Solve : Internet connection accidentally blocking certain sites??

Answer»

Hi! I've been STRUGGLING with this issue for quite a while and it's been bothering me to no end! Hopefully you might be able to help me out!

I am currently at university, using a Local Area Connection. I am aware that the university blocks torrenting which I am totally fine with though when I try to CARRY out a process such as posting a large entry on Livejournal.com or Dreamwidth.org, it tries to load for a couple seconds and then fails. When in Google Chrome, it says that it's "uploaded 100%" but then I receive "Error 7 (net::ERR_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out.". When using Internet Explorer, it either doesn't load at all or I get the standard "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". When I try to carry out a different process on dreamwidth and livejournal (editing my layout), Chrome tells me "Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): The connection was reset." These issues always happen no matter when I try them.

I have tried carrying out the tasks through an online proxy server but this has not changed my situation. I have also cleared out my browsing data and tried a different COMPUTER but to no avail. I have also hooked up to the university' wifi in the hope that this might change things but that didn't help.

Any ideas?

Have you discussed this with anyone at the University? Their tech's know the system better than we do.

Quantos is spot on here. There's probably some RESTRICTIONS on the network you're connect to at the university with regards to how you're allowed to connect. Often, these are blanket policies that will block all of a certain type of ACTIVITY but end up unintentionally blocking legitimate things.

Contact your university's tech department and find out if there's anything you or they can do. Their network, their policies. They're the only ones who could answer this.

Solve : Ongoing intermittent wireless network access issues, across networks?

Answer»

Good afternoon everyone, I hope you're very well

I've been having issues with my wifi adapter on my Sony Vaio S4XP, running Windows SP3 I think. The problem causes maybe every page in every browser to intermittently hang, sometimes die, and I frequently repair the adapter and reload the page.

I'd like to try and diagnose this, and wondered what system tools or freeware I can run to ... debug? Maybe the event viewer.

I'm also experiencing a hang issue, nothing appears warning/error wise in application/system events, but it takes minutes before the OS loads fully (where the system TRAY has TuneUp Utilities and the network connections and their statuses...) but that's a lower priority right now..

As always, any help/SUGGESTIONS most appreciated.

Happy to try combofix/hijackthis (years since I've tried to fix OS bugs etc but remember these two little apps as being particularly invaluable)

I wasn't certain this was a device / driver / OS / virus issue until I began testing a livedrive app recently. This reports when the connection to the server has been lost, and restored (showing 'repair adapter' resolves the intermittent problem causing me to lose connectivity with... the web.)

Thanks in advance,

Jonny
Update: the problem has arisen (14:12), suspected when 'sent' and

'drafts' in gmail hangs... checked wifi status, no packets being sent

or received... then Livedrive reports currently not connected.

turned wifi off and BACK on (using physical switch on vaio) which

resolves... OR (??) had no impact, and the intermittent issue resolved

itself before the wifi adapter was turned back on and the wifi

connetion was re-established.

it's just really annoying! working on affiliate network management, and

the impact to my productivity is painful!

thanks again,

JonnyTry changing your channel within your wireless modem, sometimes it could be a router issue and not a pc.

If its on automatic change to 11.

Post results once you have tried it.You could provide some more detail.
Wireless networking, by definition, is not reliable. If we are talking about 80211g specifications. The regulations sate that users must expect interference when using current standards. As yet, there is no unregulated wireless service that provides 100% reliability. The MERE fact that others GET perfect service does not mean you can also.

Please provide some detail about the layout, the topography, of you wireless network. See if you can locate other witless devices in your area.

This document below is dated, but the problem presented is still a matter of great concern with regard to wireless reliability. It could mean that somebody in your space could be using a Bluetooth headset the could weaken lour Wi-Fi connection. No a mere possibility. It does happen.
http://www.hp.com/rnd/library/pdf/WiFi_Bluetooth_coexistance.pdf
That is why I said above "users must expect interference"

I should reiterate that this problem seems to follow me from network to network, does that suggest that the channel settings could be the problem?

Updating settings and monitoring, thanks for the suggestions (more soon)

Solve : Cannot connect to any wireless network?

Answer»

I have a Toshiba Satellite L305D. I has worked great for some time. Recently I noticed some connection PROBLEMS at public network locations I.e Starbucks etc. Now I cannot connect to my home wireless modem. Network and sharing center will not respond and when I look for wireless networks, nothing SHOWS up, although I can see several, including my own on my smartphone. I received a ERROR message that configfree had stopped working. I'm lost. You may want to reinstall the network and or utility drivers for your laptop at the Toshiba support site.Configfree is Toshiba's tool for connecting to other devices and networks.

You can uninstall it and just use the regular Windows wireless settings without ISSUE.

If you really want to keep Configfree, I would STILL uninstall it. Go to Toshiba's support website, click "Download" at the top, select your model.

Note that there are a great many builds for the L305D. Look on the bottom of your laptop for the complete model number. Should look something like "L305D-S5868".

Once on your model's download page, next to "Refine Search by:", choose your operating system in the first box, then "LAN" in the second box. This will narrow the list down to your LAN driver and the Configfree download. Download Configfree and install it again.

Let us know if that fixes your issue.

Solve : Can't get my new router to connect to internet?

Answer»
Hi everyone !

I have a Sony Vaio laptop with window 7 64 bit , I can connect to internet through my ADSL router ( SAGEM ) without any problems , I am trying to replace it with a new router ( TP link 300Mbps N ADSL2+ Modem Router ), but I failed to make it connect to the internet, I tried the troubleshooting , and it keep telling me " Local area network doesn't have a valid IP configuration" I know that to install the new router I have to open its page on the browser, to set the configuration , and its default IP is 192.168.1.1 , I tried to open the page but it didn't open !
what puzzling me is : why my old router work just fine, while the new router fail to connect
I used Command Prompt ( using ipconfig ) , to get the internet connection values , that what I got with my old router :

so please, help me to solve this problem .

Thank you in advance .Looks like your PC isn't picking up an IP address from the new router, so it's getting a private address beginning with 169.
I'm assuming you're already using an Ethernet cable to connect to the new router? If not, do that, don't use the wireless connection, at least to begin with.
Try assigning your PC a static IP - right click the network icon in the taskbar, click network and sharing centre, then change adapter settings. Right click on your local area connection and click properties. Click on internet protocol version 4, and click properties. Change the option to use the following IP address, and GIVE it an address of 192.168.1.2, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and default gateway of 192.168.1.1. Use 192.168.1.1 as your DNS server for now, too.
Now try and access 192.168.1.1, any better? If not, try a ping test - click start, run, type cmd, hit enter. Type ping 192.168.1.1 and let us know what you SEE.
yes, I'm using the ethernet cable for connection , not the wireless connection .
I used the address you gave me , but unfortunately I couldn't open the router page . And this is the result of ping test :

C:\Users\Salwa>Is this router new, or used? 100% positive that its default IP is 192.168.1.1? If so, I would say the router is faulty, as it's neither assigning an IP address through DHCP which it should do by default, nor responding to a ping.
Well. my brother used it for ONE week only,( it is still new in my opinion ), it was working fine ! I wonder why it doesn't connect now What I was getting at when I asked if it was new, is that if it's used then the configuration may not be the factory default settings. If for example he had it set up to use an IP of 192.168.0.1, you wouldn't be able to ping it at 192.168.1.1, and if he turned DHCP off you obviously wouldn't get an address from it without assigning yourself one.
If he hasn't made any changes, then I would still go with the faulty router theory, but if there's a way to set it back to factory settings without accessing the admin panel, try that first. Some routers have a reset button or a reset procedure, this will be detailed in the manual.
I think you right , but I have restored the router to factory settings , I have pressed that reset button many times ! Usual procedure is known as a 30-30-30 - with the router on, hold down the reset button for 30 seconds, then pull the power, still holding the reset button for another 30 seconds, then plug it back in, holding the reset button for a further 30 seconds. So in total, hold the reset button for 90 seconds, unplugging after the first 30, and plugging it back in after the second 30. If you've already done that, or similar, I would assume the router is faulty, and I would look at returning it under warranty - if it's only a week or so old it will surely still be in warranty.
Thank you .

Solve : Computer locks up for 10 min periodically.?

Answer»

I am getting annoyed.

I'm running a refurbished LAPTOP that i bought from a guy whose business is refurbishing and restoring computers and laptops ALIKE. I got it for a good price after giving him my old laptop... I'm starting to regret this to an extent.

My main problem is this:

Anytime i begin streaming videos from youtube, downloading torrents or playing League of legends, my computer will randomly lock up. Audio stalls, the mouse wont move. the computer is basically USELESS. I can wait anywhere from 15 seconds to 15 minutes for this lock up to resolve itself... which it does and it seem like the internet reconnects. Then it runs perfectly until the next freeze.

I'm running WIN7 ultimate
the network card is an Atheros AR5B93 WIFI adapter.
(the lan adapter is a Broadcom net link gigabit ethranet
Processor: AMD V120 Processor 2.20 hz
3 gb of RAM
Disk drive: Toshiba Mk2555gsx ata device

If ANYONE has any advice... it would be really appreciated.

Just a side note, I've reset my Ip address, I've installed latest drivers, I've done everything i and the internet seems to have thought of. I'm beginning to thing its the card itself.

CoorsHave you checked the system temperature?

If it was somehow refurbished by someone other than the manufacturer, there's the possibility something was done wrong (like forgetting to hookup the fan or not applying the heat sink correctly). Before opening laptop which could void any warranty, I'd check with the guy you bought it from and report the issue. Maybe he will work with you to resolve this. If you want to troubleshoot it yourself you can try SUGGESTIONS below that dont require opening laptop.

It could be Temperature, RAM, or Hard Drive .... from problems like this that I have diagnosed in the past. 99% of the fans out there in laptops have tachs on them and the system will shutdown if it detects no movement of the fan to protect itself. quaxo is correct that it can be temp related such as lack of thermal compound between CPU/GPU and heatsink etc.

If the hard drive LED is flickering or constantly on during the lock up, I'd suspect there is a issue with the hard drive possibly. System event logs usually list read/write issues. If the lock up is happening when reading/writing to swap space ( area of the hard drive that acts like virtual memory ) your pointer can lock up during the process.

Memtest86 can be run on it to verify that the memory works well for all addresses for the entire range of available memory. ( Seen some problems before where computers run fine and fast when not much is running, but then you multitask and address/access an upper part of your RAM count and then lock ups occur such as a Pentium 4 with 2 x 512MB sticks once and a memory issue when addressing memory in the 700MB region. Memtest86 pointed this out in RED, REPLACED RAM stick and problem solved. )

Speedfan works good for looking at hardware temperatures. Most hardware can be read and information displayed on temps as well as RPM's of fans etc.

All this can be diagnosed without opening the laptop and using software free on the web. Memtest86 needs to be burned to a CD or made into a bootable thumb drive.

I am hoping that the guy you bought it from has a 30 day warranty at minimum. I use to rebuild and sell refurbs and I gave 30 day warranty as long as people didnt open the computers. If they opened the case the warranty was void. I'd place a security seal between the cover and case that if broken I'd know its been tampered with and a small drop of nail polish on the corner of screws on laptops that if removed/signs of tampering, I would not be liable for any issues.

I had to do this when computers were more expensive 10 years ago and a customers son decided to try to perform a video card upgrade and "Forced" a wrong 8x AGP GeForce video card into a 2x AGP slot unintended for that AGP video card, which is keyed by design to try to keep wrong cards out and the force exerted to try to get that wrong card in there split the AGP connector and power was applied and the kid destroyed/smoked the motherboard. I could have said only an idiot would have forced with that much force a wrong video card into the AGP slot of the motherboard, but I bit my tongue and I decided to eat 50% of the cost of new motherboard and immediately started to tamper seal systems.

Solve : DSL-2520U Accessible through web?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a DSL-2520U LAN/USB combo modem with H/W version T1. When I use irc messengers like xchat, there are some servers on which by default the user's hostmask is his IP clearly shown there. And if I post on some websites or forums, MY IP is recorded there. I tried POINTING my browser to my IP and the modem's configuration page opens.

One of the mates on the irc private msges me and told me that my IP opens the DSL config page. How do I SETUP my modem so that any one from the internet if opens my IP, is not REDIRECTED to my config page but either opens nothing "Page not FOUND" or its like blocked.
I CHECKED and the modem does not have an option for Remote admin or Access.

ThanksQuote

It can be managed as stated here, and very easy default user/password as admin adminhttp://www.speedguide.net/routers/d-link-dsl-2520u-adsl2-ethernetusb-combo-router-1773

Just changing the default password to something complicated numbers and letters combination will fix insecurity of device by default.

Solve : Severe ping spikes but no packet loss?

Answer»

Hello,

Recently (Past 3-4 weeks) I have been experiencing extreme lag spikes and internet speed drops whilst streaming, browsing pages, playing games, ect.

As you can expect, it's detrimental to whatever I'm doing. The ping spikes started with a relatively low frequency, maybe 2-3 times over the course of a night.

However now they're multiple times per hour with the internet dropping and going into local mode extremely often, I don't have a clue about computers or internets and am so puzzled. I am with TalkTalk as an ISP, and these spikes happen all the time, not just at peak times. I'm talking 3am, I'm sat with my ping ranging from 2ms to 7000ms.

I don't know what details you need to evaluate my problem or whatever so just let me know and I'll get hold of them for you. The obvious thing is to call my ISP but of course I have, they SEE no problem with the line and area that I'm in and don't know why it's happening, they want me to pay £50 to have someone come look at it and bun that!

I have a few ping results to show for so here they are:

Are you connected directly to the TalkTalk provided modem, or do you also have a router?
What make and model is your modem, and router if you have one?

Connected directly to the talktalk modem and I will find out in a few minutes for you, bear with me!It says on the router (when i say router I mean the box that talktalk gave us with the flashing lights like LAN INTERNET ect.):

"Broadband wireless NADSL2A"
and
"Huawei HG533"Wow...first result searching for that model number brings up the Talktalk labs page, where they report a set of known issues - have a look. Based on that alone, I would say that Talktalk are doing the classic thing of giving out not very good modem/router combinations, and then blaming the customer when they have a miserable experience of their network.
In other words, this is almost certainly an issue with their kit, if you call them out they may try and charge you but don't let them do it, because there's no way this can be your fault. Have a look on the Talktalk website, or ask support to direct you to see if there's a firmware update available, this may help.
If there's no update available, you have two options going forward. Either call them out and hope they will eventually resolve the issue (sometimes they can, sometimes they can't or won't) or buy yourself a new modem/router box. If you go the second route, you'll almost certainly see increased performance and stability, and especially better wireless range and stability. Obviously, there's a cost involved in buying a decent box, like a Billion 7800N or Asus N55U, but in my opinion it's worth it. When I was stuck on DSL, I dumped their box right away, it was awful. Since about 2006 I've been on cable and also USED my own router, but from what I've seen and heard from friends and family on DSL the boxes they supply are almost universally terrible, and replacing it with a good combo usually improves reliability. Finally though, if you do decide to pick up a new box, you'd be best to check with Talktalk whether they will allow this. Recently my parents' neighbours asked me to pick them up a new modem/router, and after spending an hour or so myself and then a further hour on the phone with BT support, they concluded it just wasn't going to work with their service, and they didn't know why. The device should have been compatible and the configuration was correct, it just wouldn't actually make the connection. So, check with them first to make sure it'll work to avoid that stress. Thanks for that comprehensive answer Calum! I checked the known faults page and the intermittent loss of wireless connectivity sounds just like me! Don't know why it suddenly started happening though as was fine a few weeks ago.

I have found there is a firmware update available online but its a .bin file and I have no clue how to use one of those?!

I will look into new routers or modems or whatever it's called and do some research as to what works and what doesn't with talktalk, thanks very MUCH for your post.

+kudosGlad to have been of assistance

Quote
I have found there is a firmware update available online but its a .bin file and I have no clue how to use one of those?!
The most common method is to log in to the router's admin page, and there'll be a section in there, usually under admin tools or similar, to upload the firmware from your PC to the router and flash it. Talktalk should have provided you with some documentation for the router, which should give you the IP address to access the admin page, and where you'll find the username and password (it's often on the router itself, on a sticker). If you have any trouble, post back and I'll see if I can help.

Here's a list of their officially supported devices which won't cover every router that will work, and I suspect is mostly comprised of what they have supplied through the years. The Netgear DGN2000 listed there is a good box, although a little odler so I don't think you'd be able to buy a new one nowadays. I don't know much about the other boxes on that page.

Here's a useful page with the settings you would need, with a new box, to connect to the Talktalk network.*censored* TURNS out it's already on the latest version 1.14t

Solve : Need help connecting PC to internet!?

Answer»

My dad had a kind-of old Windows Xp-Pro computer. He got a laptop and gave the Desktop to me to put it in my room. The computer was connected to the internet for a long time, and I think it was plugged DIRECTLY into the phone jack. (With ONE of those special thing-es to alow the internet and phone to be used at the same time.) There is a Phone jack in my room, aswell as three standerd plugs. Also in my room is the internet router/modem, (Whatever you call it.) it plugs into the phone jack. There is also a wireless modem/router (Again, whatever you call it) that produces a internet connection that the laptop and MOBILE devices connect to. I also have the Ethernet (yellow) cable, and some cable with male USB on one end and female USB on the other end. (Yes, im 13 and I know what male and female USB is. DEAL WITH IT. ) But I think that cable was meant for the printer anyway. I have tried just about everthing, and I don't know how to connect this "device" to my computer via one of these cables. If more information is needed, thats ok.
Can anyone help? Is it GOING to be wired or wireless? I think since its a desktop, you would need the RJ-45 or the ethernet cable to be put in directly to your router and the other one at the back of your desktop. Otherwise, call your dad.

Solve : number of links not affecting transmission time in a circuit-switched network ??

Answer»

Quote

Suppose that all links in the network use TDM with 24 slots and
have a BIT rate of 1.536 Mbps. Also suppose that it takes 500 msec to establish an
end-to-end circuit before Host A can begin to transmit the file. How long does it take
to send the file? Each circuit has a transmission rate of ( 1.536 Mbps)/24 = 64 kbps,
so it takes (640,000 BITS)/(64 kbps) = 10 seconds to transmit the file. To this 10 seconds we add the circuit establishment TIME, giving 10.5 seconds to send the file.
Note that the transmission time is independent of the number of links: The transmission time WOULD be 10 seconds if the end-to-end circuit passed through one link or a hundred links.

Why does the number of links not affect the transmission time ?

Thanks.

I think you mean TDMA. Right?

Either it has 24 slots or is is not.
Read over the definition of TDM.
Simple TDM is not a dynamic system.
But if is, it is not.

Better systems use a more complex protocol. But if you don't need it, you don't do it. The idea is to deliver just what is needed, not more.

Piratical example. Some 48 people decide that maybe they want to have 24 conversations. Possibly all at the same time. But now always. So they invest in a communication system that can PROVIDE 24 voice channels using TDMA. The quality is good voice quality. They have no intention of sending video or any pictures ever. Just conversation when they want. They do not want to share their system with anybody. Never. So they install simple TDMA. They get what they pay for. Up to 24 conversations whenever they want. The system is private. Nobody else is on it. They like simple plain TDMA. Nothing else.

Solve : internet sharing?

Hi, can anyone help me,im using linksys x2000 router, on first use i automatically create a main network for me an a guest account. now the problem is, when someone in the guest account is logged in, and im playing online game like league of LEGENDS, when then user in the guest account is watching a video on youtube, or accessing a web that loads lots of images, my ping on my game suddenly turns high. and when browsing my browsing speed is too slow when user from the guest account are streaming videos, is there a way that i can play games and browse the internet without being affected by the users from the guest account? Wired connection is always preferred and set a limit of BANDWITH for the guest account if the router has this feature or use a software bandwith limiter. Check the router settings or menus for a Qos feature which is used to improve your connection speed. My Router doesnt have a feature to limit bandwidth, so I used old technology to bottleneck my wifes computer with a 10mbps switch. My bandwidth is 20mbps down and 12mbps up. With the 10mbps old switch in between my Router and my wifes computer, she has no clue that I have her bottlenecked and my QoS doesnt degrade when she is doing her Netflix etc.. So if your device doesnt have a way to throttle bandwidth, and you have an old 10mbps switch or hub to place between your router and your guest... you can set them to a maximum bandwidth that is lesser than your actual maximum bandwidth if your actual bandwidth is greater than 10mbps download. Glad I didnt throw away the old switch that was too slow for my needs. Come to find it it can STILL serve a purpose.. my router has QoS feature tried modifying it but still but putting my laptop to high priority and putting one of my guest users into low priority, but still having issues when we are both connected and the user is streaming videos online.or browsing site with lots of images to load.like facebook. Its been over 2 weeks, but saw that this might still be OPEN if your still checking on it. I am curious as to how much bandwidth you have with your ISP www.speedtest.net

I am thinking that if you are already starving for bandwidth maybe in which QoS wont help much.

Solve : need help. wifi not connecting?

Answer»

hello. I hace a linksys wifi and RAN into some problems that I can't seem to figure out.
Yesterday I was trying to hook a laptop to the internet. It wouldn't allow me to connect to the wifi, giving me a error message, something like, you do not have the correct settings or something.
so i hook it up wired, to google the problem. while I am doing this my PS3 is wifi connects and watching netflix just fine.
A few minutes of surfing and it disconnects me from internet on my PS3. Same for the PS3 in the other room.
Since then I have not been ABLE to access any wifi. not on either ps3 or on the ipod.
I keep putting in the WEP code things but it just acts like there is no signal, even though the ps3 says it has a signal strength of 90% and the laptop sees it as well but won't connect.

Any thoughts on what is wrong? I tried unplugging everything and left it all unplugged over night. I pushed the little reset button on the Linksys, can't figure out what is wrong. So this is a new problem? Did you already

  • Turn off the modem/router for 3 minutes.
  • Turn non and off all you devices.
  • Call your service company.
Is this Cable, DSL, Microwave or Satellite service?
^If the above doesnt work.

Try converting your wep to WPA.

Its much easier to connect to and it usually fixes the issue.

Also change your channel as well.

Sometimes if it is on automatic it can cause issues, try channel 1, 7, or 11.

Let us KNOW the results!I posted this link elsewhere. I repeat it here to help others with wireless problems. In some not so rare cases you can not use Wi-F ™ as you want.
The page is from HP . (Requires PDF reader.)
http://www.hp.com/rnd/library/pdf/WiFi_Bluetooth_coexistance.pdf
The issue BIS not just Bluetooth. The Wi-F ™ system is subject to interference. The problem will not get better until the FCC and the industry introduce better stuff for civilian use. Meanwhile, you can try to make it work for you.

Try a traceroute to www.google.com which is in your back yard pretty much vs to England. I use to have nasty latency like this between myself in NH, USA and a friend who was in Australia with online gaming and Vent communications would lag in addition to their character running around, sometimes running in place etc until the packets caught up.

Distance = LAG due to the many hops between California and England as well as the speed of signals slightly SLOWER than the speed of light whereever fiber optics are not used between California and England, and whereever the light transmitted on fiber channels are converted back and forth to electronic signals during conversion process.

If www.google.com is crappy then its a real problem, otherwise its common lag due to the distance factor. To Australia sometimes lag/latency would go upwards of 600 to 1200ms, but most of the time it was 200 to 450ms.

i dont know how to fix this..
Ok so the problem is within the USA... getting closer to solution then. Is this DSL or Cable Broadband? Have you rebooted modem/router etc and retested against www.google.com

You could also try using an OpenDNS IP address as your DNS resolver to bypass your ISP's DNS's. You can register and get a free OpenDNS IP that is close by and that might help.

You can also always call up your ISP and request a loopback test in which they query your modem from their end and verify that the signal between your ISP and your modem is good or requires a technician to add a filter to it etc.

When I first got broadband my connection was crappy. They performed a loopback test and confirmed that there was a problem. Technician came the next day and ended up running a new cable to my house since the old cable I had been using for broadband was 1985 era coax and there was too much signal loss. Technician was amazed that my motorola surfboard modem was even able to handshake with such a weak signal. Ever since they installed new cable to house from pole connection I have had very reliable and fast response times.it is Cable Broadband! And over the month I've called TimeWarner countless of times and they said the modem was working fine even though my ping test showed otherwise. We did the ping test together but on their end they said nothing was wrong. So we did call a technician and he said all the connection is fine and all they did was continually change the modem and the problem was the same for every modem they brought. Would using the OpenDnsIP address help alot? and how would u do it?
windows 7 by the way!

*i did try the open dns server. It helped a little bit but still immense spikes..Also my internet became like his all of a sudden so i dont know the problem at all..Quote

*i did try the open dns server. It helped a little bit but still immense spikes..

Have you tried a different computer here. If you dont have a 2nd computer maybe a friend has a laptop they can connect via Cat5 to your internet connection and run the same ping test to www.google.com and see if you get the same results or not.

I am willing to bet its the ISP, and the other computer will show the same issue, but with few options left, this might be one you haven't tried yet to pinpoint the cause.

*Edit: Just thought... Only other part of this equation I just thought that could affect you with bandwidth and latency is if you have a wireless router connected that is open ( not secured ) and someone else is connected to it and downloading lots of data all the time etc. Test for this would be if the activity LED on the router/modem is blinking like crazy with your computer shut off. If you find this to be the case, then you will have to secure your wifi so that its not open for unwanted neighbors to ride on in for free etc. (( Your ISP would not be able to detect this, and it would cause these symptoms ))

A friend of mine who lives in PA also has Time Warner and she is not happy with their internet service, but where she is at, its either that or dial-up and she cant go backwards to dial-up. Her home is out in Western PA surrounded by farmland. Not sure what your options are for ISP's out your way. Her problem is that she will be gaming online and get disconnected at times, and her connection to the internet is slow.i dont have a router because the modem already has a built in wifi but another sympotm is that it always starts to lag after 8 o clock and when i checked the internet every hour, the ping returned to normal around 12 am ~ 1 am is there a solution to that? A laptop is connected to our modem but it still gets the same problems as i do.
and our connection in our house is

modem > 3 switches > then to computers

and our wifi is secured and it alwaaays happens to be around 8 o clock that it starts lagging

edit: actually it has nothing to do with time...Do you have any neighbors who also have this same service that you can compare against to rule out either ISP issue or issue with bad service to home? Maybe have them run a ping at the same time and see if you have same or mixed results to move closer to knowing where the problem is located?

Solve : Website hosting (wordpress blog)?

Answer»

I have a website up and running fine. Recently, a sub-domain has been created. I want it to map to my wordpress blog..
It prompts something to pay to get things done..
I tried with google blogger and its awesome, it was live on web in less than a day time..

now my moot point is why wordpress charges for simple domain mapping WHEREAS google blogger provides the same mechanism for free?
Is there a way i map it for no charges?
Some more details would help.
Are you the owner of the domain? A domain with cost you about #10 per year. and web space about $24 per year. Or less if for light traffic.
Please clarify.
Are you using WordPress on WordPress.org
OR
Are you running a free WordPress install on a Web Host with Cpanel?

My blog is all free. I paid for a domain and web space. I did not have to pay ANYTHING to WordPress. I have not tried using a sub-domain, but I don't see any reason it wold not work. The vlog is on a sub directory of the domain.

I don't understand what WordPress is changing. If you have your own site, everything be in the package.

Also, on the WordPress.org site I has a sub-domain that was free. But it is an independent blog and not part of the blog on my own web apse. Quote from: Arjun N.Tej on July 04, 2013, 08:17:16 AM

Your google blog shows google in the web address where it's located, right? Is that acceptable to you or do you want a more person address to your blog, such as mysite.com/myblog? Hosting from home is quite cool to play with but I don't really feel it's worth it for any production sites. Most residential connections have very low upload speeds compared, then you need to work around dynamic IP addresses.etc.

I have a small home server (Atom D525) that doens't really host any websites but the power consumption of that costs substantially more alone compared to a cheap web hosting package.

That is why I ended up collocating my main server to a datacenter - Cost of electricity, painful upload speed and a single dynamic IP.Quote from: camerongray on July 18, 2013, 06:28:09 AM

You raise a really interesting point.

Atom-based - so we're looking at a nettop or something similar running off a power brick? You'd be drawing a maximum of 5A - let's say a generous 100W. Cost per KWh is in the order of 15p or so in the UK, but let's say 20p. So that's 2p/h. £15 a month or less.

Rackspace's Cloud servers start at 2p/h, so on face value that's comparable on price. For that 2p/h, you get 512MB RAM and 20GB disk.

Ah, but you must add 8p/GB monthly for upstream bandwidth. And if you want to take backups, you have to pay for storage (starting at 7p per GB per month). Hardware firewall is extra (starting at £14 pcm). And so on.

With my server based at home, I can serve files on my LAN at LAN-side speeds (most important for video streaming). I can spin up and spin down new virtual servers as and when I want, without paying anything extra. I've mirrored the server to another server off-site, so I have DR plus failover capabilities, plus off-site backup. Yes, I'm responsible for the hardware, but the benefit is extreme flexibility. I'm limited by my upstream bandwidth, but by the time I have enough traffic to cause a bottleneck, I expect any websites to be paying for the cost of a synchronous fibre CIRCUIT (and then some).

If you're capable of running a home-based server, it's well worth the learning experience. And if that's too intimidating, something like a Synology NAS box can do much of the above at a low entry price with a very shallow learning curve.@Rob Pomeroy

Rob, I've just lately got some "occupational" varifocals - optimised (lower) for reading books, etc in the hand or on a desk, and (upper) using a monitor, and I thought I was getting on OK, but boy does your geek-and-dummy site play *censored* with my eyes! It's the white font on a black background MAINLY. I'll maybe dial down the contrast on the monitor.

It's a small custom built machine in an ITX server case with a MicroATX FSP PSU. Pulls 38w from the wall.

I worked it out to cost around £5/mo where a cheap web hosting plan can cost less. Obviously the server can do a lot more for the money, but it's overkill for a wordpress blog. The main issue is residential broadband connections really aren't fast enough to compete with a proper web host. Not to mention that some residential ISPs do not allow the hosting of webservers over their connections.

Obviously for anything more than a basic site you will need dedicated hardware, for that I have a colocated machine where I run everything in virtual machines. Cost wise the colocation is very good compared to hosting from home as it includes the power, cooling and a very high end gigabit network connection. Many, many companies offer web-hosting for a domain name. The typical cost is most often between $2 to $9 per month on a one year contract. You will have about 500 MB of disk space on a server shared with others, but you own private user area.

My WordPress blog is running most of the time. THEE are outages because it is a cheap service. But goo enough for me.

Still, I don't get why the sub-domain is and issue. I have a domain on a sub-domain and not issue about paying anything more.

What am I missing? Why is using a sub-domain important?

Solve : Irregular ping and lag spikes?

Answer»

Hello,

Lately I've been experiencing some serious internet related problems, being high lag spikes (constant 30ms shoots to 150+ for a second or 10, repeated every 40 seconds or so) and irregular connection (being a constant ping of... let's say numbers you'd not believe). I have already figured out it's an intern problem, as both my LAN PC and my wireless laptops have no internet problems. I've already replaced my network adapter (by an USB one, to make place for a second vid card), and that hasn't resolved anything either. I've run a Ping Monitor gadget in Win7 to visualise the problem:

My connection being irregular: http://gyazo.com/df4460f87de77e6f18a2417c9f1c0b0c
Lag spikes on a regular base: http://gyazo.com/f5bbf9c31959bfaa204b8a332e232143

I have run a network monitor capture during one of the lag spikes, which looked like this: http://gyazo.com/6874b1471ff7bd08e495ab73d34ce171 (the object beneath it was "other trafic", which was empty for those wondering)

A system scan with Malwarebytes Antivirus says there are no malicious items detected, and important to note as well, is that there are no programs that raise in either connectivity usage or CPU usage (in Task Manager)

I run a 64-bit windows 7 OS on a 64-bit compound PC with a Netgear networking adapter, any further hardware or software related specifications will be included upon request.

My sincere apologies for any spelling or grammatical mistakes made, or any missing specifications, I will anything that's necessary at all costs.

Thanks for reading, and in advance for a plausible answer,

AciebelPlease provide information about your computer.
Can you duplicate the symptoms with just one PC connected directly to the modem? This would help identify the issue as being local or being in the modem and/or Service Provider. Who is your service provider? If it is a satellite system, expect latency issues.

This is not a chart room, so hours may pass before I get back to you. So here is a other thing. Can you do networking in Safe mode? And do you have a Live Boot CD that will bring up a Linux system that can get internet via your modem? Recent versions of Ubuntu and Linux Mint should work in 32 bit mode with no problems.

In other words, can you rule out the service provider as being the source of the problem. Booting into another OS should help.
Also, NICs are now very cheap and it is good to have a spare on hand.
Thanks for you quick response, I have a compound PC so I will specify what I think could be useful to know. It has an AMD FX-8150-Eight-Core Processor, with 16GB RAM, a Corsair Neutrom SSD drive of 64GB containing my OS (Win7 Ultimate 64-bit), a WDC wd10ears HDD of a Terrabyte and 2 crossfired AMD Radeon HD 6800 series video cards (my apologies if I'm forgetting something I haven't MENTIONED in either of my posts). I will test if the problem still exists when I connect my computer to my router via LAN. I will also try running a virtual OS of Linux from a USB drive to see if the problem's not OS-related ("reinstall windows, that usually does it" - lostcoast), and I will connect to my neighbours network through wireless to see if the problem LIES with the computer or the router (don't tell them, they don't have to know ).

I will keep you and everyone involved up to date, and thus will fill this post with more information somewhere within the upcoming 24 hours. Thank you again for your quick response and your time!

AciebelThere would be USUAL lag spikes when on wireless considering the distance and INTERFERENCES on specific coverages for both the router and your wireless card/adapter. Check for any recent drivers and firmware for your router and card also just in case. But most likely a wired connection would solve your problem.Fixed itself, for some reason the problem is gone...
Thanks for all the help, though!

My modem is Cisco 2100: http://www.cisco.com/web/consumer/support/modem_DPC2100.html#~userguides

When I run the modem straight to the desktop I have internet. When I add the router, I lose my internet to the desktop computer which is wired. The router works fine when it's connected, the problem is there's no internet. Again, with no router I have internet, with the router, no internet. I assume for both CONFIGURATIONS you are using the ethernet port on the modem & not the USB port?Yes, I'm using the ethernet port on the modem. 1. Bad cable from router to modem.
2. WAN port on router is dead.

I assume the yellow port (WAN) on the router is the one you are connecting to the modem?
I started this thread the last time I had a problem with the router which was the 13th, one week ago. Since that time the router has worked fine. But last night it happened again. I didn't call the cable company but RAN my modem straight to my desktop and the internet worked. I tried re-powering the modem and router in all DIFFERENT orders and combinations many times without results. Now, 12 hours later, I turned everything on and it's all working fine now with the router connected. On one occasion when I was on the phone with the cable company, they said something about the network not seeing my router.

This is a crazy intermittent problem happening at about once a week. Any THOUGHTS? If I buy an ethernet y-cable and run that from the modem-one to my desktop, one to the router, would that do anything? I add that because when I bypass the router I get internet.I assume the yellow port (WAN) on the router is the one you are connecting to the modem?Quote

I assume the yellow port (WAN) on the router is the one you are connecting to the modem?

Yes.

Do you have any other suggestions besides the cables being plugged in wrong?
Seems like something is wrong with the router.

Solve : LAN Settings Revert Immediately After Change?

Answer»

Hey guys, I have been looking everywhere for someone to help my and I figured that this might be the place.
I have been having problems with my STEAM and Origin where they get errors for different things. I have done my research and know exactly how to fix this but there seems to be a hitch.
The solution for EVERYONE seems to be to go to Internet Properties -> Connections -> LAN Settings then, in LAN Settings, clear every box and uncheck every box. I can and have done all of these things but as soon as I hit the "Ok" button to apply the changes, they revert to the way they were. All I need is for these boxes and fields to stay empty.
In my "LAN Settings", the box that ALWAYS re-checks itself is the "USE automatic configuration script". It every video and forum post that I have seen, this is the one that is checked but for the person demonstrating what to do, when they uncheck it, it stays unchecked.

I know that this would work if only it didn't constantly revert itself.

Please try to help,
Cam.

Solve : HELP-New router hook up problems. Wireless Network Connection doesn't have valid?

Answer»

To anybody that could help me!

Thanks in advance.

My employer was bought out and in the process they re-did / bought all new computer stuff and got rid off all the old. I was able to take the old wireless router home and want to use it. However I can not get it to WORK and I know it works fine.

It is a Linksys Compact Wireless-G Broadband router. I get my internet form Comcast via the cable.

It fires up fine, password goes in well and then I get the "Wireless Network Connection doesn't have valid IP configuration" message. My computer is a Dell Inspiron with windows 7.

Help.... Perform hard reset on router.
http://www.wikihow.com/Reset-a-Linksys-RouterYeah did the reset button on the back of the router and all it really did was reset the password....Did the Wikihow stuff-Hard and Soft start...still nothing. It shows up on my comuter as great service, but says no internet service. It just seems like the router and computer are not commmuncating..Are you using the Linksys Router as your main modem/router or is it CONNECTED by your Comcast modem? Please post the complete Linksys Router model next time.I am using the Linksys (model #WRT54GC) as the router. The modem is th RCA ONE that Comacast has installed.

Thanks Jason!I think the RCA modem (Coaxial to USB) will not match with the Linksys router ethernet or ports available. It's either you will upgrade to a DSL modem with an ethernet port or you will be stuck with just an outdated modem device.Dont tell me that That is essentially how I have the modem and router set up. However, I don't run an Ethernet cord to a tower. I just run the wireless router to provide the signal for my laptop. Many companies turn off wireless inside the router. Connect it wired so you can access all the settings from your browser.
Linksys router is: http://192.168.1.1/
Cable modem is: http://192.168.100.1/Quote

I think the RCA modem (Coaxial to USB)
If you have the same ethernet ports as opposed to my previous post of a USB which I must have be looking on much older modems PRIOR, then you would be able to use the linksys wireless router for your Dell inspiron. Check the linksys router's DHCP server is enabled and leave all settings by default. The computer's WIFI adapter must also be set in DHCP. http://homekb.cisco.com/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=80&login=1&app=search&vw=1&articleid=5450

You can configure the security password for the wifi later after you get a successful connection. You must be connected by wired first as CC mentioned to check on these settings.

Solve : Can Cable modem be used as LAN hub?

Answer»

I have been given a new Netgear cable modem (supplied by Virgin I think). Could I use it as a LAN HUB? It has an RJ45 connector labelled 'internet' and four outputs.

Art You can TRY it if the settings would be ISP modem - ROUTER - Netgear modem /router or ISP modem/router to Netgear modem/router. http://www.wikihow.com/Connect-One-Router-to-Another-to-Expand-a-NetworkJason,

Yes, that would be the plan. Thanks

ArtIf this is a Virginmedia UK "Superhub" then these are INDEED MADE by Netgear but with custom Virgin firmware. There may be a difficulty because the ones supplied to Virgin customers in connection with a cable internet contract remain Virgin property and it is not legally open to the customer to give the equipment away or sell it. Upon cessation of a contract the device should be returned and you may not have the legal right to use it. It would be interesting to know how it was acquired.

Solve : Mirror FTP directory to Flash Drive??

Answer»

Hello;

I work in a break-fix repair SHOP. My CO workers are idiots, and I USUALLY end up picking up the slack. As such, (to make it a little easier on me) I have provided each of them with a flash drive with some useful repair TOOLS. Usually, this means I also end up maintaining them as well when new versions/updates are released, or when I WANT to add a new tool to the library.

What I would like to do is simply set up an FTP directory with what I want to be on their drives, and maintain only that directory.

To do this I need a very simple, "set and forget" solution or portable program that can be run from the flash drives. What I want this program to do is (after being configured) be a "1-click" solution (as to not confuse my co workers) to check the remote FTP directory, and mirror that directory on the flash drives; deleting, updating, and creating new folders/downloading files as necessary WITHOUT deleting everything off the flash drive and re downloading the full FTP directory. (IE - Only downloading new/change files and folders, while deleting anything present on the flash drive but not present on the FTP directory).

If you know of any such solution program that has a simple interface and is portable, I would be very appreciative. I have tried out many programs searching for this. Most aren't simple enough or only offer backing up TO the FTP server, not the reverse.

I do not mind paying for the software.

Thank you,
DIatech

Solve : Created my 1st home network to share printer. How secure is this setup??

Answer»

I've never tried to set up a home network before and I may have made some mistakes. But the main intention was to be able to print to my HP usb printer via either of 2 laptops (HP 2000 / Windows 7 and HP 6715b / Windows Vista) on this wireless 802.11n network. I did finally accomplish this but I'm WORRIED that I may have compromised security between me and several close neighbors. I have an AT&T U-Verse wireless primary router with a Belkin router hard wired to that. I'm using the Belkin router for these wireless networks including internet access. I have them set to "Private Network" and all file and print sharing is set for on with no password required. Is the WPA2 security on the AT&T router and WPA2 security on the Belkin router enough for me to be secure from outside threats? I'm running COMODO firewall on both machines with Windows firewall turned off.
Just want to check with you guru's about this since I know very little about networking.
I'll attach a network map and network sharing center list for both machines in case that helps here.
As always; thanks for any HELP!!!

WPA2 is pretty good, much better than WEP or no security at all. Anyone wanting to get into a network wardriving is going to look for open wifi without security or WEP which is easy to crack.

Unless you need file sharing, I'd shut that off. But good JOB in making it WORK with WPA2 security enabled for first home network printer share. Thanks for the response DaveLembke!
I took me a couple of days and several failures to get this done and I didn't really keep a record of what actions I took. But it's working fine to print wireless from either PC so that's good. I'll likely have some more questions but I was mainly concerned with the way the map viewed on the Windows 7 / HP2000 machine (1st attachment in my first post) shows the location of the HP6715b machine twice, once behind the Belikin router and also again between the Bekin router and the internet. Why does it show that machine twice and why is one of those locations shown in front if the Belkin router?
Thanks again for the help!

Solve : Crazy problem with dropped connection between PC and Apple Airport Express?

Answer»

I have an issue with using my Apple AIRPORT Express that is driving me nuts. I use my Airport Express to wirelessly play music to my receiver. I don't use it to extend the NETWORK or any of those other uses.

For two years, everything worked fine between my Windows PC and my Apple Airport Express. My computer could play songs to my Airport Express wirelessly, and I could load the Remote app on my iPhone and control the songs that iTunes would play, on my computer. Four months ago, the computer stopped "seeing" the Airport Express, and my iPhone could no longer locate the iTunes library on the computer. All the meanwhile, my spare laptop (which I was just using for testing of this issue, as it's too old and slow for my music use) could operate just fine with the Airport and iPhone with Remote.

I picked up a new PC to replace the aging one, and figured it would also fix my music issues as well. Well, it only fixed it in a very temporary and frustrating way. Now, when the PC loads up, it sees the Airport Express and I can use Remote on my iPhone, and I can play music across the network with it all just like I should be able to. Then, anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours later, it all stops working. The Airport Express option on iTunes goes GRAYED out. The Airport Utility program can no longer find the Airport Express. My iPhone can no longer find my iTunes library with Remote. But, if I reset the computer, it all works perfectly again, until it randomly fails whenever it feels like it. It never continues to work for more than a few hours.

Through all this, if I load up my old laptop, it works fine. So, to me, it's not like the Aiport Express is "going down". Also, the Airport Express has NOTHING to do with my iPhone and the Remote app finding my iTunes library on th ePC, so the fact that BOTH of these things stop working makes me think it's something to do with the PC or the PC connection to my network.

FYI, it seems to make no difference whether my PC is connected with a CAT5 or with the built in wireless.

My old PC and this new one both have Norton, but I've tried disabling everything and I don't see a difference. Maybe I need to dig into this more, but it's strange that Norton would let it all work for a while, then stop it.

Another fact LEADING me to believe the Airport Express is fine is that my iPhone has apps like Pandora and Songza that can play music either through the iPhone itself, or, send it to the Airport Express. I am ALWAYS able to select the Aiport Express. It is never "down" or not selectable..

New PC is Windows 8 with Norton installed. Network is through FiOS and their Actiontec router. Let me know if you need any other info or testing.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Have you checked to make sure that you're using the latest version of iTunes and that your Airport Express is using the latest firmware?

I've never used an AirPort Express, so I can't think of much else to check.Yes, both are up to date fully.

One other observation I've noticed now:

After the computer disconnects from the Airport (i.e. if I look in iTunes, the airport speaker symbol is grayed out and only PC speakers are selectable), if I open Remote on my iPhone and click the aiport symbol in the Music player, it "revives" the airport express. The connection re-establishes, and the symbol becomes blue on the PC screen instantly. Somehow, doing this with the phone "re-links" the connection between PC and Airport Express...

Solve : Upsetting 'internet' problems?

Answer»

Last night i began to have PROBLEMS with anything considered internet. I am connected. I have tried with a piece of hardware and wi-fi. When I try to open Firefox (even Internet Explorer) they trigger the mouse hourglass but never open. This problem also goes for World of Warcraft and other such games. I am connected but they never load, only say loading or nothing at all.1) Do all other programs work normally?

2) What is new or different since the last TIME everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

3) Please run full system scans with BOTH your installed anti virus app and with MalwareBytesThanks for checking my problem out! This is a bit hard to explain. Now my internet browsers pop up but saying unable to connect or 'error'. I'm hoping you know what Steam is but I can LOG onto that and play my games I have there. (Still unable to do any online content with the games). I have run a spyware SWEEP with norton and it found 12 threats and fixed 12 threats (this did not change anything) . I logged onto the other user account on said laptop and the browsers work fine. So I'm GUESSING it's just my usual user account i'm having trouble with. Also, the last thing I updated or changed was Norton required a restart yesterday (it's been bothering me a week to restart my laptop to apply the update) so i did last night.

Solve : Router won't portforward.?

Answer»

Hi every one. The REASON I'm here is because I'm exhausted every single thing I can do to fix this problem. I cannot for the life of me port forward, successfully peer to peer software called "Game Ranger". I've filled in the starting ports, ending ports, and server IP correctly. I have UPnP turned on, I've tried disabling NAT Filtering, disabling SPI Firewall, making my IP static, changing rules in firewall and changing to different routers. Furthermore, I have tried to see if the ports were working through "Portcheck" software and they weren't. I have no idea what is going and I've been going crazy trying to fix this for days. All I know is that Game Ranger says I'm behind a Symmetric NAT ROUTER.

Any help is appreciated. If you need any more information just let me know.

My router model is a Netgear RangeMax, WNDR3300.

I'm running windows 7.

ANTIVIRUS is TRENDMICRO TITANIUM. Some ISP's block certain ports. What ports are you using?

Solve : I am having trouble with connecting an Windows 7 to an Windows 2000 machine?

Answer»

Hi,

I have an Windows 7 laptop. I am tyrying to connect to a Windows 2000 machine. I go to Start and then type in the PC name of the Windows 2000 machine. First it would ask me for a user name. Then it would ask me for a password. My laptop has no password. The last few times that I tried to connect to the PC, it only asks me for my password. When I connect my PC to an XP machine, it does not asks a user name/password. What can I do so it doesnt ask for a user name/password when I try to connect to the Windows 2000 PC. And this PC is not listed under Network. So the only I can connect to this PC is by going to Start and then entering the PC name.Do you need bidirectional sharing or can a network share on Windows 2000 box work as a target location to share data between both systems?

If single-directional sharing is good enough you can create a share on the C: drive on the Windows 2000 system, and share it with everyone ( not very secure, but fine if on a private lan with no external threats ) and be able to ACCESS this share from the Windows 7 system via IP of the Windows 2000 system and share name such as \\192.168.1.7\share$

using the share name of share$ to make hidden with $ and using the actual IP of this system on your network VS 192.168.1.7 as I have shown as example.

This share can be the entire C: drive of the Windows 2000 system if you chose to create a root share vs just a specific folder on the C: drive of the Windows 2000 system.

Your Windows 7 system should then be able to read/write to the location on the Windows 2000 box as long as everyone has been set to read/write.

You can then drop files to this share from the Windows 7 machine to the Windows 2000 machine if needed since Windows 2000 accessing Windows 7 will be troublesome without killing security of Windows 7 I am guessing, as well as verifying that its only using IPv4 since Windows 2000 does not natively support IPv6. There is however limited IPv6 support as referenced here for Windows 2000 HTTP://www.dslreports.com/faq/12122 if you need to stick with IPv6 vs IPv4. I have not tested Windows 2000 Pro on IPv6. I stopped using Windows 2000 Pro about 4 years ago when I made the move to minimum Windows OS of Windows XP Pro for security patches and to continue to use software that no longer supported 2000 Pro in newer releases.

Solve : Confused?

Answer»

Hi, I have just bought a Motorola Surfboard extreme wireless cable modem gateway, model SBG6580. I have it working on my desktop but want to make my laptop wireless and private. I lost my CD to the modem so can anyone please walk me THRU MAKING my laptop wireless, thanks.http://www.motorola.com/on/demandware.static/Sites-Site/Sites-Motorola_US-Library/default/v1335985434876/Promotion/cross-sell/cable-modem/SURFboard_SBG6580_UserGuide.pdf?version=1,336,493,317,000
Above link is Manual for this which will help you CONNECT via wifi.

There is also this user guide:

http://www.motorola.com/staticfiles/Support/US-EN/Home-and-Office/Cable-Modems-and-Gateways/SBG6580-SURFboard-Wireless-Cable-Modem-Gateway/Documents/Static-Files/SURFboard_SBG6580_UserGuide.pdf

You will have to have a Cat5 cable available and connect to the modem with a computer via Cat5 cable. Then try to access it at its default IP address which might be http://192.168.1.1 which can be accessed by copy/paste or typing this into browser window. If modem is at this IP address you will be brought to a page requiring a username and password. If you haven't changed this information it will be the default username and password. This will be in the manual and sometimes is stated onthe label on the modem. Once you are able to log into the modem, the first step is to change the password and write down what you are changing it to someplace safe. I use a permanent marker and write the new password on bottom of my router/modem etc. Next change its name from Motorola etc to something else, such as I named mine BlackBox to identify my wireless network from everyone elses in neighborhood. Next follow the instructions in the manual to create your wireless network. Once you have create a wireless network which hopefully is WEP at most minimum security with WPA being far better for security, you should be able to then search for wireless networks with your laptop. If you named yours BlackBox and you detect it when searching for wireless networks, select that and select to connect to it. You will then if youproperly secured it be required to enter a key etc to authenticate the laptopto your wireless network and each time you turn on your laptop from then on, it will search for this wifi after windows boots up, and you should no longer be prompted to have to bother with this again, as long as nothing changes on your modem in REGARDS to configuration. Thanks for the reply and help.

Solve : Having problems loading pages in all browsers?

Answer»

Not sure if this is the right forum.

Over the past week or so I am having problems loading PAGES. Not every single time, but at LEAST half the time I get "Server not found". I sometimes have to refresh half a dozen times of more to get the page to load, and even the first time usually the style sheets don't load and I have to refresh again. Sometimes they never load. Other times they load on the first try.

This is happening in all browsers but I reinstalled Firefox anyway to no avail. I have checked my bandwidth and it is were it's supposed to be - 10 mbs. I have naturally cleared all cookies, cache, browsing history. I have disabled all my add ons and in fact I rest the entire firefox browser to its original state and started all over with no addons. Still having the same problem.

I run AVG antiviris every day and nothing ever comes up as suspicions.

Could this be a virus? I can't think of anything else. OK. But we need another detail.
How do you get into the WWW?
Are you using:
1. DSL, also called ADSL
2. Cable
3. Satellite
4. Fiber Optic
5 You business WAN

Is some area the DSL service from great to horrible and varies from one day to the next. As for the others, my personal knowledge is limited.

I do use DSL, CenturyLink to be exact. I've never had any problems in the past and I've had it for 4 years. I have reset the modem a number of times already. OK. You need to check with them and see if they have been having trouble. Local issues with the local telecom are among the most common "strange" resets. The modem does a forced reset when the line condition deteriorates. The problem MAY or may not be apparent when listening to voice over the TELEPHONE.

In some areas the phone lines are being replaced by the local companies. Thye do this without notice if the outage is very short. In some cases the local telecom might have a tech swap you pair with another, but the other pair has not been swept for DSL service. It happens.

Also, have you added any new devices to your telephone line? Some cordless phones may cause problems.
Have you changed any electrical wiring in your home? Even extension cords?
A DSL modem has to have a ground return through the electrical system. If the ground return opens, additional NOISE gets on the telephone line.

As a last resort, get another modem. But not until you eliminate the other possible issues. My guess is the local Telco is messing up things.

OK. You need to check with them and see if they have been having trouble.

I called the telco and they said there was no disruption in the lines. I'm starting to think that I either have spyware or a virus. I run anitvirus every day (AVG and updated). I run spyware removal every so often, but every time I run it, it never shows that I have any. Could the spyware removal not be working right? The issue may as Geek has stated be related to your DSL ISP or even as a result of a malicious infection. However not knowing what other browsers you may have tried (as most of your references are to Firefox) i would like you to try Opera and report back your results.truenorthThe browsers I have used are Firefox, IE, Opera, Safari for windows. I have not tried Chrome because it will not boot for some reason.

I found another guy in another forum who had the same problem as me and he said he reinstalled AVG, but I tried that and it didn't work. So I installed another antivirus, Microsoft Security Essentials. I did a full scan and nothing came up. Well unfortunately it has been shown many time from the experience of other forum members that it remains possible that even after the useage/scan of your virus program and/or malwarebytes that malicious infections can still be present. I would urge you at this point to post your issue on the CH virus/malware forum and the experts there will try to assist you. Unlike the other CH forums only specialist with much knowledge and experience can offer help there. Once started be thorough and patient as the process can be lengthy. good luck, truenorth Thank you for your input. One last shot.
Do you have another PC or laptop that works just fine on your DSL?
If not, Here s an alternative way to test the DSL.

Get one of the recent distros of Linux that run right from the CD. Such live distros bet into the internet using your Ethernet connection. Some even work with wireless.

The browser in Linux us often Firefox. Or maybe Opera. Now if you can get a good usable internet connection using Linux, it would mean the DSL if OK and your problem is with Windows.

That has worked for many as a diagnostic tool. I am not saying you have to go to Linux, just use one of the "live" distros to verify your DSL connection.

Solve : Wireless bridge not working with security?

Answer»

The setup:

Main router. Arris WTM652 (I.P. 192.168.2.1)

Bridge: Linksys WRT54-G (V8.0) (I.P. 192.168.2.2) flashed with v24 micro generic

Everything works fine as long as security is disabled for both devices.

I set them both with WPA-PSK and TKIP, same SSID name and password, and the Linksys is not speaking to the Arris, and neither is my laptop speaking to the Linksys when connected VIA cat5.

If I do a "HARD" 30 second reset on the Linksys, it reverts to default I.P. 192.168.1.1 and Xp communicates just fine.

I'm using XP and IE.

I'm obviously doing something wrong here and all help is appreciated.

THANKS...

Sorry, I am of little help. Best I can do is recommend the reading of this article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linksys_WRT54G_series
The article has many references to other sources of information.

Here is a You Tube video about using a wireless bridge.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWVPZSQqUZgMany thanks Geek-9pm. That wiki is the one I used in setting up. Guess I'll have to go over it again because I must have missed something and also take a look at the video; maybe the solution is there.

What I've done up to now is leave security disabled (yikes!) but as a stop-gap my SSID is not broadcast. Not much, but better than nothing and the bridge is WORKING like a charm.

Thanks again...If you do get it to work the way you want, please COME back and let others know there sis a way. I have given up trying to do it. I have some routers that can do it, but I have not had the time to get it to work. As far as I can tell, only a few special routers can do it right. You haven to have a pair of routers that work together swell.SOLVED!

The solution came about from reading this: http://www.andyfrank.com/blog/2012/03/wrt54g-wireless-bridge/

The juicy part is: "Using WPA2 Security
If your primary router is setup to use WPA2, and things didn’t work, you have a few options:

Drop to WEP security
Drop to WPA security
Enable WPA2 TKIP + AES support on primary router, WPA on secondary

So configure your primary router to use WPA2 TKIP + AES, then set the DD-WRT to use normal WPA security".

My setup is:

Primary router Arris Modem SSID Disabled
Security:
Mode: WPA/WPA2-PERSONAL (PSK)
Authentication: WPA-PSK
Encryption Technique: AES

Secondary router: Linksys WRT54-G SSID Disabled
Security:
Mode: WPA Personal
Authentication: TKIP+AES

Both modems using exactly the same network name and password.

Works just fine and security is enabled.

You might have to use trial/error (I was lucky, got it on the first try).

As usual, good note-taking is encouraged as you try options.

Many thanks to Geek-9pm for the inspiration...Thanks for sharing.

Whoever set up our system uses another program for settings of the router, check out dd-wrt.com

DD-WRT is free Linux-based firmware for several wireless routers, most notably the Linksys WRT54G (including the WRT54GL and WRT54GS)

Oh, Oh. I can't help you with dd-WRT. Maybe somebody else can.Can a Mod change the title of the thread to reflect expertise is required with DD-WRT?OK, he needs DD-WRT Help! Anybody out there?
Here is a recent post on another forum that is similar...
http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/254973-routing-dd-wrt-confusion-help-needed

Sorry that I can not help. I tried to learn DD-WRT once and got lost. I have to watch my blood pressure. So I sold the LinkSys router I had bought for that project.

Personally, it is better for me to buy a cheep used router rather that risk my blood pressure. Some of my pills at $30 a month. You get a cheap old wireless router on eBay for $25 with free SHIPPING.
Really! Just Google it can find cheap wireless routers that will work . I just now found 5 places that offer such cheap routers.

One was on Amazon.com: TRENDnet 300Mbps Wireless
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41Cf0fnuY1L._SL500_AA300_.jpg
Just a suggestion. I have found it EASIER to wit five days for a bit of hardware instead of wasting a week on something I can not understand.
That is the best I can offer.

Have you tried to connect your laptop directly to the modem and try to play that laggy game? I suspect you have a problem with your hub. Although you said that it works cause your wireless router is CONNECTED to it, you may need to replace it by a switch. It's not my hardware, so honestly I've no place replacing it, and IIRC the wireless router is BRAND new as of the change aforementioned multiple times.

I have not tried hooking right into the modem, would have to use another method to judge speed improvement as I KNOW that my computer is slightly underpowered for the game at hand.

Solve : how to use adsl modem+router as a router.?

Answer»

Hi all,

I have this MODEM "http://www.dlink.co.in/products/?pid=438" DSL-2520U ADSL2+ ETHERNET/USB COMBO ROUTER. This router works with a phone line. It was working fine with a phone link internet connection. Now I am have a broadband internet connection. The current internet connection only works on one single computer. If I need to use the internet on other computer I need to call the internet company and then they update the new computers MAC address and then it works.

Can I use this device with my broadband ? I do not have a phone line internet now. There is no port to input the broadband.

Please help.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]The posted network device might only work on the previous PROVIDER you used to have and such that its called PROPRIETARY to protect their product. You need to BUY the commercial or retail brands of routers to connect multiple devices in your home network.

Solve : What is physical process of opening a connection to the internet?

Answer»

I know a lot of this and how looked around, but I am finding a lot of bits and pieces. I am just missing some of the DETAILS. When I connect to my LAN (router) ------> wires-----> modem -----> ISP ----> DNS servers if need be -----> NAP if need be ----- alternate ISP (omittable) ----- alternate DNS server (omittable) -------> REMOTE server on internet.

info:
ISP is modern
router is 802.11n
default DNS is from ISP

To be speific,
How does the modem connect to the ISP? (cables, T3 line....etc.)
What are the mutiple buildings, ROUTERS, modems the connection goes through at the ISP?
If there's anything I messed up on add/modify.
via a wire to the trunk line in your area if digital cable ( which I'm assuming it is)

By the way, since you are using it for work, have you consulted your IT or NETWORK Admin in your office?

Please advise. Happy New Year!sounds like a DNS issue or some weirdness in your host file. there might be something on you network that acting as a dns server that conflicting with your routers dns settings. If its a SOHO (SMALL business small office) router-think linksys etc than i would refer to there website with specific model configuration provided byy them to ENSURE your current gateway is handeling dns and is setup correctly. Theres no universal SOLUTION to soho's cause there all different. Is there anything else on like old networking equipment? Does windows recognition your network? sorry if i confuse you as I'm just starting in networking and could be steering you wrong. I'm thinking its a config issue as mailo problly has its own resolution system programmed in the software and thus doesn't need dns to access web or POP3 or mail server.

Solve : Internet issues. Cant download anything or watch videos?

Answer»

I can no longer download anything. Downloads makes progress but then it says there is an error after a few seconds of downloading and it stops. Downloading anything, even Windows updates. Also, i'm assuming this is related, it will play a Youtube video for a few seconds, but then stop and never start again.
I have Windows 8 Pro 64bit, and the internet is a HOTSPOT from a tablet that's connected to 3g. I can download and watch videos fine on my really old XP COMPUTER connected to the same internet, but not on this one. Tried multiple browsers, but im assuming thats not the issue since Windows or adobe updates wont download without the error either. So yeah, i'm figuring something is wrong with the network on this computer for some reason, which is a home BUILT computer.
Please help, thanks.Hi and Happy New year!

Just a question... Aside from downloading issues, how's your browsing experience on your Windows 8? When browsing to social networking SITES, news sites, Google, etc, do you still encounter issues?

Please advise so other Computer Help experts can easily isolate your problem. Thank you.do you have these problems at home? Or is this a lab(shool/work) computer? Open PUBLIC networks are not verry stable places. You could be exsperiencing these issues simply from large network overhead. Plus the network admin may have some funky setting for the DMZ your on. have you run any tests like tracert/ipcongig. Also check to see if you have the latest flash or silverlight extensions in your browser especially if your getting high cpu ussage alerts from windows.
