Solve : Wireless says it's connected, but browsers not loading pages.?

Answer»

I've tried a few remedies (including turning off the modem and restarting it, etc), but nothing is working. I pinged the router and it came back with "request timed out" which is the only clue I've found as to what could be wrong. Also: the other computer in my ROOM is connecting, as well as my roommate's xbox, so I'm fairly CERTAIN it isn't the router itself.

A little background: the computer has been out of use for about 6 months, I finally did a malware scan on it and cleaned it up, so it may have been damaged? Not sure...please help me!! Boot up the computer... Open a command prompt and type:

ipconfig

what INFORMATION is displayed? Boot the computer into Safe Mode with Networking, and try browsing the Internet..

If you cannot, ping the router and see if you can get a "REPLY", while in Safe Mode with Networking...1. The output from the "ipconfig" command shows two(?) adaptors:
     a. Ethernet adaptor Local Area Connection
               Media State: Media DISCONNECTED

     b. Ethernet adaptor Stephanie

2. Do you have two ethernet adaptors on that computer?

Solve : 56K help?

Answer»

I'm getting a error code when I dial out saying I have no dail tone but I definately have dail tone, you can hear it when it tries to dail ou,it just doesn't seem to connect for some odd reason. The computer is less than 6 months old.If you could POST the error code that wud be handy but here is the MICROSOFT Knowledgebase article on dealing with your problem in xp but it might be similar to Vista, post the error message if you can mate. The error code is 680,no dail tone, but when you try and connect, you clearly have a dail tone that is clear as glass,I've done everything I could with my limited knowledge of the modem system,I've un-installed and re-installed,did a diagnostic as well.

We did have lighting in the area yesterday so I'm beginning to believe that some stray voltage may have shot up the line and frazzled the modem, but nothing else was touched though.

My computer is a HP s5107c desktop running WINDOWS Vista with service PACK 1,the modem is a Agere Systems PCI-SV92EX Soft Modem.

I'm going to shop for modems just in case! Sorry, forgot to post the link. Here it is.

Solve : Beefed up my wireless security - now outlook won't send receive?

Answer»

Hey hi,

I recently secured my home wireless network connection by password protecting the westell 327W router. Everything works fine (Web, printers, ETC) from all ends of the house except the errors at outlook when I send/receive.
These are the error messages that come up.
Task 'pop.gmail - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC0D) : 'Unable to find the e-mail server. Please verify the server information in your account properties.'

Task 'pop.gmail.com - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x80042108) : 'Outlook is unable to connect to your incoming (POP3) e-mail server. If you continue to receive this message, CONTACT your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

I ran through google and microsoft troubleshooter which suggested updates (of course, done) and a a telnet test, which will check that your computer can contact our SMTP servers. It failed that telnet test so... that means...

The error you're experiencing indicates that your network is blocking access to Gmail's POP servers.

Any idea how to make my outlook TALK to the gmail servers through my security?

Thanks, JCI'm using Win XP by the way. Outlook is 2003.Hello,

Securing your wireless router with a password is not necessarily the cause of your issue. That password just prevents anyone from getting on your wireless network without a password. It doesn't have anything to do with your outlook messages. However, if you can't go to any sites from this pc that is having issues then it may be the problem. Just to check disable the password and see if you can send & receive mail without problems.

The problem may be one of the following:

In securing your wireless router with a password you may have also enabled its firewall by accident. You'll have to check your firewall configuration for this.

Have you installed any new firewalls or anti-virus programs or updated them?

Your account settings & email server settings are wrong. Re-enter them just to make sure.

The server may have had a problem at the time you were TRYING to connect. However, I'm sure you've tried to connect again lately right?

Once you've checked these THINGS reply with answers so either I or someone else can help you further.

PS - if you have windows xp then you should say xp in your profile instead of windows 2000. Quote from: drivenbywhat on March 05, 2010, 01:01:57 PM

Yes, that's it.
It took me quite a while to gather the gumption to mess with the router settings myself - I had an IT friend set it up before - but this neccesitated my fuddling with it.
Now I know how to fuddle!

-Entered the routers address into my browsers address bar and it opened the settings for the router, which allows me to change the firewall settings.. seems easy and simple now that I've done it.
Thanks.

Solve : linking routers?

Answer»

Hi,

Can we link 2 routers together? Reason is I live in a new apartment and there is only 1 telephone/cable socket in the bedroom. My bedroom is quite small so it'd be quite difficult to put the printer in my room. The only place I can put my printer is out in the lounge where there is no telephone/cable socket.

But since I have 2 routers, is it possible to connect my room router to the phone/cable socket then connect via wireless to my lounge router which is connected via USB to my printer? Would I be able to set up wireless printer that way? If so, how? Any references I can follow?

Thank you guys very muchWe understand what you want to do, but are not sure about what equipment you have.
Getting two router to join together on wireless is not as easy as it sounds.
Which routers do you have? Some can not run Ad-Hoc.
Is the printer wireless? Is it network compatible?

Is this a laptop computer with a built-in wireless?A lot of times it does not depend on the hardware, but more the firmware. Check your WebGUI for your product. I know on many of the newer firmwares for most vendors (2+ years or newer) have RIP which allowed two routers to communicate.

(This is an example using Linksys Firmware)

You will have to manually setup the route, if you do not know how to do this properly (IP addressing / subnetting schemes,) I suggest you get / look up a subnetting calculator.

1 ) Log into your WebGUI
2 ) In the 'Setup' TAB: Click the 'Advanced Routing' subcategory
3 ) Disable NAT (You can't use NAT in conjunction with RIP)
4 ) Enable RIP
5 ) Enter the Destination Address (IP Address of the router it's connecting to)
6 ) Enter the Subnet Mask for the network
7 ) Enter the IP address of the Gateway (Either the router you're connecting to, or the router you're setting up itself.)
8 ) Select the interface for the Destination Address

Then click save settings. If you still need help, there is a little 'Help' link towards the top right for Linksys firmware, the that basically lists the steps I said above. I use DD-WRT and it just displays the help file on the right side. I'm assuming if that was the case you wouldn't need much help.I have a inbuilt wireless laptop.

2 wireless routers (1 with usb port, 1 without usb port) - model -

1. NETGEAR DB834G v2 (without usb)
2. NETGEAR DB834Gu v5 (with usb)

That's basically all I have.

Please advise

ThanksThose routers are easy touse.
Both are found here:
http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/family/a_id/1288
The documentation tells how to get into the setup for each router.
Follow the directions give by hodges91Thanks I'll give it a try.

The NAT is what translates the ISP's IP into the local network IP right? If I disable that will my router still feed me my local IPs?

And what is RIP?

Thanks

For the Net gear DG834G routers:

Quote

Static and Dynamic Routing with TCP/IP, VPN pass-through (IPSec, L2TP, PPTP), NAT, UDP, RIP, PPPoE, PPPoA, Classical IP, DNS, DHCP (client & server)

These are protocols the router can handle.
TCP/IP is the common protocol.
The DSL modem will use PPTP or something like that.
NAT is not always needed for some network tasks. S see this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_address_translation

But you need to read over the documentation and the setup guides provided by Net gear. You need to understand what it means to 'reset' the router/modem. And you have to understand what it means to change the base IP address of either outer itself. At least one of them has to have a different IP for the local network.
ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/DG834Gv5_SM_31Mar08.pdf

It should not be necessary to use static address on you PCs.
I am willing to help you, but I have limited ability to study long documentation. As for me, just change a few things until I get it to work. When I tie two routers together I cripple the closer one by turning of its DCHP and giving it an IP inside the range the front router or gateway wants for DCHP Doing that I can not use the WAN port. But it works. In EFFECT, the router is like a hub.

To tie two routers using the WAN port you must study the documentation for advanced users. Or just go to the NETGEAR FORUM and look around.
http://forum1.netgear.com/

EDIT: Simple answer. One router will have all its features set in the normal way It is the one that hooks to the internet. Then second will provide connection for additional PCs and will have some things disabled.

Solve : I believe I encountered incompetence from AT&T today.?

Answer»

While helping a friend, named MARGIE, who recently switched from dialup internet access with a local ISP to AT&T's DSL service, I had conversation directly with one of AT&T's support techs (ST). She wanted to get her email account set up in Windows Mail (Vista). During the conversation, I asked the ST for the settings for a POP mail account in Windows Mail. He told me the settings and I jotted them down. I then asked him whether this info is on their website. He said it is not and added, "You can Google for it", meaning use Google to find the info from some other source. Now, wouldn't you think a large ISP such as AT&T would have that on their website?

Before I talked to the ST, Margie had talked to him and said she wanted to change the password for her email account from the one originally issued when she first subscribed to AT&T's DSL service. He said her modem would need to be reset for the new password, the one she wanted to use for email, before she would be able to get a connection to the mail server with her email client. He guided her through this procedure, which involved accessing a modem control panel by opening Internet Explorer and typing 192.168.1.254 in the address box, which opened the control panel, and proceeding to change the password for the modem.

I haven't heard of such a procedure being necessary. It's not something I've ever had to do with my DSL service (different ISP). If what he said is correct, then she would need to access this modem control panel any time she wanted to changed the password for her email account and change it to the same password she would be using for email account.

I'm thinking this is sheer incompetence. Anybody ever heard of this procedure being necessary? I have AT&T DSL(formerly BellSouth). This is the problem with the POP mail settings. AT&T has merged with so many companies that not even AT&T knows where the settings can be found online although they are still there. There are different settings depending on which area you are in for the company they bought out. For instance my mail settings are still mail.bellsouth.net even though my ISP is now AT&T. A google search for "mail settings bellsouth" would actually be my best option since it is the first result. Try to find it on at&t's SITE. After about 15 pages you may find it. When they started using yahoo for their mail server it really screwed things up to get the mail settings. Before that I could still go to bellsouth.net and they were LISTED there. Now when i go to bellsouth.net I go straight to some screwed up yahoo page. The password for the modem to connect is the same as my email password. Whether or not it has to remain that way, I have no idea. I think pretty much all ISP customer support is pretty much useless. Half the time their final response is "I don't know what's going on, I think you're going to need to call microsoft to get that working" .You need a tech support GUY who actually knows what he's doing.

One that will admit that they would like to send you a actual technician to your house to help you sort out your problem if he can't help you directly via phone.

Changing AT&T account password changes your email password (if you have services merged, like ATT.net mail and Yahoo mail accounts) Quote from: 2x3i5x on January 26, 2010, 11:43:21 PM

Changing AT&T account password changes your email password (if you have services merged, like ATT.net mail and Yahoo mail accounts)

I think I know what you're talking about... My 2Wire Gateway requires a PPPoE password (for service authentication), which also happens to be the password for my eMail account...

soybean I'm actually in the middle of setting up a Windows Mail account, but it's been so long since I logged into the account assigned to me that I don't remember the password (I even forgot the answer to my security question) and I'm going to have to fax verification to AT&T and wait for a phone call for them to reset my password When they reset my password, I'll let you know how whether they require changing the modem password... They will probably reset your password, which will disconnect your service, then they will snail mail your password and 3 days later you will be online again.
If we don't see you for a few days we know what happened. When I talked to AT&T, they described the procedure for resetting the password. One option was cancelling my service and starting another one (which means I'd be offline for a few days) or, faxing my ID and proof of address to them and waiting for a call.. I believe when I receive the call, they will simply tell me what the new password is, or give me a new temporary one to use for login, and change after I log in.... From what I gathered, the "fax" option doesn't include being offline, which is why I'm choosing to fax instead..

Hey guys, thanks for the replies.

Yes, I suspect the POP mail settings were the only problem. I still doubt changing a modem password is necessary. I got POP mail working for her in Windows Mail. Is this case, the settings were:
Incoming mail (POP3): pop.att.yahoo.com
Outgoing mail (SMTP): smtp.att.yahoo.com
Server port numbers:
   Outgoing (SMTP): 465
   Incoming (POP3): 995

Sounds like a lot of unnecesary hassle. With my ISP (CenturyLink.net, formerly Embarq), I can logon onto my account settings via their website and change my password (that applies to my email account). Then, since I use a POP email client, I would, of course, need to also change the password in my email client, and that's it. The modem couldn't care less about all this. If I happen to forget the password, they have a button for Forgot password? Or, I could click on a Chat for help button and get assistance via a chat session. I also have a "forget password?" link I can click on, but in my case it is no good because they use a security question/answer to authenticate me, that I set myself a while back, and I didn't bother (which was stupid) to write it down somewhere...

If it comes down to having to change the modem password, I'll ask them why it is necessary and see if I can get a straight answer out of them... I doubt it will be easy though. Any time I get help from them, the ST is always someone with a heavy foreign accent who I can barely understand, so by the END of the call session, I'm generally just happy I made it through the call.. UPDATE: I intended to post this sooner but I still want to post some additional information on this issue.

EEVIAC and I exchanged some private messages on this issue. He was actively dealing with setting up an AT&T DSL account and got the same instructions from AT&T that I received when helping someone their new AT&T DSL account. To recap, AT&T told him the POP email password had to be the same as the password used in the modem control panel which is accessed via web browser.

Like me, EEVIAC thought it made no sense and was probably incorrect. I said this could easily be tested by simply changing the password for the email account (requires logging on to the account via webmail to change the password and then also changing it in Outlook Express or other email client). EEVIAC tried that and his test confirmed that the modem password has nothing to do with the email account password; there's no connection between them.

Solve : Internet is connected but server not found when trying to browse the web?

Answer»

Hello. I moved my computer downstairs and it will no LONGER bring up a web page on IE or Mozilla Firefox.

Computer:
Dell desktop
windows xp pro version 2002
service pack 3
intel pentium 4 cpu 2.80 GHz

I have cable internet using a modem from Comcast. My wireless ROUTER is a Linksys and I use a Wireless-G USB Adapter. Upstairs I used the wireless connection to be on the internet. Now that I have moved the computer downstairs I would like to connect it via an ethernet cable to the wireless router. (This worked just fine on the computer that I had at this desk until yesterday.)

The Local Area Connection SHOWS as Connected at 100 Mbps. When I try to browse to a web page it says "Server not found."

I have rebooted the modem, router, and computer. Other computers are working perfectly (one via wireless and the other is via ethernet cable). I have changed the jack that I am plugging into on the wireless modem. I have checked everything I can think of to check and I am stumped. I would really appreciate any help anyone can offer on this.
Thank you,
Jackie

**ETA: I just plugged the ethernet cable that is hooked into the desktop in QUESTION into my laptop and it connected to the internet. It is clearly something to do with the desktop but what could it be?1. "ipconfig". From a Command Prompt on the desktop in question, enter the following commands (without the quotes).
     a. "ipconfig"
     b. "ipconfig /all" ; note the "space" preceding "/all".
     c. "ipconfig /all > IpcfgAll.txt" ; note space before "/all", ">", and "IpcfgAll.txt"

All three commands display information about the TCP/IP configuration of the desktop. The first one displays summary of the most important information. Second command displays "all" the data. Third command redirects all the data into a "text" file within current directory from which command is executed. (If desired, you may specify your own complete file name path for that text file to store it where ever you wish.)

Please "post" the output of the third command in your reply. You may use "notepad" to view the contents of the output data (and cut and paste from there).

2. Command Prompt Window. To access a command prompt window: Start -> Run -> TYPE "cmd" without the quotes and press <Enter> key. Thanks for the offer of help dahlarbear.
The IT guy at work had me change the TCP/IP DNS numbers and that fixed the problem.

Anyway, before this thread get's locked, you might want to look at the FORUM rules. We don't help circumvent school restrictions. Note I specifically say "school" not "company" since there is no way a person who can hold down a job has the people skills of a screwdriver and a way with words that is about equal to a stoat.

"Shirley" THOUGHT they were responding to "Millkman's" response to their "POP up messaging" thread; also in the Networking subforum.

It put the entire thread into a "death" spiral... Way to go Shirley! Four more and you'll be an "ACE". (And it only took a single shot - now that's marksmanship!)

Solve : No share tab for hard drive?

Answer»

Hi Can someone assist with a fix for missing sharing and security tab when right clicking either of my 2 hard drives. I have several xp machines and this is the only one with missing sharing tab. The share and security tab is visible on folders in both drives but not the drives. Its an xpsp3 machine with 2 500gb sata drives. There is no share tab for the optical drives either, but im not CONCERNED with this. I am logged on as administrator, and I can network using net share, but im curious as to the reason for the loss of the share tabs. Any ideas???javascript:replaceText('%20???',%20document.forms.postmodify.message);Have you unchecked the "use simple FILE sharing" option in Control Panel/Folder Options?

Sharing the whole drive is not a good idea.
But he real administrator can do it. The real administrator is the one whose name is administrator. You see him when you boot in safe mode.

hi, in normal mode there is only one a/c me and its administrator, no guest a/cs no nothing. in safe mode it shows my a/c and a separate one for administrator. there is no one on my network who will cause problems if the drives are shared. as i said i can share the drives with net use, but id really like my sharing an security menu option back? thanksFor starters, Windows XP Home Edition does not come with NTFS permissions and the security tab is a feature of NTFS permissions so you cannot assign permissions to drives... Why you are getting a security tab on folders within the drive, I don't know.. perhaps someone else could help..

In the mean time, you should at least be able to share the drives..
Make sure the file and folder sharing is enabled in the network adapter's properties.. Control Panel>Network Connections>right-click on your network adapter and select "properties" On the general tab, make sure you see "file and folder sharing" in the Windows and that there is a check in the box next to it..

If it is not there, you'll have to install the "file and folder sharing" protocol..

For starters, Windows XP Home Edition does not come with NTFS permissions

Not 100% accurate- Windows XP Home's implementation of NTFS is 100% accurate; for example, you can see encrypted and compressed files that have already been stored on a disk- you cannot access the encrypted files, but I believe you can access the compressed files. And the permissions are 100% intact, as well- the GUI interface is crippled is all.

For starters, Windows XP Home Edition does not come with NTFS permissions and the security tab is a feature of NTFS permissions so you cannot assign permissions to drives... Why you are getting a security tab on folders within the drive, I don't know.. perhaps someone else could help..

Hi, File and folder sharing is indeed enabled.
What I can tell you is my 3 other win xp machines all have on option to share a drive when right clicking the drive, this machine used to have that feature as well but has now changed. No new accounts have been created. I can share the drive with "net" but just wondering how to get my sharing and security option tab back???
Thanks

hm. this is a tricky one.

Go back into your adapter properties, highlight the "file and folder sharing" and click on "uninstall".

After it uninstalls, click on, "install", highlight the "services" option to install a service, and select "file and folder sharing for windows". This will reinstall it.. Restart the computer and see if you have a sharing tab on your drives.. Quote from: EEVIAC on March 07, 2010, 06:01:23 PM

Hi, I may have misled you in a previous post, when I said "file and folder sharing" the item that is ticked is "File and printer sharing for microsoft networks" Is this the same thing? I have just updated the driver for my onboard lan connection and uninstalled and reinstalled file and printer sharing for microsoft networks. Are we speaking about the same thing?

Unfortunately the only change is my network connections from the problem machine are gone, ill fix it with net share, but there is still no sharing and security tab?
ThanksThis is PROBABLY a permissions issue. Although you say your account is an "ADMIN" it is just a member of the admin group not the "admin" account. You proved this by saying when you boot to safe mode there is your account & the admin account. Log in as the admin account and try sharing the drive. If you don't have the password to the admin account or you don't know how to log in with it do the following:

At the log in screen press ctrl+alt+del twice. This will get you the classic log in screen. Type "administrator" for the user name and leave the password blank and press enter. Quote from: drivenbywhat on March 07, 2010, 10:01:54 PM

If i log on in safe mode as administrator, or my account its the same result. ie right click drives in my comp there is no menu item for sharing and security. I did download and install a file that allowed me to get the security tab back in properties where I can view permissions, but I didnt want to play changing things. I did consider changing permissions to everyone for all users, but was advised its dangerous to. The machine has a software firewall as well as a router, and the only people who will have access to it are trusted.

IT might be that the sharing tab is simply not enabled properly as an extension.

download ShExView:

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview_setup.exe

Install and Run it.

Once it loads, look for an item titled "Shell Extensions For Sharing"

If it's Disabled- Enable it.

If it is already enabled, Right click, and select "properties" (Not "File Properties"). the third item from the bottom, titled "File Extensions" should read "Directory, Drive"

In this case, it sounds like yours might only read Directory.

If it does only say "Directory"- try this:

Open Notepad and paste the following:

Code: [Select]Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\Sharing]
="{f81e9010-6ea4-11ce-a7ff-00aa003ca9f6}"

Select File-Save and choose File Type "All Files(*.*)" and save it as a .REG file- for example, "sharedrive.reg"

Locate the file on your desktop or in an explorer window and double-click to merge the contents.

IF you still cannot see the sharing tab for drives, try rebooting. Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 08, 2010, 01:36:39 AM

Hi, Thank you so much, I installed shellexview and as you suggested in properties/shell extension for sharing, it listed as directory, as well as not disabled. I copied the reg entry, rebooted and HEY in drive properties I now have a tab for sharing that works. It is very pleasing to RECEIVE advice from someone who knows the fix. No complaints but does it matter if I now have 2 shell extensions for sharing in shellexview?
They both point to the same file of the same size and date, and both list directory only?

What a nice piece of kit (shellexview)

Many many thanks for your concise response

Solve : NO LAN connection/xbox 360 bridge connection?

Answer»

I need to bridge an xbox 360 connection with the LAN to play xboix live through my computer, but when i go into my networks, there is no LAN. What is the problem? We know what a 360 is but we don't know what computer uyopu have. Many COMPUTERS do not have a LAN connection. And even when the do, it has to be set up the first time.
Have you already read this material:
http://www.xbox.com/en-us/pcsetup/xboxnetwork.htm
If that does not help, come back here and we will go STEP by step.
Yes i have already read that material, and it has not helped me. We have a Dell 2400 with a Linksys network adapterSo we suppose you are doingb it like this:

But for some reason you do not see the X Box in the network, but you do see the router. Is that right?
This X Box gets into the internet OK?
The computer gets into the Internet OK?
Yhe only [problem is the X Box and the PC can not see each other. Right?
I am hooked from the xbox to the computer desktop, which gets internet wirelessly, with an ethernet cable. And yes, I can see my internet connectedNow we see the PICTURE. You should tie the X Box into the router with a ethernet cable. But if you want to bo from X Bos to the PC, you may need a crossover cable. Take a look at Network connections. The wireless will be OK and the Ethernet will have a RED X on it or a yellow triangle. That is when you have the wrong cable. Standard Ethernet cable is for going from a client to a router.

While on that point, new routers are "smart" can can fix the cable connection. Booth NICs used in PCs are STILL the same.

You can run Ethernet cable over a 100 meters, about 300 plus feet, and still get 100mbps

Also, your X Box can do better with a direct connection to the router.

But it should work with a crossover cabvle. Onace you got that, you need to bridge the two c onnections.

In Windows XP, Stgart > Connect to > show all connections, bridge connection

But if you don't have two connections to bridge, you will see:

http://www.wellesley.edu/Computing/FileSharing/Windows/facstaffxp.html

the answer was helpful but this GIVES the normal file sharing across the network in all workgroups but can files in aworkgroup denied acess from other workgroups?U can always encrypt the file and have a password to access them. What u r describing is more along a Sever/Client relationship. Win Win XP Home or Pro really doesn't offer much help in this area.
Going back to the link provide by EEVIAC.

Section II Step 1 select the Do Not share this folder option. Do this on the folders u do not want to share.
Another thing u can try is:
Go>My Computer Rt click the C: >Properties>Sharing. U will see a warning about the risk of sharing, select it. U should see a option/box that states Make this folder Private.

One solution is a Linux box. The PC doesn't have to have the power of a full server, but u can still control permissions, right, access control to users. Now a days Linus flavors are ez to configure.
Wrie back and let us known if this works for. Quote from: wizzy on March 01, 2010, 11:41:02 PM
the answer was helpful but this gives the normal file sharing across the network in all workgroups but can files in aworkgroup denied acess from other workgroups?

I believe this can be done in a roundabout fashion.

Each PC has a name in the workgroup- for example, my small network consists of my computer "TERATRON" and my laptop, "SATELLITE".

my TERATRON PC has several shares- Only SATELLITE can access them. The KEY was in the security settings- I added SATELLITE//bc_programming as a full access user on the share. With more PCs, you could make it so the shared items in each workgroup are shared only within the same workgroup by adding ACLs to each shared item for all the other PCs in the workgroup.

This is sort of a "brute force" approach to the problem, but if you have 5 or fewer PCs it's probably doable. Why do you need to share the internet access though your machine? Why not just get a ROUTER?

Solve : Wireless Network not connected...No IP address?

Answer»

Hello,

I'm looking for some guidance.
I use windows xp. I use a secure wireless connection that has been consistently good for a long time. Recently I am having trouble connecting to the router. When I try to connect the details say the IP address is all zeros and the same for the subnet MASK.
My computer is detailed as "Wireless connection 2"... there is another computer on the wireless network (the one I'm using now) it works just FINE IP address , Subnet mask and default gateway.
When I click to repair the connection on wireless connection2 a pop-up saying could not repair due to IP address appears.
Is there anything I can do?

Thank you for your time.

Quinny1. Operating SYSTEM. Which version and service pack level are you using? (e.g. Windows XP Pro SP3)?

2. Device Manager. For the wireless network adapter, what does it say for "Device status"?

To access: Start -> Run -> type "devmgmt.msc" without quotes, then press -> double-click "Network Adapters" category -> right-click "wireless" adapter then select "Properties" -> General tab -> locate "Device status" subsection.

3. Ipconfig. From a COMMAND Prompt window use "ipconfig /all" command (without quotes) to view the TCP/IP CONFIGURATION parameters assigned, if any. Now use "ipconfig /all > IpNoConnect.txt" to redirect output to text file and "post" its contents in your next reply.

4. Ping. From a Command Prompt window use "ping 127.0.0.1 > PingOut.txt" to redirect output to text file. Please "post" its contents to your next reply.

5. DHCP/Static IP assignment.
      a. Does your computer use "static" or DHCP for IP assignment?
      b. Do any of the other computers on your network use "static" IP assignment?

To access: Start -> Run -> type "ncpa.cpl" without quotes, then press -> right-click desired connection icon -> Status (note Connection Status) -> Properties button -> select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" -> Properties button -> General tab -> Is "Obtain an IP address automatically" selected? (means use DHCP).

     c. What was the "Connection Status" for your computer? Quote

Greetings All - After many searches and waiting on HP to respond, I thought I would try you on what I THINK is an HP problem. I have a pentium 4 xp home sp3 DESKTOP that was connected to an hp photosmart C4600 series printer working fine. I bought a new hp win 7 desktop and the printer is now connected to the win 7 comp. I have successfully networked the 2 computers (dynex 4 port wired router). I can SEE each computer from the other and transfer files between. I ran the xp print wizard - found the printer on the network and installed it. When I go into printer PROPERTIES and print a test page I get the following window. (printer works fine from the win7 comp). Thanx in advance for any help.So the HP is using USB?
Put the HP back on the XP machine and make Win7 FIND it on the network. It nay take awhile for HP to solve this one.Thanx for your quick reply - I tried to include a screen shot of the pop-up window (copied to paint 2.87 mb file too large ?) I will try what you suggest - may be tommorrow - thx again.Use JPG for screenshots

Solve : Connecting to wireless outside of the router location room. Troubleshooting.?

Answer» HELLO everyone

I have Sky broadband (the best one they offer) with the new black netgear router (with no arial). The router is set up by the TV in the lounge and in that room the speed and quality is fantastic, iplayer etc.. all working with no issue via wifi. However in my bedrooms (in a flat so all on the same floor) the signal is not there to pick up. I know the laptop is fine as soon as I go in the lounge it pings back on.

The distance is about 30m from the router to laptop and through 5 walls. Was wondering what advice anyone could give me to IMPROVE the signal and get it working. Moving the router more than about 5 meteres form where it is is not an option. I've heard mixed reports of boosters but was wondering if people had had a similar problem and how they fixed it.

Kind regards
TomI have use a Netgear wireless extender with very promising results. I can say anything bad about his product. It has work as promise. Follow the link

What is the possibility of passing a small wire through the five walls?
For a moderate distance, UHF will follow a wire with loss of 10 to 20 db.
You said there is no aerial on the router. Is there an antenna output? If so you can probably use a fairly cheap antenna. Can you exchange it for one with built in antennas. Not having an external antenna has to be a limiting factor for distance. You said there is no aerial on the router. It must have an internal antenna or it wouldn't work at all. Is there an antenna output? If so you can probably use a fairly cheap antenna. Can you exchange it for one with built in antennas. Not having an external antenna has to be a limiting factor for distance.
There is no antenna output so I'm assuming it's internal. This does mean I can't add anything though which seems a shame. I'm going to try moving the router slightly more central and then go for the network wireless extender to see if I can get any joy I think. The netgear wireless extender gets horrible reviews on Amazon. Can anyone suggest an alternative? I feel like I'm getting no-where and don't want to buy a load of kit that doesn't work!

Unfortunately drilling holes through all the walls is not an option at this point in time.Is this an option?

1. Just curious. Have you tested to see how many walls it will go through (one, two, three, four, five)?

2. Powerline is an option, but I have no personal experience with it.

Solve : Wireless home network setup? Confusing to me!?

Answer»

I would REALLY appreciate some help setting up a new wireless home network. I've tried and tried, and the best I can come up with is "Limited CONNECTIVITY" with no printer, file, or internet SHARING. My setup is a bit strange... I'll try to explain.

PC #1 is a new HP Pavillion desktop with a built-in wireless network card and external antenna. It came this way... it's not an add-on. This computer is using Vista 64-bit. This computer has the internet connection, which comes from an Alltel wireless USB card. (We live in the country, and do not want dial-up internet, so this is our only option. DSL isn't available where we live.)

PC #2 is an older Toshiba Satellite laptop with a built-in wireless network card and internal antenna. It came this way, and is also not an add-on. This computer is using XP (with service pack 2, I think).

A computer guru friend of mine said that I can't directly network the 2 computers together, although I tried that and seemed to have some connectivity. Still no printer, file, or internet sharing, however. So I took my friend's advice and bought a new LINKSYS wireless-G network router. It is connected to the HP Pavillion desktop computer, and I can get my laptop to find the wireless network at times (after changing multiple settings that I don't really understand), but can't get it set up properly.

I'm wondering if the built-in network card on the HP Pavillion is messing things up with the wireless router, since they are so close together (actually connected to the same computer), and/or if I need to bridge the connection or something. (?) I'm not computer illiterate, but know NOTHING about networks, really.

The USB wireless internet service we have also presents a problem with the Linksys automatic setup software. It tries to search for broadband/DSL internet connected to the network plug on the router, which we of course don't have. So I'm wondering if this will work at all. I've played around with IP addresses, security settings, etc, etc, until I'm blue in the face and frustrated.

All I really want to do is share printers, files, and my internet connection. I'm tired of running up and down stairs with a USB flash drive every time I want to print something or swap files between computers. And to use the internet on my laptop PC, I have to unplug it from the desktop PC which prevents other people in the house from having internet access.

Can it really be this difficult?! Surely it's simpler than I'm making it... but I really, really don't understand all of the static IP address, DHCP, ad-hoc/infastructure, private/public, WEP/WPA technology. Makes it very hard for me to know what I'm doing.

I'd appreciate ANY help I can get... I really don't want to hire someone to come in and set this up for me. THANKS IN ADVANCE for any help at all!

Clint

First to clear things up, you can connect two computers wirelessly without a wireless router. This is called adhoc mode. This setup may be your best bet. Check to link because explain it here can be tedious.

     a. Internet connection. Through Alltel wireless USB card.
     b. LAN connection? Through built-in wireless network card with external antenna.
     c. Is there also a built-in or add-on "wired" ethernet network card?

2. Toshiba Satellite laptop with Windows XP (possibly SP2).
     a. LAN connection? Through built-in wireless network card with internal antenna.

3. Printer. Need to know where and how it connects to your network...
     a. Is printer directly cabled to a port on the desktop?
     b. Is printer directly cabled to a port on the laptop?
     c. Or, is printer directly cabled to LAN port of router (ethernet switch port)?
     d. Or, does printer use a "wireless" connection?

4. Linksys wireless-G network router.
     a. Presumably consists of the following subcomponents:
          (1) One port router (one WAN port)
          (2) Ethernet switch (four LAN ports)
          (3) Wireless access point
     b. How and where does desktop connect? (wired LAN port or wireless access point)
     c. How and where does laptop connect? (wired LAN port or wireless access point)

5.  Recommendation(s):
     a. Desktop. Any LAN "wireless" connection settings must match configuration of router (if using infrastructure mode).
          (1) On the Internet connection, enable Microsoft's Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) function. ICS is not included with Windows Vista Starter.
          (2) For the Internet connection, enable a "firewall" to filter input (and possibly output) internet traffic.
          (3) For the Internet connection, disable "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks".
          (4) If possible used "wired" LAN connection to ethernet switch, otherwise "wireless" connection to wireless access point subcomponent of router.
          (5) Disable firewall on LAN connection while you're troubleshooting or setting up the network. If desired, you can "enable" it after you get network working.

     b. Laptop. Any "wireless" connection settings must match configuration of router (if using infrastructure mode).
          (1) If possible use "wired" LAN connection to ethernet switch, otherwise "wireless" connection to wireless access point subcomponent of router.
          (2) Configure TCP/IP on the local area connection to "Obtain an IP address automatically".
          (3) Disable firewall on LAN connection while you're troubleshooting or setting up the network. If desired, you can "enable" it after you get network working.

     c. RouterFORGET the automatic setup software. Manually configure the router... If you're not using the WAN port you don't need to be concerned with any of its settings (e.g. firewall, internet access restrictions). Suggest you use wireless in "infrastructure" mode.
          (1) Disable the LAN DHCP function of home router. Local IP address will be assigned from ICS host computer's DHCP function.
          (2) Disable "wireless" security while troubleshooting or setting up the network. You should "enable" it after you get basic network functions working.

Wow... now that's helpful stuff! THANKS!!! I downloaded Cisco Network Magic and got the computers networking (sharing files and printers), but not sharing the internet connection. I really don't want to use Network Magic if I don't absolutely need to, so I've written down ALL of the settings and will try to make it work without using Network Magic. When I have time.

I think my internet connection coming from a wireless USB card (on the desktop PC) is my problem. It doesn't run through the router (through the broadband internet connection jack, like it's designed to do), so the router doesn't seem to know it's there.

Each computer has a printer directly connected (USB connection) to it. I got that problem solved, however. The router has 4 network jacks plus a jack for the broadband connection. The settings page allows you to set it as either a router or a gateway. (And I'm not exactly sure what the difference is there.)

Anyhow, thanks SO MUCH for your help! Nice, detailed, and outlined VERY clearly! THANKS!!!!!!!!!I have a great connection now, and I'm sharing files and printers WONDERFULLY in both directions. I have internet on my desktop PC (of course... that's where the connection originates), but my network map (Cisco Network Magic) shows no internet connection from the router. And my laptop cannot access the internet. I'll go through everything again and again. I've gotta get this working... getting frustrating.

Thanks for all the help so far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5.  Recommendation(s):
     a. Desktop. Any LAN "wireless" connection settings must match configuration of router (if using infrastructure mode).
          (1) On the Internet connection, enable Microsoft's Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) function. ICS is not included with Windows Vista Starter. Did that. Still no internet on my laptop.
          (2) For the Internet connection, enable a "firewall" to filter input (and possibly output) internet traffic.
          (3) For the Internet connection, disable "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks". Did that. Can't tell any difference. Still no internet connection on my laptop.

Did that. No change.
          (3) Disable firewall on LAN connection while you're troubleshooting or setting up the network. If desired, you can "enable" it after you get network working.

     c. Router. Forget the automatic setup software.
Think I did that... not sure. Router settings are kind of confusing.
          (2) Disable "wireless" security while troubleshooting or setting up the network. You should "enable" it after you get basic network functions working.

6.  Reference(s):
     a. Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in Microsoft Windows
     b. ICS Host Computer Setup – Windows Vista
     c. What is Wireless Network
     d. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Setting-up-a-home-network
     e. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/default.mspx. See links within "Network How-To Center" subsection.

In order to share the Internet Connection, you need to "first" setup Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on that "connection". This ICS "host" computer is now responsible for the TCP/IP configuration of your entire network, and will assign IP addresses to the other computers upon resquest. The other computers now need to be configured to get their addresses from the computer "hosting" the Internet Connection. Their TCP/IP configuration "should" be set to "Obtain an IP address automatically".

You must ensure the home router does not get in the way, by disabling its "DHCP function".

See ICS Host Computer Setup – Windows Vista.

Since you're not using the "router" subcomponent of the home router, I don't think it matters whether its setup as a "router" or 'gateway". You're only using the ethernet "switch" and "wireless access point" subcomponents of the router which I believe are independent of the "router" subcomponent.

If laptop also contains a "wired" network adaptor (ethernet connection), see if it works when cabled directly to a LAN port on the router's "switch".

Verify the TCP/IP configuration parameters that have been assigned for your LAN network connections:
     a. Desktop "wired" LAN connection should be:
          (1) IP_Address: 192.168.0.1
          (2) Subnet_Mask: 255.255.255.0

     b. Laptop
          (1) IP_Address: 192.168.0.x (where "x" is not "0, 1, or 255".
          (2) Subnet_Mask: 255.255.255.0

While I don't think it should get in the way, also check the TCP/IP configuration for the LAN side of the "router" component of the Linksys network router. If it conflicts with either that of the "desktop" or "laptop", change its IP address.
     c. Home Router
          (1) IP_Address:
          (2) Subnet_Mask:

Solve : OE & Yahoo mail, SNTP is hard to do.?

Answer»

OE & Yahoo mail, SNTP is hard to do.
I got it to work, but not the way I would like.
POP3 works OK, using my own mail server, in this case mail.geek9pm.com which works in a normal way
My AT&T DSL documentation says I must use only their SMP serve, not my own.
Theirs is either smtp.yahoo.com or smtp.att.yahoo.com ad I can not find an authoritative sources to confirm this clearly. The AT&T documentation is FUBB.
It seems that OE will not remember my password for the SMTP.

So, my question is this:
Anybody out there know what works right for SMTP using AT&T DSL? Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 18, 2010, 05:53:38 PM

So, my question is this:
Anybody out there know what works right for SMTP using AT&T DSL?

What ports are you using?

I'm using smtp.att.yahoo.com on port 465..

and pop.att.yahoo.com on port 995..

They're apparently not into using the default ports 110 (pop) and 25 (smtp)...
POP or SMTP doesn't work with Yahoo!, as far as I know, unless you have a Pro account. Quote from: kpac on February 20, 2010, 04:30:47 AM

He's talking about an AT&T DSL line, that uses yahoo eMail services. I use the same service he does and pop/smtp works fine with it, but not if your using a free web based yahoo account.

AT&T and Yahoo merged.. see here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT&T_Internet_Services Quote
I'm using smtp.att.yahoo.com on port 465..

and pop.att.yahoo.com on port 995..

Right! I get that far and that works.
I also have other e-mail accounts. In OE I can have other POP accoujnts for incoming mail. That works Somebody sends me a message into one of my non-yahoo/att . OK. It comes in. Now I go to make a reply. that is where it gets hard. Yahoo.Att does not like me to use the SMTP for another account.

They expect that the POP and SMTP to be the same. I can receive from other accounts, but I can not reply to other accounts unless I change the address on the other accounts. This is kind of hard to explain. And it is very awkward.

Anyway, it makes it near impossible to correspond to people with another e-mail address. I can receive mail send to my external POP servers. But I can not replay with that account as the origination address. The workaround is to start a replay and then try to switch it to another account so it will get past the Yahoo/Att guad dog.

Understand that they need to monitor SMTP usage. But I did have an account with another company that was more open with SMPT. I could use their server for outgoing even with a different POP name. I dropped that service in favor of ATT to get a LOWER price.

I do have my own SMTP servers, but I can not use them on my ATT/DSL. I have to go into a web mail account to send out stuff.

Is that a reasonable way to get ATT to allow me SMTP freedom?
Here is the problem. I was hoping somebody there would know how to do this. I think there is a way, but the documentation is so hard to follow. It is like you go into a restaurant to order a HAMBURGER and they give you a MENU with 25 pages.
It sounds like a matter of jumping through a few configuration hoops. As you said, there documentation is tedious but may reveal how to set it up.
Have you tried AT&T tech. support?

I can't see why they would allow pop in from another server, but would not allow smtp out to another server.. However, I've never had my own eMail sever so this type of configuration is a shot in the dark for me, and the possibilities would likely be more evident to SOMEONE with experience, having their own eMail server...

I just had a thought... We are able to send smtp mail to the regular at&t smtp server, but not to your own server... I don't know exactly how at&t does it, but they may ask us to use smtp port 465 because that is the port forwarded in their router to the internal smtp server..

So if your own server is behind a router, try opening a port in the router and forward it to tcp port 465 on your server... Tell the server to listen on port 465 in the software firewall as well, if there is no router...

Solve : Wireless Network Adaptors and Routers Question?

Answer»

Last week I purchased a Cisco Aironet 340 series ISA Wireless card for the old computer in our basement, so I could get the computer to connect to my father's network. Here's a question I need to ask. Will this card connect to the network if the wireless router is a D-Link DL-624? Both the router and the wireless card have the IEEE 802.11b wireless network specification at the 2.4Ghz band. The router's main specification is the IEEE 802.11g at the 5Ghz band. You'll have to enter the router's configuration setup and change the standard over to the 802.11/b standard...Your router DOES support 802.11/b, as well as /g..

It might already be set at 802.11 g/b in which it would detect EITHER type of implementation. But just to be sure make sure the router is configured for at least /b..

To enter the router setup, just type the router IP ADDRESS into a browser such as IE or Firefox...The last time I had a card with the 802.11b specification installed in the Dell computer in our basement, it connected with the router, thus I likely my father doesn't have to do anything. (The router belongs to him.)So when you install the ISA card and driver does it work?

If not you might have to configure the IRQ for it... What's the make/model of the computer and Operating System..I haven't received the card in the mail yet. I'm under the assumption that the card is going to use IRQ11.

The computer is an HP Pavilion 200Mhz Pentium with Windows 98SE. (I had recently upgraded the operating system to be able to install the latest version of Logitech MouseWare, version 9.80.)

I had a firewall (Tiny Personal) and anti-virus (Avast!) installed last week, but will install them before installing the wireless card so that I'll have protection since the computer will be able to access the internet when I'm finished. I have no plans on accessing IE for I'm going to be using the computer's online capability for wireless LAN gaming for the most part. The only other purpose is to be able to transfer files to the other computers for backup purposes on the library computer's external hard drive.

When I remove the Ethernet card that is used with a wired connection, I will need to be able to use CCLEANER to remove any UNNEEDED program entries in the registry pertaining to that card. Quote from: Ryan on February 24, 2010, 01:58:00 PM

The router's main specification is the IEEE 802.11g at the 5Ghz band.
While it's probably not relevant to your question, 802.11g operates within the 2.4 GHz range. Yours should also. See DI-624 High-Speed 2.4GHz (802.11g) Wireless 108Mbps Router. Quote from: dahlarbear on February 24, 2010, 11:03:30 PM

This is true.. my bad The /b network card will connect if the router is configured for /g.. But will be limited to 11 mbps..I have an update, and a good one at that! It wasn't the Cisco Aironet 340 series ISA card that enabled me to connect to my father's wireless network. Despite numerous attempts, even putting in the WEP KEY, it failed to connect.

I uninstalled the Sound Blaster PCI128 card, and removed it along with the Cisco, but not before uninstalling the firewall to prevent the 'blue screen of death' appearing and telling me about an invalid VxD.

With both cards removed, I inserted a Sound Blaster AWE64 ISA card in the PCI128's place, and put in a D-Link DWL-520 wireless card, the very card I originally got for the nearby Dell 2350. I was able to install the sound drivers without incident, and was able to get the external midi module to respond. Now the next thing. I was able to install the D-Link card, and after installing the Air Utility, I put in what was necessary to be able to connect to my father's network, and the computer connected to the network successfully at long last!

My only gripe now is that I'll have to get a CD-ROM audio splitter cable to go from both CD drives to the one CD audio jack on the AWE64. Until then, the E: drive will stay connected to the TAD input on the card so that the DVD-ROM drive can use the CD audio connector.

Solve : Why am I not getting max network speeds with a new GB Switch??

Answer»

Hello!

I just got this switch
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127082&Tpk=dgs-2208

I have 2 computers wired to the switch and both computers have 10/100/1000Mbps max LAN speeds and both have 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drives. Printed on the Ethernet cables is "ETL verified to TIA/EIA 568-A CAT .5 - - - CAT .5E 350 MHZ UTP" One computer has Windows 7 64bit and the other has Vista 64bit. I understand I'm not going to reach 1 GBs but my speeds after hooking the switch up didn't really change one bit.

Currently I can transfer a movie file from my computer to the other at 11 to 12 MB/s. If I understand the math correctly using CAT 5e cable I should be seeing 42 MB/s correct? This is my first GB network rodeo so I'm probably just missing or not understanding something. Any help is appreciated. Ok a little update. There is a light on the switch that tells you if that port is on 100 or 1000. My computer is saying 1000 but the other computer (now in question) is showing that it's on 100. I'm not sure why though.

This is the board in the other computer
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131288

You will see the Onboard LAN Speed is 10/100/1000Mbps and I just tried to update the driver through windows and it says it's on the latest one. The Ethernet cable for this PC is the exact same as mine. I went to the NIC driver properties and didn't see anything along the lines of changing it's speed (but, I have NEVER messed with NIC drivers in detail). Are there software settings that need to be adjusted to allow such speeds or maybe a defective NIC? On the computer that is indicating only 100 mbps, go into Control Panel (Classic Mode) Select Device Manager. In dev. manager, right click on the network card driver, click properties.. Select the "advanced" tab..
Highlight "link speed" and click on the down arrow on the right for the options..

Set it to 1000 mbps Full duplex.... if it is not already set..

Make sure the network card in your other computer is set to the same..
Thanks for the REPLY EEVIAC. I'm not seeing "link speed" in the settings.

there are a couple more options when you scroll down
UDP Checksum Offload (IPv4)
UDP Checksum Offload (IPv6)
Wake Up Capabilities
However I don't think any of those have anything to do with it.

If the section I have highlited is what you are refering to and if the LAN is suppose to support 1000mbps why would the option not be there? I only see 100mbps What are the options for link speed on your other computer, in dev. manager? What I want to see. Haha.

What is the make/model of the computer that is stuck on the 100 mbps speed?

We may have to search for a better network card driver.. Windows Update is not always efficient when updating drivers...It's a home built PC. I am using the on board LAN. This is the link to the motherboard on newegg.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131288

I did go to ASUS's support site and search for the latest LAN driver. I never really understand which one to download though. They have 7 LAN drivers for that motherboard's onboad LAN. I wish I could give you the direct link to where I'm looking on there but you have to fill out the specs in order to see the downloadable driver options.

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

>Motherboard
>Socket775
>P5KPL-CM
>Vista 64bit

I downloaded the first one on there "ATHEROS L1E Driver V1.0.0.45 for Windows 32bit XP/64bit XP/32bit Vista/64bit Vista/32bit Win7/64bit Win7." Maybe I have the wrong driver? Swap the network cables and see what the effect is.

EDIT: what I mean is, use computer1's cable for computer2 and vice versa.I can't find another driver... It looks like you did good by getting the getting the one you did from ASUS...

You should have listings in your device manager for 1G link speed..

I would contact ASUS...

There may be a bug in your current bios that prevents using the 1G onboard card speed, which a bios update may fix, if there is one available..

I changed the FSB speed in one of my own computers once, in the bios.. Then when I went to confirm the speed increase in Winodws, using CPU-Z, and there was no speed increase detected.... I concurred with others and concluded that there is a bug...

Thank you both for the help. I will try tomorrow and contact ASUS if I can't find a resolution and let you know what's up. Maybe newegg is accidentally false advertising this motherboards onbaord LAN. Who knows.... yet. the 1G listing will only appear if the card detects that it's able to achieve that speed. a bad cable can cause it to determine that it's unable to achieve reliable 1000mbps throughput, so it only allows up to 100mbps.rasulin, switch the cables and see what you get, if you haven't already..Did you verify Device Manager is loading the desired driver "version"?

Although not the same board or operating system, ASUS forum has some unhappy people reporting similiar problem. [Problem]P5Q Pro with Atheros Gigabit LAN.Ok the cables are routed pretty "neatly" so I didn't want to mess with it until this morning when I knew I had the time. I grabbed a new 15' cable from the garage and hooked it up. Surprisingly the switch and PC are reporting 1.0 Gbps now! I guess I just had a bad cable and never knew it. Luckily I have plenty of those to go around. I didn't know your NIC actually checks those either.

Learn something everyday!

Thanks for the help everyone! Don't know of what point I would have thought of the cable. Probably after my head was through the wall.

Solve : Internet Random Drop out, Please Help!?

Hello Everyone,

I have an AMD ATHLON 64 3700+ 2.21GHz, 1 GB of RAM, i am connected to the internet with Telstra as my internet provider, i have a Telstra Bigpond Modem- Thomson ST Remote NDIS Device. This modem has 1 Ethernet Slot and 1 USB Slot, i am currently running my computer through the USB Slot and my xbox 360 through the ethernet slot, this has RUN fine with no problems for the last 6 months untill 2 weeks ago. At any given time the internet stops working. The computer STILL recognizes that the modem is connected and the modem lights still flash but the internet doesnt work. This happens whether i do or dont have the xbox turned on at the time. At first i thought it was the internet provider (Telstra), or the modem, but then i discovered that the Xbox 360 would stay connected to the internet with no problems. The internet stays off until i restart my computer (My Computer ONLY, Not the modem) and then the internet runs perfect until it decides to cut out again where i need to restart my computer again. I have tried to sway the xbox and pc so that pc is on the ethernet and VICE versa but i still have the same problem.

Thank you for reading and i hope anyone can help!

MitchContact your system manufacturer and check the ip in your computer if the ip is 169 ip in your computer type this "netsh winsock reset" command in cmd with admin rigths in vista and 7.Ignore the above post.

Have you recently installed any new hardware or software or had any malware problems? What happens when you do a "clean boot"?I know you said that you've had both your pc & xbox plugged into the modem for 6 months without problems. Now having said that the following might be mind boggling. Modems that have a usb & ethernet port are not meant to have both connections active at the same time. It is a convenience provided to the user so they can use the ethernet or the usb connection. It is not a convenience provided to the user so they can use both ports.

I don't know if in the 6 months that your internet worked you used both your pc & xbox at the same time to access the internet. If you didn't and now you are then this is why you are having the problem. Most modems given to users do not allow for multiple devices to access the net at the same time. In your case it seems the xbox is taking priority and keeping the internet connection and your pc losing it.

Try this: unplug your xbox from the modem and plug the pc to the ethernet port. See if you lose internet connection at any point. If you don't then you now know the problem. If you do lose your connection then there is SOMETHING else going wrong.

Solve : Help connecting to the internet...?

Heres my scenario... I currently am renting a HOUSE where I receive free cable from my landlords LINE the lines are connected from our house to his as well as any PHONE lines. We had no need for a phone land line as we always use cells. However I want internet access, I am currently ABLE to pick up on what I believe is his wirelesly but I can only be in one room. I want to be able to take my computer anywhere in the house. Question being can I just buy a new modem and hook it into the cable outlet or a router to get a stronger signal.

Really frustrating I did use Alltel wireless before so it wasn't an issue but it proved to costly for there company as we are pretty rural so they bought our service out. I need OPTIONS. Do I have any?1. Free Cable. Not sure what's on the "cable"... And it's "free" because...
     a. Does the cable carry TV programming?
     b. Does cable company also offer Hi-Speed Internet connectivity over the cable?
     c. Does anybody "pay" for this service?
     d. Does landlord have an account for cable TV?
     e. If yes, does landlord also have Hi-Speed Internet service through this account?
     f. And you pick up "free" cable TV because the signal to his house (account) is "split" and fed to you?
     g. But you don't get "free" Hi-Speed Internet access because...

2. How close are the houses (in feet or meters)?

3. Options. Don't know... The facts aren't clear yet. You're probably in a better position than us to determine who the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are in your area and what type of Internet Connections they provide.
     a. Cable

     c. Satellite

Solve : Connected to network, but not to internet?

Answer»

I have had many problems with internet connectivity on my dell studio laptop. I am a college student that lives with three other roomates, all of which have perfect internet connectivity. My computer is able to identify the network from the college, but the access is "LOCAL only." I used to be able to fix the problem with diagnose and repair/reset network adapter "wireless internet connection" which would return my internet connection. But that no longer works. Using an ethernet cable does not fix the problem either. As yoy could imagine i'm very frustrated and haven't a clue of what to do. I would greatly appreciate the help. Thank youWhat's the make/model of the laptop?

To help determine if this is a hardware or software problem, generally the first thing I do, in this situation is boot into Safe Mode with Networking...

Restart the computer, and tap the F8 key until you come to the Advanced Boot Options menu.. Select Safe Mode with Networking.

When it boots up, see if you can connect to the Internet, by wired or wireless..

It MIGHT be a little tricky connecting by wireless in this mode because Windows doesn't load some of the convenient icons that it would load NORMALLY..

In Windows Vista, if you get lost, go into Control Panel (make sure it's "control panel home")Click on the green Network & Internet icon, then under that category, click "connect to a network", to find the wireless network you wish to connect to...

I appreciate the reply! It's a dell studio with windows vista. I logged onto safe made with networking, and i was automatically connected to the internet. Whats the next step? This means that your problem is software-related..

Next thing I would do is be sure your computer is free of viruses..

I could RECOMMEND some scans myself, but the virus forum here at CH would do a more thorough job...

Post here next, before posting read the pre-posting intructions.. If they they are able to remove any malware, and it fixes your problem then congratulations.. If they remove malware and it does not fix your problem, or they don't find any malware, then just post back here and we'll continue looking for culprit software... After booting the computer back up normally after the internet working in safe mode, the internet remained working. I downloaded an antivirus software (i did originally have avast) that found a lot of infections, so hopefully that takes care of that problem. A second problem i've always had since arriving on campus, that none of my roomates have had, where my internet goes down and SAYS it cant communicate with the dns server. I simply click to reset it, and it works again, but it still always ends up going down again. Could you please help me out with that?Download Malwarebytes anti virus and run another scan...

If you found a lot of infections, then chances are good that there are more in your system.. I'm not an expert at removing malware but some viruses are missed by any given anti-virus program and, one anti-virus program will find what another does does not find...

Be sure you update malwarebytes to the latest definitions, before you run the scan.

1) Ensure Printer on XP machine is shared - assume it's called SHAREDPRINTER.

2) On the Network Browsing on your Windows 7 machine ensure you can "SEE" the Printer share.

Now on the Windows 7 machine do the following (doesn't matter if it's X-86 or x-64).

3) Control Panel==> add LOCAL (Yes LOCAL) printer. I know it's on a Network but hold your horses -- what we are actually doing is "Poodlefaking" the Windows 7 machine into thinking it's running the printer.

4) Create NEW port==>Local port

5) PORTNAME is \\XPMACHINE\SHAREDPRINTER

6) Now Windows 7 will load a driver and you'll be able to print on the XP machine.

Simple

(For a "Network STAND alone printer") at 4) chose TCPIP port
and at 5) enter the IP address.

Solve : Cisco 1721 - WIC-1ENET Problems?

Answer»

Hi there,

I'm having some problems with a Cisco 1721 & WIC-1ENET.

I've got it setup as part of a Cisco site to site VPN, and now the 1721 doesn't respond on the eth0 interface anymore. When I log on to the console connection I am able to ping the tunnel (through the fa int) and the network (192.168.1.x subnet) on the other side, but I am not able to ping the eth0 interface from my LAN (192.168.2.x subnet)

Here's the show int eth0:

Ethernet0 is up, line protocol is down
Hardware is PQUICC Ethernet, address is 0004.dc0c.b55b (bia 0004.dc0c.b55b)
  Internet address is 192.168.2.250/24
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 10000 Kbit, DLY 1000 usec,
     reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
  Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set
  Keepalive set (10 sec)
  Full-duplex, 10BaseT
ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00
Last input never, output never, output hang never
Last clearing of "show interface" counters never
Input queue: 0/75/0/0 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 244
  Queueing strategy: fifo
  Output queue: 40/40 (size/max)
  5 MINUTE input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
  5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
0 packets input, 0 bytes, 0 no buffer
     Received 0 broadcasts, 0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles
     0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored
0 input packets with DRIBBLE condition detected
     32 packets output, 3719 bytes, 0 underruns
0 output errors, 0 collisions, 3 interface resets
     0 babbles, 0 late collision, 0 deferred
0 lost carrier, 0 no carrier
0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out

I wasn't having problems yesterday, but this morning I was unable to ping "through" the 1721 to the 192.168.1.x subnet.

Also, there are no link lights on the WIC, or on the switch it is plugged into. I have tried a different cable and a different switch port, as well as REBOOTING (switching off and on) the router (a couple of times) and issuing a shut and then no shut to the eth0 int.

Anybody got any ideas on how to troubleshoot this further, as I'm at a total loss.

(Thanks for you time and help)

Please note, out of paranoia I've changed the IP's Well I don't how many Cisco guys hang out at these BOARDS so you may have a tough time getting your question answered. However, from my days of studying Cisco I can remember if your line protocol is down then it is due to either "keepalive settings" or an "encapsulation settings". Somehow one of these has changed. I couldn't tell you what commands you need to run to check these but it should give you a clue as to where to start focusing. Also, have you searched for "line protocol is down"? I'm sure you will get enough results to help you with this.I did have a look around on the web but couldn't find anything that worked.

I ended up taking the router out of the system, stripping it down to look for signs of PHYSICAL damage, reseating the WIC and then it worked.

I think the WIC just overheated.

Solve : issue with connecting to my server via FTP Filezilla or any client.?

Answer»

I consider this a network issue ??
I have an issue connecting to my server via FTP Flotilla or any client.
Nobody can solve this..issue
I can connect here at the public or any other net work besides my home.
This was happening end of last summer magically went away. Then came back again one night during and upload to one of my web sites. For no reason. Now I cant connect[only at my hose]
I'm connected now at the public library and UPLOADING files. If shut down and go home I cannot connect via FTP.
I had Comcast REPLACE my modem; I connected my laptop directly to the modem bypassing the network equipment. And still no ftp connection, although there is an internet connection. So next I reformatted both my laptops and my main tower PC reconfigured set my router and access points. Still no FTP connection even though I can surf and send/receive email. With the same lap top now reformatted I'm at the library and I can instantly connect FTP, if I close down and go home I will not be able to connect even after a new modem and reformatting & reconfiguring everything. Host/user/pass info in concrete.
Any help??
My net work
1. Comcast cable from pole
2. Cable modem (new)
3. Linksys router and (1) Linksys switch (reconfigured)

Have you tried using a different ftp client, Like FileZilla?

edit: What operating systems are you running the ftp client on? You might have to open/create TCP ports 20 and 21 in Windows Firewall if you're using Windows... Name port 21 "Server Request" because that's the port that the client uses to request service from the server... Name port 20 "data-transfer" because that port is used to transfer data...

If your computer is behind a firewall at home, you'll have to do some port forwarding in the router/gateway... Do you know how to do that?

this is a strange problem i have 7 pcs on a network from win 98/ xp/ and vista

You are better qualified that I am. So I will have to come up with ideas you have not tried. You might check with you neighbors and see if they have com cast also for internet. My gut feelings that com cast has your site on a blacklist for FTP.

This is not a joke. This is happening. The will allow HTTP, but not FTP.
http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2007/11/comcast-sued-ov/
So if you have a server that shares an IP address, and another site in the group is a P2P, then you will not get FTP at that address.

There is a big thing going on now about the P2P sites, Bit Torrent, and the companies that have an interest in the entertainment industry.
Read the link I gave above. Yes, the information is two years old, but the conflict has not been really RESOLVED. You may have to sue ComCast! Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 21, 2010, 09:35:58 PM

This is exactly what crossed my mind... Bit Torrent client allow for protocol encryption so ISPs do not throttle the bandwidth or keep check on P2P

Try to find a FTP client software that offers protocol encryption..

Try one of these: http://software.informer.com/getfree-core-ftp-protocol-encryption/

You might also try setting up your FTP clients and server to use ports other than default FTP ports, TCP 20 and 21 ...Your ISP could be monitoring traffic on those ports thanks folks....ill try reading the ARTICLE http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2007/11/comcast-sued-ov/ and

BUT !! I spent countless hours on the phone with Comcast tech support probably 15 different people on a dozen diff times. including managers . THAT alone will drive the average human nuts. finally I requested they replace my cable modem. Also many tech calls to ipower.com where my hosting account is , and the problem doesn't seem to stem from them.
Also this happend one last summer after about 8 calls to commcast tech support a man did something to fix it, he also was stumped. not sure what he did . so i got in contact with a higher level manager and she spent about an hour on the phone and this was with my lap top plugged right into the modem as they asked me to do to bypass other network stuff.
alls I'm trying to do is upload my files to websites i maintain. i used to do it at work due to some of my site were work related. bla bla. comcast is pretty much us less for this issue the average line person didn't even know what ftp was. I also tried going directly with a connection through the dos/commant prompt, ii can connect to the server but it stops me at password. and my password is concrete. due to the fact i use it at the library public network.
I have a couple other post out. so have to see whats up.

in addition the comcast guy came out gave me a new modem tried like *censored* to connect ftp HTTM was fine and email he called several of his buddies and no luck.
OK this sort a think poops me out!!!!

Oh I forgot to mention Ive tried several ports.
ii m aware of port forwarding i used to set up ip based Internet camera systems. one should be able to go to my network connection click on add new network place and set up an ftp connection its simple just type in ftp://ftp.hostname.com hit enter the enter user ans password. dint even need a ftp client. iv done that for 10 years. even though i prefer an flt client like file zilla. I have a cheap web host I use that lets me upload in a different protocol. Can you get into your control panel of you site? There may be an option there to load files without using ftp. I am not sure of how that works.

I would suggest you try FTP on other sites. Just to sell if it is all FTP or just FTP into your site IP . Are you using a shared IP? Where is your server located geographically?

I am on AT&T and have no trouble with FTP. But the block any SMTP form me unless it is directed to their mail server, not mine. The big companies do not want us to use the internet as we want. They say they are "protecting" us by restricting what we can do.

Update. Just did some search. ComCast has been blocking lots of sites for some time. The say it is not true.

Quote
Writing in his bog, one angry customer said that recently Comcast has upped the ante and will block all email from the offending server.

The punter works for a news site and says that Comcast users that have requested daily news emails from the site and are being denied email they have asked for.

He had tried to get Comcast to look at the problem, but the outfit did not seem particularly interested. Loyal readers of the news site who have complained that their news is not being delivered have also complained and been ritualistically ignored.

After much shouting Comcast has lifted the block on the IP range. But this seems to be a problem with several US ISPs. For example, one ISP in Florida and another in California are convinced that every email from Bulgaria must be spam and is refusing to receive mail with a .bg ending.

Ironically the same mail sent from yahoo.com gets through. µ

Did you see the phrase ' block on the IP range' in the quote above?
To find more of this, Google ComCast blockexcellent information

It's a conspiracy.. They're plotting against us!

Solve : wifi wont connect anymore?

Answer»

I use a compaq presario f700. I used to be able to connect to my FATHERS wifi router but now it won't let me. The message I get is this.

Windows tried to repair but a problem still exist.

I used another laptop and it connected fine. I am still able to connect to my mothers router but not this one. What steps should I take to fix this?Since you used to be able to connect, and now you can't all of a sudden, I would make sure the firmware is up to date on the router. Just go to the manufacturer's website and look for your product's SUPPORT. Try this and let us know what happens.I just noticed you said that another laptop worked with your father's router. I'd still do the firmware upgrade.

If you do that and still nothing, then you could try to update the DRIVER's for your network card on your laptop. It's a start. Let us know how it goes.If he used to be able to connect then the firmware version of the router has nothing to do with it. I would NOT update the router firmware unless absolutely necessary - I've seen several routers become unusable after firmware "upgrades".

You said you used to be able to connect - what is different between the last time you connected and the first time you couldn't (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)? Quote from: ALLAN on January 22, 2010, 05:55:21 AM

It could have everything to do with it. (If he/she wasn't able to connect using another laptop) Which I already corrected myself about in the above reply. I don't know how many times i've seen people ask the exact same question, and then update their router's firmware, and problem solved. I understand what you mean about the firmware update, but the whole point of firmware updates is to keep the router's functionality up to date, and to keep it running properly. You shouldn't avoid the update just because some people have had bad experiences with them. They're saying that windows GIVES them the error. So maybe they should try to update the drivers on the laptop. They could always roll back if they need too.

Solve : New XP download- laptop won't connect to wireless?

Answer»

So... since my hard drive broke I had a new one installed. I installed Windows XP from a CD that did not come with my laptop. I installed the drivers from the HP website.
Now I can't connect to my wireless network, although the wirless network is shown in the network list with a full 5 bars. Every time I try to connect it loads for a while and says that I can't connect, because the network is possibly not there anymore or out of range. I've played around with the settings and properties with no luck.
The laptop from which I'm now working on is connected to that network.

A friend said that it might be a wireless modul problem and suggested that I download SiSoftware Sandra to find out if I have the RIGHT modul installed... I installed the program though have no idea what I should be looking for.

So my question is: what could be the problem; what do I need to find out about my system/what I need to download so I can connect to my wireless?

Any help at all is GREATLY appriciated.

Go into control panel and find network adaptors open this and right click on your wireless card. Uninstall the wireless card DO NOT delete it. Then restart your computer and try again.Do you have any errors in Device MANAGER?
Did you try to hardwire laptop to the router? No errors in the Device Manager on the laptop that won't connect to wireless.
Though I do have one in the laptop that will connect... pretty sure it has nothing to do with my problem though.

I don't have another ethernet cable so that I could wire the router to my laptop...

Also, Mulreay... I can't find network adapters in the control panel. I'm kind of computer stupid. Where exactly are they?

I assume, the modem is connected to the router by ethernet cable, so you can disconnect router for the moment and plug ethernet cable coming out of the modem, STRAIGHT to the laptop.

Solve : Help with getting internet?

Answer»

I recently received a dell desktop computer, and installed ubuntu on it. It has no wireless card, and there is no Ethernet wall plug in around it anywhere. I bought a red Ethernet cable (I think its a crossover) on amazon and connected my laptop that gets wifi to the dekstop. For some reason the desktop computer isn't getting internet. Can someone help me please?

THANKS in ADVANCE,
Francesco

EDIT:
The desktop computer is receiving my IP and on my computer it SAYS it is sending like 37k bytes but when I open up the internet browser on the other computer, it says it cant find the webpage. It ALSO says it is connected on the desktop computer.1. Okay... Well I've never setup Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on a "wireless" connection; but I think it will work.

2. Crossover Cable. You'll need a "crossover" ethernet cable to connect the laptop computer to the desktop through their "wired" network connectors. I'd configure the laptop computer for ICS before physically connecting the two computers together.

Hold both ends of the CAT-5 cable together, tang side down. Now CLOSELY examine the color code (solid or stripes) on the eight wires in each connector. If the wires at each end of the cable are in the same color code sequence, you have a "straight through" cable. If they differ, you probably have a crossover cable.

Note: It's supposed to be a "crossover" cable, but if one or more of the network adaptors has automatic crossover implemented and enabled, a straight through ethernet cable might work.

3. Reference(s). For the documentation in the following links, the laptop will be the "host" ICS computer and the desktop will be the "client" ICS computer.
     a. Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in Microsoft Windows
     b. ICS Host Computer Setup in Windows XP
     c. ICS Host Computer Setup – Windows Vista
     d. Internet Connection Sharing – ICS Client Computer Setup

4. Satisfaction Not Guaranteed. If you successfully enable ICS through the "wireless" adaptor of laptop, the laptop must be on for desktop internet access and you'll be limited by its processing power, processing load, and the throughput rate of its "wireless" connection.

Although you should be able to "surf" the internet and perform "normal" downloads through the ICS connection, there are functional limitations that a normal connection doesn't have. I just don't remember what they are...

Under wireless settings, there are two items I don't understand.
1. If you post the make, model name/number, and hardware version of the "wireless" component you're configuring (look on sticker back or bottom of component); perhaps we could pull the documentation and identify what component and configuration items you're referring to.

2. Wireless ACCESS.
     a. Are you planning to use "wireless" connections within your local area network?
     b. If yes, do these wireless connections require internet access?
     c. If yes, do you want the wireless connections on the same logical subnet as your "wired" computers (to facilitate file/printer sharing)?

Under wireless settings, there are two items I don't understand. One is enable bridges and the other is enable wireless radio. First what does the terminology mean and do they have to be enabled or disabled for a secure system?
1. Enable Wireless Radio. Must be enabled to permit wireless clients (laptops?) access to the wireless access point (for wireless network operating in infrastructure mode). When disabled, wireless clients may not connect through the access point. They would have to be configured for ad-hoc mode (which is essentially peer-to-peer communications). It is my hope (and belief) that there are no wireless EMISSIONS from access point when it is "disabled" (to avoid unnecessary exposure to 2.4 GHz signals). You should "enable" this capability if you wish laptops to have "wireless" access to your network.

2. Enable Bridges. Must be enabled to permit linkage and/or communication between two (or more) wireless access points. This permits you to tie subnets together through wireless LINKS (into one local area network I believe). If you only have "one" wireless access point, you should "disable" this capability as you won't be using it. I've never used this mode, so I'll just point you to some reference(s):

Solve : Internet crashes during upload.?

Answer»

For the past couple of days whenever I try to upload a file via my web browser it will cause my internet to completely crash, and it takes a few minutes for me to get it back. It is not the browser as I tried it in firefox, IE, and Opera. Strangely though I am able to file transfer large files over MSN without a problem, and I'm having no problems with downloading.

I have a theory as to how this happened, though I'm not really sure. Recently I attempted to forward a port to increase my upload speed on utorrent using the instructions linked to below, as my upload speed with utorrent is dreadfully slow. (0.5 kb/s slow) It started not long after I did it, so it seems like a logical assumption to me. I've reversed everything done since though and yet the problem persists.

http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/ZyXEL/P-660R-D1/Utorrent.htm

I am running windows XP SP2 and my antivirus is AVG. If any further information is needed just ask.

Thanks in advance. What do you mean your Internet is crashing? Are browsers crashing or are you being disconnected from the internet?

Have you installed any new software lately?
Just Opera, Medieval CUE splitter and a FLAC converter. Not anything I think WOULD cause this problem.Well, if it works in safe mode it's likely software related one way or the other. I'd suggest a clean boot to normal mode (either open msconfig and choose "selective startup", disabling everything from starting and then reboot OR reboot and as soon as the blue WINDOWS screen appears depress and hold down the LEFT CTRL key. Keep it depressed until the OS finishes loading (at least 60 seconds)). Then let's see what happens.Fixed. Thanks.Glad you got it sorted out. What did it END up being? Not sure I just went through and disabled a bunch of things. Not like I really need most of them anyway.Well now wait a minute, we need to sort this out. If you did this through msconfig we need to figure out which process was causing the problem so you can restore normal startup.

Solve : Wireless/Microsoft Problems and etc.?

Answer»

Hello, i have 3 problems to be EXACT with my computer.
1. Every time I start up windows i get two of the same messages and also when i click on my wireless UTILITY icon folder i get the same message (Microsoft Process Kill Utility)
2. I cant update my wireless network adapter it says error 1316 a network error accured while attempting to read file. then says fatal error consult windows installer helper...
3. my net work is stuck at 11mbps and i want it at 54 but without update idk how. also i have to have windows automaticaly connect to internet since i cant use my wirless utility icon or program in GENERAL and some times it dissconnects me. ( other computer runs strong at 54mbps )...

DETAILS:
OS: Windows Xp service pack 3.

Anti-Virus: Norton internet SECURITY 2009.
-------------------------------------------------------
please help i really want to be at 54mbps and have the kill utility to go away and have my puter nice again.

Hello
Let start by first stating u will never get the 54mbps the service states. This is only a theoretical speed. I assume this is a wireless card?
OK, now lets start troubleshooting.
First: let start by doing a check disk. If u have a Win XP disk use the Recovery Console check disk. This is the preferred way. If not use u can right click the C:\ >tools>check disk select both options, follow instruction. This will give us some what clean file system.
Second: If u can not use your laptop download the drivers from the manufacture website and save them to a FLASH drive. U might have to use a friend PC. Uninstall the existing drivers first, then reinstall the new drivers.
Keep in mind that location make a big difference in receiving the signal. Write back and let us know the out come.
I really hope you're not paying for 54Mb/s. And something makes me think the 11Mb/s is all you're going to get. Even if you can get more, It's still not worth paying for 54Mb/s. Who is your ISP?i reinstalled the software for the encore enlwi-g2 with my flashdrive, it worked no more kill utility but if it ever pops up imma search kill.exe for malware. thank your for the advice on reinstalling i cant believe it was that simple.... and i got full bar just it ranges for 1mbps-19 rarely mbps... while my computer next to this one stays strong at 54mbps, im sure im doing something simple again... any suggestion?

encore enlwi-g2 wireless adapter.

att wireless tower.

other computer always has fast internet..

thanks again guys i appreciate the help

Solve : User privacy?

How do you guys know exactly in what city I live and what my ISP is?
What TOOLS do you use for this?

I think it's a bit too much concerning privacy..

IP addesses are not confidential. They APPEAR on your posts in forum software but can be (and are) hidden from the general membership. Your IP address is also included in every email you send (in the header). There is nothing secret about IP addresses. As for finding where that IP address originates (ISP and location), there are any number of sites that identify the point of origin including the most well known, WHOISI know all that, but when the person is linked to an ISP, it denotes the location of that ISP, not of exactly where the person LIVES, including latitude and longtitude. No?Forum personnel cannot determine your exact location without contacting your ISP.http://www.ip2location.com/

Or that It's all legal stuff really. Webmasters use it for analytic information mainly.I'd be more concerned about the "cell phone" that you're probably carrying... Something along the LINES of "GPS coordinates" and overzealous governments turning on the microphone without your permission...I don't have a smartphone man.
I have an old 2002 phone.
It doens't have GPS, neither WLAN, nothing.
Just SMS & call and GPRS.http://www.danasoft.com/

Solve : Connecting a Dell Ubuntu netbook to wireless router?

Answer»

I can get it to connect, but every TIME I shut it down and restart it I have to go through all sorts of hoops to get it CONNECTED. Is there a way for it to connect automatically to my network? There should be, but for the life of me I cannot figure it out. I'm not a computer noob, but am very new to wireless networks. The netbook involved is running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. THANKS if anyone can help!Uh, yeah. How about telling it to automatically connect to the network? That works. Sorry to trouble anybody who bothered to read my post. In my defense, it was very FRUSTRATING though and I am pretty computer savvy (including LINUX which the netbook has). Issue solved. Finally...

Solve : Peer to Peer small office?

Pertinent information

2 hosts with NICs hardwired to eachother using a blue network cable, one wireless g router, internet hard wired from the wall, and a box i assume is the gateway (dont know what it is.. its from the ISP

a huge mess of networking and paths

The Scenerio

I went in to simply clean and tune up their PCS, to find out they had not had any virus protection for 2 months, were not using their own internet, theirs was disconnected and they were picking up the wireless signal from next door. They run a salon program on their main computer (host 1) that the owner likes to have access to from her office (host 2), she also likes to have access to the C: on Host 1. there is a big blue wire that connects the 2 machines. an unused wireless g router in the corner, and an intricate mess of network places and connections. there is a constant warning that keeeps popping up about Ip Address is the same as another system on the network. DHCP is checked on both machines, and i am unable to release and renew ips. currently host 1 shows they are connected to a wireless network, sending and receiving packets, all devices working properly, however the browser cannot pull up a page, nor does is display the not connected page. ( it seems they are both connected through a wireless connection, because when the internet is disconnected on Host 2 it cant connect to the application on Host 1)

what I WOULD like to do

connect both pcs with the router and printer hooked to host 2,

Share Host 1 C: with desktop SHORTCUT on Host 2

Share Salon Biz on Host 1 with Host 2

use the cable from the wall and wireless g router with host 2

and share the internet connection with host 1

make it so there is no ip conflict

please advise this network is such a mess

Why was their Wireless G router "disconnected"? Was their ISP service turned off? If not, what was the reason they set it aside, disconnected? Quote
n unused wireless g router in the corner,
Make and model? Does it seem to be alright?
Is the 'blue' cable la crossover?she bought the business, computer system, and router as is.. i assume the blue cable is a crossover.
I plugged the router in and it lit up, i am assuming it is operational, i will know better tomorrow. assuming the router is functional how do i configure it to connect the two pcs and share the cable internet connection?? then share and map the the c:
i actually think its a patch cable... im not sure! whats really long, blue, rj 45?? Quote from: PeanutButt on January 18, 2010, 06:30:03 PM
she bought the business, computer system, and router as is.. i assume the blue cable is a crossover.

Well for starters, in my opinion, she should establish an ISP that the Wireless G router uses exclusively, so she can set up security on her router. If she continues to use next door's ISP then there's no telling what your going to GET, that is, unless she has made some kind of arrangment with them. If next door doesn't know she's using their wireless signal, that means there's no password and all the traffic between between the two "hosts" and the access point (next door) is unencrypted. This also means that outsiders/hackers can use the signal and monitor network traffic on the LAN. Not a good way to run a business.

Once she has established what router she wants to use and configured both computer to use that router, (don't use next door's if there is no password protection), you can set up the printer on host 2, and share the printer on the netowrk (do you know how to share a printer?) if that's the way you want it, and then both computers (host 1 & 2) can access eachother's files and printer through the router.. I don't see why there is a need for a cable between the two hosts when the router can take care of the job, unless maybe fault tolerance is required for file/printer access between the two hosts...

Once the router is operational and both computers are configured to use it, all you have to do to share the drives on the two hosts is this:

Say you want to share the drive on host 2 with host 1. You would right click on the drive you want to share on host 2, click properties, click on the sharing tab (this part may vary, depending on what OS you're using) and go through the process to share the drive. Once the drive is successfully shared...Go to host 1, right click on the START button on the desktop, click "explore", and from the tools menu, click, "map network drive" and go from there... At the end you'll have an icon on the host 1 desktop that you can use to connect to the network drive.

Be sure file and folder sharing is enabled on both computers in Windows Fire wall, and if your using Vista, make sure network discovery is turned on... Google "how to map a network drive" if you MUST...
When I said, "be sure file and folder sharing is enabled in the firewall, I meant file/printer sharing... Vista has options in the Network Sharing Cetner that need to be configured as well, for sharing anythingwont i have to configure ip addresses, i think there is a website where you would configure? how do i find one computer from the other? does it show up in metwork places? what about it being a workgroup? do i need to name that?they are both running xp. Quote from: PeanutButt on January 18, 2010, 07:53:07 PM
wont i have to configure ip addresses, i think there is a website where you would configure? how do i find one computer from the other? does it show up in metwork places? what about it being a workgroup? do i need to name that?

If you turn on DHCP in the router, and both of the computers are configured for dhcp as well (by default, they are configured to use dhcp), you don't have to mess with configuring IP addresses... Do you know how to turn on DHCP in the router? If the router is currently password protected with WEP or WPA2, then you'll have to connect to it with a cable (use a standard cable to connect one of the host computers to the router's LAN interface), open a browser, type the IP address of the router... When prompted, enter the router password (not the same thing as the wep/wpa2 password) and find where to turn on dhcp.......It should be a snap If there is no WPA2/wep password protection, then just use the wireless card in the computer to locate the router's signal (SSID) and connect to it (if the router is not broadcasting the SSID, as it can be configure to do so, then you'll just have to use a cable... BTW, always use WPA2, never use WEP, it's easily crackable..

Log onto your router from the Internet to turn on dhcp, if you must..

Don't worry about "my network places" or work groups until we've got all the essentials down and readyI forgot to mention that, dhcp may already be turned on in the router... If you click, START, All programs, accessories, command prompt

type: ipconfig press enter

Assuming that you've already connected to the router through cable or wireless, if it shows that you have a "default gateway" address and you have an "ip address", then your computer already has an IP address ASSIGNED to it...and any other computer that connect to the router will automatically get an ip address assigned to it..

Are the different SOCKETS on different telephone lines from your telco. also, depending on the age, the line may not be compatible with your adsl service. I had a similar problem, where I could not get a PARTICULAR service, because the copper telephone lines had an incompatible coding on the line. Ring your telephone service provider and have a chat to them about this.
