Solve : Router protection "enabled" slows down internet.? |
|
Answer» Sorry if I don't know how to word what I'm trying to explain. I got a Belkin N Wireless Router about a month ago and up until about a week ago had been using it without the protection enabled. So in other words, I could USE my wireless device just fine, and I still can, but there was a possibility that neighbors could also be using my internet connection. So I called Belkin support and they helped me configure it so that no one can access it without a password. Wireless device still working fine BUT since I did that my internet connection SEEMS to have SLOWED down noticeably. |

Solve : Ethernet connection recieving but not sending packets? |
|
Answer» I have been having a problem where my internet is fully connected as it should be, an IP address is assigned by DHCP, and I am having no problem receiving packets. The problem with this however is that it will not send packets. This used to be a minor issue but now it seems like this will happen all the time and can sometime even last for days. I have tried connecting with both my PC and my laptop and also using different cable connections so I am fairly certain the problem lies with the actual modem or maybe the actual ethernet cable. Whenever i have the problem, neither the Sent or the Sync lights will be one. Installers? What installers? I opted for the free installation (self-install kit). Everything worked great for about six months. Then my internet connection started giving me fits. Some days I couldn't get on at all. Some days I could work for one or two hours but it would randomly quit working. The Motorola SB5100 surfboard cable modem would not stay online. Usually the "send" light would just blink for hours. |

Solve : Surprisingly enough not connecting to internet? |
|
Answer» I am usng winxp home edition. A week ago i installed drivers for a different broadband modem using USB cable which worked fine as long as i used it, but it messed up anything that was connecting a network or internet. Why would you install a DRIVER for a different modem than you are using? I have a hunch that is your problem, remove it. Quote from: midsail on August 20, 2009, 08:01:43 PM A week ago i installed drivers for a different broadband modem using USB cable which worked fine as long as i used it, but it messed up anything that was connecting a network or internet. are you saying that you can connect when you plug a network cable straight from the modem to the network card or peer-to-peer, but when you plug it to a router and you try to access the network or internet through the router from a computer plugged into the router you cannot connect? |

Solve : Can no longer access external HD wirelessly.? |
|
Answer» Hey guys. I have a WD internal IDE HD that I put in an enclosure to be used as external. Been using it for a few months and it WORKS fine. RECENTLY I got a Belkin N router and have been using my Archos IMT to play files on it from my computer using the router, obviously. I have no problem accessing files I have set to share on my C: drive. And when I first CONFIGURED the files on my external drive I had no problems either. Now, for some reason, I can't access the external on my Archos at all. I checked the share settings and they seem to be correct. And I checked in WMP and the folders I allowed to be shared from it are still there too. I've done some searches online for solutions but everything I've tried hasn't helped yet. Any suggestions? Thanks.Anyone?? You should check to see if your external drive is properly connected to the network (if it's AUTOMATICALLY getting an IP is it getting the correct one or is it in a 169 loop, etc.)How do I check that? And I forgot to mention that it's connected via firewire rather than USB. Would that make a difference?I found out one of my problems: I think I need to connect the HD directly to my router. But I think I would need to upgrade my router to do that. BUT I can't figure out why I actually WAS able access those files on the external HD wirelessly the very first time I tried it. STRANGE. So I guess now my question would be is there a way to access an external HD wirlelessly WITHOUT having it connected directly to a router? connect it to a PC and share from the PC. the PC will need to be on in order to access the shared files though. That's how I've been doing it. The HD is connected to my PC and everything is on.If it's connected to your PC you can just share it like any other drive or files by right clicking it and going to properties. If your router has a port you can plug it in there and configure it through the router. It seems the problem is an issue with using WMP to sync the files on that particular HDD because I connected another (portable) HDD via USB and set the files on it to share and it worked fine. So then I tried a program called Tversity. It let me sync the files on the original HDD and they showed up on my Archos media player but some would play and some wouldn't and they were all .avi files. Guess I'm just going to have to look around for some more programs till I find one that might work.Looks like I fixed the problem. I just stopped using WMP and am using a program called TwonkyMedia and it's working great and was a breeze to set up. |

Solve : No one can fix my computer! Please help!? |
|
Answer» Hi, my name is Sandra and I have a big problem. I am having to use my 11-year-old Dell which is so sl-o-o-o-w because I have a problem with my 1-1/2 year old Toshiba laptop. My Toshiba is a A215 model, 1.86 GB Ram, AMD Turion 64 x 2 Processor, 32-bit, Vista. I use an Ethernet to connect to the net. When I brought it home I could not get it to connect to the internet. I called the tech guy and he said all he did was to fix the battery connection. Start with basic stuff. For example, where the ethernet cable plugs in at both ends, those connections typically have indicators that light when the cable is connected and properly signaling from both ends. Do both LEDs light? There are numerous ways to get to a Network Connections page from Control Panel, sometimes a desktop icon, or even using Windows Help. On that page are numerous communication devices include dial up connection, wireless connections, incoming connections (or infrared), etc. Find the Local Area Connection icon. Left click. If the enabled option is available, then click on it. If the disable option is available, click on it. Then left click the icon again to go back to enable it. Does that get the cable LEDs to light? Move on to Device manager (found in Control Panel or use Windows Help). Is anything in error or conflict (IE yellow exclamation point)? If so, then what? At this point, we are only looking for problems. Cures come later. Down in the right corner along with the clock is (typically) icons to indicate modem connections, Wireless connections, and local area network connections. Be aware of them and what is displayed for the Local network. When data is exchanged, they will flash. When the port is disabled, the icon indicates same usually with a red X or something equivalent. Network connectons can be disabled at many layers. Currently we are only looking at a lowest level. Confirming the simplest of hardware (PHYSICAL) layer connections. These must test good before moving up to higher level protocols. Meanwhile go to Toshiba's web site to find and download something called "PC Diagnostic Tool".Westom, thanks for your reply. Nothing is working. I'm going to switch from AT&T to Comcast and hope that will work. It is so confusing when one computer will connect and one won't. Thanks, again for your suggestions.Did you check the stuff that westom suggested? Where does it stop working? We would be more than happy to help you where you have problems, if you're up to then so are we.Quantos, yes, I did every Westom suggested and nothing worked. I go no further than connecting page and I get a message that it can't connect. I'm going out of town this coming weekend and will take it with me to see if it will connect from the motel. I will appreciate and and all suggestions and thanks. Quote from: Nonnie on July 27, 2009, 04:34:41 PM Quantos, yes, I did every Westom suggested and nothing worked.Nothing I posted was supposed to fix anything. We are not yet ready to fix anything. First the problem must be defined. Later, replies become as useful as the facts you first post. Having not reported what was discovered, you again have no useful replies. Problem solving is a two step process. First get facts. Second step is fixing something. Only thing posted was how to get facts. Later move on to fixing anything. Step one - what do those lights report at each end of the cable. That fixes nothing. Only requests information not in your first post that was necessary to even KNOW what is wrong. Fixing comes much later. your dell connects but not your laptop...!!! so you are using a router correct?? if so is your laptop connecting through wireless or through ethernet cable? are you getting an address from the router for the laptop(ipconfig /all)? if not that's a good place to start...find out why your not getting an address from the router...!!! then maybe do a winsocket fix on the laptop and try again.... because of your following statement... "My laptop has been working great until a few weeks ago and it would freeze. I was able to get it up and going each time until two week ago and nothing would work." I would suggest doing a winsocket fix first... see here: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/06/18/repair-and-reset-windows-vista-tcpip-winsock-catalog-corruption/ good luck Quote from: westom on July 28, 2009, 08:56:36 AM Nothing I posted was supposed to fix anything. We are not yet ready to fix anything. First the problem must be defined. Later, replies become as useful as the facts you first post. Having not reported what was discovered, you again have no useful replies. I appreciated every reply I get. Sometimes, it takes so long to boot up the Dell and extra long time to get from page to page, I don't get on the web because of other things to do. On the LAN settings drop down box, it has two boxes to click. One - Automatically detect settings. Two - Use automatic configuration scrip. Number one was clicked. I have tried numerous ways to set or get a connection. Again, nothing worked. Everything looked good on the Device Manager. No exclamation mark. Computer icons in bottom right have a red X. I assume you suggested going to Toshiba on the laptop but, no connection. I really do appreciate any and all help. Quote from: Nonnie on July 30, 2009, 10:27:38 AM Everything looked good on the Device Manager. No exclamation mark.Quoted are the two sentences that report something useful. That red X means any one of 50 items could be defective. Trying different configurations all day and still the right combination might not be found. You cannot look at all fifty. So work through the problem one step at a time. Follow the evidence rather than wildly doing this and doing that. Does Device Manager even show the network interface? If defective, then no exclamation mark may exist on an entry that is not there (listed under Network Adapters). In Network Connections, is the Local Area Connection enabled? IOW when right clicking on the icon, is only the disable option available? But again, step one - what do those lights report at each end of the cable. That fixes nothing. Only requests information not in your first post that was necessary and is still necessary to know what is wrong. Until lowest level questions are answers, the next and many other useful suggesting cannot be posted. Numerous things that provide the best information do not require booting Windows. But first that very first question must be answered. Quote from: Nonnie on July 27, 2009, 04:34:41 PM I go no further than connecting page and I get a message that it can't connect. What "connecting page" is this? Are you talking about Internet Explorer? Quote from: westom on July 30, 2009, 10:52:17 AM That red X means any one of 50 items could be defective. 50 items?! Sandra, if you hover your mouse pointer over one of those icons, what does the pop up tooltip say? It might say something like (for example) "LAN. A network cable is unplugged." Let us know?If you have internet problems and you paid some "tech" to check your battery you should get your money back from them. Check the lights on your router and computer when the ethernet cable is plugged in. TELL us if they blink or light up or anything. If you see red Xs' that means you are not connected. You should try a new ethernet cable. Don't forget to tell us if the lights show anything.Back from weekend trip. I was able to connect to BS using the wireless connection at the motel. WesTom, on the Device Manager list, there is no listing for Network Interface. Rob, I have tried to use the "Set up a Network Connection" and I get a message saying "Network cable unplugged" and has a red x. My Ethernet cable IS plugged in. Yes, I do use IE. But, I get the message when I try to connect or to set up a connecting I get a message saying "Network connection failed to connect to Broadband". TechGeek, I don't have a router set up but have been told that using one would probably fix my internet problem. I'm puzzled that I have used the Ethernet cable, which I have replaced, for a year and a half with no problem and all of a sudden I need one. When I try to install the router, is it installed (or routed) on/from my old Dell or the laptop? There is no a place on my laptop where I plug in the cable cord with a light. On the Ethernet box down on my baseboard of my floor, there is a tiny green light. I appreciate your bearing with me. I am a novice with the inner workings of a computer. I am acceptable at navigating on the computer. Thanks again, everyone for helping. Quote from: Nonnie on August 03, 2009, 11:09:41 AM WesTom, on the Device Manager list, there is no listing for Network Interface. Now we have some useful facts. If Device Manager does not see the NIC, then no drivers will load for the NIC. Why. Well the reasons why are few. Point is, now we have made progress. There probably is a light where the Ethernet cable connects to the Toshiba. But if the light is extinguished, then you would never know the light is there. The router does have a light. Either where the Ethernet cable connects of a light on its front panel. Number under the router's front panel light would correspond to a number where the Ethernet cable connects. However, since Device Manager does not see the NIC and since no driver would therefore load, we can not zero in on what is probably a hardware problem unique to the Toshiba. Notice how many suspects suddenly get eliminated with some basic facts. Better computers provide hardware diagnostics to solve this problem. For example, your Dell comes with these diagnostics on the hard drive, on a CD-Rom, and on their web site. Diagnostics would confirm an NIC failure in hardware or in Windows. Unfortunately, I know of no comprehensive hardware diagnostics for Toshiba. They may exist. But I have never had to find and use them. You have an NIC problem either in Toshiba hardware or in Windows. Maybe you could identify the NIC component manufacturer (ie Broadcom?) and download a diagnostic from them. If Windows cannot see the NIC in Device Manager, then no driver from anywhere is going to fix the problem One final suggestion. Some laptop computers must have a keyboard combination that disconnects power from the NIC. For example, hold the Fn key and press the key with what looks like a transmitting antenna. This function is how to turn off WiFi when in an airplane by literally disconnecting power. You might find and try that key – or look for details in the Toshiba web site. But this much you do know. Windows does not see the NIC hardware. Your next step is to find (if possible) comprehensive Toshiba hardware diagnostics, discover why the NIC is defective (or not powered), OR add new hardware to replace the defective NIC hardware. Notice how many actions now that the problem is limited by what they mean in CSI by ‘follow the evidence’. You may have to buy a PC Card – a peripheral card plugged in to make a new Ethernet port. Find Toshiba’s comprehensive hardware diagnostic – or one from the NIC manufacturer. Find that Fn key that powers off Wifi. Possible solutions to addressing a problem that has been limited to and identified by this fact: Windows sees no NIC hardware. My laptop is now back on the internet! I had to switch from Bell South to Comcast but it's working. I have a modem now and a router. Unfortunately, the 11-year-old Dell finally gave up on me. It couldn't take anymore! I want to thank all of you who were so patient with me and for all of the suggestions you gave. Still don't know why it wouldn't work but I can live with that as long as I can get online. Again, thanks for your help!No problems Nonnie, come back anytime. |

Well I have a Netgear WGT624 I found in my basement and it's better then that one I have now. But I need a password and I can't get in, so is there some way to get through that? normally resetting the router will return it to default settings(including password)...check manual on netgear website...I have a LINKSYS router and a Trendnet router. Both have areset button that RESETS all settings to factory default, including the password. I think Netgear router would not be different.NO! Solve : NIC Data Transfer Rate questions? |
|
Answer» HELLO guys, good morning. I'm from Philippines. Just wanna ask these 1. What's the purpose of Data Transfer Rate in my NIC? 2. Does Data Transfer Rate has to do with my Internet Speed or the Data Transfer Rate is for transferring files only via network? 3. Does the Data Transfer Rate increase the bandwidth of my Internet? Hope someone can EXPLAIN my noob questions. Thanks and God bless. The data transfer is a function of your NIC. What numbers are you concerned about? What program is showing those numbers to you?Hello Sir Quantos! Thanks for replying my topic. My NIC Realtek has a 1000Mbps data transfer rate. I didn't use any program. When I'm connected to the Internet it says in the Notification Area that I have a 100Mbps. So my questions are: 1. What's the purpose of Data Transfer Rate in my NIC? 2. Does Data Transfer Rate has to do with my Internet Speed or the Data Transfer Rate is for transferring files only via network? 3. Does the Data Transfer Rate increase the bandwidth of my Internet? Thanks and God bless. Quote from: SHENGTON on August 07, 2009, 07:23:23 PM Hello Sir Quantos! Thanks for replying my topic. First off I've never been knighted. Quote 1. What's the purpose of Data Transfer Rate in my NIC?It shows you what your maximum available is. Quote 2. Does Data Transfer Rate has to do with my Internet Speed or the Data Transfer Rate is for transferring files only via network? It can tell you what your maximum rate could be, but you will never achieve that. Quote 3. Does the Data Transfer Rate increase the bandwidth of my Internet? No, the internet bandwidth will increase your Data Transfer Rate. The more you pay for the more you will get, but keep in mind, you are always limited by the website that you are accessing, that means that if they are overused your connection will be slow. Hello Sir! Ahh ok, so it won't increase the bandwidth. For my number two question Sir, since I'm newbie when it comes to networking. It seems you didn't get the thought of my question. Does the Data Transfer Rate is for transferring files only via network? Thanks again Sir and God bless. You can quit calling me sir anytime now. Data Transfer is mostly applicable to file transfers, but also applies to the rate at which you receive PAGES.Hello Quantos! Sorry for calling you "Sir". Ahh ok, could you give an EXAMPLE about this phrase "but also applies to the rate at which you receive pages."? Thanks and God bless. your Network CIRCUITRY can handle gigabit speeds (1000mbps) but it says 100mbps in your notification area because that is the speed your router/modem is capable of. The network circuitry is used for both network and internetwork transfers; If you have a router then this routes internet traffic to the proper target machine on your network, and each PC can communicate with one another. the maximum speed of a network transfer is the lowest speed of the network cards of each PC as well as the router itself. in my case, for example, my desktop is capable of 1000mbps, and my wireless laptop is capable of 300mbps. My router is capable of gigabit speeds. in this case network transfers between my laptop and my desktop will be limited by the laptop, which can vary (since it's wireless). between my two gigabit enabled desktops speeds can approach 500mb/s for transfers between the two. However this is only for direct transfers of data; this speed is of course limited by hard disk speeds during transfers of files/folders between shared drives.I can't give you an example of it, I'm not sure how. It also effects how fast you download webpages. I don't know how else to state it. PS - Please stop asking God to bless me, I'm Pagan. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 07, 2009, 08:29:57 PM your Network circuitry can handle gigabit speeds (1000mbps) That would depend on the NIC, not all of them support gigabit. Quote from: Quantos on August 07, 2009, 08:33:15 PM That would depend on the NIC, not all of them support gigabit. Quote My NIC Realtek has a 1000Mbps data transfer rate.Quantos Ahh ok...But I got a question again. Does the Turbo Mode in wireless router improve or boost the signal? Because my friend has a Edimax wireless router which has a Turbo Mode feature. I forgot the model, sorry for that. No, that won't boost the signal. When it's disabled it probably cripples the signal.Quatos Thanks for the info. Thanks for the correction BC, I can always count on you guys when I miss the obvious |

Solve : Network limit?? |
|
Answer» Quote from: Quantos on August 07, 2009, 04:01:42 PM Why do people keep insisting on firmware/BIOS upgrades. UNLESS the specific problem is stated as a fix in a release you should absolutely NEVER flash a piece of hardware. PERHAPS I should have included a disclaimer with that suggestion...what was I thinking? In the case of DD-WRT, it actually does add features to a LINKSYS router that are OTHERWISE not included... ...but since that's not supported by Linksys, that would be done at one's own risk... |

I could not allow this by normal means, but had to apply a special rule to do so. My concern is because my firewall was so admit about blocking ntoskrnl.exe access. Should I have a concern?I can see some posts about a bug in Sygate, doing just that, but those postings are from couple of years ago.Thank you for your RESPONSE. Yeah, Symantec bought Sygate SEVERAL years ago, so it was dead ended, but I have been using it a long time and feel comfortable with the program. I tried ZoneAlarm Pro on a newer machine and found it more difficult. |

Solve : trying to connect a desktop to wireless router? |
|
Answer» Hey,
Quote from: flyingtxn on August 09, 2009, 04:39:09 PM
naturally I'm a little confused... Do you mean, "How do I get my desktop to connect using wired Ethernet?" Quote from: flyingtxn on August 09, 2009, 04:39:09 PM Hey, buy and add a wireless card to your desktop...then set it up using network setup...Which is the best to buy and where should I get it? By the way, thanks for the response. blockhead, I can connect it with the wired ethernet, as I did before we moved. The problem is that I had to mount the modem in the garage (50 feet from the desk) and the guy that OWNS the house wont let me run any wires. So now I have to figure out how to get the desktop to recognize wireless signal instead of using the ethernet cord. According to the other respondent, I have to get a wireless card for the desktop. Thanks Dev Quote from: flyingtxn on August 09, 2009, 05:46:57 PM blockhead, my bad.. Yes, adding a wireless adapter card will suffice....what is the make/model of your desktop computer? It is a gateway ELP 500xwell, I can't seem to find which motherboard is in your system...Can you look inside your computer and tell which kind of slots it has? ie. PCI, PCIexpress x1, x4, x8, x16 (these are bus widths, the x1 bus width will have a shorter slot and than the x16) Which wireless technology does your router support? Is it, 802.11 /b /g or /n ? If you don't know give me the make and model of your router..I will take some time this week and take it apart. Thanks for the help. I will let you know when I get the info. Thanks!Dev |

Solve : Loss of Connection? |
|
Answer» Quote from: Ireland914 on August 07, 2009, 11:09:59 PM After all it looks like the NIC on the motherboard is dead. That means the NIC does not appear in Device Manager or is flagged as defective there. Or did you just give up? Indicator lighting and extinguishing with cable connect and disconnect says some NIC FUNCTIONS are working. It shows up in the device manager without any PROBLEMS but there is no light at the connection at the back of the computer. The computer also knows when the network cable is CONNECTED or not... just can't connect to the internet. It can't obtain an IP ADDRESS and it says thee is limited to no connection.I borrowed a PCI network card from a friend and it works fine. Problem solved! Quote from: Ireland914 on August 09, 2009, 12:20:19 AM I borrowed a PCI network card from a friend and it works fine. Problem solved! cool.....Just ask him if you can borrow it for a while...maybe he'll forget about it |

Answer» There, I rattled a few CHICKEN chunks over a candle. That should fix the curse. All sorted...... thanks for all the help and advice. I managed to rename my network on the NEW desktop... to be honest I can't quite remember how I did it though! I KNOW I went into control panel, and it was there somewhere! I also managed to sort out my printer, cos it wasn't compatible with vista, only with xp, but somehow I managed to get the correct SOFTWARE, and it's also working, so I'm well CHUFFED with myself! |

Answer» I have a Linksys WRT150N router with limited bandwidth LAN INTERNET from my ISP. Do you have any peer to peer software running? How do I view router logs?It should have some sort of mac address viewing, so you can see all the computers connected to it. Or you could just put a password on it Quote from: Cityscape on August 01, 2009, 11:31:22 AM How do I view router logs? What router do you have? If you provide manufacturer and model information I can link you to a how-to, which shouldn't be confused with a HoDown. Quote from: Cityscape on July 31, 2009, 10:28:20 PM I have a Linksys WRT150N router with limited bandwidth LAN internet from my ISP.why not just enable security...I was just looking at the MANUAL for that one. I concur, just secure your connection. |

Solve : ethernet controller issue? |
|
Answer» i searched for this topic but couldnt find a direct answer to my problem.. I have satt internet and have a wireless router set up. I got home from vacation and the linksys would not connect. My laptop works fine and connects. After troubleshooting i find a question mark on the ethernet controller (device manager). I downloaded the DRIVER again from the dell webpage from my laptop.. I tried unistalling the driver and reinstallling it by using a memory stick with the file i downloaded from dell. I cannot connect to the net with the computer with the problem. Go back into device manager, right click on the network adapter, select properties. What does it say in the "Device Status" box? it said this device is working properly. i have a yellow question mark BESIDE "other devices" and subfolder Ethernet controllers (with a !) And i cannot hard WIRE connect it due to LOCATION.. after a week of troubleshooting it finally started working... instead of "restarting" i turned the power off and back on. once back restarted the wireless card started picking up the router and i was back online. i checked the device manager and the ethernet controller was not showing up nor any "question marks".. apparently it wasnt picking up the linksys card for my wireless router.. oh well.. any thoughts as to why this happened???Another computer mystery.... Quote from: Broni on August 06, 2009, 09:48:08 PM Another computer mystery.... The first thing that I do when I have a problem is take it for a car ride. |

Solve : lost connection? |
|
Answer» Hi there i have a very CONFUSING PROBLEM. I would be grateful for any help I can get. I have a adsl connection and check a few EMAIL boxes. Whenever i check one BOX even doing it independently of the others, I loose my internet connection. This happens on 2 computers on the same network. I can check the others with no problem at all. I have checked this one via web mail and NOTICED a fair amount of spam could this be the issue? thanks Try to delete all the SPAM within webmail. After all of the suspect mail is gone, see if you can access the mail account without locking up your computer/network. |
