Solve : Internet randomly shutting off for seconds? Help please!?

Answer»

My internet has episodes where it will just turn off and on for a couple of seconds.  It happens on my new Mac, my mom’s old dell laptop, and a homemade desktop that runs Windows Vista.  The laptops are connected through a wireless connection and the desktop through ethernet.  It seemingly happens at random times no matter what I’m doing.  When it happens, I see my Mac’s airport searching for a connection for a couple of seconds and then it goes back to.  For the desktop sometimes it SAYS its connected locally only but not on the internet.  I have to refresh/resend what ever I’m doing at the time to continue what I was doing.  These episodes are never long, just maybe 5 seconds if that, but it still interrupts what I’m doing and totally messes it up.

Examples -

For a simple task like checking my Facebook, it’s simple as just refreshing the page again.  However when it comes to downloading updates for my computer, it will stop a couple minutes through and say I am not connected to the internet.  When this happens, I’ve never noticed my Mac searching for a connection - it says I already have one.  Regardless I’m sure it’s the same problem causing the scenario.

While video chatting on Skype it will just totally DISCONNECT saying the connection was lost.

While streaming a live radio show via the internet, it will CUT off while I’m listening, and sometimes it won’t even start back up even when I attempt to reconnect to it.  When it does, it will stream for not even a song’s length and stop again.

While trying to play League of Legends, (a PVP game you download to your computer), it will search for a match forever, but when I cancel the search it says I’m in a game and can’t back out, but it never actually joins.  If I wait a minute try canceling the search again it cancels as NORMAL.  If I join a custom game, very often I will see no chats, until send a chat and then all the chats that were sent from other people during this episode of internet wackyness will come up.  I can never connect to a custom game.  I understand this could be my antivirus/firewall causing this problem, but I think it’s the internet.

I have no problems when trying to play xbox live on the 360.  It says my nat setting is not “Open”, but other than that nothing is wrong.

Please note this is not a problem with my antivirus/firewall(although it may be for the PVP game).  This happens on all 3 computers for various tasks.

I use a Verizon modem/routerGT704WG all in one unit (not the gt704wgB).

If anyone has any knowledge/advice/information/solutions I would be extremely grateful for your time and effort with the utmost appreciation.  Thank you.  You say this happens on a wired ethernet connection as well. This would lead me to believe the problem is with your modem, router, or signal from the cable company. Have you reset both the modem and router? If so, do you have another router you can try just as a test - OR - connect the desktop directly to the modem (bypassing the router) and see if the problem continues. It's a modem/router combo all in one unit.  Resetting it/ turning it off then on fixes problems when it's down for a long time, but most of the time (seemingly random), it just shuts down for a couple seconds then comes up again.  I use to have a different modem and router that were 2 separate units and I believe the problem still occurred then, but that was years ago and I'm not certain.   Well, since it APPEARS the problem is with either the signal or the modem / router (which I assume is provided by your ISP), I think you should contact your provider.i have same problem with you...logging in skype or yahoo messenger is really hard...i got connected then its said disconnected...internet unknown and access denied...how can i fix this?please help if anyone know's about this....how to make a connection strong and fast...thank you so much!

Solve : PPPoE and DSL?

Answer»

I will start out by saying that I live on a circus, and we move every 3 months, which means that we have many different types of connection to the internet on each lot.  Broadband always, but sometimes one modem and sometimes a modem and a router, whatever the phone company guys are putting out in their area.  In addition, I'm in Japan, so information about hardware is hard to come by, not only because my technical Japanese is pretty bad, but also because kanji is freaking hard.

So, my intent here is to get some specific information about connections.  I have computers running Windows 98, which did fine with dial-up those many years ago, but since broadband became the thing, I was advised to use ROBERT Schlabbach's excellent raspppoe to make the 98's work with the modem.  I don't know for sure, but I believe that the first connections we got were DSL, and there was no problem with the connection.  Now, however, I know my broadband isn't DSL because the phone guys took the DSL filter off the phone lines when phone lines were hooked up.  I just spent a very long time trying to make that system work with no satisfactory result, up to and including uninstalling the adaptor and letting Windows reinstall it.  The PPPoE protocol was installed several times, the dial-up connection was created, but dialling in always resulted in an error MESSAGE that the computer I was trying to call in to wasn't answering.

So, I guess my question is: is this PPPoE protocol only useable with DSL connections?  And does anyone have another SUGGESTION regarding an interface that will let my 98's get on the web?

As always, waiting with bated breath for your thoughts.  Thank you. Quote from: mizhepzibah on June 08, 2011, 10:04:46 AM

Solve : Home Networking Setups?

Answer»

Got the idea to do this from the Feb poll, and kinda thought that it was time for a new poll as Feb is a long way away...

Basically fill out the poll above, then post below exactly how your setup is wired. Or upload a network map!

My Setup starts below this line
_______________________________________ _______________________________________ _____________________________________

My house is Mainly wired, the only wiring I use is Cat6, although I have some Cat7 running between my servers and one switch for extra high speed! I have a Central Point in the attic, with all my cabling BRANCHING out around the house. A minimum of 2 access points in each ROOM. Wireless access points installed into parts of the wall that have been left empty since the initial build, and then covered with plastic mesh covers.

4 Wireless access points in total, I haven't worked it out exactly - but i reckon about 130 network ports around the place. I have 3 servers running with alot of virtualisation in place to distribute live tv, music, video and picture libraries around the house. Plus all my voice transfers are done over the ethernet connections. I have part home automation also done over the network, and media devices in all rooms - all controllable by any computer with Windows Media Player 12 on.

Been like this for 2 years now... was all installed myself.Thanks Allan for moving It - Me not thinking!Wireless B/G router in the center of the house. Computer or other device in nearly every room except the bathrooms (just haven't got to them yet).

Have a laptop in the kitchen for recipes and music (my second passion is cooking after computers). An HP Windows Mobile device (wifi connected, non-phone version) for reading and mail NEXT to the bed (gets toted into the master bathroom sometimes). A laptop in the guest room. A DESKTOP in the office we use for records of our three businesses (computer repair, translation/interpretation/language teaching, and a bag shop), an Android-based tablet running Desktop Remote to control the multimedia computer in the living room, my Galaxy Tab which gets dragged EVERYWHERE, and the two computers my girlfriend and I use for gaming in the nerd room.

Solve : No Wi-Fi after Format?

Answer»

I just formatted my computer and now the only trouble I'm having is getting the wifi to work. The computer is a Dell Inspiron E1505. The Wi-Fi is Enabled but the Wi-Fi Catcher Network Locator is not. Can you tell me where to start or how to fix it?.
My laptop is a Dell 1705, which is very much like yours. Recently I installed XP again, but a slightly different version. It was a Dell windows XP disc, but for some reason did not have all the drivers for this laptop.
Going to the Dell website, and using my service tag number, I was able to locate the driver set. But even then it TOOK awhile to find the exact drivers in the set. Maybe you have a problem like that.
But one other thing. Is the Wi-Fi LIGHT on? On my laptop it turns on or off with Fn F2. Check your keyboard and find the little thing that looks a radio tower.Did you INSTALL ALL drivers after the format, starting with the chipset driver? Look in Device Manager - any errors?

Solve : PC always starts up in "Unidentified Network"?

Answer»

Lately, one of my PCs running Vista has been connecting only to "Unidentified Network" upon START up. The only way I can restore the Wifi connection is to manually reboot the modem and router.

It is only happening to this PC. My iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and other Laptops/Desktop Running Windows 7 connect just fine. The one running Windows Vista is having the problem and this was just recently. No programs or changes were made to this computer recently. I tried manually assigning it a specific IP address, but it still would start up to the Unidentified Network. My SSID is broadcast and is on a WPA Security which is compatible with the wireless adapter.

It is using a Linksys Wireless G with SpeedBooster Wireless Adapter.

The Router I use is a Linksys E3000 and my ISP is Comcast.

Any help would be appreciative. Thanks!Could you please LET me know the Encryption technic used with WPA encryption mode. Is it TKIP or AES? Quote from: Vinu on May 31, 2011, 03:29:23 PM

Could you please let me know the Encryption technic used with WPA encryption mode. Is it TKIP or AES?

To be Exact it is a "WPA2/WPA Mixed Mode" as TKIP.Have you tried using IPCONFIG /release then ipconfig /renew under CMD prompt then rebooting the computer? Ok, try to manually add the network or creat new network profile and also check the Ip address on the vista computer. Do perform ipconfig release and renew process on the command prompt.

I have tried the ipconfig /release and renew but while it is on the Unidentified Network it doesn't have an IP address that will make it work.

I did try manually adding the Network and it doesn't work.

Although now my Wifi Adapter was connected to a USB EXTENSION cord and I took that out and plugged the Adapter directly to one of the Motherboard USBs and its working so far. So hopefully it was the cord or it might be the Adapter. Alright, it seems the issue was with the extension cord. I suggest you not to use the extension cord.

Have the wireless adapter connected directly to the USB port on the computer.

Looks like it's wasn't the cord as the problem came up again. I'm beginning to think it's the Wifi adapter since this is the only PC connected Wirelessly that is having the problem.Ok, try installing the wireless adapter on a different computer to isolate the issue.

Solve : print from dos?

Answer»

I am trying to help my cousin get his old DOS program to print thru his new setup. It was working with a network setup with two desktops, one running 98i and one on xp. He upgraded to a laptop with win7 and the printer is on a usb port.
 The laptop running xp with the dos program on it will print if the printer is directly connected to it, but will not print from the dos program. It will not print at all thru the network.
 I am not SURE exactly what to ask. I have tried the net use command with the printer connected to the win7 lappy with no result. I have not tried it with the printer connected to the one with the dos program.
 Idealy, I would LIKE to keep the printer connected to the win7 unit and be able to print from both and the dos program but it would be acceptable to connect it to the one with dos just when he needs to print something from that unit.
 I guess I need to go back and try the net use method with the printer connected to the xp machine.
 I know I just pretty much answered my question but I thought some BRAIN child might be able to guide me to a better solution.
 Thanks in advance for any assistance.Have you read this:
How to print to a network printer from an MS-DOS-based program in WINDOWS XP
Maybe it will help or give you some ideas.

Solve : Problems with network configurations.?

Answer»

Okay, here goes. Some  basic info: My wife and I have our COMPUTERS networked by Etherner cables through a Linksys WRT54G router. I am running Win XP Pro and my Wife is using Win 7 Home. I have a PCI network card and my wife has an onboard network adapter. Our printer is connected to my computer. We also shared an external HD, (NAS), but I will be replacing it with a new one. We also USE Networks Magic Essentials vs. 5.5.9195. We have had no problems until the past couple of months. The NAS software started indicating there was a network CONNECTION problem with my wife's computer. I also could not access her files on the NAS as I previously could.

These are the weird problems I am having with my wife's Win 7 computer. The Event Mgr gives an WARNING every time the computer in started up, "Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is disconnected from network". When I check the map of the network it shows her computer, a big ?, the router and internet. At the bottom of the page there is an icon for my computer with it's name stating that it cannot be placed in the map.  The Device Manager shows the card is working and the drivers have been updated.

We can access each others files through Windows Explorer and Network Magic which I could live with, but I want to connect the new NAS and I want to resolve the network problem.   She also has no problems printing on the printer connected to my computer. I am at the brink of wiping the drive and reloading Windows, but only as a last resort.  I have posted the results of the ipconfig below, which is mostly Greek to me. Thought it my shed some light. I am welcoming all help I can get.  I appreciate everyone here and thank you in advance.

Thanks.

Solve : Windows Xp but no internet??

Answer»

I'm sorta COMPUTER savvy and then I'm not so go easy on me.

I reinstalled xp on my old computer and I believe it has service pack 2 on it.

 I wanted internet on it so got an ethernet cable and plugged it into the router and then into the back of my pc for a wired connection.

The little computer icon popped up down there saying I was connected and when I go into network connections, I see one network there that SAYS 1394 Connection Connected, firewalled, 1394 net Adapter.

When I click on internet explorer, it simple just says " No connection to the internet is currently available" and asks if I want to work offline or try again.

So here is my question:

How do I MAKE the internet work on it?

BTW,  If this helps I go into device manager and under my network adapters, theres an Other devices expansion thing and when I expand it, a whole bunch of ? (yellow question marks) appear down there that say:

Ethernet controller
hpphotsmart 7150
PCI device
PCI simple communications Controller
SM bus controller
Video Controller (VGA compatible)

It says the drivers are not installed...so is that ethernet controller the PROBLEM to this or what.
I really need help from people that know about this stuff cause I'm at a lose.

ThanksFirst, do the other computers connected to the router connect to the internet OK?

The reference to 1394 is a firewire, not firewall, connection and it is not ethernet compatible.  Generally, it is used for cameras and such.  Personally, I've never seen firewire used for internet connectivity so I don't know why it is listed under network connection but it needs to be changed to ethernet.Your list of missing drivers indicates, that you need to INSTALL chipset driver first.After you installed the OS and like Broni stated the Chipset driver you will need to install the drivers for the hardware on the system (sound, video, NIC, ect...).

Solve : trust relationship with Domain server?

Answer»

First TIME ever having this problem with W7 Pro PC. We BELONG to a 2003 Server but 2 times already I have had trouble logging into the PC after the computers sat idle for an hour or more. It tells us the domain does not recognize the computer and the trust relationship was broken.

So on both of these PCs I logged into the local machine and changed the name of the PC, disconnected from the domain and then rejoined it. They seem fine now but I am hoping that my server isn't GOING bad.

Any comments on this? I have to admit that I have been teaching myself on W7 and haven't had any formal training. I am learning as I GO!

I did notice with W7 that when I assign a local user, that's what the name of the PC becomes? Does that sound right?

Solve : Making a Wired Printer Wireless?

Answer»

Hi, this is my first time on this site and I need some HELP. I am TRYING to make my wired printer wireless using the cheapest way possible. Right now my printer is using the a/b cable ( http://www.robotfuzz.com/files/imagecache/product_images/files/shop/usb-a-b-cable.jpg ). I want to keep that cable, but add a female to female usb adapter ( http://www.amazon.com/USB-Type-Female-Adapter/dp/B000GHXTA0/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top ). Then use a usb to ethernet adapter ( http://www.amazon.com/USB-Ethernet-Network-RJ45-Adapter/dp/B001M545DK ) and connect it to the other end of the female adapter. Then with the ethernet port, I would plug that into my netgear wireless g router ( http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/detail-page/B00008SCFL-lg.jpg ). Is this possible? Thank you!That will not work.  What you need is a "USB print server" - You plug the printer into one end using USB and an ethernet cable into the other and then into your router.I was afraid of that. Being a college kid, I don't have that MUCH money to spend. I'll try to find a cheap print server. Thanks!If this is just to print with only your computer, why do you need a wireless printer?

Besides a print server, as camerongray mentioned, ANOTHER option is to buy a wireless router with a USB port. For example: http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DIR-655-Extreme-Gigabit-Wireless/dp/B000LIFB7S/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1307211329&sr=1-1

Still another option would be to buy a wireless printer and/or a printer with an Ethernet port. Quote

Solve : router WPA2 security key?

Answer»

I have read several PLACES to make sure I record and save my router WPA2 security key. Why is this important? All I have to do is log on to my router and all of the security setings, including the WPA2 key, are right there. Thanks.Can you read the WPA2 key there?  Isn't it displayed as a string of asterisks or dots?  If the latter, then you really can't RETRIEVE it from there.

If you ever need to reset the WPA2 key in your router or computer, you'll have to get a new one if you don't know the old one.  But, that is no big deal so I don't see a great need to save it somewhere.  However, doing so might save some time if you need to reset the key in your router or computer.  Clearly, you'd need to reset the key in both your router and computer if either of them loses the WPA2 security setting and key for some reason.

Can you post a link to one or more of the references where you read about saving the key? Quote from: soybean on May 06, 2011, 08:02:14 PM

Yes, I can read the key in the wireless settings. Here is the Actiontec link. See Step 6. For some reason I can't copy the link. I'll keep trying . Ok. Here is a different link. See comments under WPA2 settings.

http://www.splashofstyle.com/archives/2010/12/03/how-to-change-verizon-fios-router-from-wep-to-wpa2-plus-other-security-adjustments/

It says you do not have to memorize key but you should write it down for future reference. I think most web articles explaining how to use Advanced Security Settings on the Actiontec are just lifted from the Actiontec website which says to write down and save you shared key.Well, if you feel better by making a note of it somewhere, then do so.  But, if you don't and you ever need to reset the WPA password, you'll simply need to create a new one and then also change in password in the WPA settings in your computer.

I am surprised to see that your router displays the password in readable FORM.  That seems to be a security issue, in my view. Quote from: soybean on May 07, 2011, 09:15:47 AM

I agree. I'm going to talk with Verizon and Actiontec about it. I'll let you know what they say.Here is what Actiontec said:

Incident Summary
=========================
No problem - just one question. When I log into my router, I can see/read my WPA2 shared key code. Shouldn't that shared key be unreadable?  If anyone GETS my router username & password, they can log into my router and also get my shared key code.  Why do you tell people to write down their shared key code and keep it in a safe place if all you have to do is log onto the router and get it? Thanks.
=========================

Resolution:
=========================
Cause nobody can access the router interface unless connecting directly to the router or by someone giving them the wireless password to access the wireless network. Then they would need the routers login info which would only be known by whoever configured it.
=========================
Nobody can access the router set up page without the login password created by you at the time of configuration. It is always recommended to secure the router set up page with the password. You can also change the security password to something which you can remember.

How can I send a large file from a server to someone's E-mail without downloding It?
You mean without you downloading it and then sending it, right?  Can you give that person direct access to the server where the file is stored?  That way, you could just send them the link or details needed to access it and then they could download it from the server.

If giving the intended recipient access is not feasible, then I see no other option than for you to download the file and then attach it to an email. Quote from: SOYBEAN on May 28, 2011, 09:58:54 AM

thanks, but I want to send the file "as a attach".
the file on that server is direct link, but it maybe deleted and when I send only the link of it my friend will not able to download it.
in other word, I want to Store the file on someone's Email box (to use its Unlimited free space ) Quote from: Oveis-HasanPoor on May 28, 2011, 10:29:40 AM

Then, you need to have the file on your hard drive in order to attach it, Period.    Quote from: Oveis-HasanPoor on May 28, 2011, 10:29:40 AM

Download it and host it yourself if copyright restrictions allow it. If not, don't break the law. Or ask how to on here.In fact, I am looking for a email sender service that allows attaching files from the Internet (URL). I searched many related keywords on GooGle.com, but I couldn't find the way to do it.
Is there any similar service on the WWW?
I uploaded the file on FileFactory.com using REMOTE UPLOAD service, but I am looking for a way to Upload them (the Files) to a E-mail Box.
Please help.

Unlimited free space
Where? It is not really unlimited. Somebody has to pay for it. Using 'free' space creates a problem for everybody. As mentioned earlier, you can keep the file on your computer and not be using the 'free' space that somebody else has bought.

If you want to buy some space, there are members here that will sell you space.
How much server space do you need? for how long? Would you like  a quote?

Here is what I will offer, I will clean out some of the trash in my e-mail accounts that I have and sell the space to you. My e-mail boxes are already full of stuff that other people put there with no regard as to how I have to pay for the space or clean it out. If I don't clean it out, they stop my serve until either I buy more space or clean out the trash.

Where did you ever get they idea there was unlimited free space? You have been watching to many Star Trek rerunms Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 28, 2011, 03:24:25 PM

It isn't realy 'Unlimited'  .
I am using Gmail and my mailbox has 7588 MB free space.
how can I remotely send a url file as an attach to the mailBox?
is there any similar service on internet?I guess you want to set up a Gmail account, then have files in its INBOX as attachments to messages and then give other people the username and password so that they can download the messages and therefore get the files. The size limit for a file is 25 MB. Some kinds of attachment are blocked - executables certainly, and zip files may be a problem so I'd use RAR. To get around the size limit, use WinRAR to make a split archive where each portion is smaller than 25 MB. You may as well use zero compression ("store") if it is a multimedia file (video etc) you are processing. You can also make PAR sets using something like Smartpar. This will help the recipients if parts are missing or corrupted. You could also check out an app called GMail Drive.

But... and this is the point we keep making, and which you keep not GETTING, there is no way to just supply a url and remotely fill a Gmail inbox with the (potentially huge) file it links to. Do you seriously think Google would let their servers be used in this way? Or the owners of the site where the file is hosted? You have to get the file on your local computer first and then upload it.

And, importantly, (read this carefully) trying to avoid these kinds of restrictions is something called "hacking", and we don't help with that here.

Salmon Trout, Let's hope he is listening.
There are places where you can rent storage space online and even some places that you can have free space.

Microsoft SkyDrive Offers 5 GB of Online Storage Space.

It is possible to use your own computer to transfer files to a friend or associated.
Here is a short review of two products.

Solve : Router disconnecting from the internet! Please help!?

Answer»

During the last 2 weeks I have had problems with my router disconnecting from the internet. That being SAID, my LAN- network is still working, but I loose the connection the internet. I am pretty sure the problem lies within the routher since I have several computers connected to the internet, and the same issue happens to all of them, I have also had a look at the network manager in my computer, and it also INDICATES on trouble:
 My computer ---------> Rotuer (works fine) ---------X--------> internet doesn't work.
The problem can appear just all of a sudden, it can happen anywhere from 1-20 times a day and is getting really frustrating. All my computers a connected via wireless, and I've tried connecting via cable but it didn't solve the problem. Usually when the router loses the connection, what I do is that I unplugg the router and MODEM, wait a bit and reconnect it. When it had started up again the connection is usually back, but for how long can differ, sometimes 2 min sometimes 2 hours.
All help is appriciated!

Zim0nTry bypassing the router, and just connect one computer via Ethernet cable to the modem, and see how long that connection lasts.  (This will mean your other computers will be offline, but it should tell you whether the problem is with the router, if the connection holds when connected directly to the modem.)As Aegis said, you need to prove that it is the router.

Some modems tend to overheat if placed in an area where there is poor circulation. try updating the firmware of your router. Might help against some problems... or,

Re-install drivers ,and give the router a factory reset ,start setting it up from scratch...Don't change the firmware of the router until you're sure that the router is the actual source of the problem.This thread is old. Either he fixed it or went somewhere else.

With the limited in FORMATION he gave, it was hard to even guess what the problem was.

 Maybe his modem was eaten by a snake. We'll never know.Agreed.  I threw that last post, just in case.

The "snake" theory is as good as any.    Quote from: Aegis on May 28, 2011, 08:24:55 PM

Solve : Direct URL Webpage Option Execution for Modem Reset?

Answer»

Looking into a way to pass a single URL (string) to my cable modem to basically have it reset by another program that monitors its connectivity. I have had issues where I can contact my modem, but the modem to ISP connection is lost requiring a reset. Comcast has made multiple visits and I have already replaced the modem. So since this happens a couple times a week and a reset is required to fix this, I figured I might be able to automate the reboot when my one system on the network detects that the internet is gone for 30 seconds, to then pass a direct URL reboot request via IEXPLORE.EXE "URL_and_True_To_RESET_INFO"

The URL that this HTML & Script is from is:  http://192.168.100.1/RgConfig.asp

And when selecting reset, and OK, it then tells the modem to reset and the URL changes to:
http://192.168.100.1/goform/RgConfig

So I am thinking that the information from Code: [Select]window.document.RgConfig.ResetReq.value = 1 should be able to be executed directly at the URL and have the modem reset, but http://192.168.100.1/goform/RgConfig.ResetReq.value = 1 doesnt work, so maybe a HTML or Script guru can help me make this work maybe?

Leads me to believe that this form function adds .ResetReq.value = 1 to the http://192.168.100.1/goform/RgConfig url path since it shows the form action of  =/goform/RgConfig

Code: [Select]function resetReq()

window.document.RgConfig.ResetReq.value = 1;

</html>DaveLembke, You code is way, way over my head.
I had Comcast and a reset was maybe once a week.
Is the connection by Ethernet cable?
Is the modem so far away you can not reset it by hand?
Modem is ethernet, and there are times that I am on the road on business and can not gain access into my own network without first having to call my wife and talk her through reboot. Would be nice to have a detection setup for internet down and have a computer thats already running be able to give it a reboot after 30 seconds of no internet. Detecting if the internet is down is easy, but trying to pass this reboot by passing direct form information through a URL chain is stumping me. I am thinking that even though the HTML & Scripts originated from the built in web server like service that the modem has, that feeding it what it wants even if not originated from the interaction of its own code, but a copy of its exact code with the form info that its ready to accept, it should act like pass thru acceptance and take the reboot.

The page uses a simple alert box which if selected OK, it passes the true statement in script for the information to be passed via a form to the modem. And I am thinking that this info can be tagged onto the URL at the END of the URL path to pass the reset to the modem.

The alert box and what the modem needs is right here, but I am just not sure how to pass it as URL + the true to reboot data that will make it reboot. Javascript and FORMS are my weak spot. And figured I would post this here instead of programming, since this is geared more towards HTML and Javascript web design even though it could be categorized as, hardware bending programming probably, to force feed it what it will readily accept without alert box and authentication required.

On the third screenshot you see the URL change to http://192.168.100.1/goform/RgConfig as the information is passed via form to the modem, but I am thinking this same info can be tagged onto the URL and passed that way as well. IF NOT... Then maybe an altered webpage that does away with the alert box, but passes it the true statement its ready to accept via form will also do the trick and be less complicated, at which point just launching the page will cause the reboot to happen once.
Code: [Select]function resetReq()
{
 var agree=window.confirm('Are you sure you want to reset the modem?');

 if (agree == true)
 {
window.document.RgConfig.ResetReq.value = 1;
 }
}

Re: Reset WRT54G router remotely
I was able to soft reset my Linksys WRT54G router firmware v1.009 remotely using a hidden reboot page as no reboot button was found on the admin page. Steps below:

1. Login into the web admin page of your router. I believe the default gateway is
192.168.1.1.
2. Go to the following page
http://192.168.1.1/Reset.htm
3. That should do it
 http://homecommunity.cisco.com/t5/Wireless-Routers/Reset-WRT54G-router-remotely/td-p/5352/page/2
But I still can't find the one I wanted, where you do the user name and password in the URL.
I am sure I saw that somewhere.
Does this help any?

EDIT: Crisco routers:
http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/networking/run-remote-commands-on-a-cisco-router-from-your-pc/422
Tried it with IP corrected for this device to 192.168.100.1 to see if it has a hidden page called Reset.htm, but comes up page not found. I am sure that Motorola and Linksys have their differences if there are any hidden pages.

*Update: It would probably be easier to create an altered webpage to launch than to pass it all in thru the URL. I have been able to reset the modem via an altered webpage that is outside of the modem on my computer locally by changing the form action path to full path of where to send the reset info to, but I still want to make this automatic vs having to click to submit:

Code: [Select]<form action=http://192.168.100.1/goform/RgConfig method=POST name="RgConfig">
From its original:

Code: [Select]<form action=/goform/RgConfig method=POST name="RgConfig">
I have been tweaking the webpage, but HIT a wall. The wall is that the form that passes the reset requires a user to do an event vs automatic execution of the form to be submitted. Dug out my O'Reilly Javascript book that I havent touched in 8 years that was burried under the stacks of other programming books that are used more frequently, and looking through all options for FORM Submission, I havent found a way to autosubmit on page load. I tried using onLoad in place of onClick, thinking that on pageload it would execute sending the reset info via form submission, but that doesnt work.

      onClick="resetReq();">

Also looked into others who want automatic form submissons and found this: http://www.velocityreviews.com/forums/t161954-convert-form-to-submit-on-load-instead-of-clicking-submit-button.html

*BUT... Trying to mix this code into this so called automatic form doesnt seem to be going too well. I tried to remove the IF statement, so that it would just do it no matter what the condition was, and that still requires clicking either button on the OK or Cancel alert box. Tried to remove the alert box and execute

Code: [Select]function resetReq()
{
window.document.RgConfig.ResetReq.value = 1;
}
Instead of:

Code: [Select]function resetReq()
{
 var agree=window.confirm('Are you sure you want to reset the modem?');

 if (agree == true)
 {
window.document.RgConfig.ResetReq.value = 1;
 }
}
And that also doesnt seem to automatically pass the form via auto-submit

Well I am going to take a break from this, since I have been hammering at this for 3 hrs and although made small progress, need a break from the code. I guess I will go fix my 2nd car that is starving for fuel.Have you ever used AutoHotkey or other keyboard emulators?
These can record macros that can be triggered by some later event.
Quote
AutoHotkey is a free, open-source utility for Windows. With it, you can:
    * Automate almost anything by sending keystrokes and mouse clicks. You can write a mouse or keyboard macro by hand or use the macro recorder.
    * Create hotkeys for keyboard, joystick, and mouse. Virtually any key, button, or combination can become a hotkey.
    * Expand abbreviations as you type them. For example, typing "btw" can automatically produce "by the way".
    * Create custom data-entry forms, user interfaces, and MENU bars. See GUI for details.
    * Remap keys and buttons on your keyboard, joystick, and mouse.
    * Respond to signals from hand-held remote controls via the WinLIRC client script.
    * Run existing AutoIt v2 scripts and enhance them with new capabilities.
    * Convert any script into an EXE file that can be run on computers that don't have AutoHotkey installed.
http://www.autohotkey.com/
Program like this can work inside of your browser.
It can, I believe, even start the browser.
Might be easier that JavaScript..

Thanks, I was able to make it work through Macro. Although would have been nicer to make it work as a single webpage that would send the form data on page load. I suppose the reason for why onLoad doesnt work for forms is because if it was OnLoad vs OnClick, it could be used for malicious intent...such as stealing info  through form that grabs and sends the minute the page loads without the user aware. I wonder if all forms are this way governed by browser rules handling forms or if the scripting language controls this.auto-submit web form using the body onLoad event. There is no onLoad event for an HTML form.

Code: [Select]<body onLoad="document.formName.submit()">
in your case I think that would be:

Code: [Select]<body onLoad="document.RgConfig.submit()">
Your cable modem shouldn't be going down a couple times a week.  Cable modems are much more reliable than that.  Since the modem has been replaced, it's probably not a problem with the modem, but a problem some where in the outside plant that Comcast needs to fix.  It sounds like an intermittent problem which can be very hard to find and fix.  Probably by the time the techs get to your home everything is working fine.

Here's another way that may serve the need to reset.
It would be nice... just a little or switch that could be held for a few seconds and force the modem to reset. If you have a wire connection going to the router and modem, there is a trick you can use.
In some IT installations they multiplex Ethernet cables to cut down on the cost of long cable runs. This applies to the 100 MB Ethernet, not the gigabit.  For the 100 Mb Ethernet there are a total of eight wires and the cable, but only four are actually used. But all of the wires have to be present for the proper electrical characteristics.
So you could guess what I'm getting at next. Here in my house we use  the Ethernet cable as an extension line out to another place. It's just an ordinary CAT-5, but it carries both Ethernet and a standard phone line. Nothing illegal about it, as far as I know. The voltages on the telephone line are usually quite low, except when the phone rings. Up to now nothing and has been blown up by the telephone company. The wires in question are cut out a little ways away from the connector and are tied into the phone system. Works for me.
It would be quite easy to put a little switch on one of those wire pairs and run it over to the power supply of the modem and just FLIP  the current on and off with the switch. I'm not sure how long cable could be before you have too much loss in the wire. Some modems require quite a bit of current, like 800 ma at 12 V, so there would be a little bit of a loss with two small wires of a CAT-5  cable. Or use a relay.

Just a thought.

Solve : Beater laptop and wireless internet.?

Answer»

I have an old laptop with XP on it that I want to get wireless internet for. The ROUTER its using now while free keeps dropping the connection and it is horribly slow, isn't there a no monthly FEE way of getting a fast, stable connection up.Since you mentioned old laptop, just reinstall your XP system and of course BACKUP first. Also check for any DRIVER updates for your network card. You wont get any free better connection other than subscribing to an ISP with HIGHER bandwith connection.

Solve : Wireless is not wireless?

Answer»

Hi,
 I just got ADSL and brought a wireless router... i plugged all the necessary cords in and set it up, the wireless now works on my other laptops without any cords attached and without any issues but the computer i used to set up the router will not connect to the internet without a cord attached to the router. I thought that it should be wireless also is this correct? Have i done something wrong?

Thanksone question.. is your desktop have a wireless network adapter?? if not you should add one....I have to ask, just to me clear and to make SURE it's not the issue...

Does your desktop computer have a wireless network adapter? Most don't, though they can easily be added.

-=EDIT=- Beat me by a few seconds there, seiji101  I connected it up through my brand new HP Laptop so im assuming it would?Sorry, I'm a bit confused with what you've done.

What is the computer you used to set it up? (make, model, specs)

How was it connected during the set up?I dont have access to the box right now, but i know its a newer model HP runs Windows 7, Has Intel core i5 500gb harddrive 4gb ram.

To set it up i plugged the adsl modem into the telephone  line an ethernet cord to the router and another from the router to the computer, then put the setup disc in for the router followed all the onscreen instructions and it started working for my other laptop. It connected straight to the network my comp asked me for passphrase and then i was connected wirelessly. But on the new comp i used to set up, when i remove the ethernet cord that i used to set the router up and then find the my wireless network when i press connect it wont connect it doesnt even ask me the passphrase.  Does this sound right? Should i get someone out to have a look?
I dont want to get someone and them say that the router does always have to be attached to the new comp so wireless works on other devices, a waste of time and money... I just assumed once the router was set up it would just need to be connected to the modem nothing else?Well, just let me clear up one thing for you: The wireless router shouldn't need to be connected to any computer for it to work PROPERLY. Both the network here at home and the one in my shop have a wireless router with nothing connected to them.

If you can get me the model number even, I can look up the specs online and see if the computer has wireless. I'm still not clear if the computer you used to set it up and now having the connection problem is a laptop or a desktop system. I assumed it was a desktop at first, but now I'm confused. That's not your fault, I have my mind on other things today.Its a laptop i'll get the model no. as soon as i can and thanks for letting me know that the router shouldnt have to be connected to anything, makes me feel a little less stupid Quote

HP runs Windows 7
1. What model is it?
2. If its a laptop, most has a button to press to enable WIFI connection.
3. Look on your wireless status(homegroup/sharing) for an automatically connect when wireless button or PC is TURNED on.
4. If you are not sure if its wifi capable, run this software and post the detail components of your PC http://www.piriform.com/speccy but the model number of the PC will suffice.The laptop is a hp pavilion g6 notebook pcOk. This time read again here and post again what comes up after...

Under the Home network connection/Manage wireless Networks status, make sure the wireless router is set first(if there are other wireless connection shown or visible) or the only one showing and that there is an automatically connect under active network and a security status(WPA2-personal) for your PARTICULAR home network. Since you mentioned a passphrase or a password,  if it is set to automatically connect and the password was already made under security settings for your notebook it should only detect the router and verify for you to use the wireless network without the need for a password and still be secured.

Solve : Would I be better off starting a new network from scratch??

Answer»

Hello,

We have 2 desktop computers connected through the router by Ethernet and a laptop connected Wi-Fi. We had a shared network external hard drive for backing up files. Whenever I logged in to the HD web site to access her files the connection always would show an exclamation mark beside a statement saying that there were network connection problems with her desktop. As a result I could not access her files through the web site. I am running Windows XP Pro on my desktop and my wife is running Windows 7 Home Edition  64 bit on her desktop and also on the laptop. Until the past month or so, we used the external HD for several months with no problems, (with network connections on any of the computers). We also use Network Magic which helps me because I know little about networking. I have since disconnected the HD and will be installing a new one, but I want to take care of this problem first.

I can still access her documents, pictures, etc from my computer through Network Magic or Windows Explorer and she can do likewise and also has internet access.  Due to the message and access problems to the external HD I checked the Event Log and every time the computer is rebooted the same three errors below are shown. I checked the Device Manager and it shows that the network CONTROLLER is working and no conflicts. I have also updated the driver, but no changes. I don't know if the 3 errors are related, but they seem to be the same problems, all together each time the computer is started. What would be the easiest way to delete our current network connections and START from scratch in setting up a network.

I'm not sure what all information I need to provide, but I would sure appreciate it if anyone can HELP me out. I have googled the event IDs and the mrtRate.Sys with no results, that I can understand anyway. I have no clue what the mrtRate service is or what program uses it.

These are the 3 errors always showing:

Warning!
RTL8167, Event ID 1
Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is disconnected from network.

Error!
Service Control Manager, Event ID 7000
The mrtRate service FAILED to start due to the following error:

\SystemRoot\SysWow64\Drivers\mrtRate.SYS has been blocked from loading due to incompatibility with this system. Please contact your software vendor for a compatible version of the driver.

This may be the source of the problem. See if you can resolve this issue.

Are you using Avast? If so, it is the cause of the problem.
Please respond. There are other members here who will catch your reply and came back with more details.Thanks for responding. Yes we are using Avast on all three computers. I have always been happy with Avast, but I will change if necessary. Any issues with others like AVG, etc ?

It is documented on the Avast web site and they are doing or have a fix for the issue.
The key expression is:
\SystemRoot\SysWow64\Drivers\mrtRate.SYS has been blocked from loading
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=40345.0
Please read it and tell me what it says. I have a hard time reading it.

You should not have to remove Avast. It is a false AV hit.

I went to the Avast link which discusses the mrtrate.sys problem. It was dated in 2008 but the first post mentions the cause related to an older version of Quicken. My wife's computer had an older version on it so I uninstalled it and installed an updated version. This took care of both mrtrate probelms I listed.

There is still an issue with the network controller as I still receive the following error:
Warning!
RTL8167, Event ID 1
Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is disconnected from network.

I don't understand this because the devise manager says it's working and I can access files on my computer from hers and likewise in accessing her files from mine. She shares the printer connected to my computer and has no printing problems. If it weren't for the problems I had before with the external HD I would probably give up, but I would like to resolve it before I install my new external HD.

I really appreciate the help in correcting the mrtrate error problems. If anyone can help me with this issue I will be a happy man. Even if I have to start a new network I would appreciate some guidance in getting rid of the one I have.

Thanks again.

Solve : High ping fluctuations causing lag spikes. Please Help!?

Answer»

Hi Everyone

A few weeks ago I began to experience lag spikes on my laptop when using the internet. After pinging my default gateway or whatever it's called I discovered that I had matching high pings and timed out requests. I've done a clean install of my OS, upgrading wireless drivers and some other stuff to no avail. I don't get any timed out requests anymore, but I still get high pings every one MINUTE or so causing lags when I'm using the internet or playing. I'm the only one in my HOUSE experiencing the problem, and when using a wired connection everything works fine, so it is probably my computer that is something wrong with. As I have searched around quite a bit, I came across a similar forum, and the person was ASKED to type tracert dslreports.com in cmd, so I've done the same just in case. I have no idea what information i should post so bear with me. Any help would be very much appreciated.

C:\Users\Fon-Fon>It's TINET.NET, NOTHING is wrong with your computer.Thank you for your reply and what a relief. Should I call my internet provider about my problems then?BumpWhat browser are you using?  Have you tried clearing your browser history?

I'd try that and then, if that does not help, call your ISP.I'm using firefox, and no, cleaning history, cookies and such did not help.
Another thing I noticed is that when i tried out different settings on my router like changing from dynamic IP to PPPoE, my computer would loose the connection, while my brother's still worked fine. Even when changing the settings from his laptop the only computer to loose the connection would be mine. I then had to unplug and replug my router to regain my internet.Update: Just tried to use a wired connection again, and now I get the same results as when I'm using wireless. Also the timed out request has returned. So basically I get high pings and timed out requests when using wireless as well as wired at home, and only at home.Cable modem or DSL modem?It appears to work fine, so it must be my router then. Just weird that it only has a problem with my computer, even though I've reinstalled  both router and computer countless times.Doing the tracert thing i get pretty much the same results, only a little better overall though, but I guess that doesn't matter.
I'm going to try and install a windows 7 and reinstall my router to see if I get the same problem.

Solve : Poor quality, overcomplex network?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a connection that has been causing much frustration amount the wireless users in the family. We have 3 devices+1 ipod touch that use this wireless network.(sometimes one is off) 2 computers are desktop and use a wired connection and work perfectly.

The problem is that the wireless network is HORRIBLE. Sometimes one wireless device loses connection and when the network is unplugged and replugged the device sometimes gets its connection back, but USUALLY another device loses its connection. The quality changes throughout the day.

When all devices are working there is constant LAGS in connection and this is especially frustrating for the gaming users in the network.

I asked this question before, but the person asked for more info about where all the connections go and I didn't REALLY know how to answer this. Now I managed to get a complete set up of our wireless network(which is probably more complicated and bloated than it should)

We have 4 network devices(I'm not totally sure if they are routers or modems so I'll give their names)

1. Linksys WAD54G

2. Netgear Wireless Print Server(not sure if this is needed)

3. We have a black network device and it has no name on it.(Has the most plugs so I guess its a modem? It's the newest piece of equipment, but it didn't really help the INTERNET connection.)

4. A VOIP phone(I think this is the problem. Also if you disconnect it the internet goes down)

Here's the complete set up.
1. Linksys
-connection to the VOIP phone with a blue wire
-black wire for power

2. Netgear Wireless print server
-Black wire to modem
-wire for power

3. Unknown black modem
-white cord to wall socket
-gray cord to VOIP phone
-Dark blue cord to one desktop comp. Wired connection
-one cord to another desktop. Wired.
-another cord to the Netgear Wireless print server
-one cord for power

4. VOIP Phone
-one wire to the black modem
-one blue wire to linksys if you are running DSL. if ONE of you are watching a you tube video, and another one of you are trying to play WoW. you are going to lag like crazy. On top of that if you have voip included in all of this to tie up even more bandwidth... it would make sense that it is slow regardless if you would ask me.
  But besides all that, you might want to think about getting a new router. how old is the one that you have? I have been googling that model number and I can't find any info on it at all..
   I'd check your WiFi channel.

Use something like InSsider to figure out which channels are the clearest and then use one of them.

Is it possible for you to draw a simple map with the layout of all of these devices and upload it here?

Solve : Advice on what to look for in a broadband router?

Answer»

I'm looking for a 4 port broadband router. I'm not sure what features to look for though. My husband and I have our computer, TWO 360s and a ps3 that we want to have connected all the time. We might only use two devices at once, during RARE occasions maybe 3, but I'm not sure if there is some kind of bandwidth CAP where it will only let any devices connected go as fast as the router will ALLOW. I don't know if that makes sense, i just remember seeing a lot of routers that said something about a 10mbps speed. We are paying for turbo service with our provider and we'd like to take advantage of that speed on everything connected, sometimes it goes up to 35mbps. It doesn't need to be wireless, we'd actually prefer something wired. So what kind of specs should I be looking for to find a router that will work the way I need it to?

So far I was looking at this one, http://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-4-Port-Broadband-Router-TW100-S4W1CA/dp/B00006I5XC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1303235216&sr=8-1

and this one http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-EBR-2310-Ethernet-Broadband-Router/dp/tech-data/B000GVTX6U/ref=de_a_smtd

I guess another thing I should add is that we use the connection mostly for gaming, so it is important that it is a constant connection.

Thanks a lot, any advice is welcome.The original Ethernet speed was 10Mbs but fast Ethernet (100Mbs) came out in 1995, and almost all routers support that speed, or even faster with Gigabit Ethernet.  Either of the routers you are looking at should be fine, but I would also look at Linksys.  I would go for brand name over price, but that's just me.

Your limiting speed will be the speed of your ISP.  You have got a GOOD speed from your ISP, but most new routers will be much faster than your ISP.Okay cool, thanks

Solve : Home network / Homegroups?

Answer»

Hi, all.  I WOULD like some help with setting up a home network.  Here are the specs on what I have.

1 X tower system running Win 7 Ultimate (quad-core/6GB ram)
1 X LAPTOP running Win 7 Home (quad-core/8GB ram)
1 X Laptop running Win XP Pro (Core 2 Duo/4GB ram)

I want to take my tower system and make it a server/data storage system.  Then, I can have either laptop access the entire 2TB in the tower system.  The internet will run (hardwire) into the tower and wireless N to both laptops.

I also plan to ADD an IPAD 2 and Samsung Galaxy to the fold soon.

Will Win 7 homegroups do this efficiently for me or should I look at other options?  Will setting the tower up with homegroups leave me open to unauthorized access outside of my homegroup?

I am PRETTY well versed with individual computers (hardware/software) but relatively new to networking.

Thanks
Refer here about homegroups or sharing --> http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/homegroupThanks for the link.  That will help but does anyone know the answers to the questions...

Will Win 7 homegroups do this efficiently for me or should I look at other options?

Will setting the tower up with homegroups leave me open to unauthorized access outside of my homegroup?

Thanks.

Solve : system does not prompt for a key to connect to wireless network?

Answer»

Hi everybody!
My NEIGHBOR recently bought a WiFi router. He encrypted it and told me the password. I try to connect to the access point from my desktop PC (using a WIRELESS card adapter). As far as I know, when connecting to a secured network Windows XP prompts for a key, but in my case nothing happens. I have Windows XP SP3. Would be grateful for any advices.   Ask your neighbor again... If you were able to connect instantly then its not secured.Hello,

Technically what you are doing is illiegal.  The broadband service is provided from the ISP to the person(s) at that address.

Throwing caution to the wind, are you sure you have the correct encryption key, they are usually case sensitive.  First off, can you scan the surrounding area for any wireless routers broadcasting.  Generally most people have them set to broadcast SSID as this MAKES it easier to people to connect to.

Windows XP should identify the router and note a padlock symbol NEXT to it showing it is secure/encrypted.  If no symbol then no encryption.

If your network connection settings shows you are connected see if you have an IP address.Thanks. I'll try that and

Solve : Unable to access configuration of second router.?

Answer»

Hello all, as you'll see from my post count/history, I'm one of those people who only comes here in the most dire of circumstances. My latest problem is described below. I've never been fond of networking, with its foibles and complexities. I get the feeling that this is a topic that has sprung up before on these forums, found a couple of similar threads but wasn't satisfied with the conclusions (they didn't work).

My setup is as follows; I have a primary router (an old Belkin F5D7230-4, bless it, still going strong) acting as gateway in my living room and connected to my ADSL, with an ethernet lead trailing upstairs connected to a Linksys WAG354g, which then serves as a wired access point upstairs.
I can access the Belkin just fine, from the PC I'm using now which is connected to the Linksys, using the standard 192.168.2.1; however the Linksys configuration page proves inaccessible from any browser using any number of IP addresses I've googled (192.168.1.1 seems to be the most widely known).

I have attempted to remedy this by Googling for the past hour or so, hitting up on the usual solutions such as ipconfig (which reports the Belkin directly) and netstat -n, which GAVE such a bewildering list of numbers I almost immediately gave up; I did though unplug the Belkin from the back of the Linksys and run netstat -n again, and the only number to remain was LOCALHOST (There's no place like 127.0.0.1).

I'm only trying to access the Linksys to turn off the wireless, which some [CENSORED] has been using with a Blackberry, it seems (I've now filtered the MAC from accessing my line, but I'd still like to disable the wireless to avoid this problem in the future). Right now it's seeming like it will be easier to open up the box and just rip the *censored* wireless card out.

One question, now I think about it; with my Belkin reporting the Blackberry in its DHCP client list, does this mean it is simply reporting a connection that has been made through the unprotected Linksys, or has this Blackberry *censored* been using my (passworded) Belkin directly?
Oh, also, the Linksys rather annoyingly does not appear on the Belkin's DHCP clients. Had it simply DONE so, this would be much easier for me.Here's some general information about using two routers in a home network. Yes, you would like to have a very specific answer, but there R. some things you have to consider before trying a specific solution.
In-home networking the common practice is to have all devices in what is called the same subnet. Here is a general example:
192.168.1.1
192.168.1.5
192.168.1.12
192.168.1.13
192.168.1.254
all these addresses lie in the range of 0 to 255 of that last oclet, and are within the range of addresses that could be used on a typical home network system. Some commercial enterprise networks may have a larger base range to allow more devices on a local network. Keep in mind,  these are local IP addresses, not IP addresses that would on the Internet.
To access any device on the local network that can possibly be accessed through your browser, the device must have a unique IP address. Unfortunately, some routers use default address that is not in the same block of addresses that has been assigned by the DHCP authority of the local network. To make it more complicated, many routers like to use the same address, even routers made by different companies like us to use the same address. By default, each router thinks it's the boss, metaphorically speaking of course.
The way most people resolve this issue is by studying the documentation that comes with the router. Or else you can do this* right below.
Disconnect the router from the network, disconnect your desktop PC from the network, and the cable, I mean ethernet cable, from your computer to the router. Do not use the WAN. Use one of the LA N. reset your computer, reset the router. Look on the bottom of the router that should be some information about the USER name or the administrator name and password to visit off abuse information about the default IP address. Now using a toothpick or a paperclip gently press on the button is found just inside the little hole that is labeled reset. It may take about 20 seconds and then you'll see the lights on the router all turn on and hold then release the reset button. At this point you should be able to bring up your browser and put in the IP address. If your browser is giving you some trouble you'll need to set the start-up p page to a blank page. Any attempt of the browser to try and get to a website will just foul things up at this point. If necessary, restart the browser and try again. Also, you may want to do a quick reset of the router. A a quick reset means just taking off the power for a few seconds and turning it back on. This is not the same thing as using the hidden reset button. Also,  you may have to force your browser to clear history and things like that eventually you'll get the browser to address the router at the default address. And when you get to that point you will be asked for the user name and password. On some systems it is simply ADMIN in lower case and PASSWORD in lower case. (U upper case is here to get attention.)
But to get into the router you can make whatever settings you need. This is going to be the second or third router in the system, you'll have to GIVE it some address other than the vault address used by the main router. Here's one possibility that I like:
192.168.1.20
In any case, they can address that works in your system. And remember, once you click the button that says okay or apply, you will lose the connection to the router because you're on the wrong address now. Enter the new address in the address are the browser and you should be able to get to the device at the new address. Once you get this far, you can disconnect things and put the router or you want to work . From now on you'll be able to access the router using that address. I don't know of any shortcuts to do this easier. Once it's done, you shouldn't have to do it again for a long time.

*Typical, but there are other methods. An alternate is to use a commercial program to set you you local network for you. Details on request.

Thanks for your reply. I followed your suggestion and was able to access the Linksys, disable the wireless, and brand it with a new IP. However I am still unable to access it while it is plugged into the Belkin.

Regardless, I'm going to mark this solved, as I achieved what I set out to do (disable the wireless) and if I ever have to access the Linksys again, I know what steps to take.

Thanks again :)

Solve : What is DD-WRT? What can it do.?

Answer»

DD-WRT MAY help you solve a wireless connectivity issue.
Here is some information you may want to investigate.
Quote

DD-WRT is a Linux-based firmware for several wireless routers, most notably the Linksys...
DD-WRT INCLUDES such features as support for the Kai network, daemon-based services, IPv6, Wireless Distribution System, RADIUS, advanced quality of service, radio output power control...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DD-WRT
This does NOT mean you have to use Linux.
Instead, this may be what  you need if you have trouble with 64 bit systems that do not support the wireless adapters you have. A DD-WRT device can be a wireless router to connect through Ethernet and serve as a wireless network bridge. Wireless without wireless hardware drivers. (Of course, you already have Ethernet drivers. That is seldom a problem with 64 bit OS.)

Here is a LIST of routers that can do DD-WRT. MANY are vainly cheap on the used market. Maybe you have one in your hope chest.
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices
Is this information helpful?
DD-WRT is a firmware replacement for some models of router.

I don't see how it's supposed to magically make wireless adapters without 64-bit drivers work. Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 16, 2011, 09:17:38 AM

Think about it.

OK. let's reason it out here.

A network adapter is a device used to access an external network connection. Relevant in this case, wireless adapters. A wireless adapter in many cases will connect to an access point (a router). Note however that no connection can be made in the first place without drivers.

Therefore, that MEANS that changing the firmware on the router isn't going to do a  thing to make wireless adapters work without drivers. The very idea is absurd (not DD-WRT).

An analogy:

Hey, I got this new car firmware you can install in your car, and it makes all passing red cars blue instead! Same Idea.

Solve : How to connect to internet from wireless to wired?

Answer»

I have three computers, A , B and C. A connect with cable to the router, B and C by using wireless adapters. Now I want B computer change to using wire/cable.My PROVIDER is AOL,OS is window XP. I called AOL few days ago, they couldnt help! They just asked me type 192.168.0.1 on Run or on the search bar, it either couldnt find or couldnt open.I had tried to reboot the router and I was also used a new RJ 45 but both wont work!Can you help? Put it this way, can you tell me how to connect to internet from wireless to wired  for the computer because it is working by using wireless adapter! Thanks.Did you ever use wired connections on those laptop before or did it work before?
Check first under device manager for your LAN card if its with flag/mark. Have you check if you have run the network wizard to create a LAN connection? wow I feel for you I really do.  AOL are pants, but anyway thats another story.

You didn't stay but I guess your Router has more than 1 network point to plug network cables into.  i.e. more ports similar to what computer A is plugged into.  The 2nd port on the router connect to computer B.

OK GOTO Start -->  control panel --> network connections --> and locate your "LOCAL area network"  right click this icon.  is there an option to Enable??  if so select it.  If there is no "Enable" then it already is.

click START --> run --> type "cmd"  in the black windows type "ipconfig"  you should get a response providing you with an IP address usually 192.168.0.2.  Your default gateway or the Router will probably have an IP address of 192.168.0.1.  as per the AOL helpdesk.

OK now type "PING 192.168.0.1" if you get a reply this is good news.  now try and "ping www.google.com"  if you get a response you are on-line and have internet capability.

launch your prefered browser and surf to your heart contents.

If you have problems at this point go to (in IE) Tools --> Internet options --> connections --> LAN settings --> select "AUTOMATICALLY detect settings" make sure all other options on that window are unchecked.

good luck

Solve : My own hotspot??

Answer»

I currently have a tower, laptop, and Ipod touch. I want to network them all together but currently connect to the internet using a 3G DONGLE (phone modem?). This is connected to either the tower or the laptop via USB but not both at the same time. I assume the IPOD Touch will have to be connected via WIFI. The laptop and tower have both LAN and WIFI ability.
I assume I need to somehow make an internet access point do haven't a clue!!
By the way using XP pro SP3
You need a wireless routerThanks reddevigg. Got 1 of those - so how do i set up the network please
You also need an ISPso there is no way to use my ipod touch to connect to the internet even with a laptop and phone modem connected to the internet ??How do you connect to the internet?  Cable or DSL modem?  How is your router connected?either with laptop or desktop using a dongle from a mobile phone COMPANY called 3 in the uk. the dongle has a built in phone NUMBER so I assume it acts as a mobile telephone modem
Either get a phone line and an ISP OR get a dongle for each appliance (which i guess will be expensive)When you get a (made by) Huawei 3G dongle from the UK mobile phone company "3" you get (1) a 3g (cellphone network) modem (the "dongle") (2) an ISP service with them which you access via the dongle. This is standard with 3G services from mobile phone COMPANIES. You can plug the dongle into a router and share the connection the same way you would share a connection through a DSL modem or a fibre cable modem or whatever. 3 (The company) actually supply a router, the Huawei D100, designed to be used with the mobile modem. 19BigAl49, I think you should just you should call 3 and get them to talk you through what you need to do.

Solve : NYU Wireless Issues (WPA2 Enterprise)?

On my phone NYU wifi gives me no issues. On my laptop on OS X and other buildings, I never have problems either. It's just when I am on Windows 7 and in my dorm.... then I'll disconnect after 30 minutes or an hour... I can't log in for 5 minutes later. Very annoying. I've DONE this exactly the way it was back in September and I've deleted the network and re-created it just the way NYU describes on their website and I still get the issue. Any thoughts?
Laptop is a 15" MacBook Pro with Bootcamp.

It sounds as though your internet browser is firewalled, or something of the like.

Solve : No Internet, even though it says I'm connected?

Answer»

My internet has been running through a direct LAN line ran to a router.  It has worked fine for several months until just a few weeks ago.  We had a power outage and ever since then I am not receiving packets and the internet does not work.  It says it is connected with a speed of 100.0 Mbps.  I have tried disabling then re-enabling and repairing with no results.  Windows says that it does not detect any problems with the connection.  I have also tried resetting the router, as well as unplugging the LAN cable from my computer and the router and then plugging them back in.  No results.  I don't understand why it suddenly is not working, even though it says it is.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  THANKS!

Hope this helps some..

LarryI'm thinking (and that could be trouble, smile) that your router should be connected to the modem, if that is the case, the router could be working fine but unable to connect to the internet because the modem isn't working properly.. could that be your problem?? Quote from: Computer_Commando on March 26, 2011, 05:09:15 PM
10.0.x.y is not a router LAN address.  Should be 192.168.x.y

With that subnet mask it doesn't make any difference.The IP Address is provided by your Service provider and Router address for each company is similar but deffinitely not same. for example -
Cisco router has default IP for its routers 192.168.1.1
2Wire has default IP for its routers 192.168.0.1

More in detail:
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.101 -  this would be your ip address
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : fe80::6a7f:74ff:feaf:f886%14 This is your mac address of your router as IPV6
                                             or 192.168.1.1 simple ip

Make sure your default gateway is your routers address; in another word an RJ11 cable that comes from phone line goes in to your modem and from modem RJ45 cable goes into router which connects to your PC or laptop. Once you confirm the setting as discribed above, check all of the following one by one

Keep handy all your routing info handy, means ip addresses, login name password for router, your service provider etc. Be prepared for resetting your modem by force shutdown.in order to Reset modem push paper clip into back of you modem (it has very small about 1mm size of WHOLE which allow an opened paper clip to go in and then hold for 10 second, this will reset your modem.

now if you dont know your modem settig then call service provider howerver service provider wont support router unless you have purchase it form them only...

you MUST know your router page login and password, by default it should be admin, admin unless you have defned other wise. get in to setting and see if the settings are correct, if you need you can send me all 6 pages of router home page... resetting is the fastest but tedious way to resolve this issue. every time you connect a device check it by pinging it. if you do not rcv ping means you have broken connection. Also make sure you do not have an apipawell, i figured it out.  i tried plugging it straight into the modem, and now it works flawlessly.  i guess the switch went bad on the router.  thanks for all the advice, anyway!  take care

Solve : What's the correct Network Configuration??

Answer»

Hi,

I am here to pose a question for all.

I have a NetGear DG834GT router, which is configured as a DHCP server with the usual default ADDRESS (192.168.0.1 with MASK of 255.255.255.0).
Connected to this is a NetGear WNR2000v1, which when I connect to the DG834GT shows as having my PC connected and the other Netgear router. This router however is given a 192.168.0.3 address.
Now, if I connect to the WNR2000v1 router, it shows as having a different IP. It shows as having the address of 192.168.1.1.

As you can imagine, I am now confused. Which address has it really got?, and how do I best configure the home network?

We have this layout as we have 5 students that stay with us and they each have a wireless laptop or iPhone, hence GETTING 2 wireless routers to pick up the connections.

Does anyone have any good ways for me to configure this correctly, or are the two routers correctly configured now?

Kind RegardsWorks best if each router has different Class C addresses
Router #1:  192.168.1.1
Router #2:  192.168.0.1

I think this is what you currently have.

Solve : Home Connection?

Answer»

We have 3 computers in our home, it is all wireless. The internet was messed up and when we turned it back on it is only allowing one computer to connect. The NETWORK SHOWS that it is found on the other 2 computers but it just will not connect. We have even typed in the correct security codes and PIN number. What is going on? and How can i get internet to all 3 computers at once?have you reset the router?yes 3 or 4 timesCould be a hardware error in the router.  Did you try connecting each computer one by one? How old is your router? Quote from: Kelsey2011 on March 31, 2011, 02:02:30 PM

The network shows that it is found on the other 2 computers but it just will not connect.
Can you explain what that MEANS please? Can you ping on these computers?What do you mean by connecting all 3 computers? Connect them by a wire to the router and we've only had it for 4 year and when the computer says searching for network device mine shows up but it says unable to connectLet's start at the beginning because this is a little CONFUSING. Are we talking about a home network where you can't see the other computers or are we talking about the computers being unable to connect to the internet?

And don't worry about the post by Firefox264How exactly did you reset the router?  If you unplugged the power cable, how long did you leave it off?  Some routers need for power to be off longer than others to reset.

Solve : the target systen requests username and password for sharing?

Answer»

hello
i have a home NETWORK with a PC and a laptop. both of them are using windows XP SP3 PRO. they ping each other easily. the laptop can reach internet trough the PC. there are some shared folder on them. i have turned off firewalls. i can access shared folder on laptop trough PC BUT when i want to access shared folders on PC by the laptop ,the PC request username and password for accessing.
i have not set any password on PC and the laptop
there are shared folders on PC.

what do you think how to fix itThis is an old problem.
Create a new user account on both computers, using the same user name. No password.
Reboot and log into that user on both machines.
Do the Network wizard over again on both machines.
Reboot both machines.
Make sure the 'shared documents flooder' on both machines is shared. It should allow users to modify contents.
Reboot both machines.
In about 60 seconds the two machines should discover each other. If not, search for the other machine. That will help sometimes.
Once you get it to work, it should not be necessary to log into the common user name each time.
Let me know if it does not work.Double check to see that SHARING is allowed on the illusive 'target' machine.

Solve : UBUNTU / WINDOWS NETWORK??

Answer»

I am not sure this is the right forum.
My roommate is running dual boot Windows XP PRO (SP3) and Ubuntu 10.10.  I am running Windows XP PRO. Is there any software that can run on both OS and can create a home network that will work between XP and Ubuntu? He has Samba installed but I have read that that works on Linux not Windows so he can see me but I can’t see him.

OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 3, 32 bit
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+, x86 Family 15 Model 12 Stepping 0
Processor Count: 1
RAM: 1023 Mb
Graphics Card: RADEON 9600 SERIES , 128 Mb
Hard DRIVES: C: Total - 476937 MB, Free - 322551 MB; F: Total - 59835 MB, Free - 22149 MB; H: Total - 179487 MB, Free - 29749 MB;
Motherboard: MSI, MS-6702, 1.0, 00000000
Antivirus: avast! Antivirus, Updated: Yes, On-Demand Scanner: Enabled
I am running WinXP and Ubuntu dual boot on a laptop.
My wife has Vista on a laptop and the desktop is running Win2000Pro.

We have no problem using a workgroup and sharing files. Just used the wizard standard to Windows and the Linux did it automatically.

You should have no problem.

P.S., When I installed Ubuntu, I let it do what it wanted to do, no custom install...just accept all the defaults!

Solve : DLNA Media Server/Share?

Answer»

Hello,

I have a couple of Samsung network-able TVs in the office here, and am working setting them up with DLNA. My GOAL is to be able to view video, photos, etc over the network.

So far, this has been very easy using EITHER Windows Media Player or Samsung's own PC Share Manager.  The problem is that with both of these programs, you have to manually 'update' the library in the utility before FILES BECOME available via the TV.

What I would like to do is set it up so that users can drop files into a network share, and those files become instantly (or nearly so) available via the TV. Right now, they could drop the files into the default directory for these programs (like \\server\mediashare\), but then a user (unfortunately me) must choose to 'add files to library' or 'Refresh Database'. I want to find a solution that cuts out this step.

Thanks!

Solve : Unknown wireless network?

Answer»

I have an unknown wireless network signal in my DELL Vostro laptop and only once time i was access internet with this network.
But now i can't connect with this network and i cant access internet.
What is this

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Are you having LAN or wireless connection issues? If the signal being detected or received is from outside sources and not your own connection then you must acquire and setup your own router/modem for any internet activities. Then proceed here -->  http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/27067/change-wireless-network-priority-to-make-windows-7-choose-the-right-network-first/It will show you any Wi-Fi that is in range.

Just because they show on your list does nt MEAN you can connect to them may require password.It appears to be a wireless network that was used somewhere [hotel; coffee shop; etc.] that has been selected as the default wirless goto.
Go to network console and delete it, then search for wirless in area [your own network] and logon.
Windows will remeber this network and goto each time until you select another one. [or VISIT Starbucks again]The wireless network is a VPN (virtual private network). Did you ever use this for work? Usually this type of networks are use to connect to a server to allow access to your work.   What operating system do you have
Here is a RECYCLER.EXE name virus in my laptop and pen drive.
Its not removed by formating and antivirus scaning.

Solve : how do I kill the process which use specific ip and port in xp.?

Answer»

in my computer, some ports are open but i don't know which processes opened it.

I want to kill them, the only things i know is  ip and port.

how can i kill them ?? in window xp.

please help me.

i already know "taskkill" in dos  kills process.

how do i USE it. ??Open msconfig and choose selective startup (disable everything from loading) and REBOOT. Does the problem still occur? If not, START adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. However, if the problem continues even with the first selective startup it's possible we're looking at a hardware related issue.http://www.speedguide.net/faq_in_q.php?qid=115TCPViewA easy way you can do this is by using this tool from Nirsoft http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/cports.html

Go to bottom of the PAGE to find the download link

This tool will show you all open ports with their IP address and also lets you find which process opened it.
