Solve : Need help with buying ADSL Filters...?

Answer»

I recently installed my parants new 256/64 kbps ADSL service at their home. Now i have to buy another 2 filters for the 2 PHONES that they have in other rooms and was wondering if i should buy two ADSL 2/2+ filters instead of the normal ADSL ONES, so if and when they update their internet service from ADSL to ADSL 2/2+, they wont have to update and buy new filters aswell.
So my question's are,
1. Do you guys think that this is a good idea ?
and
2. Are ADSL 2/2+ filters compatible with normal ADSL?
Thanks for your help. I don't know.  I have DSL and have filters but never had to buy any of them.  They were provided by my ISP, along with the DSL modem.     Are you sure the ISP does not provide filters?

BTW, 256/64 kbps is not very good speed for DSL.  Is that the best they can GET in their area?  How much does it COST?

Edit: I'm under the impression the ADSL 2/2+ applies to modems but not filters.  In other words, the filters are the same, whether regular ADSL or ADSL 2/2+.  Can you cite PROOF that special ADSL 2/2+ filters are needed?

Solve : how to test wireless a/b/g ability?

Answer»

let say, my board got a PCI interface that support a/b/g type wireless network.
And, i bought a a/b/g PCI wireless adapter and a/b/g wireless router.
But how to test it out.
Which one to configure?
my wireless card, or wireless router?
I don't understand your question...
In order to SETUP a wireless network you need to configure the router to host the network and configure the wireless card to connect to the network.my question is, how to test a/b/g ability
because i got dual band router and wireless card, a/b/g supported.
but i need to test only one band each time.
using router utility, i couldn't find any field to disabl B/G, let say i want the router to have A band only.
and also the wireless card utility too.How to do setup SOMETHING LIKE that depends entirely on how the manufacturer of the router have chosen to implement it. Could you tell me the brand and model name of that router?
symbol wireless switch WS2000 and access POINT AP300I haven't been able to find a manual for that particular AP. So I can only suggest you consult the documentation that came with the AP. If you can't find anything in the documentation or AP config page I think it isn't possible to configure the AP to only use a single band.
If the wireless card came with a config tool from the manufacturer you MAY be able force it to only use a single band. But if the card uses the windows wireless tool I don't believe you can configure anything like that.

Solve : need to disconnect?

Answer»

hi hope someone can help i have 2 pcs in the house and a router which i need to unplug as my son is taking his PC and i havnt got a clue wot to do and DONT WANT to be left with no internet connection on my pc can any one tell me wot i unplug and plug back in where i really need this done asap thanksWhy do you SAY that "you need to unplug the router"? If he TAKES the router then yes, you have to unplug it, but if he doesn't want to take away the router you may use it further.
If the router "has to" go, there are a few cases. Your connection to ISP remains (I presume), so all you have to do is to set up your computer or buy another router and make the settings that were made on the other router.no he doesnt need the router so do i just unplug his pc and leave mine as it is ?Yes.

Solve : NETGEAR DG834GT firmware upgrade problem?

Answer»

Hi there

I'm trying to UPGRADE this routers firmware, each time I try I get the following message:

Upgrade file is not the correct type or version for this device.
Upgrade failed.

Please obtain the correct file and try again.

It is unofficial firmware, but I don't see that as being the problem as I haven't heard of ANYONE else experiencing the same problems.

I have tried several DIFFERENT versions of firmware, all resulting in the same message.

It does say in the ROUTER upgrade help file:

If you are unable to successfully upgrade using this method, refer to the Reference Manual on the DG834GTResource CD for other ways to upgrade the Router.

Well, I don't have the resource CD and the manual I downloaded from Netgear has no reference to this.

Any ideas chaps?

"unofficial firmware", where did you get it?

Have you been to http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/DG834GT.asp ?I found out about the unofficial firmware here:

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/424180.html

Makes interesting reading. People are saying that they get uninterrupted/improved connections using the unofficial 1.0.30 version.

The download link for 1.0.30:

I also came accross this:

Which has download links also.Is this the manual you downloaded?: http://kbserver.netgear.com/pdf/dg834gt_manual.pdf

Solve : Wireless Network issue repair?

Answer»

I have a problem with my wireless network, I am sharing network, and sometimes it turns off and I try to repair it, but I can't because I can't click it, I try clicking on the repair, but its locked or something. Any idea how to fix it ? I think it MIGHT have something to do with my recent change in user account, I did change my user account to a to debugger and then change it back, and then when It tells you to log out, I logout and after I log back in, my wallpaper CHANGED back to my school wallpaper and I can't access adminstrator folder, I try changing the password, but after I start a new password, it says access denied. I also can't change window firewall setting. It SOUNDS like your account was effected during the change back, you either lost permissions or have ecountered a problem with your router, cables, software-setup.
such as a bug or worm. Try enter with no password 1ST and let me know what OS, Scanners, Net hookup config and computer setup if you could? I realize you prob hv solved this by now, if so tell how, if not not let me know?
I got it fixed, It seem I been disconnected from the workgroup or something. So he reset the adminstrator password and had it all fixed.

Solve : Where do I get a router with USB A output??

Answer»

So...my laptop doesn't have working ethernet. And I am sick of flaky wireless connections, and can't afford hundreds of dollars to get good equipment, or something.

My DSL modem has a USB output though. So I BOUGHT a cable, and voila, connected to the internet via a cable for the FIRST time. But...now the router. The router connects via ethernet. I don't care. But I can't find a router that will use the same USB connection these modems use! Thus, I can only connect one machine to the modem.

Oh and of course, the modem refuses to use Ethernet AND USB. It only does one or the other. It's a Westell 2200.

So I read about USB to ethernet adapters, but I don't even want one. I know there's PCMCIA ethernet cards, but I'd rather just replace the motherboard than add all that crap. I did try a PCMCIA wireless card, which was notable in that its speed was glacial, about 5 kilobits per second, where as I could get upwards of 40 on a similar USB adapter I had been using. I don't know what the problem was.

So, to clarify, I've got my computer connected to a modem via USB, and there doesn't appear to be a router that can use the same USB connection.

Help!!You don't

You can....
A. Fix your wireless connection, or
B. Get a PCMCIA ethernet card

By the way, any direct connection to your modem will always run faster than if you run behind a router/firewall. This is why your USB connection is working so good.

There's really not a significant difference in speed, no significant slow down from using a router.  If there is, it may be an INDICATION your router needs to be replaced. Quote from: ImpossibleProblems on November 07, 2007, 02:48:28 AM
My DSL modem has a USB output though.
I've USED DSL since Jan 2002 and have never purchased a DSL modem.  My ISP provides the modem.  How about your ISP?

I don't know whether you can find any routers that connect to a DSL modem via a USB connector.  Are you sure that modem does not have both USB and a standard Ethernet port?  If it does not have a standard Ethernet port, you may need to get a modem that does have one to resolve this.Dear Spoiler,

I THINK the USB cable was good because it's plugged in

Dear soybean,

Yes, we "lease" or whatever it's called, the modem. The modem does use ethernet, but my computer doesn't.  That is why I was using the USB cable. But then I can't use the router, since there is no USB.

I decided to buy the USB to ethernet adapter, if the seller actually sends then I am optimistic it will work

It's weird that almost any modem has a USB port but no routers do  Fine, whatever, ethernet...Sounds like a plan.  Let us know how it works.

I've never used such an adapter.  I just took a look on tigerdirect.com and found this inexpensive one: D-Link - DUB-E100 - USB 2.0 10/100 Recertified Fast Ethernet AdapterHello, works all right. I'm back to the wireless connection though, because of cord length and because USB devices love to get loose and disconnect...

Solve : Browser connection timing out; possibly DNS related issue?

Answer»

im using my spare ethernet card now but im STILL getting the DNS error. at this point i DONT know what else to do, theres a small chance it might be the cable modem so ill see about getting a new one from my ISP.Click on Start, Run and type in cmd.
At the command prompt, type in:

ipconfig /flushdns

...and press Enter.

Type exit and see if it works now.doesnt work.Well i finally "fixed" it. not exactly a fix but more of a trick. i installed Microsoft's .NET FRAMEWORK 1.1 which creates a login prompt at the login screen instead of automatically logging you in. here i just wait for about 10 minutes and after i log in there are no CONNECTION errors. even the programs that never used to work now can access the internet without a problem like BF2 and Steam.

so thanks to all who replied and tried to help me fix this problem.

Solve : loosing connection, a lot?

Answer»

we LIVE in the middle of nowhere and get high speed internet from some little company that mstly does low speed stuff. We used to lose CONNECTION for about 5 mins-a couple HOURS every couple of hours, and we had the company come in and they took out some splitter and it seemed to work better but we still lose it a lot and i was WONDERING if maybe theres something we can do. We have the modem and my computer is connected to that and also the other computer is connected to that and there is also a WIRELESS route connected to it.Try to bypass router. Hook up your computer straight to modem.both computer are hooked up to just the modem, the wireless is also hooked to modem, we use it for laptop, NDS, PSP, etc. What kind of connection is it?

Solve : Can connect to LANs but not WAN?

Answer»

A guy brought me is TOSHIBA laptop (Vista) and he can connect to LANs but his card wouldn't pick up on the internet.  The card and drivers were working fine.  I even installed a Vista compatible wireless USB adapter and he still couldn't connect.  I diagnosed the connection every way i knew how including browser troubleshooting.  (internet tools etc.)  Everything looked good to go.  What could the problem be?I'm guessing next time I see him i should tell him to try winsockfix? What IP setttings did he had? What are your IP settings? He received a valid DNS IP? Like yours? Or he has manually configured IP settings?
Also, what physical address has his network card? ("ipconfig /all" -> run in command prompt)
Have you tried an alternative operating system (ubuntu, knoppix, something else) to see if it is a windows problem or a hardware problem?i'm not sure about his ip settings.  I don't have his comp anymore.  What should I look out for in the IP settings?  I don't know alot about networking. The basics you need to look for are:
You need the laptops default gateway IP address to be the IP address of the router, and the subnet mask needs to be the same (generally 255.255.255.0 and configured by DHCP - THATS the automatic IP address assigning system inbuilt into most modems). Check if you can access the modem via your web browser (i.e. http://192.168.0.1/). If you can't, then that's where your problem is (you aren't in the same IP RANGE or subnet mask). If you can, then check that you are set to go through it, and that the modem itself can connect to the internet. If that's all fine, then download a small linux DISTRIBUTION, burn it to a CD (make sure the linux is a live bootable distribution), and then test if linux can use the NET. If it can, then you have a software problem.

Solve : laptop and desktop unite?

Answer»

i have just bought a laptop and i WANT to connect it with my existing desktop.

i have wired internet connection but i have a wifi dongle which i plug into the desktop.
i am able to access the internet through the laptop using the wifi dongle but i want to be able allow the desktop and laptop share files and stuff.
so that the things on the desktop can be accessed through the laptop.

i have tried fiddling around with SETTING up networks in control panel but i cannot seem to get it to work.

thank you for any help. You have to connect those to the same network. I don't understand from your post if both the desktop and the laptop are connected through wireless or one is wired and the other is wireless, who has access to internet (or who doesn't).the desktop is connected to the internet with a wired connection. the desktop has a usb wifi dongle which sends out a wifi single and the laptop uses that to connect wirelessly to the internet.

i want to be able to share files and stuff.

thanks for your help and sorry for not making myself clear in my first post. Not a problem, in fact, really easy to sort out.

Use the Wireless Network Wizard included with Windows...J/d.

Or, log on to the dongle's configuration PAGE, and enable file sharing in that, and then right click the folders you wish to share, go to "sharing and security" and configure to share it, and sorted.

So I'm paraphrasing, and might have got the exact words wrong, but it is quite straight forward.

yesterday, you have to check user access rights to your COMPUTER, firewall SETTINGS. I don't have the time to go into details right now, try Sid's solution and tell us if you succeed.

Solve : Possible to set up dual routers??

Answer»

I'll try to be as brief as possible, if any additional information is needed, please let me know:

I'm currently using wireless CONNECTION, using a netgear ROUTER provided by time warner cable(rented it from the company). However, one person or the other often loses his connection and attempts to "fix it" by rebooting the router(in a primative way, by replugging the router itself).

I play games fairly often, and this interrupts my play quite a bit for obvious reasons. I'd be in a middle of fighting a dragon and screen would freeze, etc. So I'm wondering if it's possible to set up another router that I can control and connect to. The router's also located in another room and the distance is too great to use a wire to connect as it is.

If you don't want to read all that:

I lag too much using a wireless. I want to set up another router in addition to the one I use right now; Hoping to get a router of my own so I can put it in my room and use an ethernet cable to make it "wired" connection. Is this possible?Wireless connection has a much (MUCH) shorter range than the distance you may reach with an ethernet cat5e cable. wireless = maximum 30 meters to your router (almost 90 feet), wired = maximum 100 meters to your router (almost 340 feet).
If there are interruptions in service maybe the router is too weak to support the necessary connections and transfer rates and maybe it is necessary to buy a better router. How many persons are we talking about? I suppose it's not a company...
If you want your router, you have 2 cases: 1) replace the present router with yours (this means it will physically placed in the same spot as the router you use now) or 2) make a contract with your local ISP an have your own connection, Dragon Slicer Get out you manual or use google to determine how to use the uplink port. My explanation tends to be a bit cryptic. There are currently five people living in a three-and-a-half bedroom house at the moment. I half-expected wireless connection to suck when I moved in(If you hadn't guessed by now, I'm a college student), but not this much(some people play fine on a dial up).

Just two more questions:

When my connection status tells me that I'm connected to the access point(assuming this is the router), but internet couldn't be found, does this mean that router's not at fault and internet connection itself is lost briefly?(This is what's the problem the majority of the time, It'd say I'm connected to access point, but internet couldn't be found and I'd get disconnected for about 10 seconds, very annoying).

About getting my own connection(this question might be dumb): I thought "cable" connections used TV cable ports as transfer route for internet connection, doesn't this mean only one company may be used per household?  A better question would be... is getting my own connection as simple as calling up a company, saying I need a connection, and paying for the monthly service without having to request anything special?

Thanks in advance and sorry for being such a newbie at this

P.S. I just did a google search to find out "how to use the uplink port," but to be honest, I don't know what the heck it's talking about; It talks about HUBS, bridges, and twisted cable 5 or something... So let me ask a possibly retarded question: If I buy a router and just plug it up and connect it to a random TV cable port, would it work or not(assuming it won't from the responses I'm getting, but worth asking :X)The uplink port (cascading option) does not help if your first router has problems
surmise, uplink port is used for connecting two or more switches/hubs (not routers). It is called "cascading". It does not help you, you don't have at your location many switches/hubs (2-3 or more). You have a router.

When your connection status tells you that you are connected to access point and everything you said, it could be acces's point fault or WAN (internet) connection fault (this is the ISP part). You never know, but you may check it: connect directly to a computer, no "funny" router involved and see if the problem appears. If the problem manifests itself even without the router than it is something wrong with your connection and you can't fix it (it's ISP's job to fix this). If the problem does not reappear than the router is to blame.

If your network connection is through tv cable... Only one company sends signal through their cable. If you want a new ISP, they will have to get to you with a new cable.

Have you checked if these interruptions appear all the time? Or they do appear when everyone in the house is cramming to Internet? How many of you do use wireless? I suspect some use torrents and other "network bandwidth eaters". Quote from: surmise on November 13, 2007, 01:37:07 PM

If I buy a router and just plug it up and connect it to a random TV cable port, would it work or not(assuming it won't from the responses I'm getting, but worth asking :X)
You're saying, bypass the modem?  Nope, won't work.

I see Netgear has a support forum.  You might try it. Quote from: viking on November 13, 2007, 03:51:20 PM
I suspect some use torrents and other "network bandwidth eaters".

I know for a fact that some people do use torrents in this house... Having said that, the problem rarely occurrs late evenings(late as in 3AM when everyone's asleep for sure) or afternoonish. I also know that some of these people download TV shows NONSTOP for whatever reason...

So, a new question: Is there any way to restrict the amount of bandwidth they may eat up? I don't want anymore than anyone else, but I also don't want any less than anyone else either. I basically wish to "split" the internet equally rather than not-even-be-able to stay online reliably(I wish I had dial-up at times... this is almost a crime)If they are watching TV there is no interference with the network TRANSMISSION, they are separate things. The do not watch on the internet, right? They are watching TV shows that could be watched even when the internet connection goes down. They may collapse at the same time, but this is rare, right?
If the router you use does not have a traffic shaper solution included, you can't do anything. And I suspect your router being a "cheap" one, it does not have such things. "Cheap" is not necessarily a wrong thing; when we are talking about "expensive" routers we may reach the conclusion that they are "expensive" to set-up also At least from a time perspective, we might end talking about how much do you need to learn before being able to set up such an "expensive" equipment.

Solve : New Hardrive, Getting Connected?

Answer»

I just got a new hardrive today because my old one died on me. ANYWAY, none of the drivers/programs that came with my computer originally are on my new hardrive.

Anyway, I'm trying to connect to my cable connection, but I'm having trouble. I have no IDEA if it's because of missing programs or drivers. So any help would be appreciated.

You need to give us some more details.
I assume you REINSTALLED windows after installing the new HARD drive?
What version of windows are you using?
Did your computer come with a drive cd? If so have you installed the drivers from this disc?
And could you please provide us with the SPECS on the computer.

And finally please explain your problem in greater detail. How exactly are you having problems?

Solve : Internet Sharing Problems?

Answer»

Hi all, and sorry in advance if this question has already been addressed elsewhere.

Here's the dealio; I lost my internet connection, so I'm using my neighbors wireless (Per her consent of course) which is fine for my laptop. How do I go abouts connecting a cat5 from my laptop to my desktop so that I can share the wireless with my desktop? I've tried a few things, set a static ip on both machines, but for some reason, my computers wont connect to eachother, they both say a network cable is unplugged. Any ideas?

edit:  Also, i tried the microsoft directions for internet sharing, and when I go to set the  wireless to share I get this error:
Internet connection sharing can not be enabled.  a LAN connection is already configured with the IP address that is required for automatic addressing.

I know that's supposed to make sense, but I don't know what to do.Why not just purchase a wireless USB ADAPTER for your desktop? That's what I'm actually trying to avoid, I really don't have any money to spare at the moment, such is the reason for my internet getting shut off    Just trying to find a temporary solution till NEXT friday. You are trying to use ICS. In your neighbour's network (your laptop is a part of it) is used the network address 192.168.0. You can't use ICS on your computer further. You will have to find a routing program (I don't know an example) or a proxy, so you can set-up your own LAN and use another network address for your LAN. Instead of 192.168.0 use 192.168.1 or something else instead of that 0; or 172.16.0 network. Or 10.0.0 network. (You have to add another number after the last 0, so your computer would have an address like 172.16.0.5, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 or you may leave it as default).I can recommend you Jana Server (free to use at home). You won't be able to connect to internet with applications that don't know to use a proxy.

When you connect directly 2 computers, you have to use a cross-over cable. Did you?

My solution?
1) Your own connection to ISP
or
2) use a router and set it up properly
or
3) use a proxy server (a proxy program installed on your laptop - see Jana Server as example); you will have to use a different network address - if you don't understand, ask once more.

I won't tell a thing about Linux. If you knew Linux you would not be ASKING such questions here, you would not need our help. (This would be the fourth solution, and is equivalent to solution no. 2 or 3. from my previous list). Thanks for the response.  Well, I have a router that I can use.  I just thought that connecting my desktop to my laptop would be easier.  SO there is a way to plug my laptop that has the wireless connection, into my router using a cat5, and then plug my desktop into the router as well?  I suppose I should just try doing that straight up to make sure it doesn't work that simply  You will have to make some small adjustments on the router - IP address, DHCP address pool.

It is very easy to connect the laptop and the desktop together, in a simple network, but in your case you ask something else. The simplest solution for your case would be to buy a wireless network adapter and plug it in your desktop. You won't complicate with IP's, DHCP etc, you just plug the wireless network card, install DRIVERS, set up in the same way you set up the laptop and you are in your neighbour's network with both computers.Well, I have a wireless nic card in my desktop, but it's too far away from my neighbors house to get the signal.  The signal I get on my lap top is fairly low as it is, and I have to sit next to my window.  So, short of relocating my mass of hardware, getting this thing to work is my only other option.  What do you suggest I change my routers IP to and DHCP and what not?  Or is this just a lot more trouble than it's worth?  lol, I've got nothin' but time to figure this out  Thanks!

edit:  Also just realized that I probably couldn't have used a normal cat5 to connect the two machines anyway.  So the router fix is the only way to go Your router is wireless?Yeah, my router has wireless, that's what I usually use to keep my laptops and other computers connected, when my isp bill is paid, of course.  But I have enough cables to be able to plug everything in.  Or at least the laptop.  I'm fairly good with this stuff usually, i'm not really as dumb as I'm making myself sound, which is why this whole ordeal irks me even more lolSet it up as an access point. Disable routing functions, dhcp, let it to run only to connect your computers to your neighbour's network. You computers will receive IP settings from his DHCP server. I thought wrong when I told you about modifying router IP, I typed in a hurry, I gave you a wrong indication. Use your router as an access point.
Option 2) from my list should be "use a wireless router as an access point only". I'm sorry for my (huuuuge) error.
Good luck.
I have to go now.okay, so I'm n my router settings now, here COME some more stupid questions, how do I disable the routing functions?  DCHP has a drop down box, which option do I choose?  staticip etc. ?  Or just set the ip and subnet to my neighbors in the router settings?

Solve : Settings problem/conflicts/wi-fi help please...?

Answer»

Hello

(Firstly, I'd like to say that I'm very tired so I apologise if this post is as knackered as I am...)

I've been having connection problems for over a year now, whereby I have to continuously switch off/on my wireless router every 5-10 mins - but I've learned to LIVE with it. My ISP (Sky) aren't much help, the best they did was replace the router which made no difference. I'm USING a netgear router & desktop with an intel pro/1000 adaptor & a laptop using a wireless connection. Whether I use just one or the other or at the same time makes no difference.

Anyway, recently my son wanted to play his Nintendo DS on line which uses a wi-fi connection. It was quite easy to setup, I just had to change the routers security settings from WPA to WEP & then change the laptop's settings accordingly.

To my surprise, I have NOTICED that I am able to continuously play the Nintendo DS on line VIRTUALLY uninterrupted, which has me suspecting that it may be my settings with regards to my other connections.

So, is anyone able to tell me if the DS connection is a veasable way to verify that my connection is not the problem, or is the DS wi-fi connection just a completely different ball game? if the DS IS a way to prove that the connection is fine, is there anyone kind enough who can help me with regards to SORTING out my settings for my other connections?

My friends, I see a tiny twinkle at the end of my year long on/off connection problems tunnel... please show me the light!?

Just as the title says, my laptop won't connect. It will connect to my college's wireless network but will not allow me to go to the school's log in page. I just recently purchased this laptop about 16 days ago and it used to work fine until a friend of mine decided to change my homepage for me. Since my college requires me to log in, it DENIES me access to anything online but will show me that I am connected to the INTERNET. I have tried to get HP tech support (was a useless waste of an hour and a half) and have tried to get my computer tutors to help me out, but NONE could fix the problem. I have restored the computer to the first day of a restore point (didn't fix problem) and the windows diagnose didn't even work. A friend of mine has even typed in the login address that shows up on her computer but it still will not work. What can I do to try to get this thing to work?

I'm running on a Microsoft Vista platform, hp computer and am pretty NEW to this stuff. Any help would be appreciated in advance

If I'm not mistaken, Vista uses Defender, correct?

Check your settings there to make sure this program is not preventing you from connecting to the network at school.

Please verify that you are, in fact, using Windows Defender...or please specify your other security software installed on this computer.I don't think it's the anti virus software that's the cause this time, I can use my laptop at home, but not at school. I'm currently using AVG and I'm using the windows firewall.I didn't mean your antivirus software...I meant your firewall software.

Is Windows Defender installed on this computer?

You did say you have Vista, right?  If you can connect at home, but not at school...the problem is that you need to let your firewall know you are connecting to a different network and to allow the connection.  If you do not do this, then you will not be ABLE to connect to the school's network.

There may be other issues, but take a look at your firewall settings, first...I checked like you said and it's still not working.
It used to work at school, why would it change the firewall overnight?

Solve : Print sharing in windows me?

Answer»

New at this so please be patient with me . I have a DESKTOP with windows me a laptop with xp with service pack 2 and a laptop with windows vista. I have had the desktop and the xp for along TIME a friend of mine was able to get the xp to use the printer that is connected to the desktop how he did this I do not know .  Now I cannot get the vista to connect to the printer. The print sharing file is turned on I can share files with all of the computers and the xp will share the printer . I have notice that in the networks folder the printer icon is there but if I click on it with the desktop, it says that the printer is not installed and asks if I won't to install it and if I do it puts a new icon back in my printer folder as printer 2  but it still does not work. The printer is a hp officejet v40. It seems that the share printer program is not putting all the required files in the network folder for the printer to work. Sadly to say my friend as move away. I have been all over the internet TRYING to find a answer to this. I have dump the networks folder then REINSTALLED it I have dump the printer then reinstalled it but NOTHING seems to work. The vista sees the the printer on the desktop and all of the shared files and will connect to the desktop shared files and open them but tells me it can not connect to printer so that's why I think it is in the desktops printer sharing program but I know it could be a lot of things so that is why I am asking for help I know very little about computers.

Solve : Help me out!!!?

I'm Having PROBLEMS to connect my RG-45 connector with cable, I need a SIMPLE steps to understand it

Thanks eor will to put me true

Stephen SagacityI am not sure what you mean. Are you trying to connect a RJ-45 ethernet cable to a cable modem?

It's RJ-45, and what exactly are you trying to connect it to? Is it computer, via cable, to modem and you aren't getting a internet connection? Or is it comp to comp with no connection? Or what?pls! what I mean is how to set the collors, of the rg-45 for it to WORK properly
. Code: [Select]Man, rj-45.
For straight-through cable, on both ENDS you need to have:
1)ORANGE/white
2)orange
3)green/white
4)blue
5)blue/white
6)green
7)brown/white
8)brown

For cross over you have one end as explained before, and at the other end you swithch orange with green. You will have:
1)green/white
2)green
3)orange/white
4)blue
5)blue/white
6)orange
7)brown/white
8)brown

You can find these things explained all over internet, why do you need to ask us?Thanks to all I got it!

Solve : Can't connect on first time boot up?

Hi,

Just need some advise here. I am using windowsXP and every time after I boot up my PC I can't access internet. Its only after I restart my pc then I can login. I was thinking maybe it can't detect the modem-router on first boot then only after restart only it can detect. On first time boot I cannot access the modem at 192.168.1.1 also.

The first time boot up ipconfig /all are:

It SEEMS like on the 2nd boot the connection misses your router and connects directly? Also the first boot no Ip address seems strange. Not sure if node type should be hybrid, but i wouldnt know how to change that anyway.
Check your network adapter settings - it should be configured to automatic (no manual ip's anywhere).
Once you've checked that see if there is a router software upgrade available from the suppliers website. Or even download a more recent firmware if available (READ notes before installing).

Does the connection work properly when you remove the router? What are the ipconfig settings then?burton, don't fall into error by making assumptions about very clear defined things. Look here, the first response in a search page (altavista, google or other search engine): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/160177. It is no problem with the node type in our problem. (I apologize for my correction. More, I forgot about those settings and I had to search on internet to find a proper answer).

krashsun, and after your connection works? What is the windows ip configuration?
Maybe it is not necessary to restart the computer, maybe the command:
ipconfig /renew
will sufice when you have that problem.

I ask you about the ip settings after you are able to connect on internet to see what ip address your computer reports, if it is a private ip address (so your modem-router acts as a router also) or a public ip address (so your modem-router acts as a bridge).

Solve : My computer thinks it's hooked up to residential gateway.?

Answer»

I can't seem to get my network configured.  I formatted my computer, SET up the network with the wizard and it installed a residential gateway under network devices.  None of my other COMPUTERS can see my network, norcan I see the other computers.  Now the residential gateway icon is gone from network devices but the when I run the network wizard it AUTOMATICALLY comes up with a check in the box that says: THIS COMPUTER CONNECTS TO THE INTERNET THROUGH A RESIDENTIAL GATEWAY OR THROUGH ANOTHER COMPUTER ON MY NETWORK.  When I check the box showing this computer connecting directly to the internet and all other computers on my network connect through this computer, it cannot complete the wizard.  This tells me even though the residential gateway isn't listed in network devices, it still thinks it's there.  This isn't the first time I've set up this network, I just happened to build a new computer and had to re do it.  Can I somehow take the settings to default windows config and try to reset it up?  The ROUTER I'm using is Netgear WPN824v.2. Is it a wireless or ethernet connected network you are setting up?
Did you change the workgroup name in each computer to the same network name?
Are you using windows xp PRO?

Solve : Find Server Port?

how can confirmed that server port running on port 8080 ?

Thanks and regards

Code: [Select]netstat -a -n will list all currently open ports. If your server application is running the port it uses should be listed here. And if for some odd reason that doesn't work, you can scan the server either remotely or locally with Nmap.

-StephenThanks for response.

How can list the server port ? what is the command / steps ?

How can scan the server with Nmap ? Nmap is command ?
I RUN this command at rum prompt, it is not working

regards
Mateen
Are you on Linux or windows? If you LET me know I can give you detailed install and run INSTRUCTIONS for either OS.
However, if you have already installed Nmap, USE this command:

nmap -sS -P0 -O 10.1.1.1

Replace 10.1.1.1 with the server IP. This will give you a list of all the open ports, as well as the Operating System on the Server, and this is the quickest but effective way of doing it. The -P0 is a zero, not the letter 'O', whereas the -O before the 10.1.1.1 is a letter in the ALPHABET. This command can be run either from the server, or from a remote host.

-StephenThanks for you respnse.

Our server is Window 2003  R2, and client computer are window vista.

regards
Mateen
Ok, you will need to download and install
http://download.insecure.org/nmap/dist/nmap-4.23RC1-setup.exe

Then it should install a shortcut to your desktop. Then it's a matter of double clicking on that shortcut, and either choosing a pre-defined scan, or making your own with the options I previously stated. Any trouble, give me a yell (by the way, nmap is a lot faster on the command line in Linux, but this still works). This nmap install file will also install Winpcap, which is needed for this and packet sniffing.

Solve : Xbox 360 connect to laptop getting a Moderate Nat?

Answer»

Here is my problem I have a Xbox 360 connected to my LAPTOP the laptop is connected to my linksys  router wireless and I am using ICS (internet connection sharing)  to get internet to my xbox.

I have a moderate nat SETTING on my xbox because of this I cannot play in the same game as my FRIEND who is hard wired to the linksys router in the house.

Can anyone tell me how to configure my laptop so My xbox will not get the moderate nat setting.

F.Y.I  the problem is not in the router I have been down that path for many many many hours in phone calls to xbox and linksys.  The router is fine it has SOMETHING to do with the ICS and my lap top.

I don't know ANYWHERE else to go or anyone else to ask please help.

Thank you,
C.E.Read this. Apparently you can't get an "Open" status using ICS. The site explains how to setup bridging instead of ICS.

Solve : Network adapter: diagnosis if damaged? (Urgent pls!)?

Answer»
Hello,

Since I installed my router the browser only works when connected to this. When I connect my ethernet directly to the modem, I get a dnserror / page not found. Strangely though, on both connections my icq in the taskbar below works!

Is this a sign on my network adapter not working properly? I can ping to the localhost and IP address on both connections, but I can only ping to an external page (website) when connected via the router.

This may or may not help. Thought I would throw it out there, is SIMULAR to an issue I had.

Have you set your router from "Auto" to a  "DNS Addr from ISP"  Also in "My Network" Connection/ Prop/TCP Proto/Prop/Advance/? Make sure DNS is set properly and your default gatewy-WINS is in there also. The default gateway-DNS-DHCP are all usually the same Ex: 192.168.1.1

Hopes this may throw a little light at you. When you first installed your router, did you have to change settings in your modem?  I have DSL; when I first got it, I connected directly to the modem.  Later, I added a router.  When I did that, I had to call my ISP and they guided me through a procedure of "bridging" the modem.  After that, I could get an Internet connection by CONNECTING my computer directly to the modem, unless that "bridging" was reversed.
thanks for your help guys
at least it's another track to go by.

litespeed
My IP and DNS are assigned dynamically, aswell as the WAN IP address.
You say I should set a manual Domain Name Server (DNS) IP Address?

DHCP server functions are also enabled, does it need this? Dynamic routing settings are both on disabled (options: send / receive RIP)

I have a cable connection and only called the ISP to try and solve this problem. They said everything was correct their end and it had to be a problem at my end, possibly the network adapter faulty.

When I said that the network adapter works fine with the router attached, they said it could still be a fault with the network adapter because the direct connection istnt working?

I'm very skeptical of what your ISP said.  I believe that your network adapter either works or it doesn't, and I'd bet on that.  So, if it's working with your router, then it's working.  Period.

I'll ask again, When you first installed your router, did you have to change settings in your modem?

And, why are you going back and forth between USING the router and not using it?  Hmm thats interesting about the ISP comment, thanks

I couldnt change the modem settings as I dont have any modem panel in my browser. And on the router settings I have to keep everything to dynamical and no password or username needs to be put in like with a DSL connection. I am still not quite sure on what modem settings you think I could have changed, do you have an example? Otherwise I would say the answer is no, I only fiddled around with the router settings.
That is an advantage against DSL isnt it...  less settings need to be changed with cable?

The reason I am SWAPPING is because the internet doesnt work on a direct connection, only through the router, as I already said. I dont want the router any more because the connection fails after about 20-40min., but comes back again immediately (loses connection when playing games).

it could otherwise be the "ieframe.dll" file that is corrupt
Worth redownloading? : http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?ieframeNo, "redownload" not necessary.

By the way, games can connect to internet with or without router?
Have you tried an alternative browser? Opera, Mozilla Firefox?
If your ping works for remote servers, you have just a browser problem (I don't understand why, but it is just the browser that has gone nuts).

Network card defective? From what you just said, no, it's not broken, your network card is fine.Hi,

Thanks for your participation. Why is a replacement of ieframe.dll not necessary, is it not worth a try? Or is this too far fetched and a corrupted dll file not realistic here.

Yes I have tried firefox several times, same problem there. I just cannot connect to any external websites when connected directly via ethernet to the modem.... only with the router attached!.

Soybean, I think I answered your question? Quote from: viking on November 13, 2007, 03:54:13 AM
By the way, games can connect to internet with or without router?
So can web browsers, email clients, etc. soybean, you missunderstood my question (or maybe I was too evasive, I did not asked right the question) Maybe I should have asked something like:
Are you able to play a multiplayer game on internet when an internet browser does not work? Were you able to actually speak with somebody using ICQ when you  connected your computer directly to the modem or it was just the sign "I'm online"?
I would suggest you something else: maybe you need to restart the modem after you disconnect the router and connect the computer directly to the modem. Restart, I mean unplug the modem, wait a few moments, 30 seconds let's say, and then plug in the electric power.

soybean is partially right. I have seen a defective network card that worked "flawlessly" in the LAN, but it could not communicate through a router. A sign for a broken network card is when you see it's physical address to be the same character: FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF (replace F with anything you want). But a broken network card could present us a valid MAC. Quote from: burton on November 11, 2007, 05:43:56 AM
I can ping to the localhost and ip address on both connections, but I can only ping to an external page (website) when connected via the router.

1.  When connected directly to the modem, can you ping the numeric IP address of a web page, e.g. "64.29.201.21" for www.pcpitstop.com?

If so, you have connectivity to the web.

Can you ping the named address of a web site, e.g. www.pcpitstop.com?

If so, you have access to a DNS server that is correctly resolving the name to the numeric IP address.

If not, your issue is with DNS name resolution (i.e., you need valid DNS server addresses for the configuration of your TCP/IP connection.  As a test you could statically set your DNS server addresses to those of the OpenDNS servers:

    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220

And then ping "www.pcpitstop.com" to see if it resolves to a numeric IP address.

However, it's probably better if you fix your system to automatically pick up the DNS server addresses your ISP uses.

2.  If you can ping named web site address, but your browser can't reach it; you need to ensure it's setup to use direct connection and not proxy server.

3.  You don't mention the "ipconfig" command.  From a command window enter "ipconfig /all |more" and verify your TCP/IP configuration is correct.  Especially that you have valid DNS server addresses.

Use the "ipconfig /release"  and "ipconfig /renew" commands to reset the dynamically assigned values.  The "ipconfig /?" should provide help for the commands.

Ensure the "Obtain an IP address automatically" option on the "IP Address" tab of the TCP/IP Properties windows for your connection is selected.  There are other TCP/IP Properties you should check but the setup manual for your Modem or from your ISP should explain what these should be for your operating system.

4.  The default gateway for your computer must be on the same network as your computer (per the IPv4 address).

5.  The ethernet cable between your computer and modem must be wired correctly (straight-thru or crossover).  I'm not sure which is correct for this configuration.

6.  Router Issue.  A little off topic, but have you checked to see if there is a "firmware" update for your router?  Maybe it would resolve the "connection fails".

Quote from: burton on November 11, 2007, 04:32:45 PM
I dont want the router any more because the connection fails after about 20-40min., but comes back again immediately (loses connection when playing games).
Many thanks dahlarbear,

I have found the problem, it was because of Zonealarm. Even when I disabled it the connection wouldnt work, I had to deinstall it and then direct connection to the modem worked.

But still I'ld like to answer your questions, thats the least I can do ;-)
- no I couldd not ping the numeric IP addess of a web page (connection failed). The OpenDNS servers would have been a good option that I hadnt tried yet
- TCP/IP configuration under ipconfig /all was correct and I had 4-5 DNS server addresses.
- I had tried ipconfig /release and /renew several times without success
- "Obtain an IP address automatically" was set
- I had also done a firmware upgrade with no improvement

I still have 4 DNS Servers listed under "ipconfig /all", is that normal? Quote from: burton on November 16, 2007, 06:00:25 PM
I still have 4 DNS Servers listed under "ipconfig /all", is that normal?

I don't know.  All I can tell you is that I'm using Cox Cable broadband connection in San Diego, CA and they have always assigned me three DNS server addresses.  Currently I automatically pick up the following DNS server addresses:

    68.105.28.12
    68.105.29.12
    68.105.28.11

If I use a reverse lookup program on the numeric IPv4 address, they give me the registered information for that address.  If it appears to be related to Cox Cable, I assume it's valid.

Using "tracert" command on your DNS server addresses is always interesting.  It shows how many hops to the server and the delays at each hop.  You don't want alot of hops and you certainly don't need any bottlenecks in the route.

Solve : IP address/ Network?

Answer»

Can i know who used my Network through their IP? does it appear that IP....... used a specific network on that date and that time?If I understand what you are asking, you have an IP address that you are trying to determine which computer was using it at a particular date and time.  Right?

Is the address in one of these ranges?
10.0.0.0 -- 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 -- 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 -- 192.168.255.255

If it is, then it is an internal address.  That is, it is assigned by some router (or possibly by some PERSON) and it gets translated to an external address when accessing the internet.  In your case, it makes your job much easier because it PROBABLY MEANS the computer is within the building.

Otherwise, you may be able to get a little information by typing it into DomainTools reverse IP or similar sites.

You could also type it into the Quick Search box at BotScout to see if someone is using it to run a bot network script.

Lastly, note that most IP addresses are dynamically assigned these days.  That means WHOEVER had that address yesterday may not have it today.open a command line (assuming you're using windows) and enter "ping -a 4.2.2.2"
That will return the name of the computer you are pinging. Getting more information about the computer can be done, but may not be allowed for discussion per forum rules. Quote from: michaewlewis on July 20, 2010, 01:29:57 PM

ya, 4.2.2.2 is a dns server.... I guess I should have said "for example" after the suggestion.
The main thing is "ping -a" followed by the ip address

Solve : Broadband for VoIP connection?

Answer»

I am planning to subscribe on phone.com's services. Unfortunately, my connection is just 512mbps since I am just using a broadband. Do you think their services will still work well even if I have a slow connection? You will need to have a high speed (broadband) connection to use voice-over-IP.  A typical DSL connection will be rated at 600 kbps for the upload stream and 5000 kbps on the download stream.  You will NOTICE that your upload stream is almost always smaller than your download stream which becomes your limiting factor for using VoIP service.

Really, 600 bps is more than enough. By using moderate compression, a 64bps channel is good for voice only. I have a VoIP SETUP through Vonage and one thing that I want to share with you is that with the right router or with a DD-WRT flash to your existing router if it is supported to run DD-WRT, you will want to enable QoS ( Quality of Service ) and allocate bandwidth priority for the VoIP if you may be downloading, playing online games, or streaming content at the same time as a phone call. Otherwise you will have troubles with the voice getting choppy between yourself and whomever you are chatting with.

I dropped my bandwidth to 5/1 ( 5 Megabits/sec download and 1Megabits/sec upload to save money and set my Vonage to allocate 1Mbps download and 500Kbps upload when the phone is in use, and when the phone is not in use the 1Mbps/500kbps is returned to the bandwidth for everything else on my home network.

Prior to setting up QoS I was getting choppy voice from whomever was speaking with me or delays in responses etc as well as a ticking sound complaint from the person I was talking with.

This statement:

  Quote

Unfortunately, my connection is just 512mbps since I am just using a broadband

Seems wrong as for 512Mbps would be more than plenty, so is it 512Kbps instead? If it is 512Kbps is there a way to increase your bandwidth to AROUND 3Mbps download which should give you an upload speed around 768Kbps which would work BEST as a MINIMUM for VoIP and other devices needing the internet connection at the same time?  Also if you can get more bandwidth to that say 12Mbps download or better with 4Mbps upload or better you might not have to mess with QoS adjustments to have the phone operating without problems.

Solve : Windows 7, Networking USED to work, now it's not?

Answer»

We have 2 computers that were networked together. Shared files, and printer access. Used to work fine. Now, One computer can access MINE, but I cannot access hers, or the Printer anymore. it only works one WAY, BACKWARDS.. We have DSL, fed to a linksys router.. then the ethernet cables to each computer. There is a third computer plugged into the router, but it's strictly for internet access, and not INVOLVED. I have tried deleting and reinstalling the homegroup. no go. MADE sure password on both ends was the same. Where do i look next. the Troubleshooter says it all is working.. HA!

oh yeah, internet access on all three works perfectly. Firewall configuration is where I would look and permissions. You will want to look at this on the system that is refusing the shared connections.

Easy test if it is firewall related would be to disable the firewall on the 1 system that is refusing the sharing. If it all of a sudden STARTS to share then you know that you need to alter the firewall rules/permissions. The fact that you are behind a router it is safe to disable the software firewall on the 1 system as long as all 3 systems are clean and not ready to strike the other with a worm etc. Also, has anybody added new software of any kind on any PC on the network?

Solve : GMX is not loading emails?

Answer»

I have been using gmx.com for months without any problems - until today. When I logged in and requested mail the usual screen came up with the message "loadingGMXMail" but this time it just KEEPS going. I have retried several times today with the same result. So I tried sending an email to gmx from yahoo and that failed because the mailbox is unavailable. As I cannot contact gmx, what should I do?I don't know.  Works here. GMX is a very RELIABLE service and I am surprized that is stopped working for you.

On a HUNCH, see if you can open their site using a proxy. Once in awhile a few  IPs on the INTERNET get choked off by some local service providers.  I joined GMX in my daughter's name and it worked fine until I requested mail when the same problem occurred.I was using FIREFOX when this problem occurred. I have just used Internet Explorer and the problem disappeared. So Firefox was causing the problem for some reason, unknown to me.I have reset Firefox and the problem has been cured. But I have no idea why it happened. Thanks for the help. Thanks for sharing. This may help others.

GMX, if you are reading this, you need to make things easier for your clients

I'm sorry to hear about the problem that you're having.

When you say that you have removed services, what does that mean?

Let's try these things.

1) Is your internet browsing slow with only certain websites or all the time?
2) Have you defragged your hard drive recently? Although microsoft wants you to use their defrag tool, you get much better results from a third party tool. One that I use all the time, works great and is free, is asulogics disk defrag. This software doesn't have a manual to go along with it.
3) Do you have an antivirus software on your desktop? Run a scan.

Try these things out first.

Solve : Internet drops out then becomes limited?

Answer»

Hey everyone,

I RECENTLY moved houses and had a new BROADBAND network set up. I have a modem router, but this new connection requires a modem, and I have connected my router to the modem as my wireless connection.

Since I've moved, my PC which I had built for me, the internet has been dropping out every 20-30 minutes. Then my connection becomes limited. I've been searching around the internet for solutions and I've tried quite a few, but none seems to solve the problem.

I had to BUY a wireless network card for the PC since that was not included.

This is only happening on my large desktop PC. My laptop and iPhone can all connect fine without DROP outs or connectivity issues.

ThanksI would be interested to hear what you have tried so far before I go into a list of things to try.

Hi all,
I am looking for a remote support solution that WOULD work on a Linux desktop. I need a solution that I could use from my office to bring support to ONE of my customers in their LAN. I am not asking for VNC, which is a solution that only works when the PCs are in the same network. Does this solution EXIST? Thanks!
Here is some VNC SOFTWARE, Hamachi, or this http://www.realvnc.com/

Solve : Cluster Computing for Gaming?

Answer»

I have this idea for a gaming cluster and i wanted to see what people with a little more experience had to say about it. My idea was to have many(prob around 3-5) small mirco-atx boards with 3GB ram and a i3 processor and onboard graphics. and then one master node, full atx 16GB ram i7 processor and 2 Gpus. i would then have a linux os on top of that as the management os then have one(or many) machines that would be running what ever os. but my overall question is would the windows os get a performance BOOST and be able to run modern 3d videogames. also i would have the windows machine pass though one of(or both if possible) the GPUS.
Start at the mother end.
I mean LOOK at the games  you want to play.
Then plan a cluster that suits the games.
Find people who have already done it.
With GAMIN g, the game is everything. Hardware follows.
What you are trying to do is impossible.

A cluster like this works fine for a task that can easily be split up amongst several computers such as large mathematical calculations where each machine can work on a task for a while then send the result back to the central host.  Gaming on the other hand is real time and could not be split up in such a way.

Also THINK about the network connection between the machines, you will not be able to get a network connection fast enough to CARRY the raw data to and from the video cards.

Solve : Mechanism of internet?

Answer»

I am not able to understand how my computer connects to the internet and how internet works. I am using Micromax modem (MMX353G 3G USB modem) with aircel sim. I cannot understand how I get connected to the internet through my isp , SWITCHES and their router.
Some sites say that ISp maintain Ip routing table whereas others say that they maintain arp table.

I am totally confused. Please HELP me to understand the UNDERLYING mechanism of connecting to the internet (how switches , routers or ISps work and what they maintain to identify my computer on the internet (some sites say ip table where as other sites say mac address through arp table) and how packets are send and received)

Pls help me as soon as possible......Is this homework? Do you understand how the telephone system works?  Present day data connections are built an older technologies that were made  many years ago. Over time the decision was made that telephone system would have to be digital and the telephone network had to be a switching network. You MIGHT  need to read a couple of books that take you over a  80   100year period of development .

Telephone - First hundred years.

After that book was written, 1976, a lot of things began to happen fast.
The idea I wish to present is that the current Internet had its foundation in Telecommunications, which includes, Telegraph, Telephone, Radio and Television. Computers cam along LATE in the history.

Solve : Can't Connect to specific web site on any device connected to my router?

Answer»

Hello,

I have not been able to connect to a specific web site, "Apollo Lunar Surface Joural" from any device connected to my wifi router for a few days now.  I was connected up to it a few days ago on my desktop and all of the sudden when I clicked on a link on that page I received a can't access the web page message.  Ever since that time I have not been able to connect up on any device connected to my wifi router.

Things I have tried:

I tried accessing the web page on various devices both hard WIRED and via wifi that are connected to my router with no luck.
I tried turning off the wifi on my phone and I was able to access the web page, then I turned the wifi back on and I could not access it.
I successfully accessed the website from my work computer.
I did a ipconfig/dnsflush on my desktop computer and that did not fix the issue.
I changed the DNS settings on my desktop computer to the OpenDNS settings and that did not fix the issue.
I tired resetting by turning off both my cable "router" and my wifi router and letting sit for awhile before turning back on and that did not fix the issue.

Any suggestions on what to do to fix this issue?  I've thought about chaning the DNS settings on my router to the OpenDNS settings.  But a bit hesitant about trying that because not sure what affect that might have on anything else connected up to my wifi router (I have ALOT of stuff connected to my wifi router).  Also if it did not help by changing the settings on my computer, would it possibly help if I changed it on my wifi router?
One additional item is that I can access an archived version of the web site via the wayback machine website. If all websites work with exception to the 1 site. I'd go use another internet source and see if you can still get to it as for maybe the website no longer has it at that location.

If your able to connect to it from say Mc Donalds free open wifi but not able to from home then I would set your router back to factory by use of the push button and reconfigure it all fresh to see if that helps fix this. Thanks DaveLembke,

I did already use another internet source via my work place computer and also by my smart phone's by turning off the wifi and using the cellular data service.

I also contacted my ISP to see if they were somehow blocking the website, but they say it's likely my router and they can connect to the website from their end.  LOOKS like resetting the router to factory default is the next step (I was hoping to avoid something that drastic). If you have access to looking at how your router is currently set up you can take screen shots of all the settings if its highly configured and not just a default factory config with a different password. If you never had to configure it before though you wouldnt now other than a password change for admin of the router and wifi though.

I have had routers that were set up with all sorts of rules and forwarding etc and took screenshots when everything was configured properly so that the next time I need to factory reset the router, i could quickly look back at screenshots of the router config and get it back to how I had it.

One thing you might want to check into though is if the router has the latest firmware installed as for there are sometimes bug/security fixes for them and FLASHING a router with a newer firmware is usually very easy after first confirming that your router matches up to that firmware update. Some routers are by model and some are model and revision where a router with rev 3 cant take a rev 4 flash because they switched microprocessors through the production for example and instruction sets for a later processor isnt supported by earlier model processor etc as a general example of differences that can exist for a product line as one component that is critical and specific is too costly and engineering replaces it with a different cost efficient part that is specifically different than the original. Other changes can be like more memory added because say 32MB they realized was too small to implement a necessary change to the products firmware and so they might increase it to 64MB, so that flash that would fit a 64MB model of a newer revision wont fit on the older revision that has less memory.Wait.
Why did not the topic starter, Tthammondwis, name the web site?
 "Apollo Lunar Surface Journal"
Brings up at least five web sites that look like that.
Like this:
https://history.nasa.gov/afj/ap11fj/index.html
Or this:
https://history.nasa.gov/frame.html

Please explain. Not sure what you want me to explain???

The link I was referring to is:

https://www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/

However I can't connect up to either of the links you posted also. Here I have not problem with:
https://www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/

So maybe there is a firewall someplace that blocks that and related sites.
Where do yu live?
Who is you Internet service provider?
Have you asked your service provider?
I live in Wisconsin and my ISP is through Spectrum cable.  I did ask my service provider about this and they said they can access the site from their location so they think my router is the problem.

I recently tried setting my router to goggle DNS and that did not work.

A firewall may be the issue, but it would have to be at the router or upstream from that (cable modem?).  Because all devices that are connected to my router both hardwired and wireless are similarly affected.

So I looked up the manual for my router and here is what is listed relating to firewalls;

There is a SPI (stateful packet inspection) firewall which is set to prevent cyber attacks and validates traffic passing through the router.  It is set to on by default and is recommended to leave it on.

There is also a DoS (denial of Service) Protection setting and will be triggered when the number of packets exceeds the set level.  I will check this setting on my router.  Maybe somehow that protection got triggered on that site and thus the router is blocking it now?thammondwis.
Good work.
Now let us know the name and model of the router. And if you have a link to the PDF of the manual, please give it so others can follow along.  My router is TP-Link Archer C9 AC1900

A link to the manual:

https://static.tp-link.com/2018/201802/20180224/1910012337_Archer%20C9_V5_UG.pdf

I checked and the parental controls and access controls are disabled on the routerThe link does not work for me. Denied.
Is this  it?
https://images-eu.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/C1BY5pXTUbS.pdf
yes that is the correct manual
I tried connecting my laptop directly up to my modem and I can access the web site that way.  So based on all the testing I have DONE as I have detailed here in this thread, it appears as though my router is blocking access to this web site.  I just can't figure out why or how?Look for parental controls.
Some place in tghe router is a liost of forbidden websites.

Solve : Logging ISP Network .. Any suggestions?

Answer»

I WOULD LIKE to log my connection to the internet and was wondering if anyone had any software suggestions. I like www.speedtest.net 's ability to give download/upload stats. On a good day i am getting 20mbps down and 4mbps upload. I was thinking it would be neat to be able to log this for say 24 hours to know what my upload and download speeds are. Anyone know of a software that might be able to do this. I was using a batch program that someone here helped me out with a few years back, but ping logging and writing the response times in ms although does show latency doesnt show just how bad the connection is. I have had at times where my connection has been down to just about 2mbps down and 4mbps upload. Rebooted all my hardware and am DETERMINED that its not at my end, but MAYBE comcast throttling my connection down or heavily congested. I thought it would be neat to document this before contacting comcast with complaint with data to prove the situation.I don't know of anything that can do what you want, but have you had a look at the logging FEATURES of your modem/router?

EDIT:  Is something like this what you're after?

Solve : Constant Disconnections?

Answer»

Whenever I do anything that requires a constant internet connection such as playing League of Legends or STREAMING Twitch, I get constant ping jumps/lag spikes.
When I play league, I usually have about 30-40 ping, but every 20 seconds or so it will randomly jump up to at least 5000. After a few seconds, it will fall back down to normal, but then 20 seconds later it will jump way back up. When I watch twitch, the stream will freeze quite frequently and take a few seconds to reconnect.
I'm pretty sure that it's SOMETHING with my computer because when I use a laptop at the exact same spot as my computer, this never happens.
How do I STOP these constant lag spikes?
Any help would be appreciated.hi Sirchanv

you have to enable qos packet sheduler in LOCAL group policy editor (under administrative templates - network)

enable and change the VALUE to 0 (zero)

Hope this is helpful

Solve : WiFi running slow, disconnects.?

Answer»

So I have my laptop that RUNS on WiFi from my modem. My desktop is hardwired to the modem. The laptop is right next to my desktop, and subsequently my modem so it's not a length issue.

A few days, a kid on Skype got mad and said he'd "hack me once he found my real IP". I figured whatever, but then I've been having the issues.

I tried pinging a few sites, either I'll see it go anywhere from 30ms to even 255ms. Else, it will simply say "Ping request could not find host reddit.com (or whatever site) PLEASE check the name and try again."

My WiFi typically wont disconnect or go to "Limited" during this. But it will lose connection from Skype and Steam and hang on retrying, and during this time no page will load. It will either hang on loading until bringing me to a page telling me it cant connect, or I've even see it say it cannot connect automatically.

I've tried rebooting the modem and it doesn't seem to really matter either.First of all, if someone is performing a DDoS on you, you can get rid of this issue by writing down your IP that the ISP gave you as a lease and then shut your modem off and contact your ISP to reset the lease for the modem so that you will get a different IP. After this you turn your modem back on and it is given a different IP address if the ISP follows through and resets the lease associated with your modems mac address bound to your account. You can then confirm this by checking that your IP has changed. A good website to check your IP address is the following: http://www.whatismyip.com/

I have some doubts that someone would have a problem with you so badly that they would go to this measure, but if this was the case, this would FIX this DDoS issue.

I am curious as to what your pings are to www.google.com from both the desktop and the laptop. They should be all around the same response times. Google is what i use as a reference when looking for connectivity issues outside of my ISP's domain. If a ping to my ISP is fast and yet google is showing issues then I know that eithert Google is having issues, the internet itself is having issues, or my ISP is having issues with its backbone to the internet.

Lastly, in order to pull off a DDoS attack, this person would have to have access to many systems at their command to target your specific IP address. Most threats like this are ill supported to follow through and target an IP address unless they have HELP from OTHERS who want to get involved and also target you. Generally a home user is not the target of such attacks and they are targeting a business or identity that causes big problems and draws attention to a group who pull off the attack.

I assume you have already scanned these systems also for malware etc and they are both clean?

Solve : Internet Lag Issues - Windows 7?

Answer»

When im at my girlfriends house for some REASON using my laptop the internet gets very slow for no reason and gaming I get lag, one minute I wont be lagging and webpages will be loading very fast and a few seconds later I get really bad lag and also webpages are extremely slow to load.   My girlfriends laptop and all other PC's in the house don't have these problems just mine.  Also at my own house my laptop works with internet no problems at all.  also ive plugged an ethernet cable into my laptop and it works fine, so its definatly a wireless fault.  Just did a speed test, im GETTING 0.203 MBPS where as my girlfriend is getting 9MMBPS so definatly something isnt right.Well, it would be helpful to KNOW what laptop you have, and any other specs you have on it, Otherwise, it is kinda hard to know what hardware could be messing up. First thing that came to my mind is that maybe she has both a public connection, and a private/hidden connection. GENERALLY, people don't allow the public connections as MUCH bandwidth; and maybe you were connected to the slower public connection.

Solve : my router has intermittent time-out, suddenly.?

Answer»

My set-up: router connected to modem, my pc connected with a cable to the router, 4 other family wireless devices connected to the wireless.

situation: intermittent connection coming from the router, i lose connection several times a minute, ive been on a loop of 10 second of connection then like 15~ seconds of downtime SINCE this morning.

i ping my default gateway, the rotuer, 192.168.1.1 and i see this intermittance because it EITHER pings and works 100% or times-out.

i can access the internet just FINE if i plug my computer directly to the modem.

i tried doing a power cycle. i havent made config changes to the router.

i tried replacing the cable between modem and router with a known-good UTP cable with no effect
What make of router? How old is it?
Have you unplugged the power from the wall plug and waited 10 min?
Also, there may be a reset switch that requires a paper clip or small object. Doing that will put all settings back to default.

It is a common problem. That is the kind of answer you get from Tech support. The engineering department does not want to go back and rebuild the thing. Water under the bridge.anyone looking at this from Google, the router worked a bit but then was having way more downtime the next day.
the guy that pays for my internet lost patience and bought another routher, and since then the internet is having no problems.
