Solve : What's the difference between built-in LANcard and PCI LANcard?? |
Answer» What's the difference between built-in LANcard and PCI LANcard? The "built-in" as you refer to it is a chip built into the motherboard...this is normally referred to as being "on board". Yap I know about that sir but my main is, is/are there difference between the two in TERMS performance?Using the onboard you're limited to the performance of the chip on that board... Using the PCI slot you can INSTALL any card compatible with your OS and depending on the NIC, actually obtain a better LAN connection... If you were to compare a 10/100 onboard chip to a 10/100 NIC PCI...then, no...there wouldn't be any difference..other than the fact you could swap the card out for another. Quote from: The Saviour on October 01, 2007, 10:02:42 PM Using the onboard you're limited to the performance of the chip on that board... What does this mean sir?If you had a 3Com LAN chip installed on the motherboard...you'd be limited to the performance of that chip...sir. Quote from: The Saviour on October 01, 2007, 10:55:39 PM If you had a 3Com LAN chip installed on the motherboard...you'd be limited to the performance of that chip...sir. What's this 3Com LAN chip sir?3com is a network card manufacturer. Saviour refered to it as an example, you may have an Intel network card, a Realtek network card etc. There is no quality difference between the integrated (on the motherboard) network card and a similar PCI network card. The only "advantage" is that the PCI card can be swapped, when the integrated network card can not. If you want to swap your integrated network card it would mean you swap the motherboard. This is the "only" difference important to note. |

Solve : What all would I need?? |
Answer» I know I'm going to sound goofy and I really am pretty comp literate... I just need some help figuring out what all I need share my broadband connection on two PCs. I have another PC besides this one that I'd like to hook up and I understand I need a wireless router... and some other thing to plug into this computer to link it with the wireless router.... right? What do I have to know about wireless routers and would any kind work or do I have to look for a specific one depending on my PC? Does anyone know where I could find some cheaper ones than at Best Buy? Thanks in advance guys1st of all you need to tell us what OS you use, more specific info.then we can choose a brand that suitable with it. of course you need a router,go for wireless if you can afford it,but cables seems good enough are the other pc have LAN port?then just get routerThe brand of router you choose is not dependent on your OS or the brand of PC. Its a good idea to buy the router and wireless card from the same manufacturer. My personal preference is Linksys. Have a look at newegg.com and you will get a good idea about prices. You can use "wired" routers or "wireless" routers. For wired routers, you need 1 straight ethernet cat 5e cables (it is hard to find something else, but you should stick to this kind of cable) and a network card (ussualy being already included on your motherboard). Plus, an ethernet cable between your router and your ISP equipment (but here it could be also a usb cable, it depends on equipment - my recommendation is ethernet cable when it is possible). For wireless routers you need only 1 wireless card for each computer and a single ethernet cable/usb cable for connection between router and ISP equipment.I forgot to tell, at wired routers you need for each computer 1 straight ethernet cable and a network card. (I forgot to say that, my apologies). And more, if you have to connect to an ISP equipment you will need another cable (I said this), ussually straight ethernet cat 5e.Thank you guys for replying... a girl needs some pc help sometimes Well... my OS is Win XP... And I was def. thinking wireless since the other PC is 2 STORIES down in my rec room in the house. I took a look at newegg.com and found some stuff... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833162017 Looks like that one has good reviews and isn't that expensive. All I'm going to use the other PC for is BROWSING so it really would need to have a super fast connection. What's the other "thing" called that I need to hook up to this computer in order for the 2 to I guess signal to each other...? Some kind of adapter or something right...? You might also want to look into an antenna gain to boost your router signal (based on the info from your last post) or a better router with a broader range. If the router is going to be placed two stories away from the other computers...you may experience some connection issues with the other wireless computers. Just make sure you get a router with a good signal.Wireless routers have very weak signal strength, for not creating interferences with different other equipments in your home (or neighbours homes ). I don't know what means "stories" (I didn't find the word on dictionary.cambridge.org). So, for a non-native english speaker, what's a "storie"? A building level (floor)? (Do you live in a palace? Should we call you "Your highness"? And "Princess"? ) My recommendation? Even if the other computers are in a far-away land in you sovereignity, you'd better use cable. You won't be so bothered with interferences (although they appear in network cables too), your network speed compared to a wireless network will be higher (a few times faster; even if you don't play games, you'll want at a certain moment in time to transfer some huge files between computers). For cable it's important not to pass nearby electric cables (where you have 110 V, if your domain lays in America), powerful electric motors. But those interfere MUCH more "efficient" with wireless signals (the powerfull electric motors disturb wireless networks). Instead of a wireless router, I would buy a wired router (it's very cheap - be careful, different models in the same range, different quality), a switch (for not hanging out 2 cables) and 4 ethernet straight cables. One longer (you will conect the router and the switch - this will be hanging OUTSIDE, most probably) and 3 shorter. One to connect your computer to the router, two to connect the other computers to the switch downstairs - I supposed you are a possesive princess that wants the router in her room. But I might be wrong (which is good). Because if you place the wired router in the same room with the other 2 computers, you won't have to buy a switch, it will be enough for you to buy a wired router and 3 network cables, ethernet cat5e straight cables. 1 will go upstairs to your room (conexion between the router and your computer), 2 will connect the other 2 computers to the router. Only one cable to hang outside, that one between your computer and router. All the cables mentioned here should be this kind, ethernet cat5e straight cables. Be careful at their length, they should be at long enough for your network to "rise". The downside of this approach? You completely destroy the "freedom" to move with your computer from place to place in your house (like a butterfly or bee) and have network access. So for network access your computers will be "pinned down" in specific locations, as you decide at "design". Another problem would be the cable arrangement. With wireless you have freedom to connect to your network anywhere in the wireless signal range, you can merilly change your place and you will still be able to connect to network, you don't have to hassle with computer network cables. BUT: network interferences (the worst nightmare), slow transfer rate (slow network speed) between computers. Recommendation for a wireless router: Linksys wrt54g. If you don't have interferences and you don't need network speed, I aggree that it is easier for you to set up a wireless network. If you have big problems with interferences... Well... "Network cabling" is written in your journal. Even if I spoke so much about cables and it seems "complicated", I recommend you a network based on cables. Less problems by far. But only if you don't need "freedom in computer movement". Long Live the Queen! P.S. If you want to use wired networks, you will need network adapter cards (that's it, simple) with ethernet connectors. If you want to use wireless networks you will need wireless network adapter cards. For each computer, one network card.First and foremost... I do prefer Princess. Thank you very much. My domain is currently in America... unfortunately. Second... sto·ry: Pronunciation Key - Spelled Pronunciation [stawr-ee, stohr-ee] –noun, plural -ries. 1. a complete horizontal section of a building, having one continuous or practically continuous floor. 2. the set of rooms on the same floor or level of a building. Courtesy of dictionary.com There are 2 computers total... viking, you seemed to think it's 3. One in my room upstairs, and one in the rec room. Thank you veryyyy much for the advice. I don't know about the wired... I'm not going to try and move the computers anywhere else... wherever I put them is where they will stay. But still, I don't know about all those cables.... bla bla.... As far as transferring some huge files from comp to comp though.... most likely not gonna happen either. I'm mostly just gonna use the other comp to browse sites, nothing more... so do you still think I would be better off getting a wired router? Going through all that trouble with the cables...? I don't even know how the heck I would get them all the way 2 stories down... although I don't think there's anything else in my house that would interfere... I just have regular stuff... nothing crazy, no powerful electric motors. Wireless for me, unless you're willing to come and hook all this up for me. Soooo... I would need the wireless router and 2 wireless network adapter card (for both of the comps)? And probably a cable or two? drejna, our beloved Princess , if you have 2 computers and 1 wireless router you will also need one wireless network card for each computer. My advice: wireless router and wireless network cards from the same producer. No network cable involved, except the one that comes from the ISP equipment - that should be pluged in the WAN port of your router. Summary: - 1 network wireless router - 2 network wireless adapter cards (one for each computer) - 1 network cable between ISP equipment and wireless router. Ussually, when the ISP connects your site to their network, also provides this cable. If they didn't it should be easy to find a brand new one, at a price that in Romania is 2-3 USD (it depends on length, I am refering to a cable length of 2 meters - almost 6 feet), but I heard that in some other places (like Italy) it is sooooooooooo much more expensive. I did not imagined that such a short cable would cost 6 euro! That's 8-9 USD. To answer to the network cable problem, here is a question: you wrote these messages from your highest room, in your tallest tower? Or someone did save you already? If you did wrote from your room, you already have the cable. If you had to pay a visit to your vengeful neighbour for internet access... Oh well... You need a cable I would gladly come to help you to set up a wired network But, there are a few thousands miles between your lovely stories and my humble person (Why do you say "unfortunately"?) Let me tell you a little bit more, in fact a little bit less now, after I heard that you have only 2 computers that compete to network access. If you want wired network, than you will need: - 2 network cables (Ethernet cat 5e - this is the standard now), their length depends on the distance between computers and router; a little longer, with 1-2 meters more than necessary - up to 6 feet more I mean - 2 network adapter cards - ussually, on newer computers (motherboards), they are included in the motherboard so I suppose you already have these - 1 wired router - 1 network cable between the router and ISP equipment (connected on the new router to the WAN port, you guessed right ) I agree, a cable hanging outside your windows, on the wall, will ruin the look of your imperial majesty. I don't have a clue about rooms positions, if they are on the same side of the building, if they are one above the other or they are in separate planes... That is one trouble with the wired networks, posing the cables. It is simple, but also it is a lot to work for finding a good position (behind false walls, they might need some holes to traverse floors/walls/doors/windows etc). Now I know what a story means I knew that "story" means a "fairy tale" or "description", I didn't know it also means a "floor". (http://dictionary.cambridge.org/results.asp?searchword=story&x=0&y=0) If you are glued with wireless network, try to find a SELLER that will receive back the products if you find that you can't use wireless network (I know, I told you already about interferences. Let me say it twice ). Try with wireless and if it does not work than switch to cable equipment (and the work involved). Why thank you sooo much viking. So, where exactly is this "few thousand miles" away place? Just being nosy. I'm from Romania, south-eastern Europe. Neighbours: Ukraine, Moldavia (former part of Romania), Hungary, Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro. A political map here: http://www.ezilon.com/map_of_europe.htm (with the note that Romania and Bulgaria are now members of the European Union). Oh, I forgot to tell: Transilvania is part of Romania. Romania is comprised of 3 historical provinces: Moldova = Moldavia, like the neighbour country - they were the same thing, Transilvania and Tara Romaneasca. In all the provinces the spoken language is romanian (the dialects differ too little, we are a small country). But hungarian language is spoken also in some parts of Romania. Of course, there are some other languages spoken (gipsy language = an indian dialect, rusian and some others) but in a much smaller scale. Dracula was a romanian king, Vlad Tepes (Vlad The Impaler), who lived in Tara Romaneasca between 1431-1476, and also ruled the country for a time. It is an important king in Romania because he obtained independence for Tara Romaneasca from the turks (a very expansive nation at the time).Wow... the huge explanation of Romania's geographical location was unnecessary. I'm from Bosnia... my temporary domain is in the States Hey neighbor Hellow than, beautiful neighbour. Stop bragging about you guys being in the EU already. Croatia is almost in... unfortunately I don't think Bosnia will ever be... lol... HORRIBLE economy. |

Solve : LAN line showing up on modem with one computer, but not the other?? |
Answer» Hello, Hello, The other computers, connected through the same cable, to the same port on router? As Lerninmore said, it could be a fault in one of several places: bad port on router, bad nic in pc. Show us here what is the result from the command (you have to type it in command prompt): ipconfig /all >c:\outipcfg.txt (after you launch the command, copy the content of c:\outipcfg.txt here)Well i'll work on trying a different cable, i've don't have any extras so i have to go through the process of taking one ALREADY in use. Trying to make the cords look neat really makes it difficult to switch them. I also thought about a bad router, i've had some problems with it before. So, when i tried to install the internet i hooked my computer directly to the modem, didn't go through the router, pulled the power on the modem for 30 SECS and tried to install. Right now i do have it hooked up to the router though, since it didn't install. In device manager the nic card it just says it's working properly under status, Here's that txt doc from command prompt: Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : eric-dd2012ef84 Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : NVIDIA nForce MCP Networking Adapter Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-00-00-00-75-60 Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.101 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Thursday, September 06, 2007 5:26:35 PM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Thursday, September 13, 2007 5:26:35 PM Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 7: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-0D-0B-5D-54-20 Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : Quote from: Anythingwill on September 09, 2007, 09:49:28 AM [...] Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-00-00-00-75-60 Bad physical address. Have you change it or it became so? How it reached that address, 00-00-00? This is not valid, and there are a few possibilities: - you changed it on Windows - faulty network adapter IP Routing Enabled...... Yes - your computer is used as a ICS computer, right? This is the response you got from the computer having trouble to connect to internet? I would check with a different network card. Yours actual seems to have defects. It does not have a valid MAC address (physical address) and ussually this is a sign of a malfunctioning network card.Oops, i made a really dumb mistake, I did that test on the wrong computer It still lets me know that my ethernet on this computer is defective, it would explain a couple things. but i'll do the test on the right computer in a sec here and post it for youOK, on the correct computer for ipconfig/all it just said "Windows IP configuration", and for 'c:\outipcfg.txt it said "'c:\outipcfg.txt' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file" Also, incase you want to know my Network Adapter it says i have a 1394 Net Adapter from Microsoft Quote from: Anythingwill on September 10, 2007, 02:02:33 PM That would be your problem then, the 1394 adapter is a firewire adapter not a network adapter. (The reason it is showing in your Network connections is because you can connect two computers using a firewire cable for some very fast file transferring.) Have you installed or removed anything recently?Well, i just plain reinstalled windows, and before that it was my friends computer, so i've never actually had it working myselfI thought we were getting somewhere with Deerpark's post, any more thoughts on it? Also, in network connections it says "1394 connection" connected at 400Mbps, only, once again, i can't actually get the internet up, and my interent cd says an error occurs while installing.Have you installed the network adapter's drivers? What network adapter card do you have? Integrated on your computer's motherboard? What type of motherboard?Well i thought i installed the drivers, it's a Shuttle FS51 v2, i went to, http://eu.shuttle.com/archive/en/ss51g_faq.htm, and i installed AGP driver for all operating systems (6118kB) VGA SIS Driver v2.07 for Win2000/XP (17144kB) LAN Driver for all operating systems (SS51G/FS51, 2585kB) USB2.0 Driver for 2000/XP (7147kB) Audio Driver Realtek/Avance Logic ALC650 Download Page VGA AGP Driver for SiS651 Chipset Then i had to install something from another site because one of the links didn't work i forget what it was, but i think it had something to do with video. These are all from the top of the page SS51G v1.0. i tried SS51G v2.0, but they didn't seem to work, and the top ones did. Perhaps should i try the bottom ones again? and actually my whole comp is a little messed, so which ones should i be downloading from that site to make sure i do it right?? Finally yeah, i'm just using the network adapter that's BUILT inIt depends, you say it's a FS51 version 2, but you installed drivers for version 1. So, for version 2, the drivers and other necessary downloads are: winflash BIOS update (only one from the two - I would sugest winflash version) agp driver vga driver audio driver usb driver usb patch network driver package (eventually the manual) |

Solve : Adding a wireless router to wired Cable 4 port router... will it work? How safe?? |
Answer» Hello all PC users! Firstly, just by connecting the wireless router to my hard-wired Cable eouter, will this give extra access to the wireless PC without interrupting the 2 cabled PC's I already have? Does her operating system matter at all? Alright First of all yes you can run the wireless off a port of your wired router. In my house we have a wired router, running off a port of our wireless router. It will not interrupt your 2 Pc's. You could also just use the one wireless router and eliminate using two. Also, You'd have to have a computer plugged into at one point to set up the connection. I'd SAY your best bet is to either use the one router (the wireless one), or run your router off a port off of the wireless one. Quote Also, SECURITY!! Just How safe is this? Does anyone have any issues I should be aware of before letting her hook into our network? i.e. will there be access to files, email etc on my PC through the wireless connection? Will there be access to material being downloaded on either PC by the others?I'm not sure what you mean by this do you mean your flatmate accessing your files using the wireless, or do you mean "hackers, or do you mean both. Your flatmate would not be able to access any files if he isn't in the same workgroup as you (I'm not completely 100% sure but unless he is really skilled with computers I doubt he could do it). And im not exactly sure what would happen if a hacker tried to access your computer from the wireless but make syre you do what kbm292 said and put a password on the wireless connection. Thats great... thanks. What is WPA compared to WEP?Here is a website of interesting reading to answer your questions. WPA vs WEP Quote from: M1CH431 on September 17, 2007, 02:56:11 PM Your flatmate would not be able to access any files if he isn't in the same workgroup as you (I'm not completely 100% sure but unless he is really skilled with computers I doubt he could do it). False. If he has physical access to your network, than he has access to all your shares, no matter what workgroup he uses. How skilled is your mate? Does he do this kind of troube, he is ussually "stealing" someone else computer information? WEP/WPA don't help in this case. But they help if another person wants to connect to your wireless router, without your aprouval. But the flatmate is trying to run off the wireless.Ok, so we will consider him part of network, and your main concern is outside access to your local area network (to your network, in short). Set up properly the wireless router security. I recommend to enable WPA mode on the wirelles router (if your flatmate's computer network adapter supports this security schema). English QUESTION: I said "flatmate's computer network adapter" and to me it seems to be a little too long and fuzzy. Is any other way in which I could say the same idea? |

Solve : Wireless & Wired Home Network? |
Answer» I have 2 computers, one that is hooked up to my 2Wire router through CAT5 and one that is using a Lixus wireless card. Both can get out to the internet. The problem is that I can not get the two of them to communicate to each other. I am trying to get Diablo to play over the network using IXP so that my son and I can play. Can anyone please HELP!you could just connect the 2 computers together witha cross over Ethernet cable. Or re they both in the same workgroup? can you see the other pc in you network places ( click network places and then workgroup computers )I am sorry Lerninmore, you gave wrong directions (LE: although I tend to agree with your opinion regarding a cross over cable - perhaps he has some fragmenting problems in his actual configuration?). He has network CONNECTIVITY, he does not have to change cables, to check network workgroup etc. He just has to check if protocols are installed and no firewall is blocking their communication. |

I have a Toshiba laptop ( Win XP) and a desktop (Win 98), on a D-Link wireless network, but no bluetooth. Nokia sells a connector CORD for $50. Does not sound right to me. Can I get something for the Toshiba to ENABLE it to connect to my phone's bluetooth? |

Solve : Ethernet networking between two pc's? |
Answer» Over the past ten years or so I have been able to navigate the increasingly complex world of computing, mostly on a personal level as the companies I have worked for have not been very computer literate(I am in horticulture). I' m reasonably adept and intelligent and moreover persistent when encountering the unknown. But this seemingly simple procedure of connecting two laptops together via ethernet, through a Linksys switch has me bamboozled. |

Solve : Turning WI-FI to an Ethernet cord? |
Answer» Hi, Nice, you got a PS3?I do the same thing with my Xbox, accept I use a router and A cat5 cable. That's basically the same thing, but the OP doesn't have a router, they have a wireless connection to their neighbour's router. So a Cat5 cable and router is the same thing without the wireless in between.Alright I tried connecting my laptop to my PS3 with a crossover cable (which I'm assuming a Cat 5E cable is the same thing as an ehternet cable), and clicking on share internet last night. And I got little to no connectivity through the LAN connection, and my PS3 would time out when it was requesting the IP address. Although I did see both were doing work becasue the lights were flashing on each. I believe the PC is sending a single but nothing is being recieved. If that means anything. So do I need to try buying a router, and connecting it through that way? If so what router should I buy?So you plugged a crossover cable, which is the same as an Ethernet cable which is the same as a Cat5E cable, into the PS3 and laptop? And then shared the wireless connection with the PS3 via the Ethernet connection?Ok on to the next question. I figured it out how to connect the crossover wire and I can run the internet browser on my PS3 but it won't let me connect to the Play STATION Network. So I called Sony yesterday and they said the only way I can make it work is by getting a router. So I bought a router and it won't let me set it up without a password. But all I'm trying to do is turn this wireless internet into a wire, any suggestions on installing the software or how to make this work? What Sort of Router did you get? Try this: Plug you PS3 into the router, and plug your laptop into your router. Then Enable internet connection sharing. Thats what I do with my router hopefully it shall work with you. |

Answer» Hello everyone!!! Unfortunately, the Fn key cannot be remapped or stuffed with a keyboard buffer stuffer. It produces no scancode of its own and only modifies the scancode of the key that gets pressed with it. It does it at a low level and its function is not seen by windows. I'm going to assume that means I'm screwed It means you won't find another KB with an Fn key, and there's no way to emulate it. At least, I think that's what is meant. I'd try getting in touch with Dell, see if they can replace your KB for you. Quote I'm going to assume that means I'm screwed Maybe, maybe not. If it is built in, you could try disabling it and use a PCMCIA card. It would not be dependent on the Fn key combo but would use its own drivers.hi possibly suggestion is to hold the alt key down and using the numeric keypad type in the char (ascii) equivelent of the fn plus f2 key. my guess would be hold down [altkey] then type 0000 0105 it MAY or may not work but will not destroy anything if it does not - alternately have a look at http://www.usnetizen.com/fix_capslock.html which talks about remapping XP keys via the reg edit file!! (should be fun!) but if you go this route have the valium, coffee and alarm clock by your side for it will be a long session! know anything about emails that do don't do don't pick up on a radio / broad band link? Quote remapping XP keys via the reg edit file!Won't work. You have to edit the scan codes. Fn does not have one.I bet you that Dell has a utility that you can download that can control this. Look up your laptop on Dell's website. The Fn combos can usually be emulated. (It's the physical wireless on/off switches that are the real problem.) |

Solve : My Wireless is messed up? |
Answer» Well I brought down my modem so I could connect but today my wireless stopped connecting. It would hold the SIGNAL for awhile then it would lose it (the router is upstairs and the wireless card is down here in the cpu), so I would go restart the router and or Modem and it would work FINE for a while. About 20 minutes ago it stopped working and WHATEVER I did didn't seem to help. If someone can help me reconfigure or anything, it would be appreciated. Why no SP2 on that machine? That is the first thing you should do and then post back. Then from a command prompt on the downstairs machine type "ipconfig /all " without the quotes and hit Enter. Post your results.I figured out a solution I just run Wireless Zero CONFIGURATION everytime I get on |

Solve : internet is wayy to slow? |
Answer» it's me again. i mess up my computer once a week, i know it's sad. well this time it's not a virus. at least i don't think it is. here's the problem: my internet works, but has been moving way slower then it usually does. i first noticed the problem while using limewire. i was downloading songs and i started noticing error messages saying that a firewall is blocking the connection. well, i haven't changed my firewall settings (i use trend micro) , but i checked just to make sure and everything was normal. i added limewire to the exception LIST, just to be safe but it still doesn't work. plus, the firewall has never affected limewire before. and a few hours after the limewire incident, i began to notice that every website i went to took forever to load. just getting onto these message boards has taken about 5 minutes. i haven't installed any new programs lately, and aside from downloading some songs and movies i haven't changed anything. no spyware, and no viruses are appearing when i do the scan. oh, and i can't do system restore because i forgot to turn it on and i now have no points to restore it to. can anyone help?oh wait... i do have a virus. MS02-039_SQL_SERVER_RESOLUTION_EXPLOIT. i'll try to get rid of it, but i may still need some help. if that's what's causing this problem. lol, if my computer were a person, it would have the crappiest immune system in the world. i always have viruses, spyware, ect... *sigh*.Limewire and other P2P is a great way to get malware on your computer. What types of things are you downloading?List your OS and protection programs...it's obvious you are under-manned in that department.i think the only program that i have is trend micro pc-cillin. i find that it works well and gets rid of all my spyware, but sometimes i'll get a virus that it can't delete. also, i get alerts for viruses, but then i do the scan and it says there's NOTHING. to answer the other question about what i download, it's mostly music and sometimes an episode of a tv show or a movie. i'm very careful though, and when limewire stopped working yesterday the first thing i did was scan my recent downloads. but they were clean, and i really don't remember downloading anything strange. if anyone can provide a tip for fixing limewire, it would really help. i can live with slow internet for a while, but i miss my music downloads already. i'm seriously doubting the problem is firewall related, since i haven't changed my firewall settings and they have never affected limewire before.nevermind. i just fixed the problem. turns out it was some stuff i installed earlier in the week that was messing everything up. i know uninstalling things should have been the obvious solution right from the start, but when it's 3 am and i'm on the computer with too much CAFFEINE in my system i don't think very clearly. so thanks so much to everyone who was willing to help. i'm sure i'll be back with a new problem sometime in the near future.... Answer» HELLO there, so I have a linksys wireless card in my pc, that has been working fine for years, then all the SUDDEN stopped, when I try to use the internet, I get unable to find page. However when I check my signal , it says i'm connected, I have tried to uninstall the hard and sorfware, but could not find the program on my computer, also the original DISC will not install, not even when I tried on my roomates computer, whats going on here?Cards like all other hardware can and will GO bad eventually... But to find out for sure get on another machine and VISIT the manuf. site for the drivers. Then remove the card in Add / Remove hardware. Power down and physically remove the card and re-seat it. Re-boot and Windows will detect it...point it to the new drivers you just DLoaded and install. |

Solve : Wireless getting on my nerves - other network? |
Answer» Is there a way to only connect to ONE network, and not have Windows recognize others? Change the subnet mask.I would advise that people generally don't do this, unless they understand how subnet masks work, and then only with the help of a LAN calculator...OK, I'm not going to fiddle with it. So is there something I can do to ignore this other network? Is there something I can ask them to do with their router or anything?Find the options for your wireless connection (right-click; properties). Look at the Wireless Networks tab, and "Preferred Networks". Can you figure out what to do? (NB This MAY not work if you have an extra program installed that manages your wireless connection. You will be notified if that is the case.)No other program manages my wireless connection. That was the first thing I tried though, I did say: Quote I've tried removing the offending network from my list of networks and moving it lower than mine, but nothing works.Sorry if it didn't come across right, but that's what I meant. I moved the network lower in the list than mine, and I removed it from the list completely. Thanks for the suggestion though. |
