Answer» Correct Answer - A
50% carbon monoxide emissions are from automobiles. Normally CO has a brief residence in atmosphere and gets oxidised to `CO_(2)`. However, in congested and closed areas it proves quite harmful. Carbon monoxide combines with haemoglobin produces carboxyhaemoglobin of COHb. At 50 ppm, CO converts 7.5 % of haemoglobin into carboxyhaemoglobin with 8 hours. It impairs oxygen transport resulting in giddiness, headache, decreased vision, cardiovascular malfunction and asphxia.

When huge amount of sewage is dumped into a river, its BOD willA. increaseB. decreaseC. sharply decreaseD. remain unchanged

Answer» Correct Answer - A
Degree of impurity of water due to organic matter is measured in terms of BOD (`O_(2)` in milligram required for five days in one litre of `H_(2)O` at `20^(@)C` for micro-organisms to metabolise organic wastes).
In polluted water reoxygenation decreases than deoxygenation. So, in this water BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) increases.

Why does ozone hole form over Antarctica ? How will enhanced ultraviolet radiation affect us ?

Answer» Chlorofluorocarbons, mainly released in the atmosphere by developed countries, slowly enters the stratosphere and the winds move them towards the poles. Environment conditions prevailing in Antarctica during winter months (June to August) are conducive for the formation of ozone hole. In these month, there is no sunlight in Antarctica and extremely low temperature `(-85^(@)C)` facilitates the formation of ice clouds. during winter, natural circulation of wind (polar vortex) completely isolates antartic air from the rest of the world. The ice clouds provide the catalytic surface for the reaction of chlorine atoms and then ozone. But this degradation of ozone occurs with the return of solar radiations to Antarctica during spring (September and October). This results in the thinking of ozone layer every year over most of Antarctica. This hole disappears in summer due to warming up of air and the mixing up of antarctic air with that of the rest of the world
Enhanced UV radiations on earth would a effect humans and other animals by causing.
(i) skin cancer,
(ii) Blidness and increased chances of cateract in eyes, and
(iii) Malfunctioning of immune system.
1844.

Why ozone hole forms over Antarctica? How will enhanced ultraviolet Radiations affect us?

Answer» The ozone hole is more prominent over the region of Antarctica. It is formed due to an increased concentration of chlorine in the atmosphere.
Chlorine is mainly released from chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s) widely used as refrigerants. The CFC’s magnate from the troposphere to the stratosphere, where they release chlorine atoms by the action of UV rays on them. The release of Chlorine atoms causes the conversion of ozone into molecular oxygen. One atom of chlorine can destroy around 10,000 molecules of ozone and causes ozone depletion.
The formation of the ozone hole will result in an increased concentration of UV - B radiations on the Earth’s surface. UV −B damages DNA and activates the process of skin ageing. It also causes skin darkening and skin cancer. High levels of UV −B cause corneal cataract in human beings.
