in here!" "Shere Khan does us great honour," said Father Wolf, but his eyes were very angry. "What does Shere Khan need?" "My quarry. A man's cub went this way," said Shere Khan. "Its parents have run off. Give it to me."Answer the following questions in 30-40 words each:(a) Why did Father Wolf drop on his haunches? (b) Why did he stop in the middle of his jump? (c) What did a man's cub look like? (d) What did it do to keep itself warm? (e) What did Shere-Khan tell Father Wolf ?

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow :1. Politeness has been well defined as benevolence in trifles. It is the desire to put those whom we meet perfectly at their ease, and save them from every kind of petty of discomfort and annoyance. The limited part of benevolence called politeness requires only an inclination to make them happy temporarily, while they are in our presence, and when this can be done without any sacrifice on our part or only with a slight sacrifice of personal comfort. 2. Politeness is said to be one of the important characteristics of civilised person. Politeness is the art of choosing among your thoughts. It must be implemented in every walk of life. When we deal with people elder to us we are polite. But, an honest polite person is polite with everyone, people of lower status, workers and even children. Not only with humans but also with animals we must be polite as they are our helpers. 3. Politeness is a skill. Like any other skill, you can master it with practice. The greatest enemy of politeness is ego. To be a polite person, you have to sacrifice your ego. It is difficult for an egoist to be polite. You have to imply politeness in your thinking, speech and actions. Actions work more than words. Polite actions will give fine results. Politeness will reduce your stress and boost you to be productive. Apart from your present benefits, you protect your future. Being polite makes you mentally healthy. In our daily life we come across many incidents with people nearby and ourselves.4. Different rules of behaviour have to be observed, accordingly as we are in the street or in the drawing-room, at home or at school, in the company of friends or of strangers. There is also to be considered the great diversity of social etiquette which distinguishes one country from another. 5. Politeness, besides being a duty that we owe to others, is a valuable possession for ourselves. It costs nothing, and yet may in many cases bring much profit. The great advantage of this excellence of conduct was very clearly expressed by Dr. Johnson, when he said that difference between a well-bred and an ill-bred man is that one immediately attracts your liking, the other your dislike.Find out the words that mean the same as under :(a) ‘insignificant’ (Paragraph 1) (b) ‘manners’ (paragraph 4) (c) ‘civil’ (Paragraph 5)

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow : Popcorn, also known as popping corn, is a special variety of corn. Each kernel contains a tiny drop of water. When it is heated, the water expands causing the kernel to explode and flip inside cut. Around 1672, French explorers around the Great Lakes met Iroquois, who used heated sand in a pottery vessel to make popcorn. There is an unproven theory that an Indian named Quadequina brought a deerskin bag of popped corn for the first Thanksgiving feast. hr 1948 and 1950, anthropologist Herbert **** and botanist Earle Smith discovered ears of popcorn in the Bat Cave of west central New, Mexico. The ears measured from smaller than a penny to about 2 inches. They were determined to be about 5,600 years old. Colonial housewives served popcorn with sugar and cream for breakfast. Some colonists used a cylinder of thin sheet-iron that revolved on an axle in front of the fireplace to make popped corn. In 1885, Charles Cretors of Chicago, Illinois, invented the first popcorn machine. Street vendors were soon pushing steam or gas-powered poppers through fairs, parks and public exhibitions. Today much of the popcorn you buy at movies and fairs is popped in machines manufactured by the Cretors family. Americans eat more than 17 billion quarts of popcorn a year, an average of 60 quarts per person per year. As the result of an elementary school project, popcorn became the official state snack food of Illinois. January 19 is National Popcorn Day, and October is National Popcorn Month.(a) Where are most popcorns grown?(b) Who discovered popcorn?(c) On which date is National popcorn Day celebrates?(d) When did Hernando Cortes first see popcorn?(e) With what did colonial housewives serve popcorn for breakfast?(f) What was the size of the ears discovered in the bat-cave ?(g) Who invented the first popcorn machine?(h) Which month is the National Popcorn month?(i) Find the word from the passage which means 'of indigenous origin or growth'.

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: 1. Now a days people generally think that there is nothing which is either right or wrong and the action which is the best suited to the situation must be taken. They don't worry whether their actions are moral or not. Their only concern is social and economic acceptability. Each one of us, at one time or the other, has heard the statement,"Okay, have it your own way" and so this is the way that many in the world live. 2. Righteousness is very simple. In every situation that we confront in life, there is either a right way or a wrong way to proceed. If we choose the right way, we are sustained in our actions by the principles of righteousness, in which there is power from the heavens above. If we choose the wrong way and act on that choice, there is no such heavenly power, we are alone and destined to fail. 3. The question arises. How do we know which is right and which is wrong ? The system of prayer is organized as a communication system to transmit concepts of truth into the minds of human beings. God, through our conscience,'ruh' or spirit enlightens our minds and gives us clarity of understanding of the concepts of truth. This is the way God teaches us to distinguish right from wrong. If we are willing to learn his ways and follow them, we will never have to guess and will always know for sure the difference between right and wrong. 4. Each one of us lives with his or her unique situation. There are challenges related to health, money, literacy, singleness, loneliness, oppression, abuse, transgression, and a never-ending list of existing conditions. The solution to all these challenges, is righteousness. In righteousness, there is the fulfillment of faith and hope. Every blessing that God has promised to his children is predicated upon obedience to his laws and commandments. Obedience to his laws and commandments is what makes us righteous, and that righteousness qualifies us to be worthy of the promised blessings. 5. In his benevolence, God has given us the law of repentance. Whenever there is disobedience to God's laws and commandments, the option of repentance is open to us. If we act upon this marvellous law, we will be forgiven for our disobedience and we can decide to become more righteous; thus repentance leads us to righteousness. In fact, most of the challenges that we have in morality can be solved by repentance and finally by righteousness. All religions in the world teach this very basic truth.Answer the given questions in 30-40 words each: (a) When do we feel isolated and are likely to fail ? (b) In which two ways can we face a difficult situation ? (c) In which way can we decide whether an action is right or not ? (d) How can we make ourselves peaceful and happy ? (e) How can we say that Cod is benevolent?

Answer»

Expected Answer/Value point of Test Item.

(a) If we choose the wrong way and act on that choice, there is no heavenly power with us and we are alone and destined to fail.

(b) In every situation that we confront there is either a right way or a wrong way to proceed. It depends on us, which path we follow.

(c) It is through the system of prayer that God transmits concepts of truth into the minds of human beings and gives us the clarity of understanding the concepts of right and wrong.

(d) We can make ourselves happy and peaceful by living righteously and in obedience to the laws of God. It gives joy and happiness to our soul. With it comes inner peace and comfort too.

(e) God is benevolent because he has given us the law of repentance. Whenever we disobey God’s laws and commandments, we can repent and become more righteous.
