Solve : Cannot access external website as our internal domain is the same...?

Answer»

Don't KNOW if this is the right place to ask, but we are having some problems here with our setup. Our internal domain name is the same as our EXTERNAL website, so whenever we try to access our website, it don't work. Any ideas? Someone had said something to me about SPLIT DNS but I have no idea how to set that up, still kinda learning the ins and outs of this place. I can get any information needed, but don't really know what would be required to get this FIXED. Appreciate any help.

Solve : Windows VISTA and Cisco Client VPN Error 56: The Cisco Systems, Inc. VPN Service?

Answer»

We have a couple of machines that were running Cisco VPN Client (5.0.01.06) and worked, but suddenly do not. On one machine we are getting Error 56: The Cisco Systems, Inc. VPN Service has not been started). I have tried several suggestions that I found online and none seemed to RESOLVE the issue. I uninstalled the program and removed all REGISTRY keys and still no success. Others online reported having the same issue because of firewalls and anti-virus programs, but I removed all of those also (just to test). When manually start ing the VPN process, it starts, but within 30 seconds, stops automatically. I have tried rolling the registry back, but it doesn't go back before the initial install of the client. I have run spyware programs and anti-virus to make sure the machine is fine. It is only a few months old.

The second machine that was working with the VPN client and now isn't is a laptop, but his error is: Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the client. Reason 442: failed to ENABLE Virtual Adapter. Cisco suggested adding a registry key (HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters /v ArpRetryCount /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f) which didn't work. I also tried Enabling the virtual adapter - repair - and disabling it again (along with complete uninstalls and reinstalls). I found and downloaded the latest version of the Cisco Client Version 5.0.02.0090. This didn't clear the error. This is a Gateway laptop with WINDOWS Vista Ultimate 32-bit.

wow... this topic has over 1800 views, and 1 reply that simply quotes the original post.

odd.Berlin, did you resolve these VPN errors? If so, how did you do it?

If not, did you try disabling the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service?

The second problem you described seems to require a more complex solution. Have a look:

Solve : new wireless connection issue?

Answer»

I recently switched to DSL from cable internet and my i did not have a phone jack where my PC was. So I bought TRENDnet TEW-424UB USB 2.0 Wireless Adapter to go with my D-Link DGL-4300 router. I have my laptop working great being able to connect, but i am not able to connect with my PC. At first I still had the key PASSORD securtity set up on the router, but when that didn't work i decided to CLEAR it making it open and see if i could then connect... no go. The odd thing is, that the wirless connection STATUS is showing i am connected at very good to excellent and when i look at the wireless connection status it shows sent activity but not received activity. I am using windows XP, and i can not think of what else i may need to tell you. Oh one other thing, when i was trying to log on with my secured network, i was getting an error about "network password needs to be 40bits or 104bits" I used the exact same password i used to log into my laptop wirless connection and even reset it with a new SECURITY password which again worked on my laptop but not the computer. So that was why i decided to take the security completely off to see if i could connect without the password. Eventually i would like to resecure my connection of course. I am clueless as to what to TRY. Thanks for the help.

Solve : wireless internet problems?

Answer»

Hey everyone,

My wireless internet is being screwy. I have an excellent connection to the router but after a certain amount of time, the internet stops responding, and my connection SPEED drops dramatically. It only comes back up if I repair the connection and it only STAYS up for a small amount of time. I need helpTurn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and CHECK again.I've tried most of these already, and so I started messing with my router configuration. I set the wireless broadcast to 40MHz wide and changed the channel to channel 3 or 4 I can't remember which and so far my connection seems to be holding, 54MBPS and receiving internet flawlessly. Hopefully this will hold but I don't know as I've changed the channel and broadcast before and that lasted for about a day. I wish you, it does so

Solve : Keep comp on 24/7 for network print??

Answer»

ok i have networked my two comps for internet sharing of a DSL modem, to send files in between each other, and to share this old printer of mine. the printer is CONNECTED to my computer through a parallel cable, i activated FILE and Printer Sharing on my computer's Networking Properties(The comp's OS is Win 2K) i have everything setup but thing is, is that do i have to kept the computer with the printer on it, on 24/7 so the other comp can print. Like comp 1(without printer) wants to print off when the other comp is off?can someone give me an answer please.

Thanks in advance
NickIn order to print to that printer, the host computer has to be on. There are devices that are simply print servers on the network, but I don't know if they are still available for a paralell printer.thanks hmar. i think i can still buy a printer server for a LPT printer from CIRCUIT City, idk but i'll check.

Solve : printer on my wireless router won't work?

Answer»

I have a linksys WIRELESS G router. I have a Brother HL-2070N plugged into the router. I have two Dell laptops...Inspiron 700M and Latitude D630 both running XP. For some reason, I can longer PRINT through the router connection. I've tried everything. Uninstalling, re-installing...reseting the printer to FACTORY defaults and starting over....etc. etc. It looks like DOCS GO out there to the printer and then they just sit in the queue until finally it notifies me that the doc failed to print.... Any idea what I have done to screw up my home office??

Solve : Wireless router keeps crashing?

Answer»

I've got a WRT54GX4 Linksys wireless router, and every time I TRY turn on my laptop, the router crashes, freezes, locks up and has to be unplugged to reset to get it back. I doesn't happen instantly. I can be online for 5-10 minutes or so, then it locks up the router and I go unplug it for a minute, plug it back in, and everything works well for another 10 minutes or so.
The laptop is using XP, and has worked perfectly at every WIFI SPOT I've ever used it at.
My desktop is Vista, and with a Netgear USB wireless adapter, and it works great. But, even before I got the desktop, my laptop would not WORK for more than a few minutes, so I don't think that has anything to do with it.
My guess, is that it is the router, since the laptop works well every where else, but, the router works just fine for my desktop, as long as I don't turn my laptop on.
I've got another XP desktop wired to the router and it always works well too.
So, I've got two desktops, one vista, one XP, one wired, one wireless, and they both work. But my laptop seems to "FREAK out" the router?
Everything is open and automatic settings on all the computers and the router, as I've read a few websites suggestions.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

But, even before I got the desktop, my laptop would not work for more than a few minutes, so I don't think that has anything to do with it

Uuh...
I mean, that I tried my laptop, before I ever set up my new desktop computer, and it did exactly the same thing - work 10 minutes or so, then lock up the router. So, I was just stating that I didn't think my new desktop which operates just fine wirelessly, wasn't affecting my router adversely.
Even when I disconnect all desktops or have them off, my laptop will connect to the router, work a little while, then crash the router.
Does that help clarify what I was trying to say?Hmm.... a good used router is a lot less that a replacement laptop.
So, I am with on this. Let's blame the router.
My limited experience with routers has shown me that
you just don't know until to try it.
I have purchased used routers and hubs off of eBay that work as good as the ones you buy in the store.
It would be nice if the retailers would put
signs on the product like:

Solve : Unable to connect to internet in regular windows mode.?

Answer»

Yesterday, after my computer was RUNNING FINE, all of a sudden my Outlook Express would not connect to the internet. Tried to connect to internet thru my Firefox & Explorer browsers, no go. Tried to run my Norton 360 anti virus program, and it would not start. Restarted computer in safe mode, was able to connect to internet in safe mode, ran the virus program, and had it do a complete scan, and came up with no virus detected. Also ran my Adware spyware removal, and it came up with basically NON serious (TAC 3) spyware which was successfully removed. Rebooted back into normal mode, still no internet, and cannot get Norton to start up. Does this sound like a malware issue? I don't know if any other programs are working correctly, as have not tried to run any program in normal mode except for the Norton. If you can connect in Safe Mode with Networking, and you have Norton installed, that points to the latter as the culprit.
KIND of "normal".
Uninstall Norton, using this tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Turn Windows firewall on (for security reasons), and see, if you can connect.I agree with Broni. Norton is notorious for this kind of problem.

Alan <>< Thanks very much. It was the Norton 360. I ran all the malware removal steps as outlined under the virus section, still did not work, unistalled the Norton 360, and now everything WORKS fine as before. I have installed the Avast as my virus program for now, and turned on my Windows firewall. Is that all I need to do?
Now on to my next issue, no drivers for my CD & DVD drives, which I will post in the appropriate section, which would be ??.
Thanks again,
BrianYou did your computer big favor
Did you use Norton's removal tool?
As for CD/DVD drives, start new topic under hardware.Yes, thanks for the Norton removal link. It worked great!!!I'm pretty sure, your computer has a round of beer ready for you, just as a "Thank you" note

Solve : Open DNS is FREE for Home users. Protect yourself.?

Answer» OPEN DNS is FREE for Home users. Protect yourself.

Or pay them some money and get more features, if you WANT to.
This company makes their money by doing what your local ISP is too lazy to do. Protect the DNS from clever attacks. Yes, attacks on the DNS servers are very rare, but they do happen. It is like weaning a eat BELT. You may never need it. (NO. I do not work for them! This is not SPAM.)
The Open DNS is more accurate and faster than my local ISP from ATT. So, it was worth the bother for me to SIGN up and change my DNS.

Solve : Acquiring network address??

Answer»

I have a wireless network card I installed in a Dell computer. The computer recognized the new hardware right away, the install new hardware wizard came up, and the system successfully loaded the drivers. The network shows that I am connected but I cannot get on line. The little icon in the tool tray reads

wireless network connection
speed 54.0 Mbps
signal strength excellent
status acquiring network address

It seems to not find the network address. I am assuming it means the IP address. Can ANYONE help?

If more info is needed let me know.

The wireless card did work in a different computer I have.
Windows XP
Lynksys wireless G

I also went ito the cmd window typed in (ipconfig)
IP adress 0.0.0.0.
Subnet MASK 0.0.0.0.

ipconfig /all
autoconfiguration enabled
dhcp enabled
description 802.11 wireless LAN card
What does it show in Device Manager?

Try ipconfig /release, then ipconfig /renew

Alan <>< Actually device manager does not show the wireless NIC.

I'm sorry I checked the computer I am on right now. The computer I am working on does show the wireless card., DUH!!!

Device manager does show the wireless card installed.
I typed in ipconfig /release

No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection 3 while it has media disconnected.
IP address for adapter Wireless Network Connection has already been released.

ipconfig /renew
No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection 3 while it has media disconnected.

An error occured while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has TIMED out.

Does this computer need to be hardwired into the network to perform this?Have you tried TAKING out the wireless card and reinserting it?

Solve : really dumb question about network file sharing etc?

Answer»

ok i have a home network (2 laptops and one desktop) through a belkin wireless G router - allows the family to connect to the internet effortlessly on all three computers - but can we share files and folders or a printer? Can we *censored*! can't access the other computers from any computer!
I've checked the properties of all the CONNECTIONS and 'share files and folders' is ticked - i have set up the network according to windows instructions. Is there a vista/xp conflict (one laptop is vista, the other two PCS are xp). Or is there something quite simple that I haven't DONE?
Any help for this DUMBO?

Yes you can share easily.Make sure all computers are placed in trusted zone on all firewalls. And make sure all computers or in the same work GROUP. Go here for some good tips. Re: QA0039: Networks for Home/Small Business.

Good Luck

i have cleared all firewalls, made sure the right permissions are on for each computer, now when i click view workgroups or look in 'my network places' (from any computer in the so-called network) i get this window 'XXXXX (workgroup name) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use the network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.'
What the *censored* does THAT mean. I'm the administrator presumably.
Sorry for not responding sooner. But the admin problem brings up another complicated issue. I suggest you start another thread bringing up admin. problems

Sorry,

Solve : Wireless Insanely Slow on One Computer?

Answer»

My wireless connection for my PC has been ridiculously slow SINCE last night. Websites seem to take forever and a day to load and WoW is out of the question. Today the connection at least seems stable as last night it would keep dropping and then couldn't find the network again (although I could see the neighbours'). I restarted the PC, reset the router, blah, blah, all the things dumb people do when faced with computer problems (except physical violence ... so far). To see if it was the PC or not I set my laptop on the wireless network and it was perfectly fine.

Before this happened I was messing around with "Add Hardware," trying to GET my printer to work - could that have ruined me SOMEHOW?

Please let me know what more information is NEEDED (and maybe where to find it) and I'll post it right away.

Thanks!it sounds like to me you have a virus the best free anti-spyware and firewalls and anti-virus software out there get them all from FILEHIPPO.COM i have 3 top ones for you

Solve : Wired and wireless computers can connect to router but not to internet?

Answer»

Yesterday, Internet WORKED fine on both a wired and wireless computer, but TODAY I am only able to connect to the local PART of the NETWORK. As of now, I am using a neighbor's connection, but the signal is weak, so it keep cutting out.

It has really been confusing me because It was working fine yesterday, but today I have no connection to the internet whatsoever.

I've tried to unplug/PLUG in the router, reset it, reset the computers, but nothing has worked and I am only able to access the other computer connected to this network, not the internet. Plug one computer in directly to your modem, to verify that the connection itself is working.Do you use Zone Alarm?

Solve : internet really slow, help?

Answer»

Hi, I have a problem with my internet connection. Some of the internet content i try to acess straight up fails, and displays an error message "connection timed out" and other web pages are fairly SLOW at loading. This is really frustrating especially with online gaming. I have recently found out that when i ping any server through cmd, i get a 25% loss, 1 package never comes back. can someone please help, i dont know what to do, my internet is slow, and at times doesnt work. ALSO i should mension, my computer is not the only one on the network, but its the only one thats doing this, the other one is working perfectly. please help, i need my internet to function properly. What information should I add when submitting a question?im running windows XP with vista theme, computer is custom assembled intell pentium 4 3.07GhZ, 3GB ram, ATI video card, i dont know the model though. ASUS P5ND2-SLI motherboard. The problem arises in all of my internet browsers, (internet explorer, firefox, opera) It was slow like this for a while, i cant remember how long, but i only noticed the 25% loss of information earlier today when i pinged google, and a number of other different servers. The error message says "the connection has timed out" after i refresh, sometimes twice, it loads the PAGE. During online play my ping ranges between 100-500. My computer is connected to the internet through a router, Linksys Wireless G broadband WRT54GS (i use a cable though) Thats about all i can say, im not very wise in computers.First thing to try is to hardwire it straight to the modem. Reset modem, restart computer.k il try that, also my replies might take long because of the internet lagg, one question, (if un answered il try wiring directly to modem anyway) after i wire directly to the modem, to bring it all back through the router, im gona need to connect modem to router and reset it again right? ... and restart my computer. also while this is working the browsers all show a different error message:
internet explorer: could not load web page
firefox: connection timed out
opera: could not contact remote server
il try wiring directly to the router some time tomoroow, and reply as soon as i canalso if nothing can be done by sunday, theres no point, im leaving to a different country on monday, sorry for the short topicAll those error messages are basically the same thing, just different browser wording.
Quote

to bring it all back through the router, im gona need to connect modem to router and reset it again right?
Yes.i have wired my computer directly to the router, reset it, and restarted my computer, there was no internet at all. the cmd ping google.com command said "could not locate remote host" Computer back to router configuration, and internet is is still terribly slow. thanks for veryfying how to put it all back together. while reconnecting all the wires i found 2 quite suspicious things, both the router and the modem, are very hot, and the wire that runs to the wall, looks like an untenna wire, has an extension on it. the extension was always there, but its 2 feet long, and it looks like it was made 50 YEARS ago, dont know if that really matters though.

correction: i connected my computer directly to the modemNow, wait.
Did you connect your computer straight to the router, or to the modem.
I wanted you to bypass router, and go straight to the modem.
What do you mean by "extension"?
I suspect some modem, or/and router problem.
If nothing works, I'd call ISP to check them out.i connected my computer straight to the modem, i bypassed the router completely, and it just didnt work entirely. and by extension i mean 2 cables connected together instead of one because both of them are too short. I recall having a similar problem long ago, it was fixed by a brand new modem from the ISP. I dont rule out a router problem though.

I just pinged google again, all packages returned, 0% loss, internet became surprizingly fast. this happen like 5 minutes after the second computer connected to the network, was shut down. and while both of the computers were on both the computers experienced this problem, the other computer started having slow internet while mine was on. this is news to me too, never happened that way before, before mine was just the slow one. it seems like the 2 computers cant fit into one network. As I said, I suspect modem/router problem, and I doubt we can figure something more out, before they're checked/replaced.ok thanks for your help, il check the router and modem when i return from my international trip, i dont think anything can be done in 2 days.Hey, you're welcome.
Your ISP can do one test straight from their office, ping you line, and it may show something.

Lan/Internet Connection :

Code: [SELECT]HOME Host --> Router --> ADSL MODEM --> Internet

Laptop --> Wireless Lan --> Router --> ADSL Modem --> Internet

Solve : broadband usage question?

Answer»

As far as I know, most BROADBAND suppliers are still 'UNLIMITED.'

You didn't answer the question about where you are located; nonetheless, look for 'dry loop DSL' aka 'naked DSL.' This is DSL broadband across the phone system but you don't need to have telephone service.

Typical prices are $30 - $50/month for unlimited usage at speeds of 1.5 - 7.0 Mbps.

To put 40 MB into perspective (and bear in mind that you 'ran out' in 4 - 5 days), my XP SP3 down load was ≈65 MB. Admittedly, that's unusual, but it doesn't seem unusual to download 2 - 15 MB/month just from Windows Update - for one computer.

Quote from: Mr. Green on July 19, 2008, 09:59:30 PM

google "Sprint mobile broadband reviews" what comes up is mostly positive, even for the 40 mb plan. i don't get it.

This service is not for use at home, but, rather, for the business traveller who can check email, search Google maps, etc., while on the road several days a month.
This is my usage for last few months:

Quote from: Broni on July 19, 2008, 09:28:40 PM
Are you using Sprint, too?
No....I don't believe so.So, Mr. Green, let's assume that Broni is a 'heavy' user and is on the internet 15 hours a day. And, let's assume that you are a 'normal' to 'light' user and average 1 hour/day.

If we throw out the unusual 105 GB usage in April, Broni averaged ≈35 GB/month. Assuming that you and he have the same 'surfing pattern,' and your time spent surfing is 1/15 of his - your average would be ≈2.33 GB/month.

And Sprint allows you 40 MB...
Nice calculation, Mr. drmsucks Quote from: Broni on July 20, 2008, 09:09:26 AM
Nice calculation, Mr. drmsucks

Thank you

But the point is that (IMO) 40MB for 'normal' use hasn't been enough since I was 'surfing' Prodigy at 1200 BPS - or was it 600?!I have no idea what's going on here, since I've never heard about any internet connection with 40MB limit.
I think, we won't SOLVE it, until Mr. Green give us a link to his service description.

Solve : wireless keeps cutting out?

I have a linksys wireless router and 2 pcs both run xp home the router is a wr54tg and on the second computer it's using a linksys usb wireless adapter the one that is using the adapter is almost always losing a connection to the internet. Should I get a pci wireless card or something? both computers are compaqs I've had good luck with Linksys wireless USB adapters.

How far away from the router is the computer? Is the SIGNAL going through walls or other obstructions? What wireless spec - B, G, N? What signal strength/condition does the computer show? Are you using Linksys software or Windows to configure the adapter?

Also, can you try that adapter on another computer to make sure it isn't faulty hardware?it's wireless g and it's only going THRU one wall and the signal strength is very good to almost excellent.Quote from: drmsucks on July 19, 2008, 12:52:36 PM

Are you able to direct wire to the router? Same thing?

Forgot to ask before, is this a new problem? Did the setup ever work to your satisfaction?

Solve : wireless connection suddenly dropping?

Answer»

Hello, regarding wireless connection

I seem to have no option to view what channel my nieghbours are using.
My speed has been a constant 11MBps but lately it has been dropping it go's from 11mbps to 5mbps then 2mbps and then i get "limited or no connectivity" and carn't connect to the router for quite a while.

When i am connected again i change the channel right away,
This seems to have no affect, even after i change to another one.

Then it will connect and stay fine, maybe for a few days and then it will suddenly drop again, and then will take me ages to connect again.

Anything i could try

I am using a bt homehob 2.0
Belkin wireless G usb NETWORK adapter
and on windows xpQuote

No broni
I was told you could see what channel your neighboures are using, if you where to right click on any of the available networks, so that i could select another one if i got interverance, if we where using the same one.

But i don't have this optionI still don't understand. Why are you not using your own router/network?Quote from: Broni on February 05, 2009, 05:51:58 PM
I still don't understand. Why are you not using your own router/network?

Hello broni
Yes i am using my own wireless network, and say i am on channel 6 and getting interverance from somewhere, which i have been doing, i was told you could see what channel your nieghbours where using , by right ckicking on that network so that you could see what channel they where on, then if we where using the same channel as me "not the network" i could switch to another channel.

I could have worded it wrong, but that was a reply i got of another forum, aparantly he could do this to see what channel his nieghbours where using, but as i said i do not have this option.

I am on a desktop computer upstairs, with no available phone socket, so when i loose the connection i am stuck, the wireless adapter's driver seems up to date, and i have tryed moving the router slightly, turning the phone off etc, i am convinced it is interverance, because this has been happening for the last two weeks now, mostly at night.

The speed will drop suddenly from 11mbps to 5mbps then 2mbps then "limited or no connectivity".

So i have been seartching for a way to aviod this interveranceWhat is Channel 6?
It's still unclear. If your network is secured, how someone else could be using it, causing any interference?Quote
What is Channel 6?
It's still unclear. If your network is secured, how someone else could be using it, causing any interference?

hello broni

As far as i know
there are 13 channels, on a wireless network, no one can use your network, but your nieghboures could be using the same channel as you.

You could be using the same channel and have no interverance but if you do get some interverance, sometimes you just change the channel to see if that resolves it.

Someone did tell me you can see what channel your nieghboures are on, whatever router he had, all he did was to right click on any of the networks so it would show you what channel that particular network was using.

I carn't do this with the router i have, so i have to keep on changing channels until i get one with no interverrance.

This doe's not happen a lot though, its normally pretty stable I'm not aware of any tool, which will show what channel your neighbor is using. BESIDE, most likely they're using channel 6, since most routers are shipped that way.
Also, I think, it's less likely, your neighbor is the culprit.
This article will probably explain it better, than I can: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/moredone/wirelesstips.mspxthanks broni
some good info there particulary about the network adapters.
Thanks printed it outSure thing He is using 802.11 as a local wireless link from his router to his notebook.

In his location another wireless is withing range and has a strong signal. If he could find out who it is, they could make an agreement they would use greater separation of the channels. One start ton chan 3, the other start on chan 9. Do not start on chan 6, that is in the middle of the USA assignment. (In Europe it can be worse, fewer chns.)
Or, he may relocate his router to a better spot, use a directional antenna, or go horizontal. The 802.11 devices normally are subject to interference.A directional antenna does wonders.

I have the same problem. And my router is only twenty feet a sway, but the signal has to pass through three interior walls.

Solve : Access Points.?

Answer»

Hello all, please help!

I´m really new to this whole networking game and so am probably posting one of the stupidest questions ever but here goes...

My friend lives a floor above me in a block of apartments. I can detect his wireless signal but it´s very weak, so i was told to buy a signal strengthener - which i did.

I bought a Conceptronic 54Mbps Access Point, (the guy in the shop told me this would do the job).

However, after attatching the access point thing to the router, i am lost as to how this marries up to my laptop. My friend connects to the internet VIA his router wirelessly, if this information is needed.

Help.

Thanks. It should connect to the router and the router connects to the laptop....

Is that what you MEAN?Hello 123, (Can't get myself to write Stupidgirl

I think the shop assistant sold you a dummy. The only thing you could do is ask your friend to install the access point in place of his current one in the hope that it has a stronger signal (unlikely). Signal strengtheners are normally higher gain ANTENNA which replace the receiving antenna in your set up. Most laptops give no access to the antenna so that's not possible. I have had a similar problem but did find that although the signal was indicated as weak by the laptop I could establish a reasonable internet connection. Is the signal WEP encrypted and do you have the password? Another thought is to try at various places in your APPARTMENT to see where you might get a workable signal. Final thought - if your friend is directly overhead, RUN an ethernet cable down from his router to your laptop.

Good luck
SimplesimonThanks for the reply!

No my friend does not live directly above me.
The access point says on the box that it acts as a repeater, therefore that should boost the signal from the original router should it not?

I don´t know if we´ve got the original setup right.
My friend´s internet connection is via the router. If i attach the access point to the router, do i have to make any considerations that my friends laptop is present and running off a wireless signal?

I have the access code - is this the same as the encrption code?! Oh dear, i´m sooo sorry for being dim on this topic!

Solve : wireless zero configuration?

Answer»

hello there

I have just installed the bt homehub 2.0 , i have it on a wireless connection, the setup was fine, but for one problem.

when i start the computer up, i keep having to start the wireless zero configuration (service) the startup type is automatic

as soon as i start the service it will connect to the router, but when you turn the computer back on again the service has stopped, any advice as to what this could be

windows xp You only need the wireless zero configuration service if Windows is controlling the wireless connection. If the utility that came with your hardware is controlling the connection, the WZC service is not needed.

I do not filly understand how it all works but when i do go to my pre installed network ADAPTER, i carn;t seem to get anywhere

You lucked out. That's the same utility I have for my wireless card. Click the Options tabs and under Program Choice decide which program to use for your connection.

Personally I use the standard Windows XP utility. Also ENSURE the box under Automatic connections is checked.

You may have to reboot. The WZC should start automatically is you chose the Windows XP utility.

Good luck. Quote

thanks for that sidewinder, just done that, seems to have started up ok and connected.

It was puzzeling me as to why i could not use the pre-installed network adapter.

i had it wired up BUT ALL I WAS GETTING was"windows cannot configure this connection"

the pre-installed wireless software is preventing you from using the windows standard wireless software.
Find the software on your computer , once you find this software, you can either use it to set up your wireless connection

but as you know when i found it i could not use it.
as you said your locked out, but how do you use it if you wanted to or how do you get back into it ? Quote

Are you saying you have a network adapter built into your PC? If true, it should have worked out of the box. I was under the impression the Belkin adapter was external like a PCMCIA card.

Try opening Network Connections-->View Network Connections--> right click your wireless connection and click properties-->click the wireless network tab-->hightlight your network and click the properties button-->click the connection tab and ensure the checkbox for connect when network in range is checked.

There are faster ways of getting to the utility, but you never mentioned if you have access from the start menu.

I so do like good news. Quote

not sure what you mean by out of the box

but i did install a network wireless usb adapter, not for this bt home hub, i have just upgraded the router so i had one installed anyway

As i said this area is new to me so i am just learning about this, i.am still confused about why it just did not connect, i thought having a usb wireless network adapter
would just connect to the new router

It did say use your wireless adapter's software to set up your connection

so i did go to the wireless adapter's software , and thats were i got stuck, i'am getting more confused, just thinking about it

what i did because i was not getting anywhere was to unistall the network adapter
then reinstall it , and then some how i manage to connect to the router

when you are installing a new router do you have to install the wireless network adapter each time for that routerQuote
It did say use your wireless adapter's software to set up your connection

That would be correct. The configuration of the new router would have to match adapter's configuration. Whatever security mode, authentication, encryption technique, and password is set on the adapter needs to be set in the router.

If you already uninstalled the adapter, install the router while wired to the PC. Then unplug the PC from the router, install the adapter and configure exactly as the router was. Leave until later any network protection until you have a basic network up and running.

The documentation that came with your equipment will have all the details.

One thing I always found helpful is to broadcast your SSID in the router. Once the adapter finds the signal, you can disable this feature.hello sidewinder

I think i do still have a problem, just ran desktop help and this came up, and also (wzc) had stopped again, MIGHT have to set it up all again.

its all ok APART from the (WZC) STOPPING and having to start it again

That would be my recommendation. Start over. Remember you don't need the WZC if you let the Belkin utility control the control the connection. Belkin has a nicer GUI and better graphics. Microsoft not so much.

Good luck. Quote

thanks sidewinder

could you just go over this for me again, how do i let the belkin utility control the connection

and would i have to bring the pc downstairs and use the ethernet cable, i would say i'am about 15 METERS away from the hub

hello

I have let windows manage my wireless connection.

So i was wondering i am not using the belkins wireless g usb network adapter wireless software or belkins wireless connection manager, is there an opotion to disable this wireless connection manager

I did disable the (bts) wireless adapter configurator, which is the BT wireless connection manager

Solve : not receiving information when trying to connect to internet?

Answer»

Hi -

I have read a few similar threads, and tried suggestions from the "Limited or no Connectivity" thread, but couldn't get that to work. Here's my scenario:

My husband bought a used computer to use in his studio. Trying to connect via LAN to the internet (using a cable to our existing broadband box that this computer works with). The old computer shows that all the hardware is working correctly. The cable is working (checked on my computer) as is the broadband box (sorry, I'm a real beginner so I don't know if this is the right TERM). The network and connections box shows that it is working (blue COMPUTERS on the image). However when I check status, it shows that the computer is sending information, but not receiving any.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Julie

Thanks so much!!

Welcome to the forum!

Chances are, the school you attend will have internet access.

If the laptop you obtain has a built in Ethernet port (like a phone jack plug in, only six WIRES instead of four) and a built in wireless card, you'll be all set to access WHATEVER network the school has in place.

Most laptops come with these features, now.Oh, ok... Thank you! That cleared up a lot.

Solve : mapping network drive?

Answer» PC - Dell Latitude
OS - XP Pro

OK, let me SEE if I can explain this. Anytime I attach a PC to our network, it immediately finds the network drive. Once the PC is attached, it always finds the network drive. However, the laptops do not. They find the domain without a problem, but everyday, they have to be mapped to our network drive. Does ANYBODY have an idea or suggestion.there are two ways around it:

1- RUN a local soultion such as btach file on start ie;
net use M: \\serverdrive_OR_IPaddress\serverfile

2- Run start-up sript on domain controller side.

Either way should fix the remapping issue.

Solve : Laptop will not connect wirelessly to secure network- w/ password?

Answer»

I have a laptop that is a part of my home network and connects just fine to my home network (set up by geeksquad). I can also CONNECT wirelessly to unsecured networks that are available in the neighborhood but these are very weak connections. I am trying to connect to the connection at my parents home and I have the password. It tries to connect and says "acquiring network address" and the ball bops back and forth but it never connects. While trying to connect, it reads "waiting for the network to be ready?

Then it says that I am connected but continues to read "acquiring network address" as the ball bounces.

My SISTER's laptop has the same problem, unable to connect.

Is this a problem on my laptop or the home PC? or both?

I have disabled all firewalls on both the laptop and the PC.

ALSO, my husband tried to connect directly to the router and then it reads something about conflicting IP addresses...

please help...

Hey Danielleizzi,

Between you, your sister and parents, there SEEMS to be a IP-Address conflict. I bet it is a problem with Static IP-Adrressess, and by chance you can connect to the neighbours.

First of all, re-instate the FireWall, it is a dangerous thing to turn it off. If you can connect through the neighbours, than you have no FireWall problems.

You have to look at the all Routers and PC/Laptop Ip-Address settings. If you have your Laptop set as Static, it may be fine, but at your parents it my not be fine, as they may (guaranteed) have their Laptop or Desktop IP-Address set the same (static at the same Address), and that is what their Router does not like. Thus Conflict.

To solve the problem: Set all IP-Addresses to Dynamic.
1. Open the Router and look for DHCP Listing/Allocation. There you will see a list Dynamic Allocated equipment. Go to Wireless Listing and there you will see a list Wireless equipment, Dynamic or Static. Make a note of their Name and MAC Addresses. Go to the LOGFILE and clear it if possible.
2. Go to your Lap/Desktop and change your IP-Address settings to Dynamic.
3. Shut down the Lap/Desktops.
4. Shut down the Routers. Unplug all cables and most important, unplug the power cord. Let that sit for at least 10 Min's. This should clear the ARP Stack that contains the IP-Address.
5. Reconnect all the Router cables and power-up. Wait until all lights have stopped flashing.
6. START your Lap/Desktop, and logon. Now the Router should do a proper DHCP allocation. This may take up to 20 minutes on your Router.
7. Go to the Router and look again at the DHCP and Wireless listing, and see what is listed. You may have duplicate Names, but these will disappear. Go to the Logfile and notice the Allocations and Start-ups of Equipment.
8. It would be useful if you could run the following batch command before you do all the above mentioned things, and after you are started up again, on each Machine. This will tell you your IP-Address and whether it is Dynamic or Static
echo ++++++++++++++ARP -a++++++++
ARP -a
9. It would be wise to set-up the Dynamic settings on all (but one) Lap/Desktop and the Router at your parents place, then you know it works. Then you only re-set your own Router Later.

Good Luck
i will give this all a try and let you know what happens...thanks for your detailed response...let's cross our fingers!

Solve : Newbie Question about My Linksys?

Answer»

I am new to this wireless idea, so bear with me.

I have two desktop PC's and 1 laptop in our house. I have a Linksys WRT54G Wireless Broadband Router.

Currently I have 1 desktop PC and 1 laptop hooked up to the Linksys Box. The wires from the Linksys box go to my computer and my modem. The laptop works without any wires, we can walk around the house with it and have an internet connection (I don't know how but it works and that's good enough for me)

I am trying to hook up the second desktop PC (my kids) so that it operates much like the laptop. Is this possible?

Every time the kids want to use the Internet on their computer, I have to turn off my modem and then turn theirs on. I can't have both modems on at the same time. We have Internet connection through SBC (it is not DIAL up).

My goal is to use this router box so that all three computers can operate on the Internet at the same time. Is this a possibility? If so, can you explain to me what I need or what I need to do to get that second desktop working?Ok, lets see..

The box that gives you the wireless signal is the Router.

So is this your setup? :

Modem

Whoa, this makes no sense. Why do you have two modems? You have a router, which is designed to connect up to 4 computers by cable plus support one or more computers via a wireless connection. So, why in WORLD do you have two modems?

Do you not know the features of your router? Are not aware that it has four ports on back? Here's some info from linksys: WRT54G

Why do you want to connects the kids' destop by wireless? That's not a portable computer. Is it moved around? Is the reason a lack of wiring to the room where their computer is located?

Whaever the case, if you want to connect the kids' destop by wireless, you just need to install a wireless receiving unit in that computer. This could be a device that installs in a PCI slot inside the computer or a device that connects to a USB port.Well basically, I don't care if the kids computer is wireless. The problem is, every time they want to access the internet I have to turn off my modem (therefor I can't get my work done).

The goal is to allow everyone to be on the internet at the same time. I just thought MAYBE the Linksys router might be able to help.

Any suggestions on how I can accomplish this?Quote from: jochnois on August 03, 2008, 06:15:39 PM

2. No I don't understand the features of the router
3. I know it has four ports on the back but I don't want to run a wire from one floor (the kids computer) to another floor where the router is located.
4. I want to connect their computer wireless so I don't have to run 100 FEET of cable from one floor to the next.

I'm trying to figure out a solution so I don't have to run wires all over the house. Is it possible to have two computers (the laptop and the kids) wireless?

You'll probably be able to find them at most places that sell computer hardware, but it will require opening up the computer for installation,so you might want to find somebody to do it for you, if your not comfortable with that. Either that, or you could get a wireless USB adapter for that purpose.

Depending on your houses topography, you could also TRY to place the router at a sort of "halfway" location. However, as you say there are two separate floors involved. So wireless seems like a good way to go.

* Unzip HostsXpert.zip
* It will create a folder named HostsXpert in whatever folder you extract it to.
* Run HostsXpert.exe by double clicking on it.
* click the Make Writeable? button.
* click Restore Microsoft's Hosts File and then click OK.
* Click the X to EXIT the program

Then, try again.nope. still not workin. if my step dad wasnt a jerk lol. his brother helped us do it in like 2 minutes last time but he says he wont call him. grrrr.Does it happen only with this specific address?i dont know. i know we fixed it last time on this computer. we went to cmd and did ipconfig and IM not sure what number he did because ive tried all of them and i did ipconfig/all also and i cant get back to the linksys page.Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run, type in:
cmd
Click OK.

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run, type in:
cmd
Click OK.

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run LSP-Fix: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Restart computer, and see, if it helped.
If not...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.i have done all of those except the last two but i just got a new PSP after i broke my old one, and i tried to connect it to the internet and it will find my linksys when i search and get about 60-100% and when i try to connect to it it will say it can not connect and maybe the signal is weak. it seems like thats similar to the problem i was having before. the reason why i need to get to the linksys setup page is to connect my wii. the wii will also find the linksys and when i test connection it says it failed. is there something else i can do? thought maybe i would explain my problem a little better. i know the last time the wii had this problem (like last week), we enabled something on the dhcp menu or something like that.Maybe you should call ISP to check the line stability?ehhh i guess we will have to. lol. when u buy a service u should have it working and have to put no effort in to it lol. stupid crap. That's true...

How about this - did you check?Yes we have checked thatDid she run the scans herself? At this point a small percent is still pointing to it.She didnt' run the scans herself. She was on the phone with COMPAC and they had her run the scans but she didn't know what all scans they had her do...i'm thinking of just asking her to bring her computer in and i'll check it out and see if I can't anything on it that you couldn't pin point over the phone.Quote from: The Ensona on July 21, 2008, 02:37:36 PM

Sent them an email.Ok hope ya didn't say anything bad. HehIts better if its done that way, cause your trying to HELP her but when the PERSON dont understand cause they dont care it causes problems. Hopefully everything will work out. Thanks i'll keep trying to figure it out.Ok we got the problem fixed...she is now able to get on the internet all parts of the day and so far everything works fine. What we had done is on friday, our network admin went to one of the TOWERS that she is getting her wireless signal from and updated with software...well her radio on the side of her house thats connected to her antenna didn't take the update so I had a guy go out this morning and change her radio out and I checked to make sure it was up and it was so her new radio did take the update. I'm not sure when she got home but right at 5 when I was getting off work I decided to look and see if I could see her user name up and it was so I called her and asked her if it was working and it is. I then asked her if she had encountered any disconnection issues or anything and she hadn't but the only problem she noticed she was having is on projectplaylist when it would play a song it would stop and go but I have that covered and will fix it tomorrow morning. I would like to thank everyone for their posts and time taken trying to help me figure this out. Thanks for the conclusion and Good Job!Thats good to HEAR. Not an easy fix with out having to go there. If you know what I mean.Yea I know what you mean and thanks again for everyones advice!Thats good, no hard feelings

Solve : wireless D610 help?

Answer»

hi

im no guru. I have a dell d610 with an wireless 370pcminicard or something like that. it had previously connected to the dlink router in the other room just fine, even could print on the printer.

suddenly, not only does it not "connect" but it doesnt even "see" the available wireless network, where it used to "see" both ours and all the neighbors also.

windows says the "hardware" is not connected. does this mean someone stole the card? where does it install?

there is a SLOT, on the front, left, side, of the laptop, which seems like it is an empty slot, i dont remember if it is supposed to be that way. did someone steal my card?

or is it something else?

Please help thanks,

jerrie OK so i tried some diff things, no luck.

finally i went in the bios and made some changes there. came back on reboot, re-installed the drivers, reconfigured it to connect to the home network, and

BINGO!!

Everything works.

I will say ONE thing. I bet alot folks dont realize there overheating their laptop by leaving it on the bed all day long. I SUSPECT that may have had something to do with it, cause it couldnt BREATHE and was pretty hot underneath.

a lesson learned.

thanks for the help.

Solve : How Do I Use SecureEasySetup With A Laptop That Doesn't Have A Linksys Adapter??

Answer»

I TRIED searching for this topic, but I'm not sure if I'm wording it right.

Anyhow, my LAPTOP is usually connected to my roommate's wireless router with a cable, but whenever I leave my desk, I unplug the laptop and it automatically CONNECTS to the router through wi-fi... well, it USED to, anyway.

Since we're about to move in a few weeks, I didn't want to drill any more holes for cables so I hooked up a third computer with a Wireless-G USB ADAPTER from Linksys. I used SecureEasySetup, which worked fine for the third computer, but whenever I tried to connect my laptop wirelessly, it couldn't find the old network, which was simply named "Linksys."

Now the available network is named "Linksys_SES_92372" or something like that. So, I tried to connect to it, but the password no longer works. (I'm certain I'm using the right password... when I set it the first place, I printed it and copied it and tacked it to two different walls in the house so I would NEVER forget it. There's no way this is a password problem.)

I heard you can connect a computer with SecureEasySetup EVEN if the computer doesn't have a Linksys adapter. Well, uh, how do I do that... or is that even the best option?
