Solve : Really slow wireless connection?

Answer»

The router SEEMS to work fine with the desktop PC on the network connected with Ethernet cable, but perhaps the wireless part is faulty
However, I don't have the time or money to replace the router or wireless card as I'm on a very LIMITED income and any inconvenience I caused replacing the router would not go down very well with the other people on the networkTry borrowing a wireless networkcard from someone or borrow an entire computer with a wireless network card.

Make certain you test with the bare minimum, no security and no encryption.I'll TRY and borrow one, but I'm not sure tht anyone I know would have one, or let me borrow it if they did have oneI don't think you have much of a choice.

Although you could start from square one, set everything back to factory default settings and rebuild your wireless network ?

Make certain your RALink SOFTWARE isn't set to power saving mode, by the way.I'll try and borrow a wireless computer/notebook from someone...actually think I know someone who could help me out there
RALINK software in CAM (Constantly Awake Mode), not power saving
Anyway thanks for all the help, I'll try and get a wireless computer or notebook on loan, MAY not be able to get it for a few days or a week or two
Cheers
P.S. seems better again now...weirdAre there any devices that could be interfering?

Try using a different channel, each channel operates on a different frequency. No interfering devices nearby that I know of, will try a different frequency later

Solve : Problem: Sharing Win2k Resources?

Answer»

Problem: Sharing WIN2K Resources

I have multiple XP systems that utilize the internet and share resources through a router.  I have recently added a Win2k system to the network and I am able to access the internet fine once I set it up with a valid IP.  Unfortunately I cannot see shared drives or resources on the Win2k machine from my XP machines nor can I access the XP machines from the Win2k machine.

I am sure Win2k is a wonderful OS for complex networks, however, it is over kill for me and I can’t get this whole permissions, sharing, security, and etc thing to work it seems.

I have set the Win2k machine to the same workgroup as my other PC’s.  The XP PC’s are DHCPing 192.168.1.1xx addresses with a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and a gateway of 192.168.1.1.  I set the Win2k machine to use the static IP of 192.168.1.100 with the same subnet, gateway, and a DNS server of 192.168.1.1.

The only components installed with the Win2k Network Connection are: Client for windows..., File and print sharing..., and TCP/IP.  At this point, on XP machines, you should see each other (without the additional sharing/security SETTINGS).

I have tried VARIOUS settings to allow for the Win2k and XP machines to see each other, but none has worked.  Rather than tell you what I have done, I would rather just do it from scratch correctly.

By the way, while I don’t THINK NetBEUI is needed unless you are using a pre-Win2k Windows OS, I turned it on for GIGGLES.  I did notice that the workgroup now listed my XP machine, however, when I connect I get the “network path was not found” error.

Any help would be appreciated.

EstebanFirst question: is there a firewall enabled on the Win2k machine?

Solve : Networking wired and wireless computers.... HELP?

Answer»

I have three wired desk top computer that are wired to my Linksys WRT54G wireless router.  I have two wireless lap tops.  Everything is Windows XP EXCEPT one of my lap tops, that one is Vista.  I want to be ABLE to network my computers and be able to share the printers that are on two of the desk tops.

During my many attempts, I have been able to network the hard wired computers but can never get them linked with the lap tops.  At this point, I think I need to start over.  So, first how can I undue any networks I have on the desk tops?  Second, starting over..... what can I do to link all of my computers and share the printers.

I have been going with the set up to CREATE a small office or home network.  But I can't set up the wireless that way.  I tried using the wireless network setup wizard, too.  That seems to disable my wireless set up and I have to call linksys to get me back to using my wireless connection with my lap tops.   Everything works GREAT alone.... just really need to link them.....
Thanks,
MikieWhat firewall program are you using on the Vista laptop?

Also...

Just setup the home network as you did previously...during the setup, you'll be asked if you want to enable file and printer sharing...

For those computers that have a pronter attached, you'll want to allow this.

Configure your wireless connection so that the wireless laptop can connect to the router...

The problem here may be that your laptop's firewall is preventing the connection to the network...the other computers will not be able to connect if the laptop is blocking the networked computers.

Again...it would be good to know the firewall the Vista laptop is using...Thanks Saviour......... I am using Norton as a fire wall on one of my laptops with XP.  The lap top with the vista is my wifes and I haven't tried to network that yet.  So, I have deactivated the firewall on my laptop and I still cannot link it to the hardwired computers.

Should I be following the wizard for setting up a small home or office network.  But then it doesn't seem to recognize this computger (the laptop) when I do that because it isn't plugged in.
?
MikieI'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you...I apologize and will try not to let that happen again.

Here's a good read for you:  How to Setup a Home Network

Within that guide is a link to download and install Microsoft's Home Network Guide.  This program will easily HELP you configure your home network and all you have to do is answer a few questions...or fill out a couple of fields.  Not only does it tell you what you'll need to setup your home network, but it will also give you step-by-step instructions for configuring your home network.

Give us a shout if you're still having issues with the setup...Thanks, Sav.......

If I have a problem, I'll be back in touch......  Or I'll just call the Geek Squad.  LOL!Hopefully, the guide helped...

I'd like to know, please...so keep us posted...

Solve : help please.. ICS?

Answer»

When I go to the properties of my internet connection, then to advanced, I have the internet sharing option, and I can enable it. The problem is, there is SUPPOSED to be a pop up menu where I can choose which network I want to grant access to... But it isn't there. Anyone know how I can get it there?  It's the only last thing standing in my way of ICS and I'd love to get it going.   Thanks    -ShaneActually if you configured at LOCAL Area Connection which the NIC then there's nothing to pop-up. It will only pop-up if you configure on WAN miniport or the PPPoE. So that's ok no worries.Question: how many network cards do you have in the COMPUTER with ICS enabled?
If you have 2 (one for WAN - where comes the cable from ISP, one for LAN - cable to the other computers in you network) there should be not a problem.
If you have 3 or more network cards, ICS will grant access to only one of your networks. On WAN network card you will have the IP given by your ISP, on another network card you will have the IP 192.168.0.1; you can't have 2 network cards on the same computer with the same IP, so only one network will be able to use the shared connection. If you LAN consists on many networks you wouldn't ask that question, we will be talking about Routing and Remote Access (or simply put, we will be talking about a router, with Linux, Windows, does not matter).ok well ya'll got me confused now.. lol  so let me just tell the whole story. For a while now i've been trying to figure out how to share this computer's dialup internet with my laptop, using bluetooth dongles and IVT BlueSoleil. (I know, i'm crazy for wanting to share a dial-up connection, and i know it's gonna be really slow. so lets just skip all that... lol) Both computers can connect to the bluetooth PAN and on my laptop i connect to lan access and it connects the LAP connection, but still no internet. So i decided to try it the other way AROUND.. i connected my laptop straight to the internet, and i went to the internet properties and enabled sharing, and there was a menu asking me which home network i wanted to use it or whatever. I chose the bluetooth pan. So then i connected this computer to the lan access, it connected and had internet! But like i said, i need this computer to do the sharing, not the laptop. So here we are at my problem... When i go to my internet properties on this computer, i have the internet sharing option, but there is no menu of what network i want to let use it. Thats what is holding me back                   thanks  can anyone help??   nevermind, i finally got it

Solve : New Wireless router needs a good range.?

Answer»

We are about to move to a bigger house for the moment we are using a BEFW11S4 and a WAP54G.
But we need a bigger range and we only want to use 1 router.
I was thinking of WRT300N but I can't find the range of the router.
There are 2 floors and it has to cross 4 walls and a ceiling and it has to go at least 50m including with those walls?

Would the WRT300N be good enough to do the job??

Thanks in advance

Jonas Quote

There are 2 floors and it has to cross 4 walls and a ceiling

This sounds as if there are two seperate buildings. Why does the signal have to penetrate two floors, four walls, and a ceiling? Well the router will be located in the basement. as the modem is placed there and that way we don't have to use a long cable. with 2 floors I mean 2 ceilings.
And no it is for 1 building.

Would the WTR300N be good enough??

Thanks for the reply.Changing routers would probably make no difference at all. In your situation, a couple of high gain antennas might be the way to go. It is possible that you might not have to change anything. Complete your setup and test it before buying anything additional.IF the signal isn't strong enough, then you can get repeaters, or place the router more centrally. Yes it would make difference as a N signal has an 4 times bigger range as a G and a B has got an even weaker signal.
And the routers that we have for the moment aren't going to Sufis as they are just strong enough for this locating and the next one is going to be bigger.

Well that was the thing I was trying to prevent.

Jonas

BTW: I'm not looking for a cheap solution I'm looking for the most friendly to use solution.

Thanks for the reply'sSee the comments on http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/wirelessproducts/a/howtobuildwlan_3.htm about Wireless Signal Boosters.I don't want signal boosters I want 1 router that has a strong signal that is good enough for the whole house.

Jonas

Still: thanks for helping!I doubt any forum members have ACTUALLY DONE a comparison of routers for signal strength.  I think you're going to have to just get a router and, if you find the signal is not strong enough, then you need to get a booster.

Anyway, what's the problem with getting a signal booster?  If your FAMILY is going to be living in a "house" that spans 50 meters, that's not a house, it's a mansion, and your family is wealthy.  So, you can surely afford a booster.Well its not 50 meters but OK it is a bit large.
But that is a radius with some extra and the end of our garden. (still it would only be max 30m but if it ranges 50 then the signal is still quite strong at 30m.
Its not the problem of buying a booster the problem is placing them without they would be unseen.

Jonas

Thanks for the info.Personally i would hard wire that Castle and do it RIGHT...Well it is wired too but we all use laptops and then it is also handy to have wireless signal.
Its not that big as you all describe it.
Its just a little bigger than a normal house.

Jonas

I've been reading a lot and I found out that the wrt54G has a stronger signal as the wrt300n.
And I have a wrt54G at my mums house I think that will be strong enough I just hoped that the wrt300n was better as it is newer.
So problem solved.

Solve : Wifi connection problems?

Answer»

Hi,

I am using a ASUS laptop.  I currently cannot connect through wifi, although I can see different wifi networks are being detected as full strength.

My laptop says the word "limited".

How do I fix this?  and is it because of my Kaspersky virus protection software?

Any prompt replies would be greatly appreciated.

ThanksHow long have you had this problem? Was it OK before you installed the AV?
In windows the term 'limited'; does not detail the nature of the problem. It might mean the security password in not correct.  It could mean hardware trouble.
I dont recall this problem before the Kaspersky virus protection was installed about 12 months ago.  I haven managed to AVOID the problem by using a dongle with wireless connection plugged into the computer through a USB connection.

It is definitely not a password to the wifi network problem.  It says I'm connected but it says 'limited' and wont let me use the network.

I have been told by a couple people that it is most likely caused by the Kaspersky software but nobody can tell me how to fix it.  One guy said I should 'restore default settings' at the bottom right on the screen... Not sure if that is a good practise..

Have you any suggestions?  Anything would be appreciated... CHEERS Quote

Please explain this. So you mean that you already have a workaround? If so, you already have the best solution.  I've had this problem before and it is usually an IP address problem . I would just assign an IP address manually in the appropriate range instead of finding out why it would not obtain one automatically . Just a thought .My laptop couldn't connect to the wifi, too. The wireless connection even disappeared. I didn't use Kaspersky so I think it was not due to Kaspersky.
Maybe you should change the driver, I think. Quote from: Yangmin2 on January 15, 2015, 10:08:57 PM

Kbit  - We don't provide maybes in support, what happened with you may not have happened to him, please refrain from posting speculation. Not a problem but I did say just a thought and I have had the limited problem on many computers and it was usually a IP problem  so I take my two cents worth back . Sorry for the last reply , a little under the weather today . My advice for a fix to the limited or no connectivity problem for those of us not schooled in the mysteries of networking is as follows :

 1. Open network properties , find IP protocol tab
 2. Change IP address from automatic to manuel
 3. Enter 10.0.0.1 subnet 255.255.255.0 , hit apply or ok
 4. Let computer do a restart and you will now have the same problem
 5. Go back to same tab and change back to automatic , hit apply or ok , restart computer and hopefully you are connected { maybe password or whatever security you use will need to be entered again}

I believe this problem is often caused by some settings file getting corrupt or DCHP lease expiring on the router or whatever and these steps renews stuff , this is an easy fix and if this doesn't work just keep looking and asking .

Solve : How to share folder to a lan and a lan&internet but not all viewable??

Here's what i wish to do with my network:-
1. Make a computer(A) as a SERVER by sharing it's folder to network, and also make this computer cannot access to internet.
2. Make 5 computers(B) that can access shared folder at (A) and can see each others in network, but not internet.
3. Make a computer(C) that can go internet, can access the shared folder at (A), but not seeing others computers(B) in network.

I having a router and a switch.

Computer (A) having single port built in MB network card.

Any suggestions how to do this? Please HelpRather than GIVER you a specific answer, I will refer you to a general document about networking and other things in Windows 7 that limit the POWER of users.

Quote

n this first lesson you will learn what a user account is and what the most important characteristics of a user account are. Then, we will go into detail about the types of user accounts that are available in Windows ...

... NEXT, we will explain the concepts of user groups and permissions. As you will see, these concepts are important when sharing with others on the network.

You can create users on each computer that can only get into some areas or all areas of the network. Of course,  your must assign passwords to prevent users from doing a log-in to  an account above their level.

An alternative is to use the features of your route. However, routers differ in this area. That is why I have recommended a limit of  privileges of the users as a more flexible and easy to do method.

Also, Windows 8 and Windows 7 differ is some details about users accounts. But either have enough control that you can limit the how users connect to the network.

Anther way is to limit which browsers they can use and modifying the browser for that user. Patents do that for their kids.

Solve : User replication between Servers?

Answer»

Hi,
We have 2 Windows based Servers in our office ...
1. Windows 2008 Standard 64-bit SERVER which is the DOMAIN controller
2. Windows 2008 R2 64-bit which is another server in the same Domain.

We have synced the Active Directory of the Main DC with the other server. EARLIER , when we would create a user in the main DC , it would get reflected in the other server ( since AD is synced ).
Of late, we have noticed that when a user is created it takes awful lot of time to get reflected in the other server. When we went to the Active Directory and TRUSTS module and did a Force replication , still nothing happened.
Would be glad to receive help on this topicThere is a time interval in which the sync happens. With our servers they would resync EVERY 15 minutes between each other. Is it taking longer than 15 minutes?

Solve : Detecting an RDP connection?

Answer»

Hello!
My question is short and SIMPLE but I appreciate it if you answer with details, not only YES or NO )

When I surfing and login to websites with VPS, can a website detects and finds out (monitors) that I’m using a VPS,(I'm connecting to VPS via an RDP connection)?

Thanks!
They can see traffic on port 3389 and see when your connected and from what IP etc.

If you connect to a VPS with Remote Desktop, and then use a browser within that VPS, the websites being visited won't see any RDP traffic.

If you surf from a VPS you are not anonymized, If you are doing things you don't want tracked then you will be tracked, but websites won't be able to detect it without a human involved in tracing. (It's not like, DETECTING adblock, for example).

Thanks BC_Programmer, well it means that all traffic goes through VPS (RDP connection) and all data(information) that websites may have from me ( like IP, DNS, etc. ) is for my VPS system not for my real system and IP, right?

Is there a term of service that disallows VPS or RDP?

This is odd that your trying to hide activity even if not illegal.

If you use an alternate port config you can connect thru and make for guess work for a web host admin as to what your doing, but fact is that if they look they will see traffic and if they look further they will see what your doing since they are in full admin control of the servers and if they are doing their job properly they are constantly monitoring it to ensure 99.999% up TIME to you the customer that is using their service. So there is no way to completely hide activity. When you connect they can look and see a connection established when and how long and what ports and if they have a packet logger they could even see what keystrokes were passed to their server etc and piece together your activity.Based on your previous thread about DNS servers and now this it certainly does look like you are trying to hide something.Trying to hide something is not an illegal work and it's a kind of privacy.
Anyway, thanks for all answers. All you are doing by using a VPN is MAKING it more obvious to people watching that you are trying to hide something.  I also wouldn't say that routing all your traffic through some random external VPN server improves privacy, it's just another point at which your traffic can be sniffed.  Also not sure what you are doing with RDP.The issue is that I'm talking about VPS not VPN. Thanks. Quote from: ad2066 on December 05, 2015, 10:23:23 AM
...
Some, even many government agencies do not agree. If you hide your activity, they suspect you are a criminal.  There are examples of that every day.Well, in that case a website owner can probably get a reasonable idea if you are using a VPS by looking up the IP address as it would come back to a VPS provider/datacenter rather than a regular residential ISP.

I still fail to see how browsing from a VPS does anything towards your "privacy"

Solve : 2 NIC 2 Ethernet but only want one active at a time.?

Answer» HELLO,
I am using windows 10. I have 2 domains, both are closed networks which i wish to manage from one PC. Each domain goes to a NIC but I do not want both active at the same time. I do know that i can go in and disable one or the other NIC's manually; but is there a WAY to do it with software or hardware(kind of LIKE a KVM for for your network).
Thanks

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]I did a setup as a fail over that powered a switch and killed power to another switch as a gateway redirect with 3 network adapters once, switching the 2 of the 3 with one on and the other off but not both on at same time. I used this web power switch to turn on and off 5-port gigabit switches. http://www.digital-loggers.com/lpc.html

I would have a service running that would perform the switch over communications or manually perform this through a web browser remotely.

Later I found out that I could also USE an automation macro on the server that when a issue was detected it would run the macro and switch it over. And bought JitBit Macro Creator which allowed me to record an action and compile it as an EXE and call it from a monitoring service to execute and perform the switch over. https://www.jitbit.com/macro-recorder/

The service I used for the switch over was http://www.downloadsource.net/1844/AlertPingPro/ in which I bought a licensed copy. On alert condition you can have it call to an EXE.

I am good for rube goldberg solutions.  Quote from: airabas on November 13, 2015, 11:19:20 AM

I'm not flash with networking so i ask kindly to dumb it down just a tad for me, im not sure what could be causing this if its a setting on my computer or the modem or switch or bad hardware, i would really appreciate someones help

also on a side note i started looking into this due to high ping in gaming, but my internet still maxes out on speedtest.net to 110Mb/s down and about 2 up with 8 ms of pingYour internet is doing OK.

My internet speed are good, but they tend to go down and a second or so and come back up, also im getting the same ping as a friend i play online games in and he is on adsl 2 the a less then average connection.

192.168.0.101 is the ip for the switch im not sure is i have set it up right or not How many people share your connection?
Why do you need a 24 port switch?
Is the switch in the network tree?
For best performance you would use only the modem and your computer. Any other device on the local network has the POTENTIAL of causing lag in the network if it is not working right.
The ping results would suggest that the switch is not running at full speed.
What sort of latency do you get when pinging another device connected to the switch instead of the switch itself.  The CPUs in switches are very basic so it could just be that the switch itself is slow to respond to pings but the rest of the devices on the network are fine.  If you are getting 8ms ping to the 192.168.0.1 when connected through the switch then the switch is working fine. thanks for your reply, im getting <1ms ping to my modem which is connected to the switch so i have a feeling your right.(my thinking was i dont know much about networking so it has to be some setting iv done wrong haha)
So would a switch like this with a decent lag to ping affect my ping in online gaming? No, if the latency to your modem is fine (as it is), the switch is not slowing down the connection from your PC to the internet to any noticeable level.

Just took a look at my network which has a pretty decent switch (HP Procurve 1800-24g) - Pinging the switch from my router gets around 6ms latency, pinging my home server from the router (which is connected via the switch) gets <0.2ms latency.  The difference isn't as drastic as yours but it does still show that the switch responds to pings much slower than a full blown machine on the same network. To try to explain this better - When you ping your "switch" you are ACTUALLY pinging a separate management device inside the switch, this can be thought of as another computer connected to the switch, just that it's internal.  The chips inside the switch that actually provide the network switching don't themselves have an IP address.  Even if the switch's management device is slow to respond to pings, this doesn't reflect on the speed at which the switch can route packets - You can have a regular PC that is really slow to respond to pings connected to the switch but this doesn't mean that all traffic routed through the switch is also slowed down.thanks for clarifying i might replace my coax into the house in this case if the switch is ok

Solve : Tracing the owner of a Wifi network?

There is a particular Wifi network which is CONTINUOUSLY on, name is **, which is used by

hacker(s) to hack into laptops and desktops.

This particular network is suspect because unlike other networks like Zyxel , Draknet which

Same as any other way, by their IP address.
This site is GOOD for that: http://tracert.com/trace_exe.html (and shows your IP) Quote from: tads on November 28, 2011, 11:34:24 PM

False.  Every wifi network I connect to is on 24/7 - at home, at work, at hotels, etc, etc.

What EVIDENCE do you have that this network is being used as the LAUNCHPAD for cracking attempts?

Solve : Port Forward and Gaming Server problems?

Answer»

Hello!

I have had SUCCESSFUL gaming servers, with people successfully joining them and playing in them, of course that means that I have my ports successfully forwarded and I have that also done, but few days ago, I had some SORT of... virus attack... my PC restarted 2 times without a warning and the PC went horribly slow, but thanks to your virus removal guide, I have removed the viruses, but sadly my gaming servers don't work anymore, nobody can't join them, except me with my LAN address 192.168.0.*78 and the port checker also says, that the ports are not forwarded, which is very odd since the routers homepage shows that the ports ARE forwarded. So, what to do? Why don't the servers work? The ports are forwarded...

My router is D-Link DI-604 with Russian Firmware.
My PC is Windows 7 Ultimate, 8GB RAM, i5-2500k and ATI HD 5770.
Someone recommended me to repair my OS with my OS disk, but sadly I have lost the disk since I moved out of my old APARTMENT

Any help?Hello,
Make sure that you have DHCP enabled on your router. Quote from: luck of the irish on November 30, 2011, 12:32:07 PM

Hello,
Make sure that you have DHCP enabled on your router.

I have it enabled but not static DHCP.The D in DHCP stands for dynamic, which means your IP address will frequently change depending on how your ISP sets up their configuration settings.  Some IP addresses can be designated as static, but it's the exception RATHER than the common practice.

You mentioned you have Russian firmware in your router, so I'm guessing you are in Russia.  I'm in the US but generally most ISPs operate the same way world wide.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_Host_Configuration_ProtocolWell, any suggestions why anyone can't join my servers? I mean the ports are forwarded just like before and before, people could join the servers.

Heres a pic of my forwarded ports.

Today, I'll be buying a new Windows 7 CD, so I could try the repairing of my OS as some of you have recommended, but until then , are there any other cheaper suggestions?have you tried lowering your routers firewall? Quote from: luck of the irish on December 01, 2011, 03:47:45 AM

Solve : Help and advice re: wireless vs dsl?

Answer»

I am getting as new HP Pavillion shortly.  It comes with a "wireless card".  I'm upgrading from dial-up, and don't know how to choose a PROVIDER or how the wireless card will work.  Do I sign up for service with a provider?  OR is it automatic when I hook up the unit?  Is dsl better?  Can someone please educate this dinosaur?

Thanks!Start with your local phone company and see what they offer. Expect DSL to be about 3 megabits per second for about $20 a month.

Then check with you cable TV company. If they offer 10 megabits per second for $50 per month, go for it.

Otherwise, you need to contact one of the mobile cell phone companies in you area. If you have goo cell phone reception, they can bundle internet into you cell phone plan.

Or, ask you neighbors what they use. If nan vary a lot even in the same city.First, anything is better than dial up.

Look in your yellow pages for internet services.  There may be several DSL providers, all of which go through the same phone WIRE to get to your home but some may be either faster or cheaper than others.  Why that's possible is a long boring story.  Most cities have just one cable provider, but a few cities have two.  You just need to check AROUND and see what's available and what you are willing to pay.

Any high speed service will probably cost more than you are paying for dial up, but trust me it's worth it.  Once you have used any high speed service of any kind, using dial up is painful.

You need to be very careful about using mobile phone service for internet access, it all DEPENDS on their data PLANS.  I've heard some real horror stories about outrageous bills when the user didn't check on the fine print.

And your wireless card was probably meant to be used with a local wireless router, not a wireless ISP.

Solve : Wireless Repeater at home.?

Answer»

My DSL service was so bad that I finally cancelled it. And by telephone line. In this part of town the phone company ant not going to repair or replace copper wires.

So, my next door neighbor has good Internet with the cable company. Comcast.c. I get a weak signal at about -74dbm with a simple dongle. On the Internet it checks out at about 20 Mbps. So I can watch Netflix with good quality.

What I want is to set up a wireless repeater at the read of my house. The signal is much better there.  The alternative would be to just run an Ethernet cable to the back o0f the house. But I was hoping a wireless repeater would be  a way to avoid running a fat CAT-5 through the house.

Here is what I have.
Used Linksys WRT54G V8 . It has been updated to DD-WRT V 24. It works as a router and AP, but to date I have not got it to work as a Wireless repeater.
In fact, I can not get it to work as a client.
So, I am at a standstill.
Any ideas?
I have used a Wireless Bridge before to do this... however... does your neighbor know that your using his internet?

I had to do this setup once when my wife forgot to pay the cable bill and internet was shut off and since we have Vonage it also killed the phone to call in and pay over phone to get the connection back. It was also middle of winter during a SNOW storm and so I wasnt about to drive 13 miles to the nearest free wifi hot spot which was mc donalds, and so I walked around my home with my netbook looking to see if I could detect an open wireless connection. I found a very very weak connection from my bedroom which was stronger when netbook was pressed up against the window. I was able to get 1 bar and so i attempted to use the internet to pay the bill but was given a notice that if I paid over the internet it could take as long as 2 business days to process the payment, but that if I wanted it sooner I could call it in. So I configured a wireless bridge that I had to connect to this random person in neighborhoods wifi and duct taped the bridge to the window temporarily. I then connected the cat5 cable to my router which is tied into everything else and my phone was then able to work. I then was able to place phone call and pay by check over the phone and get them to light my broadband back up. I then disconnected this temporary wireless bridge connection and made sure that my wife paid the comcast bills on time.  True Confessions...!

But yes, I do have  permission.
What tools do you user? I mean software. I have not yet found how to scan using the waiter I have. So I can not see if I got the connection.
Tools I use are a built in directional app that my Toshiba Netbook NB205 has. Somehow the antenna seems directional and so it shows a series of rings around a central location which is you with the computer. There are circles on the rings and these represent wireless networks detected and the closer these are to you, the stronger the signal. The furthest away on the series of 5 rings the weaker the signal. It also gives you statistical info on the wireless connection detected and shows a locked or unlocked symbol and states whether its B or G etc. And depending on the location of the circle you know to walk in one direction to get closer to the source of the signal vs trying to guess which direction to get a stronger connection. So somehow the antenna is directional to display with this software where to walk with computer to get a better signal connection.

Testing for connection should be as simple as a persistent ping to google such as from a system that should have internet connection open up command shell and enter ping www.google.com -t and if your getting successful pings then your connected. Otherwise if your getting some successful and some loss you know that  its a wireless signal strength issue where its coming and going and not stable.  Or no response you know your not connected.

If the wireless is open without any security this should be pretty easy to set up. If there is security then you will need to enter the info in the config of the access point set to bridge mode etc so it can associate with this other wireless router etc. Thanks I will try again. Also to mention in Bridge configuration the Router or Access point that is running in bridge mode needs to have DHCP turned off. The neighbors DHCP will issue you an address and gateway lease etc. If for some reason it allows you to configure it as a Bridge and allows for local DHCP, then there could be issues if the local DHCP isnt getting a lease from the DHCP from the neighbor.

The Bridge that I used was specifically a Bridge only intended to be a bridge. It was one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Cisco-Linksys-WET54G-Wireless-G-Ethernet-Bridge/dp/B00008WMBT/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1420386581&sr=8-9&keywords=wireless+bridge+linksysThanks. Here is an update. I got the DD-WRT device to work as a client and it does that very well. I do not want a full bridge, I only want to get the Internet connection. The part I had missed was how to scan for the MAC address of the main wireless  router and get my router to be a client  to that AP.  After that, it works. But the security is turned off. Later, I will try to improve security.

The main l router, my neighbor, has a guest feature that allows some use with low security. It requires a password, but is not very secure. Still, better than  no security.

DHCP. Yeah, it is a real PITA. Hard to get it right. I found a configuration where I did not need to disable it in one place, but in another. You have top pay attention to which sub net your use.

I am learning. One day at a time.
Good to hear its working.... and depending on where you live the lesser security of the guest feature might not be that much of a PROBLEM such as if you LIVED in a rural area where wardrivers are less likely to be driving around for a signal to connect to etc and they would instead favor an area with more houses per mile traveled to try against as well as not stand out like a sore thumb if parked on side of road with a laptop etc.

But even though i am in a not very populated area, i still like to have maximum security to the point that i drilled holes and ran Cat5e for most of the network stuff I have in my new home on 100 meg switch connected to router to broadband modem and the wireless is only used on the rare occasion for a laptop but mostly for my wife and daughters kindle fires.

I have a project this spring to either run fiber to the barn from my home or for the fact that the barn gets its power from the main breaker in my home, add an outlet in the basement on one of the legs and use one of those network bridges that communicates over the hot leg to use the wiring as a means to get like a 20 meg or better connection between my office I built in the loft of the barn and the home. I could go with a wireless point to point, but I dont see a need to emit extra RF radiation especially since it would have to be located in my daughters room window closest to the barn that is 75 feet away. They say RF isnt that bad from wireless devices, but I chose to keep exposure to it to a minimum just in case in addition to the better security of wire or fiber.  As to your concern about RF levels. Wireless signals in the 2.5 GHz band are typically below - 20 dbm at a distance of two meters.  That is a very low level of RF energy.  A wireless device is dangerous if you place it within g a few centimeters of your eyeball.

EMF = Electromagnetic Field. The Sun's magnetic field doesn't affect us much since the Solar Wind coming from the sun is deflected by the Earth's Magnetic Field. Right. I meant radiation.
Back to topic.
What woks for me is a client wireless router connected to a AP. Trying to get the one router to do double duty as client and AP just does not wok. Some detail is lacking in the documentation. It seems the tern 'Wireless Repeater' is used loosely. So I will just use two devices. The extra device is not needed anywhere else in my home, so I will just use it for my convince. But it makes me wonder about the devices they now sell as 'Wi-Fi' boosters. Do they really work?More update...
Some grammar errors are from dictation.
Here's some ADDITIONAL information. I have been studying information about three different brands of routers. They are:
DD-WRT
Linksys,
Netfear,
and
Tenda.
The most extensive documentation is, of course, from DD – WRT. The commercial router companies also claim to have repeaters  and wireless repeaters in their product line, including many of the most popular models presently on the market.
However, I have found a lot of inconsistency or at least the difficulty in the documentation. Here's the basic concept, you have to grasp. The new wireless routers consist of some three or four principal components. Some include a modem, and additionally must have a wireless transceiver and an Ethernet switch . All in the same package. Of course, a external power supply is  required and in some cases, makes a significant difference in the performance of the router. Wrong power supply, poor performance.
Now here comes the confusion. The Ethernet section can allow all devices to communicate with each other. If that is what you want to do. The wireless transceiver will interface to the Ethernet switch and allow wireless devices to also connect to the Internet and the local network. Most of the time, you will not have any trouble using the Ethernet, the rules are rather straightforward and don't require a lot of preparation on the part of the user.
But setting up the wireless is not quite as transparent. The wireless requires some type of security, unless you're willing to take the risk. The security standards have shifted somewhat in recent times, and there is some question as to whether not all routers can comply with all forms of security out there. This is the area where you will probably have the most trouble. So much so that in some documents, it says you have to forget about security and run your wireless completely open. If you want the most versatile and flexible operation. That is very unfortunate.
Both  Ethernet and wireless have rules about the subnet. The subnet is, in simple terms, a range of addresses of all devices that should communicate with each other through your router. Nevertheless, there are setups where you can have different devices on different subnets and somehow get this thing to work. I have never seen a clear, concise explanation of how that works. But I have got up to work both ways. To a limited extent.
When you have all devices in the same subnet, you should ensure that only one router is doing the DHCP. That statement is generally true. But presently I have one of the routers doing DHCP here in my office and ignoring the main router. My computers in my office can see each other, but cannot see the computers next-door. But all my computers can get to the Internet. And also my android tablet and my iPhone can see the Internet through another AP that I set up locally.
Even though what I am using is successful for my purpose, it still is very oddball, and not like what is claimed in some documents I have seen. It seems as some routers just cannot get along with each other. While others do. I have tried so many, variations  of DHCP, subnet and local IP address, but I've lost track of how many different things  I've tried.

Now here's the real kicker. There are some devices being sold out there that claim they will work as a wireless repeater and are very easy to set up. Well, I have not found any evidence that that is true. Reading through the documentation indicates that you cannot simply make a wireless repeater using only the security, MAC address and SS ID. Digging into the documentation you have to get into your main router, the one that is connected to the Internet, and make an allowance for another device to be a remote repeater. So that means you have to get permission from your neighbor to go into his router and set up a list of remote clients that are allowed to function as repeaters. In the advertising I have seen, that point is never HIGHLIGHTED explicitly. It is not enough to have the password, Mac and SS ID. You actually have to go into the control panel of the main router and allow it to accept a remote repeater by specifying the MAC address of any remote repeaters you want to have in the system.
So far I have not got to that point. But I do have a working system by using  my router with DD–WRT as a client only and making connection to the guest account of the main router. The guest account does not have any security enabled, but only a simple password login.
If anybody knows more about this, please chime in and tell me what's going on here. So far all I have found is you have to use minimum-security and for ideal performance you have to fiddle with the main router as well as your local repeater that you're trying to set up. You have to have permission from the main router to set up her repeater.
Please tell me if that is wrong.
Because I'm a poor typist. I had to do this by dictation instead of trying to type it in. If you are using Windows 7 or Windows 8, you already have, speech recognition software on your computer. Give it a try. Sure beats typing.
End of dictation.

End of message.Dear diary,
Today I again tried the Tenda AP in repeater mode. Does not work. But I got this warning:
Quote
AP MAC Address
Note: SSID and channel will automatically set to match your selected AP. Note that the AP you select MUST also support WDS. WEP is recommended for the connection for better compatibility with your selected AP.
But it did not connect to the other device, which was also a Tenda.Nor did it change the SSID of the repeater. Back to reading more documentation.

Solve : Win XP Home SP3 & NAS - Long Delay in Network Info Mapping drive?

Answer»

One of the office computers died and I swapped it out with another system that was prebuilt ready to drop into place and configure. EVERYTHING went well until attempting to Map Z: to a local D-Link NAS. When going through the process through windows XP Home SP3 to map Z: to the NAS path to the data that is to be mapped as Z: the NAS was not listed. The NAS shows a domain of APWU and the systems in the office are on the WORKGROUP domain. Even though they are on 2 different domains, generally you go there to connect to the D-Link NAS and you can navigate through to select the FOLDER on the volume that Z: is to be mapped to and your all done.

BUT... yesterday when going there to map Z: on this system, APWU wouldnt show up even when SELECTING to perform a refresh of the network info. Here is what I tried without it fixing the issue at the time:

- Rebooted the computer = No Change, still missing from Network
- IPCONFIG/FLUSHDNS = No Change, still missing from Network ( I didnt think this was going to help anyways because its not really DNS related but its worth a try at just a few seconds of keystrokes and enter key. )

Went on a 5 or 10 minute coffee break to think over why its missing when the NAS is still functional to all other systems on the network.

Next attempt to get it to work:

- Rebooted the router = No Change, still missing from Network
- Rebooted the NAS after making sure that no one was on it first = No Change, still missing from Network

Walked away to deal with another issue. Came back and tried again... NOW ITS THERE!!!  in the list to map to Z:

Ok, well not sure why it took forever and a day to be discovered, but glad its working.

Later that afternoon another user on the small network realized that the Tax software that she is running QuickBooks Pro 2015 is not installing to her older Windows XP Home SP3 dual-core computer. Come to find out Intuit decided to drop Windows XP OS SUPPORT and their software will not install to anything older than Vista. Its a Sunday and I am calling around to see if I could get a copy of Windows 7 Home or Pro to install to her Dual-Core system to get her back up and running with the W2 project that she has. No such luck. No stores sell Windows 7 anymore and only offer 8. Due to the fact that this accounting woman has never touched 8 before and has only experience with XP and 7 according to phone call with her, I come up with a plan to take one of the Windows 7 workstations that we already have here and repurpose it for her. Then place another good spare Windows XP system in place of the Windows 7 system that I pulled out. All looks promising until I yet again face the same situation with the Z: map to the NAS on yet another computer in the same day.

While working on getting this system to try to get the Z: map working and also migrating her data from her old system to this other Windows 7 system I decided to just walk away from the Z: map issue to see if it would fix itself again like the other system did. Sure enough I came back to it 4 hours later and at some point Windows XP Home SP3 discovered it. I then was able to map Z:

Question I have is... does anyone know why its taking forever and a day to discover the NAS and is there a refresh or forced discovery method that might work so that if say I needed to have access to Z: on a workstation right away I might be able to make it work right away without trying to explain to the end user to take a 1 to 4 hour break and at some point it will fix itself permanently for this system?    From an IT standpoint an issue like this could be embarrassing if I was put on the spot to fix the workstation right away because someone needs to use it and I have to say that its not mapping right now, but at some point it will allow to be mapped. Its not good to show that you dont have 100% control over a situation...LOL

One thing I did try to see if it would work if someone needed access to Z: was to daisy chain a drive mapping with a share from a system that is successfully mapped to Z:, BUT... Windows does not allow you to create a share on Z: of another system to then get to that Z: drive, the NAS through that other system through an \\IPaddress\sharename so that trick wont work if in a pinch to make a work around until the system DECIDES to discover the NAS.

Attached pic shows the APWU that doesnt show up for quite some time.

Solve : my computer is answering the landline phone after a couple of rings??

Answer»

Everytime the phone rings and the computer is on it seems to answer the CALL and you can hear the person speaking through the computer. I'm not sure what i have done to cause this and have no idea how to stop it from happening. Any advice? thanks mikeMike:

Welcome to the forum!

How do you connect to the Internet?  Is it via dial/up and a modem?

If it is a modem, is the modem external to the computer, or does the phone cord plug into a jack that's built in to the computer?

Also, what kind of computer, and is it desktop or laptop?  What operating system do you run?

THIS LINK is to a page which talks about modem commands.  You may wind up giving commands to the modem via this format, but chances are, there is a way to make changes through the Control Panel of Windows, depending on the operating system you're running.

I helped a person in the chat with this exact problem today.

When you have a modem connected to your landline Windows will listen and "answer" incoming CALLS. If you have XP go to START > connect to > show all connections and disable or delete the incoming connections.OK -- that makes sense, but you might explain up front that what you are recommending is specifically for modem connections.  This may help ease the mind of the original poster.in a similar vein, I could simply say to never use the PC.

Also I believe this is also an option in the BIOS; or with the modem driver software. Quote from: BC_Programmer on July 30, 2009, 10:32:58 PM

I think you're talking about the option to start the computer remotley.no, I'm talking about TAD, Telephone answering device, not Wake On LAN.

the BEST solution is to simply unplug the TAD connector, and disable Telephone answering within the modem drivers properties.  a TAD wire should be GOING from the modem to the sound card, or a motherboard header; this is how it is heard. However even with it unplugged the modem will still answer voice calls, unless it is explicitly told not to answer.

Solve : lost internet connectivity after resetting wireless linksys router?

Answer»

Good day everyone,

I have a linksys wireless router connected to an AT&T modem. I have a laptop running VISTA Premium. Few months ago when I got the AT&T UVERSE service, I configured the wireless router and removed the default settings, and life was so good.

I wanted to connect a new computer to my wireless network, but since I forgot my router's ADMIN password, I had to reset it (that is reset the wireless router to the factory defaults). After doing the reset, I can see the router, and I can connect to it, but the connection remains at "local only".

Here's what I tried:
 - changed the SSID to the old value, didn't work
 - removed all existing networks from the list of networks on my VISTA laptop, didn't work
 - running the cmd commands: ipconfig with the "release" and "renew" flags, didn't work
 - disabling the firewall, didn't work
 - connecting directly to the wireless router via a wire, didn't work either (still shows "Local Only")

Any ideas on what the problem might be? It's really frustrating when things were working and then stop all of a sudden. Any help is appreciated.

Thank you,

Jay

You need to reconfigure your router according to your ISP's SPECIFICATIONS.  They can help you with this.I kinda figured that was the problem. I called AT&T UVERSE, and I got some dude in India whose final answer was "sorry I'm still not TRAINED for this!" (this being a question about needing to REGISTER my router's MAC address or clone another registered MAC address on my router)...

Thank you for your reply...

-Jayjust out of curiosity how old is your router. Also is the power led blinking at all if so you need to update the firmware on the router. I just WENT thru his a couple months ago and did everything you did and nothing until I updated the firmware on the router.

Solve : WiFi connection issue?

Answer»

I have hp laptop with windows Vista. It had been working fine with internet connection. But RECENTLY, it has developed very unreliable internet connection. It will disconnect from the internet, with the ROUTER connection still intact for few mins. EVENTUALLY the router connection will become local only also. Diagnostic tools would not resolve this issue. Then, all of sudden, the internet connection would be reestablished. I am having hard time to resolve this issue. I have done the basics like power off the modem, the router etc., but this PROBLEM still persist. Thanks in advance, if you can assist me in this matter.Check to see if there any CONFLICTS in device manager......consider running Malwarebytes and HijackThis in case you picked up some malware. When it happens again you could also try ringing your provider to see if there is a problem at there end. Thanks, I'll try this. Forgot to mention, The WiFi and internet connections on my other laptop is working just fine. Quote from: imnyc on July 29, 2009, 12:54:50 PM

Thanks, I'll try this. Forgot to mention, The WiFi and internet connections on my other laptop is working just fine.

Ok confused now can you connect to the internet or not? If it's local only your only connected to the router not the internet hence just have a check with your provider.

Also when it happens have you tried right clicking on your tray icon and going into diagnose and repair? Sometimes resetting the IP address can make it work. Quote from: Mulreay on July 29, 2009, 12:57:13 PM

No it does not connect to internet when its connected to the router locally. I have tried diagnose and repair tool, but in vain. it does not resolve the issue. Thanks for the input.Check your router next time it happens to work out whether the issue is with your computer or the router. If the lights on your router go out/turn red or whatever then the issue is with your router or your line/ISP and your computer is fine.

If however your computer is disconnected and your router and other computer stays connected obviously it's either the network adapter/drivers/malware issue on your problematic computer.

Solve : Inbuilt Wireless Adaptor problems?

Answer»

Hey guys

I have an EI Systems 1201 Laptop with an inbuilt WIRELESS adaptor (Realtek RTL8187B Wireless 802.11b/g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter)

It worked fine until a few months ago when the logo in the TASK bar CHANGED from the normal computer screens with a globe to two computer screens with an exclamation mark.

After this occurred, the computer would freeze until I either reset the adaptor (Which resulted in a BSOD) or TURN off the laptop.

I have updated the drivers but it seems to make no difference.

I now access the internet via a USB network adaptor.

Any ideas here?Sounds like the wireless adaptor has failed or the drivers have become corrupted.  First step is to try reinstalling the drivers.I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers.Second step is to try a different wireless adapter.

A few things can interfere with wireless connections, incidentally.  DECT cordless phones, baby monitors, audio/video senders, etc. Quote from: manadude2 on July 05, 2009, 03:08:27 PM

I now access the internet via a USB network adaptor.

It has worked fine using this adaptor and since I reinstalled the adaptor, the only trouble I had was actually connecting to my router, but it's sorted now.

I do have a wireless phone, but even when not in use it CRASHED. I only have wireless internet and a wireless phone.Glad you got it sorted.  Thanks for reporting back.

Solve : 2 ghost ethernet hardwares?

Answer»

bad result: onboard NV LAN and Onboard NV LAN BOOT ROM stopped the wireless connection totally..resp. enabled and disabled, so had to put in the defaults again...LAN CABLE was disabled... Had to use the windows repair option to get the wireless working again. Normally it started automatically which it doesnt do anymore  It won't start automatically because you've essentially wiped out all the records of what wireless records your computer has connected to before.

Type in your SSID and password manually and there should be a check box that says something like "Remember these settings" or "Connect automatically" or something to that degree...yup it did, but problem still exists..might swap my D-Link for a more expensive one with 3 antennas!!?

Like these?:

http://www.datakjeden.no/stovner/PartDetail.aspx?q=p:1030266;c:36180

http://www.datakjeden.no/stovner/PartDetail.aspx?q=p:548522;c:36180

have the one with 1 antenna...
it seems that there are issues with D-Link and XP concerning incompatability with something called 802.x (either n, g or l). There is a HOTFIX for it on MS but of course that one doesnt work...any ideas? I'm using a D-Link router and a D-Link wired as well as wireless connections, and have yet to have problems. But at the same time my desktop doesn't have built-in networking...

However I am also using the more expensive XTreme-N hardware for both NIC and router...

This doesn't sound like an incompatibility between anything to me, but rather a stubborn on-board ethernet CONTROLLER.

.....and getting RID of it by doing what???

Solve : Can connect to my router but not the internet?

Answer»

Hi all

Packard Bell Easynote running Vista Home Basic  IE 7

I am trying to connect this Laptop to the internet.  Via cable and Wiresless (Separately of course) all indications are that I am connected to the router but not the internet.  I have a PC connected by cable to the internet through the router and also have another laptop connected wirelessly with no problems.

When I open Internet Explorer it states "internet explorer cannot display this webpage"

I have reset IE done every IP config switch you can think of and still no luck.  Did a virus scan using AVG 8.5 no infections listed.  Did a full Packard Bell recovery to start from scratch and still cannot connect to the internet either by cable or wireless.  Phoned BT TECHNICAL support and he asked me to carry out netstat -an.  I did this and there were over 40 connections listed.  He said that I have malware.  But I have done a system scan but nothing found.  Can anyone help.  I have also done a full recovery so I hoped I would have wiped all data including spyware etc from the drive except for the factory stuff of course.
Please help

[attachment deleted by admin]Have you tried other websites in your browser just to make sure that your homepage isn't being hijacked, and also it's actually trying to connect to a legitimate WEB page?

From a command window can you ping websites? Ping www.google.com
Try nslookup www.google.com to retrieve the IP address of their site - and then 'Ping x.x.x.x' to make sure your DNS settings are ok
(if this fails try netsh winsock reset catalog , choose Y and then reboot)

Check your hosts file (Windows > System32 > Drivers > etc > hosts). You should really only have one or two entries in here with the main one being 'localhost 127.0.0.1', if you have lots of entries then I would also suspect malware. You can manually delete these files - research what they are first though.Hi PCWizard

Thanks for your input.

I think I have pinged everything on the planet with no luck.

I carried out the  "netsh winsock reset catalog" and that made the connection from the router to the internet so that's a step forward.  Tried pinging www.google.com and got the message "Ping request could not find host www.google.com"  Tried 64.233.183.99 and "request timed out"  Lost all my packets!

Looked at the host file and (I am not an expert!) but not many entries, 2, as you suggested. (Attached)

So I appear to be connected to the internet but not able to use it.  IE 7 still states  "Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage"

30 mins later!!  I appear now to be able to ping 216.35.123.87 which is IGN.com.  I can not use www.ign.com because it will not WORK.  Can not ping anyone else!

Any further ideas

Thanks

[attachment deleted by admin]What does "ipconfig /all" reveal?  SOUNDS like a DNS problem to me.Hi Rob

Thanks for the interest.

It is indeed a DNS problem.  Last night late on I could again only connect to my router but not the internet, again!!  Magically this morning I connected to the internet with no problem.  My latest efforts have seen me manually configuring "Use the following DNS Server address."  in TCP/IPv4 and everything works as it is supposed to.  So I have finally got to the point where the problem lies with "obtain a DNS server address automatically"  Both with cable and wireless connection.

As I am now connected to the internet I am frantically downloading all Vista Updates to see if that cures the issue.  I am not confident that this will solve the problem because I have done a full system recovery on the laptop thinking that if I started from scratch then every thing would be OK.  It was not the case, even tho I did a full recovery the original problem still occured.

So my request now moves on to why isn't the "obtain a DNS server address automatically"  configuration working?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Technowarrior

[attachment deleted by admin]Thanks to the guys that have helped.

I am going to move this question to another post now because it is a different problem.

I have performed a full recovery on this laptop.  Manually configured the primary and secondary DNS.  which gives me internet access.  If I change to "obtain a DNS server address automatically" the problem re occurs.

I have updated vista to service pack one and BEYOND.  I have also changed from IE7 to IE8.

Same problem.

Thanks again.

Please no more posts for this problem.

TechnowarriorThe question is: where would you be picking up the DNS & IP address from?  Are you using a router or a modem?  In either case it would appear that the DHCP request is failing somehow.  Personally, I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about it - put in the IP addresses of your ISP's DNS servers, if that fixes your problem.

Glad you're happy enough to move on.

Solve : computer internet stopped working for unknown reason?

Answer»

my INTERNET has been working fine until a couple nights ago when my DWA-130 wireless usb adapter still connects to the routerjust fine.
Any time that i try to go to a website internet explorer 8 will try to load it and then it will start to load "res://ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm..."

I have TRIED to change the network settings through the 'network setup wizard' and have set it to every possible radio-button. It did not work on any setting.have you tried checking your DNS adresses?
To start with, it is not presently recommended to use IE8.  I suggest TRYING again with another browser (such as Firefox).

Secondly, please bring up a command propmt, enter "ipconfig /all" and copy and paste the results here.A few hours before it stopped I connected my brothers laptop to my computer. It created and new item in the 'network CONNECTIONS' CONTROL panel. It is called Brandon-Todd connection or something like that.

Now I have a connection named 'internet connection' that appears when connected to a wireless network.

my os is winXP SP3. It currently has all updates from microsoft update. Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on July 06, 2009, 05:50:09 AM

Solve : Trouble with ipconfig /renew?

Answer»

I've been trying to resolve a problem with my internet connection. After a power outage I have almost no internet. My isp says it's my computer and not their dsl modem. I can ping any site and it RETURNS okay but I can't open any web sites and when I can it takes forever. I can open my isp site www.pldi.net and hp.com but so far that's the only two that I've found that will open. After the page comes up they never finish loading. Other sites will open but takes literally an hour or so to do so. Any how back to my question--- I was told to try ipconfig release and renew and the release says it worked but when I renew it times out and says it's unable to contact DHCP server.  PLEASE HELP!!
I have a HP M8100n pc running vista home premium

Totally frustrated
TimTim:  my advice will not be the greatest, but maybe it's a starting point.

I pinged Google, and got ping statistics for 74.125.79.99

Go to your browser, and put in the IP address instead of google.com.  I'm curious to see if you get to google (or yahoo, etc.) via the IP address.

I'm guessing you've unplugged everything / powered down / powered up everything since the power hit.

Are you working through a router?  If so, run directly from the DSL modem to the computer, so no one can blame the router.  See what sort of results you get.

I've tried ip addresses and yes I've powered down and rebooted. I've done a system RESTORE ran virus, spyware, malware scans and nothing worked. No router, just DSL modem. Are you connected directly to the DSL modem?  You might check the filters on the phone jacks, if you haven't, already.

The modem could be damaged, I suppose.I'd vote for bad  modem too. When the isp guy came out to check the dsl modem he hooked his lap top up and it worked fine according to him.(I wasn't there) I have limited connection. I can go to some sites but they never finish loading or it will say done but errors on page. I can't connect to this site at all. I've tried checking network connections but I really don't understand it very well. My ip and dnl are set to auto but when I look at the net work there is a unidentified network with limited CONNECTIVITY. The broadband connection says GOOD. Could something have been changed there when the power went out? What browser, version do you use? Did you try another browser? Quote

My ip and dnl are set to auto but when I look at the net work there is a unidentified network with limited connectivity

OK, it's frustrating, but we'll continue...sorry -- at work now, jammed -- hang in there.  Oh, that's a clue, by the way.

Thanks, BrianI'm using IE7 and firefox. IE usually times out but will pull up pldi.net and hp.com but never FINISHES loading page. The same with yahoo. Firefox will pull up the google home page and I can do a search and the search page pulls up okay but I can't go to any of the sites. It seems like firefox works a little better. I'm going to try to uninstall and reinstall my ISP software after I get rid of the unidentified network and set up everything fresh??? Any thoughts?Another option - messed up ethernet card. I'd invest 15 bucks in a new one.Shame on me for not thinking of that when it was the fix for a computer in the house not too long ago!  Yes, you needn't spend much on a card to find out if that's the problem.

Solve : Cannot connect to internet (wireless, LAN or wireless card)?

Answer»

A few days ago I was connect to the internet with my broadband card and suddenly recevied a message that I was no longer connected to the internet. I was in a hotel so I connected the the LAN and received the same problem. I am only connecting locally and not to the internet.  I have reset the computer which has not fixed the problem and I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program that runs the broadband card. I have windows vista as the operating system, but a true newbie to computer issues, PLEASE HELP!!
On the NETWORK icon in the system tray, it's down by the clock.  Right mouse click on the network icon, then on the context menu select DIAGNOSE and Repair.

It's as good a starting point as anywhere.

By the way, did you RESTART the modem and router, just in case one of those stopped responding?tried that, since it cannot connect to the net the solutions it tells me are to plug in a LAN cable or to reset the IP or restart the router. Since my internet is being run from a card none of those options are feasible.

The only reason I have internet right now is that I am leeching wireless from a neighbor on an older laptop
Have you tried resetting the router and modem?

Unplug both for about a minute.
Plug in the modem, wait for all the lights to come on.
Plug in the router.  Then start the computer.

If that isn't it let us know.no modem or router to SPEAK of, its a broadband cardIs it an air card, what does it use for an access point.idk, its a usb thingy that I have through sprintSo does it send a radio wave to another device that is on SITE?

If it doesn't I will recommend that you contact Sprint.

i have no idea, but i am having the same problem when I try to connect to my neighbors wireless, the icon in the corner with two computers has this triangle sign on it and it keeps saying it has limited connectivity. this was the same thing when I plugged the LAN into it 4 days ago at the hotel in VA. so obviously it is with my computer..Not necessarily, there could be an issue with the USB thingy that you have.  Have you contacted Sprint?

Solve : Slow internet for only one computer??

Answer»

Hi everyone, I have a very peculiar problem with my Dell laptop. It is hooked up to a 2WIRE router with DSL. There are a couple other computers connected to the same router, and they get ~3mbps download speed on Speakeasy Speed Test. My laptop however gets only 750kbps. It just loads webpages so much slower.

I've tried everything I could think of, I cleared all my cache, TEMPORARY files, etc and registry with CCleaner. My computer is in seemingly great shape except that it EXPERIENCES MUCH slower internet than the other computers, even when the other computers are turned off. Can anyone please help me? I'm totally lost!Maybe you want to start by posting a hijack this log .... get hijack this program from the following link ... http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html

Run it and post log it generates. A malware specialist can come along and SEE if your laptop is healthy and not sick .... good to know if it's alright isn't it? Maybe some malware hijacked your laptop and is causing internet to be slow? If not, at least we'll have eliminated one possible factor out of many  Just a note: speed tests will be thrown out by any other computers or software using the same internet connection - peer to peer software in particular will CHEW up as much bnadwidth as you let it and falsely downgrade your speed test results.

Now the same problem was in my SERVER system and am not getting how to resolve this..... ( i can't change this into DHCP).

No, through Terminal Services (RDC)...  what you said was correct it must be server ip .. there itself am bit confuse one day i moniterd throught out the day. It was working fine ( when i ping to any other server it showing the correct ip ) when was no client interation. Problem started when they start interacting....I don't fully understand what you're saying about the ping issue incidentally.  Are you saying that for example you sent a ping to 192.168.77.1 and got a response from 196.3.8.2 (for example) on its behalf?  If so, can you provide some more specific DETAILS, and show the output of a traceroute to an external SITE ("tracert www.google.com" should do)?

Hi

i have an E-system 3115 laptop and have managed to connect to the INTERNET USING an ethernet cable to my Scientific ATLANTA modem, but what i want to do is connect the ethernet cable to my Belkin Wireless G+ MIMO router and go online wirelessly.

I'm having problems doing this as it only seems to work when the cable is plugged into the laptop.

Thank you if you can help me.

Does your laptop search for a wireless signal?

Is the "wireless" portion of the router turned on and sending a signal?Yes, other devices can pick up wi-fi from the signal as well.OK...basic stuff...just wanted to establish that we KNOW the router is working.

Does the laptop go through the routine where it's searching for a network to which it can connect?

Solve : NO PAGES LOAD!?

My laptop is saying that it is connected to the internet, but yet no web pages will load in any browsers. It gives me an error message saying the standard "Cannot connect to server or webpage not found." I was just using my laptop the night before this happened. Can someone help me? I would appreciate it!Bring up a command prompt and enter the command "tracert www.google.com".  Cut and paste the results here.

(I wouldn't be surprised if restarting your COMPUTER and your broadband router, if you have one, resolves this by the WAY.)"Unable to resolve target system www.google.com"

I've tried restarting everything and it doesn't work. It has been like this for several days. Does the laptop connect to a wireless router?  If so, have you tried using a cable instead?  Your problem is to do with DNS, but let's go a BIT further with INVESTIGATIONS before we come up with solutions.

Solve : Can't connect to network printer?

Answer»

There are four computers in the house.  Three run Vista, and the other one runs XP Professional.  The one that runs XP is physically connected to the printer and the router.  One of the Vista computers cannot access the network printers while the other computers can.  I also noticed that this computer can only connect to the other Vista computers across the network, but it cannot connect to the XP computer.  The printer driver is installed on the computer CORRECTLY since the computer can print if the printer is directly connected.  Does anyone have any ideas why this one computer is having problems?Could you give us the specifications of the machine that will not connect?Sure.  The computer is a WINDOWS Vista Home Premium.  It is a Toshiba.  This computer had trouble connecting to the network already.  We had to call one of our family friends over to get the computer to connect.  He had to do something with the hard drive I believe.  This bit of information might help shed light on the problem. So does anyone have any ideas?Yup.  To start with: on one of the working computers and on the non-working computer, enter the following in a command prompt: "ipconfig /all".  Copy and paste the results from both computers here.Sorry for the late reply:

C:\Users\Olivia>So does anyone have any suggestions about what is wrong and how to fix the problem? Will the machine that won't print see the other computers?

Have you tried re-installing the printer drivers?

Are the permissions set so that the one computer can see it?When you said this:

Quote from: smlh89450 on July 01, 2009, 01:35:21 PM

I also noticed that this computer can only connect to the other Vista computers across the network, but it cannot connect to the XP computer.

what di you mean by "connect" - are you talking about browsing the file shares?  As Quantos says, how are the permissions set on those file & printer shares? Quote from: smlh89450 on July 20, 2009, 08:05:01 AM
So does anyone have any suggestions about what is wrong and how to fix the problem?
Step one: which computers talk to their peers at the lowest level.  From what you have posted, I suspect each will work.

OPEN a command prompt window; the same window that you entered IPCONFIG. Enter
PING 192.168.1.100    and
PING 192.168.1.108  in each machine.

Do same for addresses of all other computers.  Each computer should 'PING' itself and all other three computers IF all computers are talking properly to each other at the lowest levels.

BTW, do same (if necessary) to verify communication only from each computer to router by entering
PING 192.168.1.1

Hey guys, after a week and a half of just leaving my internet ALONE and not changing any SETTINGS, it has regained full speed again.

It happened suddenly, I was TRYING to load up Facebook and it was taking an AGE, but then all of a sudden EVERYTHING popped up fully loaded. So I went on BBC iPlayer which I couldn't ACCESS before, and it now works fine. I also speed tested and it showed normal.

Thanks for your help.

Solve : Unable to connect to internet using "obtain a DNS server address automatically"?

Answer»

Hi all

Packard Bell easynote Laptop
Vista Home BASIC (Fully updated)
IE 8

My problem is I cannot configure the laptop to "obtain a DNS server address automatically" in TCP/IPv4 and connect to the internet.  I can use "Use the following DNS Server address." manually configure the primary and Secondary DNS and everything works fine.

I have performed a full recovery on this laptop.  Manually configured the primary and secondary DNS.  which gives me internet access.  If I then change back to "obtain a DNS server address automatically" the problem re occurs.

I have updated vista to service pack one and beyond.  I have also changed from IE7 to IE8.

Same problem!

Any help advice direction would be a great help.

Thanks

[attachment deleted by admin]The problem lies in how DHCP is working (or not working in this case).  Router?  Modem?  How do you connect to the internet?Hi

I am connecting to the internet through a router.  SPEEDTOUCH 585i.

I have RETRIEVED the primary and secondary DNS from the router.

My apologies but I neglected to mention that I have a 3 PC's attached to the router through the ports on the back.  I also have another laptop which connects wirelessly, all are configured to "obtain a DNS server address automatically" with no problems at all.  They are all using different variations of XP Home and pro.

Thanks

TechnowarriorApparently MS changed its implementation of the DHCP client in Vista and broke it.  Needless to say, they blame router manufacturers.  Anyway, try the troubleshooting tips in their KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233Hi Rob

Found your suggestion interesting and I was even excited thinking "I haven't tried this it must be the solution".  SADLY having followed the instructions in the KB article, I noted that the value of DHCPConnForceBroadcastFlag was already set to 1.  No change required.

Darn it!

I am getting to the point(but not yet) where I manually configure the "Use the following DNS Server address." and leave it at that.

That wouldn't be right though.  I will stick at it.

More suggestions welcome.

Regards

TechnowarriorDoubtless, the KB article from Microsoft pointing out another way in which routers are to blame is still being typed up.

Seriously, don't sweat it.  Add the static DNS entries and forget about it.Hi All

Well I slaved a NETGEAR router in and guess what.  I can obtain a DNS automatically now!  I cant identify what the issue is but everything seems to be working normally.  I wonder if there was a minor conflict between Vista and my Speedtouch 585i?  XP certainly doesn't have a problem.

Oh well having researched this for quite some time now I am going to have to call it a day.

Thanks to everyone for there input.  I am going to close this one down now.

Solve : need help for rj45 splitter?

Answer»

hi friends.... i have a RJ45 splitter... can any 1 tell me how it works?
or is there some1 who have experience with this splitter?

--------------
when i attatched two wires into this splitter, both NIC disconnected....
dont know what is this? is there need to set IPs of both computers?
---
plz help

[ATTACHMENT deleted by admin]There's really no such thing as an RJ-45 splitter.  Is this a repeater?Quantos, I've seen these used to act as a coupler/decoupler over a run of cat 5 - e.g data over two pairs, digital PBX over the other two.  Gura, you'd need two of these; one at each END of the run of cabling.

E.g.:

Code: [Select]PC1 -----                                      ------|----------|
         \                                    /      |          |
          >----------------------------------<       |  Router  |
         /                                    \      |          |
PC2 -----                                      ------|----------|

This assumes that the cable is in good condition and all four pairs are intact.hummm sort of looks like this....

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062676

How many leads are in that thing?  If it's four, it's RJ11, and it's for voice, or "standard" phone lines.  OK, I looked it up, and it exists, so I learned something (again!).

So, the deal is, you can use the splitters as a way to "MULTIPLEX" two sets of signals over a single run of ethernet cable?

The splitter does not act as a hub!  That's why both NIC's dropped out when you tried to use it. Quote from: Aegis on July 21, 2009, 01:02:18 PM

So, the deal is, you can use the splitters as a way to "multiplex" two sets of signals over a single run of ethernet cable?

Replace the word "multiplex" with "run" and you're spot on.

NB:  This will FAIL with gigabit ethernet since that spec uses all pairs.Dain bramage!
There's no need to multiplex PACKETS / frames.  Old telecomm habits die hard.Gura, what exactly are you trying to accomplish?Looks like Gura's gorn...

Solve : Quick question on the correct definition for domain?

Answer»

Still after all these years, some definitions that I read seem a little incorrect in some ways.
Before I tell what is a bit confusing to me,
Here is like what the Windows XP book we have says about like domains and alias too-
E-mail servers can do their jobs because every mailbox has a unique e-mail address. This address has 2 parts, the alias and the domain, separated by an .
For example, the email address [email protected] represents a user named someone who has an email account on the microsoft.com domain(in other words, they work at microsoft). Business e-mail aliasas generally consist of a person's first and last name or initials. The domain name that follows is also where you'll find that businese's Web site, simply replace the alias and the with www and a period, and you have the url.

The things that seem incorrect about some of those things is like my email address is [email protected] but I don't work at bellsouth. Also, it says how business aliasas have the person's first and last name or initials. Which I'm not a business either.
Plus like at the site for my brother-in-law's job is www.astresurfacing.com which that would make it seem like what was said is that his email address would be [email protected]
which that isn't his email address it's a bellsouth email like mine is removedbellsouth.net

Quote

Just because your brother-in-law works at AST Resurfacing does not mean his email address has to be [email protected]  And, he could have both an email address at astresurfacing.com and an email address with bellsouth.net.

Do you think a person can have only one email address?  Do you not know that anyone with Internet access can create a hotmail email account, or a Yahoo email accountl, or a Gmail account, or any two of them or all three of them?  You could do this and still have your bellsouth.net.  Your brother-in-law could have hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, an email account at work, i.e. astresurfacing.com, and an account with bellsouth.net if bellsouth.net is his ISP at home.  That would give him 5 email accounts, and that's no problem if that's what he wants. Basically there are no rules for email addresses Amy. You could have 1 or a 100 email addresses at any domain you want, as long as the domain is either free or those who own it are willing to offer you an alias on their domain.

In other words, you have a bellsouth.net email address because BellSouth were willing to offer you one, most LIKELY because you're a customer.

And speaking of email addresses you should really remove those in your first post, because spambots tend to collect email addresses from forums and adding them to their spam lists.Sorry, What do you mean about the spambot thing? What about sites that have us login using our email address as our usernames? So, then AmyR7 is not listed like it is on here. My email address is listed for my username.
Our ISP basically has to give us an email address since the username and password is what we have to use in the first place to setup the internet. You type in the username and password.

Yes, I understand we can have email addresses at hotmail and all too. Which with all the HACKING, I'm glad there are so many free places to get email from. I've had so many of my accounts hacked and then no way to get them back either because of all the information they change, so then the stuff you have to provide them to prove the account is yours doesn't match anymore because they changed that information.
Also, maybe someone can tell me what do you do in situations where you need to give a site a new email address. Like on classmates I have a gold membership. Like when my email GETS hacked, I have to give them a different one, but then they send the information to your old email account too, so then the hackers get my credit card information too and I had my credit card charged again too when I changed my email with them.
The other thing that still seems a bit confusing is no, my brother-in-law's email for his job is his bellsouth email account. So many people work at home, so what if they work from home?
Quote from: AmyR7 on July 11, 2009, 05:00:30 PM

See How do spammers get my Email address?.  That's why email addresses should not be posted in forums.

Any site that requires using your email address should be using a secure logon page.  A secure page is where the URL starts with https://, not http://.

Yes, but you should change that password right after your ISP issued username and password, and periodically change it thereafter.  And, use a "strong" password.  See Strong passwords: How to create and use them

Again, if you're having a problem with someone getting your email password and accessing your email, that's a clear sign you need to improve your password management practices.  Use strong passwords, change them periodically, and tell no one.  That should prevent the problem.

Perhaps the company has a policy of using employees personal email accounts to communicate via email.  Setting up accounts for all employees in the format of [email protected] takes a a bit work.  Perhaps they just don't do it.  Also, we don't know for sure whether their web hosting service offers adequate email services for the company to have [email protected] email accounts for everyone.  Quote from: AmyR7 on July 11, 2009, 05:00:30 PM

Like soybean said, it sounds like you need to tighten up your security so you don't get hacked. Cure the problem instead of the symptoms.
Have you had the guys over at Computer viruses and spyware give your computer a check for malware? Malware is often used to lift password and credit card information.

It's up to the company really. If his job involves email communication it is pretty common for a company to provide a work email address. But it is not a set in stone rule. Having a work email or not really depends on job position and the type of company you're employed by.

It doesn't matter where you work from. Take me for example. I work as a programmer for a living. I can basically work from anywhere as long as I got my laptop, my mobile and an internet CONNECTION. Wherever I go I can check my work email as easy as you would check Hotmail or any other web based email service. The webhosting company is setup like places like Geocities, Angelfire, etc.. where you login with your username and password.
The reason I know it is because I was helping them with their site before I had to quit due to a number of issues, my health getting worse and problems with my computer not working right either anymore and kept crashing everytime I logged into the site to work on it.
I do have strong passwords, but still keep having the problems. Long and confusing ones and I have them all written down too. Yes, probably is the spyware that got the passwords. My brother-in-law is trying to help with the problems since he knows alot on computers and so much long physical things to do and all that I can't do for long and stuff on my own.
Yes, but to work from a mobile type of connection, or other things like you said, you need a laptop. We have a Desktop, and don't have a mobile or cellphones.

'windows cannot load the localy stored profile. possible causes of this error include indufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. if this problem persists contact your local administrator'

and then another one shows up saying this

'windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you into a temporary profile.'

when the time was up it loaded me onto a defult DESKTOP. I checked and my programs are all there and WORK but none of my files are here... any ideas?Your files will still be there - don't panic!

Which version of Windows is this?  In XP, user's files are normally stored under C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME].  There will be a few hoops to jump through to set PERMISSIONS etc.  Patience will be needed, I'm AFRAID!  We can help though.

Solve : Earthlink issues?

Answer»

I'm having trouble (yet again) connecting my laptop to my home network. I have a gateway laptop running Vista Home Premium, and it usually connects using Earthlink. At this point, it shows all the various networks I can connect to, but when I try any of them, it says it can't connect for an unknown reason. My wireless adapter will every-so-often pick up a signal for a few seconds but then die on me again. I have already tried the FOLLOWING...

1. Resetting the modem/router
2. Restarting my laptop
3. Plugging my wireless adapter into a different USB port

The other computers in my network are all connecting fine (hence my being able to post this), but it should be noted that the problem computer is the only laptop and the only gateway machine in the network.
Any suggestions? On a command prompt, type ipconfig /all and kindly post it here.
You should do it on the Vista laptop and on a PC on your network that is working fine..UPDATE: ok now I'm a little freaked out. I unplugged my wireless adapter and tried it on another computer. Now the other computer is having the same issues, and on top of that, while I was gone my laptop connected on its own... without a wireless adapter.

... and could you be a little more specific on how to do the config THING? I'm kinda BEGINNER. Quote from: jerryheavyarms on July 21, 2009, 09:55:53 AM

On XP it would be, Start > Run. Type cmd. Then type ipconfig /all
On Vista, I think, click Start. On the space above it, type cmd. Then type ipconfig /allWell I'm not sure why this command thing isn't working, but if you're looking for general info about my laptop...

Gateway
Model: MD7801U
Processor: Intel (R) Core (TM)2 Duo CPU T6400 2Ghz 2Ghz
RAM: 4GB
64-Bit OS (Vista Home Premium)

Also, it turns out there's built in wireless CONNECTION in my laptop (of course I had no idea). However, if I try to use it, it gives me the same problem as when I try using the adapter. With regards to the ipconfig command, you could try reading this for a start:

This explains why you said you're laptop connected on its ownI can't help regarding your network problem, but to open command prompt:
Press Windows key + R. When the Run dialog opens, type cmd.exe and press enter. Then type ipconfig /all.Well we reset the router again and now it's working. I still don't know why it wasn't, but I guess it doesn't matter as long as it does. Thanks for the help.

Solve : Unknown user pc on my wireless connection??

Answer»

So I go into my router config page, look under IP passthrough and see three computers using my router connection. One has my laptop's name, one has my PC's name, but I see a THIRD computer called "User Configured PC" I don't recognise at all. This user is always here when I look at IP passthrough, yet the two I own only appear when they're switched on. Should I be worried about "User Configured PC" or this just some setting desplayed by default?

I do use WPA2 with a long password, and ZA for firewall.Depending on your router this could actually be your router being displayed as a device on the network.

Can you check for MAC address filtering - don't actually switch it on, but there should be somewhere that lists currently connected DEVICES by their MAC address.

Double check the details against the sticker on the router's base.Do you have any other devices connecting through your (wireless?) router...such as a mobile phone, maybe? Quote

I have something like that under LAN stats in my config page but it only shows two devices on my LAN, my laptop and main PC, no "user configured PC" or anything else.

Nope NOTHING cept my Laptop and main PC. Yeah my main PC is hooked up to the router via ethernet cos it can't pick up the wireless, and my laptop just connects by the wireless signal.

Solve : Connection Drop Out Help...?

Answer»

They try a new modem?

You're going to have to escalate this (nicely) through levels of management, to basically ask if you're paying what you PAY every month for service that drops out every ten minutes....Yeah we EVEN considered it to be a problem with the power, so we bought a ups and it still didn't help.
Had the cable guy over for an hour today, putting up new cables outside, doing all sorts of things, and nothing works
Yeah when the problem first began we got a new modem, I guess i'll get a 2nd new one soon
It seems to be an unfixable problem.
I guess pressure on the ISP and then if nothing can be done, hopefully a new ISP will be the answer.
And btw thanks for always replying  You're WELCOME.  I hope you get it sorted out.Ok next thing I just tried..which I have no IDEA if it will be helpful or not, but you guys can let me know if you have any idea...

I went to Computer,
then System PROPERTIES,
then Device manager,
clicked on Network Adapters,
The name of my Network Adapter came up and then I right clicked it and clicked Update Driver Software.
It updated to Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.

Maybe this has something to do with it? I have no idea but hey at this point anything is worth a try!
Any thoughts?Never hurts to try.  If this is an on-board / built-in network interface, you might try installing an inexpensive network card into an open PCI expansion slot if you are so inclined, and try it that way, too.

Solve : Internet keeps knocking off?

... or least the browser does. My router lights are all still workinga and I still gte a signal, but neither Firefox or Explorer will connect to any sites. I keep getting this message whenever Firefox stops: jar:file:///C:/Program Files/Mozilla Firefox/chrome/en-GB.jar!/locale/browser-region/region.propertieswww.***.com

The last part of that with the *** will be whatever site I'm trying to reach. Anyone know what it means? I've tried re-installing Firefox, ran checkdisk too, reset modem, and left the router off for a while. This also happens Sporadically, I'll be using it fine then it'll stop for an indefinite amount of time before it returns.

OS is VISTA. I use Avira as my virus detector and Zonealarm for my firewall. This happens on my PC which is hooked up by Ethernet and my laptop which runs on the same router but uses its wireless signal.

1. Click Start>Run (Start>"Start search" in Vista).

2. Type in (or copy and paste):

This way, we'll find out, if it's about your connection in general, or it's Firefox issue. It hasn't happened since. I'll try it when it does.OK.Happened again today. Did that thing and got a text document with this:
"Ping request could not find host google.com. Please check the name and try again."OK. That means, it's not your browser, and you're really losing the connection.

Try some basic steps...

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh INT ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.

If that doesn't work...
Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF):

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file. Likely not!

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here, one at a time, do the below:

Reinstall BITS
Reinstall Windows Firewall
Repair Permissions
Reset networking

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

Restart computer.

Solve : Need Help Desperately!?

Answer»

I have a laptop that I had not used since December because I got a new one.  The new one is in the shop so I want to use my other laptop.  Anyhow it was letting me get online and check my emails, but it would not load any websites at all.  I took it to the computer shop and they cleaned it up.  They said the hard drive is fine, but it had a lot of spyware and viruses on it.  They fixed all those problems.  At the shop the laptop was like lightening going to all the websites and stuff.  When I got it home it was the same and would not load any websites at all.  Now it is not even letting me get online at all.  My other computer (desktop) works just fine and goes to any website I need.

I have Windows XP and my internet is through Time Warner Cable.  I have a wireless router.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
ToniWhat browser do you use? Did you try different browser?

1. Click Start>Run (Start>"Start search" in Vista).

2. Type in (or copy and paste):

          cmd /c ping google.com>%TEMP%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

      and press Enter.

3. Notepad will open.

4. Copy all text in Notepad ([Ctrl-A], then [Ctrl-C]), and then post it (paste = [Ctrl-V]) in your next reply.

I tried this and it didn't work.

When I was looking at the connections it says my ISP isn't connected.  Does this need to be and if so, how do I do it?

Thank you! What do you mean, it didn't work?

Is the wireless switch on?Can you bring up the command prompt and enter "ipconfig /all" and copy and paste the results here?  It just sounds like your old laptop has not negotiated its network connection properly, which we can help you fix. Here is what it says when I do the ipconfig/all.  I couldn't copy and paste it so I wrote it down.

Thank you for any help you can give me.
ToniYour wireless network card has not seen your router.  The quickest way out of this would be to connect using a network cable.

If you look in your system tray (that's the area near the clock, bottom right) and hover with your MOUSE pointer over each of the icons, do any of them say anything about networking?  If you right-click on these icons, in the menus that pop up, do any say "View Available Wireless Networks"?  If so, try clicking on that option.  REPORT back.It says I am connected to my network. It does say view networks.  When I click on it then it says I am connected to my network.

ToniOk now this is strange.  I wasn't able to connect at all to the internet but it kept telling me I was connected.

I decided to try to connect using my dad's network.  He lives next door to me.  Got me right online and the computer flies to any website I want it to.  Ok so I decided to switch it back to my own network.  It got me online, but again is taking like 8-10 minutes to load one webpage.  I just don't understand it...................Although I'm open to input from the other guys here, I'm afraid it looks like a compatibility issue between your network card and your router.  You could try CONNECTING using a cable (if that's convenient), upgrading to the manufacturer's latest drivers for your network card (check their web site) or upgrading the firmware in your router (geeks only!).How is your security set up on the wireless router, what HAPPENS if the old laptop(one your trying) is connected with an RJ-45?

Solve : Internet drops on one PC but not others?

Answer» ONE of my laptops drops off internet when on for 5 minutes. All other PC working normally. This happens both when using wireless and directly CONNECTED to cable. When direct connected to cable, the orange network light is on but no green light (activity). In both cases the network shows as being connected with strong signal but not response.  Any ideas? After removing all other PC's from network, problem still persists.Have you tried connecting using the cable with the wireless switched off?  Because it sounds like when the network cable is connected, it's still TRYING to use your wireless connection.

Some specs would HELP - make and model of laptop, operating system, network cards etc.try scanning your pc LATELY for maleware an what not?

Solve : Using my Modem in bridge mode????

Answer»

My system:  HP dv6-1030us running vista home premium, a Belkin WIRELESS N f5d8236-4 v3, an embarq 660 modem.  I have a desktop connected to my router via wired connection, a desktop on wireless, a brother printer on wireless and my laptop on wireless.

I recently just tried to start USING bit torrent to get some old football games.  I downloaded the program and tried to use it, all APPEARED to be working fine except the download speed was very slow.  After about 3 minutes my Embarq 660 DSL modem would automatically shutdown and reboot.  Once it rebooted the connection would reestablish and run for another COUPLE minutes and then reboot again.  The download speed NEVER got to over 16 kb/s.

I read a couple of other threads that said the solution might be to use my modem in bridge mode.  I even read on how to get it to bridge mode but I need to know what else I might need to do with my router and laptop to be sure it connects to the internet still?  I also need to if using the modem in bridge mode will be the fix for this?

Thanks for any help and input.THe issue sounds to me like less of a software on the machine issue and more of a modem issue.

I'd try talking to your ISP and see if perhaps you need a modem upgrade. Quote from: cgerard on July 19, 2009, 11:58:06 AM

Solve : comcast and Wifi?

Does it look like this?

or

Here's the support page for the v8 router:
http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2590

Does your son's computer "see" a wireless network at all?the first one OK - cool -- it's really the same -- they just get cutesy and put it on a stand...

Now, we have to figure out if it's actually broadcasting a wireless signal.

These are instructions from the site on how to access the Administrator settings of the wireless portion of the router:

http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/111

Don't worry about security, yet...let's just get the box working, and we can go from there.  We...like I'm doing anything besides STATING, "Do this...do that..."ok answer me this is a G router better than an N router?

Theoretically, N is better than G..it's the newest wireless standard, and it's supposed to be faster and have longer range.  Articles on the Internet SUGGEST that the N standard isn't fully defined, and though Netgear, Linksys, and Belkin are claiming fabulous results with the new N standard, your mileage may vary.ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH

My D-link was an N router and comcast gave me a G?

*plots to kill hubby!!*http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=670

This is my D-link router which I'm wondering is it better than the Comcast one?On the whole, I'd say, yes, it's better -- besides saving what I'm guessing is at LEAST three or four bucks a month which Comcast is cheerfully charging for the router.

I know of no reason the D-Link should not have worked.  I really think someone saw a chance to "pad" your bill by $36 to $48 dollars a year -- perhaps more!

Now, let me go back and check that other router...very nearly sure it is a G router.

Yes, it is a wireless G rated router.

BTW I found my D-link. My hubby put it in the closet

As soon as we figure out which one is better I'm going to fix it
