Solve : Connections problems?

Answer»

I just installed a new verizon dsl modem 327W. it works fine on the main computer and my labtop can connect wirelessly, but on the second computer i get the wrong ip address 169.***.*.* i tried everything, i GOT the new modem/router because it always said connected but couldn't get on the internet. I went to the dos prompt and did a ipconfig release and renew(it times out reffering to the dhcp) and it still comes up with the same incorrect ip address. someone gave me the computer and i formatted it at a friends house and it connected great at his house(he uses cable internet). I disable the ethernet card and then enabled it, I deleted it and reinstalled it and still the same thing. I am running XP on everything.Do you know what the reference to DHCP is fully?

Get to the COMMAND prompt and run ipconfig /all - check the network devices (LAN and wireless if applicable) and ensure both say DHCP enabled. If it's not your system may be using a manually assigned IP address - check your network CONNECTIONS properties through Control Panel.

Try using netsh reset winsock catalog, after that select Y at the prompt - it will ADVISE you need to reboot.

After you load back up check again to see what you have.

Solve : Sony VAIO Wireless Connection Problems?

Answer»

Hey there,

I did a search and didn't manage to find anything very on the topic (SORRY if I missed similar threads!), but I recently got a Sony VAIO laptop with VISTA, and the internet's already being a problem.

We have a COMCAST wireless connection at home, and while our other Dell laptop is perfectly fine and working on it, the VAIO is posing some difficulties. When it connects to the wireless, it's very slow. Sometimes, it just doesn't *see* the wireless connection as there (even though the Dell is constantly online, so obviously the network is working).

I've heard something about VAIO incompatibility problems and ways to get AROUND that - does anyone know of anything that might help? We'd really like to be able to use it online properly.

Much APPRECIATED,

RuxiWhat about when you are connected with a wire?

Also, can you try ANOTHER wireless environment?

Any Yellow Question Marks/Exclamation Marks in Device Manager?Did u tried Windows Wireless Zero Configuration:

Here is the Steps to Enable It :
To start Wireless Zero Configuration in Windows Vista you need to log in as an Administrator.
Click on Start and Control Panel
Select Administrative Tools and then Services
In the Services box scroll down the list of Services (Local) until you find the one labelled Wired AutoConfig and DOUBLE click it.
In the Wired AutoConfig Properties (Local Computer) box change the Startup type to Automatic
Click on Start and once the service has started click on OK
Now find the service labelled WLAN AutoConfig and double click it.
In the WLAN AutoConfig Properties (Local Computer) box change the Startup type to Automatic
Click on Start and once the service has started click on OK
Go to File and Exit to close the Services window

Solve : How to get a text listing of files on a network drive using SonicWall VPN?

Answer»

I'm working remotely on a company laptop. It's running Windows XP. I am editing documents and then will be PROVIDING an html-ized list of the documents to the company's web people (I know html, and that's not my problem).

At this point I have about 2,700 files. Obviously I'd rather not retype all of those filenames. I know that normally I'd be able to get a command prompt and use the dir command to get a list, and I think I'd use something like: "dir L:\CompanyFolder\MyFolder > filenames.txt" (where filenames.txt is the list it generates). I don't have a lot of experience with this, just figured it out from online GUIDES.

However, I can't figure out how to get the computer to recognize that I'm not looking for a directory of something in my C drive but am INSTEAD looking for a subfolder of the L drive which is a network drive. I don't know how to change directories to get to a network drive. Possibly COMPLICATING things, the company uses SONICWALL Global VPN for all outside access.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Solve : Internet Cuts Out?

Answer»

My dad hosts a server from our house, and every time SOMEONE connect to that server, it disconnects me, and every other computer in the house, from the internet. So far all I know about his setup that he has is that every computer in the house except that server is connected to a Linksys router which is then connected to our MODEM, an Ambit U10C020 . The internet for the server goes straight from the modem, into a computer he has on the server rack, and then that computer is connected to a switch, which then the server is finally connected to, so I don't think the server has 100% direct access. I've tried enabling the QoS settings on our modem, but to no avail, and I don't think our modem has any of those settings. Due to the fact that this is a server my dad is hosting out, I don't want my internet to perfect, all I want is to not be kicked 100% offline litterally every fifteen minutes. Anything I can do?A few things come to mind....

are you logging into his server? Are you part of a domain with his server running it or a stand alone machine? What is running the DHCP service? Dads server or the router? Or both? What OS are you running?

What about asking for dad's help?

Dont really know how to answer all of this. No, I'm not logging into his server, its one of his clients connecting that steals all of the bandwidth and boots me offline. I can gain access to his server physically and log onto its terminal if that's what you mean. No, theres no domain or network between my dad's server and my computer, as I said, the servers connected directly to the modem, and everything else is connected to the modem through a separate router, the server doesn't really have one, UNLESS somehow the terminal is functioning as one. Dunno what the DHCP service is. As for dad's help, he doesn't CARE, he doesn't do anything besides play solitare at the home, so the only answer I ever get is "eh". I am running Windows XP Pro, SP3, the server is running Windows XP Server, with at least SP2, but probably 3 installed.bumpbump x2, also, on a seperate note, for some reason I cannot connect directly to my modem. I plug my eithernet cable directly into it, and yet, cant get internet, *censored*?

Solve : Bluetooth has killed my Wifi?

Answer»

Hi there guys,
I recently installed a Belkin BLUETOOTH USB Adapter, and now I cant use the internet
The computer tells me that it is infact connected to the wireless, but when I use either FF, IE or Google Chrome I get the 'Page cannot be displayed' error.
I THINK that the computer is trying to connect to the internet Via the Bluetooth dongle.
I have uninstalled the dongle via the Hardware Manager, but still to no avail
The Bluetooth does work and I can use it with my Phone.
The laptop is an XP SP2 with a Realtek network card, and a Netgear DG834G Router.
I have booted up into Ubuntu and the Wireless worked fine, internet and everything, so there must be a setting SOMEWHERE in Windows :
Really cant understand it...
I did find a case the same as mine, but I cant REMEMBER what I Google'd to find it
I WOULD System Restore, but it has been disabled, so I have nowhere to Restore to..
Any suggestions please
Thanks
Peace

Chris

EDIT: I disconnected the wireless, to try to repair it, now it wont connect again.

Solve : Strange Wireless Network Behavior?

Answer»

I have a Toshiba Satellite running Windows XP and using the built-in wireless card to establish connection.

I have access to a Linksys wireless router. Whenever I attempt to connect to it it it freezes at "WAITING for network" and eventually the operation times out. While it is waiting for network, I can sometimes get access to the internet through the wireless connection despite it not being connected.

After the time out it returns to the "NOT CONNECTED" state, but if I double-click it asks me if I really want to disconnect. During this time I can also, sometimes get internet connectivity.

Regardless, the connectivity is intermittent and cuts out often. Heavy-handed use of ipconfig /renew keeps it going a little longer, but it eventually collapses altogether.

I have tested the router with other laptops and they connect without trouble, and my own computer has this same issue when connecting to other wireless networksas well.

The last thing I changed on my system was installing AVG intivirus, and CCleaner, both of which have otherwise resulted in my computer running faster.

Thanks in advance if anyone has any advice. I'm hoping to avoid a complete reinstall of Windows, especially since I have to cope with using a restore partition instead of a fresh install from a disk.

i wouldn't have been frustrated except that my laptop and my friends laptop are both faster which is why i am confusedWait, what exactly is your question?

You said your internet went from 900kb/s to 35kb/s and then you said your laptop was was the same speed as everyone else's? Right?on the same connection my desktop computer is really slow and my laptop is really fast. i was wondering why my desktop is slow.Ok, so Laptops hooked up to the router work very fast.

How do i configure the network cards and wireless router for the DHCP utility in windows server 2000 to DISTRIBUTE the ip addresses correctly through the wireless router and out to the pc's.You plug the server (one card only is needed) into the router. You install and enable dhcp SERVICES on the server, and make sure they are off on the router. Also, give the server a static IP address, and reserve it in dhcp settings.

Solve : New to group, need help with DSL home network question?

Answer»

Hey all

I am looking into getting DSL service for my home. My question is, I've seen some products out there that are wireless routers but also contain a DSL modem within them. Is there a proper NAME for these devices? I would like to get a 802.11n router with a built in DSL modem, but at a loss on how to google for that.

I was looking at getting the NETGEAR DGN2000 (http://www.netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/WirelessNRoutersandGateways/DGN2000.aspx), but on their website it SAYS it won't be AVAILABLE in US stores for the next 2 months.

Is there something out there that's comparable to this, should I wait for this DGN2000 or is there something someone can suggest? I've heard that gigabit N routers are supposed to be the best, but are there any with a DSL modem built in?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What would you like the server to do?

Specifically, do you want the server to:

a) store files for everyone on your network to access?
b) distribute settings between all your computers for security purposes (or just to MAKE everything similar)?
c) host a web site?
d) host e-mail?
e) host FTP?
f) back up your data?
G) act as a router/firewall?
h) act as a VPN server?

There are plenty of things a server can do. We just need to know what you want it to do...

Solve : Broken MTU?

Answer»

My brother got home from school today and our MTU setting randomly changed. Xbox Live requires a minimum MTU setting of 1364.

It has always passed the test until today. Before we waited about 30 minutes, and it started working again, but this time it isn't FIXING itself.

We contacted Earthlink VIA online chat, and they said if we reset our modem using the recessed reset button, that the MTU setting would automatically CHANGE, but it didn't work.

I'm fairly sure there isn't a setting to manually change it. We both looked for it before calling them, and Earthlink would have MENTIONED it if there was such a setting.

We have a Netopia 3341-ELK modem. Is the modem connected directly to the XBox or are you using a router? If you're using a router, adjust the MTU there.

If it has FTP, go to your browser, and type ftp://ftp.<IP of server>/... Do you see the files here?i'm very new at this stuff, so please bear with me......

to get the ip address for the server i went to the command prompt and typed ipconfig. i was trying some other ideas that i had found online, and this ip address didn't seem to work. so i went to showipaddress.com. this gave me a different ip address. anyway, after your suggestion from my laptop i typed the ftp://ftp and tried both ip addresses. the response i get is "FTP Folder Error: Windows cannot access this folder. Make sure you typed the file name correctly and that you have permission to access the folder. Details: The server name or address could not be resolved." No it wasn't, but good thinking anyway...

I'm not sure how to check if it has FTP support... What is the FULL name of the actuall server, not the OS?
Is it Windows Server 2000?dell poweredge 1600scFrom what I can gather in a search, it does have FTP support...

Give me a few minutes to figure out how to set it up... I'm sorry, but I wasn't able to find anything...

Maybe someone else can help you from here, but I have no more ideas...

Good luck anyway.

Solve : Where to search a website??

Answer»

Hello everyone, I mostly prefer the online way to retrieve any information about certain products. I consider that online SURFING is the most easy and useful way to go through the complete facet of the product or the service to be purchased but the ACTUAL problem comes when I don’t get the exact website of the product or the service which has to be purchased, so I want to know that is there any service available where I can get the required website.
Any help is appreciated.
If i'm UNDERSTANDING you right then Google (the greatest thing ever invented....) should do the trick.

Solve : Laptop won't connect to the internet through wireless router?

Answer»

Who's ready to have some fun?

I have an HP Pavilion laptop that runs Vista, and used to run the internet very well! But then I unplugged my linksys Wireless-G broadband router and my Westell Bellsouth modem to move my computer desk a few feet.

It's heavy, ok?

When I plugged everything back up, the trouble started. My PC still has internet, but it has a line going straight to the router. My laptop, however, only connects to the router itself, telling me I only have Local only access. I tried diagnosing and repairing, and it gives me this little GEM:

Cannot comunicate with Primary DNS Server(192.168.1.254)

It also tells me it's a problem that can't be repaired automatically, so I'm forces to find out what I'm doing before I do it. I went so far as to log onto my router's homepage and change the type to "PPEoE." Of course, doing that knocked out the internet on the PC and still didn't help, so I switched it back and went through the arduous task of resetting all the unsuccessful repair jobs (trying to set up a static IP, turning off all my firewalls, things like that).

Before this all happened, my internet was fine! Well, save for the off-and-on 'flicker' that would cut off the internet for a split second, but then it would come back. I no longer experience that on my PC, but at the COST of my laptop's accessibility, I don't think it was a fair trade.

I'll be happy to give whatever INFO you guys need. I've tested it on another router and it works fine, and I've connected it straight to the modem and got internet, but I also have a linksys wireless 'key' that I can use to connect a computer that doesn't have wireless to the router. I turned off my laptop's card, put the key in, tried to connect, and ended up with the same result: Connected to the router, but not to the internet.

Good luck, and thanks for any help you can give!If another router works, it is very likely the one you are trying to use right now is damaged.Hm... it's a possibility, but why would it not be GIVING me internet on my laptop if it's giving it to my PC so readily?

I did test my gameboy on it, though, and I could not connect to the wifi with it. It could be broken, but I believe it is more likely that it is simply denying outside connections through some option that I am not aware of.

Oh, so the wireless isn't working?I believe it is, actually. My laptop can connect to the linksys itself, but it has a local only connection, while my PC rejoices in the magesty of its internet. How about, if you hard wire laptop to the router, and if that doesn't work, straight to the modem.Hardwiring doesn't let me connect to the internet either, though it does get local access to the router. Hooking it straight to the modem, though, gives me internet with an IP like 192.168.1.94Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK.

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK.

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.Woah, Broni!

One of those will surely work... I'm not sure, but that's a whole battery to try.Disconnecting them didn't work, sadly. After thirty seconds, they just popped back and gave me the same old song and dance.

I did manage to get internet when my laptop connected to the modem, but I can't carry the modem with me through the house, so I had to scrap that idea. I unplugged it and went about trying the other fixes.

I ran CMD as an administrator and managed to run both fixes, but neither of them had a noticeable effect.

I did, however, get the gall to try something. I checked my PC and noticed that the connection it had with my router had a static DNS address. 205 152 37 23

I put that on my laptop and success, internet! I celebrated too early, though, as I noticed that both internets couldn't be running at the same time. Bringing up a page on the PC would shut the laptop's internet down, and vice versa. However, I switched it around, gave the laptop the static and set the PC on automatic.

The end result was a laptop with internet and a PC that thought it could access the internet but was only giving me my cache pages.

So I gave the static DNS back to my PC, also keeping it on the laptop, and expected it to have the intermittent internet problem again...

I don't think it does.

I might have fixed the problem... but I want to keep it active to test it a bit more. Chances are I'll restart it someday and everything will fall down around me. Armed with this new information, is there any more advice I should know about? Anything to expect or something else to try to ensure it doesn't happen again?Did you actually go through all the steps above? Not the very last one. The winsockfix mentioned it was for XP. Running vista, that didn't seem to be the most prudent choice, though I did try. PRESSING the 'backup registry button' didn't do anything, and actually telling it to fix it gave me an error, a window that said "Please reboot your computer," and another that said "Error 52, File not found" or something.

Everything seems to be working fine now, though.Just unplug the router and modem and make sure its properly plugged in.....I had the same problem or the network key isn't put in properly.......If it doesn't work then something wrong with your router....

Solve : How do you block/ban a IP address.......??

Answer»

Okay, I've been getting alot of bad messages at my homepage and I want to block or ban so he/she will not be ABLE to come again or just redirect them to another page........Does your site use cPanel? If so, GO into IP Deny Manager, and type in their IP ADDRESS, if you have it of course. If you dont have cPanel, then look at this:
http://www.killersites.com/mvnforum/mvnforum/viewthread?thread=3363

If you have a FORUM that has bad messages on it, then you can ban them using other methods built into the forums... if this is a forum, tell us what kind it is, and also, telling us what kind of comment system it is if this isnt a forum would be HELPFUL as well.

Solve : ADSL Modems?

Answer»

Can you run two modems on the one phone line. In different parts of the house, I have a two story house but the wireless router will not reach up stairs, thought you may be able to connect two modems to the one phone line or there HARDWARE which will allow you to do this? OjasWill your service provider even allow you to have two modems on one account?

You might look into ways to boost the signal gain on the wireless router.

Please list more SPECIFICS about your equipment.

Thank you.No, it WONT work.

See, the line will only support one modem. Its not quite like Ethernet.

You might look into getting a NEW router... what router do you have right now?

Make sure your router is in a central location of your home... Preferably at head height on the first floor.

Is the connection weak, or just not there at all? I wouldent really say another router is needed unless the connection is below 50%.

EDIT: You might also make sure the antenna is facing directly up.

Solve : Insanly Slow Internet?

Answer»

MY internet has always been slow, its never really bugged me, until it got even slwoer today.

Right now, at its maximum im getting about 24 kbps and over the last 3 days i've been getting less then 10 kbps. This is incredibly frustrating since it now takes me over an hour and a half to download a 30 mb file.

I do not have dial up and i know this is pretty much dial up speed. As far as i do know i have the lowest of the qwuest services, which says you can get up to 1.5 mbps.

If anyone else has this service, please let me know what your averige downlaod speed is so i know if i need to go yell me head off at qwuest, or if i just need to upgrade. Quote

at its maximum im getting about 24 kbps
Says where?
What type of connection is it? DSL?
Windows version? Quote
wow my friend has dialup and he gets FASTER then that.

It's nice that you have a friend.

Don't you think that comments like that might be a source of more frustration to the original poster, who is paying for faster service and more bandwidth, and not getting what's paid for?

Ouch that is painful.
http://www.speedtest.net
Has a Global Stats section where you can select your town and see what others are getting are getting with different services.

On your end it could be the wiring in the house, modem, or even a problem with your network it you are using one.

I had a problem like this when we switched to cable. The first was the low grade, out dated cable wire running in the wall had to be upgraded to a good shielded RG-6 along with the splitter in the attic upgraded.
The other problem was the cable company itself. I am on the tip of a peninsula and we are the last to get upgrades to the system. After a few years they did get to upgrading and it gave us a 10x increase in speed.
Call your provider, they might SEND a tech to test the connection to your house and HELP find where the problem lies outside of your computer.

Solve : LAN Cable umplugged... not the norm i think.?

I am running VISTA on my 2 laptops and xp on 2 desktops, this all runs through a bthomehub and netgear mini hub. now everything was running fine until the other day when for no reason, 1 laptop now says no LAN cable plugged in? YET it is, If i plug my other laptop(2) into the WALL it picks up the signal and goes online and sees the rest of my NETWORK. thinking that maybe the lan card was U/s in laptop (1) i plugged it into a seperate socket in the wall. , it then PICKED up the internet and signal? so i can can plug both laptops into all ports i have around my house except for one, then only laptop(2) and not both work in it. i have cut and inserted a new module into the wall, crimped the cables into it as before. replaced the patch cables and still no good. i have also checked the minihub and homehub for mac blocks or firewall issues. Please is there something i am missing here. cheers Alan

Solve : Sending emails from Windows Mail. Error?

Answer»

Hi,
One of our ladies at work here has just set up Windows mail on her Vista laptop to accept her Tiscali email. The laptop is connected to our network but is not a member of our domain as it is Vista Home premium and therefore cannot be connected to a domain. So, she cannot use our company's normal email system.

She can receive email from Tiscali but when she sends email she gets the following error message: -

An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'Re: CA aout et septembre 2008',
Account: 'pop.tiscali.co.uk', SERVER: 'smtp.tiscali.co.uk', Protocol: SMTP,
Server Response: '554 Sorry, your non-local IP address (213.128.239.19) is not
allowed to send email via me.', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 554,
Error Number: 0x800CCC6F

I understand that this MAY be due to a clash between our ISP and Tiscali. Is there any WAY around this?

ThanksBy changing from a Tiscali account to a Yahoo.co.uk account, the problem was solved.

Tiscali must be blocking the passing on of email from one isp to another before sending it on to the recipient. Yahoo allows this though!

Solve : sending an email from an asp page on a server.?

Answer»

My colleague has been writing a web based package for our companies Windows Server 2003 domain.

At one point in the package it gets the server to send an email to an internal email address. This WORKS fine when he's running it using IIS on his own XP PC. However, when he tries running the package on a Windows Server 2003 server he gets the following error message: -

No CONNECTION could be MADE because the target machine actively refused it 127.0.0.1:25

Any ideas as to what I must tweak in Server 2003 to get this WORKING?Port 25 is...
Oh gosh.. something to do with mail.
Ah, Port 25 is SMTP.

You either:
a) Have no SMTP server running on your server...
b) Have blocked Port 25 or SMTP related services in the firewall.

Solve : slow internet with smc gigabit switch?

Answer»

Hi all,
I recently installed an SMC CGS8 8 port gigabit switch on my home network and while the intranet works great as far as transferring large (1gb+) files my internet speed seems to have slowed to almost a crawl.
Here's the current SETUP:
Cable modem to Linksys 4 port router w/switch out to SMC switch out to 5 PC's all running latest WinXP Pro on a workgroup. I need the router for a web/ftp server I use for pre publication work.
If I go straight from the modem or the router I get good internet speed, once I throw the switch in it drops off.
It seems that when I first open the browser (IE, Chrome or Firefox) it takes up to 45 seconds for a page to appear. Often times it seems to TIME out 'cause if I hit 'refresh' the page suddenly shows up. This happens on a new instance of the browser or when following a link. Email doesn't seem to be effected.
I've already tried other configurations but this is the only way to have the router and the switch. I've also restarted all the components, replaced cables, etc.
I thought of another option while writing this but I'm not sure if it will work. My motherboard has two gigabit lan ports on it. Could I have one cable going through the switch for file transfers on the intranet and another going to the modem for the internet? If so how would that be configured? Like I said, I'm not sure how this works with two cards as I've never used it before.
Thanks for any ideas,
ScurvyAS far as I know..you cannot get gigabyte speeds from WAN, unless your ISP supports it. The only country (and correct me if I'm wrong) that supports gigabyte WAN is Japan.

If you have a home network and are setting up a gigabyte LAN, then all of your hardware should support gigabyte technology...

All COMPUTERS should have gigabyte NICs, the router should support it, as well as the router. While your local speeds will be awesome, your internet speeds will not be as noticeable.

Anyone...feel FREE to correct me if I'm mistaken.

I'm assuming your internet speeds are dropping due to the router not supporting the technology.

Mind if I ask...what model Linksys router you have?Sorry for the delay in replying, been out of town.
Anyway, I know I won't get gig speed from the WAN but what's happening is the Internet speed is slower if I go through the switch than if I just go through the router or straight to the modem.
All the cards are gigabit except one which will change in a few days and they all will be.

So what you're saying, I think, is that if anything is NOT gigabit then I will actually get slower speeds?
So if I introduce say a 4 port router with a gigabit switch in it I should get full speed all around?
The router is a besfr41 (Wired). It's old but still kickin'. I was thinking it might be the router but again, if I take out the switch everything works fine.

Solve : Hooking up multiple computers to a router?

Answer»

I have a Linksys wired router and a Westell 6100 modem. I had these both working well together and now all of a sudden I can't have more than one computer on the INTERNET at a time. I have three computers that used to be on the Internet all the time. Two are running Windows XP and one is running Vista Home Basic.

The other odd thing is that the two XP systems each work when each is connected directly to the modem. The Vista system used to work, but now when I hook it up to the modem it says limited or no connectivity. I know it is not the NIC on the Vista system because I borrowed someone elses modem to test it and it worked fine.

I called Verizon and set the modem for Bridge mode so it could work with the router. Then they told me to CALL Linksys and the Linksys people said that I needed a NEW router. The router I have is only a month old so I took it back and exchanged it for a new one. I tried the new router and it still doesn't work.

I still believe it is the modem, but Verizon doesn't think so. Does anyone have an opinion on this or suggests on things I could try?

Thanks!I think it's the router too.........I did not have good luck with my Linksys router either. You may want to do this:

1- Check the Linksys site to see if they have a new firmware out for your router, if so, upgrade the firmware.

2- Reset the router to factory default setting and then reconfigure it for your network.

Hope this helps.

CheersSo you think the firmware on this router needs to be UPDATED even though it is a brand new router? I will give this a try later. (I'm at work right now.)

As far as resetting the router to factory defaults, I've done that a number of times already.

I don't understand, when I set it up originally, I don't remember having this much trouble with it.

Do you think it's possible that the modem is starting to get weak? It confuses me because like I said the two XP systems work, but the Vista one doesn't when hooked directly to the modem. The Vista system did work when I tested it with another persons modem.

I'm sorry, but something deep in my gut still tells me that there is an issue with the modem, but I'm reluctant to get another modem because everyone I talk to says it's probably the router. (I feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place.)

Thanks for the suggestions. Quote from: Panda25 on September 12, 2008, 11:02:06 AM

I have a Linksys wired router and a Westell 6100 modem.,

How old is the wired router? Some of those older Linksys wired routers (BEFSR41s in particular) with older firmware have problems with Vista, even with a firmware update.

The Vista system used to work, but now when I hook it up to the modem it says limited or no connectivity.

Good thing. It may have been in "router" mode previously.

Quote

...guess that answers my question above...

so I took it back and exchanged it for a new one. I tried the new router and it still doesn't work.

I still believe it is the modem, but Verizon doesn't think so. Does anyone have an opinion on this or suggests on things I could try?

Thanks!

Have you power-cycled the modem (UNPLUGGED it for about 3 minutes, then plug it back in)?

I'm assuming this is DSL, so...are ALL your phones that are sharing the DSL telephone number filtered? If EVEN one is not filtered, that can bleed the DSL signal into that particular phone and make the signal too weak to support multiple PCs.

If it's PPPoE, then it may require a user name and password to connect. Since Verizon changed their modem to Bridge mode, you may have to put the PPPoE credentials in the router itself (they were stored in Verizon's modem). My wired router is BEFSR41s, but it has worked before with my Vista system.

Now I'm starting to question if the ethernet port on this modem is going bad. I tried the USB connection to the Vista system and it works fine.

Yes, I have power cycled the modem numerous times. Still no dice.

As far as the DSL filter, when I originally got DSL, the phone company put a filter on the outside box so the entire house is filtered.

I tried that putting my user name & pass word into the router for the modem and it still didn't work.

I am currently looking into getting another modem because I strongly believe the ethernet port on this one is dieing.

Thanks for your reply.Just wanted to update everyone that replied to my post about my router and modem not working. I think the ethernet port had lost some of its power from a lightning storm we had this summer. The problem was NOT the router. I purchased a new modem on EBay for $23.00 and now all my computers that were hooked up to the router now work! Even hooking my Vista computer up directly to the new modem works. (It didn't before.) I'm so glad it was a cheap fix. Hopefully this will help someone else who may have the same problem down the line.

Solve : IP address conflict with wireless routers and ICS?

Answer»

My internet connection is supplied through Linksys powerline adapters running Roadrunner to the office. I have a desktop running windows xp. I recently bought a laptop running vista. At home, I have successfully set up an Extreme N D-link router. I am now TRYING to do the same thing at work. I have hooked up the router to the desktop and tried to enable ICS. It tells me that

"Internet Connection Sharing cannot be enabled due to an IP address conflict on the network. ICS requires the host to be CONFIGURED to use 192.168.0.1. Please ensure that no other client on the network is configured to use 192.168.0.1."

Computer people have tried to help me, but to no avail. Do I simply release and renew the ip address on the desktop or should I set up a static ip address on the desktop and what would I set it to? I know just enough to be dangerous. Also, I WANT to make sure that anything I am doing on my end will not AFFECT the other desktop located in a different room... PLEASE HELP Thank youHi! Solve : IP address/Linksys WRT54G?

Answer»

Hello EVERYONE,
Have a small issue that after a number of ATTEMPTS haven't been able to overcome.. I have a LINKSYS WRT54G router that is working fine.. have a couple of pc's hooked up cable and one laptop that is wirelesss, all working well..
My wife purchased a use laptop from the company she works for that had been used in a wireless manner.. the company as supposedly deleted all networking and access that pertained to them..
Now the issue, I have downloaded LELA on the laptop and used it to establish a wireless connection (the laptop does have a cable connection and works fine).. have connected with the network, no problem, but everytime it tries to go wireless it comes up with a different IP than the router.. I can connect wireless to the network, but will show little or no connectivity as the radio has the WRONG IP address..
Am looking for some help to FIGURE out how to get the wrong IP address out and the proper address in....
Would appreciate your assistance and if you need anymore info, please ask..
Thank you,
LarryHello everyone,
Appearently Linksy solved the problem for me.. it must have gotten tired of my attempts to link up to the router as it done away with my network I had set up, have now a Linksy network and all computers are online..
Not too worried about the security at this point as no one else around wireless and living in a very small town.. maybe setup a network later.
Anyway, issue is over at the moment, thanks for lending a ear..

Solve : network startup choices?

Answer»

Hi, I have a problem with my startup programs, in that, my "always on" internet connection comes up before my firewall. I have tried to create a new connection using my username and password, so I have to click a shortcut to get online, but it wont connect, there is always an error. I was hoping there was some way to open and shutdown the connection without using the disable/enable/repair COMMANDS. I dont actually want my broadband always on, but since it is connected to the wireless router (tiscali) by a cable, I dont know how ELSE to do this. I would like to be able to connect/disconnect from my desktop and have the broadband connect from there, not the startup.
And yes, I am a Networkphobe, its never made that much sense to me )
"Any" help is going to be greatly appreciated. ./.Since you have a router (I assume, secured router), you have nothing to worry about. A router works a s hardware firewall (even better, than software ONE).Good point Broni, but alas it is not secured. It is in fact a combined Broadband/TV/Telephone router from Tiscali.
If there is no solution to this, I may well look into buying a secure box instead.
I hadn't thought of that idea, so thanks. How do you know, it's not secured. Every router should provide firewall protection. Check the manual, or on-line settings.Hi Broni..........you're right, it is firewalled and not just the wireless side as I thought. (took a while to find that one out !)

So I feel a lot more secure in that knowledge, but I would still like to have the wired connection dead on bootup, rather that instantly connected, so my kids cant do anything stupid when they turn it on. (I also don't like being a GHOST bandwidth eater.)

But thanks for your help anyways, although I don't see a solution to this, APART from getting other hardware.

CheersIf it has an on/off switch...simply turn the router off when you're not using it.Yep Saviour, you would be master of the bl**ding obvious.

The router is downstairs, the computer up in the attic and my legs would buckle under the strain.....................Time to draw this post to a close, thanks for your help Broni

Solve : Dial up problem.?

Answer»

Hi all. Can someone help me, anyone familiar with the error 720 in dial up problem? i tried google all the way for solution but nothing seems working. I was just reformat an acer aspire 4520 laptop(quick format). The problem is, when using LAN network, i can get access to internet. However, when dial up for local ISP, there's an error, and it says that connection to remote server cant be establish, change network setting for this connection.

I have query my modem and it work perfectly fine. I tried to remove network COMPONENT from add/remove windows and reinstall back. However it did not working.

For information, before this i have ALREADY face this problem and after many try i managed to solve it. The solution is to remove and reinstall network component. So i guess maybe this time it will work but it not. and all the steps i done before has been repeated but still not working.

An additional, i tried to install a perfectly working wireless device. After installation, i tried to connect to the internet but still the error is same. It now showing the error code, but definition of the error is same. "Connection to remote server cant be establish. Change network setting", and also it stopped at username and PASSWORD verification stage.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem without REFORMATTING? LET me know, thank you.

**Carbon, this laptop is same laptop with one on previous topics if its help.i close this topic. It still not solve yet, but the laptop owner want it back. if anyone know how to solve it, i still reading.

Solve : Limited/Local connetivity?

Answer»

We have a Toshiba P200 laptop and have been connecting it wirelessly to a computer in another room for the internet. The laptop runs Vista Home Premium. For months it has connected to the internet fine, but now it refuses. In control panel-networks & sharing CENTER we get limited connectivity or LOCAL connectivity. In wireless connection STATUS we get IPv4 connectivity - local & IPv6 connectivity -limited. This all started after we uninstalled Norton and tried to install Avast antivirus software. After installing Avast the computer shut down instead of rebooting. We had to do a system restore.

The PC in the other room is using windows '98 and is connected to the router with a cable and is working fine. Any ideas? When you uninstalled Norton, did you restart your computer, checked the control panel to make sure all instances of Norton were gone, and restarted again?

Make sure your firewall is on. Go to the Start Menu, type Firewall, and select "Windows Firewall" (not with Advanced Configuration)
Assure that it is on.

Then click Start, type cmd, and right click cmd and select "Run as Administrator"
Type the following in:

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

Also, is this an Ad-Hock network?Tried what you said. Got the following.
"No operation can be performed on area connection 2 while it's media is disconnected" followed by "an eror occurred while renewing interface wireless network connection: unable to contact your DHCP server"

Any ideas? It sounds like you need to go into your Wireless configuration program in Windows and select your wireless network again... it must have been lost.

Where would I find the wireless configuration program? We tried searching on the start menu, and got no MATCH. Would it be Manage Wireless Networks in the network and sharing centre? We clicked on add wireless network and nothing happened.

Solve : Sudden, and issolated network failure?

Answer»

I've been a long-time lurker on tech forums, and have had wonderful success in correcting any deficient behaviour a machine might unwisely demonstrate, until today.

Today I have run into a problem that I not only can't fix, I can't even diagnose it.

First up, specs for the ailing machine:

Dell Dimension 2400

  • Pentium 4, 2.2 GHz
  • 1 GB RAM
  • Broadcom on-board 10/100 NIC
  • D-Link DGE-530T V.B1 10/100/1000 NIC
  • Dual booting: Windows XP SP3, Slackware 12.1

And now the BACKGROUND:

The above machine is one of three (sometimes four) machines that share a DSL CONNECTION courtesy of a Linksys router. And up until today, there has never been a problem accessing the internet from it. Upon discovering that the machine was not resolving any network hosts, I set about trying to find the weak link in the network chain.

I booted a second machine to see if our network access was down in general; it was able to access the internet, so it wasn't our ISP.

Next I booted into Slackware thinking it might be a glitch in Windows or one of the drivers, but such was not the case, as the problem persisted across party lines.Next up was the router and cable.

I pulled the ethernet cable from the back of the box, plugged it into a laptop, booted it, and discovered the internet was still working. So the cable is good, and the router did not suffer a very selective failure.

Thus I figured it must be that the on-board NIC had failed. So I pulled the (working) NIC from another machine, and installed it in the patient. After DISABLING the on-board NIC, and installing and enabling the drivers for the D-Link, I was still unable to access the internet. One reboot later (I was desperate at this point) the problem remained stubbornly unresolved.

Finally I tried a Linux LiveCD (Knoppix), but despite all my finger crossing, and please, even it couldn't get the machine online.

After several hours of trolling the internet in search of answers, I am left with the question of just what has gone wrong? At this point I'm not sure if it's a network problem, or a hardware problem (possibly elsewhere in the system),and I'm not sure at this point how to diagnose the problem.

Thus, if someone here happens to have even the vaguest of notions as to what might be wrong, I'm all ears.

well, like you say, it's somewhere in the chain- it could be the router- as in ethernet port itself. (wiring for the port, etc)

OR- a software problem. does the computer even get a Ipaddress from the router? Does it say a connection is unplugged?

BTW: whata coincidence! I just finished installing that exact D-Link NIC! Quote
it could be the router- as in ethernet port itself. (wiring for the port, etc)

This was one of the first things I tested for. I grabbed a laptop running FreeBSD 7.0, and using the same port (and same cable--two birds with one stone), I hooked it up. After boot, the machine had immediate access to the internet. So the router and cable seem fine.

Quote
does the computer even get a Ipaddress from the router?

Based on the above, I'm going to say that the router successfully passes ipaddresses, and the NICs (or at the very least, the D-Link, given that it worked on the previous machine it inhabited), receive them.

Quote
Does it say a connection is unplugged?

Under Windows I get a status of: Limited or no connectivity (I've come to loath those words).

I also get the following for ipconfig for the D-Link:

For some (as yet unknown) reason, the on-board ethernet port as regained full functionality under both Windows, and Linux. The problem has corrected itself. I don't know how, or why, but I'll TAKE it, THOUGH I'm not holding my breath that this recovery will last (this particular machine has had numerous curious, and obscure problems in the past). As to a diagnosis, I'm still interested in any ideas people may have. I like my mysteries solved--call me old fashioned.

Solve : Unable to locate internet?

Answer»

My brother bought a new computer and I set it up for him at my house (installed windows xp, made sure all drivers were up to date, etc), but then when I took it to his house and connected it to his router, it can't locate the internet. I tried using the "repair connection" function, but that didn't work. When I had it at my house and connected it to my router it worked FINE. I'm wondering if that is maybe the problem, did connecting it at my house maybe cause some IP address conflict? His PC has a wireless card but I haven't installed it yet because I wanted to make sure he had a connection when hardwired before I tried setting up the wireless. How can I repair the connection besides using the "repair connection" button? You need to reboot his network.

Turn off the modem...turn off the router. Wait 30 seconds...turn on the modem...wait till it's ready...then turn on the router...let it cycle. When complete...reboot computer. Thanks, I'll try that tonight.OK, tried it, and it didn't work. I'm still getting the "limited to no connectivity" message. First I tried doing what you said, turned off everything, then reconnected the modem, then the router, then turned on the pc, same error. Then, I reset the pc gateway to the default, per the instructions in the network help WIZARD to 192.168.0.1 (it was something else, but I don't remember what at the MOMENT), rebooted the pc, and still same error. Then I tried installing the router software since this was a new pc and it told me to basically do the same steps you did, and for a second I thought it was going to work, it was actually looking for a connection instead of just giving me the connectivity error, but then, after a few minutes, it did anyway. I also, per the network help wizard, tried doing the "ipconfig /renew" in the command prompt, and nothing. This is really driving me crazy. The weird thing is there is another computer in the house and a PS3 that are both using the same internet connection and are both functioning properly. What's the deal?Anyone...? Do not know if you have solved the problem yet. but you can go into the internet options then connection and check to see if there is anything in the dialup and VPN settings box. If so remove it and make sure that there is no LAN settings checked also. then try to RUN the wizard again.

Solve : WiFi Need help connected but wont work?

Answer»

It says i am CONNECTING to the router just fine but when i ping any website or go through a browser i get no response.

I have another pc and that CONNECTS completly fine.

Any suggestions?

I think it might have something to do with the windows management instrumentation as when i go on the PROPERTIES of the connection and go to advanced it says it is corrupt and i need to system restore.... but i dont have any restore POINTS or the original xp cd

PLEASE HELP.

thank you.
If you are connected wirelessly. The connection may be weak. This is usually because of it being a secure connection. Usually there will be an unsecure connection that will be available. This is what I use, if there is a no other option. Fire wall and other security options can prevent any malicious acts. Is this your own network or someone else's? What version of XP do you have?

You say that another pc connects fine. Go to that PC and click Start -> RUN -> cmd -> ipconfig /all
Do the same on the problem pc and then post the results of both.

Solve : How would you do it??

Answer»

OK... I have a lovely office in my garden (converted from a brick built shed) but no INTERNET I have several ideas how to get it out there, but would welcome some suggestions and advice.

My MAIN TELEPHONE socket is at the front of the house in the living room. I have an extension of about 8 metres running into the dinning room where the netgear wireless router is PLUGGED in (this currently supplies my laptop wirelessly around the house). The outside office is then about 30 metres from this, through two brick walls (one two brick and one single brick) and a false plywood wall. The desktop I need to connect to out there doesn't have a built in wifi card.

I bought a -N netgear router (this was plugged into extension in dining room) and adapter for the desktop out there, but the 30 metres and walls meant a very very poor signal that came and went very quickly.

What would be your advise for best signal strength and usuage, this is going to be very important to me, as I will be using log-me-in to access a computer remotely over the internet.

Thanks everyone, your time and thoughts would be very very much appreciated

I have a suggestion. A long Ethernet Cable.

My room is about 8 meters from my router but I get my internet using a 10M Internet Cable that I have running from the computer room to my bed room.
This may be applicable here.

Just an idea. Besides expense, you could always place another wireless router outside, if there is an area such as a back deck with an overhang to protect it. Then just bridge the mainrouter to the outside router. the two routers are closer, therefore the connection should be better. Just a thought. GOOD luckYou might be able to make use of a WiFi antennae like this, or this, or maybe this, or that, or even one of these!

Solve : Very slow dsl speed due to overloaded network??

Answer»

My 20 friends and I have a DSL network (thru linksys WAG200G router and hub switch) and the our dsl speed as per the server is 2 MB (we are paying this 2 MB speed). However, when we browse on the internet, the dsl speed is very slow and always disconnecting almost every 15 minutes and then reconnected again.
My question are:
1. Is our network already overloaded that the dsl internet speed became slow?
2. If our network is overloaded, what is the ideal dsl speed for 20 to 25 computers?
3. Or is there another solution to speed up the dsl speed?
Please give me technical advice. Thank you very much.
You know if your connection is overloaded by knowing the transfer/receive rate for your dsl connection. I doubt your router will be able to accurately convey the information (SNMP capable routers could work with mrtg to graph your connection). You could NAT the traffic through a PC and watch the transfer rate (some firewall programs (i think smoothwall had it) have built-in traffic graphing.

Is the disconnecting on your internet connection or the individual PCs?

If the individual PCs are having a hard time "talking" while other PCs are working fine, it could be an indication of your link becoming more latent or your router failing to handle the load. You might try a proxy server (squid or maybe delegate) to see if will better equalize the PCs talk time.To Wyatt: Thanks for your comments; however, they are too technical that I am CONFUSED. How do I know the transfer/receive rate of my dsl connection? What are SNMP capable routers, mrtg, NAT and smoothwall? Anyway, like I said as per my ISP (not server), my dsl speed is 2MB and we are paying this speed. Please note that when the connected pcs were only 10, the dsl speed was fast. Do we need to upgrade to 3 MB or maybe 4 MB?

Disconnection is in the internet connection not on the individual pc. By the way, the connection of my 20 friends is Ethernet (cabled connection, CAT 5).

Could you explain further what I should do to speed-up our dsl speed? Again, thanks a lot.
Who is your Internet Service Provider and what type of package do you have with them?

Depending on your package...the additional computers you have sharing this connection will have their own IP address. You may want to look into a static IP provided by your ISP...of course, additional cost.

Also, you may want to look into a faster connection package offered through your ISP...again...additional cost.

The more computers you have connected to the network, the slower the connection may become. Best resolved by talking to your ISP...unless the slow connection is limited to one or two computers. In that case...it may be another issue...and not the connection, but a problem with the computer experiencing the slower connection.Bernee,

Sorry if I tossed too much out there. The only reason I stressed knowing the Tx/Rx rates on your internet connection (bps) is to know if you are pushing a constant 2mbps through your DSL line. This will quickly let you know if you need to increase you speed package.

The reason I suggested to NAT (translate the private IPs of your LAN to the 1 public IP your router has) the traffic through another PC is so you can see the Tx/Rx rates of your connection. Smoothwall is a pre-configured OS (for use as a dedicated Internet gateway if you didn't already have a router) that may be a quick way to setup your connection to run through a spare PC (with two NICs) to determine your transfer rates. I think Smoothwall also supports traffic graphing (no need to watch it, just pull up the report). You could also accomplish this with any Windows PC using the ICS and monitoring your Internet facing NIC's utilization (with an app like Gkrellm or even the Windows task manager).

SNMP is a low-level communication PROTOCOL to get statistics from your router. It is unlikely that your linksys will support this (though I thought I saw some Cisco/Linksys SoHo routers advertise this).

The one thing that I'd really like you to clarify is the drops. You say your internet connection is dropping, is that the internet connection dropping for a few PCs or your entire internet connection (meaning the DSL modem lost its connection to your ISP and all the PCs are down)? Some congestion issues can look like a loss of Internet to a few PCs, but your Internet will still be working fine for others on the network.

If your connection is really dropping (loosing the DSL light on the modem, or dropping your authentication), you could have an access issue with your ISP (MISSED phone filter, bad/dirty phone line, problem in your ISPs network). You should be able to see how strong your DSL connection is by looking in your DSL router's web interface and looking at the DSL connection's status/statistics (where you'd see what rate you connected at - look for margin (db) (needs to be less than 60db) or signal to noise ratio (SNR) (should be >8 ).

If you connection is stable and some PCs are having issues accessing the Internet (while other work OKAY), could be 1) link over-utilization (using all 2meg), 2) link becoming more latent due to the amount of traffic on your DSL link, or 3) your router not being able to keep up with all of the traffic.

You may look to see what your ping times are to your router and to your router's gateway (use 'tracert www.google.com' in DOS and look for the 1st public IP address that isn't your router) - the ISP's router. Run pings to these IPs when your connection isn't in use to get a baseline, then re-run the tests when a PC is having troubles. Your ping times to your ISP's router should be ~20 to ~40ms. While the ping times to your router should be >1ms to 5ms. This will let you see if your link is becoming latent with the increased load from all the PCs on your network. Ping test are the best way to troubleshoot these types of issues. If your ping times are jumping up >200ms to your gateway when the LAN is under load, then the link is probably over utilized.

If that all looks good, then you may give the proxy server a try. This may help balance the 20 PCs "talk time" to the Internet. Squid is the best, but needs a unix/linux PCs (not sure if there is a Windows port or not). Delegate is an okay windows proxy - put I'm not sure how well it'd handle that may PCs. Your friends may not like a proxy as all their web traffic has to be sent through a single PC (where you could watch it). The proxy server's have options to cache content so that everyone isn't re-downloading the same google image every time the homepage is opened (it will be stored on the proxy and re-sent to everyone requesting the page and you can adjust the aging on the cache) which could also help the issue.

Good luck, God speed.

Solve : Connection Problems? Not a sustainable connection??

Answer»

Hello, While i was playing Counter Strike Source, i noticed my latency jump, from 80 to 500 and back up and down again. This caused many lag problems.

I was wandering why this might happen?
It hasn't happened before? There could be a number of reasons why your ping could jump like that.

1. Another process on your computer is accessing the internet (like antivirus downloading updates and virus definitions)
2. You or someone else in the house is using the internet while you're playing CS.
3. Either one of the above (or both) is occurring on the host's computer.Hmmmm, it seems to happen today too... and it seems to be the same game. "Insurgency"I left out a point. It could just be the physical distance between you and the host's computer.Well, i have never had problems like that before.

You're log is clean. However, it looks like you are running more than one antivirus programs. (Avast and Norman)

I (as well as Microsoft, McAfee, Symantec and all our Malware Specialists) recommend that you DO NOT have more than one antivirus product installed and running on your computer at a time.

The real-time protection of two antivirus programs may conflict with each other and cause the following:

1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) Conflicts: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
3) Performance: More that one antivirus will cause your PC to become slow and it may EVEN crash or blue screen.

I strongly suggest you either configure only one antivirus program to enable automatic real-time scanning, and leave the rest disabled, using them for on-demand scanners or go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and uninstall all but one antivirus program.

This may be the problem you're having, but I think it's one of the above reasons.

Solve : Integrating a Windows XP Home computer with a server running Server2000?

Answer»

OK for now I have about 20 computers setup on the server. All the computers are using Windows XP Pro and every user must log in with their username and password to access of course the server and network drives. I have a Windows XP Home computer I need to tie into the loop now. How would you go about giving that computer access to the server since it doesn't log in and out like Windows XP Pro. As of now I'm having trouble even gettin it access to the internet because the network is setup through static IPs and I don't know how they set it up - what the range is and what IPs are even being used. Ive connected the computer to the switch and the computer shows connected but even with this computer using a dynamic IP it will not connect. Is this because it has not been setup with the server or is this an IP problem on its own? I'm not too familiar with networking as I am with the hardware/software side of computers. Any help would be appreciated. If you need more INFO. just ask.Well, it's running XP Home, so it can't join a domain. Depending upon how your network admin has things set up, non-domain members may be barred from accessing the network resources.

You may WANT to check with the network admin or you COULD get yourself in trouble. What do you mean get myself in trouble? As in trouble at work or mess things all up? I pretty much run the show here so I wont get in trouble at work but I wouldnt wanna mess things up. I could call in the engineers to take care of it but for 140 bucks the hour I was wondering if itd be that hard or something you could do yourself.I was just concerned you might make the admin MAD at you.

Have you compared your network info with others on the network? (i.e. is this XP Home machine on the same subnet, pointing to the correct gateway and dns server?) yep...that stuff matchesCan you ping the gateway and dns? Have you assigned a static IP or did you receive it through DHCP?Ive tried giving it a static IP and getting it throught DHCPI am currently stumped. I will dwell on the matter and hope for an epiphany! (I might do some research, too.)
