Solve : Web Server, how many users can mine support??

Answer»

I am RUNNING a web server with the following specifications:

Memory: 186.60MB
Virtual memory: 188.22MB (usually not even a megabyte used)
Disk space: 2.79GB
Processor: 366MHz
OS: Ubuntu Linux "Server" edition
PHP, MySQL, Perl, Apache2, TWO web applications (Wordpress and a SMF Forum)

Can someone take a gander at about how many users my site can handle at once? Do you have any documentation for the Ubuntu server / have you checked their site?

Solve : Computer says is connected but can't gain acces?

Answer»

I have a win xp computer and just got sudden link cable internet installed, today. The techs spent 2 hours trying to get my computer to get ACCESS to the internet and still couldnt . they tried my husbands and it worked RIGHT away. I dont understand it THOUGH, as I have been getting access to the neigbors wireless network just fine.

I dont have a firewall as I had zone alarm but uninstalled it recently.
I have superantispyware, AVg 7.5, rogueremover and spybot.IMHO, if you pay your ISP for your cable service, it's their obligation to MAKE it work. You mentioned a wireless connection. If you have a wireless ROUTER then you could hook to husbands computer and then configure with a WPA2-PSK security which is not to bad.., providing you have a wireless card in your computer? or get one. If you are not happy with that...Broni is right, you may have to stand on your ISP to get them to make it work..

Solve : Can i get help setting up a Belkin ADSL modem/router here???

Answer»

I dont get it?
How can i open 192.168.2.1 in my browser if not connected to net while trying to install router?
I am quite new to this.
Running XP on PC. Need to set up BELKIN ADSL F5D7632-4 so can go wireless with laptop.
I dont understand IP address's much so looking for someone patient to walk me through this from the begginning.
We use external modem currently from Orange but beleive this can be ditched, its a USB modem so have not been using ethernet cables.
Does anything make sense to you cos it does not to me.
Please help, getting real frustrated now.  192.168.2.1 is the IP for the router. When you TRY to connect to the IP with your browser, your computer will SEND a request to the router. The router will recognize that your computer is trying to connect to it and will redirect you to its SETUP page.

The router should come with documentation on how to set it up. But I'll be HAPPY to answer any questions you have, if I can. Make sure you have all the cabling hooked up from your computer to your router before you try that.  When it asks for a password just leave it blank, there is no password by default.

Solve : What is the point of bridging a connection??

Answer» GREETINGS all.
I was wondering what is the purpose of bridging a connection? I have two Ethernet ports on the back of my MOTHERBOARD and I have two separate physical Ethernet  cords going into my motherboard. I "bridged" them together via the Windows device thing. Does this provide me with any advantage? Or is it just pointless? Thanks in ADVANCE!If one of them is wireless you can bridge it with your wired nic.  Then you can plug another COMPUTER into that nic and share your connection.  This usually works, although I've been having some problems with it lately.

Solve : Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL router problems?

Answer»

I bought this thing a few days AGO, and proceeded to connect all three of our computers to it. Now, I can access all the computers from each computer, but I put the setup wizard CD in each comp, and it all says the same thing. "Router not found, please make sure the router is properly connected and try again." I've checked all my connections, and everything is fine. All three computers are running Win XP Professional. All the lights that should be lit on the router are lit. I was reading on here that most routers use 192.168.0.1. One of my computers uses this IP as well. Does that matter? It still shows the same error message whether that computer is on or not. I tried resetting the router, and I have the same problem. When I first got the router, I tried setting it up, and it wanted to know IP and subnet mask and stuff that my DSL provider provided me, but the DSL wasn't ready to go at the time, and I didn't have the info, so I quit the setup wizard. Could this be part of the problem? I also tried the ipconfig commands, the window comes up for about half a second then disappears, so I can't see what's going on. How can I resolve that?

I think that's it for now. I really want to get this working right, the DSL is ready to do, and I can't settle for having to use my dads computer to access the internet.

Thanks guys,
JonWhich Linksys model are you trying to configure?

Regardless of whether you're hooking up a hard-wired or wireless system, you need to first declare one computer as the 'hub' which for lack of a better description is the 'admin' station.  Once your hub is up and running then you need to configure your LAN, also from the 'hub'.  The devil is in the details, follow Linksys's directions to the letter and don't try to skip steps and assume things don't need to be DONE or not done in the order prescribed in the documentation.  Approach this project one small step, one pc at a time.  Try to avoid overwhelming yourself with the 'big picture',  you will only frustrate yourself.  There are no short-cuts to a clean installation and the end results will be well worth the time and effort it took to do it right in the first place.  This should be a 'one-time' deal and if it's worth being done, it's worth being done right.  Good LUCK.  It's model BEFSR41. The router came with almost no instructions, it does have two steps, they both involve inserting the CD into the computer and following the instructions on the CD. Linksys has a 72 page user's manual in PDF format here.  I believe you can find plenty of helpful info on their site. Product Description

Think of the EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch as a kind of "splitter" for your Internet connection. Just connect your DSL or Cable Modem to the Router, and all the computers in your household can share the Internet -- all at the same time. The built-in 4-port switch lets you attach four local PCs directly, or daisy-chain out to more hubs and switches as your network grows.

Once your computers are connected to the Internet through the Router, they can communicate with each other too, sharing resources and files. All your computers can print on a shared printer connected anywhere in the house. And you can share all kinds of files between computers -- music, digital pictures, and other documents. Keep all your digital music on one computer, and listen to it anywhere in the house. Organize all of your family's digital pictures in one place, to simplify finding the ones you want, and ease backup to CD-R. Play head-to-head computer games within the household, or against Internet opponents. UTILIZE extra free space on one computer when another's hard drive starts to fill up.

It's all easier than you think -- the included Setup Wizard takes you through configuring the Router, step by step. The Router can act as a DHCP server for your network, so your PCs are configured automatically. Universal Plug-and-Play (UPnP) lets specialized Internet applications configure the Router so you don't have to. Built-in NAT technology helps keep intruders out of your computers.

With the EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch at the heart of your home network, you don't need to be a networking genius to share printers, files, and your high-speed Internet connection. 1.  Model BEFSR41 Product Information:

I was finally able to access the router by changing my network settings to automatically supply an ip address and all that other crap, and I connected my modem to it, now the router won't access the internet, I tried changing the settings in the router, and now I'm having the same problem as I was before, not being able to access the router. I have no idea what is going on here. I've never had this much trouble with anything in my life. It's enough to drive me insane. I hope someone has a solution, because I'm about to throw it all out into the street and watch it get run over. Do DSL modems have a set IP address or anything? If I remember right they do, but I can't remember what it is. Anyone help out?

Solve : Do Routers go bad??

Answer»

I think my IP address issues stems from my router.  Could that be POSSIBLE?  Do routers go bad?  I connected to a different wireless network connection (maybe my neighbors?)  and it appears my IP address is now fine.  If so, I'll buy another router or should I just keep mooching off my neighbor?Any HARDWARE can go bad over time or under certain conditions (static shock, environmental conditions, etc.). Don't you already have a thread regarding this issue? Try continuing it there. Quote

... buy another router or should I just keep mooching off my neighbor?
LOL.  Well, from an ethical standpoint, I think you know the answer.  I don't think any regular members WOULD recommend you do this, even though you might get away with it for a long time.

When I discovered someone in my neighborhood was connecting via my wireless router, I got smarter and enabled WPA security in my router and put a stop to it.  I still don't know who it was and I really don't CARE to know.  And, I doubt they were depending on my connection, since I had not owned my wireless router very long before I discovered this.  But, I wouldn't advise anyone to do this on a regular basis without permission.

it is because you're administrator block some of the site that you want to access cause its forbidden right.
the BEST THING you must do is contact the admin and ask a password that is not unfiltered.

Solve : Is it possible to port forward without a router??

Answer»

Hi everyone,

Is it possible to port forward without a router? Everyone is saying I can't. Is there any such way I can port forward without a router? I know I tried the following IP into my browser but it doesn't do anything. 192.168.1.1

I thought maybe I can try to access the WEB Interface and port forward? The Web Interface you are referring to is the Web Interface of a router.  You cannot port forward without one.  However, you can tell your firewall to open up certain ports for use, which is pretty much the same thing. Quote

However, you can tell your firewall to open up certain ports for use, which is pretty much the same thing.

...but it's very dangerous thing to do. A firewall protects a computer fully, only when your computer is invisible to the outside world (ports are invisible), and all ports are closed.
It's DIFFERENT when you have router + software firewall combo. When you open a port using router, your software firewall still protects you. Quote from: Broni on OCTOBER 17, 2007, 09:56:30 PM

Solve : Need to change my IP?

Answer»

I'm using a Netgear WG111v2 wireless router, I've got windows XP, Dell Dimension 2400 series, 1 gig of RAM(though I don't SEE how half of this helps ). Oh, and I've got a dynamic ip.

I've tried just about everything I can think of. I've tried ipconfig /release and /renew, I've tried releasing and renewing in my Netgear console, I've turned my router and modem off for 11 hours, I think I've tried just about everything I COULD except for calling, which I'd rather not do.

Any suggestions or tips? Are you talking about changing your WAN IP? I.e. the IP websites, online games, etc, sees? Why do you need to change it?  Heh. Nah, not that, else I'd just use a proxy. I'd like to change it because like most everyone else that wants to change their IP, I've been banned from a game >_> Lol.
Though it wasn't exactly warranted in my opinion, but whatever.
Nice avvy by the way o.oWell actually you do want to change your WAN (also known as public or external) IP. This is the one that is banned.
Unfortunately (for you) we don't offer advice on how to circumvent bans, this is against forum policy.
If you really have been banned without GOOD reason, I suggest you take it up with an ADMIN on the game. If you make a polite request and explain why you think the ban wasn't fair I think you will find that most admins can be reasonable. (Assuming the ban was unfair of course  )

And it is good to hear you have taken a liking to the almighty Flying Spaghetti Monster. You have taken the first step towards true enlightenment.

Nah, I've been pastafarian for about a year now. The problem with talking to the admin would be that he has no email on his site, nor any other information, and the only way of reaching him would be through the game, which I'm banned from. Ironic how they've got that set up, huh?

I think I'll just find out how long the lease on my ip is going to LAST and turn my router off right before the lease is over. Hopefully that'll work.

Thanks anyways though >_
Just out of curiosity... what game is it?
Ragnarok online, and its on a private server. Which aren't really legal themselves, but no one seems to care really.

It really isn't that great of a game, but there's people I like to talk to on there, so whatever.

Solve : Connection Network - Windows XP + PS2?

Answer»

Hello,

Here's my set up... Windows XP Home Edition on my PC, with a Cable Modem, and U.S. Robotics Router. What I'm trying to do is set up to play online games with my PS2 and XBox 360. Whenever I log on with one of the gaming systems, a message pops up on the PC saying there is a another machine using the same IP. I've always been under the impression that a router splits the connection so it can be shared.

My question is, what am I doing wrong? Do I need a secondary IP from my Internet Provider? Do I need to change some settings in the router or PC?

Thanks in advance for any and all responses. The router should be assigning unique IPs for every DEVICE connected to it. So YES I think you need to configure your router.
On your computer could you PLEASE try the following:
Select start and Run...
TYPE cmd and press enter
type ipconfig /all
Post the text the command returns.
(you can copy text by right clicking the command window and selecting Mark. Then drag a box around the text. Right click the white box and it should disappear, then you can paste the text into a reply here.)
I'll be sure and do that as soon as I get home, writing from work right now. Thanks for the response.

i want a lab router configuration can you provide me so that i can practice configuring a router. In ORDER to configure router, you have to have a router.
Every brand of router has a web site, you go to, to set it up.
You can't do it in theory.
What's the router brand? There is Cisco IOS simulation software available. Use a search engine. Most, if not all, of these applications are not free.

Here is a page on Cisco.com that will let you practice basic router configuration:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/certprog/testing/simulation/demo_sim.html

Click the numbers 0-9.Although doing a IOS or other CLI simulation COULD be could practice and is a good recommendation. I'd just like to mention that this is only going to be on more advanced routers. A lab router or basic router used in most home use or small businesses are not going to use this type of router.

Solve : Virtual Private Network and Residential Gateway?

Answer»

Is it possible to USE two computers connected to a DSL line through a residential gateway when ONE is using a company VPN and the other is connected to the general internet? Does this require two DSL connections with separate gateways to access both the VPN and internet. I am getting CONFLICTING answers on another board. I'm not quite sure I understand your question but here goes.

If you're asking if it is possible to share a DSL connection between two computers using a router (aka residential gateway) then yes that should be possible. It shouldn't really matter what the computers are going to connect to.Deerpark,
My neighbor was told by his company's IT department , only 3 personnel, which he says do not have a lot of experience, that he could only access their SITE through a VPN and his wife could not be browsing the internet on her computer. I beleive as long as he does not enable file and printer sharing and continues to use a residential gateway and each of the computers has its own firewall setup that they should not have a problem comprimising the company site. I do not however have any formal training but only what I have picked up in SETTING up several of my own personal internet connections. Both your answer and the answer from another board appear to confirm what I beleive is possible. Hope this clears what I was trying to say in the last post.  Ahh yes that explanation makes you neighbor's issue a lot clearer. And I stick with my previous answer. Since the whole point of a VPN is to create a secure network on top of an existing insecure network I can't see how two computers on the network could cause a problem.

Solve : rearranging our server into a storage what should we do to be safe.?

We have a new crack/ storage for our servers in our office. what would we ganna do so that it would be safe in arranging the server?  We have 3 server the CENSOR net, the other server is for storage.

what is the BEST time to rearrange that server.

I assume you meant Rack and not Crack.

Well considering you will have to take the servers completely offline to move them into their new home, you should do it after close of business or when the least amount of people use them. As for the "safe arrangement", that would depend on server size and alot of other variables. Also I backup before I do everything. So we're doing other peoples HOMEWORK now EH? I'll be on the internet using firefox when a message will come up from the bottom toolbar SAYING  a network cable is unplugged.  Nothing is unplugged, I even replaced the cable.  The ONLINE and activity lights on the modem go out when this happens.  Then the message disappears a few seconds later.  The modem lights flash back on after sometimes 10 seconds, sometimes SEVERAL minutes, when I can continue using the net.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm using XP.Also it's a wired modem, no router. This sounds like a problem with either the modem or your network card. Do all the lights on the modem go out when this happens?
Can you try to connect the modem to another network card? (or failing that perhaps another computer). Quote from: Deerpark on October 21, 2007, 03:47:36 AM

Also, how's the connection from the modem to the wall SOCKET?

No one is messing around with it, and it's not loose is it?

Solve : wireless help!?

Answer»

I apologize ahead of time for my stupidity!

I have a single laptop in my home & a cable/MODEM box that I connect to the internet from.  I bought a router thinking that I could MAKE this COMPUTER wireless and then after several failed attempts found out that a router is only for connecting another computer to an existing wired computer. (?)   Is there a way to make my laptop (which is my only computer) wireless??

I have tried to locate hot spots around my home but failed.
I have a 802.11b/g wireless LAN already installed into my computer (it came with it already on it)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thank youWelcome ABOARD
I guess, you need wireless router.
I'm little bit surprised, because most newer routers are wireless.
What is that modem make, and model?

Solve : Wireless slowdown?

Answer»

I have a wireless network setup throughout my HOUSE using a D-Link DI-524. I am home right now for reading week from COLLEGE, but my mom has had some slowdown issues. She is using a desktop in the BASEMENT, and the router is downstairs too. She notices a major slowdown in speed in the evening, even when the other computers connected to the router aren't being used. It goes from 54 Mbps to 11 Mbps. What could cause this sudden decrease in speed? I'm thinking someone is connecting to our signal at this time. Any INSIGHT?

RichardHave you implemented any wireless security settings, such as encryption (WEP/WPA), hiding your SSID, MAC address filtering, etc.?

If your wireless router is running  DHCP, configure it to only issue as many IP addresses as are needed by those in your household (I guess your PC and your mom's PCs). You definitely want to implement WPA encryption if you haven't already done so.

Try plugging into your router with a cable around the time the "wireless" gets slow. If you notice that your bandwidth speed is reduced even when connected via cable, then the problem would most likely be your general Internet connection, and not just the wireless.

I see that you mentioned that the speed goes from 54 to 11 Mbps. It could be that your wireless router is rated for 802.11g, while your mother's wireless router is only rated for 802.11b.

What can I do once I know someones open ports?
Can I send files or something? and how?

THANKS,
S_R_SWhat exactly are you trying to achieve? I don't understand.u need to connect with the IP....
how u assume that their port is open?can u make CONNECTION?Port SCANNER...
I'm just curious what someone can do and how they do it when they have the ip address and know the open ports..

Depends on what ports are open and what SOFTWARE is listening on those ports. But this thread is starting to sound a little like a "teach me how to hack" thread. And we don't do that on this forum.

Solve : getting lost password?

a guy told me YESTERDAY that he lost his password (that he originally set) for his wireless security.  Can anyone tell me how to find this if lost?Unless he wrote it down somewhere or remembers it if he can get into the ROUTER INTERFACE he can change it there.  If he's forgotten that password then he'll have to do a hard RESET on the router and reconfigure it.

Solve : Norton Internet Security 2008 Network Trust Levels?

Answer»

Hi,

I don't understand the following trust level comments in Norton Internet Security 2008:

"Full Trust" is recommended only when the device cannot reach your computer in more secure "Trust levels".

"Default (Shared)" inherit the trust settings of the network that the device connects to.  Incoming traffic will be inspected ACCORDING to the newtork's policy.

My network is connected to a Linksys router using a COMCAST cable modem.

Thanks,
JoeIn other words, use any level of trust except full trust unless you absolutely have to.  The easiest way for me to DEAL with Norton Internet Security is to uninstall it and use Trend Micro's PC-cillin.  There are some viruses I'd RATHER have on my PC before I'd have Norton Internet Security.Hi,

Thanks for the response.

Solve : too many computers in the house-keep slowing down or cutting out?

Answer»

hello
just wondered if anyone is able to help on this one.

we have three desktop computers in our house with good features. The slightly older computer is the main one and the other two new ones are linked by wireless and run really fast. We usually have no problems with connection.  Anyway, we sometimes sponsor overseas students who stay at our house (usually always from China, some from Japan and Korea) and they always bring their laptops with them. The problem is that when they turn on their computers our computers slow right down to a snailspace or usually just cut out so that we can't even get a page up, yet the students computers work fine.  This is kind of irritating to us as we are the ones paying for internet and have alot of work to do for uni, etc.

Why is it that we cut out or slow down but not them. I assume theirs are working okay because they never say anything and the few times I have asked some of them about their connection, speed etc, they say its fine.

Does anyone have any clues to this?

Thank you.
Internet connection or the computer in general? If it is Internet it may just be because it is a wireless network. (Don't always trust me though I'm a noob)I'd place a newer computer as a main machine, and see, if it helps.Yeah, how old is the "older computer?" Like what OS, processor and amount of RAM?Hey guys

firstly, it is the internet connection which cuts out and says page cant be displayed or something like that, or else our computers just slow right down. we usually have two students at a time which makes it really bad but even when we just have one student who has his LAPTOP on, it still affects our three computers.

Secondly, i am intending to replace the main computer with a new one i just don't have the money at the moment, and the other two guys in the house with the new computers won't change.  so anyway, the main computer is about maybe 6 years old, its a HP, Windows XP, Intel Pentium 4, about 125 or maybe 256MB no more.

Quote

i just don't have the money at the moment
I understand. I thought, all three were yours.
Try this. While you have at least one guest, disconnect one, then both of those two wirelessly networked computers, and see if it helps.
I don't know, if my statement is clear....hehehe.Hi Broni

I appreciate you trying to help me.

Do you definitely think that placing a new computer as the main one would help?  I mean I am going to replace it at some stage just not yet. oh and the MB on the main one is 256MB.

Also, do you think that these wireless laptops have an advantage over desktops or something? Do you think the laptop is taking an UNFAIR portion of the speed. Its just so strange that we are the ones to suffer.  We have 21000MB per month at a speed of supposedly 24000 something or other from our internet PROVIDER but I think its more likely our speed is about 12000 . someone said you have to divide your speed by how many computers are using it, is that correct?

Do you know if wired is better than wireless?

Sorry for so many questions.
Sorry Broni

I forgot to add, I just didn't quite understand what you meant in your last post. If you have a minute do you think that you could maybe explain it again.

Thank you heaps.
Sorry for being unclear...

I don't know about "definitely", but it's worth to try.

What kind of connection is it? DSL?

Now about running some checks.
Lets assume this situation. You have:
a - Main Computer
b - 1st Guy Computer
c - 2nd Guy Computer
d - Guest Laptop
When all connected, b, and c are slow, (I suppose a too, right). d is fast.

Disconnect c, and see if it helps computers a, and b

Further, disconnect c, and b, and see, if it helps aDon't be sorry Broni, I am glad of your help.

Our connection is ADSL, is that the same as DSL?

I will try those checks today however, I have to wait until the other two guys come home later this afternoon.  At the end of the day though, my computer which is the main one will always be slower because it is much older and only Intel Pentium 4 with only 256MB, whereas the other two guys computers are only 12 months old and are HP PAVILION Media Centre PC's with Intel Pentium D processor and 2048MB RAM memory.

Thanks again Broni

DSL comes in two flavors:
- ADSL (Asymetric DSL - download speed is bigger, then upload speed - this is what most home users use, and they simply call it DSL),
- and SDSL (Symetric DSL) - download, and upload speeds are the same - rare, costs more).

Good luck with your tries. Thanks Broni

someone said you have to divide your speed by how many computers are using it, is that correct?

Do you know if wired is better than wireless?

Sorry for so many questions.

Yes, the connection speed is divided between the computers which use that connection in that moment. For computers connected to a wireless network this means their local bandwidth network connection is split between all the wireless connected computers in your network.
Wired is better than wireless, you have better network performances.  Wired computers don't divide their local bandwidth. But it depends largely on which router or switch do you use - this equipment has limited resources and can transfer a limited quantity of data in the time unit. For 3 to 5-6 computers it should be not a problem. It may become a problem if there are too many concurrent connections (caused by programs such as p2p programs - eMule, DC++, torrent clients etc) which could block the router. Note: p2p programs are not a problem, the maximum number of connections allowed from their settings is. If connection speed is decreased drastically when such a program is used, you have to adjust settings so those programs should use less network bandwidth (their maximum connections number should be smaller; how smaller? It's a "try and see" case.)

You said something about a main computer. What do you mean by "main computer"? Do you have another equipment at your location named "router"?

Your computer is not the problem as you describe it - and for internet access it might be just enough what you have now. You said that when another 1-2 computers are added to the network than connection becomes sluggish. The same happens to other 2 newer computers, of your permanent neighbors?

Final note regarding network bandwidth: the bandwidth network of the wan (internet) connection is divided between all the computers (wired or wireless) that use the Internet in that particular moment.
local bandwidth = bandwidth available to your computers when you transfer files between them, from one to another
wan bandwidth = bandwidth available to each of your computers when you transfer files/data between them and some servers on internet.
The used bandwidth of a certain connection is split between all the computers that use that particular connection at that particular moment of time.

I tried switching the machine off and on.. but in VAIN.  I even tried to change the DNS from automatic to MANUAL by entering a DNS address.. no luck.
Try this:

Go to the command prompt and type the following...

ipconfig /flushdns

Now try the Internet.

Solve : My Server is not able to trace out some IP addresses .. why? need help!pls?

Answer»

For some reason my server is not able to trace out most of the USA IP addresses (it doesn't return anything and the script gives timeout after some time) but it does trace out for IP addresses outside the USA.
This is the code we are trying:
shell_exec('traceroute '.escapeshellarg($ipaddress) )

ANYONE KNOW why is it happening? What do you mean by "most"? What do you mean by "USA IP addresses"? (I am sure you made the right checks, but I am puzzled... I don't really understand how many servers did you try and from where).
I think at some REMOTE server screening (such as no answers for some ICMP messages) or a firewall between your host and that server which blocks some ICMP messages. I have such problems because of ISP politics.

[LE] shell_exec('traceroute '[...]) ----> traceroute or tracert? Do you have a program named traceroute on your machine? [/LE]

Solve : Age of Empires (Rise of Rome) on WAN: Limited Success?

Answer»

I have five computers on a 802.11g network. (Actually, they can't be on all at once, since I only have a few WIFI adapters.)

A certain three of them can play AGE of Empires together, and the other two can play together, but I cannot get any computers in the group of three to play with either COMPUTER in the group of two. When I click "Show Games" under the TCP/IP MULTIPLAYER option, I can see all the games hosted on the other computers, but can only join if the game is in the same "group" (either the group of two or group of three).

I switched the WIFI adapters around a bit, so the problem seems to be the actual computers, not the WIFI adapters / MAC addresses.

The computers are:
XP desktop, XP LAPTOP, Windows 2000 desktop (these three can play together)
Windows 2000 laptop, another Windows 2000 laptop (these two can play together)

The XP computers are up to date, but the Windows 2000 computers to not have any service packs.

How can I get all of these computers to play together? I will buy another WIFI adapter when I solve this.

FWIW, some computers run Apache, but this doesn't seem to matter. Also, I haven't had any big problems with networking in Windows (Ie "Explorer \\laptop" at the Command PROMPT typically works).

Thanks.

Solve : VPN Tunnel Help?

Answer»

I know about Remote desktop, and how it access other computers' desktops and that fun stuff. My parents are divorced, so I live at two houses. SAY I'm at my mom's house and I need to get a file from my dad's that I forgot to e-mail of copy to a flash drive to bring it to my mom's house. It would be very easy just to remote desktop to the computer at my dad's and from there copy it to the computer at my mom's. But, for remote desktop you have to be on a network, which these computers aren't. I know that you can create a network through the internet, though, RIGHT? A VPN tunnel. Could I make one from one computer to the other so that I can remote desktop?Yes you could.
You can also configure remote desktop to be accessible over the internet.
Here's a page that explains the SETUP:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/northrup_03may16.mspxI'll have to do that on the computer at my mom's house but at my dad's house the OS is 2k.So what am I supposed to do for 2k? I didn't see anything useful on their website (although I didn't look very hard) and right click on my computer properties doesn't work because their is no remote tab.Remote desktop isn't installed on windows 2000. Fortunately Microsoft provides a download that will let you install it.
Windows XP Remote Desktop
I know it's called XP remote Desktop but it will work on any VERSION of Windows from 95 and up.Yes, my dad already installed Remote Desktop on this 2k computer. But on that website it said that you had to go to the properties if My Computer, click on the remote tab and check a checkbox. I don't have that tab.Ahh sorry I must have experience a small neuron misfire when I posted that last message. That download only installs the client portion of remote desktop. You can't connect to a windows 2000 machine with remote desktop because this feature wasn't available before XP. You will need to use another remote control software.
I've used VNC in the past and it works pretty well.
http://www.tightvnc.com/

You will need to install the server on your windows 2000 machine and then you can use a VNC client to connect to it from your XP machine. So you're saying i need to install it on both machines?

Then what?

I went to start menu-programs-VNC and ran the program but it said it was already up. There is no application for it, thoughYou are killing me

http://www.wikihow.com/Use-VNC-Virtual-Network-Computing-to-Control-a-Computer-Remotely

Note: if those two computers are behind a router/firewall, you will have to make some port redirections on router/firewall so you may be able to connect.

Solve : network latency?

Answer»

Could you please tell me what the factors that determine the network latency are?
And what exactly is the measurement of bandwidth. Some say Hertz, others say (giga/mega/kilo...)bit/s. And, in TCP/IT Guidebook, latency x bandwidth to calculate capacity of a,say, adsl LINE. How comes it, i mean, if bandwidth measured in hertz?

by the way, I also ask about the theoretical data rate and the real one (throughput): for example the FPT Mega Style ADSL pack claims its ideal downloading speed is 1,5Mbps, which means the real data rate should never exceed 1,5Mbps. But in reality the number even reaches more than 200KB/s (1,6Mbps) (of course with the assistance of download accelerator)
Network latency: influenced by distance, electric resistance (in fact another physical property of the transmission medium - I have a lapsus) when we talk about transmission through metal cables (so we don't cover here the cases of optic fiber or wireless transmission), number of hops between source and destination, what data transformations occur in different equipments (like router, switches, repeaters, other equipments) - in short everything that could cause delay (don't take into consideration the signal alteration or other effects).

Bandwidth is calculated relative to transmission medium, but usually is EXPRESSED in quantity per time unit. If we are talking about wireless transmission than network bandwidth could mean the frequencies range used for data transmission. BUT, in wired transmissions, bits are also periodic signals, they are sent with a specific frequency. So it is not such a difference between hertz (measurement unit for frequency) and byte (measurement unit for data) - hertz is a rough estimation, how many alternations of a signal in the period of time, while bytes per unit of time means quantity of data. You may need a few cycles to send a bit, you may need a single one, you clearly need some "blank" signals to transmit the start and the end of the bit etc. Network data is sent accordingly to a certain frequency; but a fair chunk of transmitted data is comprised of "CONTROL bits" and other ELEMENTS of control, necessary for proper communications.
It is more "natural" to speak of network bandwidth as the quantity of data processed in the time unit - you talk about frequency in some special cases like when you develop/study a communication protocol, a communication equipment, when you manage or modify such things. It is not "common" language to express network bandwidth as frequency.

Your last point: some ISPs allow for a certain limit expand when the client has such needs. It depends on their bandwidth usage. Another consideration, are you sure that there is not a rounding? MAYBE your reporting program it is not so exact as it claims. And the last comment: between you and the servers where you have transfer are ISP equipments. Sometimes, they are buffering transferred data, and even when there are some "glitches", your transfer seems to go with higher speed because you don't see the transfer between ISP equipment and the remote server, but the transfer (which you requested from the remote server) between your equipment and ISP equipment.

If I explained something in fuzzy mode, please tell me and I will try to refine.

what im trying to tell are something keep disconnecting the internet, and thats why it slow, that could be one reason and answer. It could be a hardware problem, maybe a cooler is down. Also dust poses huge thermal problems. Your computer seems to be a little "old". Have you clean it for dust in time? If not, I suggest you to do so. With the following mention: don't use a vacuum cleaner (DON'T USE A VACUUM CLEANER! YOU CAN DESTROY YOUR COMPUTER BY ELECTRIC DISCHARGES!!!) and don't use liquids. You may use compressed air cans. You store all your important Info on one Device and take it from place to place.  Thanks, but I have a flash drive, but I only go to the office one day a week and I can't wait a week to get something there, so I can either fax it off, or whatever I need to do with it.

I can't email it, because my dsl does not work when I'm dialed into my work computer.  If you can fix that, then maybe I could email it.  But that would be easier to do.  I'll look into the software you suggested.

I read some where (but I can't find the site again) that is was possible to either copy and paste and/or transfer the files between the two computers.  And that's what I was wondering if anyone could help me with.

Today I figured out how to print from my machine to my work machine, but it's a PAIN to do.

Thanks for the help guys. You should use synchronization software IMO. This way you dont have to do anything but turn your machines on. XPPRO has it BUILT in, but I dont like it. Someone the other day pointed me to www.syncback.com. I dont use it myself but others tend to love it.

Solve : Batch Job to select required IP Configuration.?

Answer»

Hi All,

I am one of six laptop users in the office that have in the past been forunate not to have had a NEED to setup our IP Configurations (ie: Using DHCP).  And this suited all as we all use DHCP at home also.

We've relocated to new offices this week and the office network requires all to specify IP Configuration details (IP/Snet/Gway).  Which is now becoming a hassle each morning we arrive at work (setting it up) and in the evenings when we get home (removing SAID entry).

Does any know of or can make suggestion of a batch script that would run at startup and ask which location the user is.  User RESPONDS and the script configures the NIC accordingly.

I'd be willing to give the script a shot if I knew what commands would require EXECUTING.  Unfortunately networking is not one of my strongest points.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Cheers,
Cameron

Several thoughts since you dont have any replies yet, These are just thoughts and some others might have several ideas:
You could setup different network connections, connect to the one you need at home or work.
You could also setup your home system to match your work system, so if your work RANGE is 10.20.30.1 and your home is 192.168.10.1, change your home router to 10.20.30.1 and your static IP address would work at both places.

Solve : Weak connection to wireless network?

Answer»

I am using my laptop in a wireless configuration. When I check the available networks it shows an excellent connection is available to my wireless network. HOWEVER, when I make the ACTUAL connection it is very weak.  Any HELP appreciated. WELL it is normal that the connection is weaker when you are connected then when you check.
Are you sure that you're network just ain't that weak?

Jonas The wireless signal strength indicator in Windows is very-very-very inaccurate.
same thing, I have wireless at home, and sometimes it shows very good but actually its very low, the thing is that I sharing with my friend. If you want a BETTER connection you should go buy a router

Solve : Network setup issues - PC's show under Internet?

Answer»

I am trying to set up my home network (again) using the XP Wizard. I have 3 machines that connect to a Netgear WPN824 router that connects to the internet via a Speedstream 4100 DSL modem. I select the second option on the list - "residential gateway."

After I run the wizard, the machines show up in Network Places under Internet, rather than LAN.  It did this to me last TIME too. I am pretty sure it is just a glitch, and everything checks out OK when I run ShieldsUp! at grc.com.

It is a bit disturbing though to think my shared folders are on the "Internet."

I have run the wizard multiple times and get the same reseult each time, except for once when the LOCAL system showed up under LAN, but the other PC showed up under Internet.

Any ideas?

Also, how does one "delete" a network and start over (besides rerunning the wizard)?

PKYou can't 'delete' a network so to speak.

1) Are you running the wizard individually on each computer or using a disk to go to each computer? As soon as you finish the wizard on the first computer, it gives you the option to do this. While it isn't always NECESSARY, it's something to try to make sure all the settings match up.

2) Are they all on the same workgroup? Double check that.

3) How do the other computers see themselves and the other computers on the network? So far you've only mentioned how one computer sees the others.

The only way to 'delete' a network would be to disassemble it. uninstall the drivers to the NICs, etc. I don't RECOMMEND you do this yet. But as long as the NICs are active, as soon as you plug a cable into the NIC it will attempt to connect to whatever network is there.1. Yes, I am running the wizard individially on each machine. So you think I should try the disk INSTEAD?

2. Yes, same workgroup.

3. Most times, each PC sees itself the same way (on "The Internet").  There was one time where the local PC was listed under LAN, but other PC was listed under "The Internet."

Solve : Problem With Netgear router?

Answer»

I made my wireless router only accept my Nintendo Ds's mac address. How Can I correct this? I have pressed the "Restore Factory Settings" buton but i won't work. How should I correct this? I cannot connect through my computersIt would help if you TOLD us the model number because instructions on how to reset a router varies from brand to brand and even between models. The model number should be listed somewhere on it.Deerpark is right.  And, just punching the reset button doesn't always reset.  Sometimes you must 1. hold the button down for :10 2. reboot the modem 3. a combination thereof.  If the modem is reset, then when you OPEN your browser it will show a setup screen, so I suspect you have net reset it properly.

To be bulletproof with resetting, disconnect power for 30 sec. That doesn't work on all routers Broni. I've got an D-link router that I only use occasionally. When I'm not using it, it's packed away in a closet. It still manages to KEEP its settings even if it goes for months WITHOUT power. A router with flash ram for storage can keep its settings for years. Thanks Deerpark...I didn't realize that. Quote from: JonathanRP on October 27, 2007, 09:09:52 AM

Solve : Advent 9115 Ralink Wireless Lan Card not Exist?

Answer»

Hi I saw a post on the 3 November with the same problem and would like to know how your member solved it. I am setting a laptop up for a friend and am unfamiliar with Vista so I cannot find where to tick the TCP/IP box or where to download the drivers from Ralink.  am going away on Monday so there is some urgency to my request - please. Advent 9115 Ralink Wireless Lan Card not Exist
What EXACTLY do you mean? It doesn't show up in Device Manager? Is it a new card? Any manual?
We need more info. The Laptop is 'Wireless Enabled' but when hovering over the icon on the right bottom for the wireless it says Ralink Wireless Lan Card not exist. I tried to connect wirelessly and it says it is not i think configured. I am not familiar with Vista but use my own laptop wirelessly so am familiar with a wireless connection. In XP all I do is start /connect to /show all connections and then I can right click on my wireless connection and do properties BUT I do not have that option in VISTA. I do find Windows new VISTA software frustrating as this is the second laptop I have set up and struggled. It this is the way Windows is going then I will be staying with XP. Thanks anyway.and sorry no it does not show up in device manager it is a new laptopIs your card turned on?
Most laptops have a SWITCH that allows you to easily turn your wireless card off and on. This switch can be on the side or front of the laptop or could be a key combination on the KEYBOARD (for example, Fn + F2 on many Dell laptops). That's my problem I do not know how to turn it on. It is an Advent and there are no obvious switches but I am sure I am missing something. Can I turn it on in VISTA?Tried the Fn F2 no JOY and the Fn F4 I saw on another Forum and so I tried all of the combinations and hey presto my wireless is switched on BUT i do not know which combination switched it on! Anyway thanks for your help you got me in the right direction and solved my problemWhat brand, and MODEL of your laptop? It is an Advent 9115 and it was the Fn F9 key that turned the wireless on and now I need to work out how to keep it on.

help me guyz. What operating system are you USING?

If you have Windows XP, then TRY this:

Click on Start, Run and type in services.msc.
In the list of Services, SCROLL down to "Server". Double click and make sure that service is enabled. You'll have to SHARE the printer on the local computer, then on your other computers you'll NEED to add that shared printer.  Choose "Network Printer".
