Solve : reading Nbtstat display results from a Command Prompt?

Answer»

I recently posted a topic about understanding Netstat.

I have another similar command line function I wish to know about and that is Nbtstat.

I cannot SEEM to get it to do anything much on my computer. Then, if I can get it to work, how do I interpret the results? I am using the Vista Home Basic OS on an HP laptop.

The only function that works is nbtstat -r.
nbtstat -RR says "failed Release and Refresh of Registered Names" and " access denied"
nbtstat -n
nbtstat -c both say no names in my cache
nbtstat -S
nbtstat -s both say no connections
nbtstat interval does not seem to work

In the Netstat topic I posted, I was told that the interval is to enter a time-not the word "interval".
I tried this but did not seem to get any result. Maybe I was doing it wrong.

While looking at the Internet for information on this nbtstat topic, I see some of the things it is supposed to do and I don't understand why I cannot duplicate these things on my computer. What am I doing wrong?

Once again, any help in understanding is appreciated. Thanks.

are you running this as administrator? In vista if you do not right click and select run as administrator specific functions do not or can not run correctly. I thought about that and tried signing on as the administrator. Unfortunately, I was getting the same results both ways.

Maybe I was doing something wrong in my attempt at being the administrator and as a user.

Thanks.being signed in dose not mean that you are running the program as an administrator. You still need to do the following:

click run
type cmd
right click the cmd icon in the programs window
select run as administrator

also you can use ctrl+shift+enter to access the application as the administrator. Thanks again for the reply. I'm not sure if I understand you. You are giving me these commands in order to pull up the Command Prompt black box, right?

Otherwise, I may be MISUNDERSTANDING you.

I am using the black box to enter my nbtstat commands. If you are talking about something else, please restate your intentions for me. Sometimes I have a hard time grasping the obvious. Sorry for that.yes these are to get you to the command prompt or "black box".

you should be seeing the following:
see attachment

you get this by right clicking on the program. Let me know if you are still not sure what I am talking about.

[attachment deleted by admin] I'm sorry but you have lost me. Obviously, I am not with you somewhere along the line.

If I (mis)understand correctly, we are in the black box, correct? And yet, no matter where I click or right click, I cannot get a box with the Run as Administrator option anywhere.

Yet from your picture, you do not seem to be in the black box. Are you in the Run box? Well, I tried that too and could not reproduce the Run as Administrator option.

You say something about the Programs box. Yet I am not sure where or how or which program you mean.

My version of Vista is the Vista Home Basic that came with the computer. Could that have anything to do with it?

I GUESS you'll have to take me through this step by step.

I hope you will forgive me for being so dense on this. I told you I sometimes get bogged down on the simple things. Thanks. A small followup: I just discovered that I am able to right click on some (but not all) desktop icons and pull up the box that has Run as Administrator. But my Command Prompt box is not on my desktop. Do you think it might access that Run as Administrator box if I try and put my Command Prompt box on my desktop?

Surely, there must be an easier solution that I am overlooking. Thanks.

FYI for what it's worth.yes and no problem.......

when you click on start you see the box that comes up. at the very bottom there is a box you can type in that says "Start Search". click in the box and type cmd. you should then see something close to what I had in the image from the previous post.

I have just time to reply quickly before going to work. I work 2nd shift.

Yes I see the Start Search and I typed in cmd. Then what do I do? I decided to right click it but did not get the Run as Administrator box. Am I jumping ahead too quickly?

just a bit you need to look at the top and you should see cmd.exe that is what you need to right click on. Please see attached:

[attachment deleted by admin] OK, I have been successful in following your instructions. I got to the Command Prompt after hitting the Run as Administrator selection by following your photo and instructions and the black box came up saying C:\Windows\system32>_

I take it that I am now 'on' as the administrator. I typed in my nbtstat letters and this time I see a few different things as best as I remember.

For nbtstat -R and -RR both seem to work saying that there was a: successful purge and preload of the NBT Remote Cache Name Table. And that there was a: NetBIOS names registered by this computer have been refreshed. I don't recall these working before.

nbtstat -c and -n still say No Names in my cache. But the -n function gives me a NetBIOS local name table consisting of 5 names-the name of my computer and the word 'workgroup'. That seems normal. But why does it say no names in my cache?

nbtstat -S and -s both say No Connections. What is going on about that? How do I get connections?

nbtstat interval......well, I type in a time, say, nbtstat 3, and nothing happens. Maybe I am typing it in incorrectly.

The same with nbtstat -a and -A. I am not sure how to use these functions. I take it that you are supposed to put in a 'friendly name' for nbtstat -a and an IP address for nbtstat -A. OK.

But by doing so, I am lacking an understanding of why I would WANT to do that. What information would I be looking for by doing that?

Thus I am now back to my original questions. How do you use nbtstat and what is it used for and how do you interpret its results?

There are also a couple of questions from my textbook that I wanted to do. They are:
1. Display the name table of a remote computer or server.
2. Show the contents of your computer's NBT cache.
3. Obtain a list of names resolved by a WINS server
4. Display the IP address of a remote machine.
5. Empty and reload the remote cache name table.

I think I just did #5. But the other present problems in doing since I am getting no names in my cache to work with. How do I get names into my cache?

I hope you don't think I am trying to get you to do my homework here. Actually, I just finished the course in Networking but we did not cover the entire textbook and so I am taking it upon myself to try and learn the rest on my own. It was an introductory course.

Thanks again and I hope we are making some progress.

Solve : Connected to internet and computer blue screened!?

Answer»
I connected my new IBM Smartpad to the wireless internet (Lynksis) and a blue screen popped up and said it was shutting down to protect the hardware or something. Now i can't use my laptop. Everytime I TURN it on it makes it to the main screen then ...blue screens. Help!Could you please post the information that is displayed on the Blue Screen...It only stays open for about 3 seconds but says something like the computer is now shutting down to protect my harddrive. It did this once before and I sent it in for repair, and now it is doing it again. I have only had it for a short amount of time. I can connect it to my friend's secure network, but when I come HOME to connect it to my roommate's unsecured wireless it does this. Is there maybe a WAY to turn the internal wireless modem off in the laptop?Boot your computer into Safe Mode (power on the computer and tap F8 immediately until you come to the Advanced Boot Options)

Select Safe Mode

Once you are in Safe Mode, click Start>Control Panel>System>Advanced Tab

Under "Start Up and Recovery" click on the "settings" button, then under "system failure", uncheck the box that says "automatically restart", click on "ok", restart your computer and LET it boot up as it would normally and when the blue screen appears this time, it will stay on the screen and you can see what it says. Write down everything it says (exactly) and post the info. on your next post.

Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.ok, went to blue screen and did everything you said...

I actually went back into safe mode and went to the Device Manger under "Systems" and went to Network Adapters. Disabled the following:
Intel(R)PRO/1000MT Mobile Connection
and
Intel(R)PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection

Restarted computer and no blue screen and no connection to internet, which was what I had hoped. But I know if I enable them the blue screen will re appear. It has to be the unsecured wireless LAN network I have connected to. But how do I delete that connection so it doesn't reconnect to it when I disable the two network connections again? Solve : RAID over Network?

Answer»

At school, I've setup a network. 5 computers connected to a switch. Already I have a shared folder on one computer. This gives us about 180GB.

What I need to do is have one shared folder that uses the DISK space of all 5 computers, instead of just one. Thus giving us around 900GB. Is it POSSIBLE?

OS: Win XP.Hmm, found the answer to my own QUESTION after a while.

It can be done with iSCSI.also check out distributed file SYSTEM

Solve : Need help with a wireless printer?

Answer»

I'm trying to add a wireless printer to my network. I have a Netgear router and the paper I printed out after setting it up has 3 setting on the top.

One says SSID, one says Security and the other says Passphrase.

The printer automatically detects my network and tells me to enter my Security String.

Is that item 1, 2 or 3? I've tried all 3 and it still won't connect. How do I double check my Netgear settings to make sure what I have is correct?1. I'm not sure. In order to communicate over a wireless channel, the nodes at each end must be USING the same channel (e.g. 1, 6, 11), communication standard (e.g. 802.11g), and security SCHEME, if any (e.g. WEP, WPA, WP2, none).

Log into the router configuration pages to verify the current configuration of its wireless access point: Service Set Identifier (SSID), security scheme, and passphrase. The printer needs to match these. If printer doesn't support the current security scheme, you'd have to modify the router's to one that it does support. All wireless computers that will access the wireless printer through the (wireless?) router need to be using the same wireless configuration.

Try to provide:
a. Make, Model Number, (and Version, if any) of wireless printer (probably on the BACK)
b. Make, Model Number, (and Version, if any) of wireless router (probably on bottom).

Perhaps someone can pull the documentation off the INTERNET to make sense of what they are asking for.

2. Not sure if it matters, but what operating system and service pack level is the computer you will be "test" printing from? It must provide or you will have to install a compatible print driver for that printer. For example, Windows XP HOME Edition SP3.

Solve : Internet Network Troubleshooting?

Answer»

Well my ISP is Comcast broadband and I am getting kind of fed up with page time outs and random disconnects. The problem isn't with my home network and appears to be on the ISP side or ISP backbone provider. Persistant pings to comcast are flawless with 0 lost packets, yet to just about all other sites persistantly pinged there are lost packets.

Attached is screenshot showing lower left of persistant flawless to comcast, and google top left and yahoo top right with packet loss, and blizzard in lower right with 100+ms latency's.

Anyone know if this is the norm or should I COLLECT data with batch loggers and try to convince comcast they have a problem or one of there backbone internet providers has packet loss.

How is everyone elses persistant pings to Google and Yahoo...do you also see packet loss, yet none with your ISP as well.

It could be argued that traffic to yahoo and google are causing the lost packets, but traffic I would assume would add latency in resolving and not time outs. With response times near 30-40ms and time outs, if traffic was the culprit I would expect larger LATENCIES than 30ms between dropped packets.

*Update*- Traceroute also attached. Going to try all the hops to see where it gets BAD... That might show where the issue is maybe.

[attachment deleted by admin]The use of "ping" and "tracert" are not reliable methods for determining latency or packet loss. Try this: http://www.speedtest.net/
Instead of tracert, use this: http://www.r1ch.net/stuff/ftrace/
I would recommend posting your issues here: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/comcast

You will first need to post your modem signals, which, if out of range, will cause page time outs and random disconnects.Hey Thanks... will check those out.

The problem starts at [ 72.14.236.200 ] and I tried a reverse DNS lookup to see who owns it, but its masked and only shows up as USA. Ran persistant pings to all hops side by side logging them with %date% and %time% writing to logs and this IP is where it all starts to go bad. Everything there on to google shows bad as a result of this intermittently bad hop.

Comcast support was just about worthless trying to explain to them that there is no problem with my home or them, but that there was a problem further up their ISP backbone, their ISP provider.

Google also has no contacts for this type of reporting. Would be nice if there was a place to contact to tell them to add this IP to an exclusion hop list so that its not used and instead an alternate route hop. Or let alone be able to contact the owner of this IP to see if they can resolve the issues in some manner.

[attachment deleted by admin]Query the modem, USUALLY: http://192.168.100.1/
Report back signals. SNR and power levels and the ones to concentrate on, but just post the whole page.
There may be no problem with your home, but Upstream and Downstream signals can indicate problems between your home and the CMTS (i.e., Head End or cable plant).

Comcast 1ST line CSR's are worthless trying to explain any of this to, don't waste your time, however they can see your modem signals as well as you can. Comcast techs monitor and contribute to Broadband Reports.

Shouting? I'm not familiar with WiMAX, so bear with me.

What are the hardware components of your network CONFIGURATION?

Is there a WiMAX modem in your home/business which communicates SIGNALS to and from your ISP? Or is there a WiMAX adapter on your computer which communicates directly to some WiMAX station (beyond your direct control) miles away which relays it to/from ISP?

If there's a WiMAX modem in your home/business, does WiMAX modem connect to a home router to which your computers connect either "wired" or "WIRELESS"?

I would look at configuration OPTIONS of home router or in-home WiMAX modem for capability to setup logon credentials at those "choke" points for an always on connection. But once again, I'm not familiar with WiMAX. Love to know more about it.

Solve : Australia To Get Nation-Wide Fibre Optic Network?

Answer»

If you havn't heard, Kevin Rudd has annouced a nation wide Fibre Optic internet network.

Built from scratch at a wopping 42billion dollars.

Quote" It would deliver broadband speeds of 100 megabits per second to 90% of Australian homes,
schools and businesses WITHIN eight years through fibre-optic cables. The other 10% would get a wireless upgrade"

The new speeds are 100 times faster than most Australians get and would be enough to allow multiple, simultaneous,
high-quality downloads of movies or television SHOWS from the same connection.
A handful of countries including South Korea, Japan, France and Germany have comparable speeds, though not on such a LARGE scale.

Installing fibre cables across most of AUSTRALIA would create 25,000 jobs a year during construction, the government said.

For those who don't know, fibre optic internet provides data transfers at the speed of LIGHT and can handle 40gb/s of data on a single line.

This would allow a 700mb movie to download in just 23seconds at 30mb/s (assuming the server your downloading from has fibre optics)

Cool

Congrats to the Aussies

Solve : Windows 7 stuck trying to "Identify Network"?

Answer»

For some reason, Windows 7 refuses to connect to the internet. It SAYS it connected to the Network, but says there is "No Internet access." Most of the time it gets stuck in this loop saying "Identifying Network."

My MacBook Pro has no issues with the internet, and my Roommates Vista laptop seems to handle it just as well. SO why does Windows 7 not want to cooperate? I tried disabling the antivirus and Firewall to no success.

Note: this machine use to be able to connect with no problem. Are you able to ping the router/gateway successfully?I'm not sure how I would ping the router. This is the SCHOOLS network, and they use a hidden domain...Quote from: Griff on October 07, 2009, 02:58:49 PM

I assumed you are on a simple home network, but since you are at a school I'll gracefully bow out because I'm not a super network-savvy person..ya... neither am I... sigh...

Thats the one thing that's preventing my from GETTING a A+ certification. Open a command prompt [Start / run / type cmd] At the command prompt type ipconfig / all. What are the numbers you GET?

Solve : Problem networking two computers?

Solve : VPN Issue?

I work at an ISP and we offer IPTV and one of the ladies up at the front desk does all the tv configurations and all. Well she uses a vpn to connect to the OFFICE that has all of our tv servers and when she connects and does what she has to do then disconnects...CONSTANTLY after that the vpn connection always wants to connect. At first I thought it was only when she would do something on the internet but it seems to HAPPEN randomly. Whenever she tries to open Internet Explorer the vpn connects in...doesn't show her username/password or anything. I have checked all the connections options in internet option and made sure it was set to never dial a connection...all of that is right. I thought it might be internet explorer having something to do with it but it does it in GOOGLE chrome and firefox. I have tired everything I can think of and can't find where or why the vpn always wants to connect in.

Go to support.dell.com choose the by serial # This will give u all the spec's and driver for your LT. Download the driver for wireless LT. Write back & let us know. Thanks for the info, i downloaded the latest driver but it MADE no difference. Any other suggestions?

Solve : How can the Power Mac G4 of 2000 have gigabit ethernet while a 2009 PC lacks it?

Answer»

The Apple Power Mac G4 was the FIRST personal desktop computer to feature gigabit ethernet while the DELL Inspiron models 5xx still lack gigabit even though the making of both these computers are nine years apart.
This Mac of 2000 can handle

without a external card while

needs a external PCI card for gigabit.

PCs from 2000 only had 10/100 LAN. More expensive PCs from 2004 and later have gigabit as standard. PCs from 2007 and later should use Gigabit. so basiclly, I was ripped off.
That Mac from 2000 was a high end model. This Dell PC was a low end model, also.
Why?Because Apple thinks in the Future, while Win PC think about price. Window PC makers think in terms of price. By holding the price down U have very little if any choice in building more advance hardware. While Apple granted might be more expensive. They tend to be more progressive in hardware. I have always stated this:
Lets face it if u look only at price between a $500. sys vs a $1000. sys. Most users would buy the $500. I always say look under the hood. Buy far I think u get more bang for your bucks with a MAC then a Window PC.
This posting by neelchauhan is a good example of my theory. midsail,

I what to disagree with you, contradict you, because that is my nature. But it is too hard to do because you are so right on.

So, I will just add this sarcasm I use whenever this Apple vs PC thing comes up.

"The Apple computer WORKS so well it is no fun for man who needs to fix things. " -Old Geek saying.

Solve : Should I use powerline networking??

I have a lab downstairs and I want to connect it to the Internet without a 100ft Cat5e cable. I want to use the Belkin Gigabit powerline kit because I will use gigabit. Should I use this or I should always use a 100ft cable from the router to the Ethernet hub.I this the product your mean?

Reviews on this and products like it are MIXED.

They, the manufacturers, can not say for sue that you will have good results in all cases. In depends on the building construction.

I think this is a case that if you can put in cable, do it.Any walls or floors in between the computer and the WIRELESS router will affect signal strength, as well as services running through those walls and floors.

As the angle from the router changes the effective wall/floor thickness will also change. A six inch thick wall at a 45 degree angle is the equivelent of nine inches.

Wireless will not make full use of Gigabit anyway. You really need a cable to get the full benefit. If you really want to go wireless then try it, if you aren't happy try with the cable.hey, wouldn't a 6-inch wall at a 45 degree angle be 8.48 inches? Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 15, 2009, 10:49:34 PM

hey, wouldn't a 6-inch wall at a 45 degree angle be 8.48 inches?

No, it's 9". You multiply by 1.5.that doesn't make any sense- it creates a right angle triangle, 6 inches deep. since it's a right angle triangle then the other side is also 6 inches thus we use the pyhtagorean theorem sqr(6^2+6^2)= Sqr(72)=(8.48")That would actually be the wrong math for that. Calculate it the way you would for a radiation shield. You multiply it by it's factor at 45 degrees, or one half of vertical. Actually the calculation for armor works the same way.that doesn't make any sense. it's still a triangle.I know, but it is different. Don't ask me how, I'm a wee bit high, but it is definately a 1.5 multiplier.

To test this take a piece of wood or steel, measure it at the vertical, then put it on a 45 degree incline, measure it again.Quote from: Geek-9pm on August 14, 2009, 08:59:45 AM

Once in place, the fiber cable gives the highest performance. For a serious commercial research lab, the cost can be justified over time.

Commercial hubs can piggy back with a small loss in performance. The issue is frequent collisions when several users are active at the same time. A switch would be preferred to a hub in most cases.

Solve : Internet is very slow?

Answer»

Is anyone having problems with the Internet being very slow lately?
It keeps saying stuff like "please wait..."
and just like taking a very long time for some REASON for things to come up on the pages/sites.
So you think it's a worldwide problem?
What you want to know is if other people on your node with your ISP are having a similar issue. You should contact your ISP and let them know you're experiencing this problem.I am in a chatroom with them at the moment, and nobody else is having the problem. They give me a link http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB401526with so many things to do, guess I'll have to wait for someone around to do some of these things as it involves physical things I can't do with unhooking things.
Only other thing too is on my mom's computer, we can't shut it down anymore. Haven't been able to shut it down for years due to this blue screen she gets. Haven't found any repairmen who is able to fix the problems.1) On YOUR computer, have you run full scans with your AV AND with Malware Bytes?
2) On your MOM's computer - WHAT blue screen?Do you use a router? What browser are you using? I don't know of any browser that says please wait. Is your gaming slow or your browsing?

Do a speed test http://www.speedtest.net/What type of connection do you have with your ISP (ATT) ?
o DSL (which plan?)
o Wi-Fi
o DialupYes, I run AV and the other scans all the time. We have it set to auto run them everyday in the middle of night. Reason for that is whenever doing a scan, you can't use any other programs because of all the memory it takes and stuff to do the scans.
Due to all my disabilities and being home all the time, I need something to help get my mind off not feeling well and all. So, I love chatting, computer games, surfing the net, so many other things too I like being able to do.

About the blue screen on my mom's computer, everytime she tries to shut it down, it goes to this screen and wont let her shut it down and says this: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
1. Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.
2. Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced start up options and then select safe mode.

She doesn't know how to do any of what it says to do above. So, is why she has repairmen try to do it, but so far, haven't found one who is able to fix the problem either.

Not sure if we did the speedtest thing right. One of the things said something about downloading it for your iphone. We don't even have an iphone. Also, it has this map, but doesn't have where we are. The closest to us is Tallahassee, FL which is about a 3-4 hour drive out East to where we are. Here is what it did say in this little box though, if this is correct, it said
Download speed
Mp3 File (5 MB) 14 sec
Video Clip (35 MB) 2 min
Movie (800 MB) 35 min
Then also had some other thing that said 3.05 Mb/s

Then Upload Speed
E-mail attachment (1 MB) 25 sec
Photo Gallery (8 MB) 3 min
Video Clip (35 MB) 15 min
and same here another thing similar to download speed that said 0.32 MB/s

Ping 56 ms

Yes, we have had a router ever since we switched from dialup internet to Bellsouth/AT&T DSL. Not sure exactly the plan, we have, but it's not the lowest one. We have one of the higher ones, but not the highest.
It's hooked on my computer which is in the spare bedroom and goes through the attic and out to my mom's computer which is in the Garage. Without the router she wouldn't be able to use the Internet.
It maybe RUNNING a little better though since one of the things it said on the site to try, shutting down the modem/router. So, I did try that. Yes, it says Please wait and then has those 3 little dots/periods after it, while just trying to go to different websites is when it says Please wait...
On my mom's computer I use MOZILLA, mine I use IE ever since we had to get rid of Mozilla due to problems it kept having with distorting everything everytime we try and use it on my computer.

The other thing too is it seems we just have so many problems with everything not working right around our house for some reason. For the past 20 years or so, we keep getting this annoying interference that comes through everything when it's happening- the tv, phone, radio/stereo, computer. It sounds like someone is snoring. Nobody has been able to figure out what is causing it.
Also, ever since Hurricane Ivan, my mom's cellphone(she doesn't have the internet on it), and even other people who come over too their cellphones don't work right. But we know it's not a problem with the cellphone because it works just fine in other places.
Then the other thing too, we keep wondering if maybe there really is a problem and Bellsouth/AT&T just doesn't want to admit they have a problem, and we keep learning too that even though maybe other people are having a problem, they don't seem to call and report it. Keep having problems with our cable not working right alot of times, and when we call Mediacom, they claim nobody else is having the problems, but then we talk to our neighbors and others and they are having the problems too.

For your mothers computer: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313050Just happened again, so I did a SCREENSHOT of the Please wait.

[attachment deleted by admin]for the interference and considering hurricane ivan i would not doubt some corrosion on maybe a grounding wire somewhere along the way the same with the slow internet water can do alot of damage to things that people may not see especially salt water if you live near the ocean. The interference problem sounds like something isn't grounded right somewhere it COULD be at your house the cellphone tower where you live and also maybe the powerlines are not grounded or faulty somewhere in the grid. If there is an antenna not properly grounded or overpowered that noise that you are hearing can happen.Several reasons why the slow internet wouldn't be due to the hurricane is because the slow internet just started happening, also, we aren't even using a phone line for the internet. We don't use cellphones, iphones, mobile phones any of those for the Internet.
We have DSL which doesn't even use the phone lines at all.
The interference has been going on for over 20 years, way before Ivan even hit. So, wouldn't be that. We aren't even near the ocean though.

Solve : Internet only works in the Evening?

Answer»

Ok this one is strange. My Internet was worked fine until it suddenly stopped at around 5 pm. I called my ISP and they tried to help me but nothing worked and suggested I get a new modem. At 8 pm the Internet came back online on its own with a strong connection.

I got the new modem and set it up but the Internet still does not work. I called my ISP again and they tried to help, but again no luck. Then at 8pm the Internet came back online on its own.

Today I called my ISP and told them this pattern and they were not sure why it would do that. They told me that no other users in my area have lost connections so its not a service disruption to my area at a CERTAIN time - which would have been my guess.

Later today the Internet came back on at 8 pm again.

Any ideas ? Since you pay for your service, call them back, and ask them to BRING their lazy butts to your place, and check everything thoroughly.I made an appointment for a service tech. to come in Sunday between 1 and 5 pm lol. But was hoping for some ideas as to why, since its such a strange problem. I said what I said, because it looks like there is some physical issue at your place, so when they come, that option will be cleared up.Sounds like maybe some advanced FIREWALL rule...

I have my SON's internet cut off at 8PM and return at 6AM...
This was accomplished by an advanced rule in my firewall...

Solve : I can not access a website?

Answer»

I can not access a website that I have used before. It requires a password and I have always used IE. Now after I log in I can reach the first page, but I can't go any further. I have Windows Vista and my internet connection is wireless. I have deleted all cookies and temp files, reset IE, updated everything and I have tried using Firefox, Safari and Google Chrome. It SEEMS like it freezes and if I leave it like that for awhile it finally says that there is an internet problem. I called the company and they said it had nothing to do with their site because it worked for them. There is also another site that when I try to even open that one, I NEVER get anything. I am at my wits end and I can not FIGURE out what is wrong.

Here is the error message I am getting:
This webpage is not available.

The webpage at https://www.usacmd.com/invoice/polist.asp?Action=New might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web ADDRESS.

More information on this error

I have used this site many times before, I have to enter invoices and about a week ago it starting doing this.

My laptop sees the network fine. I have started his laptop in safe mode with networking and it sees the wireless network and it will connect. We may have to call Dell, but I was trying not to. Any ideas?
Thanks,Can you connect to any other networks or can it find no networks at all??I could connect to a wired network.
I called Dell and I gave them remote access. They uninstalled their wireless connection software.
After that it saw the wireless networks and I could connect. So it's solved then? YES, problem solved.

Solve : accessing a router with a laptop?

Answer»

I have a ? I am using a verizon usb 760 and I am using it on a laptop. I want to use a linksys 310n off the eithernet port on the side of the laptop. How do I access the router this way. I want to flash the 310 with dd-wrt software so I can use the router as a repeater. The laptop is a vista, any help on this......thanks...two-dogs Today's router r web based. U might have to type a IP ADDRESS something like 192.168.x.x. then a admin user/password. If u do not know what IP address or the password. Check out the manufacture web site and follow the instructions. What I need to know is how do I access the router, I typed in the 192.168.0.1 but nothing happened. I have the connection shared. I have the eithernet cable hooked up to a lan, but no luck. Is there anything else I need to do.........thanks for your help...........two-dogs Can you ping the router?

What error message specifically do you get?

Do you still have the original firmware on the router? Or did you install DD-WRT or something like that?

Not sure if I read yr post correctly, when i first read.
U have the USB modem from Verizon, that u r using for internet connection. U have Ethernet cable connect from the Laptop (LT) to the router?
Not sure if u can connect this way, u might try a crossover cable between the LT and router. Make sure just for peace of mind u r connecting it to the port that states something like modem.
Also check the setting and compare them on the router and the LT.
Usually the modem connectes to the router, then the Node. The router give the gateway and submask information and assigns a IP Address to the other Nodes. Since u r getting the DNS IP Address, gateway and submask from the USB modem. U might want to ENTER this setting into the router. write back and let us know. Sorry guys I went back and read my post I can see why you were confused. Here is the deal I have a Network setup using a mbr 1000 cradlepoint and the modem plugged into it. Now what I wanted to do is use my 310n as a repeater to be able to hook up my IP device in another room and share the connection from my cradlepoint. Now I have flashed the 310n with the dd-wrt.v24_mini_generic.bin software that I downloaded from there site, and read on how to run as a repeater but for some reason it doesn't WORK. If you have or know someone that has DONE this procedure, I sure could use some help.......thanks.....two-dogs

Solve : Set up Web and eMail server using Windows Vista?

Answer»

I am making a Web and eMail server and the OS is WINDOWS Vista.
I use the XAMPP Lite package since it is light and it can easily be archived. My eMail uses the Baby POP3 server for POP3 and the Free SMTP Server for STMP. I read the Windows EULA and it said something similar to "Maximum 10 connections at once using the Windows Networking services" It said nothing about non-Windows services.
Is there any problems with these softwares?Do you realise the security issues with using your computer as a server? Is this your primary computer?Yes, I realize the security issues. I also have anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall software on my PC. This is on my primary computer but I will INSTEAD build a computer for the tasks I WOULD do on the Primary PC or I would work on my secondary PC.Okay good. Just wanted to make sure you knew what you were getting into. I haven't done it myself, however, but I do know there are security risks.

Do you use a hardware firewall? What type of Internet connection do you use?Just wanted to point out that some ISP's don't like it when people RUN servers on personal internet connections. I have Verizon and I believe it said in the TOS that they frown upon connecting servers to home internet connections. Just thought I'd point that out.You can buy web SPACE very, very cheap noway.s

Yes, for a fee. They redirect the user to a backup server. If you don't get your server on LINE right away they will charge you for bandwidth.

I recommend you reeading the POST here:
http://1mum.geek-tools.org/2009/07/12/server-uptime-info/

Can ANYBODY explain to me how to do this.
Swhat OS are you running?

Windows, Linux, Mac?
Windows on Pc and Laptop. Using a wireles broadband connection on home PC. So it acquires the ip address using nat. you could always use Remote Desktop Connection to access your desktop from your Laptop. You would need to make sure if you have a router that it allows port 3389 through. You would also need to make sure that your desktop is SET to allow MSTSC connections.

Right click on my computer and select properties
click on the remote tab
and select Allow users to connect remotely to the computer.

i reformat my laptop Acer Aspire 4310 because of some errors, im running with windows XP professional SP2 but i can't install this network adapter...

What did you use to restore the OPERATING system; a recovery partition on hard drive, a recovery disc from laptop manufacturer, or a retail Windows XP install CD ?i use the retail windows XP cd installer to restore my operating systemYou need to download and install the motherboard drivers for Acer Aspire 4310 notebook (and Microsoft Windows XP Professional x32) from the Acer website. Install "chipset" first, then any built-in peripherals.

For "United States" , start here.

Or pick your country from within http://www.acer.com, select "Go" button at bottom of web page, select equivalent of "Service & Support" from navigation menu at top, then select one of the "Driver Download" links.

Once on first page of "Driver Download" navigation sequence, select:
o Notebook
o Aspire
o Aspire 4310
and then confirm the selection sequence.

Then select "Microsoft Windows XP Professional x32" as your operating system.

Look for category "Chipset". Assuming you have Intel chipset, the LATEST "Chipset Driver" listed is version "8.2.0.1012".

Look for category "Wireless LAN". Notice there are three different vendors listed. Pick the vendor installed within your laptop. For "Broadcom", the latest "Wireless LAN Driver" listed is version "4.102.15.61".

Now look for and download drivers for all other devices built-in to your motherboard.

Remember, install the "chipset" drivers first, then the others. Thanks a lot for all of you here... i already do it before and i try it again now, here is the error i encountered everytime i try it.

Solve : Linksys online configuration window not coming up?

Answer»

I have wireless internet and it quit today so I went online and entered the IP address in the browser on my hardwired computer to bring up the configuration window like i have done before, but it no longer brings up the window. Anyone know whats going on here? The IP_Address you enter to access the configuration pages of your wireless home router is not on the internet. It's accessing the firmware and/or memory within the home router. It uses a web page interface over either http or https protocol because that's what users are comfortable with and it already handles those protocols.

Start by recycling the power on the home router. Shutdown the computers. Unplug the router, wait a few seconds, PLUG it back in, wait for it to initialize and settle down (about a minute). Now restart your computer and see if you can connect.

If that doesn't work, you may want to reset the router back to factory defaults and then reconfigure everything from scratch. At factory defaults the router configuration page is accessed through a known IP_Address, username, and password. The values for these and the procedures to reset and configure the router should be in USER documentation for router which may be downloaded from internet (or possibly located on CD that came with router?).

When troubleshooting wireless access, it's best to start with no SECURITY until you establish wireless communications and then configure security at both ends of the channel (router and computer).

You think there may be a security problem?

I've got no idea. For your wireless network, you should use the highest security mode common to all computers (or nodes) that need to use it. This should not be "none" or "WEP". It should be "WPA", "WPA2" or some variant thereof; preferably the newest mode available (at least WPA2 ?).

Solve : Multiple login attempts?

Answer»

Hi there,

Recently I've found that whenever I type in login name and password to login to various websites (includes email, this forum, outlook, banks etc), i have to type multiple times to get in (if i can get in at all).

There is no error saying my username or pwd is wrong, it just refreshes my screen to the login page. So is there a virus or something like that on my computer? Is someone trying to steal my pwds? What's wrong?

I'm just a bit concerned. I've ran Mcafee, spybot, malwarebytes, nothing comes up, so i think my computer is clean?

thanksIf u have updated the SW and RESCANNED? If u have done this and still get the same results? Try this GO START>Control Panel>Admin Tools>Event Viewer. Select the following one at a time Application, Security, System and ANTI virus. If u see any big red X or yellow waring sign. This will give u a good starting point to trouble shoot. As a starting point, delete all cookies and empty your temporary internet files. You can also use ccleaner to delete your index.dat file. Then reboot and see if the problem continues.

If it does continue, see if you have the same problem with a different browser.Quote from: midsail on October 01, 2009, 07:22:56 AM

There are many "red crosses" and "yellow warning signs" in APPLICATION and SYSTEM. What does that MEAN? How do I fix it?

And yes, i've cleared the cookies etc many times. And internet explorer is even worse (I use mozilla firefox). When I type in username and passwords, it just loads a blank page with nothing on it.

Would it be hard to fix? Would just formatting my computer be easier?

thanksR u able to post one from the application and System? What I am suspecting is at sometime u got some malware/spyware SW. Write BACK and show the post. i'm just going to format my computer and reinstall windows. Just can't be bothered fixing it since i've got other minor problems on my computer which is bugging me.

But i have spybot and malwarebytes and macafee. They all return clean results for my computer though. Will spay/malware still get through?

One important question, does spy/malware allow the stealing of passwords?

Solve : Want to go Wireless?

Answer»

I have a Sony Vaio PCG F490 laptop. I have a Netgear Wireless Router 802.11g system. I can get on the internet on this computer by using a PC card with an ethernet cable plugged into it. I want to be able to on the internet 'wireless' so that I can use it in a room without the ethernet cable.get

I tried talking to a Netgear customer SERVICE person but he could not speak English good enough for me to understand him.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, bjhWhat happens when you try to connect to the router wirelessly?

Do you receive any kind of connection messages or errors?Error messages Server Not Found and Problem Loading page are shown on the screem when I try to get on the internet without using an ethernet cable connected to the PC card. Yesterday I bought a Netgear 108Mbps Wireless PC Card # WG511T hoping that would solve the problem but it didn't help.

I did a Google.com search on my problem and I am going to try a suggestion I found. I am sure that it is 'Operator Error' so I will keep trying various tips.

Thank you for the response, bjhIf you get a fix or solution, come back and let us KNOW -- it helps everyone that way! Doesn't look promising as I just tried the Netgear card again and I tried to follow the instruction I found on Google for configuring a laptop. Problem with the latter is that it tells me to go to setting names that don't show in my Network Connections. Later today or in the morning I will try again as I am always optimistic that something will make it work.

For certain I will post any success that I have.

Thanks, bjh1. Best Help. Home Network, Wireless Network and Computer Networking Made Easy

We're going to need more INFORMATION, unless you have "specific" questions.

2. General Tip(s). Get the "wireless" communication working without "security" and then decide which scheme you will use to secure the channel.

You configure the wireless router first and then the laptop to match its settings.

All computers communicating through the "wireless access point" of the router must be using the same channel number (frequency range), Service Set Identifier (SSID), security mode (NONE, WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc.), and security encryption key and/or passphrase. The laptop adapter also needs to support the wireless communication standard the router is built for and configured to accept: e.g. 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, or 802.11b/802.11g.

Use the vendor provided documentation to guide you through the process. If necessary, download the required user documentation from vendor's website. Look for "Download and/or Support" links and search on vendor model number.

3. Wireless Router. What is the Make, Model Number, and Version of the router (probably located on sticker on bottom of router).

4. Laptop Adapter(s). I see that you purchased a Netgear 108Mbps Wireless PC Card # WG511T. Does the laptop also have a built-in wireless adapter? To configure the laptop side of the interface, I believe you use either the vendor supplied configuration utility or the Microsoft Wireless Zero Configuration utility. Look to either Microsoft "Help and Support" off the Windows "START Menu" or the vendor supplied documentation. They want you to successfully use their products. You also need to modify the "Properties" of the wireless connection to setup the security keys and/or passphrases. Should be a "connection" icon for the wireless adapter on Windows. Access through "Start" -> "Control Panel" -> "Network Connections" on Windows XP.

5. Operating System. What operating system and service pack level is the laptop running; e.g. Windows XP Professional SP3?Better Help:

Solve : Aquiring ip address...?

Answer»

i have a home wired and wireless network running off a Netgear DG834GT router. it connects to my pc via a cable and a laptop wireless.. i am having trouble connecting my desktop pc to the network. it has worked for ages and suddenly now hangs at aquiring ip address, the laptop will still connected both wired and wireless.. i have tried connecting the desktop pc wirelessly but it does the exact same thing.. any help would be apprecitated.

thankswas also wondering if there is any way of controlling the amount each computer on the network downloads. i think this may be hard because the computers all connect directly to the router but if there is any way it can be DONE i would like to1. Desktop Computer. Connect the desktop via "wire" to router. From a command window execute "ipconfig /all" command and post back with the results.

a. To access command window from Windows XP TRY "Start" -> "Run" -> enter "cmd" or "command" without quotes in text box and hit Enter key.

b. Within command window enter "ipconfig /all > %systemdrive%\hope.txt" without quotes.

c. Use notepad editor to cut and paste contents of "hope.txt" to this thread. I believe variable %systemdrive% maps to logical drive containing Windows operating system; e.g "c:"

2. Controlling Downloads. I have no answer for this.i cannot get onto my pc ryt now as i am having hard drive problems but will get back as soon as possible.. i have done this and got 0.0.0.0 for both the ip and default gateway and blanks for the rest. but i will do it again asap and post results0.0.0.1When we right click the local internet connection at the bottom right, there is repair option that will repair and make the connection.

I have had the same problem several times and the repair option always works.

Software that hides your IP can cause the no connection problem but repair will put you back on track.

Good Luckthanks.. i tried the repair numerous times and it come up with an error straight away saying that it couldnt refresh the ip adress or sumfin.. i no the ip adress of my router and the computers that use it are each reserved ip adresses so i enterd those as my ip adress and default gateway and got a connection with limited or no connectivity and no internet. at one stage i could ping google from cmd but couldnt access it from internet explorer or firefox1. It would probably be faster to have you read what Microsoft has to say on the subject:
Troubleshooting network connection problems

Setting up your network
Securing your network
Using and maintaining your network

2. Or you could provide the requested "ipconfig /all" output. We don't know what your current configuration is (and it seems to be CHANGING all the time).

3. Safe Mode with Networking. It's a long SHOT, but if you're running Windows XP does it connect after booting to "Safe Mode with Networking"?i cant now coz i cant get the rest of my pc to work...sigh but as soon as i can ill do ipconfig and tell u WAT it says
thanks

Solve : DSL Speed problem?

Answer»

I have several computers on a home network, all computers get download / upload speeds reasonably close to advertised speed. One of my kids computers has a wireless connection and gets horrible download speed, and close to advertised upload speed. I have NORTON antivirus, and have ran spybot search and destroy, they both catch no problems.

I have Windstream DSL service advertised at 12Mbps (down) and 768Kbps (up)

on the problem computer i get about 350Kbps (down) and 630Kbps (up)

other computers I get 11.45Mbps (down) and 630Kbps (up)

I can't figure out what is causing the slow download speed. Tomorrow I am going to hardwire the connection and see what happens.

let me know if you have any ideas what is causing this.Quote from: cchazer on September 19, 2009, 09:52:28 PM

Tomorrow I am going to hardwire the connection and see what happens.

Since you didn't explicitly say, I've got to ask:
(1) Did you test the problem computer in close proximity (within six to ten feet) of the wireless access point (home router?) with clear horizontal line of sight?
(2) If they both have external antennas, are they all pointing straight up ?Yes, right next to the router, both antenna's pointint up. Also, this computer never used to be this slow, it's one of the kids computers, thats why I was thinking it was probably a spyware problem.1. Netstat. Use the "netstat" utility to see how many errors and/or retransmits you've had to and/or from that computer. I believe the statistics are accumulated from the last "boot" (so a reboot allows you to start fresh).

From a command prompt window try:
a. netstat -e
b netstat -e -s |more

or to save the output, redirect to text file on root of "Windows" drive letter:
c. netstat -e > %systemdrive%\netstat_e.txt
d. netstat -e -s > %systemdrive%\netstat_e_s.txt

or for command syntax and usage INFORMATION:
e. netstat /?

2. Safe Mode with Networking. If Windows XP machine, boot to "Safe Mode with Networking" and check the download / upload throughputs. Note: In Safe Mode, most if not all of your security SOFTWARE, will not be running.

3. Malware. If you really think it might be "malware" see Read this before requesting malware removal help and post to the "Computer Viruses and Spyware" forum.

4. Computer Specs.
a. From "System Properties" windows (General tab):
(1) Operating system and service pack level (e.g. Windows XP Home Edition SP3)
(2) CPU type, clock rate, amount of system RAM

b. Wireless Adapter
(1) Make and model number (if known)
(2) Which standard does it support (802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n)?

5. Hard Drive. (Yeah, I know I'm reaching...)
a. Approximate total capacity (GigaBytes)
b. How much "Free" space (GigaBytes)
c. Space allocated to "swap file" (aka paging file).
d. When was the last time you checked the drive for errors (file system and disk surface)?
e. When was the last time you "defragged" the file system?

6. Process EXPLORER. Download, unzip, and run Process Explorer. It's from www.sysinternals.com which was bought by Microsoft couple of years ago. For now, use it to verify CPU usage. Is the "Idle" process value low (meaning computer could use more processing power).

Do u have any P2P SW (for Example Limeware or any program for download music, video) install?
Open a command prompt, Go Start>Run and type "ipconf /all" without the quotation marks. This will tell us a lot. If u have any that looks like Automatic Tunneling Pseudo interface. U have some kind of P2P SW running in the background. Also not sure if Comcast is still doing this or not, but there was a time when they were managing network traffic.
The other option is time consuming and it MIGHT help is to see what service is causing this problem.
Go to>Start>Run and type "msconfig" there r 2 tabs that we r interested in Services and Startup.
First lets check Service Tab, U can checked the hide all Microsoft service. This will leave only 3rd party service running. One at a time unchecked a service and reboot, check to see if u r still downloading. Do this until u find the service (if any) that stops the download. If u find one don't stop, write it down and continue until u finish all services. The other Tab Startup pretty MUCH the same, u can leave anything that states C:\Windows\sys32 for last. If u find something write back with a post and we can help u some more. I known this is time consuming, but we need to find the service first before we can trouble shoot.

Solve : need help with a very serious network adapter problem?

Answer»

Hi i need help with my Thompson lan adapter for my computer. Let me start from the TOP. Ok i was messing around with my security SETTINGS with firefox network site that you add your ip to the address bar when i accidently misclicked on the change button from wap to wep. This disconnected my desktop computer and my laptop. soon after i was able to get my laptop to connect but not my desktop. so from the laptop i changed the security setting back to what it was(WAP) but now neither of my adapters are picking up any sign of a modem on my desktop. I am not sure if i had changed any setting for my adapters from the firfox settings. I was wandering can anyone at all help me with this problem. I really need someone who knows aloth about adapters and can help me or anyone for the matter.

Thanks you guys get back to me asap.1. What operating system and service pack level are the computer and laptop using (e.g. Windows XP Home Edition SP3, Windows XP Professional SP3)?

2. Wireless Access Point. It sounds like both your computer and laptop use "wireless" to connect to your network. What network hardware component is the wireless access point in (wireless modem, wireless home router, separate wireless access point)?

3. Provide Make, Model Number, (and Version if there is one) of the wireless access point above (e.g. LinkSys WRT54G v5)?

4. Provide Make and Model Number of the wireless network interface cards in both the computer and laptop, if known?

5. Does either the computer or laptop have a "wired" network interface card that can be connected to a "wired" port on whatever you're using as a wireless access point?

6. If you've enabled "security" (encryption) at the wireless access point, each wireless host computer communicating with the access point must match the security scheme it's using. Hopefully, you can use a computer with a "wired' connection to access the access point's configuration pages using its web interface. You are not accessing the internet to make these changes. You are accessing the firmware of the access point which has been programmed to communicate in a web page format (because that's what people feel comfortable with).

With the make, model number, and version of the wireless access point; someone should be able to pull USER documentation off the internet to see what the proper configuration procedure is.Do u have any P2P SW (for Example Limeware or any program for download music, video) install?

Solve : Computer HAS the connection, does not connect to broadband connection????

Answer»

This problem is very complicated, because I have called Tech Support and I have also talked to a friend that is fairly good with computers.

My HP Pavilion dv6 laptop uses Vista. I have a internet connection shown at the bottom right with the animation. I am able to use Ventrilo, so I KNOW it is there. But when I try to use the internet it asks me if I want to connect or stay offline, i CHOOSE connect. It then trys to connect and brings up an error 815. I have tried pressing alt while in the internet BROWSER and turning off "Work Offline" and reopening, that didnt work. I tried changing my DSL servers to ones that i got from my friends computer, those didnt work either. I tried disabling my Internet Protocal Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) option in the settings for this connection, that didnt work either. Before my computer was able to browse the internet, but it would sometimes do this process where it would try to connect, i press cancel, i go to another website, it says to Connect or Work Offline, i press Connect and thats it, it works. Now it goes through the process of trying to connect when i press the Connect option.

Please help! haha, i have an assignment i have to do thats due tomorrow and I need my computer to do it. Hopefully someone can help me out more than the Tech Support did...

Thanks guys!Quote from: da3491 on September 20, 2009, 02:29:51 PM

Before what?
And have you tried other browsers? Before this issue came up i mean, and that was yesterday. I cant try another browser because i cant go on the internet to download one lol.You can download one on another computer and install it on yours then try it.

And did anything happen between the last time you could connect to the internet and the first time you couldn't (new hw, sw, virus, etc)?I dont have any WAY to GET another browser, i dont have a thumb drive or anything. And i didnt do anything, just put my laptop to sleep. The Tech Support guy told me that the IP address changes and i have to get the new one from the ISP, but that doesnt make sense to me...are you even able to change your IP address?

i'm moving from home and i only LIVE about a mile and a half from my PARENTS' house now. instead of setting up a new, expensive internet account, is there a card or device i can buy that will help me continue to read my parents' internet connection? i have a wireless router of my own and i'm wireless in their house. is there SOMETHING i can do or will i need to set up a whole new internet connection?

thanx in advance! For Commercial users there are devices that extend the wireless range. But they cost a lot and require special installation. So you don't save money. No, you're not going to be able to "reach" or "find" your parent's signal (but you might be able to meet your neighbors). It's too far away and there are too many other networks using the same "channel" between you and your parents.

Some interesting reading: Jeff Duntemann's Wardriving FAQ. Please note, it's dated "April 26, 2003"; laws change.I just read that FAQ and saw WARDIALING. I think I accidentally dialed someone's modem lol. You cannot. You will need to set up a expensive internet connection or you can use a free basic dial up connection which I will try today if it is stable at http://www.dialupforfree.com/gettingstarted.html or http://www.metconnect.com/ if you don't want to pay.I don't know what happened. I mis-dialed a number and it sounded like my mom's modem (I think) on her old computer.

Solve : Internet not working with wireless router?

Answer»

Hiya!

Problem
I've recently bought a new modem (ADSL2+, NETGEAR DM111P v2) since my old one got pwned by a thunderstorm. Anyhow, with the old one I had it plugged with a wireless router (3com officeconnect wireless 108Mbps 11g Cable/DSL Router, 3CRWER200-75) in order to connect with my laptop ETC thru wireless. Worked like a charm.

However now that I bought a new one, I tried to plug it the exact same way that I did with the old one but it just won't work. The modem works flawlessly without the router in between but as soon as I plug that in it won't work.

What I've tried
I've tried RESETTING both the modem and the router, putting basic SETTINGS so that the router is DHCP server etc. and that the modem is not. Yesterday it worked for 1 second but then broke down again. I've just downloaded a new firmware for the router and I'm GOING to update it and see what happens!

Please help me,
Sebastian*bump*

Latest firmware did not work, but downloaded an older version and it seems to have fixed my problem!

What was the "issue" with your xbox?

When you go to Linksys SITE, you'll need to provide a "valid" model and version number to access the relevent documentation for your router.

General information: Connect an Xbox or Xbox 360 to your network.

Maybe select "Setting-Up Servers Behind a Linksys Router" link left side of this web page: Welcome to Ask Linksys.

Keeping in mind that I've never done this, the following Linksys forum posts might also get you closer to your goal. I don't know whether you want/need to select "Single Port Forwarding", "Port Range Forwarding", or "Port Range Triggering".

1. What is the issue with your xbox? Do you need ports open for online gaming? Which game?

2. Model Number. There is no Linksys WRT546.

3. For background information see Port forwarding and possibly Port triggering.

4. The following links show examples of port forwarding configured from the "Applications & Gaming" tab of the home router's configuration address:
Setting Up Port Range Forwarding for Routers and Gateways
Setting-Up Servers Behind a Router

Quote
Port Range Forward:

Certain applications may require to open specific ports in order for it to function correctly. Examples of these applications include servers and certain online games. When a request for a certain port comes in from the Internet, the router will route the data to the computer you specify. Due to security concerns, you may want to limit port forwarding to only those ports you are using, and uncheck the Enable checkbox after you are finished.

The Port Range Forwarding screen sets up public services on your network, such as web servers, ftp servers, e-mail servers, or other specialized Internet applications. (Specialized Internet applications are any applications that use Internet access to perform functions such as videoconferencing or online gaming. Some Internet applications may not require any forwarding.)

When users send this type of request to your network via the Internet, the Router will forward those requests to the appropriate PC. Any PC WHOSE port is being forwarded must have its DHCP client function disabled and must have a new static IP address assigned to it because its IP address may change when using the DHCP function.

---------------------
Customized Applications. Enter the name of the public service or other Internet application in the field provided.

External Port. Enter the numbers of the External Ports (the port numbers seen by users on the Internet).

TCP Protocol. Click this checkbox if the application requires TCP.

UDP Protocol. Click this checkbox if the application requires UDP.

IP Address. Enter the IP Address of the PC running the application.

Enable. Click the Enable checkbox to enable port forwarding for the application.

------------------
Check all the values and click Save Settings to save your settings. Click the Cancel Changes button to cancel your unsaved changes.
Better Example. Can't get any clearer than this. See "Example 2" of Port Forwarding How to.

Solve : Internet suddenly disconnecting?

Answer»

Heya. I recently had to buy a new modem since mine was killed by a lightningstorm. After that the modem worked perfectly, no DISCONNECTIONS or WHATEVER. Then I bought:
a new gfx card
a new motherboard

but the internet seemed to work flawlessly. But this is not the case, the Internet disconnects and gives me unnaturally high latency in games(bearable, but STILL..)

anyone know what the cause might be? My modem is a netgear ADSL2+ Modem and my network adapter is called nforce 10/100/100 Mbps Network controller. Also when I got on the internet the first time on this computer, I had to go to Network Connections --> SETTINGS --> Internet Protocol --> and set a default gate to 192.168.1.1 for it to work and it seems to disconnect when I try to start my torrent PROGRAM (when it gets up to speed on a torrent..)It might not be a modem problem, maybe NIC?, could be anything at this point. Make sure u install the correct drivers, chipset and SW with the new card and MB. BTW does the does the MB has a built in NIC?
When u state "Network Connections --> Settings --> Internet Protocol --> and set a default gate to 192.168.1.1" r u connecting thru a router ? If u r check the router setting.

Open a cmd prompt window and try ping to the ip adders. Write down the answers, try it from another PC and compare.

Solve : switches spliting sig??

Answer»

I have to ask, is it true? lets say i have dsl coming in then to switch( 4 port )then two 2nd switch (4 port) and then to 3 switch (4 port). Now that sig. at 100% going into switch 1 ONE computer(1) is on at that switch and one computer(2) is on at switch 2 and two computer(3 and 4) is on at switch 3. If that sig is 100% into switch 1 does computer1 get 50% and computer 2 get 25% of 50 % and computer 3 and 4 share the REST, if they are all running at same time. wow i am confused First of all, I am not here to insult you. But sometimes I make people very mad. You are very observant and intelligent. Perhaps that is WAY you have chosen not to dig into network documentation.

You assumption in you question does not ...
even quality as a wrong answer.

Because a wrong answerr becomes right when you just change a few words. I can't do that with your hypothesis.

The whole idea of TC/IP and others forms of packet communication allow for many users to share the same network, even when the network seems to be a chaos. Sharing is done by need and priority and other factors to give the best possible speed to active users.

Aside from hardware issues, the convoluted network you describe can give full speed, over 95%, to a single user while the other computers are idle.

Here is a better definition that what I can give:

Calls to mind something I heard on the news.
I gave you a thanks for that!
