Solve : my connection is working but I can't browse...?

Answer»

Hello.

I use Verizon DSL with a Westell 6100 modem with a USB connection. All of my lights on my modem indicate that I am establishing a proper connection (power, USB, Internet, DSL) but I cannot browse the Internet, sign in to AIM, etc. I am not behind a firewall. I have had the problem since Saturday.

I contacted Verizon TECH Support last night and was on the phone with them for over an hour but alas, they were not much help. The lady finally told me that my LAN is not PROPERLY installed.

I am by no means a computer aficionado, but can anyone offer me any suggestions? Thanks so much.I have Verizon DSL also, and I can tell you right away that the FIRST problem I see is that you called Verizon tech support. It took me almost a month to get initially hooked up to DSL and they blamed my computer for not being able to get connected. It ended up that the problem was on their end and that I was not hooked into the right place at their SWITCHING center.
Were you ever able to get connected to Verizon's DSL, cause if you never could, maybe they have you hooked up to the wrong place at their switching center. If you were able to but now you're suddenly not able to maybe something isn't configured right with your NIC card.Did it ever work / if so has Verizon done any updates to their system & you've received a notice from them?

Alan <>< I am having a similar problem. I have verizon dsl with a wireless modem that is hooked to my desktop. I have a Compaq laptop with a wireless network card, that shows it is connected to the network, but I am not able to browse the internet with my laptop. Can someone offer suggestions?

thanksYes, both of you should read up on wireless security or hire a Verizon technician.
great ideaAIM, << these instant messgaing programs have always screwed me in the past on the wireless stuff.... i got rid of them...
yahoo
pal talk webcam stuff
aim
etc....You could try running the Winsock fix just for GIGGLES. That might help. You can also try spybot or ad aware. However, I would do the Winsock thing first. If you search on Google for it you should find it quickly.

Solve : password problem on home network?

Answer»

I have two pcs that I connected together. One runs windows XP SP2 and the other windows 2000 sp4. I can EASILY browse files on the XP computer from the w2k computer, but when I try to look at files on the w2k computer from the xp computer, I get a "user name" and "Password" dialog box. I did not arrange for any password when I used the windows network SETUP wizard. How do I get the pesky thing out of the way? Did you perhaps set the Windows 2000 OS to function on 'share-level security'? Go over the shared FOLDER settings and make sure they're set like the XP machine. On XP machine you allow the guest user to access your computer from the network (Administrative Tools -> Local Security Policy -> User rights assignment --- there you don't have the "guest" user listed at "Deny access at this computer from the network"). My guess...

To "get rid" of problem, I suggest you to create the same user account, with the same password on both computers (not a BLANK password!) or to allow the guest user the right to access computer from network. I think it's almost the same setting like in XP.

Solve : PC sees laptop on wireless, but laptop does'nt see PC?

Answer»

I have a LAN with a PC connected to a combo 10 base t / wireless router and cable modem. Also, a laptop connecting wirelessly. The PC works fine. Internet connection and other older computers on the LAN. I see the laptop in Network Places, and can transfer files to it. The laptop however, connects to the net, but does not see the PC. Which is what I want to be able to print to. I'm pulling my hair out, because I've checked firewall settings (both Windows & McAfee) protocals and everything I can think of. Now what's weard, is McAfee sees both just fine, and sends current status info both ways. Both run on XP. When I try to connect to the PC from the laptop, it says it can't FIND the path, or permission settings might be wrong. Well, every setting I can find or think of are the same. I really would appreciate your input. Thanks! LorinSecurity settings.
Long story told short: you have to grant the laptop user account rights on the computer. Or just use a common user account on laptop and computer. Please don't be running two software firewalls (XP and McAfee) on the same PC. That's a recipe for trouble.

Does this all work with all firewalls disabled? If so, you may not have opened all the necessary ports. Thanks for your reply. These two used to communicate just fine when I had them connected both 10 base t. I removed the hard-wired router, and installed the combo wireless. I didn't change any other settings. I'm THINKING of connecting the laptop to the router with a cable, and see if they will see each other again. I don't know if my problem is in the router, or XP, or what. I'm not at my home now, but I am on the laptop, so any thing I try will take a couple of days to prove out. Again, thanks for your time. LorinOkay, sure; try that. If you're still stuck it would be useful to know a BIT more about your router.Hi everyone,

Well, I had the chance to connect this laptop to the router with 10 base t. No change. The PC sees the laptop, I can upload, download files to it, but the laptop doesn't see the PC. At least I've eliminated the wireless side of the equation. What am I missing here?

The router is a Netgear Rangemax Model WPN824

Thanks, LorinHow do you see the laptop? What operation do you do to see the laptop?
Something like:
Start->Run->\\ip_of_laptop
Or do you browse through "My Nework Places"?
Or did you edit the hosts file? From Rob:
"Does this all work with all firewalls disabled?" Did you try that yet?

Open up Explorer / TYPE the name of the computer you're trying to see / what happens?

Solve : Bandwidth across two different subnets?

Answer»

I have a bet going for $1 with a co-worker that traffic from two subnets on the same transport of Cat 5e cable eat bandwidth up from the other... He believes that because they are on two separate subnets 255.255.255.0 and 255.0.0.0 that there is no interacton between the packets on the different subnets.

Haven't found anything online to prove either way. He thinks that both subnets will have full bandwidth and not +/- 50% PER subnet if both are full of traffic at the same time.

Due to electrophysics I would believe that they would affect each others bandwidth on the same cable that is shared between the two since the NICs are transmitting the packets on the same frequency and not separate channels on the cable.

Who is correct me or him and can you provide a link to the fact ... Its only $1 bet, but I am sure he will want to see the proof...

Thanks .... Dave Carrier sense multiple access(Click)Thanks Raptor !

Knew the answer was out there and someone here could help...

DaveGuess you should have raised the stakes. Transmission on an Ethernet cable cat 5e is full duplex. 1 pair is used for sending, one pair is used for receiving (in case of Gigabyt Ethernet we talk about 2 pairs for sending, 2 pairs for receiving). There is discussion between the use of hubs and switches, collission domains.

Of course that one transmission "affects" the other, each "eats" as much bandwidth as disponible. It is used the same SIGNAL, but with different identification patterns. There are the same signal characteristics for both networks, the single THING that is changed is the destination address. There is a problem with the quantity of data transmitted on the wire (and you can ask your mate about congestion, for example), but this is sensed in the switch/hub, the data is not sent on wire where it will cause a collision. The "collision" is detected in the switch/hub, and consist of too many packets sent to one device in a too short time. Each device has its limit to send data, each device can compute a certain number of packets per second. Give to it more, and here you have the congestion. Let's say there is an auto route, that allows 50 cars per minut, at a MAXIMUM SPEED of 50 kmph. If there are 60 cars per minut, you have congestion. The speed limit remains. There is no collission, there is only congestion.

CSMA/CD principles are applied in wireless networks, in shared media. If we have no shared media... No shared media, no collission and no collission detection.

You are right.

Solve : What affects bandwidth??

Answer»

I recently bought a Sprint Mobile Broadband aircard for my laptop and tested it at speedtest.net. I got speeds of roughly 500 kbps for both download and upload. Then I let my friend try it and he got 1300 kbps for both.

I run XP, he runs Vista. Neither of us have viruses or SPYWARE of any sort, nor were we running downloads. They both run on 1.66 Ghz. He has 1 gig of RAM, I have half.

So the question I'm posing is, what affects BANDWIDTH? The computer's specs? Defragmentation (I use bittorrent incessantly)? OS? Anything I might not be aware of?

Any insight into how I could GET my computer up to SPEED would be appreciated. At what time of the day did you and your friend try? Did you try them both on the same network? Did you run the test several times?

If you're running any file sharing PROGRAMS while testing, your speed results is naturally going to be lower than someone who doesn't run any file sharing programs and takes the same test.

Solve : adsl probs?

Answer»

i've been having probs lately with my adsl, ever since it was upgraded to 6mb, i get ping probs but my download rate seems to stay the same. Sometimes my ping stays at a stable 48 but most of the time it jumps to 150/200 and jumps from 98 - 200 ping. When i connect it says its CONNECTING as 5.5 - 6 mbps, but it doesnt seem that way.

I looked at my connection and noticed that i seem to be getting LOADS of bytes received and i wondered if this was the PROBLEM. Usually in the ratio 5-1 to bytes sent, like right now its 6,800,000 bytes received to 2,000,000 bytes sent, and my pings CURRENTLY jumpy. Just wondering if the problem is my adsl provider or if someone is spamming me out with packets or something, if anyone knows anything just enlighten me please ;(

ps . the WORST its ever been whils't downloading

Solve : Disconnected Wireless Internet...?

Answer»

I am having issues with my wireless internet. The wireless internet icon in the notification bar says I am not connected to the internet but I am. Actually I am writting this now and it says I am not connected. Also, every 3 - 10 minutes it DISCONNECTS and I have to repair the connection. It will still say not connected but it will work. Thanks!

XP Pro, 1gb ram, 1tb HD, 512DDR PCIe video, wireless - n hardware. what make/model is your router ?
just curious who's your isp ?
how many puters are on your network ?

how did you ORIGINALLY setup your connection and did you save it?What kind of router? Linksys 54gsv7. 2 computers and 1 printer (network).Try upgrading the firmware on your router, I used to have a lot of PROBLEMS with my linksys router as well. It was a WRT54G EU, though.

Contact Linksys technical support and explain them your problem. (+ make and version of router) they will most likely send you the latest firmware required. I have the lastest firmware, I have also contacted Linksys. The did not have an answer for me.

I am not overloading the router, the router and wireless adapter are the same brand and speed. I have updated the drivers for the wireless adapter. And your connection does not get interrupted while this error message OCCURS?

What kind of Internet Protection are you using?

Could it be another network device that is acting up? Firewire, for example. I have switched network adapters

I am using a hardware firewall (one I bought) I have disabled the router firewall.

if I am hardwired to the router it works GREAT so I know that the firewall is not the issue.

I dont get an message, it just starts to reconnect

Maybe it's DHCP that is set to renew far too often? I just checked it. It is not set to renew for a 24 hour period. Anymore ideas? When it says you disconnect, do you loose the Internet connection or does it keep functioning? If the latter is true, it could be a software/Windows problem.

Solve : ICS Trouble?

Answer»

Hey again guys,

My computer is connected to the family computer via a crossover cable. I enable ICS and all is well.

BUT....my friend STUFFED AROUND while i was at work, trying to do who knows what. Now when I enable ICS I get "An error occurred while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled. The specified service does not exist as an installed service."

Both comps are running XP Pro SP2. The host comp is connected to an ADSL modem via an ethernet cable (straight through network cable).

Ive TRIED uninstalling both network cards and re-installing them, tried bridging the connections.....same message though!

have you made sure the ICS is enabled on both computers? have you tried to system restore to an earlier date to fix the problem?

unlovedwarriorSmack your friend, then ask him what he did.

Solve : ethernet trouble?

Answer»

I have just bought i new computer and when i hook it up to the internet using the ethernet cable it say it has a connection but wont open ie or any other programme that requires the internet. When i install BT Boardband i get to the end of intalation and it says it cannot detect the router. I find this strange as when i take the pc down stairs and try it with the usb(usb cable is not long enough to go upstairs) it works ok and now i am using the ethernet cable with my old pc and it WORK fine but not with my new one. Any way i can make the ethernet work on my new one?

Its Windows xp sp2Configure the PC and router according to the PROVIDERS wishes. Don't use the software, it is more OFTEN annoying than it is useful.

Besides, be glad it doesn't open IE. Get Firefox ASAP. well it cant be the router as it is fine with my other computer so it must be the pc, what do ineed to change on it ?EITHER to accept DHCP (Obtain an IP address automatically) or fill out an IP address as specified by the network administrator.. Which is probably you. Both has to be done under Windows TCP/IP configuration. What kind of router do you have? Model?
You say that "downstairs" you have ANOTHER computer connected to the router, to the usb port. You want to use 2 computers at the same time? One connected to usb and one connected at ethernet port (lan port)?

Solve : Connection directly into modem???

Answer»

OS: Windows XP
MODEM: Motorola SURFboard SB5100

On my broadband modem i have noticed there is a spare ethernet cable connection at the BACK (it says in the manual I can use this or the USB connection to connect to my PC and surf the net, I am CURRENTLY using the USB connection.)

If I had a Ps2/Xbox could I connect it directly up to the modem, or would I have to buy a router which I would connect to the modem (and then connect ps2/xbox into the router) ?
You want Xbox Live, don't you?I THINK your modem has a built-in router if it offers you more than one connection. http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/products/SB5101/downloads/SB5101_UG_EN.pdf

See at page 46/72 (number page 40 in their manual). It SAIS you can connect one network device with usb and one with ethernet, BUT if your ISP agrees. So, if you have a single IP assigned by your ISP, you will need to buy a router and use it's NAT service. All home small routers do at LEAST that thing.ok thanks for the info guys
will try it out and see if it works

Solve : is it posible to make my dial up speed faster??

Answer»

hi there i have dial up on my computer which is 56kbps but only conects at 41kbps which is quite low it does vary but hasnot been past 41kbps is there any way to speed it up? cheersHi. I think there's a setting within your phone line which would likely control that. I don't think closing down programs would speed up the connection. My suggestion is to contact the Internet Service Provider (ISP) or order a faster internet.thanks for that i wont muck around with anything like that and just get faster internet [BROADBAND]Here's some good info on Slow Connection Speeds: http://help.expedient.com/dialup/slow_connection.shtml. Basically, I think there's not much you can do about it. So, if you can get broardband, do it. Solve : Network key problems?

Answer»

Hi

I am unable to access the internet. When I try to open a page, a pop-up says (for example) "www.google.com could not be opened".
I've recently gotten a new ISP but this problem occured with the previous one.

When I go to enter the new network key (an 8 character code (XPXD...)) it asks for a hexidecimal password.
I think a friend set one up for my last connection so people couldn't hack in, but now I can't get on my own internet!!

I'd be really grateful if someone out there could help.

I'm PRETTY good with computers (although no real wizz) so don't be afraid to suggest some more trickier ideas (WITHIN reason!!)

Thanks

Solve : Vista cannot see XP system on home network, please help.?

Answer»

Ok, I bit the bullet a COUPLE of months ago and bought a SYSTEM preconfigured with Windows Vista Home Premium. So FAR I have had little trouble with, what by all accounts, is a cranky OS. The only major hiccup I have found so far is that, while my old XP system can see my new Vista computer, the reverse is not true. I have followed all suggestions in Microsofts standard help section, but to no avail. Both have the same workgroup, and both have all firewalls and defender programs turned off while ATTEMPTING to set this up. Please help. Is the user that is on the XP box on the Vista box as well?

Alan <>< My computers are in the same room, but user, computer names, etc are totally different. I've networked plenty of xp, 2000, 98, etc machines. It's just Vista that is giving me a hard time.

Solve : Can 24 computers be networked to one PC??

Answer»

Is it possible to turn one computer into a server and network 24 computers to it?
All computers are running Windows XP pro, SP2.
I either heard or read that with this OS you can only have a max of 10 computers in one workgroup, is this true?
When you have a server, is this considered a "domain"? and if so, can a pc act as a server/domain?If you get a server (win server 2k or 2k3, Linux) then you can add an active directory to create a Domain which you can join 23+ computers to.To create a computer network you need a 24 ports switch (your case). Better 2 switches that combined will have more than 26 ports.
The 10 computers rule is: no more than 10 computers can connect to another computer with Windows, if the computer with Windows is not a Server version. You can have workgroups of tens of computers, it's ok. It's just no more than 10 computers can connect to other computer if that one does not have a Windows Server version. Also, in enterprise medium, it is not advisable to have large workgroups because of computer administration problems. When everyone watches for his computer, there will be users that know to properly work and administrate their computer and users that don't know much about computer administration. In case of large workgroups the sugestion is to buy a Windows Server and client access licences (there are 2 cases of client access licences, I will not explain further) and set up a windows active directory. After that you need a network administrator that will centralize the network administration, the other users will have only to work and will not be bothered by computer and network administration.
You can have a server without being part of a windows domain.
It does not matter if it is a pc or a super computer acting as a "server".
The server is the computer that has the data which should be shared to another computer (hence, the server role changes according to situation), the client computer is the computer that needs the data from another computer (from "server").

What you said with workgroup biger than 10 computers not allowed is false.
What do you want to do?Wow! Great information. Thank you for sharing. All computers at present are networked via a 20 port Cisco switch. Given that this network is being done on a shoestring, we do not have the resources to (ideally) purchase Windows Server & client access licenses. You mention there could be workgroups of tens of computers which leads to my next question. Can the computer we are using that is acting as a server (Teacher computer) be part of more than one workgroup? The Teacher computer is where the security dongle is attached for authorized/unlocked test administrations. And there is another computer based program installed on a flash drive connected to the Teacher computer where data is accessed and written. So, all 24 computers ultimately must access the Teacher computer when either of the computer based testing programs are being administered. Right now we are having to alternate computers (reading & listening tests) to not exceed the 10 simultaneous connections to the Teacher computer for reading tests. I REALIZE a server is the best OPTION, it's just not an option for our school at present. Only one workgroup. Only 10 concurrent connections for any Windows XP.

I don't recall exactly, but if I REMEMBER well, if you are using an administrator account you may have more than 10 simultaneous connections to "server". This is a dangerous option, the local administrator account has complete rights over the computer (local administrator account for that server I mean).

To solve you problem, you may try to use a proxy program. Or a NAT server (it's the same thing for your problem) like ICS. Other NAT servers... You may use some Linux options. You may use some proxy servers for free. I will mention one proxy server that is simple to set up: Jana Server. But you may find others.

This adds some complication to your network... But you may try it. I do not know what application do you use for reading and listening, what type of files do you use. You will have to use 2 different subnets. Better 2 different networks, let's say 192.168.2 and 192.168.3. I reffer to logical networks, not physiscal networks. Your cabling solution doesn't change much, you will need 1 more network card and a cross over cable (I assume you have an Ethernet network). But you will change some IPs, you will install a proxy server/NAT server (in linux it's a "masquerading" server).

Do you have some computers network knowledge? IPs, networks, subnet masks? You will have to put 2 network cards in a computer; you will assign IPs for 2 different networks, you will install a proxy server or you will activate ICS on that computer. The Teacher computer has to have internet access? The other computers in network? This further complicates my "sollution".

The costs? A free proxy server (hence 0 price) or ICS (already included with Windows), a cross over cable (a few bucks) and a new computer network card (another few bucks). You will solve the problem with 30 dollars, if the application you use supports NAT traversal or using a proxy server.
But... I need more details before I will explain further.
So: what application do you use? What are the network requirements for the networked computers? Internet access on all of them? They ar part of a greater computer network?

Another simple sollution, which involves NAT, is to use a router. I will tell you further if I find more information from you. It's too large the subject, and I would not like to write here THINGS that won't help you. I have to look forward to see if any type of connection is counted for that 10 limit. I know about network browsing, but I am not sure that any type of connection will add.

[Later EDIT] Any tcp/udp connection will add . I'm reading further. [/Later edit]Hello! and thank you for your detailed response/reply. I'd like to answer some of your questions...the assessment center is independently networked from our school's LAN and has no Internet connection. It is completely "stand-alone," so to speak. Therefore, without Internet access, the proxy server idea while a good one will not work for this set-up.

At present, all computers are running Windows XPpro, SP2. They are networked with Cat 5 Ethernet cables using a Cisco 20 port switch. I will add a 4 port hub to complete networking all 24 computers. The primary software application used for administering the assessments is written using SQL Server Express Edition which establishes the client/server relationship without much effort.

I realize all computers can be considered within the same workgroup, however, only 10 at any one given time can have simultaneous connection to the host computer. At this point, I believe we will have to endure the expense and purchase a server application program, such as Windows 2000 Server. I came across one over eBay that includes 25 CALs for a little over $200. Someone also mentioned Windows Standard Server Edition and that it only costs about $80, but the information I found on it was that it only supports up to 4 CPUs on one server. Am I not understanding correctly?

In any case, I have learned allot from everyone while trying to arrive at the best arrangement to serve our needs and fit our pocketbook. If you have any other suggestions/recommendations, I am always open for more!

Are you from Holland? Interesting question/reply. The answer is no.....not sure why you asked. In any case, I am just trying to accomplish a task without a great deal of expense. However, it is looking more and more like we will have to purchase a server application program to enable all 24 computers to connect simultaneously to the host/teacher computer station. If you buy a Windows Server version, all 24 computers will be able to connect to the computer on which you installed the Windows Server. On any computer that has Windows XP installed, the 10 connections limit remains. So, some tickling with the settings will need to be made for that application. Most probably the "teacher's" computer will be the server, with Windows Server operating system on it. It depends on the application used, it depends if it is well documented and presents that case in documentation or not.
You need to buy a switch (avoid hubs) with at least 6 ports. Why? Because you have to connect those 2 switches, and so one port on each switch will be needed to connect the 2. 1 port on Cisco + 1 port on the other = 2 ports; you need 24 ports for computers => 24+2 it's the minimum number of ports you need to have. My advice? Buy a switch with at least 8 ports, better 16, ideally 24. Diference of price between 8-16-24? Minuscule. Not able to see it with bare eye Personally, I would go with a 16 switch port.

Why are you disturbed by the 4 processor restriction? You won't buy such a server (hardware) anyway, it is very-very expensive, it's price starts at a few thousands dollars/euro. That restriction applies for the number of processors that the local machine has (the computer on which you will install the Windows Server version), it does not matter how many computers will connect by network to it and how many processors do they have.OK, a server it is. The principal has agreed to purchase MS Windows 2000 Server with the needed 24 client access licenses (CALs). I was not aware that we could acquire this product at an educational cost for as little as $80 and a little over $5 per CAL. So for just over $200, our problem is solved with the exception of adding the additional switch, or 2 hubs to complete the 24 networked computers.

Thank you again for all your help. I have learned allot!Maybe I was not clear with a thing: AVOID HUBS!!! BUY A SWITCH OR 2. PLEASE AVOID HUBS!!!

Solve : FTP Trouble?

Answer»

Hello All,

I have just switched hosting SERVICES and cannot upload any files to this service. The problem is:

When I try to upload a file, the upload will START and get about 10K into the TRANSFER, then it just stops. I can watch the transfer rate slowly decaying (1.4...1.3...1.2...) and the transfer doesn't show any more progress.

hResRead: 0, hResWrite:80042003
Error reading response from server.

Downloading is fine...multiple files, multiple folders, no problem.

I have talked with my hosting service, and there's no problem on their end and same with ISP.

Ok so here is the wierd part. when my brother tried his laptop on the same LAN he can upload fine. If he connects through the wireless network he can also upload with no problem. He can absolutely no issues.

also I am still able to upload files to my old hosting provider with no problems.

I thought it was my router blocking it. The router log showed that it was blocking requests from the new server i was trying to connect to. I bypassed the router straight to the broadband connection and still no joy.

Also my old machine which is also on the network(which was recently upgraded to xp sp2) cannot connect to the server also. Same errors

ive tried port forwarding also no luck with that.

So at this stage, im about to crack up. Some one please tell me what to do.

Thanks Did you use a software firewall to block FTP? No, I have all firewalls disabled. Even when they were turned on, i was able to ftp to other sitesAnd your brother can upload to the same service you are using?

Is there a difference in the FTP software settings on either machines? exactly the same settings. both using FIREFTP on firefox. I cant use the file manager on my hosting either, yet my brother can.Is FireFTP a Firefox plug-in? Yes, but it wont work with WS_FTP PRO or ftp through IE7So you get the same problem in IE? yesHave you installed the latest NIC drivers and Windows updates ?yes all is up to dateApart from a reformat, I'm out of ideas. Try booting into Safe Mode and do an upload. Sounds like you've done all the right things but something is keeping the upload from happening in a timely manner.

Yes, but it wont work with WS_FTP PRO or ftp through IE7
So, you have WS_FTP PRO? Have you tried just using it alone to upload to the server? I use WS_FTP PRO and I'm wondering why you aren't using it to connect directly to the server. No BROWSER needs to be involved in this.

Solve : Wireless connection software seems to have disappeared?

Answer»

I recently had my hard drive erased, after a VIRUS meltdown. We have it up and running again now; EVERYTHING is working fine, and I can get a local area connection, but I can no longer get a wireless connection. The computer icon that used to show up in the taskbar, that shows if a connection is available, no longer shows up.

I used to get a signal from our buffalo airstation, which is connected directly to another computer in the house. Now I no longer get a signal from that, or the side signal I sometimes picked up from neighbors. There seems to be no wireless connection whatsoever available on my computer.
(Acer Aspire 3000)

Could it be that the capability for wireless connecting was destroyed when my hard drive was wiped? If so, how can I fix it? And, if not.... what is the problem here?
Try rebuilding your wireless network.

Your wireless software needs to know the SSID and shared key phrase. IF you haven't got those written down and/or configured PROPERLY you're NEVER going to be able to get on your wireless network. Could I get that from the computer that the buffalo station is hooked up to?
If so....how?

I appreciate the help, from you and anybody else who'd care to jump in.
Do you still have the manuals for the equipment? It MAY be on the installation CD in .pdf format.

Solve : Static IP...?

Hi I'm just trying to change my IP address. My ISP said if I keep my modem off for 4 hours it should change but it didn't. I just switched to a static IP and I'm wondering if that might have anything to do with it. Any info on that or any other reason it might not be changing would be appreciated. Solve : Best troubleshooters pls help with win2k wireless is connected but no access?

Answer»

My new (gifted) WIN2K pc with a WavePlus WP1200 802.11b PCI card #2 cannot connect to my router with encryption – if I select another NETWORK that is not protected, I can get online. The frustrating thing is that with my network WEP encrypted, I can connect with a 50% signal, then I GO to the internet, I get a server not found message. My old laptop running win98 with a IEEE 802.11g cardbus adapter gets online every TIME with no problems. Please help troubleshoot. Thanks.A "WavePlus" network card does not inspire confidence. The fact that it is a B card shows the technology may be dated.

What kind of encryption? The card does not support WPA, so I've tried WEP with both 128 and 64bit encryption; with each type, status says connected with a 50% or sometimes even an 80% signal strength, but no access to the net. Has this card ever worked correctly? What happens if you turn off the encryption and try to connect?

If all else fails, replace the wireless card.

Alan <>< It connects FINE to an un-encypted network - I am returning the card.

Thanks.

Solve : phone connection?

Answer»

i live in a caravan miles from anyone , i do not have a land line and i would like to use my phone (motorola v70-not bluetooth) to connect my laptop to the internet, i have windows vista installed in my laptop , is this possible and if so how do i go about it

thanx.......ronnieYou'll need the relevant cable to PHYSICALLY connect the phone to the computer, which are available, I'm sure, CHECK e-Bay, or go to a phone shop and ask them.

Then you'll need the software, and drivers, which should come with the cables, and you'll probably want to make sure your mobile service PROVIDER LETS you do this, and also how much it's going to cost you.

I'd give your service provider a ring first, just so you don't buy the cables and find out it's not possible, or ridiculously EXPENSIVE.

Solve : internet gateway incoming connections?

Answer»

Hi everyone:
We have a quite old PII/350Mhz 256Mb RAM computer with WINDOWS 2000 Server (automatic updated) paid AVG connected full time to Internet using an ADSL service which GIVES 5 ip addresses. A late friend configured it with a couple of modems and the only use of that machine is to serve as Internet gateway for two USERS who CONNECT via the after mentioned modems receiving always a real ip (one of the 5).
The system and configuration worked perfect for years until last week when service provider decided to change ip addresses.
I was able to change the computer's ip and it surfs the internet using any of the new 5 ip.
Then I tried to change the ip the machine serves to the remote modem users and I thought that changing at incoming connections will be fine. But remote users continue to get the old /useless ip.
I need help how to change to the new ones.
Thanks in advance
NB
You have DHCP and NAT activated. You have to make changes there. I would check NAT settings first (on the "old computer" with Windows 2000).

Solve : PS3 Connection Issue - Concerning Router?

Answer»

I have an issue with connecting my PS3 online. We have 2 computers, both running off the same wired router, one downstairs and one upstairs. My PS3 is upstairs in my bedroom.

Basically, we WANT a wireless router but we don't want to affect the current connection. Is there any way of having a wireless router which my ps3 can connect to without taking out the wired router thus affecting my dads upstairs computer?

Thanks in advance.

By the way, my wired router is a Netgear Cable/DSL Web Safe Router Gateway RP614v2.You can buy a Wireless Access Point and connect it to your Router. Quote from: Raptor on April 28, 2007, 10:41:32 AM

You can buy a Wireless Access Point and connect it to your Router.

Thanks for the quick response.

Is a wireless access point the same as a router. Also, would this affect the computer upstairs?

Thanks in advance. No, it is a SORT of extension that ALLOWS you to make a wired router wireless. I think it plugs in to one of the wired PORTS.

Example of WAPs.I have the exact same problem.
I have a verry LOW connection and most of the time it is to low to connect but when I'm connected and I start to play online My PS3 stays connected.
How is this possible?
Will I be able to connect everytime if I buy a wirless router?
Normally it should be but I want to be shure.
And our network is protected by linksys then I will have to accep this new router don't I?

Solve : Vanshing PCs on xp/2k workgroup?

Answer»

Hey guys,

Recently i moved my network to a new location and i b uilt a win2k box into a NAS/FTP pesudo thing with a raid1 setup. This would be great if it worked...On a WINDOWS workgroup, compromised of 2 winxp pro and 1 windows home and the 2k box, all is working FINE besides the 2k box. After i set up the 2k box it showed fine on network places/pcs but any attempts to connect to it failed, via name or IP. Even to shares setup on it. Now, it's vanished and it can't be seen on any of the XPs, nor can it see any of the XPs, it only sees its SELF in the workgroup.

I have a VNC cilent on it and i can connect to it that way, it responds to ping and i hosted a counterstrike server on it and the XPs found it in lan browse...so it's working. Also, i just noticed when i view the entire network on the 2k box, it is showing two workgroups, one the actual workgroup and the other workgroup is named workgroup with it as member, even THOUGH it network id properties it shows itself as a member of the right workgroup. Come sunday i think i will rebuild a new workgroup and see what happens, but untill then any input is much thanked.Actually i think i will naviage to a domain to save me any more of these headaches, but ideas on how to fix this are still welcomed!Try changing the workgroup on the 2K box to ANYTHING, reboot, then change it to the workgroup you want it to be a member of. In the past I've found that sometimes that works, though I don't know why

Solve : My Network Places?

Answer»

I have had my PC's networked for several months and have not had any trouble. I use a Netgear WPN 824 router on a SpeedStream DSL modem. Everything is wired.

I just noticed that when I go to My Network Places, the shared folders on the PC that I am USING appear under "LOCAL Network," but the folders that are being shared on the OTHER PC's appear under "Internet."

What is up with this?

I am not 100% SURE, but I don't think it was like this before. It sure does not LOOK right to me. I think all shared folders were under Local Network.

Any IDEAS?

They want to teach you how to spell, etc., not download crappola.

Not being an uber prick here, but, if you're going to be all "teach you how to spell", don't you think correct grammar would be a start?

But the reason schools, and other public services won't let you use p2p software is because they don't want you downloading stuff. Simple as, really.

Also, if you downloaded something illegal, using their connection, they are liable. That's the main reason why people should be a lot tighter on their home WIRELESS networks.

Basically, it BOILS down to them not wanting you to use their server space, and their bandwidth to download your *censored* teen *censored* pr0n.

Right click on the network connection, then scroll down to TCP/IP, click properties, and make sure "Obtain IP automatically" and "Obtain DNS automatically" are chosen, then disable (right click), then wait a few moments, and enable it (again right click), open an internet browser.

If you're still having problems open Internet Explorer, go into tools, INET options, connections tab, never dial a connection, then into LAN settings, auto detect, OK, into advanced tab, RESET all defaults, OK. Then close and re-open IE...any luck?

Still having issues?

my pc OS is win xp sp2, windows firewall is on, antivius is AVG free edition.
Router is D-Link 4 port (comfirm the model no later when i'm home)
thank!This from Dyndns.com:
"Can I use your services for a server behind a cable/DSL router?

Yes. You'll have to set up port forwarding on your router; see your documentation for instructions. Then just point your hostname(s) at the router's external IP as normal, and it should handle sending the right traffic to your internal server. Please do not ask the support department to help you with your router-specific configuration, as we are UNABLE to support third-party devices. If your router does not have a built-in client for our services, or if you're using the Custom DNS service, you MAY need a software update client."

Solve : No Net Connection?

Answer»

Hello, for some reason my cable modem refuses to work on my other computer. and for some reason i cant connect wirelessly either (Not really WORRIED about connecting wirelessly though.)

Computer Specs:
-Gateway 510 Series
-WinXP SP1
-Pen 4 2.80Ghz
-512mb RAM
-NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200
-Adware/Spyware/Virus Protection used regularly are Ad-aware, NOD32 and Norton AV 2003.
-Cable Modem: Scientific Atlanta Webstar DPC2100 Series

i first experinced this problem on monday after i left my computer on hibernate while burning a dvd overnight using Nero (ive done this many many times before and i never got this problem) and after i WOKE it up out of hibernation my net connection wasnt working. Apps couldnt connect to the net or any games. the browser im using is mozilla firefox the error im getting is "Server not found".

also i was getting weird errors that i never seen from programs that i use reguarly. In Media Player Classic (A video player similar to quicktime) when i tried to start it up i get an error that says "AFXSocketInit Failed!". in Logitech Desktop Messenger (Software that came with my Logitech wireless mouse that reminds me when a new version of the software is out) the error says "Sockets Init Failed."

i'm pretty sure its not the modem cause im using the same modem right now on this computer and it works fine.

i also tried restarting my modem and local area connection in Network connections (BTW, in network connections when i click on the local area connection it says invalid ip adress). i tried flushing the dns and i tried updating modem drivers.

when i tried to renew the ip it gives me an error. something about "RPC service not available". now i know that RPC is Remote procedure call, so i opened up services and it was disabled. when i tried to enable it , it gives me an error. "Error 1068: the dependency or group failed to start". When i try to enable those services i get the same error.

this is the list of services that wont start up:
-RPC
-Remote Access Connection Manager
-Telephony

now this select group of services have been disabled for sometime now before i start getting this problem, but my net connection was fine then, so i said "If it aint broke don't fix it". but now its broke, so i need to fix it

so im think its the services that are messed up and the only way to fix that is to reinstall windows. but i want to reinstall windows only as a last resort. so if there are any other ways i can fix this without having to reinstall windows then you're help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance. You can do a repair INSTALL if you have a real Windows CD.

By the way, why no SP2 on that machine?yes i do have a real windows xp cd, the one that came with the machine, ill try that.

and i dont have SP2 because i decided to hold off on upgrading to the new version. i heard from other people that when they upgraded it caused the blue screens and many other problems LIKE messing up bios, registery keys and what not. then again this was when SP2 first came out so the major bugs probably have been fixed.

if i do have to end up reinstalling windows then ill probably upgrade to sp2 along with it.Quote

Unfortunately you have been given bad information from your friends...the machines that had problems were less than 4% of ALL XP machines...

And since it has been out since August of 2004 i would think things have calmed down by now anyway...i see, i guess ill upgrade then.

anyways a system restore fixed it. dont know why i didnt think of it earlier

i dont have socket error anymore either, seemed system restore fixed that too.

but the "Remote Access Auto Connection Manager", "Remote Access Connection Manager" and "Telephony" services still arnt starting, im getting the same error: "Error 1068: the dependency or group failed to start"

these 2 services (among others) are needed to start up Internet Connection Sharing (which i need on so i can share the net connection using my router). also under properties in my local area connection there isnt even the option to allow internet connection sharing:

as opposed to how to look like

im thinking ill still probably have to reinstall windows to get those services to work, but if anyone knows of a way to fix it without having to, then you're help would be appreciated. From the MothershipYes, i know how to setup an internet connection but as i said in my previous post i cant enable the internet connection sharing because the services wont start up.

thanks for trying to help though.

so ive decided to install SP2 because it might fix my problem, but should i try reinstalling SP1a and then install SP2 or just install SP2 over my current version of SP1 Build 2600?SP2 does not require anything previous to install, except XP itself.

Solve : Networking with Vista.?

Answer»

Hi All,
PLEASE could someone help me out here, I'm going mad very fast trying to get this sorted out.

For many years I have had a Desktop PC running XP HOME.
I then bought myself a Laptop with XP home on it, this I set up with a wireless network using a NETGEAR router, and it has worked fine for me.

Recently I bought a new Laptop with Win Vista Basic on it which I want the family to use.

BUT I have tried everything I know to get the Vista laptop running on wireless internet.
My Vista laptop tells me that it has seen the NETGEAR router (it flashes on the task bar) But when I click on it, the password WINDOW comes up (I have it Protected) I type in the password, then a window comes up "can't connect to NETGEAR, please try again", this happens everytime and I just cant get onto the internet.

I would be most grateful if someone out there could tell me what I'm doing wrong, or is it VISTA?

I have been told to look for -: "Wireless Zero Config" using Services.msc
I have also been told to look for "wzcsvc" using Regedit.

Neither of these entries exist on my Vista Laptop, is this the reason I'm unable to network it?

I look forward to seeing a reply from some kind person, that will get me out of this hole I have dug for myself when I foolishly bought a LAptop with Vista on it.

I am neither a beginner or expert at computing, just in the middle so please be gentle with me.

Hope all this info helps.
Regards
bribow.

Try disabling the FIREWALL & CONNECTING. If that doesn't work, temporarily disable your security on the router and try again.

Alan <>< Chances are, if you were to buy a new laptop with Windows XP on it, you would have the same problem.

On my Netgear router, I have a Wireless Settings>Access List feature
If you have Access List enabled, disable it (and then add the Vista laptop, and add the MAC Address)

Solve : Win2k will not let me configure TCP/IP?

Answer»

If this is a new installation it would seem to me like you either used the wrong drivers or something went wrong while installing them.

Are you sure you have the latest drivers and how did you install them? Did you perhaps DISABLE the NIC? I have the drivers for the motherboard and installed them "normally". The NIC is enabled, when I unplug the network cable the bubble pops up and says network cable unplugged. COULD there possibly be something missing in the 2k CD?Sounds to me like the drivers aren't properly installed. How many NIC's are present?Just one, in the device manager. The thing tells me the drivers are working properly. So let me get this straight;

You installed a previously known to be working NIC.
You are using a previously known to be working RJ-45 CAT-5 (5E, 6 etc) cable.
You are using drivers that you have previously used as well.

Yes
Yes
and Yes.
Replace the NIC card...they are relatively inexpensive.

Remember to remove the old one and it's drivers and install the new drivers. Here's the deal. I have harddrive 1 in the machine that we use everyday that works perfect. I bought harddrive 2 to replace h/d 1 because it seemed like 1 was going to die. When I set up h/d 2 this is when I ran into the problem. I do not run both h/d's at the same time, I unplug 1 and run 2 to work on it. So I have the same HARDWARE for both h/d's.All the software and the correct drivers have to be installed on both hard drives for it to work properly...check your network settings from drive 1 and ADJUST them accordingly on drive 2

They should all be identical if this is to work.Har29, when you UNINSTALL the network card, do you uninstall the drivers first, shut down the computer, change the network card to another pci slot (I assume) and then start computer and reinstall the network card?

(If you want to skip some part... Let's say physical change of the pci slot: after driver uninstall, restart computer in safe mode and check again in Hardware to not having any reference to your network card).

Hi I've tried looking for information on how to create a peer-to-peer wireless network with file and internet sharing.

Both computers have XP Pro SP2 and a Wireless Card

I DONT have a wireless router as yet and want to connect the other computer via ip sharingWireless CARDS only and no router? I don't think so. You need that key bit of hardware. Quote from: GX1_Man on May 15, 2007, 03:50:02 AM

What about Ad Hoc? Surely you can ICS over an Ad Hoc network?Ad Hoc wireless connection, Sid is right.
ICS - OSI level 3 and above; wireless - OSI level 1 and 2 (mostly 1). I am confident he will be able to set up ICS. Of course, it depends on the IP received from ISP, but if there are problems there exist free proxy servers/programs.So whats your suggestion guys?Quote from: viking on May 15, 2007, 07:42:12 AM

Solve : "The Internet (2)"?

Answer»

This is something I have been WONDERING about... There is a connection on here called The Internet 2. Sometimes it's there and sometimes it's not but right now it's there and it says it's connected. it says somethin about WAN Miniport (L2TP). What is it? thanksDid you ever set up more than one connection at one time (eg: one for work, one for home)?
Is your main connection a WiFi (WAN) or a ETHERNET connection? Sure it's not LPT2 ? ?

This would be a network printer setup possibly...How about a clue as to the hardware? Where is this icon LOCATED? On the desktop or a folder?Quote from: GX1_Man on May 15, 2007, 03:53:10 AM

Solve : pci adapter workstation ethernet lan connection?

Answer»

My father built a computer an put in a pci adapter workstation ethernet LAN connection. Does he still need a NIC in order to connect to the internet? My understanding of the PCI adapter is it is used in lan connection where one computer is connected directly to the internet. Correct? What?!

Did he install a PCI NIC? Sounds like that's what you're trying to describe.

Tell you what, go to DEVICE manager (control panel, system, hardware) and look under "network adapters".

List what's there for a start...

And no, you are incorrect. An NIC is for connecting to a network, any network, not just a LAN with ICS enabled. In fact, it could be a stand-alone network with no internet connection at all.

Now what is it you're trying to achieve with this anyways, maybe we can help there too?Quote from: fsuwolf on May 15, 2007, 05:01:45 PM

computer an put in a pci adapter workstation ethernet lan connection.

Please tell me what this means??

Did it come in a box? Just jot down what the box has written all over it.Quote from: fsuwolf on May 15, 2007, 06:20:09 PM
The box says DYNEX "ethernet network workstation ethernet lan connection"
and 10/100mps fast ethernet PCI ADAPTER.
When I plug in his DSL line in then log onto the internet, I get nothing , when I go into CMD and type in IPCONFIG no IP address shows up. When I go into control panel network CONNECTIONS it has the following 1395 adapter #2 that is all. It should have local AREA network in this area as well. I have come to the conclusion that the PCI adapter is not a PCI NIC card for a wired network.

Hold on...what?!

Look, it is an NIC. Simple as. Are the drivers installed correctly, and are you plugging it in correctly?

What are you trying to achieve, and what have you already got in place?Quote from: fsuwolf on May 15, 2007, 05:01:45 PM
We just hooked the computer to his DSL line and cannot connect to the internet.

What kind of modem are you using, because as far as I'm aware, a DSL line doesn't just plug straight into an Ethernet PCI NIC.In fact, let's start from scratch.

Build up computer,
Get computer working,
Physically install PCI NIC (which believe it or not is what you have)
Install the current up-to-date drivers from the manufacturer for your OS

Now stop.

Is this computer going to be the one with the internet connection?

If so:

Setup the ISP software, including drivers for modem/hub/router.

Connect modem/router/hub to computer.

Go into network connections, and make sure "Allow other computers to share this internet connection" is enabled (ICS).

Connect other computers to the ICS computer via Ethernet.

Thank you very much for any help you can give.

I had a similar problem at work when installing a hub. It was on an XP machine though, so I don't know if this is going to help, but the basic fix was:

Make sure the IP's are assigned automatically.

Control Panel, Network Connections, right click, PROPERTIES, TCP/IP Check box, properties button, Obtain IP Automatically, Obtain DNS server Automatically, OK, OK

Did that work? No? Carry on (this was how I got walked-through earlier today from the help-desk chap, if it helps great if not...meh.)

right click the network connection, disable, wait a bit (10 seconds), enable,

Working YET? No, read on...

Open your internet browser,
let's say IE: tools, internet options, connections tab, never dial a connection, advanced tab, restore defaults, apply, ok

Firefox works similarly. Did this help?Quote from: Sid on May 09, 2007, 04:50:31 PM

Thank you very kindly for all the help, well - would you beleave it turned out to be somthing so simple that I could kick myself, after working on the laptop for more then three weeks making sure all the addressings and proxys were right, it was suggested I type in my IP in the http line, this brought up all the info on my 'Westel 357 Router, and when I looked over all the data, I noticed one set of numbers I had never seen before, it was the WEP Key number, I entered that number and my laptop instantly connected to the net, live and learn.
I hope this information helps others whwo may have a similar problem.
Thank you again everyone.

Solve : My laptop can no longer detect my internet connection!!?

Answer»

Can anyone help? My wireless internet has been working fine for the last 3 years and all of a sudden the computer says it cannot connect the internet. The router is still working, my broadband provider says the internet connection is fine and suggest it's something to do with drivers/drives? on my LAPTOP - any suggestions?

P.S: The laptop can DETECT the wireless networks of the neighbours but not my own!Have a look in the device manager (control panel, system, hardware) are there any X, !, or ?'s?

How techie are you, and what have you already tried to RESOLVE this issue? Can you connect to your router with other wireless computers?
Unplug the router for a minute and then try connecting again. Sometimes all the router needs is a little cool down time.
What kind of CARD is it? What kind of laptop?I had this problem before. But as I am not a very proficient user of the computer I will just tell you what I did without the technical terms. The thing that was causing the problem in my case was that someone new moved in next door and they also had wireless connection set up and my laptop was picking up on that signal which was stronger. But since I had no access to that router, it wasn't allowing me to get on the internet. What I did to solve the problem was to disable all other wireless connection on my list of wireless connections and only keep MINE from my router open. I made sure there was incription enabled and my laptop started to work fine... well after about 3 restarts (I don't know why this helped but it all of sudden worked after about 3 restarts). I don't know if this helps at all but good luck! And if that is indeed the problem then you could change your broadcast channel on your router.
