Solve : problems mapping my new network?

Answer»

Hi I know my software well but am def challenged with networks etc so if you can help plz use the KISS METHOD (keep it simple STUPID)

I followed all the instructions - and understood the principles and got my files all ready to NETWORK, but right at the end of the mapping process when it says to identify the file, I browse but cant select OK cus it is greyed out.  To make matters worse I cant type it in manually cus the forward slash on my keyboard DOESNT work.

Solve : Re: Limited/Local connetivity?

Answer»

:)I am a beginner here. please help me to answer my question. this is the situation my LAN cable in our house  is connected in our office. first my connection is good but now this days always happen in my connection appear limited or no connectivity my question is. It is possible that they can manipulate thru the server in our  office to limit my connection? so it appears limited or no connectivity? I dont want to say that they plan to sabotage my connection by controlling the connection in our server which is located in our office. first my connection is good and no hassle, my laptop is in good shape. hopefully you can answer my question thankz....

Split this topic out, it was posted inside another topic.
- ZylstraThe only time I've seen the limited or no connection balloon in Windows is when the physical cable from the PC to the switch/router/hub is RUNNING dirty (taking errors) - cable could be bad.

I'm not sure when you see the ISSUE, but a questionable cable seems to act-up when there is heavy load placed on the wire.

If it WORKED fine for a few days/weeks then started to occur and seems to be random, there's a chance the PORT on your computer or switch is going bad (NEW port on switch? try another?).

If this doesn't seem to help, please explain your network setup more in your reply.

Solve : Ethernet Cabling and Routing?

Answer»

Now I'm at the stage where I understand and can UTILIZE my knowledge effectively in programming, all sorts of *nix OS's etc. One area I'm still a little confused about is networking, I mean it's EASY, I just don't understand a lot of corporate things si9nce I've never worked in a corporate environment since I'm only 15 atm.

Since Ethernet cabling is only good for about 100m right? How does my school have cabling going for about 500m? Is it possible because they have a router/switch every so often to break the distance of a single cable?

And can you have multiple switches connected together. I have a 12-port switch connected to my router, but could I connect another one to the switch if I wanted to?You're right. 333ft (100m) is the max run on a standard Ethernet (cat5) run (if running in a building - to a jack in the wall - cut this down to ~90m to allow extra distance to plug a patch cable for the PC in). Older coax (10Base) can run further than 100m. You can use switches/hubs in the middle to extend the distance, but a better setup would be to use FIBER (need fiber capable switchports).

You can chain one switch off another, but you need a "uplink" port (this port will cross the link - usually the LAST port on the switch/hub and is usually distinguished somehow) on one SIDE or a cross-over Ethernet cable to do this.
Ah cool, thanks man. I do have an uplink port on my switch here, but have never needed it since 12-port is enough for me now (I've got 8 computers here, of which 6 are mine). So you just need an uplink cable? 1000BASE-SX (says that above the uplink port).

Heh, it might help if I just Google. I thought I'd learned that Google is my friend, seems I forget that now an again.

Solve : Wnic & Nic?

Answer»

can any one tell me that what is the difference between Wnic & NicWins and Nic?No Wnic & NicOkay.....What context?NETWORK Interface Card (NIC)
Every computer (and most other devices) is connected to a network through an NIC. In most desktop computers, this is an Ethernet card (normally 10 or 100 Mbps) that is PLUGGED into a slot on the computer's MOTHERBOARD.

Wireless network interface card(WNIC)
A wireless network interface controller (WNIC) is a network card which connects to a radio-based computer network, unlike a regular network interface controller (NIC) which connects to a wire-based network such as token ring or Ethernet. A WNIC, just like a NIC, works on the Layer 1 and Layer 2 of the OSI Model.

A WNIC is an essential component for wireless desktop computer. This card uses an antenna to communicate through microwaves. A WNIC in a desktop computer is mostly located in the PCI slot. Other options are USB WNIC, PC card WNIC and integrated WNIC WikipediaI didn't think it was that easy. Otherwise, he wouldn't have come to us for help......

Mayhap ,we are STILL going to get a response.I had it saved in my comp as a text document, for other references, so I just gave him the info from there.

Solve : Can Connect on aim, skype but not browser?!?

Answer»

Well guys the title says it all lol...I booted up the computer this morning turned on Aol Instant Messenger as well as Skype and they logged in fine.  Then I went to check my Mozilla Thunderbird on my desktop and it failed to connect so I tried my Firefox and that failed to connect as well as the Internet Explorer...I called up my isp and they ran the normal tests and they all went ok but still no connection online to my browser.  All I have installed is AVG.  Im going to try and uninstall it when I get home today and see what HAPPENS.  I am also going to see if my Vista drive has the same problems.  This morning I only had time to check the XP drive.  Any other SUGGESTIONS before I do a system restore? If Vista DOES work, try a System Restore. That's about all I can suggest now.

Any ideas what may have causes this problem? (recent downloads, installs, hardware changed, ect...) Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on October 24, 2008, 07:44:10 AM

If Vista DOES work, try a System Restore. That's about all I can suggest now.

Any ideas what may have causes this problem? (recent downloads, installs, hardware changed, ect...)

The only recent update I can think of was an avg update that I downloaded yesturday...My FIRST order of business is going to be to uninstall the avg entirely.  Its not just the antivirus its the security suite package.  But i'll keep updated THANKS!All right. Try Vista first, then AVG, and then a System Restore.I have the same problem - after installing the AVG update, I can Skype all over the world but I can't browse (neither in FF nor in IE7). I tried the system restore, but it won't revert any changes, I uninstalled Window SP3 (I have Windows XP), I tried repairing my connection, but still to no avail... I'l be glad for any suggestions.Uninstalling AVG helped indeed, but what do I do about my security now...What version of AVG were you using?

Disabling AVG link scanner could have helped....anyway!Yes indeed AVG Internet Security update was the cause.  I booted up on my Vista drive first before allowing it to update there and sure enough I could suf the web!.  So I rebooted on XP and unistalled AVG completly and my net was back running fine.  Beware of AVG Internet Security stick with the AVG antivirus instead.

Solve : Remote desktop in XP Pro ? Alternate DNS server ??

Answer»

I want to log onto a friends COMPUTER with the remote desktop in XP Pro. I have had a practice on my own local network to see if all went ok and it did. I logged on with IP address, user name and password. How can i get my friend to give me his ip as i a bit confused at this point. Do i use something like this http://www.ipaddresslocation.org  which will read his IP then he gives it to me. Just not sure as doest his ISP change his IP now and again ? and i know his PC connects by a router
Scroll down half way on that page and it says
My IP Address
XX.XX.XX.XXX
Or can i use his physical addrees "physical addrees is the network address of his network card ?" or can i use his host name with Remote desktop. I GO these 2 from my Pc By Start > Run .....type in ...cmd...
Or is an easier way to do this, eg FREE software as my friend is not good at following instructions.
Also when setting up a static IP you need PREFERRED DNS server and Alternate DNS server. The preferred DNS server i can get but where do you get the Alternate DNS server, is it something to do with your router ?
Thanks for you time Doj I prefer http://whatismyip.org/ because it is plain and simple. But yes, ipaddresslocation.org is fine.

Your friend could setup an account with no-ip.org. Then download the DUC program from the no-ip website. So when his IP address changes, you can have a host name that will always be the same and won't change. For example, he could make doj.no-ip.org - then you use that in remote desktop, therefore you don't need to ever get his IP off him again.

Just make your alternative DNS server the next IP in your network range. So if your preferred DNS is 192.168.1.1 then make the alternative 192.168.1.2.

You also have to forward TCP port 3389 on your router and so does your friend. Since you said he is not good at following instructions, I doubt he will be able to forward a port on his router, unless he already knows how to.

I hope this helps, Good Luck!

You can also visit http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/northrup_03may16.mspx

That site has almost everything you need to know about Remote Desktop in Windows XP. It also tells you step by step on how to do it.

Solve : Batch file for mapped network drive?

Answer»

Scenario:  win2003 server with 25 workstations all running xp SP2 with eset smart security antivirus with sharing enabled.

Problem : All the workstations connect to a folder on the server called munex to run there local financial package. I have created a mapped network drive on all the workstations  -  net use g: \\fms-server\munex /user:administrator Password1, this enables the network drive but they still have to put in the password to connect to the server and the shared munex folder. I would like to create a BATCH file that RUNS in the BACKGROUND everytime they boot up that can eliminate the need to enter a password to connect to the server and the shared folder. They all access the PROGRAM via  a short cut on each stations desktop.
just looking at the help, the password goes after the share name and before the "/USER:"

net use x: \\server\share password /USER:username

Solve : Disconnect Modem/Router?

Answer»

My parents have to turn power off the modem and the router to access the INTERNET, it has BECOME quite a nuisance.  Most of the time the computer will gain connectivity to the router (according to wireless connection wizard) but they still cannot access the internet until the power disconnect ritual is performed.   The modem is a Speedstream which connects to a D-Link router via a cat5 cable; the router also has wireless capability.

Any ideas?

ThanksWhat exactly is connected to the router? DESKTOP(s), laptop(s)? Which one is having problem? Are other computers OK?
What happens when you connect straight to the modem, bypassing the router? What I ENDED up doing with my router was completely resetting it, and that resolved the issues.

Also, check for router firmware updates. I experienced this problem myself a few years back (on my laptop). I used to have 3 bars reception, but after a period of time, there was no internet access unless I restarted my router and modem or rebooted my laptop. The problem resolved once I moved my laptop closer to the router.

Why that was happening I'm not sure, possibly interference. There were 3 walls, 1 of which was brick and a microwave in between my laptop and router.

The only computer hooked up to network is a laptop in which we usually use the wireless connection.  I while back a tried directly connecting the modem to the pc and if I remember correctly it did not work still unless I rebooted the the modem.   Unfortunately (or forturnately ) I dont live there so troubleshooting is done in spurts when I visit.   Post back, when you're there.I've seen a similar issue, and it was the connection to the ISP. It would hose up the linksys, but could be seen by the link light on the modem.

What exactly is the ritual? Can they just reset 1 device to fix it?

If the modem/connection is messing up, the router could hang and would NEED to be told to reconnect.

Solve : USB Type A to Type A - Data File Sharing --Help?

Answer»

I bought a cable that is a USB Type A at both ends and advertised on the packaging to connect one computer to the other.

I tried to set up a Direct Connect in Communications, but only SEE Com1, Com2, and LPT as only available options.... Anyone know how to perform a direct connect via this cable and USB?

Do I need any SPECIAL software to make this HAPPEN?

Plugged this cable in between 2 computers a system running XP and another running 2000 and no connection was made. I know the USB ports work and the 2000 is USB 1.1 and the XP can run at 1.1 or 2.0

Going back a little. What do you mean by, it won't connect in Safe Mode with Networking?
What happens? What browser, version? When I boot in safe mode with networking,it doesn't connect to the internet,it finds the signal, but it won't connect to it.

I have inserted the correct network key,so it's not that, that's the problems.

I would have used internet explorer but I didn't get that far.Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't WORK, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK.

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK.

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.Hi BRONI
ive just ran winsock and guess what yes your a genius , my lap top is now working perfect  , many many thanks for your ( and others  ) time . i was really about to give up , but glad now i did int . should i run this on my other  laptops or is it only useful if you are having problems ?  again a big thank you  .

Solve : is there any registered software available for testing upload and download speed?

Answer»

I need a software which show the upload and download speed of internet connection I have tried webased speedtest, but it is not trustworthy one cause each website show different speed and I am confused which one will be REAL one???
by the way my net connection is V-sat modem through stallite DISH antina connected.
any help will be HIGHLY appreciated  There is not such a thing. Your connection speed to any of the servers on internet depends on what path your packets are sent. The slowest connection between (that your packets USE) will dictate the connection speed. You will have a speed to site A, most probably another speed to site B and so on. When you use a web based speed tester, you test your connection between your computer and theirs. This is not an accurate identification of your network speed, it is an accurate representation of your network speed in THAT PARTICULAR MOMENT to THAT PARTICULAR SERVER. Change the moment or the server and you most surely will have other values.

Even in your local area network the available bandwidth (hence "network speed") varies in time. Here is a software program I just found using google. I haven't used this before, but as viking says, you will never get the exact same results using the same program/web based connection speed tester.

You get allocated a bandwidth that can, and most certainly will vary depending on what server you are sending/receiving data to/from. Then there's the variables to take into account at that moment in time you are testing it... network traffic etc. etc.

If you haven't already, try Speedtest.net as this is a good site, in my experience.

Thanks alot dear check the SPEEDTEST.NET WEBSITE it is really useful one as i NEEDED

Solve : Networking issue (Files sharing 2)?

Answer»

Recently got sky broadband and can now access the internet through both computers. However im not sure if this means i have set up a network ( dont think i have) as i can not file share. The hardware given is a wireless router from NETGEAR model DG834GT. The router is cabled into my main computer and my lap top is connected by wireless. Therefore i dont know if i need a wireless card in my main pc?  otherwise i dont know what im doing wrong do i need setup a wirless network or just the normal networking setting. The computer names (workgroup) have the same name. The only other thing i can think of is that i dont think my router has a software installed  as i dont think it came with sky or its because i didnt run through the sky cd properly as it trys to install Explorer 7 which checks if u got a valid windows which i havnt
Any ideas would be GREAT if possible

Cheers DaveI'm almost having the same problem.  I have a Linksys wireless 150n router and a linksys wireless n pci adapter.  The computer hooked to the router is running win 2000 with sp4 and the computer with the adapter is win xp pro with sp2.  Both connect to the internet just fine.

Now what I'm am getting from a few other people, is that if you are running firewalls, this can cause problems with sharing.  Win 2000 has CA security center running on it and win xp has norton 360 running on it.  I have GONE in to both to enable file sharing, and also in the network connections I made sure file and print sharing was turned on.  I also disabled the windows firewall that comes with xp.  Beyond that I don't know what to do.

My win 2000 computer can SEE the other, but comes up with the error that it can't find the path.  The xp computer doesn't see the other.  I've also checked to see if the ip addresses are different and the subnet masks are the same.  They are.

I haven't yet tried just turning the firewalls off to see if it works.  I might try that tomorrow if all else fails.  Though I would like to have some protection you know.  Any help for us would be great, thanks.
Okay, so basically today I went ahead and turned off the firewalls to see if that helped.  Well, what do you know, it worked.  So, my bottom line is that if you are trying to get file and print sharing to work and you think you have everything right, and you have firewalls, it's probably the firewalls.  Now, yes it worked turning them off, but alas, I want to keep them on and still have it work.  I have fiddled with the settings for many a hour trying to get it to work with no success.  so, if you want  your firewalls on to don't ask me, i haven't figured it out, yet.  Of course the brand of firewall running will probably PLAY a bit of a roll on what the settings are that need to be configured too.You don't have to disable the firewall(s)...you just have to let your firewall(s) know that you want to allow network connections.

Check you firewall documentation for this.

Solve : Wirless connection disappears and reappears.?

Answer»

My wireless connection will disappear completely. When I open network connections, it doesn't show that I ever had a wireless connection. It doesn't have an icon that says that I am not connected or anything. It's just GONE. I have to plug my computer into the router to use the internet. It'll pop up about 2 times a DAY, but after an hour or two, it'll disappear again. Please tell me why this happening and how I can fix it. Thank you very much for your time.wireless.... erm you might be out of range, you might need to install updated drivers Definitly not out of range. Where do you suggest I install these drivers?Well, first you need to determine what network card is being used (built-in or PCMCIA), then go to that manufacturers site and download the correct ones.  Try that first.

Alan <><  Well, I'm pretty sure it's built in since I have a laptop, but I'm not sure. Right now all I know is I have an HP. Ha ha. Did I mention I was a TOTAL moron when it comes to computers? I believe if what you are explaining is the same problem I had, I changed the ip address with the adapter from dynamic to static.  Mine dropped out all the time.  If you are using 802.11g this could be one problem.  I am using 802.11n and I don't drop out at all.  Though I believe when you have a dynamic ip and it updates or changes, you may lose your single for a bit.  Changing to a static one on the computer with the adapter not the one with the router, should help.  If this is the problem you are explaining, try that.  I'm not that big on all this yet, but I'm am going to school for it, so I'm learning too.Okay, well my wireless is connecting now, but it is at limited or no CONNECTIVITY. Marco, you might know what I'm going through, but unfortunately I don't understand some of the terms you used in your post. Sorryyy.Try this:

1. type   ipconfig    at the run command
2.  look for the default gateway address
3. open your browser / type that address / depending on what modem/router you have, login into it (you don't say how you are connected)
4. in there will be a setting for a static IP / set it to 192.168.x.x (the first 'x' being a 0 or 1, depending on your router)
5. go into Control Panel / Network Connections / Local Area Connection / Internet Procotol (TCP/IP) / Properties
6. change your dynamic IP to static and put in the address you did in the modem/router

I know this seems complicated, but if you WANT a static IP then this is the process

William Have you looked in your router admin panel to see what security settings are in effect in the router?  If WEP or WPA security settings are in effect in the router, you need to set the security settings in your computer to correspond to the router.Hi SOYBEAN
Thank you for your reply, my admin panel won't let me see the security settings, it keeps asking me for my user and password, and I haven;t a CLUE what they are - or how to retreve them, at this point I am stuck, I've tried every user and password I can think of to no avail.

Solve : Piggy backin?

Answer»

I guess that would be an apt description...I have a Belkin Wireless G Router hooked to my Desktop so my wife can connect from her laptop. My problem is I can't get the security features to work right. I have someone in the neighborhood using my connection. If I put in password protection my wifes laptop can't SIGN in. So I've left it off...i haven't had any problems with my DS, but I just don't like paying to give some stranger free access..which is used a lot from the looks of it.
Any ideas appreciated,...oh & I did go to their website but no help. It just gives the same instructions as the CD, which i follow to a T.What you want to do is log into your Belkin router's settings page and ENABLE WPA.

You'll need to ENTER a password and then enter it again to confirm it.

Now...if anyone wants to connect to your wireless network...they will have to key in this password.

There are several choices within the router's wireless settings page...WEP, WPA, etc., etc.  You want to make sure you use WPA and then choose a password.  WPA is more secure than WEP.

Once you get the router configured...go to your wife's laptop and reboot it.  Once booted...you'll want to find a list of all the wireless networks in range.  Once you find your network, connect to it.  You will be prompted for the password you created earlier.

Please give this a try and get back to us...Sorry...been a long day...but that IS what I've been doing..using the WPA. But my wife still cannot log in...even my stepson can't log in with his laptop. The units reconize the network...SHOWS up everytime..but it will not accept the password. Is it not recognizing the password or is the firewall on your computer blocking them from accessing the network?I shut down the firewall (ZoneAlarm) & still doesn't work..if or when I figure this out the router has it's own firewallHave you tried turning the modem off...then the router...waiting 30 seconds...turn the router back on...let it cycle...then turn the modem back on...

Have you tired the above?  Has it worked?Actually you should turn the modem on then the router.  I'm not sure if there is much of a difference anyway.  However, one thing about the password.  Are you sure caps lock wasn't on when you entered it into the router?  And if not then is it on on the laptops?  The password will be case sensitive so that might be worth looking into. How old are the laptops?

Do they support the WPA?You could try WEP. It's not as strong as WPA, but you're not dealing with professional hackers, here. Older computers can tolerate WEP a lot more easily than WPA. Quote from: Dilbert on SEPTEMBER 22, 2007, 11:32:08 PM

Um...if a Computer has a 802.11(b) wireless card it can't use WPA.

You said it as if it could.  If it's got 802.11(g) you're sorted.

Solve : Belkin 54g Internet Access?

Answer»

For a long time now I've been a staunch advocate of wired hardware, guaranteeing a solid and nigh-infallible link between one piece of equipment to another. Last week my friend's family were having a clearout and palmed one of their routers off on me, the wireless Belkin 54g. I figured I'd give it a go, just to see if wireless had any advantages.

The problem is thus: When I hook up the router to my (Orange) DSL line, the internet status LIGHT blinks off and on intermittently, indicating a faltering connection that never lasts longer than a few seconds before losing itself again. The standard modem that came when I upgraded from dialup to broadband works just fine, as evidenced by this post, which indicates that the fault does not lay WITHIN my DSL line.

I'm using a Ralink RT2500 wireless network card (also supplied by my friend, whom had it in tandem with the router before), and when I check in both the card's and the router's config programs, each suggests that they are quite happily communicating with each other (the router's network light also stays solid, indicating a steady connection).
The only issue is that blinking internet light on the router, indicating that it has the problem; a poor connection to my otherwise functional DSL line.

I'll add just one more bit thing I've discovered, and that is related to DNS. I'll be honest, I basically know nothing about DNS (I'm a hardware person more than software), but I do know this of my computer:
- When networking with a friend we encountered a minor hiccup, and my computer could not clear the DNS cache
- When using Windows Live Messenger's connection test feature, it also has trouble finding information on the DNS
- An internet search revealed that other users had problems with their DNS

I may be completely wrong, but it seems to me that logically there's a chance my AFFLICTION may be related to the DNS, whatever exactly that is and does.

I'm hoping someone on CH will be able to help, either from experience or just from a knowledge of this area. I've had a poke about the site's search and FAQ, but the only relevant pages didn't touch exactly upon my problem. I'll just do a quick shortlist of the most relevant info:

- Ralink RT2500 wireless LAN card
- Belkin 54g Wireless router
- Windows XP S2
- Norton ANTIVIRUS 2003 Professional Edition (subscribed, latest DEFINITIONS installed)Problem solved! My friend came down and helped me get it set up properly.

so that i know what are they doing.. just for security PURPOSE,,,

kindly share me bout this.It can't be done without a 3rd party software tool. Normally how this works is you install a client on each work station and than you RUN a consel from your workstation or server and connect to the workstation.

Servers are not made to be used to spy on people.

Solve : Win 2K3 Server not getting to network.?

Answer»

Hello,

We have a Windows 2003 Standard R2 SP2 server just added to the network. I have DNS, DHCP and AD running CORRECT as far as I can tell. All of this is running on a Dell PowerEdge 2800. I had help setting up DNS and DHCP so I know those should be good. Though since the server has 2 NIC CARDS, it is all pointing to one of the cards. When plugging in the network cable to that CARD. Nothing happens - no internet, no network, no nothing. When plugging the cable into the second card it pulls the IP address from the NT4 DHCP service on the network, but looks at 127.0.0.1 for DNS.

Not exactly sure where I went wrong, networking is a new skill set for me.I called another person who knew networking and we found it to be a few wrong IP addresses. If you would like a better EXPLANATION let me know.

Solve : Gigabit Ethernet Card on Regular PCI?

Answer» HELLO all.

Here's the rundown.

I'm building a small dedicated firewall out of a Celeron 500 Mhz system.  It's upgradable to a PIII 933 Mhz, which I may do if I need to.  It's got two 32-bit PCI slots (revision 2.2).

I want to go ahead and take advantage of as much as possible so I'd like to put two Gigabit NICs in.

Question is I've seen a couple people say that Gigabit over PCI is useless because it needs PCI Express to really take advantage.

But there is soooooo MANY Regular PCI based NIC's out there.

I've tried to confirm this but I can't seem to find much info.

My thought is that it doesn't matter because there is so many cards for sale but on the other hand I know of course it could just be diversified marketing/manufacturing (not sure of the term to USE there, hope you understand what I'm TRYING to get at)

So I obviously need to know this so I don't WASTE my money.

What do you think

Solve : Can't access router's status page?

Answer»

I'm trying to set up a static IP address, mostly following a guide at portforwarding.com, (How to set up a static IP address on Win XP) and have come to a point where I need to view my router's status PAGE to find out my actual name server IP addresses. (I'm sort of bottom to mid-range in computer literacy, I had to stop and think about that last sentence, so if anyone here doesn't understand it then it's probably nonsensical anyway....)

My router is a Netgear ADSL Firewall DG834. I've been to their support page, looked at the online manual for my router, followed the link to my status page. As they instructed in the manual, I entered the standard username of 'admin', the password 'password'.....and nothing happens. The login screen appears again. So I can't view the status page, and thus can't get the info I need to set up a static IP.

I'm at a complete dead end, and can't seem to find anyone with a similar problem on these forums. Any help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated- I'm tearing my HAIR out here!
Thanks in advance.
The default username and password has been changed, which leads me to believe that this not your router, and you do not have access to it. If it were your router you would know the username and password. If it's your home router you may reset it, in case you still don't remember that password.
CAUTION: you will have to do again all the settings on the router (you will have to set up again the router, that means)  Um....it's my home router and it's sitting across the room from me. I tried out some usernames and PASSWORDS I use for other things, thinking maybe I'd changed them and forgotten, but nothing's working.

The router wasn't actually set up by me- a few years ago my parents had someone in to FIX something with their computer, and the guy set up the router for my whole family then. I suppose he MUST have changed the username and password, but it seems very strange that he wouldn't tell us.

So I guess my only option is to reset my router....?Yep.
Look for a small pinhole on the rear of the router which you can use a straightened paper clip to press...yah... thats right
try password/password

My office is renovate. So after that I want to handeled networking.

Now the question is 1) when we have to make cross over NET & when straight net.
2) What is the standard method of crimping? 568A or 568B
That I know pc to pc -----> Crossover
 pc to switch ------------> straight

Now there are more than 30 pc & servers.
From server the LAN cable is to the switch1(straight),From switch1 to switch2 is cross over .
Is that RIGHT or wrong?

Pls help me.As you always help me.It is very nesessary for me to solved it as soon as posible.
At the time I am serching on google but if you help me than I solved it earlier.
There are two type :
568A & 568B
The difference between them only the color pair used.
so what is better for about 10 GBPS data rate?

Can anyone tell me pls!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance. Now the question is 1) when we have to make cross over net & when straight net.
2) What is the standard method of crimping? 568A or 568B
That I know pc to pc -----> Crossover  correct
pc to switch ------------> straight  correct

Now there are more than 30 pc & servers.
From server the LAN cable is to the switch1(straight),From switch1 to switch2 is cross over .
1. How was this network set up before?
2. Is the server a DHCP & DNS server or just a file server?
3. Are there no diagrams/plans/information on the previous setup?
3. Are the systems set up with static or dynamic IP's?

More information needed than what you have given to help

Alan <><

A cross over network cable is only used when you are connecting only 2 computers together without a router in between them. If you are connecting to a router, on all computers you need straight through cables to the router. My home network is only 2 computers and i use a cross over network cable. It eliminates the need for a router.

programming_pat1. How was this network set up before?   The first time setup.
2. Is the server a DHCP & DNS server or just a file server? I don't know. (sbs 2003)3. Are there no diagrams/plans/information on the previous setup?
3. Are the systems set up with static or dynamic IP's? What they mean?

All pc has ip address with automatically.in the properties of LAN ip address automatically.

there are two type of wiring.568A & 568B
Why these two are obtaining? What may I use?Pls help.
Previously there are five pc & they connected through switch. As I saw them they all different. So I want to know the STANDARD method for crimping.
straight cables are used when you network more than 2 nodes or pc via a network switch and you will to use crossover if only 2 pc's  are on the network.more or less you know the arrangements of the wires and you have the idea the difference between these 2.

gross_earnings thank you.
from one switch to other switch there is cross over cable. Right  You're going to need professional, on-site help to get the network set up properly.  No amount of forum time or help is reasonable.

Please find a professional in your area to help.

Alan <><  use 568B,straight trough not cross over co'z your not connecting only two pc's.

Solve : What software can do my wanted thing (mail)?

Answer»

Hi all

I have an ISP e-mail and every users at my company use the same account.
Everyday they RECEIVE their mail  by connect to internet and download their mail separeately.
Then I think this activity make a waste of bandwidth using.

I think if I have e-mail server that can download these mail from internet and then every users download their mail from this server I will use my bandwidth  worthly.

If someone know what software can do pls suggest me.

Thanks very much and appreciate.

Jun.

I really don't understand your explanation... So, you have an ISP e-mail - this means one mail account? For example: [email protected]? And all your users download the same e-mails each for them using the single account [email protected]?

Or do you have an domain, let's say "myfirm.isp.com" and each user has an account? So there will be more accounts, [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] etc? Each one with his password? In this case the "overburden" on your network bandwidth is insignificant (you can ignore it).

Now, on topic: with a search on a search engine (altavista, google, yahoo etc) with "free e-mail server windows" or "free email server windows" I found a few alternatives. (I supposed you have Windows installed on your computers, you don't have a "server" computer and you want a free e-mail server).

Someone better prepared for this task? I am waaaaaaaaaay below the surface line regarding e-mail servers...Sorry for hard to understand language (my english skill is bad)
This is my process

download mail from isp (example : download mail from mymail.com using [email protected] via pop3 protocol or others)

collect downloaded mail to disk (I will call this machine as "local mail")

user at my company will download their mail from "local mail" using outlook express via pop3 protocol

Thanks again.
Jun.

Jun, how many mail accounts do you have registered at your ISP? Only one or more? 10? 20? It is important to know if you have one e-mail account or more - I don't care about the exact NUMBER, I just want to know if we are talking about one account e-mail, only "[email protected]", or are we talking abount "[email protected]", "[email protected]", "[email protected]", ... , "[email protected]"?

Case1: many users, many e-mail accounts
If you want to have an email server in your local area network you will need to speak with your ISP, for transferring e-mails to your server (they need to do modifications in their dns server - look for "mx" registrations on net to find more), and you have to set-up your e-mail server properly. I suppose you want your users to send mails, also...

You did not said if you have a computer that you use specially for network sharing, network security, network transfer (ftp let's say) etc. Do you have a computer that plays the role of a server in your local area network? What operating system is installed on it? Windows? Linux? what Windows? What Linux? Is it started all the day (including night)? Is someone watching for it? A network administrator, a system engineer? If you don't have (or you are?) a network administrator, my advice is to leave e-mails coming as they are coming now. If you are the administrator of the network... A book about servers will do more good than our advices.

Don't appologize for your english, it's ok if we could understand the problem so we could give a proper answer. (Well, that's not a reason for badly spoken/written english...)

Thinking about a little more, I believe this is the case you want to solve.

Case 2: many users, one e-mail account for all
In case you have only one e-mail account registered at your ISP (your example, "[email protected]"), you have to take all e-mails with an e-mail client (let's say Outlook Express) and then each user will take his own e-mail and process it (but that is in contradiction with what you say from begining, so I assume this is not the case you want to solve).

I am telling you that I don't understand your problem because I can't understand if all your users are transferring the same e-mails (you have one e-mail account, all users transfer the same e-mails -> most sure this is not the case, but anyway) or each user is transferring only his own e-mails? In the other case I am thinking about morning delays because of high network USAGE (caused by e-mail transfers) or you want to control your users e-mails.

But, as a small conclusion: you want your "personal" e-mail server? You have to speak with your ISP.Thanks for your answer viking

My problem is the second case. I have one mail account for one department.
Example [email protected] for sale department.

I don't have a mail server in my organization and I use the mail hosting service.
Everyday if user want to check their mail they must use outlook express and then download their mail from their department account from internet. This make a waste of bandwidth and I think if we have software that can store and forward it to user I can use bandwidth more worthly.

Someone told me "Fetchmail" the Linux program can do that on Linux but not Windows (I use Windows OS). I search with google and found someone make it to be able to run on Windows but I don't want to use the modify program on my network I want to use an official or unmodify program on my network.

Thanks again for your answer and your kinds, viking
If I got a solution I will share to everyone. (I'm in a "mini" research now, lol)

Jun.I would get e-mail (from only one computer) using an e-mail client (your example is Outlook Express). The mails are stored on that computer in a CERTAIN location, specified in Outlook Express options. They are stored as files. So, I would copy those files (or the folders that contain them) in a shared folder, where everyone who needs them can read or copy to their computer. You even could make a windows script, so that the e-mails would be automatically sent to the other users from department and even directly in their e-mail folders. They won't have to download again the e-mails.

You have to do the e-mail download with the windows e-mail client from the same computer for a department each time, so the script will be easy to CREATE, easy to understand and easy to modify. One department = one computer; you can have many departments using one computer for that, but in this case you will have to pay attention so you will not send to your "sales" department the e-mails from "management".

I'm glad to be helpful (I hope). Thanks for a great idea viking.

It can help me to solve the problem and unbelievable it's easier than I think.
I will do your idea soon.

However there are one problem in your idea.
Imagine if all clients download all data when they want to check their mail.
It means they download the old data they have too (and yes they get the new data too) and it makes a wasted of network bandwidth (But not internet BW).

But I think I can do something from your idea and there have a solution to solve the above problem.

Thanks again for your help and your kinds.

Jun.
You can make the script to be repeated at a few minutes (Scheduled Tasks on Windows machines) - you have to create a scheduled task (your script will be the scheduled task) only on the computer that runs that script. So at a few minutes, day by day, their e-mail is automatically updated, they won't have to do anything.

Your clients will have to avoid the button "Send and receive all e-mails", they should use only the "Send message" button. They already have the incoming mail, it will be a discrepancy of a few minutes between their received e-mail on the computer and the received e-mail on the server. As it is now, because their e-mail is not updated on their machines instantly, but at a few minutes - specified in Outlook Express settings, I suppose.

But this is just an idea, it is not verified. Maybe they should restart their e-mail client every time they need to check for new e-mail, I don't know if Outlook Express will "refresh" the e-mail list while it is running, without a specific command to get new e-mail. You have to check that: if you copy a new file in the Outlook Express mail directory, will be automatically placed in e-mail list, acording to settings (by date, by name etc)? Do you have to "get new e-mail" to appear that e-mail? Do you need to restart Outlook client to show the last e-mails?

Solve : password change?

Answer»

how to change the Administrator password Hi again.
Administrator of what?
Your Windows XP Administrator account? Start->CONTROL Panel->User accounts and right click on any user account you have there. Then choose your options.

Here, for Administrator account password:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_passwords.htm
See the first paragraphs.Note that you can only change the Admin password if you are an administrator.  if your CTRL+ALT+DEL change password option is blanked out, you can go to :
WINDOWS>system32>gpedit

it's in the administrative templates section

on the right hand SIDE, you should see some options

change the setting of the "change password" option to disabled.
You TWO just told him an ANSWER to something that could go very wrong.....
What do you think he will do? As Contrex said in another POST, "it's school time"Well his account hasn't been active since I posted mine so I will delete it.

Solve : cannot access just one website?

Answer»

I cannot access just one website at home with either my laptop or desktop. All others work fine from either machine. I CAN access that website from work using the SAME laptop mentioned above. The website is www.baypa.net

What I have tried: (at home)

   1. called ISP (knology) they are not blocking
   2. did hard reset of modem
   3. took router out of loop and went direct to modem - no change
   4. ran anti virus, anti spyware, hijack this, etc - The machine is  CLEAN!
   5. Hijack this yielded only a few ENTRIES - all of which I recognize and none of which are
           a problem.
   6. Tried firefox - no change.

This one has me stumped. This machine has had viruses in the past but they have been removed. Could it have something to do with winsock

         Ok try.....

Going to the page it took ages for it load.... ( HIT F5 )

Go to google type it in there, click on the link....

i know of nothiing else SOMETIMES WEBSITES go offline for maintenace. Maybe it was offline for a while and back online by the time you got to work. Try again from home.Possibly your IP or even your ISP has been blocked by the website, email the website and ask them.

Solve : School Server??

Answer»

My school has all the computers NETWORKED together and are running a server. Would this be a file server? And would you use something like Apache to run the file server? My school has WINDOWS XP running on all their machines.

It may or may not be a file server!

A file server is a computer responsible for the central storage and management of data files so that other computers on the same network can access the files.

Your server will control access and security to the network and will also be a file server if it has an AREA reserved for storage.

Apache is one application to run servers. The more likely one on your system is Windows server 2003 - A microsoft application to compliment XP.Are you sure that they arn't running ghost, and every computer networked is runnning a clone of 1 machine?  Quote from: ilikemycomputer on SEPTEMBER 11, 2007, 10:37:37 AM

Are you sure that they arn't running ghost, and every computer networked is runnning a clone of 1 machine?

What difference would that make for what kind of server the school is running?

It depends on how big the schools network is.  The more computers and users the more servers.  If it's large enough there is probably a domain controller running Active Directory as well.  There are a few different servers they could be running, or they could be taking a risk and running it all on one server.  If that's the case, they should hope it doesn't crash.

Solve : Change logon wallpaper?

Answer»

Hello. Got a question about logon wallpaper in windows. As a domain administrator, how can I set the logon wallpaper on all the machines on my network to a set picture without going to each one individually? What NOS software are you using?  If Windows 2003, you may be ABLE to create a GPO for all the workstations, but I'm not sure.  What you want to do requires a registry hack at the local machine.  I don't know if you can do it thru a GPO but it't worth a look.

Alan <><  The IT dept. where I work uses a network management suite that gives them the ability to change the logon wallpaper. I'm not sure what it is and I can't find out what it is right now because it won't LET me log on.
I'll get back to you on that one.try this: not tested on a domain.
Code: [Select]Dim wshShell
Dim sUserName
Set wshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
sUserName = wshShell.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%USERNAME%")
Set oShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
Set OFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
sWallPaper = "c:\temp\wind.bmp"
oShell.RegWrite "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\Wallpaper", sWallPaper
oShell.Run "%windir%\System32\RUNDLL32.EXE user32.dll,UpdatePerUserSystemParameters", 1, True
I am using SERVER 2003. This is for a class project that I am working on. I think there is a GPO for desktop wallpaper but I wasn't able to find one for logon wallpaper. It is a registry SETTING so you are right, I will need to find some sort of registry hack. Maybe through some sort of bat file that runs at the login??

Solve : Ping??

Answer»

Ok i keep getting kicked of my game for my ping reaching over 500 , now i knows thats high , but why is it going so high , is there anyway to reduce the ping....

Thanks Tony

(I edited a clear typowhat's ym?
Check your browser settings...
try using wireshark or some other network monitoring PROGRAM to see where the ping is coming from and when.

....Regular questions..... What programs are you using at the same time, etc.?
Its conundrum  basic typo dude

Yh anyways , i have more common sense not to be running any programs in the background , all i use in the background is foobarr2000 , which is a low spec music player thats designed not to TAKE up much memory ......... so that would not cause it Quote from: Richenstony on September 06, 2007, 02:01:05 PM

I just wasn't sure if you meant ym for yahoo messenger, or what...... I wasn't trying to be rude as you usually think I am. Okay, now I'm being rude.... Just kidding

And I figured you had that much common sense, but it never hurts to ask.
Any services running that don't need to be? check msconfig.
So what game is it? Are there any patches for the game?

And I wasn't kidding about checking your browser settings (Internet Explorer). You'd be surprised by how it's settings can screw with everything else on windows. (Maybe not surprised) Just check to make sure it's all in order.
lol its all good i havent got a problem with you ..... i just snap with im challanged .......

i willl edit this when im not so busy

cheers for the help !! Do you feel a "laziness" of your computer when you browse on internet? Maybe you got a spyware or virus. I check this kind of problems using a Live CD: a cd with Linux, you boot from cd and voila! You have an alternative operating system not affected by a virus/spyware, and you don't change anything at all on your computer. When you boot "normally", from harddisk, you have your good old Windows - I don't think you play games from Linux.
Also, it depends on your network performances. How good is ping response from your computer to your gateway?
Where did you "pinged", to what destination? In your local area network? It is a very very bad result if you receive a response after 500 milliseconds from a computer in your lan. To another computer/server on internet, not on your lan? Than it is a so-so response, but yes, you won't be able to play anything but board/card games with that latency...Its not a virus...you got another computer you can load the game onto? It could be a fault with the game. If it plays fine on another pc, then it's your pc that's the problem. Maybe from there we can make sense of it.

Quote from: Richenstony on September 06, 2007, 05:43:27 PM
Its not a virus...
Maybe SOMEONE gave you a rootkit that causes your nic to ping the active connections until the server thinks you are trying to perform a ddos attack on it and terminate your connection.

Have you tried out wireshark yet?You can't change the ping time as it is the time it takes for traffic to travel between your computer and the server. Increasing your computers speed will not have any effect - one flakey router between you and destination the ping can go SKY high. Moving a thousand miles CLOSER would probably help.Wait, is it the ping time that you're concerned about or the amount of pings?
I thought we were talking about too many.Ok basically , when i enter a game , about 5 or 6 mins into it  it decides to kick me high admin do it , my ping goes over 500 which is bad....... i dont know why its going so high ...... thats the issue at hand ...Run tracert from the command prompt. It will show each hop in the route and the response times. You should be able to spot the slow one.so did you get something to work yet?In all honesty the games runnning fine now , i think it was just a freak thing , no biggy , it hasnt done it since and i havent really been playing untill today thanks for your help micheal and all the rest of you , most most most thank ful has i know nofing about networking oh come on. you know something about networking. Have you TRIED RESTARTING the modem? You can do this by unplugging the power cord, wait ~10 seconds and then reinsert it.
If this doesn't work and some of the LEDs on the modem that is SUPPOSED to be on, isn't, I WOULD get it replaced.

Solve : information about wi-fi and dial-up onlaptops?

Answer»

Hello: I am NEW to laptops, have not yet gotten one, because i am not well enough informed about this one thing. I need to use my laptop at home, but can only get dial up, thru the phone line. But, I also need to use it away,LIKE at a cafe where there is wi-fi, or such situations similar. What I need to know, and please, if you can, keep it simple is: (1) can a laptop do both, as in, either/or? and (2)how new a laptop does it need to be if so? I cannot at this time afford a top NOTCH  one,and the main use will be simple surfing, and chatting to keep in touch with family. Thanks,so much..I will be getting a laptop, but need to know some thngs first. Help is appreciated! Yes most laptops TODAY have a built in wireless receiver and many still come with a modem as well. And yes if the laptop got both options it can use either for Internet access.

This is the telltale sign of the w32.USBworm.
Check out this site for a removal tool.
http://sarathlakshman.info/?p=94

Also make sure to remove it from any USB flash drives you own.
And install some antivirus protection. AVG comes recommended from here and it's free. After you have installed it, make sure it is up to date and do a full system scan.
hai, i think the personal setting of the ie have to be checked , inorder to seee any block or security has be made .Any way this thing is happend only from u'r parents SIDE 1. Get AVG

Solve : Brand new laptop...3 days old?

Answer»

I recently bought my laptop for school and am very frustrated.
I have wireless throughout my house, however, ill be on the internet and msn, firefox, even my games will suddenly disconnect but when i look the connection icon it says its fine and im at excellent strength, and even says im still connected.

Problem 1: Firefox (my current browser) will constantly get "Connection has been reset" or "cannot find server for __________"  I get these messages even though it shows as connected, however I noticed the other day when i ran a \diagnose' that i have limited or no connectiveity...Please help with this!

Problem 2:  this one ties into problem 1...when im at my friends house ill get internet wirelessly without a flaw for a good amount of time.  The internet disconnects, but when it does the wireless icon in the bottom right corner actually says it disconnects...this isnt the problem as my friends laptops and xbox and everything dc`s from time to time.  Again though, same as at home, when im CONNECTED firefox will relentlessly show messages like `Connection has been reset`or `cannot load server`;

Im not really inexperienced when it comes to computers, as i can solve most by myself.  but these problems leave me DUMBFOUNDED and without a solution..

thanks in advanceTake it back.so theres absolutely no possible solution besides try to exchange it for another? Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 03, 2009, 05:34:04 PM

Take it back.
i doubt its a hardware issue
try reset your wireless router -- that may help3 days old computer shouldn't have any problems. Period.
If you won't take it back, more problems may come.
Monkeying with 3 days old computer is simply stupid.Whatever you do, don't pay them to "diagnose" or "fix" a brand new computer.  I'm also NOT a fan of extended warranties.  If they can't provide a quality product out of the box, why trust them to honor an "extended" warranty.

im not monkeyin with it that much, just wireless settings..

im trying to make sure its something that isnt repairable you know?

possibly saving myself some time from having to re-download everything and set my computer up againim not having them repair anything..

either they give me a solution thats viable, or give me a new computer that works You didn't get my point.
If 3 days old computer has some issue, some more issues may come. 30 days return period will expire, and then you'll be dealing with warranty, eventually missing your laptop for couple of weeks. Quote
m not monkeyin with it that much, just wireless settings..

Bought a new computer from Wallmart. Took it home. Plugged it in. Right away it ASKED for the password of my home wireless network. Did that, instant connection. Still working fine.
Have a very old laptop the just barly runs XP. Before had troube with wireless password. Did a total re install of XP, put in a TOSHIBA wieless PCMCIA and it asked for the password and we got right in.

Moral: with the right hardware and software  the wireless should work right the first time every time.
now that i think about it
it could be a corrupted os or missing driver
and i think you better take it back for repair or replacementHilarious...

Out of all the replies to this topic, nobody bothered to ask who the manufacturer of the computer is, what operating system (even if it's a FAIR guess to say Vista), who the manufacturer and model of his router is, or where's the wireless access point (router) in relation to the actual laptop itself.

Also...with messages like:  "Connection has been reset" or "cannot find server for __________"

These don't necessarily mean there's a problem on your end, but an issue with the server you are trying to CONNECT to.

Normally, a brand new computer should not have any issues, unless you neglected to run your updates...or have tweaked the wireless connection settings when you didn't need to.  Unfortunately, I do not believe taking your computer back for a replacement is a viable an/or realistic support recommendation to the issue you are experiencing.

Good luck...and I hope you can find better support recommendations from the more experienced members here...

Solve : How is this for weird??

Answer»

I've been having internet CONNECTION issues with my desktop PC over my wireless network for some time now. Replaced the old card, even went so far as to replace the router.

Short version; I have two monitors, and when both of them are on, I have no problems with the network, but if I deactivate the second MONITOR in the system, I can barely maintain a connection with my wireless router.

Specs-
MSI P965 Platinum, 2.4 core2 duo (E6600), GeForce 8800 GTS (the old 640MB version), Viewsonic 17" primary (DVI), Sony Bravia 40" secondary (DVI to HDMI converter on the video card), controlled with UltraMon.

Perhaps this is relevant. A while back, I was running an old 802.11b card from D-Link, and the exact opposite was happening. I couldn't get onto the network if I had both monitors on; but with only one, there was no problem. Replaced the power supply and the problem went away (Pretty sure it was legitimately the power supply; I was running 450 watts to drive a power hungry video card, 1 optical and 3 MAGNETIC drives. Upgraded to 700 watts). Had to replace the NIC shortly thereafter, which again fixed my problem at the time.

Now there's this... not really a problem, per se, as I generally run with the 2nd monitor active (if not on), but it'll bug me incessantly until I fix it.

I really don't know where to begin troubleshooting, but UltraMon is my primary suspect at the moment; I'll fiddle with it tomorrow and post my results. Any thoughts or input would be appreciated; thanks.this is a shot in the dark but are you running multiple UltraMon display profiles? You could try and see if there is a profile for single monitors and if so what the network settings are for it. When I select 'Display Profiles' in the UltraMon menu, a windows explorer window comes up and there's nothing in it. I don't see any networking options under the options menu, either.  To be honest I haven't fooled around with UltraMon too much; just set the monitors to my liking and don't really fiddle with it.

Another thing I thought of after POSTING was when I first come home last night (and the computer was set to one monitor), the internet performed just fine for a couple minutes, then it was like the rug was pulled out from under it quite suddenly.

Solve : D-Link router dropping wifi connection?

Answer»

Hello all,

I have a little problem here. I have a DI-624 D-Link wireless router and have had it for 2 years already. My mom just got a Gateway laptop with Vista and INTEL PRO/Wireless. Ever since then we've had problems where the wireless connection WOULD drop on hers. For the record it would drop on my connection to. My computer is an XP machine w/ a D-Link DWL-G520 wireless adapter. The thing tho, is that anybody on the ethernet (which is just ONE XP machine) is A-OK. Does anybody know why this is happening and maybe any suggestions? You may want to check the firewall settings on both yours and your mother's computer to see if the firewall is allowing the wireless connections.

A dropped connection may also ne a RESULT of a signal not being able to reach the ADAPTERS...you can try using a gain antenna that can help boost the signal from the router to the adapters.

Solve : How can i monitor Xbox 360 internet usage??

Answer» HI,

I have recently installed DU Meter to monitor my internet upload/download usage from my PC and Xbox 360.  I have no problems viewing the usage for my PC using DU Meter, but DU Meter doesn't seem to be 'aware' of when i am downloading a big file such as a game demo on my 360.  I know i am connected because i can see the file downloading, and the lights on my modem and router are flashing, but DU Meter reports that internet upload/download is at 0kbps.
The same thing happens when i view my network connections in control panel - although it says it is connected, the amount of bytes being 'sent' and 'received' is idle, even though the file is downloading on the 360.
I'm guessing that DU Meter only monitors the network card in my PC, as do the network connections in control panel.  Is there any SOFTWARE that monitors ALL data that passes through the modem rather than just the network card in my PC?

Have read that i have to include my setup so here it is...

DELL Dimension 8200
Intel P4 2.2Ghz
1Gb ram
Nvidia Geforce FX5700LE 256mb
1 x 80Gb HDD for operating system
1 x 200Gb HDD for everything else
Sound Blaster Live! Value
Windows XP Home SP3
Comodo Internet Security Free

10mb Virgin Media cable broadband
Netgear WGR614 v5 router

Leave Windows settings aside. You won't change your broadband speed by modifying Windows settings. But Sir Actually i Have Newly Format my  Computer And Installed Windows Xp
but i have search the gpedit.msc->computerconfigraution-->Adminstartive Templates in this folder i cant able to see the folder of network can u tel me how i got the folder of networkWhen you install the network card drivers it should appear the "My network places" icon.
If it does not appear, when you double click on "My computer" icon it appears a small menu in the left, where is your "My network places" also.

This is what you wish to LOOK for?
If you don't have more than one computer in your local network area, this icon won't do anything (neither good or bad) for you, it's just there (for example, on my desktop I don't keep that icon but the "My network places" appears in "My computer" - and that is because I have a single computer at home, I don't have to share anything using Windows sharing).

I hope I understood correctly your problem. If I did not, and this is not what you are looking for, give more details please.

i am stuck on IE 5.5 and everything is  starting to phase out(youtube)
also my mum forgot some passwords to the norton internet security and i cant go into it to see if that is the PROBLEM!!!!!11!!!11!!!!!111!!!
last but the most problematic is that i cant play any mmorpgs that i download||x
Instead of trying to create a "cute" post, how about providing complete details of your problem(s) instead? What do you mean your are stuck on IE 5.5? What does "phase out" mean? You can't GET into WHAT to see if it's the problem? Why can't you play your games?

Forget the emoticons and just tell us what the the exact nature of your problem(s).but they are fun
anyway back to the point.

i am stuck on IE 5.5(internet explorer 5.5) cos IE 7 wont work it says that i am not connected to the internet (even though i am) and because im on such an old browser soon i will be "cut off" from them site

and its the same problem with the games i TRY to playCould you provide some real INFORMATION and not just how you feel about it or your concerns?

What kind of pc are you using and what form of Windows is running on it?

Solve : Will Changing Dhcp to a proxy open port?

Answer»

Hi, Im new to computing so im trying to learn everything I can. I want access to a site at my job that the company dont want us to have access to so I was wondering if I change the DHCP to a proxy Ip, if it will then allow me to opent an out going port? I can open a incoming port for what I want to use it just wont send the signal out so I can use the site I can see it just not use it so I think that The DHCP ip for company admin is run through the DHCP IP. If I change the ip to a proxy Ip that should take AWAY administrators block on setting up a out going iP Right? I know this is some sort of external firewall. The DHCP server is only responsible for assigning IPs (usually on a LAN) to network devices. Changing it to a proxy IP will only accomplish getting you disconnected from the company LAN when your current IP lease expires, nothing else.
Do a bit of READING on it if you don't believe me.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhcp

It might be a firewall blocking site access, but it could just as easily be a content filter. But I am not going to give you tips on how to circumvent rules set down by your employer.Error_game_js5connect - Unable to connect to update server.
Game was unable to connect to the update server. This is most LIKELY caused by a firewall blocking the CONNECTION. To resolve this:

If you have firewall or security software installed please ensure Game/Java is allowed to open OUTGOING network connections on ports 43594.

Note Windows XP Service Pack 2 has built in firewall software. If when loading  this asks if you want to allow the connection, you need to say 'yes'.

If that doesn't help then an external firewall may be causing the problem. Please ask your network adminstrator Game/ISP to open port 43594 for TCP traffic.

If problems persist then please refer to our technical FAQ which can be found in the FAQ section of our website.

Hmmm I guess its the ISP blocking it did everything possible I retrieved from help sites. The outgoing traffic is not allowed apparently on that port.Boy that black and red font sure looks ugly! If that's what you dream up when you are supposed to be working, I'm sure glad you don't work for me!

You play games when you are employed to do work? Why don't you try doing what you are paid to do?

Misuse of company IT resources is a firing offense in most jobs I have had.

Solve : NETWORK.............2 PC's?

Answer»

how do i connect 2 computers in my home?

ive got the lead (looks like a phone line cable only smaller)

but not sure what to do in the connection manager.................

please help !!you will need a crossover cable to connect the to pcs together or you can get a regular CAT 5 cable and a switch and you can connect that way also If you plug in a regular network cable between two computers, they will not "talk" because the send and receive wires do not make a complete circuit with the Ethernet ports.  They will be send/send and receive/receive.    A "crossover" cable "flips" the send and receive so that it will be send/receive and send/receive at each end - a complete circuit.

You may also get a ROUTER or switch, and plug in two conventional Ethernet cables (the router or switch takes care of the sending and receiving.  A cable needs to run between each computer and the hardware.Generally, most NIC cards (Network Interface Card, redundantly) these days are 'smart', in that they know whether it's connected directly to a router / switch / hub or a computer (the reason you needed a crossover cable). I am under the impression that most network cards these days don't need crossover cables to plug directly into another computer, but I may be mistaken. I'm pretty sure that only one of the computers need that CAPABILITY for them to be able to 'talk'.

(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_crossover_cable under 'automatic crossover').

Beyond that, what operating system are you USING? Windows, I assume? To what end are you looking to network these computers (internet sharing / file swapping / gaming, etc)? I've had mixed success at getting two computers to talk with each other; it seems to either be RELATIVELY easy, or maddeningly difficult with not much in-between.Just tripped over this, too. Only skimmed it, but it'll be a lot more help than I really could be.

Happy networking!  thank you for all your post's, great info seems a bit easier now!

Solve : Why is OpenDNS blocking sites??

Answer»

I set up OpenDNS on my HOME network of three computers about six months ago via the Belkin 54g wireless router. I did not change any settings on the individual computers (at least I don't remember doing that).

At the OpenDNS website I set up an account and set  content screening to "minimal" (protection against phishing only).

This worked FINE until today when suddenly sites like youtube and the Internet Movie Data Base are COMING up as blocked by OpenDNS.

I logged into OpenDNS and tried to reset my content screening levels but it doesn't seem to be taking. I tried "NONE", "minimal" and "custom".

Why would this suddenly HAPPEN?

I am the administrator on all the computers in my network. All are using XP SP3.   Does it happen with all three computers?Yes.Okay, I don't what's going on. As suddenly as this problem popped up yesterday afternoon it is gone now. All the sites I noticed being blocked are back in view. This happened sometime in the last few hours.

Solve : is it possible to use two nics to download?

Answer»

sorry, prefetchesFirst of all, it is possible. Has anyone ever heard of a T1? A T1 is 24 phone lines bundled together to get higher transfer speeds.
Second, did any of you actually do any research before REPLYING to the question?
Here is some open source software that allows you to put multiple connections together to achieve higher bandwidth. It's been around for quite some time now.
http://www.heroinewarrior.com/firehose.php
no, we used pure logic here  that will only increase the speed of the local link not the external link.

in windows you can "bridge" the connections into a single logical interface. This will not increase the "Internet" speed.

on a layer 3 switch and router you can "trunk" the ports.

Neither of these will increase the internet speed. They will increase the intranet speed however.

True.... If you really wanted to take advantage of a program like firehose (which I linked earlier) you would need multiple internet connections. Otherwise, there would be no point.

How does bridging or trunking increase network speed though? Quote from: michaewlewis on September 02, 2009, 12:36:03 PM
How does bridging or trunking increase network speed though?

on the PC bridging links the two NICs together and forms one with double the original link speed. example would be two 1GB cards working as one to provide 2GB. The same theory applies to Trunking.Yeah, like Percy Weasley in "Harry Potter."

I think he means "prefetches."what?    Any way he stated that he had two connections.  I thought CAUSE they were seperate that you couldnt tie the two together to get the data packets to come threw both of them.an example would be, if you had a gigabit WAN connected to a router and two 100mbps NICs in a PC, using both would be faster.

But, No consumer oriented Internet connection(that I know of) achieves even more then 100mbps.

I was answering the original question:

Quote
I was just wondering is it possible to have two seprate nics downloading from the internet on the same computer via a router effectively doubling your speed

If the OP is using a standard DSL or Cable connection, chances are their connection does not exceed the 100mbps throughput that their NIC is capable of- assuming it is "only" 100mbps.

The question is basically ASKING wether it will be faster. It will not, for any consumer-targeted internet connection, allow for faster speeds. In order for it to do so:

The Internet connection itself must be higher then the total throughput of the NICs.

the Router must support gigabit (otherwise it's WAN interface will only be 100mbps as well, limiting the total traffic to all LAN connections to 100mbps regardless of the actual capabilities of the Internet connection).

both NICs must support simultaneous usage... not so much a problem now since IRQ/DMA contention is now a thing of the past.

However, on the other hand, most PCs now come with an on-board gigabit connection, in which case two gigabit connections will NOT increase the speed of downloads.

I think you've got a bridge confused with something else: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_bridge
Might want to check out trunking, too. Maybe link aggregation?what are some of the FORE mentioned programs?
