“In a hypothetical market of mobile phones, the brand AWAAZ was leading the market share. Its nearest competitor VAARTA suddenly changed its strategy by bringing in a new model of the mobile phone at a relatively lesser price. In response, AWAAZ too slashed its price.” Based on the above information, identify the form of market represented and discuss any three features of the market.

Answer»

The form of market represented in the given paragraph is oligopoly.

Following are the three features of oligopoly :

1. Few firms – Few firms mean either only a few firms in number or a few big firms producing most of the output of the industry. The exact number of firms is not defined. The word ‘few’ signifies that the number of firms is manageable enough to make a guess of the likely reactions of rival by a firm.

2. Barriers to the entry of firms – The main reason why the number of firms is small is that there are barrieres which prevent entry of firms into industry. Patents, large capital, control over the crucial raw materials etc., prevent new firms from entering into industry. Only those who are able to cross these barriers are able to enter.

3. Non-price competition – Firms try to avoid price competition for the fear of price war. They use other methods like advertising, better services to customers, etc. to compete with each other.

Karan Nath took over ‘D’north Motor Company7 from his ailing father three months ago. In the past the company was not performing well. Karan was determined to improve the company’s performance. He observed that the methods of production, as well as selection of employees in the company, were not scientific. He believed that there was only one best method to maximise efficiency. He also felt that once the method is developed, the workers of the company should be trained to learn that ‘best method’. He asked the Production Manager to develop the best method and cany out the necessary training. The Production Manager developed this method using several parameters right from deciding the sequence of operations, place for men, machines and raw materials till the delivery of the product to the customers. This method was implemented throughout the organisation. It helped in increasing the output, improving the quality and reducing the cost and wastage. Identify and explain the principles and the technique of scientific management followed by the Production Manager in the above case.

Answer»

Following are the principles of scientific management followed by the Production Manager in the given case

1. Science, not rule of thumb – Taylor believed that there was one best method of maximising efficiency. This method could be developed through study and analysis. The method so developed should substitute the “Rule of Thumb” through the organisation. Scientific method involves investigation of traditional methods through work study, unifying the best practices and develop¬ing a standard method which would follow throughout the organisation. This can result in tremendous saving of time and materials.

2. Development of efficiency and prosperity – Scientific management requires development of each and every person to his greatest efficiency and prosperity. Scientific management emphasises the need for training to workers. Each person should be scientifically selected and should be given required training. This will ensure their greatest efficiency and prosperity for both company and workers.

Following is the technique of scientific management followed by the Production Manager in the given case:

Method study – Method study means a technique which involves the critical examination of plant layout, product design, material handling and work process. Method study is related to methods of performing of a job. The purpose of method study is to keep the production costs to the minimum by a proper mixture of resources. Explain briefly any four factors affecting the fixed capital requirements of an organisation.

Answer»

Following are the factors that affect the fixed capital requirements of a company :

1. Nature of business – A trading concern needs lower fixed capital since it does not require to purchase plant and machinery etc. A manufacturing concern would require heavy investment in fixed assets to purchase plant and machinery etc.

2. Growth prospects – If an organisation expects higher growth prospects, it will require higher investment in fixed assets to create higher capacity of production.

3. Diversification – More fixed capital will be required in case of companies which have diversity of production lines as compared to companies which do not have much of diversification.

4. Level of collaboration – If some business organisations share each other’s facilities, these organisations will require lesser fixed capital. If there is no collaboration, an organisation will require more fixed capital to rim its business smoothly.

5. Technology upgradation – Some assets such as computers become obsolete faster and are replaced much sooner than other fixed assets say furniture. Thus, such organisations which use assets which are prone to obsolescence require higher fixed capital to purchase such assets.

The Pig and the Cow

A wealthy man complained to his fast friend: “People despise me. They say I’m selfish and stingy. And yet in my last will and testament I have donated all that I own to charitable cause.” He could not understand why the people of the world judged him so unfairly. His friend said: “Well, I hope the story of the cow and the pig may teach you a lesson.” The pig came to the cow and complained: “People always say that you are amiable and friendly. I know you are amicable and pacific, you do give them milk.

But they get much, much more from me. I provide them with ham, bacon and lard and they even bake my feet. But everyone despises me. To all of them, I am just a pig, a hog. I fail to understand the reason.” She was pained at the double standards used by the people of this world. The cow brooded over the question and replied thoughtfully: “Perhaps it’s because I give while I am still alive!”. The pig realised the difference and never complained again. People judge you on what you do when you are alive and not what you do after death.

(iv) In the end she had to face financial losses.

(v) She was blackmailed by Miss. Mebbin.

Detailed Answer :

Mrs. Packletide was a jealous and materialistic lady. She was been portrayed as envious and vain. The statement 'fake pride ends up in misery' fits on her character. She belong to upper class society where people try to show off and consequently, become subjects of mockery. In this story Mrs. Packletide wanted to overshadow Loona Bimberton who talked of nothing else but her recent travel in an aeroplane by an Algerian Aviator. She decided to kill a tiger just to satisfy her vanity. She offered thousand rupees to the villagers to arrange the shooting of a tiger where less risk or exertion is arranged. The villagers readily agreed to help her. The night arrived when the killing was to be done.

A goat was tethered to a tree to act as a bait. They waited for sometime and then they saw a tiger approaching the goat. Mrs. Packletide aimed at him and fired. Both, the goat and the tiger fell down. Miss Mebbin noticed that the mortal wound was on the goat and the tiger had died of heart failure. She told Miss Mebbin that Loona Bimberton would be too happy to know, about this fact. Mrs. Packletide got the point. She realised that she had to do something so that Miss Mebbin didn't give her away. She bought her a weekend cottage at Darking. She had to face financial losses and in the end gave up hunting as 'incidental expenses' were too heavy. It was only her pride to show others her superiority that led to financial loss. Thus, the statement 'pride goes before a fall' is justified.

The statement 'only the bearer knows where the shoe pinches' relates aptly to the story 'The letter', which is a good example of the Karma theory. We should always respect the feelings of others and not disrespect and contempt the feeling of others. In 'The Letter' the protagonist', Ali's daughter got married and left him. His life turned over a new leaf. The man (Ali) who was a skilful hunter changed his way of life and waited day in and day out for a letter from Miriam, his daughter. He went to the postoffice everyday where the postmaster and the postmen made fun of him". They called him a pest. But a day came, when the postmaster's daughter got ill. He also went through the same pain when he waited for his daughter's letter. He realised Ali's anguish and pain. He regretted for having made fun of Ali. He wished to help Ali. So when finally one day Miriam's letter arrived, the postmaster went with Lakshmi Das, the clerk, to deliver the letter on his grave. Realisation came late to the postmaster but the shoe really pinched him when he himself went through the same pain and suffering which Ali had undergone.

Answer»

“Truth always pays”, were the words that were implanted in Shyam’s mind by his mother. He never ever got to face a dilemma in this philosophical context except once. Once he needed money to throw a party for his friends, but he found that the money that his parents had given him was very less. Little did he know as a child, So he asked for money on loan from an acquaintance. He didn’t realize at that moment that he was to be trapped soon. Day by day, the interest on the money increased and the four hundred rupees increased to ten thousand. He was being threatened daily to pay the money. So he decided to inform his parents. He was scolded by his father and he thought that he had invited trouble for himself. But his parents cleared his debts. He was very upset and thought that he shouldn’t have told them. But one day his mind was changed completely. He heard of a killing in a neighbouring house that took place only because of monetary affairs. He then realised that no matter how much he was scolded, one truth had actually saved his life. He learnt the lesson that truth is always better in the long run.

Answer»

                           Tit for Tat

In a forest, there lived an elephant who was very naughty. He always indulged in mischievous behaviour like throwing water on other animals, threatening to trample the smaller animals, if they did not listen to what he said and so on.

One day, he met a baby giraffe who had lost his way in the forest and was crying. The elephant helped him in finding his mother and they both became good friends. Now the inhabitants of the forest were scared of the two animals–the elephant and the giraffe because the giraffe always accompanied the elephant.

One fine morning, a saint passed through that forest. He loved the peace and calmness of that place and decided to stay there. He was very happy among the chirping of birds in the morning, the pleasant and pure air etc. The giraffe and the elephant also heard about his home and came to that place. They saw that the saint was busy in his prayers with his eyes closed. They broke the branches of the trees under which he was sitting. The saint didn’t pay any attention to them. They started throwing the utensils and clothes from the saints’ hut. Even then he didn’t say anything, this was too much for both the animals. The elephant went to the river and came back with water. Meanwhile, the giraffe broke leaves from the trees. Then they both started disturbing the saint by throwing water and leaves on him. The saint became very annoyed. He opened his eyes and saw both the animals. Then, in a rage, he cursed the elephant to live with a long trunk and the giraffe with a long neck. Both the animals got scared. They begged the saint to take back his curse but he didn’t. Since then, the elephant has had a long trunk and the giraffe – a long neck.
