Given figure represents biomagnification of DDT in an aquatic food chain. Select the incorrect statement regarding this. A. When agricultural fields are sprayed with DDT, it is carried by runoff water into nearby aquatic bodies.B. River water may have a very low concentration of DDT, but the carnivorous fish in that river may contain high concentration of DDT, which is still suitable for consumption by huyman beings.C. Increased concentration of DDT in birds affects calucium metabolism due to which egg shells become thin and break before maturity.D. None of these |
Answer» Correct Answer - B River water will always have a very lowconcentration of DDT, but as we go to higher trophic levels concentration of DDT increases due to biomagnification. So carnivorous fish has high level of DDt and it is not suitable for consumption by human beings, because of presence of DDT. |
|
614. |
Which of the following statements is not correct regarding biomagnification ? (i) Mercury accumulated by an organism cannot be metabolised. (ii) In the process of biomagnification, concentration of DDT is increased at successive trophic levels. (iii) Accumulation of cadmimu can cause thinning of egg shell in birds. (iv) DDT accumulation is a major cause of reduced population of fish eating birds. (v) Biomagnification occurs only in aquatic food chain.A. (i), (iii) and (v)B. (iii) and (iv)C. (iii) and (v)D. (i), (ii) and (iv) |
Answer» Correct Answer - C The higher amounts of pesticide like DDT, disturb calcium metabolism of birds resulting in thinning of egg shells and their premature breaking. This is a major cause of reduction of population of fish eating birds. Biomagnification is found in all types of food chains. |
|
615. |
Biomagnification occurs due to toxic chemical accumulated by an organism. a.Cannot be metabolised b. Can be metabolised c. Cannot be excreted d. Can be excretedA. a and cB. b and dC. a, b and cD. a, b, c and d |
Answer» Correct Answer - A A few non-biodegradable toxic substances often pres ent in industrial waste water can undergo biological magnification or biomngnification in the aquatic food chain. This happens because a toxic substance accumulated by an organism cannot be metabolised or excreted and thus passed to the next higher trophic level. |

Discuss briefly the following: (a) Greenhouse gases (b) Catalytic converter (c) Ultraviolet B . |
Answer» (a) Greenhouse gases: The greenhouse effect refers to an overall increase in the average temperature of the Earth due to the presence of greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases mainly consist of carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapour. When solar radiations reach the Earth, some of these radiations are absorbed. These absorbed radiations are released back into the atmosphere. These radiations are trapped by the greenhouse gases present in the atmosphere.. This helps in keeping our planet warm and thus, helps in human survival. However, an increase in the amount of greenhouse gases can lead to an excessive increase in the Earth’s temperature, thereby causing global warming. (b) Catalytic converter: Catalytic converters are devices fitted in automobiles to reduce vehicular pollution. These devices contain expensive metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium that act as catalysts. As the vehicular discharge passes through the catalytic converter, the unburnt hydrocarbons present in it get converted into carbon dioxide and water. Carbon monoxide and nitric oxide released by catalytic converters are converted into carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas (respectively). (c) Ultraviolet-B: Ultraviolet-B is an electromagnetic radiation which has a shorter wavelength than visible light. It is a harmful radiation that comes from sunlight and penetrates through the ozone hole onto the Earth’s surface. It induces many health hazards in humans. UV −B damages DNA and activates the process of skin ageing. It also causes skin darkening and skin cancer. High levels of UV −B cause corneal cataract in human beings. |
