Solve : Multiplayer Games..?

Answer»

I plugged in my speedstream thing, was expecting to play Warcraft, but found that I couldn't connect. I tried other multiplayer games, none work!  :-?

I'm connected to "Local Area Connection.."
I can browse the internet, no problemo.
I have absolutely no idea what to do.
I don't know what details to post, so tell me if you need to know.

Thanks.Check the Warcraft site for info on PORT forwarding and playing online...Is your Speed Stream 4100 modem configured correctly??? Is it not letting you play because your connection times out, if so check your ethernet connection to make sure it is fastened COMPLETELY, and make sure you have no defects in your crossover cable. Hope maybe this helps :-/. Other than that I can't think of anything else.Configured correctly.. err..   See patio's post.  This is almost certainly a firewall/NAT issue. Quote

Configured correctly.. err..

That pinpoints the problem.
same thing for me i cant play multiplayer games adn my firewall is off I might have this same problem. When choosing to host a server for multiplayer games or serving software like VNC, it CHOOSES to allow connections on LAN instead of over the internet, I have no idea how to fix this.

Occurs even after port is forwarded and firewall exceptions are made.if you are TALKING about Warcraft 3, there is a service called www.gameranger.com that I have used to play with my friends that made things very stable... but are you talking about getting on www.battle.net to play? just any like urberstrike.com and powersoccer.com Quote from: osmo on March 28, 2011, 11:10:59 AM

I'm talking about programs that host over the internet in general. I have the ports forwarded properly, yet it refuses to detect the internet IP, only the LAN. Gameranger is useful only for certain games, and the games I have problems with include Valve games which have dedicated server software.

Solve : mobile broadband..virgin mobile mifi or verizon 5 spot??

Answer»

I am considering a mobile broadband device & service.  I live in a far northern suburb of chicago...I've heard some not so great stuff about virgin mobile but also heard the service is good but slow in my area..verizon i believe would be more reputable & they have a good deal on the 5 spot;  free device W/$35 PER month 3Gb max on data but there is the 2 year contract...I would need a wireless adapter for my pc.  I was just wondering if anyone has experience with either service & device especially in my area...I had avirgin mobile pay as you GO phone 7 years ago and had no problems & I really enjoyed it...do you think that is any evidence of potential good luck with its broadband? my neighbor has the sprint mobile broadband with no issues..I've heard virgin's is only 1/2 the speed tho..please help!

Solve : Need Help Decoding Windows' Integrated Internet Connection Monitor?

I have WINDOWS XP and Windows 7 and both monitors have a difference. Monitor in Windows XP displays less numbers than Windows 7. Both of monitors do not display measurement next to all these numbers so i don't KNOW where are kilobytes, megabytes and gigabytes like on this picture in Windows XP:

Can somebody tell me how to measure data in Windows XP and Windows 7?I am not sure if this has to do with what you are after... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transmission_Control_Protocol Quote from: Boris_yo on March 21, 2011, 05:05:09 PM

There are plenty of bandwidth monitors out there.

What is it you're trying to accomplish?Just WANT to know bandwidth in real time and what uses it, bandwidth history and ALSO have ability to limit download/upload. Quote from: Boris_yo on March 27, 2011, 07:01:49 PM

Solve : Help with the creation of an internet network?

Answer»

Hi all.

We [family] have just joined up to an Optus internet plan, whereby we received a 'box' which connects both the the phone line, and has one ethernet out port. At the moment, the ethernet port is CONNECTED straight to the Tower of the desktop, and I can type this [the internet works]. However, we also have a ZyXEL [Prestige 600 Series] 'modem[?]' which has another 4 out ethernet ports, as well as creating a wireless network. Optimally, we want the Optus box to be connected to the ZyXEL router [?] where we can connect more devices onto the network, and make use of the wireless network that would APPEAR...however things are never that easy.

In the ZyXEL instructions, they only talk about connecting the modem directly to the socket in the wall, which is not applicable in this case, where the 'in port' is labeled as "DSL" and has the same size and shape as an internet cord. We bought a cable titled "RJ12 to RJ45 Modular Telephone Linecord" to try and connect the ethernet port to the modem, but the only result is a connection to the desktop where the internet is displayed as being "Limited or no internet connection". I am at a complete loss at what to do now.

If any of you could shed some light on this, it would be greeaaaaatly appreciated.

Many thanks.Connect the wireless router to the modem.

There should be a cat5 plug on the back of the wireless modem for a HARDWIRE connection (desktop)It sounds like the ZyXel is a combination DSL modem and router.  If that's the case, you don't need the box Optus gave you.Is the ZyXEL Prestige 600 Series a modem that you had with a different service?  May not work most services have specific software/firmware installed that is specifically configured to only work on their networks.

Look on the back of the ZyXEL see if there is a plug named "WAN" or "uplink" or "Internet." (RJ45 connection)?

If no then you can call the ISP and request a modem with wireless or purchase a wireless router and connect it.
I managed to slove part of that problem by just plugging the ethernet cord [from the optus box] into what I presumed was only an 'out' ethernet slot in the ZyXEL, with slot no.2 leading to the computer....who would've thought.

However, that is only half of the problem solved - I still need to create a wireless network that functions. Or at least, would like to.

Are you sure 192.168.1.1 is the correct IP address for your router?  This can vary by brand of router.  Do you have documentation for your ZyXEL router?

There is no "in and out" with ethernet.

What I would suggest doing is taking the Optus out of the equation, and try re-configuring the Zyxel with the username and password for your new internet connection.

If you can't do that, then:

Take the Optus off the network, put the Zyxel into the network.

Setup a wireless network on the Zyxel.

Disable DHCP on the Zyxel.

Take the Zyxel out of the network, put the Optus back in.

Connect an ethernet cable to the Zyxel and the Optus.

You should now have an internet connection and a wireless network, although it might be a little bit more COMPLICATED than that.

Try my first suggestion, and let us know how you get on.  If it doesn't work I'll expand my second suggestion so it's a through as I can be.I can't get rid of the optus because it also has the phone line attached...

Though that second option...it sounds really good. Would you, please, be able to expand? [Possibly as a sidenote, what is the IP whatnot, and why does it not work at the moment?]

Thankies! Quote from: nightreaper on March 03, 2011, 10:42:38 PM

Does the Zyxel not have a DSL (phone line) connection?  If so, you should be able to re-configure it to work.

I'll have a look at the documentation you linked to and see if I can offer up some more percise step by steps for you.

Also, which one is your Optus box? http://help.optuszoo.com.au/help/dsl/connected/windows/optus_modemsApproach 1:

Find the welcome letter that came from Optus, this has a username and password on it.

Disconnect all cables from the Optus box and put it to one side.

Plug Zyxel box in, with the DSL line (normally grey) to the phone socket (the DSL port of the mircofilter) and the ethernet (normally yellow) to your computer.

Browse to http://192.168.1.1

The default password is 1234, enter this when prompted by the website (or use your custom password as applicable).

Use the Internet Access Wizard Setup, and when prompted enter the username and password from the welcome letter.

If this wizard fails, then set the connection up manually, ensuring that Encapsulation = PPPoE, and leave all other settings as the default on the ISP Parameters for Internet Access page.

Approach 2:

Disconnect all cables from the Optus box and put it to one side.

Plug Zyxel box in, with the ethernet (normally yellow) to your computer.

Browse to http://192.168.1.1

The default password is 1234, enter this when prompted by the website (or use your custom password as applicable).

Select "Go to Advanced setup"

Select "LAN" in the left-hand column

Select "DHCP Setup"

Disable DHCP -- I'm not sure where the box/button you need to press is, as I don't have a screen shot of it available.

***

Unplug the Zyxel box

Plug the Optus box back in

Plug the Zyxel box in, and attach an ethernet cable from the Optus to the Zyxel.

Attach an ethernet cable from the Zyxel to your desktop.

The network should now work, and you should have wireless.  If this isn't the case then add these steps in where the ***'s are:

Select IP (in the LAN menu)

Change the IP address to 10.1.1.254 (subnet mask of 255.255.255.0)

Note: If you have to do this, it is also worth setting the Optus box up so that it doesn't assign 10.1.1.254 to something else (unlikely but possible).  To do that:

Browse to http://10.1.1.1

CLICK Advanced Setup

Then you're looking for DHCP settings, so it might be under LAN?  Then change the range from 10.1.1.2 to 10.1.1.200.  Sorry but I don't have screen shots so this step is rather vague.

Finally:

Let me know how you get on. Quote from: Sid on March 04, 2011, 02:35:09 AM
Approach 1:

Find the welcome letter that came from Optus, this has a username and password on it.

Disconnect all cables from the Optus box and put it to one side.

Plug Zyxel box in, with the DSL line (normally grey) to the phone socket (the DSL port of the mircofilter) and the ethernet (normally yellow) to your computer.

I got a bit confused [most likely through no fault of your own] at this point. The 'socket' that is embedded in the wall is not a phone line, nor an ethernet port, but a round cable that is the same on both ends [for refference, the guide that I'm looking at is http://www.cisco.com/web/consumer/support/userguides2/4012160.pdf] - it is described as being a "F Connector", or an "RF Cable".

The ZyXEL doesn't have an input for that, so I plugged in the phone line from the "tel1" port in the optus to the "DSL" in the ZyXEL. Then I used an ethernet cable from the ZyXEL to the computer, but the result was a connection with "little or no connectivity", and when I try to get onto the 'http://192.168.1.1' I get a "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" message. So that makes it impossible to move on.....am I plussing things in wrong?

Thanks!

With this one, is it the same 'plug layout' as the one above? By that, I mean, is the ZyXEL plugged via phone line to the tel1 port on the Optus box [a Scientific Atlanta dpc2203C model]? Or is it just standing alone?

Thanks so much for your help, though...

Solve : WRT54G Router?

Answer»

Hello All,
I have a Linksys WRT54G Router and thought I would change some of the settings, it has been a long time since I opened the Admin page... the router works fine, I am on the internet but when I type http://192.168.1.1 in the Navigation toolbar, I cannot access the site, nothing comes up.. have rebooted, etc without any success.. I still have the CD that came with the router, would that help me access the page??
Thank you,
Larry is there a little pin HOLE or something that you can reset the router to factory defaults?I have done all the rebooting and factory defaults with no success... but I may try again but don't have time this weekend...My desktop says IP address 192.168.1.100, assigned by DHCP.. my laptop, which is on a wireless card, says Client IP Address 192.168.1.102I did PING the router on Command Prompt and got a reply, but went to attempt to open setup page and could not... tomorrow if I have time will use the cd to see if the firmware is corrupt and perhaps fix it, if not there is a GOOD chance that part of the router may be dead..just speculating.. works fine otherwise, just cannot access the setup page...

LarryOk, Yes I am not sure what is up, or why you couldn't long on to it. I have had ISSUES in the past where I will turn off DCHP and can't log on it.. but it sounds liek you have it on anywayWhen you run an IPConfig what shows for Default Gateway.

Here is the link for other resets as well.

http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=eaa3127db5f4402584c959a7251e754c_4008.xml&pid=96&slnid=5
Pressing the Reset button on the back of the router for 30 seconds will reset your router to its factory default settings.  All of the settings of the router will then be erased and the router’s IP address will become 192.168.1.1.
The IP address for the router is 192.168.1.1, at least that is what the 4 Replies say.. will try the reloading the software sometime today if I have time and go from there...will post the results after I do it...Thanks for all the replies!

LarryPinged the router a couple of more times, apparently it woke the router up,  ,  and were able to access the setup page...had the cd ready to reload but luckily didn't have to.. all is fine..................... this time...

Thanks again for all the replies and EFFORTS to assist...
LarryMine does this often also. I hold the reset button in, pull the power wire and hold for and additional 30 seconds. Sometimes I mus do this 2-3 times before it will reset. I have at one time been able to get back to the setup page without clearing all settings. Just the routers little quirk

Solve : disappearing Workgroup computers?

Answer»

Hello all,
I have a computer that I just formatted to windows 7 and made sure it was fully updated on a laptop. I made sure I have SET it to "home" network, and that the workgroup is the same name. Still no dice at seeing the other computers. so I mapped a folder on one of the computers as a network drive, that worked, and then all of the sudden, BAM I can see all the computers on my home network! Then I RESTARTED the computer and was back at square one, not seeing anything   Now this morning my wife calls me and tells me that not even the mapped drives are working! I had her turn off the Firewall, and still no go.
   I am so frustrated,
Let me know if there is any other info I can give you.
PS it was formatted under windows XP, and I was having the same issue.

Could it be hardware?  All of the other computers I have on that router work, and network fine, other then this one...Sounds like it may be hardware. What is the manufacturer of the laptop?

I assume that it is an on-board NIC. I would try a USB NIC to see if it does the same thing.I am using wireless, it is a gateway laptop, about 3 years old... would a wireless adapter do that KIND of things? I may take one in and see if there is a difference.  Thanks for the advice.
it just feels like I am MISSING a check box somewhere...  I went into the advanced sharing options and and turned on FILE sharing to everyone..  but still nothing..
Oh I almost forgot to mention, the internet works fine thru all of this..

Solve : Can I Use 2 Wifi Routers together??

Answer»

Basically I've got TWO Wireless routers handy and poor signal at the opposite end of my house. Can I set up the routers to broadcast the same domain name and internet connection or will that just cause a conflict reducing reliability and signal strength?

Converting this question into English: "Can I use two wifi routers in tandem?"Yes.
The ideal way is to have the two routers directly connected via cable.Depending on the makes / models, you can do some pretty clever stuff.

I do exactly what you're talking about using 2 x Netgear DG834G's using the Advanced Wireless features, without a cable running between them.

With that said though, it's only a small house, and both routers have to be in range of each other for this to work.Awesome, so If I connect the two routers together via cable (old one used to be connect up to a basic cable modem anyway) and set the same domain name, password and channel to MATCH it should work? I can't use a serial cable then? j/k

In another thread someone tried to use the dsl cable between two routers, so since then I've tried to be a bit clearer, sorry about that Ok, I now have a unified domain name, 802.11gn wifi with no where being below excellent signal strength. But I'm GETTING different network speeds:

On the directly WIRED computer (LAN) I get ~31Mbps
On the laptop next to the routers I get ~5Mbps
On the furthest computer from the routers I get ~19Mbps

So Direct = 31Mbps
5ft = 5Mbps
15ft = 19Mbps

What am I doing wrong?Small addition: I have now set my network to g to normalise connection speeds but that reduces the signal strength. My old router is only capable of b & g btw.

(It appears that g has a limit of 20Mbps if i'm reading wikipedia correclty.) Quote from: Accessless on March 12, 2011, 03:11:34 PM

B = 11Mbps
G = 54Mbps (but any encryption will eat into that)

When you SAY domain name, do you mean the wireless SSID (network name)?

How did you get the speeds?Sorry, yes I mean SSID and my listed speeds are from testing various computers on speedtest.net (so their internet connection speeds). Quote from: Accessless on March 13, 2011, 03:24:39 AM

So... Any ideas on how to pump that speed down a wifi connection? Quote from: Accessless on March 13, 2011, 11:05:37 AM

So you've got three different computers all registering different speeds...

Ok, can you run speed tests on each one in isolation (so no other internet activity on the LAN (i.e. one at a time))?

Have you got any wifi analysing tools?  It might be worth seeing what channels you're using, and if there are any clearer channels (if there are lots of wifi networks around).

Solve : Wireless Router Repeater Help?

Answer»

I have a Belkin router F5D8236-4 and just got a Netgear Wnr2000v3 to try to use the repeater option on it and can not get it to work at all. I get a lot of mixed stuff from reading so i thought this netgear could repeat the signal of my belkin across house more and wouldn't need 2 new routers.

Belkin is base cause it has no repeater option and netgear to repeat but i cant get it to work at all been messing with it for hours and nothing except one point i turn netgear router on and off and notice the belkin wifi light was going on and off so i must of connect but no internet.

Maybe someone can help me though this setup or tell me if i need two repeaters, like i SAID i get mixed stuff from things i read on web that i only need one repeater and my old belkin could be base since it didn't have repeater option.

Thanks for any help.Only one router needs to have this extra feature.
Here is a list of routers that an do this:
http://www.connectedhome.infopint.com/dd-wrt-capable-wireless-routers/
The KEY here is the term "DD-WRT" which means the router can work as a wireless repeater. The above link has additional information that MAY help you.

Always something and its not supported my version 3. I went and got a Netgear wnce2001 wireless to Ethernet.

So its WORKING now, Up to a point
Just people hooked on the Main router and second router cant share files now. Using windows my network places.

My setup is Dsl modem Ethernet cabled to belkin wifi router then my Netgear wnce2001 picks wifi up from belkin and plugs in by Ethernet cable to my netgear wifi router.

Belkin router is ip 192.168.2.1 and the netgear wnce2001 is ip 192.168.2.20 and netgear router is 192.168.2.21. but anything that connects to it has the ip of 192.168.3.2 or up it WONT let me make it 192.168.2.22.

Solve : What does this symbol mean??

Answer»

Above my WI FI connection there is something that LOOKS like a little shield? It is something like this:

ATT                                        CONNECTED (BARS here)

excellent is the connectivity level, but right over the bars is a small shield?

TYWhat VERSION of OS are you using and what SOFTWARE are you using to connect to the wireless? For a guess you're using Windows 7?

If so, the shield means that your WIFI doesn't have a password set on it.

Solve : What does a computer automatically upload??

Answer» I wonder when I get statistics of uploads when my laptop is connected to the internet but I have uploaded nothing personally. Yes they are not material but their monthly and annual totals are. Anyone with idea please help. Thanks in advance.Programs: anti-virus; firewall; MS Word; WINDOWS Media Player; IE; FIREFOX; anything that CONNECTS the internet more than likely sends data. All network connections are two-way; Your browser or other SOFTWARE requests data which is sent in packets. After each packet is sent, the receiving computer sends an acknowledgement and then the next one is sent. These acknowledgement packets that you send BACK are uploads.

Sorry for my belated gratitude. I have understood. Thanks a lot.

Solve : Help with Wireless Internet Connection?

Answer»

Okay, so this might be  kinda LONG but hopefully I will give enought information for someone to help. Please help! My computer was full of VIRUSES and spyware. Long story short, ended up having a techie friend up back up my files on an external hard drive, wipe the dang thing, and reinstall windows. Ever since, I can't get my wireless internet working. As of now I am connected via ethernet cable. I have a Dell Laptop and my wireless router/modem is a 2wire Gateway model# 2701HG-B. The device manager says my LAN card is working properly. I had to reset Windows to manage networks. Now in the Wireless Network CONNECTION window it just says "No wireless networks found in range." On the router, all the lights are green except for the wireless one which is not lit up at all. I don't imaging this is a problem with the 2wire because it was working just fine before the virus issue with the laptop. My laptop is my only computer so no way to test another computer with it. When I go to Control Panel>Network Connections, the Wireless Network Connection's status is "Not Connected, Firewalled." I even tried unplugging the router and disconnecting everything else, then plugging it all back in and turning the computer back on.....and got the same thing. I'm so frustrated! What can I do?I am no expert but have you tried resetting your router?Yes, that was one of the first things I tried. The lights blinked off, then it went through a self test. The lights all came back on to green except the wireless light. (grrr...)Laptop or Desktop?

If it's a laptop there should be a switch somewhere on the unit that you will have to make sure is turned on.  Then open your network places and manage network connections and make sure the wireless card is enabled.

If it's a desktop then you should have both a wired and wireless indication in the network connection window.  You will need to disable the wired to get the routing to work on the wireless card has been my experience.

Before you go through all that though, with the wired link up and able to access the internet, open the command prompt.  type in:  ipconfig /all and not the GATEWAY address.

Open IE and type in just the numbers:  ie....   192.168.0.254 for instance and press enter.  This should bring up a username and password prompt or take you to the routers settings page.  Once there you will need to find and enable the wireless network, setting the SSID and passphrase as previously done.  If you don't know how contact your isp or whomever installed the DSL/CABLE for you.  They will usually walk you through the setup process.  Once it's rebooted you should be able to detect the wireless network.  Make sure you have the passphrase written down before you exit the router settings.  You will need that to connect.  Once you have the connection going.  Then suggest you disable the SSID broadcast wich is a unchecked box in the router settings.  And reboot again.
Yes, it is a laptop but there is no switch. It's automatic. The wireless card is enabled and working properly according to the device manager. I've ACTUALLY already done all that with command prompt. By going to http://gateway.2wire.net I get directly to my router's settings page. I've gone back through the setup and all that information is still there. I didn't have to re-enter anything. I'm going to reboot again. Maybe I did something different this time around......I'm at a loss..... Quote from: tiffy09 on April 14, 2009, 06:24:33 PM

Which OS and SP?
Does thisCompaq Presario 700 have a Wi-Fi card?Hai,
I says that your driver for your network card is not installed or did not start correctly at start up. Problem might be that your laptop drive cannot able to update properly. So simply restore your system by GOING to "system restore".
The Compaq Pre. F700 is a GOOD laptop. All you have to do is update your 6401A driver to a new version compatible with Windows XP.

Solve : Trying to find source of network transport install?

Answer»

I removed a virus from my computer this morning and now I have 2 files missing , one of them is KEEPING me from being able to use the internet. When I rebooted it, the MESSAGE " TCP/IP Network Transport not installed"
Is this a file on the windows XP disc or the software from Zoomtown? I hooked my sons computer up to my cords and his works fine so I know it's not the modem.
Thank youYou network is missing a component. It is a bit of software.
You are using Windows XP?
You need to do the network wizard again. You may need to have the install CD at hand if the network protocols were destroyed on the problem computer.
In some cases a virus may do damage to a slice of software sot that the software chunk has to be installed again. Running the Network Wizard should do the job.I found out what to do and I wanted to post it so others will be able to fix it if theirs does it. This is from Microsoft support:

Cause:
There are known spyware programs that install layered SERVICE providers (LSPs) on client computers to gather user data. When Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) removes spyware programs, it also removes the spyware-based LSPs. However, Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) does not restore any LSPs after it removes the spyware.

resolution:
To resolve this problem if you are running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), FOLLOW these steps:

   1. Rebuild the Winsock LSP chain. To do this, follow these steps:
         1. Log on to the Microsoft Windows XP workstation as an administrator.
         2. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
         3. At the command prompt, type the following, and then press ENTER:
            netsh Winsock reset
When the program is finished, you will receive the following message:
Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog. You must restart the machine in order to complete the reset.

I did this in about 30 seconds and it was resolved...I hope this HELPS someone else.

I wasn't using the windows anti spyware (beta)  but it worked the same!!Thanks for sharing.

Solve : 1 of 2 computers wont connect wired anymore suddenly?

Answer»

Hi,

Thanks for reading my post.

I am at a hotel long term which has wired internet.  My girlfriend and I each have a laptop.  We got sick of taking turns plugging into the internet so I decided to hook up a router to use it as a splitter.  I soon realized that wasnt going to work and did some research.  I realized my problem and configured the router to bridged mode and disabled DHCP USING the instructions I found here.  http://njcomputerguys.blogspot.com/2010/03/bridging-mode-for-verizon-westell-a90.html .

I THOUGHT i was a genius and solved our problem as my computer started working great.  But now her computer wont CONNECT even when plugged DIRECTLY into the wall!  And I did nothing with her laptop except plug the cat 5 into it.  All the configuring was done from my computer.

I am stumped and she is pissed.

Her computer wouldnt even get to the router config screen if that is info that would help.

Please help.  She needs her computer to submit her college assignments.

We both use vista , the router is a westell a-90.

Thanks in advance - David
You need to discuss this with the hotel management.Putting a router into their system can do harm to the system. Like an ADDRESS conflict, which will stall the system.
You should instead do wireless sharing between the two computers.  One PC wired, both with wireless, network shearing turn on for the PC that has both wired and wireless. Sharing turned on. Ad-Hoc wireless. That should not interfere with the hotel network. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 15, 2011, 12:22:22 AM

If the router isn't issuing IP addresses (ie DHCP is off) then it shouldn't cause any problems.

I'd be tempted to have a look at the settings for the network connection on the GF's laptop to make sure it's setup for DHCP (Obtain an IP address automatically & Obtain DNS server address automatically), and also try running ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew.

If you're still having problems, run ipconfig /all on the troublesome machine and post the results.

To run ipconfig:

Start -> run -> type "cmd" -> press Enter -> type ipconfig (with relevant "switches" [items after the "/"]) -> press Enter

Solve : Help with internet setup?

Answer»

Okay I'll try to make a long story short.
I have satelite internet and have it hooked to my laptop.  I tried to change it to my desktop and it will hookup BUT Internet Explorer CONTINUES to say it can not display webpage.  I figured out that I was using AOL and then it allowed me to connect.  I do not want to use the AOL so I removed it from my computer.  Internet Explorer will still not work.  That is the first problem.
The second problem is...I bought a wireless router and it worked fine with my laptop.  Then I set up a password for the wireless and removed the AOL from the desktop and NOW the wireless will not work for my laptop and the desktop will show a connection and will be pinging but it will not display the webpage.
I have spent 2 hours each with both the satelite company and the router company and both have said it has to do with my computer....Well of course the computer company wants major $$$$$ cause it's out of warranty!  PLEASE HELP!  It is really difficult having 7 of us and 1 computer that will work with the internet!
Thank you!Okay I forgot this one last thing....
When I hook the cable into the desktop and try to use my laptop wirelessly it ALSO says Internet Explorer can not load webpage.  And still my wireless is showing that it is working and pinging.  Then when I hook the cable back in to the laptop the Internet Explorer works fine.Does it still browse hooked to the laptop?  Hook the modem to the laptop only.

Here is a possible reason why.

Your computer has a HARDWARE address called a MAC that never changes, and therefore uniquely identifies your computer. When your Internet Service Provider sets up your connection, they register your computer’s MAC address with their system. From that point on, your computer must identify to their system with its MAC in order to be allowed access to the Internet. Since your computer’s MAC is a unique address, any router that you might later set up as an intermediary between your broadband modem and computer(s) will have a different MAC. Your router’s MAC will be unknown to your ISP, and so they may deny Internet connectivity to your router.

What router are you using?

I'm sorry it took so long..I had a virus.
The router I'm using is Netgear.  Hope you got the virus issue resolved.

Remove the router plug the laptop via cable directly into the modem does it still browse?
Now do the same with the desktop does it browse?
Now put the router back on and do the same via cable.  Then try the Wireless.

Solve : Internet stopped working: Please advise how to diagnose problem!?

Answer»

I have been using this cable broadband connection at this address on an XP machine for several years with no problems.

Today it has suddenly stopped working. When I boot in a Ubuntu 10 Live CD the connection problem remains. However, my laptop connected to the same modem router is fine.

How should I go about diagnosing the nature of the problem on this XP machine? I would be GRATEFUL for any help. Thank you.If you have a spare cat5 cable around ...swap the network cable and see what happens. ALSO TRY a different router port if you have a port available. If you have a spare NIC not USED, you can even install a different network adapter in a spare PCI slot and try to re-establish connection through a new NIC as a last measure.

If the laptop is connecting via Cat5 cable, plug the computer into the cable used for the laptop and this way you can isolate it back to the SYSTEM vs cable, router, etc.

Solve : Network connection gets dropped every so often?

Answer»

I have this setup at home:  The modem is UPSTAIRS and is connected to the wall and a Belkin Wireless-G adapter.  I have three computers at home, one desktop and two laptops.  All are wireless, the desktop is upstairs and has a wireless adapter.  The laptops are downstairs.

Every so often the wireless connection just gets dropped and none of the computers can connect wirelessly to the internet.  Is it possible that the range of the wireless G adapter is not that wide and switching to a wireless N adapter will increase the range and thereby eliminate the problem?  The distance from the room with the router to the room with the laptop downstairs is maybe 25 feet.

Also how do I determine which channel to useI solved this on my system by discovering that I had too many firewalls active.

Each computer has its own MS firewall........turn them off.

The Belkin router has its own firewall......turn it off.

The modem will have a fire wall and that will be sufficient.

Be sure to secure your wireless with a password and do not create a visitor password.

I point everything to channel 6.

This works for my system which consists of  1.) Sorenson Video Relay phone with its modem; 2.) Atlantic cable modem; 3.) Belkin G Wireless router; 4.) 1997 HP Brio desk top with Wireless adapter and running Win2000Pro 5.&6.) wireless laptops both running Vista.

Most modems do not have firewalls - most routers do. And there is no reason you can't have both a software and a hardware firewall active.Allan, So then what is causing the network connection to drop every so often?  Would an N router fare better than a G router
Is this Cable, Satellite, DSL?

Does this happen at the same time every day?  Have you tried connecting each computer one at a time to see if one of them can be the cause?

Are you loosing network connection or just internet?

Are all systems configured to obtain IP Address automatically?

Some times having the modem and router IP address the same can cause issues.

Could some one access the modem and or router and set time limits and or access times?
its cable internet.  I lose internet connection, and I cant even access the other computers so it is a network issue.  Systems are all configured to have static ips, cause I was facing the same problem when I had DHCP on all systems.  Try pressing the reset button of the modem and then reconnect. Its not always a router g or n signal strength but interferences. sorry if I will give u an advice though I'm just a newbie here. try to change your wireless channel in your router. 1, 3, 6 or 9 will be fine you can check which of these channel will do. sometimes it helps to some of my clients. The problem is not that I cannot reconnect the internet again after I lose the network signal.  When the internet connectivity is lost, I need to go to the router, disconnect the plug (essentially a reset) then wait for 10 seconds.   And then the computers connect to the internet automatically.  I have also tried using different channels on the router in an effort to keep the connection stable, but the disconnection problem still occurs.
I did think it was because of interference, but then how is it that  the internet connections in the wifi hotspots like at starbucks and mcdonalds never lose connection?
What if there is a problem within the router itself ?Well, it is possible that there could be a problem with the router, but I doubt it.  If  there was, then there would no internet connectivity at all
Actually, it could be the router's fault, as this happened to me:

I had a D-Link router placed on top of a OEM DSL modem and sometimes, the router shut down due overheat

(If you wonder, i have other equipment now, and a nice fiber connection)well okay i can understand the oveheating problem but i dont have my router on top of my modem.  Still what youre saying could be true

Did it work before?
Check first one machine via wireless connection on current network setup if the issue EXIST then ADD or connect another PC by WLAN. Also by distance or signal strength, move the laptop NEAR the wireless router and check the wireless connection issue. Check all wireless adapter properties uncheck proxy settings, VPN and remove specified IP or DNS address and use auto(TCP/IP.v4.v6). Use Windows Wireless Zero Configuration(XP) startup/WLAN auto config(Vista or 7) type "Automatic" on all adapter. Click start->run->type services.msc->look for the WLAN config. or WZC startup type double click and change to auto, click "apply". On your router settings mixed mode change or toggle from b/g/n to b/g or vice-versa to support all wireless adapter standard for your laptop/desktop.
Quote
Try pressing the reset button of the modem and then reconnect
Look for a small hole behind the router/modem(unplugged) and PRESS it with a paper clip.jason,

The wireless internet works, thats not the issue.  The issue is that I keep losing the internet connection every so often and I have to manually reset the router.  So Im wondering why I keep facing this problem when the internet connection at hotspots stays nice and stable all the time.  I cant be having more interference than those places, can I?

Solve : how to remove old website from internet?

our old website of several years ago is still on the internet and i DONT kno how to take it down, can anyone give guidance? What do you mean by "on the internet"?

Do you mean cached by Google?  Or is it live right now?Well, who hosts your website?  Surely, you must KNOW this.  How did you launch it in the first place?

You need to contact the hosting service and close your account with them.  You could also allow your domain name registration to expire; this would cause an error message to appear on any computer that tried to view the website. The problem is it is a very old website, we have had 2 intervening sites.  it was hosted by Virgin media who no longer do webhosting.   have had no luck with them.  just wondered if another way round it.  i dont have any administration information, the website in question was created at least 10 years ago and ceased to be in used approx 7 years ago i think and we dont have admin details.  does that make more sense?! If they once provided fee-based hosting, they may no longer be doing that, but they are still in business as an ISP, right?  And, clearly, the website is still alive and the URL indicates it being hosted by Virgin media.  However, it appears to have been hosted under a free hosting option, as indicated by the word "freespace" in the URL.  It's not uncommon for ISPs to provide some free disk space to their clients for hosting a personal website.

So, again, the website is still alive and, the way I see it, you no other choice but to work with Virgin media to get this resolved.  Surely, someone there in tech support is aware of this free web space that is, or formerly was, available to their customers for a personal website. Solve : Info. on HSPA+ G4?

Answer»

I'm wondering if anyone here has any idea if I can expect better download and upload speeds with this service (HSPA+)than with what I currently have. I live in a rural area and up until Mar 31 (the day that they release the HSPA+ service) the best that I can get is the service listed below. I realize that the speeds that I receive probably depend on distance from the cell tower etc., etc. The only thing that can add to this is to say that I currently receive excellent reception at my home on my cell phone.

This description was copied from another thread.

Well the ISP refers to it as a Broadband Internet Service. Now bear with me ,you may be sorry that you asked. My understanding is; a fiber optic cable runs to Fire Hall in a small town approx. 5 miles from where I live. From there the signal is then transmitted to a fairly large tower in my small village . From there the signal is transmitted to a (they call it a) radio that sits on the roof of my home. From the radio they use (I believe it's) a cat.5 cable to my PC.

The speeds that I'm currently receiving are approx.as follows;  Download  0.80 Mbps -  Upload 0.22 Mbps
Ping is all over the place but typically around 60 ms.

Ping is all over the place but typically around 60 ms.

Thank you, overthehill

Are you on DSL at the minute?  If so, what's your noise ratio / margin like?

To REALLY get your question answered you'd need to talk to the service provider.  I wouldn't use the signal your phone gets as an indicator, as it's a different band completely, and it depends if the local towers are enabled and all sorts.  Also, be aware of things like "breathing" and other things that can easily affect the coverage areas. Thanks for replying .I'm on what my ISP refers to as "Broadband Internet Service" as I described in my original post. My current "High SPEED Internet" (and I use the term loosely) is very slow as I've indicated earlier.I was just kind of hoping that possibly someone was on this particular type of service (HSPA+) and could give some idea as to what to expect.
Actually I've already made arrangements to try the new service. Almost anything would be better (except dial-up) to have than my current service. I realize too that my cell is on a completely different band. I just added this to show that reception from that tower is not a problem. For whatever reason I have a neighbor that lives less than 1/4 mile from me, he's with the same provider as I am, we have the identical cell phone an his reception is lousy. We're out in  a rural area with no big buildings, no hydro lines, nothing different that we can think of, yet I get great reception and he doesn't. Go figure?
Just for more info. I did try EVDO last year and the speeds with that were somewhere between dial-up and what I currently have. From the info. that I've read, HSPA+ is far superior to EVDO . I'm hoping that HSPA+ is also superior to what I currently have. I'm sure in a few weeks I'll have my answer.

Again thanks, overthehill

Based on this article you should get much faster speeds.

Thanks for your interest rthompson80819. Actually I had CHECKED out that link, found some others and from the reading that I've done it does look promising. The ISP makes it sound good too. When talking to a person from a satellite office (where I'll be dealing) yesterday, I was told that they still don't have much info. on HSPA+. No pricing etc.,etc. and very little ELSE. All she was able to provide is to say was it will be really good.? This is the same office that said (albeit last year) many people that were using EVDO were happy with that. After the little reading about this that I've done, it actually sounds like this technology has been around for some time and I was thinking that my area was left behind. I'm surprised that more people in rural areas either don't have this as an option, and if they do, I wonder why they are not using it?. Perhaps it's not as good as they say, or maybe it's terribly expensive?

I guess I'm getting just a little anxious. Thanks again, overthehill Quote from: overthehill on March 12, 2011, 11:07:01 AM

That's the nature of phone cells.  There was a really good article on Gizmodo the other week explaining it all.

Solve : Can one router connect wirelessly to another router??

Answer»

I have several computers at home, the laptops have built in wireless adapters and so can access the internet from anywhere in the house.  The desktops however do not have builtin wifi adapters so the only OPTION for them to get wireless internet is to put an external wireless adapter on each.

What I want to do is to have the upstairs wireless adapter communicate with another wireless adapter downstairs, so that I can then hardwire the downstairs router to a desktop COMPUTER downstairs.  Is this possible?
Yes. It is documented. But why not just use an adapter meant to do that? Routers are three or four times more expensive that simple adapters.
Here is a link about a LinkSys router on Tom's hardware. Read the posts and note what they hard to do to make it work.
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/20508-43-using-linksys-router-access-point
For all the trouble, I would just buy a cheep $15 USB gizmo  and be done with nit.It can be done, I'm doing exactly that:

A wifi router downstairs, and one upstairs with a couple of servers plugged into it.

With that said, Geek-9pm is right, if you don't already have the 2 routers, buying one just for one machine is un-economical.

Where is the master phone socket, upstairs or downstairs?

Btw, you could probably also install internal wifi adapters, so external aren't the only way. sid,

I already have two routers, thats why I was hoping it could be done.  How do you get one router to wirelessly SEE the other router, how did you do it

sid,

My routers are both Netgear DG834G's, and it's a setting called WDS mode, and it's under:

Advanced Wireless Settings
WDS Mode
Enable Wireless Bridging and Repeating
Repeater with Wireless Client Association (you set the MAC address of the 2nd router here)

Then I set the SSID the same, and the password the same.  On these routers it only works with WEP, and if you're using MAC filtering you'll need to create the rules on both.  Also, it's worth changing the IP address of at least one of them BEFORE you start.

If you google Wireless Bridging and Repeating there should be some good tutorials available. Quote from: shashgo on March 10, 2011, 06:18:59 PM

I don't see why two routers are needed here.  Surely, your wireless router has 4 ports on back for ethernet cable connections, right?  By "hardwire", you mean connecting to an ethernet port, right?  I can't image what else that would mean.  So, you can "hardwire" it to any computer and still have your wireless access.  soybean,
youre correct, the router has ethernet ports on it.  However, its quite a distance from where the router is to downstairs where the computer is.  So Id have to use a really long ethernet wire if I wanted to connect the computer to that router.  So what Im trying to do is have a router downstairs communicate with the router upstairs so that I can then just run a short ethernet wire from the router downstairs to the computer downstairs
Ethernet is good for 300 feet.
Wireless 802.11g does not do 300 feet indoors going through walls.

That said, it's not ALWAYS possible to run a cable through the walls (like when you're renting), and it looks untidy if you run it along the walls, floor or stairs.

Solve : New internet installation?

Answer»

My uncle just had virgin media at his house to install new phone line and stuff to get him connected to the net for the first time, Now from what my uncle told me the virgin media technician as done it wireless. I think this is because he lives in a area where UNDERGROUND fibre optics have not been laid yet, He told him that you dont have a wireless adapter to which you need one to pick up the signal, The hub is down stairs and the pc is up, He did say that it could of been done via ethernet had they been closer, He told him he needs a usb wireless adapter to get it all going, Does this sound right ? I only ask because he is gonna buy one friday, They are roughly £10 - £15 so not to bad but I wanna make sure that's right before he does buy it, Cheers :-)
If they've installed internet for him yet he isnt connected to his computer then this isnt satisfactory, to be honest. My Dad has virgin, his main connection came in downstairs and his PC is up, he had virgin to put the internet cable up the outside of the house and over the roof, so the cable went into the back bedroom. Is is bad service, that but my personal opinion, i'm not a big fan of Virgin Internet anyway.  I agree with you mate. I told him they should of made sure he was online proper, no doubt now that's he probably signed for it They will be charging him, Just wondering tho mate Does that sound right what the installation guy said that all you need is a usb wireless adapter to get it up N running ?  I just want to make sure he don't buy something that is useless... Cheers :-) Quote from: jay1978 on March 10, 2011, 04:50:27 AM

Yeah, it sounds reasonable.

You can test his internet connection by plugging a machine into one of the ethernet connections on the router.

If his machine (desktop or laptop?) doesn't have a wifi card, it won't be able to pick-up wireless.

I don't want to sound condesending, but it might be worth checking, if it is a laptop, that there definately isn't a wifi card in it (there might be a physical switch, or a FN key combination to enable it) as it's been pretty standard on laptops for the last 5-ish years.
Thats not reasonable at all.   "we cant connect you unless you buy some hardware" attitude, is terrible

Yes, you can check your internet connection by plugging your PC into the router, but this speed will probably be less using wireless. It will be like being charged for a Ferrari but only being given a Nissan micra.

Anyway, if you decide to STICK with the wireless option then he'll need something like this -
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WiFi-WIRELESS-11-N-USB-ADAPTER-LAN-DONGLE-PC-LAPTOP-/260668049428?pt=UK_Computing_Networking_SM&hash=item3cb106c814 Quote from: reddevilggg on March 10, 2011, 05:28:14 AM

Where did you pluck that statistic from?

Unless he's being provided with a >54Mbps connection to the internet then there will be no difference in broadband speed over the wifi.Cheers GUYS, Its a desktop pc. He did use one of those broadband usb topup dongles last week and that worked fine online, He got pretty good speeds, Does this mean he has a wifi card in the pc ? I am not sure if you need a wifi card to use one of those usb broadband dongles. Quote from: jay1978 on March 10, 2011, 05:43:05 AM

The USB broadband dongle is probably a 3G only, but it might be worth checking if it's got WiFi capabilities on it.  There are some pretty advanced ones.

If you can nab the make and model some searching on the web should reveal it's capabilities.

When I say "wifi card", it doesn't have to be internal, it can be a usb thing as well.I think if I remember correctly, My uncle's pc is a brand new one, We TRIED to use the usb BB dongle in it but it kept saying please enable your wifi but when we used it on his new pc it worked perfectly so maybe he has one built in.

Solve : Configuring a new router in win 2003 dhcp server??

Answer»

Hi, guys how are you doing?

I am working in a small company as network administrator. When I joined the company everything was configured by a FORMER network administrator. Right now, I have some difficulties configuring a new Router in DHCP server. Let me explain it in detail.
Well, in this company there were not an internet connections until today but now the administration of the company bought a static DNS from ISP provider and told me that configure the Router to the DHCP server so that, all DHCP clients gonna have an internet connection because soon we will have a web application. right now, my problem is the DHCP server was not configured properly from the beginning because this server address (192.168.0.1) should be reserved to the Router. please Take a look the configuration that i have so far

IP Address = 192.168.0.1
Sub net = 255.255.255.0
Gate way = no
DNS = 192.168.0.1

The Address pool is starting from 192.168.0.20 -192.168.0.254

Now, my question is how can i configure the new Router in this subnet? what address should i give to the Router? the 2nd Question is, they told me it is public address. so, will i add this DNS to the static Routing in the Router or it is enough to add only in the DNS FORWARDERS?

please guys help me?

Ok, so the company has only just got an internet connection, and they have bought a static IP address?

I'm sorry but I need to know more about the network layout before I can help you further.

For example:

Desktops -- Router (running DHCP) -- WWW

In this case all the machines would need the internal IP address of the router set as THIER DNS server and thier default gateway (this would be done AUTOMATICALLY through DHCP if the desktops are setup to recieve DHCP).  Then, the external IP address (and subnet mask) needs to be set to the one provided by the ISP, along with a user name and password.

I can connect to my parents connection when I go over to see them  ..but I wonder if a virus could disable you from connecting to your "usuall/frequent" wifi connection or if somehow I have some files that are messed up in the system......I have not tried to take the laptop to the neighbors house to see if it works from their kitchen table as it should...I know there a possibilty that the signal just is the problem but I am confused because I can see it is available thru my utilty windows.....

does anybodyknow whats going on with this??? reinstall malwarebytes. the error is RELATED to a reinstallation

Wow, a lot of rookies with mal-formed advice today...

The signal idea isn't a bad one, but it won't make the signal stronger, what it will do is, potentially, reduce interference.  Which could be the issue here.

Has your neighbour moved the router, changed the password(s), setup MAC address filtering or done anything else to his/her network recently?

Solve : Computers don't see each other on network?

Answer»

Hello,

I can not see each other coputer on my home network.  I have two computers one is a desktop and one is a laptop.  Both computers are running Windows XP SP3.  Both are connected to a router, the laptop via a wirless connection and the desktop is hard wired to the router.  The router is connected to a DSL modem for internet access.  Both computers can access the internet, however my laptop frequently disconnects from the internet.  I have a printer connected to the desktop.

I have had this network working fine in the past.  I OCCASIONALLY use FILE transfers and use the network to send print jobs from laptop to printer connected to the desktop.

A few months ago a hard a nasty virus on the desktop.  It took some time but finally got rid of it thanks to the help on this site.  During that time I had to reset the network settings a couple of times (mainly the workgroup name kept getting changed, not sure if due to the virus or the efforts to remove it?).  After I got rid of the virus I THINK I had the network working OK, but then shortly after that my router died.  I am using a router that someone I know gave me that had an extra one.  After getting this new router setup, I again believe I had the network working OK, but because I do not do a lot of file/print sharing between the two I don't REMEMBER for sure if I ever had the networking working after installing the new router.

I tried ping the laptop from the desktop yesterday and I got a timed out message.  Today I tried to Ping today the desktop from the laptop and 3 packets were recieved and 1 lost.  I then went back to the destop and was successful in pingging the laptop from the destop.  I still don't see the other computer when I open the View Workgroup Computers window from either computer.

Now I tried to Map a Network Drive.  On the desktop, the laptop computer shows up but none of the shared folders show up under it and OK is greyed out when I click on the laptop icon.  On the laptop, the desktop does not show up when trying to Map a Network drive.  I tried to print a test page from the laptop and that worked.  However I had tried printing from the laptop a couple of times in the past week or so and had not been able to.

So I appear to have some spotty connectivity issues and not file sharing abilities.  Can anyone offer help? Have you got any firewalls ENABLED anywhere? Both computers did have the Windows XP firewall turned on.  I turned both off them off yesterday.  The routers firewall is turned on.  I did have a 3rd party firewall installed on the desktop computer for a while, but I took it off a while ago because I was having some issues with it.I turned off the router firewall and now both computers can see each other and share files.  So that seems to have been the problem.  Next question is how do I protect my computers if I have all the firewalls turned off? Quote from: thammondwis on March 06, 2011, 03:20:40 PM

Ok, there are probably some rules (exceptions) you can setup on the router, and I would say that's the best place to have a firewall on, because it's the gateway.

What make and model is your router, and what firmware is it running? It is a Belkin, model F5D7230-4, Version 1444, Firmware 4.03.03

Basically what im looking for is two broadband connections which both come with 2modems, them two modems connected to a single router which is connected to a single head computer that oversees all the other 8 computers.
So 4computers would have their own internet connection, and the other 4 the same, then my computer being the head computer that oversees control of all 8.
Speed isnt much of an issue because im getting 50mb connections each line Quote from: ne0beatsm0rp98 on March 06, 2011, 09:36:01 AM

Ok, so you want something like the following:

What are you TRYING to achieve, because to keep the two LAN's separate, you don't need the two internet connections.  I don't really "get" why you want this setup.  I could probably help more, and come up with a better design if you expand on what it is you want the outcome to be. Ok its an gaming centre im starting up with. I need two internet connections because max speed i can MAINTAIN per line is 24mbps. Originally thought it was 50mbps but too expensive. So in order to keep gaming speed running smoothly I need two broadband lines. So one line either side of the shop.
Then on my main computer I have an internet cafe software that enables me to CHECK what people are on, restrict times etc.
So what im looking for is for all 8 computers to be connected somehow to my main PC but with both broadband lines running thru the shop. Head recked? yes mine is too But what you have described is what im after yes, something very similiar Quote from: ne0beatsm0rp98 on March 06, 2011, 03:07:32 PM
But what you have described is what im after yes, something very similiar

Ok, I THINK I've got an idea.  I'll get it drawn up and posted.

EDIT:

See the image here: http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5051/5505194691_a156d720d4.jpg

You'll need to decide which web connection 10.10.x.5 goes out on and set the default gateway to that LAN and only that LAN.  Also it will definately need 2 network connection ports.

As long as you don't setup any static routes on the 1-4 machines, and set their default gateway as the router address you should be fine.

Oh, in my drawing all subnet masks should be 255.255.255.0, and I'd be tempted to make sure you use fixed IP addresses (they don't have to be my example ranges) and as you only have 11 devices (or maybe 13 if the switches are managed) it shouldn't be too much of a headache.  I'd set the routers as 10.10.10.200 and 10.10.20.200, but again, feel free to ammend my examples.  For example, if you have a favourite number between 1 and 254, go for that.

Obviously this all depends on if there are any restrictions on the Web Cafe software you have.

ONE LAST EDIT:

Just because I've drawn two switches doesn't mean you need 2 physical switches.  You can get swtiches that let you setup VLAN's, but they're more advanced, so it depends on your comfort level.Excellent.
So lets just say for arguements sake I decide to purchase 2 switches do you know of any that would be perfect?

Sorry to be a pain, im good with a lot of computer work, but advanced networking is my downfall Quote from: ne0beatsm0rp98 on March 07, 2011, 03:18:30 AM

To be fair, any switch with at least 6 ports will do you.  Look for Linksys (the "value" range of Cisco).  To make life easy I'd get two of the same model.

No pain, don't worry about it.

That said, if you can get a 12+ port VLAN-able switch for about the same money as 2 x 6+ port ones, do it.  It's not even that hard to config a Cisco one, and I know some Linksys ones have the functionality and a web interface.  If you do get a proper Cisco one, you'll need the blue serial cable, and a PC with a serial port to configure it.  Also, it's less power draw & less "clutter".  ...Not that you'd save millions on electricity by removing 1 switch, but still. Solve : really weird internet problems with iTunes and Frostwire etc?

Answer»

okay so i finally after a couple months decided to start using my iPod again, so i updated itunesm and downloaded frostwire both from the genuine sites. i went in to start up frostwire and at the bottom is has a little connection meter for the frostwire servers, it always says starting connection, so i decided i would just handle the itunes first. so then i opened up itunes, which had worked perfectly less than 2 or 3 months ago, and it wouldnt connect to the itunes network when i tried to update my ipod touch 2G's OS from 2.1 to 4.2 and when i went to the "help" tab and ran the diagnostics everything passed except "secure LINK to itunes store" so when i clicked the "help" button to the right of it, it came up as "itunes help is unavailable because your computer is not connected to the internet" when it was because i was on youtube and facebook and they both REFRESHED fine. so i went and disabled my windows firewall and it didnt do anything. so i went and asked my MOM if i could USE her laptop to check and sure enough i could run frostwire with no problems and itunes worked fine. her laptop is a 2010 lonevo think pad i think running windows 7 profesional. my computer is a 2004 dell dimension 4600 running XP proffesional please help

Solve : Wireless stopped working after downloading Windows Update?

Answer»

I have Windows XP, Version 2002 and Service Pack 3 (SP3)

I was downloading SP3 updates manually and during this the Windows sw advised that it needed to prepare for the install so 30min later after data clean up, creating cabinets, storing a saving data the process was complete.

Upon restarting my PC I have been unable to use Wireless which was working perfectly up until then.

I can't view any Wireless networks. Though when I start up I do get the message that 'wireless networks' are in range though I can't view them.

I've tried re-installing my ISP SW from CD and it does pick up the networks in range included that of my router but during the instal I get the message: "Wizard could not create a wireless network'.

I have tried the REPAIR facility but this does not work and I get the message that the connection ' cannot be disabled' If I try this manually I'm advised that another program could be using the connection.

I'd be grateful for any advice on this.

Thanks so much

ALBA

Service Pack 3 will ALLOW for the use of WPA, perhaps you need to set it up on the routers end.Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Please excuse me for asking but could you expand on what you mean by 'setting it up at the routers end'.

Thanks again Quantos

AlbaDid you try restarting router, modem (if separate device) by power failing and restarting by re applying power to those devices (and your p.c., laptop)? Does your network use DHCP?

Jimjcmark,
Thanks for taking the time to send me your thoughts. I have tried restarting the Laptop and the router all to no avail.

I'm in Scotland and have a basic router supplied by my ISP and so I'm not sure if I have DHCP

best wishes
AlbaAre you using a patch cable from your laptop to the router or are you using a different computer to access the internet?jcmark,
I'm using another laptop to access the internet using the same router which proves that all is well at the router end.

Thanks

AlbaO.K. Set both laptops next to one another, and turn them on. Find "Control Panel" icon and mouse clik on it on both laptops. After you have the Control Panel screen on both laptops, clik on the "Network Connections" icon (or however it's listed) on both laptops. You should see "Available Networks" HEADING on each laptop and an icon for your wireless network on each. RIGHT clik on each wireless icon on each laptop. Is any information displayed appear to be different between the two laptops? Be careful here, don't change anything, and make any notes for future reference. Then use the cancel button to close out of these screens and close control panel. Let me know what you saw. I know this is rather tedious but I don't know how to do it any other way. By the way, on the laptop that won't communicate is there a button like a FUNCTION key on the keyboard or on the back of laptop that turns on wireless function?

Jim Jim,
There is hw switch on the non wireless working PC (NWPC) and when I move this I get a message to say on or off so all is OK there.

When I right click the wireless icon within NW connections the drop down menus are the same though on the NWPC I can view Status as there is not connection. I also can't disable as I get the message that the Connection may be using a protocal that does not support PLUG&PLAY. In the Wireless working PC (WPC) I can disable the connection. The WPC is an IBM T42 and the NWPC is a Lenovo X61 and the have different wireless cards.

In the NWPC the Wireless Connection Properties has AEGIS Protocol and WLAN unchecked. These are checked in the WPC though this may be due to them being different wireless adaptors. I tried checking then in the NWPC but it made no difference.

Two unusual things.
When I power up the NWPC I get the message at the bottom right of screen where the wireless icon is that
there ARE Wireless Networks in range of my PC but when I click the icon it say there are no networks in range. Also when I tried to reload my ISP router sw it does pick up a sees the address of the router but as I go through this process I'm unable to connect. So these two points suggest that the PC does in same way see the Wireless Network but when I try to view them via NW Connections there is no evidence of them.

Thanks again for you help.

Peter

Well...What I would do is go to the network settings on the non communicating laptop and delete that connection. You should be able to right clik the icon and delete it. Turn of the laptop and turn it back on. Does it find a new device, as in the wireless connection? If it asks re install the driver automatically you may have to do it manually INSTEAD. You should have an install disk that came with the laptop, or there is a folder on the harddrive with drivers specific to your laptops mainbord on board devices. If not you'll have to go to the mfgs. website and download the appropriate driver, using the working laptop. Then transfer that driver to the non working laptop  using a USB flashdrive.

JimJim,
I'm afraid when I right click I'm not allowed to delete the icon. Even when I press the delete key it attempts to delete, asks me if I'm sure I want to delete the Wireless Connection, but then I get the message: "The connection you selected cannot be deleted"

Solve : WNR2000 router and recording the bandwith traffic?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a query that I was hoping could be answered by someone on here.

Basically, I have 3 hope computers that are used by may family (two connected via wire and one via wi-fi). I also have 5 students that share our house (these are not paying students, as we PUT them up until they can find their footings).

The problem I have is that over the course of the month we have a very large amount of traffic. Our IPS has allowed US a 40GB per month free and anything over this is to be paid for. The issue rises where I have a nice bill coming in now and everyone is saying it is not them doing downloads.
Last month 27GB over the 40GB
This month 57GB over the 40GB

I advised the students that any streaming via whatever website also adds to this, but everyone is saying they are not doing this.

I want to have my router record the bandwith traffic from each MAC or IP on the home network, and wondered if this was possible?

If not, how can I best record this, so I can see what is taking up all this traffic?

Kindest regards

Solve : Using the dgl-4500 in bridge mode?

Answer»

I just bought the dir-855 and want to use my dgl-4500 to extend the range of the 5ghz band.  I read that using firefox if you go to view and change it from basic to no then log into the 4500's page under basic network you can now see wan port with 2 options router mode and bridge mode but as soon as i change it and save it all the settings go from what they are to o.o.o.o and i get an error message.

Anyone know how to get the 4500 WORKING in bridge mode?   THANKS.    The reason i want to extend the 5ghz band is because it's set to wifi n only and the 2.4ghz is set to mixed wifi n and G.

Would you RECOMMEND extending the 2.4ghz over the 5 because not everything uses 5 but 2.4 and some things still use g but most use n.

Solve : Laptop with mobile broadband and wifi?

Answer»

Hi,

I have had an IBM T42 used laptop for a year and always connected to my home wireless Belkin G router without problem, as well as wifi hotspots. I am running XP.

Recently, I purchased a VIRGIN Mobile USB modem for broadband. It installed and worked fine but when I uninstalled it and tried to go back to my own wireless network, I could not connect. The screen kept saying acquiring network address but was not able.

I just tried plugging into the router with a cable and it worked, but suddenly the wireless connected too. Now it is on the INTERNET without a cable. Can anyone guess what happened?

Oh btw, I have one yellow question mark in my device manager for an intel LPC controller. Is this related?Welcome to the forum.

Solve : No Wi-fi connectivity in KDE!!!?

Hi, I recently installed the KDE DESKTOP environment just to check out on my Dell Inspiron E1705 notebook, but for some reason it WILL NOT connect to the internet in KDE, but Wifi works perfectly using the GNOME interface. I run Ubuntu 10.10 dual-booted with WINDOWS 7 Professional 32-bit on a Dell Inspiron 17" laptop computer. The only thing I can think of is that it might just be a MISSING driver for the wireless because I had the same exact thing happen to me when I installed ubuntu on my system and I wasn't able to connect using GNOME. All help is greatly appreciated. Thanx

Solve : Which wireless dongle??

Answer»

My old dongle Netgear wg111t is not compatible with win 7 64- bit, I have used a work round on it and it now connects but has very POOR signal strength and very unstable down speed.
I have decided a new dongle would be the best option but am confused by which one.

My router is a Netgear 834gt 802.11g 108mbps, router shows downstream connection speed is 11300 kbps.
Two machines share this router mainly just surfing with some downloading.
On a speed test my p.c shows between 500-2094 kbps and my laptop shows 9890 kbps

My questions are.
Will an 802.11n 150mbps dongle connect o.k. with my router?
Is there any advantage using an 11n as opposed to an 11 g with my router?
Thanks
It should work fine with your router. This explains the differences of 802.11n and 802.11g and the speed differences, etc

No there will be no real advantage to using it with your router.

Basically N (5 ghz) has a farther effective range, higher maximum transfer rate than G and operates on a different frequency than G (2.4 ghz)I believe the 108 mbps 802.11g is a non-standard, proprietary implementation; you would need a wireless-g device that is of the same brand and (approx the same age) to use it.I understand what you are saying perhaps sky should find a manufacturer that will support its own hardware, or at least exert some pressure on Netgear to sort it out.

Anyway back to my other question which dongle will work with win 7 64-bit?

My router is Netgear db834gt 108 mbps 802.11g which I have been told brings problems of its own as to a suitable dongle, I know little about this subject so any comments would be appreciated.
Hi.
I decided to try a new dongle realtrek 802 11n/g and although my signal strength has greatly improved (5 bars, was 2) my down speed has dropped to 400kbps.

My laptop is showing 8.8mbps sitting next to my P.C, I have TRIED updating all drivers on the P.C but still no good.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi.
I still need some help.
This is really strange I decided to try my new dongle on the laptop and it works as it should 10mbps down speed.

Plug it back into the P.C 400kbps both machines are running win7 64 bit and both are using the same a.v, all drivers have been updated and they are side by side.

I have now RUN out of ideas, so someone make a suggestion even if it a stupid one, I will try anything.
You should not have two wireless devices next to each other.
They don't play well together. Thanks for the thoughts; I am thinking this is a configuration problem on my P.C.

This is a wifi dongle, plugged into my laptop it gives a down speed of just under 10mbps then I plug the same dongle into my P.C it only gives 400kbps.

Both machines are side by side (for test purposes) and running win 7, the laptop is home edition and P.C is ultimate and both use the same a/v.

So I would think that the speed is O.K up to the dongle in either machine then for some reason the P.C loses down speed due to a configuration problem, but where to look has me stumped.

If anyone can think of a configuration SCENARIO that would strangle my down speed I would be grateful.

Quick update, bought another dongle problem solved, back to 10mbps.

Solve : Odd MS problem.?

Answer»

Ok so this setup has been working fine up until now.

I've got a modem, connected to a ROUTER which is gives my household WIRELESS but also connects my computer through a cable. As I said, up until now this has been working flawlessly but recently I've noticed a SLIGHT lag in my surfing. Tried it on a Swedish broadband-site and it says I've got 512 ms. Also tried it on my mum's computer which is wirelessly connected and it gives her 10ms.

Any ideas what might cause this?

Modem: Netgear ADSL2+Modem DM111P
Router: 3Com OfficeConnect  Wireless 108Mps 11g Cable/DSL Router

Running windows 7 Ultimate

Sincerely, PhallanHave you tried testing the internet connection speed at different time(s)? The slight lagging may be cause by more people or subscribers on your ISP USING the net. You could also clean your temp files or use Ccleaner(use default settings) and check for any probable spyware or malware infection by using Malwarebytes and Superantispyware(update definitions first) and perform a complete scan.

Solve : Router problems.?

Answer»

My internet has been on the decline for a while now.  I've been fighting with my ISP here lately because they think it's my problem and I think it's their problem, but I wonder about my router.

It's a Linksys wrt54g version 6 router.  I like to play online games every now and again and I DISCONNECT all the time now and I never had that problem.  Not only that, I notice my little computer in my task-bar loses it's globe and gets that RED X and then it re-connects.  Well that's annoying cause I also do college online and you can imagine trying to take a quiz online with internet dropping out.

So question is: what is wrong with my internet?  It wasn't like this before.

I updated my router to the LATEST firmware, hoping that would mend the problem, but nothing.  It worked good for all of 10 minutes and went back to bad internet.

BTW my ISP (ELC Internet (local crap)) is a jackbutt and if I try to call them too many times because of the internet going out, they'll just start hanging up on me.  Real PROFESSIONAL... and my aunt next door is having disconnecting problems too at times.

What happens if you connect DIRECTLY the the modem with out the router? Quote

Solve : New here, wireless capability not detected.?

Answer»

My mom has a Dell Inspiron 1564.

She's running windows 7, and connected through a home wireless connection that runs three other computers (1 laptop, two desktops) not including a cell phone, ps3, and wii all that connect and browse the internet currently.

All of a sudden, her laptop wont connect to the internet.  All other devices connected to her motorola router work fine.

The way you turn on/off your wireless connectivity is through FN and F2 together.  So i figured it was that, tried it with no luck.  I've tried troubleshooting through NETWORK, and even through yahoo messenger (Which gives the 'youre firewall may be blocking, your capability is tuned off, dns has an issue, etc results).  I've trned her firewall completely off to try with no luck, replaced and tried toggling wireless a few times with no luck.

The only thing i can think of is she must have a virus (I think BACK to the nightmarish "Antivirus 2009/2010").  I remember installing/having her install Ccleaner a while ago on her laptop, i dont see it anywhere now in a search or otherwise.  I do see that now she has McAfee and she's never used it/wanted it (etc) so im wondering if its a mcafee virus?

Nothing else seems to be an issue.  Her files are all still there, no weird sounds/colors/etc.  I hope ive been detailed enough, and im really hoping someone can help!

Thank you for your time.Have you tried connecting with a wired connection to the router to see if the internet/network capability works at all?
Also, I would check some of the network settings. Start Menu -> Control Panel -> View Network Status and Tasks (in the very top section). Then in the left-hand pane, click on 'Change Adapter Settings' Right-click on 'Wireless Network Connection'. If there is an 'Enable' option, try clicking it, and then try connecting again. If not, go down to 'Properties', and scroll to the 'Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)', click on it (but leave the check mark there) and click the 'Properties' button. Check that it's set for 'Obtain an IP Address Automatically'.hi there
First of all, try to get connection through the ethernet cable connected directly to the laptop and check if you can surf,
If u already diable and enable the wireless connection, and nothing HAPPEN,
try to do this, click on start,on the search programs and files, type cmd and it will appear a black screen, on the blinking little bar type ipconfig, check on IP ADDRESS OR IPV4 ADDRESS ,the first 3 NUMBERS that must appear are 192 if u have something different like 169, there is a nics card problemIs the wirless icon illuminated on the deck of the computer? Looks like this  ((0)).
On some laptops, there is a pushbutton to turn off wireless networks for secure offline work.Allot of routers have a place to allow access only if the MAC address is listed (same with some modems).  If this was TURNED on and the computer is not listed.

Have you tried (like other suggested) connecting directly to the modem and router via cable?  Check the IP Address to make sure that it is not being used by another system.

Solve : printer sharing error code?

Answer»

error code 0x000006d9

I'm getting this when I double CLICK on the printer and go into properties/ sharing/share this printer.

As I'm understanding this is what I need to do in order to share the printer over the network.

Asus DESKTOP essentio. windows 7, 64 bit, 6g ram Pentium duocore

Not sure where to go from here.Is this a printer that can be shared? Does the maker indicate it can be shared?  the site www.sevenforums.com reports issues with  network printers and windows 7 64 bit. Maybe you problem is like that.
Go there and look for posts that are similar to yours. The issue is when trying to share a printer between a 32 bit system and a 64 bit system.

Yes, in some CONFIGURATION it makes no difference at all. But sometimes it does.
It was shared on my last system, but that was likely 32 bit, I'm not sure. But I get this code b4 I ever try to use it from another computer. Shouldn't I be able to at least turn on the option?

I'll try your link. From the Mothership...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2123653Well, that's not working either. When I try to CHANGE firewall settings I get another error code. I'm TIRED right now, I'll look into it tomorrow. This is really frustrating.
Every time I get an error code I do a search and try to fix it only to come up against another error code.

Solve : Would a new N router give me more download speed??

Problem: Stuttering Youtube streaming
Dsl download speed: 3 Mbps (wired or wireless)
Wireless router: D-Link G (5 year old)
COMPUTERS: newest laptop has draft N, older one has G
Question: Can I benefit from a new N router?
My ISP says my package PROVIDES 5Mbps. If the G router has a capacity of 54 Mbps, does that mean an N router is not going to give me any more speed?
Appreciate any INPUT. Quote

802.11n
The newest IEEE standard in the Wi-Fi category is 802.11n. It was designed to improve on 802.11g in the amount of bandwidth supported by utilizing multiple wireless signals and antennas (CALLED MIMO technology) instead of one.
When this standard is finalized, 802.11n connections should support data rates of over 100 Mbps. 802.11n also offers somewhat better range over earlier Wi-Fi standards due to its increased signal intensity. 802.11n equipment will be backward compatible with 802.11g gear.

•Pros of 802.11n - fastest maximum speed and best signal range; more resistant to signal interference from outside sources
•Cons of 802.11n - standard is not yet finalized; costs more than 802.11g; the use of multiple signals may greatly interfere with nearby 802.11b/g based networks.

Problem: Stuttering Youtube streaming
This could lead to another issue and not always or somehow with internet speed connection.
 The simple answer is no.
Your download speed is capped by your ISP.
5Mbps is the max you can get, no matter what the router maximum speed is.

N router may give you a tad better wireless download speed, which is always less, than a wired connection  speed and N router gives you better range than G router. Quote from: Broni on February 06, 2011, 10:37:23 PM

I agree with him. It is not always faster.

One thing you can do to make YouTube faster is where it says 360p, change it to 240p and it should be faster.Any broadband connection with a speed of 1Mbps, or more should play streaming video just fine.
If it doesn't, there may be some other factors, like poor computer specs, browser add-ons, etc.Broni,
My computers are all low end ones. Even the newest one is only Acer with AMD Athlon TF-20(1.6 GHz), 3GB ram.
I am not famililar with browser add-ons.  So nothing I could do except buying a better computer? What browser do you use?Internet explorer 8.Close IE.
GO Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons). Same problem?

When I run IE without add-ons the video won't start, asking me to download flash player update. When I try to download, it won't go further.Wasn't thinking....flash plugin is most likely disabled.

Solve : Hughesnet and Linksys connectivity?

Answer»

I have the Hughesnet modem HN9000 and am trying to connect it up with a Linksys wireless router ( I believe it is a WRT54GS ).  I have followed the common directions of turning off the DHCP of the router and resetting the local IP address to 192.168.0.254.  After completing that process, I connect the cable from the Hughesnet modem to #1 on the Linksys router.  I connect a computer to #2 of the Linksys router and bingo, it works.  The wireless is set up and listening.  As soon as I make another connection, either wireless or by plugging into #3 or #4, the power light flashes and the wireless drops!

Can someone please help me out as to what I am missing.....

Thanks.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]On the back of the Linksys router there should be a slot marked Internet put the cable coming from the Hughesnet modem HN9000 there.

Since you have made changes to the Linksys router will need to access the routers configuration screen and go to the section where it can be reset to factory default.  (Best to start from a fresh configuration than try this then that ect...)

Activate the wireless if you will be using then try a connection.

But I have never before heard of setting the router to an address  with 254 on a LAN.

As you already know, if two devices on the LAN have the same IP at the same time, you will have a conflict. So each device must have its own assignment.

On my LAN I set my two slave routers, switches, to a lower address in the accessible range of the gateway router. (Which is usually from 2 to 51 for personal consumer grade routers. Imagine a home network with 50 PCs!)

On my system 192.168.1.1 is the default gateway, DNS and DHCP. The modem is at 192.168.1.254 and can not be changed.

The two other routers are at
192.168.1.10
and
192.168.1.20
Which I had to set manual, directly. After you CHANGE the IP of a box you can not get to it unless you use the new IP you just assigned.

The 192.168.1.1 is the address most often used by the MAIN router. But 192.168.1.254 is often the modem address when you have a separate modem.

I would not go against want the guys at Cisco say. But you could try and see if that makes any difference.

If I nan wrong, which I often am, please tell me.May need to clone your MAC address to your router.

Yes, that works.

Crisco has a program that will do most of the configuration for you. It uses MAC address to sort things out. It has a free trail. You do not have to buy it. Just try it to see if it helps.

Solve : I wish I could connect to wifi with my Toshiba Satellite Laptop A40 S161?

Answer»

I used to be able to connect to the wireless network at the library from my laptop, but now I can't (Snnnnfff).

At home I can see a good local area connection on my laptop, but I can't access that-it asks for a certificate (motorola 23B1C), but I don't UNDERSTAND what that is about.

I'm not comp literate. And the more I rely on self help- I FEAR that I am making things worse myself.

I have a Satellite Toshiba A40 S161 which is using Windows 2003.  It has a CPU 2.59 GHz with 752MB of RAM.

Is there anything you could do to assist me?

Via Remote Connection would be of preferable CHOICE- or send something to download.

It's a used laptop and I don't have a CD.  Nor the money to get it fixed!

When I start my computer, I get a message :"At least one service or driver failed during start up, AND,  another message a that read " HTTPS or TCP Connection could not be made."

Solve : Intermittent internet connection?

Answer»

Hello,
Sorry for total lack of computer jargon- I'm unsure about much of this so I will describe as best as i can.

My connection drops, from occasionally to several times an hour, for about 1 minute and then reconnects.

using the same computer and connection, this did not happen before a few weeks ago. I can not trace this to any significant change or new software from that time.

I am on a laptop, windows vista, connected to internet directly-no ROUTER, avast antivirus.
Connection runs from computer, to dish on the house. TOWER is 2 lots over, so i doubt it has to do with distance/signal.
the 'network center' informs me that i am still connected to the network but the network is not connected to the internet.
not a timeout issue- it frequently occurs as i am active.
i don't think it is being blocked by AV- i have tried disabling it and going to a 'safe' web site but the disconnection still occurred.

ISP tech support has been unable to help (not UNWILLING but unable, they have tried to be very helpful)- they have told me that the network is not experiencing outages, and they can detect signal strength via the radio and it shows no problem. i described the network center display/diagnosis and they said that it is not very dependable.  they even came out to the house and CHECKED it out- they replaced/tested my connecting cable, but like getting the kid to cough at the dr's office, no outages while they were here.i have an open issue with them for a few weeks now and will update this thread with anything they tell me.

what is happening? can i fix it? if not, is there something that i can do to better inform the ISP tech GUYS?

Thank you for any help you can provide. Quote

You must test the distance to signal connection if this is really not the problem to confirm any interference and check your Security settings. two lots is pretty far for a wifi connection. generally 20-50 feet is about where you'd start getting rather bad signals. When you say you have a dish on the house and the tower is two lots over, is this a community or commercial wireless internet service? Thanks for your responses. The dish is for a commercial wireless internet service. I obviously couldn't tell you how it works; when installed they referred to the dish as radio. The tower serves several miles in any direction; I am the closest customer to it. I don't know the difference between this and wifi, but when i connect wifi, (not available at my home) i use a separate area of the connection center. The one I need help with is referred to as a local area network.Actually, you left out one device when you described how you were connected.  There must be a radio transceiver (combination transmitter and receiver) connected to the dish, then to your computer.  The internet service transmits on one frequency to you and your transceiver and dish transmit back to the tower on another frequency.

You say it has been a problem for a couple of weeks, how long before that did it work OK?

My first guess is that you have a bad transceiver, and my second guess is that you are so close to the transmitter that you have too much signal strength which is overloading the receiver.  A simple in-line pad can fix it if that is the problem.  Your ISP should have them. Thanks for explaining the dish set-up. It worked properly for about 8 months.

The ISP apparently agrees with you; their next step is for a guy to come and check/repair/replace the radio.

Solve : Home network printing?

Answer»

When using our HOME network printer and when printing a WORD document with clip art via the network the clip art does not print. But when printing the same document from the computer CONNECTED directly to the printer it works FINE. Is there someway to remedy this so that it will print the clip art via the network? Check your firewall settings. If the picture can be printed directly, problem should be in the firewall. Thanks for the suggestion, but even with the firewall turned off, it still does not print. Any other suggestions?Do you have the same version of Word on both computer?  What version is it?  If you copy a clip art from Word to Paint, can you print it from Paint? The OP has the IMAGE as a link in the document.

Solve : Strange Connection Problems. Please help?

Answer»

Hello. For the last couple of months I have been having a problem connecting to the internet. When I start up in the morning, my computer shows no internet connection. I have another computer right next to it that connects every DAY no problem. So that rules out the router and modem. The strange thing about this is that it does EVENTUALLY end up working, I just have to restart my PC over and over and over. About 5-7 times usually does the trick. This is most frustrating problem ever!! I have searched everywhere online for a solution to this. Please if anyone even has a suggestion, I would really appreciate it! I am pulling all my hair out and soon I will be bald. lol. Here is the info on my computer.

OS : Windows 7 Ultimate Version 6.1.7600 Build 7600
Gateway computer model GT5694
64-bit OS
Processor: AMD PHENOM 9100e QUAD Core 1.80 GHz
4 GB RAM

[recovering disk space - OLD attachment deleted by admin]If you have a spare Network Adapter kicking around, I'd install a different NIC and connect with that and see if the problem goes away. I had a similar problem with a motherboard that had nVidia chipset and nVidia NIC that was having all sorts of issues. I installed a 3Com 100 mbps NIC and problem went away.Did you have to restart your computer over and over and then eventually it would work?

Just to add more detail to what I said earlier. When it does connect, it works great. It doesn't go off in the middle of the day or anything. It stays connected until I turn it off and then the next morning the problem starts all over again.Instead of restarting the pc, did you try renewing the connection?

Start
run
type ipconfig /renew

No I haven't tried that. Thanks so much for the suggestion. I am glad SOMEONE finally replied to me. lol
