Why is it wrong to make a difference among friends who belong to a different class, colour or community? |
Answer» We are friendly with those who are good at soul and mind. When our behaviour and mind match with each other, we become friends. I personally feel that friendship is not built on the basis of caste, colour or community. It develops on the basis of how we understand one another. |

If by Anon About the Author: |
Answer» The Anonymous poet (Anon) died many years ago, a shame because he or she wrote many good poems. A come back is long overdue. Books of quotations “Who was Anon?” are cluttered with sayings attributed to Anon and these scraps of truth and wisdom have earned Anon universal recognition and immortality. Innumerable biographies have been written about lesser authors, even authors so obscure that their works are seldom read. But Anon, though widely read and widely quoted has been accorded only widespread indifference by the literary community. So complete scholarly neglect of Anon that his name has become a synonym for ‘unknown’. In spite of this, his works have stood the test of time, and he continues to be one of the most ofter quoted authors. So, a picture of Anon emerges, a witty, slightly cynical, philosopher of the people. He could sum up the essence of an idea in one party sentence. Though many others plagarized his works, he never complained. He must have cared little for money, for there is no record that he was ever paid for any of his work. |

If Summary In English. |
Answer» The Poem ‘If is written by an anonymous poet (unknown poet). The words ‘ If is described the dictionary as ‘On the Condition or in the event that every time that and whenever’. If is a conjunction. It connects the subject and objects of a sentence. Similarly the poet has used the word ‘If in the poem to emphasize that every Living being in this world is connected with one another. So in order to live harmoniously is the world it is very important to connect with each other in a good and ethical thoughts and deeds. Our lifetime on this earth is very limited we have to use our God-given gift of life to make this world a better place. How can we make this world a better place? That is what the poet seems to be telling us in the lines of the poem ‘If. “Giving” is important in life To give someone something we must ourself es be kind, strong and charitable. We should not hesitate to give anything to our fellow beings. So the poet is earnestly urging us that the right time to do anything is at the very moment the thought occurs. So he tells us that if we have a kind word to say then we have to say it at the very moment that is ‘now’. If we have something to give, then ‘now’ is the best time to give. And if we can make someone glad or less sad, the poet is urging as to ‘do it now’ at the very moment. Similarly if there’s’ is good news to give, we should not waste our time to tell it to others and we should immediately (now) tell it to others. ‘If we have the opportunity to cultivate a friendship with others, then we should not lose time but immediately ‘rase’ to the occasion and offer our friendship and trustworthiness. It requires one to have courage (daring-ness) to sacrifice anything he has to others. So the poet says that if we have the courage to give or to ease somebody’s pain or to please others, so that we can make them happy, we should do it immediately (now). At the end of the poem, the poet repeats what he has said in the poem to emphasize his idea. He pleads with us to be hasty in doing good deeds. He warns us to do good deeds and help the others in need before it is too late. Out life on the earth is too short we should not regret that we were unkind, uncharitable or selfish at the end of our life. One need not wait for tomorrow or for another time to do good deeds for it maybe just a little too late. So the poet urges us to do good deeds imme¬diately that is now, now, now. |

What feelings does the poem awaken in you ? How do your feelings connect with those of the poet ? |
Answer» The poem ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling inspires one to inculcate in one’s character the qualities recommended by the poet. Self-control, self confidence, patience, tolerance and courage are all required to tackle the difficult circumstances of life. Truthfulness, being practical in deeds and making the best use of time are essential to achieve success in life. But all these appear to be too indealistic in their totality to be acquired by ordinary persons. Nevertheless, the poet is right in emphasising that they are essential for achievements in life, and above all, making a human being a man in the real sense of the term. |

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much, If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds, worth of distance run. Yours is the Earth and everything that is in it, And-which is more-you’ll be a man, my son ! |
Answer» Explanation : In this concluding stanza the poet advises the young men that they should not lose their virtues in the company of common people. They should not be proud in the company of great people. Their behaviour should be so noble that their friends as well as their enemies should love them. They should use every minute of their time in useful pieces of work. They should always remember that time once lost never returns. Draft a speech to be given during the farewell for Standard X on the topic Changes, I would like in the School Education of our State. Greeting and salutation Self introduction and introduction of the topic A catchy thought/episode/news etc. to start with 2 to 3 changes that you suggest with their reason Conclusion Thank you/greeting |
Answer» “Changes, I would like in School Education of our State ” Honourable Chairperson, respected Headmaster and teachers. I, Nikita Desai from Std. X-A wishing you a very pleasant morning. I am here to express my views on behalf of all my classmates and to bid farewell to our school, teachers and all of you. After spending almost 10-12 years in this school, we are now capable to keep our steps out in a very different world. And I am sure being the students of this school; we would never fall short anywhere and in any field. I know the Chief Guest of today’s programme is the Education Minister of our state. So I take this opportunity to suggest some changes in the school education of our state. The first and very important thing I would recommend is about the option. There should be internal option to each and every subject. The child should be free to opt whatever he or she likes. Teaching and learning process should not be monotonous. It should be interesting. Every child should take part in this process. Teacher should not be an authoritarian. One more thing, I would suggest about the examination. Examination should not be mandatory. Even upgradation of a child should be based on his / her internal performance. Written examination should not be given the whole credit. There should not be a burden of homework. It should be done at school. I know, it is quite difficult to implement everything all of a sudden. But if you go step-by-step, it is quite a feasible suggestion. I know education in Maharashtra is better than other states. But if we make these changes, teaching and learning will be more enjoyable. I hope you will try to understand the views of every child. Wishing my friends all the best for their examination and for their bright future life. Thank you for listening to me carefully and attentively. Jai Hind. |

Why does the poet say that triumph and disaster are two imposters? |
Answer» In the poem, the poet refers to triumph and disaster as imposters because they tend to present only one aspect of life. Life is made up of pain and pleasure but when pain comes, people forget that there is pleasure too. The same is true of pleasure. |

Do you think the virtues preached by the poet are achievable? |
Answer» The poet preaches the virtues of patience, tolerance, truthfulness and love in the poem ‘If’. Though he invokes the youth to inculcate them in their character yet the poem has a universal appeal and applies to all human beings. The poet says that together with these qualities, virtues like equanimity in pain and pleasure, perseverence, humility and hard work may help all to achieve perfection in life and make them men in true sense. But all these are ideals and, if not impossible, are difficult to achieve for ordinary persons. Only the very strong-willed persons gifted with extra-ordinary powers may achieve them.

According to the poet, why is it not good to make dreams your master’? |
Answer» According to the poet, it is not good to make ‘dreams our master’. Instead of this, we should make efforts to turn our dreams into reality. We can never achieve success just by dreaming. So we should make our sincere efforts to achieve success, otherwise we will lose everything and will get only disappointment. |

They should have self-confidence and strong will power to achieve their aim. |

The poem concludes with “You will.be a Man”. What kind of a man is implied here? |
Answer» The poem, “If” concludes with ‘You will be a Man’. The poet implies a kind of a man who is endowed with certain qualities which are not found in ordinary human beings. Self control, self-confidence, patience, truthfulness and love for all are the qualities which when exercised in trying circumstances characterise only the man who is above the ordinary. Similarly equanimity, tolerance, courage in the face of difficulty, remaining active till death, treating all alike and making the fullest use of time are the qualities not usually found in ordinary persons. A man who possesses these qualities in totality is a Man in real sense. |

Why does the poet say “Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it” ? |
Answer» The poet motivates his readers to make the best use of their time. We should keep an account of every second of our life. If we make the fullest and the best use of our time, our success is sure. Therefore the poet says, “Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it”. It means no one can check you from becoming a successful person. |

“Keep your head” why would this be important ? What does Kipling mean “to trust yourself when others doubt you’?“मानसिक संतुलन को बनाये रखना” यह महत्त्वपूर्ण क्यों होगा? |
Answer» It would be important to “keep our head” (be sensible) because when other people may lose their peace of mind, we should be sensible, otherwise the problem will become more serious. By “to trust yourself when others doubt you” the poet means that when others doubt us, we should not lose our self-confidence. We should trust ourselves without caring for others. |
