Solve : Wireless Connections drops every once in a while?

Answer»

I have upto two computers hooked up wirelessly to a router. The router is a belkin G router. My setup is like this: One computer is upstairs in a separate room from where the router is. It is a desktop that has a belkin wireless adapter. The other computer is a laptop that is downstairs that has an internal wifi card. Problem is that randomly the wireless connection gets DROPPED. The way I connect again is to unplug the modem and the router, and reconnect after 10 seconds. I havent noticed this happening on the upstairs computer. So I THOUGHT that maybe the walls of the house or the different levels (upstairs vs downstairs) were what was affecting connectivity, but if it was, wouldnt it prevent the downstairs laptop from connecting in the first place?

I changed the channels that the router was broadcasting on, but the problem still persists. Im wondering, could the G rating on the router be causing this, that maybe a G router doesnt have a big enough range? Would using an N router work better? The distance from the upstairs router to the downstairs laptop is maybe 20 feet at the most so Im guessing a G router should work, but Im not sure. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you have good signal strength, there is not much you can do. All wireless routers of the current 802.11 standard for consumer use are subject to drop outs. Even expensive commercial units for business can not prevent lost connections.
What I am trying to tell use is that the hype about new N standards routers is just vendors hoping you will buy new equipment. Of course, there is the question of QUALITY. There is no prof that type N routers are better made that the earlier models.

I have a good connection here in my house. It took awhile to find the right mix of makes and models that worked well. All three of my routers in my home system are the type g and they are doing fine. Yet once in awhile a connection is lost.
One router is in another home inside of a closet. It also sends enough energy some through the wood walls and some 80 feet outdoes and into a motor home with metal siding. My nephew gets good enough connection that he downloads videos of the the INTERNET. This should be impossible. The 2.5 Ghz can not penetrate metal siding. So they tell me.
My three routers serve three households using one internet connection.

There is some great stuff coming soon, but with current market conditions the vendors are slow to bring in the new stuff. Part of the issue is also a matter of policy and economics.
My recommendation is to not buy a N router just because it says N. Actually, the N standard flies in the face of good design principles. Don't get me started on that.

Solve : kicked off internet frequently - what's wrong?

Answer»

Hello - I just upgraded my Verizon "aircard" to the 4G so it would be compatible with my old computer and the new computer I also bought. Both are laptops. Ever SINCE I did this last week I constantly lose my internet connection. It boots me off on a very irregular basis but HAPPENS all day long. This happens on the new computer AND the old computer. Verizon SENT me a new aircard YESTERDAY but it's still happening. I'm going crazy. What could possibly be wrong? Especially since it's working on both laptops. THANKS for any assistance.

Solve : Unable to install network card software.?

Answer»

My computer is running Windows XP Home edition. I installed a ENCORE ESL-835-TB networking card and put in the setup disk . When I run the setup disk it says
1. In the network group select the "Network Setup"->"Driver
2. insert the adapter driver disk in drive A and specify the path. A:\WFW311 for the location of the driver.
3. Close, and when PROMPTED, restart your computer so that changes TAKE affect.

In windows XP Home there is no Network
Group so how do I install the software. Anyone know? Thanks in advance. You're installing the WRONG driver. "WFW311" is Windows for Workgroups version 3.11

Solve : limited connectivity?

Answer»

Hi - I've looked all over this site for an answer but no luck. Tried a few things that vaguely seemed close to my problem with no luck. I am not good with pc troubleshooting so this is really frustrating.

I had a Toshiba Satellite that connected via a Belkin-N router with no problem throughout my house. I purchased a new Toshiba satellite, same router, and I can connect if I stay 10 feet from the router but if I move two feet I LOOSE the connection. I have another Toshiba satellite in use by another user who has no problems with his new pc connecting anywhere in the house.

Appreciate any suggestions or help.

Solve : Laptop cannot connect to internet?

Answer»

Sony Vaio Laptop (model number VPCF136FX) will not connect to INTERNET. There does not appear to be any driver issues. I can see the wireless networks, but cannot connect to them. Thanks. Is this a NEW problem?
Run the Wireless wizard again. Please report any errors or messages that indicate why it does not connect. Thanks for the reply. When I go to trouble shoot the internet problem, I get a message telling me the Diagnostic Policy Services is not running. When I try to start it, I get another message telling me I cannot start the service: Error 5: Access is denied. Where are you trying to connect (home, motel, ...)? The CONNECTION you are triing to make may require a PASS code to access. If at home can you connect via CABLE and utilize the internet?

Is the wireless turned on both for the transmitting and the laptop (ran accross this several times where one or the other is not).

Solve : Cannot use WiFi?

Answer»

At home I use a direct wired Ethernet connection and elsewhere WiFi to a local hub. The computer must have a receiver-transmitter modem that connects it to hubs which doesn’t seem to be woorking. In the past I clicked ‘Wireless Network Connection’ and got the list of local hubs. Now clicking ‘Wireless Network Connection’ I GET a box titled Wireless Network Connection displaying, “Enabling…” and then quickly displays, “Connection failed!” and then disappears.
I used to have a controller on my start list that let me enable/disable WiFi but it was accidentally deleted.
I tried System Restore, but for all dates it only stated “Your Computer cannot be restored to the [date given] System Checkpoint” –or –if not a System Checkpoint, then no explanation.
On clicking Dec 20 in System Restore these notes appeared:
8:36 pm Removed Digital Line Detect
8:34 pm Removed Get High Speed Internet
   4:42 am Remove EducateU
4:39 am Configured Broadband Management Programs 2
It’s possible that on Dec 20 I ran a copy of Regwork and picked up some kind if virus – but that’s just a guess.
If you're on Windows XP, go to Start > Connect To > Show All Connections.

See if your wireless ADAPTER is disabled. If it is, try right clicking it and enabling it. (Although it seems that it's disabled and has a problem enabling)Thanks for the 'Right Click' suggestion to try to enable, but unfortunately it doesn't work. Got the same BOXES as described above. Could the modem be damaged?check for wi-fi driver (Un-Install-restart lap-Install) or wi-fi card has to replace..you have yo contact to Service centre of manufacturer..I hope it works...ridhwanridwhan, thanks for the suggestion, but I don't understand what I should un-install and then install after restart. Also, I don't know where to look for the WiFi driver. EvAre you on Win 7? Solve : Laptop disconnecting from Netgear?

Answer»

Hello, I have an M11x r2 netbook and it is having problems connecting to my WIRELESS internet. When it does connect to the internet it goes about 5.5mbps or I have limited to no connectivity to the internet. The few times I have had at 100mbps did not last more for more than six hours. The ROUTER and modem are located in my roommates room and he can connect rather easily on his Macbook however when his laptop goes to sleep he will get disconnected and sometimes he gets the same issues as me. I am able to connect to my neighbors guest belkin services as well as my schools wifi. OH, and I forgot to mention the connection is excellent I just can't connect to internet or to the router. I updated the software for my Netgear and that seemed to solve the problem but once again I can not connect.

My netbook is an Alienware M11x r2 as stated above with
MS Windows 7 HOME Premium 64-bit
Intel Core i5 520UM 1.07GHz Arrandale 32nm Technology
4.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 399MHz (6-6-6-15)
Generic PnP Monitor ([email protected]) NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M Intel(R) HD Graphics
313GB Hitachi Hitachi HTS725032A9A364 (SATA)
and my wireless card is: DW 1520 Wireless-N WLAN Half-Mini Card

My ISP is Cox Communications

Solve : Wireless Speed Always 54 Mbps Regardless of Signal Strength?

Answer»

Hi, guys!
I have a problem with my wireless connection which always stays at 54 Mbps even though signal STRENGTH drops to a low value. There are many lost packets, and sometimes it just disconnects altogether without first dropping to 1 Mbps.
I have an Asus G73JH laptop with an Atheros AR9285 wireless network adapter plus a wireless DONGLE (Sagem XG-760A) which behaves in exactly the same way.
What is strange is that before I bought the Asus laptop, I had another laptop with an Intel 3945ABG wireless card plus the same wireless dongle, and their speed was not FIXED at 54 Mbps with changing signal strength.
Both laptops have had clean Windows 7 Ultimate x64 installs and both were used with the same wireless access POINT at the same place.
So, I'm WONDERING if Windows has a registry setting or something of the kind that prevents a wireless card from dropping to a lower speed if the signal strength goes down. Anyway, it doesn't seem to be a driver problem since both Atheros and Sagem devices have the same behavior. It's probably not an access point problem either, since I can replicate the same behavior with several wireless routers.
Does anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks. Quote

So, I'm wondering if Windows has a registry setting or something of the kind that prevents a wireless card from dropping to a lower speed if the signal strength goes down
AFAIK, None or not True. 54 Mbps for a wireless signal is a max or set depending on your Network card support plus your ISP shared(other computer) connection speed. 1 Mbps= 1024 kbps Hi, jason2074!
I'm really at a loss as to why it behaves this way. As I say, I have another laptop with win7 and if I plug the wireless dongle, its behavior is normal, i.e. the speed fluctuates with changing signal strength. Both computers have the same driver for the dongle, so I really don't know why this is so.You are not the firsts to notice that the signal strength indicator is not always a reliable indicator of signal quality. At low signal level it should drop down the link speed. But it does not always work that way.
This has been a popular topic on some forums. Here is just one.
Wireless Internet forum: Signal strength variation
BTW, this is a behavior also with many cell phones. The signal bars only give a proximate indication of signal quality.
Hi, Geek-9pm!
Yes, I know it is very approximate. But as I said the link is dropping packets and the percentage of dropped packets correlates well (inversely) with the indicated signal strength. The behavior of my wireless dongle is different in that respect depending on the laptop I hook it to. My opinion is it is a windows 7/driver issue. But where exactly this issue is I'm unable to find out.

Solve : Xerox CP205 network printer?

Answer»

We recently BOUGHT CP205 and we tried to use it as a network printer by KEYING in the IP address and using the networking CABLE, that our server vendor provides.

We operate large MRI and CT medical equipment that use to link up with a Xerox Phaser 8500 (which broke down), unfortunately we are unable to get the CP205 to work. (Using a new IP address and we 'ping' them)

The IP address was keyed into the printer, the medical machines DO detect it. But when we sent images for printing, the medical machines says 'Printed', but the CP205 did not even move.

Using a Laptop (windows Vista) and the USB wire, we manage to get it printing.

The operator's CD Rom did nothing MUCH to help and Xerox was not very informative as well.

Any help we can get here? Thanks.

Solve : Huge speed disparity between wireless and wired connection?

Answer»

I guess this is likely to be a repeat topic but I checked back to October and didn't see anything to help me...

We've just upgraded our internet to 50Mb thanks to a nice deal we GOT and they had to come out and install a new modem as the old one didn't support the higher SPEED. Since then I've got a huge difference between the wireless speed I'm getting compared to the wired connection.

The first one is my desktop PC, the second one is my laptop. The set up is pretty simple, just a router going into the modem, a cable from the router to the desktop, then the laptop connecting wirelessly. I'm actually getting slower speeds on the wireless than I got before we upgraded the internet as before I tended to get close to the full 10Mb.

The laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ61-401sa.
The router is Netgear WGR614 v6

Is what I get when I plug the laptop in to the router with a cable like I used for the desktop in the original test. Quote

I tended to get close to the full 10Mb
Have you check the wireless network card supported speed? Try looking into your device manager for your wireless card and right-click and choose Properties->Advanced tab and look for a setting speed and duplex, link...Look up at the right for its Value. If its in Auto, try changing it to 10 Mbps or the supported speed connection of your network adapter, click OK. If specified value is full/half, change other value and try rebooting and check the difference. You'll need to upgrade your wireless network from wireless G to wireless N. You need a main wireless N router and the client's wireless adapters should support wireless N.

N supports speeds up to 300 mbps. G is only up to 54 mbps. I think that's your problem. 8 bits per byte + overhead + connection strength shows why you're getting slower speeds. Quote from: jason2074 on January 29, 2011, 09:08:02 PM

Would that do anything to explain the the drop in speed since the upgrade. I used to download from newsgroups at a rate of 1,200KBps, which from my limited knowledge is the full speed of 10Mb broadband. Since the upgrade on the same router and laptop it's SLOWED to around 500KBps, which is about 4Mb broadband?

How do I find out if my laptop's adapter supports Wireless N? Am I eventually going to need a wireless N router even if the slow down is a different problem? Just want to be 100% sure it's something I need before I spend money on it.http://wlanbook.com/which-is-faster-wireless-router-or-wired-internet/ Quote from: Poyples on January 30, 2011, 07:16:52 AM

You can safely ignore the "advice" regarding your "need" for wireless-N; first, their math is flawed; the speedtest.net speed you are being given is already in megabits per second, and last I checked the speed you are getting of 2.59mbps is nowhere near the Wireless-G speed of 54mbps, and I doubt it has anything to do with signal degradation, because I would hope that was the first thing you checked (if it is and you can't seem to get a good signal though, I'd suspect the "missing antenna" issue, I've seen it happen before). Aside from that, the router configuration could have been changed (or, if they replaced the router entirely, it may not have an optimal setup (it may be configured for wireless-a/b, which in may cases would have about the given speeds)

All that said, clearly, as you've noted- the difference started when they replaced what I would imagine was your access point; either your wireless router, or something similar- either that, or they may have changed settings inadvertently or otherwise. It could even be something as conspicuous as one of the antennas or the antenna having been removed during installation and simply not replaced.Well it's the same router we had before and my signal is always the full 5 bars so I doubt it's an antenna being removed.

What sort of settings are likely to have changed? I logged onto my router and on wireless settings it was set as 'b or g' so I changed it to g only and I'm still getting much slower speeds of about 6mbps at the moment. Not so simple ...but a solution.... for Window 7 Proffesional.

1) Open Network and Sharing Center
2)On left side- Change Adapter Settings
3) Right Click Local Area Connection
4)Go to Proerties
5) Hit Configure
6) Select Advanced Tab
7)Go down to Link Speed & Duplex
8)In pull down Set To: Auto Negotiation

This should fix Ethernet speed issue ...

It did not set as a default on my Laptop

Mfg working on fix..

See Reply #4: "...It was set to Auto so I tried both half and full duplex on 100Mbps as we're supposedly on a 50Mb line, but there was no change in the speed we received..."The Wireless adapter has a 802.11 networking STANDARD. Check the wireless card if it supports b/g/n or b/g only against the router mode settings/features. If its in mixed mode(b/g/n) set on router, follow the wireless card support(b/g) and set the router to b/g mode and check the difference.

Solve : extend my wireless network to an access point away from the house?

Answer»

Hi. My first thread and I am not a computer techie so PLEASE bear with me if come across as a bit of a novice.

My CURRENT wireless router is in my home and is a Belkin G (F5D7633-4). I want to extend this wireless network to an outside office and have run about 15 metres of ethernet cable in anticipation of being able to connect from this G router. At the other end, (in the outside office) I want to install a Belkin N wireless router (F5D8233) and convert it to an access point and connect via the ethernet cable I have already laid. When operational I will be using a PC with Windows XP and also, eventually Linux

Does anyone know how to change the settings of the Belkin 'N' router to MAKE it into a wireless access point.

Don't think it's relevant but in my home I run a Mac with OSX.

Many thanks, and please, if anyone responds think of me as a beginner and keep instructions simple!! When you setup the second router, connect some computer to it and NAVIGATE to http://192.168.2.1/ on that computer. Login to the configuration page and click "Use as Access Point" frmo the navigation menu at the left. Then just click enable.

It's that easy. Thanks TechGeek. I've managed it!! Not quite as simple for me as probably for you, I had to reset the router I wanted to use and assign it a different IP address but everything seems to now work perfectly.

Many thanks

Solve : Cannot find server or DNS error on laptop?

Answer»

I have a GATEWAY running Windows XP.

I have configured and connected to my home wireless NETWORK and I have connection when I boot up the laptop with "excellent" signal.
However, when I open IE I'm getting the "page cannot be displayed" with the "Cannot find server or DNS error" at the bottom of the page.
All other electronics that have connected to my wireless network are working properly...cell phone, Kindle, PS3, and Wii.

Called Comcast to see if they could help and tried all their "tricks" through the command screen and didn't GET anywhere.

Not sure what to try NEXT to get this thing to connect and display webpages.

Any help is appreciated!

ThanksSome members here understand ComCast setup.
But first some questions.
Was it ever working right?
What do you mean when you say bother things are working? How do they connect? And Which Gateway? Laptop? Which version of XP? You should have SP3. Earlier versions of XP may or may not work right on wireless. Did you use the Wireless Wizard? Is the Wireless router from ComCast? Does it use WEP or WPA.?

When you setup tour network, you normally use the automatic settings. So it is not necessary to SPECIFY a DNS. ComCast does DNS for you.

Solve : Can't access files over network?

I have three computers that run Windows XP, and I recently bought a computer with Windows Vista. When I try to USE the Vista computer to access one of my XP computers, I am able to share files and printers. But when I use an XP computer to try to access the Vista computer, I am not able to. Why is this?I SAW a thread somewhere that had a SIMILAR problem. The suggested solution was to turn disable password protection for files and folders on the Vista machine.

Solve : Problem with connecting via wired LAN?

Answer»

I'm not a big expert on computers, but I'll try to explain as best as possible my problem.

Ok, two weeks ago my cell phone FELL on my laptop (Acer TravelMate 8200) right where the internal hard disk is located, DAMAGING it. So I looked online and bought a new one that arrived and works perfectly. I re-installed Windows Professional with all the updates from Windows Update and all the drivers that I found on the Acer website. Everything works perfectly except that I can't connect the computer to the internet with the LAN cable (before the disk broke I COULD just plug in any wire and internet would work). The acer driver does not have a setup.exe file (all the other drivers did) but a bunch of .sys, .din and .dll files.
So I got EVEREST and figured out that I have an "INTEL PRO/1000 PM Network Connection" PCI Device which is shown as a ? on the device manager. I went to look for drivers or installers on the Intel website but nothing, I wrote them an e-mail and they gave me a link:

http://ftp.sco.com/pub/openserver5/507/drivers/eeG_3.1.7a/nic.eeG.3.17a.README

But I do not understand a thing about it.

I was wondering if there is just s imple way to make the ethernet connection work again (again, in the device manager this is shown as ?) without having to go touch and tweak stuff inside the Windows folder? If you need any other information pleaswe ask.

Thank you so much EVERYONE!I also forgot to say that with the wireless it connects perfectly to the router and therefore internet. I guess the problem is the ethernet controller. In the device mangager I get these 4 with the ? symbol:
Ehternet Controller
PCI Device
PCI Serial Port
PCMCIA MTD-0002Check the CD you got with the laptop. It should contain all the drivers for you computer, including the built-in ethernet adaptor.

Solve : Connected to network but can't connect to internet through it?

Answer»

I have no idea what's going on!
Recently i moved into a halls of residence with my laptop. Previously i had connected to the internet through a dialup connection, but now I'm in the halls i have to connect to the internet through the network. As soon as I plug the ethernet cable in and then click internet explorer, it should direct me to the cablecom website where i should sign up for their service. I'm connected to the network and i can SEE all the other computers in the halls, but i cannot gain internet ACCESS through it. What I need to know is how to allow my computer to connect to the internet VIA the network and not via dialup. Please help me I've been trying for LIKE a week to figure this out!
Thank you very very much!Do your network have router intalled in it? In other word, do other computers in the network can directly connect to the internet? If so, try copying their gateway and dns. If still not able to connect, try an IPadd (be ware not to conflict others IP) close to theirs. Again if not, try contacting your system administrator for some firewall setting if there is.Contact your schools IT department and explain your problem to them. Could be you have to "jump thru some hoops" to get it set up right.

Solve : Client for Microsoft Networks?

Answer»

I am running Win 2000 and IE 6.0. Both are fully updated. I have recently come seen references to security ISSUES with Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Printer SHARING for Microsoft Networks. Can't tell if this is CURRENT info.

We just have one PC and don't have a network at this time.

Should I disable or uninstall these two parameters on my NIC connection?
Just MAKE sure, that File and Print Sharing is disabled: http://security.utexas.edu/personal/windows/sharing.html

Solve : Internet connection problem. Help.?

Answer»

Ok guys this one's really confusing.
While I'm using Internet Explorer it sometimes cuts out and I'm left with the error page. No matter how many times I refresh, the page doesn't change. It takes about half an hour until the internet reconnects. This usually happens about three times a night with a GAP of approximately 2 hours inbetween. I'm also on msn at the time and using limewire but the thing is that they don't cut out when Internet Explorer does. But sometimes instant messages on msn can't be delivered. So I thought it was just a problem with the browser so I downloaded Firefox and the same thing happens. Lately it's been cutting out even more frequently. There's nothing wrong with the CONNECTION because otherwise the modem would indicate so. I've tried disabling then enabling the network connection but this doesn't work. So how do I fix this? I'm gonna say thanks guys in advance I'd appreciate any help you could give me.P2P software are notorious for hogging your connection if you let them. TRY LOWERING your max download and upload speed and see if that makes a difference. (Or try shutting down Limewire altogether for a while)

If that doesn't help I think some more info will be needed.
What version of windows are you using?
What protection software do you have? (antivirus, firewall, etc)
How are you connected to the internet? I.e. are your computer connected directly to the modem or do you have any equipment between the modem and pc?So what you are saying is that when you're surfing, Internet Explorer periodically goes into "Page cannot be displayed" mode, and sometimes the IM's you send on MSN Messenger cannot be delivered, but with Limewire you can always download, and people download from you?

I wouldn't be at all surprised if your PC was infected with some sort of malware, probably acquired via Limewire. And as Deerpark said, the bandwidth issue could be relevant, especially when multiple users are downloading files from you.

Try turning off Limewire completely, and surf for a while and see if the problem re-appears. If it doesn't, you know which application is guilty. If Limewire is the culprit, then within Limewire, decrease the amount of simultaneous uploads allowed, and decrease the amount of files that a CERTAIN user can download simultaneously from you.

If Limewire is not the problem, update your virus scanner with the latest definitions and run a full scan. Install Ad-Aware and Spybot, update them, and run full anti-spyware scans. Good luck.

Solve : Internet will not connect after hibernation?

Answer»

Last night (Dec. 31) my battery on my laptop wasn't charging, and it was on low, so the computer hibernated. When I turned it back on, the Internet WOULD not CONNECT no matter what I tried to do.

Since then, I have CONTACTED my ISP and the laptop maker (no clue), rebooted my computer about 10 times, tried system restore about 15 times, tried manually adding a new wireless connection, tried the FN + F2 key (turned it off then on), tried unplugging the eternet box, tried a cmd prompt (ipconfig/release,renew,etc.)..absolutely nothing. Everything I do has absolutely no effect. I'm starting to think I should just reformat my laptop as I need it fixed for classes that are going to start up. The ONLY thing I got to work is that it "ESTABLISHED" a connection to my wireless network, but when I click the little computer icon and the "Support" tab on the wireless, it shows absolutely nothng for address type, ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway. There's just blanks.

Can anyone PLEASE help me? Specs. are below..

Running Windows XP
Laptop - Asus A3H
Speedstream Ethernet (I believe 5200)
Sympatico ISP

We have 3 laptops in the house (including mine) and a desktop - the other two laptops and desktop work fine.

I know the PROBLEM originated from when my laptop hibernated because of low battery power if that helps any. Normally I just system restore, but my system won't do a restore.

Thanks.

Solve : HDMI Connection and no picture????

Answer»

Hi, I have got an ASUS D22 Media Centre pc and have recently TRIED to connect the system to my TV using the HDMI connector. I am unable to get a picture can anyone think of a reason why or is there anything else I need to do??

The picture is there if I use a straight forward AV cable but not via HDMI. The TV's are modern Panasonic and Philips but I did read that some TV's cannot show the output from a computer, is this true?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Dom Quote from: dommarley on October 11, 2007, 08:35:40 AM

but I did read that some TV's cannot show the output from a computer, is this true?
Not true... but how to get it to show the output depends on what TYPES of inputs the TVs have.

Do they have HDMI inputs?Hi Deerpark, thanks for the reply. The input to the TV is one of two HDMI sources where the cable is plugged into, you then select the relevant HDMI input using the remote control and a picture should appear??That depends on how your computer is setup..
Do you have another screen connected to the computer? If you do you probably need to configure the computer to output a signal to both screens. How to do this depends on what graphics card you have in the machine. But if you can give us the name of it someone should be able to tell you have to do it.

But yes if the TV is the only screen connected I believe the picture *should* appear automatically. Thanks again for the prompt reply. The TV will be the only screen connected to the system so I am at a BIT of a loss as to why there is no picture.

Thanks for the INFO on the graphics card, I believe the make is an "NVidia nForce 7600GS Graphic Card" if anyone has any suggestions?

Thanks Dom

As far as I know you it's quite a complicated method.

Probably best to see if it will boot from USB, or look into using another CD drive for a DAY or two to get it all installed.

Solve : two routers boost signal??

Answer»

I just got fios installed in my house. It comes with the wireless router...which is setup downstairs on the family pc. All my stuff...xbox, laptop, pc, psp, ps3 are all up stairs where the signal is weak. I have the OLD wireless router still. Can I set that up somehow so that I can get a better signal upstairs with all of my stuff? That depends greatly on how advanced the old router is. The router will have to support being configured as a wireless repeater. I honestly haven't seen a lot of consumer grade routers that supports this though. Unless you've got a 3com router like mine. The downside of repeating is that the wireless network speed is going to be reduced.

But maybe all you need to do to get a decent signal is to experiment with the position of the new router and how its antenna is angled. Depending on the router there might also be the possibility of buying a more powerful antenna.

You could also pull a cable between the two routers and use the old router as a secondary wireless network. Just make sure to configure the two router to use DIFFERENT channels for wireless to minimize interference.

Lastly there's the possibility of buying a dedicated wireless repeater.

Different routers provide different wireless connection SPEEDS. i'm using 802.11 g, however, 802.11 b (i think), is often slower than 802.11 g. Quote from: JXY on December 30, 2007, 05:46:56 PM

Yeah... but how is this related to the USER's problem? It's an alternative METHOD to boost signal.

Solve : Wireless and Firewalls?

Answer»

Quick question. If I have my firewall enabled on my wireless router, does that protect my computers on my network if I disable the ones installed on them? I have my router firewall enabled, and the only way I seem to be able to get file sharing to work is by disabling the firewalls on the computers themselves.NO.
The firewall on your router protects for some sort of attacks, identity thefts etc, but not all of them. It is vulnerable to an "inside" attack. If you visit a compromised web page, than the illegal transfers will appear to your router firewall as NORMALS, for they will be initiated by your local computers and not the network attacker.

A very scarce answer, the right answer is much more complicated (and I don't know more, unfortunately).I think if you have your router firewall enabled your computers are PRETTY much protected.
The reason is that the router has its own hardware firewall installed that will protect your computer. There's really no need for a software firewall program such as Comodo, Norton, or any other third party firewall software program.

I agree with Viking. Yep like Viking says, routers only protect against inbound attacks. It offers no PROTECTION against trojans and other types of outbound attacks. And seeing as trojans are probably the most common type of infection on computers today, I wouldn't live without a software firewall.
Note that the built in Windows firewall has very poor outbound protection, so get a decent one like ZoneAlarm or Comodo. Thanks for the info everyone. I liked my norton 360, but it was giving me too many headaches. I switched to zonealarm and that seemed to clear up my problems. One time I disabled the Zone Alarm firewall running on XP and I visited a few sites that test your firewall's strength. The firewall running on my Linksys WRT54G router passed without mention of any vulnerabilities.

http://www.hackerwatch.org/probe/

https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=symThis is because those sites all test for inbound attacks. I.e. attacks trying to gain access from the outside. Even the most basic router can protect against most inbound attacks simply because of the way routers work. (All unsolicited inbound traffic is BLOCKED by default simply because routers don't know how to handle it.)
But as I've already stated a router provides little protection against attacks coming FORM within a network such as trojans, email worms and so on. Your best protection here is up to date AV protection and a good software firewall.

Solve : Netgear DG834GT with AOL help please...?

Answer»

Merry Christmas everyone!

I recently changed my ISP from SKY to AOL but wanted to keep using the Netgear DG834GT I received from SKY as apposed to the new Thomson Speedtouch router I GOT from AOL.

When I have the Netgear router connected, it does show that I have a connection in my internet settings & the routers 'i' light is lit, but I get nitto in IE.

I've got an idea that it might be something to do with AOL's PASSWORD system as I remember having to enter my username & password the first time I used IE with the Speedtouch modem, but I can't seem to FIND the option for the Netgear router to USE a password.

Any ideas chaps? thanks in advance...From the Netgear manual I've found, it appears the router got an SETUP wizard that tries to determine the proper configuration automatically. Have you tried this?
It should be available from the main menu of the router's config manager. Thanks, I'll give it a try.

I happen to know that "bt" means British Telecom, but not everybody on here will! This is not a UK-only forum.

As it happens, I live in Bristol, and I have Virginmedia cable broadband. If you live in a FORMER Telewest or NTL area you can get their cable internet service which is pretty good value.

Solve : Fax machine and internet connection?

Answer»

This is wierd. I bought a fax machine three weeks ago and plugged it into my phone line jack and it works fine. I didn't connect the two but since I bought the fax I also started having connection issues with my wireless laptop. Tonight I disconnected my fax machine and BINGO, connection issues are history. Any ideas as to why this is and how can I use both? Have you got DSL filters?

Also, when you disconnected the fax, did you switch it off as well?

Actually, I jumped the gun on this one. This morning, with my fax still disconnected, my IP address was wrong. I've tried, several times, re installing my wireless LAN driver and tried IPCONFIG /RENEW also several times. It seems to be a sporadic occurrence. I've disconnected my wireless router and am now mooching off a neighbors. This also works at times. What can cause a sporadic problem? Anyway, is your IP SET to be CONFIGURED AUTOMATICALLY by DHCP?

Right click the wireless connection in Network Connection, Properties, Then scroll down to TCP/IP, click properties, then are both the tabs that come up set to automatic?

Actually, my neighbor is my daughter and I'm mooching just to see if my router was causing the problem. were do I find "wireless connection in Network Connection, Properties" Thanks for the help Quote from: Taras49 on December 30, 2007, 10:22:10 AM

Hold up sorry, I assume you're using Windows XP?

If so:

Control Panel -> Network Connections -> then there is a display of all your network connections. Right click the one that EXISTS to your router, and the click properties.

I'm doing this all from memory, so hopefully I've got the wordings correct...No, I'm using Vista

I've entered "ipconfig" (without the quotation MARKS) in the start mode and after hitting enter a DOS screen pops up for all of a millisecond so I can't read it. Is there more than just "ipconfig" to type in the start mode so that the DOS screen stays put??
Instead of ipconfig type cmd and hit enter.
This way you get a permanent command LINE window.
now type ipconfig and hit enter.

Solve : problem setting up home network?

Hello out there. My family has a DELL xps 400 in the living room and I have a dimension 4100 in my room. We have a netgear wireless router in the living room and I installed a belkin wireless card in my 4100. I keep trying to setup my wireless router but I NEVER get passed the setup and can never get the wireless set up in the living room and I desperately want internet in my room. Can anyone help me? I think we need a bit more details in order to help...

Exactly how is setup FAILING on you? Is it some kind of setup utility you got with the router or is it a browser based setup?
KNOWING the name/model # of that Netgear router COULD also prove useful. The router disk initiates a setup in the browser and tells me how to setup the router to the computer. But when I hook up the dsl to the router and the router to the computer, it doesn't find the connection and closes the setup. Is everything connected correct?

On the router there should be a LED lighting up for each computer connected plus the modem.

Solve : Help needed, sharing internet connection with linksys and paradyne?

Answer»

I have internet using Paradyne (now Zhone) ADSL router 6211-I2-200 for PPPoA operation and it is working fine.I wanted to share the internet connection using a linksys BEFSR41 4 port router between two computers. So through the web INTERFACE of the linksys, I enabled dhcp but internet access isnt available.the computers are receving ip addresses but the dns servers are set as the default gateway (192.168.1.1). Any suggestions would be appreciated. Would I have to use static IPs or PPPoE instead? The problem is the two router SETUP.
EITHER disable the DHCP server on the Linksys router. It should then work as a switch with the computers receiving IPs from the modem. Just make sure NAT and DHCP server is enabled on the modem ELSE it wont work. I use this setup myself. (Different modem and router though, but the principle is the same.)
Or disable the routing functionality of the modem. I FOUND this post on another forum that explains it.
It is at the bottom of the first post.

Solve : Networking and IP Addresses?

I have a novice question regarding Networking...If i set up an Network does each computer have it's own IP or only one IP COMING from the ROUTER. Also after you answer this for me, can you provide me a source that i can READ from on this i.e. an article or some sort of knowlegde
base thanks!Whenever you have two or more computers networked, each computer will need to have a unique IP. The IP is what the computers use to connect to each other.
A router usually handles the assigning of IPS automatically by using a DHCP server.

Solve : How to Map a Drive through out a Domain Controler?

i am a IT Administrator for construction company. i am having a small problem.
Please tell me how to make a map drive in my computer throughout a domain controller,
what i wanted to make different folders in server for different users. after that users can keep there impotent data in the mapped drive (Mapped drive Mean Server Hard Drive Space) and i can backup there data from server.

i have seen This in my class room. when im go to the class the IT administrator gave me a user name & password. i loged on using that user name & password. when i logged on to the pc, theres having a mapped drive in the my computer, if iam logon to the another computer using my username its having that mapped drve with my data. this is what i wanted to do in my company.
HOPE u'll will understand me.

waiting for answers

Thanks
I THINK you are talking about roaming user profiles. What you will need to do is write a script with the needed maps. Then you will need to go into the Active directory and point each User to the map. This will set them up each time they login.thanx buddy.........

if u dont mind pls tell me how to write that script.

this ma mail id [email protected]To create a network map drive.
Let's suppose you wish that the share \\station1\TheShare to be mapped in the L:

net use L: \\station1\TheShare

Pay attention at network user rights for accessing that share.
See a little more here: http://www.cae.wisc.edu/site/public/?title=nt4netuse .
First off my apoligizes for the short incomplete answer the other day.
Try this:
Open Notepad and write in your needed maps.
Code: [Select]echo

net use f: \\server\c
net use g: \\workstation\pictures
you will then need to save this (any name, I name ours login.bat) with a .bat extension.
Save it here: C:\WINNT\SYSVOL\domain\scripts
Then go into Active Directory and open a user, select the profile tab and type in login.bat(the name you cretead) in the Logon script LOCATION. Select OK and then finish correcting the rest of the users.

I hope this is more defined for you.

Side note:
You can create multiple logins for each user. Just create seperate scripts and point the user to the script they need.Ran across this article TODAY and immediately thought of this post.

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/wxpplogs.htmlViking is correct.

Solve : Setting Up Port Forwarding?

Answer»

I've been trying to set up PORT forwarding with my internet connection, but no matter what I try I can't get it to work. I've gone through all the INSTRUCTIONS at www.portforward.com for my specific router and DSL modem (D-Link LI-524, Westell 6100) and set up a static IP, however, every time I run a test of the port, it continually gives me an error that the port is not open.

I'm on a wireless connection with my DELL laptop running Vista Business. I made exceptions in Windows Firewall, but still no luck. I enabled (let's say for example) port 42420 on my D-Link router, then on the Westell, and then made an exception in Vista firewall, and the port still is indicated as closed. What else could I do to set up port forwarding? What kind of test are you using? In addition to Broni's question, what program are you trying to open a port for and have you configured this program to use the port you have forwarded? The test I ran was the uTorrent Port Checker (http://www.utorrent.com/testport.php?port=#####). This test would continually give me an error reporting the port as not open, no matter what directions I followed to open the port. I am trying to configure the port for uTorrent, and I have configured the program to use the port.Hmm you say you have configure both the modem and the router? This means your modem is also functioning as a router and I think the port isn't being forwarded correctly because of the dual router setup. Coincidentally I found a GUIDE on how to configure your modem to work with another router. You may want to try this.
http://www.lava.net/support/Westell_6100_DSL_Modem_Installation_Guide

If you don't feel comfortable messing around with your modem I suggest you disable the routing capabilities of your router (it will basically work as a switch then). You should be able to do this by disabling the DHCP server on the router.

Dear all,

Can any body HELP me how to password protect LAN connection. I mean, I am accessing the internet VIA LAN, and I want that no body else can access the internet from my PC.

Moreover, I also like my computer to be stand alone PC i.e. disabling LAN temporarily.
Do I need to install any firewall or is there any software for this.

Regards.
Is it HOME network? What Windows version?

..but somebody is still allowed to use your computer for other purposes?we have internet service here through cable PROVIDER who has the connection through fibre optics. I am using Windows XP.

Yeah, my kid uses the computer to play games, and as he is very young, I dont like that he can access the internet in my absence.

Regards.
There are some 3rd party programs, which will lock down Internet access, but I didn't find any free ones.
Another option would be to create another account for your kid.
I don't remember, how it was in XP, but in my Vista, I can right click on any program (like "iexplore.exe"), and set it up to be run as Administrator only. This way another profile user won't be able to start IE.I have alreay created a seperate account for my kid but problem is remain the same, lan connection is active even his account is not set as administrator Quote
but problem is remain the same, lan connection is active
If you disable his browser, how is he gonna go to the Net?Put a password on his account so that YOU have to be there when he wants to use the computer (Internet).

Solve : Bad router? or something else??

Answer»

Hello,
I'm new to the forum but I have a frustrating problem that hopefully somebody can help me out with. For some reason my router stops working almost every day. I'll come back from work and it will be blinking that it doesn't have internet connection. I try everything I can think of from right here at my COMPUTER but in the END I have to go unplug the router and the modem, then plug the modem directly into my roommates computer, then unplug it again and hook it back up through the router. I’ve tried just resetting the router and just the modem but it never works.
As I said before it is a Belkin Wireless G router. I have the firewall enabled, I have the security set up so that it requires a network key, the only thing I have done to the router other than that is I have the DMZ for my computer enabled for faster torrent downloading (most of the time not all the time). There seems to be no common factor for when the router decides to lose connectivity. Every time I do lose internet connection I can STILL see my router, so I know it isn’t me LOSING the signal. I check for firmware updates every time I get on to the router so I know it isn’t that. I have 10MB cable broadband connection and there are 2 pcs hooked into this router, one hard wired and mine wireless, when the router stops working both pcs lose connectivity. I’m using a Linksys wireless G network card (the antenna is a little bent, but I can still see the router so I know it isn’t losing signal). It doesn’t matter if my computer is on or off, the router still, seemingly at random, will lose internet. I have a dynamic connection type…I don’t know what else to say about it. If you need more details I will gladly provide them. I am simply out of ideas at this point…did I just buy a crappy router? (I did get the cheapest one I could find due to lack of funds). Any help is greatly appreciated.

You realize, that it disables router, as a firewall, right?

Then, I think, you have to start with your modem. Try to connect one of your computer, straight to a modem, and see, if same thing will happen.Yes, I know the DMZ makes my computer operate outside the firewall, that is the whole point. The modem itself won't lose connection like the router does, I've tried that. That is why it must be the router. It could be, but I assume, that before you run for a new router, you want to try to find some other solutions...
- Did you update its firmware?
- You MAY have some interference from some other wireless devices. In router setup, try some other channel (mine is set to channel 11) Alright, I'll try a different channel and see what happens, I have the update set to automatic every time i log into the router so it is up to date. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll repost if this problem persists.Fair enough Nope, changing the channel didn't work, I came back today and when I booted up my comp the internet was off and I had to reset the modem and router.Must be the router, then. Sorry, we tried Yep it sounds like a classic case of failing router. Just wondering...what is the make and model of your modem? Some of the newer modems come with a router built in and if you have this type they could be having trouble matching firewalls.

My gut says its a bad router and that this is a long shot.

It is an Ambit model #U10C018 cable modem, that is an interesting theory...so do you think I should try shutting off the router's firewall??That modem doesn't appear to have a built in firewall (or router for that matter) according to this page.
But hey it doesn't hurt to try and disable the router's firewall.

Solve : Wireless help: Connecting a Nintendo DS to Speedtouch ST585v6sl router?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I'm having some trouble connecting my son's Nintendo DS to my wireless router & think it's to do with DHCP settings.

Here's where I am so far:

Changed the routers security to WEP (DS compatible)

Entered the WEP encryption key into the Nintendo DS.

When attempting to connect to the router, I GET an 'unable to obtain IP address' message on the DS.

The router looks like this:

(note the same IP address)

When I select the 'Unknown-00-16-56-95-93-25' device I get this:

When I select 'configure' I see this:

Continued

The routers other settings:

(configure):

If I manually enter an IP address into the DS to obtain from the router, I also need to manually enter the subnet mask, gateway and DNS (primary/secondary).

How do I find out my primary/secondary DNS?Managed to do it

Incase someone with the same problem stumbles across this thread:

1. Access ST585 router by ENTERING 192.168.1.254 into your browsers address bar
2. Click on 'Home Network' and select wireless WLAN:

3. Click on 'configure' top right:

4. For the DS, we need to change security to WEP. An encryption code will appear below - this is the code the DS will need along with the SSID. Make sure 'new stations are allowed (automatically)' is set aswell:

Continued5. Now select 'Interfaces' under the 'Home Network' menu on the left and then 'LocalNetwork' as shown here:

6. Then 'configure' at the top right like before:

7. We then add an IP address for the device:

8. Next click on 'devices' to the left under 'Home connection'.

You should see a dsldevice, ethport1 and the new WLAN device represented.

If the new device hasn't appeared, it's probably because you haven't attempted to connect the device to the router with the WEP encryption key. It will appear as something like 'unknown 00-11-22-33-44-55' which you can edit by selecting the device then configuring it as we done before.

For Nintendo DS Wi-Fi settings, just enter the SSID matching the routers & the encryption code & select 'obtain IP address automatically'.

If you get stuck I'll be glad to help...

Sorry for the poor quality in this quick guide, some of those arrows are suspect & I'm not sure about the USE of red!

Solve : File sharing question?

Answer»

I have a wireless home network with two PCs and an XBOX 360. One PC and the XBOX are hard wired while the 2nd PC is wireless. My question has to do with file sharing. Through the XBOX I am able to play mp3s and view pics on my main pc, but I am unable to access them on the wireless PC. I have file sharing ENABLED, but when I try to view them under shared files, nothing is there. What am I doing wrong? Both PCs are running XP Pro SP2. So essentially you're trying to wirelessly access the 2nd PC via the Xbox...yeah?No, I'm able to access mp3s and pics through the xbox already as it is hard wired to the ROUTER. What I'm trying to do is access mp3s through the 2nd pc, which CONNECTS wirelessly.

Funny thing is I was able to get something working last night, where I was able to get access to the folder on pc 1 that contains my mp3s through pc 2, but this morning when I tried it again, I got an error message that I couldn't connect.

Weirder still, as I'm typing this, I decided to check again, and now I can access the folder from pc 1 on pc 2 again. Maybe it just has something to do with the strength of my wireless connection, which varies occasionaly from good to poor because the 2 pcs are on separate floors and opposite ends of the house. Right, I think I've got you.

Wireless isn't so much a science as it is an art.

Have you got the funds/space to get a repeater? This will pick up the wireless and re-broadcast it. Might HELP, as if it's a really weak connection that might be why you're experiencing these troubles, however it might have nothing to do with that.

First things to check, are there wireless telephones about? Double check they're not interfering, also, no MICROWAVE ovens, or other h/d electrical items nearby or in between the two PCs is there? They can affect signal quality.

What rating is your wireless? b, g, n(draft)?

Solve : Advise On Ethernet Switch/ADSL?

Answer»

Hi Everyone

I want to connect three computers together Via Ethernet Switch. I just dont know how to assign the same IP Address to all the Computers. Ive run the Network Setup Wizard on all the Computers. Im using Siemens Speedstream 4200 MODEM. Any help will be great. Thank YouYou can't do that. Each machine needs its own IP.

What you need is a router to connect to your modem. Todays routers come with a 4 port switch BUILT RIGHT into it. And they can be setup using your web browser.

Take a look at linksys.com for a good PLACE to start to buy one.

Will do, Thanks.

Solve : Problem with internet connection sharing?

Answer»

Alright well i have a laptop and a desktop, My goal is to get both of them connected to the internet. Since I recently had to terminate my ISP I currently use Wifi on my laptop to get internet from my nieghboors router. I have 2 NICs on my laptop(Wifi and Wired) I want to get connection from my Wifi NIC and share the connection through the wired NIC that is connected to my Linksys router. My linksys router will then be connected to the internet and i can get a connection with all my computers in my house. This is the first time I really messed with networking and ICS. Can someone give me a detailed guide on how to do it. Instead of messing around with ICS, why not hardwire the desktop to the router (I assume that is the way it is currently set up but you don't say) then connect wirelessly with the laptop (again ASSUMING it's a wireless router)? Both are then connected to the Internet THRU the router and no hassle with ICS.

Alan <>< But the router wouldnt have a connection, I currently have my desktop and laptop wired to router and my LAPTOPS second wireless NIC is connected to the my neighboors router. I wanna how I can share the connection with all other computer connected to my router.
