What were the voices that Paul heard? Did they lead him to success in the real sense? |
Answer» Although the house Paul and his family lived in was a pleasant one, the money they had was not enough to maintain the social position they had to keep up. The mother realised that father had no luck to make enough money so she decided to do something on her own. It was then that the house started whispering from every corner that “there must be more money The sounds started haunting the place and made Paul very uncomfortable and distressed and disturbed him. Though there were expensive gifts coming on Christmas, Paul could hear behind the shining rocking horse that “there must be more money It is plausible that Paul was schizophrenic and imagined the voices on being stressed due to their misery. As it is written in the text that no body said it aloud and there is no mention of anyone else hearing such voices, it is clear that Paul imagined his fears giving them voice. Paul's fear transferred into him through his mother constantly haunted him and became his driving force. The boy was oedipal and unknowingly wished to replace his father from his mother's life. So, the autistic boy drove his shinning horse ferociously until he “got thereand would be sure of the horse that would win the next race. There were times when he was not sure, so he would be careful. The gardener Bassett was his partner throughout. Later even uncle Oscar joined as such was the conviction with which Paul used to declare the winning horse's name, and the horse used to win in actual. Call it clairvoyance or sheer luck, which he aspired to have to prove to be worthy of his mother's luck, Paul made money by betting on horses and fi8nally left 80,000 pounds for his family by losing himself. |

Find the number of words that can be formed by taking all the letters of the word “COMBINE”, such that the vowels occupy odd places. |
Answer» There are 7 letters in the word COMBINE of which 4 are consonants and 3 are vowels (O, I, E). There are 4 odd places in a 7 letter word, so the number of ways 3 vowels can be arranged in 4 places = 4P3 After arranging the 3 vowels, there are 4 places left (one at odd position and 3 at even positions). So the 4 consonants can be arranged in these 4 places in 4! ways. ∴ Required number of words = 4P3 × 4! = 4 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1 = 96. |
| 28. |
Total number of words formed by 2 vowels and 3 consonants taken from 4 vowels and 5 consonants is equal to(A) 60 (B) 120 (C) 7200(D) 720 |
Answer» Answer is (C) Given number of vowels = 4 and number of consonants = 5 We have to form words by 2 vowels and 3 consonants. So, lets first select 2 vowels and 3 consonants. Number of ways of selection = 4C2 x 5C3 = 6 x 10 = 60 Now, these letters can be arranged in 5! ways. So, total number of words = 60 x 5! = 60 x 120 = 7200 |

(a) Explain why, the first period of the modern periodic table has only two elements whereas second period has eight elements(b) Why do elements in the same group show similar properties but the elements in different groups show different properties ?(c) State one reason for keeping fluorine and chlorine in the same group of the periodic table.(d) What are the merits of the modern periodic table of elements ? |
Answer» (a) The 1st period has two elements because the 1st electron shell of an atom c a n take a maximum of two electrons only. The 2nd period of the periodic table has 8 electrons because the maximum no. of electrons which can be put in the 2nd shell of an atom is 8. (b) The elements in the same group show similar properties because they have similar electronic configuration (having the same number of valence electrons) whereas the elements of different groups have different electronic configurations (different number of valence electrons) due to which they show different properties. (c) Fluorine and chlorine have been placed in the same group because both of them have 7 valence electrons. (d) Merits of modern periodic table: (i) The modern periodic table is based on the atomic numbers of elements which is the most fundamental property of elements. (ii) It helps us to understand why elements in a group show similar properties but elements in different groups show different properties. (iii) It explains the reasons for the periodicity in properties of elements. (iv) It tells us why the properties of elements are repeated after 2, 8, 18 and 32 elements. |
