Solve : Internet Connection Drops on XP?

Answer»

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop with Windows XP. I am able to connect to the router but every minute or so it will tell me Connection is limited or no connectivity, then reconnects with no problems. It ALSO does the same thing if I am USING a HARDLINE for internet. I am able to access the internet between the times that it does this. It is not the internet router because my desktop connects to the wifi and ethernet just fine, I have tested with one, the other, and both. Also I live in a fraternity house and my lap top is the only one that has this problem in the entire house. I also have trouble connecting to any internet on campus with wifi, it does the same thing.

One thing that makes it weird though is when I go HOME I am able to connect to the wifi there with 0 problems and it holds, and if I just close the laptop without shutting down, suddenly I am able to connect to any internet without problems even the internet at the house but once I shut the computer off this problem starts again unless I am at home.

I just need help finding out the problem and getting this to stop ASAP, please and thank youmay i ask if you already tried reformatting your PC??Your problem is probably too many wifi hot spots. A wireless nic will use the nearest connection. However, if it finds more than 1 hot spot it will "jump around" to the other ones. It's a slut, lol. So that is probably what you are experiencing. Every jump means it disconnects from the network you were on and needs to reconnect to the new one. Depending on what wifi settings you are using, xp or the nic's own settings, you'll have to change the settings to make sure it only uses your "preferred" network. I agree. If it is not the case try a continuous ping to when connection is breaking. Then try a trace-route to identify which hop is causing the problem. But you said you have the same problem in other places with this laptop. So try to format and see whether its OS matter. Quote from: jaulo on December 29, 2009, 11:38:45 AM

It is possible to tell windows to ignore all hotspots except for the one you want to connect to. BTW, why not use ethernet, is much bettter, faster speeds

Solve : Ping and "View workgroup computers" issues?

Answer»

There is computers A and B connected via a switch,
both have Win XP,
on both all firewalls (XP firewall, Norton 360 firewall) are totally SWITCHED off,
under System Properties/Computer Name both have "WORKGROUP" as workgroup,
under Local Are Connection/ TCPIP Properties, both have 192.168.1.1 as default gateway and IP Addresses are 192.168.1.31 and 32 correspondingly,
under Local Are Connection, File and Print Sharing ... is enabled for both.
Just in case, there is also a DSL modem connected to that switch, and both computers access Inet through that modem.
Now my ISSUES:
Comp A (.. .. .. 31) is able to ping the gateway (.. .. .. 1), loopback (127.0.0.1), itself (.. .. .. 31) and comp. B(.. .. .. 32).
However comb B (.. .. .. 32) is able to ping all mentioned above, except for comp A (.. .. .. 31) with "Request timed uot".
Also I'm unable to view "View workgroup computers" on comp. A (.. .. .. 31). Actually It's kind of intermittent. Once it works, next time doesn't. Couldn't work out the pattern so far.
Also comp. A is able to remote connect to B, but B is not.
Please advice what can cause this.
Regards0. Odd. It does seem to be an "odd" problem.

1. Ping. Successful "ping" would indicate physical and logical connectivity. I'd concentrate on resolving this issue first (even if you need to uninstall the Norton software to make it happen).
     a. Verify both computers are on the same network (basically ensure "subnet mask" is the same on both computers).
     b. Best guess would be "firewall" on computer A is blocking ICMP "ping" messages from computer B. Check the "firewalls" again (on both computers).
     c. Use "-w " switch with ping to increase "timeout" value; although it shouldn't be NECESSARY for a local area network path.
     d. Try a different "port" on the switch.
     e. Switch ethernet cables from computers to switch to see if problem follows the cable. (Yes, I saw both computers were able to successfully ping gateway - so this should be a useless test.)

2. Computer Browser Service. To view "workgroup" computers, ensure the "Computer Browser" service is running on at least one (or both) of the computers. If you run it on just one (to reduce network traffic), it should be the computer that is on all or most of the time. Otherwise it can take some time to rediscover and build the "master" browser list (of KNOWN "workgroup" computers).

3.  Reference(s):
     a. Troubleshooting File and Printer Sharing in Microsoft Windows XP
     b. File and Printer Sharing with Microsoft Windows
     c. Why Can't I See My Computer on the Network?
     d. Troubleshooting Computer Browsing on SOHO Networks with Microsoft Windows
     e. Computer Browsing for SOHO Networks with Microsoft Windows
I would check the cable connecting pc b. I once had an issue with 2 of my pcs where one would intermittently not be able to ping the other & not view workgroup. Turned out to be a bad cable. Have both your pcs ping the router. However, do it with the following command:

ping -t 192.168.1.1

This will ping the router from both pcs until stopped instead of the usual 4 pings. Let it run for about a minute. To stop it just press "ctrl+c". Then scroll through the pings and look for any "request timed out". Technically you shouldn't get any of these since the router is not being protected by a firewall and you said you have no problems pinging it. Although 1 or 2 request timed out will be okay you will want to see if pc b has more of these than pc a. This is a strange issue. If computer A can ping the router that means computer A is perfectly ok. Same rule applies to computer B. Check again IP address of both computer A and B. Check to confirm both PC's have sane subnet mask and default gateway.
If they are ok, it may be a cable issue. Try to replace cables and see. If it is not successful, try to change the router and check again.

Solve : DNS question?

Answer»

If my DNS server is local (my AT&T 2wire gateway is my dns server) is there a way to view its dns cache?

Like in windows, if you wish to view the dns cache of your machine you'd type: IPCONFIG /displaydns

But is there a way to view the dns cache, if the dns server is your Internet Gateway?

Why would you want to do this?

Just curious if it's possibleIf your ISP's SECURITY is setup right no.

Solve : Question on how to get emails from certain people to go in a certain location??

Hi Everyone,
I'm trying to figure out how exactly to get emails from certain people to GO into folders I have setup that I want them to automatically go to?
I keep looking all over and not sure where to go to do this function.
Thanks,

Well then the ANSWER to this

...is more than likely no.Right. If you were using a third party application such as Outlook to manage email accounts you could SET up rules. But if you are reading emails online via your browser I don't think there's anything you can do.Allan: Gmail has "filters" that allow you do do what the OP wants. But I don't know if other webclient does it. Just to answer to

Isn't all email read online? That is what I don't understand.
Like same as hotmail, you open the browser type in hotmail www.hotmail.com and then sign in the account.
Anyways, I've got folders setup that I want them to go in, but I don't know what else to do. At the moment they all keep GOING in my inbox, and some even keep going in the spam folder too.
No. Online email is a comparatively recent technology (hotmail, gmail, etc). What do you mean about it being recent? I have had like Hotmail since the 90's. So, the Internet has been around for a long time. Quote from: AmyR7 on January 09, 2010, 02:38:16 PM

You mean the late 90's.I said comparatively (meaning compared to other forms of email). Pop email has been around from the beginning. No, early 90's I've had one of my accounts for.
Even when I use Outlook Express though, we still have to be connected to the Internet to get the email. The address is just another way we can read the email.

Solve : Dilemma over the "Default SMTP Server"??

Answer»

Hello There!

OVERALL, 3 MAIL Accounts have been configured within Mozilla Thunderbird vide my ISP one(POP), Gmail(IMAP) & gmx.com(POP). How to decide that which one of the 3 respective SMTP Servers should be made the "Default SMTP Server"??

Secondly, what exactly one means by the "Default" SMTP Server?...because each of the Mail A/c ultimately uses its very own SMTP Server to deliver a Mail. Then, how does the question of "Default" arises over here? It just wants to know which of those will be used the most, or set up as an initial or primary account.Default SMTP server may have its own meaning in terms of how thudnerbird sends mail. For example, if you're default account is google then whenever you send mail it will use google to send email and ignore the others even though you may want to send email from another account. I have often OBSERVED that if "FROM:" address is suppose that of Gmail ID & the default SMTP Server is set to someone's else, then the 'Sent Mail' often LANDS in the JUNK Mail folder of the recipient!

Do both of these needs to be synchronous i.e. of the same service provider?

Solve : Laptop can't connect wirelessly & stops other computers accessing the net?

Answer»

I am unable to access web pages wirelessly with my laptop, ALTHOUGH I can with my netbook and two wired desktop connections. I am able to access webpages on the laptop with a wired connection, but only by going through a convoluted process. I have to go into the LAN settings before I try to access a web page, go into the Support tab, and repair the connection. After it repairs, I can access web pages – but I can’t get a wireless link going with the laptop.
If I do try to use the laptop wireless it disconnects all of the other internet connections, which are two desktop PCs and a netbook.
ADSL and PPP lights on my Netcomm NB5plus4 modem stay on, as do the lights on my Netgear WNR2000v1 router. However, if I turn off the modem and router and restart them, I quickly regain Internet access on any machine (apart from the laptop, wirelessly, of course).
At times, though not always, if I have the laptop wireless connection on, and start up the netbook, or vice versa, an error message appears on the machine that was started second saying that there is an IP address conflict with another computer on the network.

Solve : Cannot pass 3.5MB/s on a 54MB/s LAN transfer?

Answer»

Hi there everyone. I'm not sure if this is similar to the SATA standards or something, but on a cross computer file transfer, I cannot pass 3.5MB/s on my 54MB/s network. One computer is using an EnGenius 108MB/s wireless card, and the signal is said to be Excellent or good most of the time. The receiving computer is on a 100MB/s ethernet connection, all to the same 54MB/s router. So why can't I pass 3.5 MB/s?a network connection is measures in megabits; your wireless is likely 54mbps. a 54mbps transfer speed is  6.75 Megabytes per second. however, even under optimal conditions, there will be packet loss, and of course overhead from the operating system and transfer protocols and so forth; 3.5megabytes a second seems about average TAKING all this into account.Oh, ok. Now I've GOT a slightly different question for you;

The ACTUAL router is in a room next to the one the computer is in. The rooms a SEPARATED by a wall, but it's only drywall since the router's room is unfinished. Does it take any complicated tools to strip an end of an Ethernet cable and thread it into this CAT5 wall plate in the wall?HONESTLY, I have no idea.
No tools required if you get this: http://www.cyberguys.com/product-details/?productid=32279Oh, that's extremely useful I'm glad I don't have to loose a cord. Here's your JBox.

Solve : Patch Panel Blues?

Answer»

I have recently installed a new six port patch panel on my network. All the nodes on the network are working fine as far as sending and receiving data. The only cable I am having trouble with is the connection from the broadband modem to my firewall/router. If I wire it direct from the modem to the router it works fine, however if I run it through my patch panel I LOSE connectivity. My thoughts are that the send and receive pairs in the cat5e cable are fine but the connection from the modem to router uses more than the send and receive wires (green pair and orange pair if I am not mistaken).

I eventually want to upgrade to 1000Mbps which from my understanding uses all eight wires in the cat5 cable, so It is critical that they are correct.

I wire the RJ45 connectors as follows
green/white, green, orange/white, blue, blue/white, orange, brown/white, brown

This is the link to the wiring diagram for the female RJ45 in the patch panel.

Any info on this matter is appreciated.
http://homeowner.onqlegrand.com/pdf/is_sheets/IS-1507033.pdf
The modem & router connection don't use extra wires. The problem probably lies in the fact that the wires are SET up wrong. First double CHECK to make sure that the wires are in the correct ORDER just in case. SECOND if they are in the correct order then you probably have to flip them. Meaning you may need to use a crossover cable for this particular device but you're trying to use just a straight through cable.

For a wired router, can't go wrong with a BEFSR81 (8-port) or BEFSR41 (4-port). Just follow the directions and use the default settings. Don't use the CD.Netgear is best. I had a linsksy drop PACKETS. Quote from: cervantes100 on January 01, 2010, 06:33:01 PM

See - that's the problem with these threads. Someone once had a problem with one specific piece of equipment so that brand is no good. Then he got a different brand that works so that brand is now the best. Please.

I do agree that the SR81 (and it's smaller brother the SR41) is a solid, easy to use product if you decide to go with Linksys (it happens to be what I use too), but there are a lot of good ones out there. Just pick a name brand and go with it - this isn't something you need to overthink
This is a reply to Allan. This was my choice to go with a different brand not saying that Linksys is a bad product. Actually it's up to that individuals person to what product they wanted to purchase. That I do agree with you. This was based on my own opinion. Any of the above named routers will do the trick for ya, I personally use a Linksys WRt54G that once I was able to learn (get thru my thick skull) WORKED just fine. They also have a nice FORUM. My biggest helper was their software Network Magic which I also purchased

Solve : Cable Data?

Answer»

guy's check out my web site
i made some photo how to MAKE cable data straight or cross

http://kuliner-yuk.com/?p=271

This isn't a question. No offense but if you type "how to make a crossover cable" you will get tons of sites. So advertising your site doesn't help...Yeah, not a good post by the OP. Let's Hijack this.

Some newer routers don't care, you can use either kind of cable.
The crossover is only needed when you tie TWO PCs together without a router or hub. And it you EVER have to make a crossover cable for a temporary use, just cut into an old price of patch cable and transpose just two pair of wires. Sloppy. but it works for a temporary absolution to a problem. For the cost of the crimp tool and the other stuff you would NEED to do a neat job, just buy or trade for and old hub at a flea market.
Now here is something yo might not know. For 100mps Ethernet you can use the spare wires to supply low voltage power or use them for a telephone, intercom or some kind of remote control DEVICE. Just avoid high frequency or high voltage. Of the four pairs, only two are really needed for actual data. I use one pair for a telephone extension to my barn. (My 'Office' is in the barn.) I am thinking about what I could do with the other pair. Any ideas?

Solve : Unable to access remote server, FTP, Websites from LAN?

Answer»

Hi

I am facing a strange problem from last week and beating my head up to get it resolved. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

To summarize,

We have multiple websites setup on client's server, which has Windows 2003 Server SP2 installed and have Remote Desktop Connection enable to be able accessed from our LAN.

From last few days we are not able to access any of the website through internet. Also we are not able to connect to server using remote desktop connection.

FTP connection works, but it takes ages to load the WEB directories on server and disconnects again and again. Same issue with all websites on server, those all takes too much time to load, or event doesn't load some time. if we "ping" the server it does work.

The problem occurs only WITHIN our LAN, it works perfectly if accessed from computers outiside of our LAN. we are unable to figure out the problem.

Please suggest. I'm a bit confused. When you say you can't access it from "our lan" is this the lan of that client or your lan outside of the client? Chances are it's a firewall issue either at the server or a hardware firewall. Can you access the server through rdp from "outside" your lan? I once had a similar issue at one of our remote branches. After doing windows update to the server and restarted it I could no longer access it through rdp, programs it HOSTED couldn't be accessed anymore. Why? It seems one of the security updates decided to turn the firewall of the server to "on" instead of leaving it "off" although the update MADE no mention of it . Anyways try checking the firewall. Also, if you're using IIS check the permissions of the directories. Last but not least check the event logs.

Solve : Lan and wireless conflict?

Answer»

I know it might be a newbie question, but I have the following problem:

I am using two computers , laptop and desktop. Both of them have Win Xp professional version. They form LAN with a cable. The desktop computer connects to the Internet with Wi-Fi. I want to use it to connect to the Internet with laptop computer through the desktop. But when I enable lan network on the desktop computer, connection to the Internet immediately stops working. What should I change? Why not connect the laptop via Wi-Fi, also?1. Okay... Well I've never setup Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on a "wireless" connection; but I think it will work.

2. Crossover Cable. You'll need a "crossover" ethernet cable to connect the laptop computer to the desktop through their "wired" network connectors. I'd configure the desktop computer for ICS before physically connecting the two computers together.

Note: It's supposed to be a "crossover" cable, but if ONE (or more?) of the network adaptors has automatic crossover implemented and enabled, a "straight" through ethernet cable might work.

3. Reference(s). For the documentation in the following links, the desktop will be the "host" ICS computer and the laptop will be the "CLIENT" ICS computer.
     a. Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in Microsoft Windows
     b. ICS Host Computer Setup in Windows XP
     c. Internet Connection Sharing – ICS Client Computer Setup

4. Satisfaction Not Guaranteed. If you successfully enable ICS through the "wireless" adaptor of desktop, the desktop must be on for laptop internet access and you'll be limited by its processing power, processing load, and the throughput rate of its "wireless" connection.

Although you should be able to "surf" the internet and perform "normal" downloads through the ICS connection, there are functional limitations that a normal connection doesn't have. I just don't remember what they are...

5. Recommendation:
     a. Add "wireless" network adaptor to laptop and connect directly to internet through your wireless home router (or wireless access point). USB interface works well for this.
     b. Ensure host ICS computer (desktop) has box checked for "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" on the "ADVANCED" tab for its wireless network connection. Quote from: soybean on January 02, 2010, 03:10:14 PM

Why not connect the laptop via Wi-Fi, also?
To reiterate, why bother with setting up wireless ICS? That's a question for the Original Poster (OP).
Thx it solved my problem. Quote from: Dusanm on January 02, 2010, 04:58:02 PM

Solve : Wireless Routers and wifi??

Answer»

I tried searching for the answer but I do not believe it was listed. So.. Can anyone please tell me if it is possible to use a wireless router as if it was an adapter to connect to a another wifi signal? If not, what is the difference between a router and an adapter? Is it basically just that one broadcasts and one receives signals? Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. Oh yes, I am using Windows XP (fully updated) on a Dell Dimension 4300 with 512MB of RAM and a 40G hard drive. The router is a Netgear.. The big silver one with a black stand and a large black antenna. (sorry I do not know the serial or model NUMBER) I HOPE someone KNOWS which one I am referring to. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_bridge

In order to use network bridging you will either need to connect to the router with a wired connection or wirelessly; the latter would of course kind of defeat the purpose in this case Thank you both very much.. Well I was hoping to pick up a WiFi signal with a wireless router because I do not have the internet. Quote from: Lucky13 on December 28, 2009, 03:51:31 PM

Well I was hoping to pick up a WiFi signal with a wireless router because I do not have the internet.
This is, of course, an improper usage of someone else's Internet access unless you actually have PERMISSION from them. If you are able to do this without them knowing because they are using no security/encryption on their Internet access and they discover that someone is leaching on their account and they decide to enable WPA or WEP encryption, you will no longer be able to access the Internet via their account.

Solve : Extending a Wireless Network?

Answer»

Afternoon all,

I want to extend the range on my BT Broadband HomeHub. Can anyone recommend the BEST way to do this?

Thanks!

That depends on how far you want to extend it. My first thought would be a high gain antenna though. Here's a practical example. This may not apply to you, but it MIGHT give you an idea. The school has a wireless connection they use in a couple of classrooms at one end of the campus. But it does not extend to the classrooms on the other side of the campus. The campus has two clusters of classrooms that are SEPARATED by a stretch of about 500 feet or so. Also, they're quite a few trees in the way. So what they did is they ran ethernet cable from one group of classrooms over to the other group of classrooms and then at the end of each city said that cable they PUT in access POINTS. The ethernet cable was tied into the lLAN in one of the classroom, which had a DSL connection to the Internet. That way the children had to 1 AM have their own access point and the children of the other end have the other access point. No attempt was made to try to build a superduper access point that would cover the whole area. Besides, it would have been very expensive.

Solve : VPN Disconnects.?

Answer»

Not sure if I am in the right place. I am trying to connect to my work computer via SonicWall Global VPN. I have a Netopia modem (if that matters). I keep getting disconnected every 2-3 minutes. Please help. I have way too much work to do (yes on a Friday night). My IT guy at work has no clue--says everything is fine on his end, he cloud connect with no problems. Not sure if it is related, but I ALSO can not get a wireless router to work. I have DSL & Windows Vista (not sure that matters either.) Please help!!!!!!!! google "VPN troubleshooting"

Since you are able to connect for a certain amount of time, it sounds like a software problem. Try reinstalling SonicWall Global VPN

If that does you no good, run an anti-virus scan, and try disabling non-microsoft services or "start-up" programs to help ISOLATE the issue..There may be a service or program interfering with your VPN application

If you're not sure how to disable services or start up items LET me KNOW...Does the computer you're connecting to disconnect fomr the internet? Try doing the VPN and monitor it to see if it disconnects from the internet when it's downloading/uploading too much. It could be a problem with the ethernet/wireless adapter drive.

I have just fixed my computer with the partitions, now I can't even go to the internet.( before I couldn't either)
First my broswer stopped working, I could use MSN messenger and other stuff that uses internet.
Few days later I couldn't use internet at all No MSN messenger no nothing.
MY msn diagnostic say my KEY PORTS were not working.
later I checked my WIRLESS STATUS and says my Ipv6 connectivity has no internet access is there anyway I can fix this.Assuming you have Windows 7, it seems you have the "LOCAL Access Only" PROBLEM try this and SEE if it works:
    * click the Start button
    * click "Control Panel"
    * click "Network and Internet"
    * click "Network and Sharing Center"
    * click the link "Local Area Connection"
    * click the button "Properties"
    * untick the box in front of "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)"
    * click the OK button
    * close the Local Area Connection popup
    * observe the value of Access type. This should now be Local and Internet.

Solve : WiFi to my desktop, via my laptop?

Answer»

Good morning,

I wonder if you can help me. I have a laptop that has WiFi capability. Can I link it to my desktop in anyway so I can use the wifi on my desktop?

Thanks in advanceunfortunately, what you want is impossible although there other way we could make connection with your laptop via desktop or vise versa, all need to do is to buy a wireless access-point that will connect your desktop and your laptop. Quote from: Matt567 on December 29, 2009, 02:19:29 AM

I have a laptop that has WiFi capability. Can I link it to my desktop in anyway so I can use the wifi on my desktop?

1. Probably. But I'm not clear on "what" you want to do or "why". There may be better ways to achieve your "objective". (That might include spending money on additional network components.)

2. Objective. What is your objective (or system requirements to be satisfied)?
     a. To share a single internet connection among both computers.
          (1) Internet through "wireless" network ADAPTOR of laptop.
          (2) Internet through "wired" network adaptor of desktop.
     b. To share files and/or printer between desktop and laptop.
     c. To share a single "wireless" connection to your own or someone else's local area network among both computers.
     d. One time transfer of files from one computer to the other.

3. Internet Access. If you want to share a single Internet connection among both the desktop and laptop, where does the Internet enter your home?
     a. DSL Modem
     b. Cable Modem
     c. Wireless Modem?
     d. Dial-up

4. Laptop WiFi capability. If by WiFi, you mean the laptop has a standard "wireless" network adaptor, then it may be used to connect to either a "wireless access point" (infrastructure mode) or another "wireless" network adaptor (ad-hoc mode).

     c. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiFiHi,

To clarify, I'm trying to avoid buying a USB dongle for my desktop.

To answer your questions;

I want to use my laptop to provide an internet connection for my desktop

I have BT Broadband, provided wirelessly throughout my house

My laptop has a standard network adaptor

Thanks1. Okay... Well I've never setup Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on a "wireless" connection; but I think it will work.

2. Crossover Cable. You'll need a "crossover" ethernet cable to connect the laptop computer to the desktop through their "wired" network connectors. I'd configure the laptop computer for ICS before physically connecting the two computers together.

Note: It's supposed to be a "crossover" cable, but if one (or more?) of the network adaptors has automatic crossover implemented and enabled, a "STRAIGHT" through ethernet cable might work.

3. Reference(s). For the documentation in the following links, the laptop will be the "host" ICS computer and the desktop will be the "client" ICS computer.
     a. Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) in Microsoft Windows
     b. ICS Host Computer Setup in Windows XP
     c. Internet Connection Sharing – ICS Client Computer Setup

4. SATISFACTION Not Guaranteed. If you successfully enable ICS through the "wireless" adaptor of laptop, the laptop must be on for desktop internet access and you'll be limited by its processing power, processing load, and the THROUGHPUT rate of its "wireless" connection.

Although you should be able to "surf" the internet and perform "normal" downloads through the ICS connection, there are functional limitations that a normal connection doesn't have. I just don't remember what they are...

Solve : link aggregation?

Answer»

Does link aggregation help your computer utilize your Internet bandwidth, or is link aggregation only for LANs?

Reason I ask is because I just did a little experiment where I tested my download an upload speed at speedtest.net. Using my onboard nic only, I tested the upload/download speeds.. Then adding my 802.11/g Wireless card, I tested again and there was no performance increase, in fact there was a slight decrease in the speed results..

My onboard NIC is 100 mbps and the Wireless card is 54 mbpsI found some ANSWERS, I believe.. According to Wikipedia "link aggregation", if I Interpreted it correctly, a couple limitations are that, the speed of the NICs must be identical...There's my first problem..

Second is that the drivers have to support aggregation & the OS has to support aggregation.. According to Wiki, Windows doesn't include any native aggregation software in there OSs... (Windows 7 might...don't know) So I guess I'd have to look to third parties for the higher-level support.. and then hope the NICs used have SUPPORTED drivers..

To sum up, "bonding" two NICs is not a simple as it sounds
Windows 2000 supports Load-balancing two installed NICs, but I don't think that's the same as link aggregation, and if it is it only works upstream I think.

That being said I don't think it would help you utilize more bandwidth; unless, somehow, you have super-expensive internet that is faster then 100mbps... which you can solve by getting a gigabit adapter What I was thinking was that my my current nic may be bottlenecking the connection between my Gateway and computer, and that adding another nic would increase the bandwidth between my gateway and computer.

I think I got the idea from wireless technologies, for example, using an 802.11/b (11 mbps) card you would never GET a full 11 mbps, only somewhere around half that because of contributing networking factors like csma/ca (which 802.11/b uses) and the fact that distance from the access point and other users on the network effect the bandwidth...

However, this is clearly not the case as I thought it was. My ISP allows 2.8 mbps downloads and even at 5.5 mbps (half of 802.11/b) that's still more than enough to allow 2.8 mbps downloads... Of course this is more so with a 100 mbps nic..

When I go to speedtest.net I get something like 2.24 mbps, not my 2.8 mbps. Quote from: EEVIAC on December 31, 2009, 01:03:21 PM

What I was thinking was that my my current nic may be bottlenecking the connection between my Gateway and computer, ...When I go to speedtest.net I get something like 2.24 mbps, not my 2.8 mbps.
I assume you have DSL? If your ISP limits you to 2.8 mbps, you will never see it higher, unless you pay for higher speed. 2.24 is pretty close to the tier you pay for, SpeedTest is a good test. It could be a bit slower for many reasons. The bottleneck is the tier, not the computer.

"Link Aggregation" is something like the scheme that DOCIS 3.0 uses for cable modems and also in 802.11n, they call it channel bonding.Just one question.
What would it cost to up your service to 5 mega bits per second?
100,000,000,.000,0000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 dollars

shoot I can't afford that!!

Cable is what, 4 - 100 mbps ?

Maybe I'll upgrade to that, but not now, I don't plan on being here for more than another six months and I don't really need the bandwidth anyway...I was just experimenting..

I've never had cable Internet though. Is cable flexible as far as how much bandwidth you're allocated? Isn't that how packet switched ISPs work?

edit: well what I mean is, for example, T1/E1/T3 are circuit switched networks
and are more expensive for the ISP to set up/maintain, therefore they cost the consumer an arm and leg also.. In packet switched services, the ISP sets up a central office and allocates chunks of it for everyone to share (ie. dsl and cable) so it's cheaper for everyone who wants a type of broadband connection..When compared to cable, dsl is low bandwidth so, I was thinking that cable might allow or be more flexible with how/what they allocate there bandwidth..EEVIAC,
No sarcasm meant, but you need to do Networking 101.
The idea of "Packet" switching is to get the most out of a physical connection.

It is not simple Time Division Multiplex.

In practice you can have more open connections that what the physical transport can handle. Many computer activities are interactive, so there is a lot of idle time. That is basically have it works.

The packets are vary SHORT time frames. Most users do not notice a drop in bandwidth until the network gets close to saturation. The system is meant to run overloaded. It is a waste of resources to have more bandwidth than you need.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Packet_switching
Read that over with care. As you know, the wikipedia can be very useful,. but often the articles need some editing.

well thanks for the info.. The reason I asked is because I'm not sure I understand what I read about packet switched vs. circuit switched networks... I like to ask about what I think I understand and if someone agrees, then that is somewhat of a confirmation that I really understand it..If they don't agree then I need to brush up, so to speak... That's one of the ways I learn

I like you pint of view.
thx..........It has proven to be an efficient way of learning..

By 2015... I will know ALL

Cable varies in speed, for me, it doesn't vary much, since everybody else in my neighborhood (and therefore the same network backbone) is subscribed to Shaw High-speed, whereas I have "XtremeSpeed":

however, I've done speedtest.net tests that scored as "low" as 5mbps; I've also gotten up to 60 mbps a few times. Anyway, I guess that sort of answers your question regarding cable flexibility; I have cable, and the speed I get is determined both by how "busy" the backbone is (basically, my neighbors) as well as my service plan; I have the best I can get for my area; those of us who go for the best PROBABLY get preference over those that don't for bandwidth; And it's easy to upgrade the plans for most cable providers; just ring em up, and (for me) it was less then an hour and I was upgraded.

that helps, thx

Solve : Strange Internet activity: Other PCs connected, my connection drops...?

Answer»

I give up. Is this just me or is it typical?

DROPPED CONNECTIONS:

Once in a while, my connection dies. No activity. I can have several active connections to several sites, and after maybe ten or fifteen minutes all dead. I'll open up another tab and try Google or others, and after about twenty or thirty seconds it's back online.

This has happened on different systems and flavors of Windows over the years with DSL and cable from four different ISPs. This would certainly make me THINK it's typical, but I've been a little suspicious lately because there have been times when I'd right-click on the network icon in my system tray and let windows try to repair the connection (or whatever that option is), and it repairs and my connection is then immediately available.

Any ideas? I am not technically inclined, and networking is at the bottom of my knowledge pile.

I've had this problem between two different cities among about five different PCs and ONE laptop. Between four ISPs. Four different routers. Between DSL and cable. Between XP and Vista. Firefox, Chrome, IE. Different firewalls, from Comodo to Zone Alarm.

Most of the time I click on the network icon in the system tray and GO to the Network and SHARING Center window. On the map image at the top of the screen, where my PC has a line to Network 2 (which has an exclamation point on the line) to the Internet (which has a red X on the line) -- Here I click on the red X. The Network Diagnostics window appears. I choose "Automatically get new IP settings for the network adapter "Local Area Connection." The problem almost always is resolved following this. But it keeps happening! Maybe about every hour or two, sometimes more often. On the other hand, sometimes I don't have to do anything and the connection returns after a few minutes.

Do connections typically drop like this among PEOPLE?

About an hour ago, I connected my laptop and PC to a Linksys workgroup switch and visited pages periodically with both computers. When the connection stopped, I tried to connect to google on the PC and yahoo on the laptop. Neither would connect. So, it seems to at least start at the router.

OTHER PCS CONNECTED:

Right now, there are two other PCs in my network. A little while ago there was "ASHLEY-PC". Now there are two different computers. What's going on here? I can access their shared documents. Can they get in my computer? Are we sharing the same Internet connection?

Is this why my connection drops?

1. Looks fine to me. I'm using Mozilla Firefox 3.5.5 in its normal mode with TWO additional add-ons: "Better Privacy 1.45" and "Flashblock 1.5.11.2".

2. Browser.

Solve : Internet connection drops every minute or so...?

Answer» HELLO all! Hope people are enjoying their vacations

Anyways, i'm having an internet problem here that's really starting to get annoying.
My internet connection is constantly dropping. It varies a little: from every 10 seconds to maybe a few minutes. It never stays connected for very long.

I'll try to explain my full situation here.
I live outside town so there's not a huge amount of houses around me. I've got high speed internet, like 15 Mbps. A wireless N router with two laptops connected to it (each with a wireless N adapter, obviously). My router's on the main floor and I'm having problems in the TV room in the basement (where it still says the signal is very good).
I bought my LAPTOP before I went off to university, and at that point I was able to get internet down here fine. I go away for 4 months and now it's giving me all sorts of trouble. I didn't have any trouble with it at school, once again, it's just at home in this one particular room.
My parents laptop works just fine down here, it's never been a problem, and my ipod TOUCH works down here just fine as well.
Still, i figured since it's a particular room that it might be interference. So I changed the CHANNEL to try out all 11 channels and it didn't help. Then i unplugged all the phones, turned off my cell phone, turned off my ipod, and it didn't help. Anything else that might cause interference I should check for?

I wouldn't worry about it this much normally, but I'm on co-op for the next 4 months and the job I got happened to be in my hometown. Basically I'm back home for the next 4 months and I almost always use my laptop in the TV room.

So, any ideas??? It's looking like it might not actually be interference but then I have no idea what else it would be...

Anyways, thanks in advance, hopefully a few of you still check the boards during this time

Edit: OH, and I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2, 64-bit.Are you sure that you Hi-Speed connection is is good, make sure by testing it with an ethernet cable. If not it probably something wrong with your router. What type of router do you have?

a. Yes, my old computer has internet access.
b. We have DSL.
c. Yes, I would like to have internet access from my room.
d. Paying for them on the same account would be nice,... but will do either as long as the computer can go to the internet.1. DLS? I'm not familiar with "DLS". What type of internet link is that?

2. Network Layout. What physical components are in the home network and how are they connected? Like the following:

DSL_Modem
-------> wireless home router (combined router, 4-port "wired" switch, wireless access point).
-------> old desktop computer (wired to LAN switch port on home router)
             - - - -> laptop_1 (wireless to wireless access point of home router)
             - - - -> laptop_2 (wireless to wireless access point of home router)

3. Options.
     a. Share the existing ISP connection, if it can handle additional throughput.
          (1) "wired" ethernet connection (good to 100 meters - 328 feet)
          (2) "wireless" 802.11g or 802.11n connection
          (3) Use power line components plugged into existing home AC outlets to transmit data over home ELECTRICAL WIRING. Don't know of anyone who has done this.
     b. Get your own wireless ISP provider for a Wireless Modem. I've heard talk of 3G and 4G Mobile. Don't REALLY know what this is, except you could place this additional modem anywhere.

4. Recommendation. Save some bucks. Share the existing ISP connection. My first choice would be a "wired" connection if you can do it; otherwise "wireless" adaptor on new computer (802.11g or 802.11n) to existing wireless access point (of home router?). I prefer "wired" connection for speed, security, and to avoid potential HEALTH risks from constant exposure to wireless signals.

Solve : Wi Fi situation?

Answer»

I was at a neighbors house last night and we got to talking about his computer situation. He has a Netgear wireless router in the basement. His computer is a Dell tower on the second floor. He has a "low" signal strength. When I looked at it, I opened up the icon on the bottom right that listed all his wireless networks. 4-5 networks were listed, his netgear network was listed at the top and said it was connected. The other wireless networks seem to be other families in the neighborhood because they are named and we recognized the names. I wanted to delete the other networks to see if it would IMPROVE the signal strength of his netgear router but could not do it....I am not even sure if this would help.

Anyone have any ideas on how to trouble shoot this signal strength issue ?You can't delete other networks. That's like saying you want to "delete" channel 5 to see if you will get better reception on channel 4 It would cause less interference but that wouldn't help your situation too much and it can't be done.

He could get Wireless N or a high gain antenna for his computer and that would increase signal. He could also repostition the router around the basement to see where the signal would be best.

Is his speed affected by him not having "high" signal strength? Does his connection stop at times? If no, then it's nothing to worry about. You could possibly try to SWITCH the router to use a different frequency. I think 1, 6, and 11 are the three you should try. There are 11 channels I'm pretty sure but if your default channel is the same as every other in the neighborhood your signal will not be good.

Please correct me if I'm WRONG.The recommendation is to place the "wireless ACCESS point" high rather than low. The basement, while convenient, is not the optimum location (or so I thought). See Improving Wireless Range: Choosing the Best Locations. You could possibly try to switch the router to use a different frequency. I think 1, 6, and 11 are the three you should try. There are 11 channels I'm pretty sure but if your default channel is the same as every other in the neighborhood your signal will not be good.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

That's true but he isn't experiencing interference. It would be right if his connection was disconnecting. It won't HURT to try though.

Solve : Can't get my wifi equipped laptop to connect with home wireless router?

Answer»

Recently purchased used laptop. After turning on, the laptop does recognize that there are available wireless connections out there including my wireless router. However, when I click on the wireless connection, it tries to hook up with it but then an ERROR message pops up showing that the system may be out of range and to refresh the listing. I am only a few feet from the router. I am no expert on what the problem is and how I can fix this. Can ANYONE HELP me? I am using a Linksis Broadband Router WRT300N. Any help would be appreciated.Let try a few simple fixes first.

1- There should be a on/off switch or key function to turn on the wireless connection. U might have to download the user guide from the LT website.

2-Give more information about the LT u have brand, make, model, Dell, HP, Acer? What OS MAC, Linux, WINDOW's version (Win XP SP2 or SP3)?

There isn't much more we can do without information, beside it can't connect.
Also when posting, please post the "exact" error or informational message you're referring to in "quotes".Has this laptop ever connected to the router or are you trying to set up a NEW connection?

Solve : not fully understanding the nslookup command?

Answer»

Hi, everyone! It has been a while since I've posted and I have encountered many new problems and solved a few (but not too many).

I have a new problem in trying to understand the nslookup function. Once more, I am trying to follow the instructions from my old textbook and attempting to answer the questions posed.

The parts of nslookup I am having trouble with are:

1. List ADDRESSES in the domain
2. List all records of the NDS server (Novell Directory Services)
3. Use finger to identify the default user at a host

For #1, I input ls -a cnn.com

My response is : Can't list domain cnn.com. No response from server. The DNS server refused to transfer the zone cnn.com to my computer.

Essentially, query refused. Why can't I get it to go through? One source says that this COMMAND will often generate 'query refused' results. Incidentally, I choose cnn.com arbitrarily.

For #2, I get the same response, essentially 'query refused'. Why, again won't it go through?

For #3, the finger command, one source tells me that this command is usually not available and I am finding that to be true. Why is it not available?

First of all, I am unsure just what and how to ask this command. Can someone tell me how to use this command?

The response I get from trying typing (at the command prompt): > finger cnn.com is: Finger: unknown service.

I get this everytime. How do I use this command? How do I get it to work?

That is all for now. Thanks and I await any replies.Hello
Follow the link below and read the article on nslookup. especially the section:

the server NAME (where NAME is the name or IP address of a DNS server to query). It is not always possible to query a specific DNS server as often DNS queries are blocked to prevent DENIAL of service attacks.

Solve : TightVNC?

Answer»

Can Tight VNC be used to connect from a broadband link to a dail up link?

I configured TightVNC on my MOTHER's computer about 50 miles away. I set the login password for it, enabled the VNC Server service so it runs at boot time.. I had my MOM connect to her dail-up Internet Service and while she was connected, she emailed me the wide area address that was allocated to her for that session (she is not BEHIND a router or firewall). While she remained connected, I used Tight VNC to attempt a Remote Desktop connection with her computer and could not get through... Could not connect at all.. TightVNC didn't install any Windows Firewall options and I did not see an optional box to check to allow VNC to pass through.. Should I create a port in Windows Firewall? I don't want to disable the firewall for troubleshooting because then the computer will be infected with worms almost immediately.. As I said, she doesn't have a hard ware firewall sitting between her computer and the Internet..

All I can think of is that the VNC Server service was not running when I tried to connect. Maybe next time start the session manually, instead of using the service? I don't knoware you sure you're using the right IP adress?
have her go to ipchicken.com to FIND out

also, try realVNC, I managed to set up a (local) connection between my mac and my pc with THATIF you're using it to help her while she's on the computer you could also use Crossloop. Requires that she give you an access number but it's based on tightVNC and is easy to set up and use.For others who want to know what this is about:

Solve : (Dummy alert!) How do I connect two computers??

Answer»

Hi guys,
I'm a bit of a computer dummy and this might be a stupid question, but, how would connect my Compaq laptop with a Compaq desktop PC? The laptop has Windows 7 Home Premium and the desktop PC has Windows XP SP3. I wanna transfer files from my desktop to my laptop.
This question may have been answered before somewhere else on the forum, but i tried searching for it and it came up with no hits. Someone told me that there is some problem with the search function.
Anyway, so I searched on Google for how to do it and I tried a method where you simply connect the two computers with a Cat 5 cable. I did that but I didn't know what to do next. I would APPRECIATE any help, thx.
P.S.
Like I said before, I'm bad with computers and such and I don't know if I'm using the right cable. Here's exactly what it says on the cable:
ETL VERIFIED TO TIA/ETA-568-B . 2 CAT.5 UTP 24AWG 4PAIRS PATCH CABLE

And both my desktop and laptop only have one port for this kind of cable.

Thanks. You can attatch a cable to each of the computers Ethernet ports, then RUN the network setup wizardThx, but do i do that on both computers, or just one?bothHold both ends of the CAT-5 cable together, tang side down. Now closely examine the color code (solid or stripes) on the eight wires in each connector. If the wires at each end of the cable are in the same color sequence, you have a straight-through cable. If they differ, you probably have a cross-over cable. You're supposed to use a cross-over cable if you're connecting two computers directly with a single cable. If you connect through a "hub" or "switch" you use a "straight" cable.

Many newer network adaptors will "accept" a straight CAT-5 cable connecting two computers because they're programmed to logically cross-over the appropriate wires at the connector if necessary.

You use a "cross-over" cable to connect like equipment, e.g two computers; a "straight-through"cable to connect unlike equipment, e.g. computer to switch.Thx for the tip, Dahlarbear. Apparently, I have a "stratight-through" cable.
I guess I'll just use a re-writabel cd insted. Try the cable anywaysHome networking... What a broad and glorious subject... I've found the following to be a well organized site for Home Network, WIRELESS Network and Computer Networking Made Easy.

They haven't updated the information for Windows 7 yet, but I BELIEVE it's current for Vista. There were changes made between Windows XP and Vista that you can trip over but I'm hoping there weren't significant changes between Vista and Windows 7. What am I saying... You should be able to use this information to successfully work with your Windows XP and Windows 7 systems.

Quote from: gagan9514 on December 24, 2009, 05:47:03 PM

I guess I'll just use a re-writabel cd insted.

That will work. My first choice would have been a USB thumb/flash drive. A more permanent solution would be to purchase a "wireless" home router (or wired if you're concerned about health risks of wireless signals) and setup a home network. You would then configure the internal network (home computers) to permit file and/or printer sharing as needed. Many people have done this.

Solve : Help! 1 comp is connected to internet but another comp won't connect?

Answer»

I have a desktop computer connected to the internet via a broadband connection (using a Motorola Surfboard Modem & a DLink router). Yesterday I set up another desktop comp (using Windows XP) and connected the ethernet cord to the BACK of the tower. I had trouble getting the Internet to work, went through the various troubleshooting steps, and somehow (probably just dumb luck) got the Internet te work. A little while later I lost the connection and cannot get it back. 1st I called Gateway for help - they said the IP address was invalid and I needed to call the Internet Service Provider. I called COX and they said the problem is with the router. (Again, the other computer is hooked up to the same router and having no problems). Of course the router is no longer covered for TECHNICAL support. I went to their webpage for help and tried a few things that did not work. Help!?!Hello
TRY opening a command prompt. Type ipconfig /all This will give or might give u some information like a IP Address, gateway write down the infor and compare with the working PC. Next in the command prompt type the following ip address 127.0.0.1 This is a loop back address to your NIC. If u recieving any packets the NIC is working. If u did not get any packets the NIC is bad. Write back and let us the results. Just for piece of mind did u try a different cable patch cable?

Solve : won't see network drive?

Answer»

As of a week ago this problem started happening. 3 node network with one system not seeing a networked drive. 2 of the systems show the n/w drive. All running XP/ 2 w/o any SP's / the one with all the updates is the one not seeing the drive.

N/W drive is a Buffalo Linkstation HD-HG400LAN / checked their support site and they recommended enabling NETBIOS over TCP/IP / didn't work on the pc in question / tried it on my LAPTOP and it worked.

System has Norton AV 2009 / tried Safe Mode with same results.

Alan <>< In what sense can you not see the drive, Alan? Can you ping it? Can you ACCESS the web interface? In what sense can you not see the drive? It is not SEEN in My Network Places\Explorer. I can map a drive LETTER to a folder on the drive, just not see the whole drive in the one computer.

Can you ping it? Yes.

Can you access the web interface? Yes. Thru the software on the computer in question I can login to the drive interface with no problem.

Alan <>< If you browse from Windows Explorer's ADDRESS bar via IP address rather than NetBIOS name (e.g. "\\192.168.1.100"), can you see all the shares? If so, I suspect that you have a firewall issue on the one computer that can't see the drive. Make sure that the following ports are all open: 137, 138, 139 & 1512 (tcp & udp). Thanks Rob. I did shut off the firewall but will double-check it next week.

Have a great weekend

Then it will say finish, all you have to then do is rightt click an say share whatever files an such. You'll need a hub with direct cables if it was only two a cross over would be okay.Rob- you did a *censored* fine job on that FAQ, if I may say so

E-PC and X-PC are networked together by an ethernet cable with no router.
I want to set up an Ad Hoc network between E-PC and S-PC using two Trendnet wireless G adapters (TEW-424UB).

I have TRIED setting up the network by using the Trendnet configuration tool and by using the Windows configuration tool but was UNABLE to get the network working with either one. Most of the time, the computers say they are not connected; one time, the computers said they were connected but nothing was shared between them.

Could SOMEONE please tell me how to set up the network? I have never set up a wireless network before.

Solve : URLs?

Answer»

Why is it that some computers require typing WWW in the URL in order to access a web site, but other computers, don't require it...

For example, on my mom's computer if I want to go to Myspace I have to type www.myspace.com

But on my own computer I can get by typing: myspace.comAre you sure about this? Usually it's the site........something with the browser maybe?http://myspace.com automatically redirects to http://www.myspace.com. The redirection is suggested at the server end and the browser is expected to comply. Which browser are you using?ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! It's the "disembodied head", look out! lol

Uh, the browser is Internet Explorer 7. I don't recall exactly what is says when I try to access a web page without using WWW, but it simply doesn't work.

On most other computers, however, I don't have this problem.

Screenshot please!Post the error you get, if any.well, my mom lives 50 miles away so I'll have to call her and ask her what is says when she attempts to access a web page like I described.......(I just called her and got a busy signal, she has a dial-up connection without any call waiting!) I'll try back again in a little while Quote from: blockHEAD on June 01, 2009, 12:13:45 PM

Once again, if she adds the WWW to the URL it works fine, but on most other machines I don't have to use WWW in the URL.

That's plain weird. "myspace.com" is a valid URL for MySpace. You can confirm this unequivocally from a command prompt.

To make that easier, download HostsXpert ( http://www.majorgeeks.com/Hoster_d4626.html ) and then follow the steps below:

- Unzip HostsXpert.zip
- It will create a folder NAMED HostsXpert in WHATEVER folder you extract it to.
- Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
- click Restore MS Hosts File and then click OK.
- Click the X to exit the program

Restart computer.

Not from what I read, they're keeping the prices the same...*censored*, Comcast would never do that for me...Probably real. We have COX Communications in Arizona. Seems like they increase the speed every year and a half or so. They EVENTUALLY raise the price a bit too though...

200kbps --> 600 kbps? That's just theoretical and is it true that you will get the benefit of the 3mbps? Maybe they're just trying to lighten the load on their infrastructure by doing it. And maybe you actually see no real big difference at your end. Quote

of course, you should get an increase in speed if they are giving every one of their subcribers the benefit of the increased speed! Well...I'll find out on Friday! Quote from: Helpmeh on JUNE 02, 2009, 03:32:13 PM

Is there anyway I can make USE usage of 500 GB on this server ?
Partition it.It takes only 120 GB before PARTITIONING.

Solve : simple network?

Answer»

I want to network a PC, a laptop, and a TV. My PC runs Windows XP Pro. It has a Realtek 10/100 Mb Fast Ethernet Controller and connects to my ISP via eight-pin RJ45. My TV has an input labeled PC-DVI which is said to be "a DVI-I input compatible with both DVI-A (analog) and DVI-D (digital) inputs" and also two PC-DVI Audio jacks. I plan to buy a laptop computer and then make wireless connections between laptop and ISP for browsing (in my easy chair) and wireless connection between laptop and TV so that TV repeats the laptop display. I need instruction - how do I do that? Please tell me or point me to a good tutorial. The DVI input on your TV is for a wired video signal connection, not a network connection. You will need a cable and this of COURSE depends on your laptop having a DVI output (lower end laptops don't).

For your wireless connection, you'll need a wireless router or access point. Your PC will need a wireless adapter if it doesn't already have one, and your laptop likewise. Please post the specs of your PC and proposed laptop if you would like further assistance. Thanks for your reply. As to the TV input, who cares WHETHER the signal arrives via cable or via radio link? What I need is hardware at the laptop that converts the laptop display signal to an outgoing radio signal and hardware at the TV that converts the incoming radio signal to whatever form the TV requires for display. The question is: Does such hardware exist and where do I GET it?

As to the PC, it does not have a router. I think it has a network adapter (Realtek) but not wireless. I wonder if the PC needs to be involved. Conceptually, it should be possible to provide a wireless link between the ISP port (which feeds the PC) and the laptop. Maybe a wireless router does this, I am not familiar with them. Would a laptop have the required hardware built in?Laptops VARY according to what hardware they have. Most modern laptops have at least wireless G CARDS built in.

Your laptop-TV needs - you could pay a lot of money for that kind of thing. I guess you could try an S-Video adapter and couple that with a video sender - but that would be crazy money compared to just putting your laptop next to the TV... The wireless network used in computing would not serve this purpose simultaneously, anyway.

Solve : Why so many packets?

Answer»

I have 4 home computers, 2 running XP and 2 running Vista. The question is with the 2 Vista machines. I noticed that when I start these machines with network connections the number of received packets goes quickly to several million received and then sends several hundred thousand. I have ran several SCANS and nothing appears wrong. Is this number of packets normal on the Vista systems? My XP units don't even COME close to that level of traffic.

Maybe the two Vista machines are fighting for dominance over the network...

If you're INTERESTED, run Wireshark to find out exactly what they're talking about. Might be worth switching your router off and seeing if the rate of traffic increases or decreases.

Note that this traffic might be Windows updates silently downloading in the background. The question for me is, are my machines acting as servers for some spam operation with that MANY packets flying around? Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on June 01, 2009, 08:04:21 AM

Solve : How to know if anyone is stealing my internet??

Answer»

I am not a computer genius but i know some stuff so here is the problem. I do not know if someone is stealing my internet, even if it is possible but i prefer to know the facts.
Here are the details: I use Verizon DSL high speed internet. This is NOT wireless internet so don't tell me about securing router and access points (yes!! i read). Here is the setup if its necessary. There is a box outside the house with a hard line entering the house. A telephone wire is connected from the hard line jack to a high speed modem which is connected to the computer.

Someone told me this but i am not sure of its validity, so if anyone knows please explain what ARP is about. I was told to run a command named "arp -a" several times and count the number of entries i see. Sometimes i get 7 entries and sometimes i get 8 entries. Does the extra entry indicate someone else is using the internet?

So here are the questions:
1. Is the DSL type (mentioned above) stealable?
2. How to know if someone is stealing it? (Any commands etc)
3. How to find the culprit if there is one?
4. What is ARP about? and is there any validity to the above or is it just nonsense. Please explain

Thank you people!!It's pretty UNLIKELY that someone will try and hook into your wired DSL connection. Not impossible, but unlikely. If they are savvy enough to do that, you can bet they're savvy enough to cover their tracks beyond your ability to detect their activity. Concentrate on securing all endpoints (computers) with a GOOD level of firewall and malware protection.

ARP is the protocol that maps machine addresses (coded into a network card) to IP addresses. An ARP table will only report on addresses that it has seen - it is not omniscient and a switch will get in the way of a computer's ability to see other addresses. Given that MAC and IP addresses can be spoofed, the ARP cache is not particularly reliable anyway.

Don't overlook the fact that wherever there's a connection to the internet, there's a risk. That should be more of a concern than someone piggy backing onto your wired connection.

To answer your questions:

1. Yes. It would take a high level of technical expertise.

2. Google "intrustion detection systems".

3. An IDS may assist. But it is rarely worthwhile expending ENERGY identifying the cuplrit. Concentrate on making your systems secure.

4. See above.you got firewall on? I would like to know how easy it is to hack a firewalled pc with a good firewall.

but i got a router which has hardware firewall and a software firewall on my pc .... QUOTE from: 2x3i5x on May 29, 2009, 09:56:48 PM

I would like to know how easy it is to hack a firewalled pc with a good firewall.

It all depends on how well the firewalls are configured, whether there are any vulnerabilities and if you've punched any application holes through your firewall (e.g. using LogMeIn). Hacking strategies include social engineering of course and no firewall on earth can protect against that.

Solve : Internet Connection dodgy when using Facebook Chat?

Answer»

Hi everybody, for a week or two now whenever I'm trying to chat with people on facebook, my connection goes all sorts of weird on me and starts triple/quadruple posting my messages, not even sending some of them (endless sending loop), and telling me it can't connect to facebook at this time. No ONE else is having these problems (at least of the people I speak too). And I have no idea how to fix it.

Here's what I can give you:
Windows XP SP3
Hard-connection, goes to a Linsksys WRT54G wireless router configured to just route wired connections, then to a Motorolla modem. I'm sharing this one ISP line with... 6 computers, and 3 game consoles, all connected at varying times. I don't SEE any difference when everything else is off.

Also to be of note, some other odd things have been happenign with my computer, such as the font getting changed... and italiscized randomly.

I'll post a hijack this log if that will help. Thanks!
