Solve : Is it easy to make a Windows Hotspot for my mobile gadgets??

Answer»

This could also be under Windows, but I understand it is not REALLY a Windows . Not sure about that. Anyway, here goes.
A hot spot is a local Wi-Fi ACCESS Point coming from a device that would otherwise be a Wi-Fi CLIENT. You MIGHT want this when no Wi-Fi is available.

Making a hop-spot with my iPhone 4 is very easy. The same
is true for most Android phones that have both Wi-Fi and 3/4G data.

But what about doing it in Windows? I found that the software included with some Wi-Fi USB adapters has the software lacking in Windows. That works.
Wait. somebody says it has always been in Windows. What?

So I Google and see a video that says I can do it in Windo0ws 10. Maybe it is easy. but I can not understand the video. After a bit my attention spans burns out. I don't get it.
So is it really easy using just the built-in Window software?

If I could learn to do this, it would free up some of the hardware clutter in my man-cave. Maybe.
Do you know how?

It is definitely possible with internet connection sharing but the performance is nowhere as good as using a dedicated access point.Thank you, But how do I do it?
Don't tell me to go to Hawaii.

In some cases performance is not the concern. Example, I want to check my e0mail with a device that needs a Wi-Fi and in we are in an office that has only wired Internet. Is there a quick way to get the desktop PC to send out a Wi-Fi feed?

You can download software such as "VIRTUAL Router" that will do it for you but you can also set things up from the command prompt. http://www.ampercent.com/turn-windows-10-pc-into-a-wi-fi-hotspot/15499/I would like to do it without any third party software.T
hanks. I am trying that now. I keep getting something wrong.
I am not getting the WLAN command right.
Well, I see I am going to have to do some reading if I want to do this in the command prompt.

Solve : IPv4 address - Why is it being asked??

Answer»

A little background. We have a LAN/Wifi which caters to almost 800 residents within a campus. Previously, a MAC binding exercise was done where everyone had to provide their MAC addresses. A local login (using admin given user id and password on an http client portal) was possible only after the MAC address was registered, which would then make internet ACCESS possible through the LAN/Wifi.

Recently, the NETWORK administrator for the LAN provider asked for the IPv4 address too, while citing a RESET exercise for the MAC binding process.

What are the USUAL reasons for requesting this additional information (IPv4 address)? (Since they already had our MAC addresses)

Can someone please let me know? Are there any specific network activity tracking intentions, what could be the additional security threats, etc..Once a specified IP address and a device's MAC address are BOUND, the IP address will be reserved for the device and the device will get that IP address every time it connects to the router. This not only make it easier for the Administrator to manage critical devices, but also is a method to manage the LAN clients. If we enable Bind IP to MAC in strict mode, the devices listed in the IP Bind List will get the reserved IP address, and only the device listed in the IP Bind List are allowed to access the Internet. Other devices in the ARP table but not listed in IP Bind List will be blocked by the router and cannot access the Internet.Thank you for the explanation. Maybe I should have corrected all the bad English before I pasted it...

Solve : Protocol support issue with AsusRT-AC66U?

Answer»

Hi guys, we USED to have business-grade cisco switch, but it got burned last week so we had to replace it FAST, we had CONSUMER quality asus regular router - RT-AC66U,our IP Encoder outputs MPTS via RTP or UDP multicast - we tried it with udp - works fine, but it's a temporary solution, we need to have RTP stream, I tried to forward ports - no luck! What could be a PROBLEM with RT-AC66U, does it support rtp at all? Thank you!

Why not just get a used Cisco switch equivalent to the one you had?

Google for:used Cisco switches
.. and get lots of dealers.
About half the price and some with 1 year warranty.
Thanks for the feedback Geek-9pm

Solve : High ping spikes, strong signal up/down, little to no packetloss.?

Answer»

To start off, I'm not great with this stuff but if you tell me what to do and can give me a fair description of what I'm LOOKING for I can get whatever information is needed.

Problem: For the last month and a half to two months I have been experiencing high ping in-game at around 5-10 second intervals. First noticed in CS:GO, lagging into/around corners, people momentarily appearing out of thin air, etc for a very brief moment before having 5-10 seconds of normal play. Tested in non-steam games (Diablo 3, LoL, browser based games, etc), all have the same issue. Specifically in-game in CS:GO, my ping previously hovered around 35-50ms, and now hangs around the high 80s-90s and when a spike happens, can reach 150ms.

Pinging 8.8.8.8 for 5 minutes....

Ping statistics for 8.8.8.8:
Packets: Sent = 283, Received = 283, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 19ms, Maximum = 983ms, Average = 73ms
Control-C

Checking with various speedtest websites, namely Ookla, my ping says 28ms, down is around 60Mbps, and up is around 10Mbps. Services such as Youtube and Netflix do not appear to be affected by this (no hiccups while streaming HD, no quality degradation).

My ISP is Cox, and after a month of talking with them we have replaced; ethernet cord from gateway to PC, the gateway itself, the coax from gateway to wall, the wall plate, the pieces in the wall, the cable outside, the "tap line", and installed a filter on another RESIDENT's line that was back-feeding. Essentially, aside from replacing the entire box outside and the hardlines from here to wherever the lines typically go 'everything' has been replaced to no avail. At that point, it was suggested that my network adapter had failed. I was already planning a new build so I went ahead and replaced the motherboard (and tower) because, why not? Couldn't hurt, was going to do it eventually anyway. That still did not fix the issue.

The only other connection I have is at my parents house 30minutes away, so I relocated my setup there temporarily to test the connection there and it works perfectly.

I don't know the previous gateway, it was some type of netgear, but the current gateway is a Cisco DPC3825 DOCSIS 3.0 Gateway.

Computer Build;

CPU; Intel Core i5-4570 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
Old Mobo; Gigabyte GA-H87-D3H ATX LGA1150 Mobo
New Mobo; MSI Z97-GAMING 5 ATX LGA1150 Mobo
RAM; Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3-1600

Old Case; NZXT Source 210 Elite ATX Mid (Not sure if this matters but just in case! No pun intended)
New Case; NZXT Phantom ATX Full
Power; EVGA SuperNOVA 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
Optical; Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer

Operating System was originally a registered copy of Windows 7 before the Windows 10 upgrades came out last year, and it's now on a registered Windows 10 copy.

Any help is appreciated, neither I or Cox can figure out what is going on. Let me know what other info you guys need.

With nothing else ACTIVE on your home network Smart TV, portable devices, other computers, etc, and no one squatting/stealing internet on your wifi to consume bandwidth?

Then it sounds like a BATTLE between Customer and ISP. I'd have them perform a loopback test and test for latency and dB strength of signal. Additionally have them make a house call and show the technician that arrives the problem.

I had a similar problem years ago and after 5 service calls a tech came from Adelphia ( now comcast ) and replaced the cable between my home and the pole. the cable was 20 years old and not quite rated for broadband. This fixed my issue. I also had times where the sun would heat up the cable and I would lose internet and it would cool and internet would come back but my pings were all over the place from 83ms to 2000ms to lost pings etc. It was fixed for me with new wire to home installed by my ISP.You said:

Solve : HELP I CAN"T CONNECT?

Answer»

HELP!!!!!!! I have an ISSUE with an XP computer. It is on routed and switched network. I can see this computer and pull files from it from other pc's. It however will not see any other computers, connect to the internet or ping out past it's own IP. What is WRONG?Its the fact that the security protocol of the newer systems, XP doesnt PLAY well with for pass thru authentication. Easiest thing is to create a folder share on the XP system and use this for sending and receiving files between systems.

Other option is sort of DANGEROUS and that is to set the folder permissions so that Everyone has access to it on the newest computer such as Windows 7 computer. This is safe as long as your router keeps out people from the outside, but anyone connecting to your home network would have access to this share location since its for everyone.

I generally create a mapped drive to a shared folder on a system that I want to share files with. This way for example if I have a XP and a Windows 7 system, the share is created on the XP system and on the Windows 7 system I have Drive Letter X: for the XP system. I can then drag and drop or copy/paste files to the X: drive and they are then transferred over the network to the XP systems shared folder that the Windows 7 system is mapped to.Thanks for the reply. The real problem lies in that this system is our main sign shop system and is connected to a sign printer. It can't even see the sign printer. It also will not connect to the internet. This just started about a week ago.

Solve : Smartphone No Phone or Data Services?

Answer»

If you have no contract for any services on a smartphone you can still use someone's else's WIFI for free is this CORRECT?If you have the password.
I have a TracPhone type of smart phone and I regularly have my data plan ( only 180mb per $20 card ) SHUT off. I use wifi from free sources to use it, and only turn on the 3G service that uses my 180mb data plan when I am away from a free wifi source and the internet access is important. So I dont stream anything over 3G, I just use it for IM'ing friends or quick browser look ups or GPS etc, then flip the 3G off. However on free wireless of an open wifi or one that someone gives you access to the data is free.My old Android smartphone (ZTE Blade 3) doesn't even have a SIM in it any more, and I can use it on wifi in hotels, CAFES, pubs, trains, buses etc as well as the router at home or at friends houses. I got an app onto it called IP Webcam and it can be a wireless webcam on my home LAN using the back facing camera, although that runs the battery down fairly quickly.

Sit in the car at McDonald's get it free.

Solve : I'm at a loss with a network. 15 computers and 10 IP phone. One room with 2 comp?

Answer»

I'm at a loss with a network. 15 computers and 10 IP phone. ONE room with 2 computers and 2 IP phone is fed by one Cat5 cable with a switch going to all 4 devices. Here's the problem. Both computers have the internet going in and out. The network is fine. I can remote desktop into both with no problem. They can share files and print. Just no internet. All other systems on the network work fine with no problems. Please review your post.
I think what you mean is that two computer son the local network lack Internet.
Is that what you mean?
When did this happen?
What router do you have? Is it suitable for commercial use?
Some home and small office units will not allow more that a dozen connections.

Also, does the service provider put a quota on the number of device son the Internet?

What operating system is used?

What if you connect another computer to the switch where you are having the issue? What if you connect one of the computers that have the problem ELSEWHERE in the building? What if you bypass the switch in the room and connect a computer directly to the incoming cable? On the machines that aren't working, is the gateway address set correctly (should be your router's IP) and can you ping this IP from the faulty machines?

It would also help if you described how the rest of the network is configured including what hardware (in particular models of switches, routers.etc) is being used. It's on a CISCO SG200-26P Gigabit Ethernet Smart Switch from a CENTURYLINK Technicolor C2000T Modem (40Mbps down - 15Mbps up) - All computers are running Windows 7 Pro - Cisco SG200-08P 8-Port Gigabit POE Smart Switch splitting the 1 cat5 to the two phone and computers - According to CenturyLink they do not care how many devices are on the system (It's a business account, not a home account)

Will be trying to connect another computer to the switch in the morning and see what that does.Given that both of these are smart switches, are you using any of the "smart" functionality? I'd be inclined to go into each switch and check the configuration to ensure that there isn't any SORT of strange setup with VLANS that could be causing this issue. If you definitely aren't using any smart functionality and want them to just work as simple switches it may be worth resetting them both.

Not through LAN/ethernet cable, using a USB wireless adapter works, though. Still I'd want to use the ethernet cable.

Yes, laptops and phones work fine with the wireless. My gut feeling is that it is not Windows 10. But I can be wrong.
OK. Replacing the Network Interface Card (NIC) is not an option. - Right?
You can get Ethernet to USB adapter for a very low price and it will work up to the full speed of Ethernet.
I see Walmart offers such a thing.

Prices are from $12 to $30 for generic brands. These claim to be full speed devices and get power from the USB port.

Erm, I could, but will that really help, if so, how? Sorry, I'm skeptical due to past events. I am not trying to sell you something you don't need.
The USB to Ethernet adapter is a cheap way to have on hand a diagnostic tool.
It is independent of some of the things that can go sarong.
Somethings it can do:
• It can verify simple mechanical failure of the jack.
• It can workaround driver issues of the NIC
• It can confirm the integrity of the Ethernet cable.
• It can be used with other PCs to confirm the router is good.
Hop that is of some help.

I found the root cause, and it's very silly!
What happened was that the LAN/Ethernet cable was connected to the modem, not the router.

When called the ISP customer service:
1st Representative (8th June): Asked to connect the phone line to the TEL1 port, disregarding the DSL port
2nd Representative (8th June): Asked to connect the LAN/Ethernet cable from modem to computer*
3rd Representative (today, 10th June): Said connecting to modem is incorrect, should be connected to the router -> connect to router -> issue resolved

*Point after when I STARTED this thread

Thanks for the help and for being patient Geek-9pm, this thread can be closed.
OK.
It goes to show that one out of three service repress can be correct.
That is amazing good news!

Solve : Wifi extenders?

Answer»

How are these devices WORKING and is there point of installing them? CheersExtenders work by handshaking with another wireless DEVICE through a secured connection USUALLY. Then broadcasts to extend the wireless service further. This adds a small amount of latency in all extenders I have seen.

Its BEST to run a wired connection to where ever the weak signal is when possible and add an additional Access Point to minimize latency.

Solve : ATT u-verse modem?

Answer»

I have an ATT u-verse modem that is also wireless. I need to replace it. ATT wants to charge me every month for there modem. Can I buy a modem to replace it or does it have to be an ATT modem?Noway has answered yet.
I have, in time past, been able to USE another brand of DSL router with my AT&T service. But you need e to have a frank talk with them and tell them you do not want to rent the modem. They should offer the option to just outright buy it from them. Expect to pay $100 for a unit that elsewhere would be $75.

Bear in mind that other brands of routers may be hard for them to support. What is the model of the one you have? Is it made by a company CALLED 'Two Wire' ?

They told me I couldn't purchase it. It is made by Motorola OK. You will have to buy one of the other brands they use.
Here is a place where AT&T sells stuff.
https://www.att.com/equipment/accessories/dsl-equipment.jsp
Is this a DSL service?
If not, look at this: https://forums.att.com/t5/Residential-Wi-Fi-Gateway/List-of-U-verse-approved-3rd-party-modems/td-p/3731397

Here is a model that is often used for DSL. (attachment.)

To add to this... I ditched my modem rental years ago and bought my own modem for $58. Be prepared to give them the MAC Address for this modem that you buy. The MAC Address is how they identify this modem to being licensed for use with your account. Once they add this MAC address to their system, you will need to turn the modem on in which you may need to loginto it to configure it. For myself I didnt require any configuration as for once my motorola was connected to the ISP when booting they had me on the phone and they had access to flashing it. The modem then did a RESET and when it came back up it was ready to go. Hope this info helps. The MAC address is usually on a sticker on the modem. And something like 01:e4:fe:98:4a:c0 or 01e4fe984ac0 in which your 12 hex digit mac address will be different than this mac address example, but should be on it for easy identification, although usually in very small print. *Additionally to get my modem set up I had to talk to 3 people, 2 of them said it wasnt an option and that i had to continue top pay on the rental modem. The 3rd person I chatted with processed my request and I just had to return the rented modem to my ISP. My ISP is Comcast and not AT&T. They could play stubborn, but hopefully your able to find someone that allows it.I called them again. Since I was upgrading my internet speed I had to get a new modem. They told me I couldn't install it. It had to be done by their technician. AT&T has a forum and others have there POSTED what you also have heard.

want to buy my modem -- told I can only lease in my area
Quote

I prefer not to depend on used equipment, so today I called 800-288-2020 to try and buy a new modem and was told that my modem was in fact leased with a monthly leasing charge. I was told AT&T would not sell me a new modem "because they only lease in my area." They did say they would send me a new leased modem (presumably without scratches) which I could SELF-install and then return my old one.

Solve : how to assign different ip addresses to mobile devices in domain?

Answer»

hi
I have a domain which include computers and VOIP telephones and Laptops and cellphones, now what I wanna do is to assign different ip addresses to cellphones and laptops and pretty much every devices that CONNECT to my domain through wi-fi. how can i do it? is there a way to do it through DHCP? could active directory say the difference between the pcs and wireless devices? In the past I have USED reservations.... you gather mac addresses of the devices and then specify what IP you want each device to get. You do this in DHCP. This way workstations would be on x.x.x.10 through x.x.x.200 and printers and other wireless devices would be on x.x.x.201 thru 240 and, network hardware that needed static IP addresses would be on 241 thru 254 as well as 1 thru 9 for routers etc.

This is a pretty complex thing to set up - You can't just automatically figure out what a device is and assign an IP accordingly (at least in a way that would work reliably.

It would help if you detailed how the network is structured entirely. I can't speak from the perspective of Windows Server/Active Directory as I don't use Windows Servers myself however I've done this before with UNIX-based networks. What sort of router do you have as this is a pretty advanced thing you are trying to do and will require a pretty high end router? It would also help if you explained why you want to set this up, e.g. for security to keep wireless devices separate from wired PCs and VoIP phones.

So you want the devices connecting over WiFi to be kept separate on a different SUBNET from those on a wired connection? For this you would want to have the access point and network switch connected to the router on separate interfaces - If the router only has one interface to the LAN you would NEED to look into using VLANs which would also require you to get a VLAN capable switch. You would then need to configure your switch such that the access point's port is on a separate VLAN from the wired PCs. You would then need to configure your router's DHCP server to assign different subnets on each interface and configure the firewall APPROPRIATELY to allow/block traffic between the wireless and wired devices.

If you want to keep different types of wireless devices separate from each other as well, e.g. so cell phones and laptops are on different subnets, you would then need an access point that is capable of supporting VLANs. You would then set this up to broadcast multiple SSIDs (e.g. one for cellphones, one for laptops) where each of these is on it's own VLAN. You would then configure the router accordingly.

Solve : 4 IPV6 addresses??

Answer»

Hello hope someone can answer my question and I thank you in advance. I'm on windows 7 64bit and when I check my ipconfig I notice I have 4 different IPv6 addresses. Two of the addresses just say IPv6 while another shows temporary IPv6 address and the other shows link local IPv6 address. I'm just curious if this is normal or not. I also notice it on my iPhone which shows 3 ipv6 addresses along with one fe address. I use Comcast by the way. I also have a phone line if that makes a difference. Here is my computer as a reference for a single network adapter. There are 3 IPv6 entries but they are different. 2 are DHCP and other is local IP. If you copy paste your info here like I did we can see what you have going on vs guesswork. Additionally each Network Adapter that is active could show IPv6 and IPV4 info. Usually its only the ones that are connected to a network or set up static. Dynamic configured NICs with no network connection usually show no info since no DHCP LEASE was established.

Well, it has been marked 'solved'........so no harm there!Well is the router issue resolved for now or does it still persist.................As a user of the home router, you have to enter the username and password of the administrator for completing the login process. A browser may fail to respond immediately sometimes with a few errors such as this webpage is not available. If you get such error messages, then you have to connect the router to the network and fix the technical glitch properly.

Leading home Internet providers these days provide a wide range of networking equipment like routers with the facility to support administrators accessing them through the friendly name in their web browser. Solve : dBm question?

Answer»

I have this horrible internet called Hughesnet that's satellite internet and I asked somebody for their Cox/Cable Login information and curious if -50/-51 dBm is an acceptable connection for a HOTSPOT that's 500 yards away.

Note: I have the 7 dBi Alfa branded panel with AWUS036H.

If you dont have packet loss and its working, I would SAY its good. Is that 88% signal strength in the pic you shared? The signal is AROUND 88% to 92% with 12 to 15 ping with no packet loss during a 10 minute test.

I tried it online with Smite, Paladins and Tera with each game around 70-100 ping compared to Hughesnet with 500 - 1200 ping.Looks like you found a better internet connection then.

70-100ms isnt bad. For online gaming it seems like mainly just the first person shooters are latency critical due to headshots etc. With those games and PvP you should be ok.

Solve : DHCP server not assigning IPs?

Answer»

About every day or 2, the DHCP server on my TP-link C3200 would stop issuing IP addresses. The router did not log any connection requests during the TIME when I couldn't connect to the router. Restarting the router fixes it but I run a few servers on my desktop and I can't have it needing to go offline every day or 2.
The last issued IP was 192.168.1.114, everything below was taken, lease time was set for 1 day and there were 86 open IPs available on the DHCP server.
(Note: Everything else STILL works, the devices that are connected stay connected until the lease expires, they just can't reconnect and new devices can't connect until I restart the router). Is there a flash update available for that router that might fix this?

Additionally, my EXPERIENCE with that brand hasnt been good. I have a TP-Link router that has a bridge mode that doesnt like to keep working with my D-Link router. Signal strengths are really good point to point for the bridge but i get packet loss. I moved to a different channel even and still same issue. I bought a Netgear Wireless Bridge and the problem was solved.

I'd say that if there is no firmware flash available for it, you should CHECK into getting a new router.

In the meantime I would set the servers and any critical systems to static IP's in say the scope of .200 to .254, SHORTEN your DHCP pool to .2 thru .199 and this way systems that are critical will keep working until this router can be swapped out as for there is no lease to expire with static IPs.

Solve : How can I Stop Pop Ups While Watching Video On-line?

Answer»

White lam watching a video on-line, like Netflix or AMC, I get a pop up from Fire Fox a new version is available. How can I tell it not to BOTHER me when I an watching a video? On for that matter, how can I tell it not to block my viewing area? It is really annoying.
Any suggestions welcome. Why not update browser to latest if thats what it is for firefox? Also as FAR as blocking viewing area I see that all the time at youtube in windowed play mode but it seems to go away with full screen. I also use adblock plus that removes ad videos.

Could try Adblock plus
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-gb/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/

Update Firefox.I like fire fox. But I like to watch videos in Windows XP. Using Winmdows 7 or Windows 10 gives POOR rendering. I don't know why. So I just booty up Windows XP when I want to watch a video.

Now in Windows XP Fire Fox already gives me problems. I have version 45.01 mad it wants me to go to 47. I fear it will destroy another part of my system. Repairing Windows XP on this computer is a real chore, so I would rather not take the risk.

(There are a number of articles about Firefox print problems.)

Presently, I can not print while Firefox is active. Rather than spend
hours troubleshooting the issue, I just close Firefox when I need to print something. Or print from Windows 7.

Will Ad block stop the Fire Fox pop ups?
Is there not some way I can tell Firefox I do not want to update for 30 days?

You can go in to tools options and then go in to "Advanced" and click on "Never check for updates (not recommended: security risk)".

There is no way to tell it how many days but if you just remember to check for an update at the end of each month it won't pop up telling you about updates.

Adblock plus is just for when you are using the browser and to cut out other ads from websites. The update notification is coming from the browser itself.Quote

Solve : Gigabit Switch Question with 100mbps systems connected to it?

Answer»

Just got a great deal on 2 qty Netgear 8-port 1000mbps ( gigabit ) switches at 50% off at Newegg. I installed one of them last night in place of a 100MBPS switch.

Question I have is, if I have 2 computers performing a file transfer at 100mbps to each other through this switch, and another (3rd) computer on this same switch at 100mbps is connected to it, is 90% of the bandwidth 900mbps still available with 100mbps between the 2 systems in use or does this switch drop to 100mbps with all devices connected to it 100 and no 1000mbps devices connected.

I am hoping that this gigabit switch will be the fact that 90% is still available to that there is no network congestion for a lone computer that wants to get through this 1000mbps switch outbound to internet. I havent done any bandwidth testing yet, but figured I'd check here vs going through all that since this should be a quick thing to have answered.

Here is the actual switch i bought 2 of in case there is some feature that is required to have it operate to having 90% of bandwidth still available with 2 devices at 100mbps doing a file transfer. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122609&cm_re=netgear_8-port_switch-_-33-122-609-_-Product

I held off doing the upgrade to gigabit for years THINKING there isnt much to gain since internet broadband is 25/5 and all systems are 100mbps, but teh deal to get 2 of these for the price of one, i couldnt resist the cheap network upgrade. But then i got thinking I wonder if it means now with 2 systems in a file transfer of 100mbps, if 900mbps bandwidth is still available or because all devices are 100mbps thru this switch if the switch will only sync at 100 and run at 100 with no bandwidth advantage because no devices are utilizing the 1000mbps.

In the past, transferring large files over 100mbps congested the network as this is a main traffic point between 7 devices on 100mbps connections. I am hoping this gigabit switch rated for 1000 will have 900mbps bandwidth PROCESSING TIME available etc to act as if there is no slow down to the 3rd computer with 2 other computers all out file transferring. The 100mbps switch a Trendnet brand one I had prior would bottleneck all bandwidth with 2 systems transferring data at 100mbps and web pages would load slow on the 3rd computer trying to have its data competing with the 2 other systems that are all out transferring packets.

This is the switch I had prior that congests when 2 systems are in a file transfer so all others struggle with bandwidth out to the web etc. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833156266&cm_re=Trendnet_8_port-_-33-156-266-_-ProductSwitches don't reserve capacity so it doesn't make a difference in the speed of devices that are connected. In your situation with a pair of gigabit devices, CONNECTING a 100mbit device will make no difference to the speed at which the gigabit devices can communicate - I've even had 10baseT devices hooked up to my gigabit network with no adverse effects.

A decent switch should have the capacity to allow a full duplex transfer between every pair of devices to happen at the same time at the same speed. For example, my 24port Gigabit switch (HP Procurve 1800-24g) has a switching capacity of 48gbps. This means that I could connect 24 devices and have each pair of devices make a full duplex transfer between themselves at 1gbps both ways.

The congestion point won't be the switch itself, it'll be the link between the switch and whatever upstream device it is connected to. That said, the capacity isn't divided based on the number of and speed of devices connected to the switch, it's just done automatically based on how much data is being transferred down each link - If two gigabit devices try to pull data from the same third device, each of them will get around 500mbit bandwidth.Cool... Thanks for clarifying this camerongray

Solve : LAN network is not working?

My LAN network is not working.

After a day work when I close my computer for the day and start the computer it has no internet access in the tray icon. Thanks.Does the Wi-Fi work?

Did you try the troubleshooter in Windows 7?

YES Wi-Fi work after disable/ enable LAN and Wi-Fi I do not know which one actually help. The most common failure in Ethernet is a broken or loose connector.

The l thing that holds it it snaps off.
But it might be something else. Thanks again for your prompt reply. In the task manager it show Local area connection and WIRELESS network connection both connected. Further help will be much appreciate.

Solve : Connected, No network Access?

Answer»

I have tried ipconfig /release, renew, and flushdns. Winsock and netsh as well. DHCP is connected. IPV4 settings are set to automatic. The external network adapter works. I am able to connect to another wifi, but not the one I want. It says connected, no network access. When I use the troubleshooter, it says the wifi doesn't have a valid wifi configuration. I am not about to change anything on any kind of router/modem as the wifi is provided through a third party.

This is the message I get when I try to do ipconfig /release and renew:
"No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection *2 while it has its media disconnected"

I don't know what that is really, but the Wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi which is right below it is what I'm using. When I switch wifis, the IPV4 seems to be correct on the one I can use, 192.168... On the one not working for me, it says 169.254.... That is labeled next to autoconfig IPV4 address while the one working is just IPV4. The default gateway is also blank on the messed up one while the good one has 192.168... as well as having "DHCP Server" I went to check on the IPV4 and the bad one is autoconfig with no settings, while the good one has the 192.168... and whatnot.

I use a external wifi adapter. It is awake and I have done any troubleshooting on it that I could think of. I do not use VPNs or proxies. I disabled the firewall with a command and restarted. Still nothing. I have done a network reset via the built in option in win10, did not work. I tried safe mode with networking, but all that happened was a BLACK screen with the asus logo.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.Connected to other wireless networks WITHOUT a problem. Connecting to a 3rd party network and you have issues. The issue is with the 3rd party network. It does not, I have already paid for this period and I have no restrictions on how long I can use it. It gives me that generic error message to check firewall, router, etc..Can you share error message here. Copy PASTE or screenshot of it. Additionally, have you contacted the provider for this paid for service to see if they are any help as for they might be able to tell you faster than we can as to what the generic message means?I have contacted the service provider and they have said that there is an "issue" at my location and are trying to resolve it. HOPEFULLY that was the problem, seeing as I downloaded the latest fix from Microsoft,( the 1607 one ) and it did nothing. I will update this with any new information, thank you.

No.Time settings typically don't affect internet connectivity, however if it is significantly off, certificates can show as expired or not yet valid, causing browser warnings.

Solve : Wireless issues?

Answer»

Hello

I am having a problem with logging on to the Internet wirelessly using my MCI U130 Notebook because I suspect that the FN key I use normally (FN + F11) is no longer working (though the Notebook is almost never used). For the same reason, I imagine, the WEB cam is not activated (FN + F6).

However, the green WLAN light is on on my router and I can connected using an Ethernet cable.

At some point, I am hoping to bypass the FN key and use a command line in Command Prompt, but for now I am a bit concerned as to why my network adapters take an age to search for updates. In fact, after about 20 minutes for each of the three adapters, I give up. My Device Manager looks like this (attached).

I have uninstalled each of the three adapters and, on restarting, Windows 7 has put them back but, again, it looks forever for driver updates. I can download other SOFTWARE, though - I have just downloaded the Microsoft Repair Tool, for example.

How would I check the integrity of the two wireless adapters I can see in Device Manager, please?

1. Have you checked the BIOS to make sure the WiFi is enabled there?
2. When you type IPConfig /all does it show the WiFi having any information?
3. Cleaned the crumbs and dust out of the keyboard?

I would not know how to check the BIOS but it has worked wirelessly before.

Anyway, about 30 mins AGO I realised that in Network Connections there is a difference between Not Connected and Disabled. When you press Fn + F11 that wireless connection icon in Network Connections should then change to Connected and show your Network. I just right-clicked, selected Connect/Disconnect in the menu that popped up, typed in my network key which it asked for, and I was then connected.

After all these months!

I have restarted a couple of times and it automatically shows connected in wireless, and I removed the Ethernet cable, so as not to confuse the poor thing, and it's fine.

Thanks for your help.

High1No problem GLAD you got it sorted.

Solve : how to vpn??

Answer»

i was wondering how would i vpn from android tablet(straight talk service) to my home router? i want to view ip camera outside of network.my router is archer c5I dont know of a secured direct VPN connection method between tablet and the ip camera. IP Camera alone with router config would only give you port forwarding which is not secure. Maybe this Archer C5 is ok alone without a computer for authentication of the VPN if it has a secure VPN feature that doesnt require a computer at the other end to handle the VPN authentication, but I would suggest a computer in the home used for VPN tunnel to the tablet and ip camera access through this computer, and the computer in the home deals with the insecure IP Camera data so the IP Camera is not able to be port probed and found by a hacker as for the port forward only method would show it as able to be communicated with by a hacker. All IP Camera's I know of have no authentication protocol and its a matter of just having the correct driver/software to interface with the camera and IP to connect to and your on. Do you have a computer at home you can leave running that you can VPN tunnel to from your tablet and access it this way instead?

Here are directions for VPN from your Router manufacturer TP-LINK off of google for the Archer C5
http://www.tp-link.com/resources/document/VPN_Config_Guide.pdf

Only WEBCAM stuff I have dealt with was while away on a business trip for 3 weeks and I wanted to be able to watch and check on some PETS of mine that were confined to a 40 gallon tank. I connected a USB webcam to my computer and had it pointed at the tank and then created a port forward for RDP in my router, but changed the port to be something other than 3389 so that a hacker port probing wouldnt be able to say ... " Oh port 3389 thats the default RDP port" and then hit it with intent to try to crack RDP. It worked for the 3 weeks I was away and system didnt get hacked and I was able to check on my pets and call home and suggest cleaning or feeding them etc. A VPN connection is far more secure than just a open port for forwarding and relying on the security of the COMPUTERS firewall and authentication protocol. But I didnt set up a VPN for this.

One friend at work pays for a service to have his webcams in his home able to be accessed from anywhere. He logs into an app and is able to select which camera and look and see live streaming from his IP cameras, but this comes at a monthly cost which i think he said he was paying $30 a month for this. He has this because he has to work and leave his 90 year old mother at home and he worries about her and so he can check on her and call 911 if he ever had to remotely. IM thinking his cameras connect to a computer in his home and then there is a service running on that computer that connects securely to the service he is paying for in which its all encrypted connection etc.

Sorry i cant give you a step by step on this, but hopefully a nudge in the right direction with this with the manual to the router maybe as well as suggestion to VPN between tablet and a home computer vs direct to IP Camera for extra security, as well as I am unsure if you can connect direct VPN tunnel to the IP Camera like you stated or not. If the router itself has an authentication protocol in the VPN setup to authenticate the VPN Tunnel then you can do this without a computer in the home, but if the router has basic VPN configuration settings then you might need a computer to handle the authentication of the VPN Tunnel.

Solve : Packet Loss - Please help me?

Answer»

Hello everyone!
I work online for a company in Taipei hosted by Chief Telecom. Lately, I've been experiencing packet loss between my connection and 2 of their servers (152.101.38.101 - Hong Kong, Quarry Bay) and 203.85.37.35 (Singapore). When I try to do a tracert, for example to the server from Singapore. I get these results:

In terms of Internet Speed, I use an ethernet cable, have fiber optic, modem's firmware is fully updated and my internet speed when testing to Taipei, Chief Telecom is - 329ms, 6.45 download speed, 4.42 upload speed (their requirements are 800kb d/s and 400kb u/s)

What do I do? Can anyone help me??
I've CONTACTED my ISP but they are playing the quickly dismiss game.
Please help!
A 2 % lose is not extreme, but it is higher than it should be. Your lose should be more LIKE about 0.05 % or one prone part in two thousand. You can check with other servers and find what is typical in your area.
A number of providers do not consider packet loss to be a matter of concern. This kind of thinking is potentially harmful. But it is hard to convince others that it matters.
Thank you very much for your reply Geek 9-pm.

Do you have any suggestions on how I can find the typical server for my area?
Seeing that this company's ITs always ping for 5 different servers, 2 from Taiwan, 1 from South Africa, 1 from Hong Kong and 1 from Singapore when testing the connection. What should I do to solve this packet loss?

Please excuse me if the answer is quite obvious, I barely know anything about these topics ^^

Thanks again

Solve : Port forwarding 4g Modem (ZTE MF823D)??

Answer»

Hi,

So, Here are the facts:

1- I like to play online games (PC-only): GTA V and Battlefield 4 to name a couple.

2- I live in Sweden, and subscribed to a decent carrier with a decent 4G speed.

3- I am using an unlocked ZTE MF823D 4G LTE modem connected to my PC that I bought off eBay.

Problem:

1-GTA V keep displaying the error "NAT restricted connection" and sometimes just disconnects the session.

2-BF4 showing the orange icons on the right at times indicating connection issues.

3- Unable to connect to Tunngle or play any games over virtual LAN.

Okay..so before I posted here, I looked around trying to find what this "NAT" was and how to solve it and it all boiled down (as far as I understood) to opening ports in the modem.

I went into the settings of the MF823D but I could not find any option about port forwarding and instead a DMZ option that I turned on but there was no effect and the NAT issues persisted.

What do you think I should do and is it possible to open ports on this modem?
Most 4G carriers employ what is known as "Carrier Grade NAT" - This means that one IP address is shared across several different users. It is not possible to forward ports through to your device on such connections. Thanks for replaying.

So this has nothing to do with the modem itself but the carrier. Is it possible that the carrier WOULD assign me an IP address if I asked them?UPDATE:

I tried the SIM card on my phone and tethered my COMPUTER to it. I was able to connect to Tunngle (The icon at the bottom right corner was yellow) and I MANAGED to play on GTA V without the NAT Restricted warning. It seems the problem is not from the carrier.

Solve : Internet sharing Help?

Answer»

Hey guys,
I just want to know if it's possible to share my wifi internet(usb wifi adapter + connected to the internet) to my router. From pc to router Yes, you can.
But some details are needed.
Here are some questions:
What kind of computers and mobile devices are using?
what operating system are you using?
What kind of router to you now have? And does it not have Wi-Fi capabilities?

In a home network situation the usual procedure is something like this. There is a modem connected to a router which has Wi-Fi capabilities. Or, in many cases the modem, router and Wi-Fi access are all in a single unit.
In the Windows 7 and Windows 10 there is a way of sharing your Internet connection with others by using a Wi-Fi adapter that is placed in the AP mode. However, this is seldom needed in most cases. It is more of a convenience thing to make it perhaps easier to control the use of the Internet by other people in your house. Specifically, when your computer is turned off they cannot get to the shared access point because the access point is actually coming from your computer.
Does this help any?Quote from: Geek-9pm on July 08, 2016, 01:18:30 PM

Thank you for replying.

First of all I have a normal pc : ProcessorIntel(R) Celeron(R) CPU G1610 @ 2.60GHz, 2600 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)
Ram : 4GB
OS : Windows 7 Pro
Wifi Adapter : D-Link DWA-123 Wireless N 150 USB Adapter
Router : Airlink101 Wireless N Router AR675

I just want to share the internet connection from the USB Wireless Adapter to the Router(From PC LAN -> Router WAN).
So I want to if it's possible to do that

This is dictation.

Okay. in some cases that can be done when other devices in your house are not able to connect to the same Wi-Fi connection.
Let me describe to you what happened my case. Before getting a better Internet connection, the only way I could get Internet was through Wi-Fi and only using a very special Wi-Fi router that had been modified for experimental use. Tablet that it will pick up a very weak signal from my neighbors Wi-Fi and then have access to it here in my house by means of that particular router. However, not everybody in my house has a computer with an Ethernet connection. And even if they did, it would be awkward to run the cable from my home office into the living room so SOMEBODY else could get into the Internet. So the lot thing to do was figure out some way to share my Internet connection with other devices in the house by using Wi-Fi.
Not if my neighbors Wi-Fi signal had been very strong, there would not be much of a problem. But because it was a weak signal I had to use a router with 2 Antennas and Pl. it in a certain location in my office to pick up my neighbors Wi-Fi signal. I will spare you the details of how that is done, but just say it's a custom application.
Now in your case I understand you're getting Internet connection on your PC by using a wireless adapter. The wireless adapter is, of course, the USB device. Making one device work as both a receiver and a repeater is hard to do. Instead, there is a different approach.
The way this is done is by using what is called a Wi-Fi extender or a Wi-Fi bridge. This works quite well in Windows 10 and with the right software it will even work in Windows XP. Is a brief outline of what I did.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Wavlink-300mbps-Wifi-Repeater-Wireless-N-802-11n-Network-Signal-Extender-Booster-/231734912414?hash=item35f47a259e:g:J5MAAOSwnNBXYkMj

My special router was sending the Internet to my computer by using the ethernet connection. Then I installed a low-cost USB Wi-Fi adapter onto my computer. This particular model had a special function. You could switch to what is called the AP mode. In that mode, what ever is on my Ethernet also gets sent over to the USB port and sends it out over the Wi-Fi capabilities of the Wi-Fi USB adapter.
This is a feature of Windows it is not very often used, however it has some distinct advantages. It allowed to use a device that is capable of picking up a very weak signal and then re-transmit it locally so that everybody in the house can get a decent Wi-Fi data on a different channel. This is called a AP device. Usually you can pick up some small low-cost AP devices from mail-order companies. Some of these devices are built in such a way that you can just plug them into a wall socket and run a Ethernet wire to your PC.

Remember, the two wireless devices must use separate channels and the physical separation ought to be at least two meters, 6 feet.

However, in your case there is a pitfall. If we have two Wi-Fi devices in close proximity to each other you end up having a problem if one of him is working ASKED an AP and the other is working as a client. At close range they can interfere with each other. So in your case you would set up a bridge so that the USB Wi-Fi device would also share the connection with your Ethernet. You said you have a standard computer, so that means it must have an Ethernet connector on somewhere.
After you bridge the USB device and the Ethernet connector together using a special software, you will then have to get another device to repeat the data onto a Wi-Fi channel that is not being used for the other device.

If you have an older spare router laying around, it is automatically, by default, but AP device on the Wi-Fi. Or to put it another way, most Wi-Fi routers expect the Internet connection to go into one of the cables that smart WAN. If so, it will transmit whatever is on any of the Internet connections to the Wi-Fi antenna. That is the normal mode for an AP wireless router.
A simple trick is to make a bridge inside of Windows to connect the USB port to the Ethernet port by using a software socket called a bridge. This is one way to let your users have access to any data you get over your Wi-Fi adapter that's in the USB port.
I'm going to refer you to an article about how to set up a network bridge using Windows. Some time ago the bridge could only be made between two devices that were exactly alike. But now, Windows will allow you to set up a bridge between an ethernet device and a USB device that has Wi-Fi. This vastly widens the scope of applications where you can share Internet with family and friends without the need to buy specialized equipment.
This post is being done with speech recognition. I can talk much better than I can type, most of the time. If you see something funny and out of place, it is because the speech recognition software is getting a little bit behind and quite cannot follow me as I speak.
Anyway, what you want is called a network bridge and it is a PIECE of software in Windows and is capable of joining a Ethernet connection and a USB Wi-Fi connection. I have done it before and most of the time it works real good. The issue usually comes up with what they call DHCP. if that happens, come back here and your myself or somebody else can help you sort out. The trick is that you may have to set it up so that only one device and system is doing the DHCP thin g.

Solve : Wifi barely working, Network Adapter might be the culprit.?

Answer»

I have a wireless internet connection that has been almost unusable to me for over a month. I am SOMETIMES able to get ONTO a page on my browser, sometimes it takes 10-20 minutes to load a page, other days are better. I have better access on my cell phone, and my house-mates don't have the same problem that I do, so my problem is certainly my computer.

Details about my computer:
Windows 10 v.1511
64-bit OS
RAM 8GB
INTEL Core i3-4150 @ 3.50 GHz

Things I've tried in order to fix my computer's ability to use wireless internet:

  • Turned the router on and off a few times.
    Result: No difference.
  • Checked for viruses.
Result: AVG updated and scan with no viruses, McAfee Security updated and scan with no viruses, Windows is up to date.
  • Start->run->cmd: “ipconfig/all”
    Result: IP address = 192.x.x.x
    DNS = 64.x.x.x
    “ping 127.0.0.1” = sent 4, received 4, lost 0
  • Unchecked everything in LAN Settings.
    Result: No difference.
  • Updated driver software for Intel.
Result: “The best driver software for your device is already installed.”
  • Reset settings on Chrome.
    Result: No difference.
  • Check ICP/TP Settings
Result: “Obtain an IP address automatically / Obtain a DNS Server automatically.”
  • "ipconfig /flushdns"
    Result: No difference
  • WINSOCK reset
    Result: No difference.
  • Completed Wifi diagnostics.
Result: It says that my issue is the wireless network adapter. I may be imagining this, but it seems like consistently clicking the diagnostic/fixing tool in Network Connections is actually correcting the issue temporarily.
  • In Device Manager, I go through all of the Network Adapters (I have 10, most WAN miniports), and they all say that they're working properly. I try to Update Driver Software, but they all say that they're up to date. When I do the Diagnostic, the details suggest the problem is with the TP-LINK.
  • “Network adapters:
    Intel(R) Ethernet Connection (2) 1218-V
    TP-LINK 300MBps Wireless N Adapter
    WAN Miniport (IKEv2)
    WAN Miniport (IP)
    WAN Miniport (Ipv6)
    WAN Miniport (L2TP)
    WAN Miniport (Network Monitor)
    WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
    WAN Miniport (PPTP)
    WAN Miniport (SSTP)
Right now I'm repeatedly clicking “Diagnose this connection” in order to get some kind of consistency from my wireless connection. Whether it's all in my head or not, this seems to be the best I can do, and it doesn't always work.
Please explain one thing. Are you using both an Ethernet connection and Wi-Fi card at the sometime on one computer?
Normally you would use one or the other, but not both.
The Ethernet connection is my choice. But if I want to verify that a Wi-Fi device is good, I disable the Ethernet.

Are you using both an Ethernet connection and Wi-Fi card at the sometime on one computer?

No. I'm only using my WiFi connection. My Ethernet is disabled.

Also, I seemed to be imagining things with hitting that diagnose connection button over and over because it is not working for me today. This is from dictation.
There are some additional things you might consider. The fact that it works for a while but then stops working is not usually of software related problem unless there is some other task in your system that interferes with your network software settings. If so, it would be some kind of network application that tries to work in the background and wants to take control of the network connection.
You can try booting in safe mode with networking and see if you get a good connection in that configuration. Also, you may wish to create a new user account, login to the new user account and set up your wireless adapter again. Normally each user has to have his own access to a wireless device. So that will give you an opportunity to set up the wireless interface once again.
Another issue is the password security features being used presently. In the past, and even still, the password security features cause me a lot of pain in the lower part of my body. In some cases you may have to relax the wireless security level, perhaps using an older wireless security method. Of course, the danger of that is that somebody could eavesdrop on your conversations and perhaps even getting your computer. So if you do reduce the security level of the wireless, be extremely careful when you do it and don't leave it on in that condition for very long.
If you have another computer or even a tablet at hand, you can check out see how your tablet, smart phone or laptop does with the wireless.
There's a good chance the trouble is with the wireless adapter itself. What I have done is use a cheap wireless adapter I got off of eBay. You can get these things for sometimes less than six dollars and the seem to work as good as the higher-priced ones. In fact, I have a wireless adapter now that actually works better than my Ethernet connection. I believe that adapter is for sale on eBay from overseas and goes for about for five dollars.
Number one thing I am not sure about is the use of 64-bit drivers. For quite a while 64-bit drivers are not available for many of the low cost Wi-Fi interface.
Another thing you can try, only for diagnostic purposes, is to boot up one of the live CDs that are available. These live CDs could be something like Ubuntu Linuxor Mint Linux. You just boot them up in demo mode and they do not require any space on your hard drive. They work in memory alone and even can do Wi-Fi access. So if you can get into your network reliably using a Linux boot disk, that would suggest something is wrong with your Windows Wi-Fi configuration. But if the connection proves to be unreliable even with the Linux demo disc, it would suggest that the trouble really is in the wireless adapter itself.
That is about the best I can do for now.
Sorry for the long awaited reply.

I believed from your suggestion that the issue is most likely that the adapter NEEDS changing, so I peered inside of my computer to check on it, only to find that my internet started to work. I feel rather embarrassed about this, but my issue seems to be that where I position my computer is in not the best receiving area for Wi-Fi. Rather than mess with my limited fung-shway, I bought an antenna to attach to my adapter. It works fine now, for the most part; and when my internet has difficulty I simply move it out until it starts working again. Perhaps not the most effective, but it works.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. They have helped me to solve my problem. In return I hope you accept a little piece of art from me as a token of my gratitude. Once I got my Wi-Fi working again I was able to download the software in order to make this. Thanks, Geek-9pm.

Solve : How to prevent android user to steal my internet ( advanced)?

Answer»

1.I find out that android users use malicious apps such as 'ProxyDroid' to bypass all router filters.
Is there any certain way to deal with those 'piggpeggers'?

2. Another thing. My router log in address was 195.168.1.1. Now it become 195.168.1.1:80 I dont recall it was before.
I use Opera browser.

Thanks for answers. If you think someone GOT into your router and changed settings then go into it write down settings you need for any port forwardings etc, perform a hardware factory reset of the router. Change the default password of the router so that others should be locked out of its configuration. Then go in and make it specific configuration to your needs.

The :80 at the tail end of the IP address is just telling it to use port 80. This port is the most commonly used port for internet outbound. Calling the IP address without port 80 designation should bring you to the same result.

Additionally dont have a open wifi, SET the wifi to be SECURED and use a different key than that of what you had prior.

This should keep them out unless your router was rooted and has a backdoor to gain access to it with a altered BlackHat flash ROM programmed onto it. I have doubts that your issue is this deep.

If your router is a linksys you might want to check to make sure its not a vulnerable model to be targeted for a flaw: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2098160/worm-themoon-infects-linksys-routers.htmlWell I`ll be getting a new modem soon which will have a new set of protocalls and a built in FIREWALL so if anyone is hacking that should keep them out and off my network.By the way I change my password periodadaclly just for my own security.Just a note. It is not always easy to tell somebody is getting into your network. When people do it on purpose, they don't leave clues. You need to talk to the technical support of the company that provides hour with Internet in the local area.

Solve : XBox 360 sees only one drive on my computer...?

Answer»

I am such a noob, so if this is in the wrong place or a stupid question, I apologize ahead of time. Anywhoosles, I have my XBox 360 connected to my router, and my PC connected to my router, and the XBox 360 allows me to connect and stream music, pictures, and video from my computer, however, the only files it shows are those that are located on my default C drive in My Documents. Unfortunately, I store most everything on a seperate drive that has much, much, much more space, and that is where all my music, pictures, and videos reside. My actual My Documents folder contains nothing. Is there a way to make my documents point to a different drive? Or default to another drive? Any help would be greatly appreciated.Right click the My Documents folder and change it's target to point to where you want it to be.
This won't move anything in the original folder though.
Is that what you're looking for? That did the trick. Now the only setback is that most of my videos are DIVX and the XBox isn't recognizing them. Probably have to switch em over to WMV. Thank you though, that really helped. You're welcome, happy to help.
Not sure if the XBox can recognize DivX, it may be impossible.
Try using TVC to convert them to WMV.
It's shareware though, so you'll have to pay after a while (15 days I THINK) and it leaves a watermark at the top of the video.
If you want something completely free, use Super C.
However, I've had ISSUES with this not being able to convert files properly.
Hopefully it'll work for you though.
Hope that helps too.

I'll try to be as clear as i can but im fairly CLUELESS as to whats happening to me. :-?

I have a broadband modem that came with my ISP connection (zyxel prestige 600). Every so often when i am connected, my computer will stop showing web pages. It says looking for web page for a while then shows could not connect/could not find. As far as i have tried all other services keep running, my torrents are still downloading and i can still play online games, just web pages and outlook express stop working.

After switching my modem off and then back on it's usually working again fine. Also if i leave it on it will eventually start working again (it drops for around 20/30 min at a time, havn't really timed it). I have disabled my firewall to CHECK so im sure its not the cause. I dont know if its my computer or the modems problem.

I know its pretty vague but i cant see any logic to it, sometimes working, sometimes not. Any ADVISE would be appreciated.

Many Thanks,
JamesIn alot of instances this can be old wiring into the home...do you notice a correlation between phone calls and this happening ? ?No it happens much more often than phone calls and at all hours of the night. Also i've formatted my computer since this began and no change so im ruling out virus/malware. Thanks for your reply.Request a NEW modem from your ISP...how hot does that thing get ? ?Not so hot that i've ever taken notice, i'll try getting on to my isp though, thanks for your help.Reason i asked is i had a SpeedStream DSL modem once i used to FRY eggs on...it lasted less than 3 months.

Not big enough for an omelette' but it worked fine for a Mexican Breakfast...Excellent, i will keep that in mind, i hate throwing things out

Solve : DSL not working on laptop after use of wireless?

Answer»

We (me and my family) use the same ADSL connection for our laptop as for our desktops at home here in Finland. It's worked fine before, but it hasn't worked since we came back from a few weeks holiday in Florida. In florida, we had the laptop connected to the net with the wireless connection of the apartment we had rented.
We don't know why the DSL isn't working on the laptop now - it's working on the desktops just fine like before. All the plugs are in place. It might be something about some internet settings, but I don't recall changing them to get the wireless work, so there shouldn't be anything to change back.

Any suggestions on what to do..?

Thank you.Bring up a command window on the laptop and type ipconfig/? for the available options (depends on your windows VERSION).
If it is XP or W2k release the IP, flush the DNS cache, exit the command window and reboot the laptop. The command console won't let me execute any ipconfig related commands. I'd put the message here exactly as it was there but it's in Finnish. It says something like it can't execute anything because it's not connected or the NETWORK is not there... And I'm suspecting it means the wireless network and not the ADSL network, because writing "ipconfig" without quotes in the console returns a message that says something like "Network STATUS: offline" or "not connected".

:-/You may have to reset that wireless modem...there is USUALLY a pinhole switch to do this.
Look up the manuf. website which should have complete instructions...

Solve : Securing my connection..?

Answer»

I just set up a wireless CONNECTION for my cable connection. I've messed with the network settings but even when I change the setup, any computer can see and connect to my connection. Any tips on locking everyone out, would be greatly appreciated! You'll have to log onto the router's admin page and change the settings there.
It differs from router to router (or modem).
What do you have?I have a Belkin Wireless G Router. I've turned off the broadcast of the SSID, put it at WPA-PSK, TKIP and set a key.

Anything else you can think of that I should be doing that's missed? That's the same as I've DONE with my modem/router at home, and no one can see it or connect without knowing the SSID and PSK.
I don't see anything you've missed. How much of a performance hit is enabling WPA Calum ? ?great, thanks!

One thing you might do is limit the number of users that can logon to your network through the router settings.

Good idea. Also, assigning IP addresses manually and disabling dynamic allocation is something I've done.

Umm . . . no idea, LOL. I've not used it without encryption much, and my internet is only 2Mb/sec, and I don't share files across their network.
So I'm not really sure how fast it is as I've never tested it.
When I get home later today, I'll USE Sandra to benchmark it.

great, thanks!
Happy to help. Not mentioned: Be sure to change the default user name and password for accessing the router. If the router has remote administration, be sure it is disabled.Ah yes.
Otherwise anyone who CONNECTS can change all the settings.
It's surprising (slightly frightening too) how many people don't even try to secure their network - no encryption, no password, default admin username and password - and then complain when someone connects, even accidentally.

Solve : Have LAN Connection but no internet access?

Answer»

We have 5 computers all networked with LAN cables. Computers B,C,D and E all access a dial up modem to the INTERNET via computer A. Up until recently, all worked well. Now computer B whilst able to access all the other computers in this home network, is unable to access the internet.

Computer B can see the dial up network connection, as connected, as well as the local area connection, but internet and email are not available/accessible.

Have replaced the Lan Cable, disabled the firewall, checked internet connection sharing and run anti virus AVG.

Computer B - as are all 4 other computers, is using Windows Home XP Service Pack 2.

What else can we do?

Please can someone help. What happened before computer B stopped connecting?Quote from: Jackie on March 30, 2007, 03:45:32 PM

What else can we do?

At this STAGE, you should think about buying a suitable router. Much better performance, easier to configure, and more suitable to a small workgroup since PC A does not need to be left switched on.Nothing, that I am AWARE of... it is my daughter's computer and it literally was working fine one day and the next, when she went to access the internet, she couldn't. My husband and I have tried everything we can think of. To the other reply, thank you... however, because we have children connected, it is actually better if they have to route through computer A, as computer A is my husband's and we don' want them accessing the net, during peak hours, and without our knowledge. What error do you receive?
I would look to DNS and Gateway record of the computer with the problem (should be the same with the settings of the others computers that connect to internet by computerA).
Do the following:
start->run->cmd (enter)
ipconfig /all >>c:\outipconf.txt

Copy the content of outipconf.txt here, show us the ip settings.

Do you use a proxy program or just plain Internet Connection Sharing on computerA?Only error message is after trying to connect and that is "Cannot find server or DNS error". We are using Internet connection sharing, and will send you ip info shortlyThank you for your interest and willingness to help, it is appreciated. I continued reading up on the internet, after you asked what error message do I get, and decided to follow some advice that I found. Don't quite know the reasoning behind what I was advised, but it worked. I was advised to put in a preferred DNS server 209.193.72.2 and an alternate DNS server 209.193.68.2.

As stupid as this may sound, are the preferred and alternate DNS "addresses" safe, in any and all ways and if not would you mind advising please?Where did you get these DNS server addresses from, Jackie? The best addresses to use would be the DNS servers run by your ISP.Jackie, you have a computer that does not work and some computers that work. Use the DNS from the computers that work also on the computer in your network with the problem.
By the way, I would advise switching to ADSL rather than Dial-Up, it's a lot more error free and easier to sort out when you have trouble like this. One suggestion I would have would be to (rather than have computer A on when you want to and all other computers HOOKING up to it) - if you want to restrict their hours of access - is to switch to ADSL for a start, but then but what they call a network switch or router, and connect all the computers to this, but the modem to this as well, as opposed to through a computer. This means that anybody can access the internet at anytime, which is not what you want to happen. This is why they have programs that can restrict internet access times and websites, which can be put in place on all of their computers. Just a suggestion.

Solve : want to remove home network?

Answer»

I tried setting up a home network with my desktop and work laptop - both xp. I changed my MIND and decided I shouldn't because I use the laptop to vpn into a client's computer. I disabled file sharing and did system restore on my desktop and this eliminated the network. The laptop won't let me do a system restore. It shows me that the network group will be affected and I tell it ok. I starts the restore and then says it can't do it because there are no CHANGES. I have tried 3 different restore points and the same thing happens. Is there any other way to totally eliminate the network workgroup ? It shows under Microsoft Windows Network. THANKS for any help you can give me. I would really like to get this off before I give it BACK to the client. It has probably been remembered under C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Nethood (a hidden folder). You may also need to change the workgroup (e.g. back to the default "MSHOME"). Right-click "My Computer"; choose "Properties"; go to the Computer NAME tab.And delete all network connections from the "My Network Connections" location.

Solve : How can I get my computers to talk to each other ??

Answer»

I have two computers connected to a wireless network. One runs Win XP, the other Win 2K. Setup is MSHOME (workgroup).
When I look at the network summary page by typing in the internet address into the IE7 (http://192.xxx.x.xx) the home network does show up, it also listed the two computers. I never run any home network set up, both computers are just connected to my wireless connection. How can I get the two computers to talk to each other? I tried to set up home net work using Win XP but could not complete it as I am not how how to proceed. Reading several articles on this topic did not help me. Help! When you say "talk to each other" what do you actually want to be able to do?I want to be able to grab the music files from my laptop and move them to my desktop. Is it only about setting shared files? I have tried to read up on this subject but having difficult time understanding it. I beleive there was a post earlier addressing this issue.
Yes, shared files/folders is all you need. If you do a search for "shared files" I suspect you'll find quite a few relevant posts. Let us know if you're still stuck though. Thanks, still I tried and failed. I am still new to networking. I went to workgroup and found both laptop and desktop. From my desktop, I clicked the icon of the laptop but it came back as not accessible. No network path found?

I set the itune file on my laptop for sharing because I would like to TRANSFER the file from my laptop to my desktop but failed.

MP
Sorry for all the trouble. I just checked my firewall event list and found that I needed to topen port 445 to allow my desktop to access my laptop. I went ahead and did it and now I can access my laptop.

Now I have figure out how to set up my printer. I plugged my printer into the router so both computers can access it, but still trying to figure out how. I am wondering if I need to do the same THING with my wireless router firewall (open a port). My router is 2wire 1800HG gateway.

MP
You don't say what kind of printer you have. You may have to go into the router and give it a static IP, then run the software for it on each machine to be able to see it. You also may just have to run the software that came with the printer. I've done it both ways.

Alan <>< HP Photosmart All In One 2600 series. Finally, using the cd that came with the printer, I was able to install the printer (connected to the wireless router in a different room) on my desktop running Win XP. Now I can print from my desktop. Now I am going to find out how my laptop can see this printer. I may have to run the cd in the same manner as when I installed this printer on my desktop, but this would not be considered network shared printer then? It is just two computers can print on the same printer??

MPAs for the printer u dont have to install it again in the laptop by running the installation CD again, all u have to do is to go to your desktop PC in printers and faxes, locate the HP 2600n RIGHT click it and share that printer. Then go to to your laptop and and open printers and faxes and click add a printer click next and remember to select a network or a printer attached to another computer. You can either browser or connect to it, if u no the path to it, the easiest way is to connect to it well i do that for mine. If u want to connect to it in the Name box type this \\ followed by the computer name where the printer is installed end with \ that should open your printer just select and CONTINUE with the rest. I have the same printer at work and it is simple and easy to connect it. The other method is by connecting through a network but u have to assign it an IP, default gateway or subnetmask.

Hope this works for u. I hate mirc shortcuts

If you want to share the printer on your network, you have to install drivers on all the computers. See the manual for more information...
Otherwise you will have a large CHANCE to miss a good part of printer options, when you will use it from another computer in the network.

Solve : network problem??

Answer»

Hello, I am having an issue with my router connection. Currently we are operating 8 computers on this router. I have available USB ports for more computers so I plugged in another cable to another computer. But, instead of getting a steady green light next to the USB port I get a flashing green light? All other ports have connectivety and have steady non-flashing green lights? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Usually a flashing green light MEANS that there is traffic going to/from that machine. But that's only as far as I know. Perhaps listing the router make/model will allow some one ELSE to further help you.My suggestion: for further expanding your network do not use the usb option. Buy a switch and connect it to router (cat5e cable, of course).
As SilentAssasin64 said: what model is your router?I think you may find that those additional USB ports are for PLUGGING in certain peripherals (e.g. cameras or PRINTERS) rather than extra computers. Certainly several of the DrayTek routers have that functionality.

Your network may ave reached the point where you need to install another hub/switch. But they're pretty cheap, so that's not a problem.Quote from: viking on April 03, 2007, 11:52:01 PM

Solve : wireless internet troubles, please help me!?

Answer»

Alright so basically, I'm running a netgear router to 3 other computers in the house. We recently got a new router because our linksys one kept cutting out all the time.

On the one computer, I can't get it to connect. I'm using a Belkin WIRELESS card on it. It will pop up and say "wireless networks DETECTED in range of this computer, click for further information" but whenever I do that, nothing shows up in the available networks section. Also if I go to the belkin wireless utility, it shows up in there, says the signal is fine and all that, but still won't connect to it.

It worked fine prior to switching the routers, I've tried rolling back the driver, creating a new wireless connection, repairing (says it can't because it can't turn off the network adapter, I've done it manually and tried it, still didn't work) I'm totally clueless about what else to try, my cd-rom on that computer recently stopped working so I can't really re-install the belkin utilities.

Should I try to find a driver for the wireless card and try updating it? I've tried everything I can think of. Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks guys/girls I am going to attempt at an answer here* be gentle!!

What "I" did was , I went to my computer (admin) and went thru wndws XP
setup a new wireless connection ....I ran thru the setup and saved* it on a flash memory stick*

I then went to the other computer in another house and put the flash drive in the usb port and downloaded it c:/

then I did the same thing on that computer but not a "new" connection

does this make sense at all to you ? It worked for me......

(might have to delete all the other setups you might have tried at this point before attempting this....)
"On the one computer, I can't get it to connect." Does that mean the others connect OK?

You don't say if the computers can talk to eachother in your POST. If they can, try this. Take the Belkin cd with the software for your wireless card, copy it to a folder on one of the other machines / share that folder / access that folder from the one with the bum CD / RUN the utility. Turn off or do not use the Windows wireless utility

Post back with the results.

Solve : Why oh why did i go to sky?

Answer»

I'm at my wits end ever since i changed to Sky BB I've had connection problems. I can see a little light at the end of the proverbial tunnel but need help to make it brighter. I shall attempt to explain my prob. I have a single PC connected v ethernet cable to a netgear router supplied by sky. My problem is that i keep loosing my search function with a p2p service i use often. At first i thought i sussed the prob as it was something to do with upnp not being set up...so this i did and it worked for a limited time...sometimes an hour sometimes several. What ive noticed is that one of two of the little icons disapears (little computer bottom right corner) and this sems to coinside with me loosing connection with the p2p or part of the facilities anyway. One of the icons is network connection (this never goes off an is always connected at 100mbps. The one that disapears on me is the Internet connection. Ive tried going into the properties of this but am denied accsess saying that it is not config to allow netwrk users control or change the settings. But I'm not on a network !!..i'm sure this is part of the prob..but Im all out of ideas... Dunno if this means anything, but when with AOL and wa connected with there DSL I didnt have any of these probs and was always connected 24/7 unlike nowdays....... Any help most appreciated..Ta.. in advanceCan you provide a screenshot of that icon, and the context menu that pops up when you right-click on it?Hi Rob, I dont know how to apply a screen shot, but the icon is simply two little computers, one slightly behind the other. When you hover the curser over, the information states " Internet Connection. Status:Connected" if you right click the following options are advertised: Disable, Status, Change Windows Firewall settings, Open network connections.

Thx...Okay. Could you please do the following.

  • open a command prompt (Start-->Run-->"cmd"-->okay
  • type ipconfig /all [ ENTER ]
  • cut and paste the RESULTS here

Thanx...

ive been having similiar problems and sky customer services is really pathetic ,i hope u get it sorted

my problem is my sky router loses connection intermittently or as often as every 15-19 minutes ,ive changed sky's router for my own and i'm still having problems ,so i'm headbanging the wall ,if anyone knows whats up can they pm me

diver if u need sky's router codes to try another router i'll gladly send them you ,,

like u say "why oh why did i join sky "

lets hope a sky manager sees this and offers us free access as a way of compensation Hi Lazyhazy... I had the same prob when i first joined sky an after numerous phonecalls i finally got an tech'y person that actually knew what a pc was !!. THEY CHANGED ME FROM 16MB TO 8 Which at the time seemed to resolve that problem only leaving me with the one I'm experiencing now...Thx for the offer of the codes..but already have...I sign in a sky admin...lol. Honestly though I have rang them more than 30 times (each time paying a premium rate dont forget) they always say that someone from a higher it skill will call back WITHIN 5 days...never recieved a call in three months..Ive now stopped my direct debit in the hope they will call me and I can send 10,ooo volts through the phone line..haha...wish i could....Good Luck with your prob....dont hold breath for them to resolve thoughbeware ,i told the sky pillock that i'd cancel my dd and the CHEEKY ##~~~~
SAID go ahead they'll get the money eventually off a debt company ,so i stayed ,,
what i am going to do asap is ask to go on the free package ,at least then i aint paying for a naff service

Judging by all that has been said in this thread, I would say the most likely source of the problem is the Sky connection. I suggest trying a different P2P service or client program. It may be that Sky's routers are overloaded but that trying something different will have better results.Maybe your router needs a firmware upgrade. Some modern routers seem to have trouble with P2P networking as did my Linksys WRT45GEU which kept resetting the connection upon BitTorrent activity..

Solve : There going to erase the internet and make a new one!!!!!!!!!!!!?

Answer»

Here is the article. Its on the yahoo homepage. But I thought that the internet was like a ghost in the shell or somthing because it was a resalte of all the servers being together and interacting with each other. So how are they going to replace it?

NEW YORK - Although it has already taken nearly four decades to get this far in building the Internet, some university researchers with the federal government's blessing want to scrap all that and start over.

The idea may seem unthinkable, even absurd, but many believe a "clean slate" approach is the only way to truly address security, mobility and other challenges that have cropped up since UCLA professor Leonard Kleinrock helped supervise the first exchange of meaningless test data between two machines on Sept. 2, 1969.

The Internet "works WELL in many situations but was designed for completely different assumptions," said Dipankar Raychaudhuri, a Rutgers University professor overseeing three clean-slate projects. "It's sort of a miracle that it continues to work well today."

No longer constrained by slow connections and computer processors and high costs for storage, researchers say the time has come to rethink the Internet's underlying architecture, a move that could mean replacing networking equipment and rewriting software on computers to better channel future traffic over the existing pipes.

Even Vinton Cerf, one of the Internet's founding fathers as co-developer of the key communications techniques, said the exercise was "generally healthy" because the current technology "does not satisfy all needs."

One challenge in any reconstruction, though, will be balancing the interests of various constituencies. The first time around, researchers were able to toil away in their labs quietly. Industry is playing a bigger role this time, and law enforcement is BOUND to make its needs for wiretapping known.

There's no evidence they are meddling yet, but once any research looks promising, "a number of people (will) want to be in the drawing room," said Jonathan Zittrain, a law professor affiliated with Oxford and Harvard universities. "They'll be wearing coats and ties and spilling out of the venue."

The National Science Foundation wants to build an experimental research network known as the Global Environment for Network Innovations, or GENI, and is funding several projects at universities and elsewhere through Future Internet Network Design, or FIND.

Rutgers, Stanford, Princeton, Carnegie Mellon and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are among the universities pursuing individual projects. Other government agencies, including the Defense Department, have also been exploring the concept.

The European Union has also backed research on such initiatives, through a program known as Future Internet Research and Experimentation, or FIRE. Government officials and researchers met last month in Zurich to discuss early findings and goals.

A new network could run parallel with the current Internet and eventually replace it, or perhaps aspects of the research could go into a major overhaul of the existing architecture.

These clean-slate efforts are still in their early stages, though, and aren't EXPECTED to bear fruit for another 10 or 15 years — assuming Congress comes through with funding.

Guru Parulkar, who will become executive director of Stanford's initiative after heading NSF's clean-slate programs, estimated that GENI alone could cost $350 million, while government, university and industry spending on the individual projects could collectively reach $300 million. Spending so far has been in the tens of millions of dollars.

And it could take billions of dollars to replace all the software and hardware deep in the legacy systems.

Clean-slate advocates say the cozy world of researchers in the 1970s and 1980s doesn't necessarily mesh with the realities and needs of the commercial Internet.

"The network is now mission critical for too many people, when in the (early days) it was just experimental," Zittrain said.

The Internet's early architects built the system on the principle of trust. Researchers largely knew one another, so they kept the shared network open and flexible — qualities that proved key to its rapid growth.

But spammers and hackers arrived as the network expanded and could roam freely because the Internet doesn't have built-in mechanisms for knowing with CERTAINTY who sent what.

The network's designers also assumed that computers are in fixed locations and always connected. That's no longer the case with the proliferation of laptops, personal digital assistants and other mobile devices, all hopping from one wireless access point to another, losing their signals here and there.

Engineers tacked on improvements to support mobility and improved security, but researchers say all that adds complexity, reduces performance and, in the case of security, amounts at most to bandages in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse.

Workarounds for mobile devices "can work quite well if a small fraction of the traffic is of that type," but could overwhelm computer processors and create security holes when 90 percent or more of the traffic is mobile, said Nick McKeown, co-director of Stanford's clean-slate program.

The Internet will continue to face new challenges as applications require guaranteed transmissions — not the "best effort" approach that works better for e-mail and other tasks with less time sensitivity.

Think of a doctor using teleconferencing to perform a surgery remotely, or a customer of an Internet-based phone service needing to make an emergency call. In such cases, even small delays in relaying data can be deadly.

And one day, sensors of all sorts will likely be Internet capable.

Rather than create workarounds each time, clean-slate researchers want to redesign the system to easily accommodate any future technologies, said Larry Peterson, chairman of computer science at Princeton and head of the planning group for the NSF's GENI.

Even if the original designers had the benefit of hindsight, they might not have been able to incorporate these features from the get-go. Computers, for instance, were much slower then, possibly too weak for the computations needed for robust authentication.

"We made decisions based on a very different technical landscape," said Bruce Davie, a fellow with network-equipment maker Cisco Systems Inc., which stands to gain from selling new products and incorporating research findings into its existing line.

"Now, we have the ability to do all sorts of things at very high speeds," he said. "Why don't we start thinking about how we take advantage of those things and not be constrained by the current legacy we have?"

Of course, a key question is how to make any transition — and researchers are largely punting for now.

"Let's try to define where we think we should end up, what we think the Internet should look like in 15 years' time, and only then would we decide the path," McKeown said. "We acknowledge it's going to be really hard but I think it will be a mistake to be deterred by that."

Kleinrock, the Internet pioneer at UCLA, questioned the need for a transition at all, but said such efforts are useful for their out-of-the-box thinking.

"A thing called GENI will almost surely not become the Internet, but pieces of it might fold into the Internet as it advances," he said.

Think evolution, not revolution.

Princeton already runs a smaller experimental network called PlanetLab, while Carnegie Mellon has a clean-slate project called 100 x 100.

These days, Carnegie Mellon professor Hui Zhang said he no longer feels like "the outcast of the community" as a champion of clean-slate designs.

Construction on GENI could start by 2010 and take about five years to complete. Once operational, it should have a decade-long lifespan.

FIND, meanwhile, funded about two dozen projects last year and is evaluating a second round of grants for research that could ultimately be tested on GENI.

These go beyond projects like Internet2 and National LambdaRail, both of which focus on next-generation needs for speed.

Any redesign may incorporate mechanisms, known as virtualization, for multiple networks to operate over the same pipes, making further transitions much easier. Also possible are new structures for data packets and a replacement of Cerf's TCP/IP communications protocols.

"Almost every assumption going into the current design of the Internet is open to reconsideration and challenge," said Parulkar, the NSF official heading to Stanford. "Researchers may come up with wild ideas and very innovative ideas that may not have a lot to do with the current Internet."

LOL
By the way, this is a repost of one of honvetops' latest news articles in the News section.I wasn't surprised to see this article. I knew about this plan for a while now. They have been talking about restructuring it for at least that last 3 or 4 years that I know of.

The biggest push now on restructuring it is for homeland security. So that they can get rid of annonymous connections and track it better to the origin of the problem. Also there was some talk about signatures embedded in wirless devices so that the traffic of hackers etc would have a hidden signature which could be traced back to who purchased the piece of hardware ... Good theory, but what if your laptop was stolen by a hacker or sold after being stolen to a hacker or terrorist. Their activities would look like you are doing it and not them.... Just a new form of identity theft... Computer Identity Theft !!!

The other jist that I get from the stories read and blogs is that the CIA, Homeland Security, and Federal Government wants to track everyones habbits better. Everyone has daily routine habbits which make up a pattern. When someone does something that is outside of their normal pattern, they want to know about it. This kind of hints on the NWO ( New World Order ) crap... Big brother is already watching us all, and they just want more detailed coverage now to our everyday lives to have control over us and have us pop up in a report of potential law violators when we do something that is unusually outside of our pattern... Just think, you go on vacation outside the US, this is outside your pattern, would you be black flagged for a Cruise to Bermuda.. etc

I personally have nothing to wory about. It is good that the devices that they want to add everywhere could make us safer to another attack if implemented in time and affective in tracking peoples profiles and daily routines. BUT ... It does take away your freedom to just go out and enjoy life without having someone always knowing where you are and about how long you would normally be there etc. It is going to be an invasion of privacy.

The Discovery Channel had a good episode on a month or so ago where they showed a system in England that used the camera's at intersections along with a computerized system to profile peoples lives. The software and system would take a measurement of facial features and create a finger print of each person. It then would track your x and y coordinates and follow you from camera to camera. PRETTY SCARY STUFF.

The other reason for the change goes back to the government once again. They want to tax the internet and turn it into a telephone like service where you would no longer have just your ISP bill, but a usage fee to generate revenue for the federal government, and also have a Customs-Like supercomputer which would not allow data communication passed to and from the US without being approved by the system which right now is a free for all.

Also, they want to free up bandwith of the existing internet infrastructure to corporations and the "RICH", and have tiers that you can pay for, where a basic service of the lowest tier would be a connection thats data has least priority over the other tiers above it. This gives the corporations and the Rich all the bandwidth they want with Extremely Little Conjestion since their data would have the highest priority. The middle tier or tiers obviosly wouldnt be that bad for data, but would be laggy due to the traffic of the higher tier having priority over it, and the basic lowest tier would suck big time with the least priority turning a broadband service at the lowest tier act like Dial-up.

All the large communication monopolys of the world want the taxation and Tiers to generate more revenue.

I would like to also add that, dont try to fix what is not broken. Over the last 10 years, I have only heard of the internet partially going down once, but it was not due to its design, it was only a small segment of it due to a dig problem in NYC that cut through a main communications cable feeding the entire north east US.

Has anyone heard anything else in detail regarding anything that I shared that I might not have added or other details not touched upon??

Dave

Awesome info, I figured the 1st 2.#.... then you get situations like this and things start to add up.... believe it or not, the new core 2 duo & multiple core cpu's are said to have some very serious bugs awaiting them in OLD- hidden code in software, take this for example*

"The new US stealth fighter, the F-22 Raptor, was deployed for the first time to Asia earlier this month. On Feb. 11, twelve RAPTORS flying from Hawaii to Japan were forced to turn back when a software glitch crashed all of the F-22s' on-board computers as they crossed the international date line. The delay in arrival in Japan was previously reported, with rumors of problems with the software. CNN television, however, this morning reported that every fighter completely lost all navigation and communications when they crossed the international date line. They reportedly had to turn around and follow their tankers by visual contact back to Hawaii. According to the CNN story, if they had not been with their tankers, or the weather had been bad, this would have been serious. CNN has not put up anything on their website yet." But I thought that the internet was a resulte of all the servers in the world being up and running. I didnt even know that the internet was really coded. I thought that it was just a way the servers interacted with each other.your probably right(no code) , i just went off on a bend there, i though I was in the sandbox!

Solve : have new laptop need to network internet connection?

Answer»

I recently purchased a laptop and need to network the internet connection. The PROBLEM is I can only get dial-up because of where I live. I remember an advertisement about a box that would ALLOW you to talk on the phone, and ACCESS the internet with several computers at the same time. Does anyone know about what I'm speaking of? If not, what is the best WAY to network my pc and my laptop with a dial up connection? That's called ISDN which gives you more than one phone line.

ADSL, which is a broadband connection over the phone line, may be available in your area as well.

Solve : Track a laptop down??

Answer»

Recently someone used our credit card number to order a Dell laptop online. We got the matter settled with our credit card company so the money is no longer the issue; I was just wondering if Dell could potentially help us track the culprit down.

Is there any way to pinpoint the location of a laptop if it's connected to the web via Wi-Fi? Does Dell have any way of identifying a laptop of its own (MAC address, maybe?) and find out its corresponding IP address? and in general, what could we potentially do with the MAC or IP address if we should discover it? a brief explanation of MAC and IP addresses would be very helpful.Dell has no vested interest in finding the laptop...they got paid so...

The laptop could only be traced if it had a GPS locator inside of it.

The millions of IP addresses being used times the number of possible MAC addresses reduce this POSSIBILITY even further.

Sorry.could you briefly explain -- what's the difference between an IP and MAC address? An IP is an Internet Service Provider's # assigned to users who are paying for Internet access...they are 12 digits in LENGTH and my math is kinda fuzzy right now so i don't know how many possibilities that amounts to...

A MAC address is a # assigned to a specific router which an Internet signal is broadcast to. Again there are a bunch of #'s involved here as well...Sorry Patio, but you need to read up on TCP/IP.

MAC adress

Quote
In computer networking a Media Access Control address (MAC address) is a unique identifier attached to most network adapters (NICs). It is a number that acts like a name for a particular network adapter, so, for example, the network cards (or built-in network adapters) in two different computers will have different names, or MAC addresses, as would an Ethernet adapter and a wireless adapter in the same computer, and as would multiple network cards in a router. However, it is possible to change the MAC address on most of today's hardware.

IP adress

Quote
An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique address that certain electronic devices use in order to IDENTIFY and communicate with each other on a computer network utilizing the Internet Protocol standard (IP)—in simpler terms, a computer address. Any participating network device—including routers, computers, time-servers, printers, Internet fax machines, and some telephones—can have their own unique address.

Quote
IPv4 uses 32-bit (4-byte) addresses, which limits the address space to 4,294,967,296 possible unique addresses.

IP adress do not have to be 12 digits in length. The one I'm currently assigned certainly isn't.

As for tracing the perpetrator: I'd trace back what you've done wrong in the past with PCs before as your personal information was obviously stolen.. Probably through the use of too many file sharing programs, Internet Explorer and too little security know-how..
Thanx for the clarifications...

Unless you've got someone digging through your trash cans... Note quite as likely, but still very possible. Be sure to shred credit card statements and anything of the like before throwing them out.Quote from: patio on April 18, 2007, 05:16:39 PM
