Solve : cisco networking devices?

Answer»

i just want to have an idea of the basics, then one way or the other i'll GET the restTake a look at CISCO web SITE. They have a ton of free information.

You can also goggle CISCO and CCNA which is the first level of there certs PROGRAM...again a ton of free info!

To learn the basics of Cisco devices then you need to get yourself a book and READ it. The most basic Cisco TEST is CCENT. So buy yourself a study guide for that test and you will know the basics. You should preferably buy one from Cisco Press since it is approved by Cisco.

Solve : keep going over on my hughesnet downloads?

Answer»

I hope someone could help me with my problem with going over my limit on downloads. I am hooked up with hughesnet, which is a PAIN in the *CENSORED*. I need to get my big downloads to start from 3 to 6 am because that is my free time, and I can download all I want. Trouble is I don't know what I am downloading and don't know how to see what I am downloading. I was hoping that there might be a PROGRAM to schedule all my downloads for my free time and find out what is TAKING my bandwitch.......................any help on this............two-dogs Quote

Trouble is I don't know what I am downloading and don't know how to see what I am downloading.
What EXACTLY is your question and how are you downloading this?

If you're downloading torrents, it usually takes up all your bandwith.

Does anyone know of a way to have an e-mail account without having ACCESS to the internet???

We don't want internet in our home, but would LIKE to have e-mail.Ask a FRIEND to SET one up for you. Gmail?Obviously, a key fact has been implied/assumed here. That is that you will, INDEED, have Internet access somewhere, just not at home.I had a friend without computer, but with email address. He used library computers.Quote

Solve : Sharing Drives on Home Network?

Answer»

Desktop A wired-sharing "D" and "E" drive (THEDELL)
Desktop B wireless-sharing "D" drive (THEHP)
Laptop wireless (COMPAQ)

All connected by Linksys WRT54GC.
All firewalls disabled on PC's-firewall enabled on router
All in workgroup called "HOUSE"
All running up to date "Avast" antivirus
All running remote access program called RealVNC
All can reach internet with no problems
All have ENABLE NetBIOS over TCP/IP turned on
All running Windows XP Home

Here is the problem, workgroup HOUSE cannot be found on laptop after booting from cold start or standby(therefore Desktop A shared drives cannot be accessed).

If I ping desktop A with the computer name(THEDELL), it cannot be found.
If I ping desktop A with the IP ADDRESS, it is found. Then re-pinging the name will work.

OR

If I use RealVNC to access desktop A from the laptop(just open up the access window then close it), then I can access the shared drives.

After successful pinging or using RealVNC, shared drives on Desktop A can be accessed.

After a period of time (undetermined), the shared drive access goes away and I have to do one of the two processes to access the shared drives again. Rebooting does not help!!

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?1. The laptop needs to be able to locate the sharing computer. Try one or more of the following:
a. Ensure "Computer Browser" service running on at least one of the workgroup computers.
b. Create "lmhosts" file on laptop (if static IP addresses) in the %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC directory to associate NetBIOS names to IP addresses.
c. Possibly use IP address (if permitted and static) instead of NetBIOS name when mapped network drive is defined on the laptop. May want to check "Reconnect at LOGON" box when network drive is defined.

2. Computer Browser is the METHOD normally used.

Solve : WHAT AM I DOING WRONG??

Answer»

I am having trouble getting my Dell computer set up on our home wireless NETWORK. It's an INSPIRON B130 model. It shows that it's recognizing the signal from the router, excellent STRENGTH, looks like it's completely connected but whenever I try to access the internet, it shows no connection found. I've tried connecting from the internal mini-card as well as a USB adapter that I purchased. I'm sure it's something simple that I'm just not doing....could you give me some ideas or directions where I can start troubleshooting, please? Thanks! Is network card switch ON?Do you have an encrypted wireless network? If so, you'll have to enter the encryption KEY.

Solve : problems downloading but not uploading........?

Answer»

just went with wireless hi-speed after YEARS of dial up......the installer tested the speed with his laptop and was around 1400kb download and around 400 KB upload......my older (6 yr old, pent 4, 2.0ghz, w/ only 256mg ram) pc COULD only get 350kb both ways...

could it be my eathernet card?...not enough ram?....(the installer hinted at the ram being the problem, he had like 2gigs of ram)....

I don't have a clue .....

Solve : Internet Being Slowed down by Laptop Connection to Router?

Answer»

I have a D-link DI-524 router and recently my dad got a new laptop. i've noticed that it is QUITE the connection hog though. whenever it is on, nearly all of my internet connection on MY computer comes to a screeching halt, while the laptop runs at top speed.

This of course makes me angry, and my SISTER not giving a *censored* about my feelings since shes the one who uses his laptop the most.

Is there any way i could fix this problem? is it my router being old? or possibly the laptop connection is unstable and taking up too much.My guess is the laptop has programs running on it that are UTILIZING the Internet connection, e.g. may have some type of bittorrent being used to download and/or share files.

Unfortunately if this is the case there is not much you can do. There are some routers (I don't believe yours is one of them) that can allow USERS to setup bandwidth limiting or caps that would prevent computers from taking too much of the shared bandwidth. Other than getting a router that supports that feature or setting up some type of proxy there is not a lot that can be done.

If possible you may want to see if you can suggest to your sister or PARENTS that she not use or limit the use of any file sharing, bittorrent, p2p, etc. on the laptop.

Solve : Can't connect to the Internet with New built computer!?

Answer»

A friend of mine built me a new gaming computer, and everything seems to be working fine, But he had to leave early and when I tried to logg on to the Internet with this new computer I could not. I use DSL, what can I do get get an Internet connection?Tell us about the operating system, and some about the hardware, and what kind of error message(s) you get when you try to connect to the internet. Does the Network Connection icon in the system tray (lower right) show a physical connection?

Welcome to the forum!
Windows Xp Home SP-2, Evga Nforce 780i Motherboared, Geforce 9800gtx Vid card, Intel duelcore E8400 processor 3.0ghz , 2GB ram soon to be 4GB. As for the network connection In tray, SAYS local connection 2 Is not connected. No error messages.I'm guessing it's a WIRELESS connection, or do you have an ethernet cable plugged into the computer's port?Yes, I have ethernet connection. DSL.So you're wired from the DSL modem to the computer?
YES SIR, DSL to modem.Do you have a different Ethernet cable you can try between the modem and the computer?I used the same one I am using for this computer. On the new computer, is the Ethernet port into which you plug the on-board port built into the motherboard, on an added card? Are the DRIVERS for the port INSTALLED?Aegis, I am sorry but I do not understand what you mean by-Ethernet port into which you plug the on-board port built into the motherboard, on an added card? All drivers are Installed. I got this error message resently...... Limited or no connectivity... problem occured because the network did not assign a network address to the computer. I HATE that error message, because I'm not quite sure how to fix it. I recently encountered it on a wireless connection, but it went away when I removed the encryption (which is not a proper answer, but I"m living with it for now because I hope the wireless will be temporary)

Let me poke around on the 'net...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902974

I'll have to review these, too.Well I feel like Patric on spongebob square pants, maybe I should hide under a rock.I fixed the problem by simply calling my DSL provider. New computer means new Ip adress. My new computer did not reconize my modem. Ain't no big deal! I'd say that's how a lot of us learn stuff. It certainly didn't occur to me to ask you if that was part of the problem.

The important thing is that you're up and running! Thanks Aegis, Theres a few good people Left In the world, WOW.

Solve : Losing connection to wireless?

Answer»

Well I unhooked the computer and moved it with the wireless adaptor to my sons room. Signal is now excellent, it connects and works fine.

So what caused the change in reception in my living room. It has been there for 6 to 8 years now on the wireless.

Is my router dying?

Should I get a repeater and put it in the system to get a stronger signal in the living room. This might also help me in my detached shop connect with my laptop anyhow.

Thanks for the help this last week. I just don't understand what causes things to change in the middle of the game. Copy/pasting myself again:

Is it possible for you to change the CHANNEL that the router broadcasts on? It should be in the Wireless setup of your router. Try a few different ones, if there is a router nearby that is on the same channel or other wireless devices like Phones near they may cause interference. was on 6 forever. Tried 7, 8, &10 earlier today. No results

Also had read some post on the web about people having problems after installing XP SP3 so I removed it with no luck either.

Anybody have experience with hi gain ANTENNAS? A repeater doesn't appear to be the way to go from what I can read.I feel a solution is to buy a new high end wireless router with improved signal capabilities. You can always return it if you felt it didnt solve the problem.

I will bet that will fix it ..trust meWas this a Belkin router, or am I thinking of another post?
Belkin routers dont work very well at all for wireless functions. Look into Netgear or Linksys.

Costco usually has good router sales, however, sometimes they only sell gaming grade routers, which are very expensive. If you happen to have a Costco card, take a look.

Take a look at Newegg as well:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=Routers
What are you using to connect wirelessly? The default XP program or software that came with the router?Linksys router all wireless adaptors that I have added to computers are Linksys as well. . Again it is 6 to 8 years old so may be just be going away. I use the XP softare to connect. I tried the software that came with my wireless adaptor after this ISSUE started. It didn't work either. No Costco here but may look at Sam's. Linksys still a good CHOICE?Definitely.
Being as I have worked with more Netgear routers, I prefer them, however, Linksys is the next thing on the list. Linksys is the one I would avoid, its what gave me problems and I went to Netgear and it has worked perfect so far.

I also had a linksis notebook card that gave me *censored* and I bought netgear to REPLACE it and also has worked without any problems.got a new Netgear router going today. Everything working correctly again. Guess the old Linksys was just getting weak. Thanks for the help guys. Great to hear you resolved the issue. Feel free to start another post if you have any more questions, or come up with another problem

Solve : Very strange Internet Problem with Applications.?

Answer»

So, I was on my gaming computer yesterday, I was using some applications like Steam, xfire, Counter-strike etc.. If any of you are familiar with steam you'll know there is an in-game community page where you can see your groups/friends and other info about your personal steam profile by press alt+tab. Well anyway, I was in game and needed to view that page, I tried opening it and it was loading really slow, until is gave me "This program cannot display the webpage".

Here is a screenshot of the exact message it gave me.

http://i34.tinypic.com/65sxp3.jpg

Later I found out that absolutely ALL programs besides my interenet browsers, (Opera, firefox, IE) APPEARED to be blocked from displaying web based pages.

For example, steam won't load my community page inside the client, Veoh (steaming video app) won't load any videos, xfire doesn't load the banner ads at the top.

BUT remember I can still ACCESS the internet with these apps, Just none of them will render what appears to be web based code like

HTML, flash etc.. WITHIN non-browser applications only. I can still use web browsers fine.

Things I've tried....

disabling my firewall & checking if the programs were allowed
disabling my anti-virus
Restarting my router
repairing my internet connection.

I am running Windows XP Home Edition version 2002 Service Pack 3.

Any advice? I am so frustrated trying to figure this out.

EDIT: If it's any help I also found out all of my internet browsers are running under a proxy that I DIDN'T set. I'm not sure if adware could be responsible or what.

It says it's using "local host" as the name address when I check me ip. Did you try System Restore?I did not, I think i'll give that a shot and report back.

Thanks for the suggestion. We'll be here Quote from: Broni on November 27, 2008, 07:40:23 PM

Did you try System Restore?

Try some basic connection fixes, and we'll go from there:

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't WORK, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK.

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK.

At Command Prompt, type in:

Solve : HELP! Wi-fi connects, disconnects, then doesn't let me back on?

Answer»

It used to work fine, but my laptop now connects to whatever wireless network i'm using, then sometimes disconnects. It's usually if a page is taking a long time to LOAD, it knocks off my connection- which i can't get back unless i restart the laptop. To get the internet now, i have to run my laptop off the LAN cable direct from the router- at least it doesn't disconnect that way.

Any IDEAS on a solution to this problem WOULD be greatly appreciated- cheers!1st thing is to look for a newer driver for the wireless device online at the manufactures site and install it. Remove any unneeded networks from the usable list and make sure yours is set to default (only connect to) if that is the correct term. You may also want to change the wireless channel around and see if another one WORKS any better.

would it happen to be a Linksys router?

unplugging for a second and or RESETTING the router may also help

Solve : Connection one wireless router to another wirelessly???

Answer»

Is it possible to pull an internet conection from a router that is pluged into a phone line to another that isn't to provide internet access to a computer without wifi capabilites? I guess it would be using the second router as its wifi, connected by LAN.

Is this possible?

Thanks in advance for your help

FrankRouters dont plug into phone lines. The connections are completely different.

Or do you mean a DSL modem?

Could you try re-stating your question

Eg: Does the first device already plug into your phone line?
And if so, does it have more than one outgoing Ethernet plug?

If so, then you can plug a WiFi router into it to have Wireless.
The device is pluged into a phone jack. Its has 4 LOCAL ethernet ports and a phone line jack in the back of it.

It is a 2Wire Wireless DSL Gateway Model# 2701HG http://www.2wire.com/?p=106

I ASSUMED it is a wireless router cause I have two laptops and a Wii SYSTEM conected to itwirelessly. And I can Plug ehternet cables into the back of it.

So this is my access point to the internet from home.

I have a PC that is not capable of a wireless connection and an Efficient networks speedstream 6300 wireless DSL Gateway. is it possible to have the Speedstream connect to the 2Wire for Internet Access?

Thanks again for any support you can provide me with.

FrankI know the "Two-Wire" brand router. It is sometimes sold with a DSL package. It does everything and when working, works good. MINE did not have a visible antenna, but it was good in the house.
It will appear as an AP (Access Point) to any PC or Laptop that has a 902.11 wireless adapter. The PC or Laptop would use the Infrastructure or the Ad-Hoc mode.
Router to router does not work because the router is a AP, not a client. But there are some exceptions to this rule. I think I had a Linksys router that wanted to spy on everyone. I could peek into neighbor's WINDOWS PC. (That is another story.)
Simple answer, no, you can not do it. I think. I have a Laptop with wireless on the desk where the PC is. Could I connect the PC to the Laptop and somehow pull the net through it? Yes, you can use either Ethernet or USB cross overs to tie two PCs together
My choice would be to buy a cheap dongle for such a short distance. Less wires on the desk. Sometimes you can find a bargain 802.11 USB stick that works good enough for a short distance, like inside the same office or home. Frank if you get this working I will buy you a beer!

piggy back wireless routers was the info you gave me and I say no freeking way....

I have been known to be wrong so no worries...the microsoft support page seems to think it can happen so maybe its possible.

would you just go buy a dang wireless for the odd computer out of the loop

see ya in chat..

Try the following:
In Vista, press the start menu, and type:
cmd
Right click on "CMD" and click "run with Administrative..."

In XP:
Press Start, and click "Run"
type CMD and press ENTER

Now, in command prompt, type:

ipconfig /release

then

ipconfig /renew

(These are basic troubleshooting steps for NETWORK connections) That didn't work I'm using XP
I called my ISP
and they said I could be missing a file
but I have no idea what file it could be
anyone know?Missing a file?

I think they are making stuff up. Still, if they did some diagnostics through you and really did DETERMINE that that is the case somehow, you can do the following:

Have your XP CD Ready, go to the Start Menu, and Run. Type:
sfc /scannow
Click OK/Press Enter.

LIKE I said though, I doubt it will actually work, since there isnt any reason for a missing file to really be related with this issue... but, if they think so, we can prove them wrong here. Any router involved?
Wired, or wireless connection?
What browser, version? Did you try another browser?
Does "ping" command work?try using this:

to fix a possible corrupted TCP/IP stack..Actually, the above program has two tools included:
- reset TCP/IP
- repair Winsock

Solve : Using 2 wireless routers?

the problem is, is that the new router doesnt broadcast as far as the old one.
could i connect the 2nd router to the phone line downstairs and set it up to be a 2nd wireless transmitter using the same settings and phone line.

in my school they have around 100 wireless routers all on the same network
could i do this at home?

i know i may have written it in a confusing way but mehQuote

i know i may have written it in a confusing way but meh

So, that excuses lack of clarity on your part?no, i guess it doesnt.
would you like me to rephrase my question?
or are you just going to provide unhelpful little titbits?OK -- I was unhelpful. I apologize.

The problem is, I don't know if you set up the wireless routers, that they will constitute one network. It would seem that if you set them up with the same parameters, that they should "present" as one network (like at your school).

It occurred to me that even if they don't, your hardware will have two networks from which to choose. I'd have to read more about it. At LEAST then, you could choose the network point giving you best signal strength.

That's not a good answer at all. I'm PRETTY sure someone has done this.

Solve : Loosing internet connection?

Answer»

My first time here. I have a problem and I'm confused. I have a laptop and wireless ROUTER and my internet connection works fine until my daughter comes home from college with her laptop. When she tries to do anything with her laptop, we LOOSE our connection. The only way we get it back is to shut off the modem and unplug the router for about twenty minutes. Then they both reboot and our connection comes back until my daughter tries to do anything on her laptop. We don't have this issue when her computer is not here. I am running XP while she runs Vista. Any suggestions? What does she do on her laptop?

If she downloads torrents or uses P2P programs (or is just downloading anything), all your bandwith may have been used up.We loose the connection immediately - yesterday all it took was her moving the mouse on her laptop. If she turns off the option to "search for internet connections" on her laptop, we dont loose our (home) connection - but she doesn't have any internet connection. Thanks for your advise. Is she trying to connect wirelessly / hard wired?

Alan <>< I'd be LOOKING for a new router.ale52, we have tried it both ways (hard wired and wireless) and each time we lose the connection and have to reboot the router and modem.Does she have any problems at her college? No problems while she's at college.HAVE YOU TRIED HARDCODING THE NETWORK ADDRESS ON THE LAPTOPprajwalsunwar

Solve : connection timed out?

Answer»

Hello all,

I have 2 COMPUTERS that i am trying to play some LAN games on but have not been able to get them to "see" each other. I can not see the other computers on the network to share files, folders or play games.

Computer #1 is a Windows XP machine that i have directly connected to a Netgear wireless router. I have renamed the workgroup to be WORKGROUP. It's using Local Area Connection 3 with a Marvell Yukon PCI ethernet controller #2.

Computer #2 is a Vista machine using WORKGROUP as its workgroup name. It's connected to the internet via the Netgear wireless router though the signal strength is usually quite poor even though the machines are not far from each other at all.

When trying to play games such as RED Alert 3 or The Lord of the Rings The Battle for Middle Earth across the LAN, computer #1 can not 'see' computer #2 within the game at all.

If i create a game with computer #1, the #2 machine does 'see' computer #1's game, however when i try to join that game, it says "connection timed out."

If i try to create the game using computer #2, then computer #1 can not even see the game on the list to even try to connect to it.

Does anyone know what i can do other then make sure both computers are using the same workgroup name?

Thank you for the help.Well, I have had so much trouble with wireless networking that I would tell you to avoid it. You will get much better game RESPONSE if you can have a DIRECT connection. The CAT-4 or CAT-5 wire is not expensive at all if you shop around. The hard part is getting the approval of other family MEMBERS to drill a hole in a wall to tie the two machines together. And the cable can go 300 feet with no problem. With wireless that is hard to do unless you have a clear shot. well, i guess try to disable your firewall on both computer. and try to install ipx/spx/netbios transport protocol on your network.

Solve : Unknown site listed as Internet in Network Places?

Answer»

I am running XP Pro with the latest SP. I have a broadban modem with several hard wired ports and one wireless connection. The wireless is secured and we are in the country so don't feel that is an issue. Yesterday I opened Network Places and found the following site listed as a computer under Internet: pss.gov.bc.ca. I deleted it and rebooted. I lthen logged onto my husband's user account and mine and Everything seemed to be ok. However, later that day when my husband opened his user account it LOADED the default screen and gave the message that the user account was "corrupt". We didn't do anything at that time but left the computer on.

Solve : Unusual Wireless Issue?

Answer»

Alright for background: I have an SB4100 surfboard cable modem (for a home network) linked to a 8port hardwired linksys router, port 1of8 was going into a a Belkin Pre N. This setup has been working fine the last 3 years... until the last month the wireless signal would drop, now its down permanently and failing to resolve an IP or DNS address from the 8 port linksys to the Belkin.

Now I should note throughout my trouble shooting we have 8 systems attached to the network, so I attempted to do the next bit of tests on 3 of those systems, AV's and Firewalls all disabled. Now I know about the interference from wireless devices in the 2-5ghz spectrum, no new devices were purchased since this started happening, and I have tried this on every channel 1-11... as well as testing everything and automatic and no encryption, mixed mode off, G only.

I have since used a backup netgear portable router and a WRT54GL linksys in place of the Belkin. Both fail just the same to find an address, however I can successfully connect to the router (wired and wireless) through the address bar. I have since tested both routers at my work, both work flawlessly.

I bring the two routers home thinking a faulty RJ45 cable, used a new one... nothing changed. I then restored every piece of equipment to factory defaults... nothing changed. Thinking it was then the 8 port linksys behind the router (even though systems wired to it were still connecting fine...) I ran a line directly from the cable modem to the newly purchased WRT54GL, and also with the older netgear... still no ip/dns address being found, tracert/ping all fail.

Having a spare surfboard modem I thought well surely it must be the cable modem... and hooked up the spare, however the same exact issue is happening. Now heres the weird PART, I busted out an old wired netgear router... it splits the signal fine to any system I want and I can connect. This only seems to happen when I attach a wireless router to any part of the network.

To humor myself further I LOGGED into the cable modem to check the status on the signal... the downstream power level and signal to noise ratio all seem within acceptable ranges; I'll post them here for further review.

Downstream: Value:

Frequency: 591000000 Hz Locked
Signal to Noise Ratio: 37 dB
Power Level: -4 dBmV

Upstream: Value:
Channel ID 5
Frequency 30000273 Hz Ranged
Power Level 47 dBmV

This is all on COMCAST, if anyone has any ideas about whats going on... I would appreciate it."I have since tested both routers at my work, both work flawlessly."

so both routers wireless work correctly with systems where you work?

"however I can successfully connect to the router (wired and wireless) through the address bar"

can you explain this exactly as I'm not quite sure what your saying here...

the wireless of both routers work correctly with wireless systems at your office??absolutelyjust for grins and giggles...try this:

tcp/ip stack isn't the issue (and this fix is golden too, I've used it for years) As a background I've got my A+, worked for HP, and do this sort of thing for a living. I've hooked up hundreds of networks, and I have never seen one perform like this (ever) in the 5 years I've been a tech.

But as stated earlier I used three test systems. M1210N (Windows XP), a Macbook (OSX Obviously), and a custom built desktop (Ubuntu 8.04 with KDE), all 3 systems cannot wirelessly connect.have you taken it to a single system and given it a forced ip(from the router range)
for wireless to see if it WORKS??just set a static IP, still doesn't recognize the wireless routers. Wired ONES still work fine... what I don't understand is why this is happening on two different cable modems with two fully functional wireless routers.Quote from: Saeixon on December 02, 2008, 07:40:36 PM

very strange...you have removed all your wireless cells/etc. from the house as a test also right!!?

moved setup to another room farthest from the one your in and tried it???Haha, sorry to hear that. I ended up leaving after I was basically told by boss to ship out refurbished units as new (theres a few class action lawsuits over it).

There were several times we performed initial service for a customer... I opened up the factory sealed box, and it was filled with someones data (usually from Europe and India).

I think, your best option is to back up your data, and reinstall Windows.
Hopefully, you'll get your connection back. This is a new installation. And that's why I'm surprised it's STILL not connecting.

I carried out the new installation when the former stopped connecting at the automatic update to sp2.I don't know, why I didn't think of it before, but maybe your network card is busted. Solve : IIS Time to be logged in milliseconds.?

Answer»

Hi,
A collegue of mine has written a complex web site for the companies use. It USES loads of aspx pages which return in modal dialog boxes. it works fine exept that when two people hit their mouse buttons at the same second for two different modal dialog boxes both users get the same page back.

We have isolated the line in the code but whilst my colleuge gets his head around what microsoft have done (always blame them), it's my job to get around the problem by tweaking the server, so that the users can stop getting confused.

IIS logging has shown us that the time of the IIS event is measured in HH:MM:SS and when two DialogContainer.aspx calls are made at the same second the problem OCCURS (sorry for the repetition).

My question is this (at last! they cry) Can IIS be made to deal in milliseconds rather than just seconds. You see, for two people to hit their mouse buttons at the same second is quite likely. However, at the same MILLISECOND it is a lot less likely.Hi, it's me again.

My colleuge has found that the system processes all of the DialogContainer calls which were requested in the same second as though they are the first of them which was entered.

To put that in english, say that 5 requests are made in the same second. It appears that the first request is PROCESSED 5 times and each time, the resulting page is sent back to the next user in the queue.

How does ASPX work in relationship with IIS? Does IIS run the show and kick off the called ASPX page once for each request in the queue at the start of the second and then wipe the queue clean at the end? Or does something more mysterious happen?

I am Baffled!

Solve : Network Card/Driver Issue?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 4700 running XP Home 2002 SP 2. I am experiencing difficulty with my Intel (R) Pro/100 VE Network Connection. It is currently displaying a YELLOW exclamation point in device manager. This problem occurred suddenly after a loss in power due to a storm. So far, I have tried the following:

* Uninstalled the driver and reinstalled from within the system.
* Uninstalled the driver and reinstalled Intel (R) Pro/100 VE Desktop Adapter (the Intel site says this contains the necessary driver for the Network Connection).
* Left the "broken" driver installed and used the previously mentioned Desktop Adapter to try and repair it.
* Used system restore to try to bring the system BACK to its proper state.
* Used Dell Driver Reset Tool to repair the driver.
* Uninstalled driver and reinstalled Dell driver.
* Uninstalled driver and reinstalled another generic Intel driver.
* Searched this forum for similar problems, and reset the stack and winsock.
* Tried to get more information from ipconfig /all, but all it would say is:
Windows IP Configuration

So far, each step has resulted in the same error: 10, unable to start.

Does anyone have any ideas what I could do to solve this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.Quote from: jondunc on June 18, 2008, 07:08:19 AM

This problem occurred suddenly after a loss in power due to a storm.

You have done all the stuff that I would suggest with the same network CARD.......since this happened after the storm, it could simply be fact that the NIC is shot ! have you tried any other NIC.

I believe Dell Demension has on-board NIC so you would want to disable the on-board NIC in BIOS before you put a new NIC in it.

CheersThanks for your reply. Is there a website or tutorial of some sort that could walk me through replacing the NIC?any luck yet???
Have you contacted Dell tech support for their services?
I use HP, but I've received valuable support from them, so Dell would probably be a GOOD resource for support as well.

Solve : New Router (Asus WL-500W) issues: won't connect to internet, even with wired?

Answer»

Alright... I just purchased a new router (Asus WL-500W) since my current one is *censored*. I install EVERYTHING, and bam... nothing. Not even my PC that is CONNECTED via ETHERNET cable is getting anything.

The only time anything happened was RIGHT after starting up the router, I tried yahoo.com... it came up once, then refused to do so again. I log into the router and check connection status... it will either say "ethernet cable is not connected" or more likely something about the ip ADDRESS, how it can't renew it, etc. The time it was actually working for about 15 seconds, their was actual connection status info.. like ip address and other info. Then it disappears very quickly.

So I'm not sure what to do. I tried running the quick setup that came on the installation cd a bunch of times, but no luck. I've tried different ethernet CABLES to make sure it wasn't a crap cable. The router light "WAN" just flashes a bunch of times after that initial 15-30 seconds, and the manual states that means there is a problem with the connection.

My old router still works fine when I plug all the cables back into that one.

Info:
Asus WL-500W
Running Windows XP
Comcast High Speed Internet

EDIT: I updated the router's firmware to the latest update. Would it help to flash it with DD-WRT or something like that?Take it back as it's defective.

Alan <>< You really think so? Cripes. Ah well, I'll try a little bit more.. and if nothing.. then off back to newegg it goesBad, brand new hardware happens.

Solve : DSL Internet on Windows XP Computer?

Answer»

I have been receiving a error message every 10 seconds on average at the lower right hand corner on my connections tab. It states Network cable is unplugged.
I've reinstalled my drivers , tried different ethernet CABLES and messed around with the whole ping thing. I really think its my modem because when i plug in my X box 360 to my modem is also disconnects me after a short period of time.
What could be the cause of this problem it worked fine for months now im struggling too get my homework done.
I also tried a different network adapter that was reccommend by "VERIZON" and nope not a fix that said the modem is fine but I STRONGLY disagree.
ps. everything is SET up right and IVE put in hours trying too fix it.Can you check to see if it's not a problem with the cable you're using?

Also, are the devices CONNECTED to the Modem or a Router?

Solve : Active Directory on NT 4 Domain??

Answer»

Hi,
We have an old NT 4 domain onto which I have placed two new Windows SERVER 2003 servers. So, the domain has a mixture of NT4 and 2003 servers.

I wish to implement Active Directory, DFS and FRS on the two new servers. Is that possible? I understand that NT 4 does not support this. So, I was wondering if I could just include the 2003 servers in this.

If it is not possible, can someone please tell me how to switch off the aplication log error about DFS replication failing?

Or windows 2000- W2K also supports active directory, and would be more usable for a NT4 spec machine. My problems stem from the fact that we have an old domain which is run by a Windows NT4 server as the domain controller. We also have one other NT server and three Windows Server 2003 servers. The Windows Server 2003 servers are complaining with the ATTACHED event (12317) regularyly occuring.

The microsoft solution is to fiddle with the Active Directory. Being an NT domain we have no active directory. How can I get this probem solved? Can I use DFS form the 2003 servers and ignore the NT servers? Can I implement Active Directory on the 2003 servers and ignore the NT servers?

Solve : ping external ip address (but with a caveat)?

Answer»

I want to ping an ip address on the www (10.9.8.100, we'll say). But! my internal network is set up with the same ip scheme/subnet (e.g. my computer is 10.9.8.1).

So when I put into the command prompt:
ping 10.9.8.100

it tries to ping 10.9.8.100 on the local network. How do I force it to check the internet?! Do I have to some how rout it or something?

Thanks,
-darrylHow is your network setup? How are you GETTING you addresses? Are you running a DHCP server or is your router handling things?

I have a dhcp server.
I have a dns server.
I have a router/modem/firewall device.

I have full PERMISSIONS for all of the devices (i.e. I am the administrator), and have the ability to kill the firewall for short periods of time to try things.

All on the same ip scheme (10.9.8.x). These are not public IP addresses, they are assigned within my local area network. Thing is, to change them would require an immense amount of work (there are 50-odd devices configured).

ALSO: forgot to note the fact that I AM able to ping normal www addresses (either via name or ip address), that should clear up confusion about me not being connected, firewall blocking ping requests, etc...I would suggset you change your addresses to a 192.168.0.XXX IP

but the problem with what you have is what you have already found out. Pinging or even surfing to IPs that match your subnet don't work right.

You can try a static IP on one of your machines and than be sure to change your default gateway. Also change your DNS settings on that machine to a server outside your network. This should work but you need to keep changing stuff back and forth everytime you want to ping something outside your network...
changing stuff back and forth is fine with me as long as it is only on 1 (or 2) machine(s).

there must be a way!

I tried routing a ping out through my gateway, and then out into the wilds of the internet... but having no clue as to what I was doing I didn't really get anywhere...

Is there something along these lines that might be possible?Question I have is if the destination address is public or private. Most ISPs will not route private IP space.

Say you had a VPN setup to another office that has the same subnet...

There isn't really a GOOD way to override the local (directly connected) subnet. The computer will always thinks this is on the local network and will not send the data to your router/gateway. You can try to enter a host route (/32) into the devices to try and redirect the path - this would be your only chance. Even if this works, your adding a static route on every device (some devices MAY have no way to support this). Best option would be to re-IP once side.

L2 VPN (bridging the broadcast domain) would be the only way to allow the 2 subnets to talk together without re-addressing the L3 on one side.I ran into the same problem myself in the past. No easy way around it:

I assume that the printer NEEDS to be kicked into action from the server. How do I do this?

This particular server is an NT server and I cannot work out how to operate the printer from it.

Thanks Make and model of printer?

Have you tried TURNING the printer off for a minute or two, then back on?It's an Olivetti d-Copia 300 KX.

We found out that the port NEEDED rebooting. It took a while to cotton on to what was needed though. But, the printer now works ok! Well, for now anyway!

You should contact your router manufacturer to change the channel of the router.

The Realtek RTL8139 hardly ever fails, but they can. Check CABLES. TRY other cable. Run the Wizard again on both computers. Be sure simple file sharing is on. Have common user accounts with password on both machines. Set it up for home network. Search for the other computer, pull your hair, curse, reboot the computer, yada yadda yaaaa... you know the DRILL.

Or get a one free trial of networkmagic at
http://www.purenetworks.com/

And no, I don't get a thing for the free plug.

Solve : netgear router wgr614 not working right?

Answer»

i am needing help with my router. I have a netgear router that wont connect to my server, it will only connect to other peoples in my area. I am ABLE to hook up my modem and connect to the internet that way. I also have tivo and it hasn't been able to connect either, so i know it's my router. I have had this router for several years and never had a problem, it just recently started acting funny. I have a macbook. and my router does not require a password or anything (basically no security on it).
please help.
Heath

Most likely, you need a new router.i thought if the router was DEAD i wouldn't be able to connect to any internet unless it was just through the modem.Okay, we need moar infoz!!

1) Can you GET to ANY WEBSITE AT ALL using the router? Yes or No
2) Have you tried upgrading the firmware on your router? Yes or No
3) Have you checked your router's settings (WAN, LAN, and wireless)? Yes or No
4) What do you mean by "my server"? Do you have a server at home or are you trying to connect to someone else's server? Is the server inside your network or outside?THANKS for trying but someone (on a different site) who didn't need all this complicated info was able to help me get it resolved!!

thanks for trying its working now!!! Thanks for POSTING back.
May we know, what the solution was?Quote from: nelsonrh on December 09, 2008, 08:07:03 PM

You probably explained it better to them, so they didn't need to ask for "complicated info."

Solve : iis web publishing?

Answer»

I have a computer set up with Windows Server 2003, and have set up the application server and am hosting an internal website on our network.

I would like for this website to be available via the internet (i.e. from outside of our network). The website works perfectly inside of our network, and I have it connected to the internet with no FIREWALL (bad security I know, but this is just for testing RIGHT now and it is not connected internally). It is connected with a public ip address, and when I ping this ip from a remote location it responds (I ran tracert, to verify that it was actually mine, and not somebody else's). Also, I have anonymous access enabled on the server, and it is read-enabled.

Yet when I try to access it from a remote location (url: http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/index.html), it cannot FIND the page.

thanks,
-darryltalk with your IT people and they can get it setup "securely" for use, then they can get
it setup for access from external sites....the road your going down is asking for trouble for your organization...IMO

Good LuckI am the IT people.

I appreciate your concern for our security.
So the Server 2003 box is connected directly to a cable/DSL modem or T1 CSU/DSU? If it's connected to a router, you need Port 80 open on the router and pointing to the Server 2003 box.It is connected DIRECTLY to the modem (i.e. no firewall)Does the modem itself have its own NAT router built in?

Solve : Help Changing My IP Address?

Answer»

I am having a hard time changing my IP address.
If any of you can offer step by step or suggest a SITE to go for specific help, that would be most appreciate.

I need a new IP because I would like to post on an NHL website. I have been banned because I sent out a survey thread asking about fanbase interests, for a project, and did not realize this was considered spam.
I tried to register with a new name, but due to it being on the same IP, this was not authorized, and every subsequent name I choose has not been allowed.

I have
1) Comcast High Speed Internet, connected by a linksys router, but can also be hard wired to the Comcast modem if needbe.
2) Windows XP.

Step so Far
1) I was able to change my ip address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1...yet this made NO difference.
-Why and what can I do?

Thanks!I can tell you how to do that step by step, or would you rather have a site where you can do that from?
The method might not be good for your computer security.

If you trying to change your IP address because you are just trying to access web based forums you may wish to attempt to configure your internet browser to use a PROXY server. This is actually the sort of information we don't provide here. We don't advocate bypassing blocks such as this. If you wish to gain access to the forum again, your BEST bet is contacting the admin and pleading your case.May I ASK why you want to do this?Quote from: Ivy on December 12, 2008, 09:07:52 PM

Can you give me step by step instructions to do this?I already tried...no luck...once banned...you are not allowed back...and by registering.
I like to talk about the NHL...and this is the board to do it on...so please...if I can get help changing the IP that would be excellent.I'm sorry. There are several easy ways to get around this, but it's not something we discuss here (Ivy is in the wrong for trying to aide in this). They had their REASONS for banning you and I'm sure they wouldn't be happy if we helped you undermine their authority. We get lots of requests like this (some for the same NHL forum, actually) and our response is always the same. I'm not trying to be a jerk here; this is just how we work. We respect other forums' policies, just like we expect people to respect our own.

And besides, changing your IP wouldn't actually work anyway. You would have to actually switch to another service provider.

Solve : USB Printer?

Answer» HELLO, I am dealing with a old Dell printer that is connected via usb. What is the most PRACTICAL way to convert to ethernet so I can connect to a ROUTER and ethernet network?

Thanks
CKI don't think you need to connect it to the router.
If you connect it to your computer, you can enable Printer Sharing, and all computers in the network should be ABLE to use the printer.

Solve : have some confusion on ATM, ISDN?

Answer»

hi friends,

I have had been a lot through number of stuffs available on different sites related to ASYNCHRONOUS transfer MODE and get understood what is it though.

but i didn't find anywhere any stuff which explain it with an example. i mean i want to know where actually it is used in real life that i can make it clear in my mind.

suppose i have an internet connection, now at which stages these technologies are used?
ISDN, Asynchronous TransferISDN is hardly even used anymore. Some small businesses may still use it, but they're better off with cable/DSL.

ISDN is faster than dial-up, but slower (and more expensive) than cable/DSL.

If I recall correctly (someone CORRECT me if I'm wrong), ATM can be used on WAN backbones. COMPANIES that have more than one office and Internet SERVICE providers uses this.

Solve : Unable to connect on one computer while able to connect on another!?

Answer»

I am USING a Cable Modem. Wirelessly routing to a Notebook which is able to connect to the internet. A desktop Running XP is connected via ethernet. This desktop is unable to LOAD any internet pages and while attempting to connect to MSN Messenger gives a DNS and Proxy error. I have disconnected the router, modem and restarted the computer with no change. I have connected the Notebook via ethernet and it is able to connect without problems. I have connected the desktop directly from the modem with no change. The notebook is running Vista. Regarding the desktop, under network connections LAN and Internet gateway are showing connected. Any help with this issue will be a big help!
I also pinged www.google.com with the responce "ping request could not FIND the host"
When Pinging the direct ip number the responce yeilds "ping Stats"Can you try ANOTHER Ethernet Cable as well as another port on the Router and see if it works?
Try resetting the router and modem as well. (Unplug their power sources for about 20 seconds)
If it doesn't work, go to Device Manager and look for any Yellow Question or Exclamation Marks.

Also, what happened before the problem? (downloads/installs/hardware changes/ect...)Quote from: Joe2008123 on December 08, 2008, 05:16:25 PM

DNS problem on the XP machine.

Start -> Control Panel -> Classic View -> Network Connections -> right-click "Local Area Connection" -> left-click Properties -> click "Internet Connection (TCP/IP)" -> click "Properties" button -> make sure "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS servers automatically" are selected -> OK -> Close.

Solve : Wireless bridging a belkin router?

Answer»

i have a belkin wireless g plus mimo router but i want to know how to use wireless bridging on it or make it have that feature. is there any FIRMWARE i can download? What is the EXACT model number of the router?

Check the router's instruction manual to see if it has that feature. If it doesn't, check Belkin's website for any firmware updates.

If OFFICIAL firmware won't allow it, then see if there's any custom firmware out there. I don't know of any for Belkin (then again, I'm not a fan of Belkin routers anyway--you get what you pay for).killerb are you saying that belkin routers are bad? i got mine for a little more money than dlink's and LINKSYS's models.I generally have bad experiences with Belkin (frequent power-cycling needed under heavy traffic, in particular)...

Solve : Internet keeps crashing computer BSOD?

Answer»

My internet and laptop have always worked until lately. I have used MULTIPLE wireless networks and it has always ADAPTED fine. I moved it to my girlfriends house and it worked for half an hour then restarted and KEPT restarting. I finally noticed i was getting the BSOD. My COMP would last half an hour at the most usually only like 5 minutes before it would crash after this, my internet worked fine too. I eventually shut my internet off on my laptop and my COMPUTER never had the BSOD happen and it works the way it did before. But once you turn the net back on it lasts awhile then crashes again. Any idea where to start? Thanks! What does BSOD say? What browser, version?
