Answer»

Weather is BAD here it is TAKING for ever to connect.  On answer to your question is I wont know until I get an adaptor.  I guess I will just have to listen to her *censored* and get it.  So I will LET you know when it comes in and do a signal search and see what happens.  In the mean time I am going to call verizon and see if the set up access points..........later........and thanks for the help Quantos............two-dogs     Let me know either WAY.  There are always steps, it's just FIGURING out which are the most effective.

Solve : internet for my shop?

Answer»

we have a wrt 54g wireless router now and a couple of LAPTOPS everything works fine, just the way it is supose to, however i would like to use my laptop in my shop....
shop is located 525' from router
internet provider is wildblue (SATELLITE)
the wrt54 g router gets the signal out to the door of the shop, facing the router, but thats it, its unusable, very week signal, we BOUGHT a linksys wrt320N and a N usb network adapter, but it isnt any better than the old router and old network adapter, so we returned it.
ive played with the idea of cat5e but the distance is too far for that so ive read, so now what can i do?

i need some ideas please, or links or something... im new to all this so please give it to me in the most simple terms.. thanksI would recommend CAT 5 with a REPEATER.  Your internet provider should be able to hook you up.

Normally CAT 5 can do about 300' without a repeater.Maybe a high gain antenna?  But I don't think a domestic router would be ideal for that range. The problem with that is wireless is so damned insecure.  I would go WIRED with a repeater, at least that way you know it's secure.

Solve : Network Time Protocol (NTP)?

Answer»

Hey,

I'm working on a project where I NEED synchronized timestamps between my three computers.  The problem is, none of these computers will have access to Internet, so I can't just download some software and have them all sync the time from there.  I need to create a local network where one computer is the boss of the others in terms of time.

I read about how to do this when using Windows OS as both the server and the clients, as well as how to make the network when only using Linux computers.  The problem with all that is that I'm using a Windows XP and then two Linux ubuntu computers.  I can't use either of the suggested methods.

I've also found a few forum questions from other sites with a similar question to mine, but without a definitive answer.  If possible, I'd like to make the Windows computer the stratum 1 level meaning that it will broadcast the time to the two other Linux computers.

I've also read numerous warnings against this because the internal clock used in Windows is so inaccurate.  My response to that is I've found a way around it, so I don't care in this case.  Also, I'll say that I've only just started working with Linux, so if anyone answers, please explain step-by-step.

I've already downloaded the prescribed versions of NTP software for both Windows and Linux onto their respective computers.  The software appears to be working (the clock is updated from a chosen high stratum source), but as I said, I will not have access to Internet during the experiment.  The computers are connected directly and are able to 'see' each other when I used ping.

How do I get a local network of computers to recognize an internal hierarchy for the purpose of synchronizing time stamps?Hello!
You could do this:
http://www.watchingthenet.com/enable-auto-time-synchronization-in-ubuntu-and-kubuntu.html

Just uncheck any time servers from the internet and add your Windows XP stationThanks

This would have actually been helpful if I hadn't figured it out 10 minutes before I checked back .  That's how it always works I guess, but it was good to have the confirmation.

Also the version of NTP on my Windows wasn't good with letting me change settings...eventually I found this one: NetTime Server and Client Advanced (if anyone's interested).

http://www.sharewareconnection.com/download-net-time-server-client-from-sharecon.html

It seems pretty good so far, but unfortunately I just lost the ping connection between my computers , so I won't be able to say until I fix whatever's wrong now...Having tried LOTS of ntp clients, I've finally plumped with Dimension 4.  Free, comprehensive, robust.

Glad you got your config sorted.  Feel free to start a separate thread about your "ping connection" issue. Thanks - I might try it out if it turns out NetTime won't work for me, but it has been so far - intermittently ANYWAY.  I got the ping connection back; the physical connection to my Ethernet switch got messed up without me realizing it.  Good to have an easy fix for once lol.

I was able to synchronize the Linux client from my Windows server, but sometimes it just stops working and gives me an error or timeout message.  I'm not sure what's wrong... I WROTE down everything I did and recorded a visual copy of all the settings when it was working, but when I switched user accounts and came back, the sync system was no longer functioning.  I followed my instructions exactly and emulated all the settings from before, but it still wouldn't recover.  Sometimes it just starts working randomly even after I haven't done anything (play with settings, but put them back).

This was the case this morning, but then I connected to Internet (which it wasn't before) and the sync stopped working.  I was trying to synchronize the server's time under the "Internet Time" tab under "Adjust Date and Time" which is found with a right click on the clock.  I had it set to auto-sync, which worked before (even with the NetTime program running), but now.  The long line of green light successful sync indicators is now replaced with a whole list of red error messages.  What's annoying is my server's clock didn't even sync it's own time for all that mess.  It gave me an error message that the computer couldn't connect to the server.  (The Internet's on though because I'm on here)

I'm trying to figure out by process of elimination what I can do without disturbing the connection, but it's always different things?  When it shuts off, I've always done something (adjusting settings but putting them back, OPENING a program, switching the user account and coming back, etc.).  Those shouldn't influence the connection though, should they?

I'm probably on my own with this problem because it has such unspecific signs for diagnosis, but if anyone does have some troubleshooting IDEAS, I'd definitely be open to them!!!If you can get hold of an ethernet cable tester, it would be worth while checking the cables are all okay.

Solve : Help with a um175vw?

Answer»

Ok here goes I have a um175vw usb modem that I got from verizon and it has a shot adaptor for the antenna that is on the side of it.  I need to know how I can hook up my hawking 14db directional antenna, to the short antenna adaptor that comes with the CARD.  I called the manufacture of that adaptor and they told me that it has an FME male adaptor, my problem is that I can't find the female for it.  Does anybody know where I can get the female end.  One more thing is there a hook up that I could use with that antenna that I bought that would not have to go in to the usb plug in card (um175vw), any help would be appreciated.........thanks.......two-dogs            Quote from: two-dogs on July 01, 2009, 05:50:16 AM

my problem is that I can't find the female for it.

If I understand correctly you are looking for the female FME connection on the um175?  Hi Quantos my friend you just got me going with my internet sharing and it is working great, thanks again on that.  Ok now my problem is I have a hawkings directional antenna and I am having problems finding a certain fitting.  I called the manufacture of the little antenna cable, and they told me that the end I need is a FME female.  I have gone to radio shack and best buy thinking this would be a quick fix, not even.  It says in the directions on the antenna that you hook one end to the router and then continue the setup, sounds simple enough,, but my router is a 310n Linksys and it has an internal antenna.  So I have to have that short cable with the FME male end.  Now I need to find the mat4 for that fitting......can you point me in the right direction or give ma a work around.........thanks.....two-dogs       I'll tell you what I do when I need a specialty cable.  I contact a local Audio/Visual rental place.  I'm not sure where you live, but in Edmonton AB I usually contact a company called FM.  They provide rental gear for bands and large shows.  They know the sweet spots for getting cables made.  If you would like, PM me your location, or just reply in the thread.  I'll source out a manufacturer for you.  The prices aren't usually too bad, you pay for the connectors, the cable, and about 10 minutes time to have the connectors put on.

Back to the football game.  Quantos I found the cable and have ordered it.  It has a fme female and a male n on the other.  Thanks for the help........two-dogs   Sorry that it took me so long to get back, I was working out of town and there was no internet.  I wound up leaving my laptop at home.  Let me know how that works out for you.Well Quantos I have a tight connection now but still the signal is not as strong as I want.  I have on the roof a hawkings antenna but I am not sure if that is the best way to go.  I am about 6 miles from the tower and my signal goes back and forth from national access to broadband.  My downloads speeds are not that great .40 in speedtest.net.  and it times out on the forth hop when I do a tracert.  I am also hooked up  to a netgear mbr624gu and with that my signal is just a little BIT better.  You have any suggestions for me and something that might work better, oh and I am getting a signal trough trees about 2 miles away.  I am sure in the fall when the leaves fall and I can see the tower it will get better.  Hope things went well for you when you were out of town................later..........two-dogs    Quote from: two-dogs on July 20, 2009, 03:35:02 PM

Have you tried getting your supplier to set up an access point for you?  Quite often they can troubleshoot and replace an antenna with a better solution.Quantos do you mean by supplier "verizon" if so there ain't no way they can't or wont  do something like that all they will do is get you on LINE and try and trouble shot.  And sorry Quantos I don't have a clue how to setup a access point............two-dogsThe access point is up to the supplier, it's not something that you can do on your own.

I NEVER fail to lose patience with a supplier that fails to meet the needs/expectations of the clients. So If I call verizon I should ask them to setup an access point?   If they are capable of that then it should quadruple your throughput, at the least.  It may cost a few dollars to get set up, but find that out in advance.

Solve : Unable to renew ip?

Answer»

I have a second computer that runs windows xp pro sp3 while away and back home I have not been able to connect this computer to the wireless network.

when i try an ipconfig /release and renew i get an error that unable to connect to you DHCP Server

I did look into this and replaced the winsock still the same.  I have removed and readded the wireless driver and software.  I just run a windows repaire on the computer but still getting the same.  I have cleared the wireless router of the ips in use but still getting this error it really is doing my head in and cant think what else to try.  The router works fine with all other computers and I even renamed the router but seems what ever I try I still have this error and really NEED some help

Oh in the connect tcp/ip there is nothing in here it is all set to automatic try to do:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renewthanks for your reply i have just tried this and still getting the same errorTry this then,

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /renewDoes this computer connect successfully if you use a CABLE?I have done the ipconfig the ipconfig /registerdns failed.

When checking with the cable it all worked ok it just seems to be the wireless that has the ISSUE When you're viewing available wireless networks, CLICK on 'Change Advanced Settings'.

In the new window, click on the Wireless Networks tab and click on Properties.

Go to the Authentication tab.

Is the first checkbox checked?Try to unplug/plugin you router just to refresh it..I have changed it from the netgear software to windows and is now working?  But I had removed all the netgear software and reinstalled it?Are you asking us QUESTIONS?it just seems strange I removed the netgear software and put it to windows and worked ok.  Just wondred if there was something that would have caused this to happen or a location it has stored the ip?This is not all that uncommon.  Surprisingly, Windows' Wireless Zero Configuration usually does a better job than most manufacturer's own utilities.

Solve : reg: RDP connection problem?

Answer»
am FACING a problem with Remote Desktop Connection (RDP) the message am getting was "unable to connect RDP. Contact your administrator to resolve this issue ...." this am getting when access from other network system (previously this problem was with my network clients.. if they got like this then they just restart system and it works fine) ..  the REAL thing was am able to connect from server mechain but not from client ....

  My network (N1) :

   Server : Windows 2003 R2 SP2
                 RDP v6.0
                 HP proLiant 110 G2

  My Guest  network(N2) :

   client: Windows XP

please through your view where i need to correct to solve this problem....
Have you looked in the event logs for any error messages at the time of the failed connections?yes i checked..... noting was there releated to this problem.. Have you installed the RDP client update (via Windows updates) for this client? Is remote desktop enabled on the client machine? Are you on the list that are allowed to use remote desktop on that client?Typical checklist for RDP issues:

1) Does the router/firewall have port 3389 open and POINTING to the server's internal IP address?
2) Is Remote Desktop enabled on the server?
3) Does the user account you're using have rights to log on interactively?
4) Is there a software firewall on either end blocking traffic through port 3389?

Solve : problems seeing other computers?

Answer»

Hey all, at a friends HOUSE, 2 comps running vista, 1 with xp.  All are sharing internet CONNECTION, but NONE can see the OTHERS.  I dont know vista very well, so im not sure what to do.  Is there a way to start over, im thinking maybe the domain name is different but not sure.
What should i TRY first to get at least the 2 vista comps to see each other? My first thought is to be sure they are all on the same workgroup.do u know where in vista i see the name of the workgroup?I believe it's similar to xp in that area.

Right click on my computer, properties.  Go to "computer name" tab at the top. Also make sure that their IP addresses are on the same subnetalso a good point.

Solve : DSl is great!?

Answer»

After ten years of dial up I have gotten DSL. It is great. I just down loaded Vista SP2 in about 2 hours. On dial up it was going to take two days. The wife and I can both be on the net and still get phone calls. We got it through Embarq over  the phone line. No cable out here. It works great. I just had to tell some one how GOOD it is. You all have a nice day.LOL.  YES, I know you're in online HEAVEN now. Many of us remember the days of dialup and also experienced the joy of that vast improvement in Internet connection speed when we switched to cable or DSL.  And, being able to be on the net and still get phone calls, how sweet it is compared to the restrictiveness of dialup.

I also have Embarq.  They offer different levels of speed, at different prices. What speed are you paying for?

Quote from: I Shooter on July 13, 2009, 09:22:36 PM

Sounds LIKE you're in a rural area.  The phone companies seem to be slowly opening up more outlying areas to DSL subscribers. They tell me it is 1.5 MBS. What ever it is it's fast. Yes I live out in the country. I get my phone, Dish TV and the net for around $130.00 a month. I was paying about $70.00 a month just for the phone. So I didn't think it was to bad a deal.Just be lucky you can even get broadband in a rural area.

Many rural areas in the Midwest region of the USA can't even get DSL or cable!  I used to live in such an area, and my best Internet connection option was a cellular MODEM from Sprint.

Solve : changing isp for the first time?

Answer»

Don't laugh, but l have an old dial-up modem to the ISP Wanadoo, aka Orange, in France. My line has now been upgraded so l can now get broadband and l have changed supplier to a company called Free.fr (the new "box" should be arriving any day now). Getting a bit excited 'cos download speeds should be really good!!
The only drawback is it'll all be in blimmin' French, which l can just about cope with, but..... should l remove all programs to do with Orange before installing the new ISP software or leave well alone until l am up and running with the new supplier?  (l'll probably have to remove all to do with Orange from the startup file before installing the new isp).
Does this make sense, and is there anything else l should be aware of?
ThanksPatience Willy.  When your new service is activated, then you can uninstall the old software.  Thanks Rob, good advice as it so happened!
Got the new box (which came with an ethernet cable, whereas my old one was usb), plugged it in and zilch! Finally discovered that my via ethernet adapter was disabled, enabled it, and l am now on. Never set up a network device myself, so fingers crossed, getting there slowly.
Right, final problem. Somebody set up my old ISP system so that all l had on the desktop was the IE icon, renamed as Internet. Clicked on it and it took me straight in to that ISP.
If l click on it now, it still comes up with my old ISP address and obviously says cannot connect.
How can l click on this icon so that it takes me to my new ISP provider?

Strike that last one out, apart from the thanking Rob bit.
Sussed it out and it's now working a treat.
Regards Whoops, spoke too soon, and although l am somehow connected to my new ISP, possibly by sheer luck on my behalf, l think something is not right!
QUITE a few questions arise, but not being fully conversant with networking thought l'd tackle each one at a time if that's ok with you guys, so -
I've now got my IE desktop icon that when selected, logs me into my new ISP.
However, the blue header bar, whislt SHOWING me where l am at, is always FOLLOWED by the word "wanadoo" which was my old ISP. How do l change this so that it shows my new ISP?
Thanks
 try this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/176497
Thanks BC, that worked fine. (never would have figured it out myself).
Second problem is on the IE8 ad-ons, the "envelope " for reading mail tries to fire up my old ISP, and Outlook Express starts up with the old ISP icon on its toolbar.
So how to l get the read mail icon to look at my new ISP?
Thanks for being patient.Oh no, not IE8.

Have you got the settings for a new email account with your new ISP?  Have you set it up in Outlook Express?  Don't worry about what the icons look like - as long as OE is configured correctly (and the old email settings are removed, if necessary), you'll be fine.Thank you Rob,
Yep, IE8 l'm afraid. Slipped through on one of those automatic updates, but have to admit l haven't had too many problems with it as late.
Anyway, l have my new email account so WENT into OE, accounts, and saw there was only one there. Created a new account, and in it's properties put my new ISP's details, and set it as the default. Went back to IE8 and selected the read mail icon. Still tries to open OE using my old ISP.
Checked accounts again in OE and it has auto switched the default account back to the old one (GRRR). Back into OE and l deleted the old account leaving just my new one.
Same routine, selected read mail icon in IE, and same thing blimmin' happens. Went back to OE and it has reinserted the deleted account and named it as the default?
Totally confused now as to how and why it's doing this.

Solve : Cannot not access my router.?

Answer» OK I was trying to access my router because I have to change my NAT settings in order to play Xbox Live (because my router is upstairs and my Xbox is downstairs connected through my laptop). I have a Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router and I am using a Windows XP desktop, and Mozilla 3.5. Every time I try enterting my router's ip address 192.168.1.1. on Mozilla it just give a a black white page and the status bars says done, when I try in IE it's says "Internet Explorer cannot display this page". So I tried to to run ipconfig to SEE what was wrong and every time I try to run ipconfig, it flashes on the screen for a second and then disappears. I need some help please!

Also FYI, my router is not DIRECTLY connected to my modem, my modem is connected to a Packet 8 VOIP box and that is connected to my router, but I was still able to access my router through 192.168.1.1 before in that same setup, until now.Try going into command prompt then type ipconfig. If you type ipconfig in the run box it will quickly disappear like you said. I have the same router myself. Are you able to access the internet at all otherwise?yeah i'm able to access the internet and my connection is great and i went to command prompt and was able to access ipconfig and it stated that my router ip is 192.168.1.1 but it still gives me a blank page every time I try to access my router.Try Safe Mode with Networkingcheck your firewall cause that might be your problemTried disabling my Kaspersky firewall and tried booting in Safe Mode with Networking and still have the same problem. Quote

Remove?yeah, I tried that and connected my modem directly to my router, I still had the same problem and surprisingly when I did that I couldn't even get any internet.I'd say, there is something wrong with the router.maybe my firmware is corrupted?Maybe...if your power light is blinking on your router you need to update the firmware on it. The same exact thing happened to me back in may and I updated the firmware it started working and knock on wood it's been working just FINE since.try both

Solve : how to remove my computer from a workgroup??????

Answer»

hey guys!
i trying to remove my COMPUTER from a workgroup? does ANYONE knows how? a little help please!

ecx... FIRST  you goto mycomputer-->right click-->select computer name-->click change.i've TRIED that one already.. what i want is to TOTALLY remove the work group that i've madeYou don't.

A workgroup is just a group of computers.  It's not stored on any one PC.  If you change the name of your workgroup on your PC, you are automatically removed from that particular workgroup.

There's no "removing the workgroup" altogether because there's no place that it's actually stored.

Now if you were on a domain, then there would be one or more computers that control the domain, you can add and remove PCs from the domain, and you can remove the domain altogether.Killerb is correct

if there is more than one computer on your network with that same workgroup name it will continue to show till they have also changed there workgroup name

Solve : router issue???

Answer»

Hello all.

I am having trouble keeping an internet connection on my home office computer.

The router is connected to ANOTHER computer 2 rooms away.  Up until now the connection was fine, however now it is continually searching for a network without any luck.

The router is about 2yrs old(Netgear rangemax wireless router wpn824).  I have tried CHANGING channels, updating the firmware........................anybody have any ideas what else I can try?

THANKS
Do the other two computers work fine? If so, can you try their internet cables?

When did the problem start?

What Windows Version?Yes, it is only the one computer.  It started over the weekend.

I am runnng Windows XPAny recent downloads/installs/hardware changes?
no..................nothing at allIs it wired, or wireless connection
Conect computer in question straight to the modem. Will it work?It is a wireless connection.  The computer in question is not in the same room as the modemI'm afraid, you'll have to carry it to find out more about your problem. Not sure if this helps, but on the computer with the wireless card, I went into the "status" tab and it tells me that there is an invalid IP address.  How do I GET it to recognize my IP address

Jim If these steps below won't work, you'll really need to carry that computer to modem's location...

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK.

In Command Prompt WINDOW, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK.

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.

Solve : setting password on a workgroup?

Answer»

hey guys!
IM new in networking.. i am currently setting up a workgroup in a network and i want to set a password in my new workgroup.. can anyone please HELP me?

ecxzqute..What operating system are you using?

If its 2000/XP/Vista, right click the folder, go to Sharing (or properties, then Sharing), and under Sharing, there may be a "Require Password" field you can fill out.

There is no way to prevent users from accessing a list of network computers, or from viewing the folders at the base of the share... but, you can prevent users from opening the folders, and accessing files.

uhm... i really wana set a password on my new work group.. there is already an existing workgroup in this network. my OS is xp pro.. is there a way to set a password on my workgroup to prevent access from other computers in my network? Its possible to protect the individual folders, from my experience working with workgroups, thats really it.
Its possible to protect the individual folders, from my experience working with workgroups, thats really it.
=========================================================================

nope.,., its possible to protect my workgroup from other user in the network?
It sounds like you're wanting your workgroup to function like a domain.

A workgroup are a poor-man's domain.

Domain = 5-star hotel.
Workgroup = Motel 6 in the ghetto.

The only security options you have on a workgroup are share permissions, NTFS permissions (if using Windows), and the individual user accounts on EVERY SINGLE COMPUTER in the workgroup.

TURN off Simple File Sharing first (My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View tab -> turn off last check box "Use Simple File Sharing").  You CANNOT, I repeat, CANNOT do this with XP Home Edition, Vista Home Basic, or Vista Home Premium! (good thing you have XP Pro)

Let's say you have a workgroup like this:

COMPUTER1
User Accounts: Mr. T, Chuck Norris,

COMPUTER2
User Accounts: 50-Cent, SNOOP Dogg

COMPUTER3
User Accounts: Slayer, White Zombie

COMPUTER4
User Accounts: Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood

Let's say COMPUTER1 has a folder on the C drive called:
C:\I Pity da foo

On that share, the following permissions are set:

Share:
Administrators: Full Control
Everyone: nothing
Users: Read

NTFS:
Administrators: Full Control
Mr. T: Full Control
Chuck Norris: Read
SYSTEM: Full Control

Let's say Kelly Clarkson on COMPUTER4 wants to access that share using \\COMPUTER1\I Pity Da Foo.  She can't get in without Mr. T's User Name and Password (or Chuck Norris' if she just wants to read what's there).

Of course a new ACCOUNT called Kelly Clarkson with the EXACT User Name AND Password can be made on COMPUTER1 to get into the share.  From there, Kelly Clarkson would have to be added to the Administrators group or Mr. T would have to add "Kelly Clarkson -> Full Control" to the Share or NTFS permissions.

See how messy this can get?  Everyone controls their own stuff on a workgroup.

Solve : Reg: ping in LAN?

Answer»

Hello All,

recently i noticed in my LAN network that unable to ping between two local systems... but am able to do with server and local sys... is there  any services i need to start....  can any ONE this plz....

Thanks & RegardsIt depends on your OS and firewall you are using, but the Ping function can be blocked by the firewall - check yours to see if that service has been disabled.

Using Ping in large waves is a type of DOS (Denial of Service) attack on servers - it overloads them with Ping requests and gets traffic jammed. Also if you're running Vista, you may have to run the Command Prompt elevated if UAC is TURNED on.

Start -> All Programs -> ACCESSORIES -> right-click Command Prompt -> left-click "Run as Administrator" -> accept UAC prompt

Solve : static dns entry?

Answer»

Hi.

I'm trying to connect the two computers in my HOUSE to the internet, using Tiscali and a THOMSON router.  One machine has connected fine (otherwise I wouldn't be online), but the other is causing me problems.

I know the machine is capable of connecting, as a few years ago it was connected VIA a wireless plugin to a router.  This has worked for 2 different routers in two different houses.  However, connecting via an ethernet cable doesn't seem to work.  The error message from the Tiscali software asks me to check that I do not have a static dns entry.  I've looked, and I can't find anything relevant on the internet.  Doen't mean it's not there, just that I can't find it.

Any and all help gratefully received.  The PC in question is running windows XP pro, with SP1 (it's not been online for a while, HENCE the lack of updates), 512 mb RAM and a 2.6 GHz processor. If you go into control Panel, and then Network connections>

Right click your LAN connection and choose properties>

SELECT TCP/IP configuration in the selection box and choose advanced/properties (this is by memory-so may be worded differently!)

The new window that pops open will give you details about the IP ADDRESS and DNS entry. Both should be set to obtain automatically in the radio button options.

Solve : Faster upload than download - WHAT?!?

Answer»

I don't think this exactly fits here, but I didn't see any better forum.

See:

Ignore the stuff about bittorrent, I'm only including it because I think it provides proof of what I've been suspecting for a little while now - which is that I'm not actually downloading at what my "download speed" is? Confirm or DENY this? Why I say this: As you can see, speed test says my download is 6600 kb/s and upload is 1700 kb/s. Yet on the second image, my download speeds are only 500-600 kb/s which is not ANYWHERE near what my download speed is apparently at (according to speed test) while my upload speeds are 1500ish kb/s  which is close ENOUGH to what the speed test says my upload speed is for me to accept the difference as just a normal fluctuating discrepancy.

So, what gives? Is the second test from BitTorrent itself?
Do you have BT port(s) forwarded? Quote from: Broni on September 15, 2008, 09:44:03 PM

Is the second test from BitTorrent itself?
Do you have BT port(s) forwarded?

The second test is from here - not from my bt client (utorrent)

I want to say I don't have the PORTS that the test used or the port that utorrent USES, but when I did the utorrent config and clicked the button to test if the port was forwarded, it said it was () - SO I think my router is doing some kind of auto-config? When I hooked up my Xbox 360 (also wireless) I didn't need to forward any ports there either, making me suspect some TYPE of auto-config port forwarding going on even more. What kind of speeds are you getting with BT, when you use it? Quote from: Broni on September 16, 2008, 03:50:34 PM
What kind of speeds are you getting with BT, when you use it?

100-300 kb/s download mostly, yesterday I was getting 300-430 kb/s frequently though.
Upload is a lot more consistent at 150-300 kb/s, yesterday it creeped up to 350 kb/s max a couple of times though.

With scores like 6600 on a speed test shouldn't I be getting a lot more download speed than what I seem to be getting.. ?I'd say, any download faster, than 100kb/s is good.
Believe me, I spent A LOT of time, tweaking my connection, playing with port forwarding, applying half-open connection patches, and yes, I saw on couple of occasion my download speed reaching 700kb/s, but normally, my speed would be somewhere between 100-400kb/s.
It all depends on number of seeders, and seeders to leechers ratio.
Upload speed is more consistent, because it depends MOSTLY on your connection speed, which depends on how busy your ISP servers are. Quote from: Broni on September 17, 2008, 07:17:03 PM

Well, I wasn't concerned about download speeds on torrents specifically - just worried that for some reason/some how I wasn't "getting" the full download speeds that my connection is capable of, but it doesn't matter much I suppose since my internet is fast enough for my normal browsing habits and the only time I could make use of faster speeds is on torrents and there's no real rush with those anyway. Thanks for your help. You're welcome

  please help possible.....
Operating system of terminal server/remote PC?
Operating system of host PC?
Remote Desktop client configured to use local printers?Hello all,

thanks for reply... i resolved printer problem.... need just to do this....

To resolve this problem on a computer that is not RUNNING Windows Server 2003, force all ports (INCLUDING DOT4) on the client computer to be filtered for redirection. To do this, add a DWORD value NAMED FilterQueueType to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Default\AddIns\RDPDR and set its value data to FFFFFFFF.

Follow these steps, and then quit Registry Editor: 1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Default\AddIns\RDPDR
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
4. Type FilterQueueType, and then press ENTER.
5. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
6. Type FFFFFFFF, and then click OK.

Solve : Reappearing Network Drives?

I have set up a PC to connect to a network.

I have mapped two network drives on an ACCOUNT on that PC. Each ONE mapped with reconnect at logon checked.

I disconnect the two said drives and they disappear from the my computer screen.

I LOG off and log back on again an lo and behold, there they are again.

How can I permanently disconnect them? For some reason, on the umpteenth attempt to disconnect these drives, they finally disappeared for good.

I haven't got a clue as to why they REFUSED to permanently disconnect before, though.

Thanks for thinking about it!

Solve : streaming not working on new wireless setup?

Answer»

hello

My roommate just set up a wireless router so I could use my laptop in another part of the house. I have a Compaq Presario 2500, using Windows XP, PROFESSIONAL, Version 2002, SP2. Intel (R) CELERON(R) CPU 2.60GHz, 2.59 GHz 448 MB of RAM. The router is a "Netgear" system (Rangemax Wireless -N Notebook Adapter). If more info about my computer or the router are necessary, please let me know.

Anyway, the problem is that although my roommate assured me that using this system would be as fast as being physically connected, it appears to not be the case. A little slowdown is acceptable, but despite the happy little note on the Netgear box that claims "Ideal for surfing, Internet phone calls, streaming video and music, and online gaming," I cannot watch any vids on YouTube, get any streaming music, and we can just forget about games. They take FOREVER and a day to load, and then they just don't work.

I have never used a wireless system before, so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do to start troubleshooting. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!Although u might have fast wireless network. Check your NIC spec's. See if it is 100mbs or 1 gig. With wireless network try changing channels. Let us know.Hi and thanks for your response!

Where do I find that information (the NIC specs)?

Also, yesterday, I did a few things that helped, at least superficially. I went thru the programs installed and deleted some things. It appears that once I got rid of Ad-Sense, things ran a lot better. I'm assuming there was some kind of conflict with something else running? Anyway, I can now watch YouTube vids (tho very choppy...) and listen to music, but when I try to visit a site like Kongregate.com to play a game, things come to a screeching halt. (Also have probs with Facebook...things slow waaaay down and CPU pops up to 100%)

Have run SuperAntiSpyware scan, and a Hijack This scan, but things haven't changed. If anything, seems worse after I ran the SAS scan...is that possible?

Some programs r more intensive then others. I see in your posting , u have less then 512MB of ram. U will need more Ram. Install has much RAM as the LT can handle. Or at the very least 1 1/2 gig. Ram is very cheap now a days. To check the spec of the NIC u might have to refer to your OWNER manual or go the HP.com select Compaq Presario 2500 and it will show u the spec's for your LT.

Hi Geeks!

My Net Connection was working FINE but suddenly it lost CONNECTIVITY. On going though the "Router Log File", it shown as attached!

What can we make-up from this Log File. Please be descriptive & is it some lacuna at the ISP end or simply my Modem went AWRY!?

[attachment deleted by admin]Have you checked with your ISP about this / when did it start happening?  "FAILED to connect ...PPPOE".  Checked your router settings / tried going direct to the modem without the router?

Alan <><  Hey Ale52!

My Router & Modem are NOT two different entities! Its DSL 502-T, the only one, I use to connect to the Internet!

My ISP is a "State owned Telecom" & is characterized by INEFFICIENCY, red-tapism & buck-passing!.....so...You have got the point?! Yeah, I got it.  If they are that inefficient then that would be one of the first places to check.  Can you hook up another computer to your Internet to rule out the possibility that it's the computer and not the ISP?

Alan <><  Unfortunately Man!

I don have an ADDITIONAL PC & I got to know sometime back that some issues were going on specifically with DSL-502T ?

Where could be the catch? What have you gathered from "Router Log"?

Solve : Wireless Adapter Problems?

Answer»

Hi, I'm having some trouble with my 'Sitecom Wireless USB Adapter 56g Turbo' on my Computer. For some reason, starting a week ago, it can't find any connections. Were before it could usally detect 3 (My Router, Next DOOR's and BTOpenZone). However, I don't think the problem is my router because my other computer I'm on now is connected to by BTHomehub. I don't think the problem is my Adapter is the problem either because I've had it for the good part of a year and it's never done this.

That why I think there  must be something on my computer blocking the connections. However, there's only one thing I know that does that and that's Firewalls. I've turned both of mine off (Windows Firewall and ZoneAlarm) but it still doesn't work. Any idea s on why I can't get connected?

Here's my Computer Specs:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20GHz Processor
1024MB RAM
(If you need to know more, ASK.)If this is a RECENT problem, I would try a SYSTEM RESTORE

Otherwise, you MIGHT want to look at this PROGRAM:

Solve : Doing game-related things messes up my internet.?

Answer»

I have a fast 5MB connection.  Works GREAT most of the time.  I can download anything I want at almost 600kb/s, no probs, everything's lovely.

Except when it comes to games.  Basically, getting a server list in games messes up my connection, but JUST for games.

I'll use CALL of Duty 4 as an example:

If I refresh the list of servers, pick one, then connect: it will connect (sometimes it will stick on one of the steps of connecting, usually "synchronizing"), the map will load, but once I get in it will show Connection INTERRUPTED and it doesn't recover.  In fact it doesn't recover until I restart my computer, and sometimes I have to move the ethernet cable to the other slot.  When I get in game it's actually normal for about 1 second.

Now, if I have a server on my favorites list in Xfire, and I go straight from the desktop to that server via Xfire, everything will be perfectly fine.  Excellent ping, no lag, etc.

It does this a myriad of other games too.  Counter-Strike SOURCE, Team Fortress 2, Crysis, etc.

Crysis is the worst one, since Xfire or no other service supports "one click join."  You have to go in game, log in with your account, then once it does that it will automatically get a server list which of course F's everything up.  The other games have the same behavior as Call of Duty 4: get list, connect, loads (or sometimes doesnt), and then connection interrupted in-game.

Also, once it's messed up, I can't get a full server list, or usually I can't get a full one in the first place.  Like CoD4 will list 20 random servers with pings all over the place, when I know for a fact there are at least 12,000.  Same thing with the Half-Life 2 engine games I mentioned, and for them it even happens when I try to get a server list out-of-game using Steam.

There are a couple games that aren't effected.  Company of Heores for one.  I don't recall F.E.A.R. Combat being effected either.  Even when the connection gets screwed up for the games, it's still perfectly fine for EVERYTHING else.  Surfing, downloading, what ever.  I'm typing and posting this response on a "messed up connection" after trying to play Crysis.

That's about all the information I can think of off the top of my head.

I have a NetGear CG814GCMR wireless modem (but I'm connected through ethernet).  Dynamic IP.

Solve : Server 2008 can see LAN but not Internet?

Answer»

I suspect (hope) I'm missing something obvious and simple.  The computer giving me fits is a Dell Poweredge 1950.  I have no reason to believe that hardware is the problem because it was working fine UNTIL the OS was upgraded from Windows Server 2003 R2 to Windows Server 2008.

After Server 2008 was installed the server was rejoined to the domain.  It can see and access other computers on the local network.  It can not access the Internet.  Windows firewall and IE Enhanced security are disabled.  DNS and the default gateway match everything else on the network.  I TRIED assigning a static IP as well as allowing DHCP to assign an IP.  This server can not ping anything OUTSIDE the LAN.

There is another system on the network already running Server 2008 (my workstation).  It connected to the domain and the Internet with no issues.  I compaired the network settings of the server and my workstation and they appear identical.

I've tried with and without IPv6.

I've disabled and enable the NIC several times.  Attempts to repair the network connection have not succeeded.

No roles have been added to the "bad" server.

I installed the latest DRIVERS for the NIC.

My brain is oozing out of my ears!    Anyone have any idea? Help!

I'm still at a loss. Is 10.1.1.37 your router?10.1.1.37 is the IP of the server sending the ping.

We are able to give the server Internet access by setting its Default Gateway to the IP of our firewall (hardware).  This server (a Dell PowerEdge1950) is the only computer on our network that requires this; not even another system running Server 2008 has the issue.

Why is this thus?  What is the reason for this thusness?  We know not.  When you give it the default gateway of your router (not the firewall, the actual gateway/bridge/router/whatever that is connected to your cable modem/DSL modem/T1 CSUDSU/whatever), it can't get on the net?You are correct, sir.
If this server is assigned the same default gateway as the rest of the network, it can't get to the Internet.
If the IP of the firewall is set as the default gateway, the server can get to the Internet.
Hmmm...

Just for ****s and giggles, do you have an extra NIC to test with?Server has 2 NICs.  Same result with either.

Solve : I'm Upgrading to a D-Link 655/Must I replace my Linksys Speedbooster #2 as well??

Answer»

My Linksys ROUTER has FAILED on me and I want to replace it with a D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit router, the Dir 655.

However, I still have a Linksys Wireless G PCI adapter with Speedbooster #2 card in my Dell Dimension 8400.

Will I need to replace the Linksys card with a D-link adapter card to take full advantage of the D-Link router band width and speed?

Also what has been people's experience of the D-Link Dir 655. All but one of the reviews I've read rate  ???it as the best.

The only thing I wonder about is that I'm just a HOME user with two computers so I wonder if the D-Link Dir 655 is overkill.

Does anyone have any alternative suggestions?

Thanks in advance for all your suggestions.

Much appreciate your help.

I might be wrong on this so don't quote me, wait until somebody else comes along to confirm or deny...

The answer to the quoted question is YES, IF you plan on doing any file sharing between computers. If you do not do any file sharing or at least do not transfer large files often, the speed you'll be missing out on isn't going to be a big deal.

This is because your internet speed, when connecting wirelessly (which you are if you are using a wireless adapter), is dependent on two things: the internet speed allocated from your ISP, and the speed the router transmits at. Average ISP speeds range from 1-10 mb/s (download), while wireless G routers (which your previous linksys appears to be - or at least your wireless adapter is) transmit up to 54 mb/s - so if your ISP only gives you 6mb/s download speed, the other 48mb/s transmission from your router isn't being utilized and therefore serves no purpose to you.

However, transferring files to/from computers on your home network has nothing to do with your ISP speeds, so if you transfer files between computers the max speeds you can get using a wireless G router and wireless G adapters is 54 mb/s.

Wireless N routers (as the DIR-655 is) claim better signals too, however, so if your two computers are spread across a large area you might benefit from the increased range, as more SIGNAL strength equals better transmission rates (a weak signal on a wireless G adapter won't get the full 54 mb/s transmission rates, it might just get 11 mb/s for example).

Edit: Oops, I didn't read the quoted part of your post exactly. You won't need to exchange your linksys adapter for a d-link one, but if you're upgrading to a wireless N router (DIR-655 is), you'll need to get a wireless N adapter. And if you're upgrading your adapter you might as well buy a d-link to match because there are all kinds of conspiracy theories out there claiming routers don't work perfectly across brands (as if the brands purposely sabotage their products to not give full speeds/connectivity etc if they aren't using the same-brand adapter) - this way there are no possibilities of not getting the max potential out of your router because of some nonsense like that. Usually router's will have a suggested adapter to use with the router, so it's best to get that if you're upgrading adapters or experience problems with the new router. Thanks for the advice.

As I read your response, it doesn't look like I need a D-Link 655, since I'm just looking for internet connectiivity rather than communicating between computers. My two computers will be communicating with the internet rather than with each other.

The two computers would need to communicate with the (non-wireless) printer. I suppose that would be done by linking computer 2 with computer 1.

What wireless router would you suggest for hooking up to my cable modem? I see that a lot of people on this forum don't seem to like Linksys.

Thanks again for your advice and response.

I much appreciate it.

Sorry  , can't help you with suggesting a new router, I only know what I said from a recent quest for a new router myself!

Printer: If you currently have no problems with your networked printer, should make sense that you would indeed have no problems with it with another wireless G router/adapter. So yeah, the DIR-655 would definitely be overkill for you.

Sorry I can't help you more, hopefully somebody else will come along and help you!

Solve : D-Link - options??

Answer»

Ok - here's the skinny.

Today upgraded my Direcway 6000 satellite to Hughes Net 7000.  On 6000, was SET up to successfully to get a link across to my BACKUP Lenovo.  With same connections - in other words going thru router from computer to modem - now, no dice.  Shuts down my connectivity.

I do recall WAY back - and hard to remember what I did but - as the modem has the ubiquitous IP of 192.168.0.1 - had changed D-Link to something like 192.168.0.2 - to get things working.

Right now - have direct connection to puter LAN from modem and this works fine but - set up router as before and lose any connection altogether.

So - gurus - what is best way to try and change the router IP such that I can maybe once more get connection supplying both primary puter and secondary - all FUNCTIONING normally.?

Solve : Networking Issue?

Answer»

I am trying to troubleshoot a networking issue.  A new T1 line was established in the business and the main office computers are operating fine with assigned IP, Subnet, Gateway and DNS

The problem is at an off-site department.  The current connection path is via an OTC connection Radio broadcast to the off-site.  The computers show excellent connectivity.  Running an ipconfig/all shows that the computers are finding the network, however the computers will not hit the internet.

I have gone so FAR as to replace the EXISTING linksys but this has not resolved the issue.  I would like some assistance. Was the new T1 terminated into the same equipment as before, or was new termination equipment installed?  Did the demarc, the "phone company" interface change at all?The DMARC was extended and the router is new.  The interface did change.  However, when I ipconfig the computer shows the information entered.  Connection shows excellent strength, but still no internet.OK, now I'll really show off my lack of knowledge!  (I used to test T!'s for "the phone company.")  My own I/T experience is too limited.  The only similar experience I have is on the home level -- in changing a cable modem to new hardware, one MUST work with the cable company so "they" can change settings on their side to recognize the new hardware.  If this isn't done, the new hardware will normally show connectivity, but there will be no Internet "traffic."

I'm thinking it's settings in the new router which need to be corrected.

Sorry, don't mean to be so lame...    Quote from: WolfsSpawn on September 24, 2008, 06:45:01 AM

the router is new.

The computers are finding the Router- but is the Router finding the rest of the network? No --I APPRECIATE all suggestions!  Actually the phone company has changed the settings and the routes are loaded.  But please keep the suggestions up, this has to be something minor I have overlooked.

Solve : Speed difference between PCs over Router?

Answer»

We have three PCs receiving internet over a network using an eithernet/wireless router, one computer downloads about 400 Kb/s slower, wether it is connected wired or wireless.

I have disabled all programs, including anti virus ETC. and have installed updated network, chipset and bios, still have the same results.

The slow PC is the nearest to the router, actually SITTING on the PC, and all PCs are using XP Pro, the slow PC has an Asus P5AD2 -E Premium mother board
with a Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz CPU, 3 MB Ram , the faster PC has an MSI P965 mother board with 2 MB Ram and a 2.8 Ghz Core 2 Duo CPU.

I have tried everything I can think of, any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

BrandyLet's start with telling us what you tried, so we won't repeat your steps.Possibly the computer in question is not optimized to the type of internet connection that you have. Did the computer ever download at the same speed as the others? Any changes to the computer or network? How are you measuring download speed?

Solve : Link laptop to desktop to share WiFi?

Answer»

Is there any way to use my laptop so that I can route the wireless internet from it into my desktop so I can play online games and such? My desktop has no wireless card, and I currently only have my bro's WiFi to rely on. So I'd like to know if its somehow possible to maybe "Bridge" the connection between my laptop and desktop. Maybe through cat5 or a crossover cable?

I'll admit, I know LITTLE about networking, so thanks for any advice.if your laptop can have both Wifi and ethernet enabled at the same time, you should be able to use a cat5 cable between the laptop and desktop- you would then NEED to add a new network bridge between the two network connections (my network places, Show Network connections).

I've gotten it two work with two desktop computers- the bridge was running windows 2000 though.I've tried that, all it did was MAKE my WiFi continually disconnect, and the Ethernet always said limited or no connectivity I would use either a wireless router or ethernet switch or you can get a wireless USB adapter for the desktop. you can use the crossover cable but you can't use wireless and cable at the same time you have to use one or the other.Yeah, I was considering a USB wireless card, and an INTERNAL one. Don't have the money right now, flat broke. My only other wireless card is in the Dell GX60 downstairs until my grandma realizes the importance of a computer and buys her own wireless card. That... Might just take a while though...

Solve : Kicking a Network Printer into Action?

Answer»

I have a printer attached to a network. The printer SAYS that it has no documents COMING to it for printing. The printer queue on the network indicates that the queue is building up.

How do I get the printer to REALISE its mistake and start printing the backlog of documents?

I have tried stopping and STARTING the printer queue via the menus on the printer queue, but to no avail.

ThanksMake sure the RIGHT printer is selected.
If it is, restart the printer, and then the computer.

Also, what Operating System and what Printer is this? The printer is attached to a network running Windows Server 2003. There are a number of users all using a mixture of Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP.

I've tried switching the printer off and on again (I even pulled out the power cable).

How can I restart the PC when there are a number of PCs sending documents to the PC? Do I have to restart the server to which the printer is attached?I would end all tasks, then restart the computer that the printer is set up on.1) Make sure the printer is not in "Offline" mode.

2) Check the IP port the print queue is using on the Windows Server 2003 box.  (i.e.: IP_10.0.0.20)

3) Check the IP address on the printer itself (i.e.: 10.0.0.20).

4) Make sure the IP addresses of the port in #2 and the TCP/IP settings on the printer in #3 are the same.  If they're not, nobody's printing.

5) If they are the same, then on the Server 2003 box: Start -> Run -> services.msc -> stop and start the Print Spooler service.

6) If that doesn't work, reboot the server and the printer at the same time.

7) If that doesn't work, check the NIC on the printer.  It could be bad.  Alternatively, make sure the cable is not bad.  Also make sure the port on the switch the printer is going to is not bad. Thanks for all the great help on this one.

The problem has now been solved. The print server needed a kick up the rear end processor. In short, it needed rebooting.

I shall hold on to all of your tips and refer to them in the future.

Thanks again.

Solve : Workstations dont want to connect to server anymore?

Answer»

There are currently running 4-5 work stations networked to a server.  After doing some some moving AROUND and remodeling,   the workstations now are no longer receiving data from the server.  So the workstations cannot even access the programs and STUFF.  They can still connect to the internet though.  All the workstations are operating on Windows XP.

I dont know what happened, the workstations were connecting fine before the remodeling.  What seems to be the problem now, and how do I fix it
That COULD be a number of things:

1) Network cable unplugged on server.
2) Network cable on server plugged into the wrong place (like to another PC or a wireless access point).
3) Server's IP configuration is wrong/missing.  Make sure it's IP address is static and is the correct IP.
4) DNS server/service may be down.  Make sure that's up and running.
5) BAD NIC/cable on server/bad port on switch server is connected to.the problem was the drivers, i just reloaded them and problem fixed
Good.  Glad you solved the problem!

I'll remember "drivers" next time I make one of those MINI troubleshooting lists for that kind of thing. I know its kinda weird how sometimes fro no apparent reason, the drivers get corrupt or the internet connectivity is lost or .....

Solve : Wireless or Ethernet, Which is faster connection??

Answer»

About TWO weeks ago, I bought a Linksys router with ethernet and WIRELESS capability. I am using this router at 512 kbps speed (we have 2 laptops with wireless capability) through its wireless function (approximate distance from the router is about 12 meters each) but it seems it is a little bit slow. My question is: which is BETTER and faster connection, wireless or ethernet? Some friends are saying that ethernet connection is better and faster because it is directly connected to the router. Is this true? Please give technical advice. Thank you very much.In short, yes.

If you're directly connected to the router/modem, it will be much faster and much stronger.Average broadband connections in the US: about 1-10 Mbps.
Wireless-G connection: 54 Mbps.
Ethernet connection: 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps.

For just connecting to the Internet, it doesn't MATTER much aside from latency.  For transferring files from one PC to another on your local network, Ethernet is MUCH faster.

Quote

See the post above.

It's better and faster because the Ethernet connection supports a higher speed, not just because it's "directly" connected to the router.

Solve : DHCP in VPN - Best Practice?

Answer»

I am interested in knowing what the best practice is for dynamically issuing addresses to clients on a VPN.

I have a Windows 2003 AD network where a DHCP server has already been configured with a POOL of addresses (we're a small company so only ONE subnet). I was just going to let DCHP issue addresses to the VPN clients from the pool that's already set up. However in another post a comment was made that a separate address pool should be set up for VPN clients.

So - if it is best to set up a different address pool, why? I don't mind reading if you have an article to reference - I just can't seem to FIND any on my own.

Is it better to let the DHCP server on the network issue the addresses or should I let my firewall (which has it's own DHCP server and is where the client VPN connection terminates) issue the addresses?

Thanks for the help.On the numerous Small Business Server 2000 and 2003 boxes I've set up with Routing and Remote Access, I usually just let DHCP hand out the IP addresses.  It makes life a lot easier.

However, I can see why others would suggest a static pool--makes it easier when you assign certain IP ranges to certain things.

Like if you use 10.0.0.x (x being 1-254):

1-20 could be routers, MANAGED switches, etc (which are static ANYWAY)
21-40 could be servers (static)
41-60 could be printers (usually static)
61-80 could be miscellaneous devices (wi-fi cameras, miscellaneous IP-based equipment) (probably a good idea to be static)
81-100 could be your VPN pool (put these in RRAS)
101-200 could be your workstations (DHCP--make this your scope)

Solve : Ethernet vs Crossover cables?

Answer»

At the moment my PC connects wirelessly to the router downstairs. It is working fine, although it does drop the speed now and again. Now I'm CONSIDERING connecting the PC and router directly with a cable.

I have a spare roll of Ethernet Crossover cable which is plenty long enough to do the JOB. However, I'm not SURE if it will do the job, or if I need a standard Ethernet cable. No problem if it isn't, but would be nice. I believe a direct connection is faster anyway.PC to router requires the standard ethernet cable.

A crossover cable is to join identical ports (LAN) of computers together. What this does is 'crosses over' specific cables that in essence change in to out, and out to in so that the two computers can talk.

The standard ethernet cable CONNECTIONS are different on either end.

For example, an ethernet cable has 8 pins.
Pin 1 on the ethernet cable goes to point 1 in the machine
Pin 2 to 2 etc,

On a crossover cable:
Pin 1 goes to 8
Pin 2 goes to 7 etc. (format differs slightly as you go through the 8 pins but hopefully you get the idea).

So if I connect the router and PC with this crossover cable, it won't work? I found this earlier when Googling

http://www.certforums.co.uk/forums/archive/index.php?t-16840.html

I guess if I can't use it, I can modify it by removing the one RJ-45 connector, get a new one and wire it the right way? The cable is labelled UTP PATCH CABLE CAT 5EIf you have both items you could try it anyway - but as a rule 99.9% of domestic routers would use the Ethernet cable and not the crossover.

Business devices would have both functions of router and switch so it could restrict traffic to one direction and prevent what they call 'collision', but if you are using a shop bought off the shelf £70/$110 router I doubt yours will.

Well, well, well. I did what you suggested, sucked it lol, and it works! No idea why, I ain't asking questions. Btw, it is a Belkin Wireless G Modem Router. Most switches and routers these DAYS have "auto-sensing," which will automatically detect patch and crossover cables and get them to work regardless...

Solve : I tried to encrypt my wireless router, I can now no longer gain access.?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a Sweex 140 Nitro XM Broadband router which I have been using happily unsecured for the last 2 years.
I decided this was silly & logged into the site http://198.168.0.200 Went to Wireless Security tab & enabled WPA.  Then typed in a WEP KEY Generator Passphrase, I made this 23 characters long a mix of letters & numbers.  I THOUGHT I was being so clever.  I then clicked create & some letters & numbers appeared in the Key 1-4 box, I didn't take much NOTICE as a countdown box had appeared & when it got to zero my Internet connection disappeared.  When I try to connect now WINDOWS Vista asks for Security Type, Encryption Type, NETWORK Security Key & Key Index.  Whatever I put in these boxes doesn't work.  I am now connected directly to my Modem through a LAN cable if I attach my wireless router I can't access the internet.  I have unplugged my router & reset it to factory settings but still no access.
I am assuming that I should have written down the info in the Key Boxes & my problem would be solved, but I didn't, can I get my Network Security key from somewhere as I have my passphrase ?  If not has ANYONE any advice. ThanksWEP and WPA are two different types of encryption.

Usually with WPA, you just type the password you want to use into your router.  Put that same password (along with the SSID) into any laptops and other stuff that will be using your wireless router connection.

Right now, with your router factory-reset'd, wireless may be turned off or it may be reverted back to unsecured with its default SSID (usually the manufacturer's name).

Solve : Change of ISP - what happens to email??

Answer»

My ISP is AOL and I intend to change.

I presume that means a change of email address and program and I'm not sure what happens to my present saved (on AOL) email.

Can I save it somehow to disk?

Any other tips or info on changing ISP would be appreciated.I should perhaps have mentioned that I'm in the UK.If you change your ISP, and the mail is stored with them, then you would lose it.
Not being an AOL customer I don't know if it's possible to save the messages to disk, but I would say it should be possible somehow.
Out of INTEREST, who are you switching to?Calum - thanks for reply.  I haven't decided yet who I'll change to.  I'm leaving AOL because of continuing CONNECTIVITY problems and their poor customer service.

First enquiries favour a smaller co.: Fast Co. - slightly more expensive than AOL, but very good reports on a comparison website (ISP Review).  BT also looked at, but their 18 month contract put me off, also I'm a bit wary of the big companies.

Re the emails - I think I'll just MAKE copies of the few that I really want to save.

You can set email forwarding service: http://www.emailaddresses.com/email_forward.htm, which will give you time to inform everyone about your email address change.Broni - many thanks for link.silkie, I wasn't aware of Fast Co, but they look OK.
You may want to look at Tiscali (my personal choice, very cheap with PHONE thrown in) and Bethere (very fast and cheap, but not AVAILABLE everywhere).
Just some thoughts, anyhow, and I agree about AOl, their customer support is the worst ever. You're welcome

Solve : Belkin Router?

Answer»

I'm trying to set up a NETWORK so that I can use my laptop off of my router. I have my comcast modem hooked up to my belkin Wireless G router with 4 ports on it. I have the comcast modem hooked into the main port on my Belkin Router and then I have an ethernet cord running from one of the other ports on the router to the computer. So I tried that and I get connection THOUGH my desktop. My desktop is a GATEWAY E 4000 running windows XP service pack 3. Ok so I'm all hooked up I start the software that came with the router it gives me all theses steps make sure its plugged in and then it says searching for connectivity my connection on the computer goes out at that point and restart and then a message comes up that says that the router isnt connected. Well I can access the internet fine on my desktop ,but I cant cant a wireless SIGNAL off with my laptop running a Belkin G notebook card. I realize I have to establish a connection to a network ,but I mean I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Is your laptop network card switch on?yeah I'm getting a few signals from outside my house that are secure but I mean I'm 3 feet away from my desktop modem ,and I'm not getting a signal. The Belkin Router tho the software for it wouldnt reconize that I had the router plugged in and I mean I had the modem going into the main router port and then I had an ethernet CABLE going into another port on the router and then into the back of the computer.I suspect, the router is bad, straight out of the box. Same thing happened to my friend couple of days ago. One computer was able to connect, the other, not. Replace router.
