You’ve read the playlet Puru the Brave. You liked it very much. You liked the characters both Alexander and Puru. Write a letter to your friend describing why you liked both of them.

Answer»

Tenali.

24.5.20xx.

Dear Krishna,

I hope this letter finds you in the best of health and spirits. All of us are doing fine here. It has been a very long since we met or wrote to each other. So I thought of penning down a few lines to check things with you. The primary purpose of writing this letter to you is to make you know about two great heroes of history. They are Alexandar and Puru, the great. You must have heard about these two in our lesson-“Puru, the Great.” After reading this lesson I’ve inspired with the great qualities of Alexander and Purushotham. Both are courageous and valient people. Both are noble. Both respected each other’s sovereignty. Alexander was such a noble personality that he respected the bravery, patriotism, and his love for free¬dom and sovereignty. For Puru the only thing that Puru valued very much was the freedom, independence and sovereignty of his kingdom. Nothing is valuable for him more than that. Puru rejected the proposal of Alexander to be as his vassal. He fought bravely like a lion until the end with the means and warfare available to him. In my opinion he was a true hero. What is your opinion about Puru? What do you think about Alexander ? Write a replay to me describing your feelings about these two great personalities. Convey my regards to your parents and my best wishes to you sister.

Yours lovingly,

xxxxxx

Rewrite the playlet “Alexander the Great” as a short story.

Answer»

Alexander was a king of Macedonia. He was the disciple of the greatest Greek philosopher, Aristotle. His aim in his life was to conquer the world. He had defeated so many kings in the middle east the western Asia and reached the North-western India. In the northern India he had to fight with Puru, a great king and a brave soldier. Puru was a noble patriot. He did not like India to be conquered by any foreign ruler. So he decided to fight against Alexander. There was a great battle, between Alexander and Puru on the banks of Jhelum. His soldiers, generals fought bravely. Puru also fought like a tiger. He killed hundreds of Greek soldiers and injured many with his sword. Puru lost the battle though his generals and soldiers fought bravely. Puru lost the battle as he had used the oldest methods of warfare and he used elephants. Puru was gravely injured and chained in the battle. He was brought before Alexander. Alexander liked his bravery and courage. He did not like such a great king to be in captivity., He asked his soldiers to remove his chains. Alexander asked Puru to be his vassal. But Puru refused. Alexander asked him why he rejected his offer.- Puru said that he was the lawful owner of his kingdom. He asked Puru how he should treat him. Puru asked to treat him as his equal. Alexander liked his bravery, gave back his kingdom. Alexander liked Puru’s self-respect, so became his best friend.

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:Research has shown that the human mind can process words at the rate of about 500 per minute, whereas a speaker speaks at the rate of about 150 words a minute. The difference between the two at 350 is quite large. So the speaker must make every effort to retain the attention of the audience and the listener should also be careful not to let his mind wander. Good communication calls for good listening skills.A good speaker must necessarily be a good listener. Listening starts with hearing but goes beyond. Hearing, in other words, is necessary but is not a sufficient condition for listening. Listening involves hearing with attention. Listening is a process that calls for concentration. While listening, one should also be observant. In other words, listening has to do with the ears, as well as with the eyes and the mind. Listening is to be adept at the total process that involves hearing with attention, being observant and making interpretations.Good communication is essentially an interactive process. It calls for participation and involvement. It is quite often a dialogue rather than a monologue. It is necessary to be interested and also show or make it abundantly clear that one is interested in knowing what the other person has to say. Good listening is an art that can be cultivated. It relates to skills that can be developed. A good listener knows the art of getting much more than what the speaker is trying to convey. He knows how to prompt, persuade, but not to cut off or interrupt what the other person has to say.At times the speaker may or may not be coherent, articulate and well organised in his thoughts and expressions. He may have it in his mind and yet he may fail to marshal the right words while communicating his thought. Nevertheless, a good listener puts him at ease, helps him articulate and facilitates him to get across the message that he wants to convey. For listening to be effective, it is also necessary that barriers to listening are removed. Such barriers can be both physical and psychological. Physical barriers generally relate to hindrances to proper hearing whereas psychological barriers are more fundamental and relate to the interpretation and evaluation of the speaker and the message. On the basis of your reading of the above passage, make notes on it using heading and sub-headings.

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:Fasting is said to bring a host of benefits, provided it’s done under medical supervision. Doctors explain how to go about it. Food is to the body what fuel is to a motor vehicle. It provides energy, helps repair and rejuvenation and confers many other benefits. A lot of research has been done and is being done on fasting. When one fasts, the digestive organs get rest and all body mechanisms are cleansed. While fasting, the natural process of toxin execution continues, while the influx of new toxins is reduced. The energy usually used for digestion is redirected to immune function and cell growth. Fasting helps you heal with greater speed, cleanses your liver, kidneys and colon, purifies your blood, helps you lose excess weight and water, flushes out toxins, clears the eyes and tongue and cleanses the breath.Another research says fasting, even occasionally, helps in detoxification. Through fasting, we restrict digestive activity and so energy is utilised to cleanse different systems. Fasting improves metabolism, sharpens the senses, calms the mind, helps lose weight, improves general immunity, improves concentration and mental clarity. Fasting, if understood and done under supervision, has tremendous benefits and impacts one at various planes; mental, emotional, physical and spiritual. Specifically, it serves as an aid to effective detoxification, helps in repair and rejuvenation, offers rest to the gastrointestinal system and promotes mobilisation of excess fat.The crucial point to note is the difference between fasting and starvation. Research suggests there are major health benefits to calorie restriction. Among other things, it slows down the ageing process. According to the US National Academy of Sciences, other benefits include stress resistance, increased insulin sensitivity and increased lifespan. Glucose is the body’s primary fuel source and is essential for the brain’s functioning. When denied glucose for more than 4-8 hours, the body converts glycogen stored in the liver into a usable form of fuel and supplements it with small amounts of protein. This will last for up to 12 hours before the body turns to glycogen stored in muscles. If glucose is still denied at this point, the body continues to use fat for as long as it is available. If the fast is not broken, starvation occurs, as the body begins to use protein for fuel. Death can occur if fasting is pursued to the point of complete starvation.Write a summary of the passage and suggest a suitable title.

Answer»

Summary
Fasting has various benefits if it is done under medical supervision. According to research, it. detoxifies the body, cleanses different systems, improves metabolism and general immunity and: provides benefits at the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual planes. It is wrong to mistake: fasting for starvation. If starvation continues, the body consumes glucose from the liver, muscles and the protein content of the body and ultimately death can occur.
