Solve : Wireless Connections drops every once in a while? |
|
Answer» I have upto two computers hooked up wirelessly to a router. The router is a belkin G router. My setup is like this: One computer is upstairs in a separate room from where the router is. It is a desktop that has a belkin wireless adapter. The other computer is a laptop that is downstairs that has an internal wifi card. Problem is that randomly the wireless connection gets DROPPED. The way I connect again is to unplug the modem and the router, and reconnect after 10 seconds. I havent noticed this happening on the upstairs computer. So I THOUGHT that maybe the walls of the house or the different levels (upstairs vs downstairs) were what was affecting connectivity, but if it was, wouldnt it prevent the downstairs laptop from connecting in the first place? |

Solve : kicked off internet frequently - what's wrong? |
|
Answer» Hello - I just upgraded my Verizon "aircard" to the 4G so it would be compatible with my old computer and the new computer I also bought. Both are laptops. Ever SINCE I did this last week I constantly lose my internet connection. It boots me off on a very irregular basis but HAPPENS all day long. This happens on the new computer AND the old computer. Verizon SENT me a new aircard YESTERDAY but it's still happening. I'm going crazy. What could possibly be wrong? Especially since it's working on both laptops. THANKS for any assistance. |

Solve : Cannot use WiFi? |
|
Answer» At home I use a direct wired Ethernet connection and elsewhere WiFi to a local hub. The computer must have a receiver-transmitter modem that connects it to hubs which doesn’t seem to be woorking. In the past I clicked ‘Wireless Network Connection’ and got the list of local hubs. Now clicking ‘Wireless Network Connection’ I GET a box titled Wireless Network Connection displaying, “Enabling…” and then quickly displays, “Connection failed!” and then disappears. |

Solve : Laptop disconnecting from Netgear? |
|
Answer» Hello, I have an M11x r2 netbook and it is having problems connecting to my WIRELESS internet. When it does connect to the internet it goes about 5.5mbps or I have limited to no connectivity to the internet. The few times I have had at 100mbps did not last more for more than six hours. The ROUTER and modem are located in my roommates room and he can connect rather easily on his Macbook however when his laptop goes to sleep he will get disconnected and sometimes he gets the same issues as me. I am able to connect to my neighbors guest belkin services as well as my schools wifi. OH, and I forgot to mention the connection is excellent I just can't connect to internet or to the router. I updated the software for my Netgear and that seemed to solve the problem but once again I can not connect. |

Solve : Wireless Speed Always 54 Mbps Regardless of Signal Strength? |
|
Answer» Hi, guys! So, I'm wondering if Windows has a registry setting or something of the kind that prevents a wireless card from dropping to a lower speed if the signal strength goes downAFAIK, None or not True. 54 Mbps for a wireless signal is a max or set depending on your Network card support plus your ISP shared(other computer) connection speed. 1 Mbps= 1024 kbps Hi, jason2074! I'm really at a loss as to why it behaves this way. As I say, I have another laptop with win7 and if I plug the wireless dongle, its behavior is normal, i.e. the speed fluctuates with changing signal strength. Both computers have the same driver for the dongle, so I really don't know why this is so.You are not the firsts to notice that the signal strength indicator is not always a reliable indicator of signal quality. At low signal level it should drop down the link speed. But it does not always work that way. This has been a popular topic on some forums. Here is just one. Wireless Internet forum: Signal strength variation BTW, this is a behavior also with many cell phones. The signal bars only give a proximate indication of signal quality. Hi, Geek-9pm! Yes, I know it is very approximate. But as I said the link is dropping packets and the percentage of dropped packets correlates well (inversely) with the indicated signal strength. The behavior of my wireless dongle is different in that respect depending on the laptop I hook it to. My opinion is it is a windows 7/driver issue. But where exactly this issue is I'm unable to find out. |

Solve : Huge speed disparity between wireless and wired connection? |
|
Answer» I guess this is likely to be a repeat topic but I checked back to October and didn't see anything to help me... I tended to get close to the full 10MbHave you check the wireless network card supported speed? Try looking into your device manager for your wireless card and right-click and choose Properties->Advanced tab and look for a setting speed and duplex, link...Look up at the right for its Value. If its in Auto, try changing it to 10 Mbps or the supported speed connection of your network adapter, click OK. If specified value is full/half, change other value and try rebooting and check the difference. You'll need to upgrade your wireless network from wireless G to wireless N. You need a main wireless N router and the client's wireless adapters should support wireless N. N supports speeds up to 300 mbps. G is only up to 54 mbps. I think that's your problem. 8 bits per byte + overhead + connection strength shows why you're getting slower speeds. Quote from: jason2074 on January 29, 2011, 09:08:02 PM Have you check the wireless network card supported speed? If its in Auto, try changing it to 10 Mbps or the supported speed connection of your network adapter, click ok. If specified value is full/half, change other value and try rebooting and check the difference. It was set to Auto so I tried both half and full duplex on 100Mbps as we're supposedly on a 50Mb line, but there was no change in the speed we received... Quote from: TechGeek on January 29, 2011, 09:09:55 PM You'll need to upgrade your wireless network from wireless G to wireless N. You need a main wireless N router and the client's wireless adapters should support wireless N. Would that do anything to explain the the drop in speed since the upgrade. I used to download from newsgroups at a rate of 1,200KBps, which from my limited knowledge is the full speed of 10Mb broadband. Since the upgrade on the same router and laptop it's SLOWED to around 500KBps, which is about 4Mb broadband? How do I find out if my laptop's adapter supports Wireless N? Am I eventually going to need a wireless N router even if the slow down is a different problem? Just want to be 100% sure it's something I need before I spend money on it.http://wlanbook.com/which-is-faster-wireless-router-or-wired-internet/ Quote from: Poyples on January 30, 2011, 07:16:52 AM Would that do anything to explain the the drop in speed since the upgrade. Since the upgrade on the same router and laptop it's slowed to around 500KBps, which is about 4Mb broadband? You can safely ignore the "advice" regarding your "need" for wireless-N; first, their math is flawed; the speedtest.net speed you are being given is already in megabits per second, and last I checked the speed you are getting of 2.59mbps is nowhere near the Wireless-G speed of 54mbps, and I doubt it has anything to do with signal degradation, because I would hope that was the first thing you checked (if it is and you can't seem to get a good signal though, I'd suspect the "missing antenna" issue, I've seen it happen before). Aside from that, the router configuration could have been changed (or, if they replaced the router entirely, it may not have an optimal setup (it may be configured for wireless-a/b, which in may cases would have about the given speeds) All that said, clearly, as you've noted- the difference started when they replaced what I would imagine was your access point; either your wireless router, or something similar- either that, or they may have changed settings inadvertently or otherwise. It could even be something as conspicuous as one of the antennas or the antenna having been removed during installation and simply not replaced.Well it's the same router we had before and my signal is always the full 5 bars so I doubt it's an antenna being removed. What sort of settings are likely to have changed? I logged onto my router and on wireless settings it was set as 'b or g' so I changed it to g only and I'm still getting much slower speeds of about 6mbps at the moment. Not so simple ...but a solution.... for Window 7 Proffesional. 1) Open Network and Sharing Center 2)On left side- Change Adapter Settings 3) Right Click Local Area Connection 4)Go to Proerties 5) Hit Configure 6) Select Advanced Tab 7)Go down to Link Speed & Duplex 8)In pull down Set To: Auto Negotiation This should fix Ethernet speed issue ... It did not set as a default on my Laptop Mfg working on fix.. Annoying be will temp fix problem... may have to repeat all the time AHS Quote from: asles on February 04, 2011, 04:24:14 PM ...See Reply #4: "...It was set to Auto so I tried both half and full duplex on 100Mbps as we're supposedly on a 50Mb line, but there was no change in the speed we received..."The Wireless adapter has a 802.11 networking STANDARD. Check the wireless card if it supports b/g/n or b/g only against the router mode settings/features. If its in mixed mode(b/g/n) set on router, follow the wireless card support(b/g) and set the router to b/g mode and check the difference. |

Solve : HDMI Connection and no picture???? |
|
Answer» Hi, I have got an ASUS D22 Media Centre pc and have recently TRIED to connect the system to my TV using the HDMI connector. I am unable to get a picture can anyone think of a reason why or is there anything else I need to do?? but I did read that some TV's cannot show the output from a computer, is this true? Not true... but how to get it to show the output depends on what TYPES of inputs the TVs have. Do they have HDMI inputs?Hi Deerpark, thanks for the reply. The input to the TV is one of two HDMI sources where the cable is plugged into, you then select the relevant HDMI input using the remote control and a picture should appear??That depends on how your computer is setup.. Do you have another screen connected to the computer? If you do you probably need to configure the computer to output a signal to both screens. How to do this depends on what graphics card you have in the machine. But if you can give us the name of it someone should be able to tell you have to do it. But yes if the TV is the only screen connected I believe the picture *should* appear automatically. Thanks again for the prompt reply. The TV will be the only screen connected to the system so I am at a BIT of a loss as to why there is no picture. Thanks for the INFO on the graphics card, I believe the make is an "NVidia nForce 7600GS Graphic Card" if anyone has any suggestions? Thanks Dom |

Solve : two routers boost signal?? |
|
Answer» I just got fios installed in my house. It comes with the wireless router...which is setup downstairs on the family pc. All my stuff...xbox, laptop, pc, psp, ps3 are all up stairs where the signal is weak. I have the OLD wireless router still. Can I set that up somehow so that I can get a better signal upstairs with all of my stuff? That depends greatly on how advanced the old router is. The router will have to support being configured as a wireless repeater. I honestly haven't seen a lot of consumer grade routers that supports this though. Unless you've got a 3com router like mine. The downside of repeating is that the wireless network speed is going to be reduced. Different routers provide different wireless connection speeds. i'm using 802.11 g, however, 802.11 b (i think), is often slower than 802.11 g.Yeah... but how is this related to the USER's problem? It's an alternative METHOD to boost signal. |

Solve : Setting Up Port Forwarding? |

Answer» I've been trying to set up PORT forwarding with my internet connection, but no matter what I try I can't get it to work. I've gone through all the INSTRUCTIONS at www.portforward.com for my specific router and DSL modem (D-Link LI-524, Westell 6100) and set up a static IP, however, every time I run a test of the port, it continually gives me an error that the port is not open. every time I run a test of the port, it continually gives me an error that the port is not open. What kind of test are you using? In addition to Broni's question, what program are you trying to open a port for and have you configured this program to use the port you have forwarded? The test I ran was the uTorrent Port Checker (http://www.utorrent.com/testport.php?port=#####). This test would continually give me an error reporting the port as not open, no matter what directions I followed to open the port. I am trying to configure the port for uTorrent, and I have configured the program to use the port.Hmm you say you have configure both the modem and the router? This means your modem is also functioning as a router and I think the port isn't being forwarded correctly because of the dual router setup. Coincidentally I found a GUIDE on how to configure your modem to work with another router. You may want to try this. http://www.lava.net/support/Westell_6100_DSL_Modem_Installation_Guide If you don't feel comfortable messing around with your modem I suggest you disable the routing capabilities of your router (it will basically work as a switch then). You should be able to do this by disabling the DHCP server on the router. |

There are some 3rd party programs, which will lock down Internet access, but I didn't find any free ones. Another option would be to create another account for your kid. I don't remember, how it was in XP, but in my Vista, I can right click on any program (like "iexplore.exe"), and set it up to be run as Administrator only. This way another profile user won't be able to start IE.I have alreay created a seperate account for my kid but problem is remain the same, lan connection is active even his account is not set as administrator Quote but problem is remain the same, lan connection is activeIf you disable his browser, how is he gonna go to the Net?Put a password on his account so that YOU have to be there when he wants to use the computer (Internet). Solve : Bad router? or something else?? |
|
Answer» Hello, I have the DMZ for my computer enabledYou realize, that it disables router, as a firewall, right? Then, I think, you have to start with your modem. Try to connect one of your computer, straight to a modem, and see, if same thing will happen.Yes, I know the DMZ makes my computer operate outside the firewall, that is the whole point. The modem itself won't lose connection like the router does, I've tried that. That is why it must be the router. It could be, but I assume, that before you run for a new router, you want to try to find some other solutions... - Did you update its firmware? - You MAY have some interference from some other wireless devices. In router setup, try some other channel (mine is set to channel 11) Alright, I'll try a different channel and see what happens, I have the update set to automatic every time i log into the router so it is up to date. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll repost if this problem persists.Fair enough Nope, changing the channel didn't work, I came back today and when I booted up my comp the internet was off and I had to reset the modem and router.Must be the router, then. Sorry, we tried Yep it sounds like a classic case of failing router. Just wondering...what is the make and model of your modem? Some of the newer modems come with a router built in and if you have this type they could be having trouble matching firewalls. My gut says its a bad router and that this is a long shot. It is an Ambit model #U10C018 cable modem, that is an interesting theory...so do you think I should try shutting off the router's firewall??That modem doesn't appear to have a built in firewall (or router for that matter) according to this page. But hey it doesn't hurt to try and disable the router's firewall. |

I have file sharing ENABLED, but when I try to view them under shared files, nothing is there. What am I doing wrong? Both PCs are running XP Pro SP2. So essentially you're trying to wirelessly access the 2nd PC via the Xbox...yeah?No, I'm able to access mp3s and pics through the xbox already as it is hard wired to the ROUTER. What I'm trying to do is access mp3s through the 2nd pc, which CONNECTS wirelessly. No, I'm able to access mp3s and pics through the xbox already as it is hard wired to the router. What I'm trying to do is access mp3s through the 2nd pc, which connects wirelessly. Right, I think I've got you. Wireless isn't so much a science as it is an art. Have you got the funds/space to get a repeater? This will pick up the wireless and re-broadcast it. Might HELP, as if it's a really weak connection that might be why you're experiencing these troubles, however it might have nothing to do with that. First things to check, are there wireless telephones about? Double check they're not interfering, also, no MICROWAVE ovens, or other h/d electrical items nearby or in between the two PCs is there? They can affect signal quality. What rating is your wireless? b, g, n(draft)? |

Answer» Alright well i have a laptop and a desktop, My goal is to get both of them connected to the internet. Since I recently had to terminate my ISP I currently use Wifi on my laptop to get internet from my nieghboors router. I have 2 NICs on my laptop(Wifi and Wired) I want to get connection from my Wifi NIC and share the connection through the wired NIC that is connected to my Linksys router. My linksys router will then be connected to the internet and i can get a connection with all my computers in my house. This is the first time I really messed with networking and ICS. Can someone give me a detailed guide on how to do it. Instead of messing around with ICS, why not hardwire the desktop to the router (I assume that is the way it is currently set up but you don't say) then connect wirelessly with the laptop (again ASSUMING it's a wireless router)? Both are then connected to the Internet THRU the router and no hassle with ICS. |
