Solve : Certain programs connecting and others not.?

Answer»

A few days ago I have a very annoying virus.. security systems 2009.. or something along those lines. Anywho, after a day or 2 or fiddling i finally GOT rid of it and UPDATED my internet security, am now running panda 2009. But the problem I am experiencing now is that a few programs will not connect online, while others will. me IE and Firefox connect fine, windows messenger will connect fine.. Even my world or warcraft will, though the game launcher no longer can connect to the new server.. but the game runs fine.. Also things like YAHOO messenger.. even when i tried to submit request to hp using the build in program it wouldn't connect to the internet to send the message.

The main ERROR I'm getting with messenger is a connection problem error.. also when i tried to re install messenger i received an error when running the installer about not being able to to connect online to get the files for install..

I know this is kind of long,, but hopefully someone will have some advice or maybe experienced something along these lines as well. Thanks in advance.

Solve : how to connect two wireless router??

Answer»

the first wireless router is connected in the telephone line and the other wireless is located in second floor ..
the signal of the wireless can be detected in the second floor if im using a laptop but i want also to use the net from my desktop in my room instead of using a wireless card ill use cabling.
i dont want to use cable to connect the two router because it takes more than a hundred meters if ill pass through the corners..
are the possible way to connect the two wireless router without using a WIRE to bind them together? pls help me a rookie in networking here.. thanks.. more power! The first wireless router is the ONE receiving the the feed from the ISP? IF it has a web browser interface print the infor. Compare the infor with the one on the second floor. One more ? Does the the desktop had a wireless card/ antenna?. Make sure the setting r the same on both routers. Let us known. the desktop doesnt have any wireless device... just want to mix up the wireless lan and wired LAN..
my two router are linksys wrh54g. are there a POSIBLE way that i can convert one of the router as an ACCESS Point? Not sure exactly what you're asking..... However, I KNOW that you can add a wireless antenna to your Desktop computer in order for it to have wireless capability.

i just dont know how too connect two wireless router in each other..
Does my linksys home router 54g can be convetred as Access Point?Yes.either one can be a AP. U just have to configure it. Remember both r wireless. U have to assign a SSID, password. I would make sure both have the same setting. Cheap men's way of extending the range since u already have 2 . Also make sure u use WPA/WPA2. If u r looking to physically connect both use a Ethernet cable. But way use cable, when u can set up a wireless network.

Solve : Suspicious misuse of email URL...?

Answer»

We have noticed that somebody has created an email id using our domain name and has been sending many spam messages. Recently we have received emails showing some strange name with our domain. Eg. [emailprotected]
We have no idea how this could be happening. Does anyone have any idea on this or what we could do do prevent this? Thanks. This is a very common spoofing technique used by spammers. No, there is nothing you can do to prevent this. This is a weakness of the email protocol (SMTP). It requires a line such as "From: [emailprotected]" to be ADDED to the email. This can be rewritten by the user as the user wishes. In fact you can do this yourself quite easily in OUTLOOK or most other email programs. In the email account settings, just change the contents of the FIELD "Email address".

Spam detection ALWAYS has to be on the basis of the contents of the email, including the hidden lines (such as "From: ...") added by email programs and servers. There is literally nothing you can do to prevent someone from sending spam purportedly coming from your domain. Sender Policy Framework provides a partial solution, but it is not in widespread use, nor is it perfect, because it does not suit all use case scenarios.

Sorry!

Note: I have simplified the issue somewhat. There are preventative measures that can be taken by ISPs (such as reverse DNS lookups, RBLs, etc.) but very little that an end user can do.

Solve : Cannot see network printer?

Answer»

My wife's laptop used to be able to print to my directly attached printers VIA network. We're running wirelss and we both have internet access. Lately, my wife cannot print to any printers and they do not appear when she adds a new networked printer. I'm running McAfee and she has tried printing when my firewalls are turned off (both XP and McAfee). I normally run with just McAfee.
Something has changed but I'll be darned if I can figure it out. It's been several weeks now. Any IDEAS?

Thanks in advance,

ChuckHey Chuck, check the settings on your LINKSYS WRT150N router. You've got it set to allow 4 connections. Reset it to something like 32 or even 253!

Thanks, Chuck, that fixed it. (SHEESH what a dummy!)

HimselfOh that Chuck...

Alan <>< Hey Chuck, my wife's computer can't see the two printers again. They are still shared, they are still on line and my system is up. My wife can ping my computer just fine. When I try to add a network printer it shows my computer name but no printers under it. The WORK group name shows some printers under it as \\computerA\HPColorLaser and \\ComputerA\HPPhoto but when you try to connect to them it asks for a password to the guest account.

Now what?

Solve : How to make my wireless network unaccessible?

Answer»

I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 VISTA Home Basic laptop. My wireless system is through Time warner. All my connections to the internet and through my network all work just fine. My issue is that I wish to reset my network so that unknown computers do not connect to my network. I understand I will have to have some SORT of password/ WEP network key (?) for access to my network. Can someone please give me step by step instructions to make my wireless network protected form outside "invaders."

Thanks much,
Peter
You will have to set up your router.
Try here for DIRECTIONS they may vary a bit depending on your router make and model. Go with wpa if possible.

http://www.cradlepoint.com/knowledge-base/how-set-wireless-wep-or-wpa-securityGo to control panel, then to network and internet, got to network and sharing center, then on the left of the screen where you see "task, view computer and devices etc." look for mange wireless networks, in that window select the wireless network you are using, right click then select properties then in that window select security and choose the type of security (WPA2 is good) or one of your choice, and the type of encryption, then ENTER a good password, ( please REMEMBER your password), then click on OK.Hi Kayran
I've tried your suggestion but to no avail. I get the message:
"The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network."

The choices for Security Type:
No AUTHENTICATION (open)
Shared
WPA2-Personal
WPA-Personal
WPA2-Enterprise
WPA-Enterprise
802.1x
Encryption Type:
AES
TKIP

I've tried them all but all I get is the above message. I must be missing a step somewheres.

Thanks
Peter

Kyran's got the wrong end of the stick here. You need to focus on the settings on the router first, as hiloed said. Make and model?I have my router setup like the following an i never have any other computers/users connect to my network without me knowing about it or making changes to allow them to connect.

1st: Setup your router with a WPA2 key.
2nd: There should be an option for hiding you SSID(Your wireless network) ... disable that feature. Your network will still be available, but you will have to manually connect the first time.

If you wanted to be more secure, there should be an option to ONLY allow specific MAC address'

I can give you step by step if you get me the make and model for your router.

Solve : What did I connect to??

Answer»

For ages, my computer has been connecting to 192.168.1.100 (or something similar) for my home network. Today, however, my firewall asked to connect to MY network, but under the IP ADDRESS 169.254.96.4.

I'm worried about WHY it switched IP addresses for seemingly no reason. It still states it's connected to my home network, however, I've never SEEN my computer connect to 169.254.96.4 before. I'm going to avoid logging on anywhere until I can get some help, some info would be much appreciated.

EDIT: I found out this belongs to IANA.

Quoted from their website: "As use of these numbers is untracked and unrestricted, we can not tell you who is using these numbers."

Should I be worried?Although I don't recognise this particular sequence of octets, 169.x.x.x addresses are characteristic of a failed or incomplete DHCP request. In other words, right-clicking on your network settings and choosing "repair" may resolve this. If it doesn't consider using different means of connecting to the router - i.e. wired instead of wireless (if appropriate) or using a different ethernet cable.Okay, THANKS. I feel better now.

However, by "Failed or Incomplete DHCP request" do you mean it didn't connect properly? Because, after it asked to connect to that number, it did in fact CONTINUE normal internet operation. Did it fix itself? We'd need more information such as the output of a treaceroute. Is your computer's IP address still set to 169.254.96.4, or has the moment PASSED?

Solve : XP as a server, new laptop can read but not write to mapped drive?

Answer»

Hello FOLKS,

I am doing IT at an office and they have an XP machine as a server and 2 laptops which map an S: drive to the DATA folder on the server. Read/write no problem. They LOG in with \\computer\user and synch the passwords on the client and server.

New LAPTOP, I log in as \\computer\user with a PASSWORD that I matched with the user on the server. That same username from other computers can write to the S: drive, but it can only read from this new laptop.

Is there some setting specific to computers and not usernames? This is a strange problem. Thanks much!Check the share and file-level permissions at the XP "server" end. What error message do you see when trying to change a file? Have you isolated one file and confirmed that you can change it from one laptop but not from the new one? A METHODICAL approach will definitely help to nail down the problem.

Solve : PCI card not fitting?

Answer»

Hi

I have an acer aspire X1200-U1520A and I am trying to get wireless on it. I recently bought a Linksys Wireless PCI Adapter to add wireless to my computer, but it won't fit into the PCI slot near the PCI express slot. Do I have to use the USB wireless connection or is there ANOTHER slot or another way to get it to fit? There are a few different flavours of PCI now. When you SAY "it doesn't fit" - do the card indents not line up with the slot on the board? Is the card longer or shorter than the slots? If there's a difference, you can't make it fit. But some PCI slots are fairly stiff to START with and it can TAKE a bit of effort to get a card to fit into a slot even though it was designed to fit.

USB wireless dongles can also do the job for you. Your best bet is to get one made by the manufacturer of your wireless router; this ensures maximum COMPATIBILITY.

Solve : Multiple network adapters in safe mode?

Answer»

In a normal boot, I have 2 network adapters showing under device manager: Realtek PCI Fast Ethernet NIC and a Wireless LAN Network Adapter

When I reboot in safe mode, I have 13: a DIRECT parallel, some Teefer2 Miniports, some PACKET Scheduler Miniports, some WAN Miniport (PPPOE, L2TP, PPTP, etc).

Should I be concerned about this or is this normal?

I reformatted my hard drive 2 days AGO, so I know it isn't from having OLD drivers loaded.Don't be concerned about it.

Solve : laptop - won't wireless?

Answer»

I'm new ,but learnig, at computers. my wife has an everex, stepnote, nm3500w laptop. A friend gave me a D-link dgl-4300 router. I bought anet gear wpn111 adaptor. I downloaded the drivers to my computer and her laptop. On my computer, it hits right away, on her laptop it doesn't do anything. Any help? The general method to solve this problem is given as this:
1. Remove the drivers. Remove the device. POWER down
2. insert device. Power up
3. When the SYSTEM finds the new hardware, supply the CD for the device.
4. Reboot. Install Network WIZARD again. Reboot and it find start up.

There are some variations. One is to install the CD software BEFORE you insert the new device.

The is what they tell you to do. If you have done that and it still does not work, please come back here and I or another with help you with some more things to try.
NO luck. This is a reman adaptor I got from newegg so it didn't come with a *censored*. I got the drivers from the net. What is the MAKE and model. Some adapters have 5 or more drivers for what looks like the same adapter. Van drive you nuts!

Solve : Maybe someone can help us understand something?

Answer»

Trying to understand about the upgrade thing for AT&T-Bellsouth which is our ISP.
Some of these things below are a bit confusing. Trying to figure out if my mom has to do this to her account first or does it matter who does it first or will it mess the other one up if I do it with mine?
See both of us have separate email accounts mine is [emailprotected]
she has a totally different one. The thing about sub-accounts is what is confusing to us.

The upgrade takes just a few minutes. Please review the KEY items related to the upgrade below before proceeding: Review all the Frequently Asked Questions before you upgrade so you’ll know what to expect and what home page settings will move with you. A few key items are listed below:

* »Your new home page will be www.att.net
* » Your email IDs will not change and all your email messages, folders and address book contacts stored in webmail will automatically move with you during the upgrade.
* » If you are using an email client, mobile device, iPhone® or BlackBerry® to send and receive AT&T email, you'll need to update your settings after you upgrade, so upgrade at a time that is convenient for you. Email Settings: email Client | iPhone® | Blackberry® | All supported mobile devices
* » If you use sub-account IDs, you'll need to complete the upgrade of your Primary ID first for the sub accounts to be eligible for the upgrade.
* » Currently used stock portfolios and save photos will be available after the upgrade on the att.net A-Z Browse all page. If you have personalized settings such as stock watch, horoscope, weather, links & lottery, you'll need to reset them, so make sure to record all the settings you'll want to use on your new page.

Here is a direct link for the whole stuff there is more stuff
here http://my.att.net/s/editorial.dll?eetype=Article&eeid=6444964&render=y&ck=&Table=&_lid=215000&_lnm=Comm+napModule+fullDetails

Thanks,
Amy This is something best handled by a conversation with your Internet Service Provider.Yes, the have a 800 number and if you keep trying they will give you somebody that can explain it.

Here is a Brief overview of what is going on.

AT&T has both att.com and att.net as web sites.
AT&T has used yahoo.com to help them set up email service.
Now they want to get off of the yahoo mail server.

The change will affect both main account and sub accounts.
Problem is that we already have tried talking to them and didn't get any good help.
See they didn't even help us get setup when we switched to them for our ISP. We had to call a computer technician to help get the Internet working. See we use to have just dialup internet with Earthlink, then switched to Bellsouth DSL and we have it doing wired with the router and modem on my computer and goes through the attic out to mom's computer in the Garage. We had a problem with her computer not wanting to connect, and they couldn't help us get it fixed and kept giving us the runaround too telling us things that didn't make any sense and wasn't the problem either. One of the things they kept saying was to contact Linksys about the problem, then kept trying to sell us other stuff too which we didn't want. Since my nephew's Dad did the wiring at his house, he is the one who did it for us, and saved us like thousands of dollars too.
The problem turned out to be a problem with the connectors in the wall plates not holding together properly.
Also ever since switching to Bellsouth, we keep having some weird problems often on with our Internet Service being cancelled at times and the only way to cancel it is for someone to call in and do it(which nobody ever has).

About the only couple of things we are trying to understand is does it matter who makes the changes to their account first? And do we have to do it? My mom keeps reading it as we don't have to do it. But of course she also doesn't know much about computers and stuff either. The thing about the sub-account stuff is where we are confused about. Hers is listed as a main account and mine secondary.
Oh and is Outlook Express considered an Email client? I get confused on some of that stuff. I'm reading that stuff that talks about Email clients, mobile stuff. Which the thing is I don't have a mobile phone or anything like that. I just use my desktop computer. I check my email both through Outlook Express and through opening my browser and typing in www.bellsouth.net which then changes the address in the address bar to http://my.att.net/
and then I click on Email thing at the top and type in my username and then pulldown bellsouth in the LIST of DOMAINS and type in my password.
Yes, Outlook Express is the email client. You do not have to use it. you can get your mail also on the ATT.NET domain.
Ignore the remarks about mobile. That is for people that do email on their cell phones.

Sorry you have such a hard time with the 800 number support people. You hve to really be aggressive to get their attention. You hive to insist that the problem has very bad and you need to talk to a supervisor.

I also have problems with my connection failing several times a day.Still, I was able to download Windows 7 RC in about nine hours of continuous DSL connection at about 70 K Bps (Kilo Bytes Per Second)

I believe the ATT now has a better tutorial on how to set the POP and SMTP settings in Outlook Express. Or, just do not use it. I use OE for another account that is not with ATT. The ATT mail I get on the ATT home page. That is sometimes called "web mail" because you use the browsers instead of OE.

Even with ATT, you can still use hot mail or mail or even AOL mail. But you want to check your ATT mail from time to time to see if there are important messages from ATT.
They also have help on the chatroom too, which that hasn't been working lately for some reason. The pulldown menus that use to come up don't come up anymore, so I can't get into the chatrooms anymore and don't know why that isn't working.

The other big problem we keep having with tech support anywhere is that we can't understand them due to their accent they have, and they don't understand you either.
So, is why we don't call those numbers anymore, just computer techs anywhere, but then those cost money too and alot of them cause weird problems with our computers too at times. We keep having problems figuring out who to call anymore for computer repairs and help getting things working.

Yes, I know I can get my email on the att.net domain. By typing in the address in the link bar of browser is how I get to it.
Yes, I have a hotmail account too.
But still trying to find out if we have to change anything with our accounts with what is going on. Yes the page gives numbers to type in for POp and stuff settings, which we already have typed in when the internet got setup.
Here is a page that I keep looking at the settings on http://support.att.net/bellsouth/asp/contentview.asp?IPCheck=False&sprt_cid=85ca7d0e-ef5b-4a1b-9333-3da4f13613b9, for Outlook Express. I haven't made any changes though. Due to my health and so many other things that are difficult for me, See I always need someone to walk me through doing computer stuff since there is so many steps to do things and very complicated stuff so that you don't accidentally mess anything up either.
When looking through what I have now in Outlook Express on my computer and n on step #6 I currently have mail.bellsouth.net listed in that box there.
Then in step #8 it says My incoming mail server is a POP3 server. POP3 is what it has in the box there and then for both POP3 and SMTP it has the same as in #6 mail.bellsouth.net
But then I can't even do step #9 because I have no button that I can click on that says Settings.

Still would like to understand if we are understanding the other thing correct about will it mess up my mom's account if I make any changes to my account first?
Since there is a section that says something about main accounts and sub-accounts.

I can understand you confusion. I have been doing this for over ten years and it never gets easy. I do no like the "guess what is behind the door" approach to option menus. You have to check a button, a box a tab. It is as bad as filling out a tax form. This photo below is for Outlook Express version 6
The colors are altered here for emphasis. There is a settings bar that opens another window.

Yes, mine LOOKS mostly like yours, a little different and doesn't have a settings bar anywhere on mine is what the problem is.

Solve : How much space on a Network Drive.?

Answer»

On my network I have a large drive that has sharing turned on. Now how can I see how much space is on it?If you map the network drive in My Computer, it should show you how much space you have.
Simply right click "My Computer" and "Map Network Drive"... ENTER the ADDRESS. Many formats, (shared folders, ftp, domain shares,) are acceptable.
From the "client" computer, you will only see the amount of space AVAILABLE to the SHARE, not on the underlying drive. And for various reasons, the reported information can be somewhat inaccurate anyway...Thanks.You are both right.
I did it. It WORKED.

Solve : Comcast smartzone email access?

Answer»

Comcast RECENTLY changed over to a NEW smartzone email page. I have been unable to access from either of my 2 computers and Comcast help thinks my ROUTER ( firewall? )is blocking access, but I can connect with everything else I try. I have a netgear WNR834M router and WindXP on the machines. Has anyone else had a similar problem Thx I don't use their on-line mail, but I just tried it, and it connects fine.
Try Safe Mode with Networking. It'll tell us more.I am also experiencing the same problem with the netgear WNR834M. It loads every other webpage fine, just is extremely slow at loading comcast's smartzone email. Was able to connect to their email service fine before the switch. Tried plugging the cable modem directly into the computer and smartzone loaded instantly. Disabled SPI firewall, that didnt work... Not sure what the router is doing that is interfering with smartzone. I have tried three seperate browsers (IE, Firefox, Opera) on two seperate machines (both running XP) using a g connected laptop, and a desktop jacked into the router's lan port. Stil the only way I can get smartzone to load correctly is to bypass the router and plug the cable modem directly into the computer.Update: Got a new laptop running Vista x64, its connects to smartzone perfectly fine. XP machines still very laggy... Tried accessing smartzone using XP safe mode w/ networking, still laggy. Are there some diagnostics I can run in safe mode? Seems strange that both XP machines will connect fine directly through the cable modem, but not through the router, but the vista machine connecting via .11N works fine. Is it a problem that XP and my router are not playing nice? And if so what could the problem possibly be? Not ready to dump the XP machines as of yet, so it WOULD be nice to be able to access my email in less than 5 minutes... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Solve : What Impact does "Modulation Type" make on an overall performance??

Answer»

Hi Guys!

Changing the "ADSL Modulation Type" from Multi-Mode to GLite has help alleviate the "BLINKING ADSL Problem" for me!

That's what my observation says, atleast for a time being! But is it really practical?

I mean, does the chosen "Modulation Type" impacts an overall performance & stability of an ADSL Broadband?Changing to GLite has simply forced modulation to that type. Multimode is (supposedly) auto-detecting, but that may fail for various reasons. You can read a bit more about modulation types >here<.Man..Man!

The LINK you have POSTED in this regard seem to be for "SCHOLARS" or the ones indulged in R & D!

Don't you have something related to "Dummies"!?

Moreover, I couldn't see anything related to "Modulation types" in that SPECIFIC page!Sorry. Modulation is an advanced DSL topic...

Solve : Virtual Machines on LAN?

Answer»

I would like to have my 2 virtual MACHINES and this one on LAN. One has Ubuntu and other has Windows XP. This has Windows XP. How can this be done?

Thanks Yes, generally. I've used Virtual PC and VirtualBox and both allow clients to acce4ss the network alongside the host OSConfigure all the network devices (real and virtual) to be on the same IP RANGE (or at least VISIBLE to each other via subnet masks). I assume you wish to be able to transfer files via "Network Neighbourhood" etc. MAKE sure they're configured to use the same workgroup therefore.

Hope these pointers will help you to Google your way out of trouble. You mean like this computer on 192.168.1.4, VPC1 on 192.168.1.5, VPC2 on 192.168.1.6?Precisely.

Solve : Internet working slowly?

Answer»

I have internet explorer 7 and recently it has started working really slow. I type in an address, it won't bring it up i have to refresh a couple of times before it brings it up. it will also give me the message "internet explorer could not open the site...operation aborted" but it still brings the page up. i have unplugged the modem, deleted all temp files, cookies and such and nothing worked. can someone please help me.The first thing i would do is uninstal IE7 and see if IE6 works better...

But seriously your problem sounds like an external fault more than an IE fault.

From a command prompt type tracert and then a local web address...this will show the hops from your PC to the WEBSITE, see if it fails at any point or if any of the hops

As you can see its pretty low on the "ms" and i have a good idea that my line to the world out is good.Is there a router in between the computer and the modem? You'd've probably mentioned it if there was, but just checking. They need rebooting, too.

okay i did that but im kind of confused. how can you tell if it fails? You can't, really -- it's just a matter of whether everything comes back to normal, once you're done.

How long had you been using IE7, approximately, before things started to slow down?

What company is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)?yes, there is a router and it has been rebooted. I have been using IE7 for quite a while, don't know exactly when it was installed. probably 6 months or more. here is what i am getting when doing the tracert thing. does this look normal?

Solve : Need network range/signal help?

Answer»

I am not able to obtain Comcast or DSL . MY only option other than expensive verizon/sprint internet cards is wireless Clearwire. In ORDER to obtain a clearwire signal, I have only one corner of my home I can place their modem to obtain a signal of at least 4 bars on their modem. I have wired my Zyxel X-550 wireless router next to it.

My current home configuration has our two desktops approximately 65-70 feet away from the modem/router. These two laptops are equipped with 2.4 ghz Linksys USB wireless network adapters. The signal quality on both is poor, I have seen speed as high as 36 Mbps. The signal drops out frequently regardless of where we located these adapters.

We also have two Dell laptops which we use in the same relative location as the desktops (about 65 feet from the router). The signal strength on mine is "good" with 3 bars showing out of 5 possible. As I move closer to the router, the number of bars increases to 4 then to 5. I have an "Intel(R) PROSet/Wireless connection". The other laptop has a "NETGEAR 108 Mbps wireless PC card (WG511T)". It's performance is very poor.. and sometimes will not connect.

My question is how do I increase the signal quality/speed to these computers? I have read about 802.11n routers, adding directional antennes, adding extenders and other gizmo's.

If possible I'd like to do one thing to correct all problems but all of your advise will be GREATLY appreciated

Thanks AHEAD of time

Solve : verizon modem linksys router?

Hey everyone,

I've had so many problems in the last couple weeks it's not even funny. Last week, the actiontec MODEM/router combo CRASHED so I was forced to break out my 5 year old westell model 2200 modem and connect it to the main pc in the house. But there's a problem. I want every computer in my house to have internet. So I bought a LINKSYS WRT-150 N wireless router. The thing is, the old westell has NEVER worked right with any router. I had a netgear WGR614 wireless G router that I had connected but it crashed pretty hard. Any help would be greatly appreciated. "the old westell has never worked right with any router"

get a new modem...that works with the router...!!!

hey buddies,

i just WANT to know during NETWORK ACCESS there is bunch of data(cookies, temp files, search history etc..) is STORED in local hard drive?

THANKS in advanceWhen you are on the internet they get stored in your web browser's cache.

When you are on a network with other computers like in a LAN you don't get temp files like you do when you are on the web.

For example... Internet Explorer uses...

Solve : gigabit switch help?

Answer»

Ok i may be a big dummy but im just not sure what im doing. If i have a wireless NETWORK but want to wire up 1 desktop and my unraid server(check it out, its great!!!) directly how can i do this? Heres my problem? The server likes gigabit. The router ISNT gigabit. Can i PLUG in a gigabit switch directly to the router and have it still be truly gigabit between the two. No.

A WIRED connection always goes as fast as the slowest thing on the connection.

If I understand you right you have a server hook up to a switch and than the switch to a router? The switch should auto adjust itself to the right speed.

I agree with spoiler your router will still slow THINGS down even though you have a gigabit switch but if you connect the gigabit switch directly to your computer you will notice a difference in speed.

Solve : Internet connected, won't browse???

Answer»

Please help. I have a paper due tonight for an online class I am TAKING and I needed to upload some photos from my camera. Well my USB wasn't recognizing the camera, so I googled the error and followed the steps shown which said go into device manager, and delete everything under Universal Serial Bus controllers then reboot the computer. I did that, but my laptop froze so I had to restart it manually (holding down the POWER button).

When my computer booted back up, I got a very familiar surpise; went to go online, and my internet says it was "connected" and the connectivity is excellent, however it's not working. MSN won't work, every BROWSER I have won't work, email won't work, everything says I am not connected to the internet, but the little computer icon in the tray says I am. This has HAPPENED to me now about 12 times since I got my laptop about 2 years ago. I have an Asus A3H, wireless internet, Windows XP, SP2 if that helps any.

Also - Before I used to just go to system restore for everytime it did that, and it'd fix my internet. Now I went to system restore and apparently I have no restore points. I created one, but that did no good as I created it after this happened, hopeful SR would do something. Even though System Restore was turned on, and there was a bunch of restore points just before this happened. I'm freaking out now, can anyone please help me? Before when this happened, I tried EVERYTHING and the only thing that would work is system restore. Now that's gone, idk what to do. Thanks..

I should add that I have tried calling asus and isp but they as usual are no help.Go START>Run, type in:
cmd
Click OK.

At Command prompt, type in:
ping www.google.com
Hit Enter.

Solve : Help! Never seen This Before!?

Answer»

I was changing the settings in the configuration tab of the NIC in device manager. I would do a hard reboot, reset my modem, then start EVERYTHING back up each time.

The PCI was somewhere around $25 at best buy, their cheapest. Luckily I had $20 gift CARD so only had to pay $5. but that gift card was going to go to a new mouse.

Reinstalling drivers was LIKE the first or SECOND thing I tried- no help there.

Not sure about best buy's network, all I know is that they have it all through a router.

Solve : linksys wired router no longer working?

Answer»

Last week I noticed the internet connection getting slower, it would take forever for pictures to load. THen it basically stopped altogether. I called optimum online and we determined that the router is the problem. When the LAPTOP is plugged directly into the modem, the internet works fine. When both COMPUTERS go through the router, no internet or very very sluggish internet if we're lucky. It is a linksys BEFSR41 v.2. I went to the linksys support forum (since they wanted to charge me 35 bucks over the phone) and it appears many other people have experienced this problem. I've had the router for years with no trouble. Can anyone recommend a way of fixing this problem or can you recommend a new router? My brother wants to have both wired and wireless internet in the house and not spend a ton of money. MAYBE we should GIVE up on this router and buy a new one. Should we steer clear of linksys? Any help would be appreciated. This is getting frustrating. Thanks.I would UNPLUG the router for about 30 seconds or so then plug it back in. If that doesn't work there's something wrong with the router. I have a linksys wrt54g and I've been very happy with it. depending on where you live you can get it for about 50 bucks. I'll check around the linksys website to see if I can find a solution for you. I looked around and for some reason they are having a problem with your router model I would get the wrt54g model it's both wired and wireless. I've had it for about 2 years now and I've never had a problem with it.

Solve : internet connection problem!?

Answer»

hi!
i recently purcahsed a wireless router so i could connect to the internet with my laptop. afetr installing the router, following the instructions, i cant seem to find my netwrok when i search for it. I can find surrounding networks, and have PREVIOUSLY connected to puiblic networks, so i know there isnt a problem with the wireless card inside the laptop. i tried my friends laptop, and she had no problems searching and connecting to my network...

can ANYBODY shed some light on this???
many thanks!1. SSID not broadcast. The wireless router probably can be configured to NOT broadcast its Service Set Identifier (SSID), also known as the network name. By not broadcasting the network name, the laptop (and all of your neighbors) will not see it in the list of available networks. Somewhere on the laptop you should be able to configure the default wireless network (SSID) you wish to connect to. Wireless LAN connection, wireless NIC CONFIGURATION, or the Windows/vendor's wireless monitor software on the laptop? It is "best practice" to not broadcast the SSID.

Or you can configure your router to broadcast the network name (SSID).

Time to find and review the documentation for your network components.

2. Operating System. What operating system (and service pack level) is the laptop running?

3. Wireless Router. What is the MAKE and model number of the wireless router?

4. Laptop Wireless NIC. If not built in, what is the make and model number of the wireless NIC? If built in, what is the make and model number of the laptop?

Solve : Very slow connection in Network?

Answer»

I am stumped and need some help. Recently I bought a new HP laptop for my son, and had it join my home network which consists of six other PCs (some laptops, some desktops). His new laptop runs Vista Home, and the computers in the network run XP or Vista.

The problem is that he can join, but any connection between his laptop and the REST of the computers is extremely slow. I find it, but it takes 5-10 minutes. Transfering files takes forever. The network functions PERFECTLY fine for the rest of the PCs.

Anybody have any idea why this is?

Any help appreciated.

JemotoAnyone? Is more info needed? Is he using wireless? Thanks for the response.

Yes, he is using wireless, but so are 4 of the other computers in the network.

JemotoThe network speed is usually determined by your distance from the wireless router, for example the connection speed can be very fast when you are standing next to the router but incredibly slow if you are TWO rooms away. Thanks, yes, I am aware of that, but his laptop is phenomenally slow even sitting next to the router, whil another laptop upstairs functions fine.

Strangely, I just hooked it up to the router with a cable, and then it is fine. I don't understand why this should be a problem with a BRAND new laptop.

Any ideas?

are you using a HUB?1. What operating system(s) are on your network?

2. Computer BROWSER Service. If you're looking in "My Network Places", people frequently complain about not seeing the "other" computers and their resources. This has to do with the "Computer Browser" service. At least one of the computers on the LAN (the one that's powered "on" most of the time), should have the "Computer Browser" service running. It will build and maintain a "master" list of the other computers in your workgroup, so when they go to look at "My Network Places" this list can be sent to them without having to build one from scratch for each request. Not positive, but I believe it will only show computers that have the service for "FILE and printer sharing" installed.

Solve : WLAN Disabled?

Answer»

I was burning DVD's and went to turn the WLAN off (HP Pavilion ZV6270US laptop), and did it by right clicking something(?) and disabling, instead of USING the button(I was tired and watching TV and not paying attention). Now I can't enable the WLAN. I have checked the BIOS, device manager, uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers from the disk, tried all the wizards and helps that I could find, but no luck. Everything tells me that it is installed and working properly, but the hp wireless assistant and network connections still say disabled. When I press the keyboard button it goes from disabled to off and back to disabled when pressed again. Any ideas short of reformatting? (XP Home)Check and see if the laptop has a physical switch for the WLAN.
Do you have a wireless icon in the System tray? try right clicking from there
Also, try network properties in control panel.
Try going into Control Panel, admin tools, services and make sure that wireless SERVICE are enabled, and look for hp wireless assistant to be enabled. Good luckYes, that is the keyboard button I mentioned. The HP Wireless Assistant icon is there but says disabled and when I right click there is nothing there to enable it, it just gives the status as disabled. All my attempts at repairing, reinstalling, or starting fail. I even tried to use a linksys usb adaptor and it was disabled and wouldn't work either. My router and internet connection was and still is working(including Wireless) just not with my laptop. I'm writting this on my laptop with an ethernet connection. In Network properties, Right click on the wireless adapter, and choose properties. Click the wireless tab. click on "use WINDOWS to configure this connection" (Or something like that, I'm typing this from my mac, so I can't check) and then try again. Also, the switch I am refering to is an actual switch, with on off positions. I chased a similar problem around on mother in laws HP, only to find a switch below the touch pad. I don't think it would effect the USB, though.
Windows says that it is enabled and working but no network available. The switch, like I said, just turns it off and when you press it again to turn it on it says disabled. The router is working. I have wireless on one of my desktop and also my iphone uses it ok. The laptop had been using wireless ok before I disabled it somehow. I have checked everything several times but no luck. I think I am looking at REFORMATING and starting fresh. My harddrive is partitioned so I dont have to reinstall much besides windows, its just time consuming. (I did try restore but it didn't fix it)have you tried right-clicking on the network icon on the taskbar, and selecting "view available wireless networks"- seems you unset a default so it doesn't automatically connect.Yes, it says no networks available. I have checked everywhere and everything that I know. I finally got tired of messing with it and reformatted "C" and did a clean install of XP. After I installed the drivers from the HP disk, the WLAN came on for about ten seconds and then went to disabled. I am really puzzled now because the only programs that I have installed on the other partions are genealogy programs, nothing that would change or interfer with drive C. Just a reminder, my router is working OK, and I even reset it back to default. Anybody have a clue? What is the Model Number of that HP Laptop?HP zv6270us. I have been to HP's online help twice. So far all they have had me do is reinstall drivers, which were all installed and upto date, including BIOS, before. I am at a loss! I hate to have to take it into a shop for repair, I've always built and fixed them myself, but I'm stuck! This idea is awfully far fetched, but worth a thought. I had a similar issue with a Symbol scanner, running windows mobile. Look at your wireless properties, and check to make sure that your set to use US wireless, not anywhere else (including "anywhere". I can't imagine it being an issue on a laptop, but I didn't think it was my problem on the scanner either, so give it a shot.I didn't find anything. I've been through everything I think. It is enabled and working except where it counts, at the WLAN itself. It wont enable and says no networks available. The BIOS has the WLAN enabled and I did a complete format and clean install of XP, so I don't have any idea what would be left to control it. HP techs (3) couldn't help me either. Any more ideas?

Solve : Please help me connect to the internet?

Answer»

OK - here is my situation. I have a COMPAQ desktop and a Dell 600M laptop computer both wired to a Surfboard SB4200 cable modem through a Linksys WRT54GP2 router. When I left for vacation a week ago I had no problems connecting to the internet through either computer. I brought my laptop with me on vacation but didn't use it for anything other than watching movies and uploading pictures. Now that I am home I cannot access the internet from the laptop. The desktop works fine.

This morning I spent about an hour on the phone with Roadrunner tech support and their final diagnosis was that there is NOTHING wrong with the connection, the modem, or the router - so it MUST be an issue with the laptop & I should call Dell. She told me to tell them that I cannot ping even though I have a valid IP address - and that they would know what to do. Well, as many of you with expired warranties know Dell wants to charge me $40 to diagnose the problem - so that is why I am turning to you. I'll pay the charge but not until I've exhausted all other avenues.

So there you have it. Any ideas? I'm not sure what other information to provide - both computers are running Win XP SP2.

Please give me some ideas.

Thanks!Download, install, and run LSP-Fix: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
Restart computer, and see, if it helped.
If not...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
Restart computer, and check again. That did the trick - THANK you very much!

I love this website!Nice job
I saved you a phone call to Dell....LOLBTW, which one fixed the problem, or you tried both?I tried the LSP first and it did not solv the problem, but then the Winsock fix did.

Solve : Intermittent Connectivity Issues?

Answer»

So I'm at my wit's end. I've been having connectivity (internet) issues for about 3 months. I run my XP enabled comp, my Vonage VoIP and my Xbox 360 for xbox live gaming.

I have been having issues with all 3 intermittently. I WOULD say that 95% of the time my network and internet is working flawlessly, but the other 5% is what's getting my hair torn out.

Basically, I lose signal strength intermittently for about 10 seconds. It happens maybe once every 15-30 minutes. It causes the people on the other end of my VoIP calls to be unable to hear me. It makes me disconnect from games (though not completely disconnect from XBL) on xbox live. And it causes web pages to not load.

I have just replaced my older Linksys router with a new D-link 4100 model and continue to have the same problem.

I never had this problem prior to 3 months ago and I had the same network setup.

Here is a sample of my router logs (which luckily are much more detailed than my previous router)(also, PARDON the dates as I just updated the time/date minutes ago):

Could my McAfee Firewall and Router Firewall be interfering with one another?
They shouldn't, but....RESTART in Safe Mode with Networking, and see, if same thing happens.
I've noticed, that latency numbers are pretty high. On good connection, they shouldn't be higher, then 20.
I'm assuming, you spoke to to your ISP?
What type of connection is it?
Did you try bypass router?
What Windows version is it?I took my router out of the equation for a couple hours one night and didn't notice the problem, but then it can go a while without presenting itself. Also, since I replaced the old router with a new one, it would seem to mean that the problem is not the router itself.

I talked to Comcast.... for all the good that will do. They said they will monitor my connection for the next 48 hours and report any issues. If that doesn't work they will send a tech out (which I'm not sure will solve much).

My connections is cable intenet.

My windows version is XP home.I'd try bypassing router for a day, or so, and see, if problem still occurs. Since it happens occasionally, it's not gonna be easy to pinpoint it.Yeah... the only problem is that my phone, computer and xbl is hooked up the the router. So I'd have to choose one and go without all the other.
The line tests seem to show that there are some line issues though which makes me wonder if it is Comcast's fault and hopefully something they will fix.

It's also odd that I've had the same network setup for 2 years and only started having problems 3 months ago.In that case, you may want to wait for Comcast, and see, if they'll find something.

Solve : satellite internet upload exceeded?

Answer»

The satellite internet service provider I use puts limits on how many MB of upload and download you can use in a 30 day period. The download is 7500MB and upload is 2300MB, they SAY I have exceeded the amount of upload in the 30 day period. I called them and they told me that viewing things like videos and pictures on some sites will do this (in other words I did not get much of a answer). I do not do any web publishing, just normal web surfing and emailing. I use a wireless router at home and three computers for everyone in the house to use, not sure if that WOULD do it.
Trying to understand the upload THING so I can correct it, but without understanding it not sure how to monitor and correct it. If someone can explain this to me it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank YouQuote

I use a wireless router at home and three computers for everyone in the house to use, not sure if that would do it.

Here is your answer. You have 3 machines creating traffic. Your ISP only looks at the total traffic from your account. They don't give you the upload and download limits per machine.

Also what they told you...videos...is also a download limit killer. If each VIDEO is 250 Megs it only takes 4 to add up to a gig.

Solve : Do I need a switch or a router??

Answer»

Hi everyone,
My first TIME here. I own a large building with many tenants. I need to install a new wireless router next to an existing one which is about 150' from the cable modem in the basement. The routers are for two different tenants who each need their own NETWORK. Do I need to run a separate CAT5 to the modem or can I tap into one of the ports in the existing modem (I'm thinking not) or do I go into a switch and then a cable to each router or something completely different? I really don't want to run another cable.

ThanksI think your best bet WOULD be to LET your tenants manage their own networks. Tell them they can buy themselves an access POINT or bridge to be the gateway into their own network.

good day!

My situation here is this, my uncle bought for me a laptop ABROAD, and after I received it and try to connect to the internet via DSL it doesn't work. But when i check the properties of network connection it appears to be that it is connected and has a connection of 100mbps, I even tried to connect via wirelessLAN but still the same i can detect the connection but can't browse the net... but other laptops can connect the net via wireless and not... BTW i'm using vista for the non working one

thanks for your cooperation
P.S.
repairing or diagnosing doesn't fix anythingcheck your IP address# see if its the same IP address# as on your other computer that you connect to the internet with. may need to hit REPAIR button to try and get a new one. While connected, check to see if you can PING another computer. Go to Start -> Run and type "cmd". When the command prompt opens, type "ping www.yahoo.com". What happens?

Also in the command prompt, type "ipconfig". What does it return?

Solve : NEW BELKIN N1 WIRELESS ROUTER (F5D8231-4) VER.5000 weak signal?

Answer»

Hello all...
I am trying to figure out the problem I am having with my router. I just bought the new belkin router and have it connected to my desktop. I also have 3 laptops in the house that share the network all running on vista. The two older laptops with 802.11g are working fine and have great signal. My problem is with my newer dell with vista and a 802.11n CARD and is receiving a real weak signal. I just replaced this router because of the failing signals with the old router that was a linksys . My ISP is comcast. Does anyone have any solutions for me? The belkin people said I have to call dell tech support to change the settings on my new laptop. I dont understand this since it is a n router and a n card. PLEASE help. I appreciate any help.

thank youDo you have the router setup to work with 802.11g and 802.11n at the same time? Or is it set to work with 802.11g for your other laptops?

thank you for replying spoiler. yes it is defaulted to send and receive all signals. i double checked that before asking for help. i am so frustrated with this because i am sitting here and TYPING this on an older laptop sitting right NEXT to my new laptop and this one is a g not n. i welcome all comments and help. thank you in advance.Just to test try changing your router to "N" and see if the helps with the signal.

Does your NIC also accept "G"?

thank you spoiler for replying--if i change it to n wont that affect the other laptops that do run on g ? what is the nic ? thank you again

So, you have two internet connections?
yes i have 3 lan cart and 2of them is adjust for 2 adsl modemyou mean, you have three lan cards?
Windows only utilizes one internet connection at a time. It does not natively combine network bandwidth to increase SPEED. There are programs that can combine them. One that I know of (only runs on linux though) is firehose. You can use the information on the linked page to COME up with google search terms.

Solve : Saving Wireless Network Settings?

Answer»

My sister is running XP Home on a Compaq laptop. She recently installed a wireless network. EVERYTHING works fine, but when she powers down, the wireless settings are erased. Everytime she wants to access her network, she MUST re-accomplish the settings. What kinds of things will cause this to happen--COMPUTER, software, virus protecton (she uses Norton Internet SECURITY), router, etc.?That is strange. Does she have administrator rights to this computer. The only THING I could come up with is maybe the computer has been setup to not save settings. Is she using the default Wireless program for Windows?

I know my brother is using another program to configure wireless networks but it can't safe the password for our router so I created a macro for him.

Solve : Internet through wireless AP?

Answer»

i have a CNET wireless access point which can be SETUP using a browser. i did every setup regarding wireless and its connected to my laptop where i can share files and folder. regarding one settings of the access point it ask to ENTER the ip address, DNS,MAC etc. problem is that what should i enter those? i have a fibre optic internet connection where all the LAN properties are set to automatic and the ISP provide connection only in my MAc address. for this reason i cant access internet through the wireless AP even if the cable is put in the LAN port. please provide a solution for this. how can i find the ip address of my LAN which is to be put in to the access point settings. in windows ip configuration it shows the static ip address provided by ISP. i tried by entering that ip. but failed. pls help meLet me understand this...you have a fiber connection to what? Did they give you a router? Or is it connected right into your computer?

Normally your interenet connection goes to a router and the router reads all the settings like IP DNS etc...than it gives your LAN a address and and sends requests to your ISP DNS server.

The information you are asking about comes from your local LAN. there is no router in my side. i have only the LAN cable which i put to my notebook directly and in this condition internet comes and the ipconfig/all shows like this

ip address--78.139.172.198( this is my wan ip)

default gateway-78.139.172.1
DNS- 213.157.198.192
213.196.198.193

Subnet mask- 255.255.255.0
In the LAN properties all the settings are automatic. now if i put the same cable to the wireless access point and connect my notebook wirelessly to the access point, i cant browse any page. what setting should i make in the access point? That cable you are plugging into your notebook - what's on the other end of it? its coming from the top of the building. may be a modem with a optical fiber.in the other end of the cable a switch/hub is there without router as ISP provide each computer a specific internet Ip address assigned to the MAC address of the network cardIs this a "Home" network? Some ISPs tie your SERVICE to a specific MAC address.

What is the make and model number of the CNET wireless access point?

With that information someone might be able to pull up documentation on the internet to see what its configuration options are. Specifically whether it has a local DHCP server capability. Also most home routers provide capability to "clone your MAC address" (to that needed to satisfy ISP). Not sure if your wireless access point has that capability.ya. exactly. my isp provide to a single card with one MAC address. my access point has the option to change/clone the mac address. i did too. but will same result. cant even ping the WAN ip address(78.139......) after using it. only i can ping the local ip address of the access point and the wireless network card address. pls preview my access point here
http://www.cnet.com.tw/product/cwa-854ht.htm1. User Guide. For anyone following this THREAD, here is a PDF download of CWA-854HT User's Guide.

2. Thinking Out Loud. My first thought is that you're trying to use the wrong component in your network. Normally, someone would use a home wireless router to isolate their "private" Local Area Connection (LAN) from the "public" Internet. These components generally provide one Wide Area Network (WAN) port to connect towards the internet source, four wired LAN ports for connections within your home network, and a wireless hub to link your wireless clients to your home LAN. But I haven't read the linked document yet to see what functionality your wireless access point provides. Will get back to you after I've read it, with my thoughts on how it can be used (to link your home network to the internet?).

3. References. This website www.home-network-help.com is very useful. You probably should look at the sublink to their wireless network pages. If you want internet access for multiple computers through a single public internet address (home?); you should be using a home router; either wired, wireless, or combination. They usually provide four wired ethernet LAN ports that permit you to setup a private Local Area Network. They also include hardware firewall to further separate your private network from the public internet.

Your wireless access point by itself is not going to work. It can however be wired to a home router to provide a wireless hub (or an additional wireless hub).

The other option which no one would recommend for security reasons is to use the "Internet Connection Sharing" capability of the Windows operating SYSTEM. This requires a computer with two NICs; one connected directly to your internet connection, the other to your wireless access point (or Local Area Network. Then as long as that computer is up and running, your other computers can access the internet through it and the wireless access point. Again this is a very poor solution.

You should also remove the public IP address from your post (using "Modify" button on that reply) as you don't need unwelcome visitors.

Not sure what you mean. Does the laptop (pink, silver, or red?) see the "SSID" of your wireless network, aka network name?

2. What is the make and model number of the wireless router?

3. Shot in the DARK. From Hi-Grade Computers Plc FAQs

How do I check if my system has wireless?

For Windows Vista Systems:
Click START and then right-click the COMPUTER option, and then left-click on PROPERTIES. Once the “view basic information about your computer” window appears, click on the DEVICE MANAGER option which is located under TASKS on the left hand side of the Window. At this point a USER ACCOUNT CONTROL window might appear, if so click the CONTINUE button.

A small DEVICE MANAGER window should then appear with a list of categories. Click the plus symbol next to the NETWORK ADAPTERS category, this should then list an Ethernet device, and if your system has one a wireless adapter should ALSO be listed.

How do I enable my wireless CARD?

This process will vary depending on the model of notebook. To confirm the model number please look on the bottom of the notebook:

Model VA250P / VA250D / VA250H
The wireless button on this system is located to the left of the systems main power button. To confirm that the wireless card has activated an LED will light up. This is located on a small plastic strip in the bottom right hand corner of the system (just right of the touchpad), and will have the same symbol as the wireless button.

Model 8615
To turn on the wireless card for this system hold down the FN key (should be in the bottom left hand corner of the keyboard) and then press the F1 key once. To the right of the system power button are three small buttons, and to the right of these are a set of LED’s. The first LED should light up to indicate that the wireless card has been activated.

Model 8317
Looking at the front edge of the system, on the left hand side should be three small switches. The middle switch turns on the wireless card. A small LED just above these three switches should light up, to confirm that the wireless card has been activated.

Model 330
The wireless button on this system is located to the right of the systems power button. When the wireless card is activated an LED will intermittently flash, which is located underneath the power button.
