Solve : Network Users? |

Answer» I have a wireless network set up in my house. Right now it is configured for open access and I dont want to turn on encryption. How can I monitor who is using my network/ logged on? Also, can I kick them off my network at my discretion? I have a wireless network set up in my house. Right now it is configured for open access and I dont want to turn on encryption. How can I monitor who is using my network/ logged on? Also, can I kick them off my network at my discretion? Umm...what hardware have you got? This should be good...Quote Only one person lives close enough to me to use my router, I do not care if they do. Mind giving me your creditcard number, then? Ive got a linksys router, I can be more specific later, if necessary. And on another note: I'm sorry, but I'm not very fluent in sarcasm.A linksys router? There are more then one linksys routers. But white the one I have you can just type the ipaddress of the router in your Internet browser to GET to the security settings. Then you can click the advanced tap and click wireless. Then you click the "edit access list" tap and then you should have the MAC filter settings. Jonas Why exactly do you not want to ENCRYPT your DATA...? If you do not secure your network, you cannot control who uses it, nor complain about it when they do. |

Solve : help me!!! my laptop cannot connect to the internet!!? |
|
Answer» im having trouble connecting my laptop to the net via the ethernet cable....i have tried everything!! my network adapter is functioning fine and i have brought a new ethernet cable...i am only getting wireless....i am at my wits end!!!! I'm having the same problem and have tried vertually everything. My dial up doesnt work either saying that it cant find the server. Umm, don't Hi-Jack, create a new thread.Quote from: honeyrose on May 15, 2007, 08:12:20 AM im connecting it via a modem and ethernet cable. i have my isp address but i cant connect to the net....it keeps on saying 'unsucessful'......could there be a fault with the network cable thats attached to the modem?? You say you're getting wireless?? Is it your own wireless network, or someone else's? Anyways, are there any errors (X, ! or ?'s) in device manager (control panel, system, hardware)? Are the IP's/DNS set to be obtained automatically? (Network connections, Right click on the network you're having problems with, properties, scroll box TCP/IP, click, properties box) Is the cable plugged in the correct socket on the modem, and on your computer? And who is the ISP?Quote from: honeyrose on May 15, 2007, 08:12:20 AM im connecting it via a modem and ethernet cable. i have my isp address but i cant connect to the net....it keeps on saying 'unsucessful'......could there be a fault with the network cable thats attached to the modem?? I don't understand the part "i am only getting wireless". So... What are your network equipments? A modem, connected through ethernet cable to your provider's equipment? Your computer is connected directly to modem (through cable, wireless?) or do you have a switch/router and you connect through it? I am trying to guess what are you using and how are you using that. Also, your Internet Service Provider gave you some advices about how to connect a computer/network to his equipment? I do not want to overwhelm you with the informations I ask; just try to tell us as much as you are aware of and I will try to find a sollution or to direct you to find a solution. Do you have your isp address? Are you talking about tcp/ip properties? Another question: if you ask your provider for some help, they will charge your bill? It will be easier for you to solve the problem if they will help you a little. Please post here the full error message that you receive when you try to browse the internet. i keep on getting a 169 ip address!! something wrong with the hardware i think!! wireless is already INSTALLED with the laptop !! im really starting to hate MODERN technology! im trying to connect via modem, which has a white cable running through it and the ethernet cable is attached to my laptop...but it keeps on saying 'unidentified network. access: limited connectivity!! *facepalm* its like living in the dark ages If it's a cable between the modem and your laptop then you are not using wireless technology to connect to internet. And that 169 ip address says that your cable or network adapter might be faulty, your laptop cannot comunicate with the modem (what model of modem?). Or maybe you changed the network interface card (NIC) and your modem does not recognize the "new" NIC as being legitimate. In this case it's better to phone your isp to UPDATE your data. They will PROBABLY need the new MAC address of the network card (they could ask you the MAC address of your laptop, it means the same thing, but the MAC really belongs to NIC). Your modem has a few leds on it. Does it show it has connection? Another problem, which I didn't think about: what is your NIC MAC address? (MAC address is also called physical address). If it is something like FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF and you did not set it up so, then your NIC is surely faulty. Instead of FFs you have to have something much more "random", all the groups should not be the same.yeah, thanks mate. i thought that it might be the network adapter. im taking it to the computer shop to get it checked out!!! after that im not going anywhere near technology.................i seem to set them off. thanks for your help!! if the problem doenst get solved im going to come back and moan on and on and on........... Quote from: honeyrose on May 18, 2007, 04:16:25 AM if the problem doenst get solved im going to come back and moan on and on and on........... We will comfort you  |

Solve : Networking Problems? |
|
Answer» Hey, Hey Pomeroy, Just "Rob" is fine. Quote from: Atrias on April 03, 2007, 03:15:57 AM The cable I'm using is the one that came with my ethernet cards that always worked before. How will I know if its a crossover cable or not? I'm pretty sure it won't be. XP is fussy about this (and so it should be). You'll need to buy a crossover cable or use a hub/switch in between the two PCs. Both are fairly inexpensive and involve no further configuration (provided it's a bog-standard "dumb" switch/hub).Connector cables on the lead are all different colours, by that reckoning it is a crossover cable. This still puts me back at square one hmm.... I have a hub that I can use potentially... will it work with a USB modem? Just tried to configure the hub but theres no USB on it... guess that won't work (For your information its a Belkin 4-Port Router) Any other avenues we could investigate? Thanks for everyone's help and Rob, sorry about the name thing, I thought your Messageboard name was Pomeroy, didn't see the Rob hehe!I meant use a hub between the two PCs. I still think you've got a straight through cable there, by the way, not a crossover. Don't worry about the name. I've been called worse. If I can't plug in the USB modem to the hub will the ICS still work the same way it would normally? I really don't know about the cable, it's "different colours from left to right" as suggested by patio... it worked perfectly on the same network before everything stopped working, I don't understand how \ why when I'm trying to do exactly the same thing as I did before now it work work!Try this setup: Have your host Computer have the Usb modem hooked up to it, then run a cable from the Ethernet port in that computer to the WAN port in the router. Then plug in your other computer. M1CH431, thanks for the advice, I tried that setup myself but in the Configuration ran through on the Driver \ Setup CD it says that its not plugged in correctly (assumably because the modem is not plugged in correctly) I will test that set-up again and see if theres anything else that might be the problem, I'm going to test and see if I can network and ICS between my current client and an aditional separate computer to see upon which computer the fault actually lies too... Thanks everyone for your help, we're getting there slowly I hope! This is sort of shooting into the dark but try that set up but make sure you have the connection set to share. You do this by going to My Network Places, then view connections, then right click your network card and go to properties. Then at the top click advanced then click the check box that says: Allow other network users to connect through this internet connection. My Internet Connection is definitely set up to allow other users to connect through it... Is that what you mean or do you mean my Local AREA Connection should be set up to allow other users to connect through it... Since my last post I tried changing which computer is the host and which is the client and I get the same problem: Whichever computer is the host wont have an address automatically assigned to it by the DHCP server, whichever is the client automatically gets an address assigned by the DHCP server... However I can ping the client from the host but not the host from the client... (Just to refresh you all) Still getting absolutely nowhere with this and its driving me insane... Thanks again everyone! When you use ICS you are OBLIGED to use addresses from the 192.168.0 class. The multihomed computer (the one on which you set up the ICS) has 2 network cards; the one that connects to internet (router/modem) will have the IP settings that were told you by your ISP. The other one has the address 192.168.0.1. First thing to do, before anything else: connect to internet the computer on which you will set-up the ICS. Do you have internet access from it? If yes, I will continue with my explanation. If no... Try to solve the problem. Another problem: all you have is a USB modem/router? This is not so good... But don't listen to me. Maybe I am wrong. But at "the begining", the USB modems did not allow connection sharing Sorry to take so long in replying to this Viking... been away at university! The internet connection works fine from either connection depending on where I plug it in, alas yes it is only a USB modem... however as I have explained, the whole network was set up exactly as I am trying to set it up now, with exactly the same components as I used before and worked instantly and perfectly... I see no reason for it not to be the case now as all the variables people are throwing up shouldnt \ haven't changed... If it was a problem with ICS and the USB modem it would have been a problem from the start surely?Quote from: Atrias on May 18, 2007, 10:10:43 AM Sorry to take so long in replying to this Viking... been away at university! I agree with you. But, now, if it does not work you have to be creative. So I advise you to assign manually IP's to the computers with ips ranging from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254. The computer that has ICS enabled has on network interface card the ip 192.168.0.1. Ping from each computer to 192.168.0.1 and see if you receive right responses. Look for DNS address on computer with ICS and set it up on the other computers, also on tcp/ip settings. You have to find it on the router settings, I assume it receives it from ISP (internet service provider). Quote from: Atrias on May 18, 2007, 10:10:43 AM If it was a problem with ICS and the USB modem it would have been a problem from the start surely? You are right, if it was a problem it wouldn't work from the begining. |

Solve : Curly network question? |
|
Answer» I have 2 PC's in a home network. One runs XP Pro with SP2 and is connected to the net via a D-Link wireless router. The other PC runs XP Home with SP2 and is connected to the net thru the first machine and a D-Link transponder. Each PC has a separate login for me my wife and our daughter and we have shared files and shared printers on each PC. My question is this: Is it possible to set up the network so that I can access my login on either machine from either machine? In other words if I am logged in to the PC running Pro is it possible for me to set up the network so that I can access material on my login on the PC running Home and vice-versa? If this is possible can someone please give me a CLUE as to how to go about it?I do believe it's called a "Roaming User". That's a stupid word for Microsoft. Why does everyone keep using it? ...Cus someone else did?Or maybe because Sir Bill and Co. is the mother of all catastrophic computer failures.Quote from: Sid on May 17, 2007, 01:00:06 PM Quote from: Raptor on May 17, 2007, 12:26:58 PMThat's a stupid word for Microsoft. Why does everyone keep using it? Don't make me use the classic example.. Roaming profiles are used in windows (ACTIVE directory) domains, ussually. As he explain his problem, I don't see the fact that one computer is a file server, so that every time he changes his computer will be able to reach for that network share. Simply explained, dave2868, for doing that you need to create the same accounts on each computer where you want to use the same password. If you want to have common desktop background on both computers (and a few other common settings for the two computers) you have to create a new windows share, and the computer with that share should be on all the time you want to use your "roaming ACCOUNT". I think you are over reacting to a problem which involves file transfer: why don't you simply use those network shares? Create a directory, "share" it, apply security settings on it, and move through it all the files you need to move.Quote from: Raptor on May 17, 2007, 01:54:34 PM Quote from: Sid on May 17, 2007, 01:00:06 PMQuote from: Raptor on May 17, 2007, 12:26:58 PMThat's a stupid word for Microsoft. Why does everyone keep using it? If it looked like fun, I would. Simple as. So I sose I could just use the sharing folders but I was curious to know if it was possible to access my login for each computer from either computer. Yes they are the same password and no I'm not concerned about having the same background etc. It would be NICE to be able to do things like run Adaware and Spybot on both PC's from the one place, without having to walk from one room to the other and do it on both machines. Or even defrag from one PC etc. Maybe I'm over reaching myself but it was an interesting proposition. You still have to create the same accounts on both computers. For what are you asking maybe RealVNC or something similar may help you. By "create the same accounts on both computers" do you mean we each have to have the same login and password on both computers?? If thats the case then we already have, but I cannot see anything on the other computer except the sharing folder and the shared printers. I want to be able to use either PC to access the other and I cant figure out a way to do that with my current set up. I dont know whether the set up is wrong or whether I am asking too much of the network. If it is possible to do then I wanna try it..... if its not possible then I need to know that too.Yes, that is what I mean. For being able to control one computer from a remote computer (another computer) you may try RealVNC. It is freeware. You have to install it on both computers (all computers). You have to know the IPs of those computers when you want to use it. It is very simple to use, if you know how to access a network share from one computer to another you will be able to use this program. Install it using the default options (to start as a service etc) with ONE BIG EXCEPTION: set up a password on each computer (in RealVNC options I mean) on which you install RealVNC. More info on internet. Of course there are other programs that do the same thing: allow you to GAIN control of a remote computer from the computer you are working on. You are not asking "too much". The setup is fine if you can access your shares (that is primarily what you want to do with your network, isn't it?). It is possible what you ask, I just pointed you to RealVNC. Please try it and then tell us if it is what you desire. |

Solve : Network issues at work, Laptop, BT Business Hub, and PC...help please?? |
|
Answer» Hey guys, this is to sort out some stuff at work, I just want to double check to see if I'm correct in thinking what I do but should undergoing the following help "speed up" a laptop? Would that help speed things up? I mean a good dose of CCleaner should help no-end, but if I also move all that sh*t off the laptop's HDD, surely that will help speed it up? I doubt... If you don't unload running programs, simply copying files frome one hard to another will not speed up the laptop. Quote from: Sid on May 17, 2007, 11:35:57 AM I'm also having trouble with the PC's connections to the Till and the Hub. The till is connected via ethernet and NIC, and it's called "Till", and the hub is connected via USB, and is called "Hub". Till was installed first, and then came Hub. Maybe the command "route add" may help you. Quote from: Sid on May 17, 2007, 11:35:57 AM Also, sorry guys, but I want to get this all right, the PC IP on the Till connection seems to change every Friday, even though it is manually configured, and again, this has only happened since the arrival of Hub. Now this is a problem because it stops our Stock Control software from speaking to the till, this I can fix, simply by changing the IP again, but any idea why it happens, and how I might stop it? I'm sorry, no idea. It's the first time I hear about that problem (ip manually assigned but that changes automatically). The PC IP didn't change this week... I don't have a clue as to why it changed in the very first place, or again on the last two weeks, but it didn't this week, so maybe it was just a blip? Route add, in cmd? What's that gonna do. I don't wanna go *censored* this system up again. If now it is working, leave it alone. If it makes troubles, then repair it. What does "route add" in windows (or a similar command in other operating systems)? 2 options: 1) route /? 2) search on internet for better explanations.Quote Would that help speed things up? I mean a good dose of CCleaner should help no-end, but if I also move all that sh*t off the laptop's HDD, surely that will help speed it up? If your boss is a complete n00bie you should ask him for the recovery CDs. Less work, better results. Be sure to make back-ups first, though! Quote I'm also having trouble with the PC's connections to the Till and the Hub. The till is connected via ethernet and NIC, and it's called "Till", and the hub is connected via USB, and is called "Hub". Till was installed first, and then came Hub. This is a bit confusing. I know of no network device called a"Till" But I can tell you that a "Hub" is a bad idea. It causes a lot of collisions and that could slow down any network with a lot of data transfer. Replacing the hub with a switch should increase network speed if you are having problems. Since it's a very small company I'd just do a basic setup you'd have at home: 1. Modem -> Router ->4 PC's. The 4 ports on a router act as switches.. That's the cheapest, easiest and most reliable set-up you could create at home if there aren't any extra demands...? Quote from: Raptor on May 21, 2007, 10:42:08 AM QuoteWould that help speed things up? I mean a good dose of CCleaner should help no-end, but if I also move all that sh*t off the laptop's HDD, surely that will help speed it up? I meant I've named the connection "Till". As far as I know it's a Hub...it came packaged as a "BT Business Hub"...it's got the DSL in, 4 ethernets, a USB (out) and 2 voice ports. But yeah, I've adopted a NEW "if it aint broke, don't fix it" policy at work... And the demands are minimal on the system...basic web browsing, simple document creation (publisher/word files for POS (point of sale)), and the stock control software.Well, on the subject of the changing IP: Log in on your "Hub" (Assuming you can) and set it to a static IP (You'll have to set every PC to a static IP as well). Subnetmask would most likely be 255.255.255.0 , Gateway IP is the routers IP. |

But I do still have 1 problem:Those were a few problems I did forgot to say something We can access his files and printers but he can't access oures. I think its because of our firewall the 3 XP computers have Windows Onecare firewall but I edit the firewall to allow Windows Vista and printer sharing.I've posted a new topic on thisone.Quote from: Jonas Wauters on May 02, 2007, 05:33:50 AM
ipconfig /all For the security settings related to access some shares, there are a few options. I already told on other posts some informations regarding that problem. In windows xp, administrative tools, Local Security Policy, you have to search for the setting that allows the users to access the computer from network. After you set right the firewall of course. If another user, on another computer, is ABLE to use the shares then the firewall is set up right. I ASSUME you did not mention in firewall rules that "the following named users " (user list) "have access to this services" (port list/services list). Adapt what I said here to your particular case.First of all thanks Quote from: viking on May 15, 2007, 07:16:53 AM In windows xp, administrative tools, Local Security Policy, you have to search for the setting that allows the users to access the computer from network.I can't seem to find it. Answer» This will probably sound very silly, but I'm just curious... Is it possible to buy like a pre-paid wireless internet card, or somethin of that SORT to where you put it in your laptop and have wireless internet? I got this idea from a few weeks ago, I was sitting in a parking lot with my laptop, wishing I could pick up wireless internet. (I USED to could get it at that place but it's gone now, haven't been able to pick up anything there now in several months.) Solve : PUT PORTS IN THE ROUTER? |
|
Answer» Hi im Evilcyborh and i have some problem with my game. the problem is when i try to host a game i can see the Internal IP not the EXternal IP i want to now how i put in the game the external IP. Some guys told me to open ports of the game but i dont now how.................. i go to my router menu and i see ports forwamation but never work with the ports i put. please help meFrom what I can understand is you are trying to forward ports in your router, right? But i dont now how to put the ports in the website say ports IN an OUT and i dont have that configuracion of ports i have ports start, ports end, and ports map. Expland to me Did you click viking's link ? ? It pretty much explains everything...TrapperX asked you something and you ignored his question: your router is a [put your router model here]? ports in, port out: you have to think you are in the router. ports in: the ports that the router accepts connections (your game ports will be here). ports out: your router sends data to those ports on the destination device. So, as an EXAMPLE. You have a router and a computer "hidden" behind the router. You want to make a server, a game server, on the hidden computer and you need port forwarding. The game uses ports between P1 (it's a number here) and p2 (another number). Your computer (local) IP is a.b.c.d On your router you create a new rule: ports in: p1-p2 (the exact mode of defining that list DEPENDS on your router model. What router do you use?) ports out: p1-p2 destination computer/device: a.b.c.d (the router will send the data it receives from internet on his p1-p2 ports to the computer's p1-p2 ports. If your computer is not working, no connection is made. Observe: there are the same ports here, p1-p2 on router are the same NUMBERS as p1-p2 on your computer. You can use different combinations, but you have to know what you are doing.) What router do you use? Maybe it has a link to a MANUAL, to help you with a more specific link; and with a few more specific advices. |

Solve : Taking an exam!? |
|
Answer» Hi this is KIND of an off-topic post I suppose, but I hope it's in the right channel, being that I require the help of network officianados. I am taking a "brain-bench" for the company i work for. they will provide me an EXAM based on networking principals. My promotion depends on this exam. The clincher: they will allow me NO hints on study material. the company I work for is a telecom who provide internet service for a huge customer base. Fact is I am a novice in networking, but the job is entry level. SoOo- what would you GUYS study?Start HereCisco documentation (in your case Cisco CCNA), WINDOWS network documentation, Linux network documentation will help you. But we don't know if you need general information, "network PHYSICAL" documentation or operating system documentation. I think a little from all. So, my recomendation is Cisco CCNA all the way.thanks guys : ) |

Is there any network monitoring tool to find out the culprit. pls tell me the best network monitoring tool and the site. Thanking you Saregam You might take a look at PC Inspector's FSGuard. Called Dell, they want money, so I said forget it.Typical. If you have an internet cable, attatch on end to the router and the other end to your computer and see what happens. I don't THINK anyone here would send a CD, sorry about that.If you return to Dell's site and enter the service TAG# on the bottom of the laptop it will show your machine and what drivers you NEED for it.... If this is not fruitful try the Dell support Forums which have a ton of info.::)thank you to all who replied to my post. It is now working. Still going to try and find a copy of that resource cd though. they are always useful!!!!!No problem. Just stop by if you have any questions or problems. |

Solve : Help with connecting 2 computers with a router? |

Answer» I am using window xp on both the old and new comp. The router is a Linksys. On the old comp it is connected to the ethernet CARD in thr pci slot. The other end is connected to the new comp . On the sys tray is is saying that "a network cable is unplugged, Local area connection 2" I have gone over and over the connections and cant find a cable unplugged Here is a pic. This is just the 1st problem. The computers r NOT communicating with each other nor can i get the old comp to share my dsl. hello Echo Echo Echo lol, hello honvetops Quote from: honvetops on June 14, 2007, 05:43:56 PM Hey, a sales team !!! nice spam Ok so I stopped into your forum started reading some threads because I was bored. I found a question that I could help with so I took the time to sign up for the forum and answer the question. I do plan to visit and contribute if that is permissable. If it is not then please rewrite my answer to echo and then remove my answer and my account from this forum. Have a nice day Robert Donlon http://www.ccsav.com Ain't no big deal, Robert. You're welcome to come back any time. Recently there has been some controversy about displaying links in signatures that are are of commercial nature. You can set it up in your profile so that it displays and icon under your name. Welcome aboard.ok..well 1st problem is solved. Which is the above stated problem. Turns out that 1 of the wires was bad. So i went to the store and bought a new 1. As soon as i turned on both computers i got a notice saying something like 1 computer "saw the other" and visa versa. Now both computer can get onto the internet at the same time. I went ahead and opened "my computer" and told both computers to share the "c" drive. What do i do now? I want to be able to access the other older computer and bring files and pictures over into the newer 1? Where do i go to "see" the other computers drive? I went to "control panel" "network and internet connections" then "network connections" once there i went over to the menu on the left and hit "My network places" and the page is blank..nothing is there. So...where do i go? Im sorry to bother yall with basic stuff.. Disregard the above for now i have encounterded a problem on the old computer. When i go to "my computer" and click on Share and then "apply i immediately get "internet explorer has encountered a problem" message. I tried it 5 times and 5 times i get the same thing. The new compter shared with no problem. Any ideas? |

Solve : Getting windows 98' onto the internet? |
|
Answer» Ok I found the Dos Prompt and was able to find the IP information asked for earlier. Here it is. You cannot download an adapter, only drivers. The adapter in your machine is what you have to work with. If you have downloaded a mess of unnecessay drivers, I suggest you remove them. You may need to start from scratch. One thing you can try now - go into device manager and remove all network adapters. Then go into contral panel and double "add new hardware". See if windows detects your nic and loads drivers for it. See his post: « Reply #12 on: Yesterday at 12:03:39 PM » I didn't want to say too much, since I'm not real confident on this topic - but to me, after reading that post, it sounds like he has a LOT of different drivers installed. Read that post again..... what do you think?... am I CORRECT? Back then, I was wondering if it would be good ADVICE to tell him to uninstall them all, and then just reinstall the one he needs. |

Answer» Hi, I like to connect two computers together via crossover cable. Do i need to have two ethernet CARDS in ONE of the computers? My modem is Siemens SpeedStream 4200. If i reinstal my internet config. to using USB can i connect the crossover cable that way, since the RJ-45 port on the back of the modem will be free. Solve : Student computers need to be restricted? |
|
Answer» I am unsure where to go to clamp down rights/permissions on the "amazing" things students can do to computer workstations. The student computers are on a LAN using SQL server. The workstations are running Windows XPpro. When I tried to make the student logon a "restricted user," some of the interactive educational programs housed on the server were unable to launch. In the past, students have been given full admin rights to the local workstation in order for these educational programs to operate. The long and short of it is after spending tons of time reconditioning 40+ student computers (i.e. uninstalling non-educational programs; running disk cleanup & defragging which took most workstations over 1 hr. for ea. task; installing upwards of 80+ MS updates to a single computer x 40; STANDARDIZING desktops/screensavers, ETC.) I'd like to now set the student's rights/permissions to restricted user on the front-end, but still be able to launch the programs needed from the server. What you migh want nto do is make all the accounts limited but have the educational programs run as an administrator And how do you do that? For the "Run as..." command you have to know the administrator password. Or should he start on 40 computers that program, walking from one to another and typing the password? It will take him 30 minutes for the task... At least. [emailprotected], I imagine that your network now it is part of Active Directory (if I remember right). You have to play with the user settings until you find that you can use the program with a limited account (but that may need write access to some folders, to the program folder etc) or you may find it is impossible to do that. First thing that I would check are the security permissions on folders for that account, there may be folders INACCESSIBLE (with parts of the educational programs) even for reading to the restricted account. You don't say what the "server" OS is. Is it 2000 Server / 2003 Server? If either one of those you can create an OU (Organizational Units), move the students in it then create a GPO (Group Policy Object) for that OU. Alan <>< It is a 2003 SQL OS. I will try your suggestion. In one of the computer labs, there is only one interactive educational program which opens just fine with the student logon at the workstation designated as a "restricted user" and placed in the admin group on the backend (folder on server). Was this ok or should I go back and do what you suggested? I tried this same set-up in the other computer LAB, but there are two other interactive educational programs when opened, the student cannot "write" to them. It's possible there is a temp file/folder on the local workstation that might need admin access to interact properly. I am just not too sure at present and ran out of time last time while attempting the rights/permissions issue. Another thing, I've scheduled disk cleanup every Friday on all student computers. For the lab where students are restricted users, I had to give them admin rights for that task only and the utility will launch and perform. However, this was not true about disk defragmenter even though I gave the restricted user admin privileges for that utility as well, but the utility still would not launch and the message received kept saying you had to have admin rights to run this utility. Do you suppose to run/execute disk defragmenter on C:\ the utility goes by the logon? Of course, both utilities run just fine in the computer lab wherer students still have full admin rights at the local workstation. Do you have any suggestions in this area as well? I appreciate everyone's time and effort to help me arrive at the best set-up for student computers at our school. Right now, half of the computers are used with our ESL program and the other half with our HS students. It's the HS students I'm most worried about. Shortly, we will be adding a third computer lab for our LVN students. They, generally, should be rather trustworthy. Anyway, thanks again for any help!Be careful with the admin roles on your network. You will soon cry after your settings if you give the administrator credentials to many. If you are talking about "full rights" on certain folders (NOT system folders, I hope), than the possible DAMAGE is much smaller. Which way did you go, administrator for some (many) users on the server or full rights on a few folders for some users? I would choose folder rights to many others than administrator rights to many others (and I strongly advise you to do so). Concerning the disk cleanup, why don't you create a scheduled task with the administrator account credentials? Although I admit you can find a better solution than using the administrator account... Create another account and give him administrator credentials = include it in administrator accounts. I know, it seems to be exactly like the original administrator account. I will look if your problem can be solved otherwise. On scheduled tasks, when you create a new task, it let you choose what account to use when the task will run. You can specify a different time of the day, it does not matter if the user is logged in or not. The user account has to have the necessary rights to access the diferent folders for the application to be run.In my experience (I set up a network for a troubled boys school) I found that if you give any student admin rights he/she will exploit it for all it's worth. That school has a networked program that the students have to write to but with the OU in place and the proper GPO set up, they could do their schoolwork and not get into any mischief. I had the desktops locked down so all they could do was a word processor & the school program...nothing else. No changing the desktop / Internet access / no "run" command or DOS access. Strict I know but necessary. One suggestion: if possible set up a test system with a server and 1 or 2 student systems and test your setup there. NEVER test on production systems. BIG Bozo-nono Good luck! Alan <>< |

Solve : Issuses connecting laptop to the internet - $20 to whoever fixes this? |

Answer» I am running XP on a Dell Laptop and cannot get the laptop to connect to the internet. The problem started all of a sudden when the only thing I COULD get to connect would be msn. Tried to reinstall all network devices LAN and wireless. Same outcome. Ran a reload and install of OPERATING system (needed anyway), needless to say the computer runs a lot better, but still without connecting to Net. I can ping the computer. When I try and telnet to say www.msn.com says that is can not connect to the host on port 23 or 3404 either way. Since the reinstall of XP not able to connect to MSN. Hooked up a PCMCIA network card and see all activities lights with no connection to the internet. If you have any ideas feel free to share. I am to say the least stumped. I will throw in $20 for successful resolution. more info needed |

Back off the CRT crowd, not all of us have Mommy and Daddy around to buy us the new flash 19" LCD TFT screens, and not all of us have more money than sense. But to the OP, have you tried installing the driver that originally came with the machine, it'll be on a disc you got with the computer, seeing as you can't connect for long enough to d/l the newer ones. If not, then try d/ling it on another machine, and burning it to disk, and doing things that way.Hi all, Thanks for your help.Really appreciate you all taking some time out to help others. I tried reinstalling the driver many times but nothing much happens. I am trying to configure a LAN (Home Network ) with my laptop. The laptop has got no problems with its network card. The Huawei router is for accessing the net ( Broadband). It works intermittently , how I dont know , the only thing is that when some trouble occurs ... the LAN cord when not connected on both ends still shows that LAN is connected and working properly when infact it should be showing that "A cable is unplugged ". It's "ancient" even in third world countries...) Oh, well... Not my "Mommy and Daddy" bought me LCDs. Your EYES, your money, your opinion. I strongly advise to replace that old monitor with a newer one, preferably LCD. NOTE: this is my opinion! I can tell you that even LCD's have flicker, and if you dont' have good hardware you may even say that's it's much more annoying than the old crt. In this summer I will check a BenQ T720 with a Nvidia GeForce MX 440, on a Duron 700 which is 7 years old (the Duron computer/videocard, not the LCD). A 19" LCd it's near 200 USD (I suppose you live in the US; I'm living in Romania, a poor country in east Europe), a 17" it's close to 100 USD (and in Romania the prices are higher than in USA). A 15" CRT you won't even find here. Oh, well, maybe at 2nd hand - MAYBE! The smallest monitors I see are 17" crt's at least. Which have a viewable area of an 15" LCD, which costs 100 USD - in Romania, where a 7600 gt it's about 150 USD, very close to 200 USD and over. comwizz: "media disconnected" Check the cable, please.Quote from: viking on June 03, 2007, 11:57:34 PM Quote from: Sid on June 01, 2007, 12:21:28 PMQuote from: viking on May 30, 2007, 12:30:36 AM(OH MY GOD! I'm in the UK, and don't have the dosh lying around to blow on pointless upgrades, but anyway.[Off topic] If I want something to be good at my computer, really good, then I want the monitor. It is not a pointless upgrade, I thought I am doing a service if I point out something what I consider to be a problem at his computer. Solve : computer vs laptop? |
|
Answer» i worked with a desktop, it crapped out and had to reformatted, i then purchased a laptop and connected to modem through ethernet. i cant connect my desktop back and run the laptop wireless again. what happened? PLEASE explain... If the device you are using to connect to internet is a modem and in it's documentation it does not specify that it has a router or that 2 or more computers can be connected to it at the same time, then you NEED to buy a: OPTION 1) router, a wired one. You will have to set it up (it's very SIMPLE) option 2) network card. For this option to work you have to set up ICS on the computer in which you place the SECOND network card. Have you used the wireless connection of the laptop before? I don't get this part from what you said. |
