Solve : Very Odd Internet Problem?

Answer»

So, I recently got back from vacation, and was informed by my parents that during a THUNDERSTORM our modem had been 'fried' and that we couldn't access the internet. Being sure that they probably didn't know what they were talking about being computer idiots, I decided to take a LOOK. I also got a modem of the same type that my friend had. (at this time we were using embarq dsl) With the original modem i noticed something very odd. I could share files with ares, but not use in the browser. The torrents i was seeding in utorrent were able to access the trackers, and I was able to get windows automatic update. Yet I couldn't use any webbrowsers or get on aim. So I tried the my friends modem. Same thing. I tried using our D-link router. Same thing. I made sure MCAFEE and windows firewall was off. Still no luck. Then my dad made the desicion to switch to SUDDEN link cable after GETTING really pissed off at verizon for not giving us good support. So I moved all our computer stuff up to were the cable modem was set up, turned on the computer, and started checking things out. The same thing was happening. I installed the windows update, which i had previously been notified to install, thinking maybe this would give me access. No luck. My friend suggested maybe I had spyware using up my connection but I don't think that would be the case considerinng I could download at upwards of 300kbs, limited mostly by the number of peers and not my connection. So I tried installing the new linksys router my dad bought, and the same thing was happening. Even during the installation it said that there was no connection. Which means it has to be something with my computer and not the modem or router. I just don't have any idea what it might be. Thanks for any help.At my mums house there was a thunderstorm to it hit the neighbours house and the Internet connection and telephone where lost. they had to change EVERYTHING from cables in the street to the modem of our ISP but our router was still working!
I mean it could be the Cables of your street or something like that.
Did you call you ISP (Internet Service Provider)?
Is there anyone in your street who can still use the Internet (at your side of the street)?

Solve : Unreliable Wi-Fi connection?

Answer»

I hate networks. Let me get that out of the way. I know how useful they are, and all that; heck, I'm using one right now. This is getting a little stupid, however.

Before I moved, I used a Linksys B/G router. I had little TROUBLE with the thing, with only the occasional need to repair my connection (or reboot the router).

Now that we've moved, we got a Belkin G router (backwards compatible with B, so my mother can use it). It seems to work fine. I've got a nice 56 Mbps connection on my Linksys-G WiFi adapter. However, it's losing connection more often than I'd like. All of a sudden, I'll have "little or no connectivity" errors. Repairing fixes this problem, but this is something I'm having to do at least TWICE a day, and I'm used to doing this once every two weeks! There wasn't a hitch on the install, and I know nobody's taking bandwidth -- our network is WPA encrypted.

Not sure which specs I should post, so I'll have to ask what I should tell you. On my end, I've got a Linksys Wireless-G PCI adapter. On the other end, a Belkin... not sure of the exact model. The box is long gone.

EDIT: Make that about once PER hour or so.Check your channel settings to make sure they are the same. Many routers and cards will work cross channel if the distance and orientation are right, but movement can cause it lose signal. Also check to see if you are getting interference from CORDLESS phones, a microwave oven, etc. that could be causing a loss of connection. What's the model number on the adapter and the router? My adapter is set to automatically use the proper channel. It's a WMP54G Linksys. The router is a F5D7230-4 Belkin.Got the latest firmware?
http://www.belkin.com/support/download/downloaddetails.asp?download=1115&lang=1
Might want to also set the CHANNELS manually to be the same.Quote

My adapter is set to automatically use the proper channel.

I would assume that would hold IF it was talking to Linksys router. The Belkin may not have the feature. I, too, would set it manually.Okay, 2k, I've modified the config files to use channel 11 (the Belkin default, which I kept as I set it up), and changed the default to 11 as well. As a further measure, since I did just move, I removed and re-seated the physical adapter. I'll report back and let you know if that holds up.Seems to be working, I haven't had to Repair since I did that... I'm still holding my breath. Thanks, guys. I'm having trouble again. It seems to be a morning problem. Judging by the number of wireless networks in the area (all B, so only mom's comp can see them), I think I'm getting a sort of "rush hour" Net traffic. Not likely, but I've heard of it before. Any other ideas? I think you're on the right track about the "rush hour" thing. I set up an wireless network on a friends computer and it kept getting "bumped" by the neighbors. I changed the channel and that made it work.

Might try another channel than the standard 6 & 11 if you have other choices.

Alan <>< We think we've found the actual problem. We didn't just move anywhere; we moved to an apartment. Therefore, the walls between me and the router are exterior walls. We found out after moving the laptop from the room with the router to the living room killed the connection.

Tomorrow I'm getting some money and I'm buying a modem, fixing this once and for all.

Solve : How to check how much you Dloaded in the past month??

Answer»

Is there any way to check how much you Dloaded in the past month?
Our Dload limit in reached and we have the largest option witch you can chose at out ISP.
My DAD needs it for his work and he is a bit angry!
I want to prove that my step-brother did it.
He is always looking at youtube and sending videos true MSN.
He blames me (he doesn't know anything about computers) because I'm the most on my computer.
My dad believes me but my step-mother is blaming me. (She always does)
And I have to prove myself, again.
So could you please help me and tell me if there is any way how you can see it.
The cookies are automatically cleaned by Ccleaner (I installed it on his computer).
He has WINDOWS Vista home premium and I'm running on Win XP
Thanks in advance

Jonas

Edit: We can Dload 35Gb Each month! If you haven't got any software installed to LOG the net TRAFFIC then I think the answer is no.But I would recommend that you look into monitoring software so you can prove your innocence in the future... I did a bit of searching and I think this looks promising:
http://codebox.no-ip.net/controller?page=bitmeter2

You can even set a download quota and the program gives you a warning when you get close to it.A bit sad that you can't look at it now.
Looks like I know what the SUBJECT will be at dinner.
Alright I'll Dload and install it on both PCs so next time I have some proof.
Thanks for the help!

Solve : Internet down when I installed video card?

Answer»

So my internet was working on my windows xp DESKTOP before my cousin installed a e-Ge-Force Nvidia FX 5200 video card. It happened to his too so it can't be that we messed with something in the computer. I have a linksys wireless-G PCI adapter with speedbooster. It worked perfectly before but not anymore after we installed the video card. When I try to connect to the network it can't find it. It only finds my neighbors. I use DSL.Welcome to CHF!
Is there any other computer who can still connect to the router?

Jonas Install the vid card in the PCI slot closest to the CPU...

If possible leave an empty slot between it and the PCI network card. All of the other computers work perfectly. And I don't believe I have a PCI slot its AGP or something I don't know much about that.AGP is usually only one slot.
I'd still try moving the network card further away if possible...So are you sure that is the problem? I only have that one slot Is there nothing else i can do?Wait would my video card work in a PCI slot? OR only a AGP slot? I'll try opening it up tonight and seeing if i can move the network card over.Quote from: patio on JULY 14, 2007, 05:07:26 PM

AGP is usually only one slot.

IT didn't work we moved it over the farthest possible. I wasted an hour on that!! AHH but can you please find out another solution or something? How far away is the router ? ?
You could try re-setting it by unplugging it for a minute or so and plugging it back in...Less than 10 feet LOL It's in my sister's room. MY cousin said his worked when he used the ethernet CABLE but my dad doesnt want to run a cable from my room across the hall into her's. I just don't understand the problem though How could installing a graphics card mess with the internet?Did you try what was suggested ? ?
Since there can be a hundred things go wrong with a wireless connection try what is suggested before moving on to new questions...Yea I tried it. IT still doesn't work I also uninstalled the video card DRIVERS but nothing changed.IT WORKED!!! yay it wrked im soo happy I don't know why but suddenly it appreared when the linksys monitor scanned for networks it fround my network

Solve : VPN fun?

Answer»

Hey guys, I just had a bit of a question regarding VPN. I have a friend who has about 1.5 terabytes HDD space, and we want to set up some form of VPN so a group of us can connect to his pc, and store a few files on there whilst we need to use them, but we also want access to them. So we want to set up some form of VPN. The OS's running that would need to be connected are Vista Home Premium and Multiple XP HE's. The main PC is XP HE also. Would ANYONE be able to give me a GOOD link to a page that covers VPN, port FORWARDING, and any other aspect I might need to know. I have tried a few, but none seemed to work. Do I need a static IP address on the server also? THANKS.

Solve : Wireless stops working when I switch to battery?

Answer»

OK. I was just suspecting the battery as they do lose effectiveness over the years.

Is there any documentation for the Cisco wireless card in this issue or have you TRAVELED to their site ? ?

The other place to look into since you have checked all the Windows based power options would be the power saving modes built into the laptop itself. These are normally under a seperate listing in Control Panel and would be run by the Thinkpad software itself and or in the BIOS
Check your laptop documentation as well...Thanks to everyone for your help.

Since my computer's from my university, I called up their tech support yesterday on the off chance that I was still covered (I GRADUATED in May, so I assumed my tech support coverage had run out). Turns out yesterday was the last day of coverage, what luck!

Anyway, the problem is apparently one that MANY ThinkPad R40s and T40s have, and it has to do with a driver needed for Think Vantage Access Connections, the default LAN management program. I uninstalled that program about a year ago, because it was giving me serious trouble and making my computer run extremely slow.

Basically, there is no way to fix the problem unless I reinstall Think Vantage Access Connections with the new driver, which I'm not too keen on. IBM doesn't support any kind of fix if you're using windows to configure your wireless connection. On the upshot, the guy said that the IBM program is now much better and doesn't slow down your computer as much, so I'm at least going to give it a shot.

Thanks again everybody--at least if this same thing comes up again, you'll all look LIKE geniuses for knowing the answer

Solve : Suspicious file sharing outgoing packets?

Answer»

Hi,
I have XP Pro SP2 with ZA Pro and Avira. Recently I have noticed in my ZA Logs that multiple packets are being sent out to an static IP address on the Internet. My computer is trying to communicate to that IP using port 80, 445, 139. ZA fortunately blocks those connection attempts. However I am still worried about this suspicious behavior. I have done a complete antivirus scan and multiple spyware scans (Adaware, Spybot, AVG, ZA Pro...). I followed the connection attempts using TCPview, Packetyzer, and Regmon but I cannot find out more information about what is going on. I do have file and printer sharing off. What should I do? How can I find out what is going on?

Thanks a lot

The IP it is trying to connect to is:
77.196.149.95 on port 80, 139, and 445.

I don't think you have anything to be concerned about. The IP comes from GAOLAND.NET, which appears to be an ISP located in France. The ports are common ports used by Microsoft applications (file and print sharing, etc.). As long as ZA is blocking them, you're OK. You will see incoming on those ports fairly often. The security problem is likely on the other end, not on yours.I realize that GAOLAND.net is for my exisp in france (ne9f). But now i moved and have embarq internet dsl. And i never installed any software from ne9f. I have no file files sharing. Why are the ports activity all outgoing? thats what wrong. Is there software that can tell me why these packets are being send, who makes them be sent, and who or something like that?

Solve : Can't enabole mac filtering with use of the linksys software.?

Answer»

My mum just bought a new router it is a linksys WRT54GR.
Sinds there is no update for the firmwire I still have firmwire 1.0.
But when I try to set a mac filter is says "invaled mac adress."
Even when I click prevent these mac adresses and I don't fill in anything.
I did not do anything special I just click at enable mac filtering.
Is there some step that I forgot?
When I click help and do it the same way as help has told me that I still have that problem.
What am I doing wrong?

Jonas Why are you using MAC filtering?

What this does is after you setup the security on the router it filters out the MAC address not on the access list. To get this to work you need to know the full MAC address of your machines and than enter them into the list.

From the owners manual

Enable MAC Address filtering. MAC Address filtering will allow you to provide access to only
those WIRELESS NODES with certain MAC Addresses. This makes it harder for a hacker to access your network with a random MAC Address.

Yes I was trying to use the MAC filter to ONLY allow the MAC addresses who are listed but when I copie them the router always tell me invalid MAC addr. even when it is 00:00:00:00:00:00 It works fine at my dads place but it seems like that Firmewire isn't completly finished. is this possible?
I do know how to enable MAC filtering I did it before but it isn't working in this case?

Setting-Up Wireless MAC Filtering to Prevent Users from Connecting

Question

I want to prevent others from connecting to my wireless network without using any password, how can I do this?

Answer

Wireless access can be filtered by using the MAC addresses of the wireless devices transmitting within your network’s radius. You can either permit or prevent specific wireless computers access to your wireless network.

NOTE: Before setting up MAC filtering, make sure that the wireless devices that you want to allow are currently wirelessly connected to the router and are able to access the network.

Checking Computer’s Wireless MAC Address

NOTE: To get the PC’s MAC Address using Windows 98 or ME, click here.

Windows XP/2000

Step 1:
Click Start on your toolbar, then Run.

Step 2:
When the Run window opens, type “cmd” in the OPEN field, then click the OK.

Step 3:
When the MS DOS Prompt appears, type “ipconfig/all” then [Enter].

Step 4:
Take note that Physical Address is your computer’s MAC Address.

Windows 98/ME

Step 1:
Click Start on your toolbar, then Run. A window similar to Step 2 will appear.

Step 2:
Once the Run window appears, type “winipcfg” in the Open field, then click OK.

Step 3:
When the IP Configuration window appears, select the Network Adapter that the PC is using from the drop-down menu.

Step 4:
Take note that Adapter Address is your computer’s MAC Address.

Preventing Wireless PC from Accessing Your Network

Step 1:
Access the router’s web-based setup page. For instructions, click here.

Step 2:
When the router’s web-based setup page appears, click the Wireless tab and click Wireless MAC Filter.

NOTE: If the screen on the router’s web based setup page looks different, click here.

Step 3:
Set Wireless MAC Filter to Enable and select Prevent from the options.

NOTE:Prevent will deny wireless connectivity to the wireless computers whose MAC addresses are listed on the MAC Filter List. Whereas, Permit will allow wireless connectivity to the wireless computers whose MAC addresses appear on the MAC Filter List.

Step 4:
Click Edit MAC Filter List. This will open the MAC Address Filter List window. You may enter the MAC address of the wireless computer that you want to deny access to your wireless network.

Step 5:
Click the Wireless Client MACList and click Update Filter List to view the MAC addresses of all wireless computers connected to your wireless network.

Step 6:
Check the MAC addresses listed and check Enable MAC Filter of the MAC Address you want to prevent access to your wireless network.

Step 7:

Click .Close

Step 8:

Click save settings on Wireless MAC Filter List.

Step 9:

Click save settings on the Wireless MAC Filter page.

That's what I tried and did before but my point is: It doesn't work.
and my question is why?

Jonas Have you tried to enter the MAC address differently?

12:23:as: etc....

1223as etc....

12-23-as- etc....
No but standard they are all 00:00:00...
And if I try to change it it automatically change back to 00:00:00...

Jonas Ok I did a little home work on this one....

You have to use a machine that is not wireless to set this up.
Use the comand on the wireless machine ipconfig /all to get the MAC address
Than go back to the none wireless machine to enter the MAC address. 1a:55:qw:78: etc. is the correct format.

If you still have problems I talked to a guy from Linksys who says to reflash your frimware. You can get it here....

http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_CASupport_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1166859762494&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=6249437314B278&displaypage=download#versiondetail

This is for your router and version number 1 Be sure to check this because you can toast a router with the wrong frimware.

For more help you can try a search here.....

For more information, you can also visit our knowledge base located at http://www.linksys.com/kb. The site contains troubleshooting tips, how-to instructions, as well as solutions to common issues relating to all Linksys products.

Hope that this helps.....

Alright thanks for helping this might be the problem.
I'm not at my mums house but I 'll try it as soon as I get there.
I have the default firmwire so the 1.0 isn't an update is it?
Thanks for TAKING the time to help me I really appreciate that I also looked much but didn't find anything.
And oh the firmwire automattecly gives a list of the MACs who are connected so you just can confirm them and they pop up in the MAC allowed list. (I love that new adjustment!!)

Jonas I tried trough cable....
No luck!
I'm blaming the firmwire.
I have done this several times in our home network.
To allow my PS3 and PSP and there I had no problems.
But at my mums house it just wont work.
I'll wait for a firmwire upgrade and than change it to MAC security.
Now I'm just using WEP.
But MAC is safer.

Solve : I've found a way to share printers from XP to Vista!?

Answer»

I've found a way to connect with a computer that runs on Vista to a PRINTER who is attached to an XP computer by USB or Firewire.
In my case I used Windows Live OneCare and there you can go to the firewall setings and you sould allow media servers.
Don't FORGET that the 2 computers must be in the same workgroup or domain.
Then you can simpely go to the network connections and the computer should be there. (When it is turned on)
When you can see it just go to control panel -> printers -> New printer
and let him search for it (this could TAKE a wile)
Maybe this allso works with other firewalls but it defenetly doesn't work with the onewho's build in.
If you know a firewall where it works to let me know.

Jonas Thats awsome i have been struggling with this on my home setup i will be giving this a try tonight! If you NEED a free firewall PC Tools has one that works on both Vista and XP. (Freeware)
You might give it a try.
Let me know because I did not try this firewall.
You might also check the protocols of the firewall to see if network detection is allowed.
Let me know if it works with the PC tools firewall. (that would be a much cheaper solution)

Jonas If this was the solution where you were looking for please let me know.
I'm just wondered how much people that actually have this problem.
Oh and if the PC tools firewall works to than I'm really interested.
Please post if it helped you.

Solve : wireless internet connection after re-installing windows?

Answer»

An error message recently appeared on my laptop with one or more unrecoverable problems and i was advised to re-intall windows. However ,since doing so, the laptop cannot find the wireless internet CONNECTION from my main computer, and therefore, I cannot use the internet. I would be very grateful if anybody had any ideas as to how this problem could be resolved. What version of windows are we talking about here?
What is the make make and model of that laptop?
Are you able to search for wireless NETWORKS on it? I.e. is it problem with finding your network or are you not able to search for wireless networks at all?The latop runs on Windows XP Home edition and the laptop itslef is a Dell Inspiron 6000.
The problem is that i cannot find any wireless networks at all and on the 'Network CONNECTIONS' page, the only icon is a 1394 Connection (Net Adapter).Ahh it sounds like you just need to install a driver for your wireless network card. Did your laptop come with a driver CD?What kind of CD would it be? Is it one of the re-installation CD's?Most times you wont need a cd for a wireless networkcard.
Just go to Control panel -> device manager -> look for you network card is there a yellow mark next to it?
If so you can try to right click it and search for driver or you can go to Windows Update.
Click costum. He 'll check for updates.
Go to Hardware, Optional.
There just Download all drivers he finds.
Let us know if it worked.

Jonas
Is a network adapter the same as a network card? If not, i don't seem to have a network card anywhere on the device manager. Also, when i right-click on the network adapter icon and search for drivers, it appears that an installation CD is required. I don't suppose you know what this CD would be? Thanks for your help.
PS. Who is costum?Yes network adaptor is the same as network card. Only network card is never displayed in a device manager it was a mistake of me sorry for that.
And I think I do know witch CD you'll need: The one who says Microsoft Windows XP.
But first I would try to get it online.
That is where Costum will be explained.
Costum isn't a person. Just go to Windows Update.
Then you 'll see that you have a CHOSE between Express and costum.
Click costum. He(The computer) 'll check for updates.
Go to Hardware, Optional.
There just Download all drivers he finds.
Let us know if it worked.

Jonas Jonas ... im afraid he might have a problem useing Windows update to find his network card Drivers .. i belive his lack of drivers might impeed his progress.

Charlie, the CD youll be looking For if its a Dell Laptop Will be MOSTLY Blue , with a white bit at the top and it should say "Drivers and Ultilitys" this is the disk that will have your network Drivers on it.

If you post the Dell Service Number off your your laptop we can use that to look it up on the Dell site and Find you the drivers you will need, then you may download them to a disk and then copy them to your laptop. Thanks for the advice- however, when i run the device update with the CD in, it says that no better hardware mathces could be found than i currently have installed. Do you have any other ideas? thanksYes if you can find the Service Tag off your lap top , and post it here i can find it for you on the dell website , and show you where to download the Drivers.

And is the CD you found the Blue one i spoke off or is it the Windows XP one?the CD i used was the blue Drivers and Utilities one.

Service tag:7VKC22J
thanksYoull find the Driver you need on this Website... there are many network card Drivers listed ... you migt have to try a few before you find the right one, or if you look in device manager under network adaptor somtimes you can see the model off the card listed, or if you still have the invoice for your laptop its should say what card was fitted and it will be easyer to find the right driver in this list

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=7VKC22J&SystemID=INS_PNT_6000&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

EDIT you may also use this software to find out what hard ware your have
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html
Download the program on that site and run it on your Laptop and it will show you all your hard ware model names
Thanks so much for your help -it seems to be fixed and the internet connection is running. You may have guessed but i am actually British- does it matter that the driver i have installed on my laptop is from the American Dell website or would you advise that i download the british one?
Thanks again for your helpNo it doesn't matter for a driver.
I have driver from all over the world and they are all working fine.
Nice to see that we have a new specialist of networking!
Nice job Panfox!
Off course Windows update wasn't working how silly of me!

Solve : USB Networking?

Answer»

First question: is it possible?
Second question: how?

I use two computers at work. One is my internet computer and the other is secured on a closed loop network. Currently, if I need to transfer files from one computer to the other, I use a usb flash DRIVE, which is okay but somewhat cumbersome. I think it would be easier if I could use a usb cable to transfer files to and from each computer. Probably would leave one END plugged in all the time and disconnect the other when I don't need it.
Anyone know if this is possible and how it's done?
well you speak like a lady...it is quite posible, what you have to do is to find a router to connect the connected system to the router and connect a network cable from that router to the usb network card, which you have to purchase and fixed to the usb port of the new system...That usb network cable has two port, one for usb and the other has network port...I think this solve the problem...That's exactly the opposite of what I was ASKING about. I think I know how to network with ETHERNET. After all I am a network administrator for a local government. My question was how to network with usb, not traditional cat5 cables.
I think I've heard of usb networking but not completely sure what it entails. Here you go

Jonas thanks jonas. what'd you use for your search? I tried a couple different things and got few useful results
I'll look at it later, I have a huge project due at the end of the day.
I used Google and TYPED USB networking.

Solve : Advantage Of Dual GIGABIT Lan?

Answer» DEAR Users
What is its advantage I FOUND this by doing a google search with your exact question *
borrowed response *

The average home isn't going to take advantage of the dual gigabit lan with a single COMPUTER and one internet provider. No matter how many paths that you create from one device to another, you'll always be limited to the slowest network connection between the two devices.

One way to be able to appreciate bonding dual gigabit connectors is to have a pair of COMPUTERS with the same network config. This will allow you to copy files between the computers at the maximum speed. However, most people are concerned about downloading content from their internet connection. If you only had a single internet connection, then you're limited to the bandwith by that provider. Furtermore, there's not any ISPs that can match the network speeds of your local lan. So, you'd be limited not only by the speed of your ISP but the ENTIRE network path between you and the site of the data.

Another way you can take advantage of the dual network connections is to obtain the services from two ISPs. Then you could connect the seperate connections to each network port. In this configuration you'd be able to have redundancy in case either ISP goes down. If you use a download manager, like DAP for example then you'd be able to take advantage of the aggregate bandwith of both conntections. These file transfer managers are able to do this by downloading segments of a file through both paths.

This process is analogous to taking a pie, cuting the pie into equal segements and feeding it two people. The file is really downloaded twice, once through each path. As each segment is complete then download manager skips that portion of the file from the other path. This effectively allows you to obtain twice the download speed of the file, since it's retreiving two segments of the same file at one time.

Solve : can't connect to internet after ISP outage?

Answer»

Hi, I really hope you can help me. I have an HP dv2000 laptop (5 months old) with Vista Home Premium. I use a Belkin router connected to my ISPs DSL Gateway modem for wifi at home. It was an easy set up with out any problems UNTIL my ISP experienced an outage for my community yesterday. Since then I haven't been able to get ONLINE. I can connect to my router, which appears to be connected to the modem but the modem isn't giving me internet. I tried plugging in directly to the modem for a LAN connection and still no internet. This has to be an issue with my computer because my roommate isn't having the problem. He has an HP dv5000 and has been getting an wireless internet connection without problems since service resumed. Is it possible that my being online when the outage occurred screwed something up? I'm totally at a loss here. Any help is very much appreciated! Thanks in advance!!!That shouldn't mess up your computer. Have you tried clicking on the CONNECTIONS icon in the bottom left-hand corner of your screen, looking for the available wireless networks, clicking on yours, and following the wizard?yes, I've tried that several TIMES. I've rebooted the computer, the router, the modem. I can only connect locally, when I view the network map I see that I'm connected to the router, which is connected to the modem, but I am not getting internet. I'm not sure if you are familiar with the map I'm talking about, but it SHOWS each each device and then a green line (meaning connected I guess) between them. Between the router and the internet I have a gray line with a red X through it since I'm not getting internet. Again, this is an issue only with my computer, there are others in the house getting internet Any ideas?Yes, try doing this. When you open Internet Explorer and the Webpage Cannot Be Displayed screen comes up, click on "Diagnose Connection Problems".Ok I tried that. It says:

"WINDOWS can not find the host name "ie.redirect.hp.com" using DNS. the doman name server may be down. Windows found a problem that can not be repaired automatically. Contact your isp or network administrator for help or click here for information about things you can try to help resolve the problem. "

I clicked on the "click here" part and the troubleshooting options provided are things I've already tried. This is a real head scratcher for me.

Solve : help with my hub?

Answer»

i was recently faced with a problem that wasn't allowing me to forward ports on my modem. i later found out that my modem is incapable of doing so. in order to get around this i put a hub between my machine and the modem. now the problem is that i have owned the hub for so long that any documents/manuals that i had for it are long gone.

what i need to know is how to forward ports through my hub. i have a 3com home connect 3C19261 hub between my modem (a "motorola SB5120) and computer. can anyone help?Welcome to the forum *

You should be able to get documentation here* good luck

http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/detail.jsp?tab=support&pathtype=support&sku=3C19261Uhh you can't forward ports on a hub, only a router can do that.

But let me explain. There are basically two kinds of modems. The ONE kind got a built in router that allows you to share an internet connection between multiple computers. The other kind just gives you a direct internet connection for one computer.
You only need to forward ports on the kind of modem with built in routers, I wont go in to details of why this is but it is basically because of how routers work. For the other kind you've got a direct connection to the internet and therefore no need to forward ports.

I've checked your modem ONLINE and it is definitely the kind without a router. So you can't and don't need to forward ports.

But if you describe what you're having problems doing I might be able to help you.i have certain sharing programs that say i need to map ports and others saying i need to configure my router settings. basically i just need to map my ports it is saying. but i am using multiple programs that are telling me this. i had already come to the conclusion that my modem is incapable of doing this so i thought that putting my hub between my modem and the machine WOULD allow me to do this.....i guess not.

but there is one program in particular that i do need to map ports for and that is a program i have called "DC++". perhaps you are familiar?
anyways i had configured my router setting for this program weeks ago on a different internet connection else where that was, indeed, using a router. i remember that i need to enable tcp and udp connections. if could figure out how to do this with what i have then perhaps i can get it to work. any ideas? It sounds like a firewall is blocking the ports. What version of windows do you have on the computer? Are you aware of any firewall software installed on the machine?i have created rules for these programs on all of my firewalls. i have xp home, i created a rule on the default firewall that comes with it, and i have created a rule on my norton. It's not a good idea to have two firewalls running. They might be conflicting. So if you have a firewall from Norton you can SAFELY disable the windows firewall.

After you've done that lets try and test if there's an open port.
Open the program that's causing problems.
Go to this page and press the proceed button.
Now fill in the port number the program uses in the text field and press 'Use Specified Custom Port Probe'.
The site will then try and SCAN your port, testing if there's an open connection.
If it fail to find an open port, could you try to disable your firewall and then do a second test.
Remember to enable the firewall after. i disabled my windows firewall for good now, and when i disabled norton firewall the port was still closed.Hmm that's strange...
Try changing the port in the program and see if that makes a difference.

How far apart are the computers?

what os are you running on both machines?

i have OS Xp in Both and i think its 30 miter far both are P3 DeLL as i said before in one side which i have DSL showing it's connected but to anther side it SAYS LAN Unplug
What firewall are both computers using?
Are you sure that you're using a croscable?.
Do you want to share folders or what do you want to do?

Jonas Yes i'm sure that it's CrosCable and firewall is windows default i didn't install any other firewall, i have Two LAN Cards in 1st i insert the Cable of DSL 2nd i insert the cross cable
i want to share files as well as Internet is there anyone to identify my problem ?
if yes please i'm waiting for your repliesIts an odd problem and I can't realy identify your problem but I'll give it a try.
It might be the firewall that is blokking your connection.
Go to control panel (make sure your in category view) -> security settings -> windows firewall ->

Do this on all the computers of your network and make sure they are in the same workgroup.
Let me know if this works.

Jonas Thank you Jonas for Reply and it didn't work at all i've already done all these firewall settings
now i bought a Switch BayLan 8 ports now both computers are connected to switch
i can use internet but i can't access the other computer in my workgroup actually it is not appearing only i can see my own computer that is all every computer shows its own name in workgourp i've changed the cable connecters too still didn't work so what do you say now

thank you in adv.... waiting for your replyYES JONAs you're right google HELPED me 101% and i've SOLVED my problem Via google i love google

Thank you Jonas for your help too Good to see that it worked out.
Let me guess you had to enable network detection wright?

Jonas NO i didnt Enable anything i only Disable firewall protection from all workstations then it starts to share everything

Thanks JONAsYou disabled your firewall?!
That's very unsafe!
Now everyone who know your IP can enter your computer!!!
Make share you enable network detection or network share that depends on how they explain it in your firewall.
But you need to have a firewall you really do.

Jonas
Ok Jonas then tell me what to do now ? do i have to turn them on back ?
if i turn my firewall on back then i can't share any file only i can use internet that is all
i want to share files too now tell me if you got my problem what to do ?
Dload and install http://www.pctools.com/firewall/
Go to advanced rules go to trusted zones and allow printer and file sharing.
If it doesn't work you can allow printer and file sharing in the Internet zones but normally that won't be necessary.
hope this works.
Let me know.

Solve : I want to create a hotspot from a standard computer and it's WIFI adapter.?

Answer»

I want to create a hotspot from a standard computer and it's WIFI adapter. I only get INTERNET access through dial-up, so I want the computer with dial-up to create a hotspot through its WIFI adapter, so I can use the dial-up in other rooms. I don't need the computers to all be officially networked; maybe just one program could ACCEPT requests from the WIFI, and fetch data through the dial-up. How can I do this? Thanks. So you want to create a wireless network?
I hope you want to protect it.
Can you give us the make and model of your router?
And the OS of the computer who will install the router.

Jonas I have Win XP. The WIFI is just a standard USB WIFI adapter, so I want a solution that works with any WIFI adapter, but it is the Dell 1450 (USB, not internal). To all of the other computers that use this network, I want the network to appear a s a standard Internet hotspot, so I don't want a standard network. You can't do that with an adaptor.
An adaptor is something that receives Internet from a router it can't broadcast Internet.
In order to do that you'll need a router or an accesspoint.
Then the router will broadcast the Internet.

Jonas
Actually you can do it with some adapters but they need to support being used as an access point.
This one does for EXAMPLE:
Zyxel G-220
KristopherWindsor your adapter doesn't appear to support being used as an AP. So there is no way of doing what you want without either getting an adapter that can or a router like Jonas suggested.

But the good news is that you probably don't need any special software to share your internet connection. Many versions of Windows support internet connection sharing, so if or when you get the proper equipment we can GUIDE you through the setup.-> They need to support being used as an access point.

Isn't that more of a software problem? If the WIFI adapter can send and receive signals, why can't it work as an access point? It's actually more of a driver problem. Windows doesn't control a wireless adapter directly, the driver does that. So if the driver doesn't support this feature no amount of software can change that.

Solve : More and more internet site are unable to reach.?

Answer»

After much reading I found out:
That Telenet is using a MAC filter.
Because of our budget we can only use 2 mac addr.
One of the ROUTER and one of the accespoint.
We would have to call to Telenet to change that and after testing I would have to call back to REARRANGE it.
So I can't try it but if it would be the router than the accespoint should work, no?

Jonas
Okay, well then I can't really think of much else to try besides all the basic stuff I probably should have started with, but assumed you've already tried. Like powering off the modem, switch, router and so on and then power them back up. You could also try to reset your router.

Else I'm all out of ideas. Ok thanks Deerpark for helping me out!!
I learned allot like the DNS bypass and the tracert command!
As there was no other solution I reseted the whole thing!
Now the problem is solved after hours of testing and making the router work! (It was only my second time so...)
Thanks for taking the time to helpe me!
I'd liked it if I could solve it without having to rest but hé it works so.

Thanks for everyone who helped me!!
Jonas SOMETIMES a router reset is simply unavoidable. But if your router supports saving its settings to a file this can make your LIFE a lot easier. Then you can just restore the settings file after the reset.

But it's GOOD to hear everything is working again and that I could teach you a little.

well after 1 and half hours I managed to get the file on a cd and onto my pc. I ran the file and it did nothing. I already had the updated drivers.

So that didn't work.

So I then went into my BIOS and checked the settings.

Onboard 1394 - [Enabled]
Onboard LAN - [Enabled]
Onboard LAN Boot ROM [Disabled]

I changed to last one to enabled, rebooted the computer, but it still doesn't work. Are you sure that it isn't the cable??

In Network Connections do you still only have a connection called 1394? How about device manager, does the network card show up there?

Nope, In network connections and device manager it's only the 1394 thing showing up.

And as I said way back in the first post, I took my network card and threw it away a while ago, which is why I was about to buy a new one from ebay until you guys said that if I have my ethernet cable plugged into my pc, I shouldn't need a new network card.

So what If I was just to buy a wireless usb thing like this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WIFI-USB-WIRELESS-LAN-802-11G-11B-54MBPS-DONGLE-ADAPTER_W0QQitemZ120145030200QQihZ002QQcategoryZ45002QQcmdZViewItem

(my router is wireless)Should work.
But I can say the same thing about your network card.

Jonas In device manager do you see something called 'other devices' with a yellow question mark beside it? And is one of these devices called 'Ethernet Controller'?
If you do, you need to install the driver for this device like described on the HP page.

Solve : Networking Help?

Answer»

Dear Users
For Example : I have a 10 PC NETWORKING system for example if i have a 128Kps connection then these bytes will be equally distributed LIKE 128Kps/10Pc's or else That depends of the DEAL that the ISP has given you.
When you have a deal of 1 computer and you connect a router who DIVIDES the Internet then the 128Kbps will be divided in 10 but ONLY when they are all on the Internet.
When there are 3 of the 10 computers using Internet the it will only be divided by 3.
Hope this clears up things.

Solve : How to set up my wired router??

Answer»

Only USB routers might NEED drivers and the 604 isn't an USB router. Not all routers come with setup programs either.
Since you've bought it used, it might be a GOOD IDEA to RESET it, to clear any settings from the previous owner. You should be able to download a manual for it from D-Links site and find instructions on how to reset it.There is a TINY pinhole labeled "reset" on the back, should I just go for it and push it? LOL Sweet sassy molassey! I figured it out! First I tried resetting which didn't help, and then I finally figured out how to upgrade the firmware through the Dlink wizard and that did the trick. Thanks for everyone who offered suggestions!

Solve : password for neighboor pc?

Answer»

hello
i have a home network with 2 PC and a switch hub.
these PC's use same OS(win xp sp2), they can ping together both.i can see other PC in "my network places"
but when i want to log in that PC, a little WINDOW appear that want username and PASSWORD for logging, and i can not change username but i must type password for accessing, but i do not set any kind password for both systems and both PC's do not have any password for any user even ADMINISTRATOR user.
why that window appear and how i can remove or skip that window for logging.
What are you saying?
That you want to hack the neighbor PC?
First: we may not help you with that.
and second you can't do much with the PC that way. you can only access files and copy files.(If the protection is set to full control than you can paste files.)

Jonas i think he means neighbour as in ''the other computer'' in his network, Jonas.TRY just hitting Enter when prompted for a password.hi , i am not hacker
i must tell that both PC's are mine
my mean from neighboor is that other PC in "my network places"
when i want see other PC folder sharing i must go to that Pc in my network places
when i click on it ,it ask me username and password .
but idont set any password for both PCs .
i have this problem for both PCs
that mean: when i am front PC 1, i go to my network places and click on PC 2 i must type password
that problem is for i sit front PC 2.
i tried press "enter" without password but it does not work.
help me please
Both PC's need to be in the same workgroup for you to do this...
Have you enabled FILE and print sharing ? ?
Did this ever work or are you just setting it up now ? ?Sorry patio to correct you but if the computers aren't in the same workgroup they don't show up in network places.
So they are in the same workgroup.
To enable printer and file sharing we need to know: what firewall are you using?
did you try creating a new full control account with a password.
Then fill in that account and password.
It isn't a great solution but it is the only thing I can think of.

Jonas
thank you for helping
So it worked??

Solve : Wireless Set Up - Last Try!?

Answer»
I am trying to set up my wireless router in my new apartment. I have Windows XP, and am using Comcast DSL. I have previously been able to use my router and COMPUTERS with RCN internet in my last place.

When I first tried to set up the router, I could use the internet (wired) through the router on my desktop. However, the wireless was not working. So I CALLED the tech support (its a Buffalo Air System Turbo G router). They had me change some things on buffalo's install page (the address that is all numbers) INCLUDING a MAC address? and how it detected settings (to automatically detect). I also was told to reset the router, unplug both the router and the modem, and do this several times in several different ways (I had to CALL twice, since my problem was not solved).

After the first call, I had a connection to the network on my desktop, but it was only sending, not receiving packets, and I was unable to connect to the internet. I didn't even try the laptop. So I called again, and did the same things again (listed above). I was told to just try unplugging both again for a half hour and setting it up again.

This obviously did not WORK. So my current thinking is:

1. The internet is working - My desktop is connected directly to the modem.
2. The wireless card in my desktop is working - because I can connect to other people's networks
3. I don't know if the laptop is working, it's old, so is not running xp, but the internet signal shown is in the excellent (100% range), but it won't connect.
4. I can't tell if the router is working. It was before, at least to connect my wired desktop to the internet.

I would really appreciate any suggestions before I go out and buy another router which may or may not even work.

Thank you!

Solve : how to join to a lan with a phone line?

Answer»

hello
i have a lan in my OFFICE ,all PCs in this NETWORK use same OS(xp sp2),i have a PC in home with same OS too.
i want that my PC in home join with my lan in office by using phone line.
how i can do it
please guide me.
So you want to create a VPN or a domain?
If it is a normal workgroup then all the settings will have to change but I guess it is a domain witch can use VPN connection.
You can simply go to start -> CONNECT to -> show all network connections -> file -> new connection -> next -> set up connection manually-> fill EVERYTHING in.

For a normal company LAN (Local Area Network) this will work but it could be that the company network doesn't support VPN. When the company doesn't use a domain.
Try this and let us know.

Jonas hi
i dont use any domain in my LAN and i dont want create a domain. it is a normal LAN with a normal workstation and it dont use internet .this LAN is in my office,in this workgroup ,i have 2 PCs.
and i have a third PC in my home.i want to connect PC(home) to LAN by phone line that this PC will become a member of this LAN like others 2 PCs.
thank you

I am SORRY to say that this is not how networking works.

Your home computer would need a way to authenticate to the work LAN. This is normally done with a domain controller which means you have to setup a domain at work.

Solve : XP DNS Cache not working as I thought it should;curiosity question?

Answer»

(Previously posted in Windows forum but now removed after no responses.)

I'm running Windows XP on a Dell Precision 390 and have a local cable TV company (RCN) as my ISP via cable modem.

I was exploring the Windows ipconfig /displaydns command and I noticed that my cache only had TWO "host" entries in it: one for "localhost" and another for "#.#.#.###.in-addr.arpa". None of my recent internet site visits were in there. I expected this cache to be filled with lots of urls so I followed up. Based on what I found I thought the "time to kill" setting might be set to zero or something like that.

I checked the registry and there was not a MaxCacheTtl item in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DNSCache\Parameters. Thinking that if I added this entry I would start seeing more items in the DNS cache, I added a MaxCacheTtl entry and set the length to one day (in seconds). I followed the instructions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318803.

But the registry change won't take, or some other setting is overriding it. I expect to see the urls of all the internet sites I'm visiting in the dns cache, but I STILL only get the host entries described above.

This isn't really a problem. It's a curiosity question. Why won't the registry change take? Is there some other MS control setting that overrides it? Is it something my ISP is doing?

Here's one clue, I'd like to follow up on. The MS link above says

The TTL for positive responses is the lesser of the following values:
• The number of seconds specified in the query response the resolver received
• The value of the MaxCacheTtl registry setting.

How can I check "the number of seconds specified in the query response" to see if this is set to 0 or 1 second.

Thanks for any help you can GIVE me to learn about this stuff.
Well I'd like to help you out but my XP doesn't appear to be caching DNS lookups either and the only info I'm able to find via SEARCH engines is on how to disable the cache. It's very puzzling...If you would like some reading on this check out these web sites....

http://www.techiwarehouse.com/cms/engine.php?page_id=163e0b14

http://www.updatexp.com/dns-windows-xp.html

Thank you Spoiler. I'd seen the article by Vic Laurie; the other is new. They're helpful in general but don't explain why the DNS cache is behaving as advertised. Based on the second article I'm pretty sure I have the TTL setting in the registry correctly set. Oh, well.

Solve : How Do I Open My Router's Ports?

Answer»

I have a normal NETGEAR router, and all I have on the PC's desktop is something called NETGEARw111.v2 or something, and I open it, but nothing happens.

But anyway, I want to open up port numbers to allow me to play a particular game online with my friends, called Age of Empires 2 : Age Of Kings.

I just worked out my router's IP, so now for the port numbers, any help?Age of Empires 2 uses port number 23978.

I'm not sure on how to forward the port with netgear, but I'm sure someone else on here will have a better idea for that than me.Quote from: unclerayray on September 05, 2007, 09:48:33 AM

Check out:
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm

Scroll down, looking for Netgear .
Looks like you will need the exact model number of your router.

I hope that helps.
Let us know.

Got It, Draytek Vigor 2800. But the way I connect to it is using a little plastic memory stick looking thing, with Netgear on it, otherwise I can't connect to it. Dunno why, but that's it, Draytek Vigor 2800If I can't open the ports, is there anyway I can at least check if they're open, somehow easier? Like from cmd, /status port 23978 or whatever you write in.

http://www.canyouseeme.org/ - to see if the ports are open on your router. Though may I sugest you to open the web configuring console to see if there are open ports? If you know the router's IP (LOCAL IP, what IP does it has on your lan and not that sent by your ISP), administrator username and password you should be able to log on router as administrator and make any changes are necessary.

Your router's lan IP: on any COMPUTER that is connected to your lan (to your router), open a command prompt and type:

ipconfig /all

(I suppose you have windows xp on that computer. If you have another operating system the command resembles this BUT it is different).
See in the results the line with "Default gateway", where you will find your router's lan IP. Important note: you have a single router on your home network and that is the draytek, RIGHT?

http://www.draytek.co.uk/support/router_faq.html - Draytek frequently asqued questionsok thanks, so I've found out that port 23978 is closed. Thanks viking.

Port 23978 is definately Age of Empires II: Age of Kings to play multiplayer, right?

I'll try and see if I can get this port open then, thanks.Seems a bit long too regarding I've seen only up to port number 500.You posted after modified my reply, PLEASE check again my previous post.

You can try:

or google Shields Up to find the same pages.
Last time I used it, there were many options there. You can scan all or a specified port.

yeah Viking, I will get my dad to go on that http://192.168 site place, I think he does all the router stuff from there, and tell him to open ports.

Discussing it with your father is a good idea.

I'm curious though - you did find this page when you went to the site I mentioned above, right?
Vigor-2800G Age_of_Empires_II page

Where it says:
"The Vigor-2800G will not allow you to forward enough ports, to run Age of Empires II. You should try using the DMZ portion of this router if it is available. Alternatively you can try switching the router to bridged mode. You will need to contact your ISP to switch to bridged mode, so they can make the required changed on their end."

I believe bridged mode means wide open, and that is not a good idea.
Before you do something like that, I suggest you ask others here for their opinion of it.

Solve : Want to use current pc internet with my laptop?

Answer»

I'm sure this has been answered before but I couldn't find anything.

I just bought a used laptop off ebay. It came with a lan PC card and a 56k modem pc card so I assume it has no internal modem?? I had never even heard of pc cards till I got this. Anyway, I have dsl on my home pc, with a 2wire portal. I want to be able to get on the internet with my laptop using my home connection. How do I go about doing that?Do you know the model of the laptop? Is there a plug on the laptop like the one where the modem plugs into your DESKTOP?The laptop is a Gateway 2550. It does have all the USB, and phone jacks. But I need to go WIRELESS, my pc is upstairs and need to use the laptop downstairs. You'll need a wireless lan card 1st to connect. Then you'll you need to check and see if the wireless option has been turned on within the 2Wire router/modem.

Alan <>< Does your 2Wire modem even have wireless? If not, you will need to get a wireless router.

Solve : NIC or Not??

Answer»

I'm trying to get the most out of my laptop for online gaming. I've read that having a stand alone card as opposed to an onboard makes a big difference.

Toshiba Satelite m55 s3262 psm50u-02q01k
1.86ghz
80gb
marvell yukon 88e8036 fast ethernet controller

My internet's from a 100mbs SATELLITE lan w/24 port switch

First, will buying the add-on card have any effect at all?

I've found a 32bit type 2 card that's compatable at sparepartswarehouse. Does this mean that any 32bit type 2 card will do?

If a card will make a difference, what do I LOOK for when shopping as far as what will produce the best performance? Brand, cost? Factory direct?

ThanksNope.
Not unless you get a NIC specifically designed for offloading all networking tasks from the CPU like this. But their products wont fit in a laptop.
Besides from the reviews I've seen, the performance increase with those NICs isn't major. Is there anything that you would recommend that would cause a significant change? Laptop wise or satellite lan wise?

Well I've heard that satellite connections can equal higher latency. So if that is the problem the best solution would be to get a dsl or cable connection instead... but of course that isn't always possible. How much RAM do you have installed in it?Yeah, satellite's my only option. I'm sort of in the desert.

512...I actually have a pretty decent laptop on the way, but it's taking longer than expected. I'm sure it will run better, but I'm looking into everything I can.

By the way, THANKS for the responses.Upgrading to 1 GB ram or more should help performance... but if you've got a better laptop on the way I wouldn't spend money on a ram upgrade for the old one.A network card rated at 10 Mbps is more than your internet network connection transfer rate. Although you may have a better transfer rate, a greater bandwidth. But, if we are talking about network cards rated at 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps (1 Gbps) than it is far too much for an internet network connection, your bandwidth assured by your ISP is surely lower thant 100 Mbps.

Your network card does not affect your internet transfer rate unless it's broken. Do you have a guaranteed transfer rate of 44 Mbps? Guaranteed by your ISP that means.

Do you want a better "network gaming machine"? Than, options are simple (and unfortunately a laptop is not easy or cheap to be upgraded): RAM, videocard, processor, motherboard. The discussion could be expanded, but you did not ask for those "outsights". I hope I helped you with the COMPARISON between wan transfer rates and lan transfer rates (wan = internet, lan = a local area network, "hidden" by a router). From my point of view, the network card does not make a difference. Unless it's broken.Ok, thanks for the answers. Just didn't want to waste money on something that wouldn't help out. This can be closed.

Thank you

thxNo, you can not use dual gigabit ethernet as a hub. You can use 2 network cards in a computer and make from that computer a router, but you can't make it a hub/switch - computer network cards need IP's in order to function (to fulfill their goal). Network cards are not repeaters (or at LEAST I didn't heard of - we are talking about ethernet and not Token Ring or another technology).
What MODELS are your routers? Are they "home routers" (1 wan port, 4 or more lan ports)?
If I am confused? By your stile, not by your demands I have 2 linksys home routers 1 is a rtp300 router with phone ports, and the other is a linksys wireless/wired home router no sure of the # off hand but it is just a 4 port router. how complecated is it going to be to run a network going thru 2 routers?QUOTE from: oldskool on September 04, 2007, 06:04:10 PM

Your last post sais everything. What do you want to do with your network? Do you need 2 routers? What data do you want/need to transfer between computers connected to separate routers? HOW do you want to transfer data? Do you know to set-up a network comprising a few routers or do you want to learn? It is not difficult, but I won't explain it here, please take a book.
Sorry, but you are asking a tutorial and not an advice.
My advice? If you have so many computers at home, why don't you use a switch? But you know better, this is my far-away opinion, not based on real facts but on assumptions.

Solve : Work Connection Problem?

Answer»

Ok, my mom is attempting to connect to the internet at her work, she has a laptop and it picks up the signal, but it won't let her connect to the internet. I have tried turning off both firewalls, but it still doesn't let her connect. She is running on Vista x32 bit HOME Premium.

Thanks again.Well, a little more information would help

It SOUNDS like she's wireless, right? She'll pick up a signal but won't connect most likely because the IT people have secured the network. You can pick up a signal from any wireless network but that does't mean you can use it.

Has she contacted them for help? That's the first place to start.

Alan <>< Well, the network is not secure from what she has told me, but she has not contacted them, it is pretty hard to get a hold of one, so I was trying to help. Um, I don't know what info you also needed? Comp specs are useless, and I directions there are kind of useless. She needs to contact them REGARDLESS of how hard it is. Otherwise this conversation is going to be a very llllloooooonnnnngggg one

Alan <>< Well, I understand that, but I was looking for suggestions relating to my problem that I have not already listed. So, maybe you can throw some suggestions out there.Nobody has got anything?Well honestly the first thing to do is to contact the IT department as ale52 suggested. It MIGHT be problem with the access point or maybe she needs to be authenticated with the AP before she cant get access. There really isn't much of a point in troubleshooting the laptop before any outside factors are ruled out.

If it is only a small amount then counting the number of computers using Office would be more reliable and then count your discs to see if you have the correct number. note: i use nero application on both PCs.ok, so you already have a workgroup?
Then just right click it (properties-> sharing and security) and check share.
Then open windows explorer -> click TOOLS -> map network drive -> browse and look for it.
I suggest you give it a letter at the end of the alphabet cause if you connect and external drive it is going to CALL it D(if you only have a C drive) and if there is a network map that is already called that way you will have troubles.

Solve : ICS Option?

Answer»

ok this is weird.. first of all, a while BACK I was trying to figure out how to share my internet connection using bluetooth, but the internet connection sharing option was not there when i right-clicked on my internet and went to properties and then to advanced. Well last night I was working with it again, and the ICS option was there, were I could ENABLE it or whatever I wanted to do. So I was thrilled and once again began to try to share internet with my laptop using bluetooth. Well i never could get it so i gave up. Ok well just now I was gonna try again, and the ICS option in the Advanced tab is once again gone, vanished. Quesion: How in the world is this happening, it being there then going away again, and how can I get it back? And then if you can help me get that fixed, i'd really like some help on ICS with my laptop and this computer. Thanks

is der any who can suggest how to know my net features... my dad is sayin net speed is 256kbps but wen i applied speedometer its showin 100kbps...my modem internet LED always fluctuate........i hav many doubts about USAGE of net...any one can suggest my queries THRU voice base chat.....am workin on this issue since two days.......HELP meYou want to know your connection speed?
Try here. Note though that these speed tests aren't always accurate.

You say the "internet LED" on your modem is fluctuating? Are you sure it isn't an activity LED that shows when the modem is sending or receiving data and therefore is supposed to blink.

I'm sorry but I just can't understand what you're trying to say here.

Is that 256 kbps guaranteed or a maximum with no guarantee?
To take as good results from "speedometers" you have to check more sites with that function, and find the "middle" answer, after you leave outside the calculations the numbers that are too much low or HIGH. The "speedometer" tells you what it is the speed between you and speedometer's server, it doesn't tell you your network speed.

Solve : Windows 2003 SBS question about DNS?

Answer»

Hello,

I am looking for a verification on a HUNCH...

I have 2 buildings that share an internet CONNECTION.

Internet > firewall > switches > servers

Each building has it's own SWITCH and NT4 server and each are running DNS locally (as far as I can tell). When I boot the new Win SBS 2k3 server, I cannot run DNS on it because it senses the service running on the network already. CURRENT plans are to retire one NT4 server in a building and install the SBS server. So my hunch is that if I retire one NT4 server and replace it with SBS, it will not be able to run DNS on the SBS because it can still see it running on the other NT4 server over the network. Also, if I have two SBS SEVERS that share a firewall to the internet will they be able to run their own DNS services or will one have to serve the entire network?

Any input would be helpful... Thanks!!

Solve : -->1 modem, 2 noteboks, internet impossibility? leave a yes or a no

Answer»

background-i have two media center xp laptops. i have an external modem with a DSL connection. i have one laptop PLUG to the modem using the usb cord (INTERNET works) while the other USES the ethernet cable. I want the net to work on both of them but can't figure it out. a while back i POSTED somthing about setting a network so i could do this but the internet started to work on both although i couldn't figure out how. now i am trying this again but, following the steps you all give to me, so i know how to do this in the future. both laptops have a wireless thing on them also not sure how to use it in this situation cause trying to set a wireless network failed.

problem-trying to figure out how to surf the net on two laptops using one modem and the etherner port and usb portMy understanding of what your trying to do is to use 1 modem and use both the USB and the Ethernet CONNECTIONS on it. This will not work. The modem uses the USB or the Ethernet connection...not both at the same time.

They way to get this to work is to buy a router and connect it to your modem and than connect your laptops to the router.

Solve : Probability and Networking?

Answer»

I've been pondering how probability is related to computer networking recently. I know some understanding of probabiliy and statistics are required to understand graph theory. And graph theory knowledge is used in routing info on a network. I'm not very familiar in this area yet. I know enough to get by for my own use, but that's about it. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? You really are something.
Some algorithms used in routing protocols are based on probability and statistics theory and study. Now it seems very "simple" to understand the "basic principle" behind such a routing algorithm, but initially was a decision based on the probabilistic study of the given problem - in our case, creation of a network map, considering a network that provides network REDUNDANCY - multiple reliable or unreliable WAYS to a certain destination. As an example, you may find more if you will want to search a little more about Spanning Tree Protocol (used in switches) - it is not used for "routing" (I mean it is not used by equipments called "routers" but by equipments called "switches"). But you also could try to search informations REGARDING "pure" routing algorithms, such as Border Gateway Protocol (bgp) and others.

I know only some very-very THIN info on the subject, as for me is completely theoretical and not practical at all, I don't design network routing protocols. And I am not sure I understand corectly your demand... You lost me when you said "I'm not familiar with this area yet. I know enough to get by for my own use [...].". You want to discuss MATHEMATICS (advanced mathematics) and how are they applied in computer programs? (algorithms?)

I would give you a name, a great person that launched and studied a great number of computer theory, but unfortunately I have a lapsus now... And it sits on my tongue... He is so well known, has many books regarding computer theory and mathematics applications on computer theory.

Solve : User name/password invalid?

Answer»

A friend has just bought a NEW laptop and asked me to help set up her internet connection. She had noted User Name, Password and ISP phone no. from her EXISTING account with Onetel and I used these for her new machine.

We get an error 691 saying User name/or Password is invalid.

Am I missing something ?

TOMORROW I shall try another PROVIDER with a connection CD, but she would like to keep her PRESENT account. Her old (dinosoar) machine is alongside and working - just!

Les
Call her ISP and confirm that the usr/pwd are correct.
