Solve : Ethernet connection 'unidentified network' with no net connectivity?

Answer»

Hey, ive recently tried to set up a wired connection on my PC but am not getting anywhere on my own (few hours of looking for solutions) so its probably time to get some help.

Im running windows 7. Wireless has always worked fine till i snapped the receiver in half. My laptop's wireless works fine, as does a wired connection using the same cable.

Troubleshoot gives me 'local AREA connection doesn't have a valid ip configuration'. ipconfig /renew times out with 'Cannot renew Ip address and Unable to contact your DHCP server'.

ipconfig shows:

Did you DAMAGE your desktop wireless card?
For a direct Ethernet connection, you may have to do the Network Wizard over again.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/setting-home-network#1TC=windows-7

You will have to do this for the Ethernet connection.

If done of this helps, pleases come back and tell what happens.
Do the IPConfig again.

It was a wireless usb, but i really should be using a more direct connection anyways, so the wireless isnt really the issue.

When i run 'Set up a new connection or network' then 'set up a new network' nothing APPEARS in the box after waiting 90 seconds+How are you connected on your network by wired? By a wireless router connected by a modem or by a direct modem? Did you try reinstalling your Ethernet driver? Its directly connected to the modem. I have re-installed the drivers now, which did not fix the problem. You may need to reset TCP/IP try following this guide and let us know how it works.

Solve : Linksys wireless n network usb question.?

Answer»

I'm thinking of buying it for my computer to get a wifi access point to be able to use my nintendo 3ds online. Now the router that is in the living room is wired and not wireless. The QUESTION is can i get wireless in my room with just buying the network usb adapter for my computer and using the virtual router software online that works LIKE you have a wireless router but virtual. Or would that still not work.If you refer to a desktop wired and using a USB wireless adapter to share or create a hotspot, try the free version of Connectify http://www.connectify.me/ My only EXPERIENCE with Connectify is my laptop is directly wired and then the built-in wifi adapter is broadcasting the created PASSWORD protected SSID to share wireless in range.

Solve : wifi ipod/home pc/ipad trouble?

Answer»

Hi I have ipod/ipad/samsung galaxy phone and windows 7 pc, I have wifi on all these devices but hve trouble using Facebook and all of the divices. Both of the phones can connect when using the 3 or 4g network with wifi disabled but will randomly log into facebook. My computer is similar it logged on this morning but then when i clicked a link WITHIN facebook the page it says unable to load page. My daughter ipod 5 does the same but also youtube wont open either. I am pretty sure it is a wifi issue but DIDNT want to buy a new router for no reason. Any help much appreiciated.

JonaMost likely your equipment is good.
Who is the provider for you internet service? (ISP)
Recently some providers have had bad service for unspecified reasons.
It varies by region.
SOMETIMES the 3G and 4G serve is better, even in the same area.
The best I can offer is that you contact the ISP you are using.
I have had Internet services for four different providers over the past 13 years at this location.  This last year I have had more problems than EVER. The prov ider does  NOT inanimate with me  what the issue is.
There has been much speculation, but no clear answers. But there is a lot of anecdotal stories to support the idea that the ISP companies have a problem.
Here is one of many:
http://www.extremetech.com/computing/177073-why-netflix-streaming-is-getting-slower-and-probably-wont-get-better-any-time-soon
Quote

...Netflix and Comcast have come to an agreement. Netflix now has a direct CONNECTION to Comcast’s network (peering), and Comcast users should see much improved service as a result. Money changed hands, but no exact figures were made public.
That implies that Comcast might have made Netflix service less reliable .
Of course, that may not be  your problem. But it shows that many think the problems are with the policy adopted by the ISP, not the PC or OS.
The best I can offer is you keep talking with your ISP.

Solve : networking win 7 don't understand ??

Answer»

I have win 7 on desktop and laptop my computers are "joined" I can see my desktop on my laptop but I can't "see" my files on my laptop from the desktop, In the advanced sharing options I see that my network discovery is turned off, ok, now when I turn it back on and click save changes ... it doesn't " save" and so I am thinking some services are turned off what services are needed to "see" my files on my desktop, and I do have password protected on, anyway I really would like some HELP on this thanks in advance ps what is the "user name" when I have the promp for that I am thinking it is somthink like "me-pc or somthing like that or is it \\me-pc" the user name has me stumpted I can't find what it supposed to be and the network password I have.Windows networking is, at its best, frustrating.
For a HOME user, the best trick is to just start over.
Do the whole network wizard thing again on both computers. Don't forget that you have to restart both machines and wait a bit for them to find each over.
Also, you have to have at least one folder on each computer with sharing on.
Do not try to share an entire drive.
Instead, something like My Pictures is a good choice.

I did what you said and it worked but after a couple of days later it stopped working? so I am at a loss as what to do next, I would like to know what is the "user name" I am supposed to enter? I am confused about that Here is one way  to simply things.
Have at least two user accounts on each computer with administrator level
On PC-1 the two users could be:
  race
  sand
They can  have  the same password.

On PC-2 the two users could be:
  race
  sand
They can  have  the same password.

Make sure both users are active, that is, that have been  used at least once.
Sign on to one PC as sand...
sign n the other as race...
The first time you get into the network you need user name and password.
After that it becomes e automatic.

Please tell what happens next.
It should work.

I would also like to add that its best to give the 2 computers static IP addresses as for I have seen issues with Windows getting messed up when dynamic IP address changes etc, especially with mapped drives between systems.

Once I changed from system name\share mappings to static_IP\share mappings such as below:

\\system_name\share$

to

\\Static_IP\share$

The problems I had went away after setting up Static IP's and Static Mapped Drives. I was really scratching my head as to why this was a problem when they were both on the same version of Windows 7 Home Premium, same workgroup, router, and the security settings were configured so that the firewall allowed for both systems to access each other but no others to connect to them.

I was having same issue where it would work for a while and then a few days later wouldnt work. Going Static Fixed This!!!!

I have since changed my setup to not conflict for bandwidth with other devices in my home using the network. I installed second NICs in these 2 systems and put a cross over cable between them, since after all, i am using Static IP addresses. So now I can transfer large files between 2 systems such as a 18GB video game from one system to another without affecting everyone else that is watching netflix etc. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 29, 2014, 03:09:55 PM

How could that possibly simplify things?  Seems like it complicates things to me.I think I have it fixed now (I Hope) I did have some services disabled that kept me from having network discovery on, I have since renabled them and so far so good, thanks for help!, I am trying to learn this networking thing, it is a challange to say the least.  I if I have any more issues I will be back so I won't close this now Use of names HELPS.
You can locate another computer my its name  by user name.
Once you do that, Windows 'remembers' who is on the network.

Why would you turn off any default services?
I turned off certain services I didn't need at the time for performance for example I wasn't using networking so I turned off services connected to that, I didn't turn them "off" I set them to manual startup, I had a pc world article about it that used. I GUESS the user name thing is a mystery to me because the prompt keeps coming up that asks for user name and password and it doesn't work so I think I enter wrong user name for example I use sam-pc for user name is that what I put in the user name? or is it \\sam-pc? anyway I restarted my pc today and still am having problems seeing other computer I keep getting the password prompt even though my computer shows in the homegroup list,
You cam do a search for other computers on the network. By name of user or name of PC.
BTW: You misunderstand that you must manually turn on sharing on specific folders. Right?

This differs from what you do on Windows XP, but it does about the same thing.

Solve : TP Link - help/advice needed?

Answer»

We have just GOT Virgin Media broadband at our house, and all is ok. But at the moment our computers are connected VIA ethernet CABLE, so we have a few cables here and there. The router is located on ground floor.

The Virgin Media engineer said put in a 'TP Link' and then we will have no NEED for the cables. I know nothing at all about TP Links. So can anyone help, eg suggest what PRODUCT to buy. We live in a standard 2 storey house and computers/laptop/macbook are mainly used upstairs.

Also, one PC (win7) does not have a built in wireless - can anyone suggest a good wireless device.

many thanks

Hi everyone

I tried visiting to some webs using all the browsers on all my devices but it wont access.  I can still use my internet for almost EVERYTHING else. The webs that I cant access is gradually increasing.
Hope someone could help. Thanks alot!  Quote from: kapkap on March 18, 2014, 03:42:08 PM

Hi everyone
.... using all the browsers on all my devices but it wont access.  I can still use my internet for almost everything else.....
This is due mostly to just two things:
1. The websites are overloaded with tragic and can not respond.
2. The web sites on on a 'blacklist' that your local authority does not allow.

Example: Some contrives band any web site that ever has pornographic material
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/porn-sites-banned-in-India

Thanks for your answer but I think this is not the case. Some of them may be overloaded but some of them are not I know for sure. Besides many of the webs im trying to access are educational sites, none CONTENTS any doggy materials. What's funny is those crappy stuff sites are accessible for me though.Check and see if others have the same problems.

Also, here is what has happened to me.
I got blocked!
I failed to log into a web that requires a password.
After 3 times, it locked me out forever.

To get around the block, use a proxy.
Here is a list.

And as a proxy can be used for evading INTENTIONAL blocks on websites, it is not allowed to be discussed here.  If it is not clear why they are being blocked then that is all the more reason not to advise proxies. I tried my hubby's pc to access those sites n it worked for his pc. His pc use enthernet line and all my devices use wifi. Is there sth wrong with my wifi? Havent change any setyings lately and also restart the moderm also didnt help.Using another computer on another service will confirm that there is some kind of block. As has been mentioned,  we are not too tell people how to undo the block.

The block may be near or far away. Wed don't kn ow why you are blocked.
Besides, if I knew and I told you, I would have to kill you.

You all know that is a joke - Right?

Solve : Website works at work, not home?

Answer»

I hope this is the right section to ask this question in. I'm a big newbie.
I'm having an issue that I have no clue how to solve. There is a specific WEBPAGE that I try to view at HOME with my laptop, and it never loads on Chrome and Firefox, but does on Explorer. But when I take the same laptop to work or school, it does load that website on all browsers. I also have a DESKTOP that stays home, and has the same problem. Its so strange. I don't know if it's a network thing, or an facebook app thing.

I've tried re-installing Chrome, deleting all cookies and caches, disabling all extensions or plugins, and updating Flash and Java. Any ideas?

The page is an app on facebook. It is www.facebook.com/indieskytribe. Go there, then click on the app that says, "Play Music". The apps is made by Bandpage. It's just weird that it works at school and work, just not home.Who is your ISP and what type of ISP Service Plan do you have?We just got Google Fiber the day or two before this started happening. I don't know what an ISP Service Plan is, but I'll research it and get back to you ASAP. Quote

We just got Google Fiber the day or two before this started happening.

Sounds like the ISP may be blocking it or they have some sort of issue between them and their backbone to the internet. Some ISPs have been playing games with data types behind the scenes to throttle stuff down and block some stuff.Thank you. I've contacted them twice, but they don't seem to know what they're doing. What should I say to them? Should I say, "Can we see if the ISP is blocking one of my webpages?"Please let the forum know more about your ISP. Especially your region. Are yhou  in Europe? ASIA?  Canada?

In some regions, like the UK, a few  music sites are banned by some of the the local Internet Service Providers.  Would that apply to you?

Solve : Internet Speed vs Bandwith?

Answer»

I'm WORKING at a school where we just got 30 iPads. We current have Comcast Bussiness Internet basic service which is about 16mb/sec. When they tried to access the WiFi after 5 iPads logged on, it was painfully slow. Of course there are other computers throughout the school who could have been accessing the network at the same time. The next step up is 27mb/sec.
My question is dont I need a wider bandwidth ? Or will a increase in speed automatically increase the bandwidth ?

Any help or suggestions will be greatly APPRECIATED. Not all devices are receiving data at the same instant of time.  A wireless should handle 5 units with no problem.
However, with other computers working in other places, and all are using the one service, the effective bandwidth will be the Comcast bandwidth dived by the number of units actually doing  separate steams. That could be rather meager.

Or PUT another way, not fast enough for video feeds to each student.
IMO, just adding more bandwidth is the the optimum solution. A Telecommunication expert needs to analyze what your real needs are.

Somebody needs to explain to the administrators what video streaming is and is not. Streaming video to 30 discrete users is not the same as broadcasting to a wide audience.

The schools needs can be better served by a mix of broadcasting and  discrete internet searching and smearing I believe this document will clarify some things.

Solve : Wifi signal?

Answer»

I get about 2 bar from public WIFI at my house. I can connect and can"t use the internet. If i use the public wifi near the area i can access it. So i plan to buy wifi extender but i don"t know if it will help in my situation with 2 bar. I wonder if it will increase the signal many bar and can reach how far. Any suggestion ? The way to EXTEND your range is with a passive device.
You can either make a high gain antenna or buy one. It needs to be in a place whkere there are few or no obstacles. This s pseudo lino-of-sight thing.
Active devices, poser devices,  are a poor solution. They do not add power to the other end.
Here is a Google:
High Gain for Wi FI
Ignore the  OMNI  6 DB antenna on Google
You need 12 db or better for best results.
(Let me know if the link does not work.)
I'd also LIKE to point out here that using public WiFi for anything other than very basic surfing is an extremely bad idea - Unless the access point requires you to enter a WPA passphrase when connecting (Not talking about the login page that may appear in your BROWSER), the wireless traffic will not be encrypted meaning that any information you submit to non-https sites (like this one) is sent completely unencrypted and available to attackers.  For example, if you log into this website I could fairly easily sniff the username and password you used.Yes, i am working at spare part com and i ask the shop in thefront that sell it and they say that it"s not very helpful too in this situation, it only can be used for 2-5 floor low wifi signal to make the extender work better. Actually it"s not free wifi , but they give me free hotspot when i subscribe the internet from them , and i can use that when i am in their network coverage.

Solve : shared internet problem :/?

Answer»

heyy guys ,
i have a problem with my shared network.

the pc i use is wireless and have another pc ACROSS the room that shares internet through my ethernet i manage to configure the enthernets to have a static ip this worked for a while now last NIGHT the computer that shares the internet is saying no network CONNECTION and cannot connect to the internet, I have reset both the IPV4 setting on both the pcs (ipv4 for ethernet)
and still now internet  im pritty stumped when it comes to networks many thanks gusy  Do both computers not have internet access? Is this wireless that your connecting to your own or are you using someone elses unprotected wifi, and of which you are splitting the wifi to 2 systems to where they may have locked you out of the wifi?

If its just the computer that is connected to the other that is acting as a gateway, then what changed at the gateway computer or this other computer to break this? Any firewall changes, security software installations etc?

The last time I set up a pair of systems like this it was to share a 56k dial-up connection between 2 systems. You configure the one system to act as the gateway and the other to connect to the gateway. I used a cross over cable between the 2 systems to not have to use a switch or hub, and the IP info was set up that the gateway IP on the system connected to the system acting as the gateway was the IP of the gateway computer.the computer im usi9ng now is connecting to my wifi network, and the othere pc was sharing my internet using windows ICS over an ethernet cable i dont think its a crossover cable, nothing has change on my system secrity software wise
and the static ips ive set  on both the computers have remained the same
well thats messed up just booted up the second pc and every thing seems to be working fine and is sharing my internet now   so thanks  DaveLembke for the response, i still dont know what was causing it or if will happen again but  ive learnt not to question why it works just question why it dont Good to hear its working again... I would assume that you may have an intermittent connection issue if the systems were rebooted both multiple times with no link. If this happens again, I would swap out the Cat5 cable.

Kind of curious though as to how you are making this work without a cross over cable if these systems are both not connected to a network switch or hub to perform the cross over connectivity. I have yet to see the ability to connect two systems together with just a regular patch cable as for the problem is that the TX and RX are mismatched using a regular patch cable and I am not aware of any network adapters that have internal switching to bring PC1-TX to PC2-RX and PC2-TX to PC1-RX to allow for network communications.

Cross Over Cable ALLOWS the following communications without a switch or hub as wired:

TX = Transmit
RX = Receive

PC1     PC2
TX  --> RX
RX <--  TX
*Note: Both Talk and Listen to each other = GOOD

Here is the problem with 2 computers just using a straight-thru patch cable without a cross over ability:

TX = Transmit
RX = Receive

PC1          PC2
TX -->X<-- TX  = Both Talking
RX ---------  RX  = Nothing Heard
*Note: Both are Talking but none are able to Listen to what is communicated. BAD = No Network Connection

These days switches are used with auto-cross over ability and so you have lots of patch cables and few cross overs used.

PC1      SWITCH      PC2
TX  -->    INPUT    <-- TX
RX <--   OUTPUT   --> RX
*Note: Both PC1 and PC2 are using regular straight thru patch cables and the switch is performing the communications cross over. Also the switch allows for as many systems/devices ( aka nodes ) connected to it as ports are availble. So a 8 -port switch supports 8 nodes to interconnect.i managed to do this by assigning static ip to both the computers but  ive just simply got a wireless card for the second pc seeing as ive moved mine into another room

Solve : Cannot connect to the internet unless wireless connection is named "network 2"?

Answer»

I'm running Windows 8 Ultimate 64bit. My internet dropped at around 6:30pm GMT today, and has been down ever since. I normally use a WIRED connection, but I also own a USB wireless adapter. Trying this adapter also didn't work, and the wireless connection to my phone couldn't get internet access either.

While I was unplugging and replugging the ethernet and adapter, I noticed that the WiFi network name changed to "(network name) 2" instead of just "(network name)". I cannot THINK what triggered this as both the ethernet and wireless dongle had been plugged in at the same time several times before, and were both listed as "(network name)".

I tried to connect to the internet, and it worked via the wireless connection, although the ethernet needed to be disabled. Enabling the ethernet stops internet access, and re-disabling it doesn't always CAUSE the internet to come back via the wireless connection. I've tried several times to cause this switch to "(network name) 2", but it SEEMS sporadic.

I've tried deleting the regedit memory of previous connections, and this doesn't seem to have an effect. Ipconfig /all shows that both the ethernet and wireless connections have IvP addresses and MAC addresses, EVEN if I have no internet access.

If anyone has any idea as to why this switch allows internet access to my computer, what causes the switch, and if there is any way to get connectivity back through my ethernet cable (if these are related issues), I'd be very grateful.

Solve : None of my internet browsers are loading past the home page in windows 7??

Answer» LOADING circle keeps spinning and I have internet connection. FIRE fox comes to the HOME screen with the logo, but internet explorer goes to a blank page with address bar. I can't navigate to any website in any browser. I've ran avast boot time scan, malwarebytes and cccleaner and tdss killer. I've done a clean boot of the system. I've done system restore. I ran sfc scannow, which some problems that were detected it couldn't fix. I've ran disk clean up, which worked for a couple minutes, than the internet stopped running. I've done safe mode with networking and gone into network and sharing center and changed the preferred dns because someone on yahoo ANSWERS suggested that, but still nothing. What can I do now? I have a gateway e5700, intel Pentium processor, which I've had for several years. The internet and computer were working perfectly 2 days ago. Sometimes, windows explorer times out, and at first I couldn't even open network and sharing center, but clean boot seems to fix explorer problems, but not the internet. I've done the clean boot in msconfig. What do I do now? I'm familiar with computers, mediocre knowledge, but I'm no expert. And, I forgot to tell you, that I used to have this broadband network LISTED in network and sharing center, but that icon is not there any more. I just have LAN network. It says I have  internet access on the computer. I've cleaned my cache and resetted each browser and routers too. This has been going on for a couple of days.

I have AT&T Uverse (their fastest package) and I have a desktop computer that is hardwired to the router and three laptops THROUGHOUT the house that are connected by wifi (as well as two ipods, one PS4 and one PS3 which are only connected when they're on).  Aside from the fact that the wifi signal was sometimes weaker on the second floor (farthest from the router), there have not been any problems since it was installed last September.  This past Friday the internet cut out completely for a few minutes, when I went to check the router and all the lights were blinking as though it was resetting.  Since then the laptops have been periodically disconnecting (I would have to manually select and reconnect), but I never lose the internet on the hardwired desktop.  If it was HAPPENING with one laptop only, I would assume it was a problem with that specific machine, but it happens with all three.  The only recent CHANGE has been the PS4, I got it and set it up in the early afternoon on Friday, and it was later that evening that the internet cut out, but that's just a coincidence, right?  Besides, this problem happens even with the PS4 off.  Any suggestions?AT&T is aware of issues with their services. You have to call their 800 number and speak to a technician. Specifically, they had known issues and ways to fix the problem without sending out new EQUIPMENT. Unless really  necessary.
Here in this part of the world you call 1-800-288-2020 and use the touchstone to direct your call.

The only recent change has been the PS4
Yes, that can make the difference. Talk to the technician.

And yes, I did read you post and the PS4 can make a difference even when it is off. The addition of another device logs another entry in a table the router has. The entry is still there when the device is off. Talk to the technician.Talked to AT&T (which always feels like you're talking to someone reading from script while they do their best not to pay attention to anything you're saying) and after being on the phone for almost 40 minutes, she said, 'OK, so we're going to go ahead and send you a new router because the hardline signal is OK, but it seems to be dropping the wifi, is that what you said?'  So in other words, she couldn't figure out the problem and is just sending me a new MODEM since I complained that my laptops are losing their wifi connection.  Hope that fixes the problem, but I have my doubts...Yeah, it is sometimes like that.  You have to work with them and they will come around and help you. the old saying is:
The squeaky wheel gets the grease..

First of all, I am trying to LEARN more about computers, I am not that computer savvy so... I am not having any problems with my Wireless Connection, but whenever I try to connect through cable my home network keeps resseting everytime I start my computer and then I am having problems with my broadband connection because it sometimes does not recognize my username and password. I have a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.

I do not know what other information I can provide, but I will gladly try to answer more if necessary. Thank you in advance !How long have you had this problem?
Who is your local service provider?
Is you service a over a telephone line using DSL?
Have you contacted your local provider?

Myself, I have found most of the problems to be with the provider, and not my equipment and software. For example, a new DSL connection has to be prepared if the phone lines are very old and poorly maintained. They don't LIKE to do this kind of work. It can take days for a field tech to find a bad splice in the telephone wires.

As for wireless, a number of things nan reset a wireless connection. Including a combo DSL wireless router that WANTS to reset a lot. A bad power supply can do that.

Could also be a faulty router, network card or cable or just need a factory reset, firmware update or as already mentioned by Geek9pm.

Thank you guys for your ASSISTANCE! It only happens when I go to my neighbour and attempt to connect VIA cable. Although sometimes it works, most of the times I just get the user/pass not recognized, and if I get it to work, it just creates new networks everytime I start my laptop.

Well, I guess I will stick to my wireless then

Thank you all !

Solve : Using mobile 3G USB Modem and want to network - tell me how??

Answer»

Hi I have recently purchased a Laptop with Win 8 on it, and my ISP Dodo sent me a new usb modum to run with this.  I still have a desktop running XP, and to use the internet on that - I have to swap my sim card from new mobile usb to the old one.  I would really like to have both machines run of one modum, is there a way of doing this?First thing you'll have to do is speak to your ISP - Most providers that I have seen do not allow doing this. There are a few ways of doing this.  First of all is to setup internet connection sharing so that the laptop connects to the internet via the USB modem then SHARES the connection with the desktop.  Another way, if the desktop has wifi abilities, is to install SOFTWARE like http://www.connectify.me/hotspot/ which would allow the desktop to connect to the laptop via wifi.  Another way would be to find a compatible broadband router that would accept the USB modem you have and create a hotspot (and allow wired connections as well) that both the laptop and desktop could connect to.  Here's one example: http://cradlepoint.com/products/small-business-home-office-routers/mbr95-wireless-4g-3g-router.  You would need to determine if it is compatible with your particular modem.

I used a similar setup a few years AGO in order to provide internet to my house.  Had a USB modem plugged into a Cradlepoint router and had multiple computers connected via ethernet as well as additional computers connected via wifi.  It worked but multiple computers sharing a single 3G connection meant perfromance wasn't the best.  You should be OK with just 2, especially if you only use one of them at a time.Just a note.
A cell phone provider has a 3G or 4G network. It is not the same as Wi-Fi.
May mobile devices can be used as a "hotspot"  when using the 3G data network. For help with this, you contact your cell service provider, not the ISP. Unless the ISP is also a 3G provider.
It is not the same today as it used to be.

Solve : disabling push button config method pop ups (protected wifi)?

Answer» https://www.dropbox.com/s/3sx0nue9sgvd4w2/wifi.png

I seem to be getting this option pop up on my laptop frequenty since I reformatted. I tried changing my wifi setup from WPA/WPA2-PSK (MIXED Mode) to just WPA2-PSK (AES) but it still persits. I have other PC's using this router however none of them ENCOUNTER this error. (I dont want to use WEP)

It's anonying because during this time that it loads it cuts off my connection to the router for about 60 SECONDS or so. Is there a way for me to disable this? Or *censored* just try to fix it so it accepts the PBC method (even if I let it fully complete it still pops up anywhere between 5mins to an hour at a time) - after it loads and finishes 2mins later the connection is back online again.

I use a Sagemcom [email protected] router provided by my PROVIDER (Sky). Been having this issue for a year on my laptop but I've never had to use it as frequently until now since my desktop crashed and building a new one.
I only use the above single router/modem.

Any help or why this is happening WOULD be appreciated.

Solve : How to log internet usage of various users on the same router?

Answer»

Hi,

In my company we are using an internet connection that has a pay per MB plan. I need help on logging the data usage of each user, either based on IP addresses or MAC Addresses (the latter will be better, so that we do not have to assign static IP addresses).

We have tried DUMeter, but it has several SHORTCOMINGS. It has to be installed on each of the PCs connecting through the router. It has issues with non-windows devices such as mobile phones and tablets. It can also be disabled by the user.

I am okay with DEDICATING one PC for just the purpose of logging the usage.http://bandwidthcontroller.com/Thanks for the help.

I have downloaded the trial version of the software and have installed it on my PC.

I have run through the settings and help files, but am not really able to GRASP the way the program runs and how I need to customise it to my requirements.

I have about 10 clients who connect at a time to the router, so I guess I need to use the Gateway Mode. Do I need to install it on  a PC running SERVER 2003, or any OS will do? Also can you please guide me on what I need to do with the settings thereafter to be able to ACHIEVE my aim?

I am a rookie and all the various options and terminologies are quite intimidating!

Solve : Connected to internet, but can't access anything?

Answer»

I recently tried to use my OLD laptop, and am having issues connecting to my wireless network. My WIFI card is installed correctly AFAIK, as I can search for my network and connect to it. When connected, I get an an average speed of 54 MBPS, and some minor usage while the system is idle (277 packets sent, 11 recieved currently). None of my web browsers work though, or any other software. Disabling the firewall does nothing, antivirus is disabled for now, and a full malwarebytes scan came back clean. I have spent the last 5 hours or so on google with no luck. Below is a list of all the CHANGES I have made. Any help and/or suggestions are appreciated!

WIFI Card: Reinstalled twice, tried using included software and windows' built in connections

Browsers: Wiped all histories, caches, etc. In internet explorer, reset all of the advanced settings.

CP -> Internet options: Reset security levels, removed the leftover dial up connection. In LAN settings, unchecked all three main boxes. Both options under the proxy server were checked, port set to 80.

CP -> Network Connections, wireless network TCP/IP settings: Automatic DNS and IP address checked, metric set to automatic

Winsock: Ran 'netsh winsock reset' through cmd, later used WinSockFix 1.1.0.13

CMD: Tried pinging my laptop's IP (10.0.0.5), instant response. Pinged default gateway (10.0.0.1), no response.

Comcast combination Modem/Router: Power cycled, looked over settings but changed nothing. I doubt this is the issue, as the internet works fine for any other device.

I just install a new server 08 r2,  I configure this as my dns and dhcp server for my clients, I also have a router on my network which gives internet acess as well. if I authorize the server dhcp service on my server and disable the router dhcp  and give my clients a static ip from server dhcp using the router ip as the default gateway they still CANT GET internet.... what do I do for clients to acess internet ...?

Solve : Wifi Connection - MBPS - Lenovo - Broadcom?

Answer»

I recently purchased a Windows 8 - Lenovo Laptop (It arrived yesterday.). I have been experiencing MBPS drops all day. It goes from 72 MBPS to 5.5 MPS and a few places inbetween.  I have 4 out of 5 bars most of the time. It does drop down to 3 out of 5 sometimes. The MBPS sometimes goes back up, but I have had to restart my computer to fix the problem a few times.

I had a Dell - Windows 7 Laptop and I didn't have this problem before. In my household we have 3 Laptops, the other two connect fine. We have a PS3 and Xbox 360. Both of them aren't having any issues.

I have manually updated Broadcom to try and see if that would help. It didn't seem to do anything.

I have McAfee LiveSafe - Internet Security.

This windows 8 computer is using a Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter.

Router: Motorola Surfboard
Model: 586121

Wireless Router: NetGear N600 Wireless Dual Band Router
Model: WNDR3400v2

I do not KNOW that much about computers so any help would be appreciated.

The Xbox 360 was having some connection issues earlier and so was one of the other laptops.

I would have edited this into the previous post, but I couldn't seem to find a PLACE to do it.

Apparently the Modem I have isn't compatible with Windows 8. Is there anything that I can do?
In my thinking, a consumer should never have to troubleshoot a new computer.
Is it true that you began to have issues only after you started to use the new laptop? You could reason that the new computer is the problem. And yes, that indeed does happen.

I strongly commend returning the computer to the store whee your bought it. Maybe they will exchange it for the same model. That could fix the problem.

When a wireless device malfunctions, it can interfered with other devices in the same area. This has been documented elsewhere. The test is to try another device of the same type and model. But with a laptop that means another laptop. The wireless transponder  is not a removable thing.

For other ideas, please do report what you have tried.

I am having my Internet Provider come out tomorrow to see if getting a different modem would help the problem because the one I have is not Windows 8/8/1 compatible. Could that not be the problem?

Also, If that doesn't work I will return it and get another laptop to see if that changes anything.

I've tried updating different drivers, using the Google Public DNS, both of which still don't help the problem with the Mbps dropping from 72 to 5.5.I am assuming that the problem is only with my windows 8.1 laptop and not the others because there was a storm earlier and now the other laptops are all fine and this laptop is the only one that is having connection problems and mbps problems. Wrong!
The modem does not have to interact with Windows 8. The modem connects to the router -Right? But the  wireless router does interact with Windows 8. You can do the windows 8 network setup again and see if that helps.

However, I think you have a problem with the wireless module inside the laptop. Sometimes they do come from the factory defective. The fact that the bother machines work good  would suggest this.

Can y0u disable the wireless module in the laptop? Is so, try using any BUDGET  wireless USB adapter. Windows 8 will work fine with most of them. Even the cheap ones can do 54 Mbps. Amazon has some for under $20 that work with any version of Windows. I really think it is the wireless module in the laptop, not the router or modem or windows 8.

I would say that you are right about the wireless module, but one of the other laptops in the HOUSE has apparently been having the same issues. It's a windows 7 and I had these two computers side by side and when one isn't working the other isn't either, so I don't think it is an issue with the laptops, it might be an issue with the router or modem. Quote
I had these two computers side by side and when one isn't working the other isn't either,
That is against the rules of common sense. Both computers have wireless transponders and they wail mutually interference with each other. Wireless computers should be kept at least 6 fest (two meters) apart.
Moreover, if one laptop has a FLAWED wireless module it can interfere with anything in the house. Like a XBox or PlayStation as will as a PC, laptop or tablet.
And yes, a defective wireless module can even mess a cell phone, which has different frequencies.
So I strongly recommend you verify that new PC is normal. Apparently it is not. New computers, or anything electronic, has a known infant mortality issue. Lower QC keeps the cost down and really annoys the consumer. BTW: Even big companies have got into trouble with the FCC for not sticking to the rules for radio emissions of electronic devices,. It happens.

Interference with wireless devices can be a serous issue.
Look here at a recent problem:
LA building's lights interfere with cellular network, FCC says

No, I am not saying your mew laptop is stopping cell calls. I sited the above to show that it does happen even when you think would t can not be.

Is there any way to boost / get better wifi reception so i can connect to the wifi? it only have 2 bars and it can't connect with 2 bar, do i need to buy the tools or create some tools myself? no internet no life for me How far are you from the Wi-Fi transmitter?
When we say 'Wi-Fi' we mean a kind of digital microwave that
can have a coverage of 100  to 500 meters, more or less.
A reference:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi
Also see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Municipal_wireless_network

But cell phones, as you know, cover a much larger area. In some suburban or rural areas people use a 3g or 4g cell phone to get  internet reception.
Of course, you have to pay for it.
In some cities there are areas where Wi-Fi is free, but mostly the inner city only.
In California there are many such places. See this:
http://www.wififreespot.com/ca.php

For long range reception, you have to buy or build an outdoor antenna.

You must have a clear view of the target to get long range with the antenna.

can u give me the exact video how to create the antenna ?
i don't have the exact LOCATION from the wifi location either, i just know that i get 2 bar, because usually i connect it from the mall and get very decent speed with my account. but at my RELATIVES location it only get 2 bar and now i use phone tethering to connect, but extremely slow enough to do ANYTHING, i just want to know how to insert the antenna Details for super cheap.

Solve : FTP working over wan but not lan?

Hey there GUYS and gals. I'm trying to set up an ftp server using the filezilla server software. While I've been able to ACCESS the server through the internet so far I have not been able to do so over lan. I've tried accessing it with its firewall software turned off but I can't seem to connect to it over lan.Annnnnnnnnnnd I'm an idiot. I'm not too familiar with dd-wrt. A few weeks ago I made a virtual wireless interface and APPARENTLY it is not connected with lan. I suppose you should delete this, or leave it on the off chance someone else does something that dumb.Well I thought it might be a NAT Loopback issue.  Many older routers did not have this feature.  Since you don't have any internal DNS resolution the DNS is being provided by your DNS or Domain name provider.  So it has to go out and come back in to your network.  Also known as loopback.  What I did to get around this was edit my hosts file on each computer to associate the LAN IP address with the domain name. But who needs FTP on a local network? Solve : Getting a camera system's DVR accessible by remote connections.?

Answer»

Hey guys. I've got a QSEE brand camera system and I've hooked everything up fine. To my dismay I found that the ISP of my dad's shop doesn't allow port forwarding(fail), so I can't forward port 85 to access the DVR from home. They told me that instead of forwarding they could give us a set of static IP's and that would take care of the problem.

I had them activate the static IP's and I got the router assigned to one of them without any problem(I'll CALL it x.x.x.90 for example), but I'm afraid that I just don't know how to go about getting it set up. I tried going into the DVR settings and manually configuring it as the static IP address x.x.x.91, but when I tried to open http://x.x.x.91:85 or http://x.x.x.91 from an OUTER network device it wouldn't connect.
I also tried manually configuring within the DVR to the IP 10.0.0.6(a LAN IP) and could then acces the DVR from a computer withing the network by going to http://10.0.0.6:85, but when trying to connect from outside the network to both http://x.x.x.90:85 and http://x.x.x.91:85 they did not connect.

Can someone tell me what I may be doing WRONG here? Quote

To my dismay I found that the ISP of my dad's shop doesn't allow port forwarding(fail)

Generally the ISP will block certain ports, but never heard of an ISP blocking port forwarding as for the only way to do this would be if they had admin controls of the router you are using that are blocked out of configuring.

Generally when an ISP has a specific port blocked, you can get around this by using a different port number that is not blocked and then add  the port forwarding in your router to accept communications to be directed at a static IP of a system or device you have that is at that address in which the communications are passed through an alternate port. BUT for this to work you also need to be able to change the port on the system or device that is listening so that it matches up with the alternate port forwarding port number. Also the other device(s) elsewhere will need to know to communicate at this other specific port such as I have used port 8077, 8078, and 8079 before for FTP which my ISP was blocking the commonly used ports for FTP and I was able to get around their FTP roadblock. However, most ISPs also have in fine PRINT under the rules and regulations of your plan that circumventing their content blockers is a violation of the service agreement and they could sever the service based on this violation. However I have yet to hear of ISPs who have been able to track down FTP servers on alternate ports. I still run FTP on alternate ports and they havent shut me down yet and its been going for 6 years with no problems. My FTP is mainly for remote access to data that I store on the FTP server which is a low power consumption laptop that runs 24/7/365 with its display cover closed.

Try using port 8077 instead of port 85 which I know is not blocked by many ISP's and make sure the router had the port forwarding configured for this port for this static IP. Quote
They told me that instead of forwarding they could give us a set of static IP's and that would take care of the problem

Having a static IP is nice because then you don't have to worry about dynamic DNS (the external IP will stay the same), but that does not eliminate the problem of port forwarding. You will still need to port forward. Like the other poster said, try configuring it with a high port number like 8077 and then forward that. It should work.

There is also a nice tool: http://canyouseeme.org/Thanks for the tips, I'll try that stuff out when I go down tomorrow and will post what's happened.

And, just so that you know, his ISP is ridiculous. They supply a modem that's completely locked down, no editting of any settings and most ports are blocked(hopefully not 8077 like you said).

One idiot said I would have to take the pc to be serviced. Amazing how much time and money  someone with expertise can save.

Are the above cmd entries standard for a network card not communicating? They are and there are many others.

IPCONFIG is afrequently used instruction especially with the ( all ) switch as IPCONFIG/all

Also the ping.yahoo.com should state ping www.yahoo.com instead, but yahoo as a ping location is not a good reference IMO, I always ping www.google.com instead which will show more realistic latencys to that of your fastest response from the site through your internet connection.

Others to share with you are the following that you can check out:

IPCONFIG/flushdns                         ( This flushes the DNS resolver cache. Not used frequently, but sometimes needed. )
tracert www.somewebsite.com      (This will show the routing path to the website from your HOME and can point out latencies)
tracert xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx                   ( Trace Route to an IP so if xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx was entered with 172.16.4.235  IP would route )
IPCONFIG/all                                   ( Most widely used which shows all NICs and info )

*You can add a /? to the end of them as a help switch and see all options available. Any that are unclear google has good references on in the search with examples that you can look at.

There are also others, but these are the most commonly used when trying to identify issues with CONNECTIVITY to the internet. I used tracert before to identify a bad backbone connection for comcast. Each time the route went through a specific hop of theirs it would either show extremely latent delay or wouldnt resolve. Pinging did not show the cause between my home and say www.google.com, but on every like 5th ping to google, it would fail or take forever. I called up comcast and requested to talk with a network admin as for I need to talk with someone with equal IT Admin experience as myself because the person I got was going through flip chart flow charts and did not understand networking. I was in contact with a guy and stated that you have an ISSUE with this hop on your backbone at this IP. Immediately I was met with " Are you a hacker ", there is no way you can know that unless you are hacking our systems. I said NO I am NOT hacking your network, but if you perform a bunch of trace routes to www.google.com from my area you will find that about 1 in 5 tracert tests will hit this based on the dynamic routing of your DNS and many points of presence on the internet backbone, and this one at this IP has issues. I said tracert is included in the Windows OS and is not a hacking tool that is in violation of my service with you my ISP. He then quieted down and said we will check into this. Expecting something to be done about it I figured they would have it fixed soon.

NOPE ... 3 days and the problem remained so I got blown off. My solution was to no longer use my ISP Comcast for DNS but instead use OpenDNS through IPs from MIT and the problem was gone by using a different DNS provider. You can use a different DNS if you find the same problem with your ISP as well.

Glad you got in contact with someone who knew the correct fix for your issue. So many ISPs have people who are just workers and not IT guru's.

Solve : Theoretical question about domain registration?

Answer»

I've always wondered, but NEVER bothered to ask, why you can't register your own domain name for free if you have a DNS server. What else is required? It seems very corrupt that only certain companies can actually do this. I don't KNOW much about how domain servers work; just the general idea. Quote from: Linux711 on February 14, 2014, 06:43:43 PM

I've always wondered, but never bothered to ask, why you can't register your own domain name for free if you have a DNS server.
You can.

But no top-level DNS servers will use it as an authoritative name server.

DNS queries are run against root servers.

Quote
It seems very corrupt that only certain companies can actually do this.
Not really. We don't actually buy domain names- you rent them from a registrar. The price you pay is for the registrar to create and maintain that CNAME record as well as the appropriate fees the ICANN imposes on it.

If anybody was able to create their own DNS server, there would be no way to know where Domains actually lead. Different Domain name servers will point to different IP Addresses based entirely on the whim of the owner of the server. the ICANN ensures that there is a STANDARD agreement amongst all authoritive Domain Name Servers about where domains lead. Linux711, It is a matter of fairness for all, not just you.
You can buy a registrar.  Do  you  have the money?
But a registrar can not sign a name that is already used.

CNAME is the group that KEEPS track of domain names. It should be obvious that you can not have duplicate names in the system. Otherwise it could not be the Wold Wilde Web.

Also, you can buy a small country and own all the domains of that country. Just declare martial law and get the citizens  to back up the coup.

This might help. Some Top Level Domain suffixes are  seldom used.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Internet_top-level_domains

You might want to buy Norfolk Island. It has only 2500 people in 35 sq kilometers.  Offer them 400 million US and see if they go for it. Then you can have you rown domains.

But thou may want an low cost alternative.

Solve : Bottle necked Internet Speed?

Answer»

So I built a computer 2 summers ago. It's GREAT and works perfectly except the internet speed is bottle necked to about half of the internet speed I pay for. I know it's something with the computer because I've had 2 different internet providers at TWO different locations both of which I've experienced slower internet speeds than my roommates. I've used different ETHERNET cables as well. I don't use wifi on my computer but I do for my ps3 (the same CONNECTION as the land line) which turns out to actually be faster than my pc directly connected to the router. The only conclusion I've come to is that my motherboard might be faulty or drivers not up to date. I personally didn't put the PC together I had someone do it for me. I have replaced the RAM from 4gb to 16gb THOUGH. I would really like to figure out what is causing this problem.

Solve : Stream or Download. Least bandwidth??

Answer»

AT&T has upped my speed but lowered my bandwidth. I mean usage.

The speed  for download is now at 5 Mbps, up from the standard 1.5 Mbps

My monthly bandwidth usage is set at 150 GB.
Extra charge e for 50GB is $10.

So here is my question:
Should I stream  MOVIES and TV shows?
OR
Should I download movies and TV shows?

Winch will cost me less?

Usage is IDENTICAL for streaming or downloading. Thanks, I will just continue using the Netflix steaming. The actual method won't make a difference to the transfer but streaming will likely use a higher compression making for a smaller SIZE than with a downloaded video which will tend to be very high quality. If it takes the same bandwidth wouldn't you be better off downloading so you can re-watch things if you feel like it rather then re-streaming?

Solve : Setting up a virtualized network?

Answer»

Hey guys! It's been a while.

I'm looking at SETTING up a bunch of new stuff, and I just wanted to SEE if anyone has pointers on setting up a network that utilizes virtualization. I'm talking start to finish. Setting up everything from the DC and AD all the way to connecting the workstations. I realize there could be a billion things that you could SAY to that, but PERSONALLY I'm just looking for some simple study at the moment.

Anyway, any (pertinent) links are welcome and any (pertinent) advice as well!

Once I start the actual setup I'm sure I'll be adding questions to this thread, but for the moment SOMETHING to study would be perfect!

Thanks in advance!

Solve : Adding a Wireless Harddrive to my network.?

Answer»

I just purchased the Patriot Aero 1 TB external hard drive today. I really thought this would be a simple installation but I was wrong.

I got pretty far through the steps though...They have an app AVAILABLE for you to download to your smart phone which I did that gives your the ability to access the Aero's settings as well as view the contents and create directories. I was able to do all this perfectly fine. HOWEVER I for the life of me cant figure out how to view the contents of this drive wirelessly from my desktop. I go to my wireless connections near my clock and I see the Aero listed there and try to connect via my wireless adapter but no luck. I know for a fact the ability to communicate to this device from the PC is possible because I entered a static ip address which Patriot gives on there website http://www.patriotmemory.com/support/faq1p.jsp?source=faq&id=316 I was able to pull the exact same settings page up on my desktop as my smart phone pulled up.

Anyway my current hardware is:
PC Desktop Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit
Linksys Wireless N E2000 Router
Asus USB-AC53 802.11ac Wireless N Adapter

Just before I went to click send on this post I NOTICED something strange in my Device Manager...In Other devices I have Internet Access Server with a yellow exclamation mark.

The drivers for this device are not INSTALLED. (Code 28)

There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.
Seems like you were almost there

First you need to connect to the Device via the SSID.

Then you will go to http://10.10.10.254/

login with admin/admin

Go into the setup tab and you'll see "Hostname" and by default is "Patriot"

If you go to \\Patriot you will see the share at this point like you were expecting.

You can also then map a network drive to \\Patriot if you wanted to.

Solve : Can I use the modem from one isp on another?

Answer»

So my router is havng problems and i have a modem/router from my old isp. I tried to hook it up and there was no internet. What did i do wrong? Everything was plugged in and turned on.  The wifi was working but the internet light wasnt solid so there was no actual internet connection through the modem.Assuming the modem is compatible with your new ISP's system, they NEED to enter and authorize the MAC address of the modem.i don't know too much about internet stuff but i FOUND with this problem if the email the ISP gives you is locked into the modem you can't change it. for example [email protected], if the "optusnet.com" bit is greyed out(doesn't let you change it) and not changeable, no you cant use it with a new ISPhuh? You can use any email address with any modem.my old modem was locked to optus. So it had optusnet.com locked in so all you could change was the user name but not the IPS name. so for example [email protected], the modem would only let you change someone123 but it would not let you change the optusnet.com bit.You can access any and all email accounts from any modem. Let's move on.

Solve : Free Free FTP Clients. Good??

Answer»

This LINK recommends five free FTP programs.

Five Free FTP.

I sometimes have trouble with the one I use, so maybe I souled change.
Money is no object. I mean for them, not me. It has to be free.

1. FileZilla. I have used it, but it confuses me.

2. gFTO. Never tried it.

3. Free FTP  Maybe I will try.

4. Bare FTP  Never hear of it. Is it porn?

5. FireFTP   Fire? Is it  safe?

I need simple. Which is best for me?    Just CURIOUS - what is it about FileZilla that you find confusing? It has too many windows and options.
I am used to a source directory, a destination directory and a small menu for site, user and password. The visuals of FileZilla a were just too much information for my small brain. If  I can not adapt, I will have to stick to my old thing.Filezilla is what I use mainly as for I like all the extra features, however a more simple client MAY be WS_FTP. I used this years AGO when uploading changes to websites. http://www.wsftple.com/

Solve : Setting up Desktop to use my home wireless?

Answer»

I recently purchased a used HP Desktop from work the was part of a workgroup. It has Windows XP Professional on it. I would like to know how to get on the internet on this computer using my current home wireless network. No luck so far. THANKS for any help you can give me.Does this computer have a wireless adapter in it?  Many don't.  If you have the full model of it, post it here, and we can at least then see if it came with a wireless card as standard.

If it doesn't currently have one, you can either buy a wireless adapter for it, or just CONNECT it to your network with an Ethernet cable as normal.I have a feeling that is the problem. It is HP DX5150 SFF. Funny but before I bought it I asked 2 questions. The first one was is it wireless?

Is there somewhere on the computer where I can look. Use it came with the machine, the company had no reason to add one.

Also, this may sound really dumb. If it doesn't have wireless adapter or it is too expensive, my wireless router is the living room where Windstream installed it as a DSL. And the computer will be in a BEDROOM. Is there a way to have a second router??? using the wireless from the living room that I can put next to computer in bedroom and use Ethernet cable?

ThanksSorry but I just tried moving router and it works in bedroom but due to location of phone jack, it is still across the room.  Didn't think I COULD use another phone jack, duh! but it works. Still want to try for wireless.

Thanks so much. Look forward to your answer. This is the desktop the OP has.

But it has lots of ports.  The RJ-45 is a standard Ethernet. Any of the USB ports can be used with a cheap wireless adapter.

A USB wireless adapter like the one linked above would be the quickest and easiest way to get your PC working on wireless, then, as your PC currently doesn't have that feature.  Bear in mind that a physically small adapter like that may not have great signal, so if you're planning to have it a little way away from the router, you may want to consider a model with an antenna you can see, as you're likely to get a better signal.Thank you both so much for your help.

Solve : Trying to network windows 7 and vista, with vista as the server.?

Answer»

I am a PA for a Mary Kay consultant, and we have a problem. Her laptop runs vista, mine runs windows 7. Last week we were trying to create a network so that I can access her CLIENT information. She uses Boulevard, and was given instructions on how to set up the network. Everything went fine, until I tried to log into the network. I can see her computer, but when I try to log on, it asks for a password, but her computer isn't set up to need a password. We tried setting a password on her laptop, but that password was rejected. I know vista doesn't have a homegroup, so I'm not sure what to do next.

I am somewhat familiar with computers, I know enough to know when I can't figure something out, can figure out some problems by googling, but I haven't found much that applies to my situation. The vista laptop has to act as the server, because that's where everything is stored. Her laptop manufacturer suggested using a portable hard drive to transfer information, but I'm HOPING there is some WAY to create this network, so I don't have to remember to carry the hard drive with me all the time.

Thanks, Faith. Both computers are on a a local Ethernet connection. -Right?

Sharing between Vista and Windows 7

Another scenario you might run into is having to share files and printers between a Vista and Windows 7 machine. The process is a bit easier than sharing between XP and Windows 7, but takes a bit of work. The Homegroup feature isn’t compatible with Vista, so we need to go through a few different steps. Depending on what your printer is, sharing it should be easier as Vista and Windows 7 do a much better job of automatically locating the drivers.
[...from the link above]
You may  try to again  setup networking again on both computers. A restart is needed. Both her computers should have a password for  long in, even if only one user. Set both computers to the MSHOME group.

Windows networking can work as a pair-to peer mode. You need to set sharing on a few directories on both computers.

EDOT: When using Windows network is is not a good idea to share the whole system drive. Instead, create a new portion that has files of mutual interest. That shall be a data PARTITION for non-system files. Otherwise, set only a limited few folders for shrinking to avoid future security issues.

Solve : how can I configure my internet connection PPTP????

Answer»

Long story short I got a new router from my ISP they said I should be able to plug it in and it would work I tried that and it did not work I bought a Belkin router to increase my signal strength and it seemed to not work either it appear to change the name of my connection and I am currently running on a PPTP connection but for some reason it will not work I was told that I am supposed to connect using my username and password on a PPTP connection for my ISP I do not know what else to do and I cannot figure out how to get this internet to work I can't even get dial up speeds but when I do connect it is very little to none. I assume part of it has something to do with me changing the name of my internet connection I changed it and they said absolutely do not change the name of it because it will make it so I cannot connect but then I changed it back and nothing changed I only changed the name as a last resort and all I did was cap the first LETTER which I guess is enough for it not to connect so sense then I put it back and it STILL WONT connect. Plz help I need to figure out my website hosting and why they are ripping me off plus check email accounts.  Thanks! After looking at your post, my gut tells me your are making this too hard. Your ISP should provide you will the service you want. You  should not have to buy more equipment.
Quote

... to increase my signal strength...
What does that mean? Why do you need more signal strength?
Using PPP has nothing to do with signal strength.
Unless you have DONE this all before, you should let the ISP setup your modem and router for your computer.

EDIT: What I want to say is that it is getting harder to get free help for an ISP or anybody else. Except a few places. LIKE this forum.
If you bought the router from the nISP, they can set it up by remote control.

Solve : Port Forwarding for game server on Belkin router/ Win 7?

Answer»

goal in a NUTSHELL: I'm attempting to help someone (online) to forward a port so they can run a game SERVER.

On the game side of things, I also run a server for this game on my machine (XP Pro with a Linksys E2000), and they can connect to me fine. I mention this to help eliminate questions about problems with the server setup or game itself as we seem to have that process down ok.

The key differences between our setups is they run Win 7, and have a Belkin router (F5D8236-4v3) - both of which I'm not familiar with other than what I've learned over the past couple of days. It could be either, but I SUSPECT the Router settings to be the issue...but Im guessing.

I've been using this page as a visual guide to see what they're looking at as we go; http://screenshots.portforward.com/routers/Belkin/F5D8236-4v3/default.htm , as well as screencaps from them.

The game is called 'Starbound'; http://starbounder.org/Guide:Setting_Up_Multiplayer.

Some of the steps taken so far;

-set up game server essentially as I did on my machine (different in name only)

-set a static IP for their system

-accessed router via browser to open port 21025 (TCP) on their 'virtual servers' page (http://screenshots.portforward.com/routers/Belkin/F5D8236-4v3/Virtual_Servers.htm)

-uninstalled temp version of Norton (which had apparently been controlling firewall)

-set a new rule for the port in Window's firewall (which didn't let me in so...)

-disabled Windows firewall

-disabled router's firewall

-tried changing connection type in router to 'static' (http://screenshots.portforward.com/routers/Belkin/F5D8236-4v3/Connection_Type.htm) - default was dynamic

At this point, they can now run the server successfully, and connect to it via their LOCAL machine. Using Portforward's port checker tool as well as online sources, their port still shows as closed though, and no one else can connect. According to the server log, I don't even ping their machine - it's as if no attempt has been made (e.g., if it were a password issue, etc. it would show that I had tried and failed to connect).

So, something is still blocking access and giving at least the appearance of a closed port. There must be some additional steps either with Win 7 or their Belkin router that I'm unaware of, since these steps worked on my machine. It may well be security setting on the router, which I'm not familiar with (my default setting worked find so I never messed with those).

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thx

Solve : Bandwidth Consumption?

Answer»

My modem is connected to 4 PCs on LAN. I notice that one of the PCs is causing the internet to slow down when connected.

Let's call it PC 1. When PC 1 is not connected to the modem, only the other three PC 2-4 connected, I run a speedtest and can GET around 4Mbps. But once PC 1 is connnected, the speed will DROP drastically to around 2.5Mbps. Tested a few times and ALSO tried to swap PC 1 to other ports, same result.

The PC 1 is not downloading or streaming anything at the time of testing.

What could be the reason for the bandwidth drainage? What do you think?
A. Bad Hardware?
-or-
B. Bad Software?

A bad NIC (Network Interface Card) can cause errors to  force the system to retry several times when pockets are lost.
This is an easy fix. Buy a new NIC.

Bad Software could be some Malware using the PC1 to spawn attacks on other systems. Or using it for torrent files. Finding it can be hard.
Look at this:
http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=215493
Bandwith stealing malware

Hi Geek,

I thought of the two possibilities too.
Anyway, the owner of that PC is not around now. I'll talk to him to check for the possible issue when he is back.

Thanks.Hi Geek,

It turns out that he is leaving an online game running at the background even though he is not playing it.
Probably the game is sending/receiving information to/from the the game server even in idle mode.

Thanks.

That makes sense. Some on line games you can lose you R place if you log out. And some users have 'cheat' scripts that keep thyme in the game and they get fame.

Can  he get his own internet connection?

Hi Geek,

He left it running at background so that he does not have to load the game again when he WANTS to play, not because of the game progress. He was not aware that by doing so the game would drain the bandwidth.

Anyway, now he knows it and will close the game when he is not playing.

Solve : Lowering Ping raising speeds?

Answer»

I have 4g internet from viaero. I live about 4 MILES from the tower. I have AROUND 120ms ping all times. Will ADDING an antenna help lower ping. Their is also hills and stuff blocking signals. I get 3 down 0.5 up. Also I have the 3mbps plan but could I get faster speeds with an antenna?Simple answer, NO.
Radio waves travel very fast. Using 4G it is very reliable. Variations in piing are due more to network load and not transmission quality.

Let me explain. The 4 G system is very resilient for LOCAL problems. Local probes unmeaning issues in the coverage area. A time interval of  just 10 milliseconds is a very long time for a the local 4G propagation.

Consider this. in 10 ms the signal would have gone :
(300,000,000/0.001) = 3,000,000 meters or three thousand kilometers.

In other words, ping is a network issue, not a radio issue.

Solve : Connecting a wireless XP to a work/homegroup??

Answer»

Hello

I have three Win 7 computers (two are wireless) in a workgroup (or homegroup) so that a PRINTER can be shared.

I would now like to add a wireless PC tower (XP Professional) to that workgroup. I have some notes on how to do it with XP CONNECTED via a LAN, but not wirelessly.

Any links to a tutorial would be appreciated.

Thanks

High1Me too. After weeks of research, I never got a real answer. It used to work. Now it don't. Sorry, I am not able to help you. Just want you to know the problem is common. Many users find it HARD to do networking with wireless using windows XP. There are some issues with XP that may never be fixed. The work-around is to use a wired Ethernet connection to the group.

Hope somebody has a easy solution. As for me, I am thinking about moving my router to a location where I can reach both computers with Ethernet cable
If I come across a solution, I will post back.

Thanks for your reply.

High1Geek

Please see my post in the Windows forum: XP Admin password problem.

Hope it works out for you.

High1I have the same issue, but with only two WiFi connections (A PC or a Roku, and a laptop. The PC and Roku use the same MONITOR, so it's only one or the other). Windows XP is not involved- except on the laptop- The PC runs Windows 7. The connection issues appear even when the laptop is off.

My workaround was to GET a range extender with Ethernet inputs, then connect the two devices (Roku and the PC) physically to the extender. I then have the extender handle all wifi communications for both. That seems to help- and I even manage to connect wirelessly to the extender with the laptop. I would advise matching brands (I used Netgear for the router and extender) because there were a lot of odd issues otherwise...

Solve : Ethernet Frame 'MAC Destination/Source' to Hexadecimal?

Answer»

I'm needing to compare what is actually transmitted in the MAC destination or MAC source octets/bytes of an Ethernet frame, against an expected value expressed in HEXADECIMAL. The need for hexadecimal is part of a SYNTAX I must use. My question is to the correctness of the following method.

Example:
Having a MAC address of 8E-82-CB-80-95-12 ...

The actual bits/bytes transmitted would be 01110001 01000001 11010011 00000001 10101001 01001000 ?

Breakdown:
Hex:     8E                 82                 CB                 80                 95                12

Binary: 10001110     10000010     11001011     10000000     10010101     00010010

Actually Transmitted - Least Significant(right-most) Bit First:
            01110001     01000001     11010011     00000001     10101001     01001000

Hex Representation of Actual Transmitted Data: 71 41 D3 01 A9 48

Is this correct?
All help is appreciated.

Solve : Help me understand IP adress subnetting?

Answer»

I am taking a college course on computer networking as a part of my PC Maintenance & Repair and Networking degree and I have had a little trouble understanding how to subnet an IP address when configuring a new network. Could somebody try to explain it to me in as simple a way as possible.Pretty simple tutorial linked. Its about as simple as it can be without losing context on important details.

http://www.techopedia.com/6/28587/internet/8-steps-to-understanding-ip-subnetting

Useful tables at this LINK SHOWING which subnets are best for specific applications. But I WOULD suggest reading everything from beginning to end and multiple times if needed to grasp the concepts!

http://www.techopedia.com/6/28587/internet/8-steps-to-understanding-ip-subnetting/5

*When I got my computer science degree I had to do the math to show why I chose to go with a specific subnet mask ETC. Not sure if your professor wants you to know how to do the math or not, but it would be best to familiarize yourself with the process even though as seen in the above table, lots of people can use cheat sheets with the above info to avoid the redundant math. I ended up making an excel spreadsheet back in 1998 that did the conversions even though I had to manually do the work in class on paper. Then I found online tools that made it even easier.

For my computer science degree, the networking course had a test with word problems of a scenario and the scenario went into depth on the network that a corporation or smaller business needed and you then had to show all work and give the answer to all network info which also stated the subnet mask and class A, B, or C, etc and why, and you couldnt just go with an overkill subnet as the easy way out, it had to be exact to the needs of that network, so if you couldnt do the math, or didnt have a table to refer to, then you wouldnt have the answer and would fail. I got a 100% with the 5 problem test but it wasnt a easy test if you didnt study and know how to work it all out!!!

This info below might also be helpful to you if you have to calculate it all like I and many others had to. Not sure if they allow you to use reference table cheat sheets these days or not, but they didnt allow them when I went and got my degree. I had to do it all out manually   :

Solve : I need with net connection?

Answer»

Oh Lord - where to start. Hi guys, I have burdened you guys for a long time, but not in this forum. I run two WIN 7 machines, 1 laptop, 1 desktop, both 32 bit Os's now. I enjoyed file sharing fine until I upgraded the laptop from 64 bit to 32. From that point on I can't get connected to the network on the laptop.  Of course the desktop is the host. I'm sure the problem is in the laptop software.  Clicking on the icon on the laptop gets "no connections are available", "open network and sharing CENTER". The host computer is not sleeping.
I have returned to the host, closed & started anew the network, it shows the network alive & well. The host action center says "no issues detected". The network only shows the host devices. The laptop shows the aforementioned "no CONNECTION are available".  Ok fellows , I'm COUNTING on you.   Well, I'm going back in!

Have you gone thru this process?

Solve : Belkin N150 Issues?

Answer»

Type of Connection : Dynamic
Light Status : Flashing Amber
Cable Broadband
Operating System : WINDOW 7 x64 Home Edition
COnnection Status : Disconnected

I have a Belkin N150 Router and the Amber light wont STOP blinking , any ideas would greatly be appreciated , also im not able to connection to the internet what so ever. What all steps have you taken to try and resolve this issue? Have you tried eliminating the router by plugging directly into your cable MODEM? If you have not, be sure to unplug the power from the cable modem for 30 seconds and then plug your computer directly into the modem using the ethernet cord. After you have PLUGGED directly into the modem, check your IP address by opening the command prompt and typing ipconfig to ensure you do not have a 169.XXX.XXX.XXX ip address. If you have a 169.XXX.XXX.XXX ip, type ipconfig /renew. Check your ip once again. If you do not have a 169.XXX.XXX.XXX you should be able to get online. This has eliminated your ISP and modem as being an issue. Now unplug the modem from your computer and cycle the power from your wireless router and modem for 30 seconds by unplugging the power. Plug the modem directly into internet port on your wireless router and another ethernet cord from your computer into the LAN 1 port on the wireless router. Plug in the power for both your modem and wireless router. Check your IP address now. It should register a 192.168.X.X ip address. Attempt to get online. If you are unable to get online STILL, try pressing the reset button on the router using a paper clip or something similar in size for no longer that 5-10 seconds. You should see the lights flash on the wireless router. Cycle the power on both the modem and the router once again. Attempt to get online. If you are still unable to get online, refer to your users manual to try accessing the router configuration page. If you are unable to access the router configuration page, then it would seem that you have a bad router at this point.

Solve : Internet Connection Confilct?

Answer» GOOD day! Hey, I just wanna ask for help about my internet connection. Sometimes my internet speed is fast but most of the time, it doesn't LOAD any web pages completely. I think I have a problem with my DNS Server or IP Address, but all of these are set to "Obtain Automatically" and I don't have any idea on solving this problem. My browser is Google Chrome, the updated version. Actually I don't have a problem with my computer, just my internet connection or router. My router's Linksys Cisco E1200 with the latest firmware. Please help, thank you!You said:

Sometimes my internet speed is fast...
That means your equipment does work good and DNS is not the issue. DNS allures bring up an error message.
And you sent on to say that often it is slow and does not load fully. This would more likely be a problem with your provider. This can happen in DSL nor cable service.

Have you talked to tech support with your local service provider?I'd contact your ISP and have them perform a loopback test to verify that the connection between you and your ISP is good. They will be able to see signal strength and problems should be detected if its a Home Modem to ISP issue.

Other things that can cause problems are if other users are connected and eating up massive amounts of bandwidth downloading and or streaming video at the same time etc. * I ENDED up setting up a QoS configuration in my router that I flashed with DD-WRT so that no one device can choke off adequate bandwidth to other devices. I also dedicated an allocation of bandwidth to the Vonage VoIP hardware when the phone is in use and at the same time 2 systems are on netflix etc.

I would also perform a ping test between your local hardware and outbound and look for problems.

open command shell by entering CMD at start -> Run or Start -> Search Programs and Files and enter

ipconfig

This will show info, now take the gateway IP and ping that such as PING 192.168.1.1 and verify that it has fast speed in low ms response time and is not 100ms or greater or lost pings.

Next now that you KNOW your local network at home is good ( hopefully ), you ping outbound such as at

PING www.google.com -t

The -t will create a persistant ping so it will keep pinging until ended by CTRL + C orclosing the shell window. But the response times on a healthy connection to the internet with no one else eating up bandwidth should be less than 200ms during a busy part of the day when everyone is hitting google to as low as around 20ms when most people are sleeping etc. * This is one reason why I enjoy the internet at night better than during the day, its faster with less traffic conjestion. * If you see lost ping packets such as No Response and numbers in ms that are high and jumping around then you have a problem and its outboard to the ISP which is connected to the site such as Google through a backbone to the internet. If all looks well, but the system is STILL misbehaving then its a local problem with the computer itself.

As far as DNS goes, I do not use the DNS provided by my ISP, as for it lags ( Comcast ) and so I use OpenDNS instead and have my router configured to use one of 2 DNS servers through OpenDNS and have had no problems with that free DNS service.

Solve : Wireless Connetion lost on laptop?

Answer»

I have two HP Laptops, both very similar specs.
My ISP - Virgin MEDIA is WORKING fine on one laptop but the other one it has a RED X on the icon in the task bar.
The HP Pavillion g6 notebook with the problem is running Windows 7 (64bit).
It has an Intel Pentium CPU 2.10GHz
6GB RAM
The Network card is Ralink RT5390R 802.11b/g/n 1x1 Wi-Fi Adapter. Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller.

It seems to be CONNECTED to the internet intermittently.

Any ideas
Thanks

A red X means the wireless radio button (F12) key is turned off.

Solve : Symbol WS2000 Switch with WSAP 5110 Access Points?

Answer»
I 've got a couple of questions for anyone that knows this system. We currently have this system in my kids school. We want to add more access points throughout the school. Do the access points have to be homeruns..? Also, can you split the Cat5 going from the switch to go to 2 access points...? I'm guessing no, but wanted to ask anyway. If they have to be homeruns, than how would I add more access points...? Since it only has 4 available points, would I need another switch to have more access points...?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I see this WSAP 5110 are really cheap second hand. Quote
Also, can you split the Cat5 going from the switch to go to 2 access points...?

Yes you can thru a SINGLE Cat5 Cable that is half duplex. I used two Y splitters one at each end of a 75ft Cat5 run to avoid having to run another cable through a tight crawl space. There are 8 wires ( 4 pairs ) in each Cat5 cable and only 2 pairs are used with half duplex which is what most network devices run on unless you have servers that are full duplex etc. This half duplex allows for you to run 2 nodes off of a single cable by splitting the 2 pairs of 4 wires.

* Your switch will have to have an available port to take 2 patch cables though, so it would be 2 patch cables to the Y splitter that joins and combines the 2 network connections over a single Cat5 cable ( using all pairs ), and then at the other end of the cable another Y splitter that actually splits what was combined initially back out to the 2 network connections back to the switch. And this acts LIKE 2 x half duplex network homeruns from the main switch outwards over a single cat5 cable.

Here are the Y-Splitters that I am using which I bought through Cyberguys... also note that I also needed to add a double ended female Cat5e couplers to allow the 2 male ends, male end of Cable and male end of Y adapter to connect. I got the couplers cheap off of amazon. I was able to do this for like $22 total and was way better than crawling on dirt under home in crawl space with cobwebs and with like 18" of clearance in tight places. http://www.cyberguys.com/product-details/?productid=6407&sk=MC71419&gclid=CN3D-4f-hbsCFUdhfgodqDoAng

In any wireless setup, i would suggest as many home runs as you can get, as for a dedicated home run for each device will give the best performance while if you have a bunch acting as repeaters off of another with a home run, if you have lots of traffic it will come to a crawl if for example 1 or 2 people are streaming content on the wifi such as a PBS Kids video etc. With the Y adapters you can minimize how many runs to home and cut the home runs in half if you form a T at the Y connection and send an access point in opposite directions such as 1 in every corner of the school, so you have 2  home runs of which each home run is Y split at both ends to make 2 dedicated network connections per home run, so  you would have all corners of building covered and only 2 home runs. * Switch would need to have 4 ports for 4 dedicated connections over 2 homerun cables for 4 devices with dedicated half duplex.

** As far as familiarity with this specific switch and access points, I have not worked with these specific models but have worked with Symbol brand network devices before with Point of Sale Wireless communications. Thanks ! That makes a lot of SENSE and helps me a lot ! I have the access points already ran. So I would need to go into a all female splitter(i think). I already have the cat5 cables run to the access points, so I would need to go into a female than have 2 cat5 cables coming out to go to the two access points...

Does that make sense,...? If so, can you suggest good brand for all female spliter...?I havent found a all female Y adapter yet. I ended up just going the route of the Y adapter in the link that I shared and buying cheap double ended female couplers for like $2.49 each + shipping ( one at each end of single cat5 used as 2 half duplex network connections ) , which make for an all female Y.

I have seen people also pull a single Cat5e cable before and punch the pairs into 2 x RJ45's which lock into the outlet covers making for 2 x half duplex connections and not needing to use the Y and the coupler. BUT.. This has to be set up as 2  punch downs at the rack/patch panel or another wall in building which is used to patch 2 connections over a single cat5 cable.

But my home was built in 1973 and I owned it since 1994 and so I had to modernize it myself and took the easier/cheaper path of drilling a 3/8" hole in floor of livingroom where the cable and broadband modem is and then running 75ft of Cat5e under home to bedroom with 3/8" hole to snake the cable back up into home at far end of home where I have all my network hardware and most systems. I then have a Y at both ends of this single 75ft run of Cat5e and I am essentially passing the Cable modems connection 75 ft to my main router and then a patch cable out of router goes into the other end of the Y and sends the protected behind firewall + DHCP etc to the available connection at the Y in livingroom, where I have an 8-port switch and have PS3, HTPC, and Bluray Streaming Player etc connected to that 8-port switch.

This strange config has worked flawless for about 3 years with no problems with speeds as fast as 25mbps downloads and 5mbps uploads as well as 100mbps between devices in livingroom and bedroom at half duplex. Below is a quick MSPAINT sketch showing my use of these. * Note: There is a very small amount of latency added when adding a switch to a router, but its not noticable between direct connection to router and using a connection of off 8-port Netgear switches.

[recovering disk space, attachment DELETED by admin]On the WS 2000' there are only 4 ports for POE and the access points (WSAP-5110) need to be setup or programmed. When I try to add\split a new one, it will not work.
What am I doing wrong ?POE = Power Over Ethernet.... This uses the normally unused 2 pairs for transfer of power to remote network devices that are powered via the same CAT5 or Cat6 cable that they communicate on.

This splitter will not power POE devices at the opposite end that require power because all pairs are in use for data, with none available for power. I wasn't aware that you were using POE with this setup and appologize for not asking before hand. With the splitters you would need each access point powered independently vs off of the POE power.

The best and cheapest solution for this setup with POE is probably unfortunately running 4 home runs back to the POE switch so that the POE switch powers your access points that are powered off of it if the access points are POE.

There are also devices called POE power injectors which work in series with Non-POE Network connections and inject the power to the normally unused pairs leading to the device that is powered over POE if the devices do not come with a way to be powered other than POE. Some devices come with choice of using a wall adapter to power the device or use of POE connection instead. *Also POE power comes in a variety of voltages, so if you were to go the route of power injection, you need to know the voltage and wattage that the devices operate at and get proper power injectors. *This method of power injectors cost more than running Cat5 or Cat6 cable back to the switch unless you already have these handy.

These splitters that I shared with you are best for normal Non-POE networking to run 2 network connections half duplex through each single Cat5 or Cat6 cable.  Ok, let me throw another idea at you. Could I use a WiFi repeater ? And what is the difference between a repeater and a WiFi extender ?
