Solve : unblocking a site??

Answer»

i used a COMPUTER which is a part of a server? the server block some site... (like friendster.com)
it is possible to unblock the site or  open those website which is block by the server using only the computer that im using?
if its possible, how can i unblock or open the website?

It depends on how it is BLOCKED that site. For EXAMPLE, if it is blocked in the firewall you won't be ABLE to unblock that; it can be done only with the firewall. But you may CIRCUMVENT it, the user may connect to a proxy server outside your local area network and from there he can access any site he wishes - I doubt that the firewall will deny traffic to that proxy server. If those sites are blocked by the network administrator you should not try to reach them.
Unless you have another job lined up...

Solve : What's the difference between built-in LANcard and PCI LANcard??

Answer»

What's the difference between built-in LANcard and PCI LANcard?

Is there advantage and disadvantage? The "built-in" as you refer to it is a chip built into the motherboard...this is normally referred to as being "on board".

A PCI Lan Card or NIC is a separate card installed in a PCI slot on the motherboard which can easily be removed. QUOTE from: The Saviour on October 01, 2007, 09:50:29 PM

Yap I know about that sir but my main is, is/are there difference between the two in TERMS performance?Using the onboard you're limited to the performance of the chip on that board...

Using the PCI slot you can INSTALL any card compatible with your OS and depending on the NIC, actually obtain a better LAN connection...

If you were to compare a 10/100 onboard chip to a 10/100 NIC PCI...then, no...there wouldn't be any difference..other than the fact you could swap the card out for another. Quote from: The Saviour on October 01, 2007, 10:02:42 PM

What does this mean sir?If you had a 3Com LAN chip installed on the motherboard...you'd be limited to the performance of that chip...sir. Quote from: The Saviour on October 01, 2007, 10:55:39 PM

What's this 3Com LAN chip sir?3com is a network card manufacturer.
Saviour refered to it as an example, you may have an Intel network card, a Realtek network card etc.
There is no quality difference between the integrated (on the motherboard) network card and a similar PCI network card.
The only "advantage" is that the PCI card can be swapped, when the integrated network card can not. If you want to swap your integrated network card it would mean you swap the motherboard. This is the "only" difference important to note.

Solve : Something weird about my internet during wow?

Answer»

Well, my stationairy computer broke, so I'm currently on my Laptop.
I've NEVER tried before but now i felt like playing wow, and when i did. I logged in NORMALLY and found it to be a bit laggy, had 20.000 ms
After a few seconds i got dc
This keeps happening at MY internet, but not at my friends.

Is there anything i NEED to do? Since wow worked perfectly on my stationairy ..Initially I was going to say it has something to do with the hardware in your laptop (e.g. not the best video card). However, since you indicated that it works fine at your friends house and not your house. I'm a little stumped.

Have you tried this more than once? Maybe the SERVERS were busy at the time you tried it or you were in a populated part of WOW (e.g. the auction house).

Are you using a slower internet connection at your house?Yes that's what I thought too, but when it suddenly worked at 2 of my friends places I got suspicious, it's probably my internet then. Or maybe just unlucky, i have 8mb by telia and my friend has some lameass internet on 0.5 mb so, that shouldn't be a problem.
If you have any solution that might help me please post them, I'm going to try to log from home and ILL write the result here.

Thanks

Solve : i need some help with my download speed please?

Answer»

Hi ive jst been off the phone to my broadband supplier sky and one of the senior advisors asked me to come to this site as he said someone would be able to help me

iv got a 6mb connection but i am not even downloading at 100kb/sec ive no even touched that speed and he said something about getting a program to configure my laptop to recieve and optimum speed.... i want to know where can i download this freeware and which is the best program to RUN
he said it was an executable file that will run on its own and fix all my mtu problems please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Ok 1st things 1st .....

Your download speeds and connection speeds are completely different ... yes there are a few tweaking programs out there to optimize your speed ..... but i ASSURE you it wont make a difference , if sky are telling you you need to find this program ... then there clearly sending you on a wild goose chase ..... because they are not being straight with you ... i have a 10mb connection and i only download at 100kbs maybe 200 sometimes .... you can take a speed test and you could also write of to sky that you are not happy with there services..... i did the same with tiscali and they gave me 4 months for free due to the speeds that where coming through my phone line ...... where not 100% correct.....

www.speedtest.net   <><< take a test there and calculate how much is missing from your speed now these test are never 100% positive and no-one ever receives full connection and upload speeds so bare that in mind .....

TONY

Sky should do a better support. Why should we teach you how to change MTU value (it is very-very simple)? Why would they ask you to do that?
What it is written in your contract with them? Those 6 Mbps are granted or are a MAXIMUM? How well works for other sky customers with the same contract? I suppose you are a "home user" and not a company.
I have no idea about the Sky connections - although I admit I could do a "research" on the web about; but why? You could do the same, even better.

i had a cable idiot out here yesterday who literally handed over a usb cable and a DISK and said 'you have a 50/50 shot of it WORKING out for you'...what the heck is that?? i tried the cable w/disk and couldn't even get into it because for some reason my old modem didn't even have adobe installed - went to install it and came up with an error message..

Solve : Question....?

Answer»

the COMPUTER that im using in surfing the net is a part of a domain and it has an extra lan card.
if i want to connect a laptop in this computer for local networt, for me to share all the files. does it possible to share with the laptop the connection with the net?If domain means that when you log on you have to choose between local computer and domain than please talk with the network administrator. He has to know what happens in his network. You can do what you ask, but also, if you don't SPEAK with him, you may search for trouble.

Otherwise, a proxy server on your surfing net computer will solve the problem (an example of FREE proxy server:  Jana Server - http://www.janaserver.de/start.php?lang=en) - if surfing the net is the only demand for the shared link.
If you also want to share files, play games, use some other programs with no proxy SETTINGS than you NEED a NAT server (like ICS).  It is impossible for other computers to access the shares on your laptop if you don't set up propely port redirections.

Solve : Wireless not aquiring IP address?

Answer»

Hi, I was wondeing if anyone may be ABLE to help with this.  My laptop normally finds and connets to WIRELESS networks without a problem.  However, at my home my laptop is failing to aquire an IP address.  I have tried turning the FIREWALL off and it makes no difference.  I have tried repairing it but it doesn't work.  I don't think there is a prolem with the wireless because another laptop is connecting to the network.  If anyone has any ideas on how to solve this then let me KNOW! Thanks!
What do you have installed, as far as a firewall goes?I have windows firewall. It seemed fine with other wireless networks! When did this start?

Did you make any recent changes or additions to the wireless network?

Have you ran the Wireless Network Toubleshooter?Your laptop detects the wireless network? How do I run the troubleshoot thing? I have tried the "repair" feature.

Yeah, it is detecting the newtork and tries to connect and then says auiring network address and doesn't ever connect.  As far as I'm aware nothing has changed with the wireless! What firewall is installed on the computer hooked to the wireless router? It is McAfeeLeave the computer running and reboot the router. Disconnect the router power for about 10 seconds, then reconnect. Wait about 30 seconds and SEE if it acquired an IP.If it doesn't acquire the IP...then follow this link:  Windows XP

Solve : Sharing Network?

Answer»

I want to SET up a network on my computer but I never created one before, I have a ethernet cable connected from the computer to the router, and an even longer ethernet cable connected from the router all the way downstairs in my room. I want to ACCESS all the files on the C drive on the upstairs computer, use remotedesk top to control upstairs computer, and printer SHARING to use upstairs printer...

The image bellowshows what I have done sofar, on the upstairs computer, but I can't find the specific drive downstairs on my laptop :S

Please can anyone offer me a hand thanks ^.^
-benjy-Okay I managed to find the drive on the downstars laptop, but PROGRAM files and documents are restricted how do I get full access???You need an user account with the necessary rights to access those shares. It can be done in a few ways.
My recomendation: create a common user account on both computers (same name and password). Share the folders you need and give rights to that user.

For a remote desktop program I recommend you RealVnc (it's free). You can use RealVNC, or you could use the remote desktop built into Windows XP Professional (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications). It might also be in XP home, but I haven't tried it in that version.

Solve : how to use proxy for all applications?

Answer»

hi
i have a PC(OS:WIN xp sp2 pro)
i use a proxy for internet,
for use of IE or firefox i change thier proxy and set my own's proxy
my problem is here :i can use this proxy for only internet browser and some appa that they have proxy property
but i want set this proxy for any applications on WINDOW that they use the proxy for connecting
how i set proxy for windows then i dont have needed to set proxy for EVERY app

Do a search on TCP Tunnel. You need to have CONTROL over the proxy though. If you're just using an open http proxy this wont work and I honestly don't think theres anyway it COULD work.

Solve : Not sure if a Norton or a network problem?

Answer»

Two days ago my daughter went to London do a work placement for a YEAR. She is in a house that has Sky wireless broadband. She has accessed the net however she can't get on MSN messenger as she gets the following error message

'Norton Internet Security has blocked access to this restricted site. Blocked categories interact/mail to change this setting, the supervisor MUST remove this site restriction from the parental control section'

She did not have this restriction on prior to going to London when she was at Lincoln Uni does anyone know how you remove this so she can get on MSN messenger.  She has tried to change the settings but it says that it needs to done by the supervisor.  Anyone know how she can change this ??

It is her computer wright??
Well it can also be blocked by the person who OWNS the wireless Internet.
So ask him or boot into SAFE mode.
When I safe mode you can get into the admin account and from there you can change the settings of the Norton Firewall.

Hopes this does the job.

Jonas This makes sense as she has been using the laptop with no problem for two years and suddenly when moving to London and using the Sky wireless broadband the PC suddenly starts acting like thisWell so first go for the OPTION to ask the owner.
Let us know if that did the job.

Solve : Drivers for MB installed.... not getting internet??

Answer»

I have a Nice and fast system, but this is killing me. i re installed my nVidea drivers 2 DAYS ago and found the new driver off nVidea was not activating AA right, so i uninstalled and reinstalled, no go, then finally out of despiration, installed my OLD Driver that came with my Vid-card (7600GS)

Another problem, ASUS MB Driver was all JACKED, so i had to riinstall that one, i uninstalled it, re installed it, and i think there was an issue during the installation, anyhow, my ASUS InstALL .EXE only had and installed audio, RAID, and i believe a USB 2.0 driver, but it didnt install eThernet???

me and my DAD (the computer wix) found a .exe. file burried deep within the Drivers directory.... no luck, the weird thing is is it shows me as connected n out hard line but i juet get the despised "server not found" when i open FireFox.....

is there an ethernet Driver out there?

im really kind of PO'd right now, can someone help? thanksI would use the original drivers that shipped with both the MBoard and video card and re-install them, re-start and go from there...

Solve : NT4 scheduled task not running.?

Answer»

Hello all,

I realize that NT4 has been on M$ DL for a while, but we are trying to phase out our two servers. Part of which requires a backup script to be run at night. Which currently doesn't run, unless double clicked while logged in as admin. I checked this article http://www.windowsitpro.com/Articles/ArticleID/20769/20769.html?Ad=1

From there I can effectively rule out...
Reason #1 because, I set the task to run as Administrator and use the password for the account
Reason #2 because, I do not use %temp% variables anywhere in the vb script. (As far as I can tell.)
Reason #3 article is cut off because I am not a subscriber.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this or can point me in a direction, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks!VB script? BAT script?

I did not have problems with scheduled tasks (but this does not means that they are not).
Your scheduled task is launched? What error do you get? Where the script stops?VIKING thanks for the reply!

Believe it or not, the server I was working from was on the wrong time and date, so I was scheduling the job to run in the past. Though I had discovered that my vb script would fail to backup because it could not map the network drive correctly.

So far I am looking into creating a .bat file to map the network drive on the NT4 server and copy the needed files from the NT4 machine into the 2003 server through the map.I'm tired now, I am preparing to sleep 1-2 HOURS (and wake up at 7pm).
I don't recall a reason for which you will have to create a network map and than copy files. Why can't you just copy the files into that share? With no network mapping?[LE]
Later Edit:
To create a network map drive.
Let's SUPPOSE you wish that the share \\station1\TheShare to be mapped in the L:

net use L: \\station1\TheShare

Pay attention at network USER rights for accessing that share.
See a little more here: http://www.cae.wisc.edu/site/public/?title=nt4netuse .
[/LE]Thanks Viking!! I think I have it all working now!

Though that might change right when we get everything switched to the 2k3 servers. I guess I should look at it as job security.  You are most welcomed.
No, I don't think you will have to change big DEAL in the script or scheduled task with the windows 2003 servers.

Solve : What all would I need??

Answer»

I know I'm going to sound goofy and I really am pretty comp literate... I just need some help figuring out what all I need share my broadband connection on two PCs. I have another PC besides this one that I'd like to hook up and I understand I need a wireless router... and some other thing to plug into this computer to link it with the wireless router.... right?

What do I have to know about wireless routers and would any kind work or do I have to look for a specific one depending on my PC? Does anyone know where I could find some cheaper ones than at Best Buy?

Thanks in advance guys1st of all you need to tell us what OS you use, more specific info.then we can choose a brand that suitable with it.
of course you need a router,go for wireless  if you can afford it,but cables seems good enough
are the other pc have LAN port?then just get routerThe brand of router you choose is not dependent on your OS or the brand of PC. Its a good idea to buy the router and wireless card from the same manufacturer. My personal preference is Linksys. Have a look at newegg.com and you will get a good idea about prices. You can use "wired" routers or "wireless" routers.
For wired routers, you need 1 straight ethernet cat 5e cables (it is hard to find something else, but you should stick to this kind of cable) and a network card (ussualy being already included on your motherboard). Plus, an ethernet cable between your router and your ISP equipment (but here it could be also a usb cable, it depends on equipment - my recommendation is ethernet cable when it is possible).
For wireless routers you need only 1 wireless card for each computer and a single ethernet cable/usb cable for connection between router and ISP equipment.I forgot to tell, at wired routers you need for each computer 1 straight ethernet cable and a network card. (I forgot to say that, my apologies).
And more, if you have to connect to an ISP equipment you will need another cable (I said this), ussually straight ethernet cat 5e.Thank you guys for replying... a girl needs some pc help sometimes

Well... my OS is Win XP...

And I was def. thinking wireless since the other PC is 2 STORIES down in my rec room in the house.

I took a look at newegg.com and found some stuff...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833162017

Looks like that one has good reviews and isn't that expensive. All I'm going to use the other PC for is BROWSING so it really would need to have a super fast connection.

What's the other "thing" called that I need to hook up to this computer in order for the 2 to I guess signal to each other...? Some kind of adapter or something right...?

You might also want to look into an antenna gain to boost your router signal (based on the info from your last post) or a better router with a broader range.  If the router is going to be placed two stories away from the other computers...you may experience some connection issues with the other wireless computers.

Just make sure you get a router with a good signal.Wireless routers have very weak signal strength, for not creating interferences with different other equipments in your home (or neighbours homes ).

I don't know what means "stories" (I didn't find the word on dictionary.cambridge.org). So, for a non-native english speaker, what's a "storie"? A building level (floor)? (Do you live in a palace? Should we call you "Your highness"? And "Princess"? )

My recommendation? Even if the other computers are in a far-away land in you sovereignity, you'd better use cable. You won't be so bothered with interferences (although they appear in network cables too), your network speed compared to a wireless network will be higher (a few times faster; even if you don't play games, you'll want at a certain moment in time to transfer some huge files between computers). For cable it's important not to pass nearby electric cables (where you have 110 V, if your domain lays in America), powerful electric motors. But those interfere MUCH more "efficient" with wireless signals (the powerfull electric motors disturb wireless networks). Instead of a wireless router, I would buy a wired router (it's very cheap - be careful, different models in the same range, different quality), a switch (for not hanging out 2 cables) and 4 ethernet straight cables. One longer (you will conect the router and the switch - this will be hanging OUTSIDE, most probably) and 3 shorter. One to connect your computer to the router, two to connect the other computers to the switch downstairs - I supposed you are a possesive princess that wants the router in her room. But I might be wrong (which is good). Because if you place the wired router in the same room with the other 2 computers, you won't have to buy a switch, it will be enough for you to buy a wired router and 3 network cables, ethernet cat5e straight cables. 1 will go upstairs to your room (conexion between the router and your computer), 2 will connect the other 2 computers to the router. Only one cable to hang outside, that one between your computer and router. All the cables mentioned here should be this kind, ethernet cat5e straight cables. Be careful at their length, they should be at long enough for your network to "rise".
The downside of this approach? You completely destroy the "freedom" to move with your computer from place to place in your house (like a butterfly or bee) and have network access. So for network access your computers will be "pinned down" in specific locations, as you decide at "design". Another problem would be the cable arrangement.

With wireless you have freedom to connect to your network anywhere in the wireless signal range, you can merilly change your place and you will still be able to connect to network, you don't have to hassle with computer network cables. BUT: network interferences (the worst nightmare), slow transfer rate (slow network speed) between computers. Recommendation for a wireless router: Linksys wrt54g. If you don't have interferences and you don't need network speed, I aggree that it is easier for you to set up a wireless network. If you have big problems with interferences... Well... "Network cabling" is written in your journal.

Even if I spoke so much about cables and it seems "complicated", I recommend you a network based on cables. Less problems by far. But only if you don't need "freedom in computer movement".

Long Live the Queen!

P.S. If you want to use wired networks, you will need network adapter cards (that's it, simple) with ethernet connectors. If you want to use wireless networks you will need wireless network adapter cards. For each computer, one network card.First and foremost... I do prefer Princess.    Thank you very much. My domain is currently in America... unfortunately.

Second... sto·ry:

Pronunciation Key - Spelled Pronunciation [stawr-ee, stohr-ee]
–noun, plural -ries.
1. a complete horizontal section of a building, having one continuous or practically continuous floor.
2. the set of rooms on the same floor or level of a building.

Courtesy of dictionary.com

There are 2 computers total... viking, you seemed to think it's 3. One in my room upstairs, and one in the rec room.

Thank you veryyyy much for the advice. I don't know about the wired... I'm not going to try and move the computers anywhere else... wherever I put them is where they will stay.    But still, I don't know about all those cables.... bla bla.... As far as transferring some huge files from comp to comp though.... most likely not gonna happen either. I'm mostly just gonna use the other comp to browse sites, nothing more... so do you still think I would be better off getting a wired router? Going through all that trouble with the cables...? I don't even know how the heck I would get them all the way 2 stories down...  although I don't think there's anything else in my house that would interfere... I just have regular stuff... nothing crazy, no powerful electric motors.     Wireless for me, unless you're willing to come and hook all this up for me.

Soooo... I would need the wireless router and 2 wireless network adapter card (for both of the comps)? And probably a cable or two?   drejna, our beloved Princess , if you have 2 computers and 1 wireless router you will also need one wireless network card for each computer. My advice: wireless router and wireless network cards from the same producer. No network cable involved, except the one that comes from the ISP equipment - that should be pluged in the WAN port of your router.

Summary:
- 1 network wireless router
- 2 network wireless adapter cards (one for each computer)
- 1 network cable between ISP equipment and wireless router.

Ussually, when the ISP connects your site to their network, also provides this cable. If they didn't it should be easy to find a brand new one, at a price that in Romania is 2-3 USD (it depends on length, I am refering to a cable length of 2 meters - almost 6 feet), but I heard that in some other places (like Italy) it is sooooooooooo much more expensive. I did not imagined that such a short cable would cost 6 euro! That's 8-9 USD. To answer to the network cable problem, here is a question: you wrote these messages from your highest room, in your tallest tower? Or someone did save you already?
If you did wrote from your room, you already have the cable. If you had to pay a visit to your vengeful neighbour for internet access... Oh well... You need a cable

I would gladly come to help you to set up a wired network But, there are a few thousands miles between your lovely stories and my humble person (Why do you say "unfortunately"?) Let me tell you a little bit more, in fact a little bit less now, after I heard that you have only 2 computers that compete to network access. If you want wired network, than you will need:
- 2 network cables (Ethernet cat 5e - this is the standard now), their length depends on the distance between computers and router; a little longer, with 1-2 meters more than necessary - up to 6 feet more I mean
- 2 network adapter cards - ussually, on newer computers (motherboards), they are included in the motherboard so I suppose you already have these
- 1 wired router
- 1 network cable between the router and ISP equipment (connected on the new router to the WAN port, you guessed right )

I agree, a cable hanging outside your windows, on the wall, will ruin the look of your imperial majesty. I don't have a clue about rooms positions, if they are on the same side of the building, if they are one above the other or they are in separate planes... That is one trouble with the wired networks, posing the cables. It is simple, but also it is a lot to work for finding a good position (behind false walls, they might need some holes to traverse floors/walls/doors/windows etc).

Now I know what a story means I knew that "story" means a "fairy tale" or "description", I didn't know it also means a "floor". (http://dictionary.cambridge.org/results.asp?searchword=story&x=0&y=0)

If you are glued with wireless network, try to find a SELLER that will receive back the products if you find that you can't use wireless network (I know, I told you already about interferences. Let me say it twice ). Try with wireless and if it does not work than switch to cable equipment (and the work involved). Why thank you sooo much viking. So, where exactly is this "few thousand miles" away place? Just being nosy.
I'm from Romania, south-eastern Europe. Neighbours: Ukraine, Moldavia (former part of Romania), Hungary, Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro.

A political map here: http://www.ezilon.com/map_of_europe.htm (with the note that Romania and Bulgaria are now members of the European Union).
Oh, I forgot to tell: Transilvania is part of Romania. Romania is comprised of 3 historical provinces: Moldova = Moldavia, like the neighbour country - they were the same thing, Transilvania and Tara Romaneasca. In all the provinces the spoken language is romanian (the dialects differ too little, we are a small country). But hungarian language is spoken also in some parts of Romania. Of course, there are some other languages spoken (gipsy language = an indian dialect, rusian and some others) but in a much smaller scale.

Dracula was a romanian king, Vlad Tepes (Vlad The Impaler), who lived in Tara Romaneasca between 1431-1476, and also ruled the country for a time. It is an important king in Romania because he obtained independence for Tara Romaneasca from the turks (a very expansive nation at the time).Wow... the huge explanation of Romania's geographical location was unnecessary.

I'm from Bosnia... my temporary domain is in the States

Hey neighbor  Hellow than, beautiful neighbour.

Stop bragging about you guys being in the EU already.

Croatia is almost in... unfortunately I don't think Bosnia will ever be... lol... HORRIBLE economy.

Solve : LAN line showing up on modem with one computer, but not the other??

Answer»

Hello,
Ok, So my one computer is doing something wierd when i try to set up the internet. On my moden the LAN Line isn't lighting up, so when i try to set it up it tells me that it's encoutered an error. What's especially odd about it is that when i do the same procedure with any other computer it lights up and works fine. I don't know very much about networking at all, so this might be really easy, it may not.
Any ideas?Does that computer have the same OS as the other ones? Remember, too much INFO is better than not enough!I just don't know what all to post for a networking problem, they're all the same OS though. The one that's not working was installed with the same CD used on my main evenno light could be a bad cable, bad port on the router or bad nic card in the pc. What does device manager show for your nic card? Quote from: Anythingwill on September 07, 2007, 02:31:43 PM

The other computers, connected through the same cable, to the same port on router?
As Lerninmore said, it could be a fault in one of several places: bad port on router, bad nic in pc.

Show us here what is the result from the command (you have to type it in command prompt):
ipconfig /all >c:\outipcfg.txt

(after you launch the command, copy the content of c:\outipcfg.txt here)Well i'll work on trying a different cable, i've don't have any extras so i have to go through the process of taking one ALREADY in use. Trying to make the cords look neat really makes it difficult to switch them.
I also thought about a bad router, i've had some problems with it before. So, when i tried to install the internet i hooked my computer directly to the modem, didn't go through the router, pulled the power on the modem for 30 SECS and tried to install. Right now i do have it hooked up to the router though, since it didn't install.
In device manager the nic card it just says it's working properly under status,
Here's that txt doc from command prompt:

Bad physical address. Have you change it or it became so? How it reached that address, 00-00-00? This is not valid, and there are a few possibilities:
- you changed it on Windows
- faulty network adapter

IP Routing  Enabled...... Yes - your computer is used as a ICS computer, right?

This is the response you got from the computer having trouble to connect to internet? I would check with a different network card. Yours actual seems to have defects. It does not have a valid MAC address (physical address) and ussually this is a sign of a malfunctioning network card.Oops, i made a really dumb mistake, I did that test on the wrong computer
It still lets me know that my ethernet on this computer is defective, it would explain a couple things.
but i'll do the test on the right computer in a sec here and post it for youOK, on the correct computer for ipconfig/all it just said "Windows IP configuration", and for 'c:\outipcfg.txt it said "'c:\outipcfg.txt' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"
Also, incase you want to know my Network Adapter it says i have a 1394 Net Adapter from Microsoft Quote from: Anythingwill on September 10, 2007, 02:02:33 PM

Also, incase you want to know my Network Adapter it says i have a 1394 Net Adapter from Microsoft
That would be your problem then, the 1394 adapter is a firewire adapter not a network adapter. (The reason it is showing in your Network connections is because you can connect two computers using a firewire cable for some very fast file transferring.)

Have you installed or removed anything recently?Well, i just plain reinstalled windows, and before that it was my friends computer, so i've never actually had it working myselfI thought we were getting somewhere with Deerpark's post, any more thoughts on it?

Also, in network connections it says "1394 connection" connected at 400Mbps, only, once again, i can't actually get the internet up, and my interent cd says an error occurs while installing.Have you installed the network adapter's drivers? What network adapter card do you have? Integrated on your computer's motherboard? What type of motherboard?Well i thought i installed the drivers, it's a Shuttle FS51 v2, i went to, http://eu.shuttle.com/archive/en/ss51g_faq.htm, and i installed

AGP driver for all operating systems (6118kB)
VGA SIS Driver v2.07 for Win2000/XP (17144kB)
LAN Driver for all operating systems (SS51G/FS51, 2585kB)
USB2.0 Driver for 2000/XP (7147kB)
Audio Driver Realtek/Avance Logic ALC650 Download Page
VGA AGP Driver for SiS651 Chipset

Then i had to install something from another site because one of the links didn't work i forget what it was, but i think it had something to do with video.
These are all from the top of the page SS51G v1.0.
i tried SS51G v2.0, but they didn't seem to work, and the top ones did.
Perhaps should i try the bottom ones again? and actually my whole comp is a little messed, so which ones should i be downloading from that site to make sure i do it right??

Finally yeah, i'm just using the network adapter that's BUILT inIt depends, you say it's a FS51 version 2, but you installed drivers for version 1. So, for version 2, the drivers and other necessary downloads are:

winflash
BIOS update (only one from the two - I would sugest winflash version)
agp driver
vga driver
audio driver
usb driver
usb patch
network driver package
(eventually the manual)

Solve : Rookie DHCP question?

Answer»

Hello,

I am trying to GET DHCP setup on a new Win2k3 Standard server here. Currently on our network we have TWO NT4 machines. Each RUNNING DHCP with the same scope, just different ends of it.

I guess my QUESTION would be, is DHCP domain dependent?

I don't know how the client machines know which server to get IP information from. Its not domain dependent. How it works is the client boots and than send a broadcast to all the machines in the subnet. It asks for a DHCP server to give it a IP. The DHCP server than sends back an answer and gives the client machine a IP and any other SETTINGS you setup for that scope. For example...if your running a WINS server you can send that to the client...or the IP of your DNS server....etc...

If those servers are in the same local area network you will have problems. The scopes should not cover the same area, they should resolve different areas.
For example, if you have a dhcp server covering the IPs from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.25 and another dhcp server covering IPs from 192.168.0.20 to 192.168.0.50, you could end up having some IPs duplicated in your network. And that's bad, you will have workstations with no network connection (software) but with valid IPs. Difficult to find where the problem lies... They should cover (in my example) areas of IPs like 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.25 (one of the dhcp servers), 192.168.0.26 - 192.168.0.50 (the other dhcp server).

Of course, if those dhcp servers are separated by routers with NAT, you won't have any problem caused by scopes in different dhcp servers. Thanks for the help! When double checking the servers that are running the DHCP, there is no overlap. I just didn't know which server knew to assign the IP.

Solve : Enabling a different network?

Answer»

Hello,

I bought a brand new HP laptop yesterday and I would like to know how to switch from the 802.11g network to the 802.11n network. The laptop is running Vista home premium and is connecting through an Apple Extreme Airport base station. I am currently connect via 802.11g according to the wireless connection but I would like to UTILIZE the newer and faster network. So I would appreciate if anyone can tell me how to change it.

Brittany*bump*

Does anyone know how to help me with this issue?Dear Brittany, the 802.11n standard is very-very-very buggy, I did not heard to be a final solution, it is still under work before being agreed by manufacturers.
Still, if you want to switch from 802.11g to 802.11n, you will have to buy a router or access point that SUPPORTS the 802.11n standard, and FROM THE SAME MANUFACTURER you will have to buy wireless network ADAPTERS that support the 802.11n standard. If you care about your satisfaction (and money), do not switch to 802.11n. Yet. Maybe later. But definitely not now. (Though I might be wrong... Let's hear someone ELSE opinions.)Yeah I'd stay away from 802.11n for time being as well. The standard is still under development and not scheduled for final release before March 2009.

If you really want to use it, do as Viking suggests and get a wireless AP/router and a wireless network card from the same manufacturer in ORDER to minimize potential problems.

Solve : Internet connect but cannot use it what shall i do?

Answer»

I hope that someone can bring some light to the issue I have. It is regarding the broadband internet that I and my sister are using. Just to note that they are both separate CONNECTIONS in to separate places.

With my computer I have a year old Sony Vaio running on Windows XP Home and using Norton’s 2007 antivirus and using a netgear router. Simply when using the internet it appears that I am CONNECTED but cannot USE any function on the internet. I.e. loading internet explorer, when it opens up the page cannot be displayed, comes up. So after investigating on the msn troubleshooting page, I have discovered that when this occurs it is the DNS and Key ports that are not working. (I am not sure what this is but it occurs). I can fix 99% of the time. If I am on msn and it occurs I normally try and repair, let a report be sent then but clicking don’t SEND. Then disconnecting of the internet and reconnecting. But if it occurs whilst using internet explorer by itself then I have to turn the computer off and the router, reset the router and then turn the laptop on and that normally works. Why does this occur and can it be sorted.

The other issue is that yesterday it started to happen to my sister’s laptop which is brand new. That is a Sony Vaio also using the Vista operating system, Norton 360 antivirus but she is on a university LAN network.

I really do not know why this is happening and what to do about it, as sometimes this occurs when I least want it to and it is unpredictable.
It seems LIKE a virus/spyware infected both computers.

Solve : MIRRORED RAID QUESTION?

Answer»

My question is; will a mirrored raid work correctly if the data on the second DRIVE was put there through a ghosting process outside the raid and installed into the raid instead of going through the copy process inside the raid?

Because the copy process can hours with large hard drives for YEARS when installing a mirrored raid in a data server, to save time I’ve been ghosting the data drives outside the raid then installing the drives and just starting the mirrored raid without going through the copy process but enabling auto rebuild.

RECENTLY I installed a Netgear NAS Raid server and learned that, at least with the Netgear NAS, the mirrored raid has to be built through the copying process inside the NAS.

This made me question if the same is true for a normal mirrored raid as well. I have asked a number of my normal networking friends and everyone has a guess but no one seems to KNOW for sure.

Solve : Adding a wireless router to wired Cable 4 port router... will it work? How safe??

Answer»

Hello all PC users!

I have a cable Router at the moment and run 2 cables for 2 PC's off it, on a pretty reasonable broadband connection. My flatmate has bought a wireless router which can be added to a network for quick, easy wireless access. I use windows xp with SP2...

Firstly, just by connecting the wireless router to my hard-wired Cable eouter, will this give extra access to the wireless PC without interrupting the 2 cabled PC's I already have? Does her OPERATING system matter at all?

Also, SECURITY!! Just How safe is this? Does anyone have any issues I should be aware of before letting her hook into our network? i.e. will there be access to files, email etc on my PC through the wireless connection? Will there be access to material being downloaded on either PC by the others?

I am a big newbie still but I would really appreciate a few TIPS on this kind of set-up, if someone has the time to reply.

Thanks!

Scared Wierd Little Guy
Moved from Hardware to Networking -ZylstraOk....you can do it that way if you want to or you could just unplug the wired modem and run the two PC's that were connected to that off the wireless modem.  On the back of the wireless modem there should still be ports to have computers wired into it.  That way you can have the wireless GOING and the wired PC's as well.  As for security, all you would have to do is access the main page of the wireless router and enable WPA.  Use WPA not WEP.  WPA is more secure.  You will have to enter in a password and then that will be the password that anyone who wants to access your wireless will have to enter. Alright First of all yes you can run the wireless off a port of your wired router. In my house we have a wired router, running off a port of our wireless router. It will not interrupt your 2 Pc's. You could also just use the one wireless router and eliminate using two. Also, You'd have to have a computer plugged into at one point to set up the connection. I'd SAY your best bet is to either use the one router (the wireless one), or run your router off a port off of the wireless one.

I'm not sure what you mean by this do you mean your flatmate accessing your files using the wireless, or do you mean "hackers, or do you mean both.

Your flatmate would not be able to access any files if he isn't in the same workgroup as you (I'm not completely 100% sure but unless he is really skilled with computers I doubt he could do it). And im not exactly sure what would happen if a hacker tried to access your computer from the wireless but make syre you do what kbm292 said and put a password on the wireless connection.

Thats great... thanks. What is WPA compared to WEP?Here is a website of interesting reading to answer your questions.

False. If he has physical access to your network, than he has access to all your shares, no matter what workgroup he uses.

How skilled is your mate? Does he do this kind of troube, he is ussually "stealing" someone else computer information?
WEP/WPA don't help in this case. But they help if another person wants to connect to your wireless router, without your aprouval. But the flatmate is trying to run off the wireless.Ok, so we will consider him part of network, and your main concern is outside access to your local area network (to your network, in short).
Set up properly the wireless router security. I recommend to enable WPA mode on the wirelles router (if your flatmate's computer network adapter supports this security schema).

English QUESTION: I said "flatmate's computer network adapter" and to me it seems to be a little too long and fuzzy. Is any other way in which I could say the same idea?

Solve : Wireless & Wired Home Network?

Answer»

I have 2 computers, one that is hooked up to my 2Wire router through CAT5 and one that is using a Lixus wireless card.  Both can get out to the internet.  The problem is that I can not get the two of them to communicate to each other.  I am trying to get Diablo to play over the network using IXP so that my son and I can play.  Can anyone please HELP!you could just connect the 2 computers together witha cross over Ethernet cable. Or re they both in the same workgroup? can you see the other pc in you network places ( click network places and then workgroup computers )I am sorry Lerninmore, you gave wrong directions (LE: although I tend to agree with your opinion regarding a cross over cable - perhaps he has some fragmenting problems in his actual configuration?). He has network CONNECTIVITY, he does not have to change cables, to check network workgroup etc. He just has to check if protocols are installed and no firewall is blocking their communication.

McHunt, is IPX protocol installed on both computers?
IPX is installed on both computers.  They are conected through the router, not a crossover cable. The computer that is conected to the router via the CAT5 can see the wireless computer but not the other way around. I have opened every port for gaming that I can find on the router as well a enabled file and printer sharing. I have check my firewalls and they seem open to intranetwork communications. I have run the HOME network wizard (probably a huge mistake) and both machines are on the same workgroup.Quote:
"I have opened every port for gaming that I can find on the router as well a enabled file and printer sharing."
Question: you opened to wan access? (for outside access of your local area network, for computers not being connected to your router) Mistake. You should not. You must not. Do not!!!
File and printer sharing I assume you enabled on each computer and you did not changed router configuration for that.

Disable (for testing) the firewalls and try again to set up a game.Gaming ports, I'm not a total idiot.  I've tryed bridging the router and it worked  for the TCP/IP intranet, but I still can not get the IXP to work.  Have you disabled the firewalls for testing?yes, I've disabled the fire walls for testing, and have bridged the port for the cat-5 on the router but still can not get IPX to work. TCP/IP works GREAT, with or without the bridge. I am sure you searched the NET for MOR informations, so please don't be upset if I place here a link:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/20974-17-unable-join-game-starcraft
(see the last posts).
Also I saw that they require NetBIOS names (so you will have to enable NetBIOS over IPX/SPX). I don't understand why

Solve : setting up backup network?

Answer»

Here's my scenario:
I have three sites (WT1, wt2, wwp), each connected by a fiber. Each site has it's own DC and the one in the middle is the enterprise controller. Each DC has from 5-15 computers under it. Each computer has a manually assigned IP address.
I am trying to create a data backup network that will be separate from the MAIN network so that we can perform backups of all the main servers (DCs and SQLs) without affecting BANDWIDTH on the main network. I've GOT the extra NICs installed and cables connected and ready to go, but can't get much further than that. When I enable the second nic on the servers, the other parts of the network (wt2 & wwp) don't show up in active directory (from wt1).
Before I get too FAR into this, I want to know if anyone here knows how to tackle this.

Solve : Need help connecting to company server from home?

Answer»

Hello,

I'm trying to connect to my company's sever from home.  I'm the entire IT DEPARTMENT.  I'm actually a programmer but I do other IT-related work also.  I've set up a sever and have configured the user accounts for the other office personnel to have access to the server by remote from their office computers.  All that works fine.  I've also set up the server as a RAS server.  However, I'm having difficulty in figuring out how to access the server from remote LOCATIONS.  I was looking into setting up a VPN but there I can't seem to find any good free VPN client software.  In any case, networking isn't something I'm extremely knowledgeable about, so any information would be helpful.  I have been trying to use the Start -> Run command and typing in the server's ADDRESS -- FQDN, IP address, and some random things, none of which have worked.  I keep GETTING a message saying "Path cannot be found."  I understand that since the remote computers are not connected to the company's domain so I can't simply type the server's name and presto it works.  However, I was hoping there's some other way to connect to the server from remote, preferably free and secure.

Thanks,
-One lost programmerVPN is your only realistic option, in this scenario.  Before giving any advice, I'd need to know a bit more about your environment.  What OSes are involved?  (Server, work PCs, home PCs.)  What routers are you using - home and office?  (Make and model please - they may have VPN capabilities.)The server  is a Dell PowerEdge SC440 running MS Small Business 2003.  All client workstations are sportin' Win XP PRO.  Some home PC's are also WinXP Pro but a few (one I think) is WinXP Home.  Our office's router is a Westell 6100 (made for Verizon specifically).  Home's Internet solution is Verizon DSL but I dont't know what brand/model modem is used.

I set up a VPN using Windows but it says it cannot find the server's IP address, most likely because the IP is for the office's domain, not the Internet.  I think... all this networking stuff gives me a headache  :-?

Any help is much appreciated.Gotcha.  The good news is that you can do it!  Can I suggest that you start by reading the networking FAQ (link is in my signature) - in particular the first section.  This will help you understand the networking side of things, and may ease your headache a little!  This is not obligatory, but I'm confident it will help.  Once you've got the difference between public and private IP addresses sussed, the rest becomes considerably easier.  You can read on, but reading the FAQ first should help.

In order to VPN in from home, you need to be able to connect a VPN client (from home) to a VPN server (at the office).  Windows SBS 2003 has a VPN server built in - you will find the settings under Administrative Tools-->Connections Manager.  Your router does not have a VPN server built in (which is a shame, because that's always easier!) so you have to set up something called "VPN passthrough" - whenever the router receives an incoming VPN request (from home) it then passes this through - on to the SBS machine.

Consult your router's manual for instructions on setting up VPN passthrough.  I suggest setting up PPTP initally.  It's slightly less secure than L2TP/IPSEC, but much easier to set up.

Configure your VPN users on the SBS box; you should then be able to set up incoming VPNs.  Give your home users their username, password, and your router's external IP address.

Does that make sense?

Solve : I can't connect to the internet!?

Answer»

Hi. My problem is as follows.

I tried to connect my laptop to another computer to download a file via a network cable. I didn't really know what I was doing, so I ran "network setup wizard" several times to try to get the computers to recognize each other.

Anyway, it didn't work. But when I removed the cable and tried to get online via my laptop, something was amiss. I use wi-fi, and the wireless connection thingy in the system tray says its CONNECTED, but apparently the computer won't recognize it. I can't connect to the web and no program recognizes the connection. Furthermore, when I open the "Network Connections" list there is a new connection listed under "Internet Gateway" called "Internet Connection".

I think what may have happened is that when I ran network setup wizard I accidentally configured the computer to run under a network via a SHARED internet connection and it thinks it has to connect via another computer. But how do I set it right? BTW, I can't disable the connection called "Internet Connection", and it refuses to connect via dialup. When I open Internet Explorer it defaults to "cannot access this page in offline mode" and usually stops responding when I try to close it.

I would be eternally indebted to those who COULD provide assistance.

manimal

edit: I have a dell XPS with XP MEDIA Center Edition, a Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller network card, an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG wireless network adaptor and a WLAN USB 2.0 wireless network adaptor. Here is a screenshot showing the status of the internet connection that I am unsure about. Sorry about the size. http://www.imagehosting.us/index.php?action=show&ident=1909916
What options do you get if you right-click on the Internet Gateway item?  You need to switch off internet connection sharing BASICALLY and reconfigure your network connection.  You might find it helps to have a read of the networking FAQ - see the link in my signature.

I've just got Aol Platinum wireless, (I know I know, AoHell.)

We've got 2 PC's and a laptop. The modem has wireless, and ethernet connections, so the main PC is linked VIA ethernet, and the other 2 is running off WiFi, at first the first one was running off WiFi too.

That PC has no problem getting 7.5mb's when the other 2 are off, yet the other 2...Even when they're the only ones on, can only max at 2mb's. It's not the wireless cards, because i've PUT the one that was running on the first PC and getting over 7mb in the other PC and STILL the same problem.

Can't be a virus, the 2 PC's were completely formatted about a week before the wireless arrived.

I've done virus and spyware checks in safe mode.

I've checked for TCP/IP v6 or something as someone suggested that COULD slow it down, not installed on either system.

Both systems are running Windows XP SP2.
The one that hits higher speeds, is actually older and less up-to-date then the other too, the laptops brand new.

Any suggestions? :/Check the router settings to see if bandwidth is being limited.
What is the network connection speed for the wireless connection?
It may just be because it's wireless . . . try connecting the ones connected by wireless with a wired connection instead and see if they get a faster speed then.

Solve : force a logon to MShome/Workgroup?

Answer»

I like to force a "Classic Logon?" to MShome/Workgroup, as I think it is not a bad way of stopping Peekers on my Lan, e.g. neighbours or Driveby's eventhough it may not be perfect.

Here is my set-up:
U.S. Robotics Router, seems to be well protected, according to various tests.
-local COMPUTERS:
--Mshome:
   ---Heinz57 XP, Hardwired into Router
   ---COMPAQ XP, Wireless
---Xstore W2000, Hardwired into Router, user must login
--Workgroup:
---Sheeba XP, Wireless, user must login

I can access any of my computers, provided I login as required, e.i. Xstore or Sheeba.

What I want to do is force a Login for the Heinz57 and Compaq.
I searched just about all subjects in the PC's Help and Internet to do this type of thing, but running out.

I appreciate your help. Thank you.
What do you mean by "force a logon"?  Which version of XP is it - Home or Pro?  XP Pro's security isn't FAB, but XP Home's sucks royally.Thank you for your reply.

I should have mentioned this.
XP is HomeEdition for all three, INCLUDING Sheeba, and that one pops up with:

if accessed from XPhome:
--"Connect to Sheeba" screen,
"username:" greyed and displays "Sheeba\guest" greyed
    and requests a password

 if accessed from 2000:
--"Enter Network Password" screen,  for "\\Sheeba" and it wants
  "Connect As:"
  "Password:"

As I kept on searching, it appears XPhome has a big hole in security. However Sheeba runs under XPhome but does not allow access, unless you Login, and that is where I am looking for, for the Heinz57 and Xstore.
I should mention that the Sheeba is my daughter's Wireless laptop, and the access method was confiqured by the University, which she no longer attends. Thus it will be hard to get the "recipe".

XP Home automatically sends the username and password of the currently logged in user.  If you have the same username and password on all machines, you should find that shares work seamlessly. Not a great alternative to the HIGHER security of a real domain controller, but then if you're stuck with XP Home, you don't have much other choice.

Solve : Ethernet networking between two pc's?

Answer»

Over the past ten years or so I have been able to navigate the increasingly complex world of computing, mostly on a personal level as the companies I have worked for have not been very computer literate(I am in horticulture).  I' m reasonably adept and intelligent and moreover persistent when encountering the unknown.  But this seemingly simple procedure of connecting two laptops together via ethernet, through a Linksys switch has me bamboozled.

I have attached the specs on the two Vaio laptops so I won't repeat if possible.  Both currently access the INTERNET through a Belkin router wirelessly.  I'm quite a distance from the router, 1 floor up and through walls but performance has been acceptable for non-business, small file downloads, etc.

What I am trying to accomplish is the sharing of files between the two laptops that are physically close to each other in my room.  I assumed (wrong) that connecting the two either directly with a crossover or through an ethernet switch would be a simple process. But noooooooooo.  I just don't get it.  Any advice would be appreciate.  I've search all around the internet attempting to find a CONCISE approach to this connection but all that I've seen lack the clarity that I require.  Help!!!!

Hopefully I am providing enough detail on both computers that someone will see what I need to do.

Thanks in advance.

David

Solve : Website access problems from Networked PCs?

Answer»

4 x PCs all on same Network & in same WORKGROUP all XP Pro SP2, fully updated
All using IE7, not certain which version of Adobe all are using

When accessing a certain website, which after logging in & making selection of product to view displays product in PDF format

1 PC can access & view information with no problem
1 PC can access & view information after being prompted to download file &
2 PCs will not even access the website with exactly the same URL typed in the Address Bar

All the PCs sit behind a Firewall which only has a global policy so there is no PC selectivity re: viewing websites

Any thoughts on how to enable all these PCs to view this website without problem would be appreciated

Thanks for all help
In respect of the first problem:  Control Panel-->FOLDER Options-->File Types.  Find the type "PDF" in the list.  Click "Advanced".  Uncheck "Confirm open after download".

In respect of the second, do you see any error MESSAGE?

Solve : Turning WI-FI to an Ethernet cord?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a quick question and it may be a dumb question, but if you could GIVE me the answer it would be a huge help.

First of all I use my niehbors internet (he is totally fine with this I have talked to him about it) and I use it through WI-FI on my laptop. I recently got a PS3 and I'm having all kinds of problems connecting through this wireless internet on it. I was wondering if there is anything I could buy that would turn my WI-FI internet from my laptop to an ethernet cord that I could physically plug into my PS3. In other words share my WI-FI connection. I was wondering if a hub could do this or anything would be able to do this. Or is this not possible? Thank you.Nice, you got a PS3?
Awesome.
Anyway, GETTING back to your problem . . .
I'm not a networking guru but I might be able to help.
I think that you may just need a crossover cable to hook your laptop to your PS3, and then you can enable the internet connection sharing on your laptop to share the wireless connection with the PS3.
I hope that MAKES sense.
And by the way, welcome to the forums. Quote

I do the same thing with my Xbox, accept I use a router and A cat5 cable. That's basically the same thing, but the OP doesn't have a router, they have a wireless connection to their neighbour's router.
So a Cat5 cable and router is the same thing without the wireless in between.Alright I tried connecting my laptop to my PS3 with a crossover cable (which I'm assuming a Cat 5E cable is the same thing as an ehternet cable), and clicking on share internet last night. And I got little to no connectivity through the LAN connection, and my PS3 would time out when it was requesting the IP address. Although I did see both were doing work becasue the lights were flashing on each. I believe the PC is sending a single but nothing is being recieved. If that means anything. So do I need to try buying a router, and connecting it through that way? If so what router should I buy?So you plugged a crossover cable, which is the same as an Ethernet cable which is the same as a Cat5E cable, into the PS3 and laptop?
And then shared the wireless connection with the PS3 via the Ethernet connection?Ok on to the next question. I figured it out how to connect the crossover wire and I can run the internet browser on my PS3 but it won't let me connect to the Play STATION Network. So I called Sony yesterday and they said the only way I can make it work is by getting a router. So I bought a router and it won't let me set it up without a password.  But all I'm trying to do is turn this wireless internet into a wire, any suggestions on installing the software or how to make this work? What Sort of Router did you get? Try this: Plug you PS3 into the router, and plug your laptop into your router. Then Enable internet connection sharing. Thats what I do with my router hopefully it shall work with you.

Solve : Can't turn on the wireless switch :(?

Answer»

Hello everyone!!!

The only way to TURN on my wireless internet on my Dell Insprion 800 is to push Fn+F2. However, being as my girlfriend somehow melted my keyboard a bit, and now either the Fn button or the F2 button, or the combination, doesn't work. I know the router and all works fine, I just don't have access to these keys to turn the switch on anymore. I have NO idea how to get AROUND this, and I can't find a USB keyboard that has a Fn button. Please, help me. Thanks a ton in advance  [smiley=cool.gif] I've dug through everything in the control panel, looked for PROGRAMS for virtual keyboards I could program, everything I can think of. a fricken thing else to try, so if one of you figures it out, I'll be more grateful than you can possibly imagine.

***EDit. I'm actually not sure where I should place this question, so if anyone can guide me to the appropriate forum I'd appreciate that as well.
That's unlucky.
The only thing I can think of is trying to get in touch with Dell, see what they have to say about it.
You won't find a keyboard that will do it for you, and it won't be on an on-screen keyboard either (I don't thnik so anyway, my on-screen KB doesn't have an Fn button and my laptop does).Unfortunately, the Fn key cannot be remapped or stuffed with a keyboard buffer stuffer. It PRODUCES no scancode of its own and only modifies the scancode of the key that gets pressed with it. It does it at a low level and its function is not seen by windows. Quote

I'm going to assume that means I'm screwed

It means you won't find another KB with an Fn key, and there's no way to emulate it.
At least, I think that's what is meant.
I'd try getting in touch with Dell, see if they can replace your KB for you. Quote
I'm going to assume that means I'm screwed

Maybe, maybe not. If it is built in, you could try disabling it and use a PCMCIA card. It would not be dependent on the Fn key combo but would use its own drivers.hi possibly suggestion  is to hold the alt key down and using the numeric keypad type in the char (ascii) equivelent of the fn plus f2 key.

my guess would be hold down [altkey] then type 0000 0105 it MAY or may not work but will not destroy anything if it does not - alternately have a look at http://www.usnetizen.com/fix_capslock.html which talks about remapping XP keys via the reg edit file!! (should be fun!) but if you go this route have the valium, coffee and alarm clock by your side for it will be a long session!

know anything about emails that do don't do don't pick up on a radio / broad band link?

Quote
remapping XP keys via the reg edit file!
Won't work. You have to edit the scan codes. Fn does not have one.I bet you that Dell has a utility that you can download that can control this.  Look up your laptop on Dell's website.  The Fn combos can usually be emulated.  (It's the physical wireless on/off switches that are the real problem.)

Solve : My Wireless is messed up?

Answer»

Well I brought down my modem so I could connect but today my wireless stopped connecting. It would hold the SIGNAL for awhile then it would lose it (the router is upstairs and the wireless card is down here in the cpu), so I would go restart the router and or Modem and it would work FINE for a while. About 20 minutes ago it stopped working and WHATEVER I did didn't seem to help. If someone can help me reconfigure or anything, it would be appreciated.

Windows XP SP1
WAP54G Linksys Router
WMP54GS Linksys Adapter CardWhy no SP2 on that machine? That is the first thing you should do and then post back.well I did have SP2 on it but it started acting goofy, so I did a system restore
but what it does is I'll hook it up and it will work for about 5-20 minutes and then it won't connect to the internet. I still get a signal, I just can't get on the internet
Need...more...info...gasp

Operating system / ANTIVIRUS & antispyware protection / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new software?

So...hard wired to the modem no problem, right?  But wireless is the issue right?  Either it's the wireless card or the router.  Hard to tell without swapping one or the other to verify which one it is.

Alan <><   Quote

Why no SP2 on that machine? That is the first thing you should do and then post back.

Then from a command prompt on the downstairs machine type "ipconfig /all " without the quotes and hit Enter.
Post your results.I figured out a solution I just run Wireless Zero CONFIGURATION everytime I get on

Solve : Domai Set up?

Hello,

I would like to know how to set up a windows domain. So basicly it would allow the users to log in to any computer and would also make administration easier There are 10 computers , all of them running windows XP Pro.

Thanks

Al968First of all you need a server preferably Windows 2000 server edition or Windows 2003 server edition then you can use DOMAINS. For me a WORKGROUP is satisfying enough.A Linux server running Samba and LDAP is a much cheaper (albeit less featureful) way of administering a domain for Windows XP computers.

What's your budget?Thanks

"What's your budget? "
Lets just say I'd prefer cheap but I need something good.
Would Samba and LDAP allow all the users to log in their ACCOUNT on any manchine and have their latest modification of the account made when they log in an other computer ?

Thanks

Al968It depends on which modifications you wish to be replicated.  Samba can certainly support ROAMING profiles.Which liniux server do you recommand ?

Thanks

Is it just to be plugged in or does it include cable ?

Thanks

Solve : internet is wayy to slow?

Answer»

it's me again. i mess up my computer once a week, i know it's sad. well this time it's not a virus. at least i don't think it is. here's the problem: my internet works, but has been moving way slower then it usually does. i first noticed the problem while using limewire. i was downloading songs and i started noticing error messages saying that a firewall is blocking the connection. well, i haven't changed my firewall settings (i use trend micro) , but i checked just to make sure and everything was normal. i added limewire to the exception LIST, just to be safe but it still doesn't work. plus, the firewall has never affected limewire before. and a few hours after the limewire incident, i began to notice that every website i went to took forever to load. just getting onto these message boards has taken about 5 minutes. i haven't installed any new programs lately, and aside from downloading some songs and movies i haven't changed anything. no spyware, and no viruses are appearing when i do the scan. oh, and i can't do system restore because i forgot to turn it on and i now have no points to restore it to. can anyone help?oh wait... i do have a virus. MS02-039_SQL_SERVER_RESOLUTION_EXPLOIT. i'll try to get rid of it, but i may still need some help. if that's what's causing this problem. lol, if my computer were a person, it would have the crappiest immune system in the world. i always have viruses, spyware, ect... *sigh*.Limewire and other P2P is a great way to get malware on your computer. What types of things are you downloading?List your OS and protection programs...it's obvious you are under-manned in that department.i think the only program that i have is trend micro pc-cillin. i find that it works well and gets rid of all my spyware, but sometimes i'll get a virus that it can't delete. also, i get alerts for viruses, but then i do the scan and it says there's NOTHING. to answer the other question about what i download, it's mostly music and sometimes an episode of a tv show or a movie. i'm very careful though, and when limewire stopped working yesterday the first thing i did was scan my recent downloads. but they were clean, and i really don't remember downloading anything strange.  if anyone can provide a tip for fixing limewire, it would really help. i can live with slow internet for a while, but i miss my music downloads already. i'm seriously doubting the problem is firewall related, since i haven't changed my firewall settings and they have never affected limewire before.nevermind. i just fixed the problem. turns out it was some stuff i installed earlier in the week that was messing everything up. i know uninstalling things should have been the obvious solution right from the start, but when it's 3 am and i'm on the computer with too much CAFFEINE in my system i don't think very clearly. so thanks so much to everyone who was willing to help. i'm sure i'll be back with a new problem sometime in the near future.... To further protect your Limewire expeditions grab the following and install and update them;

Spybot Search and Destroy
AdAware
AVG Anti-Spyware  (formerly Ewido )
Stinger

Disclaimer : These fine programs will not keep out the nasties encountered in the Limewire realm...but you will be glad you have them the next time you get slammed.

Solve : ISP's - Can you recommend an ISP .....more?

Answer»

I am CURRENTLY with Orange (Internet Service Provider) however they have REFUSED to provide a static IP address for me to run a home web server.

Can anyone recommend another ISP who provides static IP addresses to their customers ?

Many Thanks

KateWhat area are you in ? ?Looking at her profile, Scotland.
Have a look here - a list of ISPs in the UK.
Some of them include details about whether they have a static IP address as standard/optional.
Might be useful. Thanks for the list and yes I'm in Scotland
I've taken a look but I think I might go with Tiscali as they do an unlimited business package for LESS than what I PAY for on Orange and Tiscali also provide a free static IP.
Also seems very easy to migrate.

If anyone feels my choice is bad then please let me know.

Solve : Wireless getting on my nerves - other network?

Answer»

Is there a way to only connect to ONE network, and not have Windows recognize others?
Because at the minute I'm having a lot of connection issues linked to another network in the area.
The signal drops and then disconnects, Windows says it has found more than 1 network, and it tries to connect to the other one.
I click to scan for more and it connects to mine, then drops it and says it's found more, ad infinitum.
Eventually it settles down after a reboot, but it's inconvenient to have to reboot all the time to connect to the internet.
Is there a way to not connect to the other network, which is security enabled and has a low signal so I can't connect anyway, and only connect to mine?
I've tried removing the offending network from my list of networks and moving it lower than mine, but nothing works.
Windows XP Pro SP2, Linksys OfficeConnect Firewall 802.11G router, Ralink internal wireless card in laptop.
If you need more DETAILS let me know.
Thanks in advance to nayone who can help me solve this annoying problem.
Calum. If your network is set up as ad-hoc, change it to infrastructure. That should limit the connection to your own internal network. It's already set as infrastructure. In the router setup, check to see if "allow SSID broadcast to associate" is disabled. If it is enabled, diasable it.

Try changing the channel. On my router, SSID broadcasting is disabled.
That's the only setting related to SSID in the setup - is that what you mean?
Or is it something completely different?
Do you mean do it on theirs?
Or mine?
Confused, but it doesn't take much. You can only change yours, not theirs. Did you try changing the channel? On my card, the router is id'd by BSSID and MAC number. If you are in close enough proximity, you can actually have two cards set on two adjacent channels and they work.I meant do I need to go and find who it is and ask them to change it.
I know I can't change theirs from here, I'd need the password and so on.
I tried changing the channel.
The strange thing is that it seems to be that if I boot up when my router is on, it's fine.
But if I turn my router on after my laptop has booted, it has this problem.
A reboot then settles it again.
Don't know if that's significant or not.Shutting down the router might be the problem. Many routers will reset to factory defaults when left off for to long. Some will only partially reset. If you do not have an UPS, I suggest getting one and keep the router on the UPS. If you must shut something down, shut down the modem.I see, mine has always kept the right SETTINGS as far as I know.
How long is too long?
It's NORMALLY only off maybe overnight, max of maybe 2 days.
I don't have a modem to shut down - it's a combined modem/wireless router.  I should've said that at the start, sorry."to long" depends on the manufacturer and model of the device. One other thing that you can try, if your router PERMITS it. Change the subnet mask. It would obviously have to be changed on all devices.I can change the subnet mask, but would that then stop my PC trying to connect to the other network?
Sorry for being silly but I don't understand it.
If I were to find out who the other router belongs to, is there something I could change on theirs (with their permission) so that  can't see it?
Like the SSID Broadcasting? Quote

Change the subnet mask.
I would advise that people generally don't do this, unless they understand how subnet masks work, and then only with the help of a LAN calculator...OK, I'm not going to fiddle with it.
So is there something I can do to ignore this other network?
Is there something I can ask them to do with their router or anything?Find the options for your wireless connection (right-click; properties).  Look at the Wireless Networks tab, and "Preferred Networks".  Can you figure out what to do?

(NB  This MAY not work if you have an extra program installed that manages your wireless connection.  You will be notified if that is the case.)No other program manages my wireless connection.
That was the first thing I tried though, I did say: Quote
I've tried removing the offending network from my list of networks and moving it lower than mine, but nothing works.
Sorry if it didn't come across right, but that's what I meant.
I moved the network lower in the list than mine, and I removed it from the list completely.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

Solve : Reorganizing?

Answer»

Hello everybody,
I know I keep MAKING a bunch of topics asking different questions but I just really don't know what the best method of things to do.  Let me sorta explain what set up we got going right now:

We have about 60 COMPUTERS that are all connected to 2 servers.  One server is on one side of the building, and the other is on the other side.  They both do back each other up, and then we also back up using tape drives.

Those 2 Servers.. our main one has:        Win Server 2003 for SMB Server, SP 1.0 and the other has:        Win Server 2003 Std Ed, SP 1.0

Each individual computer is set up right now to access the network, but each computer is different.  We set up a computer based on what we did with the last one.  We grab an Office CD from our pile, a WindowsXP CD from our pile, go onto the network open up a couple of different folders to install a couple of different programs that we hope we remember all of and then go into the network settings and half-assed set it up the way we do all other computers.

In reality we have 60 individual computers that are all probably unique.  I first need to know what I could do to get them all on the same page... Mainly-- Get MS Office onto the network and having all the computers run from that folder and then getting some kind of license manager.  SECONDLY: getting the network admin rights and such exact on each computer, allowing for exceptions.  (like we don't want certain computers to have the Internet).

Secondly I need to know how to get a "image" of the standard system we want so that we can put it on future computers.  We are currently in the process of upgrading a lot of our computers and something tells me that we're going to have to replace over half of those...

Finally: Is there anything that a business with 2 servers and about 60 computers could do to make their life more efficient?  I am the only IT guy here and this is my first actual business assignment, so I'm really unfamiliar with stuff that could make things better for a business without ruining day-to-day activity.

Thanks alot for the help!
--MikeWhat is the server's role ?
Do you have a network setup ?

Thanks

Al968Yes we have a network set up

The server's role is:
Email (MS Exchange)
Back up
Network Misc. Files (Users have some files on there as well as their personal PC... we'd prefer if they only put things on the network)
Website
Software Install Files (Sort of used for this purpose but not enough IMHO

That's pretty much it...  Anything ELSE you think we COULD use it for?
--MikeIf you're willing to install your PCs from scratch, you might like to google for "unattended Windows installation".  There are quite a few tools that would allow you to create a custom installation of Windows (applications included) and roll it out to several PCs.  The limiting factor is how different those PCs are - can they all handle XP, for example?

It would be a good idea to divide your servers into different roles; use one as a file/print server; the other as web/SQL/Exchange.  I would run Exchange on the primary domain controller.  By "SMB server", do you mean SBS?

I'm just studying up for my first MCP (yes, I know) and my text book has a lot on custom XP installations, so ask AWAY...

Solve : Problem Accessing the Internet with Wireless?

Answer»

I can connect to my wireless router, which I know is connected to the internet (because I've tried with an ethernet cord), but my laptop won't access the Internet. I can't browse WEB pages nor use AIM. What should I do?

I'm using: Windows XP Home; it is up to date.
Avast 4.7 Home Edition.
I have ran Spybot, Adaware, and Ewido Antimalware, and Avast! Antivirus on reboot.. I tried disabling Avast! to see if that was a PROBLEM but nothing changed.
I use Windows FIREWALL, and avast! is listed as an exception.
No other antivirus software being used.
Note- I can access the Internet via ethernet cable, just not wireless.Did this ever WORK? If so, what has changed? What hardware is involved?
Yes, it worked. I don't know what changed. Atheros wireless network adapter and a Trendnet router are involved. The router definetly still works cuz I can connect to it with another computer and access the Internet. I think there's just some setting or something on my laptop that prevents it from accessing the internet even though I am definetly connected.Go to start/run, type in command, and click OK. In the command prompt box type ipconfig and press enter. What is shown as the IP address? So I RESET my router and that solved the problem. Embarrasing.
Thanks for the help.
