Solve : Connect to Wireless with SSID Broadcast Disabled?

Answer» HELLO:

I have a wireless ROUTER that I use at home for my laptop running xp.  I disabled the ssid for security.  I understand there's a way to still CONNECT to the wap without the ssid broadcast, but I can't figure it out.  My laptop does not SEE the wap.  Is there something in setup I may be missing?Hi,

Your laptop won't be able to PICKUP your wireless connection automatically, but you can manually setup your wireless connection and enter the SSID of the router.  If you haven't changed the SSID, it should be on your router somewhere.

Solve : Laptop on work Domain, need basic home networking capabilities?

Answer»

Firstly, hi!
I USED to be a member here under another name (which I have long forgotten) so this isn't my first ever post. It is however my first post in a long while.

I have a laptop which is part of a domain at work, but mostly lives at home. I would like to set up basic file and printer sharing. I have looked into this myself for the last hour or so. Earlier I was about to simply change "domain" to "workgroup" in the computer name bit. However, as my finger hovered, poised over the mouse button I was suddenly overcome with an ominous feeling of dread, and sensed the lurking presence of an almost unspeakable evil.  Actually, I made the last bit up. I'm guessing it really isn't a GOOD idea though...

We have 2 computers. ONE is the aforementioned laptop, the other one isn't (upstairs, home desktop). Both connect wirelessly to the internet thru Sky's own netgear router. The printer I would like to be able to share is connected to the home PC.

At the MOMENT there isn't any sort of network infrastructure in place. The upstairs comp may, or may not, be littered with the remnants of previous disastrous attempts at networking (I can't really remember)

I have gone on too long; in the event that this thread recieves any replies I will be happy to provide additional info.

Thanks in advance

Well since your post made me chuckle a few times with your funny remarks I will reply to it.

In your laptop at the login screen you have 3 fields. They are username, password and domain. At work you normally would type your assigned user, pass & your company's domain name. You probably do that at home too. However, I would suggest that you keep you login to your local pc when at home. So at the login screen you would select for domain "YourPCname (this computer)" option. For the login name you may need to get one created since the one you use for the domain may not exist as a local user. Then you can assign the local user account to the workgroup that your home pc is in without affecting the domain part. After that it is just a matter of sharing out your printer. The best bet for you would be to contact your IT person at work and discuss this with them. Since you are using a laptop provided by your employer there may be restrictions in place KEEPING you from being able to do what you want.

I also have a company provided laptop that I also use at home. Due to company policy concerning security of company information that may be on my laptop I had to get permission to be able to use my computer online while at home.

So before you start following advise on how to be able to network this machine at home it would be good to check with you company IT department. Additionally they should be able to give you all the assistance you need.

Solve : hacking protection?

Answer»

Hi, for hacking protection i have GOOGLED a website :

http://www.fyxm.net/IP-Anonymizer-74766.html

and found that IP anonymizer tool HELP to protect privacy.
I want to know is it safe to download?
Another thing is the features it covers is:

IP Anonymizer 3.5 Features:

· Clear Internet History

· Clear Typed URL

· Clear Temporary Internet Files

· Clear COOKIES

· Clear Auto Complete Forms History

· Clear Auto complete Password History

· Clear Internet Favorites

which i think can be done manually by clicking the tool option. (correct me if I am wrong) so what different thing it is doing  by clearing temp files etc to protect privacy.
Again if u suggest me to download it ,Do i have to download it both in LAPTOP as well as in desktop as both are connected. Desktop has a router and laptop has wireless connection.
Please explainYou are better off controlling your own privacy.
I would recommend just installing AND using a good malware scanner/cleaner and anti-virus.  I'd have to agree with Quantos. Add to what he said "smart computing" as the best defense. Thanks u both for the suggestion!

Solve : windows freezes at progress bar?

Answer»

ok i have an asus notebook x53L series , and i NEEDED to format it and installed a clean copy of windows xpsp3. Everything was fine until i installed the network driver.
During the installation of this driver , the system worked really really slow even the cursor of the mouse was moving slow. And i coulden't cancel the installation of the driver. The driver didn't installed.
So i pressed the power button to shutdown/open again and now windows is freezing at the progres bar (the bar that is moving from left to right).
Only safe mode is working , but without networking.
My problem begin with the installation of the networking driver... that caused all my problems. If i use system restore to UNDO the installation is working , but still with no network connections...
Any suggestions ? thanks
Edit: it uses the Atheros L1 GIGABIT Ethernet Controller driverhave you tried re downloading their drivers? Also do you have a spare network card that you can swap out? Are there any other devices in Device Manager that show up under unknown devices or that have a yellow exclamation on them?Start again. Format, Install Windows, then install the chipset driver first and then you can install the other drivers.I managed to install the lan driver, i was TRYING to install lan driver before chipset thats why it didnt work.SO i installed all my driver programs , everything was fine until i shutdown the notebook. So next time BOOM ... same problem , windows fail to load its stuck on progress bar that moves 1mm per hour..

Solve : Only accessing some sites?

Answer»

Hi all,
My girlfriend just bought a new Acer LAPTOP. She brought it home and set up her wireless connection, but it will only access select sites. Gmail works, and it will do a google search, but we can't get on any other site from there. It won't access cnn.com, or pretty much any other site. When she brings the computer SOMEWHERE else and accesses a different wireless network, she is able to access any website and the computer has full functionality.

Any suggestions for making her home wireless network work properly? Thanks so much! What's the make/model of the router she is using, and the model number of the Acer laptop ?

Have her plug into the wireless router with a cable and see if there's improvment.. If the problem is corrected, then we've isolated the problem to the wireless environment..

Hey thanks so much. plugging in got us working to full functionality so it looks like a wireless problem. the make of the acer is aspire 5532 and the router is netgear wireless cable modem gateway cg824wg.  thanks again. It doesn't look like there's is an updated driver for the built in wireless card in your laptop, so the only other things I can think of at this point, is that your gateway needs a firmware update, or you need to try using another wireless channel.  I've seen this kind of thing before (firmware issues) with with Windows 7 and older wireless gateways which support only the 802.11/b standard, which is the case with your gateway.

Do you know how to access the gateway's configuration page from a broswer, like Internet Explorer ?  If so, try using a different wireless channel.

Look here at Wikipedia and notice the Channels and international compatibility

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11

Your gateway supports any ONE of the many channels listed, the trick is to make sure you select a channel that's not being used by any others in your area.  You could be getting interference from SOMEONE's wireless router in the area, that using the same channel as you...  You need to be using a channel not used by anyone else, and it should not overlap with other channel in the area... for example, channel 1, 6, and 11 do not overlap...

If you've tried other wireless channels and the situation has not improved, I'd say try updating the firmware in the gateway...  Once you access the gateway home page through the browser there may be a utility you can use to look for the latest firmware for the device...  Contact the Manufacturer for the latest firmware if you have trouble... I went over there to Netgear and had a hard time finding firmware DOWNLOADS..

Solve : How to speed up upload time on YouTube?

Answer»

I will start uploading 720p files to YouTube which are 10 minute TV Recordings. For two 10 minute recordings, it is 600 MB files (From WINDOWS Media Video) BUT the upload speed is only 2 MEGABIT which is slow as *censored* and the ISP is Optimum ONLINE. I convert using FFMPEG and it is slow converting to x264 on my primary system and Windows 7 x64)
If you see the YouTube user http://www.youtube.com/ayisandleen which is shared my both Me and my sister, you may start seeing HD 720p episodes starting Sunday. I share an ISP with my parents.
I want to speed up upload time without re-encoding the file or making the file smaller. Can you help me?2 Megabits/sec upload time is not bad at all.  You must be having software issues on your computer...  My upload speed is only about 1/4 of yours, 512 Kilobits/sec, and I can upload to youtube with out much trouble..

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking, connect to Youtube, and see if your upload speed improves at all...  This will help confirm whether software is the issue, with upload speed..

I don't have any error. I will encode at MPEG4, not WMV9.Any connection on the internet is limited by many factors.  They can include but are not limited to traffic load at the server SIDE, bandwidth throttling at the server side, the actual route that the data takes to get to the server.

Your upload speed is fine, just remember that unless you pay for more bandwidth you won't get the upload to MATCH the download.  ALL cable and DSL providers throttle the upload for a reason, they don't want you running a server on their bandwidth allocation.720p for Youtube seems like over kill.  And 2Mb upload speed is better than most.

Solve : Win2000Pro not connecting to internet or home network?

Answer»

I am trying to get a fresh installation of Win2000 Pro (retired company computer, Dell Optiflex GX240) to 1)  connect to the internet via DSL and 2) connect to a home network.  This is with a fresh INSTALL of the OEM-supplied OS disks.  The computer can connect to my home network with static addressing (IP and Subnet made to match the IP ADDR of the other machines on the network changing the last number) but not with dynamic addressing.  But internet is not found via Internet Explorer with dynamic or static addressing.  I also tried connecting the ISP-supplied DSL modem directly to the computer and that also does not work.

I am doing this for free for a fellow employee, so cannot take it to a SHOP (which is what my ISP help line suggested this weekend).

There might be a clue in the behavior of ANOTHER machine on the network.  Less pressing is my own problem getting an eMachine running Windows XP to connect to my network using dynamic addressing.   I can get on with static addressing made to match the other IP addresses and Subnet Mask on the network, but then, I cannot get internet on that machine.  The problem is similar to the Win2000 problem described above, so I though I would mention it.  But I am sure it is not a problem with the router, as I have tried different ports, different cables and the problem stays with the one XP machine (and the Win2000 belonging to my co-worker).  The other machines on the network are 1 running Win98 and 3 running XP.  Win 95C also works.

Thanks for reading. Thanks for being here.
Larry Try a new Network Card.Make sure you have not configured these computers to logon through a domain name (as they would in the corporate network).  Right-click My Computer, select Properties, select Computer Name.  Under Workgroup, they should all have the same name:  calling them all "Workgroup" is handy.

Since you have:  1 running Win98 and 3 running XP.  Win 95C also works", it's not the router.  You didn't say if these 5 are DHCP.

Solve : Can't make wireless connections?

Answer»

HI,
I recently set up a NETGEAR wireless router.  During the install I followed the set up directions using the installation disc.  As the program proceeded, I selected"NONE" for security level, the program finished the installation, and we had a strong/good connection using this router with our laptop in our home.

After a few days I thought about the security level "NONE" and decided to change it.  I had previously watched a video on setting up a wireless router.  It happened to mention that WINDOWs XP (my OS) should be set at the WEP security level.  I choose that one, and have not been able to make a wireless connection to our lap top since then.

I have reset the router to its factory default settings, unplugged the router,
tried the other security settings, gone back to security level 'NONE", and nothing has worked. I have an internet connection on my PC, the router lights are all indicating the connection is good, and the installation disc when I run it again and again continues to SHOW that the router is set up CORRECTLY and WORKING properly, but it is not connecting to the lap top.  I can't find a setting that will let me uninstall whatever settings are causing this and reinstalling the program just as though the router just came out of the box.  Just running the installation disc again isn't fixing this. What can I try next?

Thanks,
beachguyWhat's the make/model of the router ?

If the router support WPA2 security, you should be using that, not WEP.  Windows XP supports WPA2 just fine, so you should use WPA2.  Follow article here, to make sure you've got the correct service packs/patches INSTALLED..

Regarding the connection issue.  What you have to do if first, set up and enable WPA2 security in the router, and configure a password for it.  It can be up to 63 characters long, but use something you can at least remember.. think of a long awkward sentence, or something, and type it in, with out spaces.  I'm not sure if spaces are supported in encryption passwords..

Once you get the WPA security set up, use XP to identify the your wireless router and click on the router to connect to it..  Enter the Password you just entered into the router, HIT enter you you should be connected... Do not share the password with anyone, unless you trust them...

EEVIAC,
Thanks for your input. It is a NETGEAR wireless-300 Router WNR2000v2.  I am going to try all your suggestions and I will get back to you.  I have XP Pro/SP3 so from what you said and going to the site you listed, it seems like I should be ready to go and not need any patches.  Is that correct?  Hope some of this works.

beachguyyah if you have SP3 already you should be good to go...

Solve : Whack attack!?

Answer»

So,

is it possible for an attacker to abuse/use your connection/inject into your PC even if it's off but the router is on and the cable is plugged into your NIC, working and transferring data from the internet?
More specifically, inject into your PC and take control of it? I would think not, since it's off.
What about abusing the connection itself?

tip: no I'm not looking for *ware-scanning solutions. It's just out of curiosity. =PThe fact that you have a router means nobody can initiate a connection from outside to in. When you go to a web site, you can receive that traffic because you requested it, and it is a response to an open socket. However, if someone from outside initiates an incoming transmission unsolicited, the firewall will drop it. This is unless you have a port forward setup.... but if you did have that, you would know about it.

There is such thing as Wake on LAN to turn on a computer that is off over the network, although I have never seen anyone actually implement it.

In short, noWell.

1) I have implemented Wake-on-LAN and it's *censored* handy, especially when I'm bed with my laptop and I forgot to turn the PC on and need resources from it (there is a neat little WOL-GUI front end app; I even posted a blog about it).

2) YES I have ports forwarded. Can't someone portscan me and then just exploit those ports?

3) Is my Kaspersky firewall going to warn me when someone is trying to inject into a process/enter my computers? Why are people so bloody paranoid? No offense intended, of course.

Quote

2) Yes I have ports forwarded. Can't someone portscan me and then just exploit those ports?

I have a of ports forwarded myself.

When I port scan my IP (from another off-site PC, of course), or perform one of the many online port scans it comes back with no response on every single port.

A Connection with these ports can only be established if the PC that it was being forwarded to is listening to that port. it has to accept the connection. Otherwise the routers default behaviour, which is usually to completely ignore the attempt, kicks in.

If it doesn't it's not as good as everybody seems to think  (short answer: yes)
Well Mr. BC-programmer, I'm the target of two HACKER groups. No, they are not noobs. One Dutch, one from the UK.
They already compromised my e-mail accounts in the past, not to mention my PC.

So yes, naturally I am paranoid.
Not to mention there are a group of kiddies following me everyone on the internet googling my name and what I do and if I take a dump or what not and post it on a forum laughing about me.
Yeah. You wouldn't want that to happen to you.

If you haven't been hacked, sure, don't be paranoid.
But once you are, then it's alarm time.

How do I get in these situations?
Let's just say I don't like society and make most people my enemy.

Well, I guess that makes more sense. I have a bunch of "hackers" who claim they are going to "grep" me, but given their complete misuse of the term grep I'm pretty certain they really have no idea what they're doing, hahaha. They did demonstrate their ability to grep a text file, which was somehow supposed to scare me. needless to say it provided me a SOURCE of amusement, not paranoia, heh.

Well... only games I play online are quake 2 and Zdaemon. Only Played CounterStrike once. Needless to say rocket jumping rocket jumping doesn't work any better on that then it does on Crysis. At least the game is merciful and doesn't have quads.First of all maybe you shouldn't piss off the hackers so much?

Second, don't be paranoid? Yes be paranoid! It's only the foolish thinks they are safe. Where there's a will there's a way. So long you have a active connection, there's a way in. You can pretty much just slow them down or make it hard enough they give up.

Thrid, where there's Microsoft there's a hole of exploits. It's the most targeted and the easiest to find holes in. Keep your software, security and OS up-to-date as much as possible.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 is quite good at Proactive Defense and will attempt to block network scans and attacks if setup correctly. Black Ice Anti-hacker is great to go on the revenge if you or your server is being attacked or DDOSed by reflecting it back, but only good for intrusion detection, FAILS as a complete firewall.

Pro Hackers will go stealth and inject a keylogger, grabbing your passwords and personal details over and over. They don't do damage, they just watch and gather, use, hand out to others as dumps (these are the worst as then any idiot then can screw with you) or ignore. Kaspersky can detect most keyloggers, however they use a stuffer over the file to make it invisible to most anti-virus scanners.

If they can't attack the computer, emails and other things are a lot easiler, depending on your password and details. The stupid secret word is the biggest security hole for email, leaving a easy backdoor. Instant Messagers like yahoo and msn are also major exploit holes.

Solve : Setting Up Wireless Network?

Answer»

Fairly straightforward question, can I use a router to pick up wireless signals. The only experience I have with routers is using them to broadcast the Internet coming from a hardline and then sending it out wirelessly, what I am trying to do is use a router to pick up a wireless signal in the far end of my workplace and send that back to a computer or switch to be distributed via ethernet. I've thought about using a bridge for this same concept but I am unsure whether a bridge will be able to accept wireless internet without using a similar bridge to send it out to this side of the network. I know I could use a computer to just pick up the wireless signal via a wireless PCI ethernet card but I need to use a high gain antenna with some KIND of coax cable and I need to keep the cable length to a minimum and there is no way to get the computer itself close enough to the antenna without running 25+ feet of coax. I'm also not sure the maximum length of coax I could use that will not degrade the signal beyong use, but I should be good keeping it under 25 feet.

My current theology on this setup is...

Existing wireless signal is picked up by the High Gain Antenna which is then run through coax to the Router which is run through CATV cable to the Computer via networking card which is run through CATV cable to the Switch which is run through CATV cable to the Access Point which can now broadcast that internet to be useable wirelessly by our company's computers.

I'll be using multiple Accesspoints which is why I'm using a switch, The only issue I'm having trouble with is keeping the coax cable to a minimum so I'll need SOMETHING between the Antenna and the desktop computer.

Any help with this is much appreciated.Few routers will do what you are looking for. You want a wireless to ethernet bridge. Some bridges will only work with others of the same model, so be careful.I've thought about using the bridge but I just don't know what kind of CONFIGURATION options they have, ie do I have to know the IP address of the Wireless I'm trying to pick up? Is there some special coding that passes between two bridges that make them see eachother? I'm just trying to find a way to make the antenna be at least 50 feet from my computer by either running it through something I can get closer to the antenna, LIKE a router or bridge which I can mount on a bulkhead/overhead wall/ceiling. It was even suggested to me from my boss to look into using a singal amplifier on the coax cable but I don't know much about them either or what kind of degredation that will CAUSE to my signal and if that will make it unuseable...

Solve : Hi Speed USB Port for Mobile Broadband ??

Answer»

Hi,

I recently got mobile Broadband ,  & I am getting a MESSAGE on my Windows XP desktop saying there is a hi speed port available which will make the device work faster if I plug it into the recommended port.
I have located the port in the list but I don’t KNOW how to set it up, or where it is physically located   ?

My AVG security says I am directly CONNECTED to the internet & GAMING mode is disabled if this is any help.

Advice would be greatly appreciated.

What's the make/model of the laptop  ?It's a Fujitsu Siemens Desktop Scaleo P.
OP. system = Windows XP HOME,  version 3, 32 bit

& that's where my tech knowledge ends !

Thanks for posting. Are you by any chance plugging the USB broadband adapter into and external USB hub ?  If the hub is using the USB 1.0 standard, then you should remove it and directly attach it to your computer which uses the USB 2.0 standard (faster data transfer speeds)Yeah, it sounds like you are using a USB 1 port, and the USB modem supports USB 2. If you have a USB 2 port, use it. But I bet the performance difference is going to be zero since USB 1 = 11Mbit, and your broadband is probably around 1MbThanks Guys,

The USB modem stick is plugged directly into the computer, which has 4 ports (2 at back & 2 at front) but I don't know how to tell which is the USB 2
port ?

I'm using the front ones for ease of moving between desktop & lap top, but have tried it in the back with no noticeable difference. http://www.ciao.co.uk/Productinformation/Fujitsu_Siemens_SCALEO_P_Athlon_64_3500_2_2_GHz__6852833

According to the info. provided above, you computer supports USB 1.0, only. It would specify 2.0, if it had 2.0 ports..

However, the computer seems to have Firewire ports, which are faster than the USB ports in your computer.

See here for a USB/Firewire adapter

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10314&cs_id=1031401&p_id=4813&seq=1&format=2Actually, you're computer uses a 6-pin Firewire ports... The link I provided for the adapter is a 4 pin firewire adapter, so void that link..

You'll need to find and adapter that plugs into the 6-pin Firewire port and converts it to a USB port, preferably 2.0... Thank you very, very much ... I'll try that a.s.a.p.

Solve : Setting up a network.?

Answer»

I installed a Netgear Wireless-G router this past weekend and not exactly sure if I networked my computers together correctly.

The way I have it set up is broadband to router and router to primary desktop computer via hardwire. From there  I use a wireless adapter for a secondary desktop and plan on doing a laptop when I get this cleared up.

File sharing is where I am having my issue. If I want to look at a file on my primary (hardwired) computer I am able to go to -My Network Places- on my secondary computer and click on the file, but if I want to look at a file on my secondary (wireless) from my primary computer I can't. What am I missing. I should be able to file share both computers correct?

Both computers should be connecting to the router.

from the sounds of it you're using a wireless adapter to connect ad-hoc to the laptop, so the laptop is actually using the computer for a access point, which in turn uses the router for internet access. You might also check and disable your laptop firewall .. And change your laptop file to share file .. Hope it help..Thanks for the input. I figured out what was wrong.

Hi. I work in an ADSL2+ and Dial Up ISP.
Unfortunately, you can't connect two different dial up accounts and connection in one phone line at the same time.
One computer is to one phone line is that ratio.
But you can set-up your brother's dial up account on your computer.
It's like having two dial up accounts or connection sharing in one computer and one phone line.

Solve : Cisco Valet Plus (in Thunderstorm) can I turn off router and unplug it?

Answer»

When there is a thunderstorm and Lightning, can the Cisco Valet Plus be turned off and unplugged from outlet to prevent my router and modem and computer from being damaged from lightning? And would I have to reset it or would it reset by itself with the Easy Setup Key. I don't have the router yet, but thinking of getting itYes, you do have reason to the concerned. You may need to INVESTIGATE what the local electrical codes are in your area and one other recommendations for lightning t protection in your area.
In some parts of the world lightning strikes that hit the ground or buildings in residential areas is not very common.  For that reason some have said there is low reason for concerned are.  Yet when it happens to you and causes damage to expensive equipment what others have said does not help you any.  They don't have to pay for the damage.
In general, the local electrical codes should reduce to a minimum the possibility of a lightning charge going down the power lines and getting in your system.
However, there is a much greater danger from your telephone line.  Yes, the telephone company does have lightning arresters on the line.  Still, a liability of the telephone company is formed telephone equipment, not to personal computer equipment.
My own personal experience was that my equipment was damaged by the phone line, not the power lines.  In FACT, the power supply in your computer has some protection against overload built into it.  However the DSL modem may not have that type of protection.  In fact, it's not able to have that much protection because of the way it's built.
A SURGE protector can protect your power lines.  There are some but also have privation for protection of the telephone line.  That is not going to be a much value unless the company that sells it also guarantees they have an insurance policy on the surge protector that would cover all your losses.  In fact, there are in some companies set off to this kind of protection.
Meanwhile, I would recommend you unplug all the cables, including the power cable from your DSL modem.  This would also apply to a cable modem, although the cable company usually has better lightning protection than the phone company.  But you cannot count on it.
Another consideration is the use of a lightning rod on your house.  This will greatly reduce the chance of your equipment being damaged by lightning.  But not all cases.  Again, the problem is wearing that goes out to the street can provide another pass for liking to get into your house.  If your house or apartment has underground wiring it would be very unlikely that lightning would come into your residence.  The greater problem is when electrical lines, and telephone and cable lines, are strong overhead.
I hope these comments are some help to you.  If you see something funny what I said, I cannot type freewill so I have to do this with voice dictation.

http://www.wikihow.com/Protect-Yourself-in-a-Thunderstorm

http://www.deltala.com/

And there is Google:
http://www.google.com/search?q=Modem+hit+by+Lightning&ie

I would recommend buying a good UPS unit and plug everything into it.  Most UPS units use regular line power to power everything most of the time but almost all have extremely good surge protectors.  And if power does go off , even briefly, the batteries will keep the equipment from going on and off which is not good for any electronics.

I live in a high lightning area, have a UPS, and leave everything on 24/7 and don't worry about it.

However, if there is a really, really close lightning strike it's going to do major damage no matter what you do.  Several times I seen the aftermath of a close strike.  Once it blew a 200 amp breaker box, and I mean the whole box, out of the wall and it flew 20' across the room.

Get a UPS, or a really good surge protector (really good ones COST almost as much as a UPS), you get what you pay for, the $20 surge protectors are junk.

BTW, if you do have an extended power outage, unplugging the router for about a minute will usually restore service.

Solve : New computer to existing network?

Answer»

Hi,

My grandmother recently BOUGHT a computer from a neighbor. Our current desktop has had problems but our router is connected to the modem, which is connected to the tower.

My QUESTION is, how would i hook up a new computer to an existing wireless network? I WANT other suggestions before i possibly ruin things with the internet, SINCE i'm a college student and the web is my life right now lol.

To connect it to wireless and computer does not have wireless adapter then you can buy WiFi dongle for like 20€ to USB. Installation is pretty EASY, just connect and follow steps.
If it has already adapter then activate it and depends how router is setup (IP address assignment, MAC address filtering, WEP/WPA/WPA2 encryption, ...) you should follow it.

Solve : WebMail i.e. squirrelmail setup in Linux5?

Dear Friend

To configure webmail in linux5, I’ve followed below procedures:

-   Squirrelmail-1.4.2.tar.gz and UNZIPPED under the folder /var/www/html
-   cd squirrelmail-1.4.2
-   cd config
-   within this directory, ./conf.pl
-   From main menu, I did choose 2 for domain (i.e. arafapparels.com). This is my official domain
-   Then save and exit
-   For IMAP setting, I did choose D
-   Selected uw and save, then exit
-   Then from command line, I wrote chown –R apache.apache /var/www/html/data (I created folder data in the above path)
-   I created a folder named as attach to keep ATTACHMENT in /var/www/html i.e. /var/www/html/attach
-   Then typed grep –R apache /var/www/html/attach
-   Then typed chmod 730 /var/www/html/mail/attach (Here squirrelmail-1.4.2 directory has been moved to mail directory)
-   Then from web browser/Internet explorer, I typed http://localhost/mail/
-   Here Username & Password appears. Previously I have created username.
-   But when put Username & Password, below error message displays

Error connecting to IMAP server: localhost
13: Permission denied
But I gave permission by chmod 777 /var/www/html/mail

Please HELP, what should I do now to RESOLVE the difficulties.

Solve : Blocking domains/IP's?

Answer»
My question is very simple.
Suppose I am SEEING in my firewall that firefox uses domains (invisibly) that I don't want it to use.
Suppose anywhere I see domains that I don't want to be connected to me.

How do I block out these domains completely (e.g. *.blockeddomain.xyz*)
from every being able to connect/ICMP/whatever/reach to my computer?
Is there a GUI tool for this? Maybe my router?
What router do you have? Did you read the documentation?
Did you try Google?
Have you been to http://NetNanny.com and looked at their stuff?

No, I don't recommend you buy it. Just asking if you know what it is and have your used the free trail. If that sort of thing is what you want, there a r some free downloads of shareware that do the same thing.
If it connects to domains you don't want:
1. it could be unwanted app in your PC = remove it, scan for viruses
2. usually it does such a connections by its needs and it si normalI wold recommend you download Avast Antivirus Home Edition (free) and scan your PC. If you're infectred by some malware the best thing to do would be to remove it.No THANKS to your avast recommendation. For one, I am not a kid who can't afford paying AV's. For two, Kaspersky. For three, I didn't ask for a malware advice. If that were the case, I would post in the malware subforums. For four, this is about blocking domains individually. I'm tech enough to know when I'm infected.

I think some people exaggerate in their CH status. 'Guru', please. At least I am modest and I put myself as 'experienced'.Such a connections should stop on router or software firewall on your PC. I recomend a router then, it automatically does not transfer anything from wan to lan if you don't set it. QUOTE

Ok I can play the counting game

You said "Firefox accesses domains invisibly."

1. Have you done any tests to see if it is Firefox
2. Have you tried reinstalling Firefox
3. Have you recently installed a new addon for Firefox
4. If your answers are yes/yes/no, explain to me how this is not malware
5. There is no problem with using Avast. It's not a crappy AV
6. Why don't you go to your router or modem config page and block an IP or domain from there?

PS: I beat you by 2 numbers. You owe me in your next reply.Would this function not be facilitated by the "hosts" file? ("C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts")?

I do know it is used as part of the network functionality in windows so it would prevent Any browser at all from connecting to those sites.

Quote
I think some people exaggerate in their CH status. 'Guru', please. At least I am modest and I put myself as 'experienced'.

I tend to agree. "Guru" is the highest selection and using it sort of implies that there is no chance for further improvement. That is never the case OTOH, it's hard to rate oneself, or any other person, globally with regard to computers; I mean, I'd probably call myself a Guru with, say, Visual Basic 6, but probably Intermediate with, say, C#. Same for operating systems. So EVERYBODY who gives themselves a Rank of "guru" is probably only considering that one area in which they are.Yeah good point.
I already use HostsMan. =P

However, I don't know if adding domains to the hosts file PREVENTS them to connect to any socket (port+IP) on the entire port range of my computer. That's another story I think.. I once prohibited full port range and it still was connecting, so yeah.Hosts file will work.

Soft firewall will work

hard filewall would be best, but you need a router that will support ACL's

Solve : not renew?

Answer»

why would a wireless network not renew the IP address of a computer?   There are a lot of reasons.  Why do you ask?because my network is not renewing the IP address on a wireless computer....That sounds like a good reason to ask

Why don't you give me some information about your SYSTEM and network.  We can take it from there.what type of information do you need?

both dell computers, working off a Verizon Fios ROUTER. One is hardwired, one is wireless. If the internet is up on the wireless, and i reboot, it goes out again. When I repair it says ...cannot complete the procedure. Cannot ASSIGN IP address.

the wireless computer has a linksys adapter which is 'working properly'.Both computers are connected to the router?

What OS are you running on the wireless computer?
What kind of router is it(make and model please)?its an issue with the wireless computer (XP), because in the next room is another wireless computer (Win 7) which works fine.  These two are both on the same network. can you check and make sure DHCP is enabled?yea checked that a long time ago.

anyway..all is fixed. i just redid the whole thing and PUT XP back on. everythign is fine, so it was a setting i couldnt figure out somewhere. thanks for the attempted HELP though...appreciate it.

Solve : Cat6, Cat5??

Will a cat6 crossover adapter work on a cat5 patch cable?

What I want to BUY.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00030BYJI/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ACX92JP8G1QSDYes, but why would you need it?Yes, the pinout should be the same REGARDLESS of the cable quality.

... also true, that most modern switches and NICs will auto-detect the need for crossover, so the point is somewhat nullTo turn a patch cable into a crossover.

its cheaper then buying another 50ft cable.

what im doing requires a crossover, IVE TRIED using the patch cable for it.
my SHORT crossover cable is the only one that worked.

So it will work? Are connecting computer to computer, no router or switch?yeah, but more like original xbox to computer.I know nothing about xbox connectivity.  Are you sure all it needs is a crossover?Yeah, i tested it with a crossover and patch, so all i need to know is if the adapter i wanna buy will work if the cord is cat5.
it seems you guys answered that though, so thanks.thanks again, i probably wont check back unless it doesn't work, but it should.

bye.Yes, it will work with enhanced transmission.
Cat5 is the older Ethernet cable standard,
Cat6 is newer and will support 10 Gigabit, will improve Gigabit preformance.

Solve : Asking for Help (for someone else)?

Answer»

Hey all, so my friend has this problem with his internet.

He lives in a rural town and only has one internet option, DSL.  He also has 5 other family members who regularly use the internet, surfing the web, playing online games, and playing Xbox live.

So what I was wondering, for my friend, is whether it's possible that all the people on the internet at the same time could cause a decrease in internet speeds (causing lag on video games, etc.)  AND ALSO if this could be fixed by buying another internet SUBSCRIPTION & router (or w/e DSL uses to connect).

So is it possible that I-- i mean my friend, could do this, even if it might be pretty expensive?Get a good router and setup QOS (quality of SERVICE) for application and surfing priorities. It would resolve online game not lagging with others surfing the web, etc, but 6 users all accessing at the same time would still slow it down.

Unfortunately DSL relies heavy of the quality of the line for performance. Pick up a phone, dial a number and listen for static - it's a killer for speed. Rural towns normally have this issue.

Buying another internet subscription and router wouldn't work unless you also had another line. Have you ever thought about satellite?

On the news this guy once setup fiber optics underground with a tractor for his rural town's only router that lives in a barn. Now that's high speed internet for all! What is both the advertised and ACTUAL speed of the DSL connection?

Here is one site to check actual speeds.

Pick up a phone, dial a number and listen for static

It's ringing! It's ringing!

HAHA, couldn't help myself

Anyway, router-based QOS is probably the best bet in this case. Quote
It's ringing! It's ringing!

haha  , but seriously dialing one number won't ring... it's to cancel the dial tone so you can clearly hear just the static. Dialing 136 (pulse) or 137 (dial) and hanging up here in NZ will call you back to test the line, lots of fun for a prank too.Ok, YES, you could get a 2nd line, but you won't be able to straight up double the internet speed.

What you would need to end up doing is a load sharing setup. It will defiantly be faster, but it won't be able to split the load at the packet level. Instead, you can either set it to split the load by protocol. for example, games go over one line, and web surfing over another.
Or have it split the load by the socket in a round robin fassion. Example, first person to use the internet goes over one connection, second over the other, and back and forth alternating the load as evenly as it can.

You can get a load balancing router that will do this for a couple hundred bucks.

but... short of that, you might consider QoS as people are suggesting. Quote from: tsarles on April 07, 2010, 02:18:32 PM

Games use the TCP protocol.
so does web surfing.

You realize that the router only knows about TCP and UDP, right? It doesn't treat HTTP any different then other TCP/IP traffic. You could prioritize ports 80 through 90 though, which would have a similar effect. (except when browsing through FTP sites)

My question, is this already installed on my pc as i`ve not been able to LOCATE it & if not where can i download one.?It's a log FILE that is in the router.  To view it you need to access the set up area of your router.Setup WPA2 encryption fór wireless - that´s imho best practice again misuse of your network. And setup a strong password fór it. It MAKES 99.9% SAFETY.

Solve : Network Switch Question?

Answer»

Hi all,

SIMPLE quick question,    I'm setting up a small OFFICE with just plain wired network (4-5 computers) and one printer.

Can just a plain BASIC network switch work in getting 4-5 computers to share files among themselves and print, or would I need to get a router?

Please advise

The "switch" would be fine.
     http://www.home-network-help.com/network-switch.html
     http://www.home-network-help.com/router-hub-switch.html

Within the following link, see the links in the "Networking How-To Center" subsection:
Windows XP: Networking your home or small businessYes, a switch is all you need to be able to print & share files among your pcs. You'll need a router if you want them all to be able to access the internet. So if you plan on connecting them to the internet in the future you may want to buy a combo router & switch now then buying one separately later. You can use switch for now and in the future if you will want connect them to other network, for example internet, you can connect switch to router later.make sure all your PC's are in the same WORKGROUP. Remember also SHARING is limited to only 10 simultaneous connections to 1 computer.

Solve : Why download speed is so slow??

Answer»

I noticed that the internet download speed  suddenly slowed down last night. It was around 80 to 90 kbps before, it changed to around 20 kbps. The internet speed is still roughly the same though. When I tried a speed test, the download speed REALLY reduced but the upload speed remained kinda the same. What could the problem be here? 1.  Does your Internet Service Provider (ISP) limit the number of bytes you may download and/or upload during a "fixed" or "sliding" 30 day window?  If you exceed this value, your ISP may "throttle" back your access speeds.  (I know this is "true" of WildBlue Satellite connections.)

2.  You could power reset all of the hardware components in your Internet access path:  Modem, Home Router, Home Computer.
     a.  Gracefully shutdown and power off the computer.
     b.  Unplug power to router and modem.
     c.  Wait a minute or so...
     d.  Reconnect power to modem and wait (as long as it takes - DEPENDS on ISP) for it to reinitialize...
     e.  Then reconnect power to router and wait for it to reinitialize (a minute or so).
     f.  Restart computer and retest.

If that doesn't resolve the issue, I'd probably let it GO a COUPLE of days to see if the problem resolves itself...

You could call your ISP and see if they're aware of any "capacity" issues at their end (but I'm not optimistic you'd get any meaningful answer from them).

3.  Perhaps you have multiple security software products "examing" the download stream.  Any recent "updates" or changes to your security environment?

What security products are installed?

4.  If Windows XP, boot to "Safe Mode with Networking" and CHECK your download speeds.  Do not surf the Internet in this mode as most of your security software will be disabled.  Just check the download speeds using a "trusted" site.

5.  If there another computer in the household you could check your download speeds with? What ISP do you have and what type of connection is it?
Many ISPs these days are throttling download speeds during heavy traffic hours.Don't you have some adware / malware eating your connection?
Try netstat -a to see all connections and check if they are ok.Or it could have just been a problem with the server from which you were downloading. Or was this a torrent?

It may not have been your fault at all.

Solve : VPN to Main Office?

Answer»

Hello all,

I plan on connecting 2 branch office LOCATIONS to our main office. Our main office has a watchguard edge firewall with built in VPN w/IPSEC. Our internet speeds are very slow 1.5Mbps because of our main office LOCATION. I've been using PPTP connecting remote laptops but im wondering if using the same type of connection in the system is the best way. In other words setting up the vpn on the network rather then the CLIENT. We are also not in a domian environment. What would you guys RECOMMEND for easy vpn connections (hardware, software ex.)

Thanks,

brettWell I think my idea is going to be installing Cisco RVL200 at each outpost for connection, they support both PPTP and VPN with IPSEC. you can try to use a free service like Logmein, it would work with out a vpn. Just need webaccess and you can remote into any computer. yea i use that service a lot, but all i want to do is be on the network, not remote to a computer.  LogMeIn have a new tool available, called Hamachi. It will create a VPN between sites over the internet, and join them. The catch is you will need to install it onto every computer at all the sites or try and bridge the two adapters.

You will need something on the network to give toe 2 computers IP ADDRESSES or you will need to assign static IP addresses (on all devices connecting to the network).

Solve : multiple wireless cards/utilites--no connectivity?

Answer»

Dell Inspiron 1300-XP--service pack 3

I recently got the computer second hand, so I'm not familiar with its history.

At first, a WIRELESS reception bar showed for an "AWU254 wireless CLIENT",but no reception--cursor over symboL produced
'AWU254 wireless client not exist'.
There was no wireless connection at all in network connections.

As several other wireless-related CARDS (utilities) are listed under a search for "wireless",I uninstalled the AWU254.
 These are--Intel PROSet/wireless(program files/Intel),Broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller, Dell wireless.

1)Intel PROSet/wireless(program files/Intel)--clicking produces 'Intel PPROSet wireless' box saying "driver is not installed"-'intel Proset/wireless software was unable to detect a supported wireless adapter. Please install a supported adapter
Thinking that it wasn't supported because there was no driver, I tried to download the driver, but the intel site searched my system endlessly with no action
Likely more to the point, there's no Intel proset detected by device manager.

2)Broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller isn't wireless

3)The "Dell wireless" in program files contains "Dell wireless WLAN card utility", which refers to WIN/Sys32/bcmwlcpl.CPL
--which doesn't exist
sys32 does contain a BCMWLTRY, "Dell wireless WLAN card network controller", but it produces no RESPONSE.

"wireless configuration utility" in the control panel does nothing.

--Should I see if there's a card there that just needs to be resecured (i'm not a computer person, as you might have guessed, so
I'm not eager to open it up)?

Thanks for the help

I've noticed that noone's responded to my post. If it's unclear, or there's some other reason i'm not getting an answer, I'd appreciate suggestions on how to improve it so that it elicits responses

thanksJust wait a bit. Everybody is busy with other issues right now.
You said you have a:
Dell Inspiron 1300-XP--service pack 3
Look around and see if you  can find the service tag number. Go into the Dell web site and you can find the owners manual for that PC. you can also find what built-in networking it has.

My guess is the first owner tried some other wireless cards or adapters for some reason. If you need basic wireless connection, you can get a USB adapter that will give you a simple connection if you ha e a wireless router in your house of office. Of course, you would want to remove the other wireless software.

You can get a good adapter at Wall Mart for under $25 or so.

This is a good question.
Of course blue tooth works without wires. But the term 'wireless' is often used for a broad range of other devices.
What you call 'wireless' may be called 802.11 technology. The numbers refer to a standard that is widely used but is not the same as bluetooth.

What the two systems share::
  • Good quality digital audio and video.
  • Use of frequencies far above the 900Mhz telephone handsets.
  • Short range communication. The range is about 10 to 100 meters.
  • Reasonable privacy and security. (This can be debated.)
  • Lost-cost small lightweight devices.
  • No need for special licenses.
  • Presently both are mutually exclusive. They are not compatible.

This list is not comprehensive nor in order of importance. It is an executive summary of INFORMATION found in the links already posted above. Beyond these general attributes, there are specific applications that may favor one over the doter. If you want a wireless microphone, bluetooth is a good choice. But by no means is it the only piratical choice in a particular setting.

There is not really much new. Not yet. It has been proposed that the standards  should be merged together in the future. In my humble opinion,  this is like asking Dots and Cats to interbreed.  Bluetooth has a MUCH MUCH shorter range then Wifi. Quote from: umbra on March 27, 2010, 01:15:23 AM

Very hard to explain this. But some warm bodies out there are wanting to use Bucktooth mobile devices with a new application of a SQL database.

Please don't ask why. It MAKES my head throb.Hi ,

Thanks to all for posting and helping... it has been a while since I have not been online here, (kept by day by day things   ).

Very good posts which clarified for me many stuffs related to this subject.

Thanks again for them .

Related to that SQL part.... it was happening a really strange thing, i replayed to a "member" which had nick name "SQL INJECTIONS" , who told me... that my C: drive has an error and will be formatted, and i give that reply , than post become the right one  , that given by "midsail" and that strange post disappeared...

Really i don't know what was happening, i am afraid that here could be some security lacks.

"SQL INJECTIONS" was a spammer. his post was deleted and he was banned. That's funny. When I saw him the letters SQL I did a Google on those letters along with the keyword Bluetooth.
Somebody somewhere is coming out with a mobile application for your cell phone or pager or something like that and you'll be able to access an SQL database over your portable device. Kind of hard to understand, but apparently there's a need for people to get into a database without having a bunch of wires.

I could imagine that a doctor would be in the operating room working on a PATIENT and then he forgot something. He would pull his little blue to devise out of his pocket press a few buttons and he would see a reference to a medical CYCLOPEDIA that explain to him what an appendix looks like.

i cant use wifi on my laptop anymore. i can still go to the internet if i plug the cable to the laptop but whenever i try to access the internet using the wireless connection of the same network i receive an error. the wireless connection works fine on other computers so im pretty sure its something with the laptop not the network.
please help, any help will be appreciate. thank you!

i did a clean installation with windows xp on the laptop a month ago.

Have you been able to CONNECT at all, since you reinstalled?i can connect using the wire but i didnt try the wireless connection yet.I'm confused.  You say you had problems connecting through wi-fi, so you switched to cable.  But  then you did a clean installation, but you haven't tried the wi-fi, after the installation ? ?Does your WiFi support dynamic IP assignement?
Did it asked for encryption key?
Is WiFi on notebook enabled?Sorry if my posts are confusing!
I did a clean install a month ago, the wireless was working fine before the clean install. I always use the wire to connect to the Internet after the clean install. I notice the wifi problem yesterday because I did not try to connect to any wireless network since the clean installation. I try to connect to diffrent wifi the computer says I'm connected but IE says I'm not and gives me the same error everytime I try to access the web. I already reset the IE settings but it's still not working.

salvosko i dont know about dynamic ip for the wifi, the computer says im connected but internet explorer says im not. yes wifi is enabled on the notebook.Ok, then your WiFi is connected to nearest active PART which is router, that is what system says.
IE is trying to connect further, to the public internet which does not work.
Compare network setting for WiFi and LAN adpater, it seems to me as DNS is not set properly for WiFi.When you install XP on a laptop you must set up the wireless using the wireless wizard. You will need to have the right driver for the wireless device of your laptop. And you will need the WEP or WEPA key for your  wireless router.

Also, you need to have XP updated with services packs and other updates.salvosko how can i compare the DNS settings between LAN and WIFI.

Geek9pm yes i updated xp but i didnt UPDATE the wireless driver. i already have a WEPA key for my wireless.Go to Network connections and check TCP/IP PROPERTIES for each adapter.
Or do ipconfig /all from cmd line and you should see that as well but both has to be enabled and active which could be a problem.

Solve : Cannot access 192.168.2.1 Despite trying all obvious solutions?

Answer»

Hello,

I've got a problem that I'd be very grateful if someone was to help me.

I cannot access from my browser my router configuration 192.168.2.1 from IE 7 DESPITE being able to access the Internet. As a result of this I cannot change my SETTINGS to ensure my router is password protected or rename it.

I have tried practically everything in command prompt such as ipconfig/ all and ping 192.168.2.1. Pinging was initially successful however now it fails stating that "Request Timed Out" I have re-setted the modem, router countless times but to no joy. Could someone help me please

I am running Windows Vista and my router is a Micradigital WLAN. If I need to paste my IP settings etc. could someone please TELL me how to do it from command prompt?

Thanks very much in advance Try 192.168.1.1Unfortunatley that also failed. If this helps here is more info:

No it doesn't look like thatSeems your router is in bridge mode if you have public IP on device behind the router.
But be carefull, if you reset it maybe you lost connection to internet.
Check your router manual how to reset it to default and then use default IP mentioned in manual (with login / password).
Which type your router do you have? I can check manul for you.

Solve : WRT54G V4 issues?

My wireless works.   But the CONNECTION name we have always seen is not being found.  When I search available networks it doesn’t find it anymore.  It just says Linksys.  I’ve unplugged it, used a pin to restart it from the back.  We also do not have security on it.
I'm out of warranty, because I contacted Linksys.  My router is old, should I buy a new one?  Is there new technology that dictates doing so?
I have a Toshiba laptop that uses Vista.  Also, my Blackberry can’t find our old connection either, it also just found Linksys
I’m fairly new at this, so if I’ve forgotten something, I greatly apologize
Please help me….
Thanks

Do you by chance have the wireless ssid broadcast  disabled

I have one of these and it isn't the best of the best. I finally set it to wireless MAC fikters and only ALLOWED my 2 wireless units to connect1) how do I change that setting?
2) how did that setting change from when it did work ok?
3) if not this one, is there a better one?
Are you absolutely sure the "Linksys" connection you're seeing is your router and not one the belongs to someone else who lives nearby?  If this seems a possibility, you could verify it by turning off your router and then try connecting.Interesting thought.  But no, once unplugged my internet goes down with it.  I just don't know what happened to my other connection.  And why is it a new connection with no encryption?  Maybe I should just ignore.  What is the RIGHT way to encrypt, while saving the long password, to have for the future?A reference: How To Protect a Linksys WRT54G Router Using WAP and WEP Quote from: midwestguy on March 27, 2010, 11:16:00 AM

Log into your router, wireless, basic settings. When you done the reset it went back to factory, so the router will also need renamed under setupThank you very much for all of your help....I'm back on line now!
Last question though, my linksys is old.   Is a new one with NEWER technology going to make a difference? No, the WRT54G is capable of WPA, which is very secure. So, keep using the WRT54G until it fails, and then REPLACE it. Quote from: midwestguy on March 28, 2010, 11:16:12 AM

Solve : Router or Software???

Answer»

I'm having some issues connecting to the internet.  Let me preface by saying that this issue started a few days ago after a McAfee update, and has worked perfectly fine since LAST FALL without issue.  After the update is when I noticed the issue, so my assumption is that McAfee is causing the conflict.

CURRENT SETUP
Two computers (both HP Pavilian laptops running Windows 7 64 bit), a wireless router (Cradlepoint MBR1000), McAfee Security Suite, and a wireless air card (via Sprint Sierra USB598).

ISSUE:
When I connect to the internet via my router, I can access a page or two before either the router or McAfee starts blocking outgoing TCP packets and/or I'm disconnected because the router received a deauthentication.

SOLUTIONS I'VE TRIED
Rebooting Router
Rebooting to Factory Settings
Disabling IPV6 in Windows 7 (At the suggestion of the Cradlepoint tech)
Using aircard in laptop to connect (works just fine)
Double checking there is no conflict between IP addresses of router/computers
Double checked DNS addresses - no conflict

I'm not sure what else to do at this point.  I never had an issue with McAfee and the router fighting before, but now it seems they are.  I'm almost 100% positive its because of the update, I just don't know how to fix it.

I tried searching the internet for other suggestions, and tried various approaches, but nothing helped.  Any suggestions?

ETA: Even when the page says it can't find the server for yahoo, google, etc, My computer still shows that it is connected to both the internet and the WLAN router.  The errors SHOW up in my router log files.1 - From your question (Router or Software??) : Have you tried another computer to determine the cause of the problem
2 - Is there a feature in McAfee  : ROLL back to the previous database ( like kaspersky ) Quote from: zf490 on March 21, 2010, 06:48:01 AM

1 - From your question (Router or Software??) : Have you tried another computer to determine the cause of the problem
2 - Is there a feature in McAfee  : Roll back to the previous database ( like kaspersky )

1: Yes, it has the same issue on both laptops, which are setup the same with both McAfee and the router.
2: I don't know if there is a rollback feature.  The entire setup is new with a lot of new features.  My guess is that one of these new features is causing the issue.I faced an issue similar to your problem. And I think that the problem was caused by Software
I think you should re-examine
All the work that you have made (in addition updated McAfee). And get rid of all the step by step process to determine the cause of the problem.
And this includes the removal and re-install McAfee. Quote from: zf490 on March 21, 2010, 01:05:17 PM

Thanks for the tip.  I actually didn't do anything to cause the problem.  One day it worked fine, and the next it didn't.  In that time frame, all I had done was gone online to order text books and check EMAIL.  No programs were downloaded or installed, EXCEPT an automatic update to McAfee, which is why I believe that is the issue.  I can't find any rollback feature either.  I've already also tried to remove and re-install McAfee, and I have the same result.Unfortunately
After all these possibilities that you tried. re-install Windows. or recovery it

Solve : Need help to configure VoIP from different routers.?

Answer»

Dear Network professionals,

I have a QUESTION about using additional VoIP using Cablemodem connected with 2 other ROUTERS but i don't know whether it's possible to use adsl MODEM connected with cable modem. In order to illustrate clearly my problem and to get your advice, I have included the network connections layout as picture in this communication.

Thanks in advance,
Jeroen.
http://
I am not currently a network pro.
But I can tell you it is less hassle to tie two things together rather that three.
So six ports is not enough? You want  nine ports?
An 8 port  switch or hub can be BOUGHT for under $40 new!

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=8+port+switch+price&hl=en&cid=13030174570644789609&sa=title#p

So I would say that it is not worth the effort to try to reset the ADSL device you want to force into hub service.

But if you want to, you go into the ADSL thing and disable almost everything you can think of. DHCP,  firewall, WAN. And put the IP address INSIDE the range of the local network as a  client device.
I don't quite understand what you are trying to do with the Baricade and Copperjet routers.  Your home phone and voip is already coming off the cable modem.

I'm guessing you have one phone plugged directly into the cable modem and you are wanting to have all the phones in your home to be able to use the voip service.  Is that the case?

If that is the case, it will probably be easier to use the existing phone wiring in your home rather than trying to hook up three routers.  You would need to tie the phone line from the cable modem to the existing house wiring.  It could be as simple as taking a phone cable and plugging one end into the cable modem and the other end into an unused phone jack.

You can cascade three routers, but if you don't need to why do it?

Solve : Facebook lag??

Answer»
If my sister's PC (wired) is on the same LAN as me and I'm on wifi laptop (router) and she's watching a HD STREAM (480p) on YouTube and I'm trying to have a FaceBook chat, will her actions actually affect mine or add some lag to FB chat? I'd like to know.

I'm not sure but I think the web works with multi-threading of sessions (at least in most server side LANGUAGES?) so I don't know if that applies everywhere (meaning ONE thread not having problems of another thread's lag)? In TCP packets?

Anyway would like to know.

Cheers!
Treval
Streaming video will always take over the rest of the net by default as not to lag in realtime! This is really annoying when playing an online game, or on chat, etc. It will swallow most the bandwidth until fully loaded.

The best option is setting up quality of service (QoS) on your router. This will depend on your router to the quality and how to go about setting it up, but will be in a tab on the admin login. Can be complex to SETUP correctly also depending on the router.

There are varies types of QOS as well, so you need to find out the best option for you.

QOS basically adds numbers to the packets sent over the net, then you can give priority to some applications/ports over others or even computers. This way you can setup your games and chat, etc, to run before the video, websurf, and put last priority on emails, etc.

Facebook chat is however done with ajax so its all port 80 im afraid, so it's like normal websurf which is harder to give priority too.if your connected to the same router, you have to share that connection. The router sorta decides which connections are more important if your Internet connection is to slow to accomodate it all at once, sometimes you can change this via QOS in the router config (Quality Of Service).

thanks in advance Hi,

Just a couple of questions for you.

Does your Laptop have any wireless software installed from either Dell or your ISP?  Sometimes if there is other software installed to manage your wireless connections, the software and Windows XP's own wireless software get locked in a battle to control your wireless connection and neither side wins.  This is especially true if the wireless software is provided by your ISP.

Do you know if your sisters wireless network is hidden or not?

Cheers

Solve : Wireless Router and Wireless Network...HELP!!?

Answer»

Hello,
I just moved and I set up a desktop computer. It is a HP Pavilion a1510n. I had the internet connected the other day and it works fine, but I do need to set up a wireless NETWORK, that my laptop could connect to. The desktop runs on Windows XP and my laptop runs on Windows Vista.

I tried hooking up the router to the modem and computer and rebooting, but for some reason, my desktop does not recognize the router and thinks the ethernet cable is unplugged. Because of this, I cannot get internet on either computer when the router is plugged in.

Can someone please help me!! I've been trying to work on this for days!!

Thanks a lot!Hello, this is a quick reply. Just stick around and the be some other use or so come on in just a second.
First of all, welcome to computer help. This is absolutely the best place you can go for free help. And even for not free help, but it's free anyway.
Without the details I just have to give WILD guesses. I will assume you have a DSL modem that is just a plain modem without a router else into it. And I'll assume that you opt for wireless router and this is the first time you've tried it with a modem. If not, you'll need to give us the full details of why it worked before or how it worked before and then it will try to FIGURE out what it is you changed.
But in case it is a simple DSL modem and you're just not a router to it here's the problem. You might be using a cheap Motorola modem provided by your local telephone company. They do work, but not very well. In order to give you a quick answer I am just going to assume that you have a recent model of a D Link router. Even if that is not the case when I'm going to describe might apply to your situation.
That particular modem that I mentioned just likes to use an IP address that should be used for other things, like routers. So what's needed to is the disconnect the modem and the router, reset the router, restart your computer and talk to your router. You do that by typing in the IP address of the router in your favorite browser.
Once you get up into the router unit needed check and see what IP address it has. We are talking about the local IP address that uses for communications between your computer and the router. If this is the same IP address as the modem, then it has to be changed.
Example:
192.168.0.1         modem address, can not change
192.168.0.1        rooter address, must change

192.168.0.50       new address for router.
The above example is typical, but may not work in your case. Even if it is right, it can be awkward, because after you change the IP address for the router you can no longer access the router. So you have to restart your browser with the correct address before you can talk to the router again. If all GOES well, at this point you could plug the modem back into the router and you'll probably have to reset your computer again and allow the modem and router to talk to each other for a bit. Then you can go into the router, using the new address, and see if you can get the router to find the modem and tell you that it has a CONNECTION to the Internet. If you get that far and the router says there is an Internet connection you probably have it fixed.
Please bear in mind this was a quick reply to save you time. If your details are different than we have to start over. I'm going to have to take some time off for a bit, but somebody else will jump in here and help you if you have more problems.
Please excuse types. Just a quick answer. It should all be plug and play (the operating systems are irrelevant). Plug the modem into the router and an ethernet connection from the router to the desktop's NIC. If it doesn't work right away just reboot the router and if it still doesn't work go to Control Panel - Network Settings and try to "repair" the connection. What does Network Settings show as the available connections(s)?

Solve : no more connection can be made to this remote computer at this time?

Answer»

First, in my network, there are windows 7 and xp computers. One xp computer shares a folder with full ACCESS. That computer ip is 192.168.2.2. If I can call it on other xp computers, sometimes, it say that no more connection can be made to this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as the computer can accept. The same ERROR occur if i use "net view". But calling from windows 7 computers is always fine. Nothing happen. What is the problem?
Thz.1.  SHARED Folders.  From the Windows XP computer sharing the folder, use the "Computer MANAGEMENT" snap-in to monitor how many users are connected and who is connected to the shared resource.

To access:  Start -> right-click My_Computer -> MANAGE -> double-click to open Shared_Folders.

     d.  Windows XP SP2 and Event ID 4226I found that:
in Shares:  at ipc$ there are 10 client connections ever, i can't stop it
in sessions: many computer connect but even i disconnect it, it appears again after refresh. I made sure not to connect that computer.

All  computers showed in sessions are windows 7 computers.

Solve : How can I make Cisco Aeronet 340 card search for wifi sites??

Answer»

I have an OLD IBM laptop running Win2000.  My WIFI card is a Cisco Aeronet 340.  When at home it connects well to my router because the router's address and key is WRITTEN into its home profile.  But when travelling the card does not SEARCH for existing wifi sites even when only 30 ft from the transmitter.  What do I need to do to get the card searching for sites.  This card and software is old and no longer supported by Cisco and I am still LEARNING how to set it up.

Solve : WiFi stopped working out of nowhere.?

Answer»

My laptop is connected to the internet by Wireless Connection/WiFi, the WiFi was working just fine last night but ever since this morning it hasn't worked. I tried rebooting it, even bought a new wireless router and it still won't work. It found several other wireless routers but not the one that I'm using. When it's connected to directly connected to the router, it works fine but when it's not, it doesn't. I don't really know what to do, I'm extremely confused. And I've been trying to figure it out for over five hours now. If it matters: the laptop is a HP G61-429 Notebook and runs Windows 7.Have you reset the router (UNPLUG the router for half a minute then restore power)?Yes, I tried doing that a couple times. Hi there, have you tried to change the channel the router is using? Quote from: Diodon on March 17, 2010, 10:03:53 AM

Hi there, have you tried to change the channel the router is using?
What?Sorry what I meant was, did you try to change the channel of your Wifi card to a different one? There might be a conflict since some countries use different channels than OTHERS and some network adapters wont work with any other frequency then they are set to receive/send on. Did you try if the router's visible on a different PC? This could have happened if your router or PC were set to a compatible channel but one of them did restart to its default settings so they both work on a different frequency.

P.S: Had a laptop bought in AUSTRIA which I was using in Ireland and had to set the my network card to channel 11 otherwise I wasn't able to SEE my router (although other around were visible).

Hope it helps...

Solve : Internet Loading Slow?

Answer»

Just Last Nite. My Interent Has Been Moving Real SLow. Like Pages are Loading Extrememly Slow. ANy SUggestions? I Unplugged my Router and Modem & ALl The Basics & Still No Luck.

&

It When i First Hook My Router & Modem Back Up The Interent Moves Normal Speed. But It Slows Down After Like I Click Threw 1 Or 2 Pages....

Any Suggestions???sounds like a typical software ISSUE

To help isolate the issue, restart the computer, tap f8 until you see Advanced Boot Options..  Select Safe Mode with Networking

When it boots, browse the Internet and see if it's IMPROVED.. If it improves, it means you have a software problem and then we can proceed to hunt down the culprit.

If no improvement, it COULD still be a software issue, but starting out this way gives a good reference to your current state..1.  What type of Internet connection do you have?  (Satellite, DSL, Cable, Mobile Wireless, Dial-Up)

2.  Does your Internet Service Provider (ISP) limit how many "bytes" you may download and upload during a fixed or sliding thirty day window?

If so, you may have exceeded your limit and they have "throttled" you back in an attempt to modify your behavior (punishment).

Limit may depend upon your level of service - amount of money you pay.First step it to contact your ISP and make sure the problem is not on their end.No Allan, Safe Mode with Networking is the answer to everything  Hi,

Have you tried a different web BROWSER such as Firefox or Google Chrome just in case the problem is with you're browser.  I know my wife had a problem with Internet Explorer 8 loading very SLOWLY, so I switched her to Firefox and everything's fine.

Cheers
