Solve : about change of public IP?

Answer»

hello all,

am sorry for the newbiee question .... could any one please tell me... if i need to change the public IP where do i need to change .... do i in windows 2003 server or in the firewall...

am using
  system: HP Proliant ML110 G2
OS: Windows 2003 server SEWhy do you need to change the public IP address?MUCH more information about your network setup needed. Are you referring to an internal IP such as for a LAN or are you talking about from your ISP? Quote from: TheHoFL on MAY 29, 2009, 04:51:17 PM

Are you referring to an internal IP such as for a LAN or are you talking about from your ISP?

and did you know it's been 4 days and the original poster has not responded?I didn't notice, but what does that really matter anyway? The whol;e point of posting on here is to get advice and/or assistance...god *censored* it... four years, four days- it doesn't matter... It's OLD. obviously the original poster has lost interest or REALIZED that his goal was both stupid and likely impossible since it isn't a setting on the PC but rather of the DHCP server that assigns the outward FACING router/PC an IP address on the ISP's network.

I know here is for assistance and it's good to try to help others but you are asking the original poster a question that he'll probably not be answering. So you know ....

Solve : problem setting up a static ip?

Answer»

Hey guys. i am new to this whole networking thing. I am trying to set up a static IP in order to do port forwarding. IVE read a number of guides and none of them have worked. I have a WRT54G router and vista. So i found out my IP, Subnet, Gateway and DNS. I WENT into my network properties and went into tcp/ipv4. i entered in all the information i got from USING ipconfig/all . The internet WORKS, everything is cool. I got to my web based router settings i try to change my connection TYPE to Static IP. I enter in all my info and i get a message that says "LAN IP same with WAN IP". what is a wan ip, why do i need it, and what can i do about all this? also my ip address is 192.168.2.122 is that 2 in the third position wierd?

Thanks
S Hello
Can I ask why static IP? Is this for a gaming purposes? The LAN IP is basicly the address range within your home network. The WAN IP is for wide area network. Basically what is happening is IP address conflict between the LAN and WAn networks. The LAN IP is what lets u communicate with in your home network. The WAN lets u communicate with other computers within a network. Try setting your Wan static and your LAN DHCP. Let us know what happens.

Solve : My internet doesn't work?

Answer»

So my internet doesn't work and i am forced to do this on my roomates computer for now. Recently i was STUCK in a boot log on/off loop but was able to FIX that without losing all my information. But when i was then able to log into windows XP i was unable to get internet. I am on a laptop with wireless and the wireless WORKS. It finds the available connections and connects to them, but no information is able to pass through. EVEN when i connect to the router via Ethernet or USB cable the same problem occurs, for both Firefox and IE. I just get the old "internet explorer cannot display the webpage". I have no viruses, and my computer is clean. What is the problem? Did some settings or background info change when i was formatting my computer? Need help here.1. Click Start>RUN (Start>"Start search" in Vista).

2. Type in (or copy and paste):

          cmd /c ping google.com>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

      and press Enter.

3. Notepad will open.

4. Copy all text in Notepad ([Ctrl-A], then [Ctrl-C]), and then post it (paste = [Ctrl-V]) in your next reply.

Solve : Losing Ping??

Answer»

We are totally desperate at this point. Any suggestions, comments, etc., would be GREATLY appreciated.

Long story short...

My parents bought a brand new Dell computer (Window's Vista). On their OLD computer, Internet connection was slow (Motorola SURFboard... Comcast cable Internet), but computer was from 2001, so we figured that was why.

Unplugged old computer, plugged in new computer.

Computer won't connect to Internet.

Spend 3 hours (I kid you not) on phone with Comcast. They walked us through different diagnostics. Change USB to Ethernet. Nothing worked. Told us to call Dell.

Spent another 3 hours on phone with Dell. They walked us through SAME diagnostics. Nothing worked. Told us it was a Comcast issue.

Comcast came out once. Comcast came out twice. Hooked up a black box to our computer. Told us we are "losing ping" (whatever that means). They checked lines in the house, they checked lines out of the house. Told us it was our computer.

Took computer to WORK, hooked it up there, it works absolutely wonderfully. Internet connection PERFECT.

Comcast coming back tomorrow.

Do you think it's my parents computer, or Comcast? (My mother, bless her heart, is convinced that it is the computer, even though it works perfectly with another connection.)

I'd like some info to ease her mind, as I have to go over there and deal with Comcast yet once more!

Simple question.
Can you beg or borrow a friends laptop and take it overt there and try it? It it does not work, consider dropping Comcast. They should have brought out another new modem and a laptop of there own and not rely just on there test equipment. Don't ask me why, I will really go a a tirade.Since the computer works fine at work, must be Comcast. Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 16, 2009, 08:35:49 PM

Actually, they "said" they were going to bring one. Convieniently, they forgot.

I do have a brand new netbook that I will be bringing along with me tomorrow to test, and hopefully show that it IS their problem.

Oh, and they STOLE our personal modem (my dad didn't know that my mom had purchased it years before, and let them take it, thinking it was rented. I'm pretty sure they have that info on file at Comcast, but anyways...) and gave us a brand new one, that they tested and said was "fine". Quote from: Broni on April 16, 2009, 08:36:19 PM

That is what I thought, but clearly, I think Comcast is taking advantage of my parents since they are obviously NOT the least computer saavy, at least with terms and jargon.Comcast definitely sucks. Quote
Comcast definitely sucks.

Boni I am not trying to disagree with you. I have noticed that the competence and honesty of the people the service providers sends out has some relationship to how they perceive there customer.

My experience with ATT DSL shows this.
When I made clear that I have gone through the standard script many times, then they start turning me over to people who know what they are doin. Took six months until a savvy tech showed me the DSL modem was a piece of trash.

Maybe that might be the case with Comcast.

Comcast has a lot of Modem trouble...
Actually, most DSL and Cable Internet Service Providers have modem troubles...

The reason why is simply because the modems are incredibly cheap. I mean, made with the cheapest parts, and very little quality testing.

Also, with Comcast, the cable line can have a habit of getting interrupted, either because the cable itself has a problem, or there is a device CONNECTED to it at the same time causing interference. Ask them to test the actual line, not just troubleshoot your computer and modem to death.
I just troubleshot a Comcast problem last week. Guess what it was...

Alan <>< Let me tell y'all about an experience that I had with Comcast.

Since I work overseas and am away for weeks at a time my wife records all the shows we like to watch so that I can see them when I get home. So a few days after I get home one time I am happily sitting on the couch watching some of the recorded shows and I figure that since my wife and kids are in bed already I will finish the show that I am watching and then call it a night.

I did this thinking that I would be able to get up the next day and resume watching the other recorded shows. BOY, WAS I WRONG!!!!!!

I was the first one up the next morning and decided to start one of the shows while making breakfast. I turned on the TV and Cable box and the program guide looked like something out of the 80's or like a 3 year old designed it. Well I didn't think much about this at the time. Any way, I hit the DVR button to pull up the list of recorded shows and low and behold the list was blank. All of the shows had been deleted. This wouldn't have been very bad except for the fact that it was about 3 weeks worth of shows that I hadn't watched.

So once my wife got up I went to our ROOM and checked the DVR in there to see if the kids shows were there or not and they were gone also.

Now this is where the geniuses at Comcast come into the picture.

I give the local Comcast office a call and let them know the program guide is screwed up looking and that every thing on both my DVRs had been erased. I get politely informed that the program guide isn't messed. They changed it to make it "Better". I also get informed that there is no way they can remotely erase my DVR so some one in my house must have done it. I explain to the person that I was the last one to go to bed and they were all there and I was also the first one to get up and I didn't erase anything. So this person then ask if I am married or have kids. I say yes I am married and I have a 7 year old girl and a 4 year old boy. So this person then proceeds to ask if my wife deleted them. I repeated that I was the last one to bed and the first one up so no she did not delete them. Even if she would have got up in the middle of the night and done it I would have woke up when she did the one in the bedroom. I then get asked if one of my kids erased them. So once again I go thru the fact that they were all in bed before me and got up after me.

I then get told that there is no way Comcast can retrieve anything that I deleted from my DVR. So I repeat that I didn't delete anything. So this person has the nerves to say that if me or my wife didn't delete every thing then it must have been one of my kids. That was the wrong thing for him to say. I asked to speak to his supervisor and he said he was the supervisor so I asked once again to speak to his supervisor and this time he reluctantly let me.

When the supervisor gets on the phone I tell him what the problem is and we pretty much go thru the same thing as with the other person except the supervisor didn't accuse my kids of doing this after I told him that they didn't do it. Needles to say I didn't get any help and I proceeded to let them know exactly how ticked off I was.

I wasn't really up set over the shows. I was more upset over the fact that they repeatedly accused me and my family of doing this. If any of you have Comcast and have ever wanted to erase every thing on you DVR it is a very long process and not something that could just be accidentally done on two different DVRs on the same day.

I did eventually speak to some one at a regional office for them and got an explanation. Apparently each local office can decide how their program guide looks and my office decided to change theirs and when this happens it resets and erases all content on any DVR and Cable boxes in the area. I was also apologized to by 3 different people about the way my local office handled my call and the fact that they would accuse children of doing something that they should have known was done by them. While on the phone with them they placed a conference call to my local office and had me listen in to the conversation. Since I had given them the names of both people that I SPOKE with they both got chewed out pretty good and told that they could either learn the systems they represent or find a new job. They were also told if they ever get caught treating a customer the way they did me they would be fired immediately. After they hung up with my local office I thanked the person I was talking to and told them they made me feel better now that I knew there was actually some one in the company that cared.

I never did get any of the shows back nor did I get anything free out of the deal for my frustration but at least I got satisfaction that the first two people I talked to got what they deserved.

Solve : Download and Upload Speed???

Answer»

Recently, I tried downloading stuff from the net and the download rate with Internet Download Manager was about 50k. (about 100k on lucky days) But when I check my speed using the online speedometer, it stated that my download speed was 770 kbps and 394 kbps for uploading. Can anyone explain to me why the big difference in the real thing and the test?

Thanks in advance.

Btw, I'm using Streamyx (I think it's 1.0M package.)Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) it will tell you the reason. They did limitated that.
Cheers.what do you mean by limitated? You can try to check 2wire.com or speedtest.net to see your speedthe weird thing is that quite often, the download speed can get to as low as a few kbps and that is already with download booster..Download Booster or "Speed Boosters" never work for what they say about speeding up your connection speed.Well, my connection speed is very slow and I am not SURE why.

But what i MEANT was, when I did the speed test, i got like 770 kbps for my download speed but my download speed is never anywhere near that. The highest I got was like 100 kbps ++ and quite often it can get to as low as around 10 kbps. Why is that so?Note: When you download files from a website, you are downloading/transferring the files from their server to your computer.

Quote

Why is that so?
Well, because of the following factors:

Your bandwidth
Their bandwidth
Your download speed
Their upload speed
Any upload limits they may set on their server
Latency between servers
Is there any way where I can improve it? Coz it's kinda annoying when you're trying to download something and it takes forever to finish.. Quote
Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) it will tell you the reason. They did limited that.
Contact your ISP, they will give you an answer.
My conclusion is: You can get as much as you pay! (so if you want more internet speed you have to pay more).
Cheers.ouhkay...thx.. Quote from: dr_iton on April 23, 2009, 06:36:51 AM
My conclusion is: You can get as much as you pay! (so if you want more internet speed you have to pay more).

This isn't always true. Some internet providers charge more then others yet they may both offer to give you the same speed. So you can't always get more speed by paying more.

Like Carbon stated there are a lot of factors that determine you speeds.
Other then the ones mentioned my carbon you also have to consider the below.
Type and condition of modem.
# of computers sharing your service.
Even the weather can effect your speeds. And even the NUMBER of people downloading from the same source.

One more question comes to mind.

Flazzard, are you talking about torrents, or just downloading from websites within the web browser?actually I'm not using TORRENT, but I am using a download booster called Internet Download Manager. It was recommended by a FRIEND. At times, with the booster, it's rate is just merely around 10kbps or even lower when the test told me that my download speed is 770kbps. I get the part about the ISP provider limiting the download rate or whatever, but i believe it's not till that low. Quote from: macdad- on April 23, 2009, 06:17:28 AM
Download Booster or "Speed Boosters" never work for what they say about speeding up your connection speed.

Solve : I've got a problem with my small network?

Answer»

hi,

i have a wired LAN network of 6 computers at home, all running windows XP s.p. 2. I'm using a 100Mbps 16 port Ethernet switch (fsd1600 by planet).

i have a reoccurring problem when trying to shared folders and DRIVES on different computers on the network. whenever i try to OPEN a folder there's a delay of about 2-3 seconds. this really slows down my work, but after that initial delay everything runs smoothly. it might not sound like a big deal but my autocad software works on files that are saved on a single server. that makes every action done by autocad take that much longer. it amounts to a substantial waste of time.

anyone know what might be causing this delay?
thanks i got a bigger problem i cant share my files.
I can see my share folder but i cant access it.
it keep saying i do not have permission!!!
Hello shahar

Autocad SW is very TAXING resource program. There usually r large files too. Can u post the PC spec's. It might be that the lag time u speak of, is the retrieving time for the file. U might want to check out the file transfer speed. Also u might consider upgrade to a 1 Gigabyte mbs switch and make SURE u have Cat 5E Ethernet cable. U might also have to check the NIC to make sure it is EITHER a 100 or 1 gig mbs. Hello TChai
It might be better if u start a new post instead of tring to follow this one.

Solve : Limited but no connectivity?

Answer»

Ok, I have two computers working at the same time. They both worked but my older one (EMACHINES) had to get the harddrive wiped. Both connected to the internet. I had to switch cables each time I wanted to get internet. So I sent my older one in to get fixed and when I got it back, my newer one ,which just sat here during that time, says its limited but no connectivity. It worked fine before I sent my old computer in to get fixed. I didnt do anything or used it during that time. But during that time, I got better internet (from 1mpg to 7mpg) Could that be a problem? I dont know much about internet part of the computer.Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), TYPE in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again.

If that doesn't work...
Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF):
http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in CASE DAF needs a file. Likely not!

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here, one at a time, do the below:

Reinstall BITS
Reinstall Windows Firewall
Repair Permissions
Reset networking

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

Restart computer.
ok. wow. haha. thats alot and Im working on it right now.Its not working. i tried everything you said in that order. please help.Any errors in Device Manager regarding Network Adapter?
If not, reinstall its driver anyway.

If that doesn't help, you may need new ethernet card (~$15).I dont think I need a new cable cause it works fine with my other computer.I said card, not cable.oh. hahaha. sorry. that makes sense now. and ALSO there were no errors in the device manager.Try new card then.

Solve : client pc cannot access internet?

Answer»

hi everyone...am facing some problem at work. we have a win 2003 domain controller and it has no problem ACCESSING ht net. there are 2 lan cards in it. one with the range of a 10.10.x.y ip and the other with a 192.168.x.y...the clients are running win xp and are getting an automatic ip of 192.168.x.y..since the routers wire is in the 10.10.x.y lan card and the switch wire is in 192.168.x.y lan card..the domain controller has internet...but for some reason the clients seem to have a problem..NONE of the clients can access the internet..they can ping with domain controller..the router and even share files across the network.

IF i remove the routers wire from the domain controller..and PUT it in a switch..and put the switch wire..(which is currently in the 192.168.x.y lan card) and put it in the 10.10.x.y lan card..the domain controller gets an ip from the 10 range..so do the clients..and they ALL can access the net..but when i do what i have mentioned above in order to make the clients get an ip of 192...the net doesnt seem to work..i really need to figure this out..your HELP is great appreciated..thank you all..2 card suggest maybe one is Ethernet and the other ? Have to give a little more infor like what type of card (brand) and how many PC. The 10.x.x.x. is in the range of a private IP Address and the 192.x.x.x. is in the range of public IP Adress. It might be looping between the router and switch hance the STRANGE IP problem. The Domain controller in which device is it connect to the switch or router? I assume it is the router that is why u r getting to the internet. What is the switch connect to? write back and let us know.there are about 7 pcs...the routers cable is going in the 10.10.x.y lan card and the switches cable is going in the 192.168.x.y lan card..meaning that both of the ethernet cards are occupied...there is a dhcp configuration as well..the range is 10.10.x.y and the scope is 192.168.x.y....this is how am getting the 192 ips on all the clients as well as the domain controller..but the problem which persists is the fact that they dont have internet when they are automatically getting an ip of 192. but when they are on 10.10 ip...its all fine...do you think that i should give the dns on all the clients statically?...would it help?Aright first do not use both cards. Try this, from the domain controller card connect a Ethernet cable to the switch. What this basically will do is give u internet connect and a intranet connect. The client should be able to network with each other and still have internet access. U might have to set up Active DIRECTORY to give permissions to client. Follow the Link below for a explanation on how to.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc786438.aspx

There is really no short cut on do this, but following the article link. If u look on the left plane u might want to go the Win 2003 server explanation.

Good luck.

Solve : Want to create a Photoserver (only for family use)?

Answer»

Hi,
My dad just asked me if I could create somekind of photoserver.
The IDEA is to share our photo's with our family, so I was thinking about somekind of server. It will be mainly used within our house, but my sister should also be able to VIEW and download the photo's from her house. The photo's should be stored on 1 HDD and they should be backuped to an other one.

Now, my big question is:
Do I need to work with a server, or can I simply use a network HDD (if that even exists) and set up a VPN or something.
And how can I do that, I KNOW some about networking, adabting the firewall of PC's and routers to make it work, But I don't know anything about actual sharing HDD over the internet (Safe).

We have a WRT160N router but we mainly use the networkcables.
We have 5 PC's all portables 3vista's and 2 xp. The PC at my sister's house is a Vista (all the vista's are vista home premium and the XP's are XP pro's)

What kind of storage divice would I need? We would like to have a capacity of 1TB (+backup probably 1GB too then )

Thanks in advance

Jonas WautersU r diffident going to need a VPN. Have to share the HDD and it just keeps going and going. It will be easier just to find some local account on Picaso. Try this link

https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?hl=en_US&continue=http%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com%2Flh%2Flogin%3Fcontinue%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fpicasaweb.google.com%252Fhome&service=lh2&ltmpl=gp&passive=true

Picaso is a web base photo sharing application that U and other family members can upload, download picutes and share them to see. Write back and let us know. Was that ENGLISH Midsail?

Let's ask this first...

Why do you want to maintain the server yourself? There are plenty of free online options you could try at, as well as some higher end paid systems. Might be a bit more convenient. The problem is that we have an up and download limit in Belgium, so we can't upload and download each photo.
So the idea was to make somekind of main HDD for all the computers in the house so we can store mainly photo's but also other stuff to it. And if my sister would need a photo she could get it off that HDD.

Thanks for the reply anyway. But it's not really a good solution

I've also been thinking of using that same Main HDD (as I like to call it) later to store music and stream it to our stereo as I've read articles of those kind of stereo's

What about something like this?

Solve : Limited Connectivity-slow streaming/downloading?

Answer»

Hello, Lewk in the Chat room has been trying to help me out with this problem. I came here to post a photo and he suggested others might be able to help as well.

I just got a new Desktop, before then I used a desktop and a laptop hooked up to a cable gateway. Never had any problems til I got this new PC. It is a used PC, a friend gave it to me, completely random I get DCed with it saying Limited connectivity. Sometimes its fine for hours, sometimes it HAPPENS back to back many times. My laptop stays connect and runs fine, its just the desktop that does it.

I try to use the "diagnose and repair" feature of Vista and it gives me 3 options.
The options are as follow:

1) A problem with your network router or Broadband modem might be preventing an internet connection.
2) Automatically get new IP settings for the network adapter "Local area connection"
3) Reset the network adapter "Locl area connect"

Option 3 is the only one that works, and it ALLOWS me to reconnect but the problem still persist.

Lewk asked to see the IP info for my laptop, which is here:

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h31/Nixxo84/IPinfo1.jpg

Also the IP info for the computer with the problem:

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h31/Nixxo84/DesktopIPinfo.jpg

Also would like to note, it seems to do this alot more often when I'm downloading things, using sites like Youtube, and it did it like 6 times just while I was trying to up load these photos on photobucket. I'll be in the chat room or you can contact me at [email protected] if you need ANYMORE info.

Thanks so much for any help. You can try to check speedtest.net or 2wire.com to see your speed, but i doesn't make your speed faster you will just see the speed of your internet. It's not just the speed problem, it's the limited connectivity/Disconnecting problem. I've come to think it only DCs when I'm downloading/uploading/streaming. I can surf the web, sit in chat rooms just fine, but as soon as I start to download something, or for example upload a photo to photobucket, or watch a video on Youtube I get disconnected.Have you tried to call your IS provider? Quote from: KingPincer on APRIL 30, 2009, 08:01:13 AM

Have you tried to call your IS provider?

No, because my other computers are fine, so I'm thinking its the new desktop. Also I found out its not only when streaming, downloading, and uploading, just seems more frequent when doing and any of them

Solve : ethernet controller not configured correctly?

Answer»

This is for my Dell Pentium 4, windows XP, back-up machine, not the machine in my specs / signature.

I tried connecting to the internet after re-installing XP but get a message "internet explorer cannot display the web page". When I click on the option "Diagnose connection Problems" it says "Windows could not detect any WIRED or wirless network card installed on your machine. Please make sure the network card drivers are installed properly".
I went to device manager and in 'Ethernet controller properties' > 'General Tab' it says, "This device is not configured correctly (code 1). When I click on 'Reinstall Driver' the wizard cannot find it automatically, even with the Dell CD that came with the computer that says 'drivers' in the drive.
I installed ANOTHER network card (PCI) that I had with the same results. I tried downloading the driver for the (PCI) card to my other machine then burned to disk and installed on this machine = no connection / same error in device manager. It's probably something simple so what am I missing?
BTW Device manager also shows to have a problem with "Multimedia Audio Controller", = "The drivers for this device are not installed".

Thanks,
MikeTry another PCI slot...thanks Broni. That was the answer I needed. As I was about to take the PCI card out of the slot, I NOTICED it was not fully plugged in although the retaining screw was in ect. I pushed it further into the slot and it started working. I still don't know what happened to the onboard network ADAPTER but I guess it doesn't really matter now. ? Nice job
On-board network adapters do go bad

Please is it possible to use
a different operating systems
in a single LAN.
If possible which type of
operating sytem is recommendable is it
multi OS or same OSU can use any OS to connect on a LAN. Remember OSI model is a SET standard, if u do do not know what the OSI is google it. It is a standard that EVERY network must follow irregardless of operating system. Weather it is a home base or Enterprise network. I, myself have OS X, Linux and Window. All of this OS are in the same LAN. TRY to talk to each other is were it becomes tricky. But in the end they pretty much talk to each other. Example, my main OS is OS X, we use Linux as a print SERVER. We select to print something from the MAC 's to the to the Linux PC (print server). Finally dare I say a Window box. That we use to send file and folder between the Linux printer server and the MAC. Hope this answer your ?.

Solve : Access Apache Web Server outside of router??

Answer»

Hi there

I am having a problem with accessing my Apache web server through my ROUTER. I have set the computer up which is running the Apache web server to use the IP 192.168.1.10. The problem is that when I enter the IP which I have been assigned by my ISP into my web browser, it takes me to my routers configuration. I DONE some google searches and found that disabling remote management would prevent this. So this is what I did but still, the IP is going to the routers configuration login screen. I have even restarted the router but its doing the exact same thing. I have set up port forwarding, DDNS and have allowed the IP 192.168.1.10 outside the routers firewall. But non of this is allowing me to access the Apache web server. I can only access the server if I either enter 192.168.1.10 into a browser or use Hamachi. Does anyone KNOW how I could fix this?

I am using a D-Link DSL-2740B router.

Port Forwarding setup:

Name Address External Port Internal Port Protocol
Apache1 192.168.1.10 80 80 TCP
Apache1 192.168.1.10 443 443 TCP
Apache1 192.168.1.10 80 80 UDP
Apache1 192.168.1.10 443 443 UDP

Solve : How to do??

Answer»

Please anyone Help me i have Internet Club and i've 11 computers and a DSL line with two 8 ports switches

the DSL line directly comes from modem and i connect it with one of my switches and all other computers are connected o the same switch

whenever the internet disconnect as some reasons All the sharing stops between my other computers and they SHOW limited connection or no connectivity.

i WANT to keep my All computers share even the DSL is disconnect please help

thanks in advance Does the DSL Router provide the IP SETTINGS for all the PCs? In other words does it run as a DHCP server, proving automatic IP addresses to all the computers connected to it?
I suspect this might be the problem - you could SET the 11 PCs IP address manually so long as you ensure they are on the same subnet as the DSL router - e.g. if the router's address is 192.168.0.254 then make the PCs 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.12 etc

Solve : wireless connection drops until re-boot?

Answer»

Hi,

Just recently my CONNECTION seems to DROP on an infrequent basis for no apparent reason. I have been connected wirelessly for some time and now all of a sudden I am getting this dropping issue.

In network manager there are no visible wireless networks.

Once I re-boot, I connect immediately.

I noticed on another forum that a Microsoft technician had suggested disabling TCP IPv6, so I did this but the PROBLEM still occurs. I also read about disabling DNS caching, so I tried this but I don't KNOW if this is only for XP since I was denied this when I tried to run the command.

I'm using Vista service pack 1
HP pavillion dv6830us
Wireless router: Nexxt Solutions NW230NXT.

Thanks

Solve : Certain sites don't load?

Answer»

For some reason, certain websites from a specific IP don't load for me. I have 2 computers(WINDOWS Vista desktop and Windws XP laptop) connected to a router. No problem with the desktop. I even used a friend's laptop(also XP) instead of mine and the sites load fine on his computer.

I have tried the following and still can't see these specific sites with my laptop:

- scanned with AVG,
- a trace from the cmd prompt for these sites shows "Request timed out",
- different browsers(explorer, firefox, opera),
- different MTU settings,
- I disabled firewall

Any ideas on how to resolve this please? What browser, version?
Did you try different browser?

Solve : LAN issues?

Answer»

This is kind of a two-part question.

Firstly, when I am running a game over a LAN, any game, it will not let me host. I have yet to find a game which i can host and others can see - I can always connect to other computers, but other computers can never connect to me.

Secondly, with one of my games (Railroad Tycoon II gold) I can only LAN it if i restart my computer (Running Windows XP SP3 but had the issue with SP2 aswell) and then START the game before all the ICONS have even loaded on the screen. None of my mates computers, some with XP (all service packs) and with Vista, and with 98, have this problem. I disabled all the startup programs and its still the same.

Cheers if you can answer any of the above,
BonesIs this is it about games on the INTERNET?

On are you having a LAN party? Maxi mun of four machines on wire Ethernet and two on wireless. Something in you post mad me think that.

Let's suppose that all PCs are in the same room or building for a LAN party. Don't try a LAN party over 300 feet wire or wireless.
If every body is in the same building or nearby, first order of business is to check the cable. Maybe change location. Move the susbect computer to the location of a good machine and move a good machine to the place where the former was. This is a first tep to eliminate the question of environment issues. In some places thesis is a frequent problem. Easy to check out. Drives you crazy if you ignore it.
After that, try some new Network Interface Cards.

Is this of any help? What games? Which network protocol?Do you have a firewall turned on?THANKS for prompt reply.

I have Windows firewall, Windows defender, and avast. Windows firewall is configured to let the games through.

For this example, as they're the two currently INSTALLED, Age of Empires II and Railroad Tycoon II. On a local network, (same room etc), I can connect to other computers hosting the game/s, and we can play, but the other computers cannot find any games I host. Cables fine, no issues with the environment i can see.any more ideas? it's really driving me nuts. Quote from: Bones92 on April 25, 2009, 05:52:19 AM

any more ideas? it's really driving me nuts.
Here is an idea for a form of diagnostic.

Make another partition on the hard drive.
Or just put in another Hard drive.
Install Windows again as a fresh install. load just ONE game. No AV. No other applications. Now set up network again. No Firewall.

Now try it. It will work, unless there is a weird hardware problem with this machine.
If all is good so far, here is the next step.
Now add just one more game. Test.
Another game. Test.
Repeat until it breaks.

Posible cause Suspected :
You find a game the does not treat the network nice. It prevents you from being a host. The game does not want you to host, so it locks out hosting our even for other games.
- OR -
You have an application on the first system that prevents hosting.
You have a system defect on the first system that prevents hosting.
i like that idea, only problem is its a laptop and i can't put in another hdd - plus my existing one is really small, no room for another partition (and I don't have install disks for windows) Quote from: Bones92 on April 25, 2009, 03:30:28 PM
i like that idea, only problem is its a laptop and i can't put in another hdd - plus my existing one is really small, no room for another partition (and I don't have install disks for windows)
I am running out of ideas. Wait, it just came to me.

The idea is to have fun with you peers, -Right?
So present the problem to one of you buddies and get one of them to loan you a mediocre PC that can be used for gaming. One they do not need for anything important. Next you brag about how you can whip them on an older PC. Then load it with just one or two hot games you have wanted to show your mates.

Of course it will work. (You know the cheat codes that only work on the host.)
  fair enough.

Solve : ADDING PRINTER TO A LAN?

Answer»

kindly help me know the basic procedures of
adding or connecting a PRINTER to a
LAN Does you printer have an Ethernet Port on the back of it?

If it doesn't then buy a Printer Server that has support for either Parallel or USB(which ever your printer connects by)Can't the LAN access the printer even if it's plugged into a computer?Yes this is possible, you have to FIRST of course install the printer then goto your NETWORK Connections in Control Panel and add the File & Printer Sharing service after you click properties on the network connection.

Solve : Wireless Print Server and Wireless router?

Answer»

Can you run both a wireless print SERVER and a wireless/modem to gether? Or should I just add a print server to the printer and connect by CABLE to the wireless/modem router? OjasCable is BETTER. Ethernet is 100 Mpbs
About 3 or 4 wireless devices can work in the same area.
Connection SPED may DROP to 11 Mbps

Solve : Over-Complex Network Setup?

Answer»

I have an old LPT printer, and a Netgear LPT Mini Print Server.
Unfortunately, I am too far away to run an ethernet cable... I COULD buy some or get some from the school, but even then I live in an old extremely-hard-to-wire house.

I do have a laptop that connects via. WiFi, which has an unused Ethernet port.

My question is this:
How can I connect the print server device to my LAPTOPS ethernet port, using ICS? Each time I try to do it, it just doesnt work.
I'm doing something wrong, but, I dont know what.

OS I am dealing with is WINDOWS 7 (Same as Vista, networking wise)
100MBPS Broadcom Ethernet

NETGEAR Print Server model PS101

When I plug it all in, the LIGHTS blink orange, but, if I disconnect it and plug it in again, they go back green. I still cant print to it.

Any ideas? (Besides: "Stop being so cheap and refill your USB printers cartridges...) It SOUNDS like, because you aren't using a hub or a switch, you need an ethernet cross-over cable. This is different from a standard ethernet cable as pins don't go "straight through" but cross over on pins 1 3 and 6 IIRC - look up "making cross over cable" in google for plenty of instructions

Cheers

SteveThis sounds like its going to be more complicated than I originally hoped for

What if I plugged an old router into my laptops ethernet while ICS is enabled?
Or would that have the same problem?
Yes if you use it as a hub (i.e. plug the laptop into it AND the other device) then that should be OK

Solve : Shutdown a PC within same workgroup?

Answer»

Dear

I want to shutdown/restart my user's PC who are within the network. I can access into their PC by "Remote Desktop Connection" wizard of Windows XP. To do so, first I log into their PC and follow run->cmd->then Add user's PC by their IP/computer name within their PC, then it does work.

But can't shutdown/restart from my PC by following the above procedure i.e. run->cmd->Adding user's PC by their IP.

Please help.

Why are you wanting to do this?

Dear

As I am the Administrator of my official network, I need to do that due to resolve my user's difficulties.

Please come back.

Regards
talorababuWe don't understand. If you are the administrator then you were the one who setup the shutdown procedure on all the PCs to began with. You have a policy that determines if and how any PC on the network will shutdown.

If you are using server 2003 you need to review the documentation about remote shutdown. It is not the same as for all XP PCs in a SIMPLE network.

But if any PC has had an extreme hardware or software failure, nobody can service it by remote access. It has to be physically SERVICED by a technician.
Dear

Thanks for your come back.

Yes, you are correct that I should have made the shutdown policy of my user who are using mostly windows XP and I also.

But my confusion is that, when I logged into user's PC by using "Remote Desktop Connection" wizard of windows XP, I can have entrance into their PC and can shutdown/restart by following the steps run->cmd->shutdown -i >then add user's PC by their IP or computer name->then select shutdown or restart and it does work.

But my dear, I don't want to get entrance into user's PC by using "Remote Desktop Connection" wizard. SIMPLY, from my PC (I USE windows XP), I want to follow the above mentioned procedure that is, run->cmd->shutdown -i >then will add user's PC by their IP or computer name and will select shutdown or resrart and their PC will shut-off or restart. I SAW a demonstration in youtube but can't do yet.

Please help.

Yes, that is the right method. But there is also a policy that prevents it.The shutdown is a security issue. You will have to control the policy on that particular PC.

But.... This is another possibility. Read this:

Solve : Help me! I'm new to this!?

Answer»

I am planning on buying a dell laptop soon and i wanted it to be wireless. Currently at my house I have three computers all networked together but with a cable connection. I still want to keep the three computers, but in my room i dont want cables hooked up to my laptop. How do I go about making the laptop wireless?? I have recently heard stuff about routers and maybe they could help?? Any help WOULD be much appreciated as do not know much about this stuff! - PeaceWelcom to the Forum.
There a re a lot of people here to help you.
The first question is: How fast is your current Internet Service?
In general, the best solution is to use a quality router that has the modem and wireless built in.
I would suggst one of the units made by a company called "2-Wire" for a good unit at a resonalbe price.
However, don't go buy anything until you find out what your service provider normally uses for a wireless router.
Im still trying to get my head around routers. If I have a cable internet connection in the room NEXT to me and I plug a wireless router into that connection, will that send signals to my laptop without it requiring any cables??? Your Cale modem has more that just one Ethernet connection. Four connections, -Right?
Yes, plug in a wireless router to the modem and it will send the signal to any n laptop with 802 dot 11 wireless. In that case a suitable router might be one of the Net gear models.
Can you try this?
start > Run > CMD [enter]
then al the prompt type:
ipconfig /all

You might see something like this:
Code: [Select] DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : gateway.2wire.net

Solve : network printer help?

hi all...am facing a problem at work. there is this certain pc which is on the domain. it has windows xp installed just like the rest of the pcs on the domain. but this particular pc cannot scan through a network xerox workcentre 24 PCL for some reason. i created a mailbox in the copier and gave a username and password. on the machine i installed the scanning utility. after installing i rebooted, then opened the utility, it said searching for printers/scanners on the network.....after that it successfully recognized the all in one xerox machine. the utility asked me to provide the username and password for the mailbox i had created in the machine, so i did. after that...it just says connection lost. i can access that mailbox from my pc, or any other pc for that matter except this particular pc. i can ping to and from this machine. i can access this machine's shared folders, i can print to the copier from this same machine as well...but for some reason, i just CANNOT scan. i have tried everything i know..the firewall is turned off as well...PLEASE HELP!Hello
CHECK the permissions on th email box in the pc. It might be the admin has rights. What is different about this machine?
Does it show any other odd behavior?
Is it very far from the router?
Does it use the same AV programs the other do?
Does it have the current updates?
Is the PC newer or older that the rest?
Different make?
What if you create a new user account with Administrator permissions and re INSTALL the whole network stuff ib the new account?

Is this a business network?
rie you user 2003 server for the domain?
Is there only one router for the whole Local Network?
Is any part of the Network wireless instead of wired Ethernet?
Do you have a spare Ethernet card to TRY?
Spare cable?
Would it be possible to move this PC to another location?
Or, does mother computer perform good in the same location?

the whole network is wired..there is no wireless yet...the domain has win 2003 server..n the machine does not show any odd behavior...to be honest..its really not possible to move this pc to another location..the AV program is also the same .the pc cant access the scanner even if an admin is logged in..checked the permissions as well..there is nothing that would deny a user to access his/her mailbox nor does it deny the machine itself to access the mailbox. all the pcs are the same..there is no difference..they all have the same os. even the apps are the same. at first i THOUGHT that giving the pc a static ip would resolve the problem but no luck in that either. i have one more thing to try...n i would like ur opinions..if i logged into his pc as a domain admin..do u think it would make a difference?..am currently at a different office in a different state..so havent gotten a chance to try that out yet..but what do u guys think?? thanks...

Solve : wirless problems?

Answer»

Hey sorry to bother... but i am at a loss and my provider is not helping.

I have just moved over to wireless internet. I found it kept disconnecting. with o2 broadband you get an ASSISTANT that pops up when it disconnects and tries to fix the error. i found it would disconnect and the assistant would fix it but this happened every 15 mins so i rung them and they did pieces to resolve it.

now my internet keeps disconnecting, well when i say it disconnects its weird.. the assistant opens and says that internet explorer has disconnected. and it tries to fix it but with no luck. what i find weird is when this happens applications such as msn continue to work as normal and file downloads continue but all web pages come up page cannot be displayed and the assistant tells me there is an error.

now i have found if i reset my LAPTOP that when it reboots i am back on the internet but as U can imagine this is bloody annoying... does anyone have any idea what the i can do to fix it

thanks in advance

windows vista
internet exploer version 8 Have you tried it non wirelessly to see if the problem is with the wireless connection to the router or the ACTUAL connection to the Internet?
Depending on which wireless router you have then if you logon to the routers management feature you can see from its log when and if the Internet connection is dropping...u mean connect it using the ethernet cable?

I dont know how to get that info from my router !Ye sI mean connect it to the router using the ethernet cable. Then if it still happens you know its the router/internet connection NOT the wireless setup.
Tell me which router it is and I'll tell you how to get onto the management feature (or TRY!)

Solve : Windows98 Wireless configuration?

Answer»

Anyone around here know how to make Win98 detect your own Wireless access point?

I have an OLD laptop with an 802.11/b PCMCIA card installed, but I cannot figure out how to make Win98 detect my wireless access point.

Using the set-up wizard yesterday, I was able to make Win98 connect to the Internet through the wireless card, but I have no idea what/who's access point it used. When typing IPCONIFG at the command prompt, while connected to the internet, it said my default gateway was 192.168.0.1, while MY default gateway address is 192.168.1.254.
Hello
When u state WAP do u mean an access point or a wireless router. I know some people have itold me " I have WAP" , when truely it was a wireless router. IF u have a access point that is connect to a router make sure it is set to a static IP on the WAP. IF it is a wireless router set to DHCP. The laptop and the card are WORKING FINE so we can eliminate both devices. It seems u did not configure something right in either the WAP or router. U post two gateways. I can only assume ONE is for the router and the other for the WAP. Check your setting again, SSID, channel, your Ethernet connection to the WAP. Try setting the gateway of the WAP to the router default. Let us know what happens. Maybe he is on his next door neighbors D-Link wireless.Well I finally got connected to my Access Point (AT&T 2Wire Gateway). The problem I believe (I may be wrong) was that by using Internet Connecton Wizard, it selected the first available access point it found, instead of my dad's, because I had not configured it to do otherwise.

I was able to locate some configuration options for the Wireless Card to remedy that, here: START>settings>control panel>network>Wireless Card>Properties> advanced tab............It seems I am suppose to manually TYPE in my SSID and "Network Type", in which I selected "Access Point" (not "peer to peer", which was the only other option). In a nut shell, I hadn't realized that Wireless Zero Configuration isn't available in Win98.. I guess WinXP spoiled me

EDIT: I am face with the problem, however, that i cannot connect to my access point while the security is enabled. I cannot seem to find the interface in Win98 where I can enter a password to utilize my Wireless security.

The 2-wire brand gateway, as you know, has a password that you must use if you have WEB enabled. Don't feel bad, even Windows XP has problems with the security feature. You have to have the right drivers to make it work right in either case. I forgot to mention that if anyone runs into the problem where they are performing some type of installation in Win98 and are prompted for the installation disk and you don't have it, you might try directing Windows to C:\Windows\Options\cabs when prompted to select and alternate location for the files. Apparently it worked for me because I don't have the installation disk and that's what I did.

edit: sorry, not when doing just anykind of installation, only if you are configuring your wireless card, that file path may be used if you don't have the disk.

Solve : Sharing a printer on a simple network?

Answer»

I have a simple setup.Wireless enabled Dell Laptop and Dell desktop with adapter. The desktop is connected to an Epson printer(photo 870) by parallel printer cable. The router is Netgear DG834G v4 .The first thing was to get both computers sharing broadband. This works fine.

I now wish to move on and need help.

First I would likeboth computers to share the printer. From Google I get conflicting views. First that I need a wireless enabled printer.Second that provided the Dell desktop (and printer)is left switched on it will be possible to share the printer . The second option is the ONE I wish to pursue.

Second I wish to to be able to move files between computers on my network.I have not been able to crack the documentation on this . Can anyone help ?

The Desktop OS is win 98SE,the laptop OS is Vista.

Thanks

VeblenIf the Vista and 98 machines can share folders they can also share printers, in most cases. You need to run the network wizard on both machines and pay attention to the questions. Bither computers on on a home network. Bother computers will have file and printer sharing.
On the Win 98 machine make a shaded folder inside of My Documents. Call it 'Share Docs" or something like that. Run sharing on for that folder.
The vista computer also has some way to turn on sharing. And make sure there is a shard folder and that it does have sharing on.
Once the two computers "See" each other in the Network, you will be able to share the printer. Afain, you have to set sharing on the printer.
You need to use the most simple form of network sharing to use Vista and Win98 together. Win 98 does not have all the extra sstuff.

Here is a link that may help some, but if it is too much, come back here please.
http://www.crn.com/white-box/59201759

Many thanks for prompt and helpful message.

I think the win 98 PC 's config is OK. I followed up by looking at the link you gave and feel I'm OK so far as win 98 is concerned.

Vista however is a new OS for me - I've only had it a couple of weeks and haven't really got the hang of it yet.I got to the point where I was asked to "add a printer". Then I was taken into the whole process of installing a printer (request to use original Printer installation disk to set up drivers etc !) At this point I stopped. It looked as if I was being asked to add printer to the laptop instead of identifying the existing printer (cabled to the desktop) as a shared printer. I'm going to look at this again but I'm not too hopeful.

If you have any further thoughts on this I would appreciate having them.

Meanwhile my thanks .

VeblenYou've done things in the wrong order on this step.
You need first enable sharing of the printer on your desktop machine (which is connected directly to the printer) before associating the laptop with the printer VIA the desktop.
I'm not sure how to do this on Vista so I've pasted some info from the windows help site on this. I hope this is what you are looking for:

To share a printer attached to your computer

1.
Open Network and Sharing Center by clicking the START button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, and then clicking Network and Sharing Center.

2.
Click the arrow button Picture of the arrow button next to Printer sharing to expand the section, click Turn on printer sharing, and then click Apply. Your printer is now shared on the network. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

3.
If you are using a computer connected to a workgroup, click the arrow button Picture of the arrow button next to Password protected sharing to expand this section, and then check to see if password-protected sharing is turned on or off. If it is turned on, only people with a user account and password for this computer will be able to access your printer. Turn this off if you want anyone on the network to be able to access the printer you are sharing. To change this setting, select the option you prefer, and then click Apply. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Hi
I followed the steps you described.Seemed OK.

But when I come to print from the laptop the selection of printers offered does not include the printer(which I specified for "sharing") attached to my desktop.

I shall look through Vista's Help --- there is a lot of it ! -- and hopefully find something to help me. I think I'm near to having a solution.

Thanks again.

You add a network printer on the laptop. This has to be done one time so the laptop can have the proper drivers for the network printer. Adter that, the network printer will be a selection or the default. Thanks
I'll try that
VeblenTook me a while to find installation disk.Vista didn't like it but finally installed it(?).
While it went through the motions of printing no printing actually resulted.

After poking about a bit I found the "printed" files in folder on the laptop. Also found out that not all of the printers drivers' features are (eg print preview)available. Also got a screen message (Vista help) indicating that the file to run the printer's help files is not in vista but it lookas as if a third party workaround is available.

Also should have mentioned an error while installing("error 0x8036006e") !

I'm going to pause and rethink this project. Vista had a huge list of Epson printers which it supported . I should have been SUSPICIOUS that mine (Epson Stylus Photo 870) was not on its list.

Also I am not clear to what extent the problems I am having has to do with Vista or with the networking features. Also I must double check that the sharing feature is OK on the Windows 98 PC

It is disappointing to have got so close.

Veblen

I setup all of our PC's (xp pro os) to access our linksys router WRT54gs to get an IP address automatically through the DHCP server and have set the range on the dhcp server to fall between 192.168.1.101 through 150. This will work fine for awhile then like last night all of the ip address issued were out of range such as 169.254.27.3. Then the only way I can get the pc's to get a proper address is to hard code the address into the properties of the TCP/IP setting in the network connections properties dialog box. So any ideas as to what is up?
Wired or wireless connections?

A 169.x.x.x address means the machines can't find, or are not responding to the DHCP server, as you must have surmised. Windows assigns one of its own (APIPA).

What happens if you use the

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

command(s) at the prompt on one of the machines?

Have you checked the DHCP lease period and idle timer on the router (the latter is only relevant for wireless connections)?

Have you gone into the DEVICE properties for each NIC and made sure that Power settings are configured so that the NICs aren't allowed to switch off to save power?
Brundle Thanks for replying.

All of the offending pc's are wired.

When using ipconfig /release it will release the ip and then if you try to ipconfig /renew it goes back to a 169.x.x.x configuration.
It seems that the DHCP server works for awhile and then quits.

lease period is 1440 min or 24 hr

The nic power properties are not set to switch off.

These are all great ideas unfortunately none seem to be the problem, maybe we have an intermittent problem DHCP server.

Is there any way to CHECK the DHCP server, to see if it responds consistently.Given that all machines lose their IP address at the same time, the router appears to be the problem but it's worth disconnecting all but one machine and seeing if the same PROBLEMS occur.

Monitor the remaining NIC with Wireshark - if you issue an ipconfig /renew command you should see 255.255.255.255 Discovery broadcasts from the client looking for a DHCP server, then a unicast back from the server with a DHCP Offer (the first two of the 5 message types used in DHCP). That would be a starting point. If things seem to improve, add another machine and KEEP monitoring the DHCP messages. Ideally you want it to break while you're monitoring to see what's actually happening - if things improve with only one machine connected, start adding more.

Worth checking the DHCP Client service is running on all machines too. Quote from: mikeydat5111 on April 07, 2009, 11:44:02 AM

routers seem to do that...unplug the router, count to 10 then plug it back in...should solve it...good LuckThank you fgdn17 for your input, it turned out to be the simple solution, to my IP problem.

In the future I will move re-booting the router, to the beginning of the to do list when trying to solve out of range ip's problems with the router.

Thanks for coming back with answer...why didn't I think of that.... Thanks Brundle for your interest and input, I guess we all get to learn from KEEPING it simple.

If routers periodically lose their way in the DHCP server world does anyone have an idea as to why this is happening. The router and the switches are all protected with a fairly robust UPS. Other than starting the day with a visit to the router and turning it off and then on is there any thing one could do to keep this from happening?

How do I SET up the computer thru the wireless router to get secured internet service ? I have the computer up and running on the internet but it says I am not PROTECTED. Also should I be running public or private network sharing?

Thanks
AggieHello Aggie
When setting up your wireless network u should use WPA setting for a secure connection, also u can CHOOSE not to boardcast your SSID, wireless network name. Your router is saying your not protected, or your computer?

If its your computer:
Its saying your not protected since you dont have Firewall or Antivirus enabled.. or both.

Its fine to broadcast SSID, since anyone intending to hack you will just use a WiFi "sniffer" that will pull up the ID, which is broadcast by any computer connected to it... What Zylstra states is true, but it really doesn't hurt anything. It will just keep your SSID not showing within the wireless network RANGE. The router u brought came with a CD or just go to the website of the router and download the instruction manual. It should should have instructions on setting a WPA/WPA2 secure network. Also follow Zylstra ADVISE on the computer: update OS, firewall and anti virus. Thanks to all who replied to the question. I am up and running fine now. I have another questioned that I will post.

Again, thanks to all for the help.

Solve : printing disconnects wireless internet?

Answer»

My laptop (Vista) is connected to wireless internet via a linksys wireless router. I just got a new HP printer which also connects WIRELESSLY to the laptop. When I print something the laptop disconnects from the internet. I WOULD like to be able to be connected to both simultaneously.

Also when I get DISCONNECTED Internet Explorer get set to "work offline." I can go into tools and change this but it is a hassle to do it every time I need to print.check to see if u have a IP address conflict. Quote from: midsail on April 10, 2009, 03:02:58 PM

Solve : PC to Pc Dsl Connection need help?

hello there,

i have dsl ,my dsl provider has assigned me ip(172.16.14.142) and dns 172.16.14.1 which i have to put in tcp/ip setting now i want to use the same dsl connection on other PC but i couldnt figure it out . i have made cross cable connection set everything as mention on most of the tutorials on the internet available .

the main lan card of my pc is having the ip in the tcp/ip and the other lancard from which cross cable wire is going out to other pc what tcp/ip should i give it ?

and how can i solve this IP problem please help me in this thanks waiting for reply
The secondary LAN card you leave on automatic.
First, get the two PCs to 'see' each other.

After that, build a 'bridge' between the two LAN cards.
In network connections select LAN Card, right click and it should
shoe an OPTION for a bridge.

Oops. my cable is disconnected. Gotta fix that.First, get the two PCs to 'see' each other.

this part is CONFUSING me. WOT i did to see each other is i have put on secondary lan card setting tcp/ip 192.168.0.1 and dns 192.168.0.2

and on the pc tcp setting ip 192.168.0.2 and dns 192.168.0.1

i have made sharing on on my real pc

but couldnt see my pc on new one so can you please help me out one thing more .

when i ping my old pc from the new one like ip address

ping 172.16.14.142 -t in run box

its shows that its working but when i try to ping server ip 172.16.14.1

its says request time out. Quote

For home networking we have not done static IP for years. Did your provider tell you to use those settings? Is this a VPN
Anyway, the second machine does not have to do any of that. It gets stuff from the first machine as a "share". With a crossover cable both machines should see each other in the network neighborhood without the need to ping each other.
But if they can not ping each other there is a hardware fault.ok i tried and this is what is happened .

when i leave the the secondary lan card on auto and also leave the new pc lan card on auto and this is what i have recieving

and when i try to bridge the connection this is what i have recieved

no its not vpn . evey pc in my network cable has assigned an ip address

so first i tried with 8 switch . i just have to change the mac address of other pc but what happened in that if one pc is browsing other pc internet does not works . but both computer in in network so my friend told me to do lan to lan sharing network .

so is there any way i can share my same net with other pc ? waiting for reply thanksWouldn't it just be easier to get a router and hook both PC's up thru it?i did try by using switch i have 8 pin of switch but in that if one pc is browsing and using internet other pc will be off means it can not browse internet both pc cant use net at the same time.I am talking about a router like in the below link. You hook it to your modem and then hook the PC's into it. Once correctly hooked up every pc should be able to use the internet and even see each other.

Solve : not your ordinary LAN connection problem (i think)?

Answer»

Our router was doing GREAT until recently. For some unknown reason, LAN connection is not working.BUT, the weird thing is, the internet connection does. What's weird about this is that the internet connection throughout the PCS (3 of them) is connected through LAN. The LAN suddenly went out. My problem is now, how come the LAN connection suddenly got lost? (We are all using windows XP).

Can this be some sort of malware problem? Thanks.

Try unplugging the cable and plug it again. What HAPPENED now? What are you using as your access point? for example a WIRELESS router... or?

Solve : Need Big Help!; Bandwidth Usage - (Download Usage)?

Answer»

I PLAY the online first PERSON shooter game called Counter-Strike; I downloaded a bandwidth meter; and it was saying I use like 100 MB per 10 Minutes just playing CS. I was like What the..? So I was playing around with it and trying to figure what was going wrong. Is it normal to go through 100 MB in ten minutes by just playing CS online for 10 minutes?I'm mainly into more TECHNICAL computing such as hacking and coding, not so much of a GAMING person. I've also never played CS but I do know that since it's a live game across the net it would use most if not all your bandwidth.

It would use a lot, although 100MB seems a lot. You would have to have an extremely fast internet connection and be playing full on to use 100MB in 10 minutes. I would be more inclined to say 10MB in 10 minutes.

You must also take into account that Bandwidth Meter's etc can be very inaccurate.
I'm not an expert on the subject so don't quote me on this, Hope this helps.

Solve : HELP!IF I HAVE BROADBAND AND THEN BUY A ROOTER CAN I GET WIRELESS??

Answer» HI there! We are 3 girls who recently signed up for Virgin Broadband which involves one of us connecting our laptop to a modem via the ether cable. The problem is that we infact NEED wireless to enable us to all work on the internet at the same time. I spoke to Virgin and they said they do not set up or provide wireless but that if we just buy a rooter and plug the ether cable in to the rooter wireless will be available. My parents had an old rooter they used to use with aol so they gave this to us and when we plugged it in my laptop said it was connected to 'the parkins'(my family's name) but there was no connectivity. Do we need to do something to the rooter to allow us to use it now with virgin? Or do we need to buy our own new rooter? and if we do, will it be simple to set up?

Thanks so much!

ANNA Dear Anna,

First thing I must say is that it's "Ethernet" not "Ether" and it's "Router" not "Rooter".

Indeed you will need a wireless Router. The most likely reason you can't connect to the "old" router is that it's on a different channel to your laptop's wireless card.
You will need to buy a wireless router to match your laptop. Most recent computer's have G or B channels. I'm not exactly sure how to find out what channel you computer is. Most likely it will be included in the documentation that came with your laptop.

Router's are simple to set up, you must first set your modem into "bridge mode".
Your best bet would probably be to ring the manufacturer of your modem and ask them how to put it in bridge mode. Then ring your Router's manufacturer and ask how to set it up. Since you are inexperienced in computer's (WELL with routers etc) It would probably be hard for you to understand if SOMEONE walked you through it on here, would take a long time.

Sorry this probably isn't much help, wait for someone else to reply as they might know more than me.

Solve : Connecting wireless adapter?

Answer»

I'm trying to connect this network adapter:
http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=DGL%2D3420

to my desktop Win XP computer.

When I PLUG into my ethernet port it's not recognizing it as a wireless device. I followed the instructions on the site "How do I use my D-Link wireless utility in Windows XP?" But that didn't WORK.

Any suggestions? It is not supposed to be detected as a wireless device as far I can see (cant imagine how that would work either since it's connected to the Ethernet port).

Have you read the Quick install GUIDE or the manual available from the link you posted? It describes what you need to do.
(Couldn't copy from the pdf so here's an image.)

Yes i have read the manual, and I've followed the steps in the quick install guide.Well then it would help tremendously if you told us what exactly isn't working...

Can you connect to the device as described in Hardware installation section of the Quick install guide for example?
Have you also noted that on the link you provided...there is also a Firmware upgrade for that device dated 4/30/2007?

You may want to check to see if the device you are trying to install is using the current firmware...or not...call it a hunch...When I connect the device to my pc and type 192.168.0.30 it's unable to access the device. So I can't even do a firmware UPDATE or configure the device.Have you tried resetting the device?Yes I have reset it several times with no luck.Then...my advice to you...if this was a new purchase...would be to contact D-Link support to let them know you are experiencing issues with their device...and tell them the procedures you have followed to coorect the issue...

Again...that's your best bet...Thanks for the help, the device must be bad. I haven't used it in AWHILE. The last time I used it was with an xbox and not a pc.How old is it? Have you tried it back on the xBox...to see if it still functions with it?One thing... are you PC configured with an IP in the 192.168.0.xxx range? If not this is why you can't access the device.

You can check your PCs current IP by opening a command prompt and typing ipconfig.Well, I don't think so. My router is 192.168.1.1

Oh, and I don't have the xbox anymore. Then you need to change the IP on your computer to something in 192.168.0.xxx range. Then you should be able to access the device.

Solve : Setting up a Windows 2003 Server Network?

Answer»

Hi, I'm new to networking, and I need some help. I go to a Technical School, and I'm in the computer class. I'm towards the end of the class, and it's now become my job to administrate the network. The last people who did it didn't do a very good job. They had roaming profiles setup, and it took 30+ minutes to logon and logoff. They also messed up while trying to create a backup. It would download a 70+ GB .tmp file to each client and fill up the hard drive with a useless file. :/

That's why I've decided to completely redo everything. I know how to setup user accounts, that's really easy, but I'm not sure how to do it while not effecting the big picture.

I want to setup:

1. Internet Connection Sharing - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324286
2. Map A Network Drive - http://www.cae.wisc.edu/site/public/?title=nt4netuse
3. Change the Rights and Permissions of all the Clients through Group Policy. (No games!)

The problem with #1 is the administrator of the entire school has a proxy setup and the Microsoft web page says, "Do not use ICS on a network that: Uses static IP ADDRESSES, Has a Windows Server 2003 domain controller". Each person in our class needs a user account on our server, but at the same time I want keep access to the Internet. How can I do this?

The problem with #2 and #3 are I'm not sure how to do them. In High School, they had Novell installed on all their computers. Each computer had an H:\ (Networked Drive) where students could store their work on the server. They had access to H:\ from every computer in the school, but they could only see and edit their files though every student could see and use the drive. Can I do something like this just using the OS? Also, how do I change the rights of all the users using group policy from the server level?

Here are the specs:

22 Clients:
Core 2 DUO - 1.8 GHz
2GB RAM
Windows Vista Ultimate
Gigabit Ethernet

2 Servers:
Pentium D - 3.0 GHz
1GB RAM
Windows Server 2003 SP2
Gigabit Ethernet
* The backup server has a tape drive and the main server has dual Network Interface Cards.1. I don't understand the part with "administrator of the entire school has a proxy setup". Which administrator? The network administrator installed a proxy on one server and everyone that wants internet access should use the proxy? In that case he made a network map, and each subnetwork has it's own address. Also, routing is enabled between school's routers, I suppose each ROUTER knows about the other parts of network in that school. If you don't want to affect "the big picture" you will have to talk with school's network administrator.
Anyway, if you want to setup ICS it is very simple. You may use ICS on a network that uses static IP addresses, but you will have a few problems:
- DNS servers - I never managed to setup properly ICs, so that the clients would use as DNS server the server, that means 192.168.0.1
- I always had to assign static IPs to the clients (in the 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.254 interval), and I had to manually specify DNS address and gateway address; in the Microsoft documentation it is said that it should work smoothly without human intervention, but guess what? They lie I have never been able to obtain what they say. But maybe I was doing something WRONG.
2. mapped network drive - create a share for each student (in a script, when the account is created the script is executed => the folder is automatically made; also, you may need a script that it is USED when someone log's in, in which you will place the commands to create the network mapping.
3. You need a book. I need a book. Experience comes with reading and exercising. I could only guess what you have in mind. But we (me and you) don't have that time. Quote

I don't understand the part with "administrator of the entire school has a proxy setup". Which administrator? The network administrator installed a proxy on one server and everyone that wants internet access should use the proxy? In that case he made a network map, and each subnetwork has it's own address. The IT guy hired by the school has a network which has Internet access. Our network is seperate and doesn't have Internet access. I want to connect our classroom network to his network and have user accounts plus Internet access. To access the Internet on his network we have to type in "ttcmserver port 8080" into Internet Explorer's Connection Settings. I setup ICS said today, but I'm not sure how to do map the Network Drive.

I typed in:

echo off
net use z: "\\server2\C:\Shared CIT Folder"

into a login.bat file and I put it in windows/sysvol/sysvol/cit.local/scripts but it doesn't work. What am I doing wrong?1) The users have read access to the folder with the script? (I am not sure about that thing, better check what I am saying here about read acces) They have necessary rights to access that share?
2) The users can't access the C: specified by your script. The C: partition is on their harddisk, not on server harddisk; and definitely it's not a share. C: can be shared though, and you can find it shared as "administrative share" on many computers. If you want them to use a share (network map), you have to correctly specify the share. I suppose you want to say \\server2\c$\shared cit folder", but I have to WARN you about using ADMINISTRATIVE shares with REGULAR USER ACCOUNTS.
Administrative sharing = lot of responsability for you.

Solve : how to secure my network wireless internet?

Answer»

I have a BEFSR41 etherent dsl/cable router linksys. EVERYTIME I go to 198.162.1.1 it leads to the linksys router page and there aren't any wireless security like the WPA or WEP encryption. I also have a WMP55AG ACCESS point linksys along with my BEFSR41. I TRIED DIFFERENT forums and some say I need to have my LAN ip set differently from the each other, while others say I need to replace the BEFSR41.

When I first installed it, some guy did it for me and he set it up so it was secure. I had to reset everything because I had forgotten it and now I can't secure my network. Can someone help?If this is your router (HTTP://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1122062340941&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper)
than it is a "wired" router. It does not have anything to do with WEP or WPA.
WMP55AG is a wireless network adapter and not a wireless access point (like linksys WAP55AG, for example). It is installed in your computer, and to access the network you also need a wireless access point or a wireless router. Do you have any?

Solve : XP won't share folders anymore?

Answer»

Every time I share a folder on this computer, it is not accessible by any other computer on my network, Linux or windows. The workgroup is correct, FILE and print sharing set up, in FACT the printer attached to this computer is shared and other computer can print to it.

This computer can see a share on another XP computer, but that computer isn't able to get to the share on this one. It will see the share but when you try to enter it, it just gives an error, "network path not found".

Any ideas?Disable (for testing) the FIREWALL on the computer with the shares and see if it works without firewall.Disabled the Windows XP SP2 firewall on this computer, Linux still could not access any share on this computer. I have a hardware firewall that I built, but that WOULD not do anything with the traffic within my network, only external (internet) traffic.Maybe a service on XP machine needs to be restarted? Workstation, server, maybe other service (I am thinking at the "server" service but others could hinder too).
Maybe a too restrictive rule in the Local Security has been added/modified?Services look OK to me, the only security rule that wouldhave anything to do wiht it is that I disabled my LMHASH for security reasons.....I knew 98 and such needed it, but I didn't think XP or Linux did, but I enabled it again, rebooted, set up a new password, rebooted......that created an LMHASH of my current password, and still no computers on ym network can get to my shares

In Internet Explorer, when you CHOOSE "Save as..." you may change the destination folder.
I Mozilla Firefox you download to a single location and from there you will move the files to their right destination folders.Perhaps a batch file could do what you request........ i am not sure but i belive it can be done with this method....

The LAN connection (shown through main PC1) ends 0.100 and the standard gateway 0.1, also I am not on PPPoE but dynamical assigned IP address from the provider.

Whilst opening the 2nd PC in the network on the main PC, the error message "communication with the 2nd PC is not possible" occurs. The network DIAGNOSIS sent a ping-signal to the remote host but didnt receive an answer. Internet works on PC2 though through the wireless connection and Zonealarm firewall on PC2 is set to accept the IP address on PC1.

On the main PC under 'ipconfig' there are 4 tunnel adapter LAN-connections Whilst the local connection IPv6 -address is filled in, DNS-suffix and standard gateway arent. I have no idea what this concerns.

I can only think that Windows Live OneCare is having some bad influence with the connections on the main PC as I cannot set the IP address of PC2 to be set in the firewall. But OneCare shouldnt cause a problem, because I am trying to access PC2 from PC1 (pinging OUT shouldnt be a problem?)

I have also read that on the Vista machine I have to make sure the LAN connection is set to "Private". What does that mean, because my LAN status is set to IPv4 connectivity "internet" and IPv6 connectivity "local" are there no network specialists out there....

* CLOSED *

I HAVE THE INTERNET CONNECTION GOING NOW - PLEASE READ FROM MY NEXT POST BELOW.
(occasional disconnection)First thing I would do is run this command on all computers.

ipconfig /release

and then run this one

ipconfig /renew

Your router has to be assigning IP addresses via DHCP though. What this will do is release all information pertaining to DHCP and then reassign it all. Hope that helps a little bit.Try disabling all your firewalls temporarily... does that change anything? Finally I SOMEHOW got the wireless network working by manually setting the ip address on the host PC etc.

Now the only problem I have left, is that the internet connection keeps on cutting off after several minutes and then comes back again after about 10 seconds. I thought at first it would be the other PC taking bandwith away, but I cant get in the internet (browser) on that other PC (I dont need it there anyway).

The reason why I think the internet connection keeps on dropping is because the ip goes through the router via standard gateway. So it isnt REALLY a direct ip connection to the provider. Otherwise it could be a not well enough defined setting in the router configuration panel?

How about fine-tuning the DNS or the buffer... I saw those settings on the advanced tab in the LAN connection properties (Network configuration). Also I noticed that the RPC-service is blank in the lower 'Client for Microsoft Network' option - dont know if this means anything, as there one can select 'Windows Locator' or 'DCE-Cell' in the drop-down bar. There are some fine configuration settings in the router browser available... False. I have no idea for those disconections, but it is not what you said about IP "goes through the router". I don't know about that setting for disconecting after a idle period of TIME, you'd better check (both on conection settings on your computer, and also on your router).

You don't get disconections because of DNS or buffer. I have no idea about that RPC-service.
(Someone better prepared on the subject please? 'Elp!!!) viking

Well seeing as you know what I am talking about you already seem to be very experienced

I checked in the router browser the modem settings and yes, it was set to 30min idle time. But seeing as the check box "Backup dial-up modem when the broadband connection is not working" wasnt activated, it shouldnt have any effect. Anyhow I'll try this and get back to you if it doesnt work.

I dont know where I should find the time out settings on my computer?OK I did that, but the internet connection still drops from time to time. Here's what else I did:

- tried to set the dynamical ip to static and inserted the actual ip address in the router settings. But the LAN IP settings (TCP/IPv6) wouldnt accept the same ip address and had to change back to dynamical (Error message: The inserted network address is invalid)

I searched again in the router browser "Advanced settings":
Dynamic Routing - Dynamic settings:
send: is on disable (options available are RIP1, RIP1 compatible or RIP2)
receive: is on disable (options available are RIP1 only, RIP2 only or both RIP1/RIP2)

Modem settings:
Is set to 115200bps (28.8k/33/6k/56k modem or ISDN TA) - should I change to the lower 57600 bps settings (14.4k/28.8k)?
I have a cable connection of 4000 (hispeed download speed I suppose, so not ISDN)
Otherwise maybe the settings are set too low and should go to the higher modem settings?

I have no idea if I am on the right track here....

No, don't play with dynamic routing section of your router; those settings are ok (disable on send/receive RIP packets). RIP is used to create a network map common to all routers inside a small (but not so small) network, with at least a few network adresses and at least 2 routers, so each router would know where to send data for a certain part of the network.

Modem settings: connection to your ISP is through: a) phone cable, b) tv cable, c) ethernet cat5e cable, d) fiber optic cable?
I really don't think that a) or c) are true (but you know better and for sure , so please tell us). I don't think you are using an ISDN WAN connection. My assumptions is that your are using an ADSL connection (through tv cable) or fiber optic.
Anyway, it does not have anything to do with those interruptions. There is something else.I have a cable connection on a hispeed 'tv' connection, not ADSL nor ISDN (those are on analog copper WIRES, like the telephone, or slower ISDN-fibre wires)

I have actually just moved my wireless telefone into another room - that may have had some influence.

EDIT: Nope, unfortunately the internet connection still occasionally has a signal loss - then comes back again after a few seconds.
I think the problem is local because if I do a direct connection to the provider without the router then the connection is normal ! (no weak signal)
Is there not some kinda freeware log-program to track (not measure) the signal strength and find out the cause?
