Solve : Can I connect secondary WAP on second floor using rj-45??

Answer»

Good morning!

I have an issue. My dell laptop has an absolute junk internal wireless receiver, and in my new home I cannot pull a consistent connection in my room on the second floor. My brother-in-law's laptop pulls the connection fine in my room.

The router (CISCO E3000 - using Tomato as network utility) is in the kitchen, diagonally below. Both of our laptops pull nearly identical signals and speeds in the kitchen near to the router, and also direct connected via ethernet port.

The house is wired with rj-45 jacks in several rooms, including mine. The jack is working in my room (now, after rerouting the wire, which was previously cut and rerouted to the basement).

My question: can I connect a wireless access point (not a second router/switch/wap combo) to the rj-45 in my room to broadcast a secondary wireless signal so my super awesome and not at all disappointing Dell can pull the signal, in addition to my smart TV and Xbox/Wii. Essentially, accomplishing the same thing a wireless range EXTENDER would, only better, as it would be broadcasting a fresh signal instead of amplifying an exisiting signal.

Notes:

There is a baby monitor operating on the 2.4ghz frequency in the next room.

My PC is WIN7 64bit, and in a month or two I will be upgrading to Lenovo Yoga 13 (the top end specs model) with Win8 Pro.

I also plan on purchasing the Linksys AE3000 wireless adapter, because I have this same weak/nil connectivity issue in my friend's basement, where I spend many Saturdays.

I have already troubleshot the COMPUTER in many ways, with ipconfig flush/release, disabling tcp autotuning, resetting the winsock, and anything Google or my IT friends and I could think up. I already know that my Dell just has an insufficient wireless receiver based on all the rule-out troubleshooting I went through.Yes, just make sure the AP is configured on a channel that wont interfere with the one below you

Thanks, Valkyrie. Do you mean set the downstairs router to broadcast only on 2.4ghz and set the WAP upstairs to broadcast only on 5.2ghz?

Solve : dlink dwa 552 not detecting network?

Answer»

My brother is trying to set up a brand new DESKTOP running windows 7. The guys at Memory Express installed his OS and everything, said they had it working fine in store. The card he is using is the D-Link N-Extreme DWA 552 and it isnt working. Im using a WIFI MODEM, cisco DPC3825. Its not a matter of signal strength, as my phone picks up the network from the exact location. When i try to USE D-links setup crap, it doesnt find the network and wont let me PROCEED until i find it. Help?

Solve : I can't use my wifi after a Windows update today?

Answer»

Hi,

I'm using Windows XP and Firefox for internet. When I checked my laptop today it said that Windows had done an automatic update. Since then I can't access wifi. I can get connected but get the message saying that there is LIMITED or no connectivity.

I'm currently on my LAN, which still works fine, but it's on a 3ft cable. I've been at this for hours, trying various fixes .. too numerous to MENTION. If anyone can throw any suggestions at me, they'd be very welcome.

I've tried everything and rebooted umpteen times. I can get into my modem setup no problem and tried changing settings, but nothing is working. You said you tried everything can you be more specific on what you did?
Hi Lalah,

I've had the same thing happen with my sound after Windows Update DECIDED it was time to update the drivers/software for my sound card, despite the update being an older version. The fix was to uninstall the driver Windows Update had put there, and install the driver provided on the OEM's website.

I'm not SURE if you have done this, but you could try the same thing but you need to know your laptop's serial or model number (or both) and the wireless card you have inside it. Then you can find the right driver on the laptop manufacturer's website, keeping in mind that there might be some other wireless drivers listed that aren't compatible...

As TheWaffle asked, could you TELL us what exactly you've tried? Thanks for the responses. I managed to get this sorted eventually. I have Optimum wifi. They supplied me with a netgear router and I was having this very same problem, so I hooked up to a linksys router I had instead and it worked perfectly for months. I switched back to the netgear router today and it worked! I'm not sure why this would be, but hey, at least I have my wifi back. From this one would assume that sometimes updates fail. And that is true.

You should allow XP to have a restore point for each day. When an update fails.,you just revert beak to the day before the update.

Solve : Network diagnosis shows a problem?

Answer»

I did a routine network diagnosis with M-Lab. In the results, there is some thing I don't understand. Could someone PLEASE interpret these two statements and tell me what they mean. Please see the attachment. My download speeds are rather low.

[recovering DISK space, attachment deleted by admin]This >link< might help you understand. Speedtest is known to GIVE us our ACTUAL bandwith speed when it comes to slow connection problem. This link needs a plugin for the displays to work. It wants to install a plugin named "Java Runtime Environment 1.7u10" Considering the recent Java security Concerns, is this safe to install?

Thank you,

Solve : Very unusual problem?

Answer»

Hello everyone, first time poster with a bit of a head scratcher. (well for me anyways)
Im trying to access a website via my desktop and i cannot open it, ping it or tracert it. The CONFUSING part is that i can access it via my laptop connected to the same home network. I also tried tor borwser earlier and i can open it on the problematic desktop.

Now i can understand if i accidently blocked the website or something, but this shouldnt prevent me from pinging it, should it?

Both desktop & laptop are using Win7 with internet explorer. Welcome to CH.
Windows 7 does have features to block specific SITES. A site can be blocked by the user, you, or by an security program.
Anyway, it may not mean anything is wrong with either computer. Thanks for the reply, shouldnt i still be ble to at LEAST ping the website? Ive tried it with the firewall switched off without success. Also i was able to view this website less than a month ago. In the event that you have to get to a website there are are workarounds.
For one, the website owner may have the same information on a DIFFERENT site.
Or you may gt what you want in a RSS feed.
As the penultimate resort, your can use a proxy.

But you may want to read up on how Windows 7 blocks websites.

...
There are many reasons why people ask how to block a website. Some of the most common reasons are to prevent children from having access to certain site content such as adult and gambling. For employers, blocking websites is the way to increase employees' productivity. So we want to show you how to block access to a website and avoid problems connected with it. ...

Of course they want to sell you something. I put the link here for reference.
The link below explains the built-in features of Windows parental con tools.

Hope that helps.
There is more to this, but I will wait for your replay.
You might be able to access the site from a different browser (though pinging it should have enabled it also).Try Opera and see if the RESULTS are the same.truenorth

Solve : Sub Invisible Machines?

Answer»

I have a small network setup in my room. Some reason now its not seeing all the units like it should. I have them all on the same work group, plugged into the same router an the other side connected with a hub into the router an only will see one side of the connected machines an not the other.
As usual, your post is CLEAR as MUD. There are probably another 20 things you could inform us of, but DONT. (Even though you've been told about this umpteen times). And going by you other posts, you've probably got it working by now or don't need it anyway. Can't you see the problem here?? MY guess is this thread will be locked within 6 post due to your constant time-wasting. You need to change your approach or you will not GET help.Amen!truenorth

Solve : connecting without router?

Answer»

Can I connect two computers together side by side and use the same internet and mail without a router? You could set up an Ethernet wired cable connection between the 2 computers and establish a network thereby giving you access to each computer from the other. However you would only be able to access the online facilities for whatever via the one that was either wired to your router or had the router dongle for wireless reception on it (or a built in wi=fi card). Given the low cost of wireless dongle receiver/transmitters why would you not give each computer it's ability to connect to your ISP modem/router? truenorthI'd add a router between your modem and computer vs CONNECTED directly between DSL or Broadband Modem and Computer for added HARDWARE firewall security personally, i have little trust in microsofts software firewall, or any other local software firewall directly exposed out to the web. If I read this right you want to have 2 computers connected to the internet both connected through your internet connection without use of a router.

I also agree with truenorth's statement of why not have each computer connected out to the web with their own connection. Such as USB wireless Network adapters are cheap. You then just need a router with wifi and connect them to the router and be all set.

If one was determined to make both computers connect out to the internet through a shared connection on 1 computer, the computer that is sharing the internet connection with the modem would need to have 2 network adapters. You then need to set internet connection sharing on the 1 computer that acts as the gateway for the other computer. You then have to have a peer to peer network between these 2 computers using a cross over cable since if we have no network switch as well a cross over cable is needed to tie the TX and RX between the two computers. The computer acting as a gateway has to be connected to the internet and running in order for computer #2 to connect through it out to the web.

Personally I have only DONE this twice in my life for a shared 56k dial-up connection long ago on 2 computers running Windows XP Pro in which 2 people needed internet access at the same time, high speed internet was not available at their location, and they did not want to pay 2x the cost for their internet requiring 2 dial-up accounts with their PROVIDER as well as did not want to have to add an additional phone line for a 2nd dial-up connection. So I set them up with 2 Windows XP Pro computers sharing a single dial-up connection as was the CHEAPEST solution for my customer, as well as set this up to work in my home for shared dial-up connection between my wife and I with computers back to back like 11 years ago. As long as no one was performing downloads and was only surfing and accessing e-mail or chatting online etc everything worked well. BUT if one or both people decided to download at same time through shared dial-up, you are looking at a coffee break x 2 in how long it would take to complete.

With broadband, I have only used a setup with a gateway where all internet went through 1 computer back when I was using a free SQUID Proxy to speed up frequently visited sites back when I first got broadband and only had a 1mbps upload and 4mbps download service plan with my ISP and was also using VoIP which was competing for bandwidth. But when that changed to 6mbps upload and 20mbps download there was no need to make it any faster, so I shut my SQUID Proxy off. SQUID can be used to make a computer act as a gateway for more than 1 other computer connecting through the shared internet connection. I believe that the Internet Connection Sharing back in the days of XP was limited to 1 other computer sharing the internet connection of the gateway system that was connected and sharing it.

It would APPEAR that something in your request is not clear.

Group policy is PART of the security system of Windows Networking. Only one or two persons should have this power. If you just now GOT this job from your boss, you should also have provided you with the METHODS needed to get into computers on the network.

Having said that, Have you read this introduction?

Solve : Lost wireless connection - laptop?

Answer»

System in question;
Aspire One D255E
Win7 starter, Intel 1.66, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD
adapters;
Atheros AR8152/8158 PCI-E (NDIS 6.20)
Broadcom 802.11n

Hey all - connectivity issue here. My sis has the above laptop. For a year or better, she has been wirelessly connected to her local network, via a Linksys E2000 router without issue.

Rather suddenly a couple of weeks back, she found she had no connection. There were no changes to this network that I'm aware of (the users don't even know how to change settings online for said network). Several available networks show up on the list (hers and a couple of unsecured neighbors I believe). Despite full bars for her local network, clicking 'connect' has no visible effect. Nothing happens. Not like a 'failed to connect' or something similar, just...nothing.

I went through various steps such as;
- assured that fn+F2 was not the issue, wireless is enabled
- power down, wait and reboot the modem, router, and her laptop, in that order
- 'hard' reset router at power up to restore defaults
- uninstalled network adapter(s) and reinstalled - with the company site's latest drivers - they installed, and 'ready to use' appeared
- ran the various (fairly useless) Windows network diagnostics which essentially told me I hadn't selected a network...which I had...repeatedly
- Swapped out router completely with another, with the same results
- Took laptop here, to a completely different network, again with the same results
- released/renewed IP on laptop
- reset TCP/IP with 'netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt' command

The local networks I'm attempting to connect to are unsecured - no password required, etc.

So, any idea what I should try next? My experience here is rather limited, and I've run out of ideas. Thanks much for any suggestions!

I've attached a text result of 'ipconfig all' for the laptop, and a screenshot of 'xirrus' running on same if it will help.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Two or three areas you need to explain.

B. You did not try and external wireless adapter. -Right?
C. The laptop can GET into the Internet using Ethernet cable?

Please confirm before we go ton the next stop.

What do you mean effect? No messages shown? Can you check the network and sharing center - Manage wireless network? Do you see the home network SSID from there? Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 25, 2013, 10:32:44 PM

Correct, I've tried three routers across two different networks now.

Yes, it connects STRAIGHT away when hard wired.

Yes, no messages, no connection. It simply doesn't respond in any way.

Yes I can access manage wireless network, but it is blank. I cannot 'add' network (clicking 'add' also has no visible effect at all, no messages, etc), apparently because I can't connect to any(?).This will be an ultra simple suggestion (sometimes the obvious is overlooked). On many laptops there is a key on the keyboard to enable/disable wireless. Has that inadvertently been turned off?truenorth
P.S. If that isn't it try to borrow an external wireless/usb dongle (you will also need the software for it) and install it on the laptop to see if you can connect wirelessly. If yes then it could be a failed wireless chip in the computer.Any warnings in device manager?Quote from: truenorth on January 26, 2013, 07:59:03 AM

No prob about simple suggestions - at this point I'd try submerging the thing in water...permanently. But no, the on/off for the wireless on this machine is the fn+F2 combo, and it's on. I've no access to a USB wireless deal, but am very close to purchasing one as I'm fresh outta' ideas! Literally, nothing. The button (connect to my network) depresses and there is no response at all. Same result on the previous network and the third router (all of which have other PCs connected to them).

Log in to your router then try changing the wireless mode from mixed mode to dedicated /n or /g alternately then check the difference.

Tried each alternately with no apparent change. Still no response when attempting to connect to network. Go to start and type services.msc - Enter, look for WLAN Autoconfig and check if its not disabled. Change it to Automatic and hit apply. Quote from: jason2074 on January 26, 2013, 09:43:23 AM

Yes, wireless LAN service is enabled, set to automatic and currently running. As a last resort, remove bonjour by add or remove programs and disable IPV6 -> Right-click the wireless adapter in Network connections and choose properties and uncheck Internet Protocol 6 (tcp/ipv6), ok. If nothing changes, I think you need to try a USB wifi adapter at this point as suspected by Truenorth earlier.

Solve : Thomson TG784 problem?

Answer»

For 2 days ago I got a new Thomson TG784 it was working just fine but then I SAW I had a much higher ping so I did some testing and saw that it wont let me use more then 300 kb/s when I have 800 kb/s, so the Thomson TG784 is blocking the rest of my 500 kb/s.

I have read the manual and that but I can't find anything that it should just allow 300 kb/s to my computer, so do anyone know why it's doing that? Are you using wireless access or wired?

If you are using wireless, you should first see if the problem is a wireless problem or not. You can do that by running an ethernet cable directly from your PC to the router. If that gives you full speed, then you know your connection and computer are fine, it's a wireless problem. If that's the case, I can't help you, but at least you will have more information.

But if you still have slow throughput with a cable, it's not a wireless problem, obviously. How far are you from your provider's central office (CO)? That is, how far does the cable run from your house to the phone company? Back when I was looking into DSL, Verizon confessed that I would only get half speed because I was so far from the CO (but I would still have to pay full price).Quote from: KenJackson on July 20, 2010, 05:34:59 PM

I am using wired.

I have no clue, but before I had 800 Kb/s and thats max I can get, because I live middle of nowhere (in town I can get 100 000 Kb/s) But I called my ISP and they said it could be the "Splitter" I TOLD them that it's noway it could be it, I just got it from the box. But they said they will send it over mail and I will call them again if it didn't work. it will take 15 days for the "Splitter" to come, it will take 3 days for the ISP guy to come and fix the problem so 12+6=18 So in 18 days my network will be working again.

Like if it could be so *censored* hard to send the ISP guy now instead of trying to be a "know it all" like I don't know it's the router that is the problem.

But Thanks anyway. Here's one other detail. I know of two people who have DSL whose routers (I don't think they are Thompson) go into a slow mode once in a while. To fix it, they cycle power on the modem. Is your router/router-modem from ISP has simultaneous connection with Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi capable aside from your extended router(Thomson)?. Have you run speedtest from your ISP modem alone? It may be a compatibility, DHCP, Firewall or Virus/Malware issue. Quote from: KenJackson on July 21, 2010, 10:21:05 PM

Slow mode? I don't think a router who can go into slow mode without anyone doing something, there must be something broken.

1.The Thomson TG784 is both Router and a modem in the same box.

I think I didn't hear that.
3.If I didn't run a speed test how would I know I can't get to my 800Kb/s?
4.I don't think a firewall can block 500Kb/s.
5.I also don't think a Virus/maleware can just HIDE 500Kb/s of Internet from you, there must be a big trace where it goes, like you downloading something all the time.

But as I said before the ISP guy will be here in like 18 days, so I'll be fine.

I don't see the router you are referring to.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Maybe he means "I found a router for $25". Using "this" is COLLOQUIAL in some parts of the English speaking world. The only answer we can give, considering the amount of information, is "Yes. Or maybe no. Or maybe."

or does he mean, can you get a decent $25 router or should he up the price a bit to make it worth his cabbage... No. For a good router you must pay $27 or more. US $.Quote from: Geek-9pm on July 16, 2010, 04:12:32 PM

Solve : Need help connecting between 2 ethernet jacks.?

Answer»

I have two ETHERNET CAT5e jacks in my house, ONE is in the bedroom and the other is in the basement. My computer that is in the bedroom has the internet modem CONNECTING to a wireless router.

Is it possible to connect my router to the bedroom's Ethernet jack which is thus CONNECTED to the basement's one? Since another computer that is in the basement has a ethernet cable connecting to the jack but I don't recieve anything but the network is unplugged error.

Any help would be appreciated. That depends on where the Ethernet jacks are terminating.

Are the jacks connected directly to each other? Are they connected to a SWITCH? I figured it out, they were just not connected to anything besides the terminal, thanks for the help though.

I would change that to an ip in the same subnet as your server. Since you have 192.168.0.150 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 (I assume, but make sure) then you can type 192.168.0.151 as the replacement. Just make sure the ip isn't used by other computers at home.

Solve : Access to security cameras?

Answer»

Hope I am In the right forum AREA. I have a business with multiple security cameras which I can access from outside world with proprietary software provided me by security camera vendor. I have a static IP address at main system. All router ports have been forwarded that are necessary. The local computer can connect but that is through the local IP, 189.168.x.x. with no problem. I can NOT connect to the cameras from any laptop or desktop that is using the same ISP but security people can connect from there location and I can also connect from most any place outside this main ISP. I have set up monitoring from various location from across country and they work just fine. In other words, all cameras can be monitored from any location except those on this ISP that camera system is on.
I am a bit at a loss for reason why except maybe an ISP problem. The ISP is a line of sight tower high speed system and works just great. Any insight would help me solve this dilemma. Have you talked to your ISP about this problem? From what you DESCRIBE it's got to be something they are doing. They MAY not even realize they are doing something to block some access. Not the most responsive ISP. Have several calls in to them. They are closed on weekends. Message service says they will call me, still waiting. Will try again Monday-Thanks.
Just wanted to see if it could be something they could do.
Will come back with results.I actually added a line or two to my last POST about how wireless ISPs usually are lacking in resources, but DELETED it at the last minute.

You are just going to need to keep after them to get the problem fixed. My guess is that they have one guy that really knows what is going on and he is being pulled in six different directions all the time.

this is Lynx:

this is the wikipedia page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynx_%28web_browser%29

It is the fastest browser, period, simply because it doesn't waste time downloading images and other amenities.

Measuring browser speed is completely retarded as far as I'm concerned. It's like arguing about wether Programming language A or Programming language B is better. The programming language isn't even close to as important for speed as the actual program itself, just like the browser used to interpret a web page is hardly as relevant as the content of the web page itself.

Various web sites claim to have "tested" browser speed using all sorts of tests. The tests are as meaningless in the context of actual web browsing as MANY so-called "programming language" tests are. Program A in Python could be faster then Program B in Perl, but there could just as easily be another set of programs that do the same thing but whose performance is reversed. Just as how two web pages could look exactly the same but have completely different "performance" numbers when it comes to browsers.

The entire concept of "performance testing" HTML is completely ridiculous. It's an interpreted markup language that contains interpreted script code. It's not something designed for speed, it was designed to be as easy as possible to change, edit, and work with. If HTML was supposed to be built for speed we'd have HTML compilers that parsed a page into some SORT of intermediary binary format and Javascript compilers that would insert machine code for every conceivable CPU code language. Saying "Browser A (of firefox, chrome, or IE, usually) is the best browser because it's the fastest" is like saying "I use C because it's the fastest programming language"- they are similar because, first, the stated browser is never "the fastest", which for browsers would either be lynx or a lynx fork of some sort, and for programming languages it's simply going to be machine code), and second, it's completely irrelevant. Even when you can whip up a quick perl or python script to do something in say 2 minutes and it takes an hour to make an equivalent program in "C", I highly doubt you are going to be running the program millions upon millions of times that the 5 millisecond difference (which I just made up, and this is assuming that the C version even runs faster, which is a guaranteed effect, and it's almost never as notable as 5 milliseconds difference) is never going to make back that wasted 58 minutes you spent "optimizing" your ridiculously simple program.

Interpreted programming languages exist because they they don't exist so that everybody can whip them out and measure them against each other. PHP is one of the most prevalent Web programming languages in existence, and it's a scripting language. but you don't see it used on windows desktops, where VBScript is the most commonly seen.

If we were really going for the fastest possible speed, we wouldn't have keyboards, we'd have flip switches where we all have to input the machine code instructions for the program and behaviour we want. Sure, it takes 50 years to start a game of solitaire, but it's a whole femtosecond faster at shuffling cards, so it's worth it, apparently.Thank you for your interest and your information

Solve : Existing wireless network can't share files with new Windows 7 laptop?

Answer»

I have an existing Dlink G network with a couple of Win XP laptops. Recently bought a new laptop with Windows 7, and COULD not join the existing workgroup to share files and printer. A little research told me that the windows versions are the problem. Is there any fix? That is not the CASE, I know for a fact that is not the issue because that is the same setup at my home. Now, for STARTERS, why not change the workgroup of the XP computers to match the WIN 7 workgroup? Or instead mapping the HDD's (hard drive device) of the XP computers and them mapping the HDD of the WIN 7 computer? You have several options at your disposal. From How-to-Geek

Solve : adding a 3rd computer?

the idea is that I can ACCESS the 3rd computer from EITHER of the other two
2 computers are running WINDOWS XP Pro the 3rd is running Ubuntu 8.04
If the new computer is close enough to be connected to the router via. an Ethernet cable, do this.

Alternatively, is there a wireless card in the computer? If so, tell the computer to connect wireless.

so, you want to network Windows and Ubuntu computers so that any of the 3 computers can see files on the other two, right? I have Windows and Ubuntu systems but have not networked them for file sharing between Windows and Ubuntu. All I can suggset is to do a Google search on networking windows and ubuntu and start researching it.

Solve : Someone making changes to Wikipedia using my IP address??

Answer»

Someone has been using my IP ADDRESS to edit wikipedia. I understand it might be a shared IP but I'm sort of worried since the user EDITED a page about a local hurling club which means he must live nearby.

I am on a wireless connection secure with a WPA2 password. Is there any way to find out if someone else has accessed my connection? It could be anyone from anywhere in the world, depending on your ISP. You can contact your ISP and ask them to change your IP if you have a static IP. Also see here: http://whatismyipaddress.com/change-ip - it may or may not work.He did post about a local club here in waterford Ireland so the user's likely nearbye. I'm not sure if I can HELP you, being from Tipperary.

You can try the technique in the link I POSTED above to change your IP. If it doesn't work you'll have to talk to your ISP.

I have a problem with installing a new VERSION of windows for my inspiron 8600 because I cannot run wifi. I would even be willing to download linux or something as long as i can use wifi internet. I am just looking for the easiest and fastest solution to get connected to my wifi internet as QUICKLY as possible. Thanks in advance.Try This:
Click on "START", Right click on "My Computer, click "Manage", and a window called "Computer Management" should pop up. Click on "Device Manager", and look for "network adapters". If your WiFi card is in there, and it has a yellow exclamation point next to it, you most likely need the drivers for it. Just google your card, and download it's driver. If it is not in the "network adapters" area, it is in the "other DEVICES" area.

You said turned on Modem first, then router, and then computers. I don't know how to turn on the modem and router, should I unplug their transformers first before to reset them? or what?
4- I turned on the computer 2, I SAW the LED light on the the remote unit blinking, but didn't come up Google logo, instead showed up 'can not display web page' message.

What wrong I did? or should I do something else on computer 2?

Solve : PXE Booting Workstation from Server?

Answer»

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a low cost or FREE software solution to be able to boot off of Intel Pro 100+ Managed Network Adapters that support PXE Booting, and run a GUI Operating System or GUI Terminal SESSION on a driveless computer ( dumb terminal )

I have a bunch of systems that can act as terminals and I have a system that can act as DHCP and PXE service SERVER, but I dont know where to go from here.

I have seen businesses run workstation terminals this way, but havent had the FUN of seeing the server side configuration to make this work.I would try following this guide:
http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu_pxe_install_server_p4
Just follow the guide, and replace the OS'es to boot with what ever you want (eg, ubuntu)Cool...Thanks for info. Gonna check that out

Solve : Unable to connect to network?

Answer»

Hi

This problem I have seems to have developed rather slowly over a number of weeks/months. At first my computer would sometimes disconnect from the NETWORK and would be unable to reconnect, if i restarted my computer or switched to my PCI Wireless adapter i could get back on. But very recently it has been unable to connect at all. I have tried 3 different wireless adapters (2 USB 1 PCI Card) none of which will connect. I've REINSTALLED all their drivers, factory reset the router, I even reinstalled my OS and had to format my C: DRIVE but it still won't connect. I'm at a loss as to what the problem is.

If you can help but need extra details let me know.

Thanks in advance. Some laptops have a switch to turn on or off the wireless antenna. Usually fn+F2 or a switch on the side. U might have to check with the laptop manufacture for instructions. It could be that the wireless router is DIEING, is there another one you can test with?Try this simple tests:
1- go to CMD (command prompt) and type "ping 127.0.0.1"
This is a Software test for your NIC called a loop back test. u should not loose any pockets
2- ping your IP address this will test your NIC. This will test your NIC to see if it receives
and send packets. If u loose packets it might be time for a new NIC.
3- ping the IP address of the router. if u lose packets to n from the router, will u need to get a new one.
Write back n let us know the results.Sorry for reviving this dead post, as to the above poster I did all those tests and didn't lose a single packet, still getting the same problem occasionally though, still haven't figured it outIf all the test came back with 0% loss. Then it has to be a SW, configuration problem. It is not a hardware problem. U need to check all configuration on the router n Host. I'm finding odd results depending on what port the USBs are plugged into, is there any sort of USB fix/test I can try ?hello friends

i am new to this forum , i am john smith . i like to make friends

i am not able to connet to network at my office.. always i am getting network is offline , i am not sure how to come out. please if any person know the answer please reply me,

Solve : Can't share news articles etc..?

Answer»

Please help I am useless at how my netbook/LAPTOP works I have a facebook page which I SHARE news articles but I can't share any more from my acer netbook, I don't have a clue what I have done wrong, everything was fine until I decided to add to my toolbar (why did I do that) any way I can share news articles if I go on my mobile or my daughters laptop (my daughter objects to anyone using her laptop especially me). So please can anyone help this computer illiterate person solve my 'sharing information' problem so that when I hit the share buttons I can connect to my facebook page and share instead of just watching a message telling me they are waiting for fb I really need to be able to share my news articles again please can anyone help me. Thanks Yvette. Are you sure you are not disconnecting from the Internet, at any time ?

If the problem seemed to have started after installing something, as you stated, you should first try uninstalling that software.. Start>Control Panel>Add remove programs>... find the program/tool that you installed, highlight it and click remove..

If that doesn't work, post in the virus-removal forum here to check your computer for viruses, to out the possibility of viruses..

If viruses are not the problem post back here to continue the TROUBLESHOOTING process...I have gone in to the control panel and restored my computer settings, I tried to restore it back even further but it wouldn't allow that. I have only had the netbook a about 6 weeks so I don't mind going back to default settings but I can't do that! I don't know if that's because I installed norton if I went back further it wouldn't be protected (I had Mc vee something for 30 days before I installed norton) I went into the google bar and restored settings there also it must be a problem with my acer netbook because I can share from my mobile and other laptops. Thanks for posting. I hate stuff going wrong with computers because I just don't have a clue.I have managed to solve my problem I ran the Nortons apparently I had turned my Nortons off by mistake...Problem solved thankfully.

Solve : Something got wrong with laptop wireless...?

Answer»

Hi guys! My mother bought a nice laptop with win7 and wireless. She told me she messed with the controls of the wireless and now it doesnt want to connect to my router. We have another laptop that can connect so I guess its not from the router. What should I do? I am a total noob with wireless, because I never before had a laptop before. The laptop can connect to the neighbors router tho -.- and the signal is very weak (while from my router the signal is perfect). We use a cable to connect the laptop to the router for now. So can anyone help me? When I try to connect to my signal, it SAYS "windows was unable to connect". If I click on troubleshoot problems, it detects that "windows cant connect to hidden network A (lets call A - my router and B - neighbors network). Usually when I click on the wireless CONNECTION tray button I can SEE under "currently connected to" B as a bench and A as a house. Under them I can see B - Connected, A - not connect i guess, and a lot of other networks. So what should I do :?Does your router have push to connect technology? what i mean is, is there a button on you router that allows you to add clients to your router by pushing that button. if you could post the make of your router it would be quite helpful.... Also this maybe a dumb question but sometimes its the stupid question that SOLVES the problem. Are you trying to connect to the right wireless internet? No way you can STOP it connecting to a particular router. only was is if shes entered the wrong PW. but i doubt there highly.

I agree with above^^^^

Solve : IMPORTANT PLEASE....?

Answer»

Thank you for READING my question.... I have two computers both having windows operating systems. I am planning to cluster them. I have connected them using an RJ-45 ethernet crossover CONNECTOR cable.... I want to make a network with "Computer 2" as the host computer.....

Computer 1 has Windows 7 Ultimate as its operating system....
Computer 2 has Windows Server 2003 as the operating system....

Both computers are connected but do not find a network. It shows that the cable is working and it tries to find an IP, i.e. find a network to connect to, sometimes the state is known as "LIMITED connectivity". This thus shows the fact that it is working. But does not find a network.

I wish to make a network with "Computer 2 as the host computer....I believe you have to statically assign IP addresses to each computer in that type of SETUP.. Use the following tutorial:

http://www.home-network-help.com/crossover.html

To configure Server 2003 use the XP set up instructions... For Windows 7, there is a DIRECT link..

Do you plan on connecting these computers to the Internet ?

Solve : On my home network one computer is not shown?

Answer»

I have two COMPUTERS in my home network. Both are running Windows XP. One (the HP Pavilion) is running the MEDIA edition and the other (the Dell Optiplex GX-260) is running professional edition.
The I have run the network setup wizard on both computers. When I go the My Network Places> Entire Network> Microsoft Windows Network> myhomegroup on either computer the name of the Dell computer is DISPLAYED but the name of the HP computer is not displayed. I can do a search for the HP computer from the Dell computer and it will be found. So I know that it is accessible.
At one time, long ago when the predecessor to the Dell was in the network I could see both computers in the WORKGROUP, but one day I noticed that the HP computer had disappeared from the list. So I am thinking that either I did something or I ran a program that did something on the HP computer to prevent it from appearing in the workgroup list. I don't believe that it was anything that I did immediately before I noticed its disappearance; so I have no idea what could have caused it to disappear from the list or how to make it reappear.
Has anyone in this forum seen this before? If so, can you tell me what causes this to ccurr and how to fix it?Try this: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/20094-42-problem-workgroupQuote from: jason2074 on July 30, 2010, 11:09:34 PM

Try this: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/20094-42-problem-workgroup

I looked that over and it does not provide me anything that I have not already done, other than setting the workgroup after running the wizard. Since I am not adding a new computer to the network it does not seem apropos to my situation. In actuality the computer that cannot be seen is the one that has been on the network the longest and the one that can be seen is the one that was most recently added.

I think that I posed this question in the wrong forum and that it should have been posted in the network forum. I have been looking for a way to remove it from this forum but that must be a power reserved to the moderators. Nor can I see a way to lock it.Probably a 3RD party firewall...Since I am not running a third party firewall on either computer, I doubt that is the case.

Please read my other similarly named topic, it contains additional information that might be pertinent to a correct solution to this problem.

Solve : One computer on my home network is not shown?

Answer»

I posted this query earlier in the Windows XP forum, but then realized that that was not the appropriate place to post it. So moderators, if you would please forgive me and delete the post over there and let this one stay, I would really appreciate it.

I have home network with two computers both hardwired to a Linksys Cable/DSL 4-port router which connects to my DSL modem. Both computers are running Windows XP. One (the HP Pavilion) is running the media edition and the other (the Dell Optiplex GX-260) is running professional edition. Neither have a fire wall running on them as I have the firewall in the router. I have run the network setup wizard on both computers.

When I go the My Network Places> Entire Network> Microsoft Windows Network> myhomegroup on either computer the name of the Dell computer is displayed but the name of the HP computer is not displayed. Same thing if I run net view from a command prompt, only the Dell computer shows in the list on both computers. I can do a SEARCH for the HP computer from the Dell computer and it will be found. After doing the search for the HP, I can access files on the HP from the Dell. So I know that it is accessible. Neither computer has any trouble accessing the internet. I have CHECKED the TCP/IP information on both computers, it is identical, both have Obtain IP address automatically, Obtain DNS server address automatically and Automatic private IP address set.

At one time, long ago, when the predecessor to the Dell was connected to the network I could see both computers in the workgroup, but one day I noticed that the HP computer had disappeared from the list. Even though the HP computer was gone from the list I could still access files on it from the other computer and of course I could access the other computer from the HP. So I am thinking that either I did SOMETHING or I ran a program that did something on the HP computer to prevent it from being visible in the workgroup list; but I don't RECALL having done any messing around with the network immediately prior to noticing the HP's disappearance. I seem to recall that it may have disappeared after my son-in-law connected his laptop to the network via a cable (I have no wireless in the house), but I could be mistaken about that. Other than that I have no idea what could have caused the HP to disappear from the list or how to make it reappear in the list.

Has anyone in this forum encountered this before? If so, can you tell me what may have caused this to occur and, more importantly, how to fix it? I would really like to be able to browse to the files on the HP from the Dell.

Also, since connecting the Dell to the network I cannot access it from the HP. I GET that annoying error message telling that I don't have rights to access the Dell computer and to contact my network administrator. Well, I am my network administrator and I have no idea how to resolve the situation. I have enabled file and printer sharing on the Dell. Do I need to reboot either one or both computers before that takes effect? If rebooting is not the answer, what else do I need to do?Quote from: binghamjc on July 31, 2010, 01:16:27 AM

I seem to recall that it may have disappeared after my son-in-law connected his laptop to the network via a cable (I have no wireless in the house), but I could be mistaken about that.
Perhaps it would be more correct to say that I first noticed that the HP was no longer visible in the workgroup after my son-in-law had connected his laptop to the network. This is not to imply that connecting his laptop to the network caused the problem, just that I did not notice the problem until he did that. The problem may have occurred earlier than that, but I did not notice it until then.

Solve : Cable Modem Reset?

Answer»

Hello all,

I have a problem. Currently I only experience this on my desktop and I guess I'm quite CONFUSED on how to fix it. If I start to download or upload a large file my cable modem will reset itself automatically for no reason. Well there is a reason, I just can't figure out why. Somehow I guess I'm bottlenecking it to death to the point of reset but if anyone has any ideas on how to fix this, I would appreciate it greatly.

Thank you,
SierobinI do not know that I can help you with the technical aspects of your problem, in fact I am pretty sure I can't.
However, unless you can supply more information like the type of cable modem (manufacturer and model), perhaps file sizes of files that cause the reset and file sizes of ones that do not cause it, I am pretty sure no one else can either.
Have you CONTACTED customer support at your cable supplier? This only occurs if I'm uploading large files or downloading large files say over 1GB or around that.

Sorry for the lack of information but it is an Arris TM402P VOIP Broadband Modem.

No I didn't contact Comcast yet, since it only happens in particular CASES and only with MY desktop, none of the other computers in the house.

Thank you for the reply though.

I have to go for now... be back later, if you haven't fixed it... Post your specs..

Please try the wired connection. Can't get online with wired connection as I'm not sure of passwords, etc to set up a new connection.
The make/model of my laptop is: Sony Vaio VPCEB1EOEyou shouldn't need a PASSWORD to set up a connection. It should just be plug & play.Just tried again and it's not recognising the connection....?Download this (WinsockFix) from another computer and put it on a thumb drive..

Run it on the problem laptop, reboot and try connecting via wifi

Pinging IP worked -

That confirms that you don't have a hardware problem anywhere. This is clearly a software problem... A thumb drive is a flash drive, you know, those little memory sticks that you store on your keychain ? They have a million names and they go into a USB port.

Download that program from another computer, put it on a thumb drive, walk it over to your problem laptop and run WinsockFix, reboot the comupter and try connecting via wifi... If it doesn't work, the only other thing I can SUGGEST is using a bootable anti-virus program to check for viruses or backing up all your data and REINSTALLING... I don't think it's worth putting much more time into..I'll give all that a go then! Many thanks yep

Solve : Adhoc gateway??

Answer»

Hey,

Im locally hosting a website on my laptop, pretty much a chat room page. When users connect I want them to go directly to that my website when trying to browse

Kind of like a gateway wireless page but on an adhoc network

Purpose is for school, my n card covers quite a lot of the school grounds and would be awesome to have some sort of chat room system going (:

Any help appreciated

Thank you
Is your machine currently the gateway for internet connections? If so, you just need to muck with the DNS a bit to make all DNS point to your site, and then reset DNS correctly afterwards

But if there is a different gateway machine, you're out of luck, you can't 'force people' to go to your site without EXPLOITING securityah okay, I've setup a xxamp server to host it,

But im still confused with this dns tweaking part, I am the gateway and everything is hosting on this one pc.

What sort of tweaking would I need to do? Im a little confused

Regards

MacuiareWell, Admittedly I've never played around with it myself, and the concept is likely easier then the execution.

when the gateway machine initially leases an IP Address to the client and sends a DNS server, that DNS Server must be initially configured to return the same IP Address to that client regardless of what DNS lookup is preformed.

So if the user initially connects open's their web browser and goes to www.google.ca your DNS server must send your IP Address of your apache box back.

You apache needs to be configured to return the same web page regardless of what domain name header is sent to apache.

Then your apache page needs a link/button, that when clicked, resets the DNS to proper lookup functionality for the client.

You could probably do this with a wildcard in your DNS entry that is added/removed as NEEDED and I would imagine there is software out there that already does this.

It would take some time playing around with, and it the end would probably be CHEAPER just to by a router that already does this for youyea, I figured it would require such D:

Thankyou for the help and information, I'm going to REVIVE one of my sme VIRTUAL pc's and see if that will shed some light on the idea, back to researching.

Thanks again

(:Hi,

I'm guessing your on a MAC?

I'm also gessing that you adjusted the proxy server settings to point to your mom's proxy server.

So when you are not at your mom's you need to remove this setting.

It's under FIREFOX->Preferences->Advanced->Network. Look for the text"

Configure how Firefox connects to the Internet"

CHOOSE the option "Direct Connection to the Internet" when at your dad's

Choose the option for the proxy server when at your mom's.

Picture attached. Might be a little different depending on which MacOS you are using, and which verion of Firefox

Hope this helps

As the title states, I were on chat trying to fix the problem. I got the driver and installed it, yet my ethernet-unti won't update, nor does it find the driver.

PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_001C&SUBSYS_137B103C&REV_01\4&23F5EDAD&0&00E0

This is the unit-ID

Thanks in advance! We weren't on chat with you, so please PROVIDE the entire story so we KNOW what you're talking about.Ah, I'm sorry.

I was trying to fix my Ethernet-unit to get wireless NETWORK, working. I was sent a link to the appropriate driver, I installed it but the Ethernet-unit wouldn't update. And that is pretty much the story. That's not NEARLY enough information. Unlike chat, we don't GUESS at what you're talking about or how to fix it. We need all pertinent information before we can offer intelligent advice.

1) I don't know what an "Ethernet-unit" is. Do you mean your ethernet card? If not, please explain what you are talking about.
2) Did it ever work? If so, what happened between the last time it worked and the first time it didn't (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?
3) What is your setup (computers, router, network, etc)?

My lap doesn't support N range.

Your laptop might not support n range technology, but it will still work with your router, you just won't get the high speeds available in N technology.

One "range" of your laptop is 300 FT. APPROX.. (802.11/g) 802.11/n has the same range but faster speeds..btw, the two specified cards you are considering will work with your laptop..

Get the drivers for them here

Hi !

thanks for your information , I THOUGHT just to buy a wi-fy N usb adapter because I'am having 3 years warranty for my laptop. The sellers who sold me this lap, says that they wont replace Network cards.
So I have to do it my own risk.I dont want to hassle for this. If I open the cover I will lose my warranty.

I think not yet one year pass from 3 years.International warranty......

So BETTER to use a usb....No risk at all. Even can use for desktop also .....

Solve : Cannot Connet to Internet?

My laptop cannot connect to the internet wireless as it cannot get an IP address. It sees my wireless connection but it still shows an IP address of 0.0.0.0 and SUBNET mask of the same 0's. My desktop computer is Vista 64 bit but the problem laptop is an IBM T42 runinning Windows XP. Any one has any ideas that I can try to get an IP address and be able to run the laptop wireless?
Was it ever able to connect? Can it connect if you plug it into the modem directly? It works if I use Ethernet but it will not work wireless.
It used to work months ago but I had not used it for quite a while wirelessly and needed it now and had to hook it up to the wire from the desktop computer to make it see the Internet.
Again, I see the signal at home but it cannot find the address and times out.
I am using an old laptop which hooks up wirelessly fine but it is extremely SLOW with the Internet and I was trying to get this newer one to work.U might have the wireless TURN off on the laptop. Go to manufacture website follow direction on TURNING on the wireless antenna. When I get to the "Wireless LAN" screen I see 100% signal strength / excellent signal quality and the radio is powered on (it has a button that toggles between Power On wireless radio and Power OFF wireless radio).I run cmd and IPCONFIG/all and it gives me that "an internal error occurred: a device attached to the system is not functioning"
What does that mean?I ran a Network DIagnostics from Internet Explorer and it states that:

Windows is not currently managing the wireless network

Winsock diagnostics states that connectivity is valid for all winsock service providers

Networker connection STATUS: Media disconnected

HTTP, HTTPS,FTP Diagnositc: I get Error 1207 on all (HTTP, FTP, HTTPS
All that means is that u r not connecting to the internet (wireless network). U will have to check your all setting SSID, Password and channel for the wireless device u r trying to connect. By the post and results it seems the wireless network is working. The problems lays in making a connect to the wireless network. By getting a file to repair winsock and deleting some file (I forget the name) that appear not to do anything finally got it to work.

Solve : Just reformatted PC, need basic help connecting to the internet again.?

Answer»

There are no yellow exclamation marks, and the only NETWORK adapters are the two LAN ones that came with the CD of drivers and this 1394 one that's been here from the beginning. Any ideas?Let's try again. When you look under "network adapters" in device manager what do you see? And btw, I'll be logging off for the evening in a few minutes. No, that's what I mean, under "network adapters" in the device manager, there are the three I just mentioned: the two LAN ones that came with the CD of drivers and this 1394 one that's been here from the beginning. I actually wasn't banging on about network CONNECTIONS again. So, if there is an internal adapter, it doesn't seem LIKE my computer is recognising it... which is strange, as it did before. Someone else has just told me I should search for WLAN drivers - I'm guessing this isn't right, otherwise there would be a yellow exclamation mark somewhere in the device manager?

Thanks for all your help, by the way. It is greatly appreciated. If your system has internal wifi capability and if you installed the chipset driver, then the wifi link should be VISIBLE in device manager under "network adapters".I installed a chipset driver, one which came on an MSI CD. Perhaps it isn't the correct one?

Alternatively, my PC could not have internal wifi capabilities. But if that's the case, how did I manage to connect to the network with it before I reformatted?I don't know what else to tell you. Installing the chipset driver after formatting should enable all internal networking capabilities. If the laptop has internal wifi functionality then you should see it. Either I'm missing something (and that's certainly possible) or the laptop is not wifi capable. Please post the laptop model that you post as wi-fi capable and is having connection problems.I don't remember saying it was a laptop? It's a PC, a desktop. It was custom-built by a technician, so it doesn't have a particular model. I can give you guys the information from dxdiag if you like?

Basically, before I reformatted the PC, I could access the wireless network. I didn't need to have anything in my USB socket, I just turned it on and it connected to the wireless network. The only piece of hardware needed is the modem router. Now, after reformatting and despite having installed the chipset driver, my computer still won't even recognise a wireless network. Going by what somebody else told me, I was thinking I maybe had to install a WLAN driver, but I just don't know which.Contact the person who built the pc.Ok then you need to open up your CPU(desktop) to be able to identify your add-on wi-fi card to be able to install correct driver if your not able or not sure what it is. The network card basically has some information pertaining to your issue. If you've check on device manager and it does'nt show, then you may need also to reconnect the card from its slot to see if it still working. Then check again on device manager if its being recognized.

Although the article needs some EDITING, it presents the ideas.

Let me put it this way. As a metaphor.
In the USA a major highway intersection has tragic lights to control the trafic.
In some countries they have e have a circular intersection.
In other places the have a tragic cop in the middle of the intersection.
Places that have non of the above are Ad-Hoc.

Ad hoc is a Latin phrase which, literally, means "For this". It generally signifies a solution designed for a specific problem or task, non-generalizable.

In other words, near chaos. The piratical limit is about three or four computers.

Geek, I think you need to do a little work on your speech recognition software.

And on your "couldn't care less" attitude towards the people who you expect to read the usually unedited and frequently silly nonsense you post. Why can't you spell "traffic" and "practical"?
Yes, I can not spill wright.
Ad-Hoc is also not in my spell-check thing.
The bottom line.
Using Ad-hoc wireless is a poor choice. It is best used in an environment where neither security or performance are matters of concern.
Example: A rural community has a few classrooms where the TEACHERS and students get along very well. Being able to freely exchange information and resources are the objective. They do not need rules. They make there own rules as needed. They use technology to expand their ability to share.
Ad-hoc is not suitable in an environment where people needlessly criticize your work. Ad-Hoc works well among people that have mutual respect and truly want to help each other.
That was the point I wanted to make to the OP.

Now. About how to do Ad-Hoc

Nice article:
Understanding Ad Hoc Mode By Jim Geier

PDF document:
Tutorial on Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

Both of these are very helpful. If the OP STILL has questions, he can come back here anytime and get my sassy misspelling response, grammatically and linguistically impaired.........

Solve : I.P. address?

Answer»

There are 50 pcs in our local network.some of he pcs are provided with internet IP address & only these pcs have permission to access the Internet. So the other users are hacking the IP addresses and using internet services. We want to prevent them from editing I.P. address in network properties window. Please HELP me out.So your router is configured to block certain IP addresses from accessing the internet, right?

You could always try changing the users computers that AREN'T allowed to access the internet to have a limited user account. On the computer(s) you don't want on the internet you can use gpedit.msc to deny them the ability.

Click start, (on xp then click run) type "gpedit.msc" go to User Configuration>Administrator Templates>Network>Network Connections. Double click Prohibit access to properties of a LAN connection, set to enable. You can adjust what else you need to also. Just don't let them see you do this then they can change it back!

Good LuckIt sounds like you have a big problem and need to hold the people who are hacking IP address accountable for their actions.

There are several commercial programs that monitor all computer useage. There are some that are specifically designed to monitor internet useage. With an internet monitoring program you could even turn on internet useage for EVERYONE, and monitor who goes where and for how long.

There's a big difference between someone who goes to weather.com for a minute and someone that spends all day on a porn site.

If you gave internet access to everyone, you would need to lay out the rules, let them know they are being monitored, and what the consequences for abuse would be.Assuming all of your computers are Windows, Group Policy would be the best way to do it. Is your network part of a domain or a workgroup? In a domain structure, you can set the group policy in Active Directory, which would be the most efficient way to do it. If you're on a workgroup, you'll have to go to each computer individually and set group policy as joe3fl stated.

Without knowing more about your network infrastructure, we can't really give much more advice.Quote from: prasil on August 10, 2010, 10:48:18 AM

What are you using to control which IPs have access?

I know in ISA Server 2004/2006 (and, presumably Forefront THREAT Management Gateway 2010) there are plenty of options for RESTRICTING Internet access. Instead of using IP addresses, try prohibiting User Names instead. It's a lot easier to control that instead of having to make a ton of DHCP reservations or manually assigning static IPs to every PC.

Either way, if users within the network are changing their IP addresses, then not only do they need to be accountable, but a Group Policy should be in place preventing them from doing that in the first place.

User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Network -> Network Connections:
Enable "Prohibit Access to the properties of a LAN connection"

User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Start Menu and Taskbar:
Enable "Remove Run menu from Start Menu"

User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Control Panel
Enable "Prohibit Access to the Control Panel"

User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Desktop
Enable "Hide Network Locations from Desktop"

User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> CTRL+ALT+DEL options
Enable "Remove Task Manager"

User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System
Enable "Prevent access to REGISTRY editing tools"
Enable "Prevent access to the command prompt"
You could simply establish one DMZ on the network for internet usage and one DMZ on the network without internet usage. Then just apply the corrispoding IP Adress to the corrisponding computors and make the administrator the only one with capabilities of changing the IP Adresses. Sounds like you got a roudy bunch of computer nerds working for you.

Solve : belkin router please help?

Answer»

Belkin 54G router Lan port 1 blinks on and off and has nothing running to the computer. was working fine and no chnges were made before this happened. And my computer acts as if there is a network cable plugged in yet i cant access the internet or therouters IP Address, but wors fine on the playstation which is plugged into port 2. Any thoughts?Turn the computer off.

On your router, you'll FIND a pinhole marked "Reset".
Keep pushing the hole, using a pencil, or a paperclip until all LIGHTS briefly come off and on.
Restart computer and see how it goes.
Tried that with no avail, all ports work with the PS3, but none worked wired to the computor, only flashing. I have tried diffrent CABLES with no change. Contacted Belkin who said TCP/IP was corrupted and needed to be reset. They were obviously wrong cause that had no effect. I am now believing that it may not be the router but the network adapter or its drivers. How would I find out?It could possibly be a bad NIC on the router. You could try PLUGGING into a different NIC on the router and see if that has any affect.thanks partner, i finaly fixed it, somehow my computers mac address went dynamic or SOMETHING and i had my router set up to only allow certain mac addresses, told the router to allow the new address and im back in buisness, thanks for all your help, this site is amazing

Solve : no network connection?

Answer»

I use Windows XP SP2 on a Gateway PC. It is connected to a Belkin 54g router. Everythin worked fine until yestarday. I use a static ip address on the router to connect the PC to. yestarday the connection light on the router that displays when a cable is connected into a certain port began a slow flash and I lost all connection to the internet and to the router. The adapter should be working because when you unplug the cable, a MESSAGE appears at the bottom that displays a network cable has been unplugged. Then I was told that the (TCP/IP) was corrupted and needed to be reset, so I reset it. Same problem. Could the network just quit working permenetly or maybe a driver needing to be replaced. Also the PC dosent work directly connected to the modem or with a diffrent network cable that obviously works the PS3 or I wouldn't be ABLE to post this. All help appriciatedIf the modem works with other devices but not this particular pc, it could be a bad ethernet card.how could I find out short of replacing it, cause im affraid you may be right, but I don't want to spend the money on a replacement and the agony of replacing it unless I know it is neccessary.Replacing the card is a 10 minute job at most. Just purchase it from a retailer who will TAKE it back if you don't need it (most retailers accept hw returns). It is not an expensive item.Ok you got me there but isnt there a way to check and diagnose the driver of the card.Sure. You can try the card in a different computer.ok, just put in a new 3com ethernet card which automatically configured and the light is now steady on the router, yet still no connection.Try resetting the router (disconnect it from power for 20 seconds then reconnect) and reboot the computer in needed. Also, what happens if you connect directly to the modem?done that for over a minute on modem router and pc, still nothing, and device manager says drivers are fineSo there is no network connection if yo connect directly to the modem and there are no errors in device manager, is that correct? Have you checked Network Settings in Control Panel to see if the connection shows there?correct and gives the same ip address when modem or router is setup automatically with the message limited or no connectivity, and a solid connection whe manually entering my dmz address, with the exception of no internet or even the ability to access the routers ip addressfigured it out, somehow my mac address went dynamic or something and just decided to change and I have no idea how, but I told my router to recognize the new and Im back in business, THANKS this site is amazingGlad you got it sorted out.

Solve : IP address confusion...?

Answer»

Okay here's the issue:

When I tried to search ONLINE on how to find my IP address, a come across websites which can search and tell me my IP address and twice I go to that website on two different days, I got IP address which started with 60.##.###.## and the numbers at the #'s are different.

Then I came across a website which says use the Ipconfig COMMAND in the cmd.exe. I did that and my IP there starts with 192.###.#.###

Now I am confused with which is my IP address. Btw, I am using my laptop which is connected to my home modem through a router (just in case this might help).
You IP address can change everyday.

Your internet provider only has so many addresses. So when others are offline, they re-use them. Or "LEASE" then for a time period.

You can create a static IP address, but i'm not sure of the implecations of doing so.I did some searching on the web and I found out that apparently, the 192.###.#.### is my internal IP address and the 60.##.###.## is what the web sees.

The THING is, I am using a stat counter for my website and I want to block my IP so that whenever I visit my website, it won't include me in my count. So, I should be using the 192.###.#.### IP address is it?Quote from: Flazzard on July 23, 2010, 07:41:25 AM

think about it. you said that 60.##.###.## is what the web sees.

is not a stat counter on the web?Your router's ip address should be 192.168.xxx.xxx depending on manufacturer, and your ISP will have a diffrent IP address. Try getting online and searching for the default IP address for your router and then again for your ISP.Quote from: Flazzard on July 23, 2010, 07:41:25 AM

No. You should use the public IP address...theoretically.

In practice, what you're doing won't WORK, since your public IP address is Dynamic, not Static.

Businesses tend to have static IP addresses. Usually they'll have that for web servers, mail servers, FTP servers, etc. that are facing the Internet.

If you want a static IP address, contact your Internet Service Provider. Chances are, the price will be out of your price range.

Another option WOULD be to use something like DynDNS or some other dynamic DNS service. That way you'll have a host name that resolves to whatever public IP address your Internet Service Provider's DHCP server feels like giving you at the time. At that point, you may be able to filter your dynamic DNS name from stats instead of your IP.

Solve : What is happening when the receive or send button are blinking on my modem??

Answer»

..but the online LED is not on and I can't go to any web pages?

The modem is Motorola SB5101 and I use a router - a level one model WBR-6011. I have TWC internet.

...then I can't go to any webpages.

For me to be online as I understand it, the power led, the receive, and send and the online leds should all be on. The modem is not in stand-by and my cable TV is working fine.

I have no internet and the receive led will BLINK. Then, the receive will be solid and the send will blink but the online LED is still not on. Then it will go back to just the receive LED blinking. Just going by the modem the problem is with TWC, right?

I'm asking because I'm getting ready to call their service NUMBER yelling. It HAPPENED for ALMOST two hours just now and I checked their network status and it says green.

Recap - everything's fine then the lights go out on the cable modem and I have no internet.

Contact your ISPAs Allan said, contact your Internet Service Provider (what "ISP" stands for). Whatever the problem may be, they'll be able to resolve it far better than we can, as it could be a number of things:

1) PROBLEMS with the outside cables.
2) Problems with the company getting you the signal.
3) Problems with the modem.
4) You forgot to pay your bill. (embarrassing to admit, it's happened to me).It happened again and I called and they said they balanced something. Of course I asked and it has nothing to do with money.

Solve : Increase the range of Router??

Answer»

I have just changed over to BT Internet with their Home HUB 2, but find the wireless coverage is not as good as my previous router. I have decided to connect the new router to the Laptop using the ethernet cable, but find that I am unable to pick up the wireless signals with my iPhone 3 GS very far from the router. Is there any way that I can extend the range of the router? I have seen advertised a unit that replaces the antenna of the router, but the Home Hub 2 does not have an external antenna. Before I could connect the iPhone any where in the house and garden. If it's a proprietary-branded router, then your options for boosting the signal may be limited.

What you could do is use your OLD router as a wireless access point (or "WAP"). To do this:

1) Connect your PC or laptop to your old router.
2) Log into it using whatever IP address it's using (usually 192.168.1.1) and whatever user name and password you use to get into it.
3) Change the IP address to something that is NOT the same as your Home Hub 2, but is on the same subnet. For example, if your Home Hub 2 is 192.168.1.1, make your old router 192.168.1.2. VERY IMPORTANT!!!
4) Turn OFF DHCP on your old router!! This means that it should not be giving out IP addresses.
5) CLICK whatever "Save changes" button there is on the router's page.
6) Disconnect your PC from the router.
7) Connect your "Home Hub 2" (or whatever it's called) to the old router using the LAN ports (the numbered ports, usually 1, 2, 3, or 4). Do NOT use the WAN/Internet port on your old router!
Connect your laptop back to the Home Hub 2 network (via wireless, wired, or whatever).
9) Log into the Home Hub 2. Disable the wireless radio.

Voila! Now you've got yourself your old wireless coverage back while, at the same time, using your new Internet service! Thanks very much for your reply. Will give it a go. Thanks again. Pete.
