Solve : Wireless network unplugged?

Answer»

I have a Phillips MT2000. I would like to connect a NETGEAR WGR614 v7 router to my COMPUTER. Icannot INSTALL the router because the wlreless network is unplugged. What does this means? How do I plug in the network?Did you get a manual with that router? Most ELECTRONICS come with them. You may ALSO want to read the Networking portion in the FAQ section.

Solve : Network Users?

Answer»

I have a wireless network set up in my house. Right now it is configured for open access and I dont want to turn on encryption. How can I monitor who is using my network/ logged on? Also, can I kick them off my network at my discretion?

ThanksYou obviously do not read the news nor pay ATTENTION to anything the manual says.
Be stupid at your own RISK, but here are a few pointers;

1. Use MAC address filtering to determine what wireless NICs gain access
2. Set the router to have each Wireless device not see other wireless devices. Thanks for answering the question.

Only one person lives close enough to me to use my router, I do not care if they do.

Could someone please offer some useful help?

Thanks.Quote from: Sean on May 18, 2007, 08:54:54 PM

Umm...what hardware have you got? This should be good...Quote

Mind giving me your creditcard number, then? Ive got a linksys router, I can be more specific later, if necessary.

And on another note: I'm sorry, but I'm not very fluent in sarcasm.A linksys router?
There are more then one linksys routers.
But white the one I have you can just type the ipaddress of the router in your Internet browser to GET to the security settings.
Then you can click the advanced tap and click wireless.
Then you click the "edit access list" tap and then you should have the MAC filter settings.

Jonas Why exactly do you not want to ENCRYPT your DATA...? If you do not secure your network, you cannot control who uses it, nor complain about it when they do.

Solve : help me!!! my laptop cannot connect to the internet!!?

Answer»

im having trouble connecting my laptop to the net via the ethernet cable....i have tried everything!! my network adapter is functioning fine and i have brought a new ethernet cable...i am only getting wireless....i am at my wits end!!!!
somebody help!!What are you connecting it to?
A network, or an Internet Connection?

Who is your ISP? How do you connect to ISP (Internet Service Provider) equipment? Do you connect to a router? A wireless router? Do you connect to a friend's equipment? Do you have network equipment in your home?

im connecting it via a modem and ethernet cable. i have my isp address but i cant connect to the net....it keeps on saying 'unsucessful'......could there be a fault with the network cable thats attached to the modem??I'm having the same problem and have tried vertually everything. My dial up doesnt work either saying that it cant find the server.
Which according to microsoft is due to CERTIFICATE issues in the registry which i dont want to touch for fear of messing it up further. Quote from: Jay07 on May 15, 2007, 04:37:30 PM

You say you're getting wireless?? Is it your own wireless network, or someone else's?

Anyways, are there any errors (X, ! or ?'s) in device manager (control panel, system, hardware)?

Are the IP's/DNS set to be obtained automatically? (Network connections, Right click on the network you're having problems with, properties, scroll box TCP/IP, click, properties box)

Is the cable plugged in the correct socket on the modem, and on your computer?

And who is the ISP?Quote from: honeyrose on May 15, 2007, 08:12:20 AM

I don't understand the part "i am only getting wireless". So... What are your network equipments? A modem, connected through ethernet cable to your provider's equipment? Your computer is connected directly to modem (through cable, wireless?) or do you have a switch/router and you connect through it?

I am trying to guess what are you using and how are you using that. Also, your Internet Service Provider gave you some advices about how to connect a computer/network to his equipment?

I do not want to overwhelm you with the informations I ask; just try to tell us as much as you are aware of and I will try to find a sollution or to direct you to find a solution.

Do you have your isp address? Are you talking about tcp/ip properties?
Another question: if you ask your provider for some help, they will charge your bill? It will be easier for you to solve the problem if they will help you a little.

Please post here the full error message that you receive when you try to browse the internet.

i keep on getting a 169 ip address!! something wrong with the hardware i think!! wireless is already INSTALLED with the laptop !! im really starting to hate MODERN technology! im trying to connect via modem, which has a white cable running through it and the ethernet cable is attached to my laptop...but it keeps on saying 'unidentified network. access: limited connectivity!! *facepalm* its like living in the dark ages If it's a cable between the modem and your laptop then you are not using wireless technology to connect to internet.
And that 169 ip address says that your cable or network adapter might be faulty, your laptop cannot comunicate with the modem (what model of modem?). Or maybe you changed the network interface card (NIC) and your modem does not recognize the "new" NIC as being legitimate. In this case it's better to phone your isp to UPDATE your data. They will PROBABLY need the new MAC address of the network card (they could ask you the MAC address of your laptop, it means the same thing, but the MAC really belongs to NIC).

Your modem has a few leds on it. Does it show it has connection?

Another problem, which I didn't think about: what is your NIC MAC address? (MAC address is also called physical address). If it is something like FF-FF-FF-FF-FF-FF and you did not set it up so, then your NIC is surely faulty. Instead of FFs you have to have something much more "random", all the groups should not be the same.yeah, thanks mate. i thought that it might be the network adapter. im taking it to the computer shop to get it checked out!!! after that im not going anywhere near technology.................i seem to set them off.

thanks for your help!!

Solve : Networking Problems?

Answer»

Hey,

I'm sorry if a solution to this problem has been posted elsewhere but I've tried just about everything I've read on this forum, including the guide to networking so any advice not to pointing in the direction of the guide would be greatly appreciated.

Anyways, I hope someone can help with this

I'm trying to re-set up a home ethernet network with ICS between two computers. The NICs are installed and connected by standard ethernet cable and my internet connection is via an ASDL USB Modem. There is no hub or router involved.

I've run the "Set up a Home or Small Office Network" Wizard several times on both computers, enabled ICS on my host, configured internet options numerous ways many times on both the client and the host, enabled and disabled firewalls on both computers. I've tried both automatic and manual address signing and this is where the first major problem occurs:

On setting both the host and the client to Obtain IP Address \ DNS Address automatically my Host displays "Limited or No Connectivity" whilst my Client displays "Connected" even though it cannot access the internet and upon "repairing" the connection it displays the "Unable to REFRESH IP, please contact network admin" message. If I run the Network Wizard at this point my Host says it has a manually assigned address (which it doesn't) and my Client says it has still got a DHCP assigned address.

When I follow the advice from the guide and proceed to manually assign addresses they both declare they are connected but no matter what DNS address I put into the client (Either my host IP, or my ISP's) I'm still unable to connect to any site nor access anything on one COMPUTER from the other.

Is there anything I've missed out? Any additional information you might require?Try this: Set up the "host" as (e.g.) 192.168.4.1 and the "client" as 192.168.4.2, with a gateway IP address of 192.168.4.1. Make sure each PC can ping each other. (Are you using a crossover cable?)

If that fails, this page has some suggestions: http://fhctech.org/fhc/networking/ics.htmHey Pomeroy,

Thanks for the reply...

I have tried pinging my client and my host using the ping command on the command prompt (correct?).

Pinging my client from my host works perfectly (4 packets sent, 4 packets received) but for some reason when I try to ping my host from my client the request times out...

The cable I'm using is the one that came with my ethernet cards that always worked before. How will I know if its a crossover cable or not?

Thanks for your help!Hold the cable ENDS under a light and look at the color connections...if they are the same left to RIGHT it is not a crossover cable...Quote from: Atrias on April 03, 2007, 03:15:57 AM

Hey Pomeroy,

Just "Rob" is fine.

Quote from: Atrias on April 03, 2007, 03:15:57 AM

I'm pretty sure it won't be. XP is fussy about this (and so it should be). You'll need to buy a crossover cable or use a hub/switch in between the two PCs. Both are fairly inexpensive and involve no further configuration (provided it's a bog-standard "dumb" switch/hub).Connector cables on the lead are all different colours, by that reckoning it is a crossover cable.

This still puts me back at square one hmm....

I have a hub that I can use potentially... will it work with a USB modem?

Just tried to configure the hub but theres no USB on it... guess that won't work (For your information its a Belkin 4-Port Router)

Any other avenues we could investigate?

Thanks for everyone's help and Rob, sorry about the name thing, I thought your Messageboard name was Pomeroy, didn't see the Rob hehe!I meant use a hub between the two PCs. I still think you've got a straight through cable there, by the way, not a crossover.

Don't worry about the name. I've been called worse. If I can't plug in the USB modem to the hub will the ICS still work the same way it would normally?

I really don't know about the cable, it's "different colours from left to right" as suggested by patio... it worked perfectly on the same network before everything stopped working, I don't understand how \ why when I'm trying to do exactly the same thing as I did before now it work work!Try this setup: Have your host Computer have the Usb modem hooked up to it, then run a cable from the Ethernet port in that computer to the WAN port in the router. Then plug in your other computer. M1CH431, thanks for the advice,

I tried that setup myself but in the Configuration ran through on the Driver \ Setup CD it says that its not plugged in correctly (assumably because the modem is not plugged in correctly)

I will test that set-up again and see if theres anything else that might be the problem,

I'm going to test and see if I can network and ICS between my current client and an aditional separate computer to see upon which computer the fault actually lies too...

Thanks everyone for your help, we're getting there slowly I hope! This is sort of shooting into the dark but try that set up but make sure you have the connection set to share. You do this by going to My Network Places, then view connections, then right click your network card and go to properties. Then at the top click advanced then click the check box that says: Allow other network users to connect through this internet connection. My Internet Connection is definitely set up to allow other users to connect through it... Is that what you mean or do you mean my Local AREA Connection should be set up to allow other users to connect through it...

Since my last post I tried changing which computer is the host and which is the client and I get the same problem:

Whichever computer is the host wont have an address automatically assigned to it by the DHCP server, whichever is the client automatically gets an address assigned by the DHCP server...

However I can ping the client from the host but not the host from the client...

(Just to refresh you all)

Still getting absolutely nowhere with this and its driving me insane...

Thanks again everyone! When you use ICS you are OBLIGED to use addresses from the 192.168.0 class. The multihomed computer (the one on which you set up the ICS) has 2 network cards; the one that connects to internet (router/modem) will have the IP settings that were told you by your ISP. The other one has the address 192.168.0.1.

First thing to do, before anything else: connect to internet the computer on which you will set-up the ICS. Do you have internet access from it?
If yes, I will continue with my explanation.
If no... Try to solve the problem.

Another problem: all you have is a USB modem/router? This is not so good... But don't listen to me. Maybe I am wrong. But at "the begining", the USB modems did not allow connection sharing Sorry to take so long in replying to this Viking... been away at university!

The internet connection works fine from either connection depending on where I plug it in, alas yes it is only a USB modem... however as I have explained, the whole network was set up exactly as I am trying to set it up now, with exactly the same components as I used before and worked instantly and perfectly... I see no reason for it not to be the case now as all the variables people are throwing up shouldnt \ haven't changed...

If it was a problem with ICS and the USB modem it would have been a problem from the start surely?Quote from: Atrias on May 18, 2007, 10:10:43 AM

I agree with you. But, now, if it does not work you have to be creative. So I advise you to assign manually IP's to the computers with ips ranging from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254. The computer that has ICS enabled has on network interface card the ip 192.168.0.1.
Ping from each computer to 192.168.0.1 and see if you receive right responses. Look for DNS address on computer with ICS and set it up on the other computers, also on tcp/ip settings.
You have to find it on the router settings, I assume it receives it from ISP (internet service provider).

You are right, if it was a problem it wouldn't work from the begining.

Solve : Curly network question?

Answer»

I have 2 PC's in a home network. One runs XP Pro with SP2 and is connected to the net via a D-Link wireless router. The other PC runs XP Home with SP2 and is connected to the net thru the first machine and a D-Link transponder. Each PC has a separate login for me my wife and our daughter and we have shared files and shared printers on each PC. My question is this: Is it possible to set up the network so that I can access my login on either machine from either machine? In other words if I am logged in to the PC running Pro is it possible for me to set up the network so that I can access material on my login on the PC running Home and vice-versa? If this is possible can someone please give me a CLUE as to how to go about it?I do believe it's called a "Roaming User".

Not sure how to set it up, but with knowing what it's called a google search, or a search in the mothership should kick something up...in fact:

Don't make me use the classic example.. Roaming profiles are used in windows (ACTIVE directory) domains, ussually.
As he explain his problem, I don't see the fact that one computer is a file server, so that every time he changes his computer will be able to reach for that network share.

Simply explained, dave2868, for doing that you need to create the same accounts on each computer where you want to use the same password. If you want to have common desktop background on both computers (and a few other common settings for the two computers) you have to create a new windows share, and the computer with that share should be on all the time you want to use your "roaming ACCOUNT". I think you are over reacting to a problem which involves file transfer: why don't you simply use those network shares? Create a directory, "share" it, apply security settings on it, and move through it all the files you need to move.Quote from: Raptor on May 17, 2007, 01:54:34 PM

If it looked like fun, I would. Simple as. So I sose I could just use the sharing folders but I was curious to know if it was possible to access my login for each computer from either computer. Yes they are the same password and no I'm not concerned about having the same background etc. It would be NICE to be able to do things like run Adaware and Spybot on both PC's from the one place, without having to walk from one room to the other and do it on both machines. Or even defrag from one PC etc. Maybe I'm over reaching myself but it was an interesting proposition. You still have to create the same accounts on both computers.
For what are you asking maybe RealVNC or something similar may help you. By "create the same accounts on both computers" do you mean we each have to have the same login and password on both computers?? If thats the case then we already have, but I cannot see anything on the other computer except the sharing folder and the shared printers. I want to be able to use either PC to access the other and I cant figure out a way to do that with my current set up. I dont know whether the set up is wrong or whether I am asking too much of the network. If it is possible to do then I wanna try it..... if its not possible then I need to know that too.Yes, that is what I mean.

For being able to control one computer from a remote computer (another computer) you may try RealVNC. It is freeware. You have to install it on both computers (all computers). You have to know the IPs of those computers when you want to use it.

It is very simple to use, if you know how to access a network share from one computer to another you will be able to use this program. Install it using the default options (to start as a service etc) with ONE BIG EXCEPTION: set up a password on each computer (in RealVNC options I mean) on which you install RealVNC. More info on internet.
Of course there are other programs that do the same thing: allow you to GAIN control of a remote computer from the computer you are working on.

You are not asking "too much". The setup is fine if you can access your shares (that is primarily what you want to do with your network, isn't it?). It is possible what you ask, I just pointed you to RealVNC. Please try it and then tell us if it is what you desire.

Solve : Network issues at work, Laptop, BT Business Hub, and PC...help please??

Answer»

Hey guys, this is to sort out some stuff at work, I just want to double check to see if I'm correct in thinking what I do but should undergoing the following help "speed up" a laptop?

The hardware (from memory) is:

A PC (XP Home(or so System says) SP2), 1GB RAM, 150GB HDD, 3.something gHz

The PC is physically connected to a BT Business Hub (DSL comes in with 4 Ethernet ports, 1 USB, and wireless) and also to a till (Which uses the ethernet NIC in the computer, so I've got the hub connected via USB)

Now the laptop is a Sony Viao...and that's all I know. Oh it's XP SP2, think it's Home. It connects to the network wirelessly.

Now, the laptop needs an extensivly good clean out. My boss (opinion withheld) used to use it at home, in a second business he was running, and this one...so it has tonnes of *censored* on it. So I'm thinking a good session with CCleaner will help speed things along, however...

He has a bunch of stuff stored on the laptop that he only uses when he is on site, so I'm thinking that transfering all the stuff he doesn't need to store on the laptops actual HDD could be stored on the PC's one instead, and he could access it as and when he needs it.

WOULD that help speed things up? I mean a good dose of CCleaner should help no-end, but if I also move all that *censored* off the laptop's HDD, surely that will help speed it up?

I'm also having trouble with the PC's connections to the Till and the Hub. The till is connected via ethernet and NIC, and it's called "Till", and the hub is connected via USB, and is called "Hub". Till was installed first, and then came Hub.

Now the problem is, we need the PC to communicate with the Till every night. Wasn't a problem until the Hub go put in...now, if the Hub is enabled, the program we use for stock control fails to connect to the till, it's as if it is going down the Hub connection, not the Till one. So as a fix, we just disable the hub connection every night, and it communicates fine, but I'm of the opinion we shouldn't have to do that.

Also, sorry guys, but I want to get this all right, the PC IP on the Till connection seems to change every Friday, even though it is manually configured, and again, this has only happened since the arrival of Hub. Now this is a problem because it stops our Stock Control software from speaking to the till, this I can fix, simply by changing the IP again, but any idea why it happens, and how I might stop it?

Just had a thought actually...do you think if I connected the Till to the Hub, and then the PC to the Hub (both Via ethernet) I would be able to have the PC and Till talk as they do? The thing is, the IP on the Till and the IP on the PC have to remain the same, or else I'll forever be re-configuring the Stock Control software. Where as the Hub AUTOMATICALLY assigns IP's to the network (which I don't mind manually configuring, seeing as it's only ever the PC and the one (rarely two) laptop(s).)

Sorry to unload a tonne of problems all at once, it's just I'd like to get the network as streamlined and running as smoothly as possible.

Any help to any of the problems is muchly appreciated.

It's a small family run company, and I'm the shop manager there, and as the one with the most computer know-how, I've unofficially become the IT Department. I'm not getting paid extra for it, but I'm using it as good experience, because I'm currently doing a COMP Tia A+ essentials, with the aim to becoming MICROSOFT Certified Systems Engineer qualified.

Thanks again guys for the help (in advance).Quote from: Sid on May 17, 2007, 11:35:57 AM

I doubt... If you don't unload running programs, simply copying files frome one hard to another will not speed up the laptop.

I'm sorry, no idea. It's the first time I hear about that problem (ip manually assigned but that changes automatically).

The PC IP didn't change this week...

I don't have a clue as to why it changed in the very first place, or again on the last two weeks, but it didn't this week, so maybe it was just a blip?

Route add, in cmd? What's that gonna do. I don't wanna go *censored* this system up again. If now it is working, leave it alone.
If it makes troubles, then repair it.

What does "route add" in windows (or a similar command in other operating systems)?
2 options:

1) route /?

2) search on internet for better explanations.Quote

If your boss is a complete n00bie you should ask him for the recovery CDs. Less work, better results.

Be sure to make back-ups first, though!

This is a bit confusing. I know of no network device called a"Till"

But I can tell you that a "Hub" is a bad idea. It causes a lot of collisions and that could slow down any network with a lot of data transfer. Replacing the hub with a switch should increase network speed if you are having problems.

Since it's a very small company I'd just do a basic setup you'd have at home:

1. Modem -> Router ->4 PC's. The 4 ports on a router act as switches..

That's the cheapest, easiest and most reliable set-up you could create at home if there aren't any extra demands...? Quote from: Raptor on May 21, 2007, 10:42:08 AM

Would that help speed things up? I mean a good dose of CCleaner should help no-end, but if I also move all that sh*t off the laptop's HDD, surely that will help speed it up?

If your boss is a complete n00bie you should ask him for the recovery CDs. Less work, better results.

Be sure to make back-ups first, though!

I'm also having trouble with the PC's connections to the Till and the Hub. The till is connected via ethernet and NIC, and it's called "Till", and the hub is connected via USB, and is called "Hub". Till was installed first, and then came Hub.

I meant I've named the connection "Till".

As far as I know it's a Hub...it came packaged as a "BT Business Hub"...it's got the DSL in, 4 ethernets, a USB (out) and 2 voice ports.

But yeah, I've adopted a NEW "if it aint broke, don't fix it" policy at work...

And the demands are minimal on the system...basic web browsing, simple document creation (publisher/word files for POS (point of sale)), and the stock control software.Well, on the subject of the changing IP:

Log in on your "Hub" (Assuming you can) and set it to a static IP (You'll have to set every PC to a static IP as well).

Subnetmask would most likely be 255.255.255.0 , Gateway IP is the routers IP.

Solve : Crossover Cable ??

Answer»

Hi, I just like to know if i can network Windows XP Pro to Windows Home

VIA crossover cable? WOULD i need a SWITCH? Thank you.If you have just 2 computers, a cross-over cable would do just fine. If there are more than 2 computers you will need a switch.

Second point: you need to set up ips for your computers. If you have firewalls, you will need to specify rules for allowing trafic between computers.

Well tufek1000 I suggest reading the Network FAQ written by Ch MEMBER Rob Pomeroy. Definitely a well written faq, and it will get your computers networked in no time. Thank you all for your advice, you have been a great help.

Solve : Different Connections?

Answer»

If I WANTED to create a network between two computers, and one computer had wireless, but the other didn't, and I didn't want to USE a ethernet cable, could connect them wirelessly? Or could I atleast transfer information one-way?The one that doesn't WOULD need a wireless network adapter.

Solve : Workgroup?

Answer»

We have a small network at home that is secured by linksys.
Now 2 of the four people have a workgroup called WORKGROUP and the other 2 have an other workgroup or do not have a workgroup.
Now I want to make sure that everyone has the same workgroup.
If it is possible I would like to keep the WORKGROUP and change the other 2 to the WORKGROUP.
Is this possible and how do I have to do that.
comp1: Windows XP prof (SP2) WORKGROUP My laptop.
comp2: Windows XP prof (SP2) WORKGROUP Notebook
comp3: Windows XP prof (SP2) other workgroup Laptop
comp4: Windows Vista home premium no workgroup Laptop
Its a wireless network.
Computer 2 is admin of that network and we can't acces his shared printers.
How can I change that.
I can enter the PC ist not like I'm trying to hack it or something.

Thanks in advance

JonasWe used to have a specialist but now I'm trying to be the specialist.
I also noticed When I do not use simple file sharing that all our disk files of all PC from the whole network are shared when I click stop sharing I can see the whole network in My network places otherwise I can't.
Does anyone knows how I can stop sharing my disks because it always show an error message:
"This share was created for administrative propose only. The share will reappear when the server service is stopped and restarted or the computer is rebooted."
All the firewalls are set to allow PRINTER and file share I can't adjust that.

I HOPE you have enough information to solve this BIG problem and I really thank you all for trying it.
You want to have everything in the same workgroup?

What prevents you from simply doing that? Yeah but how ?
I'm afraid if I make a new workgroup that I wouldn't work white the linksys system.
Or does those 2 thing have noting to do with each other?Unrelated, assuming they're all connected to the same router and not through Internet Connection Sharing. Yes but how do you create a workgroup?
It doesn't stained with network setup wizard.(Het staat niet bij netwerk setup wizard.Sorry that this is in dutch but I can't explain it in English.)
Thanks for the other information.
It's under Deze computer -> Eigenschappen -> Computernaam -> "Wijzigen" I did know that but it was to long ago that I did that.
Thanks for refreshing my memory.Of course you did, I was just testing you. No its really true.
But I do still have 1 problem:
Everything WORKS on the XP computers but Windows vista doesn't have the tap for entire network.
It also doesn't want to accept the sharing of the printer on the notebook.
And I can't find the MAC address of his Wireless card it used to be under Apparaatbeheer>Netwerkadaptors>Details but it isn't specified in Vista.
Is the a code you can type in DOS sow you can see the MAC address?

Thanks in advance JonasQuote from: Jonas Wauters on May 02, 2007, 05:33:50 AM

But I do still have 1 problem:
Those were a few problems
I did forgot to say something
We can access his files and printers but he can't access oures.
I think its because of our firewall the 3 XP computers have Windows Onecare firewall but I edit the firewall to allow Windows Vista and printer sharing.I've posted a new topic on thisone.Quote from: Jonas Wauters on May 02, 2007, 05:33:50 AM

ipconfig /all

For the security settings related to access some shares, there are a few options. I already told on other posts some informations regarding that problem. In windows xp, administrative tools, Local Security Policy, you have to search for the setting that allows the users to access the computer from network.
After you set right the firewall of course. If another user, on another computer, is ABLE to use the shares then the firewall is set up right. I ASSUME you did not mention in firewall rules that "the following named users " (user list) "have access to this services" (port list/services list). Adapt what I said here to your particular case.First of all thanks

And I used GETMAC for the MAC adress after just trying.

Solve : sudden poor connection?

In the past TWO weeks my in home WIRELESS connection suddenly began to stop working as well as before. The range of my router is no where near the strength that it used to be. Futhermore at TIMES when my computer says that I have good connection my browser says that it cannot connect to the server. I've cleaned my drives and browser and run virus scans and updates but STILL nothing is helping.

Thank youHmmm , i would contact your internet provider there may be something wrong with there systems , im just THROWING ideas at your here , but i seriously think your best bet is to get into to the phone with who ever it is your internet is provided by.ISP has nothing to do with router connections. Have you moved or relocated the router or computer? Has anything been placed in an area that could be obstacle?

Solve : network password?

Answer»

I have a wired HOME network for a few years with no problems. (4 COMPUTERS) My son returned from college and now when I try to ACCESS files on his computer through the network (I see his computer in workplace computers) I can access my computer from his but when try to access his computer a dialog box pops up asking for a password. (The user name is his computer name and is greyed out) have never experienced this before. Was a password created that he does not know about on his machine? Is the password on my machine? I tried every conceivable password that we both use.
Any help is appreciated.Looks like he doesn't want Mom finding his pr()n.Windows sometimes goes "amok". It would not be something unusual to loose it's security settings and ASSUME some default security settings (or random, in the worst case).
You may want to CHECK in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Local security policy, User rights assignments, Access this computer from network: your username (with which you want to connect to your son's computer from another computer) should be mentioned there. If your username has no password associated, the Guest user should have access rights, and the required security settings on the son's computer (read, eventually write, access righst on the folders/files you want to browse from network).

currently I have the befsr41 one, but I was going through some stuff in my closet and found the ezxs55w. The BEFSR41 is a router but the EZXS55W is a desktop switch.
I believe that a desktop switch is only for workgroups and doesn't CONTAIN an Internet connection although I doubt that if you put an Internet cable into it that it wouldn't connect to the Internet.
You may want to check the links I've given you.

Jonas Ohhh, okay, NVM, I THINK the router I currently have is better lol. Thank you!whatever WORKS*

Solve : Networked HP Printer IP addressing probs?

Answer»

I just bought a HP 2600n Network-ready printer, and the very FIRST TIME I installed it, it was found on the LAN network in my office - 192.168.1.9.

But now, it simply cannot be found on the LAN network, though I can still 'find' it on Auto-IP - 169.254.151.29...

It is connected by LAN cable directly to the modem. When I try to tweak it manually, they still say they cannot find it.

Can anyone give me advice on how I can ENSURE it is BACK on my LAN network? Or is Auto-IP perfectly VIABLE?I do believe auto-IP is fine.

The printer I've setup at work is attached to a PC with auto-IP and things communicate with it just fine."Auto" IP is called DHCP.. What IPs do other computers have?Heer more information about this topic. It is from the Microsoft site. You would use an IP only if you know the LAN IPs are fixed, which is not the rule in Windows XP.

Solve : confusing network problem :(?

Answer»

I have verizon DSL. I have two computers and a router that I created a network with. The computer called davidzhang has the shared folder, which is called shared. I had the FREE avast antivirus and the free zone alarm on it, and the network was working fine, and the second computer was able to access davidzhang and open shared to access the files inside.

Now I switched to Kaspersky 6.0.2.614, which costs money, and Zone Alarm Pro 7.0.302 by checkpoint, which costs money. So basically I switched antiviruses and changed to the more advanced Zone Alarm that costs money. Now everything doesn't work.

My second computer can't access davidzhang and the folder shared anymore. The shared folder is on the desktop of davidzhang computer, and I can open it. However, if, on davidzhang computer, I go \\davidzhang\shared, it says "\\davidzhang\shared is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network location cannot be reached. For more INFORMATION about network troubleshooting, see Windows help."

On the davidzhang computer, I am on the administrator account, so I don't get why I can't open the shared folder through that. I've tried shutting down zonealarm and kaspersky, but it still didn't work.

In SAFE mode, it doesn't work either. There is only one account on my computer, and that is the account called davidzhang, which is the admin account on the davidzhang computer. However, when I loaded safe mode, two accounts appeared. One is the davidzhang account, and the other is called Administrator. It doesn't work in safe mode through that account either. I've even uninstalled zone alarm pro and kaspersky, and it still didn't work.

so to summarize it, I can open the folder shared just by CLICKING it on my desktop, but I can't access it through \\davidzhang\shared. My computer is called davidzhang and the admin account, the only admin account on this computer is called davidzhang too.

I'm not sure if it's zonealarm or kaspersky that's causing the problem. I'm pretty sure it's zone alarm.

Help!!!A couple of things to try:
1. Do a system restore prior to the problems starting. If that doesn't work...
2. Try uninstalling both applications, rebooting after doing one, then the other. Now see if everything works. If so, install one program. Test to see if all things work. If so, install the second program. Test to see if all things work.

Make sure you have your Windows CD handy.

Alan <><
thanks for the advice, but if I uninstall these two programs, I might not be able to get them to work again, since they both require money and I'm not sure if entering the same CD KEY stuff will work.

Oh and also, I think I've tried uninstalling the two programs before, though I don't remember rebooting each time I do one."...I might not be able to get them to work again, since they both require money and I'm not sure if entering the same CD key stuff will work.

Did you register them after they were installed? If so then the keys should work.

Oh and also, I think I've tried uninstalling the two programs before, though I don't remember rebooting each time I do one.

Process of elimination. Do one, then the other to see if one of them is causing the problem.

Any program I download, then purchase, I ALWAYS burn to a cd just in case of a situation like yours. and make copies of the serial numbers/purchase order/whatever. That way if I need to reinstall everything I've got it on CD and don't have to worry about downloading it all over again.

Alan <>< nope, still doesn't workThe last two things I can think of is a restore from an earlier date or save your data, wipe the drive & reinstall.

Alan <>< Have you checked in ZA's setup to make sure you are allowing local computers access to each other?

Solve : Pre-Paid wireless internet???

Answer»

This will probably sound very silly, but I'm just curious... Is it possible to buy like a pre-paid wireless internet card, or somethin of that SORT to where you put it in your laptop and have wireless internet? I got this idea from a few weeks ago, I was sitting in a parking lot with my laptop, wishing I could pick up wireless internet. (I USED to could get it at that place but it's gone now, haven't been able to pick up anything there now in several months.) Anyway I saw a lady sitting in a vehicle next to me with a laptop, and I couldn't see very well but I think she was on the internet, and I saw a card type looking thing in her laptop, henceforth I got this WHOLE idea. lol thanksLooks like it's possible:

Link

Also know many wi-fi hot spots that are not free will often allow people on the network for an alloted amount of time for a small fee. May want to see if who ever is providing the wi-fi around that area if they're no longer free and if not what they charge.

It's also possible that the lady you saw was not connecting to a wi-fi HOTSPOT but using some other type of wireless Internet connection to connect to the Internet.Ok THANKS

Solve : Whats a client and whats a host??

Answer»

Im in over my head, but willing to learn. I have 2 pcs and would like to connect them to share the internet and all files. I bought a router..its called Linksys. These r my 1st problems:
1. Which computer is the Client and which is the host?
2. I keep getting a message WHICK is as follows "local area connection 2 a network cable is unplugged" Its on both computers on the SYSTEM tray. I have gone over and over then connections several times and cant figure out what is not plugged in. Can someone give me an in depth discription (in EASY language) of what cables go where?
thank you...plz dont flame me to badly 1. Neither computer needs to be designated host or client. They are simply both connected to the router. With the router, there's no NEED to connect one computer to the other for shared Internet connection. Connect them both to the router.

2. Connect both computers to the router. The router is then connected to the modem. Did you use the cable that came with the modem to connect to the router? Are you using standard Cat5 cables to connect to the computers to the router?

Will your ISP give you any support in setting this up? I believe some modems require re-configuration to work with a router.

what is the problem, how can solve this error.

First guess: problem communicating through a firewall. Check firewall rules. When appeared the problem? Have you made some modifications?
Second (tip): have you checked the antivirus help? It says something about connecting to a web server? It is installed on a network computer and on the other computers you just have some lightweight clients? (We need a little more information, like: what antivirus are we talking about?)Thanks for your response. ok, I will check the firewall rules

this error on server. we have office scan antivirus 30 users. client side office scan is ok, it connected with the server. but server office scan management console it not open. when we click the office scan management console it give this error. we also contact with the office scan suppot, and following the steps as they send.

1. PCCSRV /..... folder permission (give FULL permission)
2. ISUER_SERVER2016 access rigts
3. DEFAULT web site -> home directory -> configuration -> application - > asp script
time out 1000 (increase asp script time out to 1000)

but it is not open the office scan management console, we unable to update
the office scan 7.3 antivirus.

regards.

trend micro office scan.
I looked on their site, but I couldn't find any infos. I will look forward.

PCSRV/ ---- it seems to me that on one computer you have to create a share, on which you should give full access RIGHTS
ISUER_SERVER2016 - access rights - on the server you have to create (or it's automatically made) a new user, ISUER_SERVER2016. Or any client is trying to connect to the server using the ISUER_SERVER2016 credentials. From here you have to give to this user access rights on the server (access computer from network, access rights on different folders etc).
default web site [...] - on the server part, you have to set up some settings in IIS or Apache (DEPENDING on your server).

My guesses... Ah, by the way, all of these hints are for the server, for the Office Scan server, they don't deal with the client. The Management console is not necessary for those options, I think it's for something else. Your original error message looks to me now like: "Antivirus web server it's not working" (it's the antivirus server in your local network, not the antivirus server on the web). They pointed you some things to check. Thanks for your response.

I am working as an administrator, I have full right to access the server, and I also check necessary rights to users to access server folders etc..

I have one more problem. I could not conect the server by the
remote desktop connection. it give error message that

" it showing the error in the Licensing Protocol. contact with your
administrator for support ?

Before that we can open the office scan console and remote desktop connection, but now office scan console and access to remote desktop
connection is not connecting with the server.

we are using windows 2000 server. what is Licensing Protocal error.
how can solve Licensing Protocal error ?

thanks and regards

Mateen

Something is going weird in your network. I hope you are not having problems with a virus.
Also, for using Remote Desktop you need licenses. If before "the big change" all worked fine, then you have virus problems OR an update destroyed your settings.

To solve Remote Desktop problem I sugest you to use RealVNC. Give it a try, it does the same thing as Remote Desktop.

Solve : PUT PORTS IN THE ROUTER?

Answer»

Hi im Evilcyborh and i have some problem with my game. the problem is when i try to host a game i can see the Internal IP not the EXternal IP i want to now how i put in the game the external IP. Some guys told me to open ports of the game but i dont now how.................. i go to my router menu and i see ports forwamation but never work with the ports i put. please help meFrom what I can understand is you are trying to forward ports in your router, right?

What game are you playing?

What router are you using?

If you need to see what your IP is, use http://www.dslreports.com/whois
this will give you your IP so you can tell other people where to go if you are hosting the game.

i know my external IP dont i cant change that IP in the game the game im playing is the counter strick 1.6
Maybe this will help you:
http://server.counter-strike.net/server.php?cmd=howto&show=linuxBut i dont now how to put the ports in the website say ports IN an OUT and i dont have that configuracion of ports i have ports start, ports end, and ports map. Expland to meQuote from: Evilcyborg on May 29, 2007, 01:51:21 PM

But i dont now how to put the ports in the website say ports IN an OUT and i dont have that configuracion of ports i have ports start, ports end, and ports map. Expland to me

Did you click viking's link ? ?

It pretty much explains everything...TrapperX asked you something and you ignored his question: your router is a [put your router model here]?

ports in, port out: you have to think you are in the router. ports in: the ports that the router accepts connections (your game ports will be here). ports out: your router sends data to those ports on the destination device.
So, as an EXAMPLE. You have a router and a computer "hidden" behind the router. You want to make a server, a game server, on the hidden computer and you need port forwarding. The game uses ports between P1 (it's a number here) and p2 (another number). Your computer (local) IP is a.b.c.d
On your router you create a new rule:
ports in: p1-p2
(the exact mode of defining that list DEPENDS on your router model. What router do you use?)
ports out: p1-p2
destination computer/device: a.b.c.d
(the router will send the data it receives from internet on his p1-p2 ports to the computer's p1-p2 ports. If your computer is not working, no connection is made. Observe: there are the same ports here, p1-p2 on router are the same NUMBERS as p1-p2 on your computer. You can use different combinations, but you have to know what you are doing.)

What router do you use? Maybe it has a link to a MANUAL, to help you with a more specific link; and with a few more specific advices.

Solve : At Wits End!?

Answer»

Hey Guys,

Really stuck on this one, I have broadband from AOL at which is 2Mb/s HA! well no its not its SUPPOSED to be!

Over the past month or so iv noticed a change in the SPEED of my net, so i decided to run some online download speed tests such as www.speedtest.net and it is telling me that i am only able to download at on av 130Kb/s which is rubbish! and i can quite believe this to be the correct speed as to how slow my net has become

I called up AOL and told them the situation and they ran some tests and they were adiment i was getting the full 2Mb of which i knew i wasent.. so i thaught OKAY mab its the DSL filters so i changed them all, still the same result, i connected the router directly into the PHONE socket with no other phone connected still the same, so went back to AOL and they sent BT to the exchange and they changed some 'parts' to fix the issue but its still the same problem.

However, When i log into the config settings in the router its self, its telling me its connected at roughly 1.5Mb/s but then its as if my computer is some what loosing the other 1370Kb/s its like this across the whole network and I really have no idea what is causing this issue.....

I have a Netgear WIRELESS Router DG834GT that is conected to 2 computers and a laptop. all 3 are running Win XP Home SP 2 AVG anti-virus and McAfee Personal Firewall

one computer is connected by cable and the other 2 are connected through wireless and all 3 produce the same results....

Ps I aslo tried changing the Router and still no luck, i also changed the cable connecting the router to the phone line

any ideas?

SodaAre you saying that your internet speed was faster before... and now it slowed down? If so, how much faster was it before?Maybe they changed some equipment...
Question: have you made the tests only in Windows? You should try the same tests using Linux (Knoppix, more exactly; it's simple to use and you will find FIREFOX down in the bar in seconds - in the worst scenario). Maybe your Windows is now in symbiose with some virus...
Yeah the speed has come down dramaticaly hence why i did the test, going to try using linux and i doubt its a virus because iv run scans on the computers also tunred them all off and only used one station at a time to test it and unless the virus has copied its self(better bleeden not have) I can't see it being that

Solve : Taking an exam!?

Answer»
Hi this is KIND of an off-topic post I suppose, but I hope it's in the right channel,
being that I require the help of network officianados.

I am taking a "brain-bench" for the company i work for. they will provide me an EXAM based on networking principals. My promotion depends on this exam. The clincher: they will allow me NO hints on study material. the company I work for is a telecom
who provide internet service for a huge customer base.

Fact is I am a novice in networking, but the job is entry level.
SoOo- what would you GUYS study?Start HereCisco documentation (in your case Cisco CCNA), WINDOWS network documentation, Linux network documentation will help you. But we don't know if you need general information, "network PHYSICAL" documentation or operating system documentation. I think a little from all. So, my recomendation is Cisco CCNA all the way.thanks guys : )

By the way i would just like to thank you for helping me so MUCH so far, and for being so dang PATIENT with me. Reading back through the posts, i can see that i've been a little difficult to work with, and i'm sorry about that... But anyway thanks so much for helpin me, you dont know how much it means to me I take it you're logged into the computer under the Administrator account, and connected to the internet?

Have you had a read of the Microsoft Help and Support regards ICS? (Go to the computer that you can check ICS, and click the blue text).Yes, I am connected to the internet and I am on the Administrator account. No I have not read the Microsoft Help and Support but I will. ThanksIt'd be a shame to not get this working/if it couldn't work.

Sorry if I've failed you...but until you give up I'll try to keep helping.Nah you haven't failed me, I wouldn't have ever GOTTEN this far by myself. And i'm not GIVING up yet either oh and i did read the help and support thing but it didnt really help any... so, what now? Maybe it's just impossible... with this computer anyway. do we give up or what? Sorry, been busy solving some of my own problems of late.

Has the blue-tooth dongle got a phone number for techie support? Might be worth a cheeky phone call to see if they can help set it up.Thanks, that's a good idea... I'll look for a number and I might call and ASK them about it

Solve : New Modem - No Connection?

Answer»

Hi,

I recently INSTALLED a new modem, and although the modem lights up as if it is WORKING properly, I cannot connect to the internet. Windows tells me that there is limited or no connection. I have tried resetting the modem, rebooting the computer, disabling and enabling the connection, turning off firewalls, and installing Windows update KB884020. I thought it was basically a plug and play modem, but it doesn´t seem to work. The manual isn´t very helpful, and the CD that CAME with the modem only had PDF files of the manual.... no drivers or anything. I tried looking for drivers on the internet, but could not find any. Any help would be much appreciated.

I´m using Windows XP and the modem is XAVi X8821r. No router. I tried typing in 192.168.1.1 into Internet Explorer as the manual suggests, but nothing came up.

Under the connection properties it tells me my IP is 169.xxx.xx.xxx and the subnet is 255.xxx.x.x if that is of any use at all. Oh, and when I try to "Repair" the connection, it just hangs at "Renewing IP Address." Any suggestions as to what the problem is? Thanks.
Did an internet search on the xavi brand and it seems like an off-brand modem. Lots of non-english website listed.

I'd take it back and get another brand-name one if possible.

Alan <>< I'm not familiar with this brand, but it appears to be a bridge/router COMBO. Go into its setup and set it to router mode, then enable its DHCP server. Be sure to apply any changes. On your computer, in the connection properties, set the routers IP address as the DHCP server and the gateway.

Solve : Want to secure Shared external harddrive.?

Like I said before: it is a small home network only used inside our home. (But white detailed info about a company sow it needs to be well protected.)
The problem is: I'm just 16 and 3 monts ago I only knew the basics of computering.
I'm learning fast but I'm still a beginner.
Sow would you please explain me how I can collect the info you needed.

For the IP addr: I do believe that you'r only trying to help but this is a public site...
And the beginning of all the IP addr I've seen sow far are all the same if Not I'll tell you.
Is that GOOD enough to solve the prob?

The router of Telenet is controlled by telenet (the company who provides us Internet and digital tv.)
Sow The router of telnet is only 2 Internet connections 1 for our Wir Internet and one for our Digital TV.
The Wir Internet connection is then through a cable CONNECTED to our Linksys router.

Jonas Your last post tells everything I want to know.
I am not interested about the IPs that the ISP gave to you. Just about the local area network IPs. For example I won't tell you my public IP, that was given by my ISP; but I can tell you without any problem that my internal network uses IPs from 192.168.54).

If only the wireless access point and the router Linksys are in your network than your problem is located here. Most probably on the access point.

You can't have 2 identical IP's in your local network, unless some routers are involved. I hope you just MADE an error when you told that. Please check. If it is as you said (two or more devices with the same IP) and no error messages are thrown, than you have 2 separate (distinct) networks.

I did not asked you the most basic question (shame on me): do all computers respond at ping command, no matter if they are attached to access point or SIMPLY to the wired router? Or asked diferently: can you ping the router Linksys (the wired one) from any of the computers? Pay attention to firewall rules on each computer and the security settings on router, they may deny your ping packets.
Do you have a wired switch connected to your wired router? What model?
Here Is what I know:
I think that they are indeed two separated Networks See Attach.
My internal IP is 192.168.92.1 for both the router and the access point.
I'm beginning to realize that that is my problem.
Isn't it?
But how can I change that?
And wouldn't that have any effect on the Linksys security program?
and Yes both the router and the access point respond well on a ping command.

Thanks for helping

Jonas

[cleaning up - attachment deleted by admin]Looks like I have to make 1 network of the 2 that now exists.
But how?
Should I buy a new router to connect those 2?
Thanks in advance

Jonas Sorry for my late answer... I had not time yesterday or today to re-read the wir2 manual.
No, you do not need another router, you simply need to use the same ssid for both the wireless router and wireless access point.
I will find the informations and I will tell you what I find. Thanks

Jonas I'm trying to find info on the web about how I'm suppos to set the SSID of WIR2 but I can't find anything.
After the EXAMS I'll be able to search if there is any Book that came with the access point.
I don't realy know the name of it.

Solve : Ethernet adapter disapeared?

Answer»

Reinstalled XP Home on Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop. Cant GET a wireless connection now. Called cable company, modem is fine. Called Dell, they want money, so I said forget it.

My cable company had me go thru control panel / system / hardware / device manager/ and we found that I dont have a Local Area Connection. He told me to get an ethernet adapter from Dell. Went to website, and it says to use the Dell Inspiron Resource CD. Well, I dont have one. I bought the laptop second hand and the CD they gave me with it, was for a dimension. I didnt realize. It DOESNT solve the problem. Any one out there have this CD that they could zip and email to me?

Typical.

If you have an internet cable, attatch on end to the router and the other end to your computer and see what happens.
I don't THINK anyone here would send a CD, sorry about that.If you return to Dell's site and enter the service TAG# on the bottom of the laptop it will show your machine and what drivers you NEED for it....

If this is not fruitful try the Dell support Forums which have a ton of info.::)thank you to all who replied to my post. It is now working. Still going to try and find a copy of that resource cd though. they are always useful!!!!!No problem. Just stop by if you have any questions or problems.

This is just the 1st problem. The computers r NOT communicating with each other nor can i get the old comp to share my dsl.
I have sp 2 on both. and tcp and ip is on automatic on both comps.

[cleaning up - attachment deleted by admin]hello Echo Echo Echo lol,

On reading your post I am not sure of your connection configuration. Let me know if this is how you have it set up. The dsl comes in to the house and goes to the router in the internet port. Then one cable goes to each computer to connect to the ethernet port. If this is correct then you shouldnt have any problem connecting to the ethernet from either computer. If not then I will need more detail as to the model of the router and how you have it configured. For local file and PRINTER sharing then there are a few more steps to take. first you have to turn on file and printer sharing. this is accomplished by right clicking on the local area connection and placing a check mark in front of the file sharing line. second you will need to set up a workgroup for your home network. to do this right click on the my computer icon and select the properties then select the computer name tab. click the change button on the page , make sure that you have a name in the computer name and add a name to the workgroup name other than MSHOME like ECHOHOUSE . Click ok then allow your computer to restart. follow the same procedures on the other computer.
Once both computers are restarted then open my computer and right click on the drive or folder that you want to share and select sharing and security. select a name for your share or leave the default there and click apply. you will need to use this procedure on both computer if you want to have access to both computers from either computer. to share a printer then open the control panel and click on printers right click on the printer that you want to share and then select sharing and security. select a name for your share or leave the default there and click apply. you should now be able to access the information from either computer by clicking on my network places. Ain't no big deal, Robert. You're welcome to come back any time. Recently there has been some controversy about displaying links in signatures that are are of commercial nature. You can set it up in your profile so that it displays and icon under your name. Welcome aboard.ok..well 1st problem is solved. Which is the above stated problem. Turns out that 1 of the wires was bad. So i went to the store and bought a new 1. As soon as i turned on both computers i got a notice saying something like 1 computer "saw the other" and visa versa.
Now both computer can get onto the internet at the same time. I went ahead and opened "my computer" and told both computers to share the "c" drive. What do i do now? I want to be able to access the other older computer and bring files and pictures over into the newer 1? Where do i go to "see" the other computers drive? I went to "control panel" "network and internet connections" then "network connections" once there i went over to the menu on the left and hit "My network places" and the page is blank..nothing is there. So...where do i go?
Im sorry to bother yall with basic stuff..
Disregard the above for now i have encounterded a problem on the old computer. When i go to "my computer" and click on Share and then "apply i immediately get "internet explorer has encountered a problem" message. I tried it 5 times and 5 times i get the same thing. The new compter shared with no problem. Any ideas?

Go into network settings and select this adapter (the one you want should be preceded by tcp/ip) and set it to ACQUIRE IP address automatically. Then under the gateway tab, set it to the IP address of the router.
how do I find the IP address of the router?
I looked over the Rhine ethernet, I found that the Network ID was blank. Where can I find out what the Network ID is?
If you don't have access to the router, go to one of the other machines and open a command window. Enter the command ipconfig /all. It will likely be listed under gateway. At a guess, i would say it is 192.168.1.1The gateway address was 192.168.60.2. I typed this in. It used to tell me that there was no internet connection, it does not say that anymore. Now it says page cannot be displayed so maybe were getting somewhere. Do I need to configure the TC/IP Rhine ethernet, which I found by scrolling down past the network adapters?Go to control panel/internet and under the connection tab tick "connect to the internet using local area network".When I configure the Rhine II and click ok it tells me to insert the windows 98' CD. The CD does nothing, it does not have the Network adapter on it. I think my best bet is to download another network adapter and go from there. Any suggestions of which one will work for me, and where I can download it at. I appreciate the help. You cannot download an adapter, only drivers. The adapter in your machine is what you have to work with. If you have downloaded a mess of unnecessay drivers, I suggest you remove them. You may need to start from scratch. One thing you can try now - go into device manager and remove all network adapters. Then go into contral panel and double "add new hardware". See if windows detects your nic and loads drivers for it.Quote from: 2k_dummy on June 16, 2007, 12:11:53 PM

I didn't want to say too much, since I'm not real confident on this topic - but to me, after reading that post, it sounds like he has a LOT of different drivers installed.
Read that post again..... what do you think?... am I CORRECT?

Back then, I was wondering if it would be good ADVICE to tell him to uninstall them all, and then just reinstall the one he needs.

Solve : ADSL+2 Modem?

Hi, I like to connect two computers together via crossover cable. Do i need to have two ethernet CARDS in ONE of the computers? My modem is Siemens SpeedStream 4200. When i first install the Modem i had the option of connecting to the internet via USB or Erthernet cable, i took the Ethernet way, so at the moment what is the best way to connect with this modem ? If i reinstal my internet config. to using USB can i connect the crossover cable that way, since the RJ-45 port on the back of the modem will be free. Any advice will be good, this is starting to realy confuse me, im going in circles, thank you.http://subscriber.communications.siemens.com/documents/4x00UG_English.pdf

page 11/73

3) If desired, use standard 10/100 CAT5 Ethernet cables to connect additional computers to the Ethernet ports on the Router.
But I think you need a straight Ethernet NETWORK cable ("standard Ethernet") and not a cross over cable. In fact... It depends on router. Try to see if it works with crossover cable and if it does your PROBLEM is solved.
If you want to use only 2 computers you may try their advice. If you want to use crossover cable between the 2 computers then yes, in a computer you need 2 network cards (and one proxy program - ICS, Jana SERVER etc).I cant open that link getting an ERROR 404 !I found that link from google:
http://www.google.ca/search?q=speedstream+4200+manual&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
And you are right, the link is now invalid
But, as I told you (exactly from the manual), you may try to use both ports, USB and Ethernet for connecting 2 computers. And see if it works right.

Solve : Student computers need to be restricted?

Answer»

I am unsure where to go to clamp down rights/permissions on the "amazing" things students can do to computer workstations. The student computers are on a LAN using SQL server. The workstations are running Windows XPpro. When I tried to make the student logon a "restricted user," some of the interactive educational programs housed on the server were unable to launch. In the past, students have been given full admin rights to the local workstation in order for these educational programs to operate. The long and short of it is after spending tons of time reconditioning 40+ student computers (i.e. uninstalling non-educational programs; running disk cleanup & defragging which took most workstations over 1 hr. for ea. task; installing upwards of 80+ MS updates to a single computer x 40; STANDARDIZING desktops/screensavers, ETC.) I'd like to now set the student's rights/permissions to restricted user on the front-end, but still be able to launch the programs needed from the server.

Where and how can I best accomplish this final task to protect all that's been done to keep the student computers running more efficiently? What you migh want nto do is make all the accounts limited but have the educational programs run as an administrator

Al968Quote from: al968 on June 01, 2007, 04:53:48 AM

What you migh want nto do is make all the accounts limited but have the educational programs run as an administrator

Al968

And how do you do that?
For the "Run as..." command you have to know the administrator password. Or should he start on 40 computers that program, walking from one to another and typing the password? It will take him 30 minutes for the task... At least.
[emailprotected], I imagine that your network now it is part of Active Directory (if I remember right). You have to play with the user settings until you find that you can use the program with a limited account (but that may need write access to some folders, to the program folder etc) or you may find it is impossible to do that.
First thing that I would check are the security permissions on folders for that account, there may be folders INACCESSIBLE (with parts of the educational programs) even for reading to the restricted account. You don't say what the "server" OS is. Is it 2000 Server / 2003 Server? If either one of those you can create an OU (Organizational Units), move the students in it then create a GPO (Group Policy Object) for that OU.

Alan <>< It is a 2003 SQL OS. I will try your suggestion. In one of the computer labs, there is only one interactive educational program which opens just fine with the student logon at the workstation designated as a "restricted user" and placed in the admin group on the backend (folder on server). Was this ok or should I go back and do what you suggested? I tried this same set-up in the other computer LAB, but there are two other interactive educational programs when opened, the student cannot "write" to them. It's possible there is a temp file/folder on the local workstation that might need admin access to interact properly. I am just not too sure at present and ran out of time last time while attempting the rights/permissions issue.

Another thing, I've scheduled disk cleanup every Friday on all student computers. For the lab where students are restricted users, I had to give them admin rights for that task only and the utility will launch and perform. However, this was not true about disk defragmenter even though I gave the restricted user admin privileges for that utility as well, but the utility still would not launch and the message received kept saying you had to have admin rights to run this utility. Do you suppose to run/execute disk defragmenter on C:\ the utility goes by the logon? Of course, both utilities run just fine in the computer lab wherer students still have full admin rights at the local workstation. Do you have any suggestions in this area as well?

I appreciate everyone's time and effort to help me arrive at the best set-up for student computers at our school. Right now, half of the computers are used with our ESL program and the other half with our HS students. It's the HS students I'm most worried about. Shortly, we will be adding a third computer lab for our LVN students. They, generally, should be rather trustworthy.

Anyway, thanks again for any help!Be careful with the admin roles on your network. You will soon cry after your settings if you give the administrator credentials to many.

If you are talking about "full rights" on certain folders (NOT system folders, I hope), than the possible DAMAGE is much smaller. Which way did you go, administrator for some (many) users on the server or full rights on a few folders for some users? I would choose folder rights to many others than administrator rights to many others (and I strongly advise you to do so).

Concerning the disk cleanup, why don't you create a scheduled task with the administrator account credentials? Although I admit you can find a better solution than using the administrator account... Create another account and give him administrator credentials = include it in administrator accounts. I know, it seems to be exactly like the original administrator account. I will look if your problem can be solved otherwise.

On scheduled tasks, when you create a new task, it let you choose what account to use when the task will run. You can specify a different time of the day, it does not matter if the user is logged in or not. The user account has to have the necessary rights to access the diferent folders for the application to be run.In my experience (I set up a network for a troubled boys school) I found that if you give any student admin rights he/she will exploit it for all it's worth. That school has a networked program that the students have to write to but with the OU in place and the proper GPO set up, they could do their schoolwork and not get into any mischief. I had the desktops locked down so all they could do was a word processor & the school program...nothing else. No changing the desktop / Internet access / no "run" command or DOS access. Strict I know but necessary.

One suggestion: if possible set up a test system with a server and 1 or 2 student systems and test your setup there. NEVER test on production systems.
BIG Bozo-nono

Good luck!

anyways more info what where you doing when it "all of the sudden" stopped working ?I am TRYING to connect to both a motorola cable modem or my linksys wireless-B router at my home. I have another laptop that can connect to both of these, HENSE being able to post here. As of all of sudden stopped working I came home from work and couldnt connect to the internet just msn messanger. About a week or so before that I had tried setting up a remoted desktop on it from my work computer but wasnt able to get the connection to work. Then a week later couldnt get online. Solve : Internet is driving me crazy!?

Answer»

Lately when I've TRIED to download a FILE it either goes CORRUPT, or it takes a long time to download. I have a FEELING it has something to do with my network card because I'm pretty sure its a cheap, bad brand card. I am on a wireless network but no other computer on the network is having this problem. I'm not sure what the problem is but I have a feeling its the network card.

Computer Specs will be an attached file. (Everest Report) I use Mozilla Firefox as a browser, and I haven't TESTED the downloading with Internet Explorer.

Thanks In advance,

-Mike

[cleaning up - attachment deleted by admin]Replace the card instead of troubleshooting...they are pretty reasonable.

Solve : ip/subnetting qustion?

Answer»

ok here goes I need help to get some extra cred on a test I was told the fallowing

ip = 198.64.5.63

the subnet is = 255.255.240.0

I need to find out the ip of the 19th computer on the 8th subnet ><

I have no clue how to do it and any help would be nice plz give me a full "you get this by doing this explanation"

and no this in no way will be abused it is a purely theoretical question told to us by our teacher

oh and by the way hi

ok so now I have done a little work and gotten

11111111.11111111.11110000.00000000

this is the subnet in binary ..... lol but now what ><

we have come up with a 4,094 ip range .... but how would I express 4,094 in ip form ?

it cant be 198.64.5.4094 <<-----right ?_? bahhhh so confused ><

but is any of this right ?198 => network class C
The subnet mask tells us that we are talking about network summarization.
SM = 255.255.240.0 => we have 2^4 (2 at 4 power = 16) networks class C. Each network has 254 clients (maximum), so 2^4 * 254 = 4096 maximum possible hosts using that subnet mask. 4096 and not 4094! Maybe he tells you about 4094, so that you leave alone the 0 and the 255 addresses, according to your network specifications. I have to check that part, I do not remember any constraint with the 0 and 255 addresses when we are talking about network summarization... Yes, you can talk about this constraint when you are talking about 198.64.5 network, where 198.64.5.0 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 means the network and 198.64.5.255 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 means all computers from that network (subnet).
240 = 1 1 1 1 0 0 0 0 => the last 4 bits are different, they could be different for networks included according to this subnet mask. Hence the 2^4 (2 at power 4) networks class C.
In the subnet mask you are interested only by the part 240 (which means 4 bits of 1 and 4 bits of 0).
240 also means that the 4 bits of the 3rd byte are the same. If you are using the IP 198.64.5, the first 4 bits are 0 for all of your networks included in this summarization.
240 = 1 1 1 1 0 0 0 0
5= 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 1
Only the last 4 bits change. So, you have networks from 198.64.0 to 198.64.16 included in this.
8th subnet:
198.64.0
198.64.1
198.64.2
...
198.64.7 (we started the count at 0, remember?)
We have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 for this subnet, so, the 19th computer has the IP of 19 (here we start counting computers at 1). Your 19th computer has the IP 198.64.7.19

Shame on me, I forgot so much... I will check if it is correct what I am writing here. I remember the term summarization, I remember about route agregation, but I forgot about them... This summer I have to study."etwork has 254 clients (maximum), so 2^4 * 254 = 4096 maximum possible hosts "

I put 4094 to rep the useabel ip's with in the subnet !

I am happy you have taken the time to reply thanks but I still am a bit ?_?

so to sum up one more time

we have a ip of 198.63.5.63

and a subnet of 255.255.240.0

he told us that the subnet was a different class then the ip ip=c sub=b

as to why he had to make this such a HARD a$$ qustion I dont know

any more help would be ....helpfull

take me throu step by step eg:

ip= 198.64.XX.XX <---- and explane

>< god I ha8 net working !!

so you are saying the ip is >>> 198.64.7.19 <<<< this would be the 19th ip of the 8th sub yah ^_^ ?

as you said make sure you are correct and get back to me

-thanks once again!

edit found answer.............

198.64.133.83

why this is the ip I still have no clue any insite would be nice
I don't have much to say... If you want to know the answers then LEARN, it's your homework, not ours.
I won't say you everything more, you have to know something before asking for some indications. I won't write a manual for yourself, I think it's clear to you that.

A question: from where did you get that IP? 198.64.133.83?"well lmao thanks for the "do you own PUCKING work speech"

this was just a purely extra cred assignment and it was ment for my class to not be able to get the answer....

I was just looking for someone to impart some knowledge on me because unlike the useless masses when I get an answer, I look at how and why that is the answer and I learn from it .....

as for the final sulotion lmao it is dumb as all *censored* imo

my networking proff says its 198.64.133.83 but then the other one came up with what I had gotten a while back while pulling out my HAIR

198.64.128.19

the REASONING behind this is that eatch sub net can have 4096 computer systems so the 19th on the 8th would be

198.64.128.19 assuming you went from 198.64.1.0 - and up from there

now my other proff say that if the starting ip was in fact 198.64.5.63

then you would add the 5+128 = 133 19+63=83 .............

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
to me that seems like there is no "real" logic behind it because .128.0 <--is a place holder for a vary large number of computer systems .... but to just GO and add 5?...

why in the *censored* would you ?

-__________________________________________________________________

so to sum up yes this is something I should have learned on my own but... it is not something covered in the course nor would I have the foggiest idea how to do it unless I was pointed in the right derection ..... if someone asks for help then lay it out for them tell them the steps needed to be fallowed because thats what I was asking for I did not go "I need this ANSWER now !!" I asked for someone to go over the logical steps leading up to the answer and the answer itself so that I could better understand the process...

in the end I found my question baffling but thanks to this form for helping as just as you guys could

thanks for all the help I can't be your teacher, my friend I have to study for myself and if I am able I will help others. Or I will try to help others...
If you want to find these informations so you could understand, you may try on any search engine with:
ip supperneting
subnet mask
route summarization
network agregating
route agregating
(etc)

http://www.subnet-calculator.com/cidr.php
IP address: you have to enter your IP
CIDR netmask: your subnet mask
I do not understand your teacher's answer.

I understand where I was mistaken: I was subnetting further the subnets. In that "right" case (in my opinion, considering the teacher's answer), the 8th subnet would be 198.64.112.0/20 (that 20 = 255.255.240.0 and it means 20 bits of 1 in the subnet mask). This you can tell him, I think he is wrong here. When he makes supernetting he considers whole ranges of network, he can't jump some "just because". He took an IP and added a number of networks, he did not work with network ranges (error! He should consider only the network address and not the host address).
He did not added 5 to 128 (2^7) but added 128 to 5 (8th subnet would be 2^7). I'm wondering how he will find the 10th subnet, the 11th subnet... I'm sure though that he has a shorthand. But it should be applied corectly!
He added that 19 to IP because 19+63<254. Again, it's a mistake. He should count the 19th computer of the subnet, he can't just simply mess network addresses with host addresses

I launched the question to some of my friends, some work with supernetting, summarization, the whole stuff. I should receive a correct answer today. If you wait for me to learn... There will be a few weeks before I re-read the theory.

Solve : Force A Remote Share fo a drive?

Answer»

Hi
I have admin rights on our network. Windows 2003 servers and XP Pro clients. Is there a way to force a share of a REMOTE DRIVE? We have problems at the moment with USB FLASH drives.
When a user plugs in a USB Drive I need to be able to have this shared. Is there a way to do this with Group Policies?

Any thoughts would be great

The card sometimes works for a short while almost as if by accident and then the problems recur.
Do help me with the same.

Have you checked the network cable?
Are your sure that the other network port/connector is working fine? (the network cable has 2 ends and I mean the connector from the other side, not your network card).

From your description it seems that you have connected the computer to a USB network device, a Huawei ROUTER. Your VIA card has an 169 IP. Is there a cable connected to your network card? What network do you have (more general words about your network would help). Is there any DHCP server, in the network part with Ethernet cables? (start->run->ipconfig /all >c:\ip.txt and paste here the c:\ip.txt content).

HEY! Back off the CRT crowd, not all of us have Mommy and Daddy around to buy us the new flash 19" LCD TFT screens, and not all of us have more money than sense.

But to the OP, have you tried installing the driver that originally came with the machine, it'll be on a disc you got with the computer, seeing as you can't connect for long enough to d/l the newer ones.

If not, then try d/ling it on another machine, and burning it to disk, and doing things that way.Hi all,
Thanks for your help.Really appreciate you all taking some time out to help others. I tried reinstalling the driver many times but nothing much happens. I am trying to configure a LAN (Home Network ) with my laptop. The laptop has got no problems with its network card. The Huawei router is for accessing the net ( Broadband).
It works intermittently , how I dont know , the only thing is that when some trouble occurs ... the LAN cord when not connected on both ends still shows that LAN is connected and working properly when infact it should be showing that "A cable is unplugged ".

PS: Why would one need to buy an LCD if a CRT would suffice . My personal experience with a CRT is better than LCD .... has reduction in clarity when viewed at angles. And we dont need 50 " screens for doing coding or some other basic work.abt the TFT screens ... personally no need ...wud get one when I earn some bucks myselfI would try a brand new PCI NIC card...there pretty reasonable.Ditto Patio. Replace the NIC.

Oh, well... Not my "Mommy and Daddy" bought me LCDs. Your EYES, your money, your opinion. I strongly advise to replace that old monitor with a newer one, preferably LCD. NOTE: this is my opinion! I can tell you that even LCD's have flicker, and if you dont' have good hardware you may even say that's it's much more annoying than the old crt. In this summer I will check a BenQ T720 with a Nvidia GeForce MX 440, on a Duron 700 which is 7 years old (the Duron computer/videocard, not the LCD).

A 19" LCd it's near 200 USD (I suppose you live in the US; I'm living in Romania, a poor country in east Europe), a 17" it's close to 100 USD (and in Romania the prices are higher than in USA). A 15" CRT you won't even find here. Oh, well, maybe at 2nd hand - MAYBE! The smallest monitors I see are 17" crt's at least. Which have a viewable area of an 15" LCD, which costs 100 USD - in Romania, where a 7600 gt it's about 150 USD, very close to 200 USD and over.

Solve : computer vs laptop?

Answer»
i worked with a desktop, it crapped out and had to reformatted, i then purchased a laptop and connected to modem through ethernet. i cant connect my desktop back and run the laptop wireless again. what happened? PLEASE explain... If the device you are using to connect to internet is a modem and in it's documentation it does not specify that it has a router or that 2 or more computers can be connected to it at the same time, then you NEED to buy a:
OPTION 1) router, a wired one. You will have to set it up (it's very SIMPLE)
option 2) network card. For this option to work you have to set up ICS on the computer in which you place the SECOND network card.

Have you used the wireless connection of the laptop before? I don't get this part from what you said.

Solve : Connecting laptop to internet?

Answer»

I have a Dell desktop COMPUTER which connects to the internet via cable. I recently bought a used Compaq Armada laptop. I want to know how to CONNECT my laptop to the internet without having wires running all over the house from the cpu to the laptop. Sorry if this sounds stupid but I don't know much about this sort of thing. Any HELP would be appreciated!I'm running Windows XP and Internet Explorer browser. You can use wireless connection. If the laptop has a wireless network adapter.

You have 2 options:

1) ACQUIRE a wireless router (if you don't have already a router at home) that has ethernet PORTS also; if you have already a router, a wired one, than you need an access point - be careful, pay attention at what are you buying

or

2) acquire a wireless network card for your Dell desktop computer and set-up ICS on it.Look at the FAQ on networking

Solve : Internet slow, No Malware, PLEASE HELP?

Answer»

I just reformatted a few weeks back due to a very mean Trojan. After I got Windows XP Installed, I noticed the internet was slow. I have an adsl connection. And right now, it's just a little bit faster than dial up. When I run a traceroute the 1st hop always times out. I do not have a router. Just an external adsl modem. I will include a hijackthis log and a traceroute log. Any help is really appreciated. Thanks, Logan.

1. Download VundoFix and save it to your desktop.
2. Run VundoFix and click on Scan For Vundo.
3. Once it's done scanning, click on Remove Vundo.
4. When it prompts you to remove the files, click on Yes.
5. Your desktop will go blank as it's removing files. Don't worry, this is normal.
6. It will prompt you to restart your computer, so click OK.
7. When your computer is turned back on, your problem should be gone.
8. The program normally produces a Vundofix.txt file. Please locate this file and paste the contents in your next post.

And then, just to be thorough...
1. Download VirtumundoBeGone and save it to your desktop.
2. Reboot into Safe Mode.
3. Once you are in Safe Mode, run VirtumundoBeGone and follow the instructions.
4. Exit when it has finished and reboot back into normal mode. Vundo should now be removed from your computer.

Download ComboFix and save it to your desktop. Run the program and READ its disclaimer (it's fairly short) and MAKE sure you really pay attention to what it says. Follow the prompts and when finished, it will produce a log at C:\ComboFix.txt. Go ahead and post that here. Note: Don't click on the window while it's running; this may cause stalls.

when i click debug ,it stop the connection of the dial up but the ICON of the dial up in the task bar it is there and when i click status, it dosent appear. pls help me about this

when i DIDNT debug the error, another error message (svchost error) appear again saying "the exceprion unknown sofware exception (0xc0000409 occured in the application at locaion 0x5b86a3c0".I used to have a similar problem using dial-up. My modem (generic and exteral) would MAKE a click sound (like it did when it would disconnect), but my connection would litterally freeze, and I could not do anything with the connection icon and any program that would attempt to use the connection would also freeze. Not that this is of any importance now that I have cable, but I was just curious if anybody knew why this used to happen.

Sorry if I'm hyjacking the POST by ASKING this.so what is the problem with this? You may try to reinstall your drivers for the modem, bonf182.
my modem dont need driver becouse the mother board already detects the modem. You need to give more info.

Did you change something before it started happening?
Did you just get dial-up and have had it happen ever since?
Did you get a new modem?

Too much information is better than not enough.
