Solve : FireFox Page Problem?

Answer»

I am not sure, why but, when ever I try and go too a site I keep getting this on a lot of the pages.

This Connection is Untrusted

You have asked Firefox to connect securely to www.google.com, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure.

Normally, when you try to connect securely, sites will present trusted identification to prove that you are going to the right PLACE. However, this site's identity can't be verified.
What Should I Do?

If you usually connect to this site without problems, this error could mean that SOMEONE is trying to impersonate the site, and you shouldn't continue.

This site uses HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) to SPECIFY that Firefox only connect to it securely. As a RESULT, it is not possible to add an exception for this certificate.

Solve : Static or dynamic IP? 100%?

Answer»

Hi,

Lately I contacted my ISP and asked them the procedure of changing my IP from static to dynamic, gave them my name and all my information, explained that I got my internet from another company that recently merged with them and their response was "We do not deliver static IP".

I sent a message explaining I didn't get it from them and once again giving them all my info in case there is a way for them to just put my number in and find out and once again I got the same message.

I sent a third message to the support email of the old company... got a message from the same idiot and I got *Triggered* as they say.

This got me wondering if perhaps I do indeed have a Dynamic IP Address, now my question is... how do I find out 100%

I've tried to change my IP address several times, it hasn't worked, and HTTP://whatismyipaddress.com says my IP is static.

So... I decided before I respond to the "Idiot" with a long and "friendly" e-mail, I'd make certain that I do indeed got a static IP so... here I am.

ThanksMy ISP has a DHCP lease duration of 24 HOURS. However sometimes shutting off my modem and waiting a few hours and turning it back on it will get a different IP address.

Is someone targeting your IP Address trying to do a DDoS attack or something which would be cause to be requesting for the IP Address to be dynamic as for with my ISP I have to pay a fee for a static IP address if I wanted one, they come as a premium. Only reason to have a static IP address would be if you needed to have remote access to a system at an IP address and dont want it to change for example. I am not aware of any ISP's that give out static IPs without charging a premium for this. *Note: If your modem is always on, then your IP address will most likely not change and so it might appear to be static because the DHCP sees that the modem is still active so the count down timer on the lease is reset and the IP dynamic that is given to you stays the same. I had once where my IP address wasnt changing for weeks and so I set up ability to remote to my home computer by calling to the IP address which had not been changing. Then the ISP had a short downtime for service and when internet was back up I had a different IP address and found this out when i could no longer remote into my home computer from elsewhere. Simple fix was to go home and check my IP address and use the new address for RDP.Why should it mater? Quote

Why should it mater?

To me it would only matter if they need it to change if they are being targeted by a hacker with say a DDoS attack etc. I cant see any other reason to have it change. Many tech savy people would rather have it stay the same for the benefits that that brings if wanting to host content from location or ALLOW remote access and have a known IP. While many, the majority of internet users dont care as long as the internet connection works. Thats why i asked this below.

Years ago when I use to have HONEYPOTS running for hackers to hit, I had one hacker that recognized that my system was a honeypot and he decided to use a zombie army of systems to DDoS me in retaliation for wasting his time with serving up honey pots. My solution to this was shut my modem off, wait about 15 minutes and when it came back on it was given a different IP address from the ISP. And problem solved. Had I had a static IP address I would have had to deal with the ISP to ask for a different static IP or have them assist in blocking his DDoS attack.

Quote

Thanks guys figured it out... kind of...
So... it turns out the guy who emailed me wasn't a total idiot, but he didn't explain it so I thought he was.

After an extensive search and read from google I found out A LOT of people have this issue despite having dynamic IP, most people blamed it on Windows 7...
I tried every "solution" (except the ones about turning Computer/router off) I could find on google and just when I had given up, I checked my IP one last time and it had CHANGED.

I think the issue was with the router since even if I manually changed my IPv4 IP settings, nothing happened.

As for the reason, it's more of a "if others can, I want to be able to" AND also as a protective measure.
By changing my IP every so often, people who previously had access to my IP, now have access to an IP which no longer is in use... by me...A dynamic IP Address means it changes, it doesn't mean you have control over how or when it changes, nor what it changes to.Quote

Sort of follows the same as changing your phone number frequently and whomever gets that number next might get the troubles of whatever was targeting that number. Most hackers go for soft targets with port probing and move on vs targeting a specific IP address unless that IP address has something of worth to gain access to or steal or to make that connection crippled by a denial of service attack. So its almost unheard of for someone else to get given an IP address lease from their ISP and immediately face a DDoS attack etc. The attack i had was a frustrated hacker that didnt like the fact that I had a system that was a fake business server with fake bait on it, and when he or she was probing and found it alive again very quickly since I was able to get it back up and running from a ghost image restore in less than 10 minutes, they didnt like that they fell for my honeypot. I found it quite amusing that they used a zombie army to DDoS me. While they may have been mad at me, I found it cool that they flexed their firepower at me hitting me with that DDoS. So it wasnt just some wanna be script kiddie hacker, they had access to controlling a number of systems and turning them against me to pull off the DDoS. I use to intentionally get the honeypot infected by hackers and take it offline and play with whatever goodies they left behind to mess with in the sandbox that it was when offline. Lots of keyloggers, and people who wanted to just crash it. But one that was interesting was one that they wanted to use as a relay point for file transfers. That one made me nervous because my honeypot was then being used for transfer of illegal information so it would look like I was downloading content by which they then redirected the content to them using the system like a proxy. So I gave up on honey pots when i realized that someone could use my honey pot for something illegal and pull me into their illegal mess. My honey pot.

Solve : Personal laptop on work access point wifi - secure/private if not D/Ling or not??

Answer»

Hi,

I have a question more suited to someone very familiar with work networks and security of. I have a work laptop and a personal laptop, and they can connect to the work connection access point on wifi.
I was slacking off a bit, WATCHING saved 30-Rock re-runs on VLC at work on work time, on a day I had the place to myself. I did not surf the net, look up anything or download a thing. But I inadvertently had the laptop wifi aerial turned on so I was 'connected' to the wifi.
So can the network admin/IT department see what I was doing on this day, i.e. watching 30-Rock re-runs for several hours with my feet up? We have a strict usage policy so I am FREAKING out a bit. They sacked a guy for using his work laptop for similar stuff.

I never do this on the work laptop but as it is my personal laptop, with Bitdefender firewall on a "Work" access point that often allows more file sharing, do they know or can they tell what my personal laptop was doing? I know VLC is pretty good at not connecting to the net, and I have "Allow Metadata Network Access" turned off anyway but could they see vlc running '30-Rock S05E04" etc etc for example?

It's not a simple issue as the net wasn't used, I was just 'connected'.

With no surfing, no web browser even opened and nothing intentionally DOWNLOADED can they tell "someone" had a full day slacking off?

If you value your job, I would leave your personal laptop at home and do your job.... we all have some time to take it easy at work... as long as everything is done that NEEDS to get done its fair pay for a fair days work. Perhaps if you have lots of extra time on your hands and want to make more money you can prove to your employer that your management material etc. And instead of wasting away time with paranoia of getting caught and losing your job, you can better your career. For the fact that they got rid of a guy under a similar violation, its playing with fire to not be doing your job or if you have a job that requires you to wait around for a CUSTOMER etc to be using a device to watch a show etc.

Now for the answers to your questions. VLC has the ability to run out to the web and get information on what your watching, additionally VLC also checks for updates to the player. If they have a program running that tracks packets and logs them, they can see the activity. The MAC address would be foreign and so unless you used personal laptop for anything online that points it back to you or the MAC address is known to be your personal laptop because they set you up with the wifi access and maybe they took down info to know that the MAC address ties back to you, they probably dont know who was online.

If you value your job, I would avoid doing stuff that could get you fired! And a suggestion is to try to prove yourself to employer that your not a slacker and your a go getter in which you can get promoted and make more money. Not all jobs have a ladder that is easy to climb but its my best suggestion.

I had a job once where my job was repetitious and boring. I could have slacked off once my job was done, but instead I walked over to another department and chatted with a woman there and then started helping her do her job. What became of this was that I was over there helping her fix electronics and the boss came out with me in schematics pointing out to her the issue and using an oscilloscope to trace down a problem. I pin pointed the problem and pointed it out to the woman. I didnt know that my boss was behind us looking over the cubical. When i heard his voice asking what i was doing, I was like... ok im caught!... and i kind of had the hairs on my back stand on end. He asked me why i was over here. I said I got my job done in testing and decided to help out in the service department. He grinned and said so you know your way around electronics I see. I said yes with a smile. He then said, I dont recall you having an electronics degree. I said I dont have one. I said I am self taught. Worked my way up from a battery light bulb and wire when 5 years old to radio shack kits around age 10, and then more complicated kits as a teenager, and then reading books on it and understanding it all for analog and digital electronics. He was impressed and I was promoted right then and there. So me taking the initiative to wander off into the other department got me a promotion and $5 an hour raise making 50% more money from what i was making prior. I worked then for 4 years in the service department fixing automation controls for Allen-Bradley/ Rockwell Automation until laid off in 2001.

Solve : Nameservers, redirection and Wordpress.?

Answer»

This is not really a WordPress problem. The used of a relative directory is a standard thing. You should be able to just specify a relative directory and everything would work. When I install WordPress, it asks for a directory or yu can just put it in the root.

OK, now the problem. I changed the name of my web site and had to set name servers for the new domain. Well, name servers are often very slow to propagate. I know that. Something went wrong.

Rather than pay for a new webspace, I wanted to just put the new domain on the same web server. I did that before and it was fine. But my NEWS domain name is not one of the common type.

Here is an example, but not really my real domain names. Let's say I have two domain names.
olddog.com <- a popular type
newdog.us < - a less used type
So the web space is for the first item, the old popular name.
The second name, the less used kind, shall be a sub domain on the old site.
This is done with a form of redirection. Like this
www.newdog.us points to www.newdog.olddog.com
OK, but the real locationsare:
/public_html is the directory for the old name .
/public_html/newdog.us is directory for the new name
Of course when you get to either site the user never sees public_html in the address bar. It looks like both sites are independent.
However, you could do this:
www.newdog.us
www.newdog.olddog.com
www.olddog.com/newdog.us
All three would bring up the same index.htm automagically. The same file, not three copies of the same file. There is only one index.htm for newdog,.us on the server.
Now when I install word PRESS , it has to go on
newdog.olddog.com
It twill mess UPON
newdog.us
But anybody who goes to the site must use
newdog.us
Which becomes redirected to
newdog.olddog.com

It took me days to get that right.
They do not warn you.

If you have an explanation,I might listen. Or maybe not.
Why was setting the A Records on the new domain insufficient?I don't know.I did not touch the records. The cpanel software does stuff automatically. I do not know if there is anything I could do.
The apparent issue is the propagation delay may have made things hard. At one point I used redirection and then switched to another name server. That must have CONFUSED the DNS everywhere. But I do not have any tools at hand to diagnose the problems.
Network-Tools.com has a trace and it shows there is a lot of time out on the path to my new domain. I hope in time the DNS will catch up and work good.

It just might be that the new domain, with its odd TLD, is not given much priority by the Internet. It is a case of TLD discrimination. Can I sue the Internet?

Could you go to Network-Tools.com and test my new domain?
The new domain is :
geek9pm.club (Do not use www or http, just the raw domain.)
I am still getting sometime outs.

The way I understand how it works, You point a domain at a web server via an A record in it's DNS configuration; things like CPanel is for your web host, and not for the domain. And yes, it's confusing, which is why I only look it up when I have domain issues myself, hah. I'd EXPECT it to be similar to my case (except in my case it was a new domain pointing at the same web-server without an "official" name change)

I see the tool can show DNS records as well. Let's take a look see.

The first thing I notice is they have different IP Addresses. I think Geek9pm.club should have an A record pointing at 184.168.221.53, so they are the same? As is it seems you've got two hosting servers- one at 184.168.221.53, and one at 149.56.18.183. You can see this via a ping- they point at different IPs.

For comparison, when you ping www.google.ca and www.google.com, they are both the same IP Address.

FWIW, I have two domains pointing at one host myself. they have the same TLD but I don't think the TLD (us,ca, etc.) actually matters. bcprogramming.com and bc-programming.com, which both ping to the same IP Address because I used the same "A" record on bcprogramming.com as was on bc-programming.com- two domains, one webhost (now VPS, actually).

I have no idea why the web hos has given me two different IPs. And the IPs are the old IP4 types, they are not very unique. But that is besides the point.
Wait! It just hit me.
the gek9pm.com domain is now held by godaddy. I did not want to pay $15 to keep it, so I pad a $1 for geek9pm.club and that is why they now have two different IPs.
The web space belongs to help9pm.com and the IP is :
Quote

149.56.18.183 is from United States (US) in region North America
Input: help9pm.com
canonical name: help9pm.com
Registered Domain: help9pm.com
Which is the same as geek9pm.club
And even help9pm times outs. I guess the hosting service I have is very mediocre.
But I do not make even a penny for having t these sites, so I don't want to pay anything more than what I have to.
You are right. The TLD does not make any difference. I just tried vcxz,us on that server and got the same response. Same IP. Same time outs.
Oh well. It does work. But it took me so long to get WordPress to get it right. It must have been the early propagation delay. Apparently the WordPress installer got confused. It now works the way it should and I can manage my blog.

Thanks for helping.

Solve : Xplore Wifi Extender setup?

Answer»

I have trouble setting up Xplore wifi Extender. I want to have better wifi connectivity in my house, so I bought this DEVICE, but I can't get it WORKING. I plugged it in socket and checked if worked, of course it didn't work. So I tried to connect it with my router (I use ethernet cable, not wireless, there is wifi but I doesn't use it for computer, I don't think it's EVEN possible). There is option to use WPS setup but my router doesn't have this button. So I tried with ethernet cable that came with device, I plugged extender in socket, and connected it with router using ethernet cable. Now I could connect to this Xplore 3001 with my phone, but it has the same range as the main wifi (router) so it's useless. I also can't access settings (192.168.10.1). I HOPE you can somehow understand what problem I have. I would like to know how to correctly setup this WiFi extender, so I could use WiFi in bigger range. Thanks. Can you PROVIDE some more detail about the device?
Do you have an idea of what mode you want to use?
Does it look like this:

This device might be called an "aort"in Turkish because of the band width it uses. In some cases it can cut your network speed in half.

Solve : i'm looking for a 802.11ac adapter which one would you recommend??

Answer»

i'm looking for a 802.11ac adapter which one would you recommend? am i in the wrong thread?are you open any suggestion.
Are you open to law suggestions? Here's one; go to your favorite vendor and look to see if there are customer reviews on some of the low cost Wi-Fi adapters. For basic performance is almost no difference between the low priced ones and the high-priced ones. What you want to look for is any evidence that some of the cheaper ones are DEFECTIVE. If they are not effective, they work quite well and satisfy the standards for 801 11 Wi-Fi.
Even under the best conditions you not going to get much of speed improvement by using some fancy high-priced adapter. And under bad conditions, there's not a whole lot you can do to make things better anyway. What I am saying is that them basic electronics used in these devices aren't made by the same companies and then somebody else puts their brand name on.
Here is one that works good for me.

Yeah, it is on eBay. But the price is right. Buy two, but different bay vendors. Still cheaper than buying it at Walmart.
I have two or three of these. They can apart because I was rough with them. But they did not fail electrically. I am a clumsy claus and I I broke it them pulling out of the USB jack. But they still work, just loose in the USB jack.

There are lot of these on eBay. You can look over the vendors that sell the same item for about the same price. I try to stay away from any vendor hat goes way below the average price of these unbranded items.
i'm looking for one that's not a lemon. why's it so hard to find information on this? Here is a scan of the package it came with.

Also, it comes with a driver mini-CD
And no, I do not rep sent any of these vendors.

i'm looking for usb 3.0 oneNot to mention you asked for 802.11ac, and that is 802.11n.

I have a PCI-E AC Card, the D-link DWA-582, (I didn't buy specifically from there, I used amazon.ca and didn't use the marketplace) It worked well for me when I used it. I switched to use my Ethernet with a long cord, for performance reasons related to my motherboard, not because of anything inherent to the card. Basically I didn't have enough slots and using the card means using my second x16 slot, however when both x16 slots are populated they will only run at x8, so my Graphics card was significantly impaired.

If you are looking for a USB Adapter, I cannot provide any recommendations. I've never had an AC one but the N and G USB adapters I had, while passable, were just that, and were still somewhat finicky.Quote from: jedimaster on February 11, 2017, 05:42:13 PM

Why? If you know of any reference that SAYS there is any advantage to using USB 3 for a Wi-Fi adapter, please let me know. I have never, ever seen a recommendation for USB 3.0 for a wireless adapter.
Quote
The now-aging USB 2.0 standard can theoretically transfer data at a very high 480 megabits per second (mbps), or 60 megabytes per second (MBps). That's impressive, but not as much as the newer USB 3.0, which can handle up to 5gbps (640MBps)—over ten times as fast as the 2.0 maximum.Jun 26, 2014
most type N Wi-Fi systems max out at 300megabits per second, in which case the USB 3.0 offers dubious improvement.

Even with USB 3.0 one would not reach the gigabit speed offer by many modern wired Ethernet devices.

There is a DOWNSIDE to USB 3.0 and wireless. Some USB 3.0 devices cause interference to the2.5 Ghz band, the more popular Wi-Fi band.

Still, the vendors offer USB 3.0 ** and if you want it that have it. As for me, I really would like to see some documentation that I would-be better using USB 3.0 for everything I have. I don't think so.

Put another way, USB 3 has higher max data compared to USB 2, but it is still not gigabit. The speed advantage is, IMO, marginal.

** USB 3.0 Wi-Fi adapters at Amazon.

Up to 867 Mbps speed on Wireless-AC 5 GHz band or Up to 300 Mbps speed on Wireless-N 2.4 GHz band
So yes, you can get near gigabit using both USB 3.0 and 802.11 ac for local network use.

The article you linked to about not being able to achieve gigabit speeds with wifi was written in 2013, I think most of the roadblocks listed would be eliminated today (better routers, better adapters, etc...) so it is probably much more achievable.i just found the one i need ASUS USB-AC68 but i don't want to pay for it at the price it costs any suggestions? From dictation.
The link you gave is for an item on Amazon. It has a split antenna, which is a requirement for meeting all of the specifications for the newest Wi-Fi standard. The Amazon price is about $90.
One could shop around to see if there's a slightly lower price for the brand name item, or one could accept a Chinese knockoff that may not have all the features.
One of the things you might want is the support from the brand name company. When you buy one of the copycat items from China you lose your opportunity to have direct support with the company that made the item.
Now, having said that, the chipset used in the brand name device may very well be the same chipset being used in one of the look-alike or workalike items that come from the Far East.
On that same link I noticed that Amazon features a competitive item that is very popular at a fraction of the cost. It goes for less than $20, but has only one antenna and is not have an extension cable. This could be an issue when you want the greatest possible range and highest bandwidth.
Now having said that, notice that this set low-cost item also is a dual band device and thus can overcome some of the interference problems found in older devices. Even so, the vice has to be mounted on the back of your desktop and may not be in the best position for optimum performance. My personal EXPERIENCE with this type of adapter has been positive. Only in a few cases have a found it necessary to make connections with the distant router. And when I did make a connection with the distant router I had to use a dual antenna device and the data speed was not very good.
The new 802.11 AC standard does not really guarantee you will have better performance than some of the older standards. It depends much on the environment and many other factors that cannot be changed by simply using a better Wi-Fi standard.
I would think that if one is willing to give up on the dual antennas and the ability to position the device for the best RECEPTION, the low cost item would be satisfactory. But that is my opinion. Here is the link that Amazon gives for the lower cost device that has most of the features you want.
https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dcomputers&field-keywords=ANEWKODI+600Mbps+Dual+Ban
I hope this helps.
EDIT: I just found this web site: http://anewkodi.com/
They offer a dual band adapter like the one in the Amazon link. But it is on sale for $10. I wonder if it is the same Amazon offers?

Solve : PC Network Problem, probably not the router?

Answer»

Hi Everybody, first of all i want to apologize in advance if my english isn't the best, but i find this forum very helpful so i'm going to do my best to make this understandable.
Ok, my PC seems to have some Network problems since 3 days. It isn't able to connect to my Home Network or to any WLAN at all. I already checked on my Router and rebooted it. My HANDY and other Computer (which is connected with an ethernet cable to it) seem to have a prefect connection, just my PC not. The PC is PRETTY old, it's an HP elitebook 8530w from at least 2008. I run it with two OS (Windows 7 and Linux Fedora 23 or 24, not sure, GNOME 3). It has till now worked without problems. I really don't even now what could have caused it. No downloads lately, no connecting to a new Network, nothing. I already tried on both OS, Windows doesn't show any WLAN Networks at all, only Dial Ups and VPN. Fedora TELL's me on the other hand that the PC is in Airplane MODE, and even tho i try to turn if off it won't let me. The option isn't even possible.
Any idea? THANKS in advance for answers
Already solved it, with the most embarrassing answer of all.
In Fedora i tried the "rfkill" command to figure out what was wrong and guess what i found out, my wifi was "hard blocked". (it deserves a facepalm)
Sorry for this stupid question, i can't believe that i didn't noticed it before (i didn't even knew that i could switch the Internet Connection on and off like this on my Laptop).
Anyway, lesson is learned

Solve : Complicated-- Laptop crashes wifi internet but all devices still receive signal?

Answer»

So I have had this ongoing issue for the past few months that if I open my laptop/connect to WIFI it completely depletes our internet for all devices in the house making nothing load for anyone other than the laptop I use- and that connection on the laptop is extremely slow. We updated the laptop, got a new router today and still the problem is not fixed.

I have an Asus K55V for a laptop, our router is Linksys AC1200

I've heard of similar problems where the laptop was creating issues similar to mine their solutions were:

 • Find the PROCESS Discover.exe in background processes and end it
 • Update a buggy samsung laptops DRIVERS?
neither of these solutions worked for me. I did not have "Discover.exe" in my processes. Can you connect the laptop with a wired CAT5 cable connection and Wireless turned off and see if it still brings network to its knees or behaves?

If it brings network to its knees with wired connection, are you familiar with Wireshark to look at packets to see what is being downloaded or uploaded to consume massive amounts of bandwidth by looking for IP addresses and then google searching them to see where the data is going or coming from? A download and or upload that is heavy should show up in Wireshark as a REPEATING IP Address since the packets would be pouring over the network causing a DoS type ATTACK to network or broadcast storm which brings network to its knees and all devices on that network in a packet pile up situation.

Solve : WiFi, modems, etc.?

Answer»

I'm considering splitting up my p.c, tv, internet, phone services. How do I go about the other devices I need to connect The MODEMS, wifi, whatever ! I have one pc, 2 tvs. & phones. Do I buy these devices, & where ? The cable companies charge a lot to rent. If I buy, what info do I need to buy the right device ? Thanks ! You need to be clear about what your WANT to do. All telecommunications systems for use in a urban AREA come under the control of commercial and government groups.

Now it you are out in a rural area away from services, you have to get your own electricity and get a satellite telephone system. Not cheap.

But if you are in the city, you have to go with EITHER a cable company or a cell phone company and pay what thy ask.

Nowadays the TV cables companies and the Cell phone companies are working together and they control the market. With a few exceptions.

There are a number of small cell phone operators that can offer phone and internet at a bargain price. But no TV.

If you want all three, expect to pay over $100 per month in much of the USA. And if you get it for $100 a month, it is a fair price.

Solve : something to share data on the network!?

Answer»

I need a device, rack or anything that i can use to share data on my network which i can access with my laptop and PC! Anything is ok if I can add hardrives to it to INCREASE the size i can add gradually!! Please help! What you want is Network Attached Storage.
This could be a Hard drive, a printer or a USB flash drive with the PROPER interface to the Ethernet.
For example:
My Netgear routers that have a USB stick option works. The router takes little power and can be left on all the time. I can get to mine from any PC in our LOUSE that has wireless or Ethernet.

Here is a link.
Netgear routers with USB.
Thank you! but using that will limit my storage capacity to like 1 TB or 4 TB for max! but i need something which i can always add storage in form of Hard Drives! is it possible? You can get a NAS that will take multiple hard drives and then expand it as your needs grow however you will be limited to however many drives the NAS you buy supports. First of all you should figure out how much storage you actually need/will need in the future.Another link.
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=1060
Also on Amazon and other stores.
As far as brands - Both QNAP and Buffalo make good NAS devices. You could also use a regular PC and install special software such as FreeNAS to turn it into a NAS - This would give you more control in terms of what hardware you use and how everything works but it is a bit harder to initially set up when compared to a plug-and-play premade NAS SOLUTION.

Solve : Linux at work?

Answer»

Hi. I'm trying to log on to my work place network using one of their wired Windows (7) computers RUNNING Ubuntu from a portable drive. To START off with I'm not OVERLY network savvy. The main problem that I'm encountering is identifying what type of network it is (as I said not overly savvy) and what security system is in use. So I'm having a hard time telling Linux what settings to use.

Also to make things clear, I have a LOGON username and password for the computers, so I'm not trying to bootlegging here.

So from a windows environment what's the best way for me to look up what network I'm using (I think it's VPN)?You will need to check with the IT department.

Some networks require a domain.

Some require certain security protocols.

Some are set only to allow certain IP address.Quote from: Rustys on March 09, 2016, 06:59:08 PM

You will need to check with the IT department.

Some networks require a domain.

Some require certain security protocols.

Some are set only to allow certain IP address.

I forgot to say there is a domain name to sign on with (I know the domain name though). IP shouldn't be a problem as I'm working from an existing workstation (just with a temporary OS). So it's just security protocols to be selected.

I may well ALREADY have all the information I need but not setting up correctly. Is there anything special that I need to do to Linux to sign on to a windows VPN? (Assuming I'm right about it being a VPN)

IT department is asleep [02:49]

My god that is some quality engrish in my first post.Out side of talking to IT department to have them help you preform this there is nothing else we can do to assist you.

Solve : Download Speeds Periodically Dropping?

Answer»

Hello!

So I have been experiencing some issues with download speeds. I have moved to a new apartment which already has a router and the problems I am having were not present on any devices prior to moving, which leads me to believe that this is an issue with this router or some router settings. Additionally, the issue does not OCCUR when I am connected to the router via ethernet cable. This is not, however, a viable long-term solution so I hope to figure out a solution to fix the problem. Here is some more information:

=== PROBLEM DESCRIPTION ===

Download speeds, regardless of download server, start out at acceptable speeds (7 - 11 MB/s), which lasts for LESS then ten SECONDS, at which time download speeds drop to ridiculously slow speeds (7 - 10 KB/s).

Very rarely, the download speeds will go back up again, but only for a few seconds at a time. It seems as if my wireless speeds are being throttled by the router. These results are completely reproducable: when I start any new download or restart the same download multiple times, speeds always start high and then tank.

=== SYSTEM / NETWORK INFO ===

System
Although probably unnecessary, my system information is included in the attached .TXT file.

Router
Fritz!Box 7490

ISP
Sunrise (Lugano, Switzerland)
http://www1.sunrise.ch/index-Sunrise-Residential-Site-WFS-en_CH-CHF.html?
Speed I pay for: ~120 Mb/s

=== CONCLUSION ===

I would appreciate any help you can provide! Are there any router settings that I need to check to ensure that speeds are not being throttled? Upon cursory inspection I could not find anything out of the ordinary.

Solve : Failed to Query TCP/IP Settings?

Answer»

I have two computers: assembled desktop running Windows XP, and an HP Laptop running V 10. My desktop connects to my Netgear router and TWC Ubee modem. I disconnected the Netgear router and wired directly into TWC Ubee Modem with both computers. Changed cabling to determine if it was a bad WIRE...laptop connects for now.

I ran Malwarebytes on my Desktop and no malware was DETECTED. My local AREA Connection status ~ Connected. Activity 0 packets. Connection status .... no IP, Subnet Mask, or Default Gateway. Diagnostics scan from auto repair: Could not retrieve current IP address. Seems I have a malware issue...any thoughts. Tommy 1) I moved this to networking because it's not clear that this is a malware issue. We can always move it back at a later date.

2) If you believe it's a malware issue, please run a scan with an anti virus app (do you have one installed?) in addition to MalwareBytes. I'm guessing that will also come up negative.

3) Did this just start? Does the system display any other ISSUES?

4) Could be a bad Ethernet card.2) If you believe it's a malware issue, please run a scan with an anti virus app (do you have one installed?) in addition to MalwareBytes. I'm guessing that will also come up negative. Ran Avast ~ no detection.

No other issues that I have experienced.
4) Could be a bad Ethernet card.
I'm thinking it's not the Ethernet card since it shows it is connected - showing duration - and 100.0 Mbps. For some REASON I can't enter service settings for the IP address.Quote

4) Could be a bad Ethernet card.
I'm thinking it's not the Ethernet card since it shows it is connected - showing duration - and 100.0 Mbps. For some reason I can't enter service settings for the IP address.

Open up command prompt and perform the following from computer with problem.

Enter this instruction at the command prompt and either copy/paste the info from it here or share the IP, Subnet, and Gateway info:

Code: [Select]IPCONFIG/ALL
Additionally run the following instruction to see if you can ping to google

Code: [Select]PING WWW.GOOGLE.COM
If the ping is successful then its not network adapter but another problem. If ping is unsuccessful then see if you can ping your router. Whatever gateway address is shown in the IPCONFIG/ALL output you will ping which is your routers IP to your local network

It might be 192.168.1.1 however it could be different:

Code: [Select]PING 192.168.1.1Thanks all who took time to reply to my issue...I have solved the problem with some time and thought. My Broadband and Local Network was confused...Local Network had all the appropriate checks for service, broadband was lacking check marks to enable TCP/IP connections to my router ~ NETGEAR. Once I checked all the boxes, I was able to connect. Thanks again for all your insight. Tommy

Solve : How much data do you use each month??

Answer»

The question is about the amount of DATA, not the speed.
If you have a hard wire connection, it may not matter how much you use.
However, some users have to use the Smart Phone with a 3G or 4G service to GET internet downloads. Streaming video or video downloads gobble up the large part of a data plan. Some users only have 100 mega bytes for data. That is OK for just some web surfing, but not so good for watching even short video clips.
But many of you watch video only on TV. -Ruggt? **
What about you? Does it matter to you? How much would you want to pay for more data.
** Footnote:
According to the A.C. Nielsen Co., the average American watches more than 4 hours of TV each day (or 28 hours/week, or 2 months of nonstop TV-watching per year). In a 65-year life, that person will have spent 9 years glued to the tube. Due to Roku playing streaming, Vonage VOIP phone, and 3 or more computers going at any one time my home averages around 40 gigs per month. Comcast has a feature in account info that shows graphs and how much usage there was. My computer I also have a network monitor on it which gives me total data up/down SINCE last hard RESET as well as up/down since boot. I use this tool to see if my home computer is being used as a seed for a free online game etc in which I kill off the seed for the torrent that I dont want to be a part of but still want to be able to play the games.~250 GB a month looking at my ISP website. Cap is 480GB per month before I pay more (Canadian ISP's introduced tiered data caps a few years ago)

Quote

But many of you watch video only on TV.
I don't even pay for Cable. According to my router I transfer around 300gb a month - My connection has practically unlimited transfer.I used about 3 gigs of my 5 gb of mobile data last month on my phone.... idk about home internet.....

if I can reduce my data to 1.5 GB a month from 5GB/month I can save $20 a month going from $60/month to $40/month but idk if I can do that....

Metro PCS had the best plan but I got no service anywhere I frequently visit so they went out the door for Page Plus (only way to get unlimited Verizon data) and have 5GB of 4G "LTE" with page plus and even though all the plans are unlimited I can't stand 2G mobile data so I try not to go over 5GB/month

Solve : Does your data plan let you watch Netflix??

Answer»

For this post I'm again using voice recognition. Some errors may occur.

Does your data plan let you watch Netflix?
Same question could be ASKED for other video streaming services, such as You tube or Amazon. In a video stream takes up much more bandwidth than simple webpages with basic graphics and a few animated features.
Now if you are an individual that has really unlimited bandwidth available, then this does not apply to you at all. But a number of us do not have that luxury because neither AT&T or Comcast will offer wired services in all areas. This is especially true of the semi rural areas outside the suburbs of some towns and cities. Although the cable and telephone companies already have services in these areas, the services needed to be upgraded to allow for high quality broadband connections. This is relative to services found in the United States. In other countries the conditions could vary quite a bit.
Now back to topic. Many individuals find the only practical way to get Internet is to pay for data usage over the 3G or 4G telephone networks. This cell tower networks are everywhere, even in some rural areas there is coverage by a cell tower. It has become the most universal communications available in the United States as well as many other parts of the world. You can get so tower service even in areas where there are no telephone poles or power lines available.
Now then, I am ONE of those individuals that has to rely on the cellular phone service to get a connection into the Internet. Both my daughter and I have telephone plans that include unlimited data. The cost is $60 a month for each of us, so the total bill is $120. Because we are a family we do get a little bit of reduction, about $10 off the total price. Still, it is a rather expensive way to have an Internet service.
Now you may be thinking about the use of a hotspot. Good idea, but the carriers also restrict the use of hotspots. If I use a hotspot to provide connection to more devices, a limit is put on how much data I can use inside of one month on my hotspot. Now let me get the point of this post.
Below is a link that explains the problem of using Netflix or some other video service over the system that has a On data usage. Bear in mind that the term on limited data does not mean you can always get as much data as you WANT for streaming videos. It means only that you can get enough data to check your e-mail and review websites, but not always enough speed to get video streaming. In other words, they effectively put a cap on video streaming by putting a hidden limit on how much data you can get in a month. That does not sound like unlimited data, yet this is how it is advertised. They EXPLAINED that there is a cap on the data but you can still get data. Read the fine print. It says at first you'll get the high-speed data of EITHER a 4G or 3G network. Then if you go over a certain limit, such as 10 GB, then your data stream will slow down to a crawl that does not allow video streaming of any quality.
So that is in essence my understanding of the current situation with many of us who want to use the Internet to watch movies found on Amazon, Netflix and YouTube. Somewhere I read that there is no such restriction if you are using Comcast. As far as I know, that is true. But Comcast is a hardwired connection and does not have the kind of issues that cell phone towers have. The cell phone tower has to handle a whole lot of communications from many people scattered over a large area. The cable company has their use is divided up by direct wires which means that in effect the total bandwidth for Comcast is much much greater than what you would have for any cell tower. If you have some information to the contrary, please respond.
Now here's the deal. It has been said, somewhere, that there is a special deal with Netflix and Amazon and some of the other services that you can get as much streaming data as you want as long as it is only from one of the preferred services. That would imply that some other video streaming services would not have that privilege and if you watched streaming video on one of their services your service will become stuck.
I here's the bad part. Once you hit the data limit you are stuck in low gear until the end of your current billing cycle. This is very painful if you do a lot of video watching at the early part of the month and then all of a sudden they get stuck in low speed and then you can't watch anything. That has happened to me.
Now my big gripe about this is that it's not well documented or covered in any information I could find. It's only on forums like this that users can express their frustrations and confusion about what's going on.
So if you know are out more about this that I do, please come back and respond.
Here is one of the key stories that explains what this is all about.

Solve : Sniffing Set top boxes?

Answer»

Hi all,

I'am trying to SNIFF the traffic of set top box which is connected to local 5 port netgear switch,
all i can see is udp streams and ssdp requests and that too from different ip address which is not reachable if i try to ping / nmap
also Set top box ip address is like 192.168.x.x and from that i can only see ssdp requests and none other evident traffic like
authentication/any other port -ip connection /protocols etc
so the question arises here is , am i doing it right ? or i need to do something like port forwarding or port mirroring ?
i won't be able to do such thing i think because the switch DOESNT have any such interface of changing configurations i guess.
any suggestions or advice will be very helpful.

THANKS !Why do you want to do that?
What tools are you musing?
Either hardware or software?

This was popular a few years back.

Excellent tool for learning about your home network. Easy way to share folders and printers. Displays a visual map of your network in real time.
But even the above report goes on to say it has limits.
I'm using just wireshark to know what traffic is passing other than ssdp and udp streams, but it seems it only captures passively.
and i'm doing this to analyse STB traffic / information it sends across the network.Your switch will be routing most of the traffic directly to the correct port (such as the one going out to the internet) so the PC doing the sniffing won't see many of the packets from the STB. Therefore you would need something like port mirroring however this of course requires a switch that supports it. A couple of cheaper options would be to connect the STB directly into your PC and use it to provide an internet connection to the box such as through Windows's internet connection sharing. You could also pick up a cheap, used *hub* as this will blindly forward packets to all ports allowing you to sniff them (much like you get with a switch with port mirroring).thanks cameron,
that was quite informative from you, so now another question is .. can i setup a server which STB communicates directly to on my MACHINE?
if yes does anyone has such information on kind of server that has to be setup?

Solve : Problems with opening ports?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
I had a question about ports ... excuse me if this sound so BASIC i REALLY don't understand these kind of stuff... . So i have been trying to open 2 ports (443 and 5222) for gaming reasons but no matter how hard i try i fail. I forwarded the ports using my router (linksys has a special tab for application and gaming) and i also added a rule in my antivirus (ESEt NOD32) but i tried this site (canyouseeme.org) to see if i succeeded in opening them and it GAVE me this : Error: I could not see your service on [My IP Adress] on port (433)
I asked a few friends who had no problem with these ports to check it out and they both got the same error. I even checked the port 80 (which is usually open) and the site gave me the same error.
So here are my questions: Is it possible for the site to be wrong? are there any other secruity levels that check ports?and how can i forward these 2 ports?
Thank you so much for reading Your ISP might be BLOCKING ports. I have had to USE different ports such as 8077 to get around ISP port blocking. Are you all using the same ISP to know if its an ISP block or a misconfiguration with your router.

Solve : can't find wireless connection?

Answer»

I was running a AVG scan on my HP laptop when the power went out. When I got it back on my computer would not boot up properly so I found a place to restore it to original state. Then I COULD not get on the Internet unless I put the Ethernet CORD in computer. I had wireless connection before and wireless is working everywhere else in the house. How do I find out if my wireless card is working or not? It does not automatically find area connections anymore where it used to list my neighbors in the area. I have a Westell router model 7500 and my computer is the only thing affected in the house.
I had UPDATED my computer to WINDOWS 10 and when it got RESTORED to factory default it is now Windows 8.1. Don't know if this matters or not.check device manager to see if the wireless card is working
go to the manufacturer's support site and download the latest wifi drivers
check if there is a function key that turns the wifi on and off
check if there is a hardware switch that turns the wifi on and off
What kind of wireless device is this ? ?
Reason i ask is if it wasn't onboard on the PC and it's let's say a USB dongle then it's drivers were wiped out after the restore...
So if external device simply re-install the drivers for the unit and set up a new wirelless connection...

Solve : problem to connect remoteley to my brother laptop (windows81.1 pro )?

Answer»

I have a slow PC(windos xp) and my brother have a good Laptop (windows8.1 pro) and i want to connect from my PC remotely to his laptop(we live in the same room),sorry for my english. So we also have a router and i think i made all the right changes,i also checked on both computers:

-allow users to connect remotely
-on his computer i create 2 users and then i added both users to ''Select Remote Users'' and everything went perfect i was able to connect remotelly on his laptop but now comes the problem:when he ''shut down'' the laptop I can not connect remotelly to his laptop anymore, how to fix that?

Here are his Ip's and are the only changes i made to the router config.
Virtual servers:

Code: [Select]Service Port Internal Port IP Address Protocol Status MODIFY
1 3389 3389 xxx.xxx.0.101 ALL Enabled Modify DeleteDHCP/Adress Reservation

Code: [Select]ID MAC Address Reserved IP Address Status Modify
1 B0-C0-90-44-69-25 xxx.xxx.0.101 Enabled Modify Delete
I use this wan IP to connect remotelly:

WAN
MAC Address: 00-13-8F-1C-08-3A
IP Address: x.xx.201.149 PPPoE(Connect Automatically)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255

the remote computer dones not have a WOL on BIOS settingsQuote

problem:when he ''shut down'' the laptop I can not connect remotelly to his laptop anymore, how to fix that?

Are you saying you want to connect to his system when its been shut down or after a shutdown and reboot it no longer works?

Port 3389 is the common RDP port so WONDERING why your using RDP between 2 computers in the same room?

Are you trying to connect with internet connection sharing where his laptop gets an internet connection and then you can then connect thru his laptop as the gateway shared internet connection or are you two using RDP ( Remote Desktop ) between both SYSTEMS in which only 1 person can use each computer at a time because the one that is in use remotely by the other is unusable. *Last i KNEW RDP only allows 1 person at a time to use workstation based OS's. Its only on the server side of things that you can have terminal sessions with multiple people sharing a single system. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_Desktop_Services

Lastly being in the same room you would connect over the LAN, you wouldnt go over the WAN out through router and back to your brothers computer. You would simply know that your brothers computer is at a specific IP or Name and connect to it that way. Setting up the laptop to use a static IP would be the easiest. As long as the laptop is RUNNING and RDP service is available, you would connect local IP to say 192.168.1.12 if his static IP is 192.168.1.12. This requires static entries for the subnet mask and gateway for the network that its connected to.

Re-reading what you have, you say your XP computer is slow and want to connect to your brothers laptop remotely. So you want to experience the speed of his computer and have your Windows XP computer act like 8.1 maybe through a remote session to his system in which stuff is more responsive possibly. But the only catch is that that laptop will only allow 1 person at a time to use it. So If he is using his laptop, you wont be able to have a session open on his system at the same time. It will lock his computer on him when you have remote desktop access. Additionally Multimedia and Video Games are horrible and some down even work through RDP. You would be able to surf the web, download stuff to his system and not your own, and make changes at his system to local files and thats about it.I'm locking this thread. Please do not post the same question more than once.

Also, please watch your language. Thank you.As Allan says, an IP address is public information, there is really nothing secret about it, there should be no need to hide it.it's for gaming purposes nothing illegal, i'm just trying to play with different " character"If what you are doing is legitimate then there is no reason to change/hide your IP address. This sounds like there is some restriction in place that you are trying to GET around.then you don't know how battlefield works, if you change your ip doesn't give you anything, in battlefield what it matters is the guid, i'm just trying to change my ip so i can't get recognized by other players, that's it (:I'm not trying to get unbanned or anything ( it's impossible to get unbanned or to trick the system ) i just want to change these random numbersSubscribe to a different ISP. Sometimes you can get the ISP to change your IP address as well, though they'll tend to ask for a reason and "I want to pwn n00bs" probably isn't sufficient.

There is nothing private about an IP address; your PC and other devices all share it with every website or server that you connect to; it's a requirement, because otherwise it would be like sending mail with no return address. A Game server can't send your game client information about the game state or changes in the game unless it knows where to send it, which is why it needs your IP Address.

There are VPN services you can use as well, however aside from it being unlikely to get assistance with that here, typically the use of VPNs is banned in the Terms of Service of online game services, which, I suppose would accomplish your goal of not being recognized though it would do so through a IP and possible even hardware fingerprint ban, depending on the PARTICULARS of the game.

hmmmm only asked you to leave .... Thinking you wouldnt get off that lightly and would be arrested for a short while until nothing found and released. Maybe its a regional thing, but in my area if you go into a bank with even sunglasses on they have a finger on the silent alarm ready to press it. I have been asked before to remove my sunglasses which I forget they are on my face when coming in from outside where its bright and sunny to inside a bank with bright lights. The bank even has a police station 2nd building down from it which a criminal would really have to be a certain level of special to try to rob that location that close to a police presence. Solve : Ethernet not working?

Answer»

So I randomly woke up one day and I noticed my ethernet wasnt working but my wifi was. I assumed the plug was unplugged but it wasnt. So i troubleshot the problem and it came up with the issue that the window socket registry entries required for network connectivity are missing. So I did basic troubleshooting. Made SURE the driver was updated, reset the winsocket in the command prompt along with the tcp/ip. I then tried to manually delete the winsocket off the computer and reinstalling it but i was unable to because the group policy didnt allow me to. I finally gave up and just factory restored my laptop hoping that it would work again and sadly it did not. So im stuck here and after a little bit more INVESTIGATING I found out that there isnt an updated driver for windows 10 for my ethernet driver. But then I found numerous accounts of people just using the driver for windows 8 and that seemed to work for them but it didnt work for me. I havent tried using the winsockets from window 8. because my computer upgrades from 7 to 10. Any other possible solutions? My driver is Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30) version 2.1.0.21bumpYou might have better luck with buying a cheap $15-$20 USB to RJ45 ethernet adapter that supports Windows 10 and go that route. From system restore back to factory original non windows 10 OS, did this adapter run fine up until Windows 10 upgrade?

Its not uncommon for an older computer to not have DRIVERS for Windows 10. I have a laptop myself that is running 7 and I went to accept the upgrade and it came back and told me that my chipset is too out of date to support 10. Windows 10 is not perfect for detecting and FLAGGING all incompatible hardware/devices. To the OS it could say the Ethernet Chip initialized correctly with say a legacy driver, and yet be non functional.

Solve : Why is it saying server not found??

Answer»

When clicking on Firefox, it says server not found, if I click on IE it says not connected to network. We just replaced the AT&T modem because last one fried. If I manually turn off computer at TOWER and reboot it will usually work but not for long. The wifi works fine with our hand held devices so I know AT&T won't help. No issues with previous modem, I didn't change anything with the connections or the computer itself. Any ideas on how to resolve or troubleshoot this? Running windows 7 on a hpDo you connect CABLE or WIRELESS?

Remember that this is a different modem even though same service so the SSID and the Password will be different.

You will probably need to ACCESS the modem with a system via cable and configure it for you settings. How would I do this? I didn't see anything flagged in device manager. When I went to network settings and troubleshoot devices, nothing happened. Not sure where to go to configure modem. You will have to connect via cable to the modem and open a BROWSER window and type in the IP address of the modem.

From what I can find on the ATT site should be:

Type 192.168.1.254 in the address bar and press the Enter key to log into the modem's interface.Did you try deleting the Network and re-creating it in Control Panel/Networks ? ?

Solve : Can I teether my Android Phone to my Windows PC via USB??

Answer»

The mobile plan I have puts a limit on using my Wi-Fi HOT spot. But I do not have another reliable Internet connection. So I was thinking about using the USB tethering option of Windows 7/8/10 to bypass the Wi-Fi hot spot.
I found this:

If you are using a cheap mobile data plan for internet, you don’t need to have separate DSL or other MODES of internet for using on your PC. USB tethering PROVIDES you the ease to use your mobile net on your PC. The technique to USB tether Android ...
He says it also works on Windows 7. I suppose it works for Windows 10. Does it?
Here is the link:

Has anybody here done this? Does it get around the extra charge for a 'Hot Spot'?
Any help?

Your link didn't work so don't know exactly what was being linked to. However, I have used PDANet software from this website: http://junefabrics.com/ in order to tether my phone to my computer via USB for internet ACCESS. PDANet/FoxFi can be used to create a wifi hotspot on a SMARTPHONE as well. Neither require the extra charge for the 'Hotspot' feature. I'm sure you are aware that using your phone is this way will chew up data very quickly.

Thank you.

Solve : Please help me isolate the issue(Powerline Adapter+Router)?

Answer»

So... The issue I am currently having first: Unidentified network/No network access.

I've been using the current powerline adapter(NETGEAR XWN5001) to access the router located downstairs for approximately 6 months. I do not use the WIFI option at all and exclusively use the wired setup of the adapter.

Three days ago, the aforementioned issue started occurring after a night's worth of computer shut down. I turned the computer on, Local Area Connection was stuck "identifying" for GOOD 2-3 minutes, after which it turned into Unidentified network/No network access that I am suffering from. I tried the most basic(and the only) fix I know of, which is unplug everything, wait 2 minutes, power on modem->power on router->plug in adapter downstair->plug in adapter upstair->turn on DESKTOP. Unfortunately, this did not change a single thing(As I relied on this "fix" for decades, I attempted this method at least 5 times hoping the next try would magically fix everything).

The main problem is that I do not know which part of the "network map" is broken... My setup goes: Wall->Modem->Linksys E900 Router->XWN Adapter(downstairs)->XWN Adapter(Upstsairs)->Desktop. I'm fairly certain that this is not a modem/router issue since I can connect to the internet(with very feint signal) using the desktop's WIFI to access the router(with or without the adapters plugged in). So the problem must be within the powerline adapters, right?

However, what perplexes me the most is this: When I access the router using the WIFI, the XWN5001 appears as one of its DHCP clients on LAN interface with an assigned IPv4 Address. When I access the XWN5001 adapter itself using the IPv4 address(typed in browser), it says that its LAN port has IP address, DHCP turned on, and SUBNET mask+gateway IP address are also visible. Doesn't this mean that there's a working connection between the router and adapters?

I can connect to neither the router nor the adapter without WIFI enabled(Shouldn't I be able to if there's a working connection between the router and adapters since everything is wired?).

So... I'm at my wit's end. The modem connects to internet fine, the router seems to work fine(connects to internet via WIFI as mentioned), router seems to be connected to adapters and assign their IP addresses fine, adapter seems to be connected to the computer via ethernet cable fine(I can connect directly to modem with powerline adapters and internet works), but somewhere along the line, the assigned IP address is lost and ipconfig returns APIPA IPv4 address(169.254.x.x) with blank default gateway value when I try ipconfig /all.

Your insight would be greatly appreciated....

Edit: Should've included things I've tried since two days ago(Problem's going on for three):

1. Restart modem/router/adapters/computer
2. Reset TCP/IP Stack with https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/299357 (Actually tried both manual and microsoft fixit)
3. Disable/Enable the LAN adapter
4. Disabled Anti-virus/Firewall
5. ipconfig /release and /renew as administrator ( /renew says "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.")
6. Attempted updating router+adapter firmwares (Both say they are already up to date).
7. Checked DHCP Client service to ensure that it is "Started" and "Automatic." Please clarify this
Quote

My setup goes: Wall->Modem->Linksys E900 Router->XWN Adapter(downstairs)->XWN Adapter(Upstairs)->Desktop.
what is a "XWN Adapter?"
You should have only one device doing DCHP. However, I am not familiar with your XVN adapter. But I doubt it could just change by itself. If you did not change anything, the most liely cause would be either a hardware failure or somebody has installed another device nearby that interferes with your poser line connection.

I would try this: Put both power line units in the same room end see if a good connection can be made. This would confirm they are working normally.

Sorry, I should've just said powerline adapter instead of "XWN Adapter."

I have no idea if powerline adapter always had "DHCP: ON" when everything used to work correctly. Since that appears to be the default value after resetting to factory settings, I can only imagine it did.

I do believe the power lines by themselves are functioning fine since I can connect directly to the modem using the power line adapters from upstairs(Wall->Modem->Powerline downstairs->Powerline upstairs->Desktop). It stops functioning when I introduce the router into the equation, which obviously means that router is creating the issue.

I just do not understand how that can be when it lists the powerline adapter as one of its DHCP clients and apparently assigns an IP value(which, again, somehow gets lost when I try ipconfig on desktop). <---- I have poor networking knowledge and maybe this means nothing and they aren't connecting/communicating correctly at all?

I have no idea if this would help, but here's my ipconfig /all...

Solve : 2 new computers, want to set up a Homegroup?

Answer»

My system on desktop:
Windows 10 with Intel I-7, 8 MB Ram, 1 TB HD.

My system on laptop:
Windows 10 with Intel I-5, 8 MB Ram, 1 TB HD.

Desktop is CONNECTED to a modem via an ethernet cable, and the laptop is connected to the same modem via wireless. Both connect fine to the Net.

PROBLEM:
I have a new desktop and a new laptop. I wish to connect the two via a Homegroup so that I can use the Printer that is connected to the desktop's printer.
I have created a Homegroup on the desktop by following the instructions from Microsoft's Win10.

The laptop cannot 'see' the Homegroup, and only wants to set up it's own Homegroup.

I have tried all the settings on both computers, but the laptop still can't 'see' the Homegroup. I know I'm doing something wrong.

Can anyone HELP with this problem? Is file and print sharing enabled on both PC's ? ?It turns out it was a Firewall issue on my desktop.

Problem solved. Thanks patio for pointing me in the right direction.

Solve : WiFi adapter not detecting WLAN network(s)?

Answer»

Hello People of the Internet,

As the title says: I ordered a Realtek WLAN USB dongle
( Realtek RTL8192EU WLAN 802.11n USB 2.0 ) for a friend to -as you've probably guessed- help him surf the internet.
the laptop we (read I) am trying to connect, is an Acer Extensa 5630EZ Running Win7 (was built for Win Vista)
Had a pretty hard time finding a Driver for this baby (cd was not working properly) since this product is not acknowledged by the company. i managed to find the original .ISO image file and thus extracted and install the driver.

My problem is simple (sarcasm )
While all was working just fine before, i now have to restart the system and wait for circa 10 minutes for the networks to show
(i have another laptop just next to it which works fine) then when they finally show up i still can't connect!

If you have any idea what this could be or need any further details feel free to spam the comment section :p

Thanks in advance

ShadyThe best solution is try another Wi-Fi adapter. Some models of Wi-Fi adapters have chip sets that are not fully supported in all regions of the world. Possibly you have acquired a chip set made by Realtek that was not intended for use in this market.
In any case, using a Wi-Fi adapter from a different supplier should solve the problem.
Presently, Wi-Fi to USB adapters are low-cost items. You do not need to buy $30 adapters, the ones that sell for $15 will work just as good for most situations in a home environment.
thank you for your reply

Please explain your thought about these chipsets not being compatible? how do they work? what exactly makes them incompatible?

I know i could just buy a new one buuuuuut i am not like that. i have a problem and i don't want the easy solution. the easy way is the DUMB way Here is my way of reasoning. I have been in the electronics business for years and years and have seen how the industry has both standards and non-compliance to standards.
Here is some recent info to consider:
List of Wi-Fi Chipset Vendors
The Market Landscape of Key WiFi Semiconductor Vendors
Chipset vendors fight to stand out

Of curse, Wi-Fi chips are not as complex as smartphone chips. Still, they compete for the best market share worldwide. Wi-Fi standards can a d do vary by region. So just slight differences in design my have a competitive advantage. Some makers are reluctant to offer free downloads o the drivers needed for Windows PCs. The driver software is only available on a CD for a certain region and it is included in the package.

Here are some random Realtek
RTL8188SU - Realtek
Rtl8187l - Realtek
RTL8192CU - Realtek
realtek 3070 wifi chip
RTL8187SE
Realtek RTL8723BU chipset
Realtek RTL8187L Chipset

Finding the best driver for each chip can be a tough job. Some might be the same. To make things worse, some chips may look like a chip made by Reltek but coul be a PIRATE company. And the pirate chip might work almost the same.
Here is a video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mG-FbBl9dJI
Not a good video, but see the sidebar for others videos about the same issue.

Sop I would buy a Wi-Fi adapter from a vendor who OFFERS refund and/or support.

Thank you for the large amount of info.
I'll keep the adapter so i can toy AROUND with it. after all my question is always "what can i make this do"
i'll tell my friend to get another adapter.

Thank you for your time

ShadyYou are welcome.

Solve : Internet randomly stopping downloads??

Answer»

I am downloading an update for CS:GO and and randomly my internet starts slowing down then about 5 seconds later it starts SLOWLY going back up. Proof: HTTP://i.imgur.com/WGmTZzv.pngSo much can cause this... looks to be throttling. Could be ISP or Steam, or others on network that your on using BANDWIDTH at same time as download. For example netflix and other streaming content can request downloads of segments of the info to cache to play and at just about timed intervals it will request the next SEGMENT of the stream to cache to play as the prior segment has played out. This will cause up and down speeds.Quote

IMO you MAY have to change to another ISP.

Solve : VPN Setup?

Hello,

This might be a stupid question to most of you but i apologize in advance as im not great with networking and its something i would like to learn.

I would like to setup a VPN - reason is i want to connect to my home network from outside (now i know i need a ddns or atleast a static ip which is fine thats taken care of)

I have an ISP modem/router(all in one crap) with dhcp disabled and a windows server(DHCP service) running and that is what gives out my ip addresses...

Is there a way i can run a vpn server without buying a second router and trying to configure that mess? haha.

Thank you in advanceYou should be able to set up a VPN server on the Windows machine that is providing DHCP. So i have a windows server that is providing the DHCP - also note that i want to connect from outside of my network INTO my network. windows has a built in service for this?

With OpenVPN what would i need to do ?

Solve : Has USB Network Tether been removed from WIndows??

Answer»

USB Network Tether is a way of getting internet connection lfrom a phone to a PC. Many say that it used to work well in WINDOWS 7, 8 and 10. But for some sreason it no longwer works.
It is a feature found on most new Android Smarplhones. There a re many articles on lllhow to enable it so you can get Internt on you desktop or laptop Windows machine whne a Intgernet connetion is not readily available. Handy if you more or travel. Or faorgot to pay the ISP.
My question is: Has it been removed from Winmdows?
Doing a Google search I FIND that two years ago everybody could do it. But now people are reporting taht it no longer works.
Example: One user bought a new Windws Machiine after being told tghat Windows 10 sujpports USB tether. The user was unable to get it to work. He tokk it back and the gave him a refund. So he reverted to his old compuiter and the USB tether still wokrs. This is not a one-time story. Others echo it.

So, what do you know? Is the USB teter histgory?

Footnote: Found on Tether.com
Tether.com is no longer accepting new customers and existing customers will continue to have access until July 31, 2016
What Why? Quote

Has it been removed from Winmdows?
No. Tethering is not a Windows feature. When an Android device is configured to Tether it appears as a USB Network adapter (Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device) to the system. This is the same regardless of the host OS.

Are you having a specific problem? If so, By now you should know we thrive on details; without more details all I can think of would be to make SURE you are using the right USB cable for the device. (I have three cables that plug perfectly into my Nexus 6. Only one of them works for accessing files on the phone or tethering.- the one that came with it.

"Tether.com" is a service for blackberry devices. Android and iOS include network tethering.
I just tested with my phone (LG G2) connected to my Win 10 laptop and was able to use USB tethering. However, I use a little program called PDANet to enable USB tethering. PDANet has 2 components, one that runs on your PC and another that runs on your phone. PDANet also COMES with FoxFi which allows enabling the wifi hotspot on my phone.

As BC_Programmer pointed out, it's not a function of Windows. It's necessary to enable USB DEBUGGING on your phone as well as have a capable cable.

Here's an article describing how to tether using PDANet: http://www.pcworld.com/article/199280/How_To_Tether_Your_Android_Phone_For_Free.html

BTW, I posted this while tethered to my phone via USB.Thanks to both.
I tried other cable. Now it works on Windows 7 and Windows 10.
Still does not work on Windows XP. Anyway, two out of three is good for me.

Windows 10 USB tether has a lot of verbiage.

I can find the ip adress from my 2 computers and the ip from my external DHCP server.

Thx for the help From command prompt: ipconfig /all Enter
I KNOW that i can find the gateway with ipconfig /all but why he is not in the arp table?

In an ETHERNET local area network, however, addresses for attached devices are 48 bits long. (The physical machine address is also known as a Media Access CONTROL or MAC address.) A table, usually called the ARP cache, is used to maintain a correlation between each MAC address and its corresponding IP address.
Am I missing something here? My router IP and MAC are SHOWING when I do this

Solve : Able to tell if on a public vs. private wifi connection?

Answer»

Hello everyone!

I hope you are all having a good day.

I have a question to which I have been given conflicting answers.

If I am logged into my company's portal to do WORK, could they know for sure if I am using private or public WIFI to connect to the internet?

Secondly, if I am overseas, can I be fairly CERTAIN they won't know if I'm in another country if I use a VPN? I am told mostly yes on this one, if the VPN provider is reliable. They prefer that work is done on North American soil.

I would appreciate any feedback.

You really need to talk to a workmate lyour trust. Trying to sidesstep yuour companies Internet policy is not a good idea.
A trusted workmatre might tell you if the company does not enforce or monitor the policy. Many Internet Servie Providers will give you a connection that is secure and not available to your companies inspection, unless you have already consented to such a thing.

Depending on the kind of work you do, you may be able to do ssome, if not all, lyou work offline. When at a public Wi-Fi, yhou can use a firewall to prevent others from looking intoyour computer. Or, just use another computer when travelling. Make it a bare MACHINE tghat has no personal information or files used in your work. Also, in windows you can password protect a directory to make it hard for an intgrutder to see yuour work. Other OS has similar features.

If you need to send afile over the Intgernet, consider using a secure cloud servier. Most of theres can used anywhere in the world if you have the password for lyour private cloud service.

Whenever you conect to a cloud service, theconnection is secure and hard to intercept. Even if the Wi-Fi has been compromised, the transmission is encryted when connected to a good cloud service.
IMO, a good cloud service is your best option to protect your privacy in a resonable way.

I very much appreciate your response and all the valuable info you gave me.

Would a VPN be worth my time then?

I just don't understand how an employer would know if you're using public or private wifi when working on their site. I'm far from being a computer scientist. LOL.

This policy isn't strictly enforced anyways. It's just what they say.

If you are accessing it through a website, then there is no reliable way for them to tell from the server side.

If it is a policy then you should abide by it. "If they can't find out, then I'm allowed" doesn't seem to be a wise approach to this.I thank you very much BC_programmer for your post. It has been helpful.

But the question wasn't whether I should or should not do this (I know this risks), but rather, how is it possible? I want to know the networking science behind it, and if it's possible.

What bothers me about technology and science is that we're all kept in the dark. And when we computer science illiterates try to find out a why or a how to something as it pertains to the subject, we get chastised to keep us further in the dark. Besides, it's no skin off your back to tell me up front (yes, I understand that you may have been telling me not to break the rules for my own good). And none of us is the saint behind closed doors as we appear at times in the public forum. All of us break rules at times - it's inevitable. It's like lying - sometimes you just have to in order to survive.Point being when it comes to workplace rules...however inane we cannot and do not advise on skirting them for liability reasons...Quote from: patio on April 28, 2016, 10:08:04 AM

Gotcha!

But I am interested in how it's possible to know such a thing, even if I have no intentions of breaking a rule. That's a fair question.Sorry, but we prefer not to respond. I'm sure there are lots of other forums that would be willing to help. I'm going to lock this thread at this point.

Solve : Very strange problem about homegroup?

Answer»

So, I have rather STRANGE problem at my office and honestly I don't KNOW what to do anymore. We have 5 pc's in my office, 3 of them use windows XP and they are connected to the router by ETHERNET cable. The remaining 2 pc's use windows 7 OS and are connected by wi-fi. We have ENABLED file sharing on all pc's, printer sharing, turned off windows firewall for private network and are connected in a homegroup named OFFICE. Internet is working fine for all pc's, but listen to this, sometimes we can get in each other's folders, sometimes we can't. The problem is with the 2 pc's that are USING windows 7 and are connected over wi-fi, we can't see them or see others on them. I read a lot and tried a lot, but nothing helps, when it doesn't work, we reset the connection 1 or 2 times and we see each other again. Anyone have any clue? Thank you very much if you at least try to help me.

Hi

On iTunes (which doesn't require Wi-Fi/Internet) I'm able to listen to music just fine but when I try to listen to spotify, use pandora, or watch videos on netflix and youtube the screen just stays frozen and nothing plays. Advice?Assuming your using a Mac COMPUTER and running into this issue?

Assuming otherwise everything else is fine and healthy and the content is frozen on loading it sounds like its an issue with flash or media player as part of the browser. UNFORTUNATELY my Mac HELP is limited but it sounds browser related with the viewer such as adobe flash needs to be updated or reinstalled etc. Which browser are you using and have you tried using a different browser to see if that would help solve this?

ADDITIONALLY which version of Mac OS are you running if its a Mac... OSX etc?

Solve : Help with Hardwire Connection to Internet?

Answer»

Hi,
I have an HP p7-1054 6GB 64 Bit Windows 7 Home Premium

One morning my hardwired Local Area Connection just stopped working. Every other computer oin the house on this ROUTER works fine. I tried calling my provider they said everything looks fine on their end and that I should try changing the cable to my computer that connects to the router. So I put a brands NEW one in and I still have the same exact problem.
I have tried unplugging everything and restarting the router several times and everything conmects fine other than this same computer. I can connect wirelessly via TP-Link but I cannot connect with my hardwired Local Area Connection.

When I run the trouble shooter SOMETIMES it says that I have an IP address conflict. I have tried rebooting the router as I said several times which should fix that issue but it does not. I have also tried running the command prompt to release and REQUEST a new ip address but that gives me error messages.
Please help. Thank you in advance.Well I finally fixed this thing. After troubleshooting with all of the obvious stuff, I went back to check any updates since the day it gave me trouble. There was a windows update on the list the evening before I had all of the trouble.

I found Microsoft.Net Framework 4.6.1
When I RIGHT clicked to uninstall it , it opened a window that also offered a "repair" option. I figured I'd try the repair before trying the uninstall. It took a few minutes.

I rebooted and it showed both the hard wired and the wireless were properly connected after the start up connected. Just to make sure, I disconnected the wireless and sure enough Im on the hard wired LAN / Ethernet connection as I write this.

Hope this helps someone else before they go buying another cable as I did. Or worse, before they buy another computer or replace an ethernet port needlessly.
Regards
MadisonThanks for sharing.
Sometimes just talking about a problem helps.

Solve : adhoc in win 10?

Answer»

don't know if this has been COVERED but I wanted to know how I can create an adhoc connection so I can SHARE my internet via my laptop. I upgraded from win 7 to 10 and I can't see that functionality in win 10 to create such a connection.

thanks,
BennyNever mind guys solved the issue. I was abit lazy to do some DIGGING of my own

here is how I went about it

- STARTED command prompt (admin) option - right click on the start button and you will see that option

- paste this command: netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=adhocname key=password
(you can change adhocname and password to your PREFERRED option b4 pasting it on the cmd )

- then paste : netsh wlan start hostednetwork

- Open the View network connections

- Right-click your Ethernet connection and select Properties and switch to the Sharing tab

- Check the “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection” option, and choose the newly created WiFi connection from the drop down list located under “Home networking connection”

this wireless connection is accessible to both phones and computers

Solve : Weird. Unknown wired network shows up in Wireless list!?

Answer»

I'm running Mint 17.3 --

I've googled this with many search terms to no avail. Hopefully someone here can link me to the explanation, or type it out for me.

A couple hours ago, I'd lost my wifi connection to the router - which is very unusual. I'm not broadcasting the SSID, so I simply bring up the list of available wifi networks, select "connect to hidden wifi network", select mine and try to reconnect - without success. But I notice something... a never-seen-before network SSID with a wired network icon beside it ?!? This is in the list of wireless networks.

A couple minutes later, the mystery network SSID was gone and I could reconnect. I have my THEORIES on what just transpired, but I'd like some expert opinions please.

Thanks in advance y'all.

What network adapter are you using, and do you know the driver being used to share here? It might be a bug.

I have had a similar issue with Mint 17.2 and a reboot of Mint fixed it. I went out and bought a newer more modern USB wireless adapter and that fixed my issue. In my situation at boot Linux mounted the wireless internal to laptop. Then at some point it loses the connection and the adapter actually vanishes from hardware list with no ability to get it back while in that session. YET a reboot and everything works fine for a while and then the problem repeated. I bought one of those cheap USB wireless adapters that states it has Linux support and that fixed my issue. Laptop no longer drops out on me.

I used this specific model and it fixed my issue with the drop out and gone wireless crash situation:

Thanks for the thoughtful response Dave. I've also fought those fights with 17.2 but with 17.3 that is no longer an issue, thankfully.

There's all kinds of back-story with my wifi networks and my neighbors. But they were sponging off my wifi network. I tightened security as much as one can with non-enterprise routers, and that finally convinced them to call Comcrap to install cable Internet in their hovel.. So this issue I'm posting about is likely one of their script kiddie FRIENDS practicing packet injection, but I'm not too concerned. I really would love to get your opinion on this matter, however.

I'm rather curious about why the icon is the "wrong" one, per the screenshot.

I've always thought that my local machine has its own icon that is called by the OS when I go to view the list of available wifi networks. IOW, that icon is "fixed" and only the wifi network name would be a variable.

Ultimately, I know they got onto my wifi to some extent, I just wonder if they got into my machine. .. since they definitely changed the icon that should have been used in this situation.

Thanks in advance, Dave!

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]If you are using WPA2 security with a non-guessable key then it is extremely unlikely that anyone was on your network. WPA2 has not been broken in the same way WEP has been, the only known way to break in to a WPA2 network is through brute force. Even if they did somehow get on your network, I can't think of any way or reason for them to change the icon.

To me this sounds more like a random bug related to NetworkManager (which is also a bit buggy for me at times). My guess would be that since you are manually adding the connection due to the SSID being hidden it is saving it in the list of custom, user defined networks and for some reason the wrong icon is being used. This seems way more likely than some neighbour breaking into a secure network by guessing the SSID and key and then somehow getting into a PC on that network (which should also be basically impossible) to change the icon. Thanks for the response Cameron. Please view the screenshot I attached in previous post. That "wired" icon and the SSID were there, and then gone. No one made that graphic. It's the real deal.

While that was happening, I was disconnected from the wifi router. Within 3 minutes it was gone and I was back online. If you can link me to a launchpad bug post or two that specifically discuss this very type of "bug", I'd like to read up on it. Thanks.

I think Network Manager shows both available Wireless connections as well as any active wired connections.

PJ-673_0001 (numbers may vary) is the host name of the "Brother PocketJet 673" when on a network, and is also the SSID that it broadcasts when set to wireless mode.

Just to somewhat reproduce the issue, I used my Mint 17.3 laptop and connected my LaserJet Printer to it through both USB as well as Ethernet. When I was connected via Ethernet, I saw a wired network called "NPI3C40E7". More interesting, however, is while with Ethernet it showed at all times, when I connected it via USB, I only saw a wired network called "NPI3C40E7" when I was not connected to any wireless networks.

Thanks for your input Cameron. Yeah, this is a weird event. Be advised that it is rather easy to break into WPA/AES protocol via WPS. This was originally done with Reaver. After I read your post, I went online to find articles that I'd already read on how folks break into wifi in the modern day. Ancillary to that, I discovered that some routers leave WPS enabled even after the user has disabled it in the GUI. IOW, you don't know that the protocol is still enabled and you are open to attack.

That's one way WPA2 can be circumvented. When WPS is actually disabled, cracking is very difficult to do. Apparently.AndyCountry said:

Thanks for your reply BC! Especially discovering that it was a Brother mobile printer (or a spoofed one).

1. Network Manager: When I'm connect to the router via cable, the laptop's Network Manager shows all wifi APs in range, along with the laptop's sole wired connection, which is designated by Network Manager as "Wired connection 1". So no malfunction there.

2. The Brother printer (alien network): Network Manager showed it as a wired network connection, which it was not (any idea why?). For years, Network Manager has shown the SSID of my neighbor's wifi-connected HP Printer correctly.

3. I'm dumb, so please be patient. I'm confused about this statement: "More interesting, however, is while with Ethernet it showed at all times, when I connected it via USB, I only saw a wired network called "NPI3C40E7" when I was not connected to any wireless networks." ..

Yes, this is what I was describing. The Network manager shows connected wired connections as well as wireless connections.

Software works in a variety of different ways and there are a lot of different kinds of bugs that can crop up. Icons such as those displayed usually are indexed by type, that is, 0 is wireless, 1 is wired, etc. (or something similar). It is far more likely that some sort of incorrect logic in the software may have inadvertently used the incorrect icon. In my mind the most likely explanation is that the wired icon is index 0, the default index. And the network manager encountered an error while attempting to determine whether the printer's access point was secured. As a result, the wired network icon was used.

When I connected my Laptop running Linux Mint 17.3 to my Printer using an Ethernet cable, I was able to see the name of the printer ("NPI3C40E7") in the network foldout whether I was connected to a wireless network or not. When I connected via USB, it was only visible if I was not connected to my wireless network. I suspected perhaps you owned the device and had FORGOTTEN it's wireless capabilities.

Indeed Patio!

That was the genesis of my original post on this matter, so I thank you for confirming my suspicions. I'm just trying to understand, in general terms, the attack method(s) used. In that way, I might be able to make security changes that will hopefully make my networks more secure - as you suggest I should.

I'd be interested in your thoughts on how an alien printer/device can be injected onto my network, show up as a device connected by Ethernet cable to my router, which it wasn't - I was sitting in front of the router at the time this took place, then after a few minutes, simply disappear.

BC_Programmer deftly discovered that the alien device is, or is spoofing, a Brotther mobile printer. Some time ago, the computer I lent my stepfather had a motherboard failure. "Somethings wrong with the computer, I think it is Korean hackers"

I determined it was some failed CPU Power capacitors. When I relayed this discovery- "How did the Koreans cause that"?

He refuses to abandon his theory that it was caused by Korean Hackers. Any attempt to explain how the system failed MUST fall into a context involving Korean hackers, and if I don't introduce the element, he rolls my explanation into one involving them. It's a useless discussion. Last I checked his theory was that they were scammers and they purposely caused the capacitors to fail in order to sell me new ones. Totally worth it to get my .68 cents for 12 capacitors, I suppose.

I'll leave it to be interpreted exactly how I think this story is relevant here.Quote from: AndyCountry on May 27, 2016, 12:08:31 PM

A neighbour's wireless printer showing up means nothing to do with the security of your own network, the printer essentially acts as it's own access point and broadcasts it's own network.
What are you using to secure the network? WPA2? If so then you have nothing to worry about, WPA2 with a non-guessable key is, for all intents and purposes, secure.

From what I can see here, all that is happening is that a WiFi enabled printer is showing up with a different icon (possibly because it acts as a Ad-hoc network or WiFi Direct device which causes Mint to show a different icon for some reason). I completely doubt that there is anything malicious going on.

Solve : Ethernet stopped working suddenly and now computer won't turn on?

Recently my Ethernet suddenly STOPPED working. I had not installed or uninstalled anything. I changed Ethernet cables and which port it was plugged into in the computer to no avail. So I assumed it was a pc FAULT as all other devices, Ethernet or wifi were functioning properly. I decided to restore my pc to a time before the Ethernet had stopped. After trying to turn it back on, it gets stuck on the loading screen. Update: my computer has restored to an earlier date, however the Ethernet still does not work. You might want to GET a new Ethernet card. What does device manager report for ethernet?

If you need a new ethernet the easiest installation is a USB Ethernet Adapter for around $15 such as this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812125019&cm_re=usb_ethernet-_-12-125-019-_-ProductWill a usb Ethernet adapter work with a broken Ethernet card, and will it be just as fast?

Solve : Wi-Fi adapter not working?

Answer»

Hi guys
My adapter isn't working and showing no networks found.
I purchased a Wi-Fi adapter but after a few months it's show no networks found. Tried resetting LAPTOP, reinstalling drivers.
My laptop is HP pavillion11 x360 and my laptop Wi-Fi adapter is Ralink Rt3290 and my adapter is TP Link Tl-WN823N.
Thanks The TP-Link USB wireless adapter could have died. I have had hit-n-miss with that brand as to if a product will last or become a problem. USB Wireless NICs are cheap, I WOULD buy a new one and see what happens. BUT FIRST before you do that, you can also test the USB port to make sure USB port is working ok with another USB device in that port. I had a client once that had a issue with wifi not working and it was because the wireless adapter got bumped and broke the USB jack. I had good luck with EDIMAX USB Wireless NICs for range and signal strength. I bought 5 of these and no problems. They also are nice and small and not much of a snag problem. The original USB wireless devices use to look like a oversided FLASH drive and get bumped/snapped/broken off too easily. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833315091&cm_re=edmax_usb-_-33-315-091-_-Product

The style of wifi device that are prone to destroying USB jacks are this style when they get bumped the wrong way: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/linksys-wireless-n-dual-band-usb-adapter/6571616.p?skuId=6571616&ref=212&loc=1&ksid=2622f7fd-b378-428b-b142-2044457dec5c&ksprof_id=401&ksaffcode=pg112524&ksdevice=c&lsft=ref:212,loc:2

Solve : connect two networks?

Answer»

Hello
I am newbie in networking; so, I appreciate to guide me to solve this PROBLEM.
I face to two networks; each one use TP-Link TD-W8960N (Wireless/ADSL /Router Modem) separately connected to internet. And clients that connect to TD-W8960N are PCs, MAC and tablets. Every device has their own local IP address. Ok, now problem begin. I want to connect these two networks.
Is there any way to connect these two networks and create an Ethernet?

thanks
Why do you want to connect these 2 networks? To print on a friends printer or? Knowing exactly why you need to network these together we can assist better.

A VPN tunnel is best between 2 locations, but your going to run into issues if you want to truly bridge these 2 locations. Biggest problem with a bridge at 2 locations with the router modem at each end is that you will have DHCP running at both ends, and you only want a single DHCP or no DHCP at all. If you shut off DHCP and set to static IP's and made sure not to use the same IPs at both locations it could be done, but this is a really strange setup for home networking. A network with a bridge LIKE this would be more apt to be installed in some business networking with site to site communications. I even was involved in a ethernet bridge connection between a food store chain and a small convenience store that was part of teh same company in which we RENTED a copper pair as (burglar ALARM circuit) and created a private DSL bridge over Copperlink Modems between the 2 buildings that were 3 miles apart. Thanks for your replay
As I mentioned, there are many devices connected to these two networks and I want to create a share folder that all devices can access to it. I can create share folder for Linux and Windows but not working for MAC. Share folder for Windows and MAC but not working in Linux. Thinking about share folder for Tablets and Other devices make this problem bigger.
I THINK local FTP is the best for this situation.
I appreciate to any recommend and guide about bridging these two networks and also recommend for sharing folder.
Thank you
Easiest Solution would be cloud storage such as a Google Drive. All devices anywhere could access it and use it as a shared location. As well as you wouldnt be opening up both locations to security vulnerabilities.

Solve : Network Auditing - Notice and/or logging of network traffic?

Answer»

Was wondering if there was a better tool out there for monitoring what is sending data?

While gadgets for Windows 7, you should really have them turned off due to a potential security exploit if you have a dirty gadget, I STILL run my Network and CPU/RAM monitoring gadgets on my Windows 7 systems because I know they are clean and like to keep a eye on resources and communication to and from my SYSTEM.

I saw a trickle of an upload going on the network meter that caught my attention, and so i ran Wireshark to see what was going on. Their was more data being uploaded than downloaded which is what caught my attention but it wasnt a full out upload using all bandwidth it was just a trickle that was unusual.

Wireshark informed me that the trickle was coming from my Google Drive with TRAFFIC on port 443. I havent made any CHANGES to my data on my Google Drive cloud storage in about a month. I assume its just testing the data between the pairing of the Cloud and the Google Drive Folder.

This got me thinking that maybe there are tools or utilities out there that might be able to flag when data is being uploaded or downloaded that is UNEXPECTED. In the past I have had free games that turn my system into a torrent seed and I have had to kill those off. Pando Media Booster was a problem of the past using up my bandwidth of my internet to seed for others to download the game and updates etc. I had to break the seed feature to stop this. This too I detected with the Network Meter gadget.

With wireshark its pretty much set to monitor and log the network. Then stop it and scroll through and write down IP addresses and then google search to figure out what is what. To me this seems like a very manual process and maybe there is a better tool or utility already out there that will log or notify and display what the IP address pairs up with without having to go through the manual process.

I have used WinPatrol in the past for programs that try to make changes etc, but there is nothing that I know of that will pop up and say "Heads Up... this program is uploading data".

Downloads I am not as concerned about, but upload traffic that is unusual I like to know if I have a data leak going on etc or am being used as a seed for a torrent etc.

For the fact that it was just Google Drive I am not that worried, but this recent oddity got me thinking and questioning if maybe there is a better way. If it wasnt for this Gadget that I shouldnt be using due to vulnerability according to Microsoft, I wouldnt have known that I had this upload trickle going on.
