Solve : switching router security from WEP to WPA2?

Answer»

This is my first foray into your Forum world having just joined today. I am pleased to be here. I hope this is the right department to post this question.

I have the 2Wire 2701HG-B wireless router and an AT&T DSL Internet connection. I recently discovered a little bit about encryption and security regarding these devices.

I wish to know how to switch my device from WEP to WPA2. Everything I have tried so far has prov-en unsuccessful. I can change it in the security tab to WPA2 but I lose my Internet connection because it says the router doesn't agree with the newly set computer settings. I have also tried typing in the IP address for the router in the address box but I do not go to the router configuration page as I have read that it says I should. I have tried connection an Ethernet cable directly to the router and computer but I did not see what that accomplished. It was supposed to connect me to the router configuration page, I thought, but it didn't. CLEARLY, I am missing some important step in understanding what to do.

All in all, everything I have tried has disconnected my Internet connection and I have to put things back the way they were to get the Internet back. That means I still have WEP-which is what I started with but do not want.

How do I effectively change this?

Then the next question will be how to set up a master PASSWORD in which to access it all using KeePass? But that's the next story.....

Thank you very much and I hope SOMEONE can help me.

TRY here for the info:

http://support.2wire.com/?page=view&article=60

Good Luck Thank you so much for that info website. I have made some progress since I posted my question. I have now been able to pull up the router configuration page. It seems I was using the WRONG IP address. With the help of your website link and the router configuration page, I can now try to affect my changes.

If the changes take, then my next task will be to try and understand the KeePass master password setup and tie that to the router security. I could use some help there too, if anyone has used it before.

Thanks.

Solve : Belkin G125 Wireless Router shows no signs of life.?

Answer»

My router has been working all this time, but today I plugged it in and all I got as the light under the 'Power' sign go red. Nothing else seems to happen.
I've plugged in the TELEPHONE cable and I've tried connecting to the router through my ethernet cable straight through - nothing.
I also resetted the router twice but nothing happened after the bootup.

What can I do?I guess, you NEED to go shopping SIMILAR thing happened to my actiontec verizon gateway, the power light stayed red and nothing happened. So I called Verizon and they BASICALLY told me it was crap and there was nothing they could do because i was OUTSIDE of my warranty. So I went shopping and got a lynksys wrt150 N router and have had no problems at all

Solve : *censored* you Linksys!?

Answer»

So the other day I guess the FIRMWARE on my Linksys WRT150N wireless router GOT corrupted. It caused my router to stop putting out the wireless signal so my computer running off the ROUTERS signal, couldn't access the internet. The way their ASK Linksys online help service said to fix it did not work. So I was FORCED to call the technical support line and spend 2 hours trying to understand what the lady was saying in order to fix this thing. Finally we got it fixed. But now there is a new problem. The computer that is getting my internet wirelessly, its internet is INCREDIBLY slow. It used to be extremely fast, now its crap. It literally took me 30 minutes to get it from my HOMEPAGE to the forums here.

The people on these forums have always been really good at helping me in the past, so I'm curious if anyone here might be able to help me get my Wireless internet running at the peak performance it used to be. Because i really dont want to have to call Linksys again and try to decipher what they are saying there.Personally, I'd get a new router.Sounds like the chip is toasted....getting a new router is the best thing you can do...

But you can try to flash the frimware to a older version and than flash it to the lastest version. This can clear the router out. If your getting a new one that you have nothing to loss by doing this.

Keep in mind when to flash the frimware to disconnect everything except the machine you are using to do the flashing. So unplug all the network cables except the one you are using before you start.

Good luck....

Solve : Problems with staying connected wireless while gaming?

Answer» HI, I'm having a very annoying problem with gaming. Right now I play Final FANTASY 11 online and i meet all the specs for it if not a little more. I have a time warner cable modem , which is probably about 1 -2 yrs old , and i'm using a belkin G + mimo router. For a wireless pickup i'm using a linksys adapter which plugs in with a usb cord. Its the Wusb54G one. I also am using a PS3 which i currently have connected wirelessly to the same router. Well before I got the new belkin router I had a linksys router which crapped out on me. I started having issues with that router with connection and it was getting really bad so a friend of mine said it was the router. He said every time he changed the settings for the actual internet itself it would go back to the default settings. As of right now i'm getting the same disconnecting problem but definitely not as bad as before. It's still annoying and it SEEMS like theres some sort of interruption in the signal of the internet since it takes me a little bit to disconnect. We're not sure if its the ps3 or if its my wireless pick up that i have right now. Our internet is on Channel 2 and i've read that its a bad channel for wireless since it can interrupt your signal. I was wondering what i can do to fix this problem because it gets really frustrating to be connected and disconnected every 5-10 minutes. it seems to happen more when i'm playing online than if i'm just browsing the web. I even connected the ethernet cord straight from my computer tower into the belkin router with the same problem. I really don't want to waste money on a new wireless router or adapter. I also dont have any of the equipment that far apart...probably 10 feet at most. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you!!!Quick Question, what is the signal strength when connected?

When it disconnects, does it reconnect itself?sent you a message too and still having the same issue....it really only seems to happen when i'm playing final fantasy online...and its not really doing it now that i have an ethernet cable right into the router. I just dont understand why its just when i'm using my game that it keeps disconnecting...its almost like its every 30 minutes or so or sometimes every 5...its just really annoying and i dont know what to do
Oh and i'm also using trend micro internet, its set at medium for web browsing stuff and i had a pop up window a while back when i installed asking me if it was ok to run ffxi so it asked me yes or no and i clicked yes. I also found someone else on a different forum website that looks like they're having the same problem as me. I'm just trying to give as much info as possible. At this point since i havent really disconnected all night from how i set my computer up now...so web interference is the only thing i can think of....And if you didnt get my message: Its still connected it just seems like theres too much using the internet. Cuz when my fiance was using youtube on the ps3 andi was on my game, i saw youtube having trouble loading a page after a while and then all of a sudden i dced. but even if the ps3 isnt on i still have the same problem. Its not that the internet even disconnects for me... ffxi just stops working and it takes me forever to get booted off. When i'm playing i can stilll see text in the game and i can still do a COUPLE other things then all of a sudden i cant and i start to disconnect. i'm usually only on it for 30 minutes and after that it disconnects...
Sorry for the novel of a description but its just getting so annoying...stays around 54 mbps and sorry about the message. I didnt know i was logged out of here. But yea, i just bought another router and i tried hooking the two routers up and i still get the same problem. So now we have a linksys and belkin router hooked up together. i'm gonna be trying to see how things work without the belkin router plugged in and hopefully that works. You said when you're plugged in using a cable, you have no problems?

By signal strength, I mean how many bars are there.Ok well i was using an ethernet cable going right into the belkin router. Sadly my game wasnt working but my internet was. I wasnt having any disconnection problems with the net at all. I had full bars everything was normal. I just went out to best buy yesterday and picked up a Linksys router. Those have worked well for me before and i've never had this disconnecting issue with them. I even talked to geek squad and someone from best buy who told me its the router. Well right now i have both the linksys and belkin routers hooked up together but i took out the cord connecting my computer to the belkin router. I'm using my Linksys wireless pickup to get the internet from the linksys wireless router. It was working ok for longer periods of time but i do need to test it without the two routers together. I'm assuming having the two routers together could be problematic. Also the channel for linksys is 6 and the channel for the belkin is 3, i do wanna change the channel on the linksys but i might wait till a friend of mine can come over and do it. I'm not as familiar with messing around with the linksys. Basically my internet worked ok plugged in but my online game still disconnected. The guy at best buy said his son had the same problem and they just changed out the routers and it was fine. So right now i'm taking out the belkin router and see if that fixes stuff. if that doesnt then idk. Thats the last effort i have.I guess nvm then, FIGURED out my problem myself -.- Its just my router. i needed to buy a completely different router and only have that one run seperately.

Solve : Location of gateway settings on XP?

Answer»

I need to locate the settings on an XP to make it a network gateway. I have a computer that needs to connect to the Internet through the XP. Does anyone know where to find those settings. There is only one geteway ip seeting

Go to network connections area then right click on local connections area in general go to Internet protocol (TCP/IP) then click on properties there u will get geteway ip seeting( u have to ENABLE use the following IP address

That was not particularly helpful. That setting is for connecting to a gateway.how is it that you've configured your machines?

What form of internet do you have connected to the XP machine? (Dial up, DSL, Cable).

The ideal method WOULD be to purchase a DEDICATED router. other then that, you will probably need a second NIC from that your using for internet access. The network is being setup in this way due to the restrictions of the house and the room selected to be the office.
XP -> Ethernet -> XP -> Wireless -> Router -> Ethernet -> DSL modem -> telephone -> ISP
There is no telephone in the office. A NEW NIC would be required for the first XP to connect by wireless to the router. The second XP is having problems SHARING the Internet. The two XP's are talking to each other (sharing files) but they don't want to admit it ("no or poor connection").The solution was to bridge the Internet side with the XP side in the network connections by selecting the connections and right clicking on them. No further thread required on this topic.

Solve : Any VoIP calls are randomly disconnecting my entire computer.?

Answer»

Hey,

At any point during a call, my entire connection goes down for my PC (wireless NODE on a two computer network, through a router). It is back up within a few seconds. This only happens when I am using VoIP, and am in a call.

I have had the same telecom and ISP for two years, with excellant up-time. My original PC, running XP, had zero problems with connectivity.

Two weeks ago, I installed a new PC and have started having problems. The call I'm in, and anything else I am using (e.g - an online game / IE), will DROP in connection for a brief moment. This has occured anytime between 10mins and 2.5hours.

Here is a list of some things that I am using:

- Vista Home Premium (64-bit)
- Intel. Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33Mhz
- 4096 MB RAM
- 768 MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600GS
- Netgear DG834G router
- Belkin G wireless adapter
- AVG Free anti-virus
- Spybot (tea timer)
- Windows messenger
- Skype (and Skype beta)
- World of Warcraft (and it's built-in VoIP)

NB: I live in N. SOMERSET, SW England.

Here is a list of things I have tried:

- OPENED the ports that Skype / World of Warcraft requires in both incomming and outgoing traffic on my router
- Checked that Skype / Messenger are allowed through the Windows firewall
- Disabled Windows firewall
- Disabled Windows Defender
- Disabled AVG Free's resident scanning
- Disabled Spybot
- Disabled Windows' UAC
- Disabled automatic updates
- Updated to the latest GPU, Network and Ac'97 sound drivers
- Have Service pack 1 and all the (that are available on the MS site) updates installed
- Installed Skype to another directory other than 'programsx86' - I installed to a 'public' folder, where my World of Warcraft is also
- Given Skype Admin' rights (I am the computers admin', and sign-in as such)
- Changed various network settings, such as 'private' or 'public' etc
- Ran a registry clean
- Ran an anti-virus scan
- Ran a disc check
- Ran away, as fast I could!

My Belkin wirless adapter is new; I used a Netgear one before, but have lost the drivers for it. I also haven't upgraded the router's firmware yet. Other than that, I have no idea what to do, and it is very disheartening.

Help is very, very much appreciated.

Solve : Unidentified network when connecting wirelessly - Computer cannot find router?

Answer»

When i try to connect my computer wirelessly it KEEPS TELLING me that it is an "unidentified network". I already have two other computers hooked up to the same router so i dont KNOW what the problem is. The Access is local only instead of being local and internet. The computer can connect to the network but not to the actual internet. When i click "search for devices" it cannot find my router. The WIFI light on the side of the laptop does not flash LIKE it is supposed to. I have tried many things such as uninstalling the drivers, disabling Norton, turning off FIREWALLS and telling the computer to automatically select an IP address.

Please reply if you have a solution to the problem or if you need any more information.
That's weird!

What OS are used on the ones that are connected and the one is not?
XP or Vista?

Also here is an article that maybe will help you:

my computer is on a secured wireless connection and I gave my friend my password so that she can log on but she has problems logging on my connection. I am not sure how to help her.

What type of SECURITY is your wireless connection using? WEP (hope not)? WPA? WPA2?

Is your friend using an older wireless card? Older cards may not support WPA2 (or even WPA!!!)

Is your friend using Windows XP or Windows Vista?

Does she have firewall software on her computer?
Hi

Solve : TVersity?

Answer»

Never RUN any constant anti-viruses like I do now in fear my PC will completely die meaning I got to break into my bank earlier than I planned too, but I have AVG, SAS & MBAM running and I regularly watch films through my 360 that I have stored on my TV and it says when I go to my Video Libary on the Xbox that a firewall is blocking the connection, what is lightly to be causin this, which software? Any help much appreciated, thanks in advance folks. Sounds like you are PAYING for antivirus... the only REASON to pay for it is if you are a commercial user.

What firewall programs do you have?
Are you behind a router?

What OPERATING system is your PC running?
Hi:

I had that problem before, my guess is that you're using WINDOWS firewall. What's you OS, XP or Vista?

While you answer that, you should know that in order to share media files from your PC to your XBOX 360, your firewall have to be configured to allow network sharing, don't worry is not that hard.

Here is really useful link I used the first time I setup my network sharing to my XBOX 360;

Hope this will help!

Solve : Local connection but no Internet connection on wireless?

Answer»

I've SEARCHED the forum to SEE if there is a similar problem to mine, so I hope this has not been covered to death (though I'm guessing it has). Anyway, I've set up my parents computer with one computer hardwired into the router for a DSL connection. The other computer is going to be wireless and I've got it so it RECOGNIZES the connection and has the wireless signal. The problem is that it has a local connection but not an internet connection. It's like there's a block in the way on the wireless. I've tried connecting the wireless directly with a cable and I am able to access the internet. Is there a setting I'm missing? If it helps, the router is a Lynxsis (sp?). It's frustrting because I know the computer is receiving the wireless signal, just not to the internet. Any help is appreciated and sorry if this has been asked before.I have the same trouble with my desk top in my GARAGE, I have local connection, good signal strength or better yet my speed is 1.0Mbps most of the time limited or no internet. Once in a while I will have 18 Mbps plus, but not very often. This just started a while back and it is very frustrating because I pay extra for faster DSL service but can not use it. My laptops seem to have no trouble at all like this so can anyone tell me what gives? I can connect my cell phone and get a faster internet connection is the sad part.

Solve : router to an external modem?

Answer»

Hello All.

I have an EXTERNAL modem that my ISP sent me for my XP PC. The phone line connects into it and out the other end comes the ethernet cabel into the back of my desk top. Everything works fine.

I bought a TP-Link router as I want to add other PC's and the instructions say connect the phone line into the router and then connect the ethernet cables from the sockets to the other PC's. To do this bypasses the modem and therefor it wont work (should it?)

My QUESTION is - Can I take the Ethernet cable from the modem and plug it into one of the router sockets at the back (BYPASSING the phone in conection) and thus get the network set up. Also would I need a straight through cable to do the modem to router connection?

Thanks

I'm assuming you have DSL (high speed Internet through a phone line that doesn't interfere with phone calls).

With one computer, the order is

Computer ----- Ethernet cable -------- modem --------- telephone cable -------- wall jack.

With a router, it is:

Computer A ------- Ethernet cable --------- router LAN port (numbered 1, 2, 3, or 4)

Computer B ------- Ethernet cable --------- router LAN port (numbered 1, 2, 3, or 4)

Router WAN/Internet port -------- another Ethernet cable --------- DSL modem ---------- telephone cable --------- wall jack. Thanks for that - This bit I understand

(Router WAN/Internet port -------- another Ethernet cable --------- DSL modem ---------- telephone cable --------- wall jack.)

But the is no Router WAN/Internet port on the router, just a phone connection for modem and 4 Ethernet ports for networking.

Do I use one of these ports for the connection to the DSL Modem? What is the make and model of your router?

It's a TP-link TD-W8901GYour router is a ADSL router and not a standard DSL router.

www.tp-link.com/english/soft/20071124141224.pdf

Check out chapter 2 and 3 for the setup of this router.

I would suggest you replace it with something like a linksys WRT54G.
Thanks again. I have seen this and cannot understand why in fig 3.4 I have no sub net mask or default gateway boxes to fill in on my OS. It's XP home, with service pack 3 on it. Any suggestions.

I have pinged the system as the guide told me and got success.

Just found out that I had not gone to the IP address 192.168.1.1 & typed in the ISP passwords.

Thanks for your help and happy NEW year

Solve : limited or no connectivity on XP after reset, but not on Vista?

Answer»

Hi. I dual boot XP and VISTA on a Del E520, 3.06ghz cpu and 2.5gb ram. I am connected to Verizon DSL using a Westell 6100 modem to connect to a Intel 82562v integrate card. This has the latest drivers (9.8.20.0) i know of. The problem is that if i lose my connection, which sometimes happens after Windows gets done downloading an update, then i get the "limited or no connectivity" notice, and in which case it is the latter. Turning off the modem and restarting it will not work (same error), and even if i restart the modem when i have a good connection then it results in no connection. If i reboot the PC all is FINE, and under Vista this never happens. I have been on the phone with Verizon in India, and reset the modem, then typed in the IP address etc. on the browser, but that did not work, and doing a command prompt ipconfig showed i had no connection.

I then installed the Winsock fix that has worked for others, but if i turn off the modem and turn it on the same thing happens

As Vista does not have this problem, i surmise it is an issue that is EITHER peculiar to my PC or with XP which Vista fixed.

I choose Diagnose Problems in IE, and it tried to reset the IP address and fix things, and below is the text of it:

Sounds like your tcp/ip protocol is corrupted. There are only a few reasons why you would get limited or no connectivity (bad cable, modem/router is off & a few others) and since you don't get this error with vista it leads me to believe there's corruption. As you can see from your logs when it tries to renew the address it gives you an ip starting with 169. That number tells you that your pc is having trouble acquiring a "good" ip, which for you probably starts with 192. There are 3 things you can do. I don't know your level of expertise but I'm not going to spell out each thing so if you need further guidance just ask:

1 - set a static ip address that way you won't have to worry about losing the ip
2 - remove & reinstall the tcp/ip protocol (you will probably need your windows cd)
3 - follow the following links to fix your protocol:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=299357

resetting winsockWell, after trying the below to no avail (though it would freeze up when applying a new static ip) i used a 3com 3C905b card i had from an old pc and now the problem is fixed! Praise the Lord

Solve : Connected, but Firewalled?

Answer»

I looked through the other posts, but I didn't see any similar problems, since many of them INVOLVED wireless routers.

Anyway, I have a DSL CONNECTION, and use an ethernet cord. Recently I had issues with a virus, so I downloaded an extra Spyware remover to clean my computer. My main PROGRAM is WebRoot.

Just recently, I was on my PC in the morning, but when I came home, I was unable to get on the internet. The LAN SAID it was connected, but firewalled. When I HOOK the ethernet cord into my laptop, the internet works perfectly fine, and that is using the firewall settings of WebRoot and the one on the Windows program.

I've tried disabling the firewalls, but nothing happens. I tried with both Internet Explorer and Mozilla.

Could someone care to help, since I've no idea how to fix this problem.

Solve : Routers again.?

Answer»

This is I think a separate problem compared with some others to with routers.

My D-Link DL-514 (a wirelss unit but no wireless connection used - all cable) served me well over quite some time with my last puter - allowing an easy hook up to my backup machine as well - both existed HAPPILY with their connections - all from a Direcway 6000 satellite modem.

I started with current machine mid this year ..... and IIRC was still managing fine with two MACHINES off the router but - end of Sept had to upgrade 6000 to the 7000 modem model .... since when no luck using router.

I did a router reset - power down, power down modem - and then hook all up and power up. Bringing up my Broadcom Control suite - I checked out with tests and it pinged the 192.168.0.1 IP of the modem and other tests showed as good including relevant cables - but - no functional connection SEEN by puter. Some tests involve a temp virtual disconnection and the usual "cable unplugged" message came up briefly and then off. All seemed to check out but no connection as far as puter was concerned.

So - apart from things not seeming to set themselves and work, I went back to direct LAN link to puter from modem ... but I found that after a reboot and modem refresh power cycle - I had no connection!

Thank heaven for ERUNT as a use of ERNDT from recent - got whatever settings shouldn't have changed in reg - back to what did work. .. relief. However, I am loathe to try again as all that happens is it screws things up as well as not WORKING! I wonder right now mainly about the MAC number and what I might be able to do to check this out. In my data sheet for this 7000 modem it mentions a MAC number different from what I see in the Broadcom Control Suite ..... should these match.?

Routers and networking have to be my weakest points - any thoughts appreciated regarding setting up a router - what matters and what doesn't.

Solve : modem error?

Answer»

I'm new to DSL I just got verzion high speed INTERNET. I'm installing it myself and I'm having issues with the modem. I installed all the filters for the DSL on my phones I have a phone line RUNNING directly into the modem an ethernet cable running from the modem to the back of my computer and the power is plugged in. I put the Verzion disk in my router I believe its 6100 model I only get as far as testing my connection when the count down for testing my connection ends it gives me errors. Check Service ready date it says well according to verzion my service ready date is good so it should work the filters are installed on all my phones I dont have any alarm systems or anything else hooked into the phone lines. My computer is a SONY Vaio windows XP installed with around 700mbs of ram. I just installed a new Ethernet card in it that doesnt SEEM to be the problem because the cable I got has Ethernet and USB on it and I cant get either to get a connection signal. I pluged everything in and did an IPConfig on the command PROMPT and I'm getting and IP address its a 192 IP adress I believe. I tried releasing it and renewing the ip address with no luck. I did a trouble shooting on my internet and what I got was this.
TCP/IP BINDING FAIL
Adapter Enable FAIL
DHCP fail
any idea's on what my problem could be any help I'd appreciate.

Solve : USB or PCI adapter??

Answer»

In a couple of weeks I will finally be leaving the h**l of dial up and be moving to Roadrunner supplied by Time Warner cable. They will be supplying the wireless router but want 50 BUCKS for the adapter for the second computer. I've seen adapters, both USB and PCI, for under $20.

What I need is some expert advice as to what I need to have the second computer OPERATE at maximum speed. The two computers are separated by 30 ft. or less, on the same floor and not much in the LINE of walls to impede the signal. Should I take their adapter or buy my own? Yes, you should buy your own if you can find it cheaper than 50$. The ONE thing you should ask if you don't know already is if the wireless router will be "g" or "draft n". This will tell you what type of wireless nic you need. Whether you should get pci or usb is really a preference. With usb you only need to plug it into a usb port. The only downside to this is that it will need to stay in that usb port for as long as you want wireless on your pc. This may or may not be an issue depending on how many usb ports you have & USE. The pci one will require you to open up your pc and insert it into the pci slot. So this is a bit of extra work & will take up a pci slot. another tidbit is that USB is often more expensive then PCI for equivalent devices. Thanks to both of you for your replies. I'll contact T-W for the specs on the router.

Solve : LAN trouble?

Answer»

I have a linksys router that is hooked to a cable modem, VOIP modem and into my PC. Rrecently I have not been able to connect to the internet but the other computers on the network work just fine. The network is working fine, the task bar says cable is unplugged, yet I have checked the CABLES, they are all plugged in. So my questions is how do I check if the network card has gone bad? or how do I run a diagnostics to find the problem. I did the IPCONFIG and it says media disconnected, the PING works fine. I RAN the network diagnostic in WINDOWS and it says unable to repair the problem.

Thanksfsuwolf,

Maybe some dumb questions and dumb suggestions, but...... as a start:

You mean of course the PING was done from another PC, not from the troubled one.

On the troubled PC: if you click on the LAN Icon, does it show INTERNET connection and does it show LAN not CONNECTED? If no INTERNET is shown and LAN not connected, then your cable most likely is not connected.

On the Router check if the cable is plugged in correctly, that is, if the connectors are straight in. Sometimes the the cable is in but not properly seated (tilted). I think the Linksys has Pilot LIGHTS, these should be on.

Swap the cables around on the Router maybe?

Interchange the cables between PC's?

Can you get to the Router to check if all your PC's are on the DHCP list, (at least if they are Dynamically allocated)?

If it says cable disconnected & you are certain it is connected then you have a bad cable. You can test this out by using the cable from one of your other working computers. AlexK
I did the PING from the troubled PC and the IPCONFIG from the troubled PC and that is what is confusing me, I cannot connect yahoo.com or get my e-mail. Message is unable to connect to server.fsuwolf,

From what I can see, your physical connections are O.K. and it looks your Network Card is O.K. otherwise you would not be able to PING and getting the NOT CONNECTED msg etc.

Some Ports may be blocked or some other contradicting issues re: yahoo.com and e-mail.

My dumb suggestion is to delete the NETWORK connections from the PC, unplug and re-start. Then re-establish the NETWORK connections from the Control Panel by using the NETWORK WIZARD and let that one do its job.

Solve : Internet Connection Help?

Answer»

Okay, here's my dilemma. My computer's internet connection is not working at all. Moxilla firefox doesn't work at all, Internet EXPLORER PARTIALLY WORKS except I can't check any email from YAHOO, gmail, hotmail.

I've never had a problem with my computer until now.

I called ISP four times and they've run tests, but so far nothing has worked. I've turned off everything, unplugged the modem, and waited before restarting, it didn't help.

I'm using Windows XP, wireless DSL connection, the modem is 2700HG-B, and I have Norton installed. The other three computers in my house work perfectly. (All have Norton+XY+DSL installed also)

What can I do? I'm not a computer techie person so any help would do! (Please explain in very easy terms!)

Thank you in advance!!
Will your computer connect, if you connect it straight to the modem, bypassing router? What do you mean by connecting straight to the modern, bypassing the router?

With help from other sources online, I've tried the ping 127.0.0.1 and the ping 192.168.1.1 test. However, the ping 192.158.1.1 didn't work, meaning that I have a wireless connection problem.

And also I tried the command box-cmd....ipconfig ect.. which didn't work.

Thanks for your help.

Oh, I see now, you're using modem/router combo.
Did you try to hard wire the computer to the modem/router, instead of going wireless?
Is it laptop, or desktop? It's a desktop and it's wireless. However, I have another computer that's already hard wired to the modem/router. Quote

Solve : Real Trouble Setting Up New Router...Help Needed?

Answer»

Current configuration is as follows:

Motorola DSL modem paired with a Netgear Wireless-G router. Works fine, I have a connection.

There is a problem, though, accessing the router's BROWSER interface. This has happened since I reformatted my PC from Vista back to XP Pro SP3. My computer came with Vista. The drivers for my "1394 Network Interface" are generic, and I am afraid that although the blinking green light fuctions when an ethernet cable is CONNECTED (router to PC), somehow SOMETHING is not right. The router access address is not working (192.168.2.1). Perhaps I am entering it wrong? Do I need a port number? I run my PC wirelessly to the internet via a Netgear wireless PCI card that I have installed. It works fine.

My objective is to set up/configure my new Linksys/Cisco Wireless-N router (WRT160N). After I insert the included CD to begin the setup process, the setup process itself fails due to an error. The setup program tells me that it is unable to detect an ethernet port, and to enable it if it is disabled. WELL, I do have one, and it has a driver, albeit probably not the correct one. But it is there, and the setup program won't let me continue because it can't see it. Here is where the fun begins.

I have already tried reinstalling the ethernet driver. I downloaded a PC information program like CPU-Z and it revealed my ethernet connector's manufacturer whose name escapes me at the moment. Since the PC came with Vista, I cannot readily find any XP drivers that will suit it. In a desperate yet feeble attempt I downloaded and paid for a driver-updater program, to no avail. My motherboard is an ASUS NodusM3. I have also tried to connect the WRT160N to my PC to check for any viable communication. None.

So in a nutshell I can't get the router's setup program to believe that I have a viable ethernet connection, in which case I may not because I can't get the PC to run off the router via an ethernet cable. I can't even access the router via the browser. In this case will I need new drivers? If so, where do I find them? How can this issue be resolved. It really sounds like a driver issue to me. This is a weird problem. First of all when you say you get a connection when you a cabled to the router can you get on the internet? Are you sure your router's ip is 192.168.2.1 instead of 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1? I would go to netgear's site and download the manual to see what the default ip is. Also, when you connect wirelessly can you get on the internet or can you get to the router via 192.168.2.1?

As for your setup program not recognizing your network card it may very well be a driver issue. Do you know if your nic is builtin to the motherboard or is it an individual network card? If it's builtin to your asus motherboard I would go to asus website, search for the mobo & look at the drivers download section for it. If it's a network card by itself open up the pc & look at the thing so you can see where to download the drivers for it. Last but not least, have you tried removing the nic drivers from the device manager & forcing windows to install a generic one?install your network drivers. 1394 is firewire. you need NIC drivers.

If you don't know the brand/model of your network card, try downloading and running Everest.

Solve : internet connection drops out and is restored only by restart?

Answer»

My wireless internet connection drops out after a few HOURS. Windows still sees the router in the available networks list, but will not connect... Vista diagnoses the problem as no response from router. When I restart the computer the connection is BACK on every time.

The only thing I did to my computer before this problem began was create a new user account. And the loss of connection affects both my users. I searched around for a solution, but no avail. Any ideas?

I can't plug in for a wired connection, because the router is in the main-house where my landlord LIVES. His connection does not drop out like mine.

thanks y'all,
-ryan1) Are you running Vista SERVICE Pack 1? If not, install that first.
2) Also, download and install the latest drivers for your computer's wireless adapter. Thanks for the reply. I do have SP1. Also, I double checked the driver and it is up to date. I am current on Windows updates too.

Also, I just found out I can restore the connection just by unplugging the antenna's usb cable from the pc and plugging it back in. This is a much easier solution than restarting, but I need to be CONNECTED all day. What's your signal strength (how many bars)?

Solve : Setting up my own Server?

Answer»

Guess cause SMF 1.1.6 is not meant for windows, I'm USING windows platform.

I don't know how to start working on the FORUM design in windows!!

It uses YaBB I guess!!

What shall I do?!

P.S. I'm downloading YaBB right now!Again the downloading wasn't successful, It gives me an Icon on the desk top which won't run!!(I've given the screen shot)

Wait I'm thinking maybe I need to first upload my website on the server, maybe only then I can create the forum! Is that the case?

[Saving space - attachment deleted by admin]Ivy - if you are trying to run something from your puter using .PHP you won't have any luck - unless you are set up with your own server software on your hard drive.

The PHP will normally run itself only on a host server because that will have PHP available in almost all cases these days. So - your YAbb will have to be placed on a web host server to operate for you, tho you could get it running at home for TEST purposes if you set up your own server.

No link handy but within CH there should be some INFO about setting up a server on your own machine.Quote from: Ivy on October 28, 2008, 09:32:25 PM

Guess cause SMF 1.1.6 is not meant for windows, I'm using windows platform.

SMF is perfect for Windows. Does your webhost have cPanel installed?I still wouldent recommend a Windows server... thats the one thing that I dont trust with Windows. I had so many security permission issues with Server 2003... even with a program such as XAMPP, I still wouldent... I do use XAMPP as a temporary server when the main one is down though.

As said above, in order to run SMF, you need PHP for servers, and for YaBB, you need Perl for servers.
Shucks - had forgotten YAbb was Perl - so definite need there for SSI.

So many forum apps are php these days.

I have mentioned before a while ago - I do find ''Vertrigo" a very suitable 'on board' server platform for testing purposes.I'd run a server with Linux. I hope to do so, one day...I was loosing my patience with all these download problems!

So I have just Bought all the software I needed, so I don't have to bother about the downloads and the free trials etc etc.

So I bought:

1)Adobe Dreamweaver
2)Adobe Photoshop
3)Adobe Illustrator

Now I'm happy!!Is that part of Creative Suite 3 or CS 4 ? Just curious...I'm sorry AEGIS, I don't know what I was thinking when I answered this question last time, I must have been in a real hurry!

Its Creative suite 3 Family

Very cool -- I was just curious! I believe that includes the "bridge" software which lets you move your projects between programs. Nice.Quote from: Ivy on November 02, 2008, 03:36:57 AM

Nope, I'm not a bit jealous. For a beginner, I highly suggest you look into any service that has cPanel or a similar web administration program.
It just makes things easier, and ease is a good thing, I have learned.

Most good hosts that have cPanel arent overly expensive, even though subscriptions to cPanel are very expensive.

Solve : Disabling P2P file sharing on the network?

Answer»

Hello

Can I ask which is the best way of detecting P2P filesharing on a network. I'm not in a position to download analysers to a user's computer.

Ideally, it would be best if the programmes showed up in cmd prompt and I wondered if any of the netstat commands on a user's computer would do the trick:

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/systems/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.aix.prftungd/doc/prftungd/nestat_a.htm

Thanks for any suggestions.

SteveWhose computer are you talking about? Do you own it?Hello Broni

Thanks for your reply.

No, I don't own any of the computers which may access P2P filesharing programmes, but I am partly responsible for the healthy running of the network which these applications abuse.

Thanks. You need to explain better your relationship to a whole network, and computers involved.Hello Broni

I work on a helpdesk for a university responsible for Windows/Mac operating systems and the network itself.

The network is sometimes subject to abuse where students use P2P filesharing which drains the network, resulting in other students having intermitten Internet connection problems. A bit like living in a houseshare where one person uses up all the HOT water for himself!

We are able to detect some network activity using Wireshark, for instance, but it is limited. So, I wondered if it were possible, simply using a student's own cmd prompt to detect which P2P tools the student was using, and if devices were being used by that student's laptop (such as a router).

Where we suspect P2P filesharing we disconnect students from the network.

Does this help?

SteveI suspect you're way out of your league.
First of all, does your school policy prohibit using P2P programs on students private computers?
Secondly, who is in charge of enforcing any of those policies? You?one possibility would be to block ports used by common P2P programs.

And HOPE that no legit programs use them...Quote

one possibility would be to block ports used by common P2P programs.
Since the OP didn't answer my last questions, yet, you may be playing with serious legal issues.Well, He's already stated to be responsible for the network itself- it would be nice to know what it means to be responsible for the Mac/WIndows operating Systems, but simply owning the network is enough to block all questionable LAN ports. I don't see how this would raise an legal issues, really- it would end up slowing down torrent downloads, but they won't be stopped entirely, and in any case, everybody knows one of the prime reasons for using a P2P program has legal issues in and of itself, which would very likely prevent anybody from pursuing any legal stance they did have with the university.Quote
I work on a helpdesk
I've never seen any helpdesk person, being a network owner.Quote

It has to be proved in court in each individual case.Hello

Yes, it is because this is an issue I have not dealt with before and is probably above me, that I am posting this message - for assistance.

And yes again, it is the policy of the IT department to disconnect users who use P2P programmes on their own private computers.

I did not draw up this policy, but it is one of my ROLES to ensure it is put into practice. My apologies for lack of clarity. In addition to some network issues, I am also responsible for dealing with Windows and Mac problems. That's all I was trying to say.

Almost all users deny using these P2P programmes, but sometimes Wireshark picks them up and we can tell, too, by the amount of complaints which come in from other users whose connections are intermittent.

My original question simply asked if there was a way of picking P2P users up from the cmd prompt on the users' own machines - would they show through tracert, for EXAMPLE, or a similar COMMAND? - because we are in a position to go through, with the users, set up configurations on their computers.

I hope this clarifies things.

Solve : Networking through VPN?

Answer»

Hello Everyone,

New to the forums and already looking for some assistance.

My company is looking to have some INDIVIDUALS working from home, but have access to shared folders on our internal server. We have purchased a SonicWall TZ 180 Wireless with their Global VPN client software. My issue is that I am not seeing the shared data by going through My Network PLACES on the client PCs. I can use Remote Desktop Connection to log into the server and work with data on the server, but that is not helping me with sharing data.

Any insights or questions I should be asking SonicWall Tech Support, that will help me find where my BOTTLENECK is?

Thanks,
Kevin CorlissI don't know much about your router/vpn concentrator, and I don't know if the PCs used at home are the work laptops that operate fine at the office. Also if you're setup with Domain logins or a Workgroup.

You may try a more direct share mapping by using the DOS 'net use' command once connected to the VPN. This should bypass the need to browse to the share.

net use x: \\172.16.1.1\share /USER:username

The router may have a VPN to network rule-set that may need to be modified to allow the network-share traffic through (ports 137 to 139 & 445 on TCP & UDP), but your external (public facing) firewall should BLOCK this traffic.

Good Morning,

Do you have a server ONSITE?
Do you have share folders on the server? Have you opened a VPN connection on your router?

Solve : netgear usb - lynksys wireless-b router?

Answer»

I just bough a Negear Wireless USB WG111v2.0 and I have a Lynksys Wireless-B router. When I plugin my usb it says their are some wireless ACCESS points available but it wont connect to them. When i go view the connections, i double click on the only one which is my router and it says connecting... but never actually connects... just eventually stops trying.. when i click repair it goes through all the steps untill it gets to Connecting to wireless blah blah but never connects. I dont understand why.. I tried on two different computer connections and no luck... i tried with windows wireless manager and with negears.. doesn't work with any.

Please help!

EDIT: I just want to point out that when I connect with the older netgear usb adapter the WG111 it connects without a PROBLEM, instantly. That is enough reason to send it back to the vendor.
It's possible that the device has wireless-B disabled (on account of being Wireless-G) it's also possible it doesn't even support wireless-b connections. check the configuration on the adapter to MAKE sure that you have it set to 802.11b.

Also, does your router currently implement any wireless security?hmm.. im going to try to find out if it maybe is set to wireless b... i figured it would adjust on its own.

I had it set to WPA and when I logged in it didn't connect.. so i took off all security.. the problem remained.

Also: I had a lynksys wireless-n router a couple days ago untill it crapped out and I had to change to this old one. it worked perfectly with that one.I went into the adapter PROPERTIES and enabled the option that said Wireless 11B and it still doesn't work.. won't connect. its catches the access point but for some reason it just wont connect.

EDIT: after ENABLING wireless i was able to get it connected on my other computer through netgears wireless utility that comes with the installation of the usb adapter... but the thing is it says its connected but the internet isn't working... AND!.. i can't connect to the router.. so it says its connected to the network.. but its not.

but.. the thing is i was able to connect it once through the program on this computer as well... with the same result.. of not being able to connect to anything.Weel, let me make a suggestion. This has helped me. You can download a program called NetWorkMagic. No, I do not work for them. But the product is good for home users with limited resources. You can get a free trail version. About half the rime it will identify the problem. Here is the link.

Solve : Weird Problem (one way data transfer only....)?

Answer»

Hello friends...i have two PCs (say A & B) both running windows vista. A contain two lan cards so that it can SHARE internet connection. Internet is working fine on both computers. B can access and get data from A. now the problem is, when A try to access data from B, network disconnects and restarts AUTOMATICALLY (network). Every time same problem occurs.

Due to same reason i can't upload any file on internet using computer B, coz network disconnects (as told earlier)...

Plz help me guys...seriously i don't know what the *censored* is going on with them...
The reason why is disconnect is because it requires an IP address to upload/Download and browse the internet, therefore it needs to renew or get and IP address from the modem. So if A computer has the public IP address and then you would LIKE the B computer to CONNECT to the internet it will take the IP address from A to use it on B.

You only solution will be to purcahse a router with 4 port. Thnx for d reply, but to AVOID using router i am using two lan cards in computer A (one is connected to internet which is shared and other to my computer).
Internet is working fine in both but i can't upload nething on net using B (it disconnects when big file is to be loaded, then restarts).

This thing worked perfect in past, now i think there is some problem in firewall or anti-virus (AVG) in A, but i am not able to detect it...

Solve : Can not access computer file system?

Answer»

I have two windows XP Home systems networked through a router. Internet comes from Hughes to WAN input on router and the two systems are HARD wired, cat 5 patch to ports on router. The router is also wireless and connects to laptop.

I can access Computer "A" from Computer "B". Computer B can also access the laptop. The laptop can access "B' as well but not "A". I can ping from CMD to dani system fine. All are on WORKGROUP and all have Windows firewall on with file sharing accepted.

It would appear that the problem is WITHIN the "dani" system, Computer "A". All shares are set on each system. I have TRIED what I know to find the problem looking for a permission problem. None of the systems have a login or password set.

Any help would be appreciated.

Solve : Windows RDP and SSH Tunnel?

Answer»

Was wondering if a Windows Server 2000 running Terminal Services for RDP support through a PORT forward to this system in my ROUTER for port 3389 is secure enough or if I should build up a SSH Tunnel and then RDP through the SSH Tunnel?

Is RDP encrypted and secure or should SSH be added to eliminate a monkey in the middle from reading the logon info keystrokes passed to the remote systems between sites through the internet?

ThanksGood Morning,

Microsoft has released NEW updates for RDP. I have configure several Terminal server and we never had any ISSUES is regards to hacker breaking into the system. What I suggest is to secure your group policy and make sure your user password lock after 3 tries or eliminate them to Log onto the server after a certain time. Normally I set the user to Log onto the TS from 5AM till 10AM. This reduce hacking issues. Thanks!

I verified that I have the latest RDP for 2000 and XP systems and RDC for Vista machines. So I should be good. I also will implement that policy to shut it off on off hours, thats a great idea.

Solve : Computer will no longer connect to internet?

Answer»

We have a wireless network in the house that was installed SEVERAL years ago. Last week the desktop computer that I use in my office lost its ability to connect to the internet. The computer indicates that it is connected to the wireless network, but when I open the internet brower, it says it cannot display the home site (or any site for that matter). The computer will print to our printer, which is on a print server. My wife's laptop doesn't have this problem. It connects to the internet just fine.

Help!Go Start>Run, type in:
cmd
Click OK.
At COMMAND prompt, type in:
ping www.google.com
Hit Enter
What does it say?

What type of CONNECTION is it? What Windows version? What browser?Start, run, CMD gets me to:
C:\Documents and settings\Mark> When I enter www.google.com here, I get:
'www.google.com' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

What type of connection? Ethernet connection
Windows version? Microsoft Windows XP, version 5.1.2600
Browser? Windows Internet Explorer 7sorry. typing in ping www.google.com produces the following:

I want you to try Firefox as cross reference, to see, if you'll have similar problems.
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/Upon entering the address you suggested in my browser, I get the message:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage.

I get this message for any website I enter. This is my real problem. Clearly, I can connect to the internet as evidenced by the successful ping and the fact that Quicken can connect and UPDATE. Why can the browser no longer display webpages?Go Start>Run, type in:
ipconfig /release
Click OK.
Type in:
ipconfig /renew
Click OK.
Restart computer, and try to connect again.

If that doesn't help, turn computer off, disconnect router, and modem from power source for 1 min. Power modem, and a router back on, start your computer.
If that doesn't help, power down everything, connect your computer straight to the modem, bypassing router.
We'll go from thereI tried all three of your suggestions. None worked.Download, install, and run LSP-Fix: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Restart computer, and see, if it helped.
If not...
Download, install, and run WinSock XP Fix: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
Restart computer, and check again.I recently reinstalled windows xp and I'm now having the exact same problem. I tried all of the steps suggested above and got all the same results. I ran the LSP-Fix and no errors came up. I ran the WinSock XP Fix and still nothing. jezzo79

Solve : Peer to Peer program safety?

Answer»

My son has used a Peer to Peer program over the years on his computer. He has used Limewire, Bittorent, Bearshare, etc. Knowing this I have had discussions with him about the dangers of viruses, spyware, hackers, etc. but he likes the ability to find mostly music. I have secured his computer best I can. I learned a lot from this forum over the years. However twice in the past few years he has gotten a virus. Right now he is not running anything because I told him I would try to see if any one stood out as being safer than others. So here's my question, does anyone have a recommended P2P program based on it's safety features. For example, is there one that scans for viruses and spyware?

Another question is, can all P2P programs be configured not to share anything from his computer. He does not want to share anything, just download stuff.

While I don't like him using a P2P program, he is an adult and I am just trying to help him be as safe as possible.

Thanks,
JimP2P programs, when used for illegal activities, will almost always cause problems.
No P2P program is inherently safer than another, disregarding the programs that themselves contain malware.
Most programs can be configured not to share anything, however this is KNOWN as leeching and is usually frowned upon and may lead to slower download speeds on some networks.
My advice to stay safe is to install a decent antivirus program or suite (AVG is good, and free), a good antispyware solution (Spybot, also AVG includes some protection) and use common SENSE (don't download illegal files).A general rule of thumb:
Think of it as 50% of all P2P files being viruses... half the files I were looking for on P2P the last time I used it were...

Bittorrent is generally safer for various reasons, though, its not bulletproofed. You say that Bittorrent is generally safer for various reasons. Does it have a built in virus scanner? Can you elaborate on the "various reasons"?

Thanks,
JimThe reason is a little bit difficult to describe...
No, it doesnt have a virus scanner, but, Torrents are less targeted for hacking and for spreading of viruses, and you must have various users to actually have a fully working torrent...

If a user somehow got a virus, they would find out and would probably stop sharing the file. Thus, the file never really makes it "off the ground"

The second thing is that if a file is "accidentally" infected on another computer, it wont pass file verification, and the whole infection cant be spread, because it wont "fit in" with other parts of the file...

Try open source software such as emule (edonkey net) or azureus (bittorrent).

Notice: Girls end with jpeg, not with exe. If you download an exe (cracks, warez), expect a virus.
If you're downloading music, there won't be exe's, so there shouldn't be a problem.

If you want to be safe, get a virus scanner (keep it up to date). Scan your files before running it.

... works for me ....Quote from: slowfly on October 20, 2008, 09:42:57 AM

Forgive me if I'm wrong....but would that not be illegal?

Also, you should know that not all viruses are executable files (.exe).
Many viruses can be disguised or hidden (these are called Trojans).
Viruses can also attach themselves to files (called worms).I appreciate all the replies. I have on additional question. Is there a way to run one of the Peer to Peer programs and DISABLE the ability for the user to download executable, image or movie files? Quote
Is there a way to run one of the Peer to Peer programs and disable the ability for the user to download executable, image or movie files?
Music files may contain virus as well. I've used azureus a little. It actively prevents the sharing of material that has copyright. I don't how this aspect works or how reliable it is though. I'm using qtorrent for downloading large things. Just look over a torrent site and look good to the comments people post about it they ussually post if it's good or not. For small things like a song I use limewire, and I admit it's sometimes dangerous.

In limewire no matter what you look for, you always get on top of the results virusses with extremely odd TAGS, for example when I search on 'foo fighters' on top appear files with texts like 'foo fighters [removed]' etc, you can ussually tell that those files are not safe. I ussually only download a file that has .mp3 extension and has only the tags I'm looking for in it's filename.

Sometimes when you download a .mp3 and open it in windows media player it asks you to download a codec, never accept this, you'll probably be taken to a site to download a .exe which will infect your system. (you'd better use VLC player anyway, if that can't open it, delete the file)

I'd recommend a virus scanner and some knowledge on what looks safe. There is a bigger chance that you might fall for one of these tricks when using limewire.I edited the above post to remove references to material some may find offensive/objectionable.
Leejjon, we don't deal with pirated material here. The only torrents I can think of that people would be using (in a world without piracy) are for, say, Openoffice, Linux distributions, and other free/open source software that takes a long time to download.
These will always be safe as you'll find the torrent on the software's homepage.

Solve : One-Way Communication?

Answer»

I have 2 computers linked in a network. One computer uses WIN98SE, the other WIN2000. Until recently I was able to message the computers; using WINPOPUP.EXE from the WIN98 computer, and Net Send from the other.

Suddenly, I am only able to communicate 1-way. I can send a message from the WIN2000 computer and it will be received by the other, but the reverse doesn't work.

Each computer recognizes the other as part of the network; they are both part of the same Workgroup; and I can ping each computer from the other. I can share files, etc. with no problems.

I am using ZoneAlarm as my firewall, and if I turn it off, I can communicate 2-ways. The problem seems to lie with the ZoneAlarm settings on the WIN2000 computer. I have checked the firewall connections in the ZoneAlarm program, and I have, in both cases, the other computer's IP address as being in the "Trusted Zone". Nevertheless, the WIN2000 computer can neither send nor receive messages. The WIN98 computer indicates, though that the message has been successfully sent when I send from it.

Any ideas?
Tom
TomCorrection & Resolution

My initial analysis of the problem led me to BELIEVE ZoneAlarm was involved. It apparently was not. I found the WIN2000 computer would not receive or display messages whether ZoneAlarm was active or not.

I went to Microsoft's knowledge base, and found an article which said that in WIN2000 Net Send had a message queue which held a MAXIMUM of 6 messages. In order for the messages not be queued they had to be removed as they were received. After 6 messages Net Send would neither acknowledge nor display any further messages. This was the SITUATION I was apparently seeing. The article did not, however, give any information as to how the queue could be cleared.

Finally, I re-booted the WIN2000 computer, and (for the moment at least) I am back to 2-way communication.
TomThe use of NET SEND is not in Windows VISTA and the MS KB says that Quote

By default, the NET SEND command fails when either the source or the destination computer is running Windows XP Service Pack 2
That being the case. you may have got a recently SECURITY update forWindows 2000 that also turns off the messenger service, or something like that.
Anyway, there are other ways to send messages.

No, I have nothing to do with VISTA, and I didn't get the wrong security update.
So far as other ways of sending messages, I suppose I could use semaphore, but that's hardly efficient. The purpose of trying to find the reason for a malfunction is two-fold: first, so that corrections can be made, and second; to learn more about the system. If something works, and then suddenly doesn't work, there is a reason for this happening. Finding that reason is important. Doing something else really doesn't solve the problem, does it?
Tom Simple answer is that a early message service is a security risk. It can be turned off in SERVICES. You or a program turned off the service. I think that is what you are talking about. Here is a link.
http://itc.virginia.edu/helpdesk/softwaredocs/messagepopup/
This is NOT the same as Yahoo messenger or other IM programs.Quote from: Geek-9pm on November 26, 2008, 04:43:19 PM

Thanks for the response, but that was not the problem, nor did the link you provided yield any insight. Since I eliminated the message queue, as I said above, I have experienced no problems. The service was never turned off; neither by me nor a program.

Solve : Sharing my printer with my laptop?

Answer»

I cannot seem to get my laptop to recognize my PRINTER. I have the printer set to be shared, however' when I go to my laptop and "search" for the printer it cannot find it.

What am I doing wrong?? What are your connections and networking if any?

If printer is USB hook up - it's probably easier (WELL I do this anyways with 2º puter)) - to change connection to suit, tho printer is mostly USED on 1º work machine.

As long as DRIVER is installed in both machines I'd have thought you'd be OK.

Solve : Problems configuring Sitecom 54G Wireless Router?

Answer»

Hi all.

I'm having a very hard time trying to configure my new wireless router sitecom 54G...

As some other people, I too can get a connection (both WIRED and wireless) but no internet

access.

I think the problem is the FACT that it's not being able to obtain a dynamic ip address.

I've tried all I can remember - ipconfig/release and renew, several resets, several wizard

configurations, and none solved the problem.

The problem is not in the pc because both my desktop and my laptop are having the same

problem...

To see my status screen click here

When I click in "Renew" I get a message saying "Get dynamic IP renew fail!".

The router has a setup wizard which allows me to select the country and isp you're on (i'm

in Spain currently - Telefonica isp).

When I click on it it asks me to fill the PPPoE user and password (which I did). This was

unsuccessful though.

I also tried to configure settings manually and I had these options: Static IP address; Dynamic ip address; PPP over internet; PPTP.
Tried dynamic ip address and PPP over internet with no success.

This is what shows up in the router status:

Solve : Wired & Wireless Router?

Answer»

I just bought a laptop, which obviously has wireless in it. I already have a wired router and have three desktop computers hooked up to it. My question is, can I USE two routers to have all my computers connected to the Internet? I have wires running all over my house, but since I have a wireless laptop, I'd KIND of like to take advantage of that too. I would still like to use my wired modem since I bought it just a few months ago. I haven't bought the wireless router yet. I would first like to know if it's possible to use a wired router and a wireless router on the same network. This is a home network by the way. If I can't do this, I won't be that unhappy. This is my first laptop and it's pretty exciting to be ABLE to sit on the couch SURFING the web--even if I have a network CABLE running through the middle of the living room!

Any advice would be great. Thanks!I would use wireless access point which is a router/switch combined and with those you can use both at the same time you can use the wireless for the laptop and then the wires for the pcs
