Solve : Weird packet loss and high ping?

Answer»

Hey guys, first off, I know a good bit about computers and can usually fix most simple problems without help. But Ive tried all the tricks I know to fix this and I cant. So heres my story.

I play a lot of online games. Recently, first person shooters. I play on the same server all the time, and average a ping of 10-40. Since last night, my ping has been 80+ and Im getting an incredibly annoying skip type of lag. Like one SECOND I will be somewhere and run into a room, then Ill bounce out of the room and be running into the wall, but then a second later Ill be back in the room.

I shut down my PC, unplugged the cable modem and router for 10 mins. I plugged everything back in, and still the same problem. I contacted my ISP (Metrocast), via online chat. The guy did a test and told me I have pretty significant packet loss. I understand what packet loss is, but the guy didnt have anything for me to try and fix it on my own. He suggested I call the customer service LINE and have a tech come out to take a look because it could be something in the lines. Being Saturday night, I know Im likely not going to get anyone out here till the earliest, Monday. Tomorrow is my much anticipated release date of a new MMO called Aion that I will literally be playing all day. Im really hoping this packet loss wont effect that game quit so much.

Anyways, here is a picture of a test I did USING a program I downloaded.

Notice how high all the pings are and the amount of packet loss for them all is averaged around 33%

Is there anything I might be able to do to solve this issue? Any reasons why this might be happening?

To view picture bigger, right click and click View ImageIt could be a DSL phone filter that stopped working or 2 wires are SHORTING. Check your own wires, try unplugging everything from the phone lines except the modem and see if you have packet loss. It could be humidity in your phone line 'box' (that happened to me once when a sprinkler was spraying it)

Solve : Where is this IP coming from??

Answer»

I have over 600 devices in my facility whether it be PC's, Printers, Jetdirect, or vender related. Anyway, Since I can't FIND the physical location of this certain IP address, I was wondering how I can at least find what switch and port it's on by its IP.Your system must have a central Router or Server somewhere. You go into that device and find who is in charge of: DHCP . And there should be a list of everything.
Most likely you have a Domain Server.Hello use the nbtstat with a switch command. FOLLOW the link provided for more information. It will not GIVE the exact PIN point location, but it will get u real close.

Solve : Firefox Stealing The Net?

Answer»

Hey,
I desperately need help with this,
for some unknown reason I can only surf the web through Mozilla Firefox, and nothing else.
E.g. I cant use Internet Explorer, or get cd information with windows media player or use the dreaded itunes.

It all just comes up saying the internet isn't connected.

Does any one have any idea why?You need to provide more information.

Were you ever able to use IE or iTunes or did this just START recently? If it just started, is there anything new with your system (new hw, SW, virus, etc)? Have you run full scans with both your AV and either MalwareBytes or Super AntiSpyware (if not, do so now)? And any other relevant information.Hey,
im downloading malware bytes now,

and i could use to use IE and windows media player with the net, and i GOT itunes a few days ago LONG after the problem started.

and when it started not working, i hadnt installed anything new or downloaded anything in a while.

ill let you KNOW what the virus scan shows up.

Thanks.

Solve : Can't connect to wireless network?

Answer»

I have a wireless network and I'm trying to add my mom's Compaq LAPTOP to it.

When you click on available networks it shows and finds my network but it says: The wireless network requires the use of a Network key (WEP). To access this network, type the key and click CONNECT.

The problem is I don't what goes in the BOX. My router paperwork has an SSID and Passphrase. It won't take either of those. When I put them in it says: The network password needs to be 40 bits or 104 bits depending on your network configuration. This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters.

What's the deal? It keep's saying WEP my papers say my network is WPA/WPA2.

How do I make it connect? It's windows XP by the way.

Thanks!Hmm, I kept working with it and now shows it's connected with an excellent signal strength but it won't load pages. When you open IE it says there's no connection ???I'm confused. Okay so looking around on it I see that the IP address does not match my ISP's IP address.

Then I hooked it up to my broadband connection directly via Ethernet cable and the internet still does not work on it. What could the problem be?

Thanks! If you removed router, reboot modem. May have to reboot computer, too.

Can anyone tell me what does this mean??

Not without the Rosetta STONE. EVEN then, probably not...

Maybe if you provide some "context":
1. What "logfile" (complete path and filename)?
2. What program/process produces the log file?
3. Which operating system and service pack level (e.g. Windows XP Pro SP3)?Hi dahlarbear,

I am developing one DICOM (health care related) application. i am using some third party tool kit to develop the application. The application has to communicate with the server and sends some packets of data and recieves some packets of data from the server. Some times server sends some images to the client.

All the details are stored in the logs. when ever the there is a communication btwn client and server. The problem which i am facing is the network connection gets disconnected btwn client and server. i need to interpret the reasons from the logs, logs contains something like what i have posted...

Well we should start by linking to the rest of your problem description: Regarding Mergecom toolkit using C#

What kind of computers are the "server" and the "client". I think the old HP-UX and Solaris Workstations running Motorola chips and PCs running Intel chips store binary data differently (or was it ASCII?). For a given binary number, the most significant and least significant bytes within the value were reversed between the different CPU chips (or something like that). That's what the LITTLE Endian and Big Endian are about. So obviously if you're transferring data between different CPU chips, you may have to compensate for the disparity.

The defacto tool for examining network packets is the "free" open source Wireshark.

Maybe some info in these google search results.

Solve : Ubuntu Internet connection problems?

Answer»

I have never used Ubuntu before and decided to give it a try. I have an older computer that someone gave me and figured if I MESSED anything up it would be ok. I installed Ubuntu (I made it so I could dual boot with windows 2000) and after the installtion everything looked fine, but I am unable to connect to my internet. I have internet through my cable company. I tried going into windows 2000 and I am unable to get into my internet there as WELL.

Ubuntu knows that I have a networkcard because I ran ifconfig eth0 and it shows up. I know that the ethernet cord works because I am using it right now on my LAPTOP. Also, when I am in windows it shows that I have a connection and packets are being sent, but when I try to open a browser it says I have no connection.

What are SOMETHING that I can do to get the internet to start working again. Is the driver software installed for Ubuntu and Windows2000?

Is this a desktop computer? Many operating systems will detect an ethernet card, but in some cases, the driver software may need to be installed.

I think I found the driver, but to be honest I have no clue how to download it through Ubuntu. I tried reading the installation instructions, but none of it worked.

I have the drivers for Windows so I do not know why it is not working there too. What version of Ubuntu? Just curious...9.04 DesktopUse THIS set of instructions, and see what's in the /etc/network/interfaces file.I am in root and type /etc/network/interfaces and it gives bash: /etc/network/interfaces: Permission deniedOK, typing that attempts to run the file. We need to read and edit the file. Read it first. Try the COMMAND:

cat /etc/network/interfacesOk I did that and it comes up with

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

I guess that means it is not saying that my eth0 is avalible. The link did not say what to do it something was not listed.

btw thank you very much for your help.

You're welcome.

I'm not as knowledgeable as I'd like to be, but we'll take it a step at a time.

Hello there.

I am following a guide to create a static lan IP address.

I am using a BT Home hub 2.0, and have been searching in the manager for these, with no luck.

I found a website which lists DNS server names, but i was trying to make sure if this is correct.

Solve : internet drops out?

Answer»

hello I have a 2wire modem DSL from there to a switch 5port, cat5 cable to basement other to switch in living room and from that switch to another switch in office. All this was working FINE,now i drop my internet connection all the time,it will be good for a few minutes that drop, reconnect than drop if i unplug cat5 cable from modem and plug in laptop to modem it is fine could it be a bad switch or cable doing this?Quite likely.

You've taken a good first step, by connecting directly from the DSL modem to a computer. This tells you it's not the SERVICE itself. Cables are probably the easiest to check.Hello
Work yr way back. from the last switch to the first switch. Each step check the connection. It might be a bad CAT 5 between switches. Also u might WANT to change to Cat 5E. Write back and lets us know.thanks found it (bad switch ) it was the 1st switch all cat5 cable ok.
what do i have to gain by GOING from cat5 to cat5e? If u don't have to replace that much cable it might be worth the difference for a few more cents. Or u can install the CAT5E has u add more /replace the cable and hardware. Considering the push for gig networks (hardware like switches, routers) follow the link on this excellent article between the differences. In the future we will definitely see more gig hardware and less base 100 hardware.

Solve : trouble connecting to internet via certain programs?

Answer»

Hi,
I’ve starting having trouble connecting to the internet with certain programs in the PAST few days. My normal internet connection works fine - browsers, downloading, updating programs such as antivirus or spyware programs and other basic stuff. But when it comes to programs such as torrents, Battle.net or some of my instant messaging programs (icq, qip, miranda...), I always get the same error after WAITING dozens of seconds to connect: "unable to establish connection; timed out" etc. I don’t get it! Why is my browser (be it Mozilla, Opera or IE) working perfectly, but I can’t seem to connect to the internet through other MEANS? Am I missing something? It really came out of the blue. One day everything worked and now it doesn’t. I’ve tried searching for viruses and spyware and malware and that sort of stuff, but my computer seems to be clean and RUNS perfectly apart from the connection problem. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? Thank you for any help you can give me. If u have a FIREWALL, check yr setting.Quote from: midsail on September 24, 2009, 04:23:27 PM

If u have a firewall, check yr setting.
I tried turning it on and off again, adding exceptions, but nothing worked. No change. Although, I solved the instant messaging problem. It turned out that my assigned ports for logging in simply stopped working (God knows why), so all I had to do was change them.

Solve : 2 Computers, 1 internet connection.?

Answer»

Okay here's the PROBLEM:

I have to computers, one upstairs, one down. These computers both have a connection to my wireless N D-Link roughter. And they both still connect to the router (I can change the routers settings, ETC.) But the problem is that the downstairs computer now only connects to the router and not the internet.

Here are a few details on what happened right before the problem:

The downstairs computer used to not be able to connect to download.microsoft.com. So I WANTED to fix it. Googled the problem and a guy told me a Trojan was keeping him from connecting and provided a link to software named Trojan Remover that he used to fix the problem. I ran the software and it said it fixed a whole bunch of Trojans and some registry keys.

Ever since running the software the downstairs computer has not been able to connect to the internet, only the router. I am thinking it might have changed a registry key and had that effect.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

It has been recommend that one would first would first try run the Network Wizard again. Reet the PC and see what happens.
Also, did you mention if one was running Vista and the other Windows XP?
Are both into the D-Link with a network cable or is one on wireless?

I've tried resetting a bunch of times. Haven't tried network wizard yet but i will (should i have to if i still have a connection to the router?).
The downstairs one is indeed running XP (service pack 3) while this one (upstairs) runs Vista. Both computers are wirelessly connected to the router.Three rules of Windows networking.
1. Run the Network Wizard.
2. Run the Net work Wizard again.
3. Same as rule 2.
I tried doing what you suggested a couple of times, but now I can't even connect to the router (192.168.0.1). I understand your frustration.
Whenever I am ready to give up, I get a free download of Network Magic.
Here is one link from PCWorld. It is good link, but do NOT download the other stuff they offer. Just get the Network Magic download.
You do not have to buy it or any other software.
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,44361-order,1-page,1/description.html

The right download will look like this:
Thanks for that link! It did not complete my computers connection to the internet, but it did make it able to connect to the router and alter the settings!

Baby steps i guess.

Okay, Every other device in my household still connects to the router and the internet, except for my downstairs computer. :/

Any more suggestions?Update to problem (9/24/09):

I connected an Ethernet cable to the computer and got internet just fine. I ran a software called "Network magic" (By CISCO) and it said it found that I was connected to the internet when I tried to troubleshoot. And I believe I am. All other signs show I am except for the fact that not a single PROGRAM will access it. It appears as if the only problem is that it won't access the internet through my wireless connection.

Solve : networking between 2 states?

Answer»

I work for a drafting business that has 2 locations...one in Ga and one in Al...here in Ga, our communications provider is Comcast...in Al its Brighthouse...We work mainly with autocad and .dwg files.... for the past 10 years or so we have operated on 2 separate servers. All is well when we are working on 2 separate jobs but the problem comes in when we are working on the same job. Files get overwritten and lost because there will be a file that I am working on in Ga, meanwhile someone ells is working on the same file in Al...when they get done with whatever they are doing with it they will e-mail it over here and whoever receives the e-mail will overwrite the file that is on our server, assuming that the one being e-mailed is the most updated one… and bam!! I lost all my work....that is just a simple example of the kinds of issues we run into using 2 servers...its actually more complicated. About a year ago we decided to try and fix it...we had a company based out of peachtree city come in and set us up with a sonicwall router with VPN in each location and set up a "tunnel" between the 2 locations. Ga has the server that both Ga and Al view and edit their files from. It's not working as planned...first off it's slow as crap to access the Ga server from Al through the "tunnel" … 2nd of all, Al has to copy from the Ga server and paste on their computer, work on the file then cut and paste back to the Ga server which leads us right back to where we started (overwritten files and such) just with a slower process so we are kinda worse off than we were to begin with. I am wondering if there is a way to make the "tunnel" a lot faster and a way to ENABLE Al to open a .dwg file directly from the Ga server and work on it on their computer and be able to edit and save just as if they were working at the office in Ga....I know that was a ton of info and it’s a very complicated , confusing situation...but I keep telling myself that we can't be the only business in the world that encounters this problem and there must be a good solution...If you are able to help us out, it would greatly increase our efficiency and everyone here and in our Al office would love you. Please help!!It would seem that you have already identified your problem.
The problem is having two servers.

Withe the proper software, a user has to "check out" a file in order to change it. This requires there be only one copy available for your work. Any other copy can only be an archive and should not be used for updates until there is agreement that the all changes up to a certain point are valid.
VPN is very appropriate for your work. But there still be the restriction that a job be on only one server has to be kept.

There are special programs that DEAL with this issue of several users working on the same data set. But it requires the data set be broken down into small chunks. With CAD files that can be a challenge. That would mean a drawing would have to be in sections that later can be automatically merged into the whole. If you work has not already been organized that way, you have a job before you.
Why not have everybody just use one server? Thee are companies that will rent virtual servers at reasonable prices and offer very good redundant fail safe systems.
For a startling point, why not chat with these people:
http://www.rackspace.com
You could ask if the "Cloud Hosting" thing would work for you.
Of course, many others offer this service. Pick their brain and then you will know what questions to ask when you talk to one of their competitors.

(Pardon my grammar, this is just a quick ANSWER.)One more option is to find out about a using a Citrix sever.
http://www.citrix.com/lang/English/home.asp

We use this method to share files and folders, Across several cities, county's and states with a good security connection.

Solve : CAT5 cable OR CAT5e cable?

Answer»

what do i have to gain if i switch from cat5 to cat5eFrom lanshack.com:

Category 5 Cable Category 5e cable is an enhanced version of Category 5 that ADHERES to more stringent standards (see comparison chart below). It is capable of transmitting data at speeds of up to 1000 Mbps (1 Gigabit per second). Cat5 is a basic cable standard for 10/100 ethernet. Cat5e is enhanced with FireWire to give Gigabit (1000MB/s) speeds. If you use Cat6, the cable is thicker for even faster speeds up to 10,000 MB/s but it can still support 10/100/1000.
I only have a 10/100 network at home but will upgrade to gigabit. So it seem like it's time to upgrade my network sys at home soon, thanks for the reply. But i don't know if i should go cat5e or cat6 . i dont want to go to cat5e than a few later years have to go to cat6, it's up to how much i want to spend.Go with Cat6.Although what neelchauhan STATES is very true. We must remember that our speed to/from the internet is depend on the ISP Provider. LET's said for argument that if a ISP Provider can provide the max download/upload speeds (which is usually not the case), CAT5E will be more then enough. Once again the ISP Provider will furnish u with a modem to meet their speed requirements. Where CAT 6 truly might come in handy is if u use it in your intranet (home network). This means switching all from 10/100 Ethernet to Gigabyte hardware. CAT 6 is made for massive movement of data like very large file (CAD, video, etc) and Data Base. The typical home user would get very little if any advantage from CAT6.

Solve : Internet Lag?

Answer»

I wasnt sure wether or not to post this in the gaming section, but it also is noticable in my normal internet.

Around 3 or 4 days ago i was playing a game online and noticed that i had started to have these random lags for about 15-20 seconds. At first my internet will run fine and i think it wont start but it does. From here it will lag, then work fine, then lag, then work fine, and so on (i tried other games and the same thing happened). I figured it was just going to go away for the first day and a half or so, but its becoming really annoying. So does anyone have any solutions/suggestions or something i can at least try to FIX it?

I run on a Cable modem and have never really experienced this before now. Open task manager to the PROCESSES tab and sort on the cpu column with highest usage at the top (double-click the "cpu" title). Next time there's a lag see if something is eating the cpu cycles.Really basic questions.

Is there a router involved? Have you rebooted the cable modem, and the router, if you have ONE?

Do you run directly from the computer to the cable modem? If you can do this, does it make a difference in performance.Perhaps the server of that online game is the problem not you.

Also it depends upon how long the Network Adaptor has been running, sometimes after a while of recieving quite alot of packets, you may get some lag.
alright thanks for all the answers.

So far out of the things you have said ive done the following already,
1. rebooted modem (unplugged for 15 seconds, oonly did once though)
2. processes have been checked only thing running other then it thats takin cpu up is system idle process (i check that alot)

The servers is a good idea but i ask around on CS source and no one else experiences it ( i play on reliable servers) and the mmo i play no one else i know experiences it.

For the Router question, we have our house wired where our modem is in our basement and idk how our it guy did it but it was when our house was built (not long ago). all i know is im plugged into the wall directly no wireless is involved.

Also, for the network adaptor running alot, i have restarted my computer a few times since this occured so i think it reset the packets. Maybe i am complete wrong and got the packets wrong. If so explain please.
The problem may be in the connection between your ISP and the CS server.

If none of the other players are experiencing the lag then the connection may be fuzzy. As i was saying though i experience it in all servers i play on, and not only in CS.
Im really annoyed by this thing at the moment. It kicks in at the worst possible times! There must be a router or switch somewhere which handles all the ethernet cables in the house. I'd reboot the router, too.Quote from: adamsgotowned on September 29, 2009, 07:37:02 PM

2. processes have been checked only thing running other then it thats takin cpu up is system idle process (i check that alot)

Try the "task manager" tool Microsoft should have provided (and which they finally ACQUIRED with the PURCHASE of SysInternals): Process Explorer.

Download and unzip "Process Explorer". Double-click on "procexp.exe" to run.

Add "Context Switch Delta" to the display. From top menu bar of Process Explorer select "View" -> "Set Columns..." -> "Process Performance" tab -> check box "Context Switch Delta" -> click "OK" button at bottom to accept.

Now on Process Explorer display, left click column heading "Context Switch Delta" and drag it (reposition) next to "CPU" column.

Bring up the "System Information" display. From top menu bar of Process Explorer select "View" -> "System Information".

Let system run awhile. See if you can coorelate the lags to any significant CPU or Context Switch Delta usage on the Process Explorer display. Also look at the "graphs" (CPU Usage and I/O Bytes) on the "System Information" window for "peaks" at the same intervals as the lags occur. If you mouse over those peaks, it should tell you what process was using largest amount of resource during the peak.

Solve : Lost wireless connection?

Answer»

I have a ThinkPad about a year old that is going nuts. About 2 DAYS ago I try to connect to my wireless network and the laptop doesn't even see the network and therefore could not connect. After this I started GETTING all kinds of messages. Host SERVICE process stop working (I think thats what it said), Wlan autoconfig stopped. I tried to start the wlan autoconfig and I got an error:1067. I changed the NUMBER of the adapter from 3 to 2 and that didn't work. I then WENT to the logs and read something like svc.exe faulty. I finally ran Hijack this and I am attaching the log. Any help, I would appreciate. I'm frustrated. Thanks in advance.

[attachment deleted by admin]You should post in the malware removal section because that's where the malware removal specialists who are good with hjt logs are. Have you ran any antivirus logs? it's strange that only your network doesn't appear.Thank you, I will do that.

Solve : Configuring company email?

Answer»

Yes I'm trying to configure the company email on my phone....of course without permission. I'm having trouble finding out the incoming and outgoing mail servers. The email address is ([emailprotected]) only thing i found so far deals with mail.hilton.com or owa.hilton.com both of which i'm able to log into while i'm at HOME. Just tryin to figure out these servers so i can set up on my HTC Touch PRO....any help is much appreciated and thanks in advance.

When in doubt.....ASK google you could set up a mail rule to forward you email to your personal ACCOUNT (but this is not recommended!). If your company ever has a need to check your email ACTIVITIES then your personal account and any system that access it can be taken.

The best option would be to talk to your tech department and have them grant you access to the mail server from your device.

I am currently living in student accomodation, which provides no wireless internet connection. I have a laptop which i plug into a wall port, via an ethernet cable. I have a second laptop, which can not be connected to the internet via the wall port. Would it be possible to ''bridge'' a connection from laptop(1) to laptop(2) wirelessly? With Laptop(1) almost doubling as a ROUTER?

Thanks for READING. Jak.If both laptops can see eachother then you can use ICS.

i want to share the internet connection from this computer to another 10 host computers.how i make this?1. Better Option. For a Small Office Home Office (SOHO) environment, you'd be better off purchasing a router. For 30 to 100 dollars US (in USA) you could purchase a home router and see if that meets your needs.

Solve : connect wireless to cable network?

Answer»

i have a usb modem internet connection , and my dad have a cable internet connection.i want to access remote desktop activity from my end.how i establish this connection.plz send me with example both of them. You can access the desktop of those remote computers using either Microsoft or third party software. I've been told the third party software is easier to setup and use (but have not experience with them). I cannot and will not provide step-by-step instructions for any of these. PERHAPS someone else will volunteer.

Microsoft provides two different functions: Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop. You should look them up using the "Help and Support" function within Windows XP. The Microsoft software requires port 3389 to be open on the firewall.

Remote assistance allows you to connect to an already established Windows logon session to demonstrate, assist, or fix an issue in FULL view of the user. They can see everything you do, disconnect you at any TIME, and MUST invite you to assist before you can connect.
Remote Assistance in Windows XP
Step-by-Step Guide to Remote Assistance

Remote desktop permits you to logon to a remote desktop that is powered on and booted up with Windows (but not necessarily logged into a user account). If a user is logged on when you try to connect, you can force them to log out but you cannot both be on at the same time.

I get a black box where the video should play and I click on the play or pause and nothing happens. When I exit Youtubes site and go back to this page it is the same issue. When I exit youtubes site and go to a different video it plays fine with no problems. I just figured the video file may be corrupt in youtubes end with how infrequent I find one that wont play. Tried these videos on my wifes computer to see if it was just my computer and also wouldnt play on hers, but other videos play fine. * Assumption is broken video files at youtubes end that are not able to be passed over flash to play it.

Solve : Router / Access Point Advice Please?

Answer»

At home I currently use an 8 port router. Seven of the ports are connected to wired devices and the 8th port goes to a WAP. The WAP is several years old and doesn't always start right up when plugged in (needs two or three tries to get it to "boot") and I'm considering REPLACING it. I've done a little research but would appreciate some input from someone more knowledgeable than I in this area (networking is certainly not my strength ).

1) I can't SEEM to find a router that combines a minimum of 8 ports with wireless CAPABILITY. Is there such an animal?

2) There don't seem to be a plethora of choices for WAP's if I simply choose to replace that device.

Assuming I wish to keep the wired devices physically connected (as opposed to wireless) and still want wireless capability in my house, what options am I overlooking? Thanks much in advance.I guess the most convenient way would be a router...
Quote from: Allan on September 15, 2011, 05:53:23 AM

Oh yes-I have tracked down that animal:http://www.bestbuy.com/site/D-Link+-+Wireless-N+Router+with+8-Port+Switch/1358425.p?id=1218252932868&skuId=1358425

If you still need more ports just hook up an ethernet switch (to one of the ports on the router.)
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Wired-Networking/Hubs-Switches/abcat0503012.c?id=abcat0503012You know, I did several Google searches recently and could not find that router. Thanks One additional question. If I do switch routers (currently using a Linksys 8 port) am I correct that any currently assigned static ip address will remain intact and not have to be reassigned?Actually, after reading some reviews on that modem I think I may end up just replacing the WAP. I do appreciate the assistance though.I assign static addresses to my computers through the router interface, not through Windows, because I have had issues with DHCP conflicts and "There is an IP address conflict on your network" in Windows. I am using a DIR-605 (only available in China), which is similar to the DIR-615 except it uses a Broadcom chip.

I would set the computers to automatically obtain IP addresses via DHCP, and then configure the router to send static IP addresses automatically whenever it detects the MAC addresses of the computers that you specify.I assign them through Windows, so it would seem my assumption is correct. But as I said above, probably going to stick with my configuration of wired router and WAP based on customer reviews. Again, thanks. You're welcome

The newegg reviews on the DIR-632 are mixed-one user claims that it offers excellent reception and didn't need any restarts, was rock-stable-another user says it drops connections every few minutes... Probably because it is the first router of its kind-8 ports + Wifi.Quote from: Allan on September 15, 2011, 05:53:23 AM

Only one I know of, I got about 6 weeks ago ago. D-Link DIR-632. ALSO has shared USB port.
http://www.dlink.com/DIR-632

You can connect a switch (or hub or router) to any router as Transfusion stated. I needed a new router because I just got a wireless laptop. The router replaced a Linksys BEFSR-41 4-port router, I suspect you have the -81. The Linksys' have been around for many years and are very dependable. D-Link has a good rep, too. I had an older D-Link wireless that never worked right on wireless, but no problem wired.

Solve : connection was reset while trying to access IP screen?

Answer»

hello all,

Got a wi-fi webcam yesterday and set it up on my network at home. Works fine with the laptop on wifi but would not work with the IP Cam Viewer android app over the 3g network. ACCORDING to their website I needed to set up a dynamic DNS service and port FORWARDING. (http://hit-mob.com/2011/05/30/setting-up-your-ip-camera/)

I followed some instructions I found to do this and enterd my IP address in the web address to access my router configuration. When I enter my IP address in firefox it says the connection was reset and keeps giving me that error every time I try to RELOAD it. When I try on IE it says it cannot display the web page.

any thoughts on what's going on? I cant figure it out From within your LAN, which IP address did you enter for your router? Internal or external?

Solve : Lag when playing online?

Answer»

I'm currently living in a dorm at the University of Michigan, and internet is provided through a wired ethernet port in the wall from a service called ResComp, to which my D-Link EBR-2310 wired router is connected. From there, I have two ethernet cords running to my laptop and my Xbox 360. As far as I can tell, all signs point to the connection being excellent, yet when I try to play any online games on my Xbox 360, I have major lag to the point of it being unplayable. I ran some speed tests on the connection, and it resulted in an upload and download speed of about 9 Mb/s.

I'm not too knowledgeable about networking so I'm hoping someone can help to improve the connection in game, any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance! Is there a lag when you CONNECT your Xbox 360 directly to the ethernet port WITHOUT a router?I haven't tried wiring it straight to the port since my roommate's ALSO need to use it, but I USED to have a switch instead of a router and just recently replaced it with the router to see if that was the problem and I got the same result with each, so I don't think it's a problem with my equipment.http://www.rescomp.berkeley.edu/services/
Is this the service you are talking about?

Have you tried connecting your Xbox 360 through WiFi?
I would CONTACT the administrators if I were you...Yes, only my building doesn't have wireless, and it isn't even allowed.

Contact the administrators and say what, exactly? The same things I've told you?Yes... If you are experiencing problems with a router and with a switch I'd be inclined to say that the problem lies with your campus's network.Okay well thanks for the help, then!

Solve : can crossover cable used in place of standard lan cable?

Answer»

can crossover cable used in place of standard lan cableSometimes.
New routes can sense that you have the cable crossed and after a short interval will switch it over to the right way.
Most likely yes - It used to be the case that it wouldn't but ALMOST any router or switch MADE in the last 5 years (PROBABLY even longer) have 'Auto-MDIX' which will automatically detect the correct cable type and switch accordingly. I currently have a couple of crossover cables connecting my router to PCs and switches and they work fine (The crossover cables were on a great deal (£1 for 10m Belkin Cat5e) so it made sense to get them).Thanks..

Solve : FAXing without a Land Line?

Answer»

I want to rid of my LAND line since I predominantly use a cell phone 99.99% of the time. I have cable from from a provider, is it possible to send [not receive] faxes without a land line using my PC? Please do not recommend a fax service as the alternative.http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Set-up-your-computer-to-send-and-receive-faxesThanks for the link, but that does not ADDRESS my issue. Though the link refers to sending to a FAX server, it is presuming I have a fax server. In my case, this is for HOME, I want to know if its possible to send faxes with a land line or without any third party vendors providing the fax service.

In this day and age, there is a heavy reliance on cell phones rather than land lines, and also many PCs being sold these days no longer have a built-in modem. I want to rid of my land line due to almost zero usage of it, and since I have cable, wondering if it is possible to fax with what I have, and how to go about it.No, unfortunately, you'll have to use the landline for faxing or a service. It's just how that technology works. While the computer can act like a fax machine, the fax machine on the other end receives only from the telephone line.

There are plug-ins for Skype that will allow you to send faxes through Skype for a small fee. This will also require one of the SUBSCRIPTION packages Skype OFFERS for calling to landlines.

The other alternative WOULD be to scan and attach the document to an email. There's a useful discussion of the technical barriers here: http://www.linkedin.com/answers/technology/wireless/TCH_WIR/441836-14493894

Solve : Internet stops working?

Answer»

I've been having trouble with my Internet recently.
It all started after I had installed an update for AVG Antivirus, but I don't know if this has anything to do with it; and I've scanned for threats various times but it never detects anything. What happens is it sort of like gets stuck: when I try to open a new tab it never stops loading, and with web pages too. If i'm watching a video or listening to MUSIC it stops buffering. The Internet works fine again once I restart the computer, but I fear it's becoming frequent and I have to keep opening new tabs and such to check it's still working.
I use wireless NETWORK connection with a Belkin wireless adapter, and it tells me that the STATUS is it's connected and the signal is Very Good/ Excellent, even when the Internet isn't working. When I try the option Repair it just gets stuck. I have other computers at home and my Iphone on which the Internet works fine, it's just this one computer...
Good Afternoon,

Maybe you could disable the Web Browsing Protection to see if that resolves the issue.

http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-forums?sec=thread&act=show&id=88501

If that resolves problem but you prefer to leave it enabled try completing uninstalling, rebooting the computer and re-installing anti-virus application.

Maybe, but it RUNS out in 6 days from now.

Luckily it's been quite good and hasn't stopped working since I've posted this subject...

I got the popup message below:

There is no issue with the network itself as I can connect with other devices (PC, phone, another laptop, etc).

I can still connect to other wifi networks, only fails on these few networks (my home, office, few cafe I usually go). Recently I also noticed a strange change in my home network. I believe this was due to a MS security update. I have not berm able to resolve the issue.
I do not have any more information. Google search does not seem to help. Everybody has some kind of network issue. It is hard to know which are related. The Windows error messages are so cryptic, one has to GUESS as to the meaning.

Solve : Can't stay connected to Wifi!!!?

Answer»

Please help!!! I just got a NEW HP laptop the other day and right away I uninstalled Windows and installed Debian 6.0 Squeeze. I soon REALIZED that I wasn't getting any Wifi connectivity so I tried and tried to install some new drivers for the built-in card but it just ended up in failure each time I tried. Since this wasn't working for me I tried with my Linksys AE2500 USB wireless b/g/n adapter and installed and configured ndiswrapper to try with Windows drivers. I actually got it to work but now the only problem for some REASON is that I am getting disconnected from the Wifi at my school regularly, about every 10 minutes or so at the most. I don't KNOW if this is a problem with using ndiswrapper because I have never heard of it before this, and I also haven't talked to any of the IT staff at my school to see if it is just the network. I greatly appreciate everybody's comments and help on this. Debian 6.0 Squeeze was introduced early this year. It is a BCD system and few hee use Debian and BCD systems.
Did you keep a backup copy of the Windows install? The IT people may tell you they want you to use Windows and then they might help you. Unless your school has a policy of promoting use of BCD for academic reasons.

The are many place you can find help. Just Google:
Debian 6.0
and find lots of sites and forums that may serve you better.Thank you for your reply Geek-9pm. I didn't keep any backup copies of Windows Home Premium because I have a CD with Windows 7 Professional that I can install if I have to. I still am pretty new to Debian because on my last laptop I was running Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 Professional 32-bit. I'll try asking the IT staff at my school because it seems like their network is the only network I am having problems with.

Solve : Internet privacy or not ??

Answer»

I'm more CONCERNED than ever about privacy.........I asked my ISP if they changed the display name in my sent messages. They said "the display name is set in whatever program I USE to send email.'
Does this mean my real name is out there ? The name I registered with when I signed up with their service ? I had thought they were more secure.
What do I do ? Find another server ?Your ISP is correct, you set your name in the program that you use to send and receive emails, this will usually default to your real name. It should be possible to change it in your email client's settings but it makes sense to leave it as your name so people can actually see who an email is from without OPENING it. It'll only be visible to people who you send emails to or whose emails you reply to. As long as you are sending emails to reputable people then there should be no problem with recipients seeing your name, that's all they should see, no other personal info should be there.

With the recent PRISM scandal, I share those concerns. Email is inherently insecure. (I blogged about that a couple of days ago.)

My partner in crime thinks the PRISM thing is a great big "so what". But personally I still think we should consider taking steps to protect our privacy from governments that seem to think their jurisdiction is now global...

Solve : One ethernet port, one computer, two locations??

Answer»

Hi helpful types,

I'd appreciate some help with this problem.

I've moved into a college room which has an ethernet port, and I can attach my MacBookPro to it with an ethernet cable with no problems.

I'd like to be able to work from two different locations WITHOUT switching the cables around (ie, have both the cables usable, but only use one at a time, with a single computer.) I BOUGHT an ethernet "splitter" (I think) from ebay which plugs into my wall's ethernet port. It has a flat cable which plugs into the wall, leading to a BOX with two ethernet connections. I plugged two ethernet cables in and tried to use both but neither worked.

I was assuming they would work like a double adaptor for an electrical plug, but I guess not?

I'd PREFER not to use wireless anything.

Is there a cheap and simple solution for plugging two ethernet cables into the one port, for a single computer in two (close) locations?

Thanks for any advice! What you want is a Hub and requires power.
Google "Ethernet Hub" -without the quotes.
This is what an ethernet splitter is used for:
http://www.ethernetsplitterhub.com/
They are meant to be used in pairs, on on the network admin side and one on your side.
You NEED an ethernet switch, which is an optimized hub.

Solve : Cannot connect to my wireless/stay connected?

Answer»

Hi, I have an old inspiron 1525 laptop that has been having connectivity issues LATELY. Sometimes it logs on to our wireless just fine but then for seemingly no reason will lose connection. It tells me that 'networks are available' and then when I try to log on it tells me there is no network in the area. Right now it has found my network but is telling me "the capability of your network adapter does not meet the requirements of this network." When I run 'diagnose and repair' it tells me there is nothing wrong, yet still won't connect. And now as I sit here it tells me "Windows cannot find any networks." It is very FRUSTRATING, other devices are connected to the wireless with no issues so I know it is a computer based problem. And occasionally it works with no issues at all. I am a novice when it comes to the mechanisms of computers, like seriously for many of you I will need 'face-in-palm' level directions on how to do anything more complicated than installing turbotax. So, I appreciate any help you can give me but I'll need very basic, step-by-step directions. Thanks so much! If you have an available usb port then you could try an external dongle router on the computer as the problem could be related to a weak internal wi-fi chip. You might WANT to (before the latter) look on the internet for updated drivers for the internal wi-fi of the computer.truenorthThank you for your response! Would you mind telling me what a driver is and where I would find that? I'm very unfamiliar with how computers operate, etc. Thanks very much!Go to www.support.dell.com
Enter your Dell SERVICE TAG (located on the bottom of the laptop).
Everything about your Inspiron 1525 is there, including the original shipment date & what items were shipped. Thanks, I'll give it a try. Appreciate the help!

Solve : Networking with a noob?

Answer»

So ok, I'm a bit of a beginner when it comes to NETWORKING. I know my IP's, remote access etc but I WOULD like to know more about networking as its quite interesting. So right, I just started working at a small electronics business which have no IT support. Here is there set up regarding the computer software's etc -

This business has 2 branches, 1 with main server and use, without any server. They use a software, modified for the business to deal with there items, cash sales etc. This software is placed on a server machine which is basically a desktop PC. At my branch located, where there is no server, we have to use remote desktop to access the software. Not all great as the remote connection is slow and annoying.
Whilst at the other branch, where the server is located. The users there are on the same network, MEANING they don't NEED any remote connection etc.

My question is - If the business opens more branches, there is a way to network the computers better than just using remote connection? I really believe that the server is not up to speed to handle any more computers!

Please bare with me on this networking business, like I said above, I'm really not high on networking so help would be great.

Update - Both branches are LAN connected, need to hook a WAN connection to both branches. Not sure how Sounds like you need some application design here that takes into account latency.

I would start by setting up some VPNs between local and remote locations and SEEING how the app performs across that link. Most decent SOHO routers have VPN capabilities. Personally I've had a lot of success with DrayTek routers, but different people have different views.

Note: If your application is based on Microsoft Access, don't attempt this. Access struggles massively across slow links.

Down the application design route - is there an option to create a web-based interface? Or is there a client application that connect back to the server using a proprietary protocol? Was this application written in-house?

Solve : Both LAN and WLAN connection?

Answer»

I have a desktop PC with RJ45 and two laptops with WiFi hardware and RJ45 in each.
This is for connecting two types of network {Ethernet (using RJ45) and WLAN (using WiFi)}.

All this trouble is for playing LAN games with friends.

What I have done till now :
-> Connected LAN wire between My PC to Laptop1 (Worked FINE, both of us can join each others game server)
-> Created an Ad-Hoc wireless access point in Laptop1 and connected another Laptop2 through it with WiFi.
I was thinking to make Laptop1 as central server for game.
Here problem STARTS - Either My PC or Laptop2 can gets able to connect to Laptop1.
That means even though Laptop1 is a central server for game and My PC and Laptop2 are connected to it with different mediums then also three of us can't play games in LAN.
-> Tried above process in reverse order i.e. Laptop1-Laptop2 and then MY PC.

I have a Switch with 6 LAN PORTS (not LAN to WiFi). But trying to implement kind of Hybrid network , but didn't worked .
Is it impossible to connect this type of networks with above mentioned H/W or I did some mistakes?

I can buy WiFi H/W for MY PC (but not willing to).
Please mention WiFi with internal antenna or EXTERNAL antenna will be better for desktop PC of same dbi (don't mention product or company name).
Purpose - Indore gaming within 50 meter.
How much antenna power in dbi is sufficient for this range.

Thanks to all of you I alter the title to:
Wireless LAN / WLAN party advice

You have more than one question.
You are asking:
1. How to set up an Ad-Hoc network.
2. Make a bridge from Internet into a local network.
3. Do this without using a router like every body else does.

Is this for you a puzzle to solve or do you want a solution?

In general, hybrid networks are hard to do.

As for gaming, at a LAN party the common thing is everybody get in with a wired connection via a Modem/Router unit. Wireless is said to be not as good and direct wired tRJ45 Ethernet.

Otherwise if everybody does Wireless in the same room you can have a good party. However, any player 50 meters away is at a slight disadvantage.

Have you read this?
http://www.wikihow.com/Host-a-LAN-PartyTake a look at this site.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299540

It says something about metric value of network adapters. Also says wired network gets preference over wireless network.
Others experts also saying about modification in metric value (Automatic to manual value) to connect WLAN and LAN at same time.

If anyone having detail knowledge on this topic please share.
If you suggest me to go with this, i will give it a try.

Solve : How to set up used Linksys WRT160N?

Answer»

I was given a used router (Linksys WRT160N) and am having difficulty setting it up. I plugged it into my internet modem (DISH box) and my computer detects the old network name the previous owners set it up with. Is there some way to reset it?
I am computer competent in basic stuff, but not sure what to do here.
Also, I don't have the CD for it, is there a way to manually set it up?
I am operating MAC OS X 10.7.5You'll need to get into the router's configuration page. When you're connected to the router (use an Ethernet cable for this) go to start - RUN - type cmd - hit ENTER. Type ipconfig and hit enter. You'll see the gateway address there, type that into your web browser to access the configuration page. From there, you can log in and make the necessary changes. No CD is required, these are usually just some software that isn't that useful and maybe some scripted configuration, nothing earth shatteringly handy.

Ah...just seen you're on a Mac. I'm unsure of the procedure to get the gateway address from that, without just Googling it. The rest STILL applies though. Hope this helps!

P.S. see their support page here for info on the configuration page, to see exactly what you'll need to change. I would recommend just setting it back to factory defaults and then setting it up yourself to your liking, avoids the risk of missing a setting or two.thank you for the reply. I have gotten as far as to the setup page from searching online but can't seem to figure out what to do from there to get it to actually connect to the internet. I reset the router to factory DEFAULT but it still doesn't want to WORK...

Solve : IP Changing After Setting Up a VoIP Server?

Answer»

For about two weeks my IP kept changing (which I made a post about) but that stopped on July 1st. My latency was also unusually high but that also went down a few days ago back to my normal ping. However this morning I once again setup my teamspeak server (a VoIP client) on my dynamic IP and a few hours later my IP changed and my latency increased again.
My ISP is Bell Canada and I had my server up on and off (i turn it off every day) since about August 2012 and never had my IP changing without manually restarting the router.

Do ISPs change IP addresses to discourage servers hosted on dynamic IPs or is there another reason for my issues? I feel like its too coincidental and in the meantime I'll PROBABLY disable my server and avoid setting it back up. As for the latency issues, a few friends on my ISP also experienced increases but theirs also went back down around the time mine did so perhaps its not tied to the IP changing issue.

Thanks for any replies, this is getting a little annoying
Pretty much all ISPs allocate dynamic IPs, which may change when you reboot the modem or may change at intervals, or pretty much whenever they feel like it. Part of that may be to discourage running home servers - most ISPs do also have a section in their terms & conditions prohibiting this.
As an alternative, consider a free dynamic DNS service such as DynDNS or no-ip - they let you have a domain name which "tracks" your IP, so if your IP CHANGES, the domain name will still get you there. That means you could have, say, myteamspeak.dyndns.com and EVERYONE would just point their TS client to that instead of 111.111.111.111. The free SERVICES will have restricted features, I think the one I sued back when I ran a home server only gave you the domain for 6 weeks at a time or something, but it's hardly a hassle to update it every few weeks or months.
Hope this helps.

Solve : Youtube kills internet?

Answer»

Hello,

When I watch a video or listen to music on youtube the whole video does not load, it goes on uninterrupted but it doesn't matter if I WAIT 1 hour, the whole video will not load even if its a small music video of 5 minutes.
When I click on somewhere that is not loaded I lose my connection. For example if Im watching a movie and its just started and its at 2 minutes and if I want to to check out how the movie is and decide to click in the middle (40 minutes) I lose connection since youtube wont load the movie fully. I can watch youtube with no problem but I cant fast forward anything.
************************ http://prntscr.com/1dix1u ************************

If I fast forward on youtube, it kills my connection and it doesn't come back unless I restart the computer, I've tried logging off and back on with no success.

I got good internet, no problems with any other video players.

Dell
Optiplex 380
Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU
E5300 @ 2.60GHz

Ram 4.00 GB (3.21 GB can be used)

WINDOWS 7 professional - 32-bytes

All in all its a worn out computer but as far as I know there are no viruses on it I've experienced that but it seems to vary or depend on the particular video. I suspect numerous factors could be at play here, including some which have nothing to do with your computer or Internet connection.

Let's do a little experiment. I just viewed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyYy7dmAnM8 and had no problem jumping ahead a few minutes, two times, by hovering my mouse over the slider BAR showing time and clicking on it. I'm using the Opera browser on my Windows 8 laptop.

Try that video and let us know what happened. BTW Im using google chrome

Odd but yes, I clicked back and forth 10+ times with no problems, but as USUAL it only loads 40seconds ahead, continually.
That reminded me to check if a temporary video file was saved so I checked C:\Users\"Username"\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cache and I found no copy of anything I've watched so far, just MENTIONING it since every little detail might lead to a solution

I'll try Opera and see if there is anything different with it.

Solve : Internet shows flawless page loading results, but streaming videos is slow.?

Answer»

I'm not sure if this topic is in the right section because it's such a specific problem, if it isn't please move it to an appropriate section.

My computer specs are not the problem I can run crysis max settings at max FPS.

Ok now that question has been answered, my problem is this. To explain what my title means, not youtube (for some reason I don't have problems with youtube) but other video players (novamov, videobb, videozer, megavideo etc.) SOMETIMES would be slow as *censored*. I would like to blame my internet connection for the slowness but the fact that I'm able to load pages really fast at the same time that my videos stream ever so slowly confuses the heck out of me. So maybe it's not my internet network (which I am sharing between 5 people), but something ELSE but I don't know what it is exactly.

It's weird because this hasn't become much a problem until recently. What browser are you using? Have you tried clearing your cookies, cache, and temporary Internet Files?Streaming video requires a LOT of bandwidth; loading a single web page does not. Have you tried a speed test, such as www.speedtest.net?I'm using internet explorer 9. Yes I always do that.

I just did a speed test run: PING: 5 ms DOWNLOAD: 63.85 mbps UPLOAD: 2.92 mbps63.85 Mbps Holy crap that is one fast internet connection!

Have you tried using another browser? i.e. Chrome/Firefox? Older video sites may have incompatibility with the newly-released IE9. Yes I recently tried google chrome but it gives the same results. Well then again I do share the internet among 5 people, but I am ALSO told sometimes the slow streaming is not because of bandwidth hogging. Like because the whole neighborhood is using the internet at this certain time that's why the internet is not working, or the internet server is on a coffee break. I am truely at a loss (infact I have a hard time believing it's any other reason than bandwidth hogging).Considering your problem, you need to do the speed test more than once to see if there are certain times you have a slow down in bandwidth. If some of the others that you share your internet connection with are downloading video at the same time it's going to slow down your downloads.

If the speed you measured holds true you shouldn't have any problems downloading videos. As outrageous as it is when someone downloads, everyone else's internet goes down. I've confirmed it again and again, the most recent memory being my dad downloading some old old series, and for that whole hour I wasn't able to go on the net. Wasn't even able to load pages. As soon as he stopped downloading, internet was fine and dandy again.

I don't mind if the internet goes down because that just makes it obvious that someone's downloading, but what bothers me is why there are times when streaming is so difficult. Because I know for a fact that everytime someone downloads the internet goes down. If nobody's downloading, why would the internet behave like that?i had the same problem !
but i only had it every couple of DAYS ...
anyway i finally figured out how to fix it :
unplog your router for about 20 seconds and plug it back in it worked for me !
trust me ts that simple I think that more than likely you have identified the reason yourself. Varying available bandwidth. However if you know the other users and have access to them and can get their co-operation then you can test the theory. In whatever combinations you can arrange as to simultaneous usage from no other to all at once.Access one of the video sources that can be very slow and with a controlled situation as i have suggested try and observe what if any difference occurs. If there is no significant difference then that is not the issue. However like you i suspect it is.truenorth

Solve : Whats these ipv6 addresses?

Answer»

Hi, I would be much grateful if you just simply explain this. So, in my firewall network box there are three ip addresses, one of which is my personal ipv4 address and other two are ipv6, they are-FF00:: net mask 8 and FE80:: net mask 64. I dont know much about internet ant just would like to know if this is normal and why I have those ipv6 addresses while my ISP uses ipv4 and i have disabled ipv6 checkbox in network configuration. I have just one home PC, no router or modem, cable internet CONNECTION, WINDOWS 7.
Some note: sometimes my firewall box pops-out with the message "new NETWORKS detcted" and there are these three addresess shown. I think its because my ipv4 address changes time to time, but not sure.
I have attached screenshot of my firewall box. Thanks in advance.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]ff00 is the prefix for the IPv6 multicast address, and fe80 is the prefix for the IPv6 link-local addresses.
In other words, they're not actual IPS, they are ranges of IPs, but not "real" IPs - they don't resolve to an actual computer or device, it's just a predefined range set aside for some IPv6 functions. Nothing to worry about! All right then, thanks for your answer. Should I wait for other responses or press resolve button?Unless there's anything else you're unsure about, you can GO ahead and mark the topic resolved if you like

There is a wireless PC and a Ethernet-connected PC (DON-PC) connected to the same router (192.168.0.1) and NOTHING else, and I wondered what all these 'active connections' were?

Is it anything to concern myself about?

Thank you.

[YEAR+ old attachment deleted by admin]You are the only person on the network.
You are 192.168.0.2 in the LIST you attached.
The NUMBER after the IP is a port number. You have programs or some service that requires special ports for services.
The use and purpose of the ports is explained here:

Solve : Sharing on Home Network?

Answer»

So I have my PC networked for access to the files from my laptop. As of yesterday, it was working FINE. I could access everything I needed, logging in with user credentials and whatnot. Today, I can access the user folder, but not the bulk of its contents - the 4 main folders are AVAILABLE (documents, videos, music, pictures), but the other folders aren't showing up. I can get the folders to show up, but I can't access them. What would have changed from last night to this morning? What operating systems are these systems using? Did you set file sharing to everyone wide-open or for specific users on the same DOMAIN?

* I have run into similar issues myself back when I had mapped drives between 2 systems with XP and Windows 7. What I ended up doing is building a NAS and using that for a while. My symptoms were that Windows 7 could always see the content on the Windows XP machine, but the Windows XP machine was randomly having issues with seeing the folder/files at the Windows 7 system. I then upgraded away from XP to 7 and with 2 systems with LIKE OS the troubles went away. I then shut down my Netgear NAS and ended up selling it to a friend who needed network attached storage because he didnt like having to move USB cable among many systems to TRANSFER data and he too had various OS systems.

Solve : Recent Increase in Latency?

Answer»

On speedtest.net my latency used to be around 20ms but as of a few days ago it has more than doubled to around 50-60ms. My ISP is BELL Canada and I have made no changes to my internet plan. After asking around, friends who are with another ISP are still getting their usual 20ms ping. Any idea on why my latency has increased? Thanks in advance.

Also it seems like my download speeds has increased slightly but it's still lower than what I've been paying for (that's another issue that I've just learned to live with being in a middle of nowhere city).AmbiguousNinja, don't expert it to get better.
I get long pings from Yahoo, , about 150ms
Internet usage is growing so fast, expect more latency and loss of data.
They can not get new equipment installed fast enough.

Latency is important in games , voice calls or any activity where a quick response is needed. But many other things do not matter. Examples are Watching TV reruns, NetFlix movies, Facebook and general surfing the web.

This could be down to a problem at your ISP's end as they may be doing work on their network, It would probably be best to CONTACT them and ask. The problem could also be an issue with your router, TRY restarting it and see if it gives any difference.

Have you also TRIED a different speedtest.net server as the one you have previously been testing with may be having issues on its network.

You may also want to try using this which will monitor your latency 24/7 and graph it - It's based in the UK so latency will be higher but it's great to see if there are CERTAIN times of day when your latency is higher than usual: http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/.My latency has remained constant throughout the day and I have tried restarting my router which didn't change anything. On speedtest.net I tried a few other servers that came back with higher latencies so the server that it finds for me seems to be the closest and the one that it has used when my latency was ~20ms.

Solve : Bluetooth?

Answer»

I am trying to get the photos from my cell phone (Samsung SMOOTH) to my computer which has Windows 7 Home on it. I have the BLUETOOTH set up on the computer. The computer sees the phone and the phone has the the computer listed in it's bluetooth device list. But when I go to send an image it only has two choices on the phone, 1 - Picture Msg, 2 - To online Album. I was looking around the internet and I thought I read that there should be another option. I guess I was expecting to go into my Windows Explorer and see the phone listed so I could pull the photos off it (like a USB connection I guess). Does bluetooth work that way. If not what is the purpose of having a bluetooth connection to your computer?I had a phone that I was able to remove the sd card out of and insert the sd card into a card reader and get my photos off of it before. Never TRIED the route through bluetooth. Telephone provider suggested I post them from phone directly to facebook or e-mail using the phones internet access feature at a cost per minute to retrieve photos to send them to PC.

I said .......it, and attempted a USB connection between cell phone and PC with no luck unless I wanted to charge my phone even when trying to use tethering software. So I opened battery compartment and popped the sd card out and inserted it into my card reader of my wifes system and photos were there quickly accessible!!

http://www.ehow.com/how_5802674_pictures-cell-phone-sd-card.htmlI don't have a sd card in my phone. I considered sending them by email but I didn't want to spend the money on it. I guess I should have taken my REAL camera with me on the hike through the park today. I took a few grab shots now they're stuck on the phone.According to this page sending via Bluetooth is an option on your phone.
Is Bluetooth enabled on the phone, and have you PAIRED it with your computer? Try deleting the pairing, restart the phone and PC, then try again. Bluetooth can certainly be used that way, I did it myself on some odler phones I had, ones that didn't have a memory card and didn't do file transfer via USB. Speaking of which, is that an option? If your phone has a USB connection, plug it into your PC and see if you can access the internal storage.I got every thing set up and tried to find the "Step 3 Select "Send" and then "Via Bluetooth" but couldn't find the "Via Bluetooth" option. I'll have to go through the whole thing again and see if I missed some thing.
