पौधे का वह हिस्सा जो भूमि के अंदर छिपा हुआ होता है, जड़ या मूल कहलाता है। जड़ें मिट्टी के कणों को परस्पर बांधे रखती हैं और पौधे को भूमि पर स्थिर रखती हैं । ये पौधे के पोषण के लिए जरूरी खनिज-लवणों को भूमि से अवशोषित करके तनों के माध्यम से पहुंचाती हैं।

जड़तंत्र 

हम देखते हैं कि पौधों की जड़ सिर्फ एक नहीं होती। या तो यह मुख्य जड़ और सहायक छोटी-छोटी जड़ों में बंटी होती है। या फिर एक पौधे से बहुत सी मुख्य जड़े होती है। इन्हीं को सामूहिक रूप से जड़तंत्र कहा जाता है।  

जड़तंत्र दो प्रकार के होते हैं-

 -मूसलाधार जड़तंत्र 

-रेशेदार जड़तंत्र  

मूसलाधार जड़तंत्र की विशेषता 

इसमें पौधे के आधार से एक मोटी मुख्य जड़ निकलती हैं। इस मुख्य जड़ से कई छोटी छोटी जड़ें निकलती हैं। फिर इन छोटी-छोटी जड़ों से महीन-महीन ढेरों जड़े निकलती हैं। इस प्रकार की संरचना को मूसलाधार जड़ कहते हैं। उदाहरण के लिए मुली, गाजर, आम, नीम आदि। 

 रेशेदार जड़तंत्र की विशेषता 

जब पौधे के आधार से या किसी अन्य हिस्से से एक साथ एक जैसे आकार वाली जड़ें निकलती हैं। तो इन्हें रेशेदार जड़तंत्र कहते हैं। जैसे गेहूं, चावल, मक्का, घास आदि की जड़ें रेशेदार होती हैं।

a. Calcination

Calcination is the process of heating the concentrated ore at a temperature below its melting point to remove the volatile impurities. When subjected to calcination, impurities like water, organic matter, and other volatile impurities are expelled from the ore. Metal Carbonate and hydroxides decompose to form oxides, 

eg: ZnCO is converted to ZnO by calcination

Roasting:

Roasting is the process of heating the concentrated ore at a temperature below its melting point in a current of air. During roasting the ore gets converted into its oxide. When the concentrated ore is subjected to roasting, the water present in it is removed as vapor. Other impurities like sulfur, phosphorus and organic matter are oxidized and expelled. The sulfide combines with oxygen to form oxide 

eg: Cu2S ore is converted to Cu2O by roasting;

Water pollution occurs when harmful substances—often chemicals or microorganisms—contaminate a stream, river, lake, ocean, aquifer, or other body of water, degrading water quality and rendering it toxic to humans or the environment.

Sources of Water Pollution Some of the most commonly occurring water pollutants are

  • Detergents and Fertilizers

Effects of Pollution of Water 

  • Diseases: In humans, drinking or consuming polluted water in any way has many disastrous effects on our health. It causes typhoid, cholera, hepatitis and various other diseases. 
  • Destruction of Ecosystems: Ecosystems are extremely dynamic and respond to even small changes in the environment. Water pollution can cause an entire ecosystem to collapse if left unchecked. 
  • Eutrophication: Chemicals in a water body, encourage the growth of algae. These algae form a layer on top of the pond or lake. Bacteria feed on this algae and this decreases the amount of oxygen in the water body, severely affecting the aquatic life there. 
  • Effects the food chain: Disruption in food chains happens when toxins and pollutants in the water are consumed by aquatic animals (fish, shellfish etc) which are then consumed by humans.

Prevention 

The best way to prevent large-scale water pollution is to try and reduce its harmful effects. There are various small changes we can make to protect ourselves from a scary future where water is scarce.
