you can set up internet connection sharing with an ad-hoc NETWORK linked to the WIRED ethernet through the computer(i own an iPhone 2G.)

Oh yes, this can be done. I personally use the (jailbroken) APP I posted above. Works a charm. You do realize this thread is about an iPod and not an iPhone. I also own an iPhone and know how to set it up both ways but since the OP is asking about an iPod I am not going to confuse the issue by using iPhone instructions. Just for clarification the iPhone does not have any cellular service.

Solve : router as "backwards" (wired) access point??

Answer»

Hi all, I handle the IT for a small business, and we have a networking trick I'm trying to figure out. We have a fairly STRAIGHTFORWARD network, with a cable modem connected to a Belkin wireless router, which then connects to a switch for the 10 or so wired computers in the building, and the router provides wifi access for our customers.

What I'm trying to do is install a wired network camera in a room that has no ethernet outlets. What I'd like to do is have a second router (I happen to have one handy) connect to the existing wifi network, and allow the camera internet access through an ethernet CORD CONNECTION. The camera does not have wifi.

I am completely open to buying another network device that will allow this to happen, but since there's an extra belkin router SITTING right here I thought I'd try it. The model of the router I have is F5D7231-4, just for the record. I know I could use a computer for this JOB, but it's in a public room and there's no good place to stash a computer nearby. I'm looking either for a way to use the extra router or else another device.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you all have to offer!

Regards,

MorganI've had a similar situation before-using a wireless router as a client for a wifi network.

Your router happens to be supported by the third party firmware DD-WRT.

Solve : having trouble with my router?

Answer»

My BT router is giving me trouble. It would work for 3 - 4 day's and then like to-night i had to switch it off and on 4 time's to get it to work.

It say's the dns sever is not responding.

I did a BT diagnostic test for configeration and it said my " usb connection was down " if this is so how can it work sometime's.

The problem has been going on for about 2 month's.Your ISP is likely changing equipment or configurations causing change in their DNS servers.
Don't know why your testing says:  "usb connection was down".
Reboot modem/router will usually fix it.
You can see if your Public IP has changed by looking at my signature.
capture is the window's check

capture 1, i click ADD because it doe's not show my router

See below

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]capture 2 , where do i find the information asked for about my isp

what do you think about capture 3 , the router doe's not seem to be listed. Is modem & router integrated (1 box)?  I can tell that's it's DSL, because it says PPPoE.
Can you ping router and/or modem?  You have to know their IP addresses.
At COMMAND prompt, type:  ipconfig /all
Copy & paste results here.
IP address is the computer.
Default Gateway, DHCP Server is the router
DNS Server is the ISP's.Thank's Computer_Commando, it's one box DSL.

sadly how do i ping

i tried ipconfig /all and a black box flash's on the screen for a second and it's gone.

 192.168.1.2 00:25:22:4C:86:6E br0 Dynamic

i think i have found the problem, see below

i think capture  no. 7 is the problem.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Capture 4 has some of the ipconfig /all info
Looked it up:  http://www.melissadata.com/lookups/iplocation.asp?ipaddress=217.47.207.250
Computer in online.
Your Public IP is shown in my signature.

I think you're right about Capture7.  It could be the modem/router that wants a username & password.  Is Voyager 210 the modem/router?
I'm no expert on DSL (I'm on cable) & I'm using WinXP.
Who owns the modem/router, you or BT?
I worked on someone's DSL modem & it did have built-in SECURITY requiring authorization by the user of ADDITIONAL routers that were connected to it.

Capture 5 & 6 look identical.

ping & ipconfig are entered into the Command Prompt window
Command prompt window is this:

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]is this the IP address i should fill in if i need to in any of the form's above, 217.47.207.250

I have found my name and password for BT so i will have to fill it into capture 7.

Voyager 210  ADSL router is the one i have.

BT own's the modem, i'm going to ask for a new one if i can't get this working.

In reply no.2, capture one, will have to add the router detail's as well. Quote from: harry 48 on July 18, 2011, 02:11:37 PM

Q:  is this the IP address i should fill in if i need to in any of the form's above, 217.47.207.250
A:  No.  Public IP's are assigned by the ISP.  LAN IP's are assigned by the Voyager 210.

My MOTHERBOARD and BIOs is not detected in Everest. And my chipset is also not detected. (I INSTALLED the drivers for the chipset and BIOs) So... can anyone help me connect to the internet? Solve : One particular webpage and its related webpages will not open?

Answer»

My internet is working fine except for any webpage related to my university. The university's webpage is www.bond.edu.au and any pages related to this URL will not open, including the online blackboard (http://ilearn.bond.edu.au/) and student email (https://webmail.bond.edu.au/ ). However, a few days ago my internet would not work at all EXCEPT for these pages. Then it STARTED working for all pages EXCEPT these. What's the deal?? I tried flushing my DNS cache and that didn't work, and I also tried to edit my 'hosts' file in the system32\drivers\etc folder but I couldn't FIGURE out how to edit it (it wouldn't allow me to) and I don't even know if that would work, I was just trying out what some websites suggested. I have a Dell Inspiron laptop, Windows 7 and to be honest I'm not sure what kind of internet I have... I live in a resort/hotel kind of place and the Ethernet cable just hooks straight up to the wall, no modem or anything. The PROVIDER is Allegro and normally I would contact them but they're almost impossible to get hold of... please help me, I really need to access my university's website...The first thought would always be using another browser for those websites. Second would be running a speedtest of your wired internet connection to ATLEAST give an approximate output and then asking hotel office staff about the particular. Try clearing browser cache or temp files.
http://kb.iu.edu/data/ahic.htmlThank you for the suggestions. I've tried using Firefox and IE, neither will load this one webpage. The speed of my internet is doing fine, I did a speed test earlier. I also have cleared my browsing history and cache... I guess all that there is left to do is contact the hotel internet provider, even if it's the biggest pain in the *censored*... ALAS...

Solve : Internet is extremely slow wirelessly and no internet with cable plugged in comp?

Answer»

i have a 1.5 mbps connection. however, when trying to connect to the internet using the cable directly PLUGGED into the onboard network adapter from the router, i can get no internet access at all.  and that is only the CASE with the cable going to my room.  I have CHANGED cables and changed ports on the router.  i have also tried using a network adapter.  nothing helped.  right now i am currently connected wirelessly by using my android phone's tethering capabilities.  but my speed is only getting around 25 kbps. and the speed i get with my laptop is the same when it is wireless.  however my two brothers are connected with a direct plugin to their computers and they get full speed.  i cant understand why my cable wont work with my computer or laptop.  and i cant understand why my internet speed is so slow wirelessly.  Please can someone answer one of those questions . i will appriciate any help at all.Did the current set up ever work correctly for you?
If it did what has changed that you know of?yes it has always worked before now.
and as far as im aware of, nothing has really changed that could have done this to my connectionI would suggest re-installing the drivers for the NIC and the protocols for both wired and wireless connection.
Uninstall the existing drivers FIRST, reboot and then install the drivers again.i have reinstalled the NIC drivers but im not sure what you meant by the protocol drivers .  i only have an intermediate knowledge with computers.  my brother OWNED a local ISP business and he cant figure out anything either .  ive even tried using ubuntu 10.10 but i encountered the same problem as i did on windows xp and windows 7

Solve : main PC can't see or find others?

Answer»

All was working fine about 2 months ago, Then I changed IP from a cable connection (roadrunner LIGHT) to Open range 4G system. My vonage device had trouble with open range and was very choppy most of the time. So I switched back to roadrunner (this time it's turbo - 15mb) I'm not sure that during the brief period of having open range if the computers could see each other. It could be that we never needed them too so I never looked into it.
So I watched a youtube video for setting up a home group when I discovered the problem. Everything is setup right as far as I can tell. Workgroup name is the same and each computer has it's own name.

Details;
main pc is a DESKTOP hardwired to internet running windows 7
then one laptop running Vista and another running XP
Both laptops have a strong signal and we can surf the net without issue on both of them.
But the main PC (desktop) doesn't see the laptops at all.
I want to be able to share files and print from the laptops as I was able to do prior to my switching internet providers.

Thanks in advance for any input.10 views but no replies? C'mon somebody has to have something.Did you setup your file sharing, printers before on these computers? Make sure everything is turn on for Network discovery and File sharing, and you must check if they belong to the same Workgroup. See here on how to set your Network again. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/share-files-and-printers-between-windows-7-and-xp/Well I gave up and called my computer repair man. He discovered that it is grabbing the wrong IP address. Trouble is that he can't figure out why. So the problem still exists, but at least I know why. Unless someone here has another suggestion I'm taking the tower in to him tomorrow.I was thinking that in between switching internet providers made certain IP addressing conflict from Dynamic to Static as required to VOIP while using File sharing as simply using Automatic IP and DNS can be obtained. Depending on how you have your ISP network setup, settings plus additional devices such as Vonage which requires a default IP address and Printer for network sharing, the TCP/IP for your LAN/WLAN ADAPTER properties will clearly give you as to what settings you are currently running.Ok, so what you gave me only makes a little sense to me, I'm just not well versed enough to UNDERSTAND everything you said.
I took the computer in to have it looked at and he tried something, but it didn't work, he needs to come out to my house and work on it where my network is at in order to fix it.
I'll show him this THREAD.

Solve : Home Network Setup?

Answer»

Having trouble and looking for the best way to setup my home network with what I have and the restrictions of my house.

Here are the network devices I have: Linksys Wireless-G Router (WRT54G3G-VN), a NetGear SWITCH (FS105), and a Linksys Wireless Access Point (WAP200).

Items that connect to the network:

Hardwired - Two PCs in the basement (call them PC-A, which is mine, and PC-B), PS3 (I know, it could very easily be connected via wireless, but I prefer it to be hardwired for some reason), and a connection for my house's security system.

Wireless - We have a few laptops, most of which are used in the "den". The Nintendo Wii is LOCATED up in the attic.

Here's the deal: Router is located in the basement, and it's wireless signal gets very weak in the den. So, my father bought the WAP200 to improve the signal. Because of placement issues (my mother wears the pants), my father placed the WAP200 in a spot in the basement directly under the den.

I never knew how to setup the WAP200 correctly, and it is showing. For a while, we had it working, but now we cannot connect to it or access the GUI. I cannot connect to 192.168.1.245. I can see that it has a strong signal, but cant connect.

The switch was purchased when we ran out of ports on the router for all of the hardwired devices.

When the WAP200 was being installed, I spoke with someone who told me that the I could either use it as an extension of my original Wireless Network or as it's own wireless network. I am going to assume I went with the second option, because when I view what networks are available, both show up. Name of the original network is Mandlebaum (seinfeld reference), and the network associated with the WAP200 is called linksys-G.

I really am in over my head with this. Too much stuff I don't know.

Please don't assume I have everything connected properly (in terms of the router, switch, and access point). More specifically, what's the best way to have this stuff connected? Which device should be the one that the modem is connected to, and where should I go from there?

Thank you very much for any help.

Update: I was able to access the GUI. Please advise on which mode would be best: Access Point, Repeater, or Bridge.
The modem goes to the router. The router goes to the AP. Busy PCs s get fed from the the router. From the router run a cable to the switch to service up the lessor PCs in the chain.

The scenario you describe seems to be a common problem. You have computers in one room that are wired directly to the router, but several wireless router does not have ENOUGH range to extend to the other rooms of your house. The principal problem is that walls , floors and CEILINGS of the house are made of material the swords the microwave energy coming from a wireless G. routers and bear in mind, and fees are intended to be low powered devices to avoid interference with the neighbors.

You can try moving the router around and finding a better position. But having three or four computers hardwired into the router makes it difficult to find the outcome position. So that's where your access point comes in handy. Try and get the access point as close as she can to the room that has the portable computers with wireless connection. The access point should be hardwired to the main router. Of course, it can be used as a wireless bridge if you're not able to rap that much cable around the ceiling or floor of your basement.

I'm going to refer you to an article that appeared in PC WORLD. Hopefully it won't blow you away with all the detail they give. Here's one little detail you need to be aware of. Your local network consists of computers that have local IP addresses all within very tight range. Typically, they will be assigned an IP address inside a range of about 50 possible addresses. The router, the wireless access point, and any other wireless devices such as printers and game consoles also have to be inside that there are range of addresses.

Here is a potential problem:
192.168.0.1     The access point default IP
192.168.1.254   The modem IP.
Can you see the problem? The modem and the AP (access point) have addresses that are too far apart. A modem, I believe, has a fixed address that can never be changed. But you can change the address of the router and the access point so that they lie within the same range of addresses.

Actually, the modem does not have to be inside the range of addresses that will be assigned by the router. But it has to be inside the range of addresses that the router can see..Normally in a home network environment a specified a mask will allow a subset of about 253 something addresses. The address  254 is for the modem. Your router may use a  block of addresses from100 to 150 as the DHCP assignments.  But the router can "see" anything from 1 to 254 .

If you have a thing that is outside of that range, like the game console, it could be addressed to a low address in the same block. N normally all the PCs will make use of the DHCP feature of the router. But if you're going to do online games, you might want to use a fixed address for a PC that's going to be in a game.

As for the access point, you'll need to bone up on the documentation. I never have quite figured out how to set up the access point. I have one, and whenever I hook it up, it seems to know what to do and does it by itself. I can't help you very much there. Here is the reference to the PC World article.

Solve : My XP Will Not Connect To The Internet Wired Or Wireless?

Answer»

Hello,
I have tried to connect my computer with the ETHERNET port and not connectivity. I have tried with a wireless connection...no connectivity. I have purchased 3 wireless adapters still nothing. I do not know what to do. Please help me. (I'm on my daughter's laptop and she is wireless and connects wired and/or wireless. Please help  Did it ever work? If so, what is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new HW, new sw, virus, error, etc)? If not, please provide some background and info on the system.

Also, please look in device manager. Are there any errors?Yes it has worked...up until last week. I put avast antivirus. Sorry Alan. The only "new" is avast and SuperAntiSpyware. Then uninstall Avast and REPLACE it with a different AV. Let us know what happens. Why would avast be the problem? Ok I will uninstall it....I have no idea. But do not uninstall it without installing a different AV. Do not run your system without an AV.This doesn't make any sense. I have avast on 4 computers and they are all fine. In fact the computer that I'm on has avast. Ok let me see what the computer is doing.
.....
Just like I knew would happen..... still no connectivity...We need to eliminate anything new before we go any further. Okay, feel free to reinstall Avast. Now please check device manager for errors.I do have an error.

You give it what the proper security password?  You may have to have you DTS check and make sure that you are able to connect through the WiFi for security reason they may have only a certain list of systems that can.

Solve : ip classes?

Answer» HI everyone
is there an application that use e & d class of IP
I doubt that consumer-class networks will use the D and E classes-
[IP Address Class E and Limited Broadcast
The IPv4 networking standard defines Class E addresses as reserved, meaning that they should not be used on IP networks. Some research organizations use Class E addresses for experimental purposes. However, nodes that try to use these addresses on the INTERNET will be unable to communicate properly.]

[IP Address Class D and Multicast
The IPv4 networking standard defines Class D addresses as reserved for multicast. Multicast is a mechanism for defining groups of nodes and sending IP messages to that group rather than to every node on the LAN (broadcast) or just one other node (unicast).
Multicast is mainly used on research networks. As with Class E, Class D addresses should not be used by ordinary nodes on the Internet.]

These classes are only used for research.

Solve : Any thoughts??

Answer»

Ok we upgraded our AT&T dsl service from 768kbps to 6.0mbps. 2 months ago.

and since then, sporiadicaly, my dsl light starts blinking green, and sometimes goes RED, but only when i actualy do something like if im downloading and talking on SKYPE or if i am browsing and click a link.... and i loose connection and have to restart my browser. i guess this is known as a sync issue or intermittent connection.

i called techsupport like 50 TIMES in teh last 2 weeks, and they did every single test they have, also they replaced my ports, modem, wires, cables etc. and i still have this problem.

and a funny thing, i thought this was a win 7 issue so i downgraded to xp and i still had the problem, except when i used xp, my dsl connection was 3.4 mbps isntead of 5.7 with windows 7....(i dont know why everythings the same and i had xp updated too)

so i formatted my pc few times today and still no luck, i tried wired and wireless, and still no luck. and ATT tech support did everything they can, they suggest i subscribe to their advanced tech support for an additional 12 dollars a month to get support for this issue.....

why the *censored* do i have to pay extra to fix a problem that is theirs?

so just throwing this out there hope someone can help, if not ill install time warner cable road runner on tuesday

Forgot to say, im using windows 7, 4gb ddr3 ram, amd x2 555 processer 3.2ghz, and the dsl modem is a 2wire wireless gateway. If you want to give them another chance, you could try here:  http://www.dslreports.com/forums/58If they have replaced your modem and internal wiring, the problem has to be in their outside plant, and could be hard to TROUBLE shoot and could be very expensive to fix.  Frankly, at this point I would go with Time Warner.hey funny thing now, i dont want to screw my chickents before they hatch, but i took off my wireless adapter and just connected with ethernet cord, after a fresh install of win 7, and so far it seems to be doing good.....

so i wonder maybe if somethings wrong with my wireless adapter....

but the thing is, i can connect to my apartment PUBLIC wifi just fine (its slow as *censored* though) and i download on that and i dont loose connection, so idk....

internet can be a tricky monster....

Solve : XP to Win7 Printer Sharing?

Answer»

I have a HOME network setup with my Desktop running XP and My Laptop running Win 7.  I am sharing a printer which is hooked up to the desktop.  All the files are shared and this works just fine, when I try to add the printer to my network i get a message telling me that an inf file is missing.  Where can I find this file?  Printer is HP photosmart 7700.Install the printer the normal WAY on both desktops. Use the CD that came with the printer. In Windows print sharing, some dies are needed EVEN on the guest PC.But the Windows 7 host does not have the right files to give to the XP machine.

The workaround is to already have the printer installed on both machine before sharing ins started.

The LINK below explains another way to do this, But you have to DIG down to find it, When you install a printer in Windows 7 you are given the chance to include drivers for other OS on your network. Otherwise, each XP user has to find the drivers.

Solve : Wireless internet in xp password error?

Answer»

hello to everyone... i am trying to get my dell latitude laptop (running XP) to connect to a password secured wireless network
i an in the wireless network properties, and i type in the password, but when i click OK, it pops up with an error saying:
"the network password needs to be 40bits of 104 bits depending on your network configuration. this can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 to 26 hexadecimal characters"

what do i need to do for it to accept a 10 letter password (ex. tenletters)

please... HELP is wanted
thanks in advance for any repliesFirst of all, your router is configured to use WEP security, which only allows "5 or 13 ascii characters." That said, there are 2 versions of WEP, WEP 64-bit and WEP 128-bit. Wikipedia: "A 128-bit WEP key is almost always entered by users as a string of 26 hexadecimal (base 16) characters (0-9 and A-F)..." that means your password has to be EXACTLY 26 characters. If you want 10 letters/characters, you need to use either WPA/WPA2 as security. "10 to 26 hexadecimal characters" refers to the password requirements for WPA/WPA2 security. On the network properties... it is seleted as WEP, and there are no other options for me to SELECT on the pull down menu...
it is either WEP or Disabled, and with disabled, it will not let me enter a passwordWell, you need to set a 5-character or 13-char password-WEP only supports that. Quote

i am trying to get my dell latitude laptop (running XP) to connect to a password secured wireless network
What laptop model and Win XP service pack are you running? Did it work on other secured, open or home network?
Quote
the network password needs to be 40bits of 104 bits depending on your network configuration
it is seleted as WEP, and there are no other options

Its possible that your network adapter do not support or is not compatible with the router configuration WPA/WPA2, mixed mode settings. Here are some possible solutions.
Open up user control panel or my computer and find the area where a hardware DEVICE manager lists all the devices on your computer and find your wireless adapter. Disable the end remove the drivers.
Next reboot your computer and install the wireless adapter drivers over again from the disk provided by the manufacturer. Do not let Windows manage the wireless adapter, instead you want to use the software that comes with the wireless adapter to manage the way it selects access points and passwords. The software from the manufacture should make it clear whether you use  ASCII or hexadecimal. The preference is to use hexadecimal, does it offers a wide range of possibilities for a password.
Also might consider accessing your router from another computer and disabling security temporarily. This is to check to see if the computer is able to connect to the router at all. Sort of thing has happened before to MANY Windows XP users and it really is a nuisance. Sometimes after reinstalling the wireless network COMPLETELY, and doing a reboot, and starts behaving normally. Try it and see.
my computer is a dell latitude PP01L (C600) and it is running Microsoft Windows XP professional 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600 and i am using a US Robotics 802.11g wireless turbo adapter.
I have the software from the US Robotics card and it is not wanting to run... whenever i start the program i get a error sound from the computer and it does not openOkay. So it seems that your Dell laptop does not get along with the US robotics wireless adapter. There was an issue with XP version 2 that was fixed in the version 3 update. But obviously you don't want to go to service pack three, and I don't blame you.
Here is the best recommendation that I know how to give. Just go get another USB adapter. They're not very expensive, and you don't really need an expensive one to connect. They all work about the same. One good choice would be Net Gear. But almost anything will do, even the off brand ones. Maybe you could borrow one from a friend and see if it works on your computer .
If you go to a local store and pay the full retail price they might let you return the item if it doesn't work for you. That's one of the advantages of dealing with a local retailer. You pay more, but you get satisfaction.

Solve : security for my home network?

hello

I use DSL modem/hub, "Planet ADE-4400 ", for connecting to internet and share it in my home.
my problem is that:
some friends come to my room, un-plug a network cable and plug his/her network cable and connect and use my internet and network. they can access to shared folders in any PCs.

physical protection may harm our friendship. thus I need another method for protection an level-up our security.

so, my question is:
how can I block them to access my network? physical protection is last way to do.

thanks

How about talking to your friends and asking them to stop?yes, I can ask them to stop,
but
it is better to level up security of my home network.

a day will coming that someone access my network that he/she is not my friend.Turn off DHCP, CHANGE the IP range to something like 192.168.111.XXX.
Change the gateway (the internal router address) to 192.168.111.222.
Static IP on all your devices.
Use a non admin account on all computers in house so IP can't be seen by a passerby.

I know there's more, but without KNOWING the device that will probably stop it.

HELP!!! Seriously. This is getting crazy.

Have you tried unplugging the router and waiting 30 seconds or so and then plugging it back in. You can also do that with the modem and the router. Unplug the router and then the modem. Wait a minute or so and the plug the modem in first and then the router and then GO try the internet again. Beings that you have a good connection according to your post you may just have to re-boot the router, or the modem or both. It can't hurt to try that it can only help.Hi,

Like all other hardware devices connected to your PC, even Belkin router connected to the system requires drivers to function. Drivers are the link between the routers and the Operating System and problems with the drivers can cause connection to BREAK. All Belkin router users having the router disconnecting automatically issue are suggested to check the router drivers installed on the system using the device manager. If the drivers are found incorrect/illegitimate or outdated, they would have to be replaced to solve the ISSUES and get the router working properly.michelsmith, routers... are not connected to the computer in any way except for ethernet/wifi. ethernet drivers are built in... and it is obvious that missrose has her wifi drivers up and working.
missrose, how does your modem connect to the internet? through pppoe? if you connect your computer directly to the modem do you need to dial-up? etc.
it would greatly help if you could post your router make and modem make here...

Solve : Wireless signal keeps fluctuating?

Answer»

Hello,

I am writing because my wireless n network is now acting bizarre! Starting yesterday my network speed has been jumping from its normal rate 144.0 mbps all the way down to 6.5 mbps.  The equipment I have is a Wireless N E2000 Linksys router and a Wireless N USB THUMB Drive AE1000. I tried upgrading to the most recent firmware on the Linksys website but that hasn't helped me either. I haven't added anything to my network nor changed any settings to provoke this problem. My only guess is that a nearby router in the condo complex I live is disrupting my network?

Is there a way to change my frequency or something? To one that most PEOPLES routers probably would be on?  Sorry if that sounds nooby im just really amateur when it comes to networking.Somme RESEARCH shows many people do not believe in global warming. Yet these same people will believe the advertisements for Wireless N routers.
The fact is, wireless N rooters can not guarantee the speed of your connections. That is a little known factoid.
Still, you can log into your rooter and change the default frequency. There are 11 choices n North America and parts of Europe. The overlap, so going up or down by one may not help much.
Your PC will find the new frequency after a bit. and then remember it.
---
EDIT. Yes that is rather negative remark.  Here is the basis for my dim viewpoint:
http://www.eetimes.com/design/microwave-rf-design/4019005/The-future-of-wireless-networks-understanding-802-11n
The article is three years old and THINGS have not really got much netter.
The answer is to have two or more wireless AP units in your network to improve coverage. An economical router can be used as a AP if  it is indoors.Well when something goes from being 140mbps for a year straight to 6mbps there is something drastically wrong. Would one of the large CME's from the sun be a contender to the possible problem? We have had quite alot of solar activity lately.Multipath reference.**

That is possible. In general, problems with Ei-Fi are related to materials in the signal path and less often interference form other electronic devices.
However, just making a guess does not help solve the problem.

20 Myths of Wi-Fi Interference
Quote

Conclusion
There are many myths about the obstacles to high-performing and reliable WLAN services. A MISUNDERSTANDING of the nature Wi-Fi interference underlies many of these myths, as does the belief that better visibility into RF spectrum is a difficult and costly proposition. In fact, the idea that RF spectrum visibility is prohibitively difficult and expensive to achieve may be the most malicious myth of all.

I concur with that last point. You just can not generalize the issues. Modern technology now does things that before wee near impossible. Spread-Spectrum and Multipath are scientific disciplines in UHF communication.

In your case, it is possible that your equipment has degraded. It happens. More often than one would think. I suggest you investigate this by use of new devices. They do not have to be expensive. Thanks for the myth site.  I feel it is somewhat correct however I did what it said wont help and switched to the 5ghz frequency for my router and now im hitting between 300mbps : 243mbps. I found a nice little program called "insidder" which displays detailed information about other 802.11 networks in the area (there are indeed many around me), I live in a condo complex. I noticed when I checked the 5ghz tab in the program it only displayed one so I changed my router settings to 5ghz.

Thanks for you input on my problem it seems relatively solved

fyi to get the insidder program to display results you need a plug in called Chanalyzer (its an .msi file)Thank you for sharing that. Apparently many of you neighbors have recently went wireless. Many others say the tool you found relay helps. Have not tried it myself.

Right the situation is that I want to get file sharing going between a Mac OS X laptop and a several Windows 7 PC's. But I can't even get Windows to show the Mac as even connected to the router. Help

I realise that there are a lot of google results on the matter but most relate to mac to windows problems, and as I've already said I'm a Mac idiot. Solve : To set up a wireless guest network?

Answer»

For our our college project we need to set up a wireless guest network.

Now the wireless router is to be connected to the routerA which handles all the internal network connections too.

And this routerA is given internet access.

We can seperate the internal N/w And Wireless netwrk by putting them in different VLANs right

Is this idea correct? or is there any better ways?

Thank YouYou should have a separate Internet Service Provider connection. Ask you local provides if they will help you with your project. Maybe they want the publicity.

Otherwise you IT administrator has to come up with a way to have a separate LAN that can get into your internet gateway without ALSO getting into the college network. It is security issue. Its a project wherein we have our entire architecture setup, we are simulating a organization setup.

The setup REQUIRES a Wireless guest n/w.

Its a simulation. We are not DESIGNING or MODIFYING the college setup we are just having our own lab setup done over here.
Git it. A simulation. You can set up a machine as a server and have it pretend to be the World Wide Web.  You COULD use a Linux distribution as the server, thus no need to invest big bucks in a simulation. You want proof of concept and experience. You need to discuss this with your teacher as we don't usually help with home work.

Geek,

If you are feeling like doing school work how about you go back to school instead of doing other peoples work for them.

Solve : How to gain information about a wifi connection that has appeared.?

Answer»

I am on a military operation in a country that has below average infrastructure. The force that I am with provides a PASSWORD protected WIRELESS internet connection. Recently another option has appeared, that is not password protected.

First question: How do I find out information about this connection. Such as who owns it.

Second question: What information can it rip from me if I use it?Dont use it for any surfing requiring anything important. You cant get infected with anything unless you chose to execute a script etc. I would use wireshark to sniff what else is on the network. Also what type of location are you in, such as are you by another residence or hotel, or business which may have a real wifi service. There are some evil free wifi's out there to bait people and spoof you up FAKE pages to steal info, as well as monkey in the middle attacks where someone offers up a wifi and waits for someone to attach and then they sniff packets for information, and probe for open ports, and try exploits against the joined system to try to access a system that is not patched to latest updates and is VULNERABLE, or has a weak or non existent firewall set up. Also set up a USER account on your system with USER privileges instead of ADMIN privileges which most home users run all the time and get nailed. USER account privileges will protect from infections as long as there are no exploits to run higher privileges in USER mode.

Answer # 1 - You wont get much info on WHO owns it

Answer # 2 - I wouldnt use it if you already have a secure method of connecting. You can have a monkey in middle attack on you if you connect! In your CASE use of vPN would be recommended. There are Wi-Fi systems that use VPN. It requires special software.

Solve : RECOMENDATIONS ON A NEW INTERNET PLAN AND ROUTER PLEASE??

Answer» HELLO,

I have a house of 3 Computers (Dell Desktop, HP desktop, Mac Book laptop) , And iPod touch 4gen, a Nintendo Wii, And an Xbox 360 winch all connects to the Router in the upstairs Corner ROOM (this current router connects to the Dell). The Hp Is 1 room over, and runs wirelessly using a Net GEAR WIRELESS adapter. The thing is, I cannot receive Connection downstairs on the opposite side of the house. The House is a colonial type, like the size of a normal raised ranch. I was wondering what i need to do to get the internet connection at a larger range

Current Router:
http://lh3.ggpht.com/-rubhPrU1kgE/SdRiJ01LSjI/AAAAAAAAAd8/gVjRzUmKHOc/Router.jpg   (its a picture)

HP and Dell Run on Windows 7 Ultamite

Currently Have the following plan: DSL Basic by AT&T

Link to plan: http://www.att.com/dsl/shop/plansShared.jsp?requestid=2753317sorry, the current router is conencted to the dell, like by a ethernetThe general recommendation is to install addition  Ethernet cable in the house. Yes, you want wireless, but extending wireless beyond just two rooms may not work well. Two wireless units connected by Ethernet would be needed to give full wireless coverage. The main router does WAN and DHCP.

An alternative to Ethernet cable is Network over Power LINES. This can be more costly that installing more Ethernet cable. The advantage is the existing house wiring is used. I have no info on this.

Also, routers can be set up as 'repeaters' or dependent AP devices that relay the signal from then main wireless router. Many routers do NOT have this feature and you hare to investigate before you buy.

Personalty, I have never been able to do the wireless only repeater. Yet others say it is easy. Here is a link that may provide more information about wireless repeaters for home use.

Solve : Router with USB Port?

Answer»

Good morning everyone,

My current router has to be changed because it keeps disconnecting my laptop (wireless) and my PC (directly plugged into router) every 5 minutes or so.
Thing is, I have a Western Digital external hard drive that I'd like to have access to from anywhere in my apartment (and from any laptop and PC that might be in it).

So I was wondering, if I get a router with a USB PORT, can I simply plug the external HDD in it and it will act as a server; meaning I will be able to access it from anywhere? Any brands or model to recommend? I don't REALLY want to go over 100$ here...

Thanks for your time!

Network Attached Server is what you want.  This is one I could find for less than $100.
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2376756,00.aspThanks for your reply, Computer_Commando!

I was just wondering, the item you sent me, does it acts as an Internet router as well? Because I can only see one ''network cable port'' in the pictures and I NEED at least 2!No, it's not a router.  Read this:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network-attached_storage
You can buy complete NAS devices, but they are more than your budget.

Solve : slow Browsing?

Hello
my Internet SPEED 512 kbps . in this period I have suffered from very slow in  Browsing - even Google - abut little of the local sites are working normally. .
I measured the speed of the Internet   http://www.speedtest.net/   - no problem

What do you mean? I mean that the page does not appear - white page -
Or error appears in the page load
example :
The connection was reset
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
The connection was reset
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
The site COULD be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Note: I do not use proxy

Now, we're talking about the "measurement process".  So, are you saying you got all these error messages when trying to run speed TESTS? It sounds like you have  an intermittent connection somewhere.  It could be somewhere INSIDE your house or a problem with your ISP.  You need to trouble shoot the problem ONE step at a time.

How do you connect to the internet?  Cable or DSL modem, wireless or wired router, etc.?Do this error comes only on a particular website and on what browser? You could also try checking your firewall/3rd party and security softwares settings such as antispyware, malware, web scanners, Adblock or antivirus. - I think that there is no break in communication. I use DSL modem
- For softwares  I do not think that the problem of them. Did not change anything in them

Solve : Horrid Ping problems?

Answer»

Hey guys

I have been having this ping problem for the last week or so
While playing online GAMES from here in Australia at 8am my ping to the states is around 230 within 2 hrs my ping starts to climb by 50-80 every half hr, so by  LUNCH time my ping is over 500 and it stays that way for around 14hrs  i dont lose speed or anything ,it sits at around 4.5 mbps
I did a traceroute and i think the problem lies in Hong Kong
What can i do to fix this ?
My service provider has told me there is nothing they can do
any help with this would be very much appreciated ISP's usually USE "backhaul" providers to go long distances, especially from country to country.  That's probably where your problem is.  You need to test your speed from Australia to the US to see what kind of speeds you are getting.  A test site in Australia for speed won't give you an accurate speed for going overseas.

And if that's the case, there is usually something your ISP can do to fix the problem, although it may cost them some money.I have done the ping & download test at speedtest.net and while i get a ping of 649 in game my speed  to Dallas TX (same place as game server) i get a ping of 255 & download of 3.85mbps up of 1.86 mbps
But speedtest would not follow the same  route as my service provider does Quote from: Graz on May 31, 2011, 01:13:47 AM

Why not?

As long as you pick a Speedtest server in the same geological area as you game server, it should follow the same or very very similar route.

You should do a tracert to the IP ADDRESS of the server of whatever game you're playing. A lot of online games use servers that are in different LOCATIONS, so make sure you're pinging the game server itself, and not something like their log in server.

Solve : My laptop has an Internet Connection but will not open a web page?

Answer»

I have been having this issue for a while and I cannot seem to get it working. My laptop says I have internet, everything is at a default setting and nothing has been changed that I know of. I have a internet connection until I open my browser and then I notice that it changes to no internet for a brief second and then it cancels the load on the web page and then it says I have internet again. Very frustrating. Any one have any ideas on what my problem could be? Could it be my ISP, or just my laptop?

Also my desktop runs perfect on the internet and I have tried reseting my router and running a hardline to my laptop as WELL and it still hasn't worked. How are you connecting to your laptop? Wired or wireless? Does it happen on both connections? What particular browser did you USED and have you tried using another one? You could try direct connecting first to your ISP modem to check the difference. Another one is to take your laptop and connect it to another location and connect it wired or wireless. Check for any installed web SCANNERS, phishing filters installed and try disabling or REMOVING them.I would suggest going to the laptop manufacturer website and see if there is a network driver NEWER than the version your currently have.

Solve : internet through phone?

Answer»

i have the samsung rouge. i noticed that it had modem capibilities so i downloaded vz access MANAGER. i installed the drivers for the phone from samsung .com. i restarted the comp. then when i went to connect to the verizon connection and it said it : cnnection failed-connection not available. then i tried it through the windows network connector in the tray it said the the remote access connection manager service could not start. so i went to services and tried to start it manually and it was part of a group and there were services that needed to be running. so i checked TELEPHONY : it was running. the i checked the secure socket tunneling protocol service: it was not running and would not start. so i set the services to automatic at start up and the connection will still not work.  The computer is a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 BIT laptop.  Please Help Me. Check with Verizon that you actually have a plan that includes a data connection. If not, that would be the first problem.

Most providers will give you some guidance on how to make it work as well, so while you've got them on the phone...I want to know first why the remote access connection manager and secure socket tunneling protocol services WONT start. then i will check with verizon if i have a plan that includes data connectionI checked and i have a data plan

Solve : Dos Net command to remove user connections from a PC with Shared files?

Answer»

Need to know if there is a dos net command to remove connected users from a PC with shared files but the user has nothing open.
If there is, I want to create it in a batch command and schedule it to run every hour on the shared PC so that it will automatically disconnect those users.  I'm running Windows XP pro but there is a limit of 10 users.  Sometimes People will connect, open a shared file, close it but then not disconnect which MAY prevent others from logging in. Quote

Any file, print, NAMED pipe, or mail slot session that does not have any activity is automatically disconnected after the AutoDisconnect time has expired; the default for the AutoDisconnect time is 15 minutes. When the session is disconnected, one of the ten connections becomes available so that ANOTHER user can connect to the Windows XP system. Therefore, lowering the AutoDisconnect time can help to reduce some of the problems that users may encounter with the ten-connection limit or the five-connection limit on a system that is not USED heavily for server purposes.

You can configure the AutoDisconnect time by running the following command from a command prompt:
net config server /autodisconnect:time_before_autodisconnect
Specify the time in minutes.

Solve : Wireless Internet connection lost?

Answer»

I suspect due to storm surge, I have lost wireless connectivity to laptop.  ISP to Modem then to Linksys WRT54G router.  If connect laptop directly to modem everything is fine.  I can also ESTABLISH a new connection I think called linksys but then haven't yet found how to set up encryption and all the associated stuff for new connection.  I am seeking assistance in merely re-establishing the connection the has been in PLACE for several years.

The re-booting does nothing, the disable, enable does nothing, the factory re-set does nothing.  That is about the extent of my computer knowledge.   Assistance is appreciated. One way to check your wireless card is to check on ANOTHER OPEN wireless connection or a hotspot. Also checking your hardware STATUS under device manager, reinstalling the driver, managing wireless network connectivity and your wireless network settings. That can be bug issue for security purpose. You may contact from Managed Network Services for more info and help.
