Solve : Linksys wireless n network usb question.? |
Answer» I'm thinking of buying it for my computer to get a wifi access point to be able to use my nintendo 3ds online. Now the router that is in the living room is wired and not wireless. The QUESTION is can i get wireless in my room with just buying the network usb adapter for my computer and using the virtual router software online that works LIKE you have a wireless router but virtual. Or would that still not work.If you refer to a desktop wired and using a USB wireless adapter to share or create a hotspot, try the free version of Connectify http://www.connectify.me/ My only EXPERIENCE with Connectify is my laptop is directly wired and then the built-in wifi adapter is broadcasting the created PASSWORD protected SSID to share wireless in range. |

Solve : wifi ipod/home pc/ipad trouble? |
Answer» Hi I have ipod/ipad/samsung galaxy phone and windows 7 pc, I have wifi on all these devices but hve trouble using Facebook and all of the divices. Both of the phones can connect when using the 3 or 4g network with wifi disabled but will randomly log into facebook. My computer is similar it logged on this morning but then when i clicked a link WITHIN facebook the page it says unable to load page. My daughter ipod 5 does the same but also youtube wont open either. I am pretty sure it is a wifi issue but DIDNT want to buy a new router for no reason. Any help much appreiciated. ...Netflix and Comcast have come to an agreement. Netflix now has a direct CONNECTION to Comcast’s network (peering), and Comcast users should see much improved service as a result. Money changed hands, but no exact figures were made public. That implies that Comcast might have made Netflix service less reliable . Of course, that may not be your problem. But it shows that many think the problems are with the policy adopted by the ISP, not the PC or OS. The best I can offer is you keep talking with your ISP. |

Solve : networking win 7 don't understand ?? |
Answer» I have win 7 on desktop and laptop my computers are "joined" I can see my desktop on my laptop but I can't "see" my files on my laptop from the desktop, In the advanced sharing options I see that my network discovery is turned off, ok, now when I turn it back on and click save changes ... it doesn't " save" and so I am thinking some services are turned off what services are needed to "see" my files on my desktop, and I do have password protected on, anyway I really would like some HELP on this thanks in advance ps what is the "user name" when I have the promp for that I am thinking it is somthink like "me-pc or somthing like that or is it \\me-pc" the user name has me stumpted I can't find what it supposed to be and the network password I have.Windows networking is, at its best, frustrating. Here is one way to simply things. How could that possibly simplify things? Seems like it complicates things to me.I think I have it fixed now (I Hope) I did have some services disabled that kept me from having network discovery on, I have since renabled them and so far so good, thanks for help!, I am trying to learn this networking thing, it is a challange to say the least. I if I have any more issues I will be back so I won't close this now Use of names HELPS. You can locate another computer my its name by user name. Once you do that, Windows 'remembers' who is on the network. Why would you turn off any default services? I turned off certain services I didn't need at the time for performance for example I wasn't using networking so I turned off services connected to that, I didn't turn them "off" I set them to manual startup, I had a pc world article about it that used. I GUESS the user name thing is a mystery to me because the prompt keeps coming up that asks for user name and password and it doesn't work so I think I enter wrong user name for example I use sam-pc for user name is that what I put in the user name? or is it \\sam-pc? anyway I restarted my pc today and still am having problems seeing other computer I keep getting the password prompt even though my computer shows in the homegroup list, You cam do a search for other computers on the network. By name of user or name of PC. BTW: You misunderstand that you must manually turn on sharing on specific folders. Right? General video for Windows 7 at home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUWHuxb9SfA This differs from what you do on Windows XP, but it does about the same thing. |

Solve : can't access to some webs no matter diff. browsers with diff. devices? |
Answer» Hi everyone Hi everyoneThis is due mostly to just two things: 1. The websites are overloaded with tragic and can not respond. 2. The web sites on on a 'blacklist' that your local authority does not allow. Example: Some contrives band any web site that ever has pornographic material http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/porn-sites-banned-in-India Thanks for your answer but I think this is not the case. Some of them may be overloaded but some of them are not I know for sure. Besides many of the webs im trying to access are educational sites, none CONTENTS any doggy materials. What's funny is those crappy stuff sites are accessible for me though.Check and see if others have the same problems. Also, here is what has happened to me. I got blocked! I failed to log into a web that requires a password. After 3 times, it locked me out forever. To get around the block, use a proxy. Here is a list. http://www.xroxy.com/proxy-country-CA.htm Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 18, 2014, 08:56:30 PM To get around the block, use a proxy. You of all people should know that giving information on how to bypass BLOCKS and restrictions is completely against the rules here.camerongray, it is not clear why the OP was being blocked. Use of a proxy is a useful tool when there is a a dispute with a site blocking your iP. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 19, 2014, 08:43:42 AM camerongray, it is not clear why the OP was being blocked. That doesn't really matter. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 19, 2014, 08:43:42 AM camerongray, it is not clear why the OP was being blocked. And as a proxy can be used for evading INTENTIONAL blocks on websites, it is not allowed to be discussed here. If it is not clear why they are being blocked then that is all the more reason not to advise proxies. I tried my hubby's pc to access those sites n it worked for his pc. His pc use enthernet line and all my devices use wifi. Is there sth wrong with my wifi? Havent change any setyings lately and also restart the moderm also didnt help.Using another computer on another service will confirm that there is some kind of block. As has been mentioned, we are not too tell people how to undo the block. The block may be near or far away. Wed don't kn ow why you are blocked. Besides, if I knew and I told you, I would have to kill you. You all know that is a joke - Right? |

Solve : Website works at work, not home? |
Answer» I hope this is the right section to ask this question in. I'm a big newbie. We just got Google Fiber the day or two before this started happening. Sounds like the ISP may be blocking it or they have some sort of issue between them and their backbone to the internet. Some ISPs have been playing games with data types behind the scenes to throttle stuff down and block some stuff.Thank you. I've contacted them twice, but they don't seem to know what they're doing. What should I say to them? Should I say, "Can we see if the ISP is blocking one of my webpages?"Please let the forum know more about your ISP. Especially your region. Are yhou in Europe? ASIA? Canada? In some regions, like the UK, a few music sites are banned by some of the the local Internet Service Providers. Would that apply to you? Quote A list of sites blockedIt says my ISP is Google Fiber Inc. And it is based out of Mountain View, California, United States. I live in Utah, United States. Thanks for your guy's help. It could have been my ISP mixed with this app. I just changed to a new app and it's good. Good to hear you found the solution =) |

Solve : Cannot connect to the internet unless wireless connection is named "network 2"? |
Answer» I'm running Windows 8 Ultimate 64bit. My internet dropped at around 6:30pm GMT today, and has been down ever since. I normally use a WIRED connection, but I also own a USB wireless adapter. Trying this adapter also didn't work, and the wireless connection to my phone couldn't get internet access either. |

Solve : None of my internet browsers are loading past the home page in windows 7?? |
| Answer» LOADING circle keeps spinning and I have internet connection. FIRE fox comes to the HOME screen with the logo, but internet explorer goes to a blank page with address bar. I can't navigate to any website in any browser. I've ran avast boot time scan, malwarebytes and cccleaner and tdss killer. I've done a clean boot of the system. I've done system restore. I ran sfc scannow, which some problems that were detected it couldn't fix. I've ran disk clean up, which worked for a couple minutes, than the internet stopped running. I've done safe mode with networking and gone into network and sharing center and changed the preferred dns because someone on yahoo ANSWERS suggested that, but still nothing. What can I do now? I have a gateway e5700, intel Pentium processor, which I've had for several years. The internet and computer were working perfectly 2 days ago. Sometimes, windows explorer times out, and at first I couldn't even open network and sharing center, but clean boot seems to fix explorer problems, but not the internet. I've done the clean boot in msconfig. What do I do now? I'm familiar with computers, mediocre knowledge, but I'm no expert. And, I forgot to tell you, that I used to have this broadband network LISTED in network and sharing center, but that icon is not there any more. I just have LAN network. It says I have internet access on the computer. I've cleaned my cache and resetted each browser and routers too. This has been going on for a couple of days. | |

Solve : Laptops dropping wifi, help!? |
Answer» I have AT&T Uverse (their fastest package) and I have a desktop computer that is hardwired to the router and three laptops THROUGHOUT the house that are connected by wifi (as well as two ipods, one PS4 and one PS3 which are only connected when they're on). Aside from the fact that the wifi signal was sometimes weaker on the second floor (farthest from the router), there have not been any problems since it was installed last September. This past Friday the internet cut out completely for a few minutes, when I went to check the router and all the lights were blinking as though it was resetting. Since then the laptops have been periodically disconnecting (I would have to manually select and reconnect), but I never lose the internet on the hardwired desktop. If it was HAPPENING with one laptop only, I would assume it was a problem with that specific machine, but it happens with all three. The only recent CHANGE has been the PS4, I got it and set it up in the early afternoon on Friday, and it was later that evening that the internet cut out, but that's just a coincidence, right? Besides, this problem happens even with the PS4 off. Any suggestions?AT&T is aware of issues with their services. You have to call their 800 number and speak to a technician. Specifically, they had known issues and ways to fix the problem without sending out new EQUIPMENT. Unless really necessary. The only recent change has been the PS4Yes, that can make the difference. Talk to the technician. And yes, I did read you post and the PS4 can make a difference even when it is off. The addition of another device logs another entry in a table the router has. The entry is still there when the device is off. Talk to the technician.Talked to AT&T (which always feels like you're talking to someone reading from script while they do their best not to pay attention to anything you're saying) and after being on the phone for almost 40 minutes, she said, 'OK, so we're going to go ahead and send you a new router because the hardline signal is OK, but it seems to be dropping the wifi, is that what you said?' So in other words, she couldn't figure out the problem and is just sending me a new MODEM since I complained that my laptops are losing their wifi connection. Hope that fixes the problem, but I have my doubts...Yeah, it is sometimes like that. You have to work with them and they will come around and help you. the old saying is: The squeaky wheel gets the grease.. |

Solve : Home Network Keeps Resetting? |
Answer» Windows Specifications but whenever I try to connect through cable my home network keeps resseting everytime I start my computer and then I am having problems with my broadband connection because it sometimes does not recognize my username and password.Thank you guys for your ASSISTANCE! It only happens when I go to my neighbour and attempt to connect VIA cable. Solve : Using mobile 3G USB Modem and want to network - tell me how?? |
Answer» Hi I have recently purchased a Laptop with Win 8 on it, and my ISP Dodo sent me a new usb modum to run with this. I still have a desktop running XP, and to use the internet on that - I have to swap my sim card from new mobile usb to the old one. I would really like to have both machines run of one modum, is there a way of doing this?First thing you'll have to do is speak to your ISP - Most providers that I have seen do not allow doing this. There are a few ways of doing this. First of all is to setup internet connection sharing so that the laptop connects to the internet via the USB modem then SHARES the connection with the desktop. Another way, if the desktop has wifi abilities, is to install SOFTWARE like http://www.connectify.me/hotspot/ which would allow the desktop to connect to the laptop via wifi. Another way would be to find a compatible broadband router that would accept the USB modem you have and create a hotspot (and allow wired connections as well) that both the laptop and desktop could connect to. Here's one example: http://cradlepoint.com/products/small-business-home-office-routers/mbr95-wireless-4g-3g-router. You would need to determine if it is compatible with your particular modem. |

Solve : disabling push button config method pop ups (protected wifi)? |
Answer» https://www.dropbox.com/s/3sx0nue9sgvd4w2/wifi.png I seem to be getting this option pop up on my laptop frequenty since I reformatted. I tried changing my wifi setup from WPA/WPA2-PSK (MIXED Mode) to just WPA2-PSK (AES) but it still persits. I have other PC's using this router however none of them ENCOUNTER this error. (I dont want to use WEP) It's anonying because during this time that it loads it cuts off my connection to the router for about 60 SECONDS or so. Is there a way for me to disable this? Or *censored* just try to fix it so it accepts the PBC method (even if I let it fully complete it still pops up anywhere between 5mins to an hour at a time) - after it loads and finishes 2mins later the connection is back online again. I use a Sagemcom [email protected] router provided by my PROVIDER (Sky). Been having this issue for a year on my laptop but I've never had to use it as frequently until now since my desktop crashed and building a new one. I only use the above single router/modem. Any help or why this is happening WOULD be appreciated. |

Solve : Connected to internet, but can't access anything? |
Answer» I recently tried to use my OLD laptop, and am having issues connecting to my wireless network. My WIFI card is installed correctly AFAIK, as I can search for my network and connect to it. When connected, I get an an average speed of 54 MBPS, and some minor usage while the system is idle (277 packets sent, 11 recieved currently). None of my web browsers work though, or any other software. Disabling the firewall does nothing, antivirus is disabled for now, and a full malwarebytes scan came back clean. I have spent the last 5 hours or so on google with no luck. Below is a list of all the CHANGES I have made. Any help and/or suggestions are appreciated! |

Solve : Wifi Connection - MBPS - Lenovo - Broadcom? |
Answer» I recently purchased a Windows 8 - Lenovo Laptop (It arrived yesterday.). I have been experiencing MBPS drops all day. It goes from 72 MBPS to 5.5 MPS and a few places inbetween. I have 4 out of 5 bars most of the time. It does drop down to 3 out of 5 sometimes. The MBPS sometimes goes back up, but I have had to restart my computer to fix the problem a few times.
The Xbox 360 was having some connection issues earlier and so was one of the other laptops. I would have edited this into the previous post, but I couldn't seem to find a PLACE to do it. Apparently the Modem I have isn't compatible with Windows 8. Is there anything that I can do?In my thinking, a consumer should never have to troubleshoot a new computer. Is it true that you began to have issues only after you started to use the new laptop? You could reason that the new computer is the problem. And yes, that indeed does happen. I strongly commend returning the computer to the store whee your bought it. Maybe they will exchange it for the same model. That could fix the problem. When a wireless device malfunctions, it can interfered with other devices in the same area. This has been documented elsewhere. The test is to try another device of the same type and model. But with a laptop that means another laptop. The wireless transponder is not a removable thing. For other ideas, please do report what you have tried. I am having my Internet Provider come out tomorrow to see if getting a different modem would help the problem because the one I have is not Windows 8/8/1 compatible. Could that not be the problem? Also, If that doesn't work I will return it and get another laptop to see if that changes anything. I've tried updating different drivers, using the Google Public DNS, both of which still don't help the problem with the Mbps dropping from 72 to 5.5.I am assuming that the problem is only with my windows 8.1 laptop and not the others because there was a storm earlier and now the other laptops are all fine and this laptop is the only one that is having connection problems and mbps problems. Quote from: Sam64Delp on February 21, 2014, 08:35:52 PM I am assuming that the problem is only with my windows 8.1 laptop and not the others because there was a storm earlier and now the other laptops are all fine and this laptop is the only one that is having connection problems and mbps problems.Wrong! The modem does not have to interact with Windows 8. The modem connects to the router -Right? But the wireless router does interact with Windows 8. You can do the windows 8 network setup again and see if that helps. However, I think you have a problem with the wireless module inside the laptop. Sometimes they do come from the factory defective. The fact that the bother machines work good would suggest this. Can y0u disable the wireless module in the laptop? Is so, try using any BUDGET wireless USB adapter. Windows 8 will work fine with most of them. Even the cheap ones can do 54 Mbps. Amazon has some for under $20 that work with any version of Windows. I really think it is the wireless module in the laptop, not the router or modem or windows 8. I would say that you are right about the wireless module, but one of the other laptops in the HOUSE has apparently been having the same issues. It's a windows 7 and I had these two computers side by side and when one isn't working the other isn't either, so I don't think it is an issue with the laptops, it might be an issue with the router or modem. Quote I had these two computers side by side and when one isn't working the other isn't either,That is against the rules of common sense. Both computers have wireless transponders and they wail mutually interference with each other. Wireless computers should be kept at least 6 fest (two meters) apart. Moreover, if one laptop has a FLAWED wireless module it can interfere with anything in the house. Like a XBox or PlayStation as will as a PC, laptop or tablet. And yes, a defective wireless module can even mess a cell phone, which has different frequencies. So I strongly recommend you verify that new PC is normal. Apparently it is not. New computers, or anything electronic, has a known infant mortality issue. Lower QC keeps the cost down and really annoys the consumer. BTW: Even big companies have got into trouble with the FCC for not sticking to the rules for radio emissions of electronic devices,. It happens. Interference with wireless devices can be a serous issue. Look here at a recent problem: LA building's lights interfere with cellular network, FCC says No, I am not saying your mew laptop is stopping cell calls. I sited the above to show that it does happen even when you think would t can not be. http://forums.techguy.org/networking/1120486-windows-8-1-connection-issues.html#post8865785 ^-- This had more detail on my issue and more things about it. I am going to end up sending up my laptop back the day after tomorrow to see if that will fix it. I'll come back after I get it back. Solve : FTP working over wan but not lan? |
Answer» Hey there GUYS and gals. I'm trying to set up an ftp server using the filezilla server software. While I've been able to ACCESS the server through the internet so far I have not been able to do so over lan. I've tried accessing it with its firewall software turned off but I can't seem to connect to it over lan.Annnnnnnnnnnd I'm an idiot. I'm not too familiar with dd-wrt. A few weeks ago I made a virtual wireless interface and APPARENTLY it is not connected with lan. I suppose you should delete this, or leave it on the off chance someone else does something that dumb.Well I thought it might be a NAT Loopback issue. Many older routers did not have this feature. Since you don't have any internal DNS resolution the DNS is being provided by your DNS or Domain name provider. So it has to go out and come back in to your network. Also known as loopback. What I did to get around this was edit my hosts file on each computer to associate the LAN IP address with the domain name. But who needs FTP on a local network? Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 18, 2014, 09:34:05 PM But who needs FTP on a local network?Come work for me. That is the only WAY to get files on and off our mainframe. |

Solve : Getting a camera system's DVR accessible by remote connections.? |
Answer» Hey guys. I've got a QSEE brand camera system and I've hooked everything up fine. To my dismay I found that the ISP of my dad's shop doesn't allow port forwarding(fail), so I can't forward port 85 to access the DVR from home. They told me that instead of forwarding they could give us a set of static IP's and that would take care of the problem. To my dismay I found that the ISP of my dad's shop doesn't allow port forwarding(fail) Generally the ISP will block certain ports, but never heard of an ISP blocking port forwarding as for the only way to do this would be if they had admin controls of the router you are using that are blocked out of configuring. Generally when an ISP has a specific port blocked, you can get around this by using a different port number that is not blocked and then add the port forwarding in your router to accept communications to be directed at a static IP of a system or device you have that is at that address in which the communications are passed through an alternate port. BUT for this to work you also need to be able to change the port on the system or device that is listening so that it matches up with the alternate port forwarding port number. Also the other device(s) elsewhere will need to know to communicate at this other specific port such as I have used port 8077, 8078, and 8079 before for FTP which my ISP was blocking the commonly used ports for FTP and I was able to get around their FTP roadblock. However, most ISPs also have in fine PRINT under the rules and regulations of your plan that circumventing their content blockers is a violation of the service agreement and they could sever the service based on this violation. However I have yet to hear of ISPs who have been able to track down FTP servers on alternate ports. I still run FTP on alternate ports and they havent shut me down yet and its been going for 6 years with no problems. My FTP is mainly for remote access to data that I store on the FTP server which is a low power consumption laptop that runs 24/7/365 with its display cover closed. Try using port 8077 instead of port 85 which I know is not blocked by many ISP's and make sure the router had the port forwarding configured for this port for this static IP. Quote They told me that instead of forwarding they could give us a set of static IP's and that would take care of the problem Having a static IP is nice because then you don't have to worry about dynamic DNS (the external IP will stay the same), but that does not eliminate the problem of port forwarding. You will still need to port forward. Like the other poster said, try configuring it with a high port number like 8077 and then forward that. It should work. There is also a nice tool: http://canyouseeme.org/Thanks for the tips, I'll try that stuff out when I go down tomorrow and will post what's happened. And, just so that you know, his ISP is ridiculous. They supply a modem that's completely locked down, no editting of any settings and most ports are blocked(hopefully not 8077 like you said). |

Solve : Theoretical question about domain registration? |
Answer» I've always wondered, but NEVER bothered to ask, why you can't register your own domain name for free if you have a DNS server. What else is required? It seems very corrupt that only certain companies can actually do this. I don't KNOW much about how domain servers work; just the general idea. Quote from: Linux711 on February 14, 2014, 06:43:43 PM I've always wondered, but never bothered to ask, why you can't register your own domain name for free if you have a DNS server. You can. But no top-level DNS servers will use it as an authoritative name server. DNS queries are run against root servers. Quote It seems very corrupt that only certain companies can actually do this. Not really. We don't actually buy domain names- you rent them from a registrar. The price you pay is for the registrar to create and maintain that CNAME record as well as the appropriate fees the ICANN imposes on it. If anybody was able to create their own DNS server, there would be no way to know where Domains actually lead. Different Domain name servers will point to different IP Addresses based entirely on the whim of the owner of the server. the ICANN ensures that there is a STANDARD agreement amongst all authoritive Domain Name Servers about where domains lead. Linux711, It is a matter of fairness for all, not just you. You can buy a registrar. Do you have the money? But a registrar can not sign a name that is already used. CNAME is the group that KEEPS track of domain names. It should be obvious that you can not have duplicate names in the system. Otherwise it could not be the Wold Wilde Web. Also, you can buy a small country and own all the domains of that country. Just declare martial law and get the citizens to back up the coup. This might help. Some Top Level Domain suffixes are seldom used. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Internet_top-level_domains You might want to buy Norfolk Island. It has only 2500 people in 35 sq kilometers. Offer them 400 million US and see if they go for it. Then you can have you rown domains. But thou may want an low cost alternative. http://www.dnjournal.com/articles/companies/myrebel.htm <Sorry if I offended the people of Norfolk Island> |

Solve : Bottle necked Internet Speed? |
Answer» So I built a computer 2 summers ago. It's GREAT and works perfectly except the internet speed is bottle necked to about half of the internet speed I pay for. I know it's something with the computer because I've had 2 different internet providers at TWO different locations both of which I've experienced slower internet speeds than my roommates. I've used different ETHERNET cables as well. I don't use wifi on my computer but I do for my ps3 (the same CONNECTION as the land line) which turns out to actually be faster than my pc directly connected to the router. The only conclusion I've come to is that my motherboard might be faulty or drivers not up to date. I personally didn't put the PC together I had someone do it for me. I have replaced the RAM from 4gb to 16gb THOUGH. I would really like to figure out what is causing this problem. |

Solve : Can I use the modem from one isp on another? |
Answer» So my router is havng problems and i have a modem/router from my old isp. I tried to hook it up and there was no internet. What did i do wrong? Everything was plugged in and turned on. The wifi was working but the internet light wasnt solid so there was no actual internet connection through the modem.Assuming the modem is compatible with your new ISP's system, they NEED to enter and authorize the MAC address of the modem.i don't know too much about internet stuff but i FOUND with this problem if the email the ISP gives you is locked into the modem you can't change it. for example [email protected], if the "optusnet.com" bit is greyed out(doesn't let you change it) and not changeable, no you cant use it with a new ISPhuh? You can use any email address with any modem.my old modem was locked to optus. So it had optusnet.com locked in so all you could change was the user name but not the IPS name. so for example [email protected], the modem would only let you change someone123 but it would not let you change the optusnet.com bit.You can access any and all email accounts from any modem. Let's move on. |

Solve : Setting up Desktop to use my home wireless? |
Answer» I recently purchased a used HP Desktop from work the was part of a workgroup. It has Windows XP Professional on it. I would like to know how to get on the internet on this computer using my current home wireless network. No luck so far. THANKS for any help you can give me.Does this computer have a wireless adapter in it? Many don't. If you have the full model of it, post it here, and we can at least then see if it came with a wireless card as standard. Rear: 6 USB 2.0, 1 VGA, 1 DVI-D, audio in/out, 1 microphone, 1 serial, 1 parallel, 2 PS/2, 1 RJ-45; Front: 2 USB 2.0 headphone and microphonBut it has lots of ports. The RJ-45 is a standard Ethernet. Any of the USB ports can be used with a cheap wireless adapter. Quote ...from AmazonNotice a newer is cheaper than the old! A USB wireless adapter like the one linked above would be the quickest and easiest way to get your PC working on wireless, then, as your PC currently doesn't have that feature. Bear in mind that a physically small adapter like that may not have great signal, so if you're planning to have it a little way away from the router, you may want to consider a model with an antenna you can see, as you're likely to get a better signal.Thank you both so much for your help. |

Solve : Trying to network windows 7 and vista, with vista as the server.? |
Answer» I am a PA for a Mary Kay consultant, and we have a problem. Her laptop runs vista, mine runs windows 7. Last week we were trying to create a network so that I can access her CLIENT information. She uses Boulevard, and was given instructions on how to set up the network. Everything went fine, until I tried to log into the network. I can see her computer, but when I try to log on, it asks for a password, but her computer isn't set up to need a password. We tried setting a password on her laptop, but that password was rejected. I know vista doesn't have a homegroup, so I'm not sure what to do next. Sharing between Vista and Windows 7[...from the link above] You may try to again setup networking again on both computers. A restart is needed. Both her computers should have a password for long in, even if only one user. Set both computers to the MSHOME group. Windows networking can work as a pair-to peer mode. You need to set sharing on a few directories on both computers. EDOT: When using Windows network is is not a good idea to share the whole system drive. Instead, create a new portion that has files of mutual interest. That shall be a data PARTITION for non-system files. Otherwise, set only a limited few folders for shrinking to avoid future security issues. |

Solve : how can I configure my internet connection PPTP???? |
Answer» Long story short I got a new router from my ISP they said I should be able to plug it in and it would work I tried that and it did not work I bought a Belkin router to increase my signal strength and it seemed to not work either it appear to change the name of my connection and I am currently running on a PPTP connection but for some reason it will not work I was told that I am supposed to connect using my username and password on a PPTP connection for my ISP I do not know what else to do and I cannot figure out how to get this internet to work I can't even get dial up speeds but when I do connect it is very little to none. I assume part of it has something to do with me changing the name of my internet connection I changed it and they said absolutely do not change the name of it because it will make it so I cannot connect but then I changed it back and nothing changed I only changed the name as a last resort and all I did was cap the first LETTER which I guess is enough for it not to connect so sense then I put it back and it STILL WONT connect. Plz help I need to figure out my website hosting and why they are ripping me off plus check email accounts. Thanks! After looking at your post, my gut tells me your are making this too hard. Your ISP should provide you will the service you want. You should not have to buy more equipment. ... to increase my signal strength...What does that mean? Why do you need more signal strength? Using PPP has nothing to do with signal strength. Unless you have DONE this all before, you should let the ISP setup your modem and router for your computer. EDIT: What I want to say is that it is getting harder to get free help for an ISP or anybody else. Except a few places. LIKE this forum. If you bought the router from the nISP, they can set it up by remote control. |

Solve : I need with net connection? |

Answer» Oh Lord - where to start. Hi guys, I have burdened you guys for a long time, but not in this forum. I run two WIN 7 machines, 1 laptop, 1 desktop, both 32 bit Os's now. I enjoyed file sharing fine until I upgraded the laptop from 64 bit to 32. From that point on I can't get connected to the network on the laptop. Of course the desktop is the host. I'm sure the problem is in the laptop software. Clicking on the icon on the laptop gets "no connections are available", "open network and sharing CENTER". The host computer is not sleeping. |

Solve : Internet Connection Confilct? |
Answer» GOOD day! Hey, I just wanna ask for help about my internet connection. Sometimes my internet speed is fast but most of the time, it doesn't LOAD any web pages completely. I think I have a problem with my DNS Server or IP Address, but all of these are set to "Obtain Automatically" and I don't have any idea on solving this problem. My browser is Google Chrome, the updated version. Actually I don't have a problem with my computer, just my internet connection or router. My router's Linksys Cisco E1200 with the latest firmware. Please help, thank you!You said: Quote Sometimes my internet speed is fast...That means your equipment does work good and DNS is not the issue. DNS allures bring up an error message. And you sent on to say that often it is slow and does not load fully. This would more likely be a problem with your provider. This can happen in DSL nor cable service. Have you talked to tech support with your local service provider?I'd contact your ISP and have them perform a loopback test to verify that the connection between you and your ISP is good. They will be able to see signal strength and problems should be detected if its a Home Modem to ISP issue. Other things that can cause problems are if other users are connected and eating up massive amounts of bandwidth downloading and or streaming video at the same time etc. * I ENDED up setting up a QoS configuration in my router that I flashed with DD-WRT so that no one device can choke off adequate bandwidth to other devices. I also dedicated an allocation of bandwidth to the Vonage VoIP hardware when the phone is in use and at the same time 2 systems are on netflix etc. I would also perform a ping test between your local hardware and outbound and look for problems. open command shell by entering CMD at start -> Run or Start -> Search Programs and Files and enter ipconfig This will show info, now take the gateway IP and ping that such as PING 192.168.1.1 and verify that it has fast speed in low ms response time and is not 100ms or greater or lost pings. Next now that you KNOW your local network at home is good ( hopefully ), you ping outbound such as at PING www.google.com -t The -t will create a persistant ping so it will keep pinging until ended by CTRL + C orclosing the shell window. But the response times on a healthy connection to the internet with no one else eating up bandwidth should be less than 200ms during a busy part of the day when everyone is hitting google to as low as around 20ms when most people are sleeping etc. * This is one reason why I enjoy the internet at night better than during the day, its faster with less traffic conjestion. * If you see lost ping packets such as No Response and numbers in ms that are high and jumping around then you have a problem and its outboard to the ISP which is connected to the site such as Google through a backbone to the internet. If all looks well, but the system is STILL misbehaving then its a local problem with the computer itself. As far as DNS goes, I do not use the DNS provided by my ISP, as for it lags ( Comcast ) and so I use OpenDNS instead and have my router configured to use one of 2 DNS servers through OpenDNS and have had no problems with that free DNS service. |

Solve : Symbol WS2000 Switch with WSAP 5110 Access Points? |
Answer» I 've got a couple of questions for anyone that knows this system. We currently have this system in my kids school. We want to add more access points throughout the school. Do the access points have to be homeruns..? Also, can you split the Cat5 going from the switch to go to 2 access points...? I'm guessing no, but wanted to ask anyway. If they have to be homeruns, than how would I add more access points...? Since it only has 4 available points, would I need another switch to have more access points...? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I see this WSAP 5110 are really cheap second hand. Quote Also, can you split the Cat5 going from the switch to go to 2 access points...? Yes you can thru a SINGLE Cat5 Cable that is half duplex. I used two Y splitters one at each end of a 75ft Cat5 run to avoid having to run another cable through a tight crawl space. There are 8 wires ( 4 pairs ) in each Cat5 cable and only 2 pairs are used with half duplex which is what most network devices run on unless you have servers that are full duplex etc. This half duplex allows for you to run 2 nodes off of a single cable by splitting the 2 pairs of 4 wires. * Your switch will have to have an available port to take 2 patch cables though, so it would be 2 patch cables to the Y splitter that joins and combines the 2 network connections over a single Cat5 cable ( using all pairs ), and then at the other end of the cable another Y splitter that actually splits what was combined initially back out to the 2 network connections back to the switch. And this acts LIKE 2 x half duplex network homeruns from the main switch outwards over a single cat5 cable. Here are the Y-Splitters that I am using which I bought through Cyberguys... also note that I also needed to add a double ended female Cat5e couplers to allow the 2 male ends, male end of Cable and male end of Y adapter to connect. I got the couplers cheap off of amazon. I was able to do this for like $22 total and was way better than crawling on dirt under home in crawl space with cobwebs and with like 18" of clearance in tight places. http://www.cyberguys.com/product-details/?productid=6407&sk=MC71419&gclid=CN3D-4f-hbsCFUdhfgodqDoAng In any wireless setup, i would suggest as many home runs as you can get, as for a dedicated home run for each device will give the best performance while if you have a bunch acting as repeaters off of another with a home run, if you have lots of traffic it will come to a crawl if for example 1 or 2 people are streaming content on the wifi such as a PBS Kids video etc. With the Y adapters you can minimize how many runs to home and cut the home runs in half if you form a T at the Y connection and send an access point in opposite directions such as 1 in every corner of the school, so you have 2 home runs of which each home run is Y split at both ends to make 2 dedicated network connections per home run, so you would have all corners of building covered and only 2 home runs. * Switch would need to have 4 ports for 4 dedicated connections over 2 homerun cables for 4 devices with dedicated half duplex. ** As far as familiarity with this specific switch and access points, I have not worked with these specific models but have worked with Symbol brand network devices before with Point of Sale Wireless communications. Thanks ! That makes a lot of SENSE and helps me a lot ! I have the access points already ran. So I would need to go into a all female splitter(i think). I already have the cat5 cables run to the access points, so I would need to go into a female than have 2 cat5 cables coming out to go to the two access points... Does that make sense,...? If so, can you suggest good brand for all female spliter...?I havent found a all female Y adapter yet. I ended up just going the route of the Y adapter in the link that I shared and buying cheap double ended female couplers for like $2.49 each + shipping ( one at each end of single cat5 used as 2 half duplex network connections ) , which make for an all female Y. I have seen people also pull a single Cat5e cable before and punch the pairs into 2 x RJ45's which lock into the outlet covers making for 2 x half duplex connections and not needing to use the Y and the coupler. BUT.. This has to be set up as 2 punch downs at the rack/patch panel or another wall in building which is used to patch 2 connections over a single cat5 cable. But my home was built in 1973 and I owned it since 1994 and so I had to modernize it myself and took the easier/cheaper path of drilling a 3/8" hole in floor of livingroom where the cable and broadband modem is and then running 75ft of Cat5e under home to bedroom with 3/8" hole to snake the cable back up into home at far end of home where I have all my network hardware and most systems. I then have a Y at both ends of this single 75ft run of Cat5e and I am essentially passing the Cable modems connection 75 ft to my main router and then a patch cable out of router goes into the other end of the Y and sends the protected behind firewall + DHCP etc to the available connection at the Y in livingroom, where I have an 8-port switch and have PS3, HTPC, and Bluray Streaming Player etc connected to that 8-port switch. This strange config has worked flawless for about 3 years with no problems with speeds as fast as 25mbps downloads and 5mbps uploads as well as 100mbps between devices in livingroom and bedroom at half duplex. Below is a quick MSPAINT sketch showing my use of these. * Note: There is a very small amount of latency added when adding a switch to a router, but its not noticable between direct connection to router and using a connection of off 8-port Netgear switches. [recovering disk space, attachment DELETED by admin]On the WS 2000' there are only 4 ports for POE and the access points (WSAP-5110) need to be setup or programmed. When I try to add\split a new one, it will not work. What am I doing wrong ?POE = Power Over Ethernet.... This uses the normally unused 2 pairs for transfer of power to remote network devices that are powered via the same CAT5 or Cat6 cable that they communicate on. This splitter will not power POE devices at the opposite end that require power because all pairs are in use for data, with none available for power. I wasn't aware that you were using POE with this setup and appologize for not asking before hand. With the splitters you would need each access point powered independently vs off of the POE power. The best and cheapest solution for this setup with POE is probably unfortunately running 4 home runs back to the POE switch so that the POE switch powers your access points that are powered off of it if the access points are POE. There are also devices called POE power injectors which work in series with Non-POE Network connections and inject the power to the normally unused pairs leading to the device that is powered over POE if the devices do not come with a way to be powered other than POE. Some devices come with choice of using a wall adapter to power the device or use of POE connection instead. *Also POE power comes in a variety of voltages, so if you were to go the route of power injection, you need to know the voltage and wattage that the devices operate at and get proper power injectors. *This method of power injectors cost more than running Cat5 or Cat6 cable back to the switch unless you already have these handy. These splitters that I shared with you are best for normal Non-POE networking to run 2 network connections half duplex through each single Cat5 or Cat6 cable. Ok, let me throw another idea at you. Could I use a WiFi repeater ? And what is the difference between a repeater and a WiFi extender ? |
