Solve : Networked computer can't connect to internet?

Answer»

I posted this subject on the WinXP forum and realized it PROBABLY should be here.

One of the computers on my home network will not connect to the internet. The other two connect with no problem. This happened with no warning or changes to the computer. I have run the network set up wizzard with no success. I ran a diagnostic through Internet Explorer. It indicated and problem with getting proxy SETTINGS with Automatic Proxy Configuration mechanism. It ALSO said the default gateway entry is invalid but default gateway is same as on other computers. IPCONFIG /all says DHCP is not enabled but I have enabled.

Any ideas about trouble shooting this.

Thanks, Dave

Solve : XP PC not connecting to NAS Unit?

Answer»

I have installed a NAS storage device on a COMPANY Network
I can connect to & Map Drives to the NAS Shares from all but one PC
All the PC are running XP, but only one is running XP SP3

On the none-connecting PC I GET as far as clickcing on the NAS Server in My Network Places then get the message "\\server is not accessible. You might not have permission etc. The Server Service is not started" & ENTER Network Password box asking for the Username & Password to connect
I know the Username & Password to access the NAS are correct as I've tested them on another PC

Could it be SP3 is the problem ?

Any thought appreciatedtry going back to SP2 and see if it works. If so then I would say that SP3 was the problem.

Solve : problem with wrong pages going to wrong screens?

Answer»

Hi,
I don't know if this is a networking problem or a web design one or what. Anyway, we are a small manufacturing company with a few dozen PCs. We have an internal web based system which is hosted on a Windows Server 2003 server on an NT domain (confusing isn't it?). Let's call the web system abc. Usually abc works fine; users request data and the correct asp PAGES get returned to the correct PCs. However, occassionally the wrong asp pages end up at the wrong PCs.

The reason I think it MAY be something to do with networking is that I am told that this happend on an older web based system on the same network but hosted by an NT server.

Any ideas?

This just became a problem about a month ago but before then I could browse! I've tried using dial-up and wireless connections but they all say te same thing. Help pleaseWhat operating system are you using?

Click Start> Run (Or hold down the Windows KEY on your keyboard and press R)
And type:
CMD

Vista:
Press the Start button on your keyboard, type Cmd
Right click CMD and click "Run With Administrator Privileges"

Type the FOLLOWING:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Second step:
If that didnt work, find the Wireless icon on the system TRAY (next to the TIME on your start menu bar) and right click it. Click "Diagnose and Repair"
(There may be more than one Wireless icon in your system tray) ok I tried the first step and it says the requested operation requires elevation. what does that mean?
Then when i put in ipconfig/renew it said no operation can be performed on wireless connection while it has media disconnected. what does that mean as well?Quote from: lashun2006 on November 17, 2008, 12:55:52 PM

So, I take it you are using Vista?

"Requested Operating Requires Elevation"
Are you an administrator on the computer? You need to be to perform either of the actions.
To open CMD, be absolutely sure that you follow the Vista command prompt options.

This means you currently arent set to connect to a wireless network.... which helps us figure out what the problem might be.

Do you use Windows to configure your wireless network? If so:
Press the Start Button, and type:
Network and Sharing
and open Network Sharing (which will appear in the start menu)
On the left hand menu, click "Connect to a Network"

Its self explanatory from there.
ok im connected!! the media is connected it just keep sayin that its not! why does it say that?
and its still not working

I agree, quite humourous. The best part is that regardless of who tries to help or what their suggestions are, claims rise about "already tried that" or "didn't work last time" or "there must be a better way" Oh yeah, I just thought of a good solution.

Solve : Coverage range for WIFI adapters in Ad hoc mode?

Answer»

I tryed to set up a WIFI communication between two computers on the same floor, in DIFFERENT rooms, about 16 metres far from each other and some 3 walls between them. Tryed to do it without an access point just com-to-comp (AD hoc). Didn't succeed.
Can anybody tell me what's the average range for WIFI adapters working in Ad hoc mode?
Thanks in advanceThere are so MANY variables to take into consideration here, to be able answer with just a simple figure.

Wireless standard of the card? - B, G, N1
What are your surroundings made from? - Wood, Metal, Glass?
Are there any other TECHNICAL items nearby? - Other wireless instruments? - Routers, Mobiles, Taxi radios, Baby monitors?

I would say, as a very rough guess, about 30 metres - with GOOD visibility.

Don't forget when you go 'Ad Hoc' your computer assigns you both a TEMPORARY IP address - so if your systems settings are such that you're statically assigned then this could also cause issues.

Solve : Intel proset 2200bg wifi adapter not recognized?

Answer»

Hi,

I recently started having problems with my Intel wifi adapter. When I turned on my computer the other day, instead of picking up the signals it usually does, I GOT a bubble in the task BAR saying "a physical wifi adapter is not installed"

In DEVICE MANAGER the adapter no longer shows up in the hardware list.

I've tried REBOOTING to no avail. Anything I can do to get it back online again?

It's a Dell Inspiron 600m running Windows XP. Had all the latest drivers installed before it went haywire too.Go into Safe Mode and check Device Manager there for the adapter. If you find anything uninstall it and reboot. Check Device Manager in regular windoze / if not there go into control panel / add/remove hardware and do a search for new hardware.

Could be too that the adapter just went south

Solve : Internet connection lost.?

Answer»

ok about TWO weeks ago we got a new wireless package called u verse. Well about a week after that my internet would stop working after a random amount of time playing on the internet. I will be surfing the web and the boom for no apperent reason I have nothing. Well the only way to fix this was to restart my computer. So I start to look deeper and find out that according to mcafee my modem is actually disconnected from the internet. I think that this is wrong because I NEVER have to do anything to the modem to get it to WORK again, I only restart my computer. Plus other computers seem to work fine. Also it may be important to point out that once my connection goes BAD and i go into my network connections and look at my connection. If I try to do anything with it, it will take forever to open up, but anytime the connection is working, it will open in a split second. It will say my network is still connected until I try to repair then it SAYS it cannot reconnect. I have a Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection and am running windows XP SP3. I really don't think it has to do with the modem, but rather with my computer. I'm pretty sure my driver is up to date and I would think the network adapter thingy is ok because it works for a little bit, but I really don't know what I'm talking about, hence why I'm asking you guys.

I hope you understand, if you need something explained better, please tell me and I will try. This is still happening to my computer. In fact i have two computers right next to each other and mine lost the internet connection but the other computer is working fine. please help. i have no idea what is wrong.

Solve : Weird Wireless Problem?

Answer»

A relative has a weird wireless problem. Here's the story:

She has a linksys wireless-g network card. She's having it connect to a Wireless-G Linksys router. She is the only one out of the other three people in the house that is having problem.

The Routers SETTING are all correct.

Her wireless setting are all correct.

At first her adapter wouldn't find the broadcasting ssid of the router in same house but would find another one somewhere in the neighborhood. With a couple refreshes/tweaks it would show up but not connect.

Finally I reset the router, changed the frequency, and it would find it connect but work so slow.. then time out every now and then. Id refresh sometimes it would work but then would disconnect. I tried connecting to the router but it would timeout.

I went behind the computer and changed the antenna from pointing up to the side. The connection instently went up to 4 bars and 54.0 mbs. It started working at blazing speeds...

I restarted to make sure itll work..on reboot it took like 3 minutes to locate the wireless connection and connect. Once it was connected I opened the internet and it wasn't working. After some refreshes it finally connected to the google.. all this time it is connected to the router. Then it stops working again.. but still connected at FOUR bars to the router.. I tried connecting to the router but it would time out.

Then it disconnected all-together.

I can't understand whats wrong with it. No other computer is having problems. She had a USB adapter with the same problems, so she got a network card. Still, same problem.

Hope the gurus out there could maybe help out!If you make sure no other computers are connected to the router or internet, how is the connection SPEED then for the computer?Disconnected everyone but here and still didn't work.

I brought over a BRAND new netgear wg111v2.0 usb adapter, installed it, restarted and BAM after like 2 minutes it found the network and connected. The internet was working.

3 minutes later... bam... still connected.. no more internet.

Restarted adapter.. and wouldn't connect anymore.

So confused. The funny thing is that it used work fine a a couple months ago according to her.

Solve : Need help with my wireless usb adapter....?

Answer»

well first of all IVE got to say IM a begginer on computers xD

my problem is that om my desktop PC (windows XP SP2) i have a wireless ADAPTER(Nexxt Solutions: Wireless G 54M USB adapter)[link to adapter pic http://www.newtekuy.com/catalog/images/nexxt_nw230nxt16.jpg]which normally after loggon connects to my linksys (ROUTER) but YESTERDAY i let my cousin use the computer and the next day the wireless adapter didnt turn on on the computer and the sign didnt appear.
i thought it was disabled so i went to network mconnections and my connection wasnt there (the adapters light used to be on,now its not) and tryed to add a new wireless connection but the computer doesnt find the adapter (which is connected) this adapter installs itself when connected so it didnt have an installation CD when i bought it(from store).

Dear frens,
I have installed driver for USB modem and gllink hardware that is found ,i am trying to connect to the intenet via usb modem,i have installed, but when i tries to connect,it shows "Opening PORT and shows dialing icon "an shows dialing failed, but it doessnot connect.

i have named connection as CDMA which shows : GLINK cdma modem

when i looked up the connection prpoerties,it shows the Glink is connected via modem glink cdma modem(COM3) at speed 230400 bps under General tab, Note: less than that speed i.e. 230400bps then it show "ERROR: 691 hardware problem"
under networking tab,it shows 2 options
PPP:Windows 95/98/NT4/2000,internet as default
Slip: UNIX connection(i have tried it also,no changes)

PS: the usb modem deive shows yellow blinking light when it is connected to usb port, i am sure usb modem is working good

After 1 minutes of failed dialing,it shows
error #777(default number of my PROVIDER of usb internet). the connection attempt failed because the modem (or other connecting device) on the remote computer is out of order),what it means

i have looked at the device manager,it shows Port(COm & LPT)
under it,Glink port(COM3)
Communications port(COM1)
Printer port(LPT1)

and,
what is the problem??, the internet connection is ok in latop as my frens mentioned,i have bought of one my frens who had a laptop

Is there any settings to be changed in my desktop?

Please suggest me
Does the modem work fine in your laptop, but not in your desktop?

Does the software from your Cellular Internet provider say the signal strength is okay?
You can hyperTerm into the modem (com3) and "AT+CSQ" to see the signal strength on some 3G modems. Signal level should be LOWER than -90 (0 > -89).
i have COM3 but sonot know about "AT+CSQ" n signal level

Solve : Networking between Windows 98SE and Windows XP?

Answer»

Want setup a home network with the two OS mentioned in subject but do not know if this is possible.Main objective is to be able to use the broadband internet connection on both computers simutanously. So far as hardware I need to get a router,SWITCH,RJ-45 patch cable and a network card for the second computer that has the Windows 98SE OS.I have seen that there are routers available that have the RJ-45 ports and also can be used wireless but have read that the speeds and connectivity for the wireless can be a problem. Are there routers available that have the switching INCLUDED?Most wireless ADSL routers will support both wired and wireless connections.

The biggest issue you will have here is Win98 - it only supports WEP as the security feature for wireless. Which is pretty much crap at todays standards - unless this is going to be your hard wired connection?

The setting up shouldn't be an issue. Set up your network on the XP machine first, and in control PANEL, use the network setup wizard to save the settings to transfer to your Win98 machine. Make sure workgroup names match.if possible- hook the windows 98 machine up to the router via ethernet, thus avoiding the wireless problem regarding WEP.

It is possible- I currently have a windows for WORKGROUPS machine connected to the net alongside my XP machine.

With 98SE- as long as your network drivers are installed- you should be able to access toe net by simply plugging in the ethernet cable. Thanks for the replies. Will be using wired SYSTEM but have run into a problem in that I will have to install a network card in the Windows 98se computer and the Dynex DX-E102 card that I want use comes with software that doesnt list the 98se OS.Also the DX-E102 requires a 32 bit pci slot, the manual for the Biostar M7MKA motherboard says the isa slots are 16bit but doesnt mention pci slot bit.The computer is almost 9 years old but would like to use basiclly for just surfing the web,any suggestions? Thanks

Solve : Wireless Trouble?

Answer»

Sorry for the lengthy post, I'm currently having two problems.

The wireless problem: To set the FOREGROUND: I'm trying to network one Vista PC to an XP PC, using a wireless router (Belkin), the XP computer I need to connect via wireless and the Vista, wired (ethernet). Now the Vista PC connects fine, no problems with WAN. However when it comes to the XP PC, I cannot get it to work. The XP PC uses a wireless USB receiver (a dongle? ALSO Belkin), I'm sure the router is configured properly, however here's the thing; I can get the connection to work if there's no security present at all. If I enable MAC ADDRESS filtering/WPA/WEP, it refuses to work. I'm using the Windows XP wizard/ network connections to configure the wireless not any of Belkin's USB receiver software (it looks SOMETHING like that http://r1.umkc.edu/wireless/winxp.html). I have no clue what to do and don't like leaving it without any security because I've seen an unknown person connected to the router.

The second problem: As mentioned above I saw someone connected to my router (LINDA-PC) now I have no idea who this is, however it gets worse, I had to clear the security log (restore to factory settings) because I used the DMZ function and couldn't get the router to work at all. Is there anyway to find out who this person is or what they've used my internet connection for? Additionally I "flushed" the DNS cache, not sure what possessed me to do this as I have no idea what it does but thought for a mad moment it might help me network my two PCs. I live in quite an urban area and can't see anyone having technical PC KNOWLEDGE, maybe as far as using something like Limewire. I imagine they'd be close by if they were able to connect.

Thanks in advance. No worries I have sorted the problem.out of interest - how did you fix the wireless problem?
have a problem with mine too, just surfing around before post

anyhow, i doubt we have the same problem as my wireless adapter worked, and now doesn't.. so i'll make a new post anyway!

Solve : Cable modem networking?

Answer»

I have a cable modem and want to be able to hook two computers up to it at the same time. The PROBLEM I am having is I cant find a router that uses the USB connections instead of the RJ45 connections. My computer does not have the RJ45 PLUG and that is why I am hooked up to it thru the USB. Can I just use a USB hub or is there a router that has the USB connections instead of the RJ45 connections?USB doesnt work very well in REPLACEMENT of an actual Ethernet cable. Its very difficult to find cable modem routers or routers alone that support USB anymore.

You might consider buying a regular basic Network Interface Card (NIC)

You could get a USB one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=40000353&Description=network%20USB&name=Adapters%20%26%20Gender%20Changers
(Theres three on there when I searched for it)
You should notice that these are overly expensive for something that PROVABLY wont work incredibly well. USB is no replacement for an actual adapter.

Actual adapters:

Solve : Belkin Wireless Adapter, poor signal?

Answer»

hi all, back again ... (or should it be a sad face?)

BASICALLY, 2 PC's.. 1 connected via cable, which works fine. but then the 2nd PC connected via a Belkin N Wireless Adapter will connect/disconnect/run very slow.
the signal strength will jump from very high to very low, disconnecting me and making it pretty much impossible to do anything.

i have tried messing around with the Belkin utility, i have done everything i can think of - except call Belkin (which i will tomorow, but i prefer a forum post to a phone conversation. someone with a strong accent telling me to call my ISP instead.)

SO, the problem.

the PC, Windows XP home SP2 with the Belkin adapter, worked for over a month with no issues at all with a good speed. until 2 weeks a go. during these 2 weeks i have tried searching for viruses (none) and even reformatting (with system restore off). but i still have the same issue...
i don't have a hijack this file right now. i could put the hijackthis file on CD, but i doubt the comp is the issue.

the only thing that has changed since my wireless problem is i have new next door neighbours moving in. now i don't know much about wireless networking.. but this why my wireless adapter is acting wild??
i asked a friend, he seems to think not. he seems to think it is a "dead zone" (?) that may pass.. ??

i have done the obvious things like, turn off router 30 secs, turn off firewall.

after the reformat i did.. i don't ACTUALLY have a firewall or AV anymore.. nothing, all i want is my wireless connection back
the connection is there, but my belkin is just very slow.
any ideas?
thanksIf the connection is weak, then I have to say this:
Belkin, from what I have heard, isnt the greatest router company for signal strength.
Try using the wireless device in the same room as the wifi router, see if it works fine then.

If it works in the same room, consider moving your router to a different area. Preferably in the center of the most USED areas, and if you use it upstairs and downstairs, up higher on the wall. Quote from: Zylstra on November 23, 2008, 05:07:32 PM

i'll take your advice on Belkin not being the best for signal strength. have heard this too.
but, the problem still stands and i am not able to move my wireless adapter any closer than it is. there is some kind of interference between my wireless router and wireless adapter.
like i say, the belkin has worked fine with not a bad signal strength until recently.
any other ideas please? i must have to change my settings somehow, but i don't know how Is it possible for you to change the channel that the router broadcasts on? It should be in the Wireless setup of your router. Try a few different ones, if there is a router nearby that is on the same channel or other wireless devices like Phones near they may cause interference. exactly what i was thinking of, Zylstra... but how do i do this?
my router is a "Livebox" provided by Orange broadband... it has to be my new neighbours connection messing up the signal, i just need to know how to do this.

this PC i am posting with now (connected to Livebox via cable), i could look into it and press a few buttons.. but i really do not know what i am doing, so i leave that for you.

you don't understand how grateful i will be if you can get me back up and running on my wireless, i just don't know what to do. i have been trying on my own for long and it's not fun at all. i just need to change the settings/channel like you sayHello
Mr. Ted2

Zylstra is correct. Change the channel to the furthest allowable from what you are now using now and see if that helps. You can than determine if it's the new neighbors or not. To accomplish the change read the following.
How do I change the wireless channel of my Livebox?

Remember: It is advised to use a wired ethernet connection to do this. Using a wireless connection would work however, but when changing the wireless channel you will be disconnected for a couple of minutes.

* Log ONTO the Livebox configuration screen, either by opening a browser and typing in 192.168.1.1, or by double clicking on "Configure The Livebox" on your desktop.
* Type in the username and password for the Livebox (NOT your broadband account) and click OK.
The default values here are "admin" and "admin" for both the username and password.
* Navigate through the menu on the left:
Security -> Wireless Connection
* Change the "channel number" to any other allowed number depending on your location (country)1 thru 6 in U.S. and then click Submit.
* Wireless Channel is now changed.
Good luck and let us know if it worked. If not we will go further.

Ed
success!

Solve : internal NAT??

Answer»

I have two sets of IP schemes operating in my office. We'll call one 10.9.8.x and the other 20.9.8.x.

What I would like is to allow machines on the different ip schemes to be ABLE to see each other. I have NAT set up to allow the 10.9.8.x machines to access the internet VIA one of the 20.9.8.x servers; is it possible to do a similar thing internally?

I am not sure whether there is or not, but thought maybe SOMEBODY out there has some knowledge on this.

Thanks,
- DarrylHi Darryl,

Let me clear first. Now you have a NAT , its external NIC ip:20.9.8.x(one of them), Local LAN ip series: 10.9.8.x . So you would want a LAN more internally , right? so take a PC and set external NIC card IP is 10.9.8.x(one of them) , GIVE Local LAN ip series: 12.9.8.x (one of them). and share external NIC card IP 10.9.8.x(one of them). Hope it will help you.

Solve : Intermittent Wireless?

Answer»

I've currently networked an XP PC to a Vista PC, everything is fine I believe except the fact that the wireless disconnects after every 8 minutes. I have no idea why this happens although google searching yields many results, all very different . I've read lots of pages detailing about ipconfig/ renew in DOS also about the default XP wireless connection manager being too schizophrenic and always searching for a better connection. I am using the default Windows XP wireless connection manager and networking via a USB dongle (Belkin) and wireless router (Belkin).

Why does my wireless connection d/c after every 8 minutes? How can I fix this PROBLEM?

Thanks for reading. Again I've managed to fix the problem. Sorry for wasting your time.Glad to hear you FIGURED it out.

If you have any further questions, feel free to come BACK and post your question.
My first time here. I have SORT of the same problem and I'm confused. I have a laptop and wireless router and my internet connection works fine until my DAUGHTER comes home from college with her laptop. When she tries to do anything with her laptop, we loose our connection. The only way we get it back is to shut off the modem and unplug the router for about twenty minutes. Then they both reboot and our connection comes back for a littlw while. I am running XP while she runs Vista. How did you solve your problem?

Solve : VERY STRANGE internet problem.. please help! so frustrating!?

Answer»

Ok here's my story.

Randomly several days ago, I notice I can't connect to any webcam sites and I noticed they all used flash: stickam.com, webcamnow.com, etc. They just REFUSED to connect to the chat rooms. So now I notice the other day my FPS online game Combat Arms won't connect either. (their servers are up). It hasn't been able to connect for days. Then I try Pokerstars, it won't connect either. Then I try Limewire, it won't connect. I downloaded countless trojan remover + virus software, avast, etc. It did find several trojans and supposedly removed them but I still couldn't connect to these programs that use the internet on my computer. My internet works fine, including my INSTANT messengers, just these programs that use internet WILL NOT connect! So I tried my laptop and wireless card last night (I have a Netgear router and DSL) the same programs on the laptop would not connect either!!! But the internet worked fine.

*I have disabled firewalls countless times, checked internet settings countless times, rebooted my modem countless times, I have updated my pc* I never touched anything to make this stop working one day.

so last night I formatted my entire PC. I used the system restore that comes built in gateway... only to find this morning, the programs still will not connect, nor will the webcam sites. my internet is working, AIM is working. I did not touch any settings, i've got all updates. and my other computer in the house will not connect to any of the programs either. i ran virus scans on the other computer and nothing was found.

could this trojan I had destroyed my entire network and somehow buried itself into my line? I mean, I formatted erasing everything and this same problem is still occuring. Im not even sure it was the trojan that caused it. I have no antivirus programs or firewalls on my PC now that could stop these programs from running... what should I do?!?!?! Is your modem connected to a router? What is the make and model of it?

yes. Netgear wgr614 v5. i tried connecting without the router and it didn't fix anything. this problem randomly fixed itself after I CAME back from eat n park and called verizon again. apparently they made changes to my account to upgrade me speed wise, and lower my price??? ok im not gonna complain, lol, i wish they would have told me, but im glad everything's running again.

cripe that was a pain in the *censored*.

Solve : Network dll problems?

Answer»

Hi.

I have recently noticed that when I OPEN up My Network Places, there are no icons.

I can't open the '' view network connections''

When I click on '' Set up a wireless network for a HOME or small office'' , a get a window that states

'' This application has failed to start because dot3api.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.''

After I click ok, i get another window that says.

Rundll '' Error loading wzcdlg.dll '' The specified module could not be found "

I dont have a wireless network, but I am about to get one and this worries me.

Any suggestions?

thanks in advance

I run XP home edition service pack 3 by the way.
Its a issue with SP3.

dot3api.dll in WINDOWS\system32 should be at Version 5.1.2600.5512 after SP3 is installed. LOCATE it, right click it, and choose Properties, then click the Version TAB to confirm. Also, check the WINDOWS\system32\dllcache to confirm that both copies of
dot3api.dll is on the same Version level.

You have to register it again.

If not you can try to download a new copy....

http://www.down-dll.com/index.html?frameA=dll/d/dot3api.dll

I can't find the file dot3api.dll in the windows folder.

What should I do?

Thanks for the helpit's not in the windows folder. it's in the system32 folder inside the windows folder.

I checked the folder and also ran a search for the file...

Still no results unfortunately.

Should the NEXT step just be removing SP3 ?No...

Go here and a download a copy of the file.....

http://www.down-dll.com/index.html?frameA=dll/d/dot3api.dll

Than put it into your C:\windows\system32 folder.

do a reboot.

ok

I downloaded the file and placed it into the system32 folder, and rebooted.

I went back to my network places......still no icons.

I clicked on set up a wireless network for a home or office, and a window came up and said

'' The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\dot3api.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette. ''

After clicking ok, I got another window that was titled '' RUNDLL''......it stated

''Error loading wzcdlg.dll %1 is not a valid Win32 application.''

Solve : driver or Hardware problem with network adapter?

Answer»

Hi everyone

I have installed Windows ULTIMATE on my new motherboard, and automatically all except 2 components where not working when I checked the Device manager. Then I arranged one by installing the right driver, but still the network adapter which is

Realtek RTL8168/8111 Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0)
is EXPERIENCING driver or hardware software... I have then installed it manually by downloading the driver from another computer...and I have made it enable from the BIOS ALSO but still it gives me the same error and no connection...CAN you help me please?

SharonDoes Device Manager give any error details about the network adapter?

Right click on the network card in Dev. Manager and select properties....Under the "Device Status", what does it say?It says This Device cannot start. (Code 10)

Click Check for SOLUTIONS to see data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available

Have you tried uninstalling the network adapter driver and letting windows reinstall it for you?

Go back to device manager, right click on the network adapter, click "uninstall", and restart the computer.... Then when the computer boots back up, check device manager to see if the error is corrected... Or try connecting to some websites

If this does not work, try using this driver...

http://www.downloadpipe.com/Windows/drivers/review-Realtek-RTL8168-8111-Family-PCI-E-Gigabit-Ethernet-NIC-NDIS-6.0-1137875.html

install the chipset drivers for your new motherboard...how can you tell the motherboard needs chipset drivers? ...not saying you're wrong...just curious the Realtek RTL8168/8111 is the same as my motherboard's built-in Networking and the driver for that was on the motherboard CD.

In either case... if chipset drivers aren't installed for it there will be other issues...interesting..

Do all motherboards come with CDs........I replaced a motherboard in an eMachines computer that was given to me, but a cd never came with the board...

The chipset drivers seem to come with the OEM Windows Installation DISKS that came with the computer, because when I installed the OS, there weren't any problems..if you replace the board with another identical board and it's from the manufacturer, there won't be a CD.

however if you buy a new, completely different motherboard at retail from say newegg or whatnot the box itself will have the motherboard manual and driver CD. the driver CD has drivers for the integrated components.. USB controllers, SATA controllers, Audio, Video, and what-not.

shoot I got burned then

The board I ordered wasn't from the manufacturer, I don't remember what company I ordered from... The board was the same make/model as the original, but the bios version is different. Whatever the case, I didn't get a cd Quote from: blockHEAD on August 12, 2009, 03:31:19 AM

but it was an OEM model... built for the emachines, right? It may be exclusive to eMachines..

It's an AM37 Salsa motherboard with an HP bios

edit: the maker of the board is FIC...........Salsa is the identification used with HPQuote
HP bios

OEM. any "standard" motherboard will have a Phoenix technologies or Award BIOS... or perhaps some other BIOS company... but not a manufacturers.

As an example, if the boot up splash screen says anything about the manufacturer (such as Dell, Emachines, etc) then it's an OEM BIOS. mine for example basically touts the fact that the motherboard has a layer of copper.ok ...guess I didn't get burned then

Solve : Clearing Wireless History?

Answer»

I have a LAPTOP that will not access any other computers on the network. It will go on the internet and acknowledge the presence of other computers on the network (on the network tree) but will not show any shared files or other computers for that matter. Today I deleted some old network settings and now the laptop is recognising my network as an old network no longer in use. I'm ASSUMING that the settings have just become fragmented and jumbled so, is there any way to reset all my wireless settings and history?

Windows Vista btwahh this is INFURIATING! I have deleted as much history as I can (no registry changes), deleted and reinstalled the wireless drivers and still it will not connect to the other computer. It's not a FIREWALL issue (disabled it on both sides, moderate improvement once zone alarm is off).

I'm out of ideas... wait I now have media sharing...What changes were made since it worked last?
Have you tried using System Restore to take it back to a point where it worked? It never worked. I suppose a system restore to win XP would work but then I loose DIRECTX 10, the only advantage of Vista.

Solve : Dial-up internet access not working though wired network?

Answer»
Can anyone reach back into the dark ages of dial-up internet access? We are in a rural area and use dial-up for our internet. (Not willing/able to pay the difference to get satellite or buy an air CARD.)

I have three computers that have been networked through an old Linksys 5-port ethernet hub and am using Internet Connection Sharing to access the internet from any one of the computers. I had the internet connection on an older Dell Dimension 2350 but when the modem went out SWITCHED the connection to our Dell Latitude D830 notebook COMPUTER. When I had to leave for a couple of weeks and took the notebook PC with me, my son connected to the internet using the modem in his ancient HP Pavilion. Everything was working before I left – all computers could access the internet and see files/folders/share printers.

Since I returned and hooked the notebook back into the network, the two desktop computers can see the internet is active on the notebook – but cannot send/receive email, view web pages etc. File/folder/printer sharing is working between all the computers. All three computers are running Windows XP Home SP 3. I tried to ping the other computers from the notebook but that request timed out.

I have a feeling that it might be a problem with the hub because when I first hooked the notebook PC back into the network the file/folder/printer sharing was not working till I changed the cable to a DIFFERENT port. Is there a way to test the hub? I purchased (mail order/online) a router/switch I thought would work to replace the hub but the documentation says it won’t work with dial-up… so I could use recommendations for something that will work if my hub is bad.

Any troubleshooting tips you can share would be appreciated.
If you don't get any "TAKERS", here's a downloadable guide from Microsoft (457 KB): Troubleshooting Internet Connection Sharing on Microsoft Windows XP

You should be able to use the Local Area Network (LAN) side of your router/switch as a "switch". You don't have to use the WAN side connection. But having said that, the existing "hub" should suffice. You said it has 5 ports. You only need "two" to troubleshoot.

Solve : How Windows DNS Settings override that of Router's??

Answer»

Hi Guys!

I have observed a numerous TIMES that Windows very own DNS settings(TCP/IP Settings) have always a upper hand to that of what is set within the Router Interface(used to CONNECT with Internet)!

On running the nslookup command to scour the Real Nameservers, DNS settings of Windows always override that of Router's DNS entries?...How?

Please check-out the sequential Screenshots follow in a 'Real' sense!

[attachment deleted by admin]the PC makes the connection to the DNS server... if you set it to manually use specific servers it will use those, otherwise it uses DHCP to retrieve the DNS servers from the router.

The router doesn't perform any DNS lookups itself. Thanks BC!

That clearly means that if I wish to experiment with various FREE DNS offerings, I just have to alter those settings within Windows only & should not care of what's set within my Modem or Router...Correct?

OR

You think it is always better to SYNCHRONIZE DNS settings alike at both Windows & Router levels...to relish a 'Better Surfing' experience? Quote

Yes. In fact, it's best to leave the router settings intact- for the most part the router gets these from your ISP.

Quote
You think it is always better to synchronize DNS settings alike at both Windows & Router levels...to relish a 'Better Surfing' experience?

Doesn't make a difference- the router simply stores those settings and gives them out when a PC requests them. Otherwise the PC is free to connect to whichever DNS server it wants. Thanks BC!

for being descriptive. However, another query still ponder in my mind!

If that simply is the case then why OpenDNS Guys also emphasize on changing the settings within the Router as well.....?

Please go through the Screenshot....!

[attachment deleted by admin]if you change the settings on the router, and keep the settings on your PC set to get the DNS server automatically, then each PC will get it from the router:

PC: hey router. wazzap
router: wazzap.

PC: say, you got the ho-down on the p-dog DNS server's yo?

Router: yeah man, this is good stuff, here *gives DNS server addresses*

PC: thanks Dawg, peace!

The advantage is, this ghetto conversation occurs for every PC connecting to the router- without manually changing the settings on each PC.Great!

A BIG THUMBS up for you...!

Solve : Copying files PC to PC and PC to Ntwk Storage is PAINFULLY SLOW?

Answer»

Hi,

I have 2 notebooks, a router and a Netgear SC101 network storage device.

One notebook is Vista 32bit wireless to the router and about about 6 months old.
One notebook is Vista 64bit wireless to the router and about 1 month old.

The Netgear SC101 is CAT5 to the router.
The Netgear SC101 is a little less than 2 years old. It has plenty of space on its drives.

The Router is a Belkin - i forget the model number - it's about 2 years old. WEP is NOT enabled - it's totally open.

From time to time I copy all my data from my notebook wirelessly to the Netgear. I get throughput of about 5kbps to 35kbps. Downloading files from the INTERNET is wicked fast! File transfer from PC to PC and PC to netgear is painfully slow.

Why is this?

Thanks.

HerbWhat kind of throughput do you see when you download from the internet?Hi pragma, thanks for the reply. When I download stuff from the internet I get about 1.5 Megabits per sec.
HerbAre you a victim of the Vista slow copy problem? http://techxpress.wordpress.com/2007/04/29/vista-slow-file-copydeletemove-vista-the-woe-starts-now/Hi Rob,
Thanks for the reply. I don't know if I am. I have vista 32bit on one notebook and vista 64bit on the other. The one I'm testing with is the one that this thread is about is the vista 64bit with SP1. It's a new notebook < 1 month old.
HerbIs your Vista 32-bit running SP1 or SP2? If not, upgrade them.

You'll have to install SP1 before SP2, and it takes FOREVER. Just a fair warning. Hi killerb255,
Thanks for the reply.
My Vista 32bit is not even SP1 AFAIK. I haven't even done any testing with that one so that might not be an issue.
Herb987:facepalms: DUH!! I should have thought about these in the beginning:

1) Transferring files between computers using a wireless connection is going to be slow no matter what.

Granted Wireless-G can go up to 54 MBPS, that Megabits per second, not Megabytes per second.

So divide 54 by 8 and you get ROUGHLY 6.75 MBps (bytes is represented by a capital B, bits is a lowercase b).

However, that 6.75 MBps is under ideal conditions. Latency, distance between the LAPTOP and wireless router, obstacles, and all that play a major role in speed. You'd be lucky to get more than 3 MBps in most cases...

2) Copying multiple files simultaneously will also be a factor--the laptop's hard drive has to do more SEARCHING to copy multiple files from multiple locations on the disk platters. Your Netgear NAS won't suffer from this as much, as it most likely has a RAID array, which is striping the data across multiple drives.

3) Belkin products are notoriously crappy. You get what you pay for with these. If they performed as well as better consumer-grade routers, then they wouldn't be as cheap.

If you want faster file copies, use CAT5 between your laptops/NAS/router.

4) The reason you seem to be doing okay on the Internet is because your connection is only 1.5 Mbps. Again, divide by 8 = 0.1875 MBps. Since you're used to that speed on the Internet, of course you're going to say it's fine! However, copying gigs and gigs of files from PC to PC or PC to NAS over a wireless connection, and it doesn't seem as fast anymore.

Try the reverse: copy your gigs and gigs of stuff over the Internet and copy a few text files from one computer to another over your wireless. I guarantee you that your Internet's not going to seem so fast nor is your wireless LAN going to seem so slow...
killerb255 - Thanks for all the info.

Normally I backup my D:\ to my ntwk storage and its really slow.
How would I run the same test over the internet?

For example if I have a 100 Meg file and it takes a few hours to copy to the ntwk storage how would i test that over the internet to see how the speed compares.

Also what I might try is downloading some big file from the internet the way I normally would and then copying that same file to the ntwk storage and see if there is a difference in copy speed.

I'll let you know what I find out about that.

If you have any ideas regarding my question higher up in this post, LMK.

Thanks.
Herbkillerb255 - also regarding the CAT5 for notebook to router to nas - I've done that and there appears to be no difference.

I will try that again though - It can't hurt to test it again.

I'll let you know what I find out about this too.

There are several ways to pull this off:
1) If you chat with your buddies over IM (Yahoo, AIM, Live, etc.), try sending them a ginormous file. This will take forever--I guarantee. Conversely, have them send you a ginormous file. Again, it'll take forever.
2) Upload a ginormous file to some file sharing service like Rapidshare or Megaupload. Try downloading the same file afterward.
3) I'm not sure if this would be an option, but if you work at a place that allows you to work from home, and you sign into the corporate network through a VPN, try uploading/downloading from a company network drive. Again, this'll take forever...

Herb

This time, when you try it, disable the wireless connection on the laptop you're using. It may be trying to use your wireless connection during the file copy, even though you have a CAT5 cable connected...Hi killerb255,

I disconnnected all other computers from my network, turned off the wireless on the notebook in question, made that notebook cat5 to the router and the netgear sc101 was already cat5 to the router.

I downloaded a large file from the internet (MS Dot Net learning editions (the full install cd) from microsoft) and it didn't take very long (i dont remember the time it took) and then I copied it to my network storage and it took almost a day. I don't remember the times for each but the time differences were wildly different.

Sorry if this seems a basic question but am at my wits end trying to figure this out! I'm having no problem connecting to the internet using my account (administrator) but as soon as i try to connect as a guest it immediately says "connection terminated". I'm running windows vista and connect to internet via optus wireless. Hope SOMEONE can help! Cheers.

Adam. Are you connecting with a guest account on your PC or are you using a "guest" key for connecting to the wireless network? my partner uses the guest account on my PC for work purposes. As i said, cannot connect and there must be a simple reason why? Still stuck Try using the windows utility to connect and see if there is an error. It says contact administrator (me) or ISP...
Noticed that in the Wireless Broadband properties I am unable to view diagnostics or networks?
And it RECOGNISES the modem but have no signal...
And it won't let me set up a new connection, etc...
Might be time to contact Optus?
Cheers!

Solve : Can't get online anymore with my laptop..........?

Answer»

Hello,

A few weeks ago, I got a new modem from my ISP.
Before that time, my wireless connection worked fine with
my laptop.

I use the new modem with my desktop, and have a wireless router
that enables my laptop to access the internet.

Like I said, a few weeks ago, both computers worked fine,
now, since the new modem, the desktop has no more problems
accessing the web....but now my laptop does!

When I checked the laptop wireless connection; it says "connected to network" & "signal strength excellent"....but I can't browse the web at all (on the laptop).

This has never happened before; as before the new modem, bot computers were able to get online. The new modem seems to work fine too.

CAN SOMEONE HELP ME??

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
JohnHow did you set up the connection?
Normally you should go from the modem to the router and then true cable to the desktop and then the wireless should work.
It could be that the ISP is using a MAC filter to make sure there is only 1 device using Internet.
In the case I listed only the router needs Internet but if you did use the setup:
Modem -> desktop and modem -> router.
Than the ISP will only give Internet to 1 device. (The desktop.)
Well let me know the OS' of the systems and your setup.

When you change the setup and it is still not working:
Call your ISP and let them know the router needs the Internet.
They will change the MAC filter and thatway allow your router to have internet connection.

Hopes this works.
Let me know.

Jonas Hi Jonas,

Yes, I am set up already as you mention.
(modem/router/desktop)
The odd thing is, this set up all worked fine for over a year.

Then, got the new modem....now the laptop won't access the web.

I wonder if I am supposed to re-install the wireless router using the cd they gave me???

Yet I don't see how that could be the problem because when my laptop is on; it tells me I am "connected to network" & "signal strength is excellent".

But try to get online with the laptop....nothing.
Use the desktop to get online...no problem!

I am so confused! Wow! A problem almost exactly like mine. My post here.

I have had some other issues also because I have several things going on, but this sums it up. Finally, I am at the point were only my wireless is not working. Sometimes I can connect just like you. Sometimes I get "limited or no connectivity". One night my IP address changed and ever since I have been fighting with Time Warner over what the *censored* they did. I have reset my entire network back to factory default and all kinds of stuff. My house is torn apart. I had problems forever just trying to get two hard wired desktops to work with my router after their little change. Suddenly, It just started working one night. Now I have to FIX this laptops issues. I can connect to other networks just fine. I took it down the street and had no problem connecting to another network and browsing the internet. I'm real close to ditching Road Runner...

I'll keep you informed.1. Verify first if you have active internet connection from your isp to make sure.
>modem and desktop should be connected.(bypass the router)
>check the lights and cables
>try to go online - if yes, check the ip addresses
- if no, power cycle the modem or restart computer
2. Connecting the devices together. (modem - router - computer)
>if you are able to go online DIRECTLY to the modem connect the devices together,
>try to go online - if yes, thats good
- if no, the router might have gotten reset, you have to configure again the router.
3. If your desktop can go online, PROCEED to your laptop.
>if you're connected but unable to go online, delete some web history, cookies etc (internet options)
Rasilun, use your own thread, what you are ATTEMPTING here is called hijacking a thread. Get your own thread and stick to it.

Solve : dial up testing?

Answer»

I'm trying to figure out if the telephone lines around this house SUPPORT 56k dial up connection SPEEDS...

I just tried dialing the 3Com Line Test here:

http://www.modemsite.com/56K/3comline.asp

The problem is that the modems for this test are LOCATED in Illinois (USA) and the phone account that this computer uses does have have long distance dialing rights..

Is there a website anywhere that gives a list different modems available for this type of test, with there locations?

Where are you located, perhaps we can find one.Well, the computer that I'm testing from is located in Elderwood, California....Approximately 5 miles from Woodlake.

As I said, it's got a dial up connection (V.90 modem and service) and I'm trying to test the lines to see if they support 56k speeds... I'm pretty sure I'm dialing a NUMBER that supports 56k speeds.... The only other thing I can think to check are the phone lines.......The computer is only getting 28.8 KBPS download speeds... If I can confirm that the lines around the house support 56k, I think I can get the download speed to jump up a little higher by checking some other stuff..

Solve : Assigning Static IP address?

Answer»

Hi,

I want to assign a static IP address to my computers on my home network.

I noticed that in the settings of my router there is a "DHCP" option which allows it to give certain MAC addresses a certain IP. However I also know that there is an option in Windows (I use XP and Vista) where I fill in the IP address, subnet and default gateway and also the DNS numbers.

So do I use the one on the router or the one in windows to assign static IP? Is there a DIFFERENCE?

I have TRIED using the router one but it works on some computer but not OTHERS. I have set my window's settings all to auto detect. So why doesn't it always WORK?

Thankshttp://corz.org/comms/hardware/router/static.ip.address.php

Solve : Internet only allows web-browsing, nothing else!?

Answer»

I am having quite some issues with our internet. We live in a rural area where landline broadband and cable internet are unavailable... we are actually in the woods surrounded by FARMS! Our only option for broadband at a DECENT price is "wireless broadband". Essentially, it is radio/cellular signal (as far as I know) that is sent to a receiver from a tower and then converted into internet. We were going with one company and were only receiving about 200 Kbps download. It cut in and out, and obviously went very SLOWLY. So, we decided to shop around and see what else we could find. We found another company for less money per month and decided to switch. According to speedtest.net, we get MUCH faster speeds with this new company, usually between 1.75 and 2.5 Mbps. It really was too good to be true, though.

A day or two after we got this new internet, the provider told us he had to switch over some equipment and the internet would be down. No big deal. Standard stuff. So the internet eventually comes back up and all seems well, until we realize we can almost do nothing we used to. We can browse the internet very quickly, just like the speedtests show. We cannot connect to anything but web pages though! Yahoo euchre (or any game servers for that matter) - we can't connect. It just times out. I play games and chat online. I can't connect to any logon servers for any games. America's Army 3, LIVE for Xbox/Vista, Enemy TERRITORY, etc etc. I also cannot connect to a friend's Ventrilo server... well, i take that back. I *can* connect... after waiting 10-15 minutes. I'll hit "connect" and it just sits there for said amount of time until it FINALLY connects. Once its connected, ping is low and there's no lag. But everything else times out before it can wait for so long to connect.

So, i would really like to get this fixed. One thing i do know is that when my ISP switched equipment, he actually changed who he got his internet from. It at first said "Charter Communications" when we ran speedtests, but now it says "Verizon Business". It also says we are in Illinois, but we live in Michigan. >.>

One friend suggested it could be the router, but i can confirm that it is not the router. With the old company, we had no PROBLEMS. Now we have this new company with the same router and all this happens. I also went into the routers settings and did some port forwarding and changed the firewall settings with no luck.

Another interesting note is that when i use the windows comand (cmd) program, i can ping all said servers (game servers, Ventrilo servers) without any problem. The packet replies come quickly, but if i actually try to connect to any of them, it just times out.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. If you have any ideas on how WE could fix this or how it could be our fault, let me know. If you think it is nothing to do with us , but rather its all the ISP's problems, chime in and let me know that too. We have contacted the ISP a couple times but with no response... its a local company and run by one guy... hes always busy and it seems customer support and care are on the bottom of his list.

Thanks again!Just an update - ISP called a few minutes ago, and we had him to try to connect/ log into the same things we have trouble with, and he has the same problems! So, it must be something with his equipment that he recently just switched to, or the provider that he gets his internet from to sell to us. Hope he gets it figured out Sound like everything but port 80 is blocked can you connect to secure webpages like https://gmail.com ?

You should ask your ISP to check.

Solve : Slow download speed?

Answer»

I have a terrible download speed, when I download SOMETHING from a regular internet browser, I get about 30kbps, but when I download something through a p2p network (ex. uTorrent or Vuze) I can get close to 1mb per second. This didn't START happening until recently. Any advice Quote

from a regular internet browser, I get about 30kbps
This is incorrect. All browsers report speed in KB/s.
1 KB/s = 8.192 kbps

Kilobytes per second = KB/s
Kilobits per second = kbps

So, in your CASE...
30 KB/s = 245kbps = 0.245Mbps

Solve : can't access pc remotely?

Answer»

I have been trying to access my home computer remotely. I have DynDNS account and the updater installed on the computer. I can connect from my laptop to the desktop by remote desktop connection and it works correctly. But when I TRY to connect via the DynDNS account it says it can't connect. I have tried all different settings in the router to try to let it through. I have port 3389 forwarded to the static ip of the desktop computer. I remoted my anti-virus and FIREWALL software to make sure that wasn't blocking anything. Windows firewall is also disabled and also on the exceptions list is remote desktop connection and also port 3389. Any ideas on what else I can try to get the connection to GO through? Thanks.Make sure you forward the ports from your modem to the router and from the router to the computer (if you have a router).

Make sure the box is checked to allow remote desktop connections in the properties of "my computer".the ports are forwarded and remote access is already checked. I can remote connect from the desktop to other computers but it won't allow incoming connections. It should be checked on your desktop and not just the other computers. Make sure if you're somewhere outside of your LAN you have to connect to your modem's IP.I can ping my ip address and the dyndns address and both workI finally got it to where I can access my desktop from my laptop using the dyndns domain name in remote desktop connection but I still can't access it from another computer not directly connected to my router. I think my problem now is that my ISP is a wireless DSL and the antenna has a router in it. when i do some tracing i find that it shows the ip number for the local internet is one thing and mine is another on my computer, so i think it is an issue with having 2 routers and getting everything forwarded. any ideas on how to forward an ip to another ip?my problem is now fixed, the terminal services port 3389 was blocked by my isp.How was your problem fixed? Did the ISP unblock port 3389 for you?My ISP UNBLOCKED port 3389, easy up the 2 firewalls on their END, and gave me a static ip number.

Solve : Access server off shared internet?

Answer»

Done some digging haven't come up with anything as of yet. I have a small web server with a USB wireless card shared to my switch. I'd like to set up a file (FTP and Samba) off this shared internet CONNECTION, but I don't know how to set up port forwarding to this from my main wireless router. Do I set it for the computer sharing the internet? And how would I be able to access the fileserver like this? Can you further explain what you are trying to do?*censored* that was fast. I have two computers right now:

A webserver that has a wireless card in it and a second computer as a file server. How would I externally (IE my DOMAIN name) connect the fileserver if it's using the shared internet from the webserver.Do you want to connect the file server to the internet or the LAN?

What OS and service pack are you running?

What server package are you using?Want to connect the fileserver EVENTUALLY to the internet for remote access to my files during college classes, etc. Both are running XP SP2. I'm using Apache 2.2, PHP5, and cygwin SSH for the web, and I'm going to use Filezilla on the fileserver. Why haven't you GONE up to SP3?Not a big fan of windows updates, just a personal thing.BumpSP3 does have some crucial stuff in it. If you don't want every update that they throw at you then use the customise button instead of the express one.So yeah, no go huh? That's cool

Solve : SSID disabled?

Answer»

I disabled the SSID on my Linksys ROUTER by mistake. I have been ABLE to locate the router in the control panel and I designated it as the number one PC but I can't get it to connect. How can I view the router so that I can change the SSID broadcast to enable?what kind of router do you have
Connect to it with a network cable, INSTEAD of wirelessly. Then type in the IP address in a web browser and you should be able to configure it.
If you remember what you set the SSID to, you can manually enter it into the wireless config on your computer and it will connect.

Default router settings are what you want for cable modem.
http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2591
All you should have to do is unplug the router for a few seconds and then plug it back in. It should automatically reset.Actually, I've found with mine (Linksys) that it NEEDS to be unplugged for about 30 seconds to fire back up again. I TRIED it for a few seconds a number of times and it didn't work. I finally talked to someone in tech support who recommended unplugging it for 30 seconds and that's worked fine ever since.Yeah, sometimes it takes a few seconds for capacitors to discharge. In my case it's essentially instantaneous - but it varies with the hw.
