Solve : Remote Desktop Name?

Answer»

We have a NETWORK of about 30 computers all running Windows XP Pro and a server running Server 2003. I MAINTAIN the PC's alot through Remote Desktop. Just recently, it won't allow me to CONNECT to some of the PC's using their name but I can connect using the IP address. I know that has something to do with the DNS name resolution but don't know how to FIX it.

Solve : no network connection after re-installing windows xp?

Answer»

We re-installed Windows XP using our system CD and now there is no network connection recognized when pulling up the connection information window from Control Panel. We had time warner cable over to LOOK at it and they said it's to do with the computer, they can't fix it. Modem/router is connected and working fine, the other computers in the house have internet connection. The Cable guy said the computer simply doesn't recognize that there is a network/internet card, so when pulling up the 'network connection' information there's just nothing in the computer.

How can I fix this? I have tried telling Windows to "setup an internet connection now" but it can't do it because it doesn't have the ability to sense a dial tone.Is the modem driver installed? Is the NIC (network adapter card) driver installed? You don't have to worry about dial tone, you don't use a modem for pstn = phone line, you use a "cable connection".
Can you see the network adapter in Device Manager?

I just got off the phone with a Dell Tech person and they have HELPED me get up to the point of the Network Adapter problem, they gave me somet hings to TRY and are going to call back in an hour or two. But no there is no Network Adapter anything in the Device Manager. The Ethernet Controller under Other DEVICES still has a YELLOW ! next to it. I have tried to install the drivers for both the Network and the Ethernet but they take me in circles and end up with me having to go online to search for appropriate drivers, but I can't go online

Solve : Connection slow to major sites?

Answer»

I have high speed cable connection. I've tested speed with their tech. support ONLINE and it is normal 493 kps outbound 4.83 inbound. Don't have high cpu usage or processing running abnormal. Running windows XP home edition - Internet Explorer 6.
When I go to favorites I CLICK on Ebay or Google and the time it takes to connect is all of a sudden like I was back on dial-up. Sometimes I get the unable to connect message & refresh and I connect. I've pinged the SITES, some come back timed out.
some come back 3 of 4 successful some, all 4 pings successful. Once I'm in the site with a message board like this site it is slow loading the next page also. I done diag. on the Microsoft site for corrupt files, all ok Help does anyone know what it could be.
It just started yesterday and I haven't downloaded anything NEW or changed any settings.
Try downloading and running CCleaner (without the Yahoo! toolbar).

Or maybe your computer has spyware or a virus on it. Some good free antivirus/antispyware programs are AVG free, AVG antispyware, Ad-Aware SE Personal, and Spybot Search and Destroy.

Solve : Copying 'MusicMatch' files from PC to laptop?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP and Internet Explorer browser. My question is I have a programme called MusicMatch which stores & plays all our CDs etc. I would like to COPY this programme/files from the PC to our laptop, rather than have to copy all the CD's again. I have gotten as far as using the Ethernet network cable to connect the two but not sure what to do next - can someone help? I have also installed the same version of MusicMatch onto the laptop. As you can see I have 'basic' computer knowledge only - so any replies please try to keep the technical jargon to a limit! Hmmm I had a similar problem all I did is I used an EXTERNAL HD copied the stuff on then hooked it up to the other computer.. That probably didn't help you though. You should be able to stream it over to your laptop though..You have to create the same user on the laptop and pc, with the same password (NOT a blank password, it won't WORK). If it is the Administrator account then you have to use the same password.
After that, disable the "Use simple file sharing": open a folder, then GO to the menu Tools->Folder options->View and uncheck the LAST record, the "Use simple file sharing" (I assume you have Windows XP on both computers).
Next, see in which folder you saved the melodies. Right click on it, Share.
If you created a new user, you have to add the user in the tab Security, and the user need Read rights.
After that... You have to see what IPs your computers are using: start->run->cmd
and in the command prompt window type:
ipconfig /all
The same from the other computer
They should have some similar IP's, only the last number differing.
From the laptop:
start->run->//the_IP_of_the_desktop
and you should be able to find your share. More, you should be able to copy your files from PC.

PS. If you give to administrator account a password (highly recomended), don't forget it (highly unrecomended). I repeat, DO NOT FORGET THAT PASSWORD.Thanks Viking, I will give this a go and let you know what happens!

Cheers. Hi, me again, 2 questions:

Yes my PC is WIndows XP, but there is no 'use simple file sharing' option available under Tools, Folder Options, View.. what do I do there?

Secondly, what does an IP look like? Is it the IP address (which is a series of 4 numbers)?

Thanks

Solve : Linksys router question?

Answer»

I have my router set up to my MAIN COMPUTER and am trying to add a laptop to it. The laptop has no IP address b/c its hard drive is brand new, and my understanding was that through the router I could get this new laptop to connect to the internet via the other computer. I have tried and tried to set up the laptop but cannot get it to work? How do I go about SETTING up the laptop to work with the router? (Or do I have this all screwed up?)I am going to assume you use windows XP. If you do This should be pretty easy.

2 questions:

1- does the hardware all work properly? this is a moot exercise if the ethernet card, wireless cared or router are broken.

2- what are your network settings?
to resolve the latter let's check out your control pannel:
START---> CONTROL PANEL
L---> NETWORK CONNECTIONS
L----> LAN (rigt click + properties)

In the WINDOW that opens, choose "TCP IP " from the list of availabilities.
click "properties once it is chosen".

Here are the options for aquiring your cmpt an IP address. be sure that windows is being told to collect a DNS address as well as IP address AUTOMATICALLY. this should provide your Cmpt w/ the necesssary IP address.

Interesting....you could delete this topic or try to explain the question. Perhaps some of us here would know what you are talking about.I bet I would know, I use Tiscali too so the question would have some MEANING to me.RIGHT...

1:I upgraded my broadband to 8mbps
2: I was told my speed will deffer from time to time with in the 1ST ten days
3: I was wondering if i could actaully exceed my old speed of 2.3mbps while my line was being tested for the new connection as my speed as already dropped from 2.3mbps to 1.7mbps , , .
4: I cnt understand why they need to drop my speed in order to give me more
5: Here is there covering letter i had sent via email

Dear Customer,

Your upgrade to Tiscali Max Unlimited is now complete.

IMPORTANT - Tiscali Max Unlimited customers

Please REMEMBER during the first 10 days whilst your maximum line rate is being established you are likely to experience some variations in speed and short breaks in your connection. This is normal and we would therefore request that you please refrain from calling Tiscali Technical Support until after the initial 10 day stabilisation period Quote

Give it time, see if it improves. How long has it been since you upgraded?Oh im not to fussed about it going slow , its just im watching a lot of online movies latley and they buffer , and if there is a tiny break in the connection BYE BYE FILM

i upgraded yesterday but as soon as i did , BANG speed went down hahaJust wait for the 10 days they suggest.
They'll be performing tests etc to make sure your line can handle it and so on.
If it's not stabilized in 10 days, get back to them and ask what's going on, for now you'll have to live with it.Don't worry man, I FEEL for you

A few months AGO, there was an earthquake couple hundred miles away. It destroyed several undersea Internet cables. My friends and I were stuck without internet for almost a month.

Solve : computer slow only at home, only certain times?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a dell laptop that I brought to college with me and currently am using it at home for the summer. At home we have another laptop and a desktop connected to cable internet through a Netgear wireless router. Now that I am home, about half the times I am on my computer, everything runs extremely slow and when I hit ctrl alt del it says the cpu usage is at 100% (when it is running normally its usually around 2-5%). When this happens, not only do internet programs run slowly, everything on my computer does. I never had this problem at college and the internet was very slow there. Also the internet frequently just stops working here and we have to unplug the router and plug it back in again to get it back. Is this a problem with my internet service or my router, or SOMETHING else?
THANKSI'm pretty sure it's the router. You have two other computers hooked up to the same router so it may cause a little lag.I don't beleve that it is your internet connection.
Because then it wouldn't effect the CPU usage.
But can you give us some more info like:
What OS are you using, Did you made any changes before it STARTED happening, Does all the computers on your network have the problem,...

Jonas Quote from: Beta Quadrant on June 11, 2007, 07:20:10 PM

I'm pretty sure it's the router. You have two other computers hooked up to the same router so it may cause a little lag.

How would a router effect CPU usage?!

Better advice: CHECK for infections.

Spy-ware, viruses, Trojans, the like. If the CPU usage is at 100% when you're doing nothing, that indicates something is happening, regardless of whether or not you're doing it, or you can see it.

Look for help with virus problems. Should help. Also, try getting rid of any applications from the system tray (LOWER right) that you don't use...like MSN Msgr.
I agree the chance of an infection is big. here is a list of programs you should try:
- AVG anti-virus
- AVG anti-spyware
- Ccleaner
- Superantispyware
All these programs are free!
I suggest to run Ccleaner first this will remove the most.
Then just let the rest run and let us know

Visit: http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

There are many of these type of sites online, that one is just very simple and straightforward.

Try a couple DIFFERENT servers from the list in the column on the left.

Post your results here.
You can just copy-n-paste it.
Note that there is a difference in kbps and KB/sec.
Just copy the two lines of info that appear under "Last result" after each run.

With that info, some folks here will interpret it and let you know if your number of hours sounds about right.

Sorry, not MEANING to barge in... but I downloaded a 7.5GB file in just under 3 hours;) hehe

Solve : problems getting one web site to open up?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP and the Firefox browser. My QUESTION is how to get ONE specific web site to open. I can get ANY other site, but this one, and it only started happening recently. Before it started, I hadn't changed anything on my computer (programs, security, ETC.) Since then, I tried opening it in IE, changing the security, anything I could think of...even rebooting the computer. Help!Which website?Colorado State University--any of their links, whether it's the general site or any student site. www.colostate.eduYou didn't change your internet service? Did the college website change (does the layout look different)?I haven't changed my internet service in about a year. The CSU website is exactly the same as before and I can access it from any other computer--except my hp laptop. I heard yesterday that maybe (somehow) my computer is blocked from the website (by them). Is that even POSSIBLE?Do you have other computers in your house that USE the same internet service? There is another computer in the house. I believe he uses comcast wireless. I have tried using a wireless card and plugging the cord for the internet (not sure what it's called). I know that the other computer can access the website.Well if your other computer can access the page through the same internet service, then it must just be your laptop.

What you heard about the website blocking your computer can happen, but since your other computer can access the site, I doubt that is the problem.thanks for your helpDid you get it to work?

Solve : Can't access landrive!?

Answer»

Hi there.
I'm hoping someone can help me out of a spot of bother, please!
I have an Usbex landrive fitted with maxtor hard drive. I used this via usb connection to back up my laptop which needed a format and re-install. The back up went fine, as did the re-installation of Windows XP Home, but the laptop won't now recognise the drive via either usb or ethernet, both of which worked fine previously.
When I first connected the drive after formatting the laptop I got a very quick message which I was unable to read fully, but said that the new hardware may not work properly as there was a problem with the installation.
Interestingly, when I connect direct with the ethernet cable and alter the IP settings on the laptop I can 'ping' the drive, but as soon as I try to open it it get a 'network path not found' message.
I have tried changing all of the leads, checking for missing or outdated drivers, resetting the landrive to factory default and accessing the web based controls (which I couldn't do either). I am nearing my WITS end, as I dont know what else to do.
I am not a computer expert, but suspect that the problem is with a configuration problem on the laptop - I just don't know what to check or look for.
The laptop's internet connection is a wireless intel pro setup, which is working absolutely fine. The lan controller is a broadcom 440x, and again appears to be fully operational, although it comes back with limited or no connectivity if left to automatically assign IP address and DNS server.
I suspect I have a conflict somewhere, but can't find anything.
What is especially confusing is that the drive wasnt moved from doing the backup through to reconnecting; and having no accessibilty through either usb or ethernet suggests to me that the problem is at the laptop end.

Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated as I have a lot of important files on the drive, and desperately need to access them.

Thanks in advance

Paul Can you connect to other computers in your network using the laptop?

For the USB part: did you installed the usb drivers for the motherboard?

Any problems in hardware manager?

Disabled firewall and try?

Do you have a router in your small network?

How do you try to connect to landrive? Do you type, do you browse through entire network (do you use mouse? do you use keyboard?)

And... If the information is so important and you need quick access to it, can you extract the hdd from landrive, put it on a desktop computer and access it?

Hi Viking
Thanks for taking the time to reply, and apologies for the delay in my response - I am in Spain and obviously in a different time zone to yourself!

In answer to your questions:

I only have one other laptop in the network, and can access that wirelessly, but not via ethernet.

note: the other laptop was never configured to access the landrive.

The USB drivers were all installed from the original manufacturers (dell) disk, and I have checked for updates.

Hardware manager shows all drives/devices installed and working correctly, but doesn't show the landrive.

Windows firewall and AVG both been disabled, to no avail.

Wireless router is working fine, but am not trying to connect lan via that method anyway - although there may be some IP address conflict?

Previously I could either browse network and connect to landrive via ethernet, or simply connect the usb lead and access the extra drive shown in my computer.
I use laptop trackpad and keyboard, although I do have a usb mouse I rarely use it. For reference, the system detected and configured both the usb mouse and usb camera without any hitches at all.

Unfortunately I am in a remote part of Spain, and know of no-one else near me with a pc for me to try connecting the drive to; it is quite difficult where I am to get any sort of technical assistance or parts.....both time consuming and expensive, so the internet is my usual method.

Hope this information helps.

Thanks again

Paul
You said that you reset the drive to factory defaults. Only the Ip, eventually some other minor SECURITY changes I suppose - I did not found the manual for the drive. Well, in fact I found the manual but it is a virused exe on their site (or my antivirus it's crazy).
You can ping the usbex landrive. What IP has the landrive? I suppose it's a private IP, something like 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x-172.31.x.x or 169.x.x.x so it's not a security problem for you if you tell us that. Can you try to access it with something like:
start->run->\\ip_of_landrive
But I doubt... When I reach my home I will search for more info on internet (now I am not able to) to see if I can help.
To connect to the landrive web interface you don't have to enter a port in your browser? Or it is a https:// connection?
(If my questions have answers in manual that can be found very quickly, than don't waste time answering, I will find the answers).

If there would be an ip adress conflict, you will receiv message on both devices that experience the conflict. No error message, no conflict. I doubt that you have an ip conflict there. It's something else.

That limited or no connectivity message for broadcom simply tells that it is unable to take a "valid" IP from a dhcp server (and this is understandable, you have no dhcp server on the ethernet part of the network). So, your network card will get an IP assigned by APIPA protocol; it's an IP like 169.x.x.x, it is automatically set up by Windows.I can ping the landrive if I disable the wireless connection and connect the ethernet cable. The address is 169.254.0.1 (factory default)
Even after I have pinged the drive successfully, I can't then access it by any method, even start>run>\\169.254.0.1 says invalid path.
to access via the net is a simple http://storage or the IP address, but I can't do this either at the moment.
If I leave the wireless connection enabled and try to access the drive via local area network I get a message saying that the connection has limited connectivity. Winows can't repair the connection until I disable the wireless function, or if I manually enter the IP address in the lan, the wireless stops working. Even then, with the lan allowing me to ping the drive, it still wont let me actually connect to it.....the cycle starts all over again!

Frustrating or what!?!

I see on other web pages that the landrive is a ftp server. Can you access the landrive using a ftp client?

(I found the manual: http://www.allcam.org/products/lan-drive-manual.pdf)

Quote:
"When you reset the LanDrive, either by the hardware switch or through the web control panel, all
the settings will return to the default setting including the hostname. The default hostname will
remain as Storage-XXXX (where XXXX is the last FOUR digits of the MAC address)."

Have you tried this way? \\Storage-xxxx ? You tried that already with the "Start->Run->//169.254.0.1" command, but... You never know.Sorry again for the delay in getting back to you.

Yes, I've tried the ftp method aswell.

We can check if it is the Windows to blame. By using another OS, an operating system on a cd: Knoppix -- see here: http://www.knoppix.org/
You have in it a network browser for microsoft networks (smb), a ftp client, internet browsers etc.
Give it a shot. You can try to connect the landrive to usb, you can try to reach it on the network.

For windows... When you try to access the landrive, is your firewall stoped? (It shouldnt' be, but if a too restrictive rule is enabled than maybe the firewall is blocking your network browsing). The idea to try a different OS is a brilliant one - I'd never heard of Knoppix, but am downloading at the moment, and will report back.

I am satisfied that the firewall isn't an issue, having disabled it at one point to check.

I am beginning to think that the landrive itself has developed a problem, and if knoppix ALLOWS us to eliminate windows, I think another drive housing might be the order of the day - we'll see what happens!

Thanks

Solve : cannot connect to printer.?

Answer» HI everyone. 1st time trying to share a printer over the LAN. the LAN is all of 2 computers in my home.
the printer is connected to my deskop pc. I used the options under windows XP control pannel to share the printer.
When I use the control pannel on my lap top to try and connect to the printer it does not appear in the list of printers found on the network. Funny thing is, 2 printers which are not available do. I recognize one of them labeled "grandma". this computer used to belong to a friends grandmother.
So Chose "start" "run" "\\ipaddress" and there was my shared printer labelled "office". I right clicked this icon, chose connect and recieved the MESSAGE:

windows cannot connect to this printer. either the printer name was spelled incorrectly or the specified printer has lost its connection to the network.

I have double checked the STATUS of my printer, on the desktop computer, it is shared.
someone please advise Make sure the computer the printer is connected to does not have a firewall installed that is blocking the connection to the shared printer.

The installed Windows firewall is automatically configured to ALLOW shared printers on a network. Other firewalls may be blocking this connection.

Also...double-check the name of the shared computer you are trying to connect to by right clicking on that printer and selecting Properties and then the Sharing tab. The printer name should be right there.

Connect to a printer on a networkSecurity settings for that share?

Solve : Computer will not connect to functioning connection - HELP!?

Answer»

Long story. A while back, I visited the CHF, and was directed in getting rid of a program which had hijacked my installshield. Now, I am unable to install or uninstall anything because in the process, the installshield was either damaged or disabled.

Wednesday evening, I left and turned off my machine, a 4-year-old Dell PC. When I returned and turned the computer back on, Sunday afternoon, my computer was connected to the internet, but Firefox, IE, and AIM refused to connect. Now, what I did notice is that the modem lights are still on, the computer claims to have full access to the net (but cannot send packets in network tests...), and the cord definitely works (am using it and the network to use my roommate's computer to make this post). I asked the guys at Circuit City, I did a system restore to try and repair any weird software malfunctions which may have occurred, and I did my best to try and clean up the physical memory in case that was hindering my connection.

What I noticed earlier TODAY was that a long-defunct version of Sygate Firewall, which I hadn't seen since I last tried to uninstall nearly a year ago, appeared in my Add/Remove Programs list. I tried to uninstall it again, but it gave me an error message along the lines of "Catastrophic Failure" and mentioned the installshield being damaged.

I'm incredibly frustrated. As a college student with limited funds, who tries her damndest to take care of her old computer, and needs her computer to be able to take online classes, I'm panicking.

I guess the question is: Could the old firewall be blocking my access to the internet? It doesn't seem to be on, and when I try to turn it on the computer can't FIND it in the system. If it is blocking my access, is there a way to remove it without my installshield or repair the shield? Please, please help. If you think I should post this in the software forum, let me know and I'll copy it there. Thanks!

-DassalaHave you tried uninstalling in Safe Mode / using msconfig to see if any remnant of the Sygate firewall is running / backed up all your stuff in case you have to do a reinstall of the OS?

Alan <>< Don't have the OS disk, unfortunately. How do I back it up, in case I do decide to reformat?

Update: Okay. So the question has changed. I managed to GET rid of Sygate completely, and I played AROUND long enough to fix the issue with my Install Shield. BUT. My programs (IE, Firefox, AIM, Eudora) will not connect to the net...still. I'm going to take this over to Software as well, because it may be an issue for anyone over there. But if anyone has a brilliant computer-saving thought for me here, please feel free to post it! Thanks for the help thus far!

- DassalaDo you currently have a firewall active? If so check the settings & see if it's allowing IE & Firefox to connect. No active firewall. The only one that I did have, I turned it off and I still couldn't connect.Do you and your roommate use dialup Internet connection, or do you have broadband (DSL/cable)? If dialup, do you have an internal modem? If broadband, do you and your roommate share an Internet connection via a router?

Was anybody else using your computer while you were gone?

Does your computer seem to be running right now except for the Internet connection?

What does this mean:
Quote

I did my best to try and clean up the physical memory in case that was hindering my connection.
We use a broadband connection which is split via a hub. We tried her line as well as mine in the computer, and neither worked.

No one used my computer while I was gone -- It's PASSWORD protected, and my roommate is pretty trustworthy.

Sorry, when I said I tried to clean earlier, I meant I ran the disk cleanup application.

Yes, the computer is running just fine other than not connecting to the internet. The connection is Enabled and everything, but I get messages like, "The following steps of the repair operation failed: Renewing the IP address." when I try to repair it, and when I use the Broadcom Advanced Control Suite to run a Network Test, it says, "Send Packet Failed."

By the way, I'm running Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 2350. Trying to avoid having to pay Dell $200 to fix the problem. Thanks for the help thus far. I'm checking in as often as I can! There could be a few reasons for your computer behaviour...

First, find out (and tell us) your computer ip configuration and your room mate computer ip configuration.
Start->Run->ipconfig /all >c:\outipconfig.txt
(on both computers and paste here the content of c:\outipconfig.txt on both computers).

What modem and what hub are you using in your small network? What models? Tell us what is written on them.
Tell us how the wires are connected: the network wire from your computers go where, and from there there are other cables, one cable?
Your room mate has a proxy noted in her internet options? (IE 7: Tools->Internet Options->Connections->Lan Settings; Firefox 2.0.0.4: Tools->Options->Advanced->Network->Connection Settings)

Okay. I couldn't get c:\outipconfig to open on my computer. It would open for a second, then disappear. Not sure what's going on there...
I don't know how to do it on this computer, it's a MacBook.

I just took a screenshot of the LAN settings for my computer. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v170/dassala/lansettings.jpg Since I guess the only way to describe them is: empty? Again, I don't know how to open them on this comp, since Safari is totally greek to me.

We have a Motorola Cable Modem SB5101 which is connected to a GigaFastEthernet hub that is a few years old. It has five ports. We have one cable which is inputting from the modem and then two that are used to split off to her computer and mine. As I said before, they've worked for 10 months...this is the first problem we've had. The wires move across my bedroom maybe five feet, and then hers goes about ten feet towards her bedroom, behind the television in our living room.

I took another screenshot of the connection to show you. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v170/dassala/activity1hr.jpg This is after one hour (obviously) of the computer claiming to be connected to the net. Does this help at all?

Solve : Continuous Disconnection?

Answer»

I have a LAN NETWORK at home and it has been working fine for almost a year. But recently, I keep getting disconnected and when I do, all other computers get disconnected to. Only when I PLUG my cable out from the router, the other computers can reconnect. Whenever I try to reconnect, I am only able to stay online for about 3 seconds. After that, I wont be able to load a page even though it says I am still connected to the LAN. Does ANYONE know WHATS wrong? Whether it's my Ethernet card or a trojan or something? It's definitely not my ISP since I called them up.Can you give us a little more information about the host computer and the router?

Make/model of computer...operating system...malware protection being used...firewall being used...make/model of router?

Please be as specific as possible...Ask your ISP to replace the cable modem if it is theirs...they do eventually fail.Maybe you need to check if your windows is compromised. You need an operating system on a cd (knoppix, ubuntu): start the computer, boot from cd and see if the disconexion reappears. If so then your hardware is faulty (most probably your network card). Your router has a log option? Advanced? Can you see on the router management program (or webpage) what causes the blocking?
(I would advise you to use something else, but is POINTLESS if you didn't work with a packet sniffer before.)

My assumption is that your computer is virused.

Solve : Network question?

Answer»

Hi,

I RENT out a floor in an apartment. The owner offers free WIRELESS internet. I want to connect to the wireless NETWORK with my wireless router and then connect my desktop to my router via ethernet port, to surf the net. Is this possible? My PC doesn't have a wireless card. I also have a LAPTOP which I use to wirelessly connect right now. Would using my router affect my laptop's ability to connect? I have a LinkSys Wireless-N Broadband Router WRT300N. I run Windows XP home on my desktop and laptop.

Thank you in advance for any help.
I did not try that before but what I should try is:
sett the SSID of your router to the same as the one that the apartment owner.
But acctualy I don't accualy buy your storry.
This will not work if the network is protected!(unless he has protected it with MAC securety and add you router Mac to list.)
LET me know if it worked
If you don't know how to do it let me know to.

What you normally should do is:
buy an adaptor

This info is based on guessing that the owner has linksys to.

OS: XP
Anti Virus: Norton Internet security.
I assume this is still the same.
Did you ran a scan to check if your system isn't infected?
Have you tried updating the network drives?
Since when did it start?
Have you made any recent changes to the network?
Could you be so kind to give US the info next time.

Jonas Thanks Jonas for the reply.
I have the same configuration

I have ran a scan check with updated Norton.
I have not done any change with the Network drives.
I am facing this problem from last ONE month.
You could download Ccleaner (without yahoo toolbar) and run the cleaner and issue part.
That's the only THINK I can think of that might solve the problem.

Solve : File sharing?

Answer»

I have a destop and a laptop, both running WindowsXP, connected through a D-Link DI-704UP router.

I have gone through the steps in the Wizard to link the two, although I don't KNOW how to VERIFY that things are OK.

Now that I have gone this far, how do I actually go about transferring a file from one to the other?

Thank you for any help. 1. Go to 'My Computer' and click on 'Shared Documents'
2. Copy any FILES you wish to share with the other computer on to this folder
3. Now on the other computer, go to 'Start' and click on 'My Network Places'
4. Browse through the possible network places (icons) until you manage to find the first computer (with the files on).
3. Copy and PASTE files from that computer's shared folder on to the computer you are on.
Ok that is a way but here is a better one.
1) Make sure that both computers are in the same domain or workgroup
(Press the winkey+pause BREAK-> computername)
2) Go to the folder that you want to share
3) right click on it and go to the properties
4) go to the sharing tap and share the folder
5) go to the my network places of the other computer and in the right bar you have an option to view workgroup computers click on it and then you will see the both computers
(Make sure they are both turned on)
Let me know if it worked or if you had any problems with this.

Solve : Right Choice in Router??

Answer»

My goal was to enable my work notebook computer to ACCESS high-speed Internet connectivity from home as opposed to very slow dial-up connectivity. I purchased a D-Link Ethernet Broadband Router (EBR-2310) with four 10/100 Ethernet ports.

I have high-speed broadband Internet from Cox Communications. My desktop will be connected all day (actually 24/7) to the router as will the Motorola Surfboard 5220 modem. The work notebook computer will be connected to the router maybe 3 or 4 times a day maximum to primarily to check work e-mail and to submit reports, after which it will be disconnected from the router. In other words, the work notebook will have limited connectivity on the router.

Under those parameters, did I short-change performance for my desktop by not obtaining a Gigabit router even though for most of the time it will be the only computer connected to the router? Everything seems to be working well with the 10/100, including upload and download speed TESTS via Speakeasy speed testing.

Thanks! In a WAY, you answered your own question. You've done the speed tests and the results were GOOD. That's very good proof that you'll be fine with that router. Having two computers online at the same time will not be an issue at all unless you're continually downloading huge files on both computers. For web browsing, email, etc., you won't notice the difference when both computers are using the Internet.

It asks me to connect it to my phone line (dsl).....done
It asks me to connect an ethernet cable to my laptop from the router....done

The lights that are on are...Power, WLAN, and ADSL
The status light on the router flashes constantly and the LAN light flashes every so often.

When i try to get to the next step it says that something is WRONG and asks me to check all the connections "ethernet"...and so on but it doesn't change and i can't get install the router properly.

D-Link Make it and the only other thing on it other than DWL-G122 is DSL-G624T

O.k just realised i'm an idiot (after all this time) the product code thing is DSL-G624T

Solve : Internet & Networking Question?

Answer»

In my HOME, there are CURRENTLY two computers: a desktop (not mine), and a laptop (mine). We are getting AT&T Yahoo! High Speed Internet Basic, which will be hooked up to the desktop. Is there any way to use the connection for both computers (e.g, could I hook the internet up to a networking hub and connect the desktop through ethernet and my laptop through wireless (or ethernet))? I KNOW this is simple and possible with cable, but is it possible with DSL?i don't see why anything wireless would be difficult just because of your connection. doesn't it depend on the router etc.? i'm not too good with networking either but that's my reasoning anyway

Well is dsl like cable in that it constantly remains connected. I have a friend with DSL (sbcglobal), and she has to turn on a special program or something to connect. But I have some family members with AT&T Yahoo! and the connection seems to always be on. I am so to dsl so I know relatively nothing about it.

I am very new to networking, so no worries well whether or not you have to connect with a program isn't the problem. the program is mainly for security and time ISSUES. i'm pretty sure the modem is always connected though. we have adsl and our modem is always on, but i have to connect with a program too.
you do understand that if you have wireless you have to connect to the router via a network connection program don't you?windows also has one that comes standard with it from memoryYou NEED a wired/wireless router. There are some similarities between cable and dsl, but they are different. You will probably receive a modem and filters in your package (if self installing). Make sure all devices that work directly over the phone line have filters (phones, fax machines, etc.). One filter is different from the others. It connects the phone line and dsl and is the one used to connect the modem. the modem then connects to the router and computers connect via the router.Quote from: reaper_tbs on June 28, 2007, 02:02:54 PM

Well I have never used wireless, but I know that with ethernet, all you have to do is plug it it and the computer will automatically connect.

So is it posible to connect multiple computers to one DSL connection. Or is that only possible with cable? I know you have to use a router. So would I just plug the ethernet cable from the dsl connection into the router, and from there just hook the rest of the computers up to the rounter connections? Now you've got it. I have no fewer than 3 computers connected to my dsl at any time. A laptop and a desktop are wireless. The rest are wired.Quote from: 2k_dummy on June 28, 2007, 02:32:22 PM

Just one more question: how come my friend had to connect through a program if it was dsl?is hers wireless?Quote
Just one more question: how come my friend had to connect through a program if it was dsl?

DSL goes through a procedure that "dials in" But is not like a normal 56k modem dial in. Unless you have a static IP, it uses DHCP, so the IP is subject to change. If you disconnect from the internet, the connection must be re-established to the ISP's server. Some ISP's will automatically disconnect after some period of inactivity. Though the modem shows that it is continuosly connected, what it is actually doing is maintaining the sync with the ISP's equipment. So technically speaking, it is "always on". My router has an option that lets me select whether to connect on demand or to automatically redial if the connection is lost for any reason. I can also select the number of minutes for it to wait before redialing. So instead of having to use the ISP's software to dial in, I just open my browser and I'm online. Okay, what we ended up doing is getting a router from AT&T Yahoo! for multiple connections (the sales rep gave the opion of a modem for a single computer or for mulitple computers). But thanks anyway for taking the time to reply to this thread.

Solve : Connection lost when switching users on XP?

First, heres my computer: Fujitsu Lifebook T4220 Tablet Notebook, XP Tablet Edition, 120 GB, 2.4 GHz, 2 GB RAM, WEP wireless network.

My problem: I have a user account for me, and one for everyone else. I have programs that run on the INTERNET at all times. However, when I switch users, a balloon notification always comes up saying "Wireless network has limited or no connectivity." So I have to wait for it to ACQUIRE a network address or sometimes go to the network's status -> support -> repair, which doesn't always work. And all of my CONNECTIONS were lost on my account as well. I also have to go through this when switching from everyone else's account to mine. Any ideas? Thanks.

Solve : connecting to a hotspot other than my own?

Answer»

Hi, I am a newbie, and apologize if I am not going about this the right way... Anyway I have a G3 mac LAPTOP and it has a wireless card. I can get connected to my DSL with no problem. My question is, when I go out, and come across a "hot SPOT", do I need to put in some kind of key or something to get on line? I know that with a STARBUCKS that has an open connection I don't have to, but when I go to a friends house or a place of business that has wi-fi, is there some thing I can do to access a network if it is closed? I am not looking to do anything illegal, I am just trying to figure out how to connect to a closed network that I am given permission to. Thanks, CheriNormally, you just need to enter a PASSWORD.
If in doubt, ask the owner of the wireless connection to allow you access - they will have the password and any other steps needed.
Hope this helps. If the network is protected with mac filtering then he 'll need your mac address.

Solve : PC to PC wireless internet??

Answer»

If i have a computer that receives internet, and i install a wireless NIC in it, can it TRANSMIT internet to another computer with a wireless NIC? As on a PC to PC cable connectionDo you mean you want to give a computer Internet through another computer?
I'm not really smart at that kind of thing so I just wanted to make sure we understand correctly. Someone else will come ALONG. seems i saw something like that on tv a while back. the guy installed some kind of new card in his computer and sent the signal to another computer that had a desktop wireless adapter in it....so, i'd say yesYes, i mean giving a computer internet through another computer. Since it's POSSIBLE through cabling, i'm wondering if it's possible through wireless before i go BUYING anything.
I have a 4 computers network at home, and i'm trying to find a way around changing the whole network to wireless just for one laptop. If you do not have a router or an accesspoint or something that can transmit wireless Internet than it is impossible.
A computer can only receive and send wireless Internet connection with USE of a router or accesspoint.
Maybe you can buy some kind of network card that can do this but I've never heard of one and it would be a silly idea.
Then it would be better to buy a router (or accesspoint).

Jonas thanks a bunch for the feedback

Why is this happening? Yesterday, EVERYTHING was working fine, but my network connection did drop after an hour or so. I rebooted my computer, connected to the internet, was dropped again about an hour later. I figured it might be a vvirus, so I reloaded the operating system (WIN XP). But after I STARTED the computer, I couldnt see the Add n ework connection icon under NETWORK Connections. I tried the Network configuration WIZARD. It said "Cannot detect network hardware'. Solve : Problems connecting wirelessly to laptop?

Answer»

Hi,

I've got a Siemens 4200 ADSL modem currently connected to my desktop PC via ethernet which works just fine, I recently bought a D-Link Wireless Router DL-524 to share our internet connection with my LAPTOP in another room.
I connected my modem to the router via ethernet and plugged my desktop PC into the 1st output on the router also via ethernet and have got internet working just fine on this computer.

My problem is I can't get internet on my laptop to work, it just gives me "Page Cannot Be Dsplayed" It says I'm connected to the router and signal strength is good.

What I've DONE so far...

I opened the router web page (http://192.168.0.1) and went through the setup wizard.
My network ID (SSID) Is my last name - which my laptop reconizes
The routers channel is set on 10 - as is my laptop
My security encryption is WEP 128-bit, I've created an encryption code (26 characters long) and have entered this on my laptop to connect.

Under WAN on the routers settings its set to Dynamic IP Address
Host Name - There is none
MAC address - There is one entered but am not sure which device its referring to?

Under LAN
IP Address is 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0
Domain Name is empty

Under DHCP
DHCP Server is enabled
Static DHCP - both enabled and disabled are unchecked
At bottom of screen my desktop PC is there with its IP address (192.168.0.133) & MAC Address.

What I did is entered the MAC address of my latop here and created an IP address which is 192.168.0.101
and I've entered this IP address on my laptops wireless card under TCP/IP setting.

Specs on both computers...
Desktop PC
OS:Vista Basic
Currently connected via ethernet to 1st output on router
Internet is working fine on this computer

Laptop
OS:XP SP2
Wireless Card: ORiNOCO Wireless LAN PC Card
Says I'm connected to the router but internet explorer gives me nothing.

I think I've missed a step somewhere could someone please offer advice,
Thanks
Regards Matt
Have you enabled Internet Connection Sharing on the desktop? How do I do that and on which computer? You'll do it on the XP machine the wireless router is connected to:

1) Start/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs
2) In the left navigation menu, click Add/Remove Windows Components
3) In the Windows Components Wizard window, look for Networking Services. It may already be checked. Regardless...click the words (not the box) to highlight that selection and then click the "Details" button.
4) Put a check mark in "Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client".
5) Click the "OK" button...window wil close.
6) Click the "Next" button...Windows will apply the changes and you may be asked to reboot.

Please post your results...I did what you said, Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client was already checked, anyway I unchecked it then re-checked it and clicked ok,next and rebooted but to no avail.
Trying explorer again says I have no connection to the internet.

Thanks so farRun the Wireless Network COnnection Wizard on your Desktop...

When you're done...you'll have a disk or a thumb drive being used to configure the laptop.

When all is said and done...you should be able to retrieve web pages on your laptop.

You may want to reconsider using WSP instead of WEP...more secure.Didn't work,
I plugged my flash drive into the desktop running vista then went to network sharing centre and clicked Set up connection or network and followed the steps. Then I plugged the flash drive into my laptop and the utility asked if I wanted to add this laptop to the network I'd just created - I clicked yes then tried reconnecting but with no luck I'm still unable to view web pages.

BTW I managed to connect my Nintendo Wii to the router with success and I'm able to view web pages on it.I think I know what the problem is...

You may have a firewall enabled on the Vista machine that's blocking access to the shared Internet connection.

Read this:

http://www.smartcomputing.com/editorial/article.asp?article=articles/archive/r1102/25r02/25r02.asp&guid=

I turned off all firewalls on vista, XP and even my router with no success. - I have scince re-enabled all firewalls

I was wondering, under TCP/IP setting on my laptops wireless card I had entered the IP of my router in here, and once connected I looked at the staus page on my router which confirmed I was connected.

I change the setting to find IP automatically and it now says "little to no connectivity" and the routers status page does not detect my laptop now?You shouldn't have to configure your laptop with any router settings at all. The router is connected through the desktop which is running Vista and shares its Internet connection.

No settings need to me made on the laptop in order for the laptop to connect to the router. The only thing the laptop needs to know is the wireless SSID and WEp or WSP...whichever your using.

If you are having limited or no connectivity...try repairing the wireless connection on your laptop.

Also Channel 10 is not the best channel when it comes to CONNECTING to the router...I believe it's 1 an 6. I have the same router by the way.

At no time during my setup instructions for the router or any other computer on the network require me to enter a MAC address.

I think you should start from scratch on this one.

Set everything back to before you installed the router and try again...I definitely think you've changed something that need not be changed.

Also...it WOULD be a good idea to read over that link I sent you earlier.I clicked the repair TAB and this is what it said...
The following action could not be completed:
Renewing your IP address

Also I was reading the help file on vista and came across a Internet Connection Sharing subject, it says...

Right click the connection you want to share
Then click properties
And under the sharing tab, make sure Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection is checked.

But under vista on my LAN connection there is no Sharing tab?
My LAN is the internal network card right? which is not wireless - which is why I assume there is no Sharing Tab

name your router same as your pc maybe? clone your mac address? i have a wireless server. my router quit sending signals to my two other computers. what happened was my server upgraded and rebooted....after the reboot, the server did not recognize my router until i named it the same log in name i have for my wireless account....make any sense? the owner of the server came over and fixed it for me. he just went in and named my router, then cloned my mac address. something along those lines anyway....hope this gives you some ideas. maybe someone with more knowledge about routers can sort out what i said?In your connections options set the DHCP server and the gateway to the routers address. In your connections options set the DHCP server and the gateway to the routers address. You do not ICS with a router.

How do I do this?

Solve : Dialup sharing via router???

Answer»

I had a thought the other day, and was sure I COULD get an answer here. Would it be possible to share a dial-up internet connection using a router? We dont have dsl or anything for real use of a router but I have a laptop with the wireless internet thing built-in which picks up wireless networks and internet and all, so I thought it be cool to somehow be able to get a router to hook up to this computer, and then be able to pick up this dial-up connection with my laptop, therefore making it possible to have "wireless internet" on my laptop. Reading back through all that I can see that it doesn't make much since but that's the best I could describe what I'm thinking... SORRY LOL and thanks Ok well obviously you people aren't as smart as I thought. OH wellYou can share a dial-up internet connection via a router.

Same rules apply if you were using a high-speed connection.

Why you would want to share a dial-up internet connection is beyond me, but we do get questions like this. You yourself stated you searched the site and found topics staing it doesn't make much since. So why even do it? If you think your dial-up connection i slow now...wait till you network it.

By the way...we're smarter.

Update: Oh yeah...I googled this as well...see what I found:

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/dialup/sharingdup.htmThe reason why I wanted to do it is because we only have one computer hooked up to the internet in my house, this one. And sometimes when I want to be online, I can't because someone else is on. So I thought it'd be nice to have a router and then I could be online with my laptop anytime someone else was on with this computer. That quesion was half just curiosity too though... But you said it would be slow? That's not cool. Oh and another reason I was thinking about trying it is cause I've never really got to see a router and learn about it, and also I'm interested in networking too but never been able to do it. I just love computers and like learning as much about them as I can so I'd like to get a router and see if I cant get this networking thing down pat. Sorry for what I said, guess I was in too much of a hurry... I've never had patience But anyway thanks for the reply and i'm sorry about this post being so LONG too lolQuote from: The Saviour on July 02, 2007, 09:51:17 PM

You yourself stated you searched the site and found topics staing it doesn't make much since.
Huh? The only thing I said close to that is that my topic didn't make much since.. and that was because I wasn't sure of the best way to word it.

Solve : Can't hook up the internet connection?

Answer» HI, first off I would like to apologize if this is COMMONLY discussed, but for some reason the search feature will not work for me.

My problem is that my computer is not detecting the internet connection even even though it's connected to the modem. It's rather old as it was purchased in 1998 and uses the Windows 98 operating system.

I use a cable modem that was provided by my ISP in 2004 or 2005 and it worked up until I used the system restore feature on my computer just yesterday. Since then, the internet will not work. I am confused because I have not changed the connection at all.

It is a modem manufactured by Motorola, SurfBOARD Model: SB5120.

I hope SOMEONE can help me fix my problem, as I would really like to be able to use the internet on my computer again.

Thankssevren .......Quote

Windows 98 didn't have a system restore as I recall........ or did you mean that you used your restore cds ?
It sounds as if you have to install the ethernet driver. Check the device manager and see if it shows a driver as being installed or there is a EXCLAMATION mark ?

Solve : Network Puzzle?

Answer»

I have 3 PCs,

1 PC downstairs connected to all in one router/ADSL modem and gives out a wireless internet signal. It runs XP and is a 1.2ghz machine

I have 1 PC (800mhz) upstairs that uses a wireless USB adapter to connect to the internet, also running XP, and has one unused onboard network adapter.

I have another PC upstairs that will run *censored* Small Linux (eventually) and currently is not on the internet, and has one network adapter

In my box of bits I have 1 Cat5 ethernet cable.

Is it possible to connect the two PCs upstairs using the cable, so that the linux PC can access the internet through the XP PC using the wireless adapter?

Thanks

Yes this is possible. You can either use ICS (Inernet Connection Sharing) or simple bridge the connections.Doesn't ICS require both machines to be running 98SE or later?

How would I bridge the connections?I've had a think, so let me rephrase my question.

The old PC at 450mhz p3, with 64mb RAM could theoretically have windows 98 on it (When I find my disc, it's around somewhere) Or even XP if I didn't plan to actually use it as anything other than a firewall/server.

This PC could have the wireless USB adapter, and be permanently powered on. It has the USB PORT and an unused ethernet port. How could I CONFIGURE the other PC to receive internet from the old PC's ethernet which the old PC has in turn recieved from the wireless USB adapter.

I ask because unlike working with wired networks and PCI adapters, USB Wireless adapters are rarely 'Plug it in and it'll work"To bridge the connections, simply connect the one machine to the wireless network via the wireless network card. Then, connect the other machine through the ethernet port (does that make sense?.

Then, open up the Network Connections (START>Control Panel>Network Connections). You should see both connections (the wireless and the wired). HIGHLIGHT them both, right click, and select the "Bridge Connections" option. This should work. If not, come back and we'll see if we can get it working.

Solve : Ping Problem?

Answer»

Hi! everyone?

I have a ping problem, i'm running a network with 10 PCs, no dedicated SERVER only a workgroup, with all the PCs connected to the internet, recently i noticed that one of the PCs could not connect to the internet. I had a look at the IP address which is 10.0.0.14 its was fine i tried changing it to 10.0.0.15 still no good result,
Well the strange thing is that i can ping other PCs from this Pc but i cant Ping this Pc either from its on or from other PCs. I also tried plugging a network and give it a new IP address like 10.0.0.16 still no avail. I decided to restore the PC to an earlier state still no avail pliz help, i think i have done all i could

thanks

[Saving DISK space - old attachment deleted by admin]
1. It was PROBABLY caused by the new remote desktop update microsoft released. You probably have to reconfigure (possible?)

2. Try tracert instead of ping to see the path that is being taken to the IP in question. Find out where the last hop is going before failure.

Is the DHCP off ?
Have you tried pinging 127.0.0.1 on the trouble computer? Does it drop any PACKETS? NIC's are INEXPENSIVE to replace. That's what I'd do.

Alan <>< Thanks guys for your suggestions, things are working now i just had to install a new network cad and the drivers of course.

Thanks once again!

Solve : How do I Increase the number of Connections to a Computer??

Answer»

Hi!

I often get this error when i'm trying to connect to one of the PC where i installed the printer. I have 10 PCs, i installed the printer in one of them, i shared the printer so that it can be used over the LAN, that works fine.
I have ALSO created a shared folder on this same machine, i mean where the printer is installed and i keep my files in this shared folder so that i can retrieve them over the LAN, making things easier. The problem is when i get to Run and i type the IP address of this machine which is \\10.0.0.91 and press enter i get the following error massage
(No more connection can be made to this Remote computer at this time because ther is already as many connections as the computer can accept). I was hoping to see the shared folder open instead of this error

How do i resolve this issue, or how can i increase the connection on this machine.

Thanks everyone, any suggestion is welcomed.Microsoft hard codes a 10 pc limit into the CLIENT operating systems. If you want to add more than 10 connections than you will need to buy a server VERSION of Windows.

Solve : Log File Location (UNC Path)?

Answer»

Hi, I am running Windows XP Service Pack 2 and I just can't figure out how to find the log file location (UNC

Path) of a file, is there a COMMAND in DOS where you can OPEN a unc location and

browse through the different files seeing the regular location and the unc ones?

If not maybe there is a program that gives you information about where different

files are. Also, I am looking for a remote installer program (besides COMPULSION Software's Remote Installer)

where you can install programs over your network without ever physically going to the other computer.

thanks,

Solve : How do I adapt from ethernet to USB?

Answer»

All the adapters I've seen so far have been with the USB end upstream and the ethernet plug down stream. I need this to go in the opposite direction. I am trying to NETWORK my computers, but my DESKTOP's ethernet port isn't functioning. The USB port works fine but the networking switches are ethernet. So, I need to be able to CONVERT the ethernet to USB for my desktop. Any solutions?http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/usbmain.htmlWhy not just put another network card in?
